Spain cocaine seizure: Drug disguised as wooden pallets

S p a n i s h police said on Friday they have seized 40 pallets made out of 1.4 tonnes of compressed cocaine that was made to look like wood that arrived on a shipping container from Colombia. T h e authorities arrested 12 people in Spain, Dubai and Britain as part of the operation, including two Colombian experts in using chemicals to process cocaine into different formats, police said in a statement. The shipping container laden with what appeared to be sacks of charcoal on wooden pallets arrived in the Mediterranean port of Valencia, Spain's secondbusiest port, on November 30. But a forensic examination found that the pallets were made of compressed cocaine powder made to look like wood, and some of the sacks contained cocaine disguised as charcoal. The authorities suspect the group used a charcoal company in Spain as a front to import the cocaine and

hide a lab where the drug was extracted f r o m pallets and charcoal, processed a n d repackaged f o r distribution a c r o s s Europe. Police in October seized 300 kilos of cocaine from a container loaded with pureed bananas that arrived from Costa Rica at the port of Valencia. Spain's close ties with its former colonies in Latin America have made it the main entry point used by drug smugglers to bring cocaine into Europe. Smugglers have used increasingly ingenious methods to get the drug past Spanish customs. In recent years police have found cocaine inside breast implants, a wig, a plaster cast encasing a man's broken leg as well as inside a 42-piece crockery set and hidden inside a banana shipment. thelocal.es

Spain: Gunmen entered embassy in Kabul after car bomb attack Afghan security personnel inspect the Spanish Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan, Saturday, Dec. 12, 2015. Explosions and gunfire rocked a diplomatic area of central Kabul overnight as security forces tried to flush out Taliban attackers who claimed responsibility for a deadly car bomb Friday. (AP Photo/Rahmat Gul) KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Attackers entered the Spanish Embassy in Kabul after a deadly car bombing in a diplomatic neighborhood of the Afghan capital, engaging in an hour-long shootout with security forces while staff hid in bunkers, the Spanish government said Saturday in an account of the attack a day earlier. Sediq Sediqqi, spokesman for the Afghan Interior Ministry, said four Afghan police officers and two others, including a foreigner, were killed in the attack that was claimed by the Taliban. Authorities in Madrid said two Spanish police officers were killed. The discrepancy could not immediately be clarified. According to a statement issued Saturday by Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy's office, a powerful car bomb exploded Friday evening near the embassy, "causing serious damage to the premises" and killing Deputy-Inspector Jorge Garcia Tudela and Isidro Gabino Sanmartin Hernandez who were guarding the compound. An hour-long shootout followed, the statement said. During the gun battle, three attackers entered the embassy compound while staff hid in two bunkers. They were released unharmed "after an intervention by Afghan and United States special forces units that lasted several hours," the statement said. "All details of the attack are under investigation, although a statement by the attackers said that the embassy was not the intended target of their attack," the Spanish government said. The incident caused confusion in Spain, as Rajoy initially insisted to reporters Friday on live TV just ahead of a campaign election rally that the embassy had not come under attack. View galleryAfghan security personnel inspect the Spanish Embassy … He also said the only Spaniard hurt was a slightly

wounded police officer who had been taken to a hospital but was expected to recover. Rajoy later acknowledged during the rally that a policeman died, and hours afterward the government announced the death of the second officer. There was no government confirmation until Saturday that the embassy grounds had been penetrated. Seven civilians and two policemen were wounded, Sediqqi said, adding that 12 foreign citizens were rescued by Afghan forces. Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesman for the Taliban, claimed responsibility for the attack in an email sent to media outlets. The attack took place in the Kabul district of Shir Pur, home to many foreign embassies, guesthouses and the homes of high-ranking government officials. It took local security forces more than 10 hours to bring the area back under control.

The Kabul attack came two days after another massive Taliban attack on the main airport in the southern city of Kandahar, which lasted more than 24 hours and killed more than 50 people. The casualties from the Kandahar attack, which ended Wednesday night, included 38 civilians, 10 Afghan soldiers and two police officers, according to the Ministry of Defense. Separately, a district chief was shot and killed by insurgents in the northern province of Baghlan, said Jawed Basharat, spokesman for the provincial police chief. Abdul Jabar, chief of the Borka district, came under attack on the main road near Puli Khumri, the provincial capital. Basharat said that Jabar's driver and two of his bodyguards were abducted by the insurgents and police forces were searching for them. No group has yet claimed responsibility for killing Jabar, but Taliban militants have increased their attacks recently on Afghan government officials and security forces. yahoo

Spain wants to make up for lost ground in renewable energy

In the wake of the historic climate treaty in Paris, Spain, a former global champion of renewable energy, wants to regain the ground it lost during the economic crisis when it reversed its policy slashing subsidies and decimating the sector. With roughly 300 days of sunshine per year and regions that receive strong winds, Spain was a world leader in 200708 in solar and wind power production, helped by generous state subsidies. But the sharp economic downturn that followed the collapse of a decade-long property bubble in 2008 put the brakes on the development of renewable energy as the government scaled back support. Jorge Puebla, a 41-year-old firefighter, suffered the fallout from his energy investment. "They ruined my life," the father of two told AFP. He and his wife had invested a million euros ($1.1 million dollars) in 2007 in a solar energy farm in the northeastern region of Castile and Leon. They borrowed 800,000 euros from a bank with Puebla's parents acting as the loan guarantors. Solar investors like Puebla were lured by a law passed under the Socialist government in power in 2007. It guaranteed producers a so-called solar tariff of as much as 44 cents per kilowatthour for their electricity for 25 years. At that rate the couple thought they could easily make their monthly loan

repayments of 8,400 euros. But the government did not keep its promise. Faced with a ballooning budget deficit, in 2011 it cut the subsidies that were intended to stimulate the growth of the renewable energy. The conservative Popular Party that swept to power at the end of 2011 made further cuts to the state aid. "Everything that existed disappeared from one day to the other," said Puebla. He now relies on help from his sister and three brothers to pay his loan. - Low energy Solar power farms have seen their revenues drop 15-50 percent due to the change in government policy, said Jose Donoso, the head of Spain's solar lobby group UNEF. The solar power sector has shed 35,000 jobs since 2008 and now employs just 5,000 people, he added. The government U-turn has been especially hard on the roughly 62,000 private investors like Puebla and it essentially stopped the solar power sector from expanding. Spain added just 22 megawatts of photovoltaics capacity last year, compared with 2,270 megawatts in Britain. Wind power has also stalled. The sector has lost half of its jobs in eight years and no new wind power capacity was added in 2015. "The change in regulations since 2008 was negative for the entire industry,"

FARC 'forced abortion' nurse arrested in Madrid legal resident

Madrid has been arrested after it transpired he forcibly terminated over 150 pregnancies of female fighters with the rebel army in his home country. Héctor Albeidis Arboleda Buitrago, 40, has been wanted by Interpol for forced abortions of FARC militants – some of them mere teenagers and some of whom died as a result of the non-consented procedure – because their pregnancy and eventual motherhood would have had negative consequences for their ability to fight, in the guerrillas' view. Known within the FARC as El Enfermero, or 'The Nurse', Arboleda Buitrago has been taken into custody by the Guardia Civil in the Spanish capital and inquiries have been launched to find out whether he is a

in Madrid. If he is not, he will be deported immediately to Colombia, but the accused is likely to have to leave the country anyway since his native land has called for his ex tradition for trial. According to the national director for public safety and the prosecution in Colombia, Luis González León, Arboleda carried out the abortions over a 15-year period, mostly in remote rural areas in the west and centre of the country. The women who reported their ordeal describe it as 'absolute torture', both physically and emotionally, which left them with psychological scarring in many cases and serious injuries in others, which have led to gynaecological problems and infertility among many of them – and several of the victims died as a direct result of the unregulated practice. Investigations have been ongoing for several months into sexual violence and violation of sexual freedoms

said Carlos Garcia, a renewable energy specialist at the IE Business School in Madrid. He points the finger at "pressure" from traditional energy producers that rely on coal, gas, oil and nuclear power to "stop the development of renewables". It is not just small and medium-sized businesses that are suffering. Spain's flagship renewable energy giant Abengoa which employs more than 27,000 people worldwide is teetering on the edge of bankruptcy. While the loss of subsidies is not the main cause of its troubles, experts say it has not helped. “2015 marks the lowest point in the development of renewables in the past 20 years in Spain,” said Spanish Wind Energy Association policy director Heikki Willstedt. “Spain must make up for lost time and fulfil its goals for 2020,” she added. Willstedt recalled that Spain is committed to meeting 20 percent of its energy needs through renewables by 2020, compared to the current 15 percent. The perpetrated by the FARC, and revealed that female members of the rebel army relied upon their male colleagues to supply them with contraception. If any of the women refused to abort and insisted on carrying their child, they were likely to face a death sentence – unless they were the wives or girlfriends of senior commanders, since these were offered greater privileges than those further down the hierarchy. Some women say they were forced to undergo multiple abortions with no proper medical precautions taken, and in the middle of a rainforest – one of whom revealed five of her pregnancies had been terminated against her wishes. After more than 50 years of violence

euro

government which emerges following the general election on December 20 must change Spain’s renewable energy policies, added Garcia. Spain’s ruling conservative Popular Party has presented proposals to restart the wind power sector but has not yet outlined its plans for solar energy. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy vowed at the World Climate Change Conference 2015 (COP21) in Paris on November 30 to table a “law on climate change” if he is re-elected, after having complained for a long time that renewable energy is too expensive. Spain has maintained companies “with significant know how” in the area such as Gamesa which survived the economic downturn by expanding abroad, mainly in Latin America, said Garcia. The country is still the fifth largest producer in the world of wind power and the third biggest exporter. thelocal.es in Colombia, peace talks between the government and the FARC have been under way in the Cuban capital, La Habana, for the past three years and appears to have been making progress. The rebels started out their violent reign in a bid to install a Marxist society in Colombia, ending up with a stronghold of territory in the country larger than Switzerland, and in recent times has become more and more involved in bloodthirsty and lucrative cocaine-trafficking activities. Rebel conflict in Colombia has led to the deaths of nearly a quarter of a million people, mainly civilians. http://www.thinkspain.com/

Record-breaking 10,000 Santas run through Madrid

ort

Merry Christmas Sunday 6th December saw the annual Santa Walk organized by Maria and the Pink Ladies/ Panthers to raise money for the AECC, early detection of cancer here in Spain. A fantastic amount of money was raised, nearing one thousand euros. Over 120 entrants gathered at Zenia Boulevard from 10am, with everyone in Santa fancy dress, even the doggies, and listening to Christmas carols sung by TAABS, making it a very christmassy start to the festive season. The walk started with a circuit of the Boulevard led by Maria honking her horn, then it was out on to the local roads to complete the 5km circuit. The volunteer marshals and local police did an outstanding job keeping all the walkers on the right road and many of the locals took time to admire the sea of Santas, put money in the buckets and cheer the crowd on their way. On their return the walkers were greeted by some great music from Simon Morton of Sunshine FM and more Christmas carols sung by TAABS. In addition to the 5€ for registration, walkers brought along dried and tinned food items to help the Torrevieja based homeless charity, Reach Out.

Ten thousand runners dressed up as Santa Claus ran through the centre of Madrid on Saturday in the 4th official Santa Claus race. There was a record turn-out for this year's event, with women making up 60% of the runners. The mass of runners, each in the traditional Santa Claus outfit, complete with hat, that was handed out at registration, ran 5.5km through the streets around the Santiago Bernabéu stadium. Álvaro Lozano from Madrid, who was third in 2014, won the men's race in a time of 17:31 minutes and crossed the finishing line eight full seconds ahead of Miguel Arcones, who came second for the second consecutive year. David Colisa joined them on the podium with a time of 17:54. Beatriz Esteban was the quickest of the six thousand women, crossing the line in a time of 20:02, almost a minute and a half ahead of the second-placed Adriana Charry (21:24), whilst Elena Esteban, like last year, took the third place on the podium with a time of 21:54. The handbike race was won by Vicente Yangüez in a time of 12:23, and the children's race was won by Carlota Jouron, in a time of 22:17. At 9am a sleigh, ridden by yet another Santa Claus, opened the race, which already made the Guinness Book of Records last year with 5,173 registered runners reaching the finishing line. This year it broke its own record by a huge margin and established itself as the world's undisputed leader in Santa Claus races. The previous holder of the Guinness record for people dressed as Santa Claus competing in a running race was held by the Irish town of Dundalk, with 4,961 runners dressed as the traditional Christmas character. thinkspain.com

A happy ending for Lady Edith… ‘I hate goodbyes’, ‘Good things come to an end’ and ‘We’ve been together a long time’ are some of the poignant lines from this final, feature-length, episode of TV’s most famous period drama. They couldn’t be more appropriate – it’s all about bidding a heartfelt farewell to the characters we’ve known and loved (and sometimes loved to hate). Set in the summer of 1925 and then a magical New Year’s Eve, this swansong has lovely nods to characters and plots from the past and a great guest role for Patricia Hodge as Bertie’s mum. But can Edith find happiness and will Baby Bates ever arrive? Guaranteed to leave you with a smile, and a few tears.

Top 7 Christmas beauty tips How to look beautiful at Christmas

Whether you’re driving home for Christmas to see family, or heading out to glitzy parties to see old friends over the festive period, no doubt you’ll want to look your best. With these top seven Christmas beauty tips you’ll be looking gorgeous for those under-the-mistletoe moments.

Tired eyes

All those nights partying to Mariah Carey and Wham! is bound to leave even young eyes looking tired. To make sure you stay looking bright and alert over Christmas give yourself a little eye massage to get rid of puffy eyes. Begin at the corner of one of your eyes and work your way up, between your brow bone and your eye, rubbing as you go until you reach the outer edge of your eye. Repeat along your lower lash line. Also, be careful about where you apply your blusher as applying it too high can make you look tired.

Party makeup

Party make-up has to be right if you want to look beautiful at Christmas. The key to looking great for your Christmas party is to put on your eye shadow first. Then apply your foundation and any other make-up you want to wear. This way you know that any loose eye shadow won’t fall in those places you don’t want it.

Flat stomach

For most of us, a flat, washboard stomach is like the elixir of life – a distant, priceless dream that will never become a reality. Yet we have a few tricks that might make that flat tummy achievable. Firstly, try taking peppermint capsules or aloe vera juice. Each do a fantastic job in supporting the digestive system and both can help you achieve a flat stomach by preventing bloating. So that you can look amazing in your Christmas outfit, you can also cut out certain foods that can cause excessive gas and bloating. Try to limit things that contain refined sugar, or fermented products like cheese and alcohol.

Simple up ‘do

Christmas is such a frantic time that it can be difficult to find the energy to fuss over hair styles. Yet if you want to look fantastic then one of the best beauty tips you can master is the art of simple hairdos. If you want to put your hair up, try twisting one section from the front of your hair; once twisted pin into place at the back of your head. Repeat with the other side. Then take the remainder of your hair and tie a messy bun. This look is elegant, simple and more importantly quick.

Glittery lips

Have a great time

Nothing says Christmas like glitter, and slathering some sparkly goodness on your pout will definitely bring you some Christmas cheer this year. To master the look, line your lips with a light coloured lip pencil and add foundation to the corners of your mouth. Then apply a creamy lipstick using a lip brush before using a flat brush to add on your glitter. You can finish with a gloss. To glam up your lips even more add some clear lip gloss. The one thing to bear in mind if you’re considering having glittery lips for a Christmas do is that drinking, eating and kissing may be off limits; so weigh up your priorities before donning a glitter pout.

Combat alcohol

Although you may like sipping a tasty mojito or cosmopolitan, your skin doesn’t. Alcohol dehydrates you and can leave your skin dry, grey and dull. To make sure your skin glows despite the endless flow of alcohol over the festive period your moisturiser won’t be enough. Instead invest in some cleansing milks that contain hylauronic acid. You could also apply a brightening face mask; look for ones that contain alpha-hydroxy acids, as this natural acid helps to destroy dead skin skills, firm up skin and moisturize.

We’re about to reveal one of the best beauty Christmas tips of all time, so sit comfortably and listen up. Here it is: enjoy yourself. It sounds so simple, but whatever you’re up to this Christmas, make sure you spend time with people you like and spend at least some time with people who make you feel good about yourself. Having a great time is the perfect beauty treatment because when you’re having a great time it shows: your skin glows, your eyes brighten and everyone warms to you and wants to spend time with you.

Spain we use the word Pascuas, in the plural, to refer to the days that revolve around Christmas, the Christian commemoration of the birth of Jesus. For many, Christmas is a holiday for religious reflection, while for others it’s simply a time for celebrating a joyful holiday with the family. The Christmas holidays in Spain begins on December 24th, Christmas Eve Day, then it continues through Christmas Day (December 25th), the day of los Santos Inocentes (Innocent Saint’s Day, December 28th), New Year’s Eve (December 31st), and finally crescendos into its grand finale on King’s Day Eve (January 5th) and King’s Day (January 6th). During this time of year, the homes and streets of Spain are filled with decorative elements that remind us that the holidays are here. Globalization, an unstoppable and unavoidable phenomenon, has caused Spaniards to assimilate certain customs, especially related to decorative aspects, which although are foreign have absorbed many Hispanic elements. The first thing we observe in Spain during the holiday season is the large number of lights that decorate the streets of the towns and cities. In some areas, festive decor is not limited to just lighting; strategically placed loud speakers, hidden from view as well as possible, may also fill the holiday atmosphere with Christmas carols. Another must-have feature of the season is the omnipresent Christmas flower the poinsettia, which in warm-climate areas, such as in the south of the peninsula, the coast of Levante or in the Canary Islands, grows to considerable size. When we get home and open the door, the first

thing that catches our attention is the tray on the table in the entrance, full of sweets that are customary at this time of year: alfores (an almond and honey confection), marzipan, sugared almonds, candied fruit, and of course the fundamental varieties of turron: the hard and soft types and perhaps some of the more innovative and tantalizing forms we’ve found on supermarket shelves. In some small cities and towns, this temptingly sweet treat can even be found on offer in banks and in some stores… so that sweet tooths can sweeten their wait by snacking on a little holiday flavor. In one corner of the living room, the kids have begun installing the nativity scene, a type of panoramic reproduction of the setting of Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem. The nativity scene generally features a series of elements and figures (some scenes also reflect a certain custom or local tradition): the manger with figurines of Joseph, the Virgin Mary, the baby Jesus in his straw bed flanked by a mule and an ox, and an angel above it all announcing the birth of Jesus to the shepherds. It’s also important that the castle of King Herodias (the bad guy) appear in the distance. The castle can be made of cork or wood painted to look like stone, women washing clothes and a person fishing may stand next to an aluminum foil river…

Happy New Year

A road runs next to the river (perhaps made of bread crumbs) on which the three wise men make their way towards the manger. The kids are in charge of moving the magi forward a little bit each day until the night of January 5th, when they finally reach the stable where the sacred family is. In Catalonia and Valencia, an absolutely essential nativity scene figure is one known as the Caganer: a person dressed in traditional rustic attire who is, hidden in some corner of the scene, crouched down responding to nature’s call. Finding him is a challenge for observers, and the tradition, dating back to the 18th century, probably symbolizes the fertilization of the earth, converting him into a symbol of good luck, his absence of which provokes the opposite. The Christmas tree has also become widely popular, which is decorated with colorful ornaments, lights and garland and placed in a lighted corner of the Spanish living room. This tree was originally a symbol of fertility in Northern Europe. Today however, most homes have one (a real tree or a more or less realistic imitation). Balconies, windows, and terraces are decorated with figures of Papá Noel (Santa Claus, another holiday season import), the three kings, or in the Basque country and Navarra, the Olentzero, a coal merchant who has emerged from the forest to bring gifts to the children. One peculiar Spanish Christmas decoration is Serving the Coast and Inland for over 10 Years produced on December 28th, Innocent Saints Day (the equivalent to April Fool’s Day in many cultures). On this day, it seems you need eyes in the back of your head, as most likely someone is going to try to pin a paper cut-out of a man onto your back: it’s the most traditional of Manufacturers & Installers practical jokes, and the of Insect Screens, paper doll is an icon of Spanish humor. one grape per bell chime) are the most striking characteristic of this fiesta. Finally, on the night of January 5th, shoes that have been well cleaned sit next to the windows of Spanish homes, awaiting the arrival of Melchor, Gaspar and Baltasar (the three wise men), who will bring toys to the good kids and coal (made of sugar) to the naughty ones. A Cabalgata de Reyes (wise men parade) is celebrated in almost all Spanish cities and towns on the day of the fifth, where children and parents/ grandparents wait in wide-eyed anticipation as the three wise men approach, bringing presents that each child has requested in a letter. After a sleepless night and a Three Kings Day full of children running around playing with their new gifts, it’s time to return to the old daily Reforms grind. Christmas Trees

Christmas has been around for a good few years now; with plenty of myths and fun facts doing the rounds at the same time. In 1840; Victoria’s Prince Albert supposedly first brought a Christmas tree into the house or rather palace. In fact it was 40 years earlier that Queen Charlotte the German wife of King George III potted up a yew tree and displayed it in the largest room at Queens Lodge Windsor. She was carrying on a tradition brought over from Germany of hanging and decorating evergreen boughs around the house and decided for Christmas 1840 to ‘Go Large!’ The tree was decorated, hung with goodies and gifts then lit with wax candles. At the childrens’ party she held; all the little guests were given beautiful and tasty treats off the tree. After that it became quite the thing in high society to bring a tree into the house at Christmas. Lord Kenyon in 1802 wrote in his diary that he was off to buy candles for his tree. In 1804 another diary entry by the Fifth Earl of Bristol mentioned setting a tree up for his children in Suffolk. Then in 1807 the

Prime Minister of Britain; the Duke of Portland mentioned bringing a tree in for a ‘juvenile’ party. In 1829 Charles Greville spent Christmas at the home of the Fifth Earl of Cowper and his wife Lady Emily. Greville wrote that on a long table covered with pink satin; Lady Emily had placed three trees in large pots one for each of their children. Presents were laid underneath suitable for each child; toys, books, gloves, handkerchiefs with not an Xbox in sight. It was all very pretty he noted. Then after Prince Albert first imported his Christmas trees to Windsor Palace in 1840; the periodicals of the time such as The Illustrated London News would studiously report and picture the trees and decorations in the Royal Palaces of England. After that the practice quickly spread across Britain. In 1848 the London News picture of the tree was reprinted in a magazine in republican America, they removed Queen Victoria’s crown and cut off Albert’s moustache to make it more American and less royal. The first tree inside a house was reputedly done in northern

A US town has rejected plans for solar panels amid fears they would ‘suck up all the energy from the sun’

A US town has rejected a proposal for a solar farm following public concerns. Members of the public in Woodland, North Carolina, expressed their fear and mistrust at the proposal to allow Strata Solar Company to build a solar farm off Highway 258. During the Woodland Town Council meeting, one local man, Bobby Mann, said solar farms would suck up all the energy from the sun and businesses would not go to Woodland, the Roanoke-Chowan News Herald reported. Jane Mann, a retired science teacher, said she was concerned the panels would prevent plants in the area from photosynthesizing, stopping them from growing. Ms Mann said she had seen areas near solar panels where plants are brown and dead because they did not get enough sunlight.

She also questioned the high number of cancer deaths in the area, saying no one could tell her solar panels didn't cause cancer. The area around Woodland is a popular choice because it has an electrical substation allowing the panels to be hooked up to the national grid. A spokesperson for Strata told the meeting: "There are no negative impacts. A solar farm is a wonderful use for a property like this." They added: "The panels don't draw additional sunlight." The council voted three to one against rezoning the land and later voted for a moratorium on future solar farms. Speaking after the COP-21 summit on climate change in Paris pledged to limit global warming below the threshold of 2°c, Pope Francis said the plan will require "a concerted and generous commitment" from everyone. Experts said a move towards renewable power, with investment in wind and solar energy, will be required to cut down on emissions. http://uk.businessinsider.com/

Germany by Martin Luther the religious reformer way back in 1536. Walking at night through the forest he saw hundred of stars glinting between the boughs of a fir tree which somehow reminded him of Jesus descending from heaven. He was so moved that he killed the tree and placed it decorated in his house for his children to enjoy. In 1584, it’s recorded that across the German border in Riga, Latvia; a decorated tree was placed in the Square where young men and fair maidens danced around it before setting it alight. In 1570 in the Guild House of Bremen a tree was decorated with paper flowers, apples, nuts and of course pretzels. Germany really was the start of all things Christmas tree and by 1605 decorated trees for found across Germany. German glass makers’ made beautiful baubles for trees and tinsel was invented by beating strips of silver wafer thin. In northern Europe candles are often still used for decorating trees. There were

some horrific fires caused by candles in trees including in 1885; an entire Chicago hospital burnt to the ground. In 1895 a telephonist called Ralph Morris invented the first electric Christmas lights and things got a whole lot safer. There’s even a Guinness World record for the largest amount of lights placed on a single tree; in 2010 194,672 lights were put on a tree in Malmedy, Belgium. That record was mega busted a year later in Canberra Australia when the record rose to 331,038. Shijiao in China is the favoured destination for recycling Christmas lights with about 10,000 tonnes going there every year. Happy Christmas to all Sol Times readers!

New Year's Eve Facts And Trivia: Fun Things To Know About The Holiday

New Year’s Eve is one of the favorite celebration days for many people. Parties aside, the impending New Year typically brings hope for a more prosperous and happy 365 days. There are also some fun facts and trivia associated with the celebration. Check them out below, courtesy of the Examiner and Patch. The first New Year was celebrated 4,000 years by the ancient Babylonians. It’s tradition to ring in New Year’s with family and friends because the first people you see will either give

you good luck or bad luck. So make sure to keep friends close and foes very far away More vehicles are stolen on New Year’s Day than any other holiday, statistics from the National Insurance Crime Bureau revealed. The top three places to celebrate New Year’s Eve are Las Vegas, Disney World and of course, New York City. Internationally, one of the biggest celebrations is in Sydney, Australia. More than 80,000 fireworks are set off from Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Time Square New Year's Eve Ball was first dropped in 1907 after there was a fireworks ban. Back then, a 700-pound ball embellished with 25-watt bulbs made of iron and wood was dropped. Now, however, it weighs 11,875 pounds, is 12 feet in diameter and is adorned with 2,668 Waterford crystals. The tradition has continued in Times Square, except for in 1942 and 1943. The ball was not lowered because of wartime restrictions. In Italy, people wear red underwear on New Year’s Day to bring good luck all year long. In Colombia, Cuba and Puerto Rico, some families stuff a large doll, which is called Mr. Old Year, with memories from the past year. They also dress him in clothes from the outgoing year. At midnight, he is set ablaze, thus burning away the bad memories.

Strictly semi final

This was, I have to say, very much a show of two halves. The first dances of all except Jay left much to be desired whereas the second half was a totally different ballgame with 3 performers certain for the final in my opinion. Opening the show this week were Katie Derham and Anton with a Charleston. With so many superb charleston routines having been danced this year, this was an ‘oh dear!’ moment. I didn’t like the choreography which I found boring, and with non existent foot swivels, a full section out of time with her partner this left much to be desired. I gave her 5 and the judges bottom place with 25. Next were Jay McGuinness and Aliona with a Viennese Waltz. Another beautiful performance from Jay where he created the atmosphere immediately from the onset. I would just love to see him breathe more life into his upper body otherwise a faultless performance. I awarded him 9 and the judges undermarked on 34. Georgia May Foote and Giovanni then danced a Cha Cha Cha. Unfortunately Georgia was sick for 3 days this week and unfortunately this dance suffered as a consequence. Her weight was too far back and her Cha Cha action as a result was very plonky. However for the amount of training not a bad try. I gave her 7 and the judges 33. Anita Rani and Gleb then danced a Foxtrot. With nice smooth characterisation this ended up being more an American Smooth than Foxtrot with too much out of hold. Her feet really are awful and unfortunately the choreography once again highlighted her weakness. I gave her 7 and the judges 32. Closing the first dance was Kellie Bright and Kevin with a Rumba. The piece of music was extremely slow and is difficult enough for a professional dancer to control, unfortunately Kellie didn’t manage it and overbalanced several times within the choreography. Her Rumba leg action was very good and I think given a proper piece of Rumba music would have scored much

higher. I awarded her 8 and the judge 34. Katie and Anton returned for their second dance which was a Waltz. Much better than her Charleston as she is certainly in safe hands with Anton in the Ballroom genre. I found this dance very patchy, some parts like the pivot turns were excellent and then other parts she was so off balance Anton was holding her up. I awarded her 8 and the judges 31. A Charleston treat was next with Jay and Aliona. Flashback to the 1920s, Jay was so laid back and relaxed in this number it was a dream to watch. A well deserved 10 and the judges undermarking again on 37. Georgia and Giovanni then danced a Viennese Waltz. This was beautifully accented full of Viennese content with pivots, natural and reverse turns and fleckerls. Superb performance and deserved another 10 and judges 38. Following were Anita and Gleb an a Salsa. What a piece of awful music! yet again a danced ruined by inappropriate music. There were some very clever lifts and tricks here but it wasn’t Salsa and the bit evident was not very well danced. A disappointing 7 and judges 32. Closing the show were Kellie and Kevin with their American Smooth. A superb characterisation that was so lyrical soft and light. Another great performance move over Fred and Ginger! Another 10 with 39 from the judges. So from the second dances I think you can see

It’s good luck to eat foods like black eyed peas, ham and cabbage because it is thought they bring prosperity. But if you want to have a happy new year, don’t eat lobster or chicken. Lobsters can move backward and chickens can scratch in reverse, so it is thought these foods could bring a reversal of fortune. Chinese New Year is celebrated the second full moon after the winter solstice. Jewish New Year is called Rosh Hashanah. Apples and honey are traditionally eaten. In ancient Rome the new year began on March 1. The traditional New Year’s song, “Auld Lang Syne,” means, “times gone by.” The top 10 resolutions are usually to lose weight, eat more healthily, exercise more, stop smoking, stick to a budget, save money, get more organized, be more patient, find a better job and to just be a better person over all. Using a baby to signify the New Year began in ancient Greece around 600 B.C. http://www.ibtimes.com/

my top 3 dancers with Anita taking the fourth place although she is not in the same class as the others. This is going to be a humdinger of a final! It will be extremely close that is unless the public eject yet another finalist beforehand! I have to say though that I have found the judges scoring rather odd this year. Some of the celebrities getting consistently higher scores than they deserved and others consistently low. I believe the only true scoring this year has come from Craig. I’m normally the same score or one either way from him. Favouritism this year has been with Katie and underscoring Jay consistently. There is no comparison between these two dancers. In the bottom two were Anita and Katie with Anita being ejected after a 3 to 1 verdict from the dance off (I would have had Anita into the final). For me it is still between Jay and Georgia. I love Kellie too but don’t just feel she has the technical know how of the other 2. All could change though it all depends on the dances and that all important show dance. I can’t wait for next week. Make sure to tune in to see who will lift that coveted glitter ball trophy this year? We have just one more week of classes too before the Christmas break but we will be back 5 January with our new courses. Come and join us lose weight meet some great new friends and keep fit in 2016! In the meantime Keep dancing!

Institute’s foreclosure statistics for the third quarter of 2015, the number of defaults on home mortgage loans in Spain are easing off. The statistical agency reported that from July to September the number of foreclosures initiated on main residences of individuals reached a total of 5,959, which is 12.4% less than in the same period of 2014 and 31.3% less than in the previous quarter. The agency also pointed out that not every foreclosure procedure ends with an eviction. During the third quarter of 2015 a total of 11,584 foreclosure procedures were initiated on dwellings, representing a decline of 15.6% year-on-year and a decline of 32.7% quarter-on-quarter. Some 7,590 of these procedures related to the homes of individuals (5,959 were

Of the foreclosures initiated on dwellings during the third quarter of the year, 13.9% were on new dwellings and 86.1% were on second hand homes, representing declines of 27.8% and 13.3%, respectively, over the previous year. By region, those registering the greatest number of foreclosure proceedings on housing in the third quarter of 2015 were Andalucía (2,984), Valencia (2,339) and Catalonia (2,022), while in contrast, the regions to register the lowest numbers of foreclosures in this period were the Basque Country and Navarra (both with 63) and Asturias (67). kyero.com

Spanish House Prices Rose by 1.9% Y-o-Y in November

The average price of housing in Spain registered an increase of 1.9% in November, compared with the same period in 2014, according to the latest IMIE General and Large Markets Index published by property appraisal company, Tinsa. This positive evolution is influenced by an atypical decline in the average price recorded in November 2014 which was subsequently corrected. This has intensified the year-on-year comparison, although the average price has maintained and even decreased slightly in November compared with the previous month, consistent with the stabilisation process. Tinsa’s IMIE Index is based on the appraisals of finished housing (new and used) carried out by the company, and calculated using the collated monthly variations in the value per square metre of housing, compared to their 2001 values. According to the categories analysed by the appraisal company, the “Capitals and Major Cities” registered the greatest year-on-year increase in November, of 3%, followed by the “Metropolitan Areas” and the “Mediterranean Coast”, which both registered an increase of 1.4%. The smaller towns, grouped in the “Other Municipalities” category, recorded a rise of 1.3% in their average house

Ski Season Kicks Off With Increases in Holiday Rental Prices As the ski season in Spain begins, rental prices for holiday accommodations located closest to the country’s most popular ski stations have risen substantially, according to a recent study carried out by holiday home rental website, Rentalia. Data from the portal’s study revealed that renting an apartment for five people less than half an hour’s drive from the most popular

ski areas costs an average of 1,015 euros per week, which represents an increase of 12.5% over the prices of last year. A spokesman for the rental portal said that there are great expectations for the rental occupancy rates during the ski season in both Spain and other nearby ski resorts, and that this has provoked the increase in prices for this season. According to the study, rental prices vary greatly depending on the location of the resort. Holiday homes situated near the Sierra Nevada (Granada), for example, are

priced at an average of 1,407 euros per week, and top the ranking, after prices there increased by almost 15% year-on-year. In second place on the ranking stands the independent principality of Andorra, situated between France and Spain in the Pyrenees mountains, where rental prices are around 1,155 euros per week, followed by: Baqueira Beret (located in the Aran Valley, Lleida), at a weekly cost of 1,032 euros (+8.4% y-o-y); Formigal (Huesca), at 994 euros (+18%), and Cerler (Huesca), with an average price of 934 euros per week (+6.7% y-o-y). In contrast, the most affordable ski resort on the ranking is Candanchú (Huesca), where holiday home rentals cost nearly half the price of those in the Sierra Nevada, at an average of 710 euros per week (+16% over last year), which is also similar to the cost of rental accommodations close to the ski resort of Astún (Jaca, Huesca). Idealista.com reported that, according to Rentalia, 76.5% of the rental accommodations close to the main ski resorts are apartments and studios, while 23.5% of them are houses and chalets. Some 58% of these rentals offer parking, 43% have a fireplace, and almost 25% of them allow the traveller to bring their pet. kyero.com

prices compared to a year earlier, while the “Balearic and Canary Islands” remained stable with a slight increase of just 0.2% compared to November 2014. In the period from January to November, the “Mediterranean Coast” is the area where values have recovered most, accumulating an increase of 2.6%, followed by slight improvements in the “Balearic and Canary Islands” (+1.4%) and the “Capitals and Major Cities” (+0.6%). The Spanish overall average recorded a slight decline of -0.2% in the eleven month period, while the “Metropolitan Areas” and “Other Municipalities” registered cumulative declines of -1.6% and -2.2%, respectively. Since the peak values recorded at the height of the property boom, the average price of housing in Spain has fallen by 41.3%. The area to register the greatest decline in values has been the “Mediterranean Coast”, where average prices have fallen by 48.2%, followed by the “Capitals and Major Cities” (-44.9%), and the “Metropolitan Areas” (-43.9%), while the accumulated decline in the “Balearic and Canary Islands” since the peak values now stands at -30.1% and for the “Other Municipalities” the accumulated decline is -36.7%. kyero.com

Not so Familia: visit Antoni Gaudí’s first project just outside Barcelona The Nau Gaudí, 30km from Barcelona, was the first building designed by the great Catalan architect, when he was just 26. Today its elegant interior showcases contemporary art Interior of the wood-framed Nau Gaudí building, in Mataró, Spain, which was commissioned when Antoni Gaudí was still a student. Leave the rest of the world queuing to see the Sagrada Família, Casa Batlló or one of the other works of the great Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí and take a train 30km north to the coastal town of Mataró, to see where it all began. The Nau Gaudí, commissioned by the local textile workers’ co-op when he was still a student, is Gaudi’s first work. It is also one of the few projects not commissioned by the Catholic church or a wealthy patron. Though a simple wood-framed warehouse designed for bleaching cotton, it has an elegant structure based on a parabolic arch, the hallmark of Gaudí’s later work, developed to perfection in the Palau Guëll mansion and La Pedrera apartment building. In the courtyard, the brick arches and tiling of the charming, circular service building are a foretaste of the mudejar-style Casa Vicens, the first home Gaudí designed. With the decline of the local textile industry, the Nau fell into disrepair until work

began on refurbishing it in 2002, to mark the 150th anniversary of the architect’s birth. It is now an art gallery displaying contemporary Catalan art from the collection of Llluís Bassat, who made his fortune in advertising. However, until January 2016, the Nau Gaudí is presenting an extraordinary exhibition of non-conformist Russian art from the1960s and 70s, works that are rarely seen because almost all are in the hands of private collectors. • bassatgaudimataro.ca, free, open Tues-Sat 5pm8pm, Sun 11am-2pm. Spain’s Housing Sector Set to Boost GDP Growth For First Time Since 2007

According to the Spain Real Estate Outlook report for the second half of 2015, published by BBVA Research, “the recovery of real estate demand is encouraging building activity at a time when the supply overhang is being cleared. The pattern of supply and demand is contributing to the gradual stabilisation of residential prices, which have been showing levels of appreciation since mid 2015 in all the regions.” The organisation’s report estimates that, following the years of the crisis, when the sector suffered intensely, the real estate sector in Spain will once again, in 2015, contribute positively to GDP growth, which has not been the case since 2007. Specifically, it will account for 0.2% of the 3.2% growth forecast for Spain for the whole of 2015. The report estimates that the good news for the sector will come from all sides, with increases in sales, domestic and foreign demand, average house prices, the number of permits for new builds, as well as the number of new mortgage loans, and the BBVA also mentioned other variables such as the gradual recovery of employment, which translates into more disposable income for families, the 40% adjustment in house prices since the start of the crisis, the improvement in consumer confidence and a climate of low interest rates. The housing market has already registered six consecutive quarters of growth. However, despite these encouraging figures, analysts from BBVA indicated that a situation of “normalisation” will not be achieved until 2016, since the market started from a point of very strong adjustment, due to an accumulated surplus and the high indebtedness of companies. For 2015, BBVA estimates that over 400,000 housing transactions will be closed, and that in 2016 this figure will increase by around 10%. Head of Research for BBVA, Ignacio San Marín, said that house prices have increased in all parts of the country in the second half of the year, with the average price increasing by 1.4% in the third quarter, compared with the same period of the previous year, which he says reflects a change in trend and predicts that prices will rise, although only slightly above inflation, at around 2%, until 2017. However, El Economista reported that there are significant differences between the regions. In Madrid and the Balearic Islands, for example, the increase in house prices is triple that of Asturias, Extremadura or Navarra. Moreover, with regard to sales and demand, regions such as Madrid, Navarra and the Basque Country are already at levels of normalisation, while others such as Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha or Galicia are still in an adjustment phase. Given these differences, BBVA expects that in the long term prices will rise where there is more GDP growth in relation to the population, which is where employment and disposable income will grow most, while among the influencing factors in the short term will be the pressure of foreign demand in the most touristic regions. FOR BUSINESS Sparks fly over corruption during Spanish TV election debate

Leaders of four Spanish parties locked in a tight race to win this month’s general election traded angry accusations over corruption and the economy on Monday in a lively debate that Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy again chose to stay away from. Rajoy’s People’s Party (PP) and Pedro Sanchez’s Socialists are seeing their decades-old hold on power threatened by the rise of two new parties, the liberal Ciudadanos (Citizens) party and left-wing Podemos (“We can”) after years of economic crisis. An official poll published last week showed the PP getting most votes in the Dec. 20 election but falling well short of a

majority in parliament. The polls show Ciudadanos, which espouses business-friendly, centrist policies, vying with the Socialists to be the second force in Spanish politics. If confirmed on Dec. 20, Spain could be facing a minority or a coalition government. For the second time in a week, Rajoy stayed away from a televised debate with the leaders of the other three parties. But, in contrast with last week’s debate when organizers left an empty podium for Rajoy, the prime minister this time sent his deputy Soraya Saenz de Santamaria. Sparks flew when the two-hour debate turned to corruption, which polls show is Spaniards’ greatest concern after unemployment, which is running at more than 20 percent. Fighting off attacks from the other leaders about alleged cases of corruption in the PP, Saenz de Santamaria said: “Cases have been prosecuted (and) justice has been allowed to act.” Spain’s High Court said in May six people would go on trial after an investigation into an alleged slush fund within the PP. Rodrigo Rato, a former International Monetary Fund chief and former PP deputy prime minister, has also been caught up in several judicial probes. Rajoy’s absence drew sarcasm from his rivals. Pablo Iglesias, leader of Podemos which opposes the austerity policies the PP has imposed since the collapse of a property boom in 2008 imploded Spain’s economy, said it was a shame Rajoy “isn’t with us, but I am sure he will be interested by the debate.” Saenz de Santamaria retorted the PP was a team that shared responsibility. Rajoy will hold a one-on-one debate with the Socialists’ Sanchez next week. The economy is now strengthening and the PP said this would enable them to cut income tax if re-elected while continuing to reduce the budget deficit. Rajoy, 60, emphasizes his experience compared with his rivals, aged in their 30s and 40s. Sanchez said that if he became prime minister, he would keep the goal of a 1 percent of GDP budget deficit at the end of the next four-year parliament, but would renegotiate with the European Commission the path for getting there. Spain forecasts a deficit of 4.2 percent this year. Iglesias, whose party is running fourth in the polls, said he would make banks that had received state aid pay a “solidarity tax” and he also backed a tax on share, bond and derivative trades. http://www.reuters.com/

Happy Birthday To You copyright case settled

A legal dispute over copyright fees for the song Happy Birthday To You has been settled out of court. The music company Warner/Chappell had claimed the rights to the song but earlier this year a judge ruled that the lyrics could be used without the need to pay royalties. A group of artists and filmmakers had sought to claim back the money collected by the firm over the years. The terms of the agreement have not been revealed. Warner/Chappell is thought to have made $2m (£1.3m) a year by charging every time the song was used in a film, television episode, advertisement or other public performance. It acquired the copyright

in 1988 but a judge ruled it was only granted for specific arrangements of the music, not the song itself. In a statement the company said: “While we respectfully disagreed with the court’s decision, we are pleased to have now resolved this matter.” The lawyer for the artists, Mark Rifkin, told Reuters he was pleased with the agreement but did not give any further details. The tune was composed by two Kentucky sisters in 1893. Mildred and Patty Hill called their version Good Morning To All, which later evolved into the song that is popularly sung at birthday parties around the world. http://www.bbc.com/

Political Maneuvering

With the three leaders of the Alquerian Parliament neutralised or at least preoccupied the way was open for Rodriquez to usurp power. It may be remembered from last week that Antonio Poyato was doing the rounds of Almerían freak shows wearing false testicles. Manuela was searching for him, muttering, and promising to administer a minor but rather painful and unauthorised medical procedure. Loco Paco was barricaded in the basement of the town-hall with his pet Saharan Dung Beetle Benjy, and his five foot imaginary rodent friend called Bert. Rodriquez swiftly took control of the Remitroot plant and its stock of Whisky which he then supplied free of charge to the population of Alqueria. The result was a forgone conclusion. Every adult in the Pueblo was in a state of constant and deep intoxication. Rodriquez seized the moment and declared himself dictator. The constitution was torn up, which didn’t take a great deal of time as it was written on the back of a ‘fag’ packet. Rodriguez replaced it with a decree which simply consisted of two rule rules. Number one stated that Rodriquez was always right. Number two said that if Rodriquez was ever proved to be wrong then rule one should be implemented. When the evil Rodriquez was happy with his arrangements and the Alquerian Defence Force deployed on the streets the Remitroot Whisky supply was cut off. The population began to sober up. Now Alquerians can be charming people. Well, perhaps not actually charming. They can be

tolerably pleasant if the wind is in the right direction but when some eight hundred of them are recovering from a hangover s imult ane o u s ly then that is a place no one wants to be. The Alquerian Defence Force was charged with blocking all of the entry points into Alqueria, controlling the population and intelligence gathering. This proved a difficult as the force consisted of one person, Daft Pedro armed with a Zulu assegai which had no point as it had been used to open tins of sardines in Remitroot sauce, Pedro’s favourite food. Daft Pedro had joined the Defence Force by accident, he thought he was filling in a ‘spot the ball’ competition form. As the population emerged from their alcohol induced stupor they reacted in true Alquerian style by demanding more free Remitroot Whisky which Rodriquez withheld. The population was now totally under his control and the extent of his evil plan became evident. What will become of the people of Alqueria? Will our three itinerant heroes return to save the Village? We will have to wait until next year. Have a good Christmas and a happy New Year from all in Alqueria.

A Plethora of Parcels

Amazon’s claim to deliver to your door is a blatant untruth. What they should say is ‘We’ll deliver it sometime to somewhere nearish. The delivery man will call you when he gets there, but you must drop everything and rush to the appointed spot immediately, or he’ll go away again, and you will not get your parcel until Hell freezes over.’ Pete ordered 4 separate small items on the same day from Amazon, and in reply received 4 separate emails with 4 separate delivery dates. Fine, don’t question it; the fact that they all came from the same department clearly did not register with the electronic brain which oversees the Amazon delivery depot. Could a human brain have worked out that the same name, address and card number might signify the same person? Maybe, maybe not! We received Parcel 1 without a hitch and at a reasonably convenient hour. However, the courier of Parcel 2 wanted us to go to some distance away to claim our parcel. I dug my toes in, and after a bit of prevarication he agreed to our usual trysting place. Parcel 2 was signed for and we returned home. Some few minutes later the phone rang; ‘Hola, Meester Bighs. Paqueta from Amazon.’ I know that voice, I said to myself. The conversation resumed in Spanish; ‘We’ve just picked up a parcel from you. Are you sure it’s not the same parcel?’ ‘I’ll look.’ Much muttering and parcel-moving noises followed. ‘Yes, maybe it is.’ The phone clicked, and

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk he was gone. A few minutes later our neighbours arrived at our gate. ‘We’ve got a parcel for you from Amazon. We went to get a parcel for ourselves, and he asked us if we knew Meester Bighs, who lives in Limaria. When we said yes, he gave us this parcel.’ I took the proffered parcel with many thanks, but between all of us we weren’t quite sure – was this the same delivery man who had just got in a terrible muddle among the multitude of parcels in the back of his van, or was this a completely separate delivery man who simply hadn’t bothered to ring us and make us aware of the arrival of parcel 3? Whichever, the result was that we were in possession of 3 correct parcels, no matter how we had come by them. Of parcel 4 there is as yet no sign or sound. However, I expect it will turn up – somewhere, someday!

Stir to mix well 15g butter, then spoon the mixture into the 1 large onion (finely chopped) prepared tin and press down the 2 sticks celery (finely chopped) surface . Cover with foil and bake 2 garlic cloves, (finely chopped) for 20 mins, then remove the foil 200g chestnut mushrooms (finely chopped) and bake for a further 10–15 mins 1 red pepper, (halved, deseeded and finely diced) until firm when pressed gently. 1 large carrot (grated) Meanwhile, to make the sauce, 1 tsp dried oregano heat the oil very gently then add 1 tsp smoked paprika the garlic slices and rosemary sprig 100g red lentils and heat without colouring. Pour 2 tbsp tomato purée in the passata and add a pinch of salt and some ground black pepper. 300ml vegetable stock Simmer gently for just 15 mins. 100g fresh breadcrumbs Allow the loaf to cool in the tin 150g mixed nuts such as walnuts, peacans, for about 10 mins then turn out hazelnuts & Brazil nuts, (roughly chopped) onto a serving board or plate. 3 large eggs (lightly beaten) Remove the baking paper and 100g mature cheddar (grated) cut into slices and serve with handful flat leaf parsley (finely chopped) a little of the tomato sauce.

Individual Christmas pies Gently fry the leeks in the butter until softened. Add the mushrooms, mace and thyme, and turn up the heat a bit to soften the mushrooms and drive off any liquid that comes out of them. Stir in the potato for 2 mins, followed by the lentils, chestnuts and cream. Cook for 2 mins more, then take off the heat and stir in the 4 tbsp cranberries. To make the pastry, put the flour and suet in a food processor with 1 tsp salt. Whizz together until you can’t see any big suet lumps, then keep pulsing while you add the milk, a spoon at a time, until the pastry comes together. Roll out a quarter of the pastry on a lightly floured surface, then use 4 individual pie dishes to cut 4 pastry lids – we used 4 x 250ml ramekins. Use a small star cutter to cut out a star from each lid, then keep stars and lids covered with cling film. Cut 4 strips of baking parchment and use a little butter to stick one in each pie dish,

so the ends of the strips stick outeach side to help you remove the pies when baked. Gather lid scraps with the remaining pastry and divide into 4 equal pieces. Roll out each to £1 coin thickness and use to line each pie dish with an overhang. Divide the filling between the dishes. Top each with a lid, and roll down the overhang to meet the lid. Use a fork’s prongs to press and seal edges. The pies can now be covered and chilled for up to 24 hrs before baking. To bake, heat oven to 220C/200C fan/ gas 7. Brush each pie with beaten egg and bake for 30 mins. Lift pies from dishes and sit directly onto a baking sheet. Mix 20 cranberries with the redcurrant jelly and divide between the star holes on top. Brush pastry stars with beaten egg, add a small thyme sprig to each, then add to the pie baking sheet and put back in the oven for 5-10 mins, until pies and stars are golden and crisp. Top each pie with a star and serve.

Chocolate slices in the shape of cheese singles are coming to a fridge near you

Love chocolate but always longed for it to be sold in a form reminiscent of Kraft Singles? Wish granted. The Japanese candy company Bourbon is now selling individual slices of chocolate wrapped in film. Each pack contains five 2-millimeter (0.08-inch) thick slices that are described as “fullbodied deep, melting in the mouth” on Bourbon’s website. According to the Japanese news focused website Rocket News, which first broke the story, the chocolate used is a brand called Nama, which is described as “a rich, creamy confectionary that’s not as sweet as fudge, but more intense in flavor than ordinary milk chocolate.” It's basically made by mixing milk chocolate with cream and letting it solidify. The slices of heaven are sold in

Japanese supermarkets. But if you are not Japanese (or are Japanese but are allergic to supermarkets) you can also buy the product online in bulk at Bourbon’s website. Just be forewarned that you need to buy at least a dozen packages to place an order. Although sheets of chocolate seem like a pretty novel idea, the Danish have been topping white bread with sugary slices called Pålægschokolade for years. Yet, the Danish version seems harder than Bourbon’s version, which looks pretty malleable and perfect for decorating or using in a sweet roll-up. Regardless of who came up with the idea first, if any kind of chocolate is capable of making something that looks this good -let’s hope it stays on the market.Telegraph.co.uk

Keep your supermarket Basil Alive

A pot of supermarket basil is an almost universal starting point for timid first timers making an initial foray into horticulture. Coming as modestly priced, ready-grown plants on the shelves of the veg aisle, they seem like the perfect “gateway drug” – a spot of gardening you can do even in the dark days of December. However, after just a few days on the kitchen windowsill most wilt and die. But this doesn’t have to happen. When you buy a pot of basil, you are not buying one plant, but a tightly sown clump of more than 20 seedlings. This gives the appearance of an extremely healthy, bushy plant in far less time, which looks great on the shelf and comes in at far lower cost. But the reality is that these seedlings soon start to compete with each other for space, causing the plants in the clump to succumb to lack of light, water and nutrients once out of the cosseted confines of an industrial greenhouse. To fix this, simply take the clump of plants out of their pot and divide the root ball into quarters by gently tearing it apart with your fingers. Trim out the smallest and weakest plants by snipping them off at soil level to leave a maximum of five strong seedlings

per clump. Plant up each clump into its own plastic pot, the same size as the original, using a soilbased potting mix such as John Innes No 2. The high percentage of soil in these mixes holds water better than compost and provides a wider range of nutrients. It may also provide a better habitat for soil microbes, which a 2009 Argentinian trial suggested could boost flavour compounds by as much as 10 times. Give your newly potted plants a generous soaking and place them in a sunny spot, indoors or in a greenhouse, and let them do their thing. They will soon recover, giving you months of fragrant harvests – and four pots for the price of one. Pump up the volume Want to get even more aroma out of your basil? Aside from using soil-based potting mix, growing basil indoors (even in the summer) could dramatically increase its flavour. A trial at the University of Nottingham found that basil grown in warmer conditions produced more than twice the essential oil of that grown in cooler temperatures. Place it high on the hottest top shelf of a greenhouse for a noticeable spike in aroma. The Guardian/ James Wong

What is 'clean eating'? The fad Nigella Lawson loathes explained

Celebrity chef Nigella Lawson has railed against the clean eating craze that is sweeping the nation, describing it as a mask for eating disorders. Speaking at the JW3 Speaker Series, she said: "People are using certain diets as a way to hide an eating disorder or a great sense of unhappiness with their own body. "There is a way in which food is used to either self-congratulate - you're a better person because you're eating like that - or to selfpersecute, because you'll not allow yourself to eat what you want." In October she dismissed clean eating as a fad and said following a balanced diet should not involve "being smug". "I wouldn’t want a life where I lived on chia seed pudding, just as I wouldn’t want a life where I lived on eggs Benedict or steak and chips. "I love kale and I'm an avocado obsessive. But life is about balance, it's not about being smug. You don't eat things because you think they're good for you." On The Late Late Show, the chef used her mother as an example of the harms fad dieting can cause: "I knew she had a thing about thinness, but I worked out later when she was dying, she allowed herself to eat. "To wait until you have a terminal disease to enjoy eating is awful." So what is clean eating? The clean eating trend, which has been championed by celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Jessica Alba, usually consists of following a diet that cuts out processed foods and avoiding gluten, dairy and excess sugar. Those who follow the diet are encouraged to eat five to six times a day, including a lean protein, plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, and a complex

carbohydrate (such as lentils or peas) with each meal. Is it dangerous? Nutritionist Fiona Hunter agrees with Lawson: "This obsession with clean eating can 100 per cent mask eating disorders for some people, or even be considered a new type of eating disorder itself. "There are undoubtedly many people out there who have severe allergies such as an intolerance to gluten or cannot drink milk, and for them the idea of clean eating could be very positive. "But there are also many others who have latched onto this trend as a way of being able to decline meals in an 'acceptable' way. "Now they can turn away foods that feel are fattening, such as bread, without being shamed for it as they're following the clean eating lifestyle." The rise of orthorexia Those who take clean eating to a point where it makes them dangerously ill are believed to suffer from 'orthorexia', defined as a "a pathological fixation on eating proper food." Eating disorder charity Beat blames the rise in orthorexia on a shift on emphasis from losing weight to seeking physical perfection. Beat's chief operating officer, Lorna Garner said: "The increasing emphasis on body muscle and tone over and above size and shape may well be affecting incidence of orthorexia, along with more imagery available on social media and the increase in marketed products for 'fit’ bodies." Hunter believes the overall message of the clean eating trend is, in itself, a positive one: "Obviously it is a good thing that so many of us are becoming more aware and are more interested in knowing what we're eating. "But it's all about balance, you can't take it to the extreme."Telegraph.co.uk

CHRISTMAS JOY

The Ladies Friendship Group of La Siesta Church held a “Turkey & Tinsel” Charity Fayre on the 28th November. The sum of €1790 was raised which will be used to benefit chosen charities. A brass ensemble created a Christmassy atmosphere, turkey baps, mince pies and mulled wine tickled pre-Christmas taste buds and everyone enjoyed a convivial sunny Spanish get-together. Mary & Ann ran a fabulous Tombola stall (see attached photo) wearing haute couture hats designed to look like turkeys. It is to be hoped they escaped getting roasted. Others covered themselves in tinsel (see photo of Jean the club’s chairperson). All ladies are welcome to join the Friendship Group – we meet once a month. More details ring 966 720 414.

A Cinderella Christmas by Holly Kingston

www.carolnaylor.blogspot.com - www.carolesleynaylor.wordpress.com - naylorcl@hotmail.es

When I imagine living the social life of someone like Charmaine, it ’s all Champagne parties, Michelin restaurants and five-star hotels. The realit y is somewhat more pedestrian. Superficial. Talentless. These are the super egos who can manipulate the individual. Like Charmaine they are territorial and highly competitive. They may have an enviable lifestyle but behind all the glitz and glamour we have superficial characters, without real friends or genuine happiness. They trade off their good looks and media image, over-hyped, of course, pandering to the whims of their management teams and their bank balances and floating on the cloud of ambition at any price. Then there’s Ryan, every girls’ dream of male perfection and desire. He might be play-acting as Prince Charming, physically toned to make every girl squirm and squeal with delight and lust but is he true to his name? Of course not. He uses Lucy, who swoons whenever she sees him as a way to make Cinderella jealous. Lucy’s naivety and innocence is responsible for being star-struck by Charmaine Lewis, star of the pantomime with two singles in the top twenty, a cameo part in Doctor Who and engaged to premiership footballer Liam Phillips. And if that doesn’t impress you she also brags about having 700,000 followers on her Twitter account! She treats Lucy as her skivvy and Lucy seems to be perfectly happy being used as a doormat and a dog-walker because she is intoxicated with the feeling of stardom and fame. Lucy is completely bowled over by the most glamorous celebrity that she had ever met. She was infatuated by her swishy magnificence and grateful for Charmaine’s help in being given a comedy part in Cinderella as the back end of Daisy the Cow! Lucy Tilley’s claim to fame, after six years in the theatre was to have her name printed in the programme. She wears a hideous costume, air tight and claustrophobic. The exact opposite of glamour you might say. Her fame is like a lovely, shiny, contagious bug. Ryan had had seven top five UK singles, with a cameo appearance in Emmerdale as the hunky farmer boy. He was the man that Lucy admitted to being truly, madly, deeply infatuated with. After all, he was the most eligible bachelor in the UK. But what a jerk and eventually, after a bout of humiliation, Lucy’s bubble bursts and she sees through this thin coating of stardom and fame. Her disillusionment awakens her true understanding of celebrities and she becomes wiser and more

confident. Ben is Lucy’s bovine partner, the front bit. He gloats that Lucy gets to look at his ass! She sees plenty of that during performances. He has talent and has been working on writing a play which he also directs. His ambition takes him along a completely different route from Charmaine and Ryan. He is true to himself and modest even though he is very talented. I consider the reality of living Charmaine’s life. With her fake boyfriend, fake tan, fake hair, fake boobs and a noticeable lack of sincere friends. Living in the real world must be hard for these glamorous celebrities. Lucy has always felt that this celebrity bubble floats permanently on cloud 9 being pandered to and pampered. Botox, liposuction, silicone boobs are an integral part of being seductively desirable. It sums up Charmaine. She is fifty per cent silicone and one spritz of hairspray from being a serious fire risk. So, there you have it! Celebrity status. And what’s in it for Lucy? It’s a bit like being friends with a Jackie Collins novel. She makes my life feel more glamorous. Before you cringe, remember what I said about her naivety? She eventually sees through this act of pretence. I’m starting to get the feeling that Charmaine is full of crap as well as silicone and filler. Well done Lucy. Finally. Disillusionment kills her infatuation and brush with the world of glamour. Back to reality. A showdown with Charmaine, accused of playing the pathetic card to manipulate men becomes a moment of self-realization for Lucy. Charmaine has been jealous of Lucy’s natural beauty and goodness and wanted to eliminate any opposition. Her awe turns to feeling that she is a bit sad and lonely, her life as hollow as it could be. She musters up the courage to take central stage and to make something of her acting instead of hiding behind a costume or her tapdancing shoes. Perhaps there is a real Prince Charming waiting for her in the wings? Not a Ryan or Liam but a sensitive and kind man? That would make a perfect ending wouldn’t it? 2015 Tesla Model S 70D

December 2015

in the news Almost 25,000 Drivers Reported in Latest Campaign

During the latest campaign focussing on three of the most common contributors to road traffic incidents, which ran at the end of November, 480,000 vehicles were checked during the seven-day surveillance campaign, resulting in 24,543 drivers being reported. The biggest proportion of the complaints filed were for failure to comply with the maximum permitted speed. A total of 39% of vehicles were found to be exceeding the speed limit, 13% were exceeding the maximum limit by more than 20 kilometres per hour. In total, 15,301 drivers are now financially worse off, but hopefully more aware of the dangers of inappropriate speed.

The Tesla Model S keeps getting better. This 70D gets four-wheel drive and a slightly bigger battery pack, along with the 7.0 software updates What is it?: Is the Tesla Model S the most Darwinian car ever? It certainly seems to be evolving at a heck of a rate, because every time we jump into a Model S, even after the shortest of interludes, something always seems to have changed. This is because Tesla is consistently sending out software updates which rectify bugs and add features. It happens while owners are safely tucked up in bed and the car’s hooked up to wi-fi, with no need to give up your vehicle to a dealer and enter the scrum for a loan car. The latest update is version 7.0, which includes the much talkedabout optional Autopilot feature. This means the Model S will steer, accelerate, brake and park itself, feeding off a mix of radar, cameras and GPS data to ‘see’ where it’s going. The update also includes a new, cleaner-looking instrument display. However, it’s not just software updates; there have been hardware changes, too. Earlier this year Tesla introduced dualmotor four-wheel drive on the insanely quick – literally so with its ‘Insane’ mode that sets it to maximum attack – P85D. However, you can also have four-wheel drive on the entry-level model, which has a larger 70kWh battery than before for added range, and hence the new 70D designation.

You can still buy a two-wheel-drive version, but instead of the single 377hp motor driving the rear wheels in the 70, the 70D has two 255bhp motors, with one mounted on each axle. When you include the limitations of the battery this equates to a total power figure of 324bhp, with 387lb ft available from the moment the motors begin to rotate. The range is actually boosted over that of the two-wheel-drive model thanks to the better combined efficiency of two motors, meaning the 70D will theoretically travel 275 miles between charges. Realistically that’s more like 150-200 miles, depending on ambient temperature, equipment usage, the type of driving you’re doing and your driving style. What's it like?: The 70D doesn’t feel insane like the P85D, nor will it send your vision as blurry, but it's still mildly unhinged. It’s a car that’ll hit 62mph from rest in 5.2sec, so it’s always going to feel quick, but as with anything that swaps a tank of fossil fuel for darting lithium ions in rows of battery cells, it’s the instant torque surge that makes it feel half as fast again. And with four-wheel drive it can get its power down with stunning efficiency, even on wet roads. Stamp hard on the accelerator and the tyres just dig in as the 70D swooshes you down the road with nothing more than a muted whine to indicate any effort on its part. We’ve already written extensively about the Autopilot’s features, but suffice to say it works well if you accept the slightly misleading name. The Model S isn’t suddenly transformed into a completely autonomous car with the £2100 option (£2500 if you have the update retro-fitted to your current car), and it’s really for use on motorways or dual carriageways, where the car can follow clear white lines demarcating the extremities of the lane. To get it working you simply set the adaptive cruise control to the desired speed, give the activation lever behind the steering wheel a double tap and boom, you're in tomorrow's world, today. It is a bizarre feeling watching the wheel twirling itself as you barrel along the motorway at 70mph, made even stranger by the confidence the system inspires that, rather oxymoronically, makes you relax and feel like this is quite the norm. The Tesla sticks rigidly to the centre of its lane – more so than the meandering systems we’ve experienced from Mercedes and BMW – and locks onto the car in front like a Tomahawk, tenaciously maintaining the desired distance whether that car picks up speed or stabs on its brakes. Unlike those other systems it doesn’t need you to keep your hands on the wheel, and if you indicate it will happily change lanes for you, too. http://www.autocar.co.uk/

There were still far too many vehicle occupants not wearing a seatbelt. During the single week, 1,041 people were reported for seatbelt related offences, whereas 61 drivers were brought to account for not securely restraining children in the appropriate seatbelt and security system. The message that wearing a seatbelt halves the risk of

death is not getting through to some people. Similarly, the importance of wearing a crash helmet correctly is being ignored by some. A total of 39 people were reported for not wearing a crash helmet whilst riding a motorcycle or scooter. Not wearing a helmet increases the risk of head injury, the severity of the injuries, the length of hospital admission and the likelihood of death from head injuries. It is worth remembering that 3 out of 4 motorcyclists die as a result of head injuries. Using a mobile phone earpiece or headphones whilst driving is another common occurrence, in addition to drivers using their mobile phone or programming their GPS, all of which are not permitted when driving. During the campaign, 885 drivers were reported for distractions such as these. A seemingly simple process of answering a call, send a whatsapp or holding a conversation whilst driving diverts the driver and, in far too many cases, has had lethal consequences. Of those drivers reported, 646 were for using their mobile phone while driving. Continuing with the goal of zero tolerance on alcohol and drugs on driving, during the campaign there was an increase in the number of alcohol and drugs checks for drivers. In the seven days, 1,116 drivers tested positive, 807 for alcohol and 309 for drugs. Because of the dangers associated with conventional roads, overtaking, crossings or passing priorities are especially controlled. For a week, 268 drivers were caught carrying out a dangerous overtaking move and 234 for failing to stop or give way at a junction. The maintenance and physical characteristics of the vehicle can also be a contributing factor to road incidents. Within the week, 1,457 drivers were reported for driving vehicles with significant technical deficiencies, 53 of them were immobilized for technical deficiencies that made it impossible to continue the journey. Finally, not carrying the appropriate or up to date documentation resulted in 1,123 drivers being reported, in most cases for not having last ITV. Finally, 648 drivers were reported for not carrying or having incorrect or out of date correct personal documentation. http://n332.es/…/the-new-rules-of-the-road-for-elchechild…/

Imanyo Golf Society “Ted Adams Trophy”, 9th December at Roda

This was the first time we played for this trophy and many thanks to Ted and Ann Adams for sponsoring the day, their son even came over especially to play in this competition and guess who won? We had a good turnout for our first visit to Roda where the course was in great condition. A few of our higher handicappers found some of the holes tough but we still had a great days golf. We played full handicap stableford and we did a blind draw at the end on four holes to double points which made it interesting. Winner of the ”Ted Adams Trophy” was Neil Adams with 39 points, runner

up was Brian Court with 35 points, the Endevor award went to our favourite golfer, Phil Minty Ward, I shall not mention how many points he had. Three nearest the pins were won by our regular nearest the pin experts, hole 5 in 3 shots Alan Ralph, hole 8 in 2 shots Brian Court, and hole 16 in 2 shots by Alan Byrne. The football card was won by Neil Adams with Blackpool winning €20 and raising €20 for this year’s charity, Caritas Daya Nueva. We would like to thank Antonio, Norma and staff at Imanyo Bar for the fantastic food and great hospitality.

Lime bar Golf Society Los Altos, Orihuela Costa

The golf societies venue for the 9th December 2015 was held at Las Colinas Golf Course. Twenty-eight members teed off on a very cool but sunny morning. The course was in good condition and played very well, however it appears the early start seems to have resulted in the lower than average scores. The competition was in the stableford format and the scores recorded are as follows. Nearest the pin on the 7th hole ( par 3) was Pat Heaney. Nearest the pin on the 10th hole ( par 3) was Arthur Jones. Nearest the pin on the 14th hole (par 3) was Peter Gillespie. Nearest the pin on the 17th hole (par 3)

El Plantio 2 Golf Society

Tuesday 8th December saw 18 members turn up for a `Joker` competition, where each player nominates 2 different holes of the 18 before the start, and the Stableford scores are doubled for these. Everything went `swimmingly` until one of our members(who shall be nameless) contrived to leave his tee shot on the 3rd hole within diving distance of the pond. Jeff`s stance(sorry Jeff) required him to put one foot on the plastic pond liner and he contrived to loose his balance and slide down a steep slope towards the rancid, polluted water. Fortunately for him, he managed to catch hold of the top and was rescued by his playing partners. What could have been a serious accident eventually ended up as a joke, when someone asked Jeff if he had fallen in, `Would he have brought out some of the golf balls

that lay on the bottom of the pond`. Anyway, back to scores:- Nearest the Pin - Hole 1, Rod Loveday - Hole 4, John O`Brien. 3rd Place, Handicap 10 - score 36 Keith Smith, 2nd Place, Handicap 15 - score 39 George Stanhope 1st Place, Handicap 9 - score 40 - Ray Housley If anyone would like to join our Society, we play at El Plantio Golf Club on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. We use both courses - the Par 3 nine hole course and the main 18 hole course, so we cater for all abilities. The membership rates are very competitive, so call for more details. Anyone who wishes to play in the Society as a guest or join as a new member, contact Ian Henderson on 966 716 616 or 636 116 230.

La Zenia Golf Society

We drove down to Mar Menor on Thursday for our weekly game. Having such good weather recently it was time for a change, we did suffered with some heavy rain, some of our members had to retire, but 17 did carry on through the rain, there was not let up. Mar Menor was in great condition tee areas, fairways, greens, could only fault the bunkers but that was not the fault of the course, just the heavy rain which had packed the sand. Two single match play championship games were played, Marie Fegan won her game against Nick Brooks, and Steve Woods won his game against Steve Cardwell. Jim Scott won the day with 36 pts, a very good score due to the conditions We played full handicap stableford, four n/t/p's, and usual two's pot. Quesada Golf Society

Last Wednesday members of the society played the final game of 2015 at Lo Romero, which is situated just outside Pilar De Horadadada.... The deal on offer during the low season is a very attractive one and represents excellent value for money. The course is very popular with our members and as always was found to be in superb condition. The weather on the day was also superb and after the sun had burnt through the jackets and jumpers came off and a round of golf was enjoyed by all. The format of the competition was a “Blind Pairs” with each

knock. The winners of the competition were the genial Irishman and the societies lowest handicapper David McSweeney and Bert “king of the dance-floor” Morl with 58 points. In second place was the pairing of Scotsman Charlie Wallace and Irish cailin, Sheila McSweeney with 54 points. In third place was the pairing of Ron ”No paparazzi” please - I´m camera shy” Perkins and young Ann Hobbs. The “Nearest the Pin” winners were “Iron” Brian Smith, Sue Westerman, Tom Taylor, Eddie Scott and “big lads” John Dunnion and John Featherstone. The winner of the 2´s pot with not one but two 2´s on the day was Brian Smith who gratefully pocketed a fist full of euro´s not dollars. After the game the players returned to the Quesada Country Club for the presentations, a tasty hot and cold buffet kindly laid on and a few pre-christmas drinks. Thats it for 2015 which has been another enjoyable year for the society. The next game is the first one in the New Year at Roda on Wednesday 13 January, the course at which our Eclectic competition will be played for 2016 over 4 games there. Before then there is the societies Annual General Meeting which will be held at the Quesada Country Club on January 5th starting at 10.30 am. All members are encouraged to attend. Anyone in the Quesada area looking to join a very friendly golf society and play golf once a fortnight at a wide variety of courses at very reasonable cost, should contact the Membership Secretary Les Pancott on 966716723. Memberships run from January to December. Darrylldinho

EUROGOLF SOCIETY PLAYS BINGO, BANGO, BONGO!

Getting into the Seasonal Festivities, on Thursday 10 December Eurogolf Society played a game of Bingo, Bango, Bongo. For those who are not familiar with this format (and not many are!), you have normal stableford scoring, plus 1st ball on the green (bingo) scores 1 pt. Closest to the pin once everyone is on the green (bongo) 1 pt. First ball in the hole (bongo) 1 pt. With confusion over scoring amongst some players, a welcome interruption on the back of the 9th green, where mulled wine, sausage rolls, mince pies and delicious Christmas cake made by Colin Day-Gretton and served up by the lovely ladies, Claire and two the Sue`s, was much appreciated. pair comprising of a high handicapper and a low handicapper with their scores being totaled at After the game every one made their way back the end of their rounds.
