Major earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale strikes off Spanish city of Malaga Hit 100 miles south-east of Malaga at 4.22am with depth of 20 miles Shallow quake was 40 miles north of the Moroccan city of Al Hoceima Quake 100 miles south of Gibraltar followed by 5.3-magnitude tremor

A major earthquake of magnitude 6.1 has struck this morning about 100 miles southeast of Malaga in Spain with a depth of 20 miles, the US Geological Survey said. The quake in the Mediterranean hit at 4.22am UK time almost 40 miles north of the Moroccan city of Al Hoceima and 100 miles south of Gibraltar. It was followed by a 5.3-magnitude tremor. The USGS said its initial impact assessment suggested there was ‘a low likelihood of casualties and damage’. In February 2004 a strong 6.3 earthquake that hit near Al Hoceima killed 631 people. Earthquake: The shallow quake hit at

4:22am UK time almost 40 miles north of the Moroccan city of Al Hoceima and 100 miles south of Gibraltar, the US Geological Survey said Malaga is a hugely popular tourist destination for millions of Britons, with temperatures in the coastal city around the 16C to 18C mark this week which will be up to 10C warmer than London. It comes one day after an even stronger 6.8 magnitude quake struck southern Alaska yesterday, which saw several neighbourhoods evacuated after a gas explosion damaged four homes. The earthquake struck 160 miles southwest of Anchorage, but the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center insisted it was not anticipating a destructive tsunami and that there was no threat to Hawaii. Spanish criminal sentenced to take part in identity parades

Forget prison or a hefty fine, one Spaniard has been ordered by a judge “to take part in police line-ups” after being found guilty of traffic offences. In what many may see as a light punishment, a man caught driving without a licence was told he could avoid a six-month prison sentence and €775 fine if he agreed to undertake line-up duty. He will have to be available between 9am and 3pm Monday to Thursday over a period of nine months starting in March and will only be called if he shares similar characteristics to the suspect. The court in A Coruña in the northwestern region of Galicia made the deal under new guidelines issued by Spain’s Judicary and Ministry of Interior to allow offenders undertaking community service to be used in identity parades. Police have long struggled to find volunteers to take part in identity parades which involve a witness or victim attempting to pick out a suspect from a line-up of similar individuals. The sentence, the first of its kind, serves “an important pilot test in a process that needs better coordination so as to be available to all courts quickly and simply," said Judge Antonio Perez Loma. thelocal.es

Bite-sized dish given ultimate honour: World Tapas Day

Turespaña, Spain’s tourism agency, has unveiled plans to promote one of Spain’s most idiosyncratic customs by giving tapas its own day for celebration. Whether it be a humble bar snack served free with a glass of wine or a heavenly morsel created by a Michelin starred chef, Spain has decided that it's high time tapas got the worldwide recognition it deserves. So henceforth, the third Thursday of every June will be known as World Tapas Day, when across Spain and beyond its borders activities and promotions will be dedicated exclusively to promoting to the finger food. "Gastronomy is becoming increasingly important in tourism

attracting more than 9.5 million tourists to Spain in 2015," said Turespaña, announcing the initiative at Madrid’s Fitur, the international tourism trade fair. "Tapas is a symbol of Spain and is considered deserving of being the star of its own World Day because it is representative of our cuisine in miniature, is the focus of our most innovative chefs and because tapas is a word that is recognized in all major languages."

World Tapas Day will see tourist boards across Spain organize special tours and workshops in collaboration with chefs and restaurants. The

organizers said they already have more than 20 countries which will observe the day http://www.thelocal.es/

Gang nabbed over ten tonne olive heist in southern Spain

Those arrested are believed to be part of an organized network of olive thieves operating in southern Spain. Police in Seville in southern Spain have arrested four members of a dedicated olive-stealing gang and are investigating another five people linked to the theft. The arrests are the fruit of an investigation by the Guardia Civil into the theft of olives from groves in the Sierra Sur region of Seville in November and December 2015. Police said that they suspected the thefts were being carried out by an organized gang - one person responsible for finding the olive grove, while the rest of the gang move in later to pick and steal the olives at a time when the property has as little surveillance as possible. The gang members then load the olives into vehicles and take them to the point of sale, according to

police sources. Police believe the four men currently under arrest, who are of Romanian origin, are members of the organized gang. Officers seized 10,679 kg of olives which have been returned to their rightful owners, according to regional newspaper, El Correo. Farmers in the region had been forced to form their own vigilante groups to carry out night time patrols of olive groves after a recent rise in the number of robberies. With Spanish olive reserves low after the industry suffered two consecutive years of poor seasons, prices have surged since the start of the year by more than fifty percent. And after a long hot summer, 2015 promises to produce a bumper harvest but the downside of high prices and easy pickings is that thieving gangs have moved in to cash in the crop. thelocal.es

MEDIA RELEASE: January 20, 2016

Faith the three-legged Spanish pony dies, prosthesis gifted to another amputee pony in France The first pony in Spain to be fitted with an artificial leg has passed away, five years after her mutilated front foreleg was amputated in a life-saving operation. Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre cofounders Sue and Rod Weeding, who rescued the badly injured pony in 2010, said they made the heartbreaking decision to have Faith put down on the advice of specialist veterinarians. Faith had lived happily for years at the Equihealth Veterinarios clinic in Barcelona, under the supervision of skilled Dutch vet Gasper Castelijins, who served Spain’s 2012 equestrian Olympic team. But last October, Gasper reported that Faith’s good front leg –previously weakened by a severe case of laminitis suffered before her rescue – had began to fail. “No expense was ever spared on Faith and she absolutely loved her prosthetic leg because it gave her freedom. The amputation was the right thing to do ¬– it gave her a wonderful five years. She had companionship, mobility and lived pain-free in five-star accommodation,” Sue said. “But it’s all about knowing when to let go. When it gets to the stage that a disabled animal is struggling and you can’t make it better, it’s time to let go. It wasn’t a decision taken lightly but obviously no one was prepared to see Faith suffer.” Faith had been found in a dusty yard beside a Spanish farmhouse in 2010, her right front foreleg deeply wounded after being entangled for days in a rope used to tie her to a tree. She underwent months of intensive treatment at the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre, near Rojales in the Alicante province, but her mutilated foreleg was unable to be saved. In February, 2011, Faith underwent

ort

pioneering surgery at Equihealth Veterinarios in Barcelona, where two surgeons worked for five hours to sever her right foreleg 7.5cm below the knee. Faith was then fitted with a prosthetic leg specially made in the United States by Dwayne Mara of the Bayou Orthotic and Prosthetic Centre in New Orleans – the same skilled prosthetist who made the artificial leg that in 2006 saved the life of a famous American pony named Molly, a casualty of Hurricane Katrina, who was later attacked by a dog and lost her leg. “We believe that every animal that comes to us, because of the pain and suffering they’ve endured, deserves a second chance at life,” Sue said of the decision to fight for Faith’s life. “We gave Faith a good five years, which she deserved. She had the best and she inspired so many people worldwide. Faith has changed all of us a little bit.” Faith was put to sleep on October 29, 2015. "Faith's death has been incredibly sad for us and we needed some time to privately come to terms with this loss before making the news public,” Sue said. “Faith was such a special little pony who touched so many lives and of course we wanted to keep everyone who loved her updated on her case. We would like to thank our supporters for understanding our decision to take a few weeks to privately grieve before publicly announcing Faith's death." Now Faith’s artificial leg is set to help another amputee pony in France. The prosthesis has been sent to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at the University of Lyon, where veterinarian

January 2016

Michael Schramme is fitting it for a 10-yearold Shetland pony named Iris. “Iris had been diagnosed and treated for a chronic foot infection for several years by the time she came to see us in October of last year,” Michael said. “ O u r investigations showed she had a malignant tumour in the

foot and that the only chance of saving her would be to amputate the limb above the tumour.” Iris’s leg was amputated on October 30 last year, but a second amputation had to be performed slightly higher up the limb on November 20 after the wound became infected.

WOODY SINGS FOR ALZHEIMERS

After the festive break, it's time now to start the fund-raising nights again at Restaurante El Alto La Dolores, in Guardamar. On 17th February, Woody will be entertaining and helping to raise funds for The Alzheimers Association. Tickets, still at just 10 euros for a two course meal and top notch entertainment, are available from the Restaurant itself, or from The Card Place in Benimar, or The Post Room Benijofar. Tickets for all the monthly charity nights always sell out fast, and especially so when Woody is performing. Once again, star prize in the raffle

will be a Mediterranean Cruise, generously donated by the owners of the Restaurant. The three charities being supported again this year are Alzheimers, Torrevieja Stroke Support and The Children's Care Home in Elche. The most popular acts have been booked again this year, as well as a couple of top acts from Benidorm. ALL profit from ticket sales and the money raised from the raffle go the charities, so come along and support these very worthwhile causes and your local artistes.

The Owl and the Pussy Cat Postponed Due to Ill Health

It is with g r e a t sadness and regret that Campoverde Theatre Group has been forced to postpone t h e i r p r o du c t io n of the Owl and the Pussy Cat. T h e company were into their final period of rehearsals when one of our leading male actors suffered a stroke whilst on holiday in England. We tried to fill his role, but due to the short time frame we were unable to find anyone able to step into his shoes. After considering a wide range of options the company felt that the best way forward would be to postpone the production until the autumn. The company is now planning their next production, which is likely to take the form of a supper show, likely to be staged in early June. We are always looking for new members, and would welcome anyone who would like to become involved in any capacity within our company. You may be interested in acting, singing, dancing, working back stage; the range of roles required is numerous. Our group is a friendly, welcoming with a good social life accompanying our normal rehearsal schedule. Theatre Group is a great way of making friends, getting involved in a fun activity whilst helping to raise money for local charities. For more information call 96 618 9741 for more details.

Humanists of Murcia Walk

The walk started off disastrously as the heavens (Surely, “skies”: Ed) opened the day before and Audrey immediately banned the Rambla de Algeciras as it would be full of water. Then there was a long cyber discussion on whether to change the meeting point/ walk/ lunch etc. After consulting with the Alhama de Murcia Cycle Club (Vegetarian Section), it was decided to over rule Audrey’s advise and walk East along the canal path. The cancellations started. Jon (Stitches), Avril (Lost in IKEA), Jan (Black eye), Barrie (No wife), 3 people from Almeria (No border documents) and finally Bernice had too many G&Ts the night before. That was what Jim said. But in the end, 20 walkers turned up at La Taberna de Lucia in Librilla and began walking. Not East along the canal path, but up the hill straight to the Mirador overlooking the Embalse – The Blue Lagoon. There Rhian did a spiel about Humanists business and John read out Jon’s “facts” about the date “16 January”. Some people pointed out his mistake on “Columbus sailed the ocean blue….” and most people were not interested in Cymru Fydd (Wales’ first independence

party). No further information was reported on the reminder of the walk, but the consensus reckoned it was most enjoyable. The lunch was in Restaurante Lo Pagan on the edge of the A-7, where 22 people sat down to lunch. It was not as good a meal as November 2014, a little rushed and not a great choice, although to be fair, the staff were confused by Vincent’s eventual choice of main course. Lots of red wine that’s the main thing. The next walk will be in Almeria Province, led by Mike², if they can agree a date and route, and the March walk will be, by special request of Mike Lee, the Rambla beside El Pareton and the meal in Restaurante Maria Josafa. How frying is 'HEALTHIER than boiling':

Sautéing vegetables in olive oil 'increases antioxidants - helping prevent cancer and diabetes' • Frying vegetables in extra virgin olive oil increases antioxidants in them • Transfers phenols from the oil to the vegetables during cooking process • Phenols and antioxidants are thought to help prevent cancer and diabetes • Experts warn frying does increase calorie content, at the same time Budding chefs eager to cook up healthy meals for friends and family face a barrage of conflicting advice. There are advocates of the raw food diet, who abhor the thought of cooking. And then there are those who believe black pudding to be the latest superfood. But, now a team of Spanish scientists have added a new theory to the mix. They suggest frying vegetables is a healthier alternative to boiling - as long as the cook is using extra virgin olive oil. Their study found the cooking method increases the antioxidant capacity and phenolic fraction present in raw vegetables typical of a Mediterranean diet. These compounds, the researchers said, help prevent chronic diseases including cancer, diabetes and macular degeneration. A new study, by scientists in Spain, has found frying vegetables in extra virgin olive oil is healthier than boiling them. Researchers found the oil increases the levels of cancer-fighting antioxidants, and phenols, also linked to preventing chronic diseases, including cancer, diabetes and macular degeneration A new study, by scientists in Spain, has

found frying vegetables in extra virgin olive oil is healthier than boiling them. Researchers found the oil increases the levels of cancer-fighting antioxidants, and phenols, also linked to preventing chronic diseases, including cancer, diabetes and macular degeneration Professor Cristina Samaniego Sánchez from the University of Granada, said: 'Oil increases the amount of phenolic compounds in vegetables, which is the opposite to boiling. 'Therefore, we must stress that frying and sautéing conserve and enhance the phenolic composition.' The Mediterranean diet is characterized by a high intake of vegetables and extra virgin olive oil. These are both an important source of dietary phenols - compounds linked to the prevention of chronic diseases. This kind of antioxidants can be modified during the cooking process, increasing or decreasing their concentrations. The researchers set out to discover whether the choice of cooking medium – olive oil, water, or a mixture of both – had any effect on the amount of these helpful compounds in the cooked food.

They conducted an experiment, cooking 120 grams of potato cubes, pumpkin, tomato and eggplant - all without seeds or skin. They used three cooking methods - frying, boiling and cooking with a mix of extra virgin olive oil and water. In the laboratory, the samples were tested by high-performance liquid chromatography to measure levels of moisture, fat, dry matter and the total number of phenols, as well as the measurement of antioxidant capacity. Their results revealed that using extra virgin olive oil for frying vegetables increases their fat content and reduces their moisture, while this was not observed in other cooking methods. The scientists said the extra virgin olive oil increases the level of phenols in the vegetables, because they are transferred from the oil to the vegetables during the cooking process. They did warn the cooking process does increase the vegetables' 'energy density' - or calorie content The scientists said the extra virgin olive

oil increases the level of phenols in the vegetables, because they are transferred from the oil to the vegetables during the cooking process. They did warn the cooking process does increase the vegetables' 'energy density' - or calorie content Professor Samaniego said: 'Comparing the content of phenols with that of raw vegetables we found increases and reductions alike, depending on the chosen method. 'Oil as a mean of heat transfer increases the amount of phenolic compounds in vegetables, opposite to other cooking methods such as boiling, where heat transfer is done through water.' She said the extra virgin olive oil transfers phenols to the vegetables, adding those which are not present in raw vegetables. 'Therefore, we can confirm that frying is the method that produces the greatest associated increases in the phenolic fraction, which means an improvement in the cooking process although it increases the energy density by means of the absorbed oil,' Professor Samaniego said. In other words, Professor Samaniego warned, frying increased the number of calories in the food, as well. All the cooking methods increased the antioxidant capacity of all four vegetables, but boiling is only recommended when both the vegetables and the cooking water are to be consumed, Professor Sánchez adds. The article was published in the journal Food Chemistry. Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/

Ten ways to avoid

colds and flu this winter

Winter is the season for colds and flu. According to Dr William Bird, medical consultant of the Meteorological Office's Health Forecast Unit, December is when infections tend to become prevalent. Here, we look at some ways you can minimise your risk of catching colds and flu. Keep warm Granny was right - keeping warm can help you avoid coughs, colds and flu. Dr Bird says: 'After our exceptionally mild autumn, people won't be used to dressing warmly for wintry weather. So if there's a sudden icy snap, we will be more likely to feel the cold and start to shiver. 'Shivering depresses the immune system and this makes us more likely to catch colds. Also, lower levels of sunlight and altered levels of hormones such as melatonin and serotonin negatively affect how the immune system performs.' We lose up to 30per cent of our body heat through our heads - so wear a hat. Wash your hands Dr Nicola Goddard, clinical scientist at the Public Health Laboratory Service, says: 'Although most infections are mainly carried in the air and transmitted by the "aerosol" effect when someone sneezes, germs can be transmitted by physical contact and enter the body when infected hands touch vulnerable parts like our eyes, mouths and noses. 'These areas offer easy access to invading germs despite being equipped with defence mechanisms such as mucous and hairs. Washing hands often - and drying them on disposable paper towels (or laundering hand towels regularly) can significantly reduce the chances of catching a virus, especially the rotavirus, which tends to infect children and causes vomiting and diarrhoea. and infections. Nowadays, it is popularly used to boost the immune system in fighting colds and flu, and also as an agent to help heal viral and bacterial infections. Although Echinacea is used to boost the immune system, it does tend to lose effectiveness with lengthy usage. Ideally, you should take it for no more than six to eight weeks at a time. The normal dose is 3-4ml of alcoholic extract or 300mg of powdered herb tablets taken three times daily at the first sign of infection. It is not recommended for people with progressive systemic and autoimmune diseases such as tuberculosis, lupus or Aids. Zinc and garlic The mineral zinc is essential to help fight colds and provide a boost to a flagging immune system. Good food sources include meat, oysters, eggs, seafood, tofu, black- eyed peas and wheat germ. Zinc and Vitamin C make a great cold-busting duo. Garlic helps ease chest complaints, and small amounts taken daily may also reduce the frequency of colds and flu. Drink plenty Doctors recommend we drink about eight glasses of water a day to stay healthy. Rehydration expert Dr Susan Shirreffs says: 'Water helps the kidneys function properly and flushes out the toxins that accumulate in our bodies.' If you have a cold, being dehydrated makes your mucus drier and thicker and less able to cope against invading bacteria and viruses. If you've already caught a cold, drinking plenty of fluids will help flush out the infection. Sleep soundly Lack of sleep makes us more prone to infection, says Dr Bird. 'But it's not a matter of simply sleeping for longer, as some people - especially those who are positively motivated - can have fewer than seven hours' sleep every night and not suffer at all.

Low cloud, dull and misty conditions tend to bring an increase in germs, says Dr Bird. 'Viruses survive longer when the weather is moist. They can hang in the air attached to water droplets more easily, and when it's cloudy and dull there are fewer breezes to blow the germs away. 'This is the time when you're more likely to catch something - although you may not notice you've done so until ten to 12 days later, the incubation period for many colds and coughs.' Avoid huddling and heating Because people are much closer together physically during winter, this makes it easier for infections to pass between people. Crowded trains and Tubes with little ventilation, department stores bustling with shoppers, and people gathering for parties all make catching a cold more likely. 'Central heating reduces our defences and affects the respiratory system by drying out the protective mucous in our nasal passages,' says Dr Bird. 'The dry, stuffy air of central heating can also lead to sore throats and aggravate chest complaints like asthma.' A humidifier can help. 'Moods also affect our ability to fight off infections, and if you feel stressed you are more likely to become ill compared to when you're feeling buoyant, happy and relaxed,' he says. Keep on moving Dr Bird says: 'Don't underestimate the importance of regular activity, especially in winter. Apart from keeping our circulation going, regular moderate exercise increases the number of natural killer (NK) cells in our bodies.' These lymphocytes in the bloodstream and the mucosal layer of the nose and airways travel around our bodies scavenging foreign invaders such as bacteria and viruses. 'When you exercise, NK levels go up and stay elevated for about 36 hours afterwards,' says Dr Bird. 'However, if you exercise too much, this will actually lower levels of NK cells.' Take vitamins and probiotics Taking a daily multivitamin is especially important in the winter when we may be less likely to be eating enough fresh fruit and vegetables, and are also more at risk from infection. Probiotics, such as lactobacilli and bifidobacteria, are 'friendly' bacteria in our intestines and increasingly recognised for their importance not only in maintaining a healthy digestive system, but for improving the body's natural defence mechanisms. Studies have shown that taking probiotic supplements can improve the body's resistance to bacterial and viral infections. Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk

The Ground beneath our feet

The Alboran Sea covers the western Mediterranean between Gibraltar to the west and the Cabo de Gata, Almeria to the east. With Morocco as the African southern land border; it’s a geological active zone. Two continental plates meet a mile under the sea; with the African plate slowly sliding (subducting) under the Eurasian plate to the north. At about seven millimetres a year it’s relatively fast geologically speaking; meaning it’s going to move half a metre in the average person’s lifetime. This movement is responsible for creating the Sierra Nevada Mountains and Rif Mountains in Morocco. Worryingly there have been 50 destructive earthquakes over the last 2000 years averaging one every 40 years or so. One fault line is called the Adra Fault and runs south of Adra to Almeria. Another fault line is called the Carboneras fault running just off the coast of Almeria City northwards through Vera towards Torrevieja. This puts the coastlines of Malaga, Granada, Almeria and Murcia at risk of tidal waves or Tsunamis as and when earthquakes occur under the seabed. If the earthquake were to occur under land then the potential for catastrophe is huge. Almeria City was devastated by earthquakes in 1487, 1522 and 1658. On average a destructive earthquake strikes Almeria, Granada and Murcia every 75 years. In 1829 a 6.9 quake hit Torrevieja leaving 400 dead; this is largest measured over the last 200 years. The last major earthquake

pause for thought

It seems no time ago that I was questioning the wisdom of my parents’ decision to retire South, to Worthing, which, in my mind, appeared largely populated with elderly residents. And, as expected, their time became increasingly taken up with visiting the sick or infirm at home or hospital and running errands for the housebound, until of course it was their turn to be visited and have others tending their needs. So why, I sometimes ask myself, didn’t I heed my own advice? For here am I, 40 years on, just like them, retired to a warmer clime, where the English speaking population are of similar age to myself, requiring much time in visiting the sick or infirm and running errands for the housebound, as well as attending/taking funerals! But the Bible teaches that God understands our needs and aspirations, equipping us to deal with changing circumstances and often relocating us to where our abilities, of which we often are completely unaware, may best be used in His service. So my parents discovered many new skills in their retirement as they faced the challenges of their new surroundings, which kept them busy and extremely happy, working with the local Churches in serving the community to which they had moved, right up to their own

eventual death. And for myself? Well, I’d never written anything other than technical manuals and committee reports before retiring to Spain, and certainly never had anything published. Yet within weeks of arriving I was asked to write this item and discovered to my surprise that I actually could. Similarly, I’d never taken a funeral and actually disliked funerals to the extent of looking for excuses to avoid attending whenever possible. Yet here, that appears to be my prime role in life, and I find it gives immense satisfaction to serve in this way. Just chance? I don’t think so; for with God, nothing is random, but experience suggests that He brought me here and then equipped me for just these and other similar duties. struck the region in Arena del Rey, Granada on Christmas Day 1884 leaving 900 people dead and measured 6.7 on the Richter Scale! This was 130 years ago and Southern Spain is doubly overdue another large quake. In 1755; a massive 8 Magnitude earthquake struck the coast of Lisbon. It created a Tsunami which wrecked the Portuguese coast killing over 60,000 people. The largest documented European earthquake in modern times struck Messina, Sicily just after Christmas in 1908; the resulting vibrations and tsunami killed about 100,000. New buildings in Spain are built on the pillar principle; concrete pillars strengthened internally by a steel frame. These can be seen as skeletal unfinished villas dotted around the countryside; they’re built like that to ensure the structures will stay standing if an earthquake strikes. Older buildings run more of a risk of collapse as do houses built without safety in mind. Just twelve years ago in 2014; a magnitude 6.3 quake hit Al Hoceima in northern Morocco and 631 people were killed as many structures were not built to the same safety standards. This week on Monday 25th at 0522 whilst most were sleeping; a 6.2 magnitude earthquake hit the same spot. Located 60 kilometres from Al Hoceima and Melilla to the south with Malaga 150 kilometres to the north; injuries were reported in Melilla and

so far one child has sadly been reported as being killed in Morocco. Disturbingly; human activity is suspected of increasing the increasing number of earthquakes across Southern Spain and Northern Morocco. Massive water extraction to feed the water hungry greenhouses is affecting the ground beneath our feet. In Lorca in 2011; a relatively mild earthquake measuring 5.1 caused massive damage and claimed nine lives. The reason for the massive destruction was that it occurred just one kilometre under the town. Since 1960 the water level under Lorca has dropped by 250 metres. All that prehistoric water previously helped with something called Crustal Loading. With the water no longer there the Earth’s Crust simply bounced back up. Five years ago a house sale of mine collapsed as the then buyer was worried in case an earthquake hit Almeria; then just months later Lorca occurred. With water extraction continuing at pace to ensure we can all eat summer salads and vegetables all year round; the client may have a point!

Home Sales Up, Prices Down

In November 2015, the number of housing transactions carried out in Spain reached a total of 34,918, which represents an increase of 7.3% over the same month of the previous year, and 18 months of continuous growth, according to the latest statistics published by the General Council of Notaries, which shows that the latest increase is three points higher than the data for October. Although in seasonally adjusted terms the increase in home sales reduces to 3.3%, the Notaries point out that the path of recovery is being maintained, even if the volume of transactions is still much lower than the pre-crisis figures. By type of dwelling, apartment sales registered an increase of 6.2% year-on-year, more than double the October increase, due to both the increase in sales of free price apartments (+8.3%) and also to sales of second hand apartments (+12.2%), while the number of transactions on new housing continued to decline for the tenth consecutive month (-18.6%). Similarly, sales of individual family homes registered strong growth in November (+11.4%) and accumulated nine consecutive months of double-digit increases. In November, the average price per square metre of the homes purchased in Spain was 1,219 euros, representing a decline of 1.1% yearon-year, as a result of apartment prices falling by -0.6% and the price of individual family homes falling by -0.8%. The price per square metre of second hand apartments fell by -0.7% year-on-year (to 1,320 euros), while the price per square metre of new apartments rose by 5.9% yearon-year (to 1,666 euros). The total number of new mortgage loans also increased by 7.3% yearon-year in November, to 25,681 transactions. However, in seasonally adjusted terms this figure moderates to an increase of 2.4% year-on-year, the lowest increase in 18 months. Specifically, for the acquisition of housing, the increase was 16.7% over the same month of 2014 to a total of 16,404 new mortgage loans, representing an accumulation of 23 consecutive months of increases. El Mundo reported that the average value of these mortgage loans was 144,223 euros, which represents an increase of 5.5% compared to the same month in 2014. Finally, the percentage of home purchases which were financed through a mortgage stood at 43.3%, continuing their upward trend. In this type of financed purchase, the average amount of the loan was 77.6% of the property value, stable in relation to the data registered in past months.# keyro.com

10 EASY TIPS ARCHITECTS USE TO DETECT UNDECLARED OR ILLEGAL EXTENSIONS

Tumobilhome Spain S.L. is an English owned & run company and Is now Spain’s largest dealer of preowned residential spec mobile homes as well as being manufacturers of new mobile homes.

We buy, sell, transport and store residential specification mobile homes throughout Spain and Portugal. We have a main sales base in Madrid and we work all over the Iberican peninsula, the Balearics and the Canary Islands. We specialize in helping vendors who have been unable to sell due to difficult market conditions and circumstances now dictate they must bring the sale of their unit to a successful conclusion. We offer free legal advice to inform vendors of their rights here in Spain with our own in house lawyer. Clients who are having difficulties with site owners and unreasonable rental contracts can then make a more informed choice. Regrettably some of the site owners we have dealt with in the past have taken advantage of the Vendors inability to speak the language (we are Spanish speakers) and a lack of understanding of the law. We are here to redress that balance and help. We can arrange all aspects of a mobile homes purchase & sales such as the removal, disconnection, plot preparation and or clearance, furniture removal both locally and internationally. Many of our vendors sell their mobile home and move to the local village and pay the same or less in rent than their ground fees where and then put the proceeds of the sale into the bank. We have a fully legal and insured team of contractors. When we buy a mobile home we pay for it before it is removed, we can pay by bank transfer to a bank account in Spain or overseas. We can negotiate on your behalf with the campsite if you are overseas or feel intimidated by the site owner, don’t just hand in the keys in at reception and walk away call us! If you are purchasing a property in Spain it’s essential to; A - make sure the property doesn’t have an illegal extension or pool and B - is properly described in the Title Deeds with it’s complete build size registered in the Land Registry. Often a solicitor will base their conveyancing on the property’s dimensions via official bodies in charge of council tax/property taxes, but more often than not they are not actually up to date. Therefore it’s very important to follow these tips: 1- Ask the Vendors if (and when) they’ve had any extension or pool done. 2- Ask if they applied for licences and make sure these licences are correct. 3- To declare a property extension or pool not only a licence is needed, but also the certificate by an architect signing off the build after completion (“Certificado Final de Obra”) that is most often missing so should be requested. 4- Minor or small works licences “OBRA MENOR” are not sufficient for covered / roofed structures; therefore check it’s the right type of licence. 5- Always check a Pool as they are generally not declared or properly licensed. 6- Please note that glassed enclosures of terraces do increase the build size of a property and therefore should have a licence and appear in the Title Deeds. 7- Underbuilds, sheds, carports, workshops, outside kitchens and exterior storage areas are very rarely declared correctly in the Land Registry or have proper licences, again double check. 8- Be aware that covered structures attached to the boundary walls are usually not licensed or declared correctly. 9-Check the description in the Title Deeds for the dimensions and compare with the physical property measurements to make sure they match. 10- Give your solicitor an exact description of the property, (i.e. if two storey, number of bedrooms, bathrooms, sheds, pools, etc.,) and ask them to guarantee what you are buying is exactly what is declared in the Title Deeds. In all those scenarios the document needed is a Certificate of Antiquity also known as a Retrospective Licence, used to guard against sanctions in cases of lacking a prior-to-building work licence and needed in order to update the property’s description in Title Deeds & Land Registry. Solicitors don’t inspect the premises (and usually don’t compare notes with the Estate Agent) and don’t have the tools such as lasers and GPS equipment to measure a property, so please contact Martinez de la Casa Architects to check the property you are purchasing. For only 84 € (IVA included) we include an on-site inspection survey and laser measuring if needed, giving you and your solicitor a verbal answer within 72hrs of the inspection. Certified information is also provided for 250 € plus IVA, although when we detect extensions it’s advisable just to have a Retrospective Licence. Cost of a Certificate of Antiquity / Retrospective licence for pools is 190 € +IVA and extensions or complete properties 270 € +IVA. Discounts available for existing Martinez de la Casa clients. Please be aware that if you don´t detect any illegal/ non declared extensions or pools and you go ahead and purchase, there is no comeback. It will later be at your expense to upgrade the Land Registry and can decrease the value of the property in the future. Martinez de la Casa Architects also offers superb discounts if you require a Structural Survey for 72 € IVA inc., or Full Technical Report (insured) for 460 € IVA included, done at the same time. Only Martinez de la Casa Architects can guarantee all services within a stated deadlines and a fixed price. With over 4,000 clients in South East Spain, are considered one of the most prominent and respectable architecture practises, providing all types of Certificates and Licenses, amongst other services. anything to do with Iran. This contrasts with the desire of European companies and European governments to increase trade with Iran from the current €7.6bn (£5.8bn) to the pre-sanctions figure of almost €28bn. An unprecedented number of EU business delegations have already visited Tehran and the Iranian president, Hassan Rouhani, is expected in Rome on Monday and then Paris on Wednesday to revamp Iran’s relations with Europe.

FOR BUSINESS Europe’s big banks remain wary of doing business with Iran

Sanctions have been lifted but uncertainty over US authorities’ stance means banks are reluctant to handle payments A week after the lifting of sanctions against Iran, major European banks are still reluctant to handle Iranian payments as they remain wary of being the first to test the reaction of US authorities. Despite guidance issued by the US treasury aimed at reassuring Europe that it was permissible to do business with Iran, excluding a number of entities and individuals that remain blacklisted, the continent’s big banks still err on the side of caution. The Guardian approached 10 banks this week to see if they would process Iranian payments. The majority were unwilling to disclose whether they had plans to deal with Iran, a few said there was no change in their existing policy, and the London-based Standard Chartered, which was fined £400m by the US authorities in 2012, issued a statement to make clear it was not dealing with anyone or any entity that had

“I am yet to find one tier-one European investment bank that wants to go back into Iran,” said a senior European banker who did not want to be named. Sanctions compliance departments in big banks are busy digesting a 50-page guidance provided by the US treasury’s office of foreign assets control (OFAC) – some say the text is so complicated it may deter businesses from returning to Iran, while others fear it may be open to interpretation. The Guardian visited an HSBC branch in London last week to see if it was possible for an Iranian resident in the UK to open a personal bank account. It was not still possible but that was likely to change in two weeks’ time, a branch officer said. HSBC later issued a statement, saying: “There are a number of factors we take into consideration when opening a new account and we judge each application on an individual basis.” Barclays, Société Générale, RBS, Citi, Commerzbank and Deutsche Bank declined to say if an Iranian national unrelated to the Iran government, such as a student, was able to open a personal account with their banks. “Deutsche Bank will, for the time being, stick to its decision of withholding from doing business connected to Iran,” said a spokesperson. The general mood is to wait and let the others risk first. Smaller European banks or those in China and Russia that are not concerned about the US market, however, are more likely to lead the way. http://www.theguardian.com/

Poppy powder, which contains low amounts of opiates, is banned as a food additive in China. However, restaurants have previously been caught using it. In 2012, seven restaurants in Ningxia province were closed for using opium poppies and in Guizhou province in 2004 authorities shut down 215 establishments for similar offences. One of the businesses affected by the latest crackdown is reported to be the popular Huda Restaurant chain in Beijing. General manager Hu Ling confirmed the company was under investigation and said it may have unwittingly bought seasoning contaminated with opiates. She declined to comment further. China has been hit by a series of food scandals in recent years. In 2014 a Shanghai-based supplier was found to have sold unsanitary and expired chicken meat to food chains including KFC, Starbucks and MacDonald’s. In 2008, six children died and more than 300,000 were made ill from milk powder contaminated with melamine, an industrial chemical used to make plastics and fertiliser. bbc.com

The Obsessions of Loco Paco

Loco Paco is one of Alqueria’s leading citizens. A senior member of the Government, one of the three who re-established democracy in the Republic and a recognised trainer of Saharan Dung Beetles. This isn’t bad for someone who is clinically insane, apart of course from being a member of government, here being insane is almost a requirement. Being clinically insane did make Paco somewhat obsessive with whatever took his fancy and Paco’s fancies included the mundane and the exceedingly worrying. This week Paco was totally preoccupied with Manuela. He worshipped the very earth she tread upon to the extent of collecting it and keeping it under his pillow. He had to stop this practice however not only because of the strangely brown hue of his pillowcase but also the burrowing rodents which scurried about his headboard had become a health hazard. Paco’s strategy in the wooing of Manuela was not based on any romantic ideal but conjured up from the fleeting messages that Paco’s damaged brain received from whatever source. A source which appeared to have no experience whatsoever concerning winning the charms of the fairer sex. Whether this source was divine or not is difficult to tell but if so then Paco probably simply overhead a message meant for someone else. His first ploy was to serenade Manuela under her window at the dead of night. He expected her to appear a shadowy figure behind the rejas, drawn by his melancholy

viewpoint

guitar notes and lilting flamenco canto. He failed. Firstly because he was under the wrong window, secondly because his guitar playing attracted cats and his singing attracted airborne boots and porcelain night jars. His second attempt involved the sending of flowers. Again he failed. Again he got the wrong address. His choice of flowers was also somewhat unfortunate. Amalia de Vega Alqueria’s oldest inhabitant at 103 was not impressed with the Lilies and cypress wreath which mysteriously appeared on her doorstep. Paco was becoming discouraged and decided on the direct approach. He followed her everywhere reciting sickly and trite poetry he wrote himself and believed it to be timeless. It was all to no avail. If Paco had been a drinking man he would have turned to alcohol instead he decided on one last grand gesture. Paco would throw himself from the top of the church tower dressed in Sevillian hat and cape. This of course had one obvious drawback, if Paco was successful he would find it difficult to have a meaningful relationship with Manuela, her in this life and he his next. But the deluded Paco didn’t worry about such technicalities. The attempt, although spectacular was again disappointing. An updraught caught his cape which made him airborne and safely deposited him among the slurry of Pongy Pedro’s pig farm. Paco gave up and started collecting the earwax of famous Abyssinian Goat Shirlers.

Calm and Ordered Until

25

My world was relatively calm and ordered until Pete uttered the cataclysmic words ‘Are you sure?’ Immediately Doubt seized the opportunity and squeezed himself into the tranquil harbour of my mind. ‘Yes.’ I responded. ‘I think so.’ Doubt chuckled, and metaphorically spread himself out on my cerebral sofa. ‘Should you check?’ Doubt poured himself a glass of wine, and settled down to enjoy the fun.

By Jos Biggs

The surgeon had said ‘come back on Thursday.’ Did he mean this Thursday or next Thursday? At the time I was sure he meant this Thursday, but he didn’t actually say. Better ring and check.

it rang. Ah! So now it wants something, does it?

I eventually managed to get the phone to consent to accept the hospital’s number, but there was no reply. Strange.

It was the hospital – Can I go in on Tuesday week? Fine, no doubt about that, Tuesday week, a specific day, a specific week.

Then it dawned on me that if it was next Thursday I would have to alter my existing medical appointment in Arboleas. D***! That would mean another phone call, and another battle to the death with the phone. I rang. There was no reply. Strange.

The call ended and Pete, acting on instructions received direct from Doubt, said ‘Huercal-Overa or Torrecárdenas?’ I was sure she had said Huercal-Overa, but what if she hadn’t? I rang the hospital again. Still no reply. Strange.

I was rapidly becoming heated at the non-compliance of the phone and/or hospital when Andy scrunched up the gravel on our drive. ‘Can you phone the Ferreteria and ask them when they will deliver our fridge? They should have delivered it yesterday, but didn’t. I can’t get an answer.’ His childlike faith in my ability to communicate telephonically is touching, but undeserved. I rang, There was no reply. Strange. In perplexity we listened to the deafening silence of the phone, when

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk

I know, I thought. I’ll ring Ana, who co-ordinates all the appointments at the hospital. She’ll know. I rang. No reply. Strange. We can have direct communication with the International Space Station, orbiting the earth at 17,500 km per hour at a height of 400 km, yet I cannot contact a large static terrestrial building like a hospital, which is less than an hour’s drive away. Then I looked at the phone display – no signal! I wonder if this sort of thing ever happens to Tim Peake?

Bring to the boil – as the water starts to bubble, set the timer and boil for 5 mins. When cooked, pour off the boiling water and cool the eggs under cold water to stop them from cooking further. Mash the lentils well in a medium bowl with the back of a fork, then stir in the pork mince, sage, 2 tsp of the chives, the mustard, nutmeg, cooled shallots, a pinch of salt and a generous grating of black pepper. Peel the shells from the eggs and pat dry with kitchen paper. Divide the meat mix evenly into 4. Tip the flour onto a plate and roll in each egg to coat, tapping off any excess. Pat down a quarter of the meat mix on the work surface to a 12-13 cm circle, using the rest of the flour to keep it from sticking. Cup the circle in your hand and place one of the eggs in the centre. With both hands, pat, press and ease the meat mix around the egg until it is completely and evenly covered. Seal really well so there is no join, then pat and roll it into a good shape on the floured surface. Repeat with the rest of the meat mix and cooked eggs. Mix the panko crumbs on a large plate with the remaining chives. Beat the remaining egg on a plate, brush some all over each coated egg (you won’t use it all), then roll the eggs in the panko crumbs, patting them on to stick. Lay the eggs on a baking parchment-lined baking tray and chill for 20-25 mins (but not overnight). Heat oven to 190C/170C fan/gas 5. Heat 2 tsp of the remaining oil in

Lighter Scotch Eggs (Makes 4)

Ingredients: 5 tsp rapeseed oil 1 shallot , finely chopped 5 medium egg 85g green lentil (drained weight) 225g extra lean pork mince (less than 5% fat) 2 tsp finely chopped sage 3 tsp finely snipped chive ½ tsp dry mustard powder good pinch of grated nutmeg 1 tbsp plain flour 25g panko crumbs (Japanese breadcrumbs) the pan you used for the shallot. When quite hot (it is hot enough when a few panko crumbs dropped in sizzle immediately and start to brown), put in 2 of the Scotch eggs and roll in the oil to coat them well. Set the timer for 2 mins, then fry, turning often, to brown all over. You are just browning, not fully cooking the eggs at this stage, so don’t overcook or the coating may start to split. Transfer to the lined baking tray and repeat with the remaining eggs, lowering the heat slightly if the pan gets too hot. Bake the Scotch eggs for 12 mins. Remove and lay them on kitchen paper to drain and leave to cool slightly. Halve the Scotch eggs using a sharp knife and serve slightly warm or cold. Best eaten the same day or, when cold, can be stored overnight in the fridge in an airtight container.

Soft drink giants to cut sugar levels but Coke stays the same

Food and drink manufacturers such as Coca-Cola and Kellogg’s are promising to cut the sugar content in their products in advance of a Government decision on levying a sugar tax.

Key players in the processed food industry say they will introduce a series of "unprecedented" series of measures of their own volition, which they claim will help reduce Britain’s sugar consumption by a fifth. The measures include promises to avoid targeting the under-16s, as well as introducing smaller, healthier products. Kellogg's says it will cut 723 tons of sugar next year from all its cereals However it is thought sugar levels in Coke - with its slogan 'It's the real thing' - will remain the same. The moves come just days before David Cameron decides whether to press ahead with plans for a controversial sugar tax to help tackle what health experts have described as a time bomb of childhood obesity. It has been estimated a 20 per cent sugar tax could raise up to a £1bn a year. Kellogg's says it will cut 723 tons of sugar next year from all its cereals, such as Frosties and Coco Pops, by 2016 — although it would not specify any proportions. Levels in Frosties and Coco Pops are about 35 per cent and it is thought they will aim to get them below 20 per cent. The makers of Lucozade and Ribena are aiming to cut sugar by ten per cent by 2018, and 20 per cent by 2025 or sooner. Irn-Bru's maker AG Barr wants to cut its calorie content by five per cent this year alone. Other soft drink giants such as Pepsi and Britvic will also ban TV adverts aimed at children and billboards near schools will also be scrapped. Smaller sizes and new healthier products are also being promised. Coca-Cola, which owns a range of soft including Lilt and Sprite, is part of an industry-wide pledge to cut sugar consumption by 20 per cent before 2020. But the company — which cut the calories in its drinks by five per cent in 2014 — is only promising another five per cent drop over the next nine

years. And, significantly, it is reported that the seven teaspoons of sugar currently in the Coca Cola’s best selling red 330ml Coke can will stay the same.

Preparing for the Easter Processions in Torrevieja

Would you like to take part in the Holy Week (Semana Santa) processions in Torrevieja? Christmas and the New Year celebrations may only just be over but already the thoughts of the International Cofradia in Torrevieja are turning to preparations for this year’s Easter processions during Holy Week. The International Cofradia has the honour of carrying the ‘paso’ or float representing Jesus in the Garden of Olives through the streets of the town during two of the processions that take place during Semana Santa. The International Cofradia, as the name suggests, consists

with the numbers involved there are usually some who are unable to carry. This provides opportunities for new recruits to take part and they of course need to be taught the unique marching steps which when properly carried out actually help ensure the weight is evenly distributed and more manageable. This first meeting though is simply a meeting for the registration of those who are going to continue carrying the paso this year and to welcome any new prospective members. The actual practice sessions themselves will begin the following

of men and women of several nationalities but who are mostly British. Many of those who carry are retired and as a result the average age of costaleros in the International Cofradia is rather on the high side but age is no impediment to becoming a costalero. Each year the cofradia needs to recruit around twenty new costaleros. Becoming involved in what is a brotherhood in the true sense of the word offers a unique opportunity for integration to those of us living in Spain and to take part in what is a truly magnificent cultural and religious event. All of those who have taken part in the processions in the past have found it a very moving and emotional experience not least because of the pleasure it has given the residents of Torrevieja to see the paso being carried so proudly when for years before the International Cofradia was formed it had to be driven through the streets on a lorry chassis rather than being carried. The first get together of the International Cofradia will be on Thursday evening, February 11th starting at 7.30 pm in the hall adjacent to the Semana Santa Museum behind the Chinese restaurant on Avenida Baleares in Torrevieja. Even the most experienced costaleros need to get ‘back into the swing’ of carrying the float and inevitably

week on Thursday February 18th again starting at 7.30 pm at the Semana Santa Museum. There will be further practice sessions on Thursday evening February 25th, Wednesday evening March 2nd, Thursday evening March 10th, and Thursday evening March 17th when the paso itself will be carried down into Torrevieja to be stored in the marquee behind the church in the main square, ready for the processions themselves during Holy Week. The International Cofradia takes part in two of those processions, the first being on Monday evening March 21st and the second being on Friday evening March 25th. The processions during Semana Santa in Torrevieja have been officially declared by the province of Alicante to be of special interest for tourists and thousands visit the town to watch, lining the streets of the town to see the pasos pass by. We are always a little unsure at this early stage of proceedings how many existing costaleros will be available to carry this year and so if you are interested then please come along to attend the first meeting and find out a little bit more about what it is like to be a costalero and what it involves. If you want any further information you can also telephone David McLachan on 966 700 056.

One senior soft drink industry source told The Sun: "The health lobby will say we're not going anywhere near far enough. But if we can cut the nation's calorie consumption from soft drinks by 20 per cent in five years, surely that's a win for everyone?" Campaigners and chefs, such as Jamie Oliver, have led calls for a sugar tax to tackle childhood obesity — with a 20 per cent levy expected to raise up to £1billion a year. A draft of the plan is expected to be circulated by Downing Street officials next week. Industry leaders say that 57 per cent of soft drinks sold in Britain are low or no-calorie and are being "demonised" by the health lobby. The industry also claims soft drinks are responsible for only the fifth biggest source of sugar in a family diet, below milk and cream. Figures from Kantar research consultants show that the largest proportion of sugar in a family diet (15.1%) comes from fruit and vegetables, with packet sugar responsible for the second largest amount, at 10.9%. Oliver has been campaigning for a sugar levy to be included in the Government’s child obesity strategy. He told MPs on the House of Commons' Health Committee last year that a tax would be the "single most important" change that could be made. The chef said he would like to see the money raised by a sugar levy shared between the NHS and primary schools. Oliver, who has introduced a levy on soft drinks with added sugar in his own restaurants, told MPs: "We should be big and bold. Who is running the country, the businesses who are profiting from ill health, or is it us?" -The Telegraph

A classic car is an older automobile; the exact definition varies around the world. The common theme is of an older car with enough historical interest to be collectable and worth preserving or restoring rather than scrapping. Cars 100 years and older typically fall into the antique class. Organizations such as the Classic Car Club of America (CCCA) and the Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) maintain a list of eligible unmodified cars that are called “classic”. These are described as “fine” or “distinctive” automobile, either American or foreign built, produced between 1915-1925 and 1942-1948. In the UK, ‘classic cars’ range from veteran (pre–First World War), to vintage (1919–1930), to post-vintage (1930s). Post–Second World War “classic cars” are not precisely defined and the term is often applied to any older vehicle.

Tidbits of Trivia You Might Not Have Known

Domesticated pets are complex creatures. Have you ever wondered why they do some of the things they do? Your cat seems smart, but how sharp is his memory? Why is it your dog can always outrun you? Is it your imagination, or does it seem like your bird is always eating? Here are some interesting facts bound to keep you guessing.

Fun Facts About Dogs

www.K9club.es

Dogs only sweat from the bottoms of their feet, the only way they can discharge heat is by panting. Dogs have about 100 different facial expressions, most of them made with the ears. Dogs have about 10 vocal sounds. Dogs do not have an appendix. There are more than 350 different

breeds of dogs worldwide. Dalmatians are born spotless: at first pure white, their spots develop as they age. Contrary to popular belief, dogs aren’t color blind; they can see shades of blue, yellow, green and gray. The color red registers on a grayscale in a dog’s vision. Most domestic dogs are capable of reaching speeds up to about nineteen miles per hour when running at full speed. Using their swiveling ears like radar dishes, experiments have shown that dogs can locate the source of a sound in 6/100ths of a second. Domesticated for more than 10,000 years, the dog was one of the first animals domesticated by humans. http://www.petinsurance.com/

Book Review

All Bones and Lies by Anne Fine

www.carolnaylor.blogspot.com - www.carolesleynaylor.wordpress.com - naylorcl@hotmail.es

“No-one should be expected, for love or duty or anything else, to have to put up with having their very sense of self being chipped away minute by minute.” Let’s pose this one to start with. How do you find a way through the frustrations of caring for an elderly relative, especially a difficult one, so that love, or whatever we want to call it can survive to the bitter end? More relevantly, is it possible? Anne Fine thinks so. I like the way she has presented the twins, Colin and Dilys, as different as chalk and cheese, one who decides to do right by Norah whereas the other sibling remains adamant in her choice not to have any more contact with her mother, feeling bitter and angry. A five year rift seems a long time especially when the mother is old and becoming frail. Colin, as the mediator, tries to persuade his sister to make the first move but fails miserably. So, what should you do? Norah is a difficult woman. that’s an understatement. There is an astuteness in the way that Anne Fine has depicted Norah’s selfishness. Initially, she is described as a crow, or a vulture, take your pick, both aptly chosen images showing her “pecking away at the scraps of him (Colin)before he was even dead.” Images flash through his mind of ending his torment and taking a hatchet from his woodshed, his place of retreat with Suzie, a magazine picture showing this 19 year old falling as he overindulges his sexual fantasies: “it gave him pleasure to think about how those pretty buttocks might be, first trembling in anticipation, then clenched in shock” and his spells, to murder his mother. She is also described as being notoriously miserable and showing unsparing self-pity, alias Our lady of the Sorrows. She hoarded old misfortunes “fetching them out regularly for a brush and polish.” As for Dilys, she shows her cynicism: “They’re so wrapped up in their own little ways of burning up their twisted energies that they forget other people actually exist.” It seems difficult to imagine poor Colin tolerating his mother’s constant insults and sarcasm, her “impregnable cynicism” but he maintains regular visits, does her shopping, persuades her to eat an oven-ready meal which he has brought for her and makes endless cups of tea, alleviating any sense of guilt he might have felt had he been the absent child like his sister. But is Dilys capable of feeling guilty? Probably not. Dilys works in Corporate Sponsorship for a company called Tor. She could be scathing and insensitive but wasn’t considered malicious. She was notorious in picking up womenfolk with a passion, such as Perdita, Val and Marjorie before dropping them as quickly. Colin tells us that she “chewed them up and spat them out.” Colin worked for the council as an Environmental Health Officer. He described his life as “pathetic,” a life no-one cared about. If he died, no-one would miss him except perhaps Norah who depended on him for practical support. He had hidden behind Dilys, inadequate, painfully timid, clumsy as a child and deemed a failure at school where he was constantly mocked and bullied. He would skivvy for the neighbours and this plagued him throughout his adult life. The good news is

that he develops in confidence and by the end of the novel, he shows more control and becomes more relaxed and of course, happier as a person. He harbours a sense of horror thinking of an incident that became significant in his life, offering a much needed lifeline. It involved a potentially tragic accident when a baby was catapulted from her pram after being hit by a car, two years ago. Dilys proved to be an unlikely heroine: “The way she walked down the street now, you would have thought all she had reached up to catch that one, steel-blue morning was a ball” and not a “pink and flying baby into her hands.” Everything and everyone had frozen in time. The incident had haunted Colin and as a consequence he befriended Mel, the mother and became close to her daughter, Tammy who he soon grew to adore. He daydreamed over caring for Mel and organising Tammy’s life from her choice of schools to marching her down the aisle. Mel lived in a grotty flat, in a grim area of Chesterton Court, sharply contrasting with pretty suburban West Priding where Norah lived. Mel’s secret life involved being a trapeze artist known as one half of an act called Las Venturas. Colin is impressed by this “celestial magic” which had sadly become the “drabbest of life he could imagine.” Just like his own life. He had found Mel’s strange indifference and willowy passivity coupled to her attitude of “take and take” extremely off-putting until gleaning of her magical world of the circus. In his highly imaginative world, Colin thought of marrying Mel and moving her away from this poverty, providing for her and her adorable Tammy; he wanted the child but not a wife. His “vision of parental bliss” was being able to take Tammy out to an ice cream parlour! Daily visits to his mother which he compares to a “grim pilgrimage” brings with it a realisation of how “horribly old” she looked. Colin’s life seemed to be following a dreary and similar pattern to his unfortunate father, of indifference, before his alleged suicide. Norah secretly changes her insurance policy which Colin finds is inadequate and he constantly worries about her faulty appliances in case of fire risk. Norah’s birthday seems to be a pivotal time for Colin, especially when he started to see his mother in a different light, a “new charitable understanding of his own mother.” A nasty bout of food poisoning means a stay in hospital for one unfortunate character followed by three freak fires which allow some of the characters to start afresh. A black card is issued and instead of pay-back time Colin adopts a caring stance: “He’d do right by her. as good as anyone could hope for.” Perhaps Norah didn’t deserve such kindness but don’t they say that blood is thicker than water? And, if anything, Colin makes a decent decision to be good to his mother. Publisher: Black Swan Books. ISBN: 0-552-99898-2.

Spanglish Golf Society

Costa Blanca Golf

For this month’s meeting the Spanglish Golf Society and a group of 20 players visited the established course at Font Del Llop taking advantage of the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services.

For many years Costa Blanca golf was centred on the few established courses of Villamartin, Las Ramblas and Campoamor BUT with the rapid development on the area surrounding Torrevieja there is now a larger selection of high quality courses all within a short 20-25 minute drive. While the area of Torrevieja is not particularly well served with hotel accommodation there are an abundance of apartment and house rental accommodation with excellent road and motorway links to both Alicante and San Javier (Murcia) airports and with an abundance of bars and restaurants. In addition to the original established courses mentioned above the Torrevieja area is now also well served with excellent courses such as La Finca, La Marquesa, Las Colinas, Lo Romero and Vistabella offering different golf experiences with a variety of sea and mountain views. La Finca and Lo Romero are popular with residents and tourists alike and Las Colinas is probably the jewel in the crown and is the current home of European PGA tour stage 2 qualifying. Vistabella is a well presented par 73 courses giving golfers the opportunity to play a unique 22 hole round of golf. Costa Blanca golf in the area of Torrevieja will provide golfers of all standards a wonderful golfing experience that they will wish to repeat on future visits.

(in association with Costa Blanca Green Fee Services) at Font del Llop on 20th January 2016.

The weather was good and this was a bright and sunny January day although it did get chillier late in the day and rained on the drive back to Torrevieja. The winners on the day were as follows: 1st – Mike Probert – 37 points 2nd – Mark Bailey - 37 points 3rd – Dianne Bailey - 37 points 4th – Ray Muttock - 36 points Nearest the Pins – Mike Probert (2),John Goulder and Dianne Bailey Best Front 9 - John Evans – 20 points Best Back 9 – John Clark – 16 points Best Supporting Act – Alan Cooper Football Card – John Goulder After the game we returned to the Spanglish bar, which is located at Dona Pepa, Quesada for a welcome meal prepared by the bar and the prize presentation and we give our thanks for their support. Our next interim fixture is at Vistabella on Wednesday 3rd February 2016 and the monthly meeting is at La Serena on Wednesday 16th February 2016 and both are already almost fully booked. If you are interested in joining the society call Paul Cawte on 966731223 or Graham Hall on 664692638 or better still pop into the bar. Report by Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services on 966 704 752 or 661 345 931 or see us at our web-site at www.costa-blanca-greenfees.com.

San Miguel Golf Society at Lo Romero. January 20th, 2016.

Another strong turnout of 46 members and 1 guest, this time for San Miguel’s visit to the much liked and very well maintained Lo Romero course located close to Pilar de La Horadada. Spring like weather (is winter ever going to make a show this year?) with just a slight chill for the early starters, and a course in excellent condition, particularly the greens which ran superbly true and had the best cut holes of any course played by the society in the last few months, bode well, and so it proved with 26 members scoring 30 or more points. As with SMGS’s last visit, Gold category posted the best overall returns, and Bronze, with the exception of its winner Ray Ewins, the not-so-good. There was little between the top five in both Silver and Bronze categories, with 9 of the 10 positions being determined by count back. Such good general scoring has many somewhat excited by the thought of the upcoming Quesada League match to be held at Lo Romero at the beginning of February when SMGS ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams will play each other in a battle for the points. The day’s stableford results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 5th Brian Mulligan (31 on CB), 4th Norman Padmore (32 on CB), 3rd Carmel McCann (32 on CB), 2nd Keith Stevenson (33), and 1st, and yet again in the prizes, Ray Ewins with 36 points.

Silver Category: 5th Dave Stewart (35 on CB), 4th Phil Birtwistle (35 on CB), 3rd Roger Webb (35 on CB), 2nd Ken Flaherty (35 on CB) and 1st, beating her handicap (and husband) and with a two point gap ahead of 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th (rather unusual), previous category (bronze) winner here, Margaret Birtwistle with 37 points. Gold Category: 5th Richard McCann (36 on CB), 4th Paul Guest (37 on CB), 3rd Ivan Hanak (37 on CB), 2nd Steve Fleet (38 on CB), and 1st, also with 38 points and along with Steve best scorer of the day, and clearly in good form given recent results, John Osborne. The Abacus, a decent bottle of red plonk, was won by Eva Leidstrom thanks to the real winner leaving early. Nearest the pins on the par 3’s (open to all) went to Steve Fleet (5 and 12), Richard McCann (7) and Darren Hancock (15). Our thanks go to the staff at Lo Romero golf course for their contribution to an enjoyable day, in particular to the greenkeeper and groundsmen, and for those at the desk for remembering to return driving licences etc., put down as collateral when accepting buggy keys, to those souls whose memories may not be what they once were. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs. org or simply give Barry Roehrig a call on 966 731 033 to find out more about the society and its weekly golf get-togethers. Next week we will be at La Finca.

Torrevieja Courses

Campoamor Golf This course has stunning views from the clubhouse and superb hotel and is located only 10 minute drive from the local beaches, bars and restaurants and a 40 minute drive from Alicante airport. The course is long even from the yellow tees at 6,198 metres (6,818 yards) with numerous right to left dog-leg holes on sloping and undulating fairways which explains the handicap ‘slope’ rating which is very high and in general provides players with 3-4 additional shots against their normal handicap.

and vegetation. A new clubhouse and hotel have recently been constructed and the practise facilities are excellent with two chipping and putting greens, practise bunker and a driving range played off grass.

La MarquesaLa Marquesa Golf

designer has presented the course with the widest variety of different greens to be seen on the Costa Blanca, although some think too varied. The course has good views and a number of lakes with running water ensuring plenty of wild birds

The course was designed by Justo Quesada and opened in 1989 as the Club de Golf Quesada with the name being changed in 1994 to La Marquesa Golf and Country Club and in 2010 was the first course in the Valencia region to receive the ISO 9001 award for quality and excellence. The course is a par 72 layout of 6,115 metres (6,726 yards) from the white tees and 5,971 metres (6,568 yards) and 5,098 metres (5,607 yards) from the yellow and red tees respectively. http://www.costa-blanca-greenfees. com/

2016 Audi Q7 3.0 TDI 218

Lower-end Q7 is as luxurious and well-mannered as any, although still not quite the model to plump for What is it?: The entry-level version of the Audi Q7, the second generation of which was introduced to the UK market late last year. With 53bhp and 74lb ft less than its sister model, it’s just under a second slower to 62mph from rest than the 268bhp version – although it’s still a bluff two-tonne SUV capable of topping 130mph itself, and pretty plainly a long way from being underpowered. Offered in the same SE and S line trim levels and with all of the same equipment and available options, the lower-end Q7 isn’t a car with any less technological sophistication or breadth of ability than its more powerful sibling. And so, given that its gruntier equivalent isn’t exactly a driver’s car either, could this Q7 be the pick of the range? What's it like?: An outstanding old-school Audi in so many ways, in terms of perceived quality, refinement, comfort, occupant space, onboard technology and remarkable ease of use. Almost all of the ways in which we praised the full-house diesel version last year, then. That said, this is perhaps not the canny buy you might expect it to be. Even though the car doesn’t have quite the same imperious, immaculately smooth kind of performance as its rangemate, few could complain about how forcefully it gets up the road. The engine feels potent enough when accelerating the car’s mass from town speeds, and the eight-speed automatic gearbox selects its ratios cleverly when overtaking, keeping the tacho’s needle at, or close to, peak torque. Wind the motor up to 3500rpm and the car’s mask of invincibility slips a bit, the V6 beginning to get breathless in the higher gears. But that’s only ever likely to be a factor when doing the kind of outsidelane motorway speeds for which Audi drivers are becoming notorious. Frankly, they’re speeds that any rightthinking Q7 owner would seldom even approach, such is the readily apparent maturity and refinement of the car’s character and the sweetness of its gait at a relaxed pace. Equip the Q7 with adaptive air suspension, as came fitted to our test car,

and you’ll find its ride indulgently supple in Comfort mode and its cabin isolation top-drawer at all times. Steering is averagely light and isn’t troubled by anything as potentially wearing as contact patch feel, but it’s fluent enough. Body control is respectable, and the car steers faithfully and securely - although it wavers vertically on its springs at higher speeds at times, potentially disturbing passengers if you hurry. The steering’s fluency becomes replaced by unhelpful weight and apparent stickiness and the buoyancy of that ride by a more fidgeting compromise which, while it boosts handling response and heave control a bit, isn’t worth the trade-off. At no time is the Audi actually uncomfortable, nor anything like it, but its dynamic calling card is undoubtedly less compelling while it’s pretending to be ‘sporty’. The car’s supremely well-constructed interior exudes an aura of integrity and class that can be matched by no other large SUV. Its infotainment and convenience functions are second-to-none, too, and there’s room for even large adults to stretch out in both the first and second rows, with average-sized ones relatively comfortable in row three. Should I buy one?: Given that the difference on showroom price between the lesser and greater diesels is less than £3000 (much of which can likely be offset against stronger residual values for the more in-demand higheroutput model), we’d advise that the 268bhp Q7 is the smarter buy. Audi’s customers will likely dress up their cars with several thousand pounds of options, after all. And attempting to offset any of that discretionary spend by scrimping on what’s under the bonnet wouldn’t be advisable. http://www.autocar.co.uk/

Certain crimes cannot be reported, as those in which there is physical violence or other events where the authors are clearly identified. Once the citizen has made the report at the “e-Denuncias Virtual Office”, within the next three days he/she will have to go to in person to the assigned Guardia Civil station to confirm the report. However, if the citizen wishes to confirm such report at a different police station other than the assigned one, it can be done by providing the reference given by the “e-Denuncias” system. Citizens who use this application will have ENGLISH priority once they have confirmed their AND reports, in comparison SPANISH to other citizens who may come to report events of a similar nature. Therefore, unnecessary delays will be avoided for citizens. n332.es/

SAMM Honours Member

Every year the Race Committee of SAMM, the Sailing Association Mar Menor, make a special award to a member; either to acknowledge their efforts to support the race program or to recognise their sailing and racing skill. This year the proud recipient was Bob Miles who was given the award, a glass yacht trophy, to acknowledge his tireless work over the last five years as the chief maintenance and training manager for the SAMM support boat. Bob is a retired GPO engineer and RYA qualified power and safety boat instructor. However he has not retired from helping SAMM as he will continue to be responsible for the maintenance of the new Whaly support boat, which was launched on January 13th, and train suitably qualified SAMM members in its safe use in a variety of tasks. As the support boat for the race

program, a tender to get to boats on swinging moorings, to stand by during dinghy training and practice sessions, to collect wayward boats of the IOM radio control group and generally support any SAMM on-the-water activity. The photo shows Bob being presented with the award by outgoing Commodore Janice Penning. For more information about SAMM go to www.sailingmarmenor.com
