Spain opts to maintain terrorism threat level after Paris attacks
One Spaniard initially named as victim of the violence discovered alive in Strasbourg As Paris awoke in a state of shock over terrorist attacks that killed at least 132 people and injured over 350 on Friday night, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy spoke out on Saturday to express solidarity with France and to allay fears of potential attacks on Spanish soil. “We want to tell our French friends that we are by their side, that they can count on us,” said Rajoy in a morning address at La Moncloa prime ministerial palace. “We stand together with all the democrats of the world in the defense of our values.” All of Spain’s political parties suspended campaign events on Saturday as a show of mourning “There is no cause that can justify yesterday’s atrocity. We are not facing a war of

religions, but a battle between civilization and barbarity,” he added. “Today, we are all France.” Interior Minister Jorge Fernández Díaz said later Saturday that the government had decided to maintain the terrorism threat level at its current standing following a meeting of the Terrorist Threat Evaluation Committee. The committee, which comprises the country’s top-ranking police chiefs, for the moment ruled out raising the alert from level 4 to 5, the highest possible, which means there is an “imminent risk” of an attack. “We wanted to make an appeal for calm,” the minister said. Spain has been on a level 4 alert ever since June, when Islamist terrorism hit Tunisia, France and Kuwait. Before that, in January, the level had been raised to 3 following the attack in Paris that left 12 people dead at the satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo. The country had not been on a level 4 since the Madrid train bombings of March 11, 2004. On Saturday, Rajoy and Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría presided a special meeting of the National Security Council, the country’s top security and defense body, to discuss the matter. Rajoy also called for an urgent meeting of the adherents of an anti-jihadism pact, which was signed in February between his Popular Party (PP) and the main opposition Socialists to facilitate cooperation on counter-terrorism issues. One Spaniard found alive Four Spaniards were initially thought to have been killed in the attacks. However, that number has since been reduced after one of the victims named by French authorities, Alberto Pardo Touceda, 34, was discovered alive in Strasbourg. Touceda himself got in touch with the Spanish consulate in Paris to explain that his passport had been stolen in Bordeaux three years ago and perhaps one of those killed in the attack at the Bataclan concert hall, which was the scene of the worst carnage on Friday night, had been using his identity. There are also doubts surrounding another of the Spaniards reported dead by French officials. Relatives of Jorge Alonso de Celada, who was born in 1956, have told Spanish authorities in France that he sent them a message on Sunday morning saying that he was fine. The hotel where he was staying also said he had checked out at 11am on Sunday. Neither Spanish nor French authorities had been able to locate him on Sunday evening. The other Spanish victims named by French authorities are 29-year-old Juan Alberto González Garrido, who was originally from Granada and died in the Bataclan, and 27-year-old Michelli Gil Jáimez, a Spanish-Mexican who was killed in the attack on La Belle Equipe restaurant, according to Mexican officials. González Garrido had been attending the concert by American rock band Eagles of Death Metal at the Bataclan with his wife. The pair became separated during the attack: she is reported to have told family members that she saw him fall to the ground when the police entered the premises, but didn’t know if he had been hit by a bullet. She later saw him being put into an ambulance, but lost trace of him after that. Both engineers, the couple had been living in the French capital for the last two years. One other Spaniard is reported to be among the injured, according to the French embassy. Thirty-nine-year-old Iván García sustained minor injuries after attending the Bataclan concert. He had traveled to Paris from Madrid to visit three Spanish friends living there. The government has issued instructions to monitor the situation of all Spaniards currently in the French capital. Rajoy said he has already spoken with his French counterpart, Manuel Valls, and that he was planning to do the same with President François Hollande. The prime minister has also been in touch with all the leaders of opposition parties, including Socialist secretary general Pedro Sánchez, Ciudadanos head Albert Rivera and Podemos chief Pablo Iglesias. Air Berlin ceases domestic flights in Spain and mainland-Balearic connections
GERMAN carrier Air Berlin has scrapped all its domestic flight routes to and from Palma de Mallorca's Son Sant Joan terminal. This means the Balearic Islands' main airport will cease to be a strategic hub between Spain and the rest of Europe. Flights from the airports of Ibiza, Alicante, Sevilla and Valencia to Palma and vice versa will be axed before the end of January, and those connecting Mallorca with Málaga, Jerez (Cádiz province), Bilbao and also Faro in southern Portugal will go in March. Until now, as well as providing a reasonably-priced connection between the islands and the mainland, Air Berlin passengers travelling from the peninsula to Germany, Switzerland or Austria would have to
catch a connecting flight in Palma – and often, if they had several hours to spare or decided to book their connection for the next day, would spend time exploring the city. This incidental tourism will now be lost to Mallorca's capital, the regional government laments. Air Berlin's decision is part of the firm's 'strategic repositioning', forced by poor financial results this year. In the first nine months of 2015, the airline made a loss of €191 million, largely as a result of strong competition in the Spanish domestic flight market. The corporation will now plough its efforts into Berlin-Tegel and Düsseldorf airports, concentrating on international short-haul and long-distance routes.
Quijote shares €30 coin with King Felipe and Queen Letizia
A COMMEMORATIVE coin to mark the 400th anniversary of Don Quijote Part IV has been launched with the heads of King Felipe and Queen Letizia. A limited-edition €30 coin in solid sterling silver, the front face features the legendary fictitious 'knight' – in fact, an ordinary peasant addicted to chivalric novels who starts to believe he really lives in one – on his plain but trusty mare Rocinante and with his long-suffering, loyal and somewhat chubby sidekick Sancho Pancha kneeling beside him. A windmill stamped in an inset – the traditional landscape feature of the central region of Castilla-La Mancha and almost a character in its own right in Don Quijote – and the inscription 'El Quijote II, 1615-2015' feature on the same face. Queen Letizia and her husband, King Felipe VI – crowned last July after his father, Juan Carlos I abdicated – are on the reverse with their names. Although the coin has a face value of €30 and is legal tender, it will typically cost more than this as it is a one-off piece made of silver rather than the usual nickel.
Madrid completely car-free following anti-pollution parking ban
MADRID'S radical anti-pollution plan means the city streets resemble a Sunday afternoon rather than a working day, locals report – parking has been banned within the M-30 ringroad, or the central 'oval' of the city, except for residents and the disabled. Mixed feelings have been provoked by the sudden parking ban, which carries a €90 fine if ignored. Those who live in the city are delighted with the extra parking spaces suddenly available to them, and traffic jams have disappeared literally overnight. Getting from A to B in taxi or bus is much quicker and easier, and the whole city has a more relaxed feel about it, say workers, tourists and residents. But the downside has been that all public transport routes are now packed. The frequency of metro trains has not increased, and when they arrive, it is often impossible even to get on board, especially during rush hour. Those who have further to go to get to work say they are now spending more time on the train, the metro and then the bus than at home. Hospitals are an exception – 'parking police' have been told to 'be sensitive' and 'in no case' to fine or ban patients or their companions or visitors from parking. Other measures aimed at reducing air contamination – said to multiply safe levels recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO) – include advising the elderly not to exercise outside, and dropping the speed limit from 90 kilometres per hour to 70 on the M-30 network and on roads leading into the capital within the M-40 ringroad. thinkspain.com

Uber to start from scratch in Spain in bid to overturn car-sharing ban
The car-sharing app was banned in December 2014 but is hoping to make a comeback in Spain. The US based car-sharing service was banned in Spain in December 2014, but has not given up on the country, instead planning to change its business model in order to compete with other apps, which have cornered the market in its absence. Uber will now only work with drivers who carry a valid professional VTC license, as required by all professional drivers, according to Spanish daily El Mundo. The changes bring Uber in line with rival Spanish startup Cabify, which has always used fully licensed driv-
ers. "We made mistakes. We still believe in our business model but maybe Spain is not mature enough to accept private individuals carrying out these services," Carles Lloret, head of Uber in Spain, told El Mundo. Uber was suspended in Spain in December 2014 after taxi drivers brought a lawsuit against the company. It hit back by filing a complaint against its Spanish ban with the European Commission in April 2015. Uber has faced mounting opposition throughout Europe. 'Animal therapy' scheme launched in Costa Blanca town
ort A PIONEERING ‘animal therapy’ charity in a Costa Blanca town has launched its first session by bringing
trained dogs into an elderly Day Centre. Thanks to a grant from the La Caixa bank social fund, new association ASISCAN, based in Jávea (Alicante province) has started two weekly sessions at the centre, mainly treating users with dementia or who are physically disabled due to old age and spend a lot of time alone. Those who lead a lonely existence are finding comfort from the dogs’ presence, since stroking an animal creates peace and tranquillity – and spending time with the pets helps them to feel ‘useful’, ASISCAN explains. As well as the emotional side, the association says its trained dogs bring huge benefits on the cognitive front – elderly Day Centre users with Alzheimer’s or severe dementia

The first walk of the season for The Humanists of Murcia was in the Sierra Espuñas. The group went on the Eagle Walk, which took around 3 hours. The weather was good, a little warm when going up the slopes. Audrey came up trumps and took great care of the walkers, warning of any part that needed special care and again she did not lose anyone. She explained that the walk was closed to the public during the eagle-breeding season so that the birds were not disturbed. Jon was missed as he is recovering from a nasty fall whilst pruning his bougainvillea. His little, sometimes implausible (Surely not? ED), stories keep us entertained. There were 16 walkers and 2 very well behaved dogs on leads. Lunch was held at the La Parra Restaurante, El Berro and was very good. The December walk is on Saturday 12

The new venture is an Easy Rambling walk, which is on the level and lasting two hours. This will be on the second Saturday of each month; the next one will be from La Azohia. Donkey rescued in Valencia operation recovering well after surgery A donkey rescued from terrible conditions in Valencia last month has received surgery at the Alicante horse hospital after a veterinary inspection revealed one of his testicles had not dropped in the normal way. The 7-year-old donkey, named Braveheart, was operated on amid concerns the testicle could turn cancerous if it remained in his abdomen.“The operation was a complete success and Braveheart is recovering well,” rescue centre co-founder Sue Weeding said. Braveheart was rescued on October 23 from a property at Rotglà y Corberà, 150 kilometres north of Alicante, in a joint operation between the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre and the Valencia and Guadamar branches of Spain’s animal welfare unit, Seprona. “Braveheart was being kept in this grotty little area surrounded by chainlink fencing. He was standing on a concrete circle and couldn’t move off of it because he was surrounded by branches and metal,” Sue said. “He’s a bit malnourished but not terribly as he had only been at that place for two weeks.” However, a skeletal mare rescued at the same time – who was later found to be three months’ pregnant – was in much worse condition and sadly died two days after the rescue. The rescue centre has completed a veterinary report at the
request of Seprona officials, who are pushing to prosecute the Spanish owner. The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre relies entirely on donations to fund its important animal welfare work, including the feeding and care of the centre’s more than 90 horses, ponies and donkeys rescued from abuse, neglect and abandonment. Donations of cash or items for the centre’s network of eight charity shops across the Alicante province are gratefully welcomed. A pick-up service is available to collect large donated items such as furniture and each shop also offers a delivery service for large items purchased in-store. Anyone interested in making a donation, becoming a long-term sponsor, or volunteering at the rescue centre or in the charity shops can call Sue on 652 021 980. A young whale that appeared off the beach in Barcelona had to be put down by vets on Friday after becoming so weak because it had lost its mother. People taking a stroll along Barcelona’s beach had been stunned on Tuesday, when they spotted a whale just off the shore. The finback whale, which measured around 10 metres (33 feet) long, was spotted on Tuesday between
the beaches of Sant Miquel and Sant Sebastià. "It was a very emotional moment," Miquel Roigé, a surfer who spent around an hour paddling close to the whale on his board, told La Vanguardia. "I love marine life and I’ve seen dolphins before but never a whale,"
he added. The whale made his appearance at around 4pm on Tuesday. It is the first time an animal of that size has reached a Catalan port, confirmed sources from Catalonia’s Marine Animal Rescue Network. Experts from the network were deployed to the scene, where they witnessed the whale swimming in the port, close to the tourist cruise ship terminal. The animal had spent the night close to a freight terminal in the port. Towards midday, they had managed to coax the whale towards the southern exit of the port, where he swam away past the beach. Surfer Miquel Roigé, who runs the paddle centre Moloka’i SUP, admitted the experience "great" but also "sad, because the calf was completely alone, outside its habitat". Vets had to put down the whale on Friday morning because of its weak state of health. Open Day for Fiddler Hot on the heels of their successful pantomime “Dick Whittington” STUDIO32 is holding an Open Day for their summer 2016 musical “Fiddler On The Roof”. This will be held at Casa Ventura, San Luis on Wednesday November 18th at 4pm. Anyone is welcome to come along and find out about the show and about the STUDIO32 musical theatre company. We will be providing audition pieces and character guidelines, and people will be able to ask any questions about the show. We will also be recruiting new members, in particular we are keen to hear from men young and not so young who are interested in leading roles and chorus. “Fiddler On The Roof” is a wonderful musical, full of poignant drama, humour, and emotion. It is probably most well-
known for the song “If I Were A Rich Man” sung by the leading man Tevye, played for many years on the London stage by Topol. The show will be performed at the Cardenal Belluga Theatre, San Fulgencio from Wednesday 1st June to Saturday 4th June 2016. Using light microscopy, a team of researchers led by Javier Fernández-Lozano from the University of Salamanca, followed a unicellular algae's complete life cycle. During several life stages, the algae either move using their whip-like structure called a flagella or form lumps or cysts, which usually happens in harsh conditions. This stressful state leads to the production of a red pigment called astaxanthin, causing them to turn red. In sunlight, the red pigment becomes even more vibrant. The organism that caused the stressful event had been discovered but scientists still cannot determine where it came from. Haematococcus pluvialis had only been present in water bodies along the European Atlantic coast and North America. Its appearance in Spain is its first documented appearance in a periMediterranean climate such as the one in Zamora. "What is interesting is that we have confirmed that this species does not
appear in Sanabria Lake or in the reservoirs surrounding the village of Ayoó de Vidriales so they must be coming from some other place," said study lead author Fernández-Lozano. Analyzing meteorological data revealed a link to the prevalence of westerly winds which could have affected Iberian Peninsula's north-western area in the autumn of 2014 when another blood-rain incident was recorded. The researchers were not able to pinpoint the exact origin site but suggested that they could have originated from North America. Haematococcus pluvialis is used in the pharmaceutical industry as an antioxidant. In the fish farming industry, the microalgae are used as food for trout and salmon which gives the fish a more vibrant red color. Flamingos' pinkish hue can also be traced to food sources laced with the microalgae. BEM Investiture for Clevedon Resident
On Friday 6th November 2015 a BEM Investiture Ceremony was held in Spain for Clevedon Resident Chris Sumter. The British Ambassador to Spain, Mr. Simon J Manley, GMG presided over the ceremony in Alicante Spain. The BEM was awarded to Chris in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in June, and the citation is for meritorious civil service to the English speaking community in Spain. Chris had only arrived back in the UK to live in Clevedon after twenty years living and working abroad a few weeks before she received the phone call from Madrid asking her if she would be willing to accept the honour. Till that phone call Chris had no idea she was even being considered for any kind of award, so it was a huge surprise to her and for a short while she was completely taken aback. In fact Chris could not talk on the phone when she took the first call as she was parking the car, and asked the caller, who said he was the British Ambassador to Spain to call back in ten minutes. At that point Chris was convinced it was one of those scam calls and never expected a return call. Her shock was visible when she realised it was genuine and she was actually being honoured by the Queen for her services. When she returned to join her husband, Lubbertus, she told him that it was the Spanish Ambassador on the phone, but she had been sworn to secrecy so she couldn’t tell him what it was about. Eventually she relented and did tell him, swearing him to
secrecy as well. Over those twenty years abroad Chris worked as a therapist and counselor first in Singapore, then in Thailand. In 2004 she was part of the team helping and supporting survivors of the Boxing Day Tsunami there. In 2008 Chris “retired” to live in Spain with her husband, but rapidly found herself involved in the recently formed Samaritans in Spain. By 2010 she had become their President, moving the organisation forward and overseeing its expansion to a full 24/7 phone service and expanding out to Madrid. Throughout this time she was still offering help and support to a wide range of individuals. Chris sees this award not just as recognition for all the work she has done over the years, but also a recognition of the hard work of all those involved in the Samaritans, both in Spain, the UK and around the world, and as recognition of all those carers all over the world who offer so much to others. Chris “finally retired” when she moved to Clevedon, but as all those who know her will attest, we probably haven’t seen the last of her helping others.

But aside from making it tough to cut a straight line with a pair of scissors designed for righties, being a southpaw can also have some subtle effects on our physical and mental health. Researchers have unveiled a radical new 'ultrapower' laser that can heat materials to temperatures hotter than the centre of the Sun in only 20 quadrillionths of a second. The technique, developed by theoretical physicists from Imperial College London, could heat certain materials to ten million degrees in much less than a million millionth of a second. They say it could lead to a breakthrough in thermonuclear fusion energy, where scientists seek to replicate the Sun's ability to produce clean energy. The heating would be about 100 times faster than rates currently seen in fusion experiments using the world's most energetic laser system at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California. 'It's a completely unexpected result,' said the paper's lead author, Dr Arthur Turrell. 'This method puts energy straight into the ions.' When lasers are used to heat most materials, the energy from the laser first heats up the electrons in the target. These in turn heat up the ions, making the process slower than targeting the ions directly. The Imperial team discovered that when a high-intensity laser is fired at a certain type of material, it will create an electrostatic shockwave that can heat ions directly. Normally, laser-induced electrostatic shockwaves push ions ahead of them, causing them to accelerate away from the shockwave but not heat up. However, using sophisticated supercomputer modelling, the team discovered that if a material contains special combinations of ions, they will be accelerated by the shockwave at different
speeds. This causes friction, which in turn causes them to rapidly heat. They found that the effect would be strongest in solids with two ion types, such as plastics. 'The two types of ions act like matches and a box; you need both,' explained study coauthor Dr Mark Sherlock from the Department of Physics at Imperial. 'A bunch of matches will never light on their own - you need the friction caused by striking them against the box.' 'That the actual material used as a target mattered so much was a surprise in itself,' added study co-author Professor Steven Rose. 'In materials with only one ion type, the effect completely disappears.' The heating is so fast in part because the material targeted is so dense. The ions are squeezed together to almost ten times the usual density of a solid material as the electrostatic shockwave passes, causing the frictional effect to be much stronger than it would be in a less-dense material, such as a gas. The technique, if proven experimentally, could be the fastest heating rate ever demonstrated in a lab for a significant number of particles. 'Faster temperature changes happen when atoms smash together in accelerators like the Large Hadron Collider, but these collisions are between single pairs of particles,' said Dr Turrell. 'In contrast the proposed technique could be explored at many laser facilities around the world, and would heat material at solid density.' Doñana National Park Nearly a fifth of Andalucia is protected, the largest proportion of an autonomous region in Spain, reflecting the unspoilt nature of its countryside and the high ecological importance of its territory. The environment department, the Consejería de Medio Ambiente, of the regional Andalucian government is in charge of overseeing the protected areas and has an office in each provincial capital which you can contact about obtaining permits to visit areas with restricted access or for free camping. Alternatively, national and natural parks also have a local headquarters, called the Oficina del Parque, based in the protected area that can also give advice.
NATIONAL PARKS
These are locations of outstanding importance for their wildlife and geology, with ecosystems that have been little altered by human activity. They have the highest degree of protection, sometimes with restricted access to certain areas within them. There are two national parks in Andalucia: Doñana and Sierra Nevada. Access to the practically all of the Doñana National Park is strictly by guided tour only; trips run from the main visitors’ centre in El Acebuche and the tourist office in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Cadiz province. However, between El Rocío and Villamanrique de la Condesa there is a drovers’ track (vía pecuaria) called the Raya Real, which gives access to the northern part of the park by non-motorised transport (horses, bicycles or on foot) only. The entire Sierra Nevada National Park is open to the public, but many routes are for those on foot or bicycle only. Roads and tracks closed off by a chain or other barrier must only be used by hikers or cyclists and not motor vehicles. Spain Resale House Prices Fell by -0.4% in October
The average price of second hand homes in Spain stood at 1,640 €/m2 in October, registering a month-on-month decline of -0.4%, according to data from property portal, fotocasa. Quarter-on-quarter resale prices fell by -0.2% in October, while year-on-year prices increased by 0.1%. Since the record values recorded in April 2007, of 2,952 €/m2, the average price of second hand homes in Spain have accumulated a decline of -44.5%. In fact, since the maximum prices registered eight years ago, 10 of Spain’s regions have recorded declines in excess of -40%, with La Rioja registering the greatest decline in resale prices (-54.2%), followed by: Aragón (-51.8%); Navarra (-51.5%); Castilla-La Mancha (-50.9%); Murcia (-48.2%); Valencia (-47.1%); Catalonia (-46.2%); Asturias (-44.6%), and Madrid (-43.8%). Month-on-month, five regions recorded increases in second hand housing prices in October, the greatest being those registered in Castilla y León (+0.7%), Cantabria (+0.5%), Galicia (+0.3%) and Castilla-La Mancha (+0.1%). In contrast, the greatest declines registered in the month were in the regions of Aragón (-1.1%), Andalucía and the Basque Country (both with -0.6%) and the Balearic Islands (-0.5%). With an average price of 2,801 €/m2, the Basque Country is still the most expensive region of Spain, followed by Madrid (2,232 €/ m2) and Catalonia (2,080 €/m2), while the regions with the most economical resale housing prices are Castilla-La Mancha (1,086 €/ m2), Extremadura (1,136 €/m2) and Murcia (1,190 €/m2). Some 16 provinces recorded price rises in monthly terms, with increases ranging from 1.1% in Pontevedra to 0.1% in Asturias. In contrast, prices fell in 33 provinces, with the greatest declines being recorded in Cáceres (-2.7%), Almeria (-2.1%), Lleida (-1.7%) and Cuenca (-1.4%), while the only province where prices remained unchanged in October was Toledo (956 €/m2). Guipúzcoa was the most expensive province in October (3,095 €/ m2), followed by Vizcaya (2,800 €/m2), while the cheapest provinces for resale housing were Toledo and Ciudad Real, with average prices of 956 €/m2 and 1,002 €/m2, respectively. kyero.com

Number of Completed New Homes Down 5.7%
According to recent data published by the Ministry of Development, between January and August of this year the construction of 29,277 new homes were completed in Spain, representing a decline of 5.7% compared with the same period of the previous year, when a total of 31,062 homes were completed. Thus, so far in 2015, the data for the number of new homes completed in Spain remains negative, following a seventh consecutive year of declines recorded in 2014. Of the total number of homes completed up until August, 99% (28,993) related to private developers’ projects and 1% (284) to public administrations projects. Compared to a year earlier, the construction of housing by private developers fell by 6%, while public administrations projects increased by 34.6%.
Of the private developer projects, some 16,666 corresponded to corporations, with a year-on-year decline of 0.4%; 9,905 related to individuals and detatched communities of owners (+0.5%), and 1,177 cortijo related to cooperatives (+55.7%). The David Cameron Government announced the sale of a portfolio or mortgages valued at 13 billion pounds (some 18.4 billion €) to the investment fund Cerberus which at the same time passed to the Catalan bank their part of the shares. Conflict
The battle lines are drawn, the barricades built. Alqueria holds its breath as the belligerents from each barrio plot and scheme. The rivalry between the two sections of Alquerian society has climbed that extra rung on the ladder of escalation from undeclared warfare to ‘de facto’ hostilities. The makeshift barricades of cobblestones and broken furniture, freshly broken for the purpose, kept the two factions apart as plans were laid by the belligerents to gain the upper hand. Nocturnal sorties became the operational choice with ‘commando’ groups from each barrio raiding the opposition by moonlight. Groups of black clad individuals faces obscured with burntcork could be seen creeping around the Pueblo after dark. Loco Paco took them to be friends of his imaginary five foot rodent friend ‘Bert’ and tried to lure them into his front room with large pieces of Manchego. The clandestine antagonists declined the invitation but were grateful for the cheese. The Hill People, led by Manuela always came out on top during these altercations. Both sides employed sneaky and underhand methods during hostilities but the Hill People’s sneakiness was always that bit more sneaky, better thought out and implemented with military precision worthy of Montgomery himself. To try and redress the balance the incursions by the Newcomers became increasingly desperate. The daubing of slogans on the walls of the Bar La Casa Devante, an old favourite of the Newcomers soon ended with the breaking of the bar’s windows. One
enterprising individual who had served in the Spanish forces powered CS gas tablets before putting them in the ash-trays. He reward came when the early evening drinkers evacuated the bar with eyes and noses streaming in an undignified but nevertheless p l e a s i n g spectacle.
Manuela was indignant and swore revenge. A council of war was summoned and plans duly laid for an audacious and hopefully ultimate raid on the enemy. The Alquerian drainage system suffers from the same problems as those associated with certain Egyptian port towns. A road tanker used to remove backed-up effluent is the busiest vehicle in the Village and always has a full cargo of the disgusting human residue. It was a simple matter to highjack the vehicle, after all who in their right mind would want to be within fifty metres of the thing. Reversing the pump’s action our group of giggling pseudo terrorists pumped the entire contents into the bar of La Golondrina Verde, the Newcomer’s watering hole. Manuela and her confederates were in high glee. A masterly stroke rendering the Bar uninhabitable and attracting a large flock of noisy seagulls. That night the Newcomer’s took speedy and terrible revenge. Manuela disappeared, kidnapped and spirited from Alqueria. Alqueria waits.
The back view of our house is graced by the presence of a pomegranate tree. When we arrived here in Spain and decided against perceived wisdom and common sense to create a garden in this rocky and wind-lashed area known as Limaria it was among the first batch of purchases we made. In a desperate bid to soften the gauntness of the grey shale area around our house, which would in time be optimistically called ‘The Garden’ we rushed in where angels would fear to tread. We betook ourselves to Organica with a reasonable knowledge of English gardening, only to discover that anything we might have learnt over the years tending the fertile and well-manured soil of Devon was of no use whatsoever in the dessicated desert in which we now lived. We traipsed the aisles of plants and surveyed the rows of pots, attended assiduously by Encarna, whose English was as minimal as our Spanish. It quickly became obvious that pointing at a plant and asking what it was was not going to add much to the total of our knowledge, and asking such details as the plant’s preferences or eventual size and shape was as mysterious as next week’s Lottery numbers. Much to our amazement, we ended up with all the plants that we had ordered. However, what they were, or what they would become, should they grow, was still a mystery. We busily planted all our little infants in the places where we hoped that they would be happy. The pomegranate tree courageously

With a place for the Blackpool show up for grabs next week nobody was wanting to be eliminated. I have to say that this year is going to extremely tough to call. There could be up to 5 or 6 fighting for a place in the final with no front runner yet apparent despite what appeared to be early runners. Opening this weeks show were Anita Rani and Gleb and their Quickstep. She is still my dark horse and performed her quickstep with an excellent frame and great body contact throughout somewhat complex choreography. Occasionally Anita missed pointing her toes and her ankles were sickled (turned inwards) but apart from this very well danced. I awarded her a 9 and the judges 32. Next out were Jay McGuinness and Aliona and a Foxtrot. I loved Jay in the earlier rounds but I have to say I am left a little disappointed each week. Despite his excellent strong male lead and great story telling he is lacking once in ballroom hold and I can only put it down to the training from his partner. He could be absolutely fantastic but for some reason he just isn’t delivering. Let’s hope he can find it over the next few weeks or he could find himself in trouble when he should actually have an automatic place in the final. I gave him 9 and the judges a poor 30. Next to dance were Jamelia and Tristan with a Samba. Despite there being great Samba content here I don’t think I saw Jamelia close her feet once, and despite good rhythm she displayed awful twine toed feet and very poor arm movement. I gave her 5 and the judges 26. Helen George and Aljaz and their Tango

were next to perform. Super staccatto action throughout the dance but for my liking there was just a bit too much of the dance out of hold and she was fighting staying down in her knees when in hold. That said a super performance with a 9 from myself and 34 from the judges. Katie Derham and Anton followed with a Rumba. Katie has beautiful feet and legs but didn’t use them correctly hence a lack of hip action. She was trying to be sexy but for me is just didn’t work and at times her timing was suspect. I gave her 7 and the judges a very generous 31 (better than Jay I don’t think so!) Next out were Kellie Bright and Kevin with a Samba and a hip hop vibe! I hated the music but I have to say the I did enjoy this performance. It shouldn’t have worked but for some reason it did. It was very slow so made the Samba choreography very easy to get right but Kellie did a great job and I gave her 9 with the judges 33. Peter Andre and Janette then danced a Viennese Waltz. Peter always portrays a great story and his frame is improving but he needs to keep his head left. This was very well danced and I gave him 8 and the judges 34. Georgia May Foot and Giovanni

With the arrival of Spring its winter bareness transformed into a profundity of small light green leaves, among which in due course an uncountable multitude of scarlet blossoms nestled. It is indeed a thing of beauty - were it a person it would be a lyric tenor, and sing with Il Divo. A considerable number of the flowers transformed into pomegranates, which filled and ripened to red russet globes of such magnificence that even José announced himself jealous of their beauty. But the majority of them are rotten inside. Why? I have raised them with tender affection, admired them and praised them on a daily basis, yet they have they repaid me so cruelly. Their beauty is indeed only skin deep, and I am devastated by their ingratitude!

A traditional Charleston packed with high energy swivels kicks flicks and tricks absolutely superb and it got my 10 and the judges top slot with 39. Closing this weeks show was public favourite and the weakest link now by a long way Jeremy Vine and Karen with their Quickstep. Sorry Jeremy you are now so far behind in this competition that good dancers will have to leave to allow you to continue. As much as he enjoys his performance it is time to go. He gained 4 from me and bottom spot on 21 from the judges. The bottom 2 were Jeremy and Jamelia with Jeremy leaving the show after the dance off and judges unanimous vote. Next week we are at the home of Ballroom Dancing at the beautiful Tower Ballroom in Blackpool. Being a much bigger floor than the studio, it normally sorts the men out from the boys. I can’t wait to see who can step up to the mark. In the meantime come and join one of our classes and the ‘strictly’ gossip where singles are always made very welcome, until next week Keep Dancing! Pork and Fennel Ragout Grind the fennel seeds with 1 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper in a spice grinder or chop with a knife. Transfer to a medium bowl; mix with the lemon juice and pork. Add the flour and toss to coat. In another bowl, mix the lemon zest with 2 tablespoons parsley. Heat a deep skillet or pot over high heat and add the olive oil. Brown the pork in batches, 1 minute per side; transfer to a plate. Add the shallots, fennel bulb, the remaining 3 tablespoons parsley, and salt

Peach-Mustard Pork Chops Prepare the pork: Combine the brown sugar, paprika, coriander, onion powder, garlic powder, mustard powder, 1 tablespoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper in a large baking dish. Pierce both sides of the pork chops with a paring knife (about 12 times per side). Add the pork chops to the dish, turning to coat with the spice rub. Cover and refrigerate at least 4 hours or overnight. Make the sauce: Combine the vinegar, preserves, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, mustard powder, red pepper flakes and 3/4 teaspoon salt in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium low and simmer, whisking occasionally, until the sauce thickens slightly, about 8 minutes; let cool completely. Transfer 1/4 cup of the sauce to a separate bowl for basting. Set aside
the remaining sauce for serving. Remove the pork from the refrigerator about 30 minutes before grilling. Preheat a grill to medium and lightly brush the grates with vegetable oil. Transfer the pork chops to the grill, cover and cook until lightly marked, about 4 minutes. Flip the pork chops and baste with the sauce; cover and cook 3 more minutes. Uncover and continue cooking, flipping and basting the pork chops every 2 minutes, until they are golden and well marked, about 8 more minutes. Transfer to a cutting board and let rest 5 minutes. Meanwhile, brush the peaches lightly with vegetable oil and place cut-side down on the grill. Cover and grill until marked, 1 to 2 minutes per side. Serve the pork chops with the grilled peaches and the reserved sauce.
Smothered Pork Chops Put the flour in a shallow platter and add the onion powder, garlic powder, cayenne, salt, and pepper; mix with a fork to distribute evenly. Pat the pork chops dry with paper towels to remove any moisture and then dredge them in the seasoned flour; shaking off the excess. Heat a large saute pan or cast iron skillet over medium heat and coat with the oil. When the oil is nice and hot, lay the pork chops in the pan in a single layer and fry for 3 minutes on each side until golden brown. Remove the pork chops from the
pan and add a little sprinkle of seasoned flour to the pan drippings. Mix the flour into the fat to dissolve and then pour in the chicken broth in. Let the liquid cook down for 5 minutes to reduce and thicken slightly. Stir in the buttermilk to make a creamy gravy and return the pork chops to the pan, covering them with the sauce. Simmer for 5 minutes until the pork is cooked through. Season with salt and pepper and garnish with chopped parsley before serving.
Cheese-Stuffed Pork Chops Dissolve 70g salt and the sugar in 700ml warm water in a large bowl. Insert a paring knife into the curved side of each pork chop to make a deep pocket, about 2 inches wide. Soak the chops in the brine, about 5 minutes. Meanwhile, finely chop the escarole and garlic. Toss with 2 tablespoons olive oil, and salt and pepper to taste. Remove the chops from the brine and pat dry. Fold each cheese slice and tuck into the pocket of a pork chop, then stuff with the escarole mixture. Brush the pork
with olive oil, sprinkle with the sage and season with salt and pepper. Heat the remaining 2 tablespoons olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the pork in batches, turning once, until golden brown, 3 to 4 minutes. Transfer to a plate. Add the beans and 75ml water to the skillet, scraping up any browned bits; season with salt and pepper. Return the pork to the skillet, cover and cook over medium heat until no longer pink, 5 to 7 more minutes. Serve the pork with the beans.
Mojo Pork Chops with Plantains Cut a 2-inch strip of zest from both the orange and grapefruit; place in a glass bowl. Squeeze 3 tablespoons juice from each fruit into the bowl (set the fruit aside). Whisk in 3 tablespoons olive oil, 2 tablespoons vinegar, 1 tablespoon oregano, the cumin seeds, and salt and pepper to taste. Poke the pork chops with a fork, then add them to the marinade, turning to coat. Set aside for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, make the mojo sauce: Squeeze 1 tablespoon each orange and grapefruit juice into another bowl; whisk in the remaining 1 tablespoon vinegar, 5 tablespoons olive oil, 1 tablespoon oregano, garlic and parsley. Season with
1/2 teaspoon salt, and pepper to taste. Boil the plantains in a saucepan of salted water, covered, until tender, about 15 minutes. Drain, reserving about 60ml cooking liquid. Smash the plantains with a potato masher, drizzling with olive oil and some of the cooking liquid. Season with salt and pepper; keep warm. Heat 2 medium skillets over medium high heat. Remove the pork from the marinade; pat dry. Brush the chops lightly with some of the mojo sauce; sear until golden and slightly crisp on one side, about 5 minutes. Turn and cook about 3 more minutes. Divide the pork and plantains among plates and drizzle with more mojo sauce

Remembrance Day concert
Remembrance Day concert wows sell-out audience Last Sunday a huge concert was held in the Centro Ecumenico church, La Zenia. It was mounted by two of the leading choirs on the Costa, the Orihuela Costa Male Voice Choir and the chamber choir 'In Harmony', both trained and conducted by Nigel Hopkins. The event was held in support of the Royal British Legion (ORIHUELA Costa branch) and the church building fund, both of whom received at least €1.000 each from the proceeds of the concert. Both choirs were on top form, both singing an entire new repertoire. In Harmony started off the evening with the Elizabethan Serenade and Dream A Dream (to the tune of Faure's Pavane). There followed a medley of songs from Les Miserables sung by the Male Voice Choir, during which the guest
soloist Janelle Gaskell gave a superb rendition of On My Own, and choir soloist Graham Cooke delighted with Stars. The evening continued in great style to very generous applause from a clearly delighted packed audience. Of particular note was the launching of the professional career of 18 year old singing sensation, Verity Hall, who thrilled the enthralled audience with both Vilia (from the Merry Widow) and later the operatic showstopper O Mio Babbino Caro (O My Beloved Father). This talented singer, who is under the personal tutelage of Nigel Hopkins, showed that she has a great future in the profession in the years to come. Could the evening get any better? Nigel Hopkins kept his secret weapon till near the end of the concert when he introduced the soprano Mary Beer
who sang, along with the ladies of In Harmony, the enigmatic Nun's Chorus from Casanova by Johann Strauss. Mary soared above the chorus with the incredible descant made so famous by the worldfamous soprano Joan Sutherland. One appreciative audience member declared afterwards that she 'thought the gates of heaven had opened' upon hearing this piece. Not only did Nigel conduct and compere the whole performance, but he also sang two beautiful songs, I Believe and Bless This House, to tumultuous applause. The concert ended with both choirs singing Nigel's arrangement of Let There Be Peace On Earth which brought the entire audience to their feet in a lengthy standing ovation. All in all this concert must rate as probably the best evening's entertainment heard on the whole Costa for many a long year. In Harmony are now rehearsing for their annual Christmas Concert in La Zenia church (off the island) on Sunday 13th December. Tickets are now on sale at La Ponderosa gift shop, C.C. La Zenia

On the 5th October we held our AGM and members were voted on to the Committee as follows: Ken D'Angelo - Chairman, Sam Woods - Vice Chairman, Anita Girvan - Treasurer, Linda Crook - Community Secretary, the minutes are viewable on the website. It is with regret that we were informed on the 6th November Keith Wilcock passed away, Keith was one of our gallant pothole volunteers, he will be sadly missed by the team, and the community. Our thoughts go out to Chris and their family at this time. Our dedicated band of potholers have been out and about (usually on a Thursday) doing minor repairs to the roads around D sector (using a fair amount of the group funds); we will be keeping you informed on the community web site with further information. Over a period of time we have installed trenches to divert water brining down mud on to the roads, unfortunately we will have to take a further look at these trenches as in places they are not working as we expected (work in progress) Due to the limited number of volunteers, the gardening te am is going to concentrate on maintenance of existing gardens, roundabouts, Jubilee Garden and the dual carriageway. These areas all need weeding and general tidying up. If anyone would like to be involved in this work, PLEASE check our community website or community Facebook page, details will be posted where the work will be carried out each week. We still desperately need volunteers and would be grateful for any help you can afford us. We are changing the day of working from Fridays to Wednesdays in the hope that it will suit more people. Over the summer period, unfortunately we have lost some plants due to heat, we did try our best with
the watering but didn't succeed with keeping them alive, also at the top of D25 there were a number of dead conifers, these have now been cut down and removed. Signs have been purchased by the group (requested by membership); one sign has been placed on the golf club roundabout giving directions to C and D sectors and a sign locating the D Sector map for new arrivals and contractors. More signs have had to be printed and located around the community area for the few dog walkers that do not clear up their dogs mess. We are looking at starting competition shortly for our members to use the D30 Pétanque court and have a bit of fun, there is a great possibility we can get a league up and running with other groups. Information will be posted on the community web site. Many thanks to Mercers, who have sponsored 20 Hi Vis waist coats for our volunteer teams. Our Quiz Night, held on the 21st October was very successful and all the monies raised were donated to FAST. As the night was so successful we have been asked to organise another in the spring (watch this space). The D Community Christmas Dinner Dance is taking place at Mariano's Restaurant on the 12th December. Please check web site or contact Laurie on 605184170 to see if there are any still available. Work is still on-going and without the generosity of funding from our residents and visitors we could not do this work, and we still need volunteers to keep our little piece of Spain a good place to be. Neither of them had expected the icon to be so breathtaking.” I loved this Archer classic and felt that I was following the trials and tribulations of 007 instead of Captain Adam Scott. The story begins interestingly with the discovery that the painting of St. George and the Dragon, displayed in the Winter Palace, Leningrad for more than 50 years under heavy guard, is a fake. The treasures inside the palace have been carbon-dated and it is now known that this painting in question was done 500 years after Rublev’s original. Nicholas IInd, The Tsar’s traditional silver crown was not attached to the back of the frame. It was believed that the Tsar had secreted something valuable inside the icon, something so valuable that it would have guaranteed security for himself and his family. But it was hidden away for decades, undiscovered until 1966. The protagonist, Adam Scott has resigned his army commission after an exemplary career in distinguishing himself. He was awarded the Sword of Honour and was hopeful to join the Foreign Office. Action begins in Appleshaw, U.K. with the reading of his father’s will. A small, insignificant legacy is bequeathed to his mother, sister and Adam himself, expected but the biggest and strangest surprise comes with an envelope stipulating that should he decide to open the envelope it must be on the condition that he will never divulge its contents to any living person. How mysterious. We discover that his father, Gerald had allegedly been a traitor. In his last posting he had responsibility for a number of senior ranking Nazis awaiting trial for war crimes: Hess, Doenitz, Speer and Goering. The night before Goering’s execution the Nazi officer had requested a private meeting with Gerald where he handed him an envelope hoping that this would compensate him for being held responsible for future events such as treachery. He was told it was a masterpiece and not to underestimate its value. Sadly, Gerald didn’t open or destroy the envelope so he didn’t benefit from Goering’s gift. The Nazi died from cyanide poisoning immediately after this private meeting and naturally, Gerald was held responsible for the suicide and dishonoured. Adam inherited the apparent sins of the father, hence his resignation from the army. Out of curiosity and with a sense of honour Adam opens the envelope

Audi Q7 e-tron (2016) plug-in hybrid
And then there were two. The Q7 e-tron is Audi’s second plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) – and in terms of environmental impact it’s not difficult to imagine the Q7 needing more of this kind of assistance than the existing A3 e-tron. Audi’s premier SUV is not a small vehicle. In fact, it’s one of the UK market’s largest 4x4s. Which means adding an electric motor and a massive battery pack might make a bit of sense, even if it also cancels out the final row of seats. So why should I go for the Audi Q7 e-tron over the remaining three? Even with all the weight Audi’s managed to take out of the second-generation Q7 platform, the e-tron can’t match the nimble, fleet-footed feel of the BMW – nor the raw performance of the (noisy) twin-charged Volvo. At nearly 2.5-tonnes,
including 202kg of electronics and batteries hanging out over the back axle, it’s impressive just how safe and assured it actually is, thundering along a mountain road on 20-inch wheels and the optional air suspension. But not even 368bhp, 516lb ft and five-link aluminium suspension can really make the Audi exciting to drive. Quick enough, yes. Exciting, no. The Q7 gets its own back when it comes to electric range and overall refinement. Audi claims up to 56km (34.8 miles) of electric-only running – and without putting in any particular effort we were able to travel very nearly that distance without troubling the internal combustion engine. It’ll happily stay an EV at motorway speeds, too. When it does kick in, the six-pot is not only smooth but surprisingly sonorous, helped by the world-first application of active engine mounts on a diesel. It’s a much more cultured experience than the gruff Mercedes, which also can’t match the Audi’s interior quality. Verdict The Q7 e-tron is a convincing application of current plugin hybrid technology, very refined, sleek inside and tidy to drive. But at an expected price of £65,000 – some £12,000 more than the next most expensive Q7 – you’ve got to really want the tech and be in a position to make best use of the electric range in order to seriously consider one as a private buyer. You also have to understand that ‘current’ technology means even a rapid charger needs 2.5 hours to fully replenish the battery, while a domestic supply demands 8 hours, and the discipline to plug it in every night. Mileage Clocking Gang Arrested
Officers from the Guardia Civil in Guadalajara have dismantled a gang of criminals who would manipulate the recorded mileage of vehicles in order to increase their apparent value before selling them. The gang would obtain vehicles through leasing companies created for the sole purpose of the deception and after purchasing the vehicles they would then manipulate the mileage and documentation to increase the market value, then sell them through internet portals where the vehicle history was less likely to be checked. The final transaction was usually completed in car parks and shopping centres, and so the victims had no record of
the real location or address of the sellers. The gang was based in the Guadalajara and Madrid areas, but sold the vehicles across the country, conning innocent buyers into buying overpriced and potentially dangerous vehicles. In total, the investigators have identified more than 200 victims of the scam, although they believe that more victims will be revealed as the complex investigation continues. So far, victims of these scams have been located in the provinces of Guadalajara, Toledo, Ávila, Madrid, Cáceres, Castellón, Tarragona, Tenerife, Palma de Mallorca, Bizkaia, Málaga, Jaén and Almería. In total, six people have been arrested so far, five men and a woman, all aged between 33 and 42, all suspected of the crimes of fraud, forgery and conspiracy. One arrestee has already entered prison having been wanted in connection with other offences. An additional eight people are also under investigation. During the raids, the officers recovered documentation, numerous car keys, mobile phones, cash, computer equipment and business stamps for six companies. New Electronic ITV Certificates Enter Into Use
From last week, new vehicles registered in Spain will have a new, electronic version of the technical characteristics document, rather than the traditional paper or card version. The new tarjeta electrónica de características técnicas (eITV) will automatically be issued with the vehicle for all newly registered cars, vans and trucks from Wednesday 11th November, 2015. All previously registered vehicle will continue to use the paper and card documentation. The DGT has already implemented a system whereas manufacturers, importers and vehicle sales companies can submit the registration information by electronic means, which can be accessed and checked by officials. Once checked and validated, the DGT will store the information in an electronic register, the Registro de Vehículos Prematriculados, which in turn issues the vehicle identification number, the Número de Identificación del Vehículo (NIVE), which then becomes the unique identifier for that vehicle. The DGT will then assign the registration number of the vehicle and issue the Tarjeta de Inspección Técnica, or technical inspection card, in electronic form only, which can be accessed on-line. The vast majority of vehicle manufacturers are already integrated into the project and in October, nearly 50% of registered vehicles are already equipped with electronic tokens. As of May 11, 2016, this type of electronic card will also be issued for mopeds, motorcycles, tricycles and quads.

A poor back header saw Palote challenging the Cieza keeper who could only kick the ball into the path of Jose and the Mazarron striker made no mistake with his eighth goal of the season.Cieza went close with a shot from distance before Mazarron took the lead after an hour. Palote latched on to a through ball and was brought down by the Cieza keeper as he attempted to dribble round him to place the ball into an empty net. Quesada Golf Society
Last Wednesday Quesada Golf Society travelled south and inland towards Murcia on the dual-carriageway which simply stops before reaching Murcia City and has still to be completed when Government funding becomes available some time in the future. The course we played, which is just off a completed section of the said dual carriage-way, was the ex-Polaris World course Hacienda Riquelme. We set off from Quesada with the overnight fog lifting and arrived at the course a hour later and found it still shrouded in fog. Reminded me of when I played football at Rampton prison against the prison staff in the Civil Service Cup many years ago. Clear elsewhere but the prison and its grounds shrouded in fog. A bit surreal. In consequence the earlier tee-times were put back half a hour until the fog had started to clear so this had a knock-on effect. The course was found to be in very good condition with the greens quite undulating. It is a typical Jack Nicklaus designed “desert” course with loads of bunkers and mounds of the dreaded pampas grass which line most of the fairways and a fair amount of water . Suffice it to say many balls fell victim to the pampas grass and were never to be seen again. With the delayed late morning tee-off times the sun had almost gone down when the last couple of groups completed their rounds. There was a reasonable turn-out of 26 players who contested 2 divisions in an individual Stableford competition. There were some decent scores and some indifferent scores on the day as the course is certainly

The next game is on Wednesday 25 November at the course on our doorstep, La Marquesa and will be an individual Stableford competition and also the final round of the annual eclectic competition for 2015. San Miguel Golf Society First Round of Bogey’s Shield
An important day of remembrance for many worldwide found SMGS at Mar Menor for the first time since one day short of a year. Thirty-nine members, accompanied by one guest, turned up to participate in the first round of this season’s Bogeys Shield Competition, an annual event played under Medal format and sponsored by Bogey’s Restaurant, Villamartin Plaza. With fine conditions prevailing scores were far better than those posted during last year’s visit, played under the same format, but with some similar names amongst the prize winners, i.e. John Aitchison, Tony Smale, Paul Cobain and Brian Mulligan. Both John and Darren Hancock broke par and lead the Bogey’s competition with four rounds still remaining. The most favoured score of the day was 77 with, curiously, 7 players making it. Known in mathematics as a ‘Defective Number’ there will be several who scored it feeling that way about their rounds, as will many others. At prize giving the Society brought its Poppy Appeal collection to an end and the total, once counted, will be handed over to the local representative of the Royal British Legion. Thanks in particular to members and guests for their contributions, especially the blobbers, and to Tony Smale for his tin rattling (ok plastic!!) collection efforts. The Medal results (net scores) by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 4th Paul Cobain (77 on CB), 3rd Brian Mulligan (77 on CB), 2nd Chris Hamblett (75) and 1st, Karen Simpson with 73. Silver Category: 4th Theo Boelbouwer (77), 3rd Tony Smale (76), 2nd Alan Gilbert (74), and 1st, one of only two players to better their handicap, John Aitchison with a fine 71. Gold Category: 4th John Osborne (72 on CB), 3rd Paul Guest (72 on CB), 2nd Barry Roehrig (72 on CB) and 1st, the second player to break par, Darren Hancock with an excellent 71.

The Abacus winner was Ron Stenhouse, with a score that was actually not that bad and would have put him on the edge of the prizes a year ago. Nearest the pins (open to all) on the par 3’s were won by Richard McCann (2), Steve Higgins (8), Darren Hancock (14) and Barry Roehrig (17).

COSTA COBRAS RFC AUCTION IN AID OF DEBRA
After an awesome weekend of international 7’s rugby in Elche with the Great Britain ladies winning the women’s final and the Spanish men the men’s final, both in style. A minutes silence was held in respect to what had happened in France by all of the teams. On Friday 19 November, with the help of Victoria’s Tearooms in Almoradi, we are holding an auction to raise money for, DEBRA, the Butterfly Children. The club are auctioning off rugby memorabilia, international rugby shirts from England, Wales and Scotland, donated by Elche rugby club, and club shirts from Leicester Tigers and London Irish as well as other items that have been donated by friends. For more details you can contact the tearooms or myself. We also have Dennis Christian as the auctioneer for the event, so looking at plenty of people coming down to support this event and to have a great evening. All the funds raised on the night are going directly to the charity. You can contact me if you would like to put a bid in for any of the items, and are hoping to get some signed shirts from this last weekend’s tournament in Elche, so come along for a great evening and help this great cause. Costa Cobras RFC are also still training on Monday and Wednesday from 18.0019.30 for the juniors and 20.00-21.30 for the seniors in Daya Vieja at the sports ground.So come a long and join the revolution with this new rugby club from the start and be part of something new in the area. We are looking to be able to put a team in at all levels in the league this time next year so come along and join the newest rugby team on the Costa Blanca and join the rugby revolution.
