Spain’s new political map raises questions about future of bullfighting Leftist governments across the country withdraw public subsidies and plan referendums Spain’s new political map is raising
questions about the future of public events involving los toros – anything from bullfights to the custom of chasing the animals down the street (or being chased by them) during local fiestas. The municipal and regional elections of May 24 triggered a shift to the political left, and many of the new groups in power do not look favorably upon these forms of entertainment, or upon the fact that many of them are subsidized with
expense it entails. Another Valencian town, Alzira, will no longer hold bous al carrer (running of the bulls), a popular tradition in many Catalan and Valencian villages. In Denia, another seaside town, the city is considering a referendum on its bous a la mar, in which the bull ends up being pushed into the sea. Aragón. Zaragoza officials met with neighborhood associations in the city and in rural areas to inform them that there will be no more public subsidies for fiestas involving toros embolados (bulls with firecrackers attached to their horns) or toros ensogados (bulls with long ropes tied to their nape). Huesca may also hold a referendum on whether to ban bullfights altogether.
Catalonia, five years without bullfights Maiol Roger Five years ago, the Catalan assembly approved a regional ban on bullfighting with 68 votes in favor, 55 against and nine abstentions. Since then, supporters of the fiesta have been seeking ways of bringing it back, but so far to no avail. La Monumental, the only ring that was still operational at the time, is now the subject of political discussion as lawmakers seek a new use for it. Meanwhile, tourists seeking Spanish folklore can now watch corridas in which the animal does not die, held at cattle ranches near the Ebro river. Meanwhile, the future of the correbous (running of the bulls) is ensured through regional legislation that protects them in 30 municipalities where they are considered a local tradition. public money. A dozen municipalities, including major cities such as Alicante, are now planning to hold referendums on whether these events should be banned altogether. Other cities and regions are also mulling ways of phasing them out, even as the number of bull-centered festivities grew last year, according to statistics released in May by the Education, Culture and Sports Ministry. Madrid. The new city government, led by Mayor Manuela Carmena of the leftist bloc Ahora Madrid, has given up its box at Las Ventas bullring. Carmena has announced that she intends to turn the Spanish capital into “an animal-friendly city” and supports eliminating all subsidies to bullfighter training schools and bullfights. Valencia. The Valencian regional government said it will stop subsidizing bullfights, and in the city of Valencia, the new leftist mayor, Joan Ribó of Compromís, said he will not encourage bullfights or subsidize anything that involves animal cruelty. Alicante will stop subsidizing bullfights, and the new local government also wants to hold a referendum to see whether the city should be declared completely free of bullfights. The popular resort of Gandia has already banned fights because it is “animal abuse” and because of the public
Galicia. The mayor of A Coruña, Xulio Ferreiro of the bloc Marea Atlántica, has terminated the contract with the company that organizes bullfights in the city. Ferreiro argued that the city will save itself €50,000. Balearic Islands. The leftist coalition that controls Palma de Mallorca plans to declare the city “free of animal abuse.” But the move will only be symbolic when it comes to bullfights, as the local ring is privately owned and holds a regional operating license. The city will ask the regional assembly to change its 1992 animal protection law in order to ban all forms of bull-related fiestas across the islands. Activists have already collected around 130,000 signatures asking for this ban. San Sebastián. The Basque seaside town is the exception to the rule, as bullfighting is back this summer. The Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) recovered control of city hall in May after a four-year stint under the radical leftists of Bildu, who had banned it (even though in the nearby municipality of Azpeitia, also under Bildu control, the fights were allowed to remain because of a strong fan base). Flights from Spain getting cheaper
According to a study carried out by global search engine Skyscanner, the cost of flights departing from mainland Spain has fallen an average of 7% over the past year, and an average of 13% since 2013. Over the past year, the price of internal flights has fallen 1% on average and the price of flights from Spain to elsewhere in Europe has fallen by a average of 10%. Some of the most popular European destinations have benefitted from these reductions in price, with flights to Rome falling by 14% and those to Paris by 11%. The only European flights that have
increased slightly in price over the past two years are those to London and Amsterdam, with a 1% and 7% rise respectively. Internal flights have also seen beneficial price changes for customers with some of the most popular destinations showing marked reductions: flying to Palma de Mallorca is now 13% cheaper than it was a year ago, the cost of flying to Madrid has dropped by 10% and prices of flights to Ibiza have also fallen 6% over the past two years. thinkspain
The average salary in Spain falls 0.2% in 2014, to €22,606
The average Spanish salary fell slightly in 2014, continuing a downward trend that began in 2012, when the government introduced sweeping labor reforms. Spanish workers made a gross annual salary of €22,605 on average, representing a 0.2 percent contraction from 2013, according to figures released this week by the National Statistics Institute (INE). Wages accounted for 73.75% of the total cost per worker, which was gross €30,653 in 2014, or 0.6% less than the previous year, the 2014 Annual Labor Cost Survey finds. This salary setback is somewhat offset by weaker prices, caused by falling oil
prices.
Broken down by activities, employees in the energy industry once again enjoyed the highest salaries. This supremacy of the energy sector is routinely confirmed by all labor surveys conducted in Spain. The average salary in the energy sector was around €58,000, more than twice the national average. Next in the topearning chart are workers from the banking, finance and insurance sectors, who take home an average €43,575. Most of the non-wage labor costs were taken up by Social Security contributions (€7,005 per worker), followed by corporate benefits, work expenses, severance pay and training. elpais

Tourist lies on speeding car in latest stupid stunt
Footage showing a half-naked tourist spread-eagled across the back of a car speeding along a busy motorway outside Marbella is being investigated by police. The incredibly dangerous stunt was caught on camera by a Spanish driver who remarked: “This is what guiris do. 100kms and look how he is travelling.” Guiris is the slang word often used in Spain to describe northern European tourists. “What madness,” he adds. It is not easy to make out the figures in the grainy footage until the convertible car enters a tunnel when streetlights reveal what looks like a man in his shorts sprawled on his back across the rear of the car. with the pranksters – and records 99km per hour (61mph) The footage uploaded onto Youtube by the user karrasko82 in the early hours of Friday morning is being investigated by Malaga’s Civil Guard traffic unit, according to a report in Malaga newspaper Diario Sur. The stretch of road where the footage was filmed appears to be the newly-built tunnel between Marbella and Puerto Banús. Tourism chiefs have warned against dangerous crazes such as balconing, a craze where tourists, usually under the influence of alcohol, attempt to jump from balconies to the swimming pool below. In recent years dozens of holidaymakers have been involved in ‘balconing’ incidents resulting in serious injuries and sometimes deaths. Magaluf on the Balearic island of Majorca has introduced bylaws that will impose fines on anyone caught attempting to climb out of balconies.

Calais Crisis: Hundreds Storm Channel Tunnel
The Home Secretary calls for EU assistance to ease the Calais migrant crisis as further security measures are announced. Hundreds of migrants stormed the Channel Tunnel overnight, pulling down fences before being halted from crossing to Britain by riot police. Around 200 migrants broke through several layers of security before approaching the tunnel entrance. As the migrants scrambled down to the final fence line, dozens of police arrived to back up the military. The migrants and security forces faced off for close to an hour, with the migrants shouting slogans including: “Open the border” and “We are not animals”. It comes as Home Secretary Theresa May and France’s Interior Minister said the EU should step in to help Britain and France find long-term solutions to the “global migration crisis”. Ms May and Bernard Cazeneuve said the chaos in Calais is not only a problem for the UK and France. In an article for The Sunday Telegraph, they said: “We are both clear: tackling this situation is the top priority for the UK and French governments. “We are committed and determined to solve this, and to solve it together. What we are currently facing is a global migration crisis. “This situation cannot be seen as an issue just for our two countries. It is a priority at both a European and international level. “Many of those in Calais and attempting to cross the Channel have
made their way there through Italy, Greece or other countries. “That is why we are pushing other member states, and the whole of the EU, to address this problem at root.” A new package of measures has been agreed which will see security ramped up at the Channel Tunnel. The steps include 200 extra private security guards funded by the UK, French police reinforcements, additional fences provided by Britain and more CCTV. Downing Street admitted the UK would fund “most if not all” of the new security measures in Calais. It comes after David Cameron called French President Francois Hollande to discuss the migrant crisis. The Prime Minister has warned the crisis, which has seen some 5,000 desperate migrants lay siege to the tunnel in the hope of reaching Britain, could last all summer. Harriet Harman has written to Mr Cameron demanding he ask the French to compensate Britons affected by the chaos in Calais. Labour’s interim leader says the Prime Minister should be doing more to recoup the cost of the crisis to haulage companies, who have seen their vehicles stacked on the M20 in Kent due to disruption to ferry and Channel Tunnel services. They are estimated to be losing £700,000 a day as a result of the delays. skynews

Spain bungee jump death: Two charged with manslaughter of Kleyo De Abreu
Two people have been charged with manslaughter after a woman died while bungee jumping in Spain.
It said the monitor’s role was to secure the ropes and harness before authorising the person to jump. But after attaching the harness to Ms De Abreu and moving away to tighten the ropes, there was believed to have been a “lack of communication or understanding” and Ms De Abreu jumped before being told to do so.
Recovering Spanish banks see profits rise
Major Spanish banks reported a surge in quarterly net profits on Friday as earnings soared in a sector that just three years ago had to be bailed out.
Kleyo De Abreu, 23, from London, was killed on 21 July in Lanjaron, Granada, while jumping from the Tablate Bridge. The Guardia Civil has charged the owner of an adventure company and a bungee jump supervisor with her death. Its investigation found there was miscommunication between the supervisor and Miss De Abreu, who jumped before the equipment had been made safe. One supervisor had been left to monitor 14 people taking part in the bungee jump, which was “not enough” to guarantee customer safety, police found.
August 2015
BBVA, Spain’s second-biggest bank by market capitalization, said net profits rose 73 percent to €1.2 billion ($1.3 billion) in the second quarter. The police report stated: “This jump, performed before the ropes were properly tensioned...could be the cause of the accident”. Investigators believed the monitor “did not execute their function with due care and precautions”, the report said. There are two bridges at the site - a modern bridge from which bungee jumps are launched, with an ancient Roman bridge underneath. It is believed Ms De Abreu hit the lower bridge, causing fatal injuries, when she jumped from above. Her father Bernard Atwell described his daughter as “sweet, caring, bubbly and focused”. Ms De Abreu, an aspiring fashion student from Brixton, had been visiting her aunt in Spain, who was watching when she fell. BBC news

The third-biggest, CaixaBank, said its net earnings doubled to €333 million. In the case of BBVA, “robust activity and an excellent margin performance confirm the profit growth cycle continue s,” said the bank’s president, Carlos Torres, in a statement. The Bilbaobased lender generated gains of €144 million in the quarter from exceptional events including the sale of a stake in Chinese bank CNCB. It echoed other Spanish banks in saying that the country’s economic recovery since 2013 after several years of recession was boosting lending. Spain received a €41 billion bailout for its banks from eurozone partners in 2012 to save its financial sector from collapse. In the second quarter, the bank more than doubled its profit from its business in Spain to €462 million from a year earlier. BBVA said losses from exposure to Spain’s construction sector, whose collapse in 2008 triggered the crisis, also lessened in the first half of this year by 35 percent from a year earlier, to €300 million. In the United States, one of its
major markets, BBVA saw its profits in the first half of 2015 rise by nearly 19 percent to €286 million. Catalan lender CaixaBank said it made net profits of €708 million over the first six months of this year - a 75-percent surge from a year ago. The bank, which concentrates mostly on the Spanish market, said it was boosted by “intense commercial activity” and by its takeover of British bank Barclays’ operations in Spain. Another Spanish bank, Banco Popular, said Friday its quarterly profits rose
by seven percent in the second quarter to €96.5 million. On Thursday Spain and Europe’s biggest bank by capitalisation, Santander, said its quarterly profits surged 17.2 percent to €1.7 billion on growth in markets including Britain and a weak euro. The earnings were lower than forecast by analysts however and disappointed investors. BBVA shares were 0.78 percent lower in mid-morning trading on the Madrid stock exchange Friday. CaixaBank shares were 1.8 percent lower and Banco Popular down 3.7 percent, in an IBEX stock index that was down by 0.29 percent overall. thelocal

Maradona family feud keeps Argentineans glued to their TV sets

Ongoing battle between soccer legend and ex-wife is playing out in court and on screen Maradona skips court date in embezzlement suit against ex-wife Ever since Diego Maradona filed a lawsuit against his ex-wife, for allegedly embezzling some €7.5 million of his fortune, Argentineans have been glued to their television sets, watching the accusations fly between the great soccer legend and his family on rival gossip shows. “He is being brainwashed,” says Giannina, Maradona’s daughter, who, along with her sister Dalma, has been defending their mother, Claudia Villafañe, on TV and via Twitter. Interesting facts about ourselves
The Human Body is a treasure trove of mysteries -- one that still confounds doctors and scientists about the details of its working. It's not an overstatement to say that every part of your body is a miracle. Here are 50 facts about your body, some of which may leave you stunned. 1. It's possible for your body to survive without a surprisingly large fraction of its internal organs. Even if you lose your stomach, your spleen, 75% of your liver, 80% of your intestines, one kidney, one lung, and virtually every organ from your pelvic and groin area, you wouldn't be very healthy, but you would live. 2. During your lifetime, you will produce enough saliva to fill two swimming pools. Actually, saliva is more important than you realize. If your saliva cannot dissolve something, you cannot taste it. 3. The largest cell in the human body is the female egg and the smallest is the male sperm. The egg is actually the only cell in the body that is visible by the naked eye. 4. The strongest muscle in the human body is the tongue and the hardest bone is the jawbone. 5. Human feet have 52 bones, accounting for one quarter of all the human body's bones. 6. Feet have 500,000 sweat glands and can produce more than a pint of sweat a day. 7. The acid in your stomach is strong enough to dissolve razor blades. The reason it doesn't eat away at your stomach is that the cells of your stomach wall renew themselves so frequently that you get a new stomach lining every three to four days. 8. The human lungs contain approximately 2,400 kilometers (1,500 mi) of airways and 300 to 500 million hollow cavities, having a total surface area of about 70 square meters, roughly the same area as one side of a tennis court. Furthermore, if all of the capillaries that surround the lung cavities were unwound and laid end to end, they would extend for about 992 kilometers. Also, your left lung is smaller than your right lung to make room for your heart. 9. Sneezes regularly exceed 100 mph, while coughs clock in at about 60 mph. 10. Your body gives off enough heat in 30 minutes to bring half a gallon of water to a boil. 11. Your body has enough iron in it to make a nail 3 inches long. 12. Earwax production is necessary for good ear health. It protects the delicate inner ear from bacteria, fungus, dirt and even insects. It also cleans and lubricates the ear canal. 13. Everyone has a unique smell, except for identical twins, who smell the same. 14. Your teeth start growing 6 months before you are
born. This is why one out of every 2,000 newborn infants has a tooth when they are born. 15. A baby's head is one-quarter of its total length, but by the age of 25 will only be one-eighth of its total length. This is because people's heads grow at a much slower rate than the rest of their bodies. 16. Babies are born with 300 bones, but by adulthood the number is reduced to 206. Some of the bones, like skull bones, get fused into each other, bringing down the total number. 17. It's not possible to tickle yourself. This is because when you attempt to tickle yourself you are totally aware of the exact time and manner in which the tickling will occur, unlike when someone else tickles you. 18. Less than one third of the human race has 20-20 vision. This means that two out of three people cannot see perfectly. 19. Your nose can remember 50,000 different scents. But if you are a woman, you are a better smeller than men, and will remain a better smeller throughout your life. 20. The human body is estimated to have 60,000 miles of blood vessels. 21. The three things pregnant women dream most of during their first trimester are frogs, worms and potted plants. Scientists have no idea why this is so, but attribute it to the growing imbalance of hormones in the body during pregnancy. 22. The life span of a human hair is 3 to 7 years on average. Every day the average person loses 60-100 strands of hair. But don't worry, you must lose over 50% of your scalp hairs before it is apparent to anyone. 23. The human brain cell can hold 5 times as much information as an encyclopedia. Your brain uses 20% of the oxygen that enters your bloodstream, and is itself made up of 80% water. Though it interprets pain signals from the rest of the body, the brain itself cannot feel pain. 24. The tooth is the only part of the human body that can't repair itself. 25. Your eyes are always the same size from birth but your nose and ears never stop growing. 26. By 60 years of age, 60% of men and 40% of women will snore. 27. We are about 1 cm taller in the morning than in the evening, because during normal activities during the day, the cartilage in our knees and other areas slowly compress. 28. The brain operates on the same amount of power as 10-watt light bulb, even while you are sleeping. In fact, the brain is much more active at night than during the day. 29. Nerve impulses to and from the brain travel as

It is a fact that people who dream more often and more vividly, on an average have a higher Intelligence Quotient. 31. The fastest growing nail is on the middle finger. 32. Facial hair grows faster than any other hair on the body. This is true for men as well as women. 33. There are as many hairs per square inch on your body as a chimpanzee. 34. The colder the room you sleep in, the higher the chances are that you'll have a bad dream. 38. Human lips have a reddish color because of the great concentration of tiny capillaries just below the skin. 39. Three hundred million cells die in the human body every minute. 40. Like fingerprints, every individual has an unique tongue print that can be used for identification. 41. A human head remains conscious for about 15 to 20 seconds after it has been decapitated. 42. It takes 17 muscles to smile and 43 to frown. 43. Humans can make do longer without food than sleep. Provided there is water, the average human could survive a month to two months without food depending on their body fat and other factors. Sleep deprived people, however, start experiencing radical personality and psychological changes after only a few sleepless days. The longest recorded time anyone has ever gone without sleep is 11 days, at the end of which the experimenter was awake, but stumbled over words, hallucinated and frequently forgot what he was doing. 44. The most common blood type in the world is Type O. The rarest blood type, A-H or Bombay blood, due to the location of its discovery, has been found in less than hundred people since it was discovered. 45. To anyone who has ever enjoyed an afternoon nap while ensconced in a hammock gently rocking between two trees, it will come as no surprise that this centuries-old snoozing sling can help people fall asleep faster and achieve deeper slumber than regular beds, according to new research. What you may not know, however, is that the hammock has a rich and varied history, from its Mayan origins to its adoption by the military to its present-day status as a summertime backyard fixture. Many anthropologists believe that the hammock dates back some 1,000 years to Central America, where the Maya and other indigenous peoples crafted them out of tree bark or plant fibers. Suspended beds prevented contact with the dirty ground and offered protection from snakes, rodents and other poisonous or simply pesky creatures. According to accounts by 16th-century explorers, people would place hot coals or kindle small fires under their hammocks to stay warm or ward off insects as they slumbered. It is thought that Columbus and his men became the first Europeans to glimpse—and perhaps experience—the hammock when they noticed their widespread use among the Taino people of the Bahamas. They brought several examples of the woven sleeping nets back to Spain. During the colonial era, Spaniards and other Europeans brought cotton, canvas and other cloths to the New World, many of which were eventually used by traditional hammock weavers along with more time-honored materials. In many parts of what is now Latin America, colonists preferred hammocks to the stationary beds of their native lands, in part because of their soothing motion and hygiene benefits. Pero de Magalhães Gandavo, the Portuguese-born chronicler of colonial Brazilian history, wrote in 1570, “Most of the beds in Brazil are hammocks, hung in the house from two cords. This custom they took from the Indians of the land.” By the mid-16th century, the English and Spanish navies had adopted hammocks as their primary on-deck sleeping apparatuses. Unlike its counterpart on the other side of the Atlantic, however, the European take on the hammock was typically made of heavy

canvas and therefore significantly less ventilated than its inspiration from the other side of the Atlantic. Sailors stewed in these portable yet famously uncomfortable beds for three centuries, including during World War I and World War II. From the Civil War until the Vietnam War, members of the U.S. Navy were also issued hammocks for sleeping on the go. In the late 19th century, the British prison system attempted to replace cots with hammocks, attaching them to the walls or bars of jail cells with large brass hooks and rings. This arrangement saved space and cut costs but only lasted until inmates discovered the hardware’s value as weapons. In the United States, meanwhile, by the turn of the century hammocks had caught on both as a leisure item for wealthy families and as a cheap, practical sleeping solution for frontier farmers. The first known mass producer of hammocks opened in Pawleys Island, South Carolina, in 1889. Less than two decades later, the suspended beds became an essential part of army physician William Gorgas’ plan to eradicate yellow fever during the construction of the Panama Canal. Hammocks could easily be enclosed in mosquito

A new study conducted by a team of Swiss researchers and published in the June issue of “Current Biology” has offered a scientific explanation for the longstanding global hammock craze. Their results also support the ancient—and still very much alive—tradition of rocking children to sleep. By History.com Staff feet of rope between this knot and your last row of knots. Growing plants in full sun, especially within containers, can be challenging unless you choose varieties that are tolerant of these conditions. Many full sun plants are also tolerant of drought and arid conditions, making them ideal for potted environments too. For instance, rosemary is an attractive, heat-tolerant, sun-loving herb that can be grown in areas with full sun as well as containers. Full Sun Border Plants Sunny borders are popular locations for flowers that do well in direct sun. When choosing plants for areas with full sun, it’s generally better to stick with native plantings whenever possible. These plants are well suited to your particular area and climate, giving them the best chance for success. However, you can also select plants that share similar growing

Do you feel plagued with perspiration and want to know how to fight excessive sweat? 1. TRY ANTIPERSPIRANTS WITH ALUMINUM CHLORIDE One of the easiest ways to fight excessive sweat is to try an antiperspirant made especially for excessive sweating like Certain Dri, Gillette Clinical Strength or Drysol. All of these antiperspirants are made specifically for those who sweat excessively and contain the metal aluminum chloride. If you haven’t had much luck with other over-the-counter antiperspirants, you might want to give one of these a try. One thing to keep in mind is that aluminum in antiperspirants can cause #skin irritation or cause a serious allergic reaction so make sure you aren’t allergic before you try these out. There is also a risk of aluminum toxicity if these products are used in high concentration such as eating or inhaling it which can cause nerve or kidney damage and osteomalacia which has been linked to Alzheimer’s or breast cancer so although you’re highly unlikely to eat or inhale it in high concentrations, if you want to stay on the safe side, stick to sticks made without aluminum! 2. El Refugio - Almeria City
Almeria City isn’t just an airport; though most just land and scuttle off to their homes or holiday destinations without wondering about what else is on offer. The City has a beautiful old quarter with excellent restaurants, tapas bars, art galleries and museums. Stunning architecture abounds, topped by the Moorish Alcazaba towering above the city. The Paseo de Almeria is a broad tree lined boulevard; running from the port to Plaza Purchena; it’s filled with chain stores and boutiques. It’s the commercial hub of the city with some curious black news stand kiosks dotted along the way. Another world however lies hidden the surface and the kiosks have trap doors leading 3metres and deeper below ground. At Plaza Purchena for the grand sum of 2€ the intrepid can learn more. The entrance to El Refugio is a modern glass building with a suspended glass floor so the foundations of ancient Moorish walls can be seen. Here the story unfolds firstly via a short film,
The footnote states “Duncan Burr is Licensed Lay Reader”, but does anyone actually understand that? So, to assist, let me explain that I’m NOT a Priest, Vicar or any form of ‘fulltime’ Pastor or Minister, but an unpaid, voluntary worker in the Church of England, who before retirement, used to have a proper job. In 1962, having just qualified in Civil-Engineering, I found myself using LEO-5 (the first range of commercial computers in the World, built by Lyons Catering in 1953), swiftly followed by other machines, developing CivilEngineering and Architectural Design Software. These early computers required more space than a 4-bedroom house, yet had less computing power than many modern watches, so needed careful and efficient programming, using primitive ‘machine’ or ‘assembly’ code, rather than languages like Cobol or Fortran that became available later. From a Christian family, I’d considered myself Christian since childhood, so found considerable challenge in the evolving technologies of computing, which necessitated research into subjects like ‘logical analysis’ and ‘theory of time’. Surprisingly perhaps, I actually found these strengthened, rather than weakened my faith as I observed the absolute logic of the Universe around, seemingly controlled by defined laws, running very much like a well programmed machine in which any input necessarily has a profound
and pre-determined effect. And the more I studied Time and the implications of any consideration for manipulating that dimension, the more I found myself confronted by the inevitability of a higher power, without beginning or end, remarkably similar to the Biblical concept of God. It therefore seemed natural, once career and family constraints permitted, to offer such abilities as I possessed in service of this Lord of time and reason, as personified in Jesus Christ, so embarked on a three year (evenings and weekends) training course to be licensed as a ‘Reader’ by the Bishop of Blackburn. Now, retired, without that proper job and living in Spain, my license has been transferred to a large parish/chaplaincy (about the size of Wales) centred on Mojacar within the Diocese of Europe. So that’s what being a Lay Reader’s all about, but of course we can all serve God without training and licensing. Details of a number of English Language Churches are given in Sol Noticeboard for any who wish to Worship, but further information about the Anglican Church and details of forthcoming events may be seen on the web site www. mojacarchurch.org Duncan Burr is Licensed Lay Reader for the Anglican Chaplaincy of Costa Almeria and Costa Cálida and may be contacted at djburr@avired. com

When you sit and think about it, mankind has invented some amazing things. From the discovery of fire then the invention of the wheel around 3500 BC, we’ve really taken off and the years afterwards have seen amazing strides. Just look at some of the things like penicillin, the simple nail, the printing press and so on and you get to think, wow, what a pretty remarkable bunch we are! And yes, we are. In fact, as Tony Blackburn may have said, the hits just keep on coming, with things like, television, micro chips…oven chips and so on. But it’s not all wondrous, sometimes, as you’d expect, we let ourselves down badly with some downright silly ideas which should never have seen the light of day. So while we acknowledge the prowess of those individuals with vision, determination and insight, I’d also like to look at some of the ideas that have come from others who, well, may well have been out in the sun a bit too long. We’ve all seen selfie sticks, those telescopic Graham is married to Helen and has a daughter, Alice. He lives part of the year near Albox, but works in Qatar, teaching. replacements for a friend just when you needed them most. Now the Japanese have taken this idea a step further. For those who really don’t have a nearest and dearest to share the spotlight with them, they’ve come up with a selfie stick that’s disguised as a hand which, when the photo is taken, shows you holding , not the end of a cold metallic telescopic stick, but a seemingly real human hand, making it look like you have friends. This may prove particularly useful for politicians after losing-or winning for that matter- elections. I also have to commend whoever had the bright idea of a baby mop! The company that came up with the idea is called BetterThanPants.com-if you’re tempted you could buy one. This is an ordinary baby grow suit, but attached to the arms and legs are specially designed mop heads to clean the floor as baby crawls! Apparently they’ve sold quite a few. I’m the first to admit that these things, along with a special foot hammock you can suspend under your desk for added comfort, or grass flip flops which give the feel of walking on grass without the grass, are not in the same league as, say the steam engine, internet or the abacus, but they certainly raise a smile, which has to be worth something doesn’t it!

THE ONLY PROPERTY SUPPLEMENT ON THE COSTAS!!!! LOOKING TO BUY OR RENT? FIND YOUR DREAM HOME INSIDE! Your guide to property in Spain
Spain has long held great appeal for buyers seeking a property in a location with year-round fantastic weather and an interesting cultural heritage, and is one of the most popular European countries for those searching for a property abroad to begin their search. Spain is home to a diverse range of regions and cities, from the sunseekers’ favourites such as the Costa del Sol and the Costa Blanca, the rugged island resorts such as Ibiza and Mallorca and the culture-rich cities such as Barcelona and capital city Madrid. The Property Market in Spain While the property market in Spain has suffered at the hands of the global recession, this is actually good news for buyers of Spanish homes. Many sellers in Spain are accepting prices far below the asking price, meaning buyers can snap up some real bargains throughout the country. Whether you’re looking for a villa a stone’s throw from the beach, an apartment in the heart of a bustling city or a country retreat, Kyero.com is here to help you find whatever it is you’re looking for in Spain. Why Buy in Spain There are many reasons why people may want to buy a property in Spain, especially now while property prices are low. Many people opt to buy a villa or a holiday home which can be rented out to other holidaymakers for part of the year. These tend to be situated around the most popular tourist resorts, such as Malaga, the Balearic Islands and the ever-popular Marbella. Not all of these areas have been affected as badly as others by the recession, so anyone willing to pay a higher price for a premium tourist-friendly location will not be disappointed.
Business workers may find themselves seeking a property in or around one of the major cities. The economy in Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia remains relatively strong, and those making frequent business trips to one of these cities may choose to buy a property in the area. While prices in the city itself may remain high,
For example, signing a reservation agreement means you have a set amount of time to pay the full amount (on top of your reservation fee) before you lose the house.
there are many locations around these cities which are more accessible to first-time buyers in Spain. Alternatively, there are some stunning towns in northern Spain which are dotted with beautiful farmhouses in swathes of Spanish countryside. How To Buy a Property in Spain There are a few things to remember if you’re planning to buy a property in Spain. Firstly, you should get to grips with the full buying process.
what you want from your contract in advance. There are additional fees for the administration process of buying in Spain, and many buyers run into difficulties if they attempt to alter the property without permission or if there is a dispute with the builders, so get everything agreed and signed before you allow any work to happen on your new property.
There are several different contract types which may or may not suit you, so be sure to decide exactly

Overnight Hotel Stays Up 1.6% in June According to data released last week by the National Statistics Institute, some 32 million overnight stays were recorded in Spanish hotels in June, representing an increase of 1.6% over the same month of 2014, while the average length of stay fell by 2.7% and stood at 3.4 nights per traveller. The year-on-year rise in overnight hotel stays in June was due, mainly, to the 6.3% increase in the number of overnight stays made by residents in Spain while, in contrast, the number of overnight stays made by nonresident visitors fell by 0.6%
compared to the same month of the previous year. During the first six months of the year, overnight stays increased by 3.3% compared with the same period of 2014.

Real Estate Investment Revenues Rise
A recent report published by property portal, idealista.com, reveals that investing in real estate in Spain, in any of the products they analysed, offers a greater return than that registered 12 months ago, with even
the lowest returns offering double the profitability of the 10 year State bonds (2%). According to the study, which looks at the sale and rental prices of different real estate products in order to calculate their gross profitability, commercial premises remain the most profitable real estate investment. Buying commercial premises in Spain to rent out offers a gross return of 7.6%, compared to 6.2% a year ago, while offices offer a return of 6.3%. In contrast, garages are the real estate product offering least profitability, with a return standing at 4.6% at the end of the second quarter, compared with the 3.6%
registered in June 2014. Returns on investment in housing for rent have also increased during the last twelve months. Among the Spanish capitals, Lleida is the most profitable, with a gross return of 7.8%, followed by Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (6.2%), Palma de Mallorca (5.8%), Huesca (5.7%) and Huelva (5.7%), while the profitability offered in Madrid is 5%, slightly higher than that of Barcelona (4.8%). However, the Spanish capitals with the lowest returns on rental housing are Ourense (3.3%), A Coruña (3.6%) and San Sebastián (3.8%), followed by Lugo (4%). Business premises are the product with the greatest profitability in most of the capitals, with the highest returns being recorded in Cordoba (9.2%) and Granada (8.5%), followed by Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (8.3%), Málaga (8.1%) and Zaragoza (8%), while the rental revenues in Madrid stood at 7.6%, and in Barcelona they stood at 7.5%. Castellón, on the other hand, offers the least profitable return for investors on the rental of retail premises, at only 4.6%, followed by Salamanca (5.3%) and Cádiz (5.6%).

Trips to their favourite destination, the U.S., will cost about 10 per cent more than at the beginning of the year, since the Canadian dollar fell from about 86 cents U.S. to 78 cents. But the loonie hasn't been faring well this year against most other currencies, either, which could present a problem for those with a little money saved up for a foreign vacation. CBC News looked at the Canadian dollar's

performance compared to 20 other major currencies and found just three countries where the Canadian dollar should go further today than it did before the Bank of Canada stepped in at the beginning of the year. Of course, if you are thinking about where to travel, you probably might also want to know where currency rates will fluctuate between now and your travel dates, and that outlook also isn't good for Canadians. Maybe you shouldn't postpone that U.S. trip after all. Plunging loonie means inflation in store: Don Pittis The Canadian dollar story right now is mostly about the strength of the U.S. dollar as the American economy gathers steam. In 2011, the loonie was worth more than the greenback, but since then it has been flying south, like a snowbird at the beginning of winter. http://www.cbc.ca/

Once upon a time in a land far, far away lived a boy called Jack, which as we all know is short for ‘Loco Paco’. He lived with his widowed Mother who, to make ends meet was forced to weld boilerplates in their front parlour. Their only asset was a three toed Brazilian Treehopper. With the downward turn in shipbuilding and the reduced need for boilerplates Paco and his Mum began feeling the pinch. Well, his Mum certainly was but that’s another story. She decided the time had come to take Cuthbert, their Brazilian Treehopper to market. Paco was given strict instructions to go straight to market, talk to no one and get a good price for their digitally challenged Treehopper. It was with heavy heart that Paco adjusted Cuthbert’s bridle and led him down the dusty road out of Alqueria. The sun was shining and Paco picked wild flowers as Cuthbert galloped and gambolled along the roadside. On the dusty road Paco met a large wolf, who realising he was in the wrong fairy tale disappeared in search of a morsel of granny or a trio of tasty porkers. Again on the dusty road. This time Paco met José Boilpopo an itinerant carbuncle lancer from Mijas. José had an eye for a bargain. Seeing Paco was an imbecile he exchanged a handful of magic Remitroot beans for the precious three toed Brazilian Treehopper. Loco Paco was delighted, but then Loco Paco was delighted with the Liberal Democratic Party and dehydrated meals. To say Paco’s Mother was impressed with her son’s business acumen wouldn’t be quite true. She made several references to father being like son,
viewpoint
which was slightly unfair as his father was only one possible on a shortlist of five. The beans where duly thrown through the nearest window. Paco was packed off to bed and his Mother began a meaningful relationship with a large bottle of domestic gin. The morning dawned bright and fresh. Paco, yawning and scratching stared in disbelief at a huge Remitroot stalk reaching into the clouds and beyond. Paco, being inquisitive and an idiot promptly began climbing the stalk. Higher and higher he went, through the clouds and above until he was aware of a large figure descending. It was Bone Muncher Sanchez the feared giant of the stratosphere. Paco nimbly reversed his course and was soon back on the ground. Grabbing a conveniently placed axe he swiftly chopped down the Remitroot stalk. Down came the stalk and down came the giant. Stalk and giant lay broken, shattered upon the ground among the rubble and desolation that was once the whitewashed village of Alqueria. Paco’s Mum stared down at the boy, the light of battle still shining bright in his eyes, the axe gleaming in his hand. “Sometimes Paco you really p*** me off”. Said she.
Rooted Ambition
There are some rules in our house; some lines in the sand that may not be overstepped. One of those rules is No animals in the bedrooms. Another one is No cats on the kitchen table. Her Royal Highness Sayyida Al Hurra, despite her lofty status, is impeccably mannered in such matters. However, her son, Mr Tommy Fluffypants, is not. He knows the rules, and makes it his personal business to disregard them – he has no scruples and no conscience whatsoever, just a rooted ambition to mould the world to his personal preference. This is a typical encounter: ‘Tommy, get off the table.’ I lift him off and put him on the floor, from where he regards me with the round-eyed surprise of the totally innocent. ‘But I wasn’t on the table.’ ‘Yes you were.’ ‘That wasn’t me.’ ‘Tommy, I’ve just picked you off the table, so yes, it was you.’ ‘No, it wasn’t me. Some invisible aliens kidnapped my body and put it on the table.’ ‘No Tommy, it was you. There are no invisible aliens, it was you, you bad kittencat.’ ‘But if the aliens are invisible, how do you know they aren’t there?’ The unwavering round-eyed stare continued. I felt it was time to shift ground, my argument was in danger of being shot down – by a cat! ‘You have been watching too much television. Invisible aliens are kept safe inside the television and they can’t get out. You are a bad, bad kittencat. You are telling fibs, and

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk that is very, very bad. You are a bad, bad, bad kittencat.’ Obviously Tommy felt it was now time for him to change tack. Still without dropping his eyes from mine he reared up and wrapped his little soft paws around my thigh. ‘Cuddle me.’ ‘No, you are a bad kittencat. You don’t get cuddles for being bad.’ ‘If you don’t cuddle me I will be emotionally scarred for the rest of my life.’ ‘Exactly how do you work that one out?’ ‘You reprimanded me. Mr Spock said that if children are reprimanded they suffer emotional scarring for the rest of their lives, unless they are cuddled.’ I picked him up and cuddled him, a little bundle of boneless fur, his fluffy exterior hiding a mind with all the manipulative powers of Machiavelli. ‘You mean Dr Spock. Mr Spock is the man with the pointy ears.’ ‘Whatever. Now, can I go in the bedroom?’

FOOD & ENTERTAINING... italian cuisine
Fig & prosciutto pizzettas Ingredients knob of butter 3 shallots, finely diced 250g full-fat crème fraîche 50g parmesan, finely grated 4 ripe figs, cut into chunks 125g ball good-quality buffalo mozzarella, roughly torn 2 handfuls rocket 6 slices prosciutto, torn into
strips 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil 2 tbsp good balsamic vinegar For the dough 400g strong white bread flour, plus extra for dusting 7g sachet fast-action dried yeast 1 tsp salt 4 tbsp olive oil
Impress when entertaining with these mini pizzas topped with creamy mozzarella, sweet fruit and salty Italian ham method To make the dough, mix the flour, yeast and salt in a bowl. Measure 250ml hand-warm water into a jug, add the oil, then tip into the flour mixture. Mix together with a wooden spoon, followed by your hands, to make a wet dough – add a splash more warm water if needed. Cover with oiled cling film and leave somewhere warm-ish to rise for 1 hr or until doubled in size. Heat the butter, then soften the shallots and set aside. 2.Heat oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7. Tip the dough onto a floured surface, knead briefly to smooth, then divide into 6-8 balls. Roll out each to a thin circle, then arrange on flour-dusted baking sheets. Mix the crème fraîche, Parmesan and shallots with a little salt and lots of black pepper. Spread over the dough and bake for 10-15 mins until crisp at the edges and slightly puffed up. 3.Toss the figs and mozzarella with the rocket. Sprinkle over the pizzettas with the prosciutto. Mix the oil and vinegar, drizzle over the pizzettas and serve.
PIZZA HISTORY
Almost 3000 years of food evolution has taken place for the pizza pie to reach its current delicious state today. Although flat breads have been around for 6000 years, the word “pizziare” started appearing in Italian writings as far back as 1000 B.C. The word pizza itself is believed to have originated from an “Old Italian” word meaning “a point,” which in turn became the Italian word “pizziare,” which means to pinch, or to pluck. Tomatoes were first introduced to Italy from South America in 1522. At first the tomato was believed to be poisonous. Fortunately, the poorer peasants of the region finally overcame their doubts about tomatoes in the 17th century and began adding it to the bread dough, and the first pizzas were created. As the popularity of the tomato became widespread, mozzarella cheese was slowly gaining ground. Mozzarella had become available in Italy only after water buffalo were imported from India in the 7th century, (mozzarella was
first made with water buffalo milk). Its popularity grew very slowly until the last half of the 18th century, but the cheese and tomatoes did not meet on a pizza until 1889. In 1889, an Italian tavern owner named Don Raffaele Esposito developed a pizza featuring tomatoes, mozzarella cheese and basil – ingredients bearing the colors of the Italian flag. He named it the Margherita Pizza, after the Queen of Italy, Margherita Teresa Giovanni. Thus, modern-day tomato-and-cheese pizza was born. In the later half of the 19th century, pizza migrated to America with the Italians. By the turn of the century, the Italian immigrants had begun to open their own bakeries and were selling groceries as well as pizza. Gennaro Lombardi opened the first true U.S. pizzeria in 1905 at 53 1/3 Spring Street in New York City, a part of town known as “Little Italy.” Source: Wheat Foods Council www. wheatfoods.org

FOOD & ENTERTAINING... this Italian dish uses Lamb tagliata with thinlyTraditionally sliced beef, rocket and Parmesan, version is given a simple twist with British seasonal produce watercress & tomatoes but this Ingredients
tomatoes
handful fresh rosemary, needles chopped
1 tbsp redcurrant jelly
2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
Strawberry panna cotta Serve this creamy set Italian dessert with a top layer of fresh strawberry sauce and our homemade salted almond snaps on the side
method For the panna cotta, put the gelatine leaves in a small bowl of cold water to soften – this will take about 5 mins. Meanwhile, pour the cream, milk and sugar into a pan, split the vanilla pod, scrape out the seeds and add, along with the pod, to the cream mixture. Heat gently until hot, but not bubbling. Remove the gelatine leaves from the water, squeeze out any excess liquid then add, one at a time, to the hot cream. Stir until dissolved. Leave to stand for 20-30 mins until cooled – the vanilla pods
For the strawberries 400g strawberries, hulled and halved, or quartered if very large 1½ tsp cornflour 50g white caster sugar should be suspended in the liquid by this point. Strain the mixture through a sieve into 6 serving glasses, then chill for at least 3 hrs. 2.Toss the strawberries with the cornflour and sugar in a saucepan. Place over a medium heat and cook for 4-5 mins, until the released juices thicken and the strawberries soften. Set aside to cool. Once completely cooled, top the set panna cottas with the strawberry mixture. Chill until ready to serve. Recipe from Good Food magazine
2 tbsp capers, drained and rinsed
4 thick British boneless lamb leg steaks or steaks cut from lamb rumps (about 450g/1lb in total)
100g bag British watercress, thick stems removed
250g British baby plum
good crusty bread, to serve
100g feta cheese, crumbled
method Rub the rosemary and 1 tbsp of the oil over the lamb, and leave to marinate for 30 mins at room temperature. 2.Heat a frying pan until very hot. Wipe most of the rosemary from the lamb, then season the steaks with plenty of flaky salt and freshly ground black pepper. Add the steaks and the tomatoes to the pan. Sear the meat for 2 mins on one side until golden, then turn and cook for 2 mins more. This will give pink lamb. Transfer the meat and tomatoes to a plate and leave to rest. 3.Take the pan from the heat. Spoon in the redcurrant jelly, pour in the vinegar and remaining oil, then whisk to make a warm dressing. Add the capers, plus any juices from the lamb plate. 4.Slice the lamb thickly on an angle. Spread over a large platter with the watercress and tomatoes, then finish with a crumbling of cheese. Spoon over the warm dressing and enjoy straight away with crusty bread.

Wine: why Spanish wines work with barbecues
Yes
Argentina and Australia may be the masters of the barbecue, but it’s Spanish wines that often go best with grilled food
http://www.bloorstculturecorridor.com/
La Mancha vineyard If you’re having a barbecue, you could do a lot worse than look to Spain for a wine to accompany it. It’s instinctive, when picking barbecue wines, to look for inspiration to countries where barbecuing is an art form, particularly Argentina, Australia and South Africa. But big, lush reds are not always the best choice for a barbie, especially if you’re just grilling your food, rather than slathering it in a sticky marinade. (And even if you are, think how refreshing a cold beer might be instead.) In which case, maybe you’d be better off with a cool red rather than a jammy one. Bodegas Fontana Oveja Tinta 2014: a brilliant foil for kebabs When I look back over my tasting notes for the last few months, the wines against which I’ve consistently scribbled “BBQ wine” have come from Spain, not the new world. And no, not rioja, either (though there’s nothing wrong with a vibrant young rioja joven or crianza, which get no, or comparatively little, oak ageing), but Spain’s up-and-coming regions such as Uclés in Castila La Mancha, Utiel Requena in the south and Bierzo up in the north (about which more in a couple of weeks). For example, I love the vibrantly fruity Bodegas Fontana Oveja Tinta 2014 (£9 Oddbins), from Uclés, which is made from graciano and strikes me as ideal for the robust flavour of grilled food (and, given the label, especially lamb). At 14% abv, it’s not exactly light, but it is wonderfully fresh and juicy. The corresponding white, Oveja Blanca (also £9 Oddbins; 13% abv), is a heady, scented dry muscat that’s one for gewürztraminer fans, and a good choice to kick off a
barbecue; it might even be a decent match for Yotam Ottolenghi’s Thai-spiced lamb chops this week, which would suit an aromatic white much more than a red. The same bodega also produces Mesta Old Vines Tempranillo 2014 (£8 Marks & Spencer; 14% abv), which is made in a similarly vivid style. Another variety to look out for is bobal, which it turns out is the third most widely planted grape variety in Spain (who knew?). Asda’s hugely drinkable, juicy Wine Atlas Bobal 2014 (£4.97; 13% abv), from Utiel Requena just north of Valencia, is an affordable starting point, or try the more powerful Vox Populi Bobal 2011 (£8.99 as part of a mix-and-match deal at Majestic; 14% abv), which would be a great partner for Yotam’s barbecued celeriac. Aldi, meanwhile, has added a new blend to its Spanish Toro Loco range: a Bobal Merlot 2013 (£4.49; 13% abv), which is an absolute belter. Finally, if you’re not hung up about own-brand wines, Waitrose Mellow and Fruity Spanish Red (13.5% abv) is just that: mellow and fruity. Also, at £4.99, it’s great value. matchingfoodandwine.com

A Hollywood Animal Trainer's Secrets For
Getting Dogs To Act On Cue
White God is about a dog who is separated from his owner (Zsófia Psotta) when her father forces her to give him up. Teresa Ann Miller worked as a trainer for the Hungarian film. Animal trainer Teresa Ann Miller is used to working with furry performers, but she says the Hungarian film White God was especially challenging. "This wasn't necessarily a film with an animal in it," Miller tells Fresh Air's Terry Gross. "It was a dog leading the film and telling the story. Directed by Kornél Mundruczó, White God tells the story of a mixed-breed dog, Hagen, who is abandoned alongside a highway and who then bands together with other discarded dogs to get revenge against the people who have mistreated them. Miller helped cast and train the two dogs who shared the role of Hagen. She says that casting was particularly difficult: "Kornél [Mundruczó] ... was very clear that this one lead dog had to be different than the other 250 dogs around him, mixed breeds. So there's a challenge right there to find that one-in-a-million dog; however, he needed to have a photo double just for the amount of work that was scripted ... so it was a two-in-a-million dog that we were looking for." We even had a seal in our bathtub one time overnight because my dad was working with the seal the next day. Miller's father, Karl Miller, was an animal trainer who worked on films like Beethoven and Cujo, and who frequently brought animals home with him. "It was such an experience growing up to be surrounded by so many critters," she says. "We had chickens one day, a little raccoon the next day. We even had a seal in our bathtub one time overnight because my dad was working with the seal the next day." On casting the lead dog in White God It was actually first based on his appearance, which sometimes it is here — that’s kind of Hollywood, right? ... It was appearance first, and, of course, we wanted to be
sure he was great with kids. And this dog had grown up in a family with small children and what have you, so we knew he would be good with kids. And from then on the challenge was exposing him to everything. He had never been out of his front yard. He lived in a very small town in Arizona, hadn’t seen very many things, hadn’t seen cars in traffic. And it actually added to our experience in Budapest and added to [his] experience on film, seeing things for the first time. On how a trainer uses body language and voice to affect dog behavior. God. "This wasn't necessarily a film with an animal in it," she says. "It was a dog leading the film and telling the story." Everything that the dog does is a reflection of either my body language or my tone of voice. ... In a lot of your obedience ... work you give very, very direct cues ... one-word and one-syllable commands to the dog. And you get a quick reaction to what you're asking him to do, ultimately. So you would tell him to sit, stay, come, what have you. When you're working with animals in film, what we do is we use a much more relaxed attitude, a much more relaxed and loose personality in ourselves. So I might say, "Hey, get over there and stay. No, stay, look ..." and that keeps him looking and keeps him guessing and gives him a little bit more range to be able to see what's going on around him, and yet I can keep his attention at the same time. Book Review
Driving Over Lemons by Chris Stewart
Dark shadows clouded my dreams of the sunny farm bright with geraniums and orange blossom. A valley teeming with murderous snakes guarding the entrance to a place of stones and scorpions. Most of us can empathise with Chris and Ana for deciding to move to an idyllic but challenging life in the mountains in Andalucia. Isn’t it everyone’s dream perhaps? Or perhaps that should read nightmare. Chris found his paradise early on in his house-hunting days. La Herradura would have been his first choice but he was discouraged from purchasing it because of complications in multiple owners not wishing to sell. His second choice was El Valero set amongst orange and lemon trees, olives and blossoming almonds. What could be more Spanish or delightful to the eye? A mountain farm, just what he desired. My head was whirling with excitement; wild ideas and dreams pouring in. Once the excitement levelled, he then realised why Pedro Romero was so keen to sell- a dam was going to be built across the gorge and flood the valley. In simple terms it meant that paradise would be flooded. Paradise submerged is what he calls it. The nightmare begins right here. Ana came to inspect the property and wasn’t particularly impressed and handed Chris a list of all the repairs needed before the house could become their home. Romero and his wife were still living at the farm and there was tension in the air: A thick silence ensued. I felt like a dead pig in a tea-room. The Stewarts returned to the UK and the intention was to move within 9 months but like an overexcited child, Chris decided after 6 months to return, wanting to learn as much as he could about running the farm before Pedro finally moved out for good. He forges a long-lasting friendship with one of his www.carolnaylor.blogspot.com www.carolesleynaylor.wordpress.com naylorcl@hotmail.es

neighbours, Domingo and his parents. Domingo was an exceptional character showing an endless knowledge of the land and farming. He was wise as well as practically minded. When he was around, things that appeared impossible got done as if by magic. The move to Spain seemed an anti climax as they stared morosely through the pathetic little wedges of window resembling refugees forced to leave a beloved homeland. He soon becomes disillusioned when he discovers rumours that Pedro Romero has taken advantage of his innocence and good nature by stealing from the farm. The Matanzas or pig-killing is a winter tradition with everyone getting involved in one way or another. The men had to fortify themselves with anis or brandy, as much alcohol coursing around the system as was possible. A horrible business with the same mix of repulsion and excitement as bullfighting. Graphic details convey the horror of the occasion. Chris Stewart introduced the modern art of sheepshearing to farmers who still sheared by hand. He told one of the shepherds that he had shorn 150,000 sheep without having to tie one up! The local farmers were sceptical but Chris was an attraction and a good crowd had gathered to watch this event. Buying sheep was important to Chris but Ana had a few reservations. No groom preparing a nuptial chamber for the arrival of his bride could have taken more care than I did in fixing the temporary stable. His small moment of triumph came with the first lambs born on the farm. From then onwards the farm thrived on regular sales of lamb. An abundance of olives weighing 500k brought in extra income. As the future was becoming brighter, Ana announced her
35 pregnancy out of the blue to a shocked husband. Were we really the sort of people to take in this awesome responsibility? Was the eccentric lifestyle we had chosen the right thing for a creature as delicate as a baby? The answer had to be yes. During the labour, Chris kept fainting and had to be removed from the theatre. When a blue rubbery thing was plonked on a towel on the sideboard Chris was paranoid in case the baby was abnormal. Once this blue rubbery thing became recognisable as his daughter he felt very sentimental, transfixed and enslaved. They called her Chloe. She was 3 when they christened her. They celebrated with paella and covered the tables with snowy cloths and wild flowers. Chloe had to be bribed with a bar of chocolate to allow Richard, the retired vicar, to anoint her with holy water and oil but the ceremony went without any hiccups. The informal congregation sang All Things Bright and Beautiful which soared across the valley gathering in strength. We hear about the drought and the heavy rains, the flooding of the river, the awesome erosion when the mountains were almost being swept down to the sea, the sense of isolation, feeling disheartened and threatened. But they survived and became stronger as a family. Chloe thrived and the farm flourished. The Stewarts felt that buying El Valero had been the right decision and they were able to weather the storms. Once you have finished reading Driving Over Lemons you have the sequel to look forward to: A Parrot in the Pepper Tree. Publisher: Sort of Books. ISBN: 0-9535227-0-9 also available on ekindle.

motoring James Bond eat your heart out: The Land Rover concept car that can be driven remotely using your iPhone
Land Rover's Discovery Vision Concept can be driven ‘at very low speed' using a smart phone, tablet or the car's removable console Also features an ‘invisible’ bonnet, laser positioning and 'gesture-controlled' doors Land Rover will showcase Discovery Vision at the New York Motor Show
in the news
Motoring TV presenter Guy Martin facing police probe
They haven't appeared on the same stage since Jeremy Clarkson left Top Gear following a 'fracas' with a producer in March. But fans of the hit BBC2 motoring show celebrated when the 55-year-old presenter was reunited with his former co-hosts Richard Hammond and James May during their Clarkson, Hammond and May Live tour at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast, Northern Ireland on Friday. Jeremy dropped his biggest hint yet of a return to television during the live stadium spin-off of the motoring show. The show, which kicks off a global super car tour, opened with footage of Clarkson throwing a hefty left hand, then the man himself arrived in a hovercraft to the tune of boxing anthem Eye Of The Tiger.
Motoring TV presenter Guy Martin facing police probe
It might not look radical from the outside, but inside Land Rover’s latest concept car has a range of gadgets that would have even James Bond looking on in envy. These include laser positioning sensors, gesturecontrolled systems and an ‘invisible’ bonnet that allows the driver to 'see through' the car to the ground beneath. But the most Q-like development in the Discovery Vision Concept is remote-control drive, which allows anyone to drive the vehicle ‘at very low speed while not actually seated inside it'. Land Rover says this system could be used on and off-road, from coupling a trailer to spotting obstacles during extreme off-road driving. The off-road remote operation function has been dubbed All-Terrain Progress Control and the company claims that it will be ‘semi-autonomous.’ Off-road exploring is further helped by something known as ‘Wade Aid’ which measures depth in patches of water to prevent the vehicle from getting stuck. The ‘see through’ bonnet meanwhile combines cameras in the grille and jet-fighter-style head-up display technology on the windscreen. Although designed principally for those who want to better spot rocky terrain or deep crevices when they take their 4X4s seriously off-road, it could even have some use in the urban jungle by allowing drivers to spot and avoid potholes lurking just out of sight. The car will also be practical with a huge boot and seating for up to seven, with the arrangement operated by touchscreen. Visibility is boosted with the use of day-like light of the laser headlamps which feature smart object tracking and beam-dipping to improve driver safety. Land Rover is set to showcase the Discovery Vision at this week’s New York Motor Show, with the car going on sale later next year. The first car will be based on the current Range Rover Evoque and has an estimated starting price of around £30,000 ($50,100). Gerry McGovern, design director and chief creative officer at Land Rover, said: ‘The Discovery Concept vehicle represents a Vision of our future
family of leisure SUVs. ‘Its modern, relevant and compelling design is a significant shift from Discovery as we know it, while well considered practicality, configurability and Land Rover’s capability seamlessly blend to create a highly desirable vehicle that connects on an emotional level.’ The new Discovery is the latest model announced by prolific Jaguar Land Rover, which is experiencing its greatest ever period. Sales and profits are increasing thanks to models like the Range Rover Evoque and Jaguar F-Type. The company is also investing billions in research and development and the hard work is paying off. Last year it delivered 425,000 vehicles, an increase of 19 per cent.
TV presenter and motorcycle racer Guy Martin is facing a police probe after boasting of reaching speeds of up to 180mph in a 40mph zone while reviewing the new Aston Martin. The 33-year-old, who presents Speed with Guy Martin on Channel 4, wrote a review of the Vanquish Carbon Edition supercar, which costs £203,000, after test driving it on the Isle of Man's TT course. He wrote of how he pressed the accelerator 'flat to the floor' before seeing the speedometer reach 180mph as he entered the village of Sulby, which is part of the TT race and has a speed limit of 40mph. In the review published in the Sunday Times Driving magazine, he wrote: ‘I saw 180mph down Sulby Straight, one of the fastest sections of the course, and the car wasn’t even in top gear.’ He also added of how he roared around the course at 6am in the morning and that he probably completed the course only two minutes shy of the record for a car, which is 19 minutes and 26 seconds.
Porsches and Bentleys 'conk out more often'
Upmarket Bentleys and Porsches are more likely to break down than much cheaper cars, according to a survey. The two marques finished bottom of a 38-strong table of vehicle manufacturers judged on reliability. Thousands of cars aged three to eight years old were assessed on their failure rate, age, mileage and cost of repairs. The most reliable was Honda, with Suzuki second and Toyota in third place while Chevrolet and Mazda were joint fourth. Overall, the most reliable models were the Honda Jazz and Mitsubishi Lancer while the least reliable was the Audi RS6, which was also the most costly to fix, with an average repair bill of £1,003. Electrical faults were the most common across all cars, accounting for almost a quarter of visits to garages. Axle and suspension faults were also common, affecting 22% of cars. What Car? magazine compiled the table with the Warranty Direct website. ‘Reliability is always one of the key attributes buyers look for when considering a used car purchase, so manufacturers that consistently demonstrate durability will always do well with the consumer.’ The list price of Bentleys ranges from £136,250 to £224,700. La Marina Golf Society at Vistabella
The amazingly hot weather that the area has been experiencing this Summer has not diminished the enthusiasm of our members and, yet again, a large numbers of members met at Vistabella to play golf. Despite an early start, the sun blazed down but it was not contest against the dazzling golf played by many members and scores of 30 Stableford points and above were plentiful. Vistabella is not the favourite course for some members but nevertheless the high turnout mainly enjoyed the day. The waste areas and bunkers are plentiful on this course and there were many reports of the trials and tribulations of visiting them but the course is mellowing and the planting maturing and softening the landscape and, as time goes by, no doubt a few more players will come to appreciate it’s qualities more. Welcome shade and refreshments greeted members when we returned to La Marina Sports Centre for the prize giving.

We drove down to Roda Golf Resort on Thursday for the Fourth Presidents Trophy of the season. Again some very hot weather, were some members found it a bit too hot. Roda, having not played there for some time was in great condition, maybe a quick return is on the cards. The first of the season singles match play championship game was played, Jack Todd winning his game against Steve Thomas. We played full handicap stableford, four ntp’s and usual two’s pot. Results were pins. No 7 Chris Blown, No10 Wes Maginnis, the other two pins no return was recorded. The Two’s pot was won outright by Chris Blown, a good result after a two week roll over. Alan Madden won the day with an impressive 40 pt’s playing off 11. Ernie Wilson won the raffle. Thanks to James who sponsored the raffle, also thanks to his staff at Gogarty’s for their great hospitality. 38 In a hastily arranged fixture against Segunda B side Jumilla, CD Torrevieja grabbed a draw from the jaws of victory by conceding, once again, in the final minute of the game. Jumilla, champions of the Murcian
Tercera division last season and eventually winning promotion via the play-offs, were pushed to one side in the opening hour of Torrevieja’s fourth pre-season fixture. Pedreno named a strong side and, with Rafa Gomez injured, partnered Cesar just behind Juanfran with Brani moving up to his more familiar position
DRAW TOUGH TO TAKE FOR TORREVIEJA
on the wing. Burguillos slotted in alongside Jorge and Eddy dropped back into the centre of defence. Junafran, looking for his first goal in open play, had a great chance after nine minutes, capitalizing on a mistake by his marker. He snatched at the chance and blazed it high and wide. Brani was showing some of the fleet-footed dribbling that made him a fan favourite last season, cutting in from the left and shooting just wide of the near post. Moment later, Cesar went close forcing a good save from Seral in the Jumilla goal. Luis Carlos had been quiet up until this point, but that all changed after half-an-hour. Left-back Edu Mesas fed the ball to the diminutive winger, Luis Carlos cut on to his left foot and let fly with an unstoppable drive that went in off the right hand post. It was a stunning goal that saw Torrevieja lead 1-0 at half time.
Rubys Golf v's Claptons
Our latest venture took us to the evergreen and great course, Alenda, where we played a challenge match against Claptons. 26 players attended, with 3 four balls from each team competing for the challenge trophy, which was kindly donated by Bill Martin (a member of both society's) What a great day we had the competition was intense but friendly and Claptons just came out on top with only 3 points between the teams, so well done Claptons and we look forward to the return match in the future. Back at The Med Bar on El Raso we enjoyed a nice buffet and the presentation took place, Other winners on the day were, nearest the pins on the par 3's G Strowther B Martin (2) and B Abbott, nearest the pin in two was Bill Martin, nearest in three was G
Strowther. Runner up was G Strowther and although Claptons seem to have cleaned up, the winner on the day with a fine 38 points was our very own Michelle Evans.
Our next outing is at La Finca on the 7th of August any one wishing to join us for this or any other game please enter your name on the list at The Med Bar or email us at rubysgolf@yahoo.co.uk
Many substitutions were made at the break, the two more concerning being Juanfran and Martin being withdrawn having picked up knocks at the end of the first half. Lewis Allen replaced Juanfran up-front and was full of running, causing the Jumilla defenders all kinds of problems. He was unfortunate to get his first goal in a Torrevieja shirt. That honour was once again bestowed to Luis Carlos and he managed to find a way to trump his first effort. From the goal kick following Matheu, another promising performance off the bench from the Croat incidentally, heading over the bar from five yards, Luis Carlos controlled the ball, saw the goalkeeper off his line and chipped him from fully thirty-five yards. It was a goal that would have graced any match being played this weekend. This should have been the goal that made the game safe, but Torrevieja again showed a worrying trend of being unable to hold on to a lead. Sure, they are not helped by the preseason fixture substitution process
August 2015
where it seems obligatory for everyone to get a game, but to draw a game from 2-0 up with twenty minutes to go is disappointing. Edu Mesas clipped Ezekiel in the area and the penalty was awarded. Ezekiel picked himself up and fired the ball down the middle to halve the deficit. With just ninety seconds left on the clock, Jumilla broke down their right and Luz turned in a wonderful cross by Elias at the far post. If we analyse the first hour of this game then Torrevieja must be looking forward to the first league away at Ontinyent. Pre-season games are notoriously hard to judge, but in the time where both sides had what looked like a close fit to their first choice players on the field, CD Torrevieja more than competed and, at time, dominated.
The club is back in action this Friday night, playing against Hercules from Alicante. Kick off is at 8pm at El Vicente Garcia. chris@ clubdeportivotorrevieja.com
Café Uno Golf Society
Today, Thursday 30th July 27 members and guests from Café Uno Golf Society played at Font Del Llop golf course near Aspe. This course although in excellent condition, is not always the favourite of some of our higher handicappers. It is a long course with some very challenging holes, so it's not for the faint hearted golfer. We had a mixture of mid-summer weather today, comfortably warm, warm and humid, followed by very hot and humid, topped off with a cracking thunder storm and rain for about ten minutes. Then we got hot and dry again and longing to reach the eighteenth hole, where within sight was the nineteenth hole where cool pints of lager were awaiting. You need to keep your fluids up in this weather you know! Anyway, some good scores came in in our two categories and were as follows:Gold Category. 1st R.Rogers - 36pts.
2nd A.Rich - 31pts. Best front 9 - G.Benson - 17pts. Best back 9 - T.Rogers 16pts.c/b. Nearest the pin - T.Rogers. Nearest the pin in 2 - L.George. Silver Category. 1st N.Padmore - 36pts. 2nd B.Howie - 24pts.c/b. Best front 9 - C.Pepperday 14pts. Best back 9 - B.Wood - 13pts. Nearest the pin - B.Coey. Nearest the pin in 2 J.Chesworth. Winners of the 2's competition G.Benson and N.Padmore. Best guest was P.Hodson. Thanks to all for a good turn out today, and thanks to café Uno for the hospitality. Our next game is on Thursday 6th August at Vistabella 1st tee is 09:30. Just a reminder that membership fees are now due.

COSTA COBRAS RFC PLAY THE MURCIA BEACH 5’S
On Saturday we played in our third tournament in 5 weeks in San Juan playing against three of the top teams in the area, Alicante University, Albacete and Wondervra.
The team worked very hard with new players coming into the team and still many players still learning the game. In the first match we were up against the tournament organisers Alicante University and put up a strong fight against them, but in the end their experience told and came out on top.
so a good result for the club, so anybody who wants to come along and take part is more than welcome. If anybody knows of any town halls in the area of Guardamar to Cuidad Quesada or around there, that want to have a rugby club based there, we are looking for a base to train, hold rugby tournaments, matches, have touring teams come over and play in the league, please contact us on 692 767 242. All ages, gender and nationalities are welcome, from beginners to experienced players, the more the merrier, as we are based on the true traditional ethics of the sport. So come along and join the newest rugby club on the Costa Blanca. Also team bonding after training in the nearest bar for a drink and chat, just how rugby should be. Training still takes place on Monday and Wednesday from 20.0021.30 at Guardamar beach in front of the restaurants.
In the next one we were against Wondervra and put up a stronger defence and were slightly unlucky in a tight game and some quick thinking brought us a couple of tries, but again the experience told. This is all great for the Cobras as the players will only improve by playing against these more experienced teams. The players should be proud of what they have achieved and the only way is forward. This coming weekend we will be playing in the Murcia beach 5’s on 8 August, so if anybody would like to come and join in they are more than welcome to do so, the more the merrier, and join this up and coming new rugby club, Costa Cobras RFC The club is continuing to train on the beach throughout the summer months at Guardamar on Monday and Wednesday at 20.00. We have had a number of new junior players join in the training and become members of the club, from U10’s to U16’s,

FA Cup holders Arsenal won the Community Shield for a second season in a row as they beat Premier League champions Chelsea at Wembley. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored the winner with a powerful drive into the top corner with his weaker left foot. Ramires headed wide unmarked from Loic Remy’s cross as Chelsea failed to hit the target before the break. Eden Hazard skied a chance over the bar before Oscar’s free-kick was parried wide by Arsenal debutant Petr Cech. It was the first time the former Chelsea goalkeeper had been called into action after 68 minutes of play - and soon after he comfortably held on to Kurt Zouma’s header. Arsenal went close late on through Santi Cazorla and Kieran Gibbs in a match where both sides looked rusty a week before their Premier League opener. Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger finally had reason to celebrate against Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea having failed to win in any of his previous 13 attempts. In February 2014 the Chelsea boss called his opposite number a “specialist in failure”, and then in October the Gunners boss shoved his rival during a heated touchline quarrel. Oxlade-Chamberlain’s stunning strike was Arsenal’s first goal against Chelsea for 506 minutes, as the Gunners ended the Blues’ eight-match unbeaten run against them. Chelsea though can argue they are a week behind Arsenal in terms of preparation, with Italian side Fiorentina visiting Stamford Bridge in their final pre-season match in midweek. Man of the match - Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain The England international looked dangerous on the ball every time he was in possession, on the right of a three behind the lone striker. His goal was a stunning strike with his weaker foot. Post-match reaction Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, speaking to BT Sport: “We have suffered physically today and the pitch was not great. “But overall it’s good because in preseason we have been solid defensively. Pre-season has gone quite well. “We have no big injuries at the moment apart from Jack Wilshere who we lost yesterday.” Gunners midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, on BBC Radio 5 live: “It’s really nice to come to Wembley and win. We wanted to keep our good streak here going. We are delighted to win another trophy and for me personally, I’m happy I got the winner. “I don’t actually think I’ve lost at Wembley. Long may it continue. Today was a big game for us and we wanted to lay down a marker for our manager and our fans. I want to contribute more goals this season, it’s a target I’ve set for myself, and of course I’m happy to have got the goal today.” Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho on BT Sport: “We were the best team. We had more initiative, we controlled the game by having ball possession. Arsenal defended with 10 players, they put everybody in front of their own line and they had good organisation, congratulations to them. “They had a couple of chances in counter attacks but we had ours in organised football. They played their game tactically and found themselves one goal in front without any reason. “This season the Premier League title is very difficult but it is very difficult for everyone. The way other teams are spending they have big power in the hands while we are the same as last season. And with that we are going to try.”
