Brit expats in Spain stunned and fearful after Brexit win
The UK voted to leave the EU in a referendum yesterday, immediately sending the value of sterling plummeting and leaving British expats in Spain stunned and concerned about their future. Britain has voted to leave the EU, by an expected margin of 52 percent to 48 percent, sending shockwaves around Europe. After it initially appeared that the “Remain” campaign was on course for victory, the results that drifted in throughout the early hours of Friday morning, proved that many opinion polls, the bookmakers and political experts had got it wrong. The result send the value of the pound crashing, recording it’s biggest drop in over 30 years. Financial forecasters believe it will tumble even further throughout the day. While the result will have major bearing on the future of Europe and on the futures of Britain’s political parties, it will also have a major impact on the lives of many Brits living throughout the EU. The fall in the value of the pound will have severely hit the value of pensions - often the only form of income
for British expats and may make it unaffordable for many to stay abroad. “I just can’t believe it, what will happen to the UK now and to our rights as Brits living and working abroad?” said Mary Reid, a primary school teacher from the Midlands living in Madrid. “One of the first things I am going to do is consult a lawyer and see where I stand on getting Spanish nationality,” said the mother-of-one. Carrie Frais, the Barcelonabased founder of MumAbroad Spain voiced the fears of many expat mothers who had chosen to bring up their children in Spain. “I am truly shocked by the outcome of the referendum. Speaking on behalf of many British mothers who have chosen Spain as their adoptive country we know how important the UK is to the livelihoods and jobs of those working in the tourism and property sector, not to mention all the other thousands of industries which have gained from British investment here,” she said. “The weakening of the pound is bound to have a significant and immediate effect and no-one can be sure of other restrictions imposed on UK investment in Spain in the future, not to mention the future of British people living and working here. It is indeed worrying times,” she said. “I am shocked at the result. Too many brexit voters are living in the past. They should be looking to the future, thinking about our children,” Lisa Sadleir who runs a relocation business in Malaga told The Local. “We won’t be directly affected here as we have been legal residents for many years. However I think many expats, who have been living here, without the

correct paperwork will be very nervous, and rightly so. “Our decision now is whether to swap our non EU British passports for Spanish ones,” she added. “I’m a little concerned about my future as resident here but US citizens and people from many other countries seem to get by so it’s probably just a fear of change,” said Simon Harris, who has lived in Catalonia for 28 years. “We have two years of negotiations before the consequences of Brexit really kick in and I’m confident that the rights of long-term residents will be borne in mind, if only because any kind of mistreatment would provoke a tit-for-tat response against Spanish citizens in the UK. “If the worst comes to worst, I might have to make an honest woman out of my long-standing partner or apply for Spanish citizenship, both of which are appealing options,” he said. “I am in total shock at the result. It’s a sad, sad day for Britain and only time will tell what the consequences of this will be,” Jane Spivey, who runs language academy Two Bird Languages, “I’m devastated by the news that my home country has voted for racism, isolation and has thrown away years of stability and peace,” said Natasha Mason of Lets Education Training. Across the south of Spain, expats were waking up to an uncertain future, with many retirees who live off a British pension realizing their spending power was instantly affected. “Expats living in Spain are now facing an uncertain future for sure,” said Maura Hillen, who in May 2015 was elected as a councillor in Albox. “I don’t think that anyone can predict what will happen next at this early stage but the most immediate impact will be volatility in the markets which will affect exchange rates and therefore the value of our spending power in Spain. story continues next page....

www.soltimes.com “We will need to wait a little longer to find out what happens in terms of access to health care, our tax status etc and I assume that UK citizens will lose the right to vote in municipal elections in Spain which means that any influence we held in our local town halls will come to an end.” One of the biggest fears was the effect the Brexit win would have on British investment in Spain “The British Chamber of Commerce in Spain is very disappointed with the outcome of the referendum, given that our members indicated an almost unanimous commitment to remaining within the EU,” Christopher Dottie, the president of the British Chamber of Commerce in Spain told The Local. “The decision to leave poses risks to the very strong British investment in Spain which has been responsible for the creation of 240.000 jobs in recent years. We hope that these risks can be minimized by the British government and European Union giving clarity as early as possible to business regarding the future trading conditions that they will face. ”The effect of the Brexit vote would be immediate, he warned, and create an uncertain future. “The strongest short-term effect on business will be related to currency fluctuations and stock market valuations. Regarding the medium and long term much will depend on the results of the years of negotiations that the United Kingdom faces and we currently have no information or precedents to indicate how they will develop.” “An uncertain future is never positive but international trade will continue, relations between Spain and the UK will continue and the path to future collaboration and prosperity will become clearer during the coming weeks and months,” Dottie added. thelocal
Spanish stock market sustains historical loss on Brexit news Spain’s risk premium rises on Friday while experts warn about the mid-term effects of Leave Acting PM Mariano Rajoy at a press conference on Friday. Acting PM Mariano Rajoy at a press conference on Friday. /Angel Diaz (EFE) The Ibex sustained the greatest losses of its entire 24-year history on Friday, when news of a Brexit victory pushed Spain’s benchmark stock market index down 12.35% at closing time. The Friday tumble breaks the prior record for daily losses, which was set in October 2008 following news of the Lehman Brothers debacle. On that day, the Ibex retreated 9.14%. Gibraltar votes to remain The vast majority of Gibraltarians voted to remain in the European Union. Remain won with 95.91% of the vote, and turnout was 83.53% among the 24,117 residents with a right to vote. The result had been widely expected. The territory’s economy benefits from EU membership while allowing for fiscal benefits. Local politicians had campaigned aggressively against a Brexit. Acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who is facing a general election this Sunday, came out to issue “a message of calm to the markets” shortly after David Cameron announced his plan to step down over the referendum results. Rajoy said that the Spanish financial system “has solid conditions” to face the market turbulence spreading across the world. He added that Spain “makes a note with sadness” of the referendum results. Meanwhile, Spain’s risk premium – the gap between Spanish and German 10-year borrowing costs – grew over 50 basis points to reach 190 points, its highest level since February 2014. Bank losses Spain’s major banks suffered serious setbacks on Friday morning, with Santander shedding 25% of its value and

Bankia losing 26% Santander has a major presence in Britain. On Friday, the Santander UK website issued a note to its clients to reassure them that “nothing has changed for Santander UK. There are no changes to the way we serve you and we won’t make any changes to our products and services as a result of the referendum without notifying you first.” Mid-term effects Experts said that in the short and mid-term, this market turbulence will hurt the pound, thus reducing British citizens’ purchasing power. This in turn could have an impact on Spanish tourism, since Britain is the first exporter of tourists to Spain. Spain’s housing market could also suffer, with fewer UK citizens investing in holiday homes on the coast. As for Spaniards living in the UK – a community of around 200,000 people – they will likely need to apply for work permits in order to legally remain on British territory. Corporate interests Spanish corporate investment in Britain (€62.1 billion in 2014) is practically twice that of British investment in Spain (€36.6 billion). The 340 Spanish companies with a British presence reported profits of €6.3 billion and provided 75,217 jobs, while the 437 British companies operating in Spain reported profits of €928 million and employed 98,019 people, according to the Secretary of State for Trade. Spanish firms in Britain include Santander, Sabadell, Ferrovial, Telefónica and Iberdrola; some of the leading British companies in Spain are Vodafone, IAG, Altadis, BP and GlaxoSmithKline. elpais

General elections: PP wins, but without a majority; PSOE beats Unidos Podemos and Ciudadanos loses eight seats
SPAIN'S general election re-run has benefited the PP, with Mariano Rajoy's party gaining 137 seats to the 123 it earned in December. Meanwhile, Unidos Podemos' confidence it would overtake the PSOE has turned out to be misplaced – working as two separate parties last time around, as United Left and Podemos, they gained two and 69 seats respectively; this time, as a joint effort, they have won 71, leaving their position unchanged. The PSOE remains the second-strongest political force with 85 seats, a drop of five on December's 90 and its worst result in history – although the PP's landslide victory in 2011, with 186 seats, wiping the floor with the PSOE and its 110, was at a time when they were the only parties in the political panorama aside from a handful of very small, regional nationalist outfits. Centre-right Ciudadanos was very disappointed with its loss of eight seats, dropping from 40 in December to 32. A total of 69.84% of eligible voters cast their ballot – slightly higher than December's 69.67%, and largely due to the 86.5% rise in postal votes, which totalled 1.3 million. Again, no single party has earned a majority, or a large enough minority to be confident of breezing straight into power – of the 350 seats in Parliament, an outright win is 176. Possible coalitions Once more, even a multiple coalition would struggle to make up the numbers – for the PP to govern, its only likely partner is Ciudadanos, giving 166 seats; for the PP to be ousted, a PSOE-Unidos Podemos coalition would gain 156. The only possible majorities that could be formed would be a left-right mega-coalition of the

PSOE and PP, giving 222 seats, but party leader Pedro Sánchez has repeatedly refused to even entertain the notion; or a combination of the PSOE, Unidos Podemos and Ciudadanos, which would give 188 seats. Sánchez attempted the latter after the December 20 elections, but after months of fruitless negotiations in which it became clear Ciudadanos and Podemos – then separate from United Left – were unable to work together, the deadline for forming a government passed and a second election had to be called. A party or coalition with a total less than the required majority can still govern if it gains a majority support in the in-house presidential elections. After December, Rajoy (PP) declined to stand, saying he would not get enough support from the other parties – this time, even if Ciudadanos voted in favour of the PP being invested, Rajoy would need to persuade the regional nationalists, the PSOE and Unidos Podemos to abstain rather than vote against him, which appears unlikely. Ciudadanos would not be likely to support a coalition between the PSOE and Unidos Podemos, or abstain to allow them to get into power – although it would probably be prepared to unite in coalition with the PSOE, this would still be way short of the numbers needed – but they may be able to persuade the smaller parties, giving them 25 votes in favour on top of their own 156 seats and votes, reaching 181. Nothing would be gained by persuading the regional nationalists to abstain, since it would then be a direct contest between Ciudadanos and the PP, and PSOE and Unidos Podemos, which the latter would lose by 10 votes. Suppor ting votes of C a t a l u ny a, B a s q u e Country and Canary I s l a n d nationalists could be key To what
extent the smaller parties would be prepared to support a combination of the PSOE and Unidos Podemos would largely hang on their attitude to a possible independence referendum in Catalunya. The PSOE is singing from the same hymn sheet at the PP and Ciudadanos in this respect, insofar as they will not allow it, or any other move which 'might break up the unity of Spain'. Unidos Podemos does not want to ban a referendum, but believes the differences Catalunya has with the rest of the country can be largely resolved by open discussion to the point where, if a referendum went ahead, most would vote against secession from the mother country. The regional nationalist parties in Catalunya are the coalition Esquerra Republicana Catalana-Catalunya Sí – Catalunya Left Republicans and 'Catalunya yes', known as ERC-CatSí, led by Oriol Junqueras and Alfred Bosch – with nine seats; and Convergència Democràtica de Catalunya (Catalunya Democratic Convergence, or CDC), let by ex-regional president Artur Mas, with eight seats. In the Basque Country, Euzko Alderdi JeltzaleaPartido Nacionalista Vasco – both of which mean 'Basque Nationalist Party' in the regional language, euskera, and in Spanish – or EAJ-PNV gained five seats, and EH-Bildu (Euskal Herria Bildu, meaning 'Reunite the Basque Country', referring to the French and Spanish Basque territories) gained two seats. The fifth nationalist party is the Canarian CoalitionCanarian Nationalist Party (CCa-PNC), with one seat. Only the Catalunya parties want their region to become independent – the Canary Islands wants more decisionmaking autonomy or to be 'less ignored' by the rest of Spain, and the attitude in the Basque Country towards secession nowadays is in the minority and largely ambivalent. This means the PSOE and Unidos Podemos, if they were able to strike a deal to govern together, would probably be able to count on eight votes from smaller regional outfits on top of their own, giving 164, but if the 17 MPs in Catalunya's pro-secession parties abstained and Ciudadanos supported the PP, the vote would fail. Once again, months of negotiations will have to take place to give Spain any chance of forming a government and a avoiding a third general election, which would be obligatory if no deal was reached by October. thinkspain

US urges EU and UK to 'divorce amicably' US Secretary of State John Kerry expressed regret Sunday that Britain has chosen to leave the European Union and vowed Washington will maintain close ties with the bloc. Kerry, who flies to Brussels and London on Monday for crisis talks with EU and British leaders, said the ideal of unity must remain paramount as Britain negotiates "Brexit". "An EU united and strong is our preference for a partner to be able to work on the important issues that face us today," Kerry told reporters during a visit to Rome. "One country has made a decision, obviously it's a decision that the United States had hoped would go the other way," he said, alongside Italian

leave Europe, a decision that triggered global economic uncertainty and fears other EU members will follow suit. But Kerry said he had no doubt that Europe would pull together and reassure the markets, noting that even without Britain the EU single market counts 455 million consumers. President Barack Obama had also made clear his concern about the referendum, and now US officials are scrambling to try to stop the political crisis harming Western unity. Kerry arrived in Rome on Sunday on a planned visit to have lunch with Gentiloni and a working dinner with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. But officials on his flight said that on Monday he would fly on to EU headquarters in Brussels to meet EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini. Mogherini had been expected to meet Kerry in Rome on Sunday, but she was busy dealing with the fallout of the dramatic vote, which stunned European and world leaders. From Brussels, Kerry will continue to London to see Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond and other officials from outgoing British Prime Minister David Cameron's government. Hammond and Kerry are expected to hold a joint news conference before Kerry leaves to return to Washington. Obama and Kerry have been at pains to insist the vaunted "special relationship" between Washington and London will survive what US
officials view as the Brexit debacle. But Washington foreign policy experts are all but unanimous in assessing that the White House will increasingly turn to core EU allies to defend its interests on the continent. Obama himself, on a visit to London last month, warned British voters that their nation would go "to the back of the queue" for a US trade deal if they voted "out." US officials are also keen to help London's divorce from Brussels go through smoothly without inflicting further damage on skittish world financial markets. But they, like many EU capitals, are also concerned not to allow Brexit to serve as an inspiration for eurosceptic forces in other members such as Italy or The Netherlands. The London visit will be the first by a senior US official since Thursday's dramatic referendum, when voters demanded Britain leave the world's richest trading bloc. Kerry's trip had originally been planned as an opportunity to meet Netanyahu and discuss regional security and the stalled IsraelPalestinian peace process. But US officials played down the chance of any concrete progress, insisting that the pair meet regularly and that no new initiative would be on the table. thelocal

draw would have escaped the attention of the two most prolif ic champions of recent years – drawn in the same half, No.1 seed Novak Djokovic could meet No.3 seed Roger Federer in the semi-f inals. First, three-time champion Djokovic will need to navigate James Ward, before a potential second-round match with another Brit, Kyle Edmund (who faces a qualif ier f irst). Seven-time titlist and three-time f inalist Federer meets Guido Pella of Argentina, before a possible meeting with Ricardas Berankis in the second round. Finalists for the past two years – Djokovic winning the 2014 title in a f ive-set thriller and pushed to four sets as he claimed his third Wimbledon in 2015 – the conclusion of the 2016 Championships, will thus deviate from a pattern of sorts. But that was far from the only intriguing fact that arose from the much-awaited draw. Serena Williams could face rematches against Heather Watson and Roberta Vinci in her quest for a seventh Ladies’ Singles title at Wimbledon.

Boiler Maintenance Tips Boiler maintenance is a must if you hope to have your boiler efficient at all times. Boilers give a vital service in hot water supply and household warming. They add to the comfort level of the home. Too often, repairs become necessary when the boiler malfunctions. Regular maintenance can help avert ceaseless repairs. This will help you save on overall costs. Maintenance is advised to avert accidents and boost household safety. Maintenance will also boost the efficiency of your boiler and extend its life span. Below are some maintenance tips.
Air Vents and Flues Blocked air vents hamper the boiler from working efficiently. This particularly applies to gas boilers. Dirt may accumulate in vents or flues and cause a blockage. It is a good idea to inspect vents and flues regularly. If any blockage has occurred, clear it to allow free passage of air.
Water Level It is vital that you check the boiler water level every fortnight or so. Should the boiler operate without water, this can easily damage it beyond repair. It can also cause an accident and endanger the lives of family members. Be sure that the pilot light is on as you check the water level. If the water level is below minimum, you need to check the plumbing and correct any faults. Sometimes, all that is required is a few minor adjustments in the set-up.
Leaks These may occur during normal usage of
the boiler. Gas or fuel may leak through the valves. This usually indicates some adjustments are necessary in the system. If you detect d a m a g e d or worn out parts, this calls for repair or replacement.
De-Scaling Hard water usually gives rise to excessive lime-scale in the boiler. This prevents the boiler from working as it should. If left to accumulate, lime-scale will hamper the heating capacity of the boiler. You will need to de-scale your boiler should you notice too much lime-scale within.
Lubrication Regular lubrication is essential for the smooth operation of most mechanical systems. Your boiler will benefit from routine lubrication, as this will support its working capacity. Be sure to lubricate boiler parts that are frequently in motion such as the fan and pumps.
Clear Dust Dust easily accumulates in the boiler room because of the boiler operations. Check the boiler room regularly and clear any dust in sight. Pay particular attention to the boiler
parts as dust accumulation will affect the system from working well. The fan often develops much dust build-up. Be sure to clear all dust to enable optimal efficiency.
Flushing It is a good idea to clear all the water from the boiler a couple of times in a year. It is best to do so after the winter when the boiler works at full capacity. Dirt, grit and lime-scale tend to accumulate in the boiler. Flush out all water from the boiler and clean the interior thoroughly. Place in some new gaskets before you refill the boiler.
Annual Check It’s a good practice to have your boiler checked at least once a year by a registered engineer. This will ensure safety and efficiency. Any emerging problems can be noted and dealt with accordingly. A safety certificate is usually issued after inspection. http://www.doityourself.com

Things You Need to Know health & beauty About Your Thyroid Tel: 950 121 936 - sales@soltimes.com Got weight gain or unexplained fatigue?
That butterfly-shaped gland in your neck may be to blame. Here's what it controls, how to tell if it's healthy and how to keep it that way.
Your thyroid Located between your voice box and collarbones and no bigger than your thumb, your thyroid affects almost every process in your body. "It produces hormones that regulate your metabolism by controlling how many calories you burn, as well as how fast or slow your brain, heart, liver, and other organs work," says endocrinologist Christian Nasr, MD, medical director of the Thyroid Center at the Cleveland Clinic. The takeaway: This little gland plays a role in everything from your mood to your periods to your bone health—even the regularity of your number twos.
How your thyroid works
Your thyroid pumps out the key hormones triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4), which are partially composed of iodine. Here’s how the gland affect your well-being, head to toe. Your heart: Thyroid hormones influence your heart rate and help control blood flow by relaxing the muscles in the walls of your blood vessels. Your fertility: Thyroid hormones influence your menstrual cycle. When they’re out of whack, you might have irregular ovulation and periods. Your bones: The rate at which old bone is broken down is driven by thyroid hormones; when that process speeds up, bone is destroyed faster than it can be replaced—which can lead to osteoporosis. Your weight: Because the thyroid regulates your
metabolism (how quickly your body burns through fuel), an overactive thyroid—or hyperthyroidism—is linked to weight loss, while hypothyroidism is linked to weight gain. Your brain: Low thyroid levels can bring on forgetfulness, difficulty concentrating, and depression. Luckily, these symptoms tend to reverse with synthetic hormone treatment. Your skin: When your thyroid is underactive, your body stops making and shedding skin cells at its normal pace. Cells build up, causing dry, dull-looking skin. Start with slender but sturdy dried plant material from your garden or a craft or florists’ supply store. 1. Select your base: a piece of plywood or wood, or a slate or terra-cotta floor tile. 2. Lay out a geometric hole pattern around the candle(s). For safety, ensure that nothing is too close to the flame. 3. Use an electric drill with a wood or masonry bit that is slightly smaller than the stems’ diameter. 4. If holes are too small, whittle stems with a craft knife. Glue in place if desired. 5. Position candle(s); votives should be in glass surrounds, but larger candles can sit directly on base. Use long-necked gas igniters to light. Here, tiny holes drilled into a slate tile make snug footings for 30-inch twigs.
window tinting benefits
There are many benefits of window tinting. In hot weather, it cuts down heat, which can reduce air conditioning expenses. In cold weather, it reflects interior heat back into the house, reducing heating costs. Along with heat reduction, window film can also help protect your curtains and furniture from the effects of the sun. To protect home furnishings, a window film will block almost 99 percent of the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Some window films offer another benefit such as shatter resistance. The film holds glass shards together and act’s as a barrier between the interior of the home and the glass. Window films can also help to reduce the glare on your television. The percentage of glare reduction is usually related to the visible light transmittance. The lower the amount of light transmitted through the film, the greater the glare reduction inside the home.
Solar Guard are specialists in the application of solar (sun) protection window film, privacy film, UV silver reflective film and tint. Professional and Legal installation of solar film and tinting to home and business.

4 stylish geometric paint patterns
Repainting a room? Be inventive with a geometric paint pattern that’s bolder than wallpaper Instead of installing wallpaper, a few years ago San Francisco artist Tim Balon painted a pattern in his hallway. Soon, friends were asking him to decorate their walls too. Trained as an architect and deeply influenced by California design from the 1950s and ’60s, Tim aims for a balance between simplicity and chaos. “I thought of the Eameses,” Tim says, “and how everything they did was modular. The idea of creating a simple form and then making variations on that theme appeals to me.” If it appeals to you too, take these tips from Tim. First, measure and draw a grid on your wall, then cut pieces of the template from a piece of chipboard. Use those pieces as guides when drawing the pattern on the wall. Start painting with the colour that will cover the largest area.

A Kodak Moment
Remember the good old days when out dining in a restaurant; someone would whip out their 35mm camera and photograph their dinner; then once the film was finished it would be sent off for processing. A few weeks later with the photos back they would then visit their friends’ houses to show them the photos of the dinner they had eaten a while back? I suspect nobody ever did the above, and other diners would have looked on agog if someone had. What we of a certain age do recall though is that sense of excitement and trepidation from using a film camera. Unless using a Kodak Polaroid camera there was no way of knowing how any picture would turn out. The finished roll was posted off in a special envelope or taken down to Boots the Chemists. Only when the fat envelope thudded onto the doormat or was picked up from the processing lab would the results be known. A commercial photographer could get a sneak preview at the lab but for us mere mortals we’d no idea what results would slide out of the envelope. Nowadays it’s all so different and the word ‘Selfie’ has made it

This week the news has been full of angry people on all sides, people complaining or resigning. So lets go completely off track and find some more light hearted news from around the world. The Lithuanian village of Ramygala held its annual beauty pageant on Sunday, the top prize going to a 16-month-old female goat called Demyte, or “Little Spot”. Around 500 people braved the summer heat to attend the parade in honour of the goat, a traditional symbol of the northern village. The pageant also included a marching band, dancers in fancy costumes and a “king” and “queen” presiding over ceremonies. It was the first time Demyte’s owner, 74-year-old retired veterinarian Ferdinandas Petkevicius, had won the competition after six years of trying. “The only thing we didn’t do to prepare the goat for the pageant is we didn’t polish its nails - because we thought of it too late,” said Petkevicius, holding the leash of the winning white goat with black spots, who was decorated with two roses on its head. Six goats decorated with flowers were paraded on a red carpet before a jury comprising the local Member of Parliament, the head of the local school and a cucumber farmer. Several contestants stubbornly refused to walk and were instead carried by their owners. Cakes, jars of honey, books and coupons for a haircut were awarded to winners’ owners, before they walked their goats away from a by-then generously stained red carpet. Met Police officer Proposes A London Metropolitan Police officer taking part in the city’s 43rd annual gay pride parade surprises his lover by getting out of the
police formation and proposing marriage to him as the crowd cheers. A 1992 Olympic gold medal stolen from champion canoeist Joe Jacobi’s car earlier this month in Atlanta was found by a 6-yearold girl and returned to him, he said on Monday. The girl spotted the medal in a wooded area while on a walk with her family on Saturday. The family contacted Jacobi through a website he established after the medal he won in the two-man canoe slalom event in Barcelona, Spain, was stolen from a nearby restaurant parking lot. The medal was missing its base when found, Jacobi said in a phone interview, but appeared mostly intact. Jacobi, 46, displays the medal in speaking events and had it with him for a television appearance in Atlanta the next day. He was inside a restaurant when three men in a Volkswagen Passat drove up and broke car windows in the parking lot, Atlanta police said. Jacobi, who lives in Tennessee, launched a social media campaign with his wife to recover the medal. Although the medal could possibly be restored to its original state, Jacobi said he may keep it the way it is as a reminder of the story behind its loss and recovery. “It’s pretty cool just as it is,” he said in a phone interview. “This is pretty awesome.” Florida man brags about burglary on Facebook, lands him in jail A Florida burglar who posted a Facebook video bragging about a $500,000 jewellery haul has landed himself and one of his accomplices in jail, police said on Thursday. into the dictionary. Oh, and some people insist on photographing their dinner. Usually there were 24 or 36 frames on a roll of 35mm film; sometimes the number reel on the camera kept going and an extra shot or two could be taken before having to hand wind the film back into its cartridge. Simple pleasures eh! In the early 70s Kodak launched its Instamatic brand using a 120 cartridge which didn’t need rewinding. Coincidentally the 120 cameras were relatively slim line, not unlike the size and shape of many mobile phones today. 120 was a hugely successful format and Kodak only stopped making the cameras in the mid-80s; then the film cartridges a couple of years ago. Smaller niche manufactures have now taken over the reins for the many camera buffs out there. Until around 2000 film cameras were the norm rather than the exception. Then as technology leapt forward the digital era stormed the world of photography. In 2003 Kodak launched the EasyShare camera; it was the first camera to have an AMOLED
display screen, the forerunner to the screens used on many phones and tablets nowadays. Kodak had conducted extensive market research discovering that women especially didn’t like the inconvenience of getting photos printed. So the camera was designed to plug straight into a Kodak printer. But, year later they stopped producing film cameras and laid off 15,000 employees. A sad end as the World’s first commercial digital camera was made by Kodak and sold under the Apple label in 1994. Even earlier in1986, the Kodak boffins created the first megapixel sensor; it was capable of taking a 7x5inch photo with its 1.4 megapixels. Even though their R&D was excellent Kodak’s bosses didn’t believe that digital would ever replace film; though their competitors did. Minolta, Sony, Nikon and Fuji were so much better at exploiting the new technology and making more stylish and importantly cheaper products! Kodak went from being a major player in the digital camera market and having 27% of the market in
1999 to filing for bankruptcy in 2012. What also didn’t help Kodak was that as this century grew up, mobiles and then tablets started to get better cameras attached. People kept the devices that did the most. I wonder what would have happened if a Kodak boffin had added a phone attachment to a camera 25 years ago. Kodak also ceased production of their Kodachrome film in 2010 which was something Kodak execs never thought would happen. Kodachrome was introduced in 1935 and was the first commercially available colour film, responsible for many of the iconic images of the 20th Century. Steve McCurry took this shot in1985 for National Geographic using Kodachrome film, it’s known simply as ‘Afghan Girl!

Homebuyers wobble in wake of Brexit vote
propert y services
Homebuyers spooked by the UK’s decision to leave the EU are pulling out of deals or attempting to renegotiate prices, according to property professionals, as the housing market suffers Brexit vote aftershocks. One property developer in central London, which had offered a “Brexit clause” allowing nervous buyers to pull out of deals in the event of a leave vote said it was allowing buyers to withdraw and keep their deposits. David Humbles, managing director of the luxury Two Fifty One development, said: “We can confirm that a few purchasers have decided not to proceed given the uncertainty of the market. However, the majority are continuing with their purchase and the marketing strategy to offer the pledge at the launch was a worthwhile exercise.” Consulting group KPMG has forecast that prices could fall by 5% outside London, and more in the capital, while commentators said a slowdown in sales which started ahead of the referendum was likely to continue. Fearful of landing in immediate negative equity, some buyers have decided to put their purchases on ice. A buying agent who specialises in finding homes for the well-off said two clients had pulled out of deals as soon as the result was known, while another had reduced their offer. “I suspect that turnover will shrink and prices will fall – by 10% perhaps by Christmas,” said Henry Pryor in a blog post. Pryor, who added that another client had exchanged contracts with a Brexit clause, meaning they could pull out if the UK voted to leave, but it was unclear whether they would invoke it. Andrew Montlake from mortgage
broker Coreco said the firm had received “an initial flurry of calls from clients wondering if they should put things on ice”, and that a small number had decided to put purchases on hold. Other agents warn that Brexit may leave the property market moribund for months. Ian Denton, director of the Jackson-Stops agency in Woburn, Bedfordshire, said: “The usual summer lull may continue through to October while we wait to appoint a new prime minister. The appetite to buy may be less, with people sitting on the fence.” However, some agents reported a pickup in interest from buyers, saying the removal of uncertainty and the falling pound were both driving demand for property. Bidwells in Cambridge, a city which has seen some of the biggest UK prices hikes of recent years, said it had sold a large house on the edge of the city for £2.25m. The vendor had invited sealed bids, to delivered on the day the result was announced, and the winning bidder had offered more than the asking price. In Midhurst, West Sussex, agent Nick Ferrier of Jackson-Stops said it agreed a sale on a home valued at £5m on Friday morning immediately after the result became apparent. Viewing requests for other properties were still “very strong”, he added. In London’s ultra-prime market, some agents were almost jubilant, saying that the pound’s steep fall against the dollar would bring international buyers to London. One market likely to see a boost is Scotland, with English buyers fleeing to a country aiming to remain in the EU. Rightmove, the property website, said that between 7am and 1pm on Friday, searches for Edinburgh homes were 250% up on Prompt and reliable service, the previous day. no job too small. However, both Rightmove and Zoopla said it was Full bathrooms or just makeovers too early to identify price and handyman service. movements in either the 24 hour call out letting or purchase markets as a result of Brexit. The latest data from the Ministry of Public Works published on the Government website, La Moncloa, indicates that the average price per square metre of urban land in Spain increased in the first quarter of 2016 by 5.3% year-onyear (compared to the first quarter of 2015), to stand at 157.7 euros, while quarter-on-quarter, the average price per square metre rose 3.9%. In the municipalities with populations of over 50,000, the average price per square metre increased by 1.4% year-on-year to stand at 308.5 euros per square metre. Within this group, the highest average prices were those in the provinces of Madrid (508.9 euros/ m2), Barcelona (397.0 euros) and the Balearic Islands (330.1 euros), while the lowest average prices were recorded in the provinces of Cantabria (105.5 euros/m2), Tarragona (111.8 euros) and Asturias (116.7 euros). The number of urban land transactions carried out in the first quarter of 2016 reached a total of 3,716, which represents an increase of 7.2% over those made in the first quarter of 2015 (3,465), but is 12.4% less than the number of transactions carried out in the fourth quarter of 2015 (4,242). According to the Ministry’s data, a total of 5.4 million square metres
of urban land was transmitted in the first quarter of 2016, amounting to a value of 724.2 million euros. Sareb, the Management Company for Assets Arising from the Banking Sector Re-organisation, also known as the ‘Bad Bank’, this week launched a sales campaign offering a selection of over 1,300 assets in the metropolitan areas of Madrid and Barcelona, which may provide some interesting investment opportunities

for potential investors. El Economista reported that this initiative, which is called ‘MAD-BCN/BCN-MAD’ and will run for a period of three months, comprises mainly new and second-hand housing. A full list of these assets can be accessed via a specific site set up for the campaign, which allows interested parties to search for a property by location, get further details of a particular property and also request additional information by email or telephone. From the website it is also possible to begin the purchase process, and get in direct contact with the platform marketing the property in order to carry out the transaction. The four servicers supporting Sareb in the marketing of these assets are: Altamira Asset Management; Haya Real Estate; Servihabitat and Solvia. According to Sareb, the properties included in the campaign make up a “very competitive” portfolio due to both their location, and their price. Madrid (with 12,921 sales) and Barcelona (with 9,313) were the provinces where there were a greater number of transactions in the first quarter of 2016, according to data from the Notarial Certification Agency (Ancert), and are key markets for Sareb business. Sareb is a private entity that was founded in order to help clean up the Spanish banking sector and, more specifically, the banks with problems due to their overexposure to the real estate sector. Its mission is to divest an asset portfolio with a value of 50,781 million euros within 15 years. kyero.com

Home Mortgage Payments Cheaper Than Renting
Due to the current economic climate in Spain, with unusually low interest rates and lower house prices, monthly mortgage payments are being found to be more affordable than the cost of renting a home, according to the latest study carried out by the financial comparison website, HelpMyCash.com, who have also developed a free calculator to help users decide which option is most appropriate for them, based on their own personal situation. The price per square metre of housing in Spain during the first quarter of the year, according to the Ministry of Public Works’ data, was 1,492.40 euros. Based on this figure, a house of 100 m2 would have an average value on the market of 149,240 euros. Based on funding of 80% and a term of 30 years, buying this type of house with a mortgage (where the average interest rate on new mortgages in April – fixed-rate and variable – was 2.09%), would necessitate a payment of 446.69 euros per month while, according to an internet comparison, the average price per square metre for rental housing in Spain is 7.13 euros. This would mean that the monthly rental cost for a 100 m2 home would be 713 euros. In Spain’s two largest cities, housing prices per square metre are among the five highest in the country. However, rental prices are also among the highest. In Madrid, the rental cost of a 100 m2 apartment is around 1,128 euros, while the selling price for a property of this size would be 253,360 euros, which would result in a monthly mortgage payment, based on the above criteria, of 758.33 euros.
In Barcelona, the difference between the rental price and the purchase price is greater. A 100 m2 house has an average monthly rent of 1,299 euros, while the purchase price would be 259,450 euros, bringing the monthly mortgage payment to 776.56 euros. However, ABC News reported that even though the monthly payments on a mortgage are much cheaper than rental costs, unlike in the years prior to the economic crisis, access to financing is much more difficult because the banks have increased the necessary requirements a potential home buyer must comply with in order to obtain mortgage financing.
BARGAINS GANGAS
Currently, to apply for a mortgage, a potential buyer must have savings sufficient to contribute 35% of the value of the home purchase, as the majority of the banks will only finance up to 80% of the property value, and so the remaining 20% plus expenses must be paid up front by the buyer. The bank also requires mortgage applicants to have permanent, long term employment, and with a monthly income of at least 2,000 euros between all mortgage title holders. In addition they must have no outstanding debts in order to be eligible to receive funding. kyero.com

Secrets of Spain:
J
Ávea the jewel of the Costa Blanca
Regarded by many as the jewel of the Costa Blanca, Jávea is a port town with an exclusive feel, set on a beautiful coastline, yet overlooked by an amazing mountain. Jávea has undeniably embraced tourism, yet in a far more classy way than some other towns on Spain’s famous Costas. Did you know that according to the World Health Organisation that Jávea has one of the healthiest climates in the whole world? Mix this in with the fact that the medical journal, the Lancet, ranked Spain as the healthiest country to live in within Europe, well if you’re looking for a good spot to holiday or even invest in, Jávea is definitely right up there! Romantic coves and beautiful beaches Think of romantic coves, beautiful beaches and wonderful scenery. Enjoy the three different aspects of Jávea – the old town, the coastline and the pretty port area. Discover a stylish tourist town, where you are entirely spoilt for choice in terms of where to go for food, drink or shopping experiences. Of course it’s not a surprise that Jávea has a healthy tourist industry, as well as a noticeable number of International residents. The Arenal Beach is the most popular with tourists,
but try not to miss out on one of Spain’s most beautiful beaches – La Granadella. It’s actually a horseshoeshaped cove, which has sapphire blue water and seagrass beds. Stroll around Jávea old town Enjoy a stroll around the narrow, medieval streets of Jávea’s old town. Tosca sandstone, whitewashed façades, Gothic windows and arched doorways are made even prettier with colourful flower pots. The landmark of the old town is undoubtedly the 14th to 16th century Church of St. Barthomolew (Iglesia de San Bartolomé), which is a fine example of Isabelline Gothic architecture. However there are a number of other interesting buildings to be seen. A pleasurable stroll in the old town will also bring you past a number of family owned traditional shops and plenty of tapas bars. Be sure to rest your legs and enjoy the ambience, over a nice cool drink, perhaps accompanied by some tapas, and just people watch and take in the scenery. Spend time in the historic pretty port area The origin of the pretty port area of Jávea can be traced back to the 15th century. Check out the narrow
streets and the old fishermen’s houses, and the avantgarde church, with a silhouette that highlights the area. Be there to wait for the fishing boats to arrive, and see the fish auction. Jávea for foodies As you enter the lands surrounding Jávea, and see the abundant fertility, and look out to the Mediterreanan Sea, it won’t surprise you to know that Jávea is also a good spot for foodies. Seafood and rice dishes feature, as do sea urchins. Fresh produce comes from the fertile valley of St. Barthomolew, and other favourite ingredients include raisins, legumes, figs, saffron and dried red peppers. I would like to mention one restaurant that we went to, where we had wonderful food and impeccable service – this is Eme & J Carlos – it’s not far from the Arenal Beach. Jávea is proud of its gastronomy and runs a number of events throughout the year such as Xábia al Plat, for 10 days in March, where delicious menus are prepared and offered at a special price. In the old town, towards the end of September the Tapas Festival takes place, and in October there’s another Tapas Festival in the port area. From the water… On land there’s many beauty spots, but don’t forget to see Jávea from the water. If you’re into scuba diving the rich sea floor is somewhere to explore the diversity and beauty of the flora and fauna. There are 10 routes that are included in a small guide on offer at the Tourism offices. Alternatively there are sea excursions which are on most of the year that take visitors out to the sea and off to see nearby towns. You can also hire boats, kayaks and jet skis.

24 Voting day incidents: Polling station worker goes into labour; another fails to turn up due to being arrested in Gaza
FEW election days pass by without a handful of anecdotes, and one of the first came from a voting station in the Nazaret district of Valencia city where a woman on polling booth duty suddenly went into labour just as she was opening up for the first ballots of the day. She had to be rushed to Valencia's Hospital Clínico to give birth – and a substitute would have had to have been found at the last minute. At another polling station, the head of a ballot box table did not turn up, but his children did – to tell the others that their father had been arrested in in the Gaza strip. Also in Valencia, the head of a polling

booth died two days before the elections and his stand-in had to be called in – but she is a student working on civil service exams, which is practically a full-time job, and refused as she 'needed to revise'. In the land-locked western region of Extremadura, in the town of Plasencia (Cáceres province), one man on polling duty was ordered to change his clothing as he was wearing a Spanish football shirt in the Republican flag colours – a protest against the monarchy. to be attended to by first-aiders. Another man attending a polling table Also in Extremadura, this time in the city in Valdefuentes, also in the province of of Badajoz, a polling station opened with Cáceres, forced the voting process to fewer than the requisite table monitors, stop when he passed out cold and had because two of them have not turned up – something they could be fined
Voting day has not been without tragedy, either – a 92-yearold man suffered a fatal heart attack just seconds after depositing his ballot paper at the Ortega y Gasset polling station on Madrid's C/ Ourenses, and in Santa Coloma de Farners (Girona province), a man of 79, known to have pre-existing heart problems, collapsed and lost consciousness. He was just about to put his voting slip in the box when he passed out, and was found to have no pulse or breathing. Paramedics on duty gave him CPR, but were unable to revive him. thinkspain
‘British refugees welcome’ in Spain following Brexit
Big changes to the Big Players! Property portals make the move to “Realtime” Trends suggest that the Spanish property market is once again set to boom and traditional “high street” agents can often feel threatened by the huge increase of online agents. However, providing that agents have an up-to-date website and property management system, equipped with the relevant tools for integration, agents can thrive and get the benefits from both being on the high street and being digitally savvy online. Portals are a vital tool in the highly competitive property market and are mentioned regularly in the media and the property news outlets. From the ongoing battle between Rightmove, Zoopla and OnTheMarket to the high costs of these portals to the estate agents themselves. According to the online news site ‘This is money’, the average cost per month incurred by each UK estate agents branch is an estimated £637 from Rightmove and £311 from Zoopla. What isn’t reported however, are the benefits to agents of using the “Realtime integration service” provided by some of the portals. A shift away from XML based feeds is actually happening now and will soon be obsolete. The big portals such as Rightmove and Zoopla offer Realtime updates for any changes you make to your properties if your management system / website is compatible. Updating properties in Real-time can ensure your listing achieves the maximum potential of views to help you secure a sale. Another key benefit of Realtime integration is that you can manage one set of property details and take advantage of the other services that portals offer like additional features, property status and video tours to mention just a few. Centralised management can save you valuable time that will enable you to focus on selling those properties listed on the portals and to maximise your ROI. After all it is an expensive business using the big portals. PropertyNow are an approved Rightmove integration partner and provide a unique system that can be tailored to meet your requirements. We’ve built business tools to automate processes that would normally require hours of work to complete. You’ll be amazed how much time you can save by owning a system that works for you. AMID the flood of Brits with Irish roots seeking passports for the Emerald Isle, and Scotland seriously considering a second independence referendum after the ‘Brexit’ vote won by 51.9%, Spain may well offer ‘asylum’ to UK nationals seeking to flee their non-EU island, if a recent Twitter post is anything to go by. The oft-published photo of the Cibeles Palace in central Madrid bearing the sign ‘Refugees welcome’, showing Spain’s willingness to take in war victims escaping the Middle East, has been doctored by Twitter user ‘Camilo en Madrid’, and reposted to read ‘British refugees welcome’. It has already been retweeted 229 times and ‘liked’ by 211, and a number of Brits have replied, saying they are ‘on their way’. Developments since the referendum result produced a vote for Britain to leave the EU have been fast – a petition for a second referendum needed only 100,000 signatures to be debated in the House of Commons, and is now at well over 3.3 million, whilst it has since come to light that the result will not become binding unless and until it is agreed by a majority in Parliament. A subdued-looking Boris Johnson and Michael Gove looked far from thrilled at their victory when appearing before the press the morning after, and have ‘assured’ there is ‘no rush’ to invoke Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty to start the exit process. ‘Leave’ campaigners have been forced to admit immigration from EU member States is unlikely to reduce even as a result of the Brexit, and UKIP leader Nigel Farage – who was not part of the official ‘Leave’ campaign but one of the most staunch supporters of a Brexit under the slogan ‘Grassroots Out’ – has admitted the UK will not be able to spend its 350 million pounds a week EU membership fee on the NHS. This has led to an uprising among some ‘Leave’ voters, who backed a Brexit mostly because they were told it would reduce immigration and because they thought the money saved would go to the health service. And with the flaws in the two campaigns now exposed, it is becoming more and more clear that the public were often unsure of what they were voting for, whether they chose to remain in the EU or leave it. One woman, when questioned, said she had voted ‘Out’ in the referendum ‘because of the bedroom tax’ imposed by David Cameron, the outgoing Conservative prime minister. A Welsh village – Ebbw Valley - which has benefited from major EU funding and has zero immigration voted overwhelmingly to leave ‘because immigration is too high’. Harry Potter author J K Rowling has said she believes the ‘Out’ vote was largely one of frustration and protest against national leaders rather than any real issues the voters had with the EU. thinkspain

The Riverside Holiday Village, Alqueria (Part one) The decision had been taken to build effects, but the cost proved prohibitive.
the Holiday Village east of the Río Verde. The natural barrier afforded by the River would separate Alqueria from the holiday makers. Rodriguez sensing money to be made wanted the lion’s share of the new venture. He put his full weight behind the project and raised the necessary capital. The sale of eighty hectares of land to a Middle-Eastern gentleman financed the project. The land measured two hundred and seventy kilometres long and three metres wide. It was the disused Alqueria to Valencia railway line. The line became uneconomical ten years ago. This was chiefly due to the trains arriving at Alqueria always being empty and those leaving suffering considerable delay while they were thoroughly searched for illicit Remitroot liquor. The ownership of the land, already in dispute became further confused when Rodriquez sold it without the slightest claim to title.
The land to the east of the River was wet, swampy and unfit for human habitation. This was a worry but as they were to target British tourists it was thought they would feel at home there. The Río Verde itself is a stagnant green soup, with strange genetically altered fish and villainous looking amphibians blundering around in its murky depths. The risk of infection is always prevalent if one enters the water and clothing has been known to disintegrate on contact with the it. A plan had been hatched to introduce antibiotics into the food to counter the worst of the River’s
Rodriquez bought twenty prefabricated buildings from the now defunct Ispravitelnotrudovoi lager in Siberia, which he sold to the project at an exorbitant price. The Building Committee did question the suitability of ex-Siberian prison buildings, however the assembly instructions caused more of a concern. Written in Russian, the hieroglyphics meant nothing to the insular Alquerians . When completed instead of resembling the supplied illustrations they took the shape of fanciful Disneyland type structures with no two alike. They would not have disgraced Goudí himself. Staffing the resort was easy. Unemployed from Alqueria, of which there are many, would be trained and given a smattering of English. Unfortunately the only person in the village with grasp of English is Blythe Gruntmore and as a Geordie this grasp is somewhat tenuous, his Spanish is also abysmal. Many happy, hilarious and alcohol soaked nights passed as Blythe passed on his linguistic gems. The sound of an Alquerian Spaniard trying to say “ Welcome te wor village the booza is tha wa bonny lad“ is a wonder to behold. In these troubled times it is indeed a bold venture. Alquerians have always been given to bold gestures, stupid ones but bold none the less. We can only see how the first inmates, or rather guests react to the resort.
The Revenge of the Hosepipe
Hosepipes are a malicious breed; the aim of every hosepipe is to infuriate and thwart the human race at every opportunity. Here are a few of their better-known evasions: Firstly, it does not matter how assiduously I drain the water from it, or how carefully I roll it up, when I pick up the business end it will spit on me with the venom of an enraged llama, preferably on my feet. The trick here is to grasp it firmly by the neck and never, ever let go. I roll it up with all its coils tidily arranged, yet when I unroll it some of the coils will burrow under others, so that it creates a kind of cat’s cradle. This doesn’t pull free, it just knots, so to get it untangled I have to engage in a sort of horticultural Twister most inappropriate for a lady of my maturity and gravitas without letting go of the beast’s neck. Then it has to be stretched out straight. Here it will locate each and every unlevelness in the garden surface, and catch on it. I’ll be walking along with a vicelike grip on the hose’s throat, when it will bring me up short with ‘Can’t go any further, I’m stuck.’ I look round, and see a miniscule pebble sticking up half a millimetre proud of the ground, and over which the hosepipe cannot possible go! However, its chief delight is to kink. There is nothing a hosepipe enjoys more than a good kink! The

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk first I know about this is an abrupt cessation of the water supply at the business end, accompanied by an apoplectic hissing at the tap end. If it achieves a kink once, it will forever after spontaneously kink in the same place each and every time I use it! But the height of its insubordination is reached when I put my trust in it. I place it carefully at the base of a plant, so that I can walk away and do something else while leaving it to do its job unsupervised. It sits there, all sweet compliance and life-giving liquid; it waits until I walk away, then with the grace and innocence of the truly evil it will arch its neck around so that its spray is directed onto the gravel, leaving the poor starving plant desperately gasping at its side. And each and every time I return to redirect it, it will get me! Without fail!

DIRECTIONS Place the potatoes, cauliflower, carrots and parsnips into a large saucepan and cover with cold water by 2 inches. Bring the water to a simmer, salt it generously and cook the vegetables until just tender, about 10 minutes. Drain well, shaking off as much moisture as possible, and then transfer to a large bowl with the butter. Season with salt and pepper and roughly mash, leaving lots of large, coarse chunks. Meanwhile, cook the bacon in a large heavy-bottomed skillet over medium heat until brown and crisp, about 8 minutes. Transfer to the bowl with the vegetables using a slotted spoon, leaving as much bacon fat in the skillet as you can. Cook the Brussels sprouts in the same skillet over medium heat until wilted and tender, about 5 minutes, and then transfer to the bowl of vegetables. Mix well and divide the vegetables and bacon into 6 even patties. Refrigerate until ready to cook. Heat 2 tablespoons of the oil in a medium skillet over medium heat. Cook the patties in batches until the bottoms turn golden brown, 4 to 5 minutes, and then flip and cook until the second sides are crisp and golden brown, another 4 to 5 minutes. Transfer to a platter. Heat 1 tablespoon of the oil in a large non-stick skillet over medium heat. Crack 3 of the eggs into the pan, sprinkle with salt and pepper and cook until the whites are set. Place 1 egg on top of each bubble and squeak cake. Fry the remaining eggs and place on the remaining cakes, and then serve topped with the chives.

F O K TAL N W O T E H T Toledo Gets Guinness Record for Largest Plate of Ham Spanish City Carves its Way to Gastronomic Victory. The city of Toledo took home the Guinness Record for the world’s largest plate of hand-carved ham at a multitudinous event in the city center last weekend. This achievement, which took place in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento (City Hall Plaza) of this, the 2016 Spanish Gastronomy Capital, was no easy feat. In total, it involved 76 professional ham carvers from all over Spain, cutting 112 hams made by Industrias Cárnicas Tello and certified by the Consorcio del Jamón Serrano Español (Spanish Serrano Ham Consortium). This produced a total of 392 kilos (864.2 pounds) of sliced Spanish ham, which covered a 140
square meter plate. At the end of the day, this effort in the historic town of To l e d o (Castile-La M a n c h a) surpassed t h e previously held record by 92 kilos, feeding both the excitement and stomachs of hundreds of onlookers who were able to buy portions of the winning ham for
the symbolic price of one euro apiece. The proceeds from these sales were donated to various food banks and other non-profit organizations. http://www.foodswinesfromspain. com

Liam and his brothers and sister were left at APAH's kennel gates when they were only days old. After a lot of hard work hand rearing them, they are now 3 months old and ready to be adopted into loving homes. They should be medium sized dogs, approximately 15 - 20kgs in weight. To arrange to meet the little family, please call

We would like to introduce you to Chiquita (brown chihuahua approx. 8 years old, Capitan (white male chihuahua) approx. 2 years old and Lola (maltese cross), her mother being Chiquita, approx. 20 months old. Ideally we would like them all to go together, but K9 realises this is a lot to ask. All three little dogs were well looked after, and have been used to living indoors but given time would adjust to both types of environments.

things you need to know about taking them on holidays with you. Border control EU pet passport rules apply throughout the European Union and it is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct documentation for your pet. The ISPCA stresses the importance of ensuring your pet is wearing a collar, an ID tag and is micro-chipped also giving the temporary address in the event he/she gets lost so they you can be reunited as quickly as possible. Animals will have to be vaccinated against rabies and specific tapeworm treatment for dogs is often required. With regard to quarantine, countries are split into three different categories with rules for travel to
and from the various categories. This website has a great breakdown of which countries require an animal be quarantined and which ones don’t so make sure you check that out before booking your trip. Air travel Airlines all have different rules on pet travel so you should always check this on their website before booking flights. Ryanair, for example, does not carry animals on flights except for guide dogs and even then, only on certain routes. If your pets have a fear of flying, you can always travel by boat and this may be a more comfortable and less stressful way for your pet to travel as they can be kept in the car or in on-board kennels on ferries. http://www.thejournal.ie

motoring N332 - Driving In Spain
Advice and information about driving in Spain.
Beware of Fire Risks
Spain is currently on a heightened alert status for the risk of forest fires, a devastating phenomenon that can take lives, livelihoods and homes, and a situation which is usually caused by simple neglect. In Spain, it is estimated that more than 80% of all forest fires are caused by human interaction. In America incidentally the figure is as many as 90%. 233 High Risks of Forest Fires 0 Whereas some of those fires are started deliberately, and the reason for those fires is usually down to the individual concerned, the vast majority are caused by accidental ignition, but accidents can be prevented. The heightened state runs through to the end of October, although there is always the possibility of an extension depending on the weather, and it is a time when everybody is asked to be both alert and vigilant to the risks that any one of us can pose on a regular basis. According to the Ministry of Environment, Rural and Marine Affairs, of the 21,000 forest fires in Spain last year, 3% were caused by a cigarette butt thrown from a vehicle. Despite the decline in the number of smokers and the public awareness of the risks of fire, it still remains one of the gravest dangers to forests and fields. It is not only cigarettes however, even litter can pose a risk of fire if discarded by the roadside. In the searing heat of summer it is possible for paper based products to become so hot that the combust, glass can have a magnifying effect and can instantly cause a flame to ignite as the sun´s rays are amplified through it. It is for that reason that throwing any object from a vehicle is considered such a serious offence. You can be fined 200 euro for doing so and lose 4 points off your license. Become a continual offender and your licence can be withdrawn, as is the case for any road traffic offence of course. The vehicle itself also poses a risk of fire. As the engine and motor
components heat up whilst driving they too become a potential threat. A hot exhaust pipe catching against dry and arid shrubbery for example could quickly become an inferno. We have spoken before about the “fire triangle” or “combustion triangle”, a simple model for understanding the necessary ingredients for most fires, but it is also important to remind ourselves so we can fully understand the risk of fire. The triangle illustrates the three elements a fire needs to ignite: heat, fuel, and an oxidizing agent (usually oxygen). It´s sometimes simplified into the elements of heat, something to burn and oxygen. The removal of any one of the three elements of the triangle means that fire cannot take place. Oxygen is present in the air, so there is not a lot we can do about removing that risk. Similarly, there is little that can be done to remove the fuel of forest fires, the dry trees and shrubbery themselves, but there is something we can do about the heat source, the ignition. Taking all your rubbish home and depositing it in a safe place is one easy task. You probably remember old TV public service announcements about how glass can start a fire, but any litter can be a contributing factor to fire. Burning embers from summer BBQ´s are a common source of ignition, so these too must be disposed of correctly. It is important therefore to only park your vehicle in authorised and official parking places, and to heed the road signs along the way. If you do smoke, make sure that you dispose of all of your smoking materials safely and correctly, not just on the ground. There are a variety of processes implemented to try to reduce the risk of fire, including a ban during the hottest months on farmers and industrial locations starting controlled fires. If you do spot a fire, or smoke which could soon become a major problem, please contact the 112 emergency centres as soon as possible, where
Over a Million Vehicles have Defective Tyres
Throughout June we have been focussing on tyre safety and the importance of checking your tyres on a regular basis. However, as well as the regular checks, it is always crucial to do additional checks before and after long journeys, which is why the focus has been during the month leading up to the summer holidays. Over a Million Vehicles have Defective Tyres Tyres are amongst the most important elements of a vehicle, and the most abused at times, and their quality can quite literally mean the difference between life and death. However, despite all of the risks and the importance put on tyre safety, it is still anticipated that more than a million vehicles are on the roads of Spain alone with defective tyres. The Royal Automobile Club of Spain (RACE) in collaboration with GOODYEAR recently performed more than 380,330 technical inspections of vehicles and ITV stations throughout
operators are able to speak a variety of languages, including English. If you do speak Spanish and the fire is by the roadside you can also contact the Guardia Civil emergency number on 062. Remember though, before you call, make sure you find out your exact location through street signs, road markers or major landmarks. Incidentally, the DGT are also supporting the campaign at the
Spain. Of the 380,330 inspections in 14,744 cases they found tyres with very serious defects. Using that figure as a benchmark, the figure would relate to almost 4% of all of the vehicles on the roads of Spain, some 1.1 million vehicles, the majority of which are passenger cars. However, proportionally, light vans have a higher percentage of vehicles with a total of 4.8% of all vans on the roads having serious defects. The most common defects found on the tyres checked were related to good tyre maintenance, normally because of excessive or uneven wear. We have looked at checking tyres already and we will offer more advice again, but the figures highlight the need to perform regular checks. For their part, GOODYEAR have produced 100,000 information leaflets which are being distributed through ITV centres and maintenance workshops offering further advice.
moment and have shared a number of educational videos published in the 60´s and 70´s by the forestry directorate. Some of these videos are available on the website and although they may be in Spanish, rather old fashioned looking, and not quite the polished presentation of a Hollywood blockbuster, their message is quite clear.
Aston hypercar two weeks from unveiling Red Bull Aston joint-venture hypercar set for July 5 debut
Aston Martin will unveil its AMRB01 hypercar in two weeks.
Set to be unveiled at the company’s Gaydon HQ on July 5, the hypercar is the product of a joint venture between the storied British sports-car marque and Red Bull’s racing operation. Indeed, Red Bull F1 designer Adrian Newey is the driving force behind the design of the car. The AMRB01 was officially confirmed at the Melbourne F1 Grand Prix in March. Although it was hinted that the car would debut at this weekend’s Goodwood Festival of Speed (Britain’s de facto motor show), the car will now have its own ‘show’ as detailed above. Early this year, Aston Martin boss Andy Palmer told motoring.com.au that planning for the car began in early 2015. The funding for the project was secured as part of the Brit brand’s ‘Second Century’ six-year production and marketing plan. Palmer also confirmed AMRB01 would be built in right- and left-hand drive and homologated under low volume type approvals around the world. Aston Martin will build “less than 100” of the cars and no official price has been announced. LOS DOLSES S.L Speculation has placed price tags as high as $5.0m on the car. The car is expected to be powered by a version of BEST Aston’s new V12 which, in standard form, entered production this week. Film Review
The Two Faces of January
www.carolnaylor.blogspot.com - www.carolesleynaylor.wordpress.com - naylorcl@hotmail.es
“Truth is we’re joined at the hips. I get caught, I take you down. You get caught, you turn me in.” If you’re a fan of Hitchcock or Patricia Highsmith and love psychological thrillers, this film is for you. I’m sure you’re familiar with the Ripley books by Highsmith so you’ll find similar underlying themes with fraudsters, murders and of course, men on the run! For well-known screenwriter Hossein Amini, this was to prove a successful directorial debut joining the prolific ranks of Clement, Hitchcock and Minghella, reminding us of the thrill and tension, on the edge of your seat tension that is characteristic of this genre. Where Amini excels is in conveying subtle and unspoken tension particularly with the Alpha males sparring over Colette. The cold-hearted stares and the grimaces will give you the creeps followed by the profanities and the scuffles. The title of the film alludes to the two faces of Janus, the Roman God, one face looking to the future, the other to the past. We are told about the mythical tale of Theseus and the minotaur from the two main characters who seem to be on a sight-seeing tour of the Acropolis in Athens, laying early foundations of a tragedy in the making. The third character is a tourist guide and he relishes the opportunity to tell some besotted female tourists about this tragic story. Chester Macfarland is played by Viggo Mortensen of Lord of the Rings fame. Remember Aragorn with the long hair? Mortensen has been described by critic Odie Henderson as “dangerously sexy and morally dubious.” He is a 42 year old wealthy American financier who seems to have recently wedded wife number 2-another glamorous and beautiful blonde, 25 but relatively poor, played by Kirsten Dunst. (Interview with the Vampire, Spiderman 1 and 2.) Chester reads from a tourist guide, the mood seems happy and the couple are relaxed as they stroll around the Acropolis as if they didn’t have a care in the world. But looks can be deceptive, can’t they? Rydal Keener, a Greek speaking American, who majored in Economics from Yale played by hunky Oscar Isaac (

Guerilla, the t.v. series Law and Order and Body of Lies) is a tourist guide and a poet. He is interested in Chester because he reminds him of his late father although he is more interested in Colette as a sexual playmate. Rydal flirts with the young female tourists, in particular Lauren van Buren who is meant to be related to the 8th President and then takes advantage of them by scamming them, something that Chester seems aware of. Colette tells her husband that she likes Rydal and there are hints of her promiscuity further afield. Chester is insanely jealous and once he starts knocking back the whisky he becomes a dangerous man. Colette assures Chester that her interest in Rydal is non-sexual, however no-one believes her! Once you feel the chemistry between the two you’ll understand what I mean. Things come to a head when a private detective finally catches up with Chester. “I thought you said no-one would follow us?” asks Colette, alarmed when a strange man storms into their hotel room whilst indulging in some horse-play. We learn that Chester has been mixed up with Canadian oil shares. “He sold them shares in an oil field that didn’t exist. Them and hundreds of other people.” So, pay-back time it is! “You reimburse my clients, I’ll go back home to my family and leave your lovely wife and you alone.” Fair enough. This is when we start to realise the truth about Chester MacFarland and why he is on the run and unable to return to the States with his young wife. Chester wants to cut a deal before a scuffle breaks out-the first of many. Rydal makes an appearance at an inopportune moment and unwittingly become an accomplice to a crime, jeopardising what is left of his shaky integrity and compromising his position completely. In Chester’s own words he refers to him as a “right criminal.” From then onwards we know that things can only get worse. Avoiding arrest is the name of the game. The backdrop of Athens, Crete and Istanbul, Turkey add to the charm of this thriller, a good script and first-class acting. Does anyone survive or do they all go down? Find out.

Club de Golf El Paraíso LV 39 @Lo Romero 17/6/16
Almost 20 members and guests turned up at Lo Romero on a perfect day for golf. Our guests were mainly from Sweden which included a few youngsters. A young man (17 years old) who goes by the name of Viggo told me that his idol is Henrik Stenson; well he likes to play like Stenson, 3 wood of every tee and 200+ meters long although he was not always in the fairway, a little more practise Viggo! The scores were excellent with almost every player making 30 points or more but it needed 37 points from Benedicte Kruse to take 3rd place on higher handicap from Cecilia Kinnerfelt playing also with 37 points but playing with handicap 10. 1st place went to one of the nicest guys that
you could wish to meet, 86 years young, Tom Jones with 39 points. The N.T.P. Competition was really a single player affair, Benedicte Kruse took the bottles of rioja on holes, 5, 12 and 15 which left Joe Dean nearest on hole 7. The young man whom I mentioned early did manage a Stenson like put on hole 12 (20m +) to take the €18 that was in the “2’s” pot. Photo; competition winners. Every time that we visit this course they seem to be making improvements to it, and for the better I might add. This visits surprise was that work was being carried out on the par3 3rd. so the clever guys at Alenda decided to use one of the holes on their “academy course” that conveniently runs alongside the 3rd. what a fantastic challenge it made! Approximately the same length and very pleasing on the eye, some member’s commenting on it had said that it’s a pity that it isn’t a fixture on the course. The rest of the course was, as always in great condition and as you will see from the results that this is a firm favourite with our members. Results for the N.T.P. Competition; Hole 3 Joe Dean, hole 5 Mick Kennedy, hole 13 nada, hole 16 Colin Marsden. Our best guest was from Iceland, Henrik Bjarnason who scored 27 pts. Their first game was a local derby as they were drawn against La Manga and they came away triumphant with a 5-2 win. They then brushed aside three of the UK teams with empathetic wins leaving them just Copenhagen to play in their qualifying group. This was a much tougher game and despite some good netball they lost which meant they came second in their group due to goal difference. On to the knockout stage and Rojales were really up against it with tough opposition from the West Midlands. They were 3-0 down at half time but with fighting spirit managed to pull it back

So come a long and join the rugby revolution with this new rugby club from the start and be part of something new in the area. All ages, gender and nationalities are welcome, from beginners to experienced players, the more the merrier, as we are based on the true traditional ethics of the sport. So come along and join the newest rugby club on the Costa Blanca. Also team bonding after training in the nearest bar for a drink and chat, just how rugby should be. For more information about the club contact myself, Dutch, on 692 767 242. Also I am down at Zoco market on Sunday from 09.00-13.30, so come on down and find more out about the club and rugby in the area. Also for all of your rugby branded clothing and gear including Canterbury casuals, Cotton Traders, club and international shirts.
Last Race Day of the SAMM Spring Series 2016
Sunday June 19th marked the last race day of what has been a memorable SAMM Spring Season. With six members of the Balaton Group and the regular crew of the Catamaran away, only four Shoestring Group boats competed. Dos (Stormin’ Norman and Mike Bates); Tres (Tug Wilson, Pat Fleck); Cuatro (Jack Moss, Di Hardwick and ?) and the RS Quba (John Down). Today was John’s first race outing in his new single hander and he did exceptionally well getting to grips with his new toy. Some tweaking is needed to get the best out of the dinghy and no doubt John has a list of adjustments to work on. CTD was extremely busy with hundreds of revellers enjoying a day out on the Mar Menor and, although it is great for the kids, our crews wished the jet-skiers would take a more care and show some courtesy for others. The first race started in calm conditions and, apart from being drenched by spray from the jet-skiers, was fairly uneventful. The four laps were completed in 30 minutes and it was decided to increase the distance
between the buoys for the second as the wind was beginning to pick up. Eve r y b o d y had a good start and Cuatro and RS Quba were neck and neck for much of the race. All was going well until the 2nd lap when Dos capsized on the downward leg and retired. The RS Quba and Cuatro continued to battle it out as Tres gained on them inch by inch. The increased wind speed made for an exciting race which was over in 1 hour. Results:- Race 1: Tres, Cuatro, Dos, RS Quba. Race 2: Tres, Cuatro, RS Quba. SAMM racing starts again in September.
