Alicante-based terrorist ‘took orders from Paris attack leader’
A TERROR suspect who was caught returning from Syria had been sent to Spain by the ringleader of the Paris attacks, police reveal. Abdeljail Aït El-Kaïd (pictured), a Moroccan living in the Alicante area, left the country in 2014 to join the DAESH, or so-called Islamic State in Raqqa, Syria, the capital of the terrorist organisation’s self-proclaimed caliphate, for combat training. During his week-long stay in the Middle Eastern country, he met Abdelhamid Abaaoud, thought to have been the brains behind the multiple massacres in Paris and who has since been shot dead by police. Abaaoud ordered Aït El-Kaïd’s immediate return to Spain, and he was expected to be involved in the attacks in the French capital. But the Alicante resident was arrested in Warsaw, Poland en route back from Syria
November 2015
via Serbia, thanks to the Spanish Guardia Civil having tipped off Polish authorities. This was in June 2014, and Aït El-Kaïd has been in prison in Spain ever since. Spanish authorities are digging into his affairs for more information, since they are certain he did not return from Syria alone. The accused was travelling with another Moroccan terrorist, Reda Hame, who had also been ordered by Abaaoud to return to Europe. Hame had been instructed to carry out an attack in a Paris concert hall, which may have been the Bataclan in the 10th arrondissement, but was arrested before he was even able to acquire the weapons he needed to do so. It was Aït El-Kaïd who confessed to Spanish police that he and his companion, whom he named, had been returning to Europe on Abaaoud’s orders, and revealed Hame’s intentions and the fact he was on his way to France. The Guardia Civil informed French authorities, who kept Hame under surveillance from a distance and arrested him upon arrival in the country. Hame had travelled through Turkey, Poland, the Czech Republic and The Netherlands, but had separated from Aït El-Kaïd after Turkey since the latter entered Poland via Belgrade. It transpired that Intelligence services did not have Reda Hame on record and it was not known he had travelled to Syria. Barely 6,000 foreign fighters are listed out of the 25,000 who have joined DAESH in Syria and Iraq after travelling from the west, says Interpol. The arrests show how Abaaoud had been planning the attacks for some time. Known by his ‘combat name’ of Abu Omar Sousi, Abdelhamid Abaaoud was killed on Wednesday during the police raid in Saint Dénis in the Paris suburbs. His cousin Hasna Aïtboulahcen, 26, once known for being a ‘party girl’ who dressed in western clothing and who became sucked into Jihad in the last two or three years, perished in a Saint Dénis apartment after a man who was with her either detonated his own, or Hasna’s explosive vest. Abaaoud, 28, was born in Belgium to Moroccan parents and was very high up in the DAESH hierarchy, taking his orders from a spokesman known as Abu Mohammed al-Adnani who had instructed Abaaoud to plan attacks in Europe. Abaaoud was also known as Abu Omar al-Baljiki (‘Abu Omar the Belgian’) and had been on the Intelligence service radar for some time – especially after appearing in the DAESH publication Dabiq in February and revealing he had been planning attacks a month ago in Brussels along with two other terrorists who had trained in Syria. He also bragged about how he had managed to return from Syria ‘without any trouble’ despite his face being known to security forces trough a video showing him driving a pick-up truck. The truck contained the blood-soaked bodies of people taken prisoner by DAESH, killed and tortured, and the footage of Abaaoud transporting him earned him the nickname of ‘the butcher of Raqqa’. thinkspain.com

Migrants storm fence at Spain's north African enclave Melilla
Close to 100 migrants tried to storm the border fence from Morocco into the Spanish enclave of Melilla on Saturday in a scramble that left one man seriously injured, authorities said. Moroccan security forces managed to stop some of the migrants from reaching the fence that seals off Melilla -- one of only two land borders between Africa and the European Union -- but around 30 people still reached it and clambered onto the railings, they said. Two of these managed to get across into the Spanish territory, while one man was seriously injured when he fell from the metres-high fence near the Barrio Chino crossing, authorities in Melilla added in a statement. The man was taken to hospital in Melilla with severe head injuries -- along with three others who were slightly hurt as they too fell from the fence. Other migrants were still clinging onto the railings in high winds, prompting firemen to lay out mattresses and other
material at the base of the fence in an attempt to break any fall. Authorities said the area around Barrio Chino is favoured by migrants and refugees trying to make it into Spain, as the "cluster of homes there allows them to crouch and hide, making it harder for security forces to intercept them." Melilla and Ceuta, another Spanish enclave nearly 400 kilometres (250 miles) away, have for some years been a flashpoint for African migrants trying to enter Spain, with authorities stepping up security by strengthening border barriers. So far this year, according to Melilla authorities, there have been a dozen attempts to cross the border fence there, with more than 100 managing to enter the Spanish enclave. But authorities said this pales in comparison with 2014, when more than 2,000 migrants and refugees managed to enter Melilla. thelocal.com

Coldplay tickets for May on sale this week
BRITISH indie band Coldplay has confirmed the date of its next live performance in Spain as May 26, 2016 in the Barcelona Olympic Stadium. The London-based grunge rockers, led by singer Chris Martin, will be presenting their new album A head of full dreams along with its earlier, most popular tracks at the one-night-only concert, its sole date in Spain for next year. According to the band, the new album will be released on December 4 and includes duets and tracks produced with top artists including Beyoncé, Noel Gallagher, Merry Clayton and Tove Lo. The first single from the CD, Adventure of a lifetime, was released a week ago and tickets for the Barcelona show will go on sale this coming Friday, November 27.

Coldplay’s last album was recorded in a studio in Barcelona and includes tracks with a traditionally-Spanish feel. The band has always retained close ties to the north-eastern city, and staged a competition there in April last year – the lyrics to one of Coldplay’s songs were hidden in a library in Barcelona, and the person who found them would get a free ticket and backstage pass to their concert in London. In the end, a female student found the paper with the lyrics handwritten by Martin, concealed in the Sant Pau i La Santa Creu library in Barcelona’s Raval district, and claimed her free ticket. spain.com

Home-bred Benidorm Indian rhino goes to Ireland to breed
SPAIN'S first-ever Indian rhinoceros born in captivity will soon be leaving Benidorm's Terra Natura theme park for a new life in southern Ireland. Shusto, who is four and already weighs a tonne, is off to the Fota Wildlife Park in the Emerald Isle to take part in an endangered species reproduction programme – but a 'farewell party' open day will be held tomorrow (Sunday) where visitors can wish him well in his new venture. This is the first time a wildlife centre in Spain has sent an Indian rhinoceros to another safari park, and staff and management admit they have lumps in their throats thinking about the departure of one of their most-loved charges. A plaque will be set up in his
ort
honour, marking his date of birth.
The open day is actually only two hours long, because Shusto's training means this is all he can handle of human attention – visitors can see him from noon until 14.00hrs and a tribute to him will be read out at 13.45hrs, given that he has made history on the Costa Blanca and will 'always be in the hearts' of staff at Terra Natura. A teenager in rhino years, Shusto will embark on his journey to Ireland on Thursday, November 26, firstly by road and then by ship, in the company of specialist carers and vets, and has been trained for several weeks in advance to ensure he will go happily into a lorry and

will not suffer stress whilst on board. Rhinos, like nearly all herbivores, are very 'distrusting' animals and need a lot of time to adapt to changes in their environment, meaning the transport lorry has been parked in an area he knows and his carers have been coaxing him in with lots of his favourite treats, love and attention. The European Endangered Species Programme (EEP)'s Indian rhinoceros
breeding scheme is the most intensive on the continent, involving an exhaustive information-gathering exercise covering every one of the species housed in animal parks and a family tree drawn up for each, together with analyses of their demographics and genetic makeup and, finally, a detailed breeding management plan. Each programme has an allocated coordinator supervised and advised by a team of experts. thinkspain.com
EasyJet launches Amsterdam-Tenerife flights as island seeks to capture more Dutch tourists
LOW-COST airline routes between Spain and northern Europe are on the increase as tourism figures pick up, and the latest new flight opened links Tenerife South with Amsterdam. A new EasyJet route due to launch in December will fly twice a week until May, but if it turns out to be a success, will continue through the summer and possibly beyond. President of the Canary Islands' regional government, or Cabildo, Carlos Alonso says Dutch holidaymakers have risen in number by 7% in the past year, largely due to promotional activities Tenerife in particular has been carrying out in The Netherlands. In fact, the Dutch have long been a huge market for Tenerife, with 110,000 of them visiting the island in the first nine months of 2015. At present, flights from Amsterdam, Eindhoven, Rotterdam and Groningen are run by Ryanair, Thomas Cook, Corendon, Transavia, and Arke Fly, the latter a branch of TUI, meaning EasyJet will offer a further choice for those seeking to book trips at minimal cost. The Netherlands itself has also been investigating Tenerife in order to promote it to residents of the North Sea nation – De Telegraaf, which has over 1.5 million readers, and the lifestyle and fashion magazine Nouveau both visited the Canaries and published special features on Tenerife. Travel and trends website YourLittleBlackBook.me, which has over 41,000 fans on Facebook, has taken a recent trip to the island. These media went to Tenerife as part of a programme run by the island's tourist board and the advertising agency O2, and included trips to La Laguna with a cycle tour of the old town, La Orotava, and Puerto de la Cruz, plus a wine-tasting session at La Casa del Vino, a star-gazing excursion and a whale-spotting outing. “Dutch tourists seek active holidays, where they can practice outdoor sports and enjoy excursions in a mild year-round climate,” says the island's tourism councillor Alberto Bernabé. “They like to get to know the local culture and cuisine and try out new things, so the media travel programme sought to showcase attractions that we knew readers of their publication – potential tourists – would enjoy the best.” Tenerife's next promotional drive will take its holiday industry figureheads to the Masters of Luxury high-end-market trade fair held in Amsterdam between December 10 and 14. http://www.thinkspain.com/

Friday & Cyber Monday
Black in Spain
This year Black Friday falls on 27 November and Cyber Monday on 30 November, however only a couple of years ago these days were relatively unknown in Spain. Since stores have decided to embrace any opportunity to launch promos to customers, is it really worth waiting?
use credit cards and often don’t have a lot of time (or patience) for shopping.
Black Friday is the name given to the Friday after Thanksgiving that traditionally heralded the start of the Christmas shopping spree in stores in the United States. Cyber Monday is the Monday immediately after Black Friday; the term was introduced in 2005 when it was noticed that there was a substantial increase in online sales on the Monday after Thanksgiving and hence marketers took this opportunity to offer special promotions to try to increase sales even more. US shoppers have come to expect major discounts on these two days and in the last couple of years Spanish stores have copied the idea. In the US they have studied the different demographics of the two days to target offers accordingly. Black Friday shoppers tend to be older, less internet savvy and often pay in cash. Cyber Monday shoppers are younger, more affluent,
It’s not easy to know exactly what items will be included in store promos, as companies don’t want to risk people waiting all November to make their purchases. One of the best ways to make sure you get the latest information is to sign up to newsletters or follow stores on Facebook as most promotions will only be announced on Thursday evening (for Black Friday) or on Sunday (for Cyber Monday). For in-store promotions remember that items with the biggest reductions will probably only be available in limited numbers (and sizes/colours if we’re talking about clothes and footwear) in order to get customers to visit stores with the hope that they’ll buy something else. For high value items such as electronics or home appliances, it’s a good idea to check the price of an item you’re interested in now as the price may rise slightly in
Well, we haven’t got an answer for that. What we can suggest is that a few days before the end of November you start to check out The E Day – Spain’s “one stop Cyber Monday website” that has had great deals over the last couple of years. http://moneysaverspain.com/
will be more than 1,000 products with special discounts this year, which is 500 more than in 2014. The discounts will be unfolded from as early as this Monday right up until Monday 30, with the majority of offers launched over next weekend. Shoppers will have to be quick as there will be a limited time that these discounts will be on offer, although some will be available for the whole day. El Corte Inglés This will be the third consecutive year that the Spanish department store participates in this pre-Christmas campaign. In 2014, discounts of up to 40% were applied to a wide variety of goods in their shops and online. Adidas The German sports clothing company has announced that it will offer discounts of 25% on all its catalogued items. Media Markt Media Markt will begin launching its discounts on Friday and offers will continue until Monday 30 November, tying in with Cyber Monday. Shoppers can make their purchases in shops or online, and reductions will mainly focus on consoles, films and IT. PC Componentes This is an online retailer that specializes in computer goods and electronics. It has already confirmed that discounts will be placed on items such as graphic cards, smartphones, hard disks, television screens, tablets, laptops, RAM memory, digital cameras, video cameras, gaming products, headphones, keyboards, monitors and consoles. Additionally, discounts of up to 60% will start from this Monday 23 November and continue through to Cyber Monday. Sony From 27 to 30 November, Sony will be reducing
prices on televisions, tablets, cameras, video cameras, headphones, Hi-Fi systems and much more in its shops. The Body Shop This beauty care product shop will offer 40% off all its items online and in its shops (doesn’t include new stock). Visionlab From 27 November until 29 November, Visionlab will reduce all of its products by 40%. This will include glasses, sunglasses, contact lenses or hearing aids. Early shoppers can obtain discounts of 60% for purchases made before 12pm during that weekend. Merkal Calzados From 27 – 29 November, there will be a 20% discount on the collection of shoes with the BLACK code and on Monday 30 November a 20% discount on all products with the code CYBER. Xbox There will be reductions on around 100 different games on Black Friday, although no comment on how much has been made so far. Toys R Us The top shop will be celebrating Black Friday with discounts of 50% on a selection of products throughout the week. This will start this coming Monday and run through until Sunday 29 November, although Cyber Monday will also feature discounted prices on all purchases of at least two products made online (toysrus.es) Each year the number of businesses that participate in the Black Friday campaign grows, and below is a list of additional companies that will have some great offers on their products over the Black Friday weekend. eBay, Phone House, Sprinter, Marypaz, HP, Worten Ikea, Apple, Fnac, Pc Box, Samsung, Zara, Massimo Dutti, Oysho, Mango, H&M, Decathlon, Leroy Merlin Zara, Evolution Juegos Source: www.eleconomista.es, www.abc.es
What is Black Friday and Cyber Monday?
Prepare for Black Friday 2015 Black Friday originated in the US. One month before Christmas, the day after Thanksgiving, prices on commercial goods are reduced to the lowest amount possible just for 24 hours in a bid to kickoff the start of the Christmas present shopping spree period. Since sales periods were deregulated in Spain, the tradition has been carried on over here as well, and next Friday 27 November, the fourth Friday of November, businesses in Spain will be slashing their prices and hoping that Christmas comes early for them as they rack up massive sales. And, in this country, Black Friday, or Viernes Negro, has only been running for three years, but it has already become one of the days of the year that produces the greatest amount of sales in the country. This is followed by Cyber Monday, another day of huge discounts, but related to technology only. Amazon Amazon.es was the first company to start celebrating Black Friday in Spain, and, of course, the American internet giant will be heading the list of participating businesses this year as well. There
What Bargains Can You Expect to Find?
order for the discount to be artificially higher. If you want a specific item then the best advice would be to arrive at the store at opening time Black Friday or you could try asking in store one or two days beforehand whether that particular item will be included in their Black Friday promo (although you might not get an answer!).
So the question is should you wait?

Driving instructors protest over lack of examiners
DRIVING school staff staged a sit-in outside Valencia traffic authorities yesterday (Friday) protesting over a shortage of examiners and restrictions on in-house theory tests, meaning a backlog of youngsters waiting months for the chance to gain their licences. The movement +Examinadores says both situations are forcing driving schools in the region to close down. They gathered outside the traffic ministry building in the city between noon and 15.00hrs, accompanied by a number of pupils who have been waiting for longer than usual for their test dates to come through. The demonstration blocked traffic and even pedestrians from travelling down the C/ Mora de Rubielos. Organisers said the aim of the protest was to get the central government to take action once and for all to clear the backlog and enable theory tests to be held in local centres. Driving schools have been unable to take more pupils on because of the examiner shortage, meaning they are losing money, whilst young adults who are finding it difficult to get a job without being able to drive are at the end of their tether. Further demonstrations are planned for this coming Friday (November 27)
and the next (December 4). Similar protests were held yesterday in Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca, since the problem is widespread across Spain. Unlike in the UK where a ‘driving school’ is usually just an instructor in his or her own car who has the correct formal training and accreditation, in Spain they are actual test centres and academies with office staff and a panel of instructors – and frequently offer other courses and certifications, such as food-handling, hazardous goods-handling, and other instructor qualifications. They offer training and studying for theory tests in classes. In Spain, the minimum age for driving, including learning to drive, is 18, and until the candidate has passed his or her test, it is illegal for him or her to get behind the wheel of any vehicle besides a driving school car. Practising with L-plates in a family member’s or friend’s car whilst accompanied by an experienced driver is against the law, even off-road, and both learner and companion can be fined heavily for driving without a licence in the same way as a person who had passed his or her test would be if he or she drove after having been banned. thinkspain.com

Gibraltar war tunnels to become massive wine cellar
Some 32 miles of tunnels built before Second World War to store £60 million worth of vintage wine A warren of military tunnels inside the Rock of Gibraltar is to be converted into the world’s largest natural storage facility for investment-grade wines. Some 32 miles of tunnels and caverns carved into the Rock by Royal Engineers shortly before the Second World War in the event of an attack on Gibraltar have been lying empty and obsolete for decades. The Ministry of Defence has since handed ownership to local authorities, who have been exploring new uses for the space. Scientific testing of the limestone hulk has now revealed the perfect natural conditions for wine storage, due to the tunnels’ 70-80 per cent humidity levels and constant temperature of between 13 and 14 degrees Celsius. The privately owned scheme’s backers hope that the continued nearby presence of British forces will also help to reassure investors of their spanish legal wine’s security. once the first phase of the project is completed in mid-2017. Tracey Lee, the British CEO and founder of Gibraltar Wine Vaults, said she first approached the territory’s government with the idea 18 months ago. “I knew the tunnels and chambers because my father had access as a Navy man,” Ms Lee said. “You can just feel the humidity inside.” “There are custom-designed warehouses for this kind of product, but people prefer natural conditions”, said Ms Lee. Ms Lee said that Gibraltar’s low-tax financial environment would also prove a draw to high-flying wine merchants, while the size of the tunnels meant there was unparalleled capacity to expand. “Because of the limitless scalability of the site, it is perfect for customers who want to expand their collection all in one place”. The local government said the project was “a new area of economic activity for Gibraltar”. US wants to station its own armed border officials at Madrid airport
Washington seeking to check passengers boarding flights from Spain to its territory The United States has asked Spain for permission to install officers from its own Customs and Border Protection agency at Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport to check for possible terrorism suspects boarding flights to the US. The Spanish government has yet to
officially respond to the request, but has expressed its concerns to Washington that, given that the agents would be armed and hold diplomatic immunity, the measure would involve a handing over of national sovereignty. The US already has three government officials in Madrid checking the documentation of passengers. A 2009

agreement means the US already has three government officials in Madrid checking the documentation of passengers boarding flights not only to the United States but, as EL PAÍS has revealed, also those flying over US territory. Although these officials have the power to prevent passengers considered a security risk from boarding a flight, they are unable to search or arrest suspects on Spanish soil, as Washington is now requesting. The installation of a US Customs and Border Protection checkpoint at Madrid airport would mean submitting passengers to the same stringent luggage and body searches they would undergo upon their arrival in the United States, which would in theory mean they would not have to undergo further checks once on US soil – though Washington reserves the right to impose more. The most controversial issue, however, remains the request for the officers to be armed and enjoy diplomatic immunity, meaning they would not be accountable to Spanish justice if involved in any incident. The Spanish government has already expressed its reservations to Washington and is now consulting with the foreign, interior and public works ministries in order to formulate its definitive response. Spain’s AENA airport authority is also
not believed to be enthusiastic about the proposal over fears that the extra security measures would bring the same long lines now seen at US airports to Madrid. The request forms part of the US’s socalled preclearance program, which was first set up in Canada in 1952 and now encompasses airports in Ireland, the Caribbean and, since 2014, the United Arab Emirates. In May of this year Washington issued requests to extend the program to 10 airports in nine other countries – Belgium, the Netherlands, the UK, Sweden, Norway, Spain, Japan, Turkey and Dominican Republic – though it remains to be seen how many of them will agree. The request is part of the US preclearance program, which began in Canada in 1952 and now encompasses airports in Ireland and the Caribbean In Spain the US proposal gives rise to several problems. The first is a legal one, given that the agreement ought to take the form of an international treaty ratified by parliament. The second relates to national dignity – Spain might not be able to accept such an accord without a clause giving it the right to reciprocate, even if it never intends to take up that right. The third involves the airlines, which might be reluctant to back an agreement if they cannot guarantee passengers that they will not be subjected to further checks upon their arrival in the United States. elpais.com
Deep freeze arrives as polar air front sweeps across Spain
Much of Spain has been put on alert for snow, wind and freezing temperatures as a polar air front sweeps across the nation.
The state meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued weather warnings in 20 provinces in nine of the seventeen of Spain’s semi-autonomous regions, as temperatures in some places are set to drop to below -10 degrees C. The cold weather has hit northern Spain with temperatures plummeting in mountainous regions of Asturias, Cantabria and the Pyrenees. Temperatures have dropped between 12 and 14 degrees C since last week but are expected to rise again from Wednesday. The mountains of Huesca in Aragon are expected to be among the worst hit with the province put on amber alert. The cold weather has also arrived in the Balearic islands, delivering a dusting of snow to the mountains in Mallorca. thelocal.com

Best and Worst Foods for Sleep
Nothing is more annoying than insomnia, and the evidence is piling up that sleep is essential for good health. Although the research is a bit spotty when it comes to which foods help or harm sleep, anecdotal evidence does suggest that certain items consumed right before bedtime are more likely to be “sleep promoters” while others may be “sleep stealers,” says Russell Rosenberg, Ph.D., CEO of the National Sleep Foundation.
Here’s a list of potential good guys and bad guys when it comes to getting some shut-eye.

Freeze Ice Pops The Smart Way
Contact 950 121 936 or email sales@soltimes.com to Advertise in this section
I don’t know about you, but I’ve always called these things Otter Pops! I grew up with a freezer full of them in the summer. I especially loved the jumbo ones I could get from the ice cream truck that circled my neighborhood. Our scissors were always sticky with melted popsicle syrup. Too bad I didn’t think of this then!
Kitchen Tips and Tricks That Nobody Told You About
If you’re anything like me, you spend a lot of time planning meals and preparing food, making all of those helpful kitchen tips and tricks that save you time (and your sanity) worth knowing! And so, I have rounded up some of the best kitchen tips that just might have you saying “Why didn’t I think of that?”. I certainly wish I had known these a long time ago! A few of these “secrets” I know I will use often (like fishing out broken egg shells and freezing leftover sauces). Whether you’re a workaholic who barley has time to open the fridge, a busy stay-at-home mom, or are in the running for your own show on The Food Network, I think you’ll find a few hacks here that will make life easier!
Grate Cold Butter
I haven’t tried this little trick just yet, but I love the idea! Your stick of butter has to be close to frozen for it to work, and you must work fast to keep it from melting, but the grated butter is perfect for adding to flour before baking biscuits, scones, muffins, etc.. It also makes the butter melt much faster, so if your butter is too cold to spread, consider grating it first and then topping toast, veggies, or a baked potato!
Scooping Up A Broken Shell
It happens every time! I make eggs for breakfast just about every morning, and the brown organic eggs seem to break off into little pieces so much easier. Instead of fishing around with your finger to dig them out of your bowl (yeah, I do that), use one of the egg shell halves to scoop it out!

Freshness
I eat too many eggs for them to ever go bad, but this sure is good to know. I got so excited when I saw this, I dug into my fridge to test it for myself. My eggs seemed to be 4-6 days old — good enough! You’re probably wondering how this works, and yes, there is some science behind it. Eggshells are porous, allowing air to slowly get in
How To Peel An Orange
This tip is especially useful for those of you that don’t have any nails to dig into the tough skin of an orange. With a few clever cuts of a knife, you can peel an orange and eat it without juice dripping all over your hands. But best of all, it’s FUN! http://www.listotic.com/
Bathroom Cleaning Shortcuts
Holidays often mean a full house—and more foot traffic in your bathrooms. Give your lavatories luster with these clever uses for household staples
For Spotty Mirrors, Try Black Tea
Tannic acid in the tea helps remove water spots. Pour room-temperature tea into a spray bottle, and wipe with a lint-free cloth
For Cloudy Shower Doors, Try Dryer Sheets
The fabric-softening sheets contain ingredients that cut through soap scum. Just dampen with water before wiping down glass surfaces.
For Rust Rings, Try Lemon Juice
The fruit's acidity will help dissolve the stains left behind by shavingcream cans and other metal containers. To prevent future rust buildup, coat the bottom ring of cans with clear nail polish.
For Dull Faucets, Try Toothpaste
The fine abrasives in non-gel toothpastes make them ideal for shining up chrome faucets and fixtures.
For Stains in the Tub, Try Salted Grapefruit
Citric acid cuts through soapy buildup, and salt provides extra scouring power. Just cut a grapefruit in half and load it up with table salt, then get scrubbing. (A lemon will work, too, but a grapefruit's larger size makes it easy to cover more surface area.) thisoldhouse.com

Tips on keeping your house warmer in winter
alarmas
Every year those of us who live here in colder climates begin to wonder what our heating bills are going to go up to. We enjoy the months when there is no air conditioning running and we see a significant savings before the heating bills arrive. If you are looking for methods to help reduce your energy bills and keep your home warmer then you may want to learn these tips of winterizing your home. Older homes typically have more drafts and older windows without the thicker glass, but you will also find these tips will help with newer homes too. When you are preparing your home for cold weather you should find each area in the home that has a draft or space between the door and frame. Most of the older homes have doors that tend to sag with age and the weather stripping on windows and doors begins to weaken. The first thing you will need to do is replace the weather stripping. You can hire a professional or save a little money and buy the weather stripping yourself. You will want to make sure you are placing the new weather stripping in the exact spot of the old stuff to make sure you are plugging the holes in the frame. You may also want to re-caulk around the windows to make sure you have stopped the drafts. If you are still experiencing problems with drafts when the wind blows hard or your still have cold air seeping in you can do two things. Number one is to buy heavy curtains. The curtains will help block the drafts from seeping into the entire house. While it may not plug the draft completely it does help to keep the cooler air out and the heat in. You can also create fabric snakes. Fabric snakes are just long tubing filled with cushioning that can be place in front of windows and doors to keep the air from seeking in with the drafts. They also add a décor to the home. If you have a larger crevice you will want to use a foam spray with straw to plug the hole. The spray will expand in the hole to keep the air from getting through. You may need to scrap around the area to make sure it is clean of debris before spraying the foam into the areas. You also want to make sure not to spray too much. Overflow will look nasty and it can be hard to cover up with

paint. Older homes usually have wood burning fireplaces. Using the fireplaces instead of the electric heat can save on your energy bill. Also keep in mind that heat rises so if you block off the upstairs rooms you are not using during the day you will keep most of the heat downstairs at a more comfortable level. Heat will still get upstairs, but you won't lose as much. Preparing your home for cold weather can include several options from window coverings, caulking, weather stripping, replacing older boards or windows, and making sure your pipes are wrapped with insulation.

It had been a long time since I’d journeyed back to Blighty; so leaving the 25C weather behind I made my way to the airport. Being early for a change I was cursing nearly half an hour later as the car parking people were late collecting my car at the drop off. Getting to the scanners as usual I was stopped by a bleep; this being the day after the Paris atrocities it was only to be expected. Instead of the usual pat down and being asked to remove my shoes the man had a swab and wiped my clothes and hands and then put the material into a machine. I told him all it would detect was egg mayonnaise sandwich and he laughed and waved me through when the machine said yes. I wonder what would happen if someone gets swabbed after making a joint? Annoyingly nowadays any airport journey to departures involves walking through duty free. There are evil smells everywhere with impossibly cheerful, impeccably groomed dolly birds (and boys) trying to spray noxious sprays on unsuspecting traveller’s exposed skin. Once through I held back the urge to buy over priced underwhelming food and drinks; instead I finished my egg mayo sarnies. Then

Time flies! Coming up to Advent already! But what, you may well ask, is Advent? Well the Christian season of Advent starts on the fourth Sunday before Christmas, and it’s Advent Sunday, not Christmas nor January 1st, that starts the Church Year. The name is derived from the Latin ‘adventus’, meaning “coming”, particularly of course referring to the coming of Christ. So, we have Advent Calendars, counting down the days to Christmas, often with a treat, like a chocolate beneath each door – though these usually start from December 1st, rather than Advent Sunday (29th November in 2015), so losing me 2 chocolates this year! So yes Advent, rather than mid September as seems normal in Britain these days, should be when we start to prepare for the coming of Christmas. And it’s right and proper that we should; for our annual celebration of the birth of God himself as a human child in utter humility and love to all, deserves thorough preparation. But of equal importance; in accordance with its original tradition, Advent should also be a time to reflect on Christ’s assurance that he would in time return; with the challenge that gives us to be ready, lest we prove ourselves no better prepared than folk were at
the time of his birth. But can we in these educated times really believe in Christ’s return? Aren’t such notions more science-fiction than reality? Well yes, that may be, but surely that’s an essential attribute of the Divine; to define the rules of creation, rather than to be bound by them. For to limit belief only to things we’ve seen and understand necessarily excludes acceptance of any possibility of God, rejects faith and destroys hope, leaving little joy in life. So yes, I firmly believe in Christ’s resurrection and that he will one day physically return to, in some amazing way, raise all back to life. I may not understand how, but if he really is the creator God, then why should that present any problem to Him? I spied proof that the world has gone bureaucratically mad as a uniformed woman was patrolling the floor photographing litter. I watched as she pirouetted about the floor stopping every so often to take out her camera and take souvenir snaps of the things people had dropped. I wondered why instead she didn’t just pick the litter up. Landing in Gatwick and turning my phone on I wondered why my wife had left messages asking which terminal I was in. All became clear as the pilot calmly told us that we’d been switched from North to South due to an ‘incident’. Once off the plane that ‘incident’ had meant the evacuation of one terminal into the one I was now in. A quick Twitter trawl lead me to the ‘Daily Wail’ which hysterically told me that a madman armed with guns and possibly bombs had tried to attack an EasyJet desk then run away. Only afterwards did the gun turn out to be an airgun but better to disrupt 10,000 people than take the risk after the day’s before awfulness in Paris. I stepped into arrivals to find those 10,000 people standing in my way. There was no signage or anyone in charge for me to ask
how to walk the 50 yards to the railway station so I followed one of the 10,000’s advice and 5 minutes later was standing outside the airport with no station in sight. Back tracking to the airport I finally worked my way into the station only to find I’d missed the once hourly train by a whisker. Keeping calm I then spent a fiver on a newspaper and bottle of water; water that cost me three times the price of a litre of petrol. How can anyone regularly afford to let the train take the strain in the UK? Four short trips over a few days cost as much as my return flight from Spain. Plus trains were late, cancelled, replaced by buses and worst of all; often the toilets were closed. My flights in total were twenty times further and twice as long time wise. Plus I got a free sandwich and drink on the plane and the toilets worked.

Franco’s remains should be removed Spain lawyer Garzon A prominent Spanish lawyer has launched a petition calling for the removal of the remains of former dictator General Franco from their official resting place. Baltasar Garzon said the Valley of the Fallen should instead be converted into a victims’ memorial. The move comes on the eve of the 40th anniversary of Franco’s death. H e defeated the Republicans in Spain’s bloody 1936-39 civil war, ruling until 1975. Spain made the successful transition to democracy afterwards, but Franco’s legacy remains painful, with families still searching for the remains of loved ones. Political parties at the time agreed to amnesty for crimes committed during and after the civil war, meaning that no trials have been held. In the petition, Mr Garzon calls for the removal of Franco-era symbols from the site and says there should be an official apology.
Strictly Week 9 from the Tower Ballroom, Blackpool
With another action packed professional Lindy Hop opening the show, I was really excited as it was coming from the home of Ballroom Dancing in Blackpool. A venue much larger than the studio in London and one which normally sorts the men out from the boys as it is much more difficult to ‘fill’ a floor of this size. Opening were Jay McGuinness and Aliona and a Salsa. With a very clean slick performance and an ease with the armography that you didn’t know who the celebrity was. Jay was so relaxed this week and so at home amongst other professional dancers with his performance. I awarded him 9 and the judges 36. Jamelia and Tristan were next with a Quickstep. Although they covered this big floor well, I found the quality of her performance wanting, her frame was not tight enough, she wasn’t closing her feet anywhere nor pointing her toes. I gave her 6 and the judges a very generous 31. Following were Anita Rani and Gleb and a Paso Doble. Performed to a traditional piece of Spanish music Anita displayed excellent intensity and superb use of flamenco arms and lines. She just fails to point her toes which stopped me from giving her a 10 so a 9 and the judges 37. Next to dance were Katie Derham and Anton with an American Smooth. Nerves again marred her performance half way through. This seems to happen every week, nerves take over, she goes wrong then finds it very difficult to pull it back. This week her dance went lumpy from the middle which she found
“We have a serious problem with coming to terms with what was done and find solutions. It’s very Spanish to wait for the storm to pass,” said Mr Garzon. Spanish dictator General Franco Franco was dictator of Spain for almost four decades The Valley of the Fallen was built largely by prisoners of war. More than 30,000 dead from both sides in the civil war were moved there on Franco’s orders in a bid to promote reconciliation. Instead, it became widely seen as a divisive reminder of the years of dictatorship. There have been previous appeals for the removal of Franco’s remains but they have been resisted by the governing Popular Party. Mr Garzon is best known for helping to secure the arrest of the former Chilean leader Augusto Pinochet in London in 1998. http://www.bbc.com/
so polished. I gave her 8 and the judges 34. Closing the show were Kellie Bright and Kevin with a Quickstep. Even though it was very well danced with a myriad of kicks, flicks and skips I found it didn’t wow me and left me a bit flat but nice job. I awarded her 8 and the judges 37.
difficult to recover from. I awarded her 7 and the judges an extremely generous 35. Peter Andre and Janette then performed a 60s themed Jive. The pop choreography was great but once he started Jive basic - oh dear! His Jive chasses didn’t happen, his weight was in his heels, he looked heavy and Jive has to be on the toes and light footed. I gave him 7 and he ended up in bottom slot with 29 from the judges. Georgia May Foote and Giovanni were next with an American Smooth. Wow! Such superb control, elegance, body contact which never moved whether dancing the turns, fleckerls (circular movement on the spot) or pivots. A fantastic performance which gained another 10 from me (she had one last week too) and 38 from the judges. Helen George and Aljaz followed with a Charleston. This unfortunately wasn’t Helen’s dance. She somehow looked heavy legged - is she getting burned out? Despite it being an action packed Charleston, I found it looked a bit ‘careful’ she needed to let go a bit more and not be quite
In the bottom two this week were Peter and Jamelia with Jamelia leaving the show after the judges 3 to 1 vote on the dance off. Next week back to the studio and normality but the going is really getting tough. With only a couple of weaker dancers left it literally could go anyway. A weak dance from anyone and they could find themselves out of the show. Can’t wait for next week can you? Buildings with History
Did you know that Alicante is home to the benchmark for all Spain’s measurements of altitude above sea level? Alicante is home to many historical civil and religious buildings, all of which reveal a past that has been decidedly marked by the history and proximity of the Mediterranean Sea. Alicante, Ground zero for Spanish sea level visitors to the Baroque Palace that is the Alicante City Council building will find a plaque on the first step of the staircase that signals a geographical ground zero: Cota Cero, which marks the exact ‘sea level’ then used to define altitude above sea level. Recently renovated and expanded, this plaque is one of the more unusual must-see sights of Alicante and makes for a great photo opportunity.
The Carbonell House CASA CARBONELL/CARBONELLBUILDING Known as “Casa Carbonell” or “Carbonell House” and standing at Number 1 on the Explanada
In the 19th century, scientists discovered that the difference between high tide and low tide was smaller along the Alicante coastline, and they chose the first step of the Alicante City Council staircase – with the nomenclature NP1 – as the spot to mark official sea level for the entire country. The Baroque Palace is a great experience and well worth a visit. Next to Cota Cero, alongside the staircase leading up to the city council offices, there is even a sculpture by Salvador Dalí.
the foot of the building’s main staircase is the socalled Ground Zero.

It has a rectangular floor plan in the style of a basilica, with a circular appendage in the south-west corner topped by a semispherical cupola, “La Rotonda”. One of its two storeys is a half-basement due to the incline of the surrounding streets. Leading business tourism entities in Abu Dhabi have joined Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi) at the European Incentive, Business Travel & Meetings Exhibition (IBTM World) trade show in Barcelona, Spain, to raise awareness of the services and products they offer, and to promote the emirate for business-focussed visitors. Sixteeen participants have signed up to join the Abu Dhabi pavilion at IBTM World (previously called EIBTM), the leading global event for the meetings, incentives, conferences, events and the business travel industry, which expects to attract more than 15,000 MICE industry professionals to the three day event from November 17-19. The pavilion is the biggest ever deployed at the event by TCA Abu Dhabi, and will include for the first time a representative from Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce & Industry, TCA Abu Dhabi Cruise, Al Burj Travel & Tours and the Armed Forces Officers Club & Hotel. Also joining the delegation will be the Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company (ADNEC), The Vision Destination Management company, 1001 Events, SNTTA Emir Tours & Travel LLC and Abu Dhabi Motorsports Management as well as high-end hotel chains including the InterContinental Abu Dhabi, The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort, Abu Dhabi, Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi, the Ritz Carlton Abu Dhabi,
Grand Canal, Crowne Plaza Yas Island, Anantara Hotels, Resorts & Spas and Al Raha Beach Hotel, and the booth will also boast an Arabic calligrapher. “The variety of exhibitors this year is highly significant as it is a reflection of just how much the destination is growing in terms of choice for meetings and events planners,” said to Mubarak Al Shamisi, Director of the Abu Dhabi Convention Bureau, a division of Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi). “With 2014’s total of 14,640 guest arrivals from Spain, this represented an increase year-on year of 14% on 2013, and in the first six months of this year we have seen the numbers of Spanish visitors to the emirate well on target to reach double-digit growth once more,” added Al Shamisi. Highlighting its business-focussed provisions at the Abu Dhabi pavilion for the very first time in Barcelona will be the five-star Armed Forces Officers Club & Hotel, with Senior Business Development Executive Salma Cherami, enthusiastic about participating in this month’s event. “Our target for 2016/17 season is to increase 50 per cent to 60 per cent for the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions sector,” said Cherami. “We are very excited to be involved in IBTM World with TCA Abu Dhabi, as we are looking to attract even more business from the European market. To achieve this we believe we have a wonderful property which boasts unique and

authentic Arabic hospitality mixed with an atmosphere of culture and heritage, offering luxurious accommodation in classic style with modern touches. We will be emphasising our outstanding selection of traditional Arabic amenities, our variety of fine restaurants but most importantly a large choice of halls and rooms suitable for conferences which include all the latest equipment,” she added. Also returning to the Abu Dhabi pavilion for this event will be a representative from InterContinental Abu Dhabi, and Director of Sales & Marketing from the property, Fady Atwan, was also looking forward to a positive outcome from their participation. “We are aiming to increase and drive more MICE and Corporate business from Spain, and also the EU in general,” said Atwan. “So we are very excited about our participation in IBTM World with TCA Abu Dhabi. The EU/ Spain market is huge and has a great number of potential clients for us in the Incentive, Meetings and Conferences arena. We are expecting to increase existing business and generate a fair market share with some new clients,” he added. IBTM World expects to attract more than 3,100 exhibitors to the three-day event in the award winning business and tourism destination of Fira, Barcelona. - See more at: http://ameinfo.com/

The search
Alqueria was stunned into silence. When one considers that silence for any Alquerian is an act of great self-control so for the whole Pueblo to be silent must suggest the enormity of the crime. Manuela apparently kidnapped. The Hill People blamed the Newcomers who denied any knowledge of the disappearance. One helpful individual suggested she may have been kidnapped by intelligent beings from another world. This argument doesn’t hold water however as these beings would have to have visited Alqueria in order to do the body snatching and anyone visiting Alqueria of their own free will and on purpose doesn’t demonstrate much in the way of intelligence. The menfolk of Alqueria began a systematic and painstaking search of the Village. The women however didn’t show anything like the enthusiasm of their male counterparts and adopted a wait and see policy as an alternative. In order for the Newcomers to prove that they had no hand in the disappearance they allowed their homes to be searched. When the womenfolk heard of this they changed their minds instantly. They weren’t going to pass up the chance of snooping around the private possessions and the intimate places of their enemy and took part with gusto. All this searching and counter searching meant that the conflict and civil unrest was put on hold with the mutual consent of both barrios, one of the few times Alqueria has been truly united. The
viewpoint
Village was searched from the top of the castle battlements to the depths of the Bar La Golondrina’s cellar. Frederico Alkraapo was given the task of searching Loco Paco’s property, he is still receiving counselling and is in such a state of mental confusion he even considered joining the Tory party.
During the evening, when house searching had been mixed with liberal quantities of Remitroot wine and whisky the Town was in uproar. Some of the more personal items were paraded through the streets for all to see. One lady of advancing years was seen holding one of Manuela’s ‘appliances’ with a look of woman who has recognised a long lost friend but forgotten their name. It was when these proceeding were in full swing that an apparition appeared, or seemingly an apparition. Manuela calmly sauntered through the stunned, silent crowd quietly wondering what all the fuss was about. When questioned she refused to answer any questions and failed to offer any reason for her disappearance. An enigmatic smile and dishevelled hair gave some clue and also fuelled many theories ranging from the improbable to the physically impossible.
A Bit Late
In response to the summons to hear the results of my biopsy we arrived punctually at Huercal-Overa Hospital. I had dressed confident in the knowledge that this encounter would take the form of a discussion, but Pete queried whether I was wearing the right clothes, suggesting that something easier to get out of and into again might not be more appropriate. However, I knew better – I had been X-rayed and scanned more thoroughly than the sarcophagus of Tutankhamun, there could not possibly be anything more to be learnt by sight. I entered the hallowed sanctum on the command of Nursie, closely followed by Pete, who had noticed that husbands, or if not available, a friend, were expected to put in an appearance in a supporting role. We sat expectantly, and were told the anticipated news without drama by the quietly spoken gentle-faced Consulta. Then Pete was proved right – he needed to have a look! I struggled out of my top and abandoned my bra, wishing that I had not worn one in the first place. While Nursie typed assiduously next door he surveyed my frontage solemnly, both face-on and in profile. He had the contemplative look of one who is viewing a priceless portrait by an Old Master and has to present a learned dissertation later on the subject. Then he very gently felt both boobs, comparing the offending one with its blameless companion - never have my two best features been treated with such totally dispassionate yet tender care - I

The signal that the touchy-feely bit was completed was when he stood back and removed his gloves, triggering Nursie to abandon her keyboard and hurry in with a small towel, which she held suspended over my upper half. The conversation then recommenced with us standing opposite each other while Nursie held the modesty towel between us. He gave an in-depth clinical description of the findings of both the biopsy and his examination before leaving me to dress with the determination that in future I will not wear a bra to any breast-related consultation. However, although I applaud Nursie’s efforts to preserve my decorum, I couldn’t help feeling that her efforts were a little late – by now the Consulta had an indepth knowledge of my lady bits!

holes in it with a skewer and spoon over 2 tbsp of your chosen alcohol. Leave the cake to cool completely in the tin. To store, peel off the baking parchment, then wrap well in cling film. Feed the cake with 1-2 tbsp alcohol every fortnight, until you ice it. Don’t feed the cake for the final week to give the surface a chance to dry before icing
Expert Tips & Tricks From The dailymail.com
■■ Use the best ingredients you can afford. A cake is not transformed by pouring lots of brandy over it. Try a really good cognac, Madeira or whisky. ■■ Don’t use last year´s nuts that have been left in the back of your cupboard. Also check the sell-by-date on your spices. ■■ Roast the nuts to release their oils and make sure to soak the fruit in the alcohol for at least 12 hours before you bake. ■■ Make sure the cake is completely cooled before wrapping it up to be stored. Never wrap a warm cake. ■■ Cover it in parchment paper and then foil for storage. If well wrapped it does not need to be kept in a tin. ■■ Don’t put too much alcohol in your cake- it might be delicious but it will also be impossible to cut.

The foodie traveller in … Málaga’s new gastro market
The much talked-about makeover of Málaga as a destination in its own right isn’t limited to its newly opened art galleries. The ambitions of the city that has long served as the gateway to the Costa del Sol have taken a gastronomic turn, with a developing food scene. The latest addition is a gourmet food market in the style of Madrid’s Mercado de San Miguel and Barcelona’s emblematic Boqueria. The Mercado Merced is in the heart of Málaga, a few steps from the birthplace of the city’s most famous son – Pablo Picasso. After six months of renovations, the new market was unveiled last month with 22 stalls, showcasing both stalwarts and newcomers to Spanish cuisine – a mix of innovators and traditional producers. Cot-Cot sells classic tortilla made from its own eggs At Arequipa, the fusion of Latin and Asian flavours is the work of a celebrated young chef, Diego Gallegos, whose restaurant Sollo, in the nearby town of Fuengirola, has had rave reviews since opening earlier this year. Arequipa’s calamar japo is a musttry: grilled calamari served on a reduced tomato-based sauce with kimchi salsa, Japanese red chillies and fresh coriander, is A decade ago verdejo was barely known outside a small area north-west of Madrid. Now the full-bodied white is popular across Spain and beyond. Verdejo comes from the area around the small town of Rueda, south of Valladolid, and just 10 years ago was barely known outside this part of Spain. Now it’s hugely popular across the country and is sold in restaurants and supermarkets in the UK (Morrisons has just started stocking it). Verdejo is light but full-bodied and aromatic, and a glass/bottle goes down dangerously quickly. I often compare it to a New Zealand sauvignon blanc, although it’s not as gooseberryfruity. A bottle starts at around €3 in Spain (€8 gets you something really good) and well under £10 in the UK. The towns, villages and bodegas of the Rueda area lie on a plateau about 700 metres above sea level, so while summers are dry and hot, temperatures fall steeply at night, meaning there’s an acidity in the grape. Verdejo from Finca Montepedroso Traditionally every house had a cellar, a bodega, carved out of the gravelly soil below grandma’s bed, where wine was made and stored. Few of these are used today, but new commercial bodegas above ground are multiplying rapidly and wine tourism is booming. Most of the wineries welcome visitors (make a reservation) and there’s a Ruta del Vino de Rueda with downloadable maps and listings. On a hill above Rueda town, the futuristic glass-and-concrete winery of Finca Montepedroso is a great example of this new breed. Its floor-to-ceiling windows have spectacular views over the vineyard and beyond, and the fact that this winery’s oenologist has studied in South Africa and New Zealand shows how ambitious some verdejo winemakers are to realise the grape’s potential. French-owned Belondradre y Lurton is very distinctive. Again, the architecture is spectacular – its new building curves to take in the panorama. But it is its way of making wine that makes it stand out from the crowd: it leaves the wine to ferment in oak barrels for months, rather than using steel tanks and bottling it young. That helps explain the hefty price tag, around €26. Winemaker Marta Baquerizo Mesonero-Romanos patiently explained the complexities of its wine to a man with a €6 palate. Marta’s taste in food was a little more affordable. She sent me off for a great

An outpost of the Antigua Casa de Guardia (Málaga’s oldest bar, built in 1840) offers the city’s sweet wines, vermouth and sherry from its own winery. Local favourite Pajarete 1908 is a dark wine made from pedro jimenez grapes. The traditional part of the market, with 17 meat, produce and fish vendors, opens in early November. http://www.theguardian.com/
On the verdejo wine trail in central Spain dish of chickpeas and octopus at La Atrevida (Calle Tomás Bayón), a tiny bar in the nearby village of La Seca. Castillo de la Mota. This land was fought over for centuries by the kings of Castile and Aragon, and the countryside is scattered with medieval castles. Castillo de La Mota in Medina del Campo is fascinating, particularly the imposing tower from which Cesare Borgia escaped in 1506, by presumably suitably machiavellian means. And closer to Valladolid is Castillo de Fuensaldaña (book ahead on +34 983 42 71 74) which looks like it might have been designed and built by Lego. Over a few days I visited half a dozen bodegas, from the very traditional Bodegas de Alberto – on a site where wine was produced by 17th-century Dominican monks and there’s a kilometre-long series of cellars to explore – to the very modern José Pariente run by a mother and daughter team, who store the wines in giant concrete eggs. Once the capital of Spain, Valladolid proved a surprisingly charming base. The tapas were fantastic, particularly at Los Zagales (Calle de la Pasión 13) and El Corcho (Calle Correos 2). But the city’s culinary claim to fame is lechazo, suckling lamb. My €19 serving at Mesón Arandino (Calle Embajadores 56) was just as tender and tasty as its more famous piggy cousin. It’s a lovely city to explore. Miguel de Cervantes lived here for a few years, and his house on Calle del Rastro (€3, free Saturday afternoon and Sunday) is open to the public. Christopher Columbus died in Valladolid, and Casa Museo de Colón, on Calle Colón, can also be visited (€2). I never learnt to pronounce verdejo to the satisfaction of the barmen of Castilla y León – but thankfully their compañeros back in Barcelona are pretty used to interpreting tourists’ mangled efforts in Spanish. Verdejo, you misheard it here first... http://www.theguardian.com/

Book Review
Lady of the Shades by Darren Shan
www.carolnaylor.blogspot.com - www.carolesleynaylor.wordpress.com - naylorcl@hotmail.es
Shan is a successful writer of children’s horror stories. His first attempt at writing for adults didn’t do particularly well although he did acquire an adult following with the publishing of The City Trilogy and then Lady as he affectionately calls it. The idea for Lady was conceived in 1999 and the book was finally published in 2012, 13 years in the making! The book was based around the old film noir movies such as Double Indemnity and Hell’s Horizon. Including a number of ghosts who haunt the protagonist because of his murky past was Shan’s additional contribution to this popular genre. In exploring the boundaries of a dark supernatural thriller Shan admits to his purpose which was “to really mess with the minds of readers.” What he does in fact, is to “mess” initially with the mind of Ed, the main character who is forced into questioning what is real and what is unreal. We discover the truth when Ed discovers it but what is fascinating is that we rarely understand the truth. It’s a bit like saying that the goalposts are constantly changing. The story has a dramatic opening with an assassination in Chile with a graphic description, typical of Shan’s style: “His head exploded in a cone of bone, brain and blood.” Then we discover that the assassin has been approached by the “tight-fisted gangster” Mikis Menderes to perform another “operation.” The thriller angle is developed from the start, Ian Fleming style, engaging and gory. Ed is an American writer, interested in the paranormal and SHC-Spontaneous Human Combustion. His main belief is that ghosts might be the result of a “violent, unnatural death.” He meets Joe in London who shares his interests but all is not what it seems! The pair are conducting some ghostly research for the new novel:”immersing himself in the murky world of the dead” is how Ed describes it. He admits to “hovering on the abyss of an insane pit” but he is determined to prove that ghosts are real and that his mind is not “deluded.” We are given insight into his deep insecurities and disturbed mind constantly questioning his own sanity throughout the novel. He thrives

on danger and finds “normality” tedious. “The quest for answers has kept me sane.” The shades represent the apparitions that haunt hum and the lady is Deleena Emerson who Ed falls passionately in love with. And yet is she another of Ed’s spectres? Ed knows that the apparitions want him destroyed and the story reveals horrendous details of Ed’s past showing cruelty and ruthlessness. Hard to believe for a writer of fiction. He becomes infatuated and obsessed with Deleena the “ghost of the girl” he thinks about constantly and this distracts him from writing his novel although she does have a calming effect on Ed and makes him feel “different, less complicated and reserved.” It is a “chaste affair” with feelings of lust and longing without the sex! Ed becomes hopeful that she will cure him of his ills and “banish the spectre of the ghosts.” The two major themes are betrayal and deception and as the novel progresses the revelation becomes apparent that Ed’s “creature of the shadows” the love of his life doesn’t exist. Murders ensue followed by a dabbling in the paranormal and a visit to a mystic to make contact with Deleena’s spirit and discover the truth. Shan plays mind games with Ed and of course the reader until the bitter and twisted truth rears its ugly head. Ed’s soul is destroyed and he plunges into hell a broken man bearing maudling thoughts of death. “I’ve been a figure in a tragic play. Now I must accept my fated end with the same dignity and resignation as Othello or Macbeth.” The fatal flaw? Greek tragedy? Shakespearian tragedy? Call it what you like. Dark and chilling but thrilling. Publisher: Orion Books. ISBN: 978-409-4360-4

Land Rover Discovery Sport Safety award
recognise pedestrians; but then safety is a constantly evolving crusade, where even the best have room for improvement. INSTRUMENTED TEST Land Rover seemingly loves oddly proportioned vehicles. Look at the LR4: A concrete parasol could hardly look more top-heavy. And since the Holden Efijy never went into production, the Range Rover Evoque became the industry’s first factory lead sled, albeit one with its skirts hiked up over muck boots.
This vehicle was crash tested by Thatcham Research on behalf of euro NCAP. The damage is the result of a 40mph frontal impact, and its best overall NCAP score of all cars tested in 2014 has helped earn the Discovery Sport the What Car? Safety Award. Most impressive is just how far Land Rover has gone beyond the required standards for a five-star
NCAP rating. Adult protection is rated as the second-highest score of the year, child and pedestrian protection are highly credible and the safety assist rating dwarfs that of rivals, aided by standard-fit AEB across the range and an external pedestrian airbag. The only demerit comes because the AEB system doesn’t yet
The new Discovery Sport is another creatively proportioned Rover. In photos, it looks compact, but to see it in person is to do a double take at just how diminutive it is. It looks like it’s always farther away than it is. At 180.7 inches long, it’s about nine inches longer than the Evoque but still a couple inches shy of competitors like the Audi Q5 and the BMW X3.

Speeding Fines on the Increase
Speeding motorists are handing over 470,000 euro to the DGT every single day, a 30% increase on last year. In the first three quarters of 2015, 127.4 million euro has been collected from drivers caught by fixed and mobile radars. In 2014, the total was 129.6 million, increasing from 124 million in 2013 and 120 million in 2012. In the current trend continues, the end of year figure will be almost 170 million euro for 2015. The figures show a continual increase in the trend for speeders being fined, increasing from 355,075 euro per day last year to the 470,396 euro per day currently. The DGT believe that the increase is not caused entirely by an increase in speed by individuals, but by an increase in the number of vehicles using the roads. Similarly, the DGT also say that despite the figures for speeding fines increasing, other sanctions show a downward trend. Another possibility is that traffic studies influenced the decision to drastically modify the plan for speed control on the roads. In February, following a 40% increase in speed related deaths in January, it was announced that more focus would be given to secondary roads, which account for 80% of all related fatalities, a figure which compares directly with the 81% increase in speeding motorists caught on this type of road. Speeding fines have something of a unique character in so much as many people who get caught speeding fail to acknowledge or accept their own failings and many of those believe that the fines are nothing more than a way for the government to increase taxation. In fact, a recent survey states that 90% of speeding driver believe that their fine is nothing more than a hidden tax. However, the DGT point out that the taxable element of fines has reduced, despite the increase in revenue, dropping from 392 million euro in 2011 to 458 million in 2014. Former Director General of the DGT, Pere Navarro, says that “Traffic law remains the law most violated in our country with nearly 13 million penalty proceedings a year between all administrations, which indicates that fines are necessary”, whilst also pointing out the need to raise awareness amongst drivers of the need to reduce speed, because, “If we only do surveillance, control and punishment, there will be a rejection of the citizens”, because they will not understand the real reasons behind the sanctions and the fact that inappropriate speed is one of the main contributing factors to road traffic incidents and fatalities, and, therefore, the reality of the sanctions is that they are there to save lives.
Winter Tyre Sales Expected to Increase
Winter TyresOver the next four months, winter tyre sales in Spain are expected to reach 500,000 units, an increase of 25% over last year. According to tyre distributor Grupo Andrés, tyres specifically designed for winter roads are becoming increasingly popular in Spain, with more than 800,000 vehicles expected to be fitted with them for next year. The tyres are specifically designed for areas where the temperature drops below 7 degrees, and reduce the risk of incidents during rain, snow and ice by up to 38%, according to European data. CEO of the company, Eduardo Salazar, pointed out that a car travelling at 50 kilometres per hour fitted with traditional tyres require an additional 5 metres to stop on wet ground during winter. On icy roads, a car with traditional tyres require requires an additional 8 metres, the equivalent of two cars placed one after the other. The company also pointed out that winter tyres are between 15% and 25% cheaper than conventional tyres, and are more cost effective during the season when driven at appropriate speed and with gentle manoeuvring such as acceleration and braking.

It feels small from the driver’s seat— in a good way. There’s sufficient space, but sightlines give a good feel of where the car’s corners are. You sit high, with a nice view down through the side windows and over the hood. The back seat is likewise spacious, with ample room for six-footers to sit behind six-footers. Here, too, visibility is excellent— certainly better than in the Evoque, with its style-oversubstance roofline pinching the rear windows to almost comedic slits. Then again, the Discovery Sport is a real vehicle, whereas the Evoque is a fashion accessory, a turbocharged purse poodle. Land Rover offers a third-row seat in the Disco Sport, but our test example didn’t have it. Nor did we want it. Thirdrow seats in trucklets this size tend to be so small that children outgrow them at about the time they become self-sufficient enough to sit that far out of Mom and Dad’s reach. However, no other luxury ute in the Discovery Sport’s size offers a third row, so if your only requirements are that neighbours be impressed by your key fob and seatbelt count, then you should know that the third-row seat is a $1750 option that includes HVAC vents and a USB port for the wayback inmates.

BULL FLANAGAN POPPY DAY MATCH REPORT
The golf society travelled up the motorway for their match at Alenda and as is normal for this course the conditions were excellent and the weather was also excellent for golf. The occasion had a set back as the golf course now said they were charging an additional fee for buggies, however after lengthy discussion an agreement was reached but we were left with a dilemma that with the current charges we probably would not be returning as they are pricing themselves out of the normal market place. On to the golf now I have to report that no members were able to beat the course and the highest score on the day was from Martin Collins on 30 points. Three other players had the same score of 39 points and on back nine countback second place with a back nine of 15 points went to Barrie Hopkinson and third place went to Alan Gifford with a back nine of 14 points. Nearest the pin prizes went to Alan Gerenscer, Terry Sharley and Ian Allison. Winner of the football card with Manchester United was Ian Allison. After the match as usual all players returned to the Bull Flanagan Bar / Restaurant in Quesada for the prize winner’s presentation where members and guests were able take the opportunity to sample a refreshing drink before having a choice of a sponsored free lunch provided by Chris Stott of the Bull. Chris Stott the Captain gave a resume of the day’s event and hoped everyone had enjoyed their day out .and he looked forward to joining all members again at subsequent events and he commented also on the quality condition of the course
and the really fast, fast greens. Chris hoped everyone had enjoyed the meal prepared by and made available from Bull Flanagan to all players and guests and his staff for the efficient way that all meals had been distributed in 25 minutes. Members then showed their appreciation in the usual manner for the continued support of Bull Flanagan and excellent service and quality of meals available on match days. The Captain assisted the secretary with the presentation of the prizes for the day’s event which had sponsorship from Mick the Grip on behalf of the Royal British Legion and additional prizes were also available for all prize winners from the table in addition to the normal days prizes. A card draw was also held for many of the Royal British Legion prizes The secretary notified members that the Santa’s Special December match would be at Vistabella on the 18th and he thanked everyone who contributed to the days event and the charity support for the Royal British Legion which raised 100 euros. Members should go direct to the course where Bacon butties and coffee would be available and after the match a Christmas dinner would be available at the Bull Flanagan to all players with guests being able to attend at an individual price of 7-50 euros. Bull Flanagan Golf Society look forward to seeing you at our future events and appreciate your support. If you wish to join the best Society on the Costa Blanca contact the Secretary Bill Fantom on 635212916. (the attached photograph shows the winning players sporting their Poppy Day goodies)

El Plantio 2 Golf society
El Plantio 2 Golf Society held a Yellow Ball competition on Tuesday attended by a healthy turn-out of 21 members utilising 7 three ball teams - each member of the team having responsibility of 6 shots using the Yellow Ball, with each Stableford score counting double. However each lost ball, usually in the dreaded 3rd and 7th water holes, counts a deduction of 2 points. Such was the pressure that this causes resulted in only 4 Yellow Balls being returned with one team losing 2 balls. The results this week were:Nearest the pin: Hole 2 - Lyn Young, Hole 8 - Mike Williams 3rd Place: Martin Rickman, Bryan Watson, Alan Robinson - 115 points 2nd Place: Ian Henderson, Alan Scrimshaw, Mike Williams - 118 points 1st place: David Swann, Dave Southwell, Gordon Wayne - 129 points 15 Players then retired to Los Almendros Restaurant in Torrellano for presentation of the various competitions held during the previous year and also to enjoy a superb `menu del dia`. Spanglish Golf Society (in association with Costa Blanca Green Fee Services) at Font Del Llop on 18th November 2015. For the latest meeting the Spanglish Golf Society and a group of 23 players visited the established course at Font del Llop taking advantage of the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. The weather was absolutely beautiful for mid November and the course was in superb condition with some of the fastest greens we have played on this year. Today's event was match play team event which was a Captain (Graham Hall) versus Vice-Captain (Jack Fanning) Challenge. Despite a balanced draw of the teams in handicap order the much anticipated close event failed to materialise with the Vice Captain's team winning by a comfortable 4.5 points to 1.5 points. The Captain had to eat some humble pie and hand over the 'Capitan's Hat' to his opponent the very happy Jack Fanning and ALL of the winning team received a prize of a set of drinks glasses. We did have a few minor prizes with Ray Muttock and Danny Wheatley
receiving prizes for nearest the pins on the 3rd and 17th holes. The football card was won by John Clark After the game we returned to the Spanglish bar, which is located at Dona Pepa, Quesada for a welcome meal prepared by the bar and the prize presentation and we give our thanks for their support. Our next fixture is the friendly day at Vistabella on Wednesday 2nd December 2015 and the Christmas Competition is at Las Colinas on Wednesday 16th November 2015 and both are already almost FULL. If you are interested in joining the society call Paul Cawte on 966731223 or Graham Hall on 664692638 or better still pop into the bar. LA SIESTA GOLF SOCIETY – CARITAS CHARITY DAY 2015 On Thursday 12th November La Siesta Golf Society held their Annual Charity Day at Campoamor Golf Club. Unfortunately the club is going through substantial maintenance and we are on temporary greens etc. This resulted in a much smaller turnout than normal. However our thanks go out to the hardly folk who came along to support the Captain´s Charity. 1st came Mike O´Regan with 37 pts 2nd came Trevor Mattacks with 36 pts, beating Des Whetter and Vernon Stottor on handicap. The Sweep was won by Helen Mattacks Nearest the pin on Hole 3 Mike O´Regan Nearest the pin on Hole 4 Jim Brevitt. The evening was at Archibb restaurant in Pinatar Arena in San Pedro del Pinatar. Barry Fisher provided the music, donating his time for the Charity. As always the food and wine flowed and we danced the night away. A raffle was held and this brought our total to over €2300. This year, as last year, we are collecting to buy food for the needy families in Pilar de la Horadada in conjunction with Caritas. We
would like to thank everyone involved for their help and support. For those of you who do not know us, we play Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at Campoamor. If you would like to know more, or would like to join us for a game please contact, our Captain, Vernon on 646 416182.

T.M.G.S. @ Las Ramblas 18/11/15
The Vikings and Brits and a couple of Dutch guys formed a coalition of 48 players to invade Las Ramblas on this day, conditions were perfect for doing battle on this course that can be soul destroying at times. For those that didn’t play their best they could not blame the condition of the course, it was excellent! Neither could they blame the weather it was perfect with a comfortable temperature and absolutely no wind and all of this on the 18th of November, we must be in paradise. The Vikings were out in force, it must be too cold and wet up there in Scandinavia and they did put on a good show, but before we get into that everyone knows about the ravines and trees at this course, there is a tricky little par 3 on the back 9 that usually plays around 130m.It should be easy right! Well just in front of the green lies this Ravine that’s about 4m across, so what I hear you say, well Handicap Secretary Colin isn’t really a fan of this course and even less of this hole, sure enough his tee shot found the ravine having come up a meter short of being on the green. I can see it he says and before anyone can give advice about the dangers of his escapade he had descended down approx. 4m. First part of this operation completed, he is now stood on one leg at a 60º angle, fortunately it’s not the one that has a gammy knee, after 4 swings and obviously not going to score a Stableford point he had to ask for some help from his colleagues to extricate him from the said ravine. Moral of the story; it’s not worth it for a golf ball Colin or a point come to that. As mentioned earlier the Viking fraternity were out in force and could be excused for thinking that they had won todays Stableford battle.
However they had forgotten about a certain battle at a town called Hauho way back in 1050 when after several Viking raids the Finns got Fed up and ran them out of town, well that’s just about what happened in our Silver category; Alex Alm (Viking) took 3rd place with 35 points, Sverre Sonesen must have thought that with 40 points that he had 1st place in the bag, but Finnish member Kari Huopalahti popped up with 42 points to keep the Vikings at bay. Bronze category saw the Brits doing their part in the battle, Karin Alm, yes wife of Viking Alex took 3rd place with 30 points, Las Ramblas resident Les Wilton entered the frame with 31 points and top spot went to English woman Pearl Sabine with 33 points. It was another Brit that kept the Vikings at bay in the Gold category with Ian Brown 1st. on 37 points followed by Lars Hagstrom 3 points back on 34 and in 3rd place was Norwegian Henning Kyvag with 33 points. N.T.P. Competition Sponsored By Colin Marsden; hole 6 Pearl Sabine, hole 10 Roger Nilsen, hole 12 Norbert Spaniol hole 14 John Hettrick. 4 players Roger Nilsen (2 x2 ) made a “2” this week and the pot of €40 was shared out equally. Our player of the month (October) was won by Roger Nilsen, his prize is a free round at Las Colinas on the 2nd December. Photo; Silver category winners with the Finn in the centre. If you are interested in taking part in this weekly battle being played out at various courses here on the Costa Blanca, you will find out more at www.tmgs.org of at our Facebook page Facebook/TMGSGOLF or send us a tweet @TMGSGOLF you can still call the Secretary on 661524101
LA MARINA GS - MIKE BARBER TROPHY
The location for the Mike Barber Trophy was at Vistabella Golf course. This beautiful trophy was presented to the club by the family of our late member who is still fondly remembered. Mike loved to play Texas Scramble and so a scramble it was. The wonderful November weather deserted us and the game was played in overcast conditions and it was pretty chilly at the start of the round. None of this affected play and there were only 2 points separating the teams in second to fifth places. This course is always in good condition and the greens were tricky to read however, there seemed to be a problem with actually getting tee shots onto the greens on the Par 3’s and only one prize was awarded today The results on the day were:Nearest the Pin Hole 8 Martin Reidy Fist place 47 pts Alan Craig, Sarah McCabe, Roger Honey and Jimmy Scott Second Place 42 pts Vic Smith, Carol Marriner,
Martin Reidy and Gerry McCabe Members made their way back to the La Marina Sports Complex where, following the wonderful food supplied by Paolo & Helena, and the delay (Martin!!!), the prizes were presented by the Captain. Our next games is at Vistabella on November 262th. when we shall be playing for the Barclays Construction Trophy. An entry sheet is on the notice board in the Social Centre or you can call our Secretary, Alan Craig on 634 347788 for full details about this game or any other topic concerning the Society.
San Miguel Golf Society at La Serena. November 18th, 2015
For the second week in a row SMGS members and guests travelled to Murcia’s coastal area, this week to play the very watery (only 16 holes where water is a feature!!), La Serena. With good course conditions overall, although greens a little slow and with nothing much in common with the practice putting area, the weather superb - a somewhat later start than normal so nice and warm - good scores were expected. As is often found here, Bronze category stableford returns are lower than Gold and Silver, and that was again the case, with the exception of an excellent round from Ray Ewins. SMGS’s Silver category in recent weeks has found some players present used to being in Gold, indicative of the number of newer members with relatively low handicaps playing. However, Theo Boelhouwer may well have taken the same position of 2nd if in his usual Gold category, and John Aitchison would most certainly have remained first, with his outstanding 40 points being the best score of the day. Playing some superb golf, John is clearly not missing (on the course) his mentor, coach, buggy driver and translator, Alan MacDonald, who is currently somewhat under the weather. We wish him a speedy recovery. At prize giving this Year’s Captain Barry Roehrig handed The Royal British Legion’s local Representative, Mick Reeves, two tins collected by the Society to be given to the legion to support its good work in assisting ex-servicemen. Mick expressed his thanks to SMGS, who in turn gave recognition to Tony Smale for his collection efforts, for yet another year’s poppy appeal donation to the charity. The day’s stableford competition results, by category and
in reverse o r d e r, were the following:
Bronze Category: 4th Marg Birtwistle (31 on CB), 3rd Chris Hamblett (31 on CB), 2nd Glen Rapley (33) and 1st Ray Ewins, just bettering his handicap with 37 points and a result in stark contrast to the last time we were here when he took the Abacus prize. Silver Category: 4th Ivan Hanak (35), 3rd Norman Cahill (37), 2nd Theo Boelhouwer (38) and 1st with the best score of the day, a winner last week and clearly in excellent form, John Aitchison, with a superb 40 points. Gold Category: 4th Paul Guest (35 on CB), 3rd John Osborne (36), 2nd Steve Fleet (38 on CB), and 1st, with the same score as Steve, and one which gets him back up to around the summit of the 2015/16 Order of Merit table, last year's OoM winner, Robin Eastman. The Abacus was won by John Haggart. Nearest the pins on the par 3’s (open to all) went to William Fenn (3), Humphrey Kelleher (9), Eva Pettersson (15) and Ray Ewins (17). Best guest prize went, unsurprisingly as it is his home course, to Mick Reeves (37). Our thanks go to the staff at La Serena golf course for their contribution to an enjoyable day. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Barry Roehrig a call on 966 731 033 to find out more about the society and its weekly golf get-togethers. Next week we will be at La Finca.
