activists demonstrate calling for new government to protect social rights

SEVER AL nationwide activist groups took to the streets yesterday (Saturday) calling for the as-yet unconfirmed future government of Spain to 'protect the public's rights'. The Marea Blanca ('white wave') of medical staff campaigning for more investment in public health, the Marea Verde ('green wave') of education workers calling for better funding in schools and colleges, the Marea Roja ('red wave') of jobseekers demanding employment for all, the Marea Naranja ('orange wave') calling for an end to social welfare cuts, the Marea Violeta ('purple wave') calling for equality, and Mareas, or 'waves', of other colours came out in force. They mostly marched through the streets of Madrid, but smaller

March 2016

gatherings took place in other cities and towns across the country. “Whoever governs, human rights must be protected,” banners read, and a manifesto stated that the new leaders of Spain needed to fight for a fair and dignified life for the public despite the current political uncertainty. Tuesday this week (March 1) will see the beginning of the debates leading up to the in-house voting over whether or not PSOE (socialist) leader Pedro Sánchez should be president. The actual vote will be over Thursday and Friday, March 4 and 5, meaning Sánchez is in a race against time to secure support and possible coalition partners. His mission has suffered a setback after left-wing independents Podemos announced they would no longer support or attempt to join in government with the PSOE after a deal was struck between Sánchez and leader of the centre-liberals Ciudadanos, Albert Rivera. But Sánchez still hopes to persuade Podemos' leader Pablo Iglesias to at least abstain in the in-house voting, if not to vote in favour of him, and possibly even agree to joining forces with him. thinkspain

OVER 10,000 homes in the region of Aragón were left without electricity last night, and 2,000 of these still have no power. Wind, rain and snow led to supply cuts overnight, mainly in the province of Teruel where 9,644 homes were left in the dark. In the Navarra region, to the north-east, the motorway was shut after a high-voltage pylon was blown down onto it, which cut off the electricity in the towns of Lekunberri, Larraun and Arakil. So far it has taken far longer than anticipated to get residents in Teruel and Navarra reconnected, since the thick snow was not expected to fall at such low altitudes and left authorities and Civil Protection volunteers unprepared. Snow-ploughs had to be brought in to clear the road before engineers from the electricity board, Endesa, could reach the site of the breakdown. In the meantime, generators have been installed to ensure most of those affected have at least a basic supply for cooking and heating. Main highways and B-roads across the province of Teruel – popular with skiers at this time of year – were shut off, including those in Alfambra, Calamocha, Camarena de la Sierra, Cedrillas, Mosqueruela, Noguera, Ejulve, Montalbán, Linares de Mora, Cañizar del Olivar and Teruel city itself. Elsewhere in the region, the A-1504 in Miedes de Aragón (Zaragoza province) and the A-136 in Broto (Huesca province) were closed. A total of 36 roads in Aragón still need snow chains, including the inter-provincial highways, the N-211 in Caminreal and the N-420 in Perales de Alframbra and Utrillas, and most of the B-roads in the province of Huesca. The northern part of the Ebro river is expected to rise and possibly even burst its banks in the next day or two as the snow finally melts.

Xabi Alonso faces court action over alleged tax evasion – two months after prosecutors dropped the case YET another famous footballer has fallen foul of Spain's tax authorities – Bayern Munich's Xabi Alonso, who used to play for Real Madrid FC, is facing legal action through the head of prosecution in the Spanish capital. Yet his solicitor had been told nearly three months ago that no charges would be pressed as 'no illegal activity had been found'. The Basque-born star, who scored the winning World Cup goal for Spain in 2010, had sold his image rights a year earlier to a company on the Portuguese island

of Madeira. Although trading under a different name, the firm is the same as Barça's Mascherano sold his own rights to shortly beforehand. Both firm names shared the same accountant and tax domicile, but had no known commercial activity. Spain's tax authorities announced in September that it had detected income not declared to them on Xabi Alonso's part – a claim the player denied the same month in a press release. Mascherano, who played alongside Xabi in Liverpool, UK between

2007 and 2009 - the period during which they are each accused of committing the 'fraud' – was tried for evading €1.5 million in tax and then sentenced when he pleaded guilty. Xabi, in Twitter and Facebook posts, said the State prosecution had not allowed him or any of his representatives sight of the case file – nor what Xabi says was a decision to archive it on December 15 after considering there had been 'no illegal action whatsoever' on his part. A recent post says that, as at the date of writing, neither Xabi Alonso nor his legal advisors had been formally told of any court case opened against him about 'any class of fraud'. Inspections by the financial crimes prosecution in Madrid were called for on July 29 last year and,

over the next five months, several were carried out 'to clarify the accusations', Xabi's Twitter post says. The prosecution then contacted him and his legal team to tell them the case had been filed as no illegal activity had been discovered, and that they would be notified as such in writing. By early February this year, after six months had passed since the case had opened, the player's legal representatives wrote to the prosecution to formally request this notification they were promised two months earlier. “Without further explanation, they told us that, despite the verdict on December 15, they had decided to take the matter to the courts, and have refused to allow us access to the file or to the December verdict,” Alonso continues. “This is a clear contradiction of the decision reached by the specialist prosecution team.” The post says Xabi 'reiterates absolutely categorically' that he has always complied with his tax obligations and continues to do so, but that he was prepared to cooperate in full with the court based upon his conviction that it would be found his actions 'were and are fully in accordance with laws in force'. thinkspain

World Premier for Local Actors

It all started around 2008 when an idea suddenly popped into the head of a San Luis actor who was on stage with a local Theatre group. Having been selected at an audition to play an integral part in a Feature film to be shot in the North East of England only wetted the artistic appetite and a story slowly but surely started to find itself being formed in a note book. Jet Pack forward a couple of years, and we see a team slowly forming to bring the plan to fruition. A promise from a big name British Acting star to appear in the production should it be made, gives a much needed spur when times are hard and people let you down and even make you question your sanity. However, a determination was now starting to fester in the mind and when someone suggested on a few occasions that you'll never make the movie, then there was the 'what do you know about film making' and the hurtful 'no one will want anything to do with a bunch of locals making a film'. Well, in fact, some comments were spot on because

ort

euro

not many people thought it would be made and not many people supported the project. Strangely, that included many people who involved themselves in it then expressed little desire to support it. Yet with all that negativity, a Phoenix has arisen and its now a completed Feature Film with no less than 3 quality songs specially written especially for the production by a local musician and writer. The title track is sung by local artiste Chloe Leigh, and backed by The Fabulous Replays. Verity Jo Spencer Hall sings "Give it Wings", and International Comedy Entertainer Stevie Spit sings "Don't Block Out The Light", all of these penned by Peter Taylor. The team are immensely proud of the high standards achieved by these very talented performers. Furthermore, all 3 singers play parts in the film. At this point dear reader, we would ask you to remember this is a no budget production and what has just been described to you is

unprecedented and historically noteworthy. Bringing us to 2014, a team was formed to plan and organise this mammoth task. Julie Kay took on the thankless task of fund raising and has grafted constantly. Even battling to agree locations for events that were not for charity at times seemed insurmountable, but to her credit, she just kept going. Yvonne Haughton helped with the translations. In fact, Yvonne translated the script for the Subtitles that will appear on screen for the Spanish viewers. Clive Gray is a computer and technical wizard and has been in charge of all things technical, Clive is also a Director of Siesta Productions, a company we had to set up in order to legalise all the requests to shoot the film in and around Torrevieja. Local Radio Station owner and presenter Rai Woods came to the rescue and directed the film when our pre-arranged production team failed to travel from the UK due to unforeseen circumstances, and took under his wing as an assistant, Billie Anthony'Gaddess. Billie, along with Philip Stephen Routledge, wrote the screen play. Add into the mix, the legal advice of Charlotte Howarth, and there you have the basics of your hard working production team who had absolutely no idea just what they were letting themselves in for. With a Quantum leap, lets jump forward to 1st September 2015, it's 40ºC and a bunch of people arrived at the Delfin Submarine in Torrevieja for a weeks shooting. It was hot on the harbour and hotter still in the submarine. They came packed and ready as if to stay for a week of Sundays. Cheesecake, sandwiches, tea and water all at the ready along with our 2 brand new cameras. Here it would be expedient to explain a couple of things. The first question asked in the heat was, "Who's Idea was this, to start shooting on the 1st of September in all this heat?” “Yours Billie” was the answer! Tom Watt, the only cast member to wear a suit below deck in about 50ºC heat and without so much as an ounce of sweat asked, 'How the hell did you blag a Submarine?' Jokingly Rai said 'We haven't cleared it yet - so hurry up!' The rest, as they say, is history. Over the coming months, on large boats,

small boats, jet ski's and aircraft, they grafted. Not to mention the fabulous cars acquired by Yvonne that graced the set. To top everything off, actors flying from the UK at their own expense just to be involved and finally on the conclusion of filming, the very sexy ladies from the film made a 2016 Calendar to raise much needed funds are currently on sale. "The Cucaracha Club" Feature Film has its World Premier in Torrevieja on March 10th at the Virgen Del Carmen Theatre. The stars will start arriving at the Red Carpet a little after 18:30 so get down there early, get your souvenir programme and get ready to grab some autographs and selfies. The Trailer and Music Video to the title track are available to view on You Tube. Just search for The Cucaracha Club or Siesta Productions. The Cucaracha Club single is available for download from iTunes and other download sites. For further information, visit our website, www.Siesta.Productions or email info@ siesta.productions

Dive Right In! Have you ever been home watching Michael Phelps or a diving competition on TV and wondered if the water had to be set at a special temperature? I have, plenty of times too. This is what has led me to today’s article: What is the ideal temperature for commercial swimming pools? Competitive Swimming Temperature Regulations Turns out there are rules for water temperature for competitive swimming. Olympic swimming, the Red Cross and FINA (The international governing body of swimming, diving, water polo, synchronized swimming and open water diving), have set the water temperature for competitive swimming between 77° to 82° F (25°28°C), and 81°F (27°C) for synchronized swimming. Warmer water is less dense and therefore less friction as a swimmers body moves through it. Standard water temperatures ensure that all performances are on a level state of conditions. This research answered my original question, and then I got to thinking about what would happen if these regulations were not in place and the water was either too hot or cold? What would be the consequences? Let’s explore those topics next. What Temperature is Too Warm for a Commercial Pool? Pools with water that is too warm can be harmful to swimmers in a number of ways; dehydration, muscle cramps and overheating of the body are just some of the complications athletes can suffer from when the water is too warm. Water chemistry is another factor that comes into play when the water is too warm; it is very problematic to treat warm water with chemicals. Bacteria, algae and other organisms thrive under warm water conditions; this is obviously harmful not just for athletes but the general public in a commercial swimming pool, for competitive pools the water should be no higher than 82°F (28°C), for recreational pools the recommended maximum is 84°F (29°C). What Temperature is Too Cold for a Commercial Pool? The obvious hazard with cold water is that it shocks the system. But there are more dangerous aspects to it too, when the water is too cold, it can have fatal effects to the swimmers heart, those with heart problems can go into cardiac arrest. When the pool water is too cold the chemical reactions slow down, chlorine demand slows down, which can create over chlorination issues if the dosage rate is not adjusted. Another issue that may arise is the fact that most Salt Chlorine Generators will not operate if the water temperature is below roughly 60°F (15°C). Most hotels and resorts keep the temperature of their pools at a comfortable 82° to 85°F (27° to 29°C). This is warm enough for comfortable swimming and lounging. Same for most condominium units institutional and public pools.-http://www.aquacal.com/

It is not to be ignored, the microblading technique can create crisp and more defined strokes. The correct pressure, distance to the neighbour strokes and workflow are crucial. Especially for the healing process this is very important. Freshly made it looks perfect. To prevent any disappointment after a few weeks there is much to be considered. A touch-up is almost not avoidable for young skin. A mature skin takes pigments better and due to slower cell division does not lose it as quickly. When doing a touch-up with microblading the strokes do not become smudgy or blurry. However, with the machine they will become wider until they blur into each other completely. With microblading the same strokes can be passed over more often, without making it wider. Always keeping a crispy and defined stroke pattern.

March in the Spanish Garden

Take and plant up spring cuttings of geraniums, echiums, margaritas, leonothus, rosemary, sage etc.. Start to fill gaps in the garden but wait until inland frosts are past before planting the more tender plants. Start a regular programme of spraying fruit trees and bushes and vulnerable plants such as geraniums with appropriate eco-sprays. Start to plant out plantlets for summer harvests and sow seeds for tender plants such as squash, courgettes, tomatoes and peppers that will not be planted out until late April and May. If not already done plant seed potatoes and Jerusalem artichoke tubers. When the unusually log wet period ends complete the winter cut back in the flower garden and of hedges and trees. In view of the water shortages last year and the current low volumes of stored water in the reservoirs install some roof guttering and water barrels/tanks. Enjoy harvesting seasonal peas, broad beans and asparagus.

Sieve out the ready compost in the compost heap to top up raised beds and prepare bean trenches for later planting. Start to mow lawns and give a

spring feed. Once you have a dry day or two complete the laying of paths and terraces and the construction of water features so that plants can be planted around them for spring and summer colour. Give ponds an annual clean out cutting back excessive root growth and splitting plants to enlarge groupings or give away.

HOW TO NEGOTIATE ROUNDABOUTS If you are unsure about the correct way to negotiate roundabouts, here are some simple rules to help you enter and exit roundabouts safely and in the right lane. APPROACHING ROUNDABOUTS It’s important to remember to give way to traffic already on the roundabout. If the roundabout is outside urban areas of towns or cities, keep right. If the roundabout is in a built-up area inside a town or city and the lanes are clearly marked, you should use the lane that best corresponds to the exit you need to take. LEAVING ROUNDABOUTS This causes the most confusion amongst drivers. Which lane to choose? Why do I get beeped at if I’m in the right lane? Drivers must exit roundabouts from the right hand lane, because the only way to leave the roundabout is by turning right. This doesn’t mean we always have to enter the roundabout from the right hand lane. It depends on the exit we need to take. However this simple rule,

Microsoft has started taking orders for a developers' edition of its Hololens augmented reality headset. The test kit will cost $3,000 (£2,160) and will be sent to buyers in March. Augmented reality glasses overlay computer-generated images on the wearer's real-world surroundings, unlike virtual reality which replaces the entire field of vision with images. One expert said augmented reality devices were still at an "experimental" stage. "I don't expect Hololens to be a mass market product due to its pricing," said Piers Harding-Rolls of IHS Technology. "Like the early VR headsets, this will appeal to technology enthusiasts with large amounts of disposable income. "But I think we're a good few years away from compelling consumer AR smart glasses which have the desirable content and are cheap enough to drive a broader interest in the technology." First apps Microsoft has stressed its developers' edition of Hololens is designed for app creators, to encourage the production of software for the device before it is more widely available. The company said consumer availability would follow "further down the line". It also detailed the first seven native programs available for Hololens. Among them are: Skype - for video calling friends and family HoloTour - which lets the wearer look at 360 degree images of world cities HoloStudio - lets developers build 3D objects RoboRaid - a first-person shooting game The device will also run a game called Young Conker - a spin-off of cult hit Conker's Bad Fur Day, which told the story of a foul-mouthed squirrel trying to get home to his girlfriend. A video of Young Conker has been

negatively received by fans of the original game, who have eagerly been awaiting a sequel aimed at mature audiences. Why would you ever do this? This is by far the worst thing that could possibly happen to the Conker franchise," commented one disappointed gamer on YouTube. Microsoft said it had chosen Conker because he was "the right size to believably show up in the player's world" and was "famous for breaking the fourth wall and talking directly to the player". Absent from the list of launch apps was Minecraft, the hugely popular building game, which had featured heavily in Hololens demonstrations and previews. Tech specs Microsoft says Hololens will run as a fully self-contained device running Windows 10, powered by an Intel chip. Wearers see "hologram-style" images overlaying the real world The company says it has developed a unique "holographic processing unit" that can map the wearer's environment and recognise gestures while rendering images at the same time. Gestures, glance and control allow the wearer to interact with the software, and the helmet supports Bluetooth accessories - the first of which is a "clicker" button users can hold. "I think Hololens has the potential to find traction in niche commercial applications where pricing is less of an issue," said Mr Harding-Rolls. "I see consumer AR as more embryonic than VR and still very much at an experimental stage." Bbc.com

in practice, can be more complex. Let us see some examples. 1st EXIT RIGHT Enter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate and exit roundabout. CONTINUING STRAIGHT ON (e.g. 2nd EXIT STRAIGHT AHEAD) Enter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate prior to exit and leave roundabout. TURNING LEFT OR CHANGING DIRECTION (e.g. 3rd OR FINAL EXIT) Enter roundabout keeping to left hand side lane. Stay in lane until you have passed the exit before your turn off, then change lane by indicating right and giving other road users sufficient time to anticipate your manoeuvre. Don’t forget that drivers circulating in the outside lanes have priority, so use your mirrors to ensure you are not blocking them as you change lanes. It added: “The winner was shortlisted by a panel of judges including the all-female winning

Suw Charman-Anderson, who founded the annual celebration of women in Stem, Ada Lovelace Day, told the BBC she had had reservations about the Pretty Curious campaign from the beginning. “EDF Energy chose to link appearance and interest in Stem through the title of their campaign, despite many people pointing out that it was demeaning to girls,” she said. “Rather than challenging stereotypes, the focus on girls’ looks rather than their intelligence reinforces them. “EDF Energy have failed to understand both the nature of the problem [of women in Stem] and the negative impacts that their publicity stunt may well have on girls who took part with genuine enthusiasm and excitement.

‘Girls in tech’ competition won by boy

The Pretty Curious challenge was opened up to both sexes but the wider campaign is still aimed at teenage girls, EDF said EDF Energy has been criticised after a 13-year-oldboy won a competition that was part of a campaign to attract teenage girls to the fields of science, technology, engineering and maths. Children were asked to think of ideas for a connected home bedroom product. EDF said that while its Pretty Curious programme is still aimed at girls, the UK competition was later opened up to all 11 to 16-year-olds. It continues to share the same website and branding as the girls’ scheme. The BBC understands that the decision had been made to open the competition up to both genders in the interests of fairness, and that the contest attracted “a couple of hundred” entries. Following three events held in the UK for girls last year, the contest was extended online and made available to boys as well. The winner’s idea was for a games controller which harnesses kinetic energy from thumb action using wind-up triggers. Three of the four runners-up, whose ideas included smart curtains, a smart fridge and a sleep monitor, were submitted by girls. “We were really impressed with the ideas which were submitted. It’s exciting to see so many young people getting involved in this type of initiative and engaging with Stem (science, technology, engineering and maths). We hope more young people will be inspired to pursue Stem subjects at school and consider Stem careers in future,” said Amy Edmundson, an electrical maintenance technician at EDF. WhatsApp is killing support for BlackBerry and other old platforms If you’re a WhatsApp user with an older device, I have some bad news for you: your OS may no longer be supported by next year. To summarize, WhatsApp will only be available on Android 2.3+, iOS and Windows phone 8.1+ “by the end of 2016.” In total, it’s ending support for: All BlackBerry OS devices, even the newish BlackBerry 10 Nokia S40 Nokia Symbian S60 Android 2.1 and Android 2.2 Windows Phone 7.1 That said, the company

doesn’t say if it will remove its software from the respective app stores or if it will just stop updating the app. Either way, it means those users will miss out on any new features and perhaps be totally incompatible if the WhatsApp makes any major changes to the software by the end of the year. For US users this may not be much of a big deal – WhatsApp says the big three OS’s account for 99.5 percent of sales today – some regions of the world where BlackBerry devices or older OS’s are still

fairly popular will suffer more. Still, you can’t really blame WhatsApp, as it’s supported more platforms than the vast majority of competitors for some time no. It’s somewhat surprising they held out on older phones for so long; I mean, who still updates on Symbian? If you are on one of the soonto-be-unsupported operating systems, WhatsApp is offering obvious advice not everyone will be happy to hear: upgrade to a newer phone. http://thenextweb.com/

Netflix users cry out as it aggressively blocks hacks that give access to US library

Netflix said it was going to declare war on users that took advantage of VPN services and DNS hacks to gain access to the US library, and it wasn’t kidding: a number of common methods for obscuring your location have been blocked entirely in the last week. Users poured into a thread on Reddit this weekend reporting that Netflix was detecting their VPN sessions

and showing an error as of the last week, and that many of them have struggled to find an alternative that worked for more than a few days. Services like Private Internet Access, ExpressVPN, Mullvad and more stopped allowing access to US Netflix in the last week as the company blocked them — and users aren’t happy. DNS tricks like Unblock-US, which don’t require complex setup, have also stopped working this week. Others, like Unotelly, have quietly removed features that allowed non-US residents access to the service, bowing to pressure from Netflix by adding terms that explicitly disallow using its service for breaking geo-blocking. Netflix also appears to have moved to block users that created their own VPN using a self-hosted server.

The company has blocked entire IP address ranges from DigitalOcean, Linode and Amazon Web Services in an effort to prevent the tactic. It’s possible the lockdown is simply a game of cat and mouse, with unblocking companies eventually out-maneuvering the streaming giant, though the scale of blocking we’re seeing this time around is unprecedented. VPN providers were confident that they could win the game, but now it’s not looking quite so likely, given so many are offline. There are a number of other ways Netflix could move to further detect overseas customers accessing georestricted content easily, such as using your credit card’s region to restrict which version of the service you can see. http://thenextweb.com/

‘Golden Visas’ for Luxury Home Purchase Attracts 911 Million Euros in Two Years

Number of Homes Completed to November Fell by 5.5% Between January and November of 2015, the construction of some 41,424 homes were completed in Spain, which represents a decline of 5.5% compared to the same period of 2014, when 43,823 were completed, according to data from the Ministry of Public Works. Thus, El Mundo reported that the number of homes completed in Spain to November 2015 remains in negative rates, after accumulating, up to the end of 2014, seven years of declines.

up until November, 41,102 of them (99.2%) corresponded to private developer projects, while 322 of the homes (0.8%) related to public administrations works. Compared to a year earlier, the construction of housing by private developers fell by 5.2%, and those related to public administrations declined by 31%.

Since the Spanish Government approved the adoption of the Law on Entrepreneurs in 2013 up until the end of 2015, a total of 1,189 of the so-called Golden Visas have been awarded to foreign investors for the purchase of real estate in Spain with a value of over 500,000 euros. During this two year period, the level of investment involved in these transactions has reached some 910.6 million euros. Russian and Chinese real estate investors accounted for over 65% of the house purchases entitling buyers to obtain a residence permit in Spain. Specifically, in these two years, the Russians were responsible for over 35% of the transactions for luxury homes (417) to a value of 328 million euros, while a total of 363 transactions (30.5%) were carried out by Chinese investors, amounting to 268.4 million euros. Also obtaining Golden Visas for the purchase of luxury homes, albeit on a much lesser scale, were investors from the Ukraine, Venezuela and the Middle East. The analysis by province shows that the majority of the foreign investors opted for dwellings located on the coast. Except for Madrid, the top five provinces with most transactions are located on the coast. Barcelona registered most transactions (490 and 41.2% of the total), followed by Malaga, with 211 acquisitions (18%), Madrid with 183 (16%), then Girona, Alicante and Valencia. Cinco Días reported that the data for visas granted for the purchase of housing is in line with the quarterly statistics published by the Association of Registrars. In the fourth quarter of last year, foreign buyers were responsible for 14.38% of the home purchases carried out in Spain, a new record in their comparable series. Six European countries lead this classification: the United Kingdom; France; Germany; Sweden; Belgium and Italy, followed by China, which accounts for 0.55% of the total home purchases in Spain and 3.88% of those made by foreigners, and Russia (0.43% of the total purchases and 3% of those by foreign buyers). kyero.com

Spain’s House Prices Forecast to Rise by 6% to 2017

Winter economic forecasts published by the European Commission earlier this month indicate that Spain and Ireland, two of the European countries which have suffered most from the bursting of the housing bubble, will again start to register increases in their property prices over the next few years, with Ireland expected to see real prices of housing rise by 6.5% up until 2017, and Spain’s house prices estimated to increase by 6% in the same period. The price of housing in Malta is also expected to rise by 6%. In contrast, the EC forecasts that Greece will experience a further drop in the price of housing, by around 1.5%, and that house prices will also fall in Belgium, France and Bulgaria. The EC highlighted that the price of housing in relation to disposable income stood in Spain at 10.1 years of economic effort in 2014, far from the 15.6 years required in 2007, when prices reached their peak levels, and the 8.6 years required in 2000. The situation in Ireland was similar to Spain, with house prices in relation to income standing at 13 years’ economic effort in 2000, rising to 16.8 years required in 2007 and falling to 11 years in 2014. In the Spanish housing market, as well as the number of years’ income required to buy a home having fallen over the years, the number of housing transactions closed each year have also declined. According to the National Statistics Institute’s data, a total of 354,132 housing transactions were carried out in 2015, reaching a level similar to those transacted in 2011 (359,824). However, the figure is less than half the number carried out in 2007, when a total of 775,300 home sales were registered. El Economista reported that another of the aspects that has changed most is the volume of capital loaned for home mortgages. In absolute terms, this has fallen from almost 300,000 million euros loaned in 2006 and 2007, to a little over 41,000 million euros in 2014. Moreover, the amount awarded in each home mortgage loan has also plummeted, by 37% on average, to stand at 106,655 euros in November 2015. kyero.com

March 2016

Positive start to 2016 for Spanish prices with two indices showing growth all round

The residential property market in Spain has started 2016 positively with the latest figures showing that the average value of housing increased in January.

47.8%, in Catalonia by 46.6%, in Asturias by 45.6%, in Madrid by 44.7%, in Andalucía by 42.7%, in Extremadura by 41.6% and in Cantabria by 40.1%.

The latest data from property appraisal company Tinsa, shows that the Balearic and Canary Islands have seen prices rise the most, up 5.4% month on month and 3.2% year on year. While overall prices increased by 2.9% compared to December 2015 and are up 1.1% year on year.

In January average prices increased in 10 regions. The biggest rise was in the Canary Islands with growth of 2.1%, followed by Aragón up 1.2%, Valencia up 1%, Andalucía and Catalonia both up 0.9%, Castilla-La Mancha, Navarra and La Rioja all up 0.8%, the Balearic Islands up 0.2% and Asturias up 0.1%.

Prices in large cities increased by 2.9% year on year while priced on the Mediterranean Coast rose by 1% and in Metropolitan areas they increased by 0.8%. But in smaller towns the market is not doing as well, with average prices falling by 2.2% year on year although there was a small rise month on month. It also shows that since the peak of the market in 2007, the average property prices is still down by 41% but there are regional variations. For example, since the peak prices are down 48% on the Mediterranean Coast, down 44.2% in large cities and down 43.5% in Metropolitan areas. The gap is less in the Balearic and Canary Islands, with an accumulated decline of 29.1% from peak while in smaller town they are down 37.3%. Property portal Fotocasa’s latest data is also positive. However, year on year this index is still showing an average decline in prices of 0.3%. In a Rioja prices are down 54.7% since 2007, in Castilla-La Mancha by 52.2%, in Navarra by 52.1%, in Aragón by 51.4%, in Murcia by 50.1%, in Valencia by

In contrast, Extremadura recorded the biggest fall in prices with a decline of 1% in January, followed by the Basque Country down 0.9%, Galicia down 0.6%, Cantabria down 0.5%, Castilla y León and Murcia both down 0.4%, and Madrid down 0.2%. The Basque Country remains the most expensive of Spain’s regions, with an average price of €2,730 per square meter, followed by Madrid at €2,197 and Catalonia at €2,064. The regions with the most economical second hand housing prices are Castilla-La Mancha at €1,058 per square meter, Extremadura at €1,100 and Murcia at €1,145. The index also shows that 30 of the 50 Spanish provinces saw month on month price rises, ranging from 2.6% in Las Palmas to 0.1% in Asturias. In Burgos house prices remained stable over December 2015, while the 19 remaining provinces registered price declines, ranging between the a fall of 3.3% in Ourense to a fall of 0.2% recorded in Madrid. http://www.propertywire.com/

Tips for Applying Paste Wax

property services

Put a spoonful of wax, about the size of a golf ball, in a square of 100-percent-cotton fabric. Wrap the fabric around the wax ball and knead it until soft. Rub in a circular motion, one small area at a time, until the waxing is complete. When the surface dulls, wipe off the excess wax. Use a clean, soft cotton cloth and turn it frequently. Repeat waxing and wiping until the entire piece is waxed. If you notice a streak, keep wiping to remove excess wax. Polish the wood, with a soft cloth or lamb's-wool pad attached to an electric drill or power buffer. If the wax smears, wipe with a soft cloth and continue buffing. For a deep shine, apply a second coat of wax in the same manner; to maintain waxed furniture, dust with a lamb's-wool duster. Never use liquid or aerosol furniture polishes because they can dissolve the wax and leave a hazy film. For fine furniture or treasured family

heirlooms, use this three-step cleaning and care routine. 1. Clean approximately every year with a commercial cleaning product (such as Formby's Deep Cleaning Build-Up Remover) using #0000 steel wool. Work with the grain and follow product directions carefully. 2. Restore as needed, especially from sun fading, using a commercial finish restoring product such as Howard Restor-A-Finish. Choose a shade closest to the wood stain and apply with #0000 steel wool to a small section at a time. Work with the grain of the wood and use light to moderate pressure. Immediately wipe with a soft, lint-free cloth, such as cheesecloth. 3. Feed as a monthly Prompt and reliable service, routine using an orange oil or wax (try Feed-Nno job too small. viewpoint 25 Politics in Alqueria: An Overview Huercal-Overa Ladies Darts Team

John MacDonald (El Sordo) www.caratacus.eu

www.soltimes.com

Alqueria’s political system evolved out of necessity. Documentary and archaeological evidence suggested that Alqueria was completely bypassed by the Christian Reconquest of Isabella and Ferdinand. The Spanish state used this opportunity to wash their hands of the dysfunctional village with the result that Alqueria became stateless. The Republic of Alqueria came into being and a political system suited to the unique needs of the community developed. It has been said that all Spaniards are born anarchists and the State brings them more in less into a condition of conformity albeit grudgingly. In Alqueria this conversion never happened and these anarchistic tendencies have become more acute. To form a political system from ‘scratch’ and with these tendencies at the fore wasn’t so much a challenge but a ‘labour of love’ or as some said a ‘labour of lunacy’. The first principle of the anarchists is ‘life without authority’, which means no laws and no control. The people of the Village Republic were left to behave according to their own moral code. Considering the inherent hatred shown by the opposing barrios this did not bode well. In fact a state of undeclared warfare exists punctuated by rioting and general civil unrest. José Cabrasilbido, the Village policeman is in a difficult position. If there are no laws he has no authority and is powerless during these periods of strife. He decided his best course of action is to join in the affrays by hurling

the cobblestones of Alqueria which are the projectiles of choice. He is issued with a side-arm but as this is plastic and has ´Dirty Harry Special´ written on the barrel it doesn’t pose a threat. Rodriquez alone wants a dictatorship but he is always outvoted. He would have liked to have created all sorts of statutes where the rights of the individual are restricted and controlled. He has however to satisfy himself with cancelling laws that were never enacted in the first place. He would issue pompous statements suggesting that in the best interests of the citizens of Alqueria this or that piece of legislation would be struck from the statute book. In fact the statute book doesn’t exist and even the constitution is written on the back of a cigarette packet with one of Manuela’s eyeliner pencils. The income from Remitroot sales is shared between the population according to need with a small retention for the maintenance of the pueblo and José Cabrasilbido’s wage, the only paid official in Alqueria. How the ruling coalition of Manuela, Antonio Poyato and Loco Paco spend their time is a mystery but the sounds of merriment coming from the town-hall is perhaps a clue. Considering this brief description of the Alquerian political structure one wonders what the role of the government of Alqueria actually is but surely the same question can be asked of all governments.

‘Follow me.’ I followed the immaculately presented young nurse from the private hospital in Huercal-Overa as she dashed from Reception to – when she stopped dead and shot out ‘Sit.’ As there were no dogs in sight, I sat. ‘Go in there. Take your bra off, but leave your sweater on.’ This is possible, but usually executed the other way around by normal people. ‘Take your jeans off.’ I sat down and began to take my boots off. ‘Leave your boots on.’ I straightened up and looked at her. If you think my jeans are coming off over the top of my boots you are a deluded optimist, I thought. I showed willing by undoing my belt buckle. ‘Lie here.’ I lay there, and she heaved my jeans down as far as my knees. ‘Ajfavha8rerjpjc;kf.’ I said ‘Eh?’ She replied ‘Eiqw[fujadgjitwukg.’ I repeated ‘Eh?’ then I realised that she had spoken English. She grabbed my hand and started vigorously pummelling it. I know what’s coming next, I thought. However, I had not taken into account that she is a member of the Huercal-Overa

By Jos Biggs

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk Ladies Darts Team, and this was her practice night! She went for a 6 dart finish before she found the spot and installed a junction box in the back of my hand. I thought you contrary cow, and squeaked vociferously. She grabbed my ‘bad’ arm and went to yank it above my head. It goes above my head no problem, but I wasn’t going to let her pull it about - if she’d asked nicely and acted gently I would have put my arm up, so I let her sweat for it. With much wincing and exaggerated noises of pain, I gradually put my arm up, and without further ado I was slid mechanically into a mysterious donut.

LEGAL CORNER WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR

If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com - www.daviessolicitors.com MENTIONING A TRUST ON A SPANISH WILL IS ASKING FOR TROUBLE. SOMETIMES WHAT IS LEGALLY POSSIBLE AND WHAT IS PRACTICAL IS NOT THE SAME THING. THIS IS A PRIME EXAMPLE. Question: I had a Spanish will made out for myself and my wife some time ago. We have recently hired a solicitor to handle a conveyance and he has taken a look at the wills and told us they are not good and that we should make new ones. We are now uncertain of what to do. We have attached the wills for you to take a look at them. Our instruction to our original solicitor in Spain was for him to do exactly what we did in the UK on our English wills. He said that since the Directive 650/2012 this can be done. Answer. As my granny would always say: a little knowledge can cause a lot of damage. There is no doubt, the will is dreadful. You must change it. I doubt the person who prepared your will has ever dealt with probate in Spain and in fact I doubt the person is even a solicitor. ( I say this because any solicitor I know would tell you that your will is asking for trouble). The will essentially translates the English will you handed over and sets up a trust to protect your children versus your second wife. Even though Directive 650/2012 allows English law to be applied (by choice of the testator) to how an estate is distributed in Spain, using institutions like trusts will cause endless problems and expenses for your heirs because Trusts are not understood in Spain the same way as in UK. So Certifications of English law (which are very expensive) will be required to help wind up the estate (by explaining the content of English law). To this you

will have to add a lot of problems with Spanish Inheritance tax (remember Directive 650/2012 has no effect on the taxation of the estate). In Spain it is the beneficiary that pays inheritance tax and not the estate. Descendants and spouse in Andalucía are exempt if they each receive less than 175,000€. In this case the trustee is a non-family member and as he has faculty to dispose of assets, the Spanish tax office could interpret that he is in control of the estate and is the person who owes the tax. As non-family he would receive a large tax bill. (This could all be battled out but it would be a mess.) Conclusion: Keep things sensible and uncomplicated. In this case achieve what you want using methods that are common practice in Spain. (Even though with the Directive it is possible to have the will run under English law you must remember that probate will need to be obtained in Spain, so making a will that nobody understands in Spain is not a good idea It would be up to your heirs to prove what UK law says and I can tell you from plenty of experience that dealing with Trusts in Spain is nightmare scenario.) In this case leave the life possession of your property to you wife and the residual value to your children. With the values you have sent me the estate will be exempt, probate will be simple and both your children and your wife will be fully protected as you asked for. Michael Davies. Abogado.

Michael Davies is a Spanish Abogado and has been practicing law in Almería since 1993. He is member of the Law societies of Almería and Madrid and has offices in Mojacar and Almeria High Street.

I spent five years of my life living in Cyprus, so pastry, feta and green veg will always have a special place in my life. There, pies are often stuffed with horta, or wild mountain greens. In the UK, I often substitute them with leeks, chard or beetroot leaves in winter and (if I’m lucky), nettles or purslane in spring. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/ gas mark 4. Heat the oil in a frying pan and add the garlic. Sweat for a minute, then add the leeks, chard, rice and nuts. Cook for a couple of minutes and let it cool. Add the Ingredients herbs and feta, season lightly and Serves 6 stir until well combined. Brush the bottom of a 22cm 2 tbsp olive oil 4 garlic cloves, finely chopped baking dish with some melted butter and line with a filo sheet. 150g cooked leeks Brush it again and repeat with 150g chard another three sheets. The ends of 50g easy-cook rice the pastry should be hanging over 50g walnuts or pecans, toasted the side. Make sure the remaining three filo sheets are covered with a and roughly chopped damp towel, so they don’t dry out. 1 tbsp parsley, chopped Put the filling in and drape the 1 tbsp dill, chopped overhanging filo on top of the filling. 1 tbsp mint, chopped Then take the remaining three filo 150g feta, crumbled sheets and scrunch them on top of 6 sheets filo pastry the pie. Brush with the remaining ½ tbsp sesame seeds butter, scatter with the sesame and poppy seeds and bake for 25-30 1 tsp poppy seeds minutes. 80g butter

GREAT FUN NIGHT OUT

One batch of charred leeks, four recipe ideas. A single batch of cheap leeks will lend sweetness to your supper. Try them in these recipes from Olia Hercules (www.theguardian.com)

Ingredients About 500g leeks, washed 1 fresh bay leaf A few sprigs of thyme Salt and black pepper Extra virgin olive oil, for drizzling

Charred Leeks

This is an easy way to pre-cook leeks, so they are ready to use at any time of the week . Make sure not to overcook them. They should sof ten a lit tle, but should still retain their shape.

Trim only the ragged green tips of the leeks, keeping most of the tougher, green stalk. Slice the leeks into 4cm-thick cylinders. Put the tougher green parts into a large frying pan all in one layer. Add just enough cold water to cover the leeks. Crush a bay leaf in your hand, then add it to the pan along with the thyme and a little salt and pepper. Bring to a light simmer, then cook for about 5 minutes. Add the white parts of the leek and cook for another 3 minutes. Gently drain, then spread across a couple of large plates, so they cool quickly. Toss in a little olive oil and keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week.

Decline of Pollinators Poses Threat to World Food Supply, Report Say

March 2016

Top 10 foods to try in Spain

Whether you're taking a city break in Barcelona or Madrid, or have plumped for a countryside or coastal retreat, the food of Spain is packed with flavour and character. From tasty tapas to superb seafood and traditional roasts, Spanish food is all about making the most of the best local produce. We asked travel writer Annie Bennett, to pick ten of the best dishes to try on your travels. Don't leave Spain without trying... Gazpacho The reddest, ripest tomatoes, olive oil, garlic, bread, peppers and cucumber are blended until silky smooth, then chilled and poured into bowls or glasses. So delicious, so refreshing. In Andalucía in southern Spain, people have it every day in summer and there is always a jug on the counter in tapas bars. Also try salmorejo from Córdoba, a thicker version that is often served with pieces of Ibérico ham on the top. Paella In the Valencia region, they claim you can eat a different rice dish every day of the year, but let’s stick with the most traditional version for now. Ingredients for paella Valenciana include chicken or rabbit, saffron, runner beans and butter beans. But the all-important element is the rice, ideally the bomba or calasaparra varieties grown on Spain’s east coast, which are particularly good for absorbing all the flavours. Tortilla Española Eggs, potatoes, onions… that’s it – and some purists even consider that adding onion is a gastronomic crime of the highest order. The Spanish omelette is so much more than the sum of its parts. The potatoes and onions are slow fried in olive oil then mixed with the beaten eggs for the flavours to mix before cooking. Add chorizo, ham, spinach, courgettes or whatever you have to hand to make a tasty meal out of next to nothing. Gambas al ajillo You walk into a tapas bar, the barman is handing a customer an earthenware dish of sizzling prawns, the tantalising

aroma hits your nostrils and you just have to order some too. To recreate it at home, just fry some sliced garlic and green chilli in olive oil, throw in the prawns for a couple of minutes and add some parsley. Couldn’t be simpler, couldn’t be tastier. Tostas de tomate y jamón Black pigs roam among the holm oak trees in western Spain in search of the acorns that give marbled magenta Ibérico ham its distinctive nutty flavour. Rub thick pieces of toast with garlic and tomato, pour on some olive oil and top with slices of jamón for a quick, delicious lunch. Patatas bravas Perhaps the most ubiquitous of tapas, patatas bravas vary quite a bit around the country, but all versions involve chunks of fried potato. In Madrid, bravas sauce is made with sweet and spicy pimentón – Spanish paprika – olive oil, flour and stock – but never tomatoes. Some people add garlic, some a dash of fino sherry, while others selfishly insist of keeping their secret ingredients to themselves. Pollo al ajillo Any Spaniard will tell you that the best garlic chicken ever is the one their grandmother makes. And of course they are right. Unpeeled cloves of garlic are fried in olive oil to flavour it, then taken out before adding pieces of chicken. When that is cooked, the garlic goes back in with some rosemary, thyme and some dry sherry or white wine. But there is no definitive recipe for this much-loved dish. Cochinillo asado People might claim they are going to Segovia to see its astounding Roman aqueduct, fairytale castle or elegant cathedral, but really all that is just to build up an appetite for lunch. And in Segovia that means either roast suckling pig or lamb. The meat is cooked in huge wood-fired ovens and is so tender it is cut with the side of an earthenware plate. http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/

The birds and the bees need help. Also, the butterflies, moths, wasps, beetles and bats. Without an international effort, a new report warns, increasing numbers of species that promote the growth of hundreds of billions of dollars’ worth of food each year face extinction. The first global assessment of the threats to creatures that pollinate the world’s plants was released by a group affiliated with the United Nations on Friday in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The summary will be posted online Monday. Pollinators, including some 20,000 species of wild bees, contribute to the growth of fruit, vegetables and many nuts, as well as flowering plants. Plants that depend on pollination make up 35 percent of global crop production volume with a value of as much as $577 billion a year. The agricultural system, for which pollinators play a key role, creates millions of jobs worldwide. Many pollinator species are threatened with extinction, including some 16 percent of vertebrates like birds and bats, according to the document. Hummingbirds and some 2,000 avian species that feed on nectar spread pollen as they move from flower to flower. Extinction risk for insects is not as well defined, the report notes, but it warned of “high levels of threat” for some bees and butterflies, with at least 9 percent of bee and butterfly species at risk. A bee collecting nectar in Bangkok. Pollinators, including some 20,000 species of wild bees, contribute to the growth of fruit, vegetables and many nuts. Credit Barbara Walton/European Pressphoto Agency The causes of the pressure on these creatures intertwine: aggressive agricultural practices that grow crops on every available acre eliminate patches of wildflowers and cover crops that provide food for pollinators. Farming also exposes the creatures to pesticides, and bees are under attack from parasites and pathogens, as well. Climate change has an effect, as well, especially in the case of bumblebees in North America and Europe, said Sir Robert Watson, vice chairman of the group and director of strategic development at the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research at the University of East Anglia. A warming world changes the territories of plants and pollinators, and changes the plants’ time of flowering, as well, leading to a troubling question, posed by Dr. Watson: “Will the pollinators be there when the flowers need them?” The group issuing the report, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, is made up of 124 countries, including the United States, and was formed through the United Nations in 2012. It resembles in some ways the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, with a focus on providing analysis and policy proposals to promote biodiversity. The group did not conduct new research, but synthesized current studies and analysis to reach its conclusions. The assessment, developed with the help of 80 experts, does not take a conclusive position on two issues that environmental activists have focused on intensely. The report states that the contribution of controversial chemicals known as neonicotinoids “is currently unresolved.” Recent research suggests that even when the pesticides are present at levels that do not have lethal effects on individual insects, concentrations in the hive may have long-term effects on colonies of wild and managed bees. The passionate opposition to these pesticides from many environmental activists, however, “has almost hijacked the whole question of what’s causing the declines,” said Simon Potts, a cochairman of the assessment and deputy director of the Centre for Agri-Environmental Research at Reading University. The report lays out many contributing factors beyond insecticides to the pressures on pollinators, and The popularity of pomegranates is on the rise. Girl forms unbreakable bond with her pet duck

FREEPORT, Maine --A lot of kids go to the park to see ducks, but 5-year-old Kylie Brown takes her duck to see the park. Snowflake swims around the pond and then he returns when called. Because Snowflake sincerely believes that Kylie is his mother, and the duck is not alone in this delusion.

"I'm his mom," Kylie said. When she was reminded that she is not really the duck's mom, she disagreed. "Yep, I'm his mom." Kylie first noticed Snowflake’s attachment the day the Browns brought him home last summer. For whatever reason, the duck imprinted on Kylie and just had to be by her side, no matter what the hour.

Todd Todd is a very lively 6 month old terrier type who walked into our La Marina Shop. He has been checked out by a vet and declared very fit. He has obviously been well looked after as he is used to people and other dogs. Todd loves travelling in a car. Todd is a small dog with a big personality.

11 week old brothers Lucas and Tito were found tied to the bumper of a car left in the Campo, and would certainly have died if they hadn’t been found. They are living in the APAH kennels and will only be small dogs when they are fully grown. To arrange to meet the brothers

“I don’t know if you’ve ever had a 2-year-old or a 4-year-old that wouldn’t leave home without its blankie -- she would not leave home without her duck. And at that point, nothing is negotiable.” Snowflake goes to the beach in summer, and sledding in winter. He’s been to soccer practice, gone on sleepovers, and he even went trick-or-treating as Olaf, the snowman from Frozen. Over time, because they both believe they belong together, Snowflake and Kylie have formed a bond like most of us will never know.

She really is going to make a great mom someday. Mostly because -- she already is.

Ever since the Jaguar E-Type was introduced fifty years ago, it has been hailed the world over as a style icon. Its curvaceous lines and incredibly low stance were synonymous with the rapidly changing times of the swinging sixties. And for most people, the idea of performing a top-to-bottom customisation of a classic E-Type is tantamount to sacrilege. However there is one company which is now offering another option, one which walks the fine line between gaudy customisation and respectful enhancement. Eagle, a company based in the south of England, have developed a car called the Speedster. The Eagle Speedster is based on an original E-Type, but almost every piece has been re-engineered and upgraded. The Eagle Speedster E-Type project originally started out as a one-off special order for a US collector. However as the car developed it became clear there was enough interest to invest in manufacturing additional cars.

Book Review

Tigers in Red Weather by Liza Klaussmann

www.carolnaylor.blogspot.com - www.carolesleynaylor.wordpress.com - naylorcl@hotmail.es

“ Houses, husbands, and midnight gin parties. Nothing’s going to change. Not in any way that really matters. It will be like always.” This is post-war America, full of expectation and excitement for the likes of cousin Nick and Helena seeking The Great Gatsby life of endless parties and self-indulgence galore. Both women were married: Helena had sadly lost Fen after 2 months of marriage but remarried in haste and moved to Hollywood with its glitz and glamour whilst Nick married Hughes out of love and desire hoping to lead an exciting life. Yes, hoping! The story interestingly, darts back and forth over two decades so you need to be on your toes and there are multiple narrators-in total five: Nick, her daughter Daisy, Helena, Hughes and Ed, Helena’s son. There are overlaps which serve as reminders to the readers of the events taking place as well as indicating the innermost thoughts and feelings of the characters. The characters are presented very much as a dysfunctional family, sad, lonely and unhappy. Too many lies, too many secrets. Tiger House is central to the plot because this is where the main characters unite to spend their long hot summers entertaining, dancing to the blues, indulging in excessive drinking and flirtatious behaviour and endless rounds of gossip. With all this apparent excitement and the passion of the heat and moment, boredom and disillusionment destroy the fervour. And, of course a brutal murder. Klaussmann has cleverly used Wallace Stevens’ poem Disillusionment At Ten O’ Clock, a lament, to illustrate the monotony of life starved of imagination in the title and at the end of the novel. We see this disillusionment particularly in Nick who hides her feelings and is grossly unhappy at discovering her husband’s betrayal. He was supposed to love her. Instead he made everything blank and turned her life gray. Excessive drink and one-night stands are the consequences. But does this fulfil her needs? Of course not. She hides her loneliness and unhappiness, admitting to making a mess of things. Badly damaged. Ed is the creative one but as a paradox one can perhaps say that creativity could also lead to destruction. There’s a fine dividing line between the two. He is different and has a distorted and unhealthy view of life and love. He believes that love is brutal and sudden causing permanent damage. He is creepy, following people, listening into private conversations to educate himself about people and what’s inside them. Hughes worries that there’s something seriously wrong with the kid. His behaviour is psychotic and he is dangerous. We are presented with a gruesome image of a mouse that he has trapped in the basement. He has crudely sliced it open and inserted a small toothpick which was sticking out of one of its eyes. If he does this to animals could he do this to human beings? That’s the worrying factor. 1959 is a significant time because a violent murder is committed and

witnessed by Ed. He then admits to having had some kind of inkling of the work he wanted to do in the future which sounds ominous doesn’t it? He describes this murder as some “kind of joy released, the closest thing to love.” Helena believes she is an innocent, easy prey because of her vulnerability mistaken for her gullibility. She believed that the world was cruel to innocents like herself. She grows to hate cousin Nick, alias the Bitch and deludes herself into thinking that Nick has prevented husband Avery from having contact with her. Avery supplies his wife with an abusive level of drugs to subdue her so that he can take advantage of her before abandoning her. Once weaned off the drugs she envelops herself into a boozy cocoon which basically has the same effect as losing touch with reality. She sees herself as a prisoner and she is trapped unable to escape. I have the most sympathy for Hughes. His betrayal happens on the spur of the moment during the war. Three precious liberty days spent in London and a chance encounter with a lonely WREN called Eva destroyed his peace of mind and he was saddled with guilt at betraying his young wife. “ He had promised to love and protect Nick and instead he had betrayed her. He was disgusted.” He blamed the war for turning everything upside down. He admits to having done things he isn’t proud of but he does love Nick and asks for forgiveness. He is a strong presence in the novel and protective of his wife and daughter. Nick also felt trapped. Hughes wanted life to be good and safe. She disliked the stuffiness and respectability. “Sometimes I want to rip my clothes off and go running down the street stark naked and screaming my head off.” She wanted them to be different and saw marriage like jumping off a cliff. “They were not supposed to be careful people.” Another reminder of F. Scott Fitzgerald. There’s an interesting discussion about monotony, that life isn’t always going to be full of adventure or excitement. All the little things one has to do every day can make life tedious. And I suppose we are talking about getting the right balance here aren’t we? They got it wrong and lived to regret it. Makes for powerful reading though… Don’t you agree??? Publisher: Picador. ISBN: 978-1-4472-1207-2

GREAT NEWS FOR MOTOR HOME OWNERS The freedom of travelling the world in a motor home is a wonderful experience. So why compromise your vehicle by holding back on its capabilities?

Motor Homes are normally built around a large van chassis and engine. Unfortunately the engines are not set up or tuned for optimum economy or power output for motor homes. Most manufacturers sell their vehicles all over the world and have to allow for differing conditions within each export market. Conditions such as climate, emissions regulations and fuel quality are all taken into account. They also have to take into account the average expectations of many commercial vehicle fleet buyers, who are quite happy to accept a compromise that copes adequately with average commercial use, not necessarily what is most effective when those same vehicles are converted for use as motorhomes. The great news is that today the engines on most turbo diesel engines can be tuned to increase the economy and performance without any component changes to the engine at all. Great Benefits Your vehicle’s throttle response is now sharper, turbo lag and flat spots have been eliminated, gear changes arrive sooner, your whole vehicle feels livelier, as though you had chosen the bigger engine option. These are just some of the benefits you will enjoy with a “Veloc Tuning” remap. How It is achieved by carefully changing the software within the vehicles “ECU” or “Engine Control Unit”. This is the brain of the engine that controls how the engine runs. How must air and fuel goes into the engine, the timing for the injection of the fuel, also the duration, and turbo boost pressure. All can be adjusted mostly by plugging into the vehicles “OBD” port or “On Board Diagnostics” port under the dashboard of the vehicle. Some vehicles require the ECU removing to make the tuning modification, and will take a little longer, but the end result is the same. Using state of the art equipment and the skill and training we have received, we can retune your engine to make these great improvements to save on fuel, and give very useful extra pulling power, also a smoother, happier running engine. FROM JUST 199€ FOR CARS TO BE REMAPPED, AND FROM 249€ FOR A MOTOR HOME. THE VALUE FOR MONEY IS OUTSTANDING. Vehicles that are still under warranty are not a problem, as the small software changes cannot be detected. In the event of the ECU requiring removal with an under warranty vehicle, we have an alternative solution that works in a different way, that will not affect the warranty. This is in the form of a “DTM” or “Digital Tuning Module” that connects to the engines loom under the bonnet. These high grade units are programmed for every specific vehicle. A big advantage is that they can easily be removed without trace by the owner. They are not quite as effective as a remap of the ECU, but do work for under warranty vehicles very well in most cases. We supply and fit the DTM units on a try before you buy basis. The cost of the DTM is a little higher than some remapping, however still very good value at just 349€ fitted. For full tuning details for your motor home or car, check out our “Motor Home” section on our website. Our tuning service is fully mobile, so will come to you on any Campsite, or your home along the Costas and inland Spain. We offer a lifetime software guarantee for all tuning work. Also a 30 day money back guarantee if you are not totally happy with the results. Then, in that case the vehicle will be returned to the original manufactures software. Also we always let you test drive your Motor Home before asking for any payment. We cover Costa Blanca, Costa Calida, Costa Almeria, and Costa del Sol. Discounts given for groups and friends, if the tuning is done on the same day, and location.

36 members and guest turned up for a very early start (1st tee time was 8, 36) upon arrival at 8am the place was swarming with Scandinavian members of the club jostling for their start times. Yes folks high season has arrived early this year and it could be a sign of things to come for us residents! As always at this time of year we must give preference to the “members” from tee 1 so our opening tee shots have to navigate between the gardens on the left and the water hazard on the right of the 10th hole. It’s clear to see from the score cards that this is not the easiest hole to begin on. Recent maintenance on the greens made putting a little more difficult than usual but I guess that it must be done. This also had an effect on the “2’s” competition as no one made a birdie on any of the par 3’s. There was €80 in the pot because this was rolled over from last week, this will be again rolled over to next week where the members will have 5 opportunities to win it as there are 5 par 3’s at Campoamor and if you add to that the short par 4 11th it could be 6 chances! The N.T.P. competition this week was sponsored by 2 time player of the month winner, Sverre Sonesen, yes he’s a Viking. At first I thought that he was feeling a little guilty after winning both January and February’s P.O.M. but then again

The recipients of the fine bottles of wine that he suppled were; Holes 6 & 13 Swede Alex Alm, Hole 9 Les Wilton and Hole 17 another Viking Per Skarnes. Winner of the visitor’s category was Swede S. Malgren with 25 pts. In the main competition the Bronze category results were; 4th J. Hillier 30 pts. 3rd Gunn Handeland 33 pts. 2nd Colin Marsden 34 pts. It appears that 3 weeks in Thailand fighting off the young Thia ladies didn’t sap his strength too much. And again for the 2nd time within a couple of weeks was Irishman Robbie Rea, who at 80 years young still managed the best score of the day, 35 pts. Well done Robbie, it must have something to do with your female Austrian Partner. Just what is it that she is feeding you on? In the Gold category the Vikings made a clean sweep, taking all 4 prizes. In 4th place was Dag Lovas with 31 pts. 3rd place was the Captain of one of their long ships or as they are known these days an oil tanker, Ole Rong with 32 pts. N.T.P. sponsor was in the prizes yet again taking 2nd place with 33 pts. And top of the Gold category was Norwegian, Henning Kyvag with 34 pts. Photo: Silver category winners. If you would like to play at any of our venues in a warm but competitive atmosphere you will find lots of information on our website at www. tmgs.org or follow us on Facebook/ TMGSGOLF or tweet us @TMGSGOLF failing all else you can still contact us by phone on 661 524 101

Electric cars 'will be cheaper than conventional vehicles by 2022'

Analysis predicts that the total cost of ownership of electric cars will dip below those with internal combustion engines in 2022 Electric cars will be cheaper to own than conventional cars by 2022, according to a new report. The plummeting cost of batteries is key in leading to the tipping point, which would kickstart a mass market for electric vehicles, Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) analysts predict. The large-scale roll-out of electric vehicles (EVs) is seen as vital in both cutting the carbon emissions that drive climate change and in dealing with urban air pollution, which leads to many premature deaths every year. But, despite subsidies in many countries, EVs remain more expensive than conventional cars and the limited range of battery-only cars is still a concern. Currently, just 1% of new cars sold are electric. However, the analysis published by BNEF on Thursday predicts that the total cost of ownership – combining purchase price and running costs – of battery-only cars will dip below those with internal combustion engines in 2022, even if the conventional cars improve their fuel efficiency by 3.5% a year. The analysis uses the US government’s projected oil price of $50-$70 (£36-£50) a barrel in the 2020s. If the price is $20, the tipping point is pushed back by between three and nine years. Salim Morsy, senior analyst at BNEF, said: “In the next few years, the cost-ofownership advantage will continue to lie with conventional cars, and we therefore don’t expect EVs to exceed 5% of sales in most markets – except where subsidies make up the difference. However, that cost comparison is set to change radically in the 2020s.” Colin McKerracher, lead analyst at BNEF, added: “At the core of this forecast is the work we have done on EV battery prices. Lithiumion battery costs have already dropped by 65% since 2010, reaching $350 per kWh in 2015. We expect EV battery costs to be well below $120 per kWh by 2030, and to fall further after that as new chemistries come in.” The report projects that 35% of global new car sales – 41m a year – will be EVs in 2040, with one in four of all cars being an EV by then. This would have a knock-on effect on global energy use, cutting oil consumption by 14% and using 8% of all electricity. New EV

sales could be as high as 50% in 2040 if they become widespread in fleets and ride-sharing schemes or as low as 25% if oil prices remain very low for many years. Previous predictions for EV sales have been overly optimistic. President Barack Obama predicted 1m electric cars in the US by 2015: in January that year the total was 280,000. But McKerracher said past predictions were based on very limited data on actual sales and on falling battery costs, while air pollution and fuel efficiency policies are getting tougher. The UK’s government’s official advisers, the Committee on Climate Change, say 60% of new car sales in the UK should be electric by 2030 to deliver the nation’s carbon cuts at the least cost. That is “very aggressive”, according to McKerracher, but he said EV sales will rise faster in countries that invest early in charging infrastructure or crack down on air pollution in cities. Climate change policies also will be important, he said: “If anyone takes the commitments made at the UN summit in Paris with any degree of seriousness, you have to decarbonise transport.” UK motorists appear to be warming to the idea of EVs, according to a new survey of 2000 drivers commissioned by BMW. It found 20% said their next new car would be electric, although 59% were unaware of the £5,000 subsidy currently on offer from the government. However, those wishing to take advantage will have to hurry, as the subsidy falls from April to £2,500-£4,500 depending on the model bought. http://www.theguardian.com/

Fifa presidential election: Gianni Infantino succeeds Sepp Blatter

The moment Gianni Infantino was named as the new president of Fifa Gianni Infantino has succeeded fellow Swiss Sepp Blatter as president of world football's governing body Fifa. The Uefa secretary general polled 115 votes, 27 more than closest rival Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim al-Khalifa. Prince Ali bin al-Hussein (four votes) and Jerome Champagne (0) were third and fourth respectively. Blatter, who had led Fifa since 1998, stood down last year and was later suspended from football for six years for breaching ethics guidelines. Infantino is a 45-year-old lawyer from Brig in the Valais region of Switzerland, less than six miles from Blatter's home town of Visp. He entered the presidential race when it became clear that Michel Platini, boss of European football's governing body Uefa, could not stand. "I

will work tirelessly to bring football back to Fifa and Fifa back to football," he said. "This is what we want to do." He added: "I feel a lot of emotion and have not realised yet what has happened today. It is still very fresh and it's been a long and exciting journey and I probably need some time to chill out and see what has happened. The first round of voting failed to determine an outright winner, though Infantino led with 88, three more than pre-vote favourite Sheikh Salman. A simple majority of more than 50% 104 of 207 available votes - was sufficient for victory in round two. Not since 1974, when Joao Havelange of Brazil beat 13-year incumbent Stanley Rous of England, has a second round been needed. http://www.bbc.com/

R.G.S Golf Society

Our fun day game this week took us to Bonalba where the course and especially the greens were great. With a chilly start it did not seem much like a fun day, but it was dry and it soon warmed up, as did the competition with the teams for this four ball Texas Scramble all keen to come out on top. No matter what handicaps the players play off the scores in Texas Scrambles always come out close, and this fixture was no exception with only 3.6 separating the final scores. Individually nearest the pins on the par three’s were Cameron Stewart (2) and Nigel Wright, no one achieved nearest

the pin in two despite hole 3 being very short. The two’s pot was won by Roy Stanley and Theresa Wright who shared it with their team, the victorious team was Colin Fear, Dave Shelton, Nigel Wright and Jim McCarthy who nearly came off worse for wear when a huge Moscovie duck attacked him on the 18th tee. Back at Rayz bar on El Raso a great buffet was served up by our hostess, and the presentation took place. Our next game is at Alicante on the 4th of March, anyone wishing to join us for this or any other fixture please contact us at rubysgolf@yahoo.co.uk

Spring like conditions met the players, and the course was again in good condition, with excellent greens, although beginning to show in places the effects of lack of rain this winter, particularly in areas of frequent buggy traffic. One score stood out from those eventually posted, that of in-form Ivan Hanak with a superb 38 points, well ahead of the rest of the field, the next best score being that of Norman Cahill with 35 points. Just what could have been if Ivan could putt!!!!
