Spain’s Supreme Court backs renewable energy cuts
Decision finds that €1.7 billion drop in subsidies was legal, but government still faces dozens of claims in arbitration agencies The Spanish Supreme Court has dealt a new blow to renewable energy producers. In a ruling, the court backed the 2014 government decree that resulted in cuts of nearly €1.7 billion in subsidies for the sector. The decision is a setback for the three producers who fought the legal battle against the Spanish government The court finds that the decree,
passed by Mariano Rajoy of the Popular Party (PP), does not violate the Spanish Constitution or EU legislation, as the plaintiffs claimed. The decision, which confirms an earlier ruling by the Constitutional Court, is a setback for the three producers who fought the legal battle against the Spanish government: Ingeniería Civil, Alternativa y Medioambiental (Incam), Renovables Samca and Llerena Solar, Temcli y Powersol
June 2016
2007. But hundreds more similar appeals have reached the Supreme Court, which is expected to rule along the same lines in the coming months. The one piece of good news for producers is that the new premiums are not retroactive, so that past subsidies do not have to be returned. Waiting for ICSID Despite the favourable rulings for the Spanish government, the legal battle over the cuts to renewable
subsidies is not over. Dozens of companies and investment funds have turned to the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), a World Bank-sponsored arbitration agency, with claims against Spain. Those decisions are still pending. But in January, another claim at the Arbitration Court of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce ended in Spain’s favour. elpais
Melody Makers International at La Zenia
Necessary cuts?
The Costa's leading popular choral group, Melody Makers International, will be presenting the latest in their increasingly successful series of shows on Saturday 25th June in the exotic surroundings of the Orihuela Costa Resort Hotel at La Zenia. The two shows, at 2pm and 8pm, are entitled 'A Century of Popular Songs' and will include smash hit songs. Starting with a fabulous medley of 1920s favourites, the show moves through the decades and will include a Wartime selection (1940s), the fabulous music of the 60s and 70s (Bowie, Beatles, Beach Boys etc.) and, of course, Abba. The second half of the concert will concentrate on the remaining decades of the century, bringing us up to the present day with the music of Beyonce, Adele, Barbra Streisand and Celine Dion. There is something for everyone in this packed variety show, including the eagerly-awaited comedy duets for which these shows are renowned,
all accompanied by a professional band from the UK and conducted by local maestro Nigel Hopkins. For the second time this year Melody Makers are supporting the children's charity Debra - the Butterfly Children, for children with the horrible condition EB which leaves them horribly scarred, or even worse, which can result from the merest touch of their skin. The Melody Makers concert in January raised €3,000 for the charity, and choir director Nigel Hopkins is keen to match that magnificent figure with this concert. Tickets for the shows - priced again at €10 (afternoon) and 12€ (evening) are available from La Ponderosa Gift Shop at La Zenia, as well as The CardPlace at both Punta Prima and Benimar. Tickets can also be obtained from the Debra charity shops in Quesada and San Fulgencio.

E.P. The legislative changes to conditions for investment in renewable energies were rushed through parliament by royal decree, as Spain sought to contain its ballooning deficit in the middle of the economic crisis. Calculations indicate that Spain was paying excessive premiums and subsidies to thermosolar and photovoltaic producers, and that such premiums, in excess of market rates, were one of the causes of the unrelenting rise in the tariff deficit – the difference between the cost of producing electricity and what Spanish consumers are actually charged for it. Spain has the fourth-highest electricity costs in Europe – around €80 per person a month.

Mojácar bans 'unseemly' stag and hen party behaviour
A POPULAR tourism hotspot in the province of Almería has banned 'vulgar' stag and hen parties, saying it is 'fed up' with seeing revellers lowering the tone – especially in the daytime when children may be around. Mojácar town council plans to fine anyone seen wearing 'phallic tiaras' or indulging in 'unseemly behaviour with blow-up dolls', or anything similar to these actions which are frequently witnessed by local residents and other, more peaceful holidaymakers. Whilst the local government does not want to ban hen and stag parties altogether, realising it would be financial suicide as Mojácar relies so heavily on tourism, it wants to clamp down on those visitors who do not know how to behave in a civil fashion in public. Walking around in swimming trunks or bikinis – except on the beach or the immediate seafront – or men going topless other than on the beach will be subject to fines, too, although the stag and hen party behaviour is what has most upset the

Few people are feeling the benefits of the macroeconomic recovery on their household finances Spain’s macroeconomic data is improving and unemployment is falling, but 92% of Spaniards say inequality is rife, while 72% believe the gap between rich and poor will persist for a long time to come. A new survey measuring confidence in the economy conducted by pollster Metroscopia shows that most Spaniards are not seeing any direct or meaningful impact of the economic recovery on their household finances. Inequality has increased considerably since the crisis began in 2008. At the same time, the number of multimillionaires has doubled: nearly 500 taxpayers are declaring income of more than €30 million, compared with 230 in 2007. Meanwhile, more than 13 million people, mostly minors, are at risk of poverty or social exclusion because of low household income, according to the latest Living Conditions Survey by the National Statistics Institute (INE). 60% of Spaniards feel that the country’s overall recovery has little or nothing to do with the government’s policies Against such a backdrop, pessimism is growing: 72% of Spaniards feel that Spain will emerge from the crisis poorer and with greater social inequality than before as a result of the harsh austerity measures adopted by consecutive governments to contain
euro
public spending. Although economic output grew by 3.2% in 2015 and unemployment began to fall in 2014, the cake is being shared out unevenly. Stagnant prices and a deflationary period (the Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices was -1.1% in 2014 and -0.19% in 2015) are not preventing 80% of Spaniards from feeling that the cost of living keeps rising. That is because households’ purchasing power has been shrinking year-on-year since the crisis began. The latest INE figures put average annual net household income at €26,092, the lowest since 2008, meaning that the macroeconomic improvement is not being passed on to domestic economies. Instead, the rich are getting richer, the poor are getting poorer, and some people who were not poor now are. What’s more, 60% of Spaniards feel that the country’s overall recovery has little or nothing to do with the government’s policies, given that this upward trend is also visible in other countries that applied completely different economic policies to Spain’s. The prevailing opinion in Spanish society (70%) is that the state should step in to compensate for the extreme difference between the highest and lowest earners, and that it is the state’s role to protect and aid the neediest members of society. elpais

council.“We don't want that kind of obscene conduct in Mojácar,” PP mayoress Rosa María Cano says. Such revelry often starts as early as midday and goes on until the early hours, meaning the likelihood of families seeing groups with plastic penis accessories is high. In general and even at night, fines for offenders will range from €100 to €300, but if partygoers are seen acting in this manner in the daytime, near large crowds or where children are around, or near listed buildings and tourist attractions, they could be hit in their pockets by as much as €1,000 each. Opposition members slammed the new rules, saying they were guaranteed to 'destroy tourism'. A visitor fined for walking the streets in swimming trunks or a bikini would 'find it so absurd' that he or she would tell everyone about it. “The story would get around quickly, and tourists planning a visit to Mojácar would choose another destination,” complains socialist (PSOE) leader Manuel Zamora. thinkspain.com

Holy Communion season without the 'holy' part: Costa del Sol kids celebrate lay 'confirmation'
HOLY Communion season is well under way, with most children's ceremonies taking place in May and mid-June – although in at least one town in Spain, they will be a nonreligious affair. Confirmation ceremonies in Spain follow a year's worth of catechism, or Sunday school, and are better known as a huge party for family and friends where the child dresses up in a pricey gown resembling a wedding dress, for girls, or a sailor's uniform, for boys, and receive heaps of presents. The pomp and circumstance
ort
legitimately calls the entire meaning of being confirmed into the Catholic Church into question – at around the age of eight to 10, children all over the country start looking forward to their party, presents and pretty dresses, normally taking place in a hired restaurant hall with up to 200 guests, most of whom will be bringing gifts. For children brought up in an atheist household, especially if – given the choice – they would rather not go to Sunday school and pass tests to show they have understood the material, the whole First Communion experience is
June 2016
a rite of passage they miss out on. But not this year, and not in La Rincón de la Victoria (Málaga province) – at the instigation of one mum, who admitted her eight-year-old daughter was 'only interested in the party and presents', the council has agreed to host 'civil Communions'. When the move was first agreed in October – by all parties except the right-wing PP – it provoked reactions ranging from outrage to hilarity, given that the whole point of a confirmation is, in fact, the religious element. But mayoress Encarnación Anaya and her coalition partner and treasury councillor Antonio Moreno, of the Podemos faction Ahora Rincón, say a 'civil Communion' is not the same as a 'wedding without the marriage'. “It's a celebration of the passage from childhood to adolescence,” explains Moreno, “and we don't see why this necessarily has to include the religious side if it is not what the child and parents want.” He pointed out that as well as civil weddings, civil silver and golden wedding anniversaries and even civil 'christening ceremonies' are commonplace these days. In fact, civil 'christenings' have been taking place for the past eight years since the village of El Borge, which
has just 963 residents and is also on the Costa del Sol, first announced them – and since then, they have spread to other parts of Spain such as Rivas Vaciamadrid (Madrid), and several towns in Catalunya. Essentially, he says, these are purely a 'baby-naming ceremony' and do not have to commit the parents to raise the child as a Catholic. Weddings in the Rincón de la Victoria cost €120, and other celebrations such as christenings cost €45, and include Communions. The €45 is the booking fee and a further €22 is added for the actual celebration, but residents only have to pay the €22 since Communions are arranged en masse for children within the typical age range. Kids go through their confirmation rites in their parish church one by one in their Sunday school group, then each goes on to celebrate the party and open his or her presents at a restaurant, usually on the same day and sometimes as a joint effort between families of several children if they all want to be at the same party. Dolores Díaz, who – along with her daughter, now nine, started the whole 'civil Communion' idea, has since been joined by three other families whose children want to follow suit. The Rincón de la Victoria started its confirmation ceremonies in April and will continue them through until midJune, but the council was not prepared to disclose the dates of the three 'civil' versions, nor where they would take place, in order to protect the families' privacy. However, Moreno says non-religious 'Communions', or childhood-toadolescence parties, would be able to take place anywhere in the town that was authorised to host wedding ceremonies, and would be officiated by a town councillor in the same way as marriages and baby-naming rites are. thinkspain

CHARACTERISTICS OF SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS WOMEN
SELF BELIEF Read the written journals or listen to the speeches of these successful business women and you will observe that they had a firm belief that they were destined to be great. They believed in themselves; what others said about them didn’t matter. They never looked for problem solvers; they believed they were the problem solvers and that belief worked for them. FAITH Faith is moving ahead, even in the face of uncertainty. Did these successful business women have faith? My answer is yes. No one can build a successful business without faith because business is a game where you thrive on uncertainty. When starting a business; success is never guaranteed, compared to climbing the corporate ladder. If you lack faith, you won’t have the drive to press on even when there’s no sign of progress. PASSION If there’s one thing that propels successful business women forward; it is passion. Successful women entrepreneurs are passionate about what they do
and that’s why they built a business around what they love to do best. HUMBLE Entrepreneurship is a life-long process and successful business women know this. Things change so fast in the business world; you could be an innovation today and become obsolete tomorrow. To stay on course and adapt swiftly to the ever changing trend, successful women entrepreneurs keep studying and learning. They read industrial journals, books and magazines. They attend seminars and update themselves regularly with the latest industrial trend. Successful female entrepreneurs know that their cup is never full; they know that they don’t have the right answers to all questions. So they humble themselves and learn when availed the opportunity. HANDLE CRITICISM Show me a business woman who hasn’t been criticized and I will show you an average woman. Successful women entrepreneurs were able to achieve success because they refused to be bugged down by negative comments. From Oprah Winfrey and Rachael Ray to Martha Stewart; they have all been criticized heavily. If you are an individual that listens to other people’s opinion before taking action; then your success will be limited.

The Ultimate Summer Home Maintenance Checklist Everything you need to do to keep your home and yard in tip-top shape this summer. With the change of each season comes a new set of maintenance tasks for your home. Now that summer’s here, you’ll want to prepare your home and yard for the onslaught of summer heat. From air-conditioner upkeep to hanging a clothesline, these simple chores will help keep your home happy and healthy. Check detectors. Check your home’s smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they’re working properly. Inspect air-conditioners. If you haven’t already, prep air conditioners and fans for their busiest season: •W ith the help of your spouse, install window airconditioning units. Remove and clean the filters before firing up the AC. If you have central airconditioning, consider a professional servicing.
•C lean all ceiling fans and other fans with a damp rag. If you have high ceilings, a ceiling-fan duster can help you de-grime hard-to-reach blades. Enjoy a dry spell. Install an outdoor clothesline to dry your laundry in the summer sun; you’ll save money and energy by skipping the dryer. Plus, who doesn’t love the smell of air-dried sheets? Clean your outdoor cooker. Give your grill a deep cleaning with these simple steps: •F or gas grills, turn the heat up to high and let the grill cook with the lid closed for about half an hour. Allow the grill to cool and then brush it off with a grill brush. Wipe down the exterior with a damp sponge and a gentle cleanser. Clean the grill’s drip pans. •F or charcoal grills, completely empty the grill and wipe out any ashy residue. Then clean it inside and out with hot water, a scrubby sponge and some liquid dishwashing soap. Let the grill dry completely before using it again.

Polish your porch. Thoroughly sweep painted porch floors; then mop them with an all-purpose cleaner. If there’s a lot of built-up dirt on the floorboards, you may need to scrub them with a brush. Analyse your deck. Look over your deck for signs of rotting and hammer in any nails that are poking up. Then, determine if your deck needs sealing. Sprinkle water on the deck’s boards. If the

water beads up, you’re in good shape; but if it soaks right in, it’s time to reseal that sucker. Wash your windows. If you didn’t tackle exterior window washing in the spring, now’s the time to get your glass clean. Make much ado about mulch. Add a layer of mulch to keep weeds down and help the ground retain its moisture in the heat. It’ll give your plants a chance to grow. Be a leak detective. Check your hoses and exterior faucets for leaks -- even a tiny drip can add up to a big waste of water. Pinhole leaks in hoses can be covered up by winding regular electrical tape around the (dry) hose in overlapping layers. Primp your plants. Deadhead both perennials and annuals to keep them productive. If you have visible dead foliage from spring bulbs, pull it out to maintain a tidy look, but if the daffodil or tulip leaves are still green, leave them alone; they’re busy nourishing the bulb to bloom again next year. Plan your watering schedule. Train your garden to endure dry days by watering deeply a couple times a week, instead of watering lightly daily. This style of watering will promote the growth of deep, strong roots. Stop dirt at the door. Keep summer’s mud and muck outside with not one, but two doormats at your main entry door. Place a coarse mat at the exterior and a softer, cloth one on the interior to catch the most dirt. Better still, instruct family members to remove their shoes upon entering. If you live near a beach, a tub of water for sandy feet placed by the door works wonders for keeping sand outside where it belongs. https://www.thenest.com

9 Essential Pieces for
Luxurious Outdoor Living Contact 950 121 936 or email sales@soltimes.com
Bring It Outside Warm weather and long days call for lazy hours lounging outdoors. Happily, a few additions will transform a basic patio or porch into a true extension of your home,
Roll out a rug Outdoor mats, which now come in tons of great colors and cool patterns, are a quick way to add comfort underfoot, define your space, and tie the look of it together. UV-treated materials and can be hosed down for fast cleaning.
Invest in sturdy (and stylish) furniture
Well-made pieces will withstand the elements over many seasons. Choose comfortable, versatile items like this bench, made of renewable eucalyptus wood. It looks sharp solo—or use it with its table for added seating come mealtime.
Throw shade
When the sun starts blazing, a classic umbrella offers an elegant solution. Or consider a movable scrim (imagine curtains around a seating area) that you can shift as the sun travels through the day, suggests Christiane Lemieux, founder of new home-furnishing brand Lemieux Et Cie.
Add a focal point
Place a large fire pit at the patio’s center, suggests Sarah Fishburne, director of home design at Home Depot—or a smaller one off to the side, to create an area of interest. (Either should be at least 10 feet from the house.) It’s a feature that extends the season, and those with grates on top can double as small grills.
Light the way
Candles and lanterns provide safe passage in dark areas and bring a flattering glow to your guests. Plus, “light beautifully defines a party’s perimeter,” says Lemieux.
Enlist hardworking pieces
Is it a stool? Is it a table? Flexible furniture means you always have whatever you need on hand. Go
for weatherproof (and deceptively lightweight) materials like teak or resin for enduring quality.
Infuse beauty—and fragrance “Coordinate your planters and flowers to complement the colors of your patio for an effortless, pulled-together look,” Fishburne says. Choose evening bloomers like moonflower for a gently scented cocktail hour.
Cozy up the place Soft furnishings, including pillows, curtains, and throws, establish an outside vibe that’s just as comfortable as the inside. “I create a lounge feeling by layering rugs, poufs, and large pillows around the fire pit for sunset cocktails,” says Lemieux.
Keep drinks at hand A rolling cooler is a practical way to keep chilled drinks at the ready—plus, it’s fun and stylish. “There is something about galvanized steel, ice, and drinks that just says, ‘We are going to have a good time,’” says Lemieux. http://www.marthastewart.com

Outdoor parties are the best. As the host, you want to get everything just right -- from and guidelines around open flames. When you host your next outdoor event, consider setting a beautiful table to decorating the landscape. One thing that isn't always at the the following: forefront of one's mind while entertaining -- but should be -- is fire safety. Use these three easy tips to ensure the safety of your guests and yourself, so everyone can focus • Use candle holders that are sturdy and won’t tip over easily. on having fun -- including you! • Have an adult present at all times when a portable fireplace is burning. • Keep children and pets as well as anything that can burn at least three feet away from open flames. 3. Opt for faux flames: Take fire safety to the next level by using batteryoperated flameless candles and solar-powered patio (tiki) torches in place of an open flame to create a safe and beautiful glow. Flameless candles come in all colors, shapes, and sizes -- and many are nicely scented. They even look and feel like the real ones. Sky lanterns, while often used to celebrate, are actually prohibited by NFPA code requirements. Use kites, streamers, or even flags -- they're all great and safe alternatives. Make sure you brush up on fire safety tips and valuable resources before your next outdoor event. marthastewart

Use caution whenever open flames are involved: The most popular ways to create the perfect ambience are with patio (tiki) torches, portable outdoor fireplaces, candles, and sky lanterns -- all of which use a flame as their light source. While they're beautiful, these outdoor decorations can pose an increased risk of spreading fire. When it comes to outdoor lighting, the majority of fire-related injuries and home damage occur because: • Candles or patio (tiki) torches fall or are knocked over • The flame is too close Repair & Install to something that could Good, Fast, Low Cost burn • A flaming sky lantern Based in Quesda Home Improvements lands on a rooftop, in C/ Los Arcos 17, Local 5, the yard, or on trees, Ciudad Quesada and is ignited before the flame was fully losarcos17@mail.com extinguished www.tyco-torrevieja.com 2. The other day I came across the following passage in the Bible: “Gossip is spread by wicked people who stir up trouble and break up friendships” and couldn’t but reflect on how true that is even today, 3000 years or more since it was first written. How often our children have been hurt by stories spread by jealous ‘friends’, and how many friendships have been destroyed as a result. But we adults aren’t immune to the hurt gossip can cause. We have, I’m sure, all of us come across folk who delight in gossip, and witnessed the immense damage they wreak on others. It’s so easy to spread a rumour which may contain little, if any truth, and so hard to ignore the mischievous report, allegedly passed on in friendship, of another’s negative comments or actions. How quickly even the best relationships can be undermined or destroyed as a result of listening to and believing such stories. For gossip is, as the Bible asserts, only and always spread by wicked people, whose intent is to cause trouble. So how can we counteract this scourge in our society? Well again I’d suggest the Bible has the answer, as St Paul, in his letter to Christians living in Philippi wrote: “In conclusion then,
(11,425 H 27500) has been moved to the UK beam of Astra 2 E and has a much weaker signal meaning some people have struggled to tune in there new Freesat boxes again this is only a problem in this area at this time of year A number of set-top boxes and smart TVs will not be able to use iPlayer from September this year, as the BBC has decided to end support for an early (MHEG) version of its player. V2 has low bit rates compared to newer iPlayer versions, resulting in blocky picture quality in scenes with rapid movement. Affected will be Freesat devices without the Freetime label,
fill your minds with those things that are good and that deserve praise: things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and honourable.” ‘If only’, St Paul suggests, ‘we were to concentrate on these positive ideals, then gossip and its consequent hurt would be a thing of the past’. We’d see the child (or adult) reporting that “so-and-so hates you” as, perhaps through jealousy, the trouble-maker they are, and try to help them attain a more positive outlook rather than allow ourselves to be infected by their attitude. So let’s beat the gossips of this World and, discounting all unsubstantiated rumour, concentrate our minds on things that are good, true, noble, right, pure, lovely, honourable and praiseworthy and I’m sure we’ll all, as a result, feel a lot better. Sony 2010 (KDL-EX range) TVs and some older Freeview devices. If the iPlayer home screen on your device looks like the image above, your device will stop working. Unfortunately for UK expats, the very popular Foxsat Humax HD and HDR (right) are included. These Freesat devices were sold extensively in mainland Europe owing to their highly sensitive tuners. A few people have managed to get them working out of the UK with the aid of a VPN router, which prevents geo-blocking. The Foxsat will continue to work as a satellite receiver, but as far as iPlayer is concerned, it will be bricked.

Brexit campaign resonates with Catalan separatists While regional president Carles Puigdemont is pro-European, he knows that the
turmoil caused by Brexit would boost his independence campaign. There is something familiar about Britain’s Brexit campaign, to Catalan separatists such as new regional president, Carles Puigdemont. At play are many of the sentiments that drive this wealthy Spanish region’s independence movement: sovereignty, identity, a sense that scroungers elsewhere are spending your money and dislike of a far-off, unfamiliar metropolis. Replace the word “Brussels” with “Madrid” and some of the literature could be recycled. Puigdemont, like the vast majority of Spaniards, is a fervent pro-European. But he sympathises with those who seek to bolster their sovereignty by demanding a referendum. And he knows that the turmoil caused by Brexit would also boost his independence campaign by obliging the EU to accept a major reconfiguration of member states. That explains why, uniquely among Spanish politicians, he is critical of the remain campaign. “We have also suffered campaigns of fear,” says Puigdemont, a 53-year-old former mayor of Girona who was catapulted into the Catalan presidency five months ago. “I remember when the banks started issuing their opinions. They treated us as if we were not grown-ups and said a whole lot of lies.” Those who predict that Brexit will destroy the European Union are wrong, he insists. “The EU will make an extraordinary display of political realism, and an admirable, Darwinian ability to adapt,” he says, implying that it would also adapt to Catalan independence. “It will be very interesting.” Catalan independence is as unpopular among European Union leaders as Brexit. Yet at the last regional elections in September, a majority of the deputies sent to the Catalan parliament were separatists. Puigdemont now leads a government which he
Basque Country Moves Closer to Independence Referendum
Spain’s autonomous Basque Country made a step closer to an independence referendum on Sunday after tens of thousands backed secession in a regional poll, organizers said. The vote was initiated by Gure Esku Dago (It’s in our hands) group, the organizers told RIA Novosti. Around 37,000 voted in the poll that was conducted in 34 municipalities. The region’s total population is over 2 million. The group’s leaders, Angel Oiarbide and Zelai Nikolás, praised the vote as “historic,” saying it was “the first step to a referendum.” “We are on the way toward a referendum. And we will continue working in this direction. Today is a historic day,” the organization said in a statement. The Basque Country has followed in the footsteps of Catalonia, a well-off Spanish region which has held dozens of local votes on whether it should leave Spain in the past years. Madrid has called all of them unconstitutional. http://sputniknews.com/
June 2016
claims is already 70% of the way along the path to independence. That may be wishful thinking. Just as Europe considers Brexit a nightmare, so Spain sees Catalan independence as a calamity. Acting prime minister, Mariano Rajoy, of the conservative People’s party, is determined to stop that happening and has blocked a referendum. This means, for the moment, that Puigdemont is driving Catalonia towards a nasty showdown with Madrid. Puigdemont believes that the rising tide of separatism will win the day. “In 2012 there were just 14 deputies elected on a separatist ticket in the Catalan parliament,” he pointed out in an interview during a break between debating and voting at the 135-seat parliament in Barcelona. “Now we are a majority.” Puigdemont’s government has embarked on a plan that aims to break with Spain – but, somehow, remain in the European Union – within just a few years. He does not believe warnings that Catalonia would be instantly expelled from the EU and refused to say whether he would choose independence over Europe. Like most Catalans, he finds that an impossible choice. His task is to guide the regional parliament, governed by an unstable coalition that includes his own Convergence party and a small group of radical anti-capitalists, for an 18-month “pre-independence” period while it passes so-called “disconnection” laws to prepare for life outside Spain. Fresh regional elections would then be called next year to choose a government charged with drawing up a constitution for an independent Catalonia. If that was approved at a local referendum, then Catalonia would deem itself independent – regardless of what the rest of Spain has to say. And Puigdemont might end up in jail. Spain’s constitution gives Catalonia no right to self-proclaimed independence. The constitutional court’s powers were recently beefed up so that it could act against separatists. Friends and colleagues insist that Puigdemont – who still lives in Girona with his two daughters and Romanian wife – would go to jail if necessary. He refused to confirm that to the Guardian, saying only that he had pledged – using a Catalan and Spanish expression for working hard or doing whatever it takes – to “give up his skin” for the cause. “This is a deeply serious business, and profoundly democratic,” he says. “I could not disobey the will of the Catalan parliament.” Puigdemont’s absolute belief in independence makes him one of the more hardcore members of a mostly conservative Convergence party which only embraced the separatist cause four years ago. Unlike former president Artur Mas, he has always been a separatist. That helps explain why, when the anti- capitalists vetoed Mas, Puigdemont was suddenly elevated from mayor to president in January. He claims that independence can happen without breaking the law, though this is largely because he has already decided that Spain’s constitutional court must be ignored. The combined will of Catalan voters and the parliament weighs more heavily on him, he claims, than the “whims of a disacredited court”. “What is more important?,” he asks. “What the members of a politicised tribunal say, or what the citizens vote for? For me it is clear.” There are timid signs that, after half a dozen years of effervescence and with the anti-austerity Podemos party offering Catalan voters a different kind of hope, the separatist balloon may start to deflate. The one thing certain to change that would be for Puigdemont to be sent to jail. Indignant Catalans would never forget. theguardian.com
EU referendum: Brexit campaign accused of ‘fanning flames of division’ with controversial map
'Coded nudges and winks like this are utterly horrific and they should stop fanning the flames of division. Vote Leave is just playing the politics of division. It has no place in British society' The official Brexit campaign group has been accused of “fanning the flames of division” after publishing a map highlighting how the EU will a share a border with Syria if Turkey gains membership. In their referendum campaign material, set to be sent to millions of people across the UK , Vote Leave claim that five countries – Albania, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Turkey – are "set to join the EU”. Only three territories are actually named on the map: the UK, Syria and Iraq. David Cameron has previously criticised the Vote Leave campaign for claiming that Turkey is set to join the 28 member-state bloc. Speaking in May the Prime Minister said the country would not be ready to join the bloc “until the year 3000” on its current rate of progress. “This is just the visual interpretation of a dog whistle,” Tim Farron, the leader of the Liberal Democrats, told The Independent. He added: “Coded nudges and winks like this are utterly horrific and they should stop fanning the flames of division. Vote Leave is just playing the politics of division. It has no place in British society.” The leaflet, first published by the Spectator, highlights “the facts” of the EU, adding: “The EU is expanding to include: Albania, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Turkey. When we joined, there were just nine member states. Now there are 28, the most recent being
Romania, Bulgaria and Croatia. Five more countries are in the queue to join, including Turkey, totalling 89 million people. When they join, they will have the same rights as other member states”. It also carries the widely disputed claim that the EU “costs us £350 million a week”, which is “enough to build a new NHS hospital every week.” Despite warnings from the UK Statistics Authority, who criticised the figure as inaccurate, both Michael Gove and Boris Johnson have continued to publicise the figure relentlessly. “We get less than half of this back, and have no say over its spent,” the leaflet adds. It comes as the pound fell sharply against the dollar on Monday as financial markets reacted badly to new polls suggesting momentum is moving towards Britain’s exit from the European Union. On Sunday Nigel Farage was criticised by a fellow Brexit campaigner of “outrageous blatant
scaremongering” after suggesting women could be at risk of sex attacks from migrants if Britons vote to stay in the EU. Referring to reports from the New Years Eve attacks in Cologne in Germany that hundreds of women were sexually assaulted, the Ukip leader said the possibility of such attacks in the UK will be "the nuclear bomb" of the referendum campaign. independent.co.uk

LOOKING TO BUY OR RENT? FIND YOUR DREAM LOCATION INSIDE! Rental Housing Prices Rose by 0.8% in April
The average price of rental housing in Spain increased by 0.8% in April, according to the latest data from property portal fotocasa, and stood at 7.29 euros/m2 per month. This monthly increase in the price of rental housing continues the trend that prevailed during 2015, when rental prices started to rise following eight years of widespread declines. In April, some 14 of Spain’s regions registered month-on-month increases in rental prices, and year-on-year all regions registered increases. In fact, the year-on-year increase in April, of 4.5%, is one of the most significant rises in recent months. According to the portal, the rental market in Spain is experiencing strong growth, both in supply and demand, causing the prices to rise throughout much of the country, which they say is due to various reasons such as the strong demand, the impossibility of buying a home for a great part of the population and the high returns offered by rental housing. Moreover, the Spanish are also showing increasing interest in favour of renting a home over buying. Since rental prices
reached their maximum levels in May 2007 (10.12 euros/m2 per month) the price of rental housing has accumulated an average decline of -27.9%. In fact six regions have registered declines in excess of -30% since their maximum levels. The region of AragĂłn has registered the greatest drop in rental prices (-40.1%), followed by Castilla-La Mancha (-35.5%), Cantabria (-35.2%) and Valencia (-31.4%). Some 14 regions recorded increases in rental prices in the month of April, ranging from 4.3% in the Balearic Islands to 0.1% in Cantabria. In contrast, rental prices fell in three regions in April: by -0.1% in Navarre and by -0.3% in Aragon and the Basque Country. In the ranking of prices, Catalonia took first place over the Basque Country as the most expensive region in which to rent, with prices of 10.22 euros/ m2 per month and 10.15 euros/m2 per month, respectively, followed by Madrid (10.13 euros/m2
per month), while in contrast, the regions with the most affordable rental housing are Extremadura (4.50 euros/m2 per month) and Castilla-La Mancha (4.67 euros/m2 per month). kyero.com

Tips for Applying Paste Wax
Put a spoonful of wax, about the size of a golf ball, in a square of 100-percent-cotton fabric. Wrap the fabric around the wax ball and knead it until soft. Rub in a circular motion, one small area at a time, until the waxing is complete. When the surface dulls, wipe off the excess wax. Use a clean, soft cotton cloth and turn it frequently. Repeat waxing and wiping until the entire piece is waxed. If you notice a streak, keep wiping to remove excess wax. Polish the wood, with a soft cloth or lamb's-wool pad attached to an electric drill or doors power buffer. Work with the grain and follow product directions carefully. 2. Restore as needed, especially from sun fading, using a commercial finish restoring product such as Howard Restor-A-Finish. Choose a shade closest to the wood stain and apply with #0000 steel wool to a small section at a time. Work with the grain of the wood and use light to moderate pressure. Immediately wipe with a soft, lint-free cloth, such as cheesecloth. 3. Feed as a monthly routine using an orange oil or wax (try FeedN-Wax beeswax) to prevent drying and cracking. Only 45min. from the glitzy tourist hub of Marbella, the small white village of Casares is the perfect place to experience Andalucia's more authentic charms without the crowds. Locally, Casares is known for its steep winding, friendly people, and unpretentious, home-style cooking, but visitors should also make time to hike the surrounding Bermeja Mountains and head up to the 12th century castle which offers stunning views of the Strait of Gibraltar.
7.) Cudillero
While Spain's islands and southern coast routinely draw the most visitors, we shouldn't forget about northern Spain's small mountain kingdom of Asturias and the most beautiful of its fishing villages, Cudillero. Wedged between the mountains and the sea, Cudillero and its colourful homes make a wonderful stop for visitors looking the explore the village's cobblestone streets, sample some of the legendary seafood hauled in daily, and relax with a cool glass of local cider in the lively marina area.
8.) Puerto Andratx
For those looking for a quiet, romantic alternative to the mass-tourism which plagues much of Mallorca, the small port town of Puerto Andratx in western Mallorca couldn't be a better option. A summer favourite among locals and Mediterranean jetsetters for years, Puerto Andratx offers quaint cottages for rent, world-class local seafood at the glamorous seaside promenade, and a gorgeous environment for nighttime strolls with a significant other. Straddling a massive gorge, the stunning village of Ronda has famous both locally and internationally for its Goyesca bullfights and unbeatable scenery. Long regarded as one of Spain's most beautiful villages, Ronda recalls a regal era of knights and bandits complete with Moorish baths, archaeological museums, and centuries-old wineries. A good plan is to spend the morning exploring the squares, shopping on Espinel St., and then heading over to one of the terraces overlooking the impressive bridge and chasm for some tapas and a glass of local wine.

House Prices Rose by 2.4% in the First Quarter of 2016
According to data published by the Ministry of Public Works last week, the average price of housing in Spain stood at 1,492.4 euros per square metre in the first quarter of 2016, which represents a quarter-on-quarter rise of 0.2% and a year-on-year increase of 2.4%. In real terms, discounting inflation, the average price of homes in Spain experienced year-on-year growth for the sixth consecutive quarter, reaching an annual increase of 3.1%. The Ministry explained that, according to their statistical records, with this increase, the price adjustment since the maximum values registered in the first quarter of 2008 is 29%. In contrast, since their minimum values registered in the third quarter of 2014, the price of housing has now recovered by 2.5%. In real terms (including the consumer price index variation) the current price reflects a decline since the peak levels, of 34.3%. By property type, the average price per square metre of housing of up to five years old stood at 1,727.8 euros in the first quarter of the year, representing a yearon-year increase of 0.2%, while the price for homes over five years old stood at 1,486.4 euros per square metre, which represents a
rise of 2.6% year-on-year.A total of 12 of Spain’s regions recorded year-on-year price increases in the first three months of the year, especially the Balearic Islands, which recorded the greatest increase, of +9.6%, followed by: Catalonia (+4.9%); Madrid (+4.2%); Extremadura (+3.7%); Galicia (+2.6%); Valencia (+2.4%) and the Canary Islands (+2.4%). In contrast, five regions recorded year-on-year declines. These were: La Rioja (-2.2%); the Basque Country (-1.9%); Cantabria (-1.3%); Aragón (-0.1%) and the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla (-0.3%). In the cities and towns with over 25,000 inhabitants, those with the highest housing prices were: San Sebastian, with an average price of 2,993.9 euros per square metre; Ibiza (2,620.4 euros/m2); Sant Cugat del Vallès (2,610.2 euros/m2); Barcelona (2,594.5 euros/m2); Madrid (2,533.6 euros/ m2) and Getxo (2,507.9 euros/ m2), whilst the lowest prices were recorded in: Elda (508.9 euros/m2); Ontinyent (547.5 euros/m2); Jumilla (560 euros/ m2); Villarrobledo (567.6 euros/ m2); Vilena (598.3 euros/m2) and Tomelloso (621.5 euros/m2). kyero.com
Building Licences for New Homes Climbed by 57% in Q1 In the first three months of this year the number of licences authorised for the construction of new homes in Spain reached a total of 16,782, which represents an increase of 57.1% compared to the same period of 2015, when only 10,682 permits were granted. According to data from the Ministry of Public Works, this is the best figure recorded since the first quarter of 2011, when the number of building permits reached a total of 21,953. Of the total number of building permits requested between January and March, some 74% related to the construction of new apartments in blocks, with a total of 12,425 units and an increase of 64.7% over the same period of last year, while there were 4,356 permit applications for single family homes, which is 39.2% more than the previous year. Thus, the latest data shows that the first quarter of the year confirms the path of recovery in housing construction, following the 42.5% increase in building permits in 2015, which came after 2014 broke a run of seven consecutive years of negative results by registering growth of 1.7%, to reach a total of 34,873 permits issued. This real estate market indicator recorded an all time low in 2013 for the total number of building licences authorised (34,288 units in the year), and since the peak level reached in 2006, when a total of 865,561 permits were issued (126,753 in the month of September alone), this represents a decline of 96%.
El País reported that the areas where there are a growing number of building licence applications are the regions which have lower stocks of unsold housing. In Madrid, developers applied for 4,962 licences, which is 56% more than in the first quarter of 2015, while in Catalonia, there were 2,192 licences issued (+49.4%), in Andalucía there were 2,198 (+35.4%), and in Valencia the number of building permits increased by 21%, to a total of 1,590 authorisations. The data also shows that the size of these new homes has grown, with the average size of a family home standing at around 203.6 square metres, while the average apartment size stood at 118 square metres (114 metres in the same quarter of 2015). The Ministry pointed out that licences for the reform and restoration of homes in Spain, which up until 2015 had accumulated four consecutive years of declines, registered a total of 5,976 licence authorisations up until March, representing an increase of 0.5% compared to the same period of the previous year, when 5,943 permits were issued. However, the number of licences for home extensions declined by 2.7% year-on-year, to just 348 permits issued. kyero.com

Residencia who attended an emergency within seven
Alqueria has decided to open its doors to immigration. The rationale behind this brainwave is as follows. The Alquerian people are dysfunctional with the result that the two barrios which make up the Pueblo are in a constant state of open warfare. Each blames the other for any misfortune, an unexpected rainfall can bring on the energetic oiling of rifles. If foreign blood is brought into Alqueria it would dilute the original population with a proportional dilution of hostility. What could go wrong? Of course the right sort of people would be needed, so some sort of vetting procedure would be required. The immigration requirements of various countries were studied but as Alqueria is a singular country to say the least none of the procedures examined fitted the singular bill. It was therefore decided to put prospective candidates through a series of tests to establish their suitability for ‘residencia’. One would think that the ability to walk and talk simultaneously would be qualification enough for residence in Alqueria. If one could also adequately ride a bike it would suggest an intellect of gigantic proportion when compared to the mental capability of the present incumbent Alquerian population. The Alquerian Government however wanted the ‘creme de la creme’ of immigrants and ‘set the bar high’. Test number one: The prospective candidate had to demonstrate that they called a local plumber
hours. Some candidates naively simply phoned, another offered wine and tapas and one enterprising individual offered his wife. None were unsuccessful. One plumber, the one offered wine and tapas did turn up but after consuming the repast suddenly remembered he had left his tool bag at home and was never seen again. Test number two: To order a meal at the Restaurante Grasiento Gabino. It isn’t the restaurant that is the problem but the waiter Roberto. He talks and talks describing the menu in minute detail, it’s what he was born to do. A family of three tried, Mother went into a coma through hunger, husband went into a catatonic trance through boredom and the child missed his fifth birthday. Roberto spends so long in his descriptive oratory that no food has been served for three years, the kitchen is closed and deserted. Test number three: To successfully notify the British Pension Office of a change of address. No one even attempted this task. The bar was indeed too high and no candidates emerged successful. It was then decided to issue residence to those who managed to spell their name correctly on the application form. Two were accepted, two rather strange individuals, more of them later.
Enchanting Spain - out now
From Santiago de Compostela in the north-west to Granada in the southeast via Madrid in the centre, Enchanting Spain reveals the fascinating breadth and depth of this exuberant country. The Moorish Alhambra, Toledo’s Jewish quarter, the Roman amphitheatre at Mérida and Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia, the famously unfinished cathedral, each show a different aspect of Spain’s complex history, now intermingled with fabulously contemporary museums and art centres. The major towns sparkle with life, which visitors can share through the vibrant night scene, the delicious food and wine, the flamenco performances and the abundant festivals. The landscape is diverse and dramatic, whether you are discovering the sundrenched beaches of Andalucía, hiking in the Picos de Europa or taking a trip down the Guadalquivir River. Enchanting Spain is a portrait in words and images of both the familiar and the unexpected pleasures of this vibrant country. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------John MacDonald has written for many Spanish and international publications and has a special interest in Spanish history. Stolen Goods
When I returned home from Urgencias with my newly mended arm in its pristine plaster cast of blinding white I knew that sooner or later I would suffer Plaster Itch. The universally accepted alleviative for this irritating condition is a knitting needle, so in order to be prepared when the inevitable manifested itself I searched the house in vain for such, or for anything that might pass as such. The nearest I could find was a barbecue skewer. However, this is such a long, sharp and generally lethal weapon to use on one delicate arm encased in one small plaster that it was like going sparrow shooting with a Kalashnikov. But I could find nothing better – our house is a knitting needle-free zone. Shortly afterwards we were again patronising the services of the Hospital Inmaculada, but for another reason entirely. Business completed, we headed for the Restaurante for a strengthening bite of something, which in my case was a Pincho. I chose a Pincho because it is possible to eat it one-handed without too much loss of dignity – you don’t have to get someone to cut it up for you, neither do you have to chase it around the plate before finally capturing it and transferring it to mouth in a sort of gulp that would offend any well-bred pig. As I delicately picked the meat from the skewer I couldn’t help but notice that the skewer was the exact length

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk and thickness of a knitting needle – it would be perfect for Plaster Itch. Picked clean it lay on my plate, smooth and gleaming, nicely rounded at one end and stabproof blunted at the other. Fate, I reasoned, had put it in my path – Fate had seen my need, and was coming to my rescue; it would be ungrateful of me to ignore her intervention. Silently I thanked her, picked it up, wiped it clean and stuffed it in my handbag - I stole the Hospital’s skewer! Today I was back in the Restaurante after the removal of my plaster. I wondered briefly if I should return my contraband – was The Case of the Stolen Skewer was still open? Or would the re-appearance of the skewer simply draw attention to me as a suspect? Would I be able to escape prosecution on the grounds of Diminished Responsibility? No, I think I’ll keep quiet – I think I may have got away with it!

Gazpacho Andaluz
Ingredients
1 green pepper 1 yellow pepper 1 red pepper 1 small cucumber 6 tomatoes 4 onions 3 garlic cloves Salt, pepper, Tabasco 75 ml red wine vinegar 60 ml olive oil 1 pinch ground cumin 100 g sandwich bread ½ bunch basil
Fried Chipirones (Baby Squid)
To Serve Ingredients
500g Chipirones 300g flour (for gluten free, use rice flour) Oil for frying Salt and Lemon, for serving
Sandwich bread, cut into thin slices green, red and yellow bell pepper, diced Basil leaves
To Serve
Sprinkle the squid with salt and add lemon wedges to each serving for squeezing over.
Method
Wash the squid well under cold running water, then drain and pat dry with a paper towel. Place the squid in a bowl and add the remaining ingredients. Toss until well coated Fry the squid in a non stick frying pan. Cook for only a few minutes: if overcooked, the squid will become rubbery.
Method
Peel the peppers and cucumber carefully. Blanch and peel the tomatoes. Roughly chop all the vegetables and place in a large bowl. Finely chop the onions and garlic cloves and add to the bowl. Season with salt, pepper and a few drops of Tabasco. Add the red wine vinegar, olive oil and ground cumin. Remove and discard the crust from the sandwich bread. Cut the centre of the bread into slices and add to the bowl. Mix together well and leave to marinate for one hour in the refrigerator. Blend until smooth and pass the soup through a large sieve Check the seasoning. To serve: fill four glasses with cold gazpacho. Decorate with the diced peppers and bread crisps. Finish with a sprig of basil.

F O K TAL N W O T E H T PERFECT STEAK EVERYTIME AT THE HOT STONE The Hot Stone, Urbanisation El Raso has become well known now for quality food. Glitz and Glam ball raises €1000 for AECC
Quesada Pink Lady Debbie Weedon organised a Glitz and Glam ball which took place on Friday 27th May at Marabu lounge. The night was a huge success and through ticket sales, raffle and football cards raised €901. Then one of the guests offered to make it up to €1000. People were so generous even the winners of the football cards donated their winnings back! The night started with a sumptuous 3 course meal then there was dancing to local singers Kevin Bonser, Ed Blundell Williams and Max Bacon who were all fantastic and even performed for free. All the ladies looked amazing in their evening dresses and the men smart and handsome in their tuxedos. Debbie would like to thank Marabu lounge for their great service, the artistes and guests for making the night so fantastic and the local businesses who generously donated raffle prizes.

The Lomax Ladies Singles Cup between two previous holders of the cup with Sylvia holding it three years ago and Janet defending her title of last year.
Cabrera Lawn Bowling Club hosted the Lomax Ladies Singles Cup. There, as always, were some very good rounds but none more so than the semi-finals which were played under very extreme windy conditions. It was a case of who could master the conditions the better. Sylvia Byrne was against Sandra Marriott and Lynne Hughes-Jones was against Janet Jackson. Sylvia came out the victor against Sandra and Janet against Lynne. Both were extremely competitive matches. The final was
Sylvia started off in blistering form and was 14-0 up after 4 ends. As this competition is the first to 21 points the spectators thought it would be all over very soon. After 7 ends the score was 16-2 so at least Janet had managed to get on the score board. Then the tide turned in Janet’s favour who I have to say never gave up and after 11 ends was 17-6 behind. Sadly for Sylvia she didn’t score another point and after 19 ends Janet won the match 21-17. A brilliant fight back from Janet to retain her title and commiserations to Sylvia for putting up a gallant fight.

ADOPT FOSTER SPONSOR Find your next best friend at the animal shelter K9 Club is a non-profit, animal welfare group run totally by volunteers who are dedicated to the rescuing and re-homing of abandoned animals in the Costa Blanca area. We rely totally on public donations through fundraising and our two shops, one in Almoradi and one on La Marina, all the money we raise goes towards maintaining a high level of care for our animals. We are able to run a van which not only is used for the transportation of our animals but can also be used for the collection of any items the public wish to donate for either of our shops. We would like to hear from people who have time to spare and who love DIY, especially tiling, painting and general maintenance, as well as those of you who would love to assist the Kennel Managers with tasks such as dog grooming, dog walking and cat chatting. Working with our animals is incredibly rewarding and we have many that, for one reason or another, will never be adopted. All our animals are really friendly and would love to meet you. Our animal shelter is situated in the Catral/ Crevillent/Elche Area. We are always looking for more volunteers, so if you have a few hours a week to spare, please call 610832726 for more information, we have something to suit all tastes.

Hyundai Tucson road test
By Tim Saunders We live in an era of big grilles. This phenomenon has only started recently but any car you care to think of now boasts one, from the Ford Fiesta to the Peugeot 508. It has only really hit me during my test of the Hyundai Tucson; the chunky off roader with permanent four wheel drive. It too has a big grille, which definitely enhances its character as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz. In a marketplace where there are a range of Chelsea tractors it is an increasing challenge for manufacturers to set themselves apart from the competition. Like an artist or writer might look to others for inspiration, bits have clearly been taken from elsewhere. For instance, a quick glance at the rear reminds me of the considerably more expensive Porsche Cayenne but thankfully the front has greater character. I do find that the rear lights get in the way a bit when loading shopping into the boot. Probably my fault because the trolley is to the right and I have to negotiate the protruding lights. But I am in a car park and cannot put the trolley immediately beside the boot because there is not room. However, there are some luxurious touches to this
sub £30,000 motor, which make your head turn, too. I don’t expect to find heated rear seats that the passengers can operate themselves. Neither do I expect to find that the steering wheel can be switched from normal to sports mode. It’s a neat touch but I question how necessary this is. The seats are leather. “The Hyundai Tucson revives a name the firm used for its mid-sized SUV in days gone by,” says Parkers, the car experts. “We’re not talking centuries ago, though – the previous generation was on sale between 2004 and 2009, but was replaced by the ix35. However, that name didn’t last long, and the Tucson has been reintroduced in an effort to take on highly established and capable rivals including the Nissan Qashqai, Renault Kadjar and Mazda CX-5.” Eldest daughter Harriett (4) has just started big school and during the test the Hyundai takes her to this new place each morning. “I like being high up,” she says. This is a great attraction of such a vehicle because it affords driver and passengers a good view of the road ahead. I certainly find myself seeing things that I would never have the opportunity of seeing in my usual runabout; houses that are usually hidden away from view, for example. The Tucson is an easy vehicle to drive but despite the helpful reversing camera such a manoeuvre can be difficult and time consuming when trying to
get within the white lines in a car park. I give up and take two spaces. There is a blind spot when reversing and this is a bit of a flaw for me because the Tucson does feel a little too big and cumbersome for me. Remove this problem and it would be almost perfect. Other little issues are the noises that this vehicle makes when you drive too fast or get too near the centre white line of the road. I discover that I can switch the lane departure warning off but I really fail to see why all these beeps and buzzers are included. They just serve to irritate. Sometimes it is all too easy for manufacturers to include as many bells and whistles as they can in the hope of ticking every box regardless of whether they are necessary or not. As with writing the Kiss principle impressed upon my by my former news editor would not go a miss. Keep It Simple Stupid. Book Review
The Wrong Girl by Laura Wilson
www.carolnaylor.blogspot.com - www.carolesleynaylor.wordpress.com - naylorcl@hotmail.es
“Everything was in a mess. She’s been left in this horrible room because she was the wrong girl. She wasn’t good enough to be Phoebe or have a mum like Melissa. Of course she wasn’t. How could she ever have thought she was?” We can all sympathise with being in the wrong place at the wrong time can’t we? But imagine having the wrong life and being the wrong person? Does that make any sense? Once you’ve worked through the complexities of this plot with these dysfunctional characters that all seem to have fragile egos appearing to be very unstable and grossly unhappy it should make sense. This is typical of Guardian crime reviewer, Laura Wilson and this one is certainly worthy of your time. Wilson reminds us throughout that whatever actions we have taken in the past, they will always come back to haunt us. Guilt unfortunately, may define us, so how do we choose the guilt we can live with and repress it as long as we struggle through day to day living? Can we ever escape the burdens and actions of the past? Probably not. The Prologue intrigues us with a Mr Fix-it, alias mystery man, sounding dejected and suicidal. “Everything had gone wrong too many times.” Our mystery man was a roadie in the past, forty years back. He refers to a missing child and inevitably, his inability to be able to bring back the child. Sounds ominous, doesn’t it? We are also told that there is a mystery surrounding his parentage and of course, his identity. It’s what he refers to as knowing and not knowing like honesty or lying, something that alcoholics do and he should know. Mystery man was on a mission to retrace the past, to visit a man from the 60s and find out answers but he was running out of time. He also wanted to protect Molly. Molly Armitage is Suzie’s daughter. Mother, daughter and Tom had been staying at the Old Rectory in Repshall with Dan Carthy Todd. Dan was 66 when he dies suddenly. Ten year old Molly discovered his waxwork like form and this gave her nightmares that he would come back to haunt her. Suzie phones Janice, Dan’s sister who also happens to be her birth mother that she has not had contact with in over 44 years. Janice was pregnant at 19 and was persuaded by her parents to have the child adopted. Two marriages, short-lived, ending in divorce, left her financially comfortable with properties in Notting Hill Gate and Suffolk which allowed her to travel extensively and enjoy an affluent lifestyle. Janice had grown apart from Dan. He had moved back to his parents’ home in Norfolk to look after them whilst the sister enjoyed a carefree, more hedonistic type of existence and after their deaths, he remained in modest surroundings as an odd-job man, helping where help was needed. The last time Janice had seen Dan was in 2008, for Ma’s funeral. Receiving the phone call from her one and only daughter proved too much. Throughout the novel Janice constantly reflects on abandoning her child and tries to explain to a fragile, unstable Suzie how she has always been haunted by this action. The wrong action. We are told that Janice always seems to be selfcentred and controlled. Through life’s tribulations she hasn’t shed a tear and as readers, we don’t feel sympathetic towards her. Meeting her middle-aged daughter

and two grand-children overwhelms her, especially when Dan has just died and she has to arrange a funeral. Suzie carries feelings of anger and hatred towards her: “If you’d really loved me, you wouldn’t have let me go. Then how could you do it?” A difficult one to answer. Understandably, having to confront her demons turns her into a blubbering wreck. We are taken back to the swinging 60s, with rock stars and gigs and days of tripping. For Janice it was meant to be a time of sexual liberation and freedom. “Everyone got stoned.” She had a fling with Jeff and then a more serious one with Joe: “Joe was a rock star, and they were expected to take drugs and be crazy.” She called herself his ex-girlfriend or groupie believing the relationship was real: it was “something real, something that formed part of who she was.” His sister Marie had been killed at a young age and this has had a profound effect on him. “Ribbons in the Wind” was probably dedicated to his sister. Drugs ruined his career and he was kicked out from the Weather Ship where he became a recluse, suffering a breakdown and having to seek psychiatric help. His existence was Spartan compared to his glamorous days as a rock and roll star, no heroism and nothing spectacular. Tributes were still being left outside his home, close to Dan’s. Always remembered. Molly bears a striking resemblance to a projected image of Phoebe Piper, a girl who has been missing for seven years. She discovers a letter left by Dan to Joe with two photos, in his garden shed and is convinced that she is Phoebe and not Molly. She keeps a scrapbook of newspaper cuttings relating to Phoebe’s disappearance and becomes mortified when she reads that the Pipers are divorcing. “Not being able to catch up with the life you were supposed to have was a lot worse than coming last in the sack race, because if you couldn’t do that, then you’d never be able to belong anywhere.” A reference to Joe and a ribbon seemed crucial for Molly’s adopting her new life as the right girl otherwise “she’d be the wrong girl for the rest of her life and she’d never ever be happy.” She was suspicious when Janice arrived in Norfolk and would not accept her as a grandmother. Within a short space of time, Molly goes missing, leaving Suzie bereft and Janice feeling useless, at odds with the daughter she needs forgiveness from. What are they going to do? We are told about the Sneaky Man also known as the Catweazle, obsessed with Joe who lives in the woods. Mark, Suzie’s boyfriend discovers a corpse which he assumes belongs to this man. We soon discover the darker side of the swinging 60s, Magic Malc, Malcolm Devlin, who used to supply magical substances to the 60s rock scene, completely mad and dangerous. In time, Janice learns to connect the 1967 picnic scene when she was tripping with the rock band with a disappearance of another girl, Lisa Wynn. Some grisly discoveries shake Janice’s awareness of those carefree days: “freedom was an illusion, and all of it meaningless.” The story contains so many twists and turns to engage your interest throughout. Enjoy. Publisher: Quercus Publishing Ltd. ISBN: 978-1-78206-312-4.

Intelligent Road Signs
A new wave of road signs in being installed across much of the main road network in Spain, all part of a multimillion euro investment scheme to make the roads safer. On the infamous N-332 around Torrevieja we have already seen illuminated signs offering more protection at roundabouts. Arrows which flash in the direction of movement and triangular signs that flash orange to warn us of the approaching hazard are just some of the signs that drivers have been getting used to for some time. This week, intelligent signs have been installed in one of the most problematic areas in terms of congestion, in the single-line section as the N-332 passes Torrevieja, which both monitor the flow of traffic on the roads and then communicate with each other to warn approaching drivers of queues ahead. These sign groups have two units, one which is the detector, the other the receptor and warning sign. When traffic flows freely the signs look like nothing more than a black square. But, when traffic is detected, the square displays an electronic version of the triangular P-31 road sign, warning of congestion, with flashing orange lights to attract attention. These are not the only intelligent signs being installed on the network. In other areas of Spain a number of junctions have already had warning systems installed which tell drivers on the main carriageway that there is a vehicle at a junction ahead on a minor road likely to join or cross the flow of traffic. Sensors built into the road, similar to those used to monitor traffic flow, become aware of the presence of a vehicle at the junction. They are able to identify
the size and type of vehicle, if needed, and then send the information to the warning sign located on the main carriageway, almost offering an extra set of eyes to the driver and the theoretical ability to see beyond bends and buildings ahead, thus reducing the surprise factor and, hopefully, reducing the risk. It is known under the name of “sistema de advertencia dinámica en intersecciones”, or “dynamic junction warning system”, which uses lowcost technology to exchange information between the vehicle, infrastructure and back to the vehicle, and so commonly known as “V2V”, the aim being to warn of the proximity of vehicles at junctions. Jaime Moreno, deputy director of Mobility at the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT), explains that, “when the system detects the presence of a vehicle approaching the intersection, this situation activates the alert signal for vehicles traveling the main stem, with p refe re nc e through the junction, so they can know well in advance this circumstance, adjusting their speed and taking extreme care”. So far, there are four locations in Spain where the system has been installed, chosen because of their high incident rate. Two of them, located in the provinces of Madrid and León, are also in locations known for their concentration of a high number of incidents. The locations are: Leon (in the N-VI, at kilometre 399); Madrid (also in the N-VI, pk 56); Navarra (N-113, pk 78) and A Coruña (N-634, pk 676). In these four locations, between 2012 and 2014, a total of 48 crashes occurred, resulting in the loss of 3 lives and injury to another 47 people.
N332 - Driving In Spain
Advice and information about driving in Spain.
1,688 Deaths on the Roads
The Spanish government has released the latest road fatality statistics, revealing that in 2015, a total of 1,688 people have been recorded as losing their lives on the roads of Spain, the same number as in 2014. However, there were 9,503 people seriously injured, which has dropped slightly from the 9,574 in 2015. The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior, Luis Aguilera, revealed the figures at a road safety and sustainability
conference, and covers the main road network throughout the country, except Catalonia and the Basque Country. In view of these results, Luis Aguilera has expressed the need to continue working with municipalities in general and with the police and those responsible for traffic Basque Country and Catalonia to ensure that the reduction in casualties occurs across all regions.
Toll Avoider Convicted by Court
A judge has ruled in favour of a toll road operating company after a campaign was launched across Spain to encourage drivers to refuse to pay for using the payment required motorway network. This is the first time a driver has been prosecuted through the courts for continual none payment of tolls, resulting in the driver being condemned to pay 358 euro plus interest for continually refusing to pay. The orchestrated campaign under the slogan “no vull pagar”, encouraging drivers to refuse to pay, spread through social network sites after a number of drivers believed the fees to be unfair on account of the huge debts owed by the operators to the public purse. In the ruling, the judge has confirmed that the toll road operators are justified in charging for the use of the network in order to offset the costs of construction, management and maintenance. In this particular case, the driver had avoided paying tolls on 60 occasions between April and August of 2012, on the C-32 and AP-7 motorway. The defendant admitted during the trial to have joined the network with “no intention of paying” but claimed to have only done so on 8 occasions. The evidence provided LOS DOLSES S.L by the concessionaire showed that there were many more: 56 in the case of the barriers of the C-32 and 4 in the case of the AP-7. BEST Therefore, the man, who lives in Barcelona, must pay 358 euros plus interest to the PRICES operator, as well as paying the legal fees. Of PAID CARS FOR CASH the 358 euro, 318 corresponds to the amount Call Spencer on 637 090 665 of tolls not paid at the time and 40 are by way MECHANIC WORKSHOP of damages for administrative expenses.

However, Muguruza played a solid service game to stay in the set and then clinched it with some wonderful hitting down both tram lines. López and López become the first all-Spanish pairing to win the men’s doubles trophy at Roland-Garros since Serge Casals and Emilio Sanchez in 1990. The Spaniards did not drop serve until the seventh game of the decider - the second of three breaks in a row which set Feliciano López up to serve for the title. He duly capped the stunning day for Spain with an ace. Both players fell to the ground when they realised their feat. Tears streamed down the cheeks of Marc Lopez, who had twice suffered the disappointment of being runner-up in Grand Slam finals in 2014, with Marcel Granollers here and at the US Open. thinkspain

Spain's Garbiñe Muguruza beat World No. 1 Serena Williams 7-5, 6-4 to win her first Grand Slam title at the French Open on Saturday. The 22-year-old Muguruza is the first Spanish woman to win Roland Garros since Arantxa SánchezVicario in 1998. "I'm so, so excited - to play in a Grand Slam against one of the best players, it's the perfect final," Muguruza said. "I'm so happy. I had to be very ready and concentrated on all the points and just to fight as much as I can. "All the matches I've played against her helped me. It's our favourite tournament in Spain and I want to thank all my Spanish supporters." Fourth seed Muguruza's straight sets win made amends for her loss against Williams in last year's Wimbledon final. Although it was Muguruza who got the first break of serve, it was

United's De Gea wants Real talk to cease before Euro kick-off
United's De Gea wants Real talk to cease before Euro kick-off No contact has been made either with the keeper or his agent. Florentino Pérez is still keen to sign De Gea but Zidane prefers Keylor Navas. David de Gea has the sensation that Real Madrid are not going to trigger a clause in his Manchester United contract stating that the Bernabéu can acquire the Spain keeper for 50 million euros before June 15. With just 10 days to go until that date arrives, there has been no contact between Real Madrid, the player’s agent Jorge Mendes or De Gea himself. Florentino Pérez is still keen to bring the 25-year-old to Madrid but Zinedine Zidane has already told the board that he prefers Keylor Navas and would like to have the Costa Rica keeper between the sticks next season. Zidane is thought to have already told Navas, before the Frenchman went on his post-season holiday, that he will be the number one for 2016-17. Navas elected not to play at the Copa América this month in order to undergo surgery to correct an Achilles tendon problem so that he will be in peak condition for Real Madrid when the season starts. AS ran a survey on March 10 asking readers to choose their preferred keeper for next season, in which 79 percent responded in favour of Navas. Another factor that could determine De Gea’s future is the arrival of José Mourinho at Old Trafford. The Portuguese has spoken to the Spain international

Liam Smith eyes Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez after successful title defence
Smith won the WBO title against John Thompson in October
Liam Smith set his sights on Mexico’s Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez after defending his WBO light-middleweight title with a second-round knockout of Predrag Radosevic in Liverpool. The Liverpool fighter felled Radosevic with a left hook to the body and the Montenegrin failed to beat the count. It was the 13th knockout victory of his career and extends his unbeaten record to 23 wins and one draw. and given him his vote of confidence and expressed his desire that he remain at Manchester United. De Gea was grateful for the gesture, given that he barely spoke to Louis van Gaal, and Mourinho’s arrival could sway his thinking. Spain start their Euro 2016 campaign on June 13 against the Czech Republic. Although the famous 50-million-euro clause in his contract expires on June 15, De Gea wants his future completely resolved before Spain’s inaugural match in France. The Manchester United stopper is expected to be Vicente del Bosque’s first choice in France and he wants to concentrate entirely on the tournament. Any announcement about a deal with Real Madrid during the Euros could prove to be a distraction for both De Gea and the team as a whole. Whatever the resolution, it is likely to be cleared up sooner rather than later. http://en.as.com
“I’d be a liar if I said Canelo doesn’t get my stomach going,” Smith, 27, said. Smith is a possible opponent for Alvarez’s next fight, expected to be in Las Vegas in September. “Every time anyone mentions Canelo and Vegas to me, it gives me goose
bumps,” Smith added.
WBC middleweight champion Alvarez is regarded as one of the world’s best pound-for-pound fighters, and defended his title against Britain’s Amir Khan last month. On the undercard at the Echo Arena, Liverpool’s Tom Stalker became the new WBO European lightweight champion after unanimously outpointing Antonio Joao Bento of Portugal. However, Liverpool’s Ryan Farrag lost his EBU European bantamweight title after being knocked out in the third round by Karim Guerfi of France. http://www.bbc.com
Leganes win historic first promotion to La Liga Leganes made history when the small town club from the south of Madrid earned promotion from the Liga Adelante to the BBVA Primera Liga for the first time on Saturday. A 1-0 win away to Mirandes thanks to a 48th minute Pablo Insua goal was enough to earn Leganes, based in a sleeper town just south of the capital, a ticket to the top flight following Alaves’ promotion the previous weekend. The last weekend of the regular season started with Leganes and Gimnastic Tarragona battling it out for second place with Leganes knowing a win away to Mirandes would see them up, while Gimnastic were at home to Alaves looking for a win and hoping Leganes would drop points.

Gimnastic’s game ended in a 1-1 draw and they will go into the play-offs along with Girona, Cordoba and Osasuna, while Bilbao Athletic (Athletic Club Bilbao’s B-team), Albacete, Llagostera and Ponferradina were relegated to the third tier of the Spanish game.

Muhammad Ali remembered: By Tony Matthews
Last Friday (3 June), world superstar Muhammad Ali passed away, aged 74, in Phoenix, Arizona. He had been suffering with Parkinson’s for over 30 years. Born Cassius Marcellus Clay in Louisville, Kentucky in January 1942, he won six USA ‘Golden Glove’ titles and an Olympic gold medal in Rome in 1960 before turning professional. He then went on to have 61 heavyweight fights, winning 56 of them, 37 by a knock-out. Nicknamed by himself as the ‘Greatest’, he was world champion three times in 1964, 1974 and 1978, and was involved in two of the mosttalked about contests ever – against George Foreman (The Rumble in the Jungle) in 1974 and against Joe Frazier (The Thriller in Manilla) a year later. And, of course, he was also knocked down by Henry Cooper in London, but still got up and won! He refused to do his National Service and was sentenced to four years in prison but he appealed, won his case and never went behind bars. A black civil rights activist, he changed his name from Clay to Ali in 1964 (after beating Sonny Liston to become world champion for the first time) and thereafter became a sporting hero. Whether you like boxing or not, everyone seemed to know Muhammad Ali - or the ‘Louisville Lip’, another nickname his was given. In fact, someone said, if he parachuted down from the sky and landed anywhere in the world, people would know who he was! I had the pleasure of being in his company in August 1983 when he opened a youth community centre in
Hockley, Birmingham… and even then 4,000 people turned up just to get a glimpse of their hero! All too frequently, the word legend is used when talking about a star performer (in all walks of life)… but on this occasion, Muhammad Ali was certainly a true legend. Married twice, he leaves a wife, seven daughters and two sons. This is what he always told people of the world and wanted each and everyone to know....
"I would like to be remembered as a man who won the world heavyweight title three times, who was humorous and who treated everyone right… As a man who never looked down on those who looked up to him and who helped as many people as he could… As a man who stood up for his beliefs no matter what… As a man who tried to unite all humankind through faith and love… And if that's too much, then I guess I'd settle for being remembered only as a great boxer who became a leader and a champion of his people. And I wouldn't even mind if folk forgot how pretty I was! Like
Martin Luther King, his spirit will live on… and on… and on. R.I.P.

Novak Djokovic beats Andy Murray to claim first French Open title
• No1 seed triumphs 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 for first title at Roland Garros • Djokovic completes grand slam and now holds all four slam titles Paris has irretrievably fallen in love with Novak Djokovic and remains quietly indifferent to the moody charm of the man he defeated soundly on Sunday, Andy Murray. Novak Djokovic plays spectacularly well to come from a set down to wallop Andy Murray; he wins his first French Open and becomes the first man since 1969 to hold all four Grand Slam titles concurrently The courting of the Serb began in two failed finals against their near-invincible nine-times king, Rafael Nadal, bloomed when he fell again, tearfully, in the face of a muscular onslaught by Stan Wawrinka a year ago, and was sealed in the final on Sunday when he defeated Murray in four sets, his victory speech blessed from above as the sun pierced clouds that had held Roland Garros in their gloomy grip for a week. It was Murray’s first final here, breaking another of those long British sporting droughts, this one stretching back to 1937 when Bunny Austin got to the decider and lost. Fred Perry was the last British player to win the men’s title, in 1935, and that record might stand for a little longer. This was, as Murray knew, his best chance yet to win the French Open, partly for reasons
over which he had no control, mainly because he came to Roland Garros on a wave of soaring confidence. Nadal quit after two ominous wins. Federer withdrew earlier to protect a back strain. And Murray was playing the best clay-court tennis of his career. He lost to Djokovic in the Madrid final, and beat him in Rome to win the Italian Open. He was primed to make the most of what John McEnroe called “his best shot ever”. He also came to the closing Sunday on the back of a blistering dismissal of Wawrinka in Friday’s semi-final. The problem was Djokovic was in similarly great form, having beaten the young Austrian star Dominic Thiem with contained menace later that day. And back it came – with interest. Neither player hit the heights of the semi-final blitzes on Friday, but Djokovic came close. He won 59% of return points on second serve – and the end-of-match total, 122 to 97, told the story of the dominance. It wasn’t close, despite the nervy finish. It might be at Wimbledon, if they meet in the final, but Djokovic left another bruise on an opponent he must increasingly regard with fondness for all the wrong reasons. Murray desperately needs to beat him in a slam to recalibrate their relationship https://www.theguardian.com
Last Wednesday the society made the short journey to Algorfa to play La Finca, a course which the society hasn´t played for some time. It was a glorious sunny day with clear blue skies and sunshine although the wind did get up a bit on the back nine. The greens had been recently hollow-tined and had not yet fully recovered so putting wasn´t that easy with the sand slowing the ball down and the ball prone to a bit of bobbling. Nonetheless everyone had a good day. It was a full turn-out with 36 players competing in an individual stableford competition with gold and silver divisions. The winner of the gold division was the half Italian Nick “Cappuccino” Capasso with 31 points. In second place on C/B with 29 points was the big Scotsman Gordon McGregor who pipped Stormin Norman Lewis. In the silver division in first place on C/B was David Trotman with 27 points. The gold division beckons David. In second place was Mark Goode who had a good day and in third place was Nottingham born Paul Flanaghan who is having a good year. The best guest with the best score on the day was Ron Smith who came in with 32 points. The winners of the nearest the pins were Sue Forbes, Brent Hollins, David McSweeney, Glenys Thomas, Tony Patterson and Paul Flanaghan. The biggest winner
on the day was Irish lass Sheila McSweeney who took home two fists full of euro´s after getting the only 2 on the day and adding to this another 20€ from winning the scratchcard with Wolves. Hopefully she will treat her
Quesada Golf Society
hubby David to a menu del dia. After the game the players returned to the society base at the bright and airy refurbished bar area at the Quesada Country Club for the presentations, a drink or two and a tasty hot and cold buffet kindly provided by mine hosts. The next society game is on Wednesday 15 June at Las Colinas which already has a waiting list as it is probably the most popular course we play. Anyone in the Quesada area looking to join a very friendly golf society and play golf once a fortnight at a wide variety of courses at a very reasonable cost, should contact the Chairman & Membership Secretary Les Pancott on 966 716 723.
