Spanish intelligence to recruit 500 agents to spy on ISIS online
Spanish spooks want to recruit 500
additional
agents
to
fight
against the threat of Islamic State
(IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL). They will spy on alleged jihadists online, tracking propaganda and recruitment, the intelligence chief said. The National Intelligence Agency (CNI) wants to complete the expansion of its ranks by 2020, its head Felix Sanz Roldan said on Thursday. It’s part of the new national counter-terrorism
June 2016
strategy adopted last year. The new agents would be specialists in “mathematics, telecommunications and computers,” Sanz Roldan said at a security and defence seminar in Toledo. Their skills are necessary to fight the new brand of techsavvy terrorism that IS practise, he said as cited by the Spanish media. The CNI considers jihadist groups a paramount threat to Spain at the moment, surpassing that of domestic extremists such as the Basque separatist group ETA, the director of the agency said. It downsized the department dealing with domestic terrorism and beefed up foreign intelligence accordingly. Sanz Roldan said Spain was in close cooperation with intelligence services of other nations and that
PLAYA FLAMENCA FUNDRAISER SUCCESS
There seems no end to the number of charity days that are currently being organised by the kind people of the region the most recent of which was held at Flamenca Beach last Sunday afternoon in aid of both the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal and the Paul Cunningham Nurses. The event, organised by local fundraiser Eddie Coleman, was attended by yet another bumper crowd including the Councillor for Tourism and Beaches Sofia Alvarez. During her opening address she highlighted the devotion made to such ‘good causes’ by members of the local community as well as complimenting the enthusiasm of the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums who she said seem to attend just about every one. She also welcomed the two Chelsea Pensioners, Skippy Teasdale and Wayne Campbell, both members of the Orihuela Costa Branch of the RBL, who regularly travel out to attend such events from UK, completely at their own expense. She said how pleased she was to see them at Playa Flamenca, once again supporting a fundraising event in the local community. The afternoon’s entertainment was provided by Sunshine FM and a dedicated band of entertainers who once again gave of their time absolutely free.
the anti-IS forces were “winning,” but added that ultimately defeating the group is likely to take a long time. Spain’s Secretary of State for Security Francisco Martinez Vazquez, who was also speaking at the seminar, said an estimated 170 Spanish citizens had left the country to join jihadists in the Middle East. Of those over 20 have returned to Spain and are either in custody or on a terrorist watch list. He stressed that some other European nations, such as France and the UK, had significantly more people with similar stories. https://www.rt.com

Further train driver strikes threaten rail traffic
ANOTHER series of rail strikes over working conditions and pay will affect the country this month, from last (Sunday). Train drivers downed tools for 24 hours on Friday this week, and have done so again today, but are required to guarantee ‘minimum services’. This means three-quarters of trains running at rush hour and on the outer suburban, or Cercanías lines; 72% of high-speed and long-distance routes will be assured, and 65% of mediumdistance trains will still be in service. Goods trains, which do not carry passengers, will run at 19% of their usual volume. A further two strikes are planned for this Tuesday, June 14, and Thursday, June 16. Although rail board RENFE bosses finally struck a deal with train drivers’ union SEMAF a few weeks back which workers were happy with, SEMAF does not believe RENFE has offered the ‘necessary guarantees’ that the measures will be put in place. RENFE is dragging its heels over the employment and sustainability steps it promised to put in place, including ‘structured’ redundancies rather than axing jobs en masse,
and promoting new investment in the State-run firm’s different activities. A reduction in ‘narrow rail’, or provincial short-haul services inherited from the now-extinct rail board FEVE, and a lack of investment in and promotion of transporting goods by train are among the other issues RENFE drivers cite. RENFE considers the strikes to be ‘unjustified’ given that, since the employment plan was signed on all sides, a total of 212 staff had taken voluntary redundancy and another 199 had joined the firm. Each day’s strike costs the rail board €5 million, RENFE complains, and right now will cause maximum disruption with the holiday season due to start and students returning home at the end of term. thinkspain
Two minor earthquakes on Costa Brava
TWO earthquakes have been reported in the province of Girona, inland from the Costa Brava. The first was recorded at 08.09hrs on Friday in Vilamalla, reaching 2.5 on the Richter scale, meaning most of the population did not feel it. But the second, at 08.57hrs on Friday which measured 3.5 on the Richter scale with its epicentre between the towns of Vilafant and Banyoles, caused widespread panic among residents. A flood of calls was received by the 112 emergency hotline, but no damage

4 General election campaign starts: Podemos-IU rockets in polls and PP could net 31% of votes
POLLS ahead of Spain's general election show left-wing independents Podemos is likely to scoop up more votes this time around, probably surpassing those of the socialists, or PSOE. +In December, Podemos – led by ponytailed university lecturer Pablo Iglesias – gained 69 seats to the 90 gained by the PSOE, the leftleaning one of the 'big two' which has dominated leadership almost since the start of democracy, along with the right-wing PP. United Left (IU) gained just two, but now it has joined forces with Podemos, the coalition is fast heading towards the top of the list. But at completely the opposite end of the political scale, the acting government, run by the PP and president Mariano Rajoy, is expected to gain more votes. Six months ago, the PP gained just 28.72% of the votes but as at today, would take 31%, according to two polls for Spanish daily newspapers – the NC Report for La Razón and the Sigma Dos for El Mundo. They say the PP would gain 130 seats, compared with the 126 it won in December, although still not enough for an outright majority, which would be 176. But the polls do not consider centre-right Ciudadanos would win enough seats to ensure the PP a majority if the two parties combined, meaning the PP would not get back into power unless it had the vote in favour of the PSOE, or at least its agreement to abstain during the in-house elections. Speculation is now rife that the Podemos-IU coalition – running for election as Unidos Podemos, which translates as 'united we can', could end up as the second-strongest political force after the PP, and form a left-wing government with the PSOE. Campaigning officially started today (Saturday) 16 days before the elections, due for Sunday,
ort
June 26. Podemos has suffered some criticism for campaign footage featuring children, with nonsupporters saying minors should not be used for political purposes. The manifesto shows Iglesias' party, along with United Left and its leader Alberto Garzón, posing in various rooms of a des-res home and has been compared with an Ikea advert. A left-leaning government would, in the PP's opinion, be a backward step as the right-wing has reduced the country's debt and strengthened the economy. But the left-wing points out that the debt has increased since Rajoy came into power in November 2011, taxes and poverty have rocketed, and although unemployment is slightly lower it is still unacceptably high at over 20% and most new jobs are lowpaid, temporary and part-time. Rajoy's labour reform was heavily criticised by the opposition, the workforce and economic experts as driving down wages, worsening employment conditions and making it easier and cheaper for companies to fire staff. But for some business owners, it has helped ease their financial difficulties when forced to close down for economic reasons. The PSOE wants to scrap most of it, whilst Ciudadanos only wants to amend parts of it and Podemos and IU want to revoke it altogether. Rajoy has pledged to cut taxes if he returns to power, but many voters who have defected to the left do not believe him as he promised not to increase IVA or income tax if he became president back in 2011, and immediately did both. Only time will tell whether a new government will be able to ease the financial pressure on the public, or whether it will be forced to take similar measures to those of the PP to ensure Spain's economic stability. thinkspain

Madrid cops 'overwhelmed' as pickpockets target Primark
Spain's biggest Primark opened in October 2015 to great fanfare, but now police have demanded the discount clothing store increase security after a wave of thefts. The five-floor shop sits on Madrid’s iconic Gran Vía and is the biggest Primark in mainland Europe. For several weeks after its opening, customers had to queue to get in, demand for the brand’s cheap and cheerful clothing was so high. But the huge crowds have also drawn huge numbers of thieves, who have been stealing from the store itself as well as pickpocketing its customers. The problem has become so bad that police in Madrid have asked Primark to employ extra security staff to tackle the issue. Police have already broken up four pickpocketing gangs, Madrid’s head of police Alfonso José Fernández said during a police display in Madrid’s Las Ventas, adding that there had been a "wave of
thefts" and police were "overwhelmed". He said that there had been over 300 reports of theft made to the police station in nearby Calle Leganitos - the closest to the store - every month since Primark opened in October 2015. Fernández confirmed he had asked Primark to reinforce its security by employing extra staff, adding that he had put extra officers on the beat in the area and dismantled four criminal gangs operating within the store. Primark overtook Spanish brand Zara to become Spain's most popular fashion store in terms of number of customers in 2015. In 2015 alone 8.9 million customers made purchases in Primark stores in Spain, beating Zara's 8.2 million customers. thelocal
Catalan Company Develops Automatic Barbecue That You Control with an App
This is a completely novel invention. Up until now, we’d seen barbecues that could analyse and measure the temperature of the heat, but they couldn’t be programmed with just one click of a screen-app. The Catalan company that has invented this new barbecue expects to earn an astonishing figure of 1.5 million euros just this year. Boneless Grills, the name of this enterprising company, has created a barbecue which incorporates a touch screen and an automatic control centre that enables you to schedule the cooking of your food through a mobile application. Applications that allow you to read the temperature of the grill already exist, but not those that allow the consumer to adjust and program an actual barbecue precisely. The company has its headquarters in Barcelona, and has initiated a strategy
of expansion towards the United States. From there it will target other countries and regions such as Germany, Mexico or Hong Kong, where a commercial link has already been discussed. "In the United States and Canada more than 14 million barbecues are sold every year, generating more than 8,900 million dollars of profit. Boneless Grills estimates to reach a turnover of 1.5 million euros in 2016, a figure that is proposed to quadruple in 2017. In addition, the business is aiming to improve its penetration of the luxury segment of the United States and to consolidate and then preserve its organizational structure, increase its workforce and open a new headquarters in Florida. CHARACTERISTICS OF SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS WOMEN
SELF BELIEF Read the written journals or listen to the speeches of these successful business women and you will observe that they had a firm belief that they were destined to be great. They believed in themselves; what others said about them didn’t matter. They never looked for problem solvers; they believed they were the problem solvers and that belief worked for them. FAITH Faith is moving ahead, even in the face of uncertainty. Did these successful business women have faith? My answer is yes. No one can build a successful business without faith because business is a game where you thrive on uncertainty. When starting a business; success is never guaranteed, compared to climbing the corporate ladder. If you lack faith, you won’t have the drive to press on even when there’s no sign of progress. PASSION If there’s one thing that propels successful business women forward; it is passion. Successful women entrepreneurs are passionate about what they do
and that’s why they built a business around what they love to do best. HUMBLE Entrepreneurship is a life-long process and successful business women know this. Things change so fast in the business world; you could be an innovation today and become obsolete tomorrow. To stay on course and adapt swiftly to the ever changing trend, successful women entrepreneurs keep studying and learning. They read industrial journals, books and magazines. They attend seminars and update themselves regularly with the latest industrial trend. Successful female entrepreneurs know that their cup is never full; they know that they don’t have the right answers to all questions. So they humble themselves and learn when availed the opportunity. HANDLE CRITICISM Show me a business woman who hasn’t been criticized and I will show you an average woman. Successful women entrepreneurs were able to achieve success because they refused to be bugged down by negative comments. From Oprah Winfrey and Rachael Ray to Martha Stewart; they have all been criticized heavily. If you are an individual that listens to other people’s opinion before taking action; then your success will be limited.

Royal Ascot is Britain’s most valuable race meeting, attracting many of the world’s finest racehorses to compete. Anticipated and revered, Royal Ascot is made for socialising. These five days are long seen as a spectacle of fashion and style. Each year the race is broadcast to millions of viewers around the world, yet to experience it in person is altogether more special. In 1711, Ascot Racecourse was founded by Queen Anne whilst out riding near Windsor Castle, she came upon an open of heath that looked, in her words “ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch”. The first race meeting took place later that year on 11th August. Open to any horse, mare or gelding over six years old, the race was worth 100 guineas. Each horse was required to carry a weight of 12 stone. The race consisted of three separate heats, each four miles long. Sadly there was no record of who claimed first place. Although founded by a Queen and located on Crown property, the administration of Ascot is handled on behalf of the Crown by a representative appointed by the Monarch. The Ascot Authority was established in 1913 by an

Summer colors should brighten your spirits:
There is nothing better than a warm day with a cool breeze whistling through your open windows to get you in a summer mood. Bring this feeling into your interiors with colours that brighten your spirits and entertaining mood. You can learn a lot from nature: green grass, soft aquamarine blue water, sandy tan beach sand and all the colours that remind you of a beach vacation can come into your living room. As nature changes its colours, so should your home. Add a colourful couch with accent pillows that becomes the star attraction of the room – or spread your colour out throughout with a colour palette that beckons you and your guests to slow down and enjoy the season. Soft pastel tones that remind you of your favourite ice cream flavours are a favourite of many homeowners!
Summer hues can help your home loosen up:
In many adult homes the urge to want to make your interiors feel stodgy, mature and sophisticated can often stifle your personality and leave your home feeling lifeless. Bring summer colours into unexpected areas of your home. Kitchen cabinetry, appliances, laundry room appliances, and even countertop manufacturers are branching off from traditional colours with designer palettes. Look to your favourite kitchen and bath designer lines to see what new finishes are available. From hunter green sinks to chartreuse cabinet doors, you will have no excuse of why summer colours can’t make your interiors sing with childhood. Greet everyday with a burst of summer colour in your bedrooms: If you feel like you don’t have anything exciting to wake up to in your bedroom, think again. Summer colours can help you learn that your interiors shouldn’t be bland and colourful bedding; accent rugs, window treatments and accent pillows can enliven your sleeping experience. Start Repair & Install off with a dynamic Good, Fast, Low Cost accent colour on your bed wall Based in Quesda Home Improvements that will help set the tone as the C/ Los Arcos 17, Local 5, focal point of your Ciudad Quesada summer escape losarcos17@mail.com inspired bedroom. www.tyco-torrevieja.com Don’t be afraid to bring fresh flowers by your bedside, add framed summer vacation photos above your bed and use lamps and bedside table decor to pull your bedroom together. Don’t like a lot of colour? Instead, try using crisp whites and neutral colours for your bedding and then add a pop of colour with a throw blanket at the base of your bed. It will add just enough summer colour to enliven your mood in the morning and send you to bed with a smile every night.

Space Neil Armstrong was the first to walk on the moon; Buzz Aldrin followed him fifteen minutes later, immediately getting his name into the record books by becoming the first to pee on the moon. NASA edited the live feed so on people on Earth didn’t see Buzz undoing his flies; no seriously the space suits were fitted with special bags designed for that mundane purpose. The special bags were shaped like condoms; NASA designed three sizes for the Apollo astronauts to choose from before they blasted off. Men being men, they all chose LARGE. So to preserve their masculinity the bags were renamed large, gigantic and humongous. Space has a smell; on the Space Station, astronauts returning from space walks have reported an aroma reminiscent of grilled steak and welding fumes in the airlock. NASA has been unable to replicate the smell on earth. The weird smell is the nearest astronauts get to tasting a steak as the near zero gravity makes liquids rise so they get blocked noses as the mucus rises in their bodies. This makes tasting doubly difficult as not only are they bunged up but food aromas float away before they can reach their taste buds. Earth with our one solitary moon has nothing on

How the Poppy Appeal Money is spent in Spain The Royal British Legion provides lifelong support for the Armed Forces Community. At the Legion we are often asked “How much money do you raise for the Poppy Appeal and how is it spent here in Spain?” So having researched this, here is a “snap shot” of some of the ways we were able to help our beneficiaries last year. Firstly, we must thank all those generous people in our District of Spain for once again supporting the Legion. All nationalities donated to the Poppy Appeal and last year we raised over 171,000€ - a truly amazing amount. So – How was the money spent? Each year our enquiries are slightly different but here is a breakdown of just some of the help we were able to give with YOUR donations. • Stair lifts • Mechanical wheelchairs and scooters • Refurbishing homes so beneficiaries had a better standard of life, ie changes to a bathroom or bedroom • Wood, oil and solar panels have been purchased for isolated properties There were also smaller items, gas canisters, fridges and food, as well as dental bills and help with purchase of spectacles. Our caseworkers are always busy visiting and spending time with potential beneficiaries. The definition of a beneficiary is someone who has served in the Armed Forces or their dependant(s). On some occasions we are able to “sign post” someone to another charity or organisation and this means the person can get the best possible help available. If you feel the Legion may be able to help you or a relative you can either ring 676 451 780 or email welfare.rbl.dns@ gmail.com Details of the various Branches in the area are on our website www.britishlegion.org.uk/counties/spainnorth or you can email us on secretary.rbl.dns@gmail.com. Come along to one of our meetings or events and meet new friends and enjoy an active social life. Peggy Wyatt, Public Relations Officer, The Royal British Legion District North Spain.

Asking prices for homes in England and Wales reach record high in May
propert y services
Asking prices for homes in England and Wales have reached a record average of £308,151 in May, according to a report on Monday. Property website Rightmove said average asking prices rose £1,118 on last month despite a three percentage point stamp duty increase for buy-to-let investors and second home owners from 1 April, which was expected to slow the market. The price of an entrylevel home in England and Wales with two bedrooms or less - typically sought by first time buyers and buy-to-let investors - rose £11,298 on last month to £194,224 on average. Croydon was the top property hotspot with asking prices jumping 18.6% on last year to an average of £298,770. Dartford was also a popular area for people priced out of London with properties rising 18.5% to £244,310 on average. London continued to surge with asking prices up 10.8% on the year to an average of £644,088. The East of England saw asking prices jump an annualised 10.1% to £334,538 on average. Rightmove director Miles Shipside said the rush of buy-to-let investors snapping up properties before the increase in stamp duty had added to the supply shortage
issue in the market, pushing prices higher as a result. “Estate agents have perhaps been focused on getting investor sales through to completion before the tax hike, and some may have been surprised by the continuing momentum and scarcity of stock to meet ongoing demand,” he said. “The net effect is eye-watering increases in asking prices in some towns, and is further stretching first-time buyers’ affordability even though they are competing against fewer buy-to-let investors in the market.” The report follows a data from RICS last Thursday which showed demand in the property market had weakened in April as homebuyers brought forward purchases to March to beat the increase in taxes. RICS’s monthly house price balance edged lower to +41 in April from +42 in March, its lowest since June 2015. The Population Explosion ‘The Crazy Bitch Gazette: The magazine
Alqueria’s has a falling population. Those that pass away are not being replaced, the birthrate is zero. This is not because the process of human procreation isn’t practised, it is practised with ‘gusto’, the Pueblo’s national sport in fact. The problem is Remitroot, both an aphrodisiac and strong intoxicant. It leaves the male seed so disorientated it doesn’t know if it is Accession Day, Midsummer’s Day or the anniversary of the Battle of the River Plate and they often head off in the wrong direction. Also individuals seemed to prefer dying than actually living in Alqueria. Something had to be done and Alqueria opened its doors to controlled immigration. Those readers whose memory hasn’t been totally destroyed by their consumption of Remitroot liquor may remember that only two immigrants satisfied the qualification process. Tonto Tomás and Crazy Carmen. As their names suggest some people paddle in very shallow gene pools. They seemed perfectly suited for life in Alqueria. It would perhaps be interesting to describe these two additions to the population in some detail. Crazy Carmen is a singular lady to say the least. Whether or not the term ‘lady’ applies to Carmen is open to some debate but we will go with the biological definition until we have official confirmation. She filled in the immigration form by accident believing it to be a subscription to the
for the terminally flaky’. She has two major claims to fame. She can belch ‘A Las Barricadas’ after eight glasses of Remitroot beer and spit further that Soggy Sosima the ‘All Comers Alqueria and District Phlegm Champion’. But she has a kind heart, at least we hope she has, she definitely needs a redeeming feature. Tonto Tomás is the virtual opposite of Carmen, his spitting prowess is on a par with that of an asthmatic Drain Fly. As for belching, after two of the required eight glasses of Remitroot beer Tomás is inclined to faint. Tomás is in a perpetual state of distraction with the attention span of a confused sardine. His distraction is such that he is distracted by distraction itself and has never completed a single task in his life. Tonto Tomás and Crazy Carmen are well matched however. Carmen’s physique has little in the way of femininity and that includes breasts. Tomás however has a very confused body, all the muscles seem to be in the wrong places and his limbs don’t know the value of team work. While Carmen is flat chested, Tonto Tomás has man breasts, but this isn’t a problem as after all someone in any relationship has to have a pair of tits.
Little Cat Heaven
Mr Tommy Fluffipants has been quite successful in bending me to his will. However, there is one matter which is still under dispute – the bedroom. He considers that he should be allowed in the bedroom and on the bed whenever he fancies, but I consider that the bedroom is out of bounds for all animals at all times. I point out to him that not even the dog, nor even that loftiest and most superior of all beings, his mother, is allowed in the bedroom. The other day he found a chink in my emotional blackmail armour. I was feeling less than sparkly, more like a cold anti-cyclonic depression moving in from the Baltic, so rather than contaminate the house with my doom and gloom I took myself to bed. I must have gone to sleep, because I was awakened by a small thump on the end of the bed. I opened my eyes, and there, frozen in landing position was Tommy, his perfectly round eyes locked into mine with an expression that was the feline equivalent of ‘Ooops!’ I had neither the strength nor the inclination to turn him off, so I said ‘Hello Tommy.’ Relief flowed through every hair on his small body as he realised that he was neither invisible nor in trouble. He curled himself into a little furry ball with his back to me, on the basis that if I can’t see you, then you can’t see me. However, Tommy prefers the stretched-out posture for sleeping, so it was not long before he began to

He stretched and wriggled his way up the bed until he could reach my hand. Fixing me with a beseeching look he stretched his front paw out and pulled my hand towards him. I stroked his little soft pads (he likes that) and removed my hand. Up came his paw again, and once more my hand was pulled very gently into contact with him. I stroked his pads again, and removed my hand. After the third kidnapping of my hand I gave up. He lay, stretched out on his back, his paw wrapped around my finger, a seraphic smile on his face, purring like a well-tuned but very small motorbike. He was in Little Cat Heaven. I felt better, too!

F O K TAL N W O T E H T Tips for Dining in Spain
Blame it on Spain’s reputation for incredible highend dining, on tapas crazes abroad or any number of other things, but one fact remains, there are a lot of misconceptions out there with regard to what it’s like to eat in Spain. From the idea that Spanish people love spicy food to the assumption that paella is consumed throughout the country, people’s expectations of what they’ll find when they come to Spain are riddled with inaccuracies. In most cases, it’s easy to realign your thinking on the spot, but to give you a head start, we’ve put together a list of 10 things that are useful to have in mind before visiting. 1) Choose your table wisely Outdoor dining is incredibly common in Spain and tables are typically available on a first come, first serve basis. If you choose to sit inside, many times you will find a bar area, with or without tables, and a more formal dining space. The prices and even the menus
can vary according to where you sit, so keep an eye out for that when choosing your seat. The bar section of a restaurant is almost always self-seating while more formal dining rooms may require reservations. If there is a price difference by seating, it shouldn’t be extreme. You will either be charged a flat “service fee” for sitting outside, or there will be an extra column on the menu that lists price differences according to where you are sitting. 2) Let menus help you when deciding where to eat Especially in tourist-frequented areas, avoid casual places with menus translated into a variety of languages. If you want to get a taste for the local gastronomy, your best bets are often the places that offer menus in Spanish only. Another thing you will notice are menus with photos en lieu of translating everything. Most places with photos of dishes are geared towards tourists, locals don’t need pictures to figure out what they want to eat. Finally, keep an eye out for chalkboards, menu inserts or sandwich boards
listing a menú del día, or menú for short. A menú has a fixed price and a set of options to choose from that change daily. Menús are usually much cheaper than ordering dishes a la carte, plus they almost always come with extras like bread, drinks and dessert. 3) Don’t waste time figuring out what you want to drink Waiters will frequently ask for your drink order as soon as you are seated and before you are anywhere near ready to order your meal. It’s advisable to look at the drinks immediately and then move on to what there is to eat. Generally speaking, your options will be beer, wine, soda or water. Many restaurants serve cocktails as well, but they are rarely included as an option with a menú del día. Water in Spain is typically not free and you normally have a choice between still (sin gas) and sparkling (con gas). If you don’t want bottled water, you can ask for tap (agua del grifo) but don’t be surprised when your waiter looks at you like you’re crazy. http://partaste.com

ADOPT FOSTER SPONSOR Find your next best friend at the animal shelter K9 Club is a non-profit, animal welfare group run totally by volunteers who are dedicated to the rescuing and re-homing of abandoned animals in the Costa Blanca area. We rely totally on public donations through fundraising and our two shops, one in Almoradi and one on La Marina, all the money we raise goes towards maintaining a high level of care for our animals. We are able to run a van which not only is used for the transportation of our animals but can also be used for the collection of any items the public wish to donate for either of our shops. We would like to hear from people who have time to spare and who love DIY, especially tiling, painting and general maintenance, as well as those of you who would love to assist the Kennel Managers with tasks such as dog grooming, dog walking and cat chatting. Working with our animals is incredibly rewarding and we have many that, for one reason or another, will never be adopted. All our animals are really friendly and would love to meet you. Our animal shelter is situated in the Catral/ Crevillent/Elche Area. We are always looking for more volunteers, so if you have a few hours a week to spare, please call 610832726 for more information, we have something to suit all tastes.

Pets in Vehicles
Every year, hundreds of pets die from heat exhaustion because they are left in parked vehicles. We've heard the excuses: "Oh, it will just be a few minutes while I go into the store," or "But I cracked the windows..." These excuses don't amount to much if your pet becomes seriously ill or dies from being left in a vehicle. The temperature inside your vehicle can rise almost 20º F in just 10 minutes. In 20 minutes, it can rise almost 30º F...and the longer you wait, the higher it goes. At 60 minutes, the temperature in your vehicle can be more than 40 degrees higher than the outside temperature. Even on a 70-degree day, that's 110 degrees inside your vehicle! Your vehicle can quickly reach a temperature that puts your pet at risk of serious illness and even death, even on a day that doesn't seem hot to you. And cracking the windows makes no difference. Want numbers? An independent study showed that the interior temperature of vehicles parked in outside temperatures ranging from 72 to 96º F rose steadily as time increased. Another study

CANADIAN GRAND PRIX Two late errors by Sebastian Vettel cost Ferrari the win in a pulsating
Formula One Grand Prix in Canada as Lewis Hamilton reigned supreme for Mercedes on Sunday. The Italian car manufacturer and German were frustrated as he chased the world champion in the latter stages in Montreal. Valtteri Bottas came in third after a solid drive to claim Williams’ first podium of 2016. Formula One confirmed the result and latest championship standings: Damp conditions challenged the drivers at the start line. Vettel jumped both front-row Mercedes vehicles, performing an outstanding overtaking move as Hamilton jostled with Nico Rosberg from the green light. Former world champion Nigel Mansell was impressed by Vettel’s efforts as Formula One confirmed the early classifications, with Rosberg quickly losing position after veering off the track in the heat of the battle: The virtual safety car was deployed early in proceedings after Jenson Button saw his McLaren engine blow up. The safety car offered Vettel a tactical opportunity, and he brought his Ferrari in for a pit stop as Hamilton continued the chase. Hamilton assumed the lead after being humbled off the start line and posted a set of consistent lap times, which frustrated the chasing pack. Vettel had opted for a multiple-stop strategy as Mercedes pushed on at the front of the race. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen later copied the German’s move in the cold ambience of the day in Montreal, switching to a preferable tyre choice for the conditions. Now on softs, Vettel began to pick apart the field as he once again looked to challenge Hamilton at the summit. However, the Brit was able to react, leading from the front with
supreme speed and consistency. The former world champion once again switched tyres as he adjusted his strategy, and he made good ground in a short period, per Formula One on Twitter: Rosberg’s frustrating day continued, forced to pit with a slow puncture as his team called him in to change tyres as quickly as possible. Hamilton’s lead was cut to only 5.2 seconds from Ferrari despite the reigning champion displaying outstanding race management. Vettel was soon in his mirrors, as the German’s strategy paid dividends. The slow puncture was a blessing for Rosberg, and the championship kingpin cut through the field on fresh rubber. He quickly hunted down Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo as he pushed for optimum points after a horrendous start. Vettel made a mistake at a chicane with 13 laps remaining, as he went
flat-out in pursuit of Hamilton. The driver locked up his Ferrari and lost 1.5 seconds as he battled to keep his car in check. In the meantime, Rosberg swept past Kimi Raikkonen in the race for a podium finish. Vettel inexplicably repeated the mistake at the chicane once again, giving Hamilton extra seconds to spare with only several laps remaining in the race. In the closing stages, Rosberg chased Verstappen hard for fourth spot but made a mistake at the final chicane to spin off and finish in fifth. The chase was over for Ferrari, as Hamilton kept his nose clean and his foot on the throttle. The Brit was jubilant on the radio as he crossed the line, claiming a victory that fires his chances of yet another world championship. Rosberg remains the overall leader by nine points, but Hamilton’s Ali Shuffle on exiting his car will send shivers down his team-mate’s spine.

The Wrong Girl by Laura Wilson
www.carolnaylor.blogspot.com - www.carolesleynaylor.wordpress.com - naylorcl@hotmail.es
“Everything was in a mess. She’s been left in this horrible room because she was the wrong girl. She wasn’t good enough to be Phoebe or have a mum like Melissa. Of course she wasn’t. How could she ever have thought she was?” We can all sympathise with being in the wrong place at the wrong time can’t we? But imagine having the wrong life and being the wrong person? Does that make any sense? Once you’ve worked through the complexities of this plot with these dysfunctional characters that all seem to have fragile egos appearing to be very unstable and grossly unhappy it should make sense. This is typical of Guardian crime reviewer, Laura Wilson and this one is certainly worthy of your time. Wilson reminds us throughout that whatever actions we have taken in the past, they will always come back to haunt us. Guilt unfortunately, may define us, so how do we choose the guilt we can live with and repress it as long as we struggle through day to day living? Can we ever escape the burdens and actions of the past? Probably not. The Prologue intrigues us with a Mr Fix-it, alias mystery man, sounding dejected and suicidal. “Everything had gone wrong too many times.” Our mystery man was a roadie in the past, forty years back. He refers to a missing child and inevitably, his inability to be able to bring back the child. Sounds ominous, doesn’t it? We are also told that there is a mystery surrounding his parentage and of course, his identity. It’s what he refers to as knowing and not knowing like honesty or lying, something that alcoholics do and he should know. Mystery man was on a mission to retrace the past, to visit a man from the 60s and find out answers but he was running out of time. He also wanted to protect Molly. Molly Armitage is Suzie’s daughter. Mother, daughter and Tom had been staying at the Old Rectory in Repshall with Dan Carthy Todd. Dan was 66 when he dies suddenly. Ten year old Molly discovered his waxwork like form and this gave her nightmares that he would come back to haunt her. Suzie phones Janice, Dan’s sister who also happens to be her birth mother that she has not had contact with in over 44 years. Janice was pregnant at 19 and was persuaded by her parents to have the child adopted. Two marriages, short-lived, ending in divorce, left her financially comfortable with properties in Notting Hill Gate and Suffolk which allowed her to travel extensively and enjoy an affluent lifestyle. Janice had grown apart from Dan. He had moved back to his parents’ home in Norfolk to look after them whilst the sister enjoyed a carefree, more hedonistic type of existence and after their deaths, he remained in modest surroundings as an odd-job man, helping where help was needed. The last time Janice had seen Dan was in 2008, for Ma’s funeral. Receiving the phone call from her one and only daughter proved too much. Throughout the novel Janice constantly reflects on abandoning her child and tries to explain to a fragile, unstable Suzie how she has always been haunted by this action. The wrong action. We are told that Janice always seems to be selfcentred and controlled. Through life’s tribulations she hasn’t shed a tear and as readers, we don’t feel sympathetic towards her. Meeting her middle-aged daughter

and two grand-children overwhelms her, especially when Dan has just died and she has to arrange a funeral. Suzie carries feelings of anger and hatred towards her: “If you’d really loved me, you wouldn’t have let me go. Then how could you do it?” A difficult one to answer. Understandably, having to confront her demons turns her into a blubbering wreck. We are taken back to the swinging 60s, with rock stars and gigs and days of tripping. For Janice it was meant to be a time of sexual liberation and freedom. “Everyone got stoned.” She had a fling with Jeff and then a more serious one with Joe: “Joe was a rock star, and they were expected to take drugs and be crazy.” She called herself his ex-girlfriend or groupie believing the relationship was real: it was “something real, something that formed part of who she was.” His sister Marie had been killed at a young age and this has had a profound effect on him. “Ribbons in the Wind” was probably dedicated to his sister. Drugs ruined his career and he was kicked out from the Weather Ship where he became a recluse, suffering a breakdown and having to seek psychiatric help. His existence was Spartan compared to his glamorous days as a rock and roll star, no heroism and nothing spectacular. Tributes were still being left outside his home, close to Dan’s. Always remembered. Molly bears a striking resemblance to a projected image of Phoebe Piper, a girl who has been missing for seven years. She discovers a letter left by Dan to Joe with two photos, in his garden shed and is convinced that she is Phoebe and not Molly. She keeps a scrapbook of newspaper cuttings relating to Phoebe’s disappearance and becomes mortified when she reads that the Pipers are divorcing. “Not being able to catch up with the life you were supposed to have was a lot worse than coming last in the sack race, because if you couldn’t do that, then you’d never be able to belong anywhere.” A reference to Joe and a ribbon seemed crucial for Molly’s adopting her new life as the right girl otherwise “she’d be the wrong girl for the rest of her life and she’d never ever be happy.” She was suspicious when Janice arrived in Norfolk and would not accept her as a grandmother. Within a short space of time, Molly goes missing, leaving Suzie bereft and Janice feeling useless, at odds with the daughter she needs forgiveness from. What are they going to do? We are told about the Sneaky Man also known as the Catweazle, obsessed with Joe who lives in the woods. Mark, Suzie’s boyfriend discovers a corpse which he assumes belongs to this man. We soon discover the darker side of the swinging 60s, Magic Malc, Malcolm Devlin, who used to supply magical substances to the 60s rock scene, completely mad and dangerous. In time, Janice learns to connect the 1967 picnic scene when she was tripping with the rock band with a disappearance of another girl, Lisa Wynn. Some grisly discoveries shake Janice’s awareness of those carefree days: “freedom was an illusion, and all of it meaningless.” The story contains so many twists and turns to engage your interest throughout. Enjoy. Publisher: Quercus Publishing Ltd. ISBN: 978-1-78206-312-4.

T.M.G.S. @ La Finca 8/6/16 The forecast was for a very hot, calm day and that was just the weather! Well the scores were hotter and not so calm. In the Silver category and just back from Thailand taking 3rd place was Colin Marsden with 33 pts. Karin Alm secured 2nd place with the same score but lower handicap and in 1st place was Graham (I can’t work out the points) Smith with 35 pts. his score was confirmed by the secretary! The “HOT” scores came in the Gold category and Dave Lethaby needed 37 pts. to take 3rd place, new member Nigel Arthur took 2nd place with 38 pts. and the “hottest” score of the day went to Billy Allen who incidentally had to borrow €20 to keep his membership up to date. Of course all 3 will have new handicaps for their next game.
We had 3 visiting female Vikings this week, obviously the males were rapping and pillaging back in Sweden and Norway but the ladies put up a good fight and Ulla Pressing-Jeppsson returned 29 pts. to take the visitors prize. In the N.T.P. Competition Hole 3 Sandra Twentyman, hole 6 Joe Dean, hole 13 Karin Alm and hole 16 Dave Lethaby, Dave was also the only member to make a “2” and as the pot was rolled over from last week Dave walked away with a very “hot” €67. San Miguel Golf Society at Las Colinas. June 8th, 2016. Eclectic 3rd Round
Another large turnout for SMGS saw 45 members and 6 guests play a stableford competition, contributing the third round of this season’s Eclectic, being played over 5 visits to Las Colinas. In its usual good condition, set up relatively short but with some tricky pin positions, and blessed with superb weather scoring was likely to be pretty good, and so it proved, with some excellent returns for many from the Gold and Bronze categories. For some reason, and seemingly a trend at this course, those in Silver generally scored less well, with only Phil Birtwistle and Alan Gilbert topping 30 points. Whilst Keith Wraithmell played to his handicap in Bronze, it was Gold category players Steve Higgins, Robin Eastman and Tony Smale who excelled, scoring 38, 40 and 41 points respectively. Alan and Tony clearly like the course, having taken their category’s top prize at our last visit to Las Colinas back in February. The first of the semi-final matches was played in this season’s match play competition, with Steve Higgins making it to the final by beating Darren Hancock 3 and 2. The winner of the match between Steve Fleet and Ben Price awaits. The day’s Stableford results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 5th Rob Smyth (33), 4th Brian Mulligan (34), 3rd Keith Stevenson (35 on CB), 2nd Chris Hamblett (35 on CB) and 1st Keith Wraithmell with 36 points. Silver Category: 5th Norman Cahill (29 on CB), 4th Paul Tomlinson (29 on CB), 3rd Ken
Flaherty (30), 2nd Phil Birtwistle (33), and 1st Alan Gilbert with 34 points. Gold Category: 5th Theo Boelhouwer (35 on CB), 4th Peter Dobson (35 on CB), 3rd Steve Higgins (38), 2nd Robin Eastman (40) and 1st Tony Smale with 41 points. The Abacus was won by Derek Johnson The Best Guest prize went to Rick Cairns, pipping 2nd placed Jed Bannon on count back, both having scored 31 points. Nearest the pins (open to all) on the par 3’s went to Max Edwards (5), Peter Dobson (7), Theo Boelhouwer (10) and Darren Hancock (14 and 17). Our thanks go to the staff at Las Colinas golf course for their contribution to an enjoyable day. Next week, June 15th, SMGS will be at La Manga. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www. smgs.org or simply give Barry Roehrig a call on 966 731 033 to find out more about the society and its weekly golf get-togethers.

Lewis Hamilton dedicates Canadian Grand Prix win to Muhammad Ali
Lewis Hamilton dedicated his Canadian Grand Prix win to the late Muhammad Ali, who died recently aged 74. The Briton referenced one of the former heavyweight boxing champion's famous quotes - "float like a butterfly, sting like a bee" - on his slowing down lap. He added: "Ali was someone who inspired me so much. I'd love to be able to dedicate this to him and his family." Hamilton is now just nine points behind championship leader and Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg, who was fifth. Hamilton said he was constantly thinking of Ali - who he met a few years ago - in the last 15 laps of the race in Montreal, adding: "It was really, really weird. "I was driving and I was just thinking of him and thinking maybe he would be watching the race, I don't know." Hamilton, the defending champion, described Ali as a "unique, iconic individual who had a character unlike anyone else's". He added that he had admired Ali's confidence and charisma, as well as his ability to "outwit and outsmart his opponents". The 31-year-old also said he wanted to be like Ali when he was growing up. "Coming from a family of similar background in a sense of ethnicity, it was someone to look up to," said Hamilton. "In Formula 1, there was no-one of the same colour as us as a family, so it
was another athlete for me to look up." Sunday's win, the 45th of Hamilton's career, followed his victory in Monaco, prior to which Robserg held a 43-point lead over the triple world champion. Nico Rosberg leads the drivers’ championship by only nine points after fifth and seventh in his last two races "I feel incredibly grateful and very blessed to have had these two great weekends," said Hamilton. "I'm just going to keep working hard. As you can see, I'm super-focused. Onwards and upwards hopefully." A collision with Hamilton as they disputed the first corner behind the fast-starting Ferrari of Sebastian Vettel left Rosberg ninth on the first lap. The German said he had been angered by the situation at the time but later accepted that it had been tough but fair racing. "It was very costly for me because I lost a lot of places and from then it was an uphill battle," he said. "It was a hard manoeuvre from him but racing and I need to do a better job next time." CD MONTESINOS HAVE A NEW MANAGER
Local football club CD Montesinos have a new manager following the departure of last season’s “Mister” Roberto Cases. The club’s committee have been holding talks with a number of local managers in recent weeks and have now come to an agreement with JOSE IGNACIO CAMACHO PAVON who is known as CAMACHO in football circles. Camacho comes to the club having been in charge at Orihuela “B” last season. He will be meeting the management and squad members this coming Wednesday and is expected to lay out his plans for the forthcoming season. Camancho, born in Alamada (Malaga) on the 23rd of January 1971, played most of his football in the Spanish 2B división at clubs like Malaga “B”, UD Melilla, Hercules CF, Extremadura CF and CD Linares. He played a total of 345 matches in his career and scored 22 goals from a defensive position.
