After increased demands from residents and local taxi drivers the Community Association “San Miguel Arcángel” has requested for an increase in the number of taxi licenses issued. It follows a similar demand made last year by 60 commercial establishments and taxi workers who say that the current service is insufficient. According to the 2015 register, San Miguel has only 2 taxi licenses to serve a population of 6,776 inhabitants. The average allocation of taxi licenses in Spain, according to INE statistics, is 15.4 taxis per ten thousand inhabitants which studies show to be the optimum number for drivers to achieve profitability. Neighbouring Orihuela Costa also has a ongoing issue with low number of taxis in the area especially during the peak summer months.

Spain has worst snow in 35 years
NEWS Gas Hike during freeze
Possible action
Brits who headed to Europe last week in search of some winter sun were in for a nasty surprise as a snow storm swept across the continent and Spain experienced its heaviest snowfall in 35 years. The usually sundrenched holiday destinations in Germany, Croatia, Italy, Corsica and Serbia are all feeling the
chill thanks to the freak cold snap. Beaches at numerous coastal resorts - where tourists flock to escape the British weather - have been wiped out by freak snow storms. Schools on the Costa Blanca, home to popular resorts including Torrevieja, Alicante, and Benidorm, were closed
this morning because of the heavy snow that had fallen overnight. The snow is the heaviest that has been seen in Alicante since 1983. Picture shows a snowcovered beach on the Costa Blanca. Areas of southern Valencia and northern Alicante saw up to 25cm of snow in 24 hours.

State Platform for Public School, composed of parents, unions and students, has already proposed the call for strike general in the education sector on March 9, a fact that from the provincial collective will move its members to join the proposal. The group is misleading the process yet to start towards an educational pact and add their discomfort to the recent agreement of the Council of Ministers, whereby the Government will go to the Constitutional Court to “try to annul” the agreement of the
Congress of Deputies Which seeks to paralyze the LOMCE. “The conclusion is that the current G o v e r n m e n t considers that the legislative power should be subordinated to the Executive and that sovereignty does not reside in the people, but is the exclusive property of that Government, deliberately ignoring what is established in Article 1 of the Constitution Spanish, “the platform said in a statement. The last general strike convened by the group was almost four years ago, in May 2013.
The price of a bottle of butane gas went up by 5% last week. The increase comes as Spain had some severe cold weather in the past week, with the amount of gas being consumed increasing due to the plunging temperatures. The new price approved by the Ministry of Industry is €12.89. With this new increase, butane prices have increased bimonthly since July last year, and now costs 14.5% more than it did in July.

Putin, NEWS Rajoy’s messages of support
January 2017
King wishes to promote tourism in Egypt
Russian President Vladimir Putin and Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy have sent messages to Premier Paolo Gentiloni, with dozens feared dead after a mountain hotel in Abruzzo was hit by an avalanche. “I express my profound condolences for the death of the people due to the avalanche in Abruzzo,” read the telegram sent by Putin, Tass reported. “I ask you to pass on my words of sincere compassion to the relatives and lovedones of the dead. May courage not abandon them in this difficult moment”. Rajoy said was “moved” and offered “any help” Gentiloni considered useful.
King Felipe VI wishes to visit Egypt to promote tourism here and show that it is a safe country, according to the new Spanish Consul General to Alexandria Juan Lopez. Lopez added that the
media tends to focus on accidents and crisis without highlighting the positive issues. During a meeting with Alexandria Governor Reda Farahat, they agreed on reviving the
cooperation between Alexandria and Barcelona in order to boost bilateral cooperation in all fields. Meanwhile, Farahat offered felicitations to Lopez over his new post and wished him success.
Samsung S8 delay
The chief of Samsung’s mobile division, Koh Dongjin, confirmed on Monday that the company would not unveil the Galaxy S8 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, which starts Feb. 27. Koh did not share any information about a future launch date. Although MWC was never officially confirmed as the
launch date for the Galaxy S8, many of its predecessors — including the S7, S6 and S5 — were launched at the annual event. The delay is likely due to the numerous cases of the Galaxy Note7 overheating and bursting into flames, which caused Samsung to pull the device from the market

Even though there was zero increase in the installed wind power in 2015, wind power still remained the third source of electricity generation in Spain. Iberdrola is one of the biggest producers of wind energy in Spain, along with Acciona. In 2014, wind power accounted for over 20% of the total electricity generated in Spain. Spain has arrested a 32-year-old Russian computer programmer at Barcelona airport who is alleged to have designed and used software to steal bank account details from banks and individuals, Spanish police said. Working with the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the man, named Lisov, was arrested by Spanish police on Jan. 13 as he waited to take a flight to another European country. He is suspected of leading a financial fraud network, the police said in a statement. Lisov, wanted by the United States under an international arrest warrant, had been under observation by authorities for several days in the northeastern region of Catalonia, police said.

OUR CHOICE Spy In The Wild - Friendship Ep 3/5 Thursday 26 January 8.00pm-9.00pm BBC ONE For animals to survive and prosper they often have to rely upon others for a huge range of activities and needs. Whether it be to find food or look out for predators, babysit or even just a bit of grooming, the Spy Creatures act as a guide through a world where one with friends will always come out on top. Spy Wolf Pup discovers the trials of arctic wolf life in one of the harshest landscapes on Earth, where reliance upon one another is essential for survival against the elements. Spy Warthog meets a band of mongoose as they search for food before finding real warthogs that they groom for tasty morsels then turning their attention to Spy Warthog. Spy Hippo meets the real hippos as they forge a relationship with fish that clean their bodies plus offer a unique dental service. When a mob of real meer kats go off in search of food, Spy Meer kat is left in charge of the babies. Spy Cobra, who also meets the meer kat mob, is shown just how united they can be against their common enemy. Spy Crocodile walks and swims to the nest site of real crocodiles and dikkop birds as they take part in a mutual neighbourhood watch against hungry prowling monitor lizards. Spy Rattlesnake comes face to face with the prairie dogs and burrowing owls, and captures how they use their language skills to tell the rest of their community of approaching danger. Chimpanzees teach us about hierarchy and what it’s like to relax together in a jungle pool before uniting in arms to hunt baboons, a spectacular climax that no one chimp could accomplish on his own.

The Cult Next Door Ep 1/1 Thursday 26 January 9.00-10.00pm BBC TWO This documentary by acclaimed director Vanessa Engle tells the extraordinary story of a strange cult, which came to light in 2013, when a sensational news story broke about three women emerging from a small flat in Brixton in South London after decades in captivity. Tracing the group back to its roots in the 1970s, the film describes how its leader, Aravindan Balakrishnan, a student of Indian origin, believed in an international communist revolution and created a tiny political sect that followed the teachings of China’s Chairman Mao. The film features exclusive interviews with two of the women who escaped: Aisha Wahab, a 72 year-old Malaysian woman who was part of Balakrishnan’s group for 40 years, and Katy Morgan-Davies, Balakrishnan’s daughter, who was born and raised in captivity.

Always antidepressants go further for 50 per cent and longer than in faster the 1990s The average patient now takes antidepressants for 50 per cent longer than they did in the 1990s with some staying on pills for decades, a new study has shown. The prescribing of antidepressants is currently rising at around seven per cent a year, which has led to fears that depression is on the rise, or that doctors are handing out pills too liberally. But although the numbers of prescriptions has rocketed, since 2001 the number of people taking the drugs has largely plateaued. The average time that a person is on drugs is now nearly
six months (169 days) compared to just under four months (112 days) in 1995. One in four users take pills for an average of 15 months compared with eight months 20 years ago. But increasingly patients are being placed on ‘maintenance’ programmes to prevent future relapses, or ask to go back on pills if they know they are about to encounter a stressful situation, even if they are not currently depressed. Prof Lewis said antidepressants were often used by doctors because they were a quicker option than talking therapies.

I have tools to cope with negativity. I use deep breaths to get through most things. When someone is rude or puts me down, I never lower my own standards. I also accept criticism and know how to apologise. I’m always looking to learn and improve - and this means I need to cope with feedback. Be brutally direct in my desire to milk everything out of every opportunity. I feel as though my life is a ticking clock. I’ve set myself an ambitious goal: to be all that I can be. So I constantly review all the important things I want to achieve on my personalised pie chart. Each section measures my most important endeavours and I sense check these regularly. Take small steps and big leaps of faith by following your gut – particularly when it comes to people.
Bird flu
Bird flu has been confirmed in a flock of about 6,000 turkeys at a farm in Lincolnshire, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has said. The H5N8 strain of avian flu – the same as that found in a flock of turkeys on a nearby farm on 16 December – was confirmed by the UK’s chief veterinary officer, Nigel Gibbens. A number of birds at the farm in East Lindsey have died, and those remaining will be culled. The two cases are unlikely to be linked, but an investigation is under way, Defra said. A 3km protection zone and 10km surveillance zone have been put in place around the affected farm to limit the risk of the disease spreading. It comes after H5N8 avian flu was found in flocks in Carmarthenshire, south west Wales, and Settle, North Yorkshire, earlier this month.

Private health insurance sales surge
The number of people in Britain taking out private medical insurance has risen significantly for the first time since 2008, amid fears about the ongoing crisis gripping the NHS. After falling steeply between 2008 and 2011 and then staying flat, demand for private medical insurance cover in Britain rose by 2.1% in 2015 with just over 4 million people insured.
The figures, compiled by healthcare consultancy LaingBuisson, account for the period until the end of 2015. Figures for 2016 are not yet available. Philip Blackburn, an economist at LaingBuisson, said: “There has been a clear rise in interest in private healthcare recently as more and more people are dissatisfied with higher waiting on the NHS
and increased restrictions on NHS treatment. Private medical cover will benefit from this, and there is a wide choice of policy options at different prices to attract customers.” The rise in sales of private medical insurance (PMI) comes despite increases in insurance premium tax (IPT) during the period from 6% to 9.5%, which has made policies more expensive. But the
private medical industry is still far below its peak in 2008, when 4.35 million people – 12.4% of the UK population – had private cover. After the rise in 2015, a total of 4,022,000 people have cover, or 10.6% of the population. The entire rise in private cover is coming through company schemes, where the number of employees with medical insurance rose by 3.4% to 3,070,000 people, or 76.3% of the total. This suggests that the increased popularity of PMI may be down to a recovery in the economy and companies taking more staff, rather than fears about the state of the NHS. The number of individual subscribers to private medical insurance continued to decline, dropping by 1.7% to 952,000. Most are put off by the rising cost of buying cover independently. A typical PMI policy for a healthy 35-year-old costs about £650 a year, but this rises steeply to £2,300 for those aged 70, when claims are far more likely.

Eating disorders in middle-aged women Tens of thousands of middle aged women are suffering from eating disorders in a hidden crisis brought on by divorce, financial problems and bereavement in mid-life, new figures suggest. It was thought that eating disorders were most common among the young, but new research suggests around three per cent of women in their 40s and 50s have a recent eating problem. In contrast, around one in 100 women between 15 and 30 have been diagnosed with an eating condition, such as anorexia, bulimia or binge eating, although many more may be suffering in silence. “Many of the women who took part in this study told us this was the first time they had
ever spoken about their eating difficulties, so we need to understand why many women did not seek help. “It may be that there are some barriers women perceive in healthcare access or a lack of awareness among healthcare professionals.” The researchers also assessed factors that may be associated with the onset of an eating disorder including childhood happiness; parental divorce or separation; life events; relationship with parents; and sexual abuse. A woman’s risk of suffering from anorexia or bulimia, was increased by 4-10 per cent per unit score of ‘unhappiness’ if they reported being left feeling unhappy during their childhood.

Notes on a Scandal. Zoe Heller
‘You betrayed me. You told Bangs. What an idiot I’ve been to trust you. All that filth and lies you’ve been writing. You’re exploiting me.’ The book was shortlisted for the Booker prize in 2003 after receiving incredible reviews, the film in 2006. Sheba, a teacher of pottery meets Barbara Covett, a history teacher at St. Georges. Their friendship blossoms but turns sour once Sheba realises that her so-called friend has chronicled her affair with Steven, a minor at the school and once published will live richly off the proceeds! Sheba (Bathsheba) comes from a privileged middle/upper class, affluent family but she has not nourished the success and happiness she deserves. She drifted into marriage at twenty, with an older man, Richard who has already had a failed marriage behind him and children. He is trendy, decent, welleducated but not wonderfully exciting. Bill Nighy takes on this role with gusto. By the end of the novel she has lost his support and love. He is disgusted at her behaviour and she in turn becomes disgusted by Barbara’s smothering and intrusive nature. Poor Sheba. Her flaw is her stupidity and naivety. She forfeits everything through one stupid mistake. Polly, her seventeen year old daughter is a handful. She hates her mother, gets expelled from school for extreme bullying and then runs away from home. A wild child beyond discipline. On the other hand, there’s Ben, a Downe syndrome loveable child who is a handful for different reasons. Barbara is stern, matronly and extremely lonely after being rejected
Special Offers Visit:
by a former female lover. She becomes jealous of all the attention that Sheba attracts and notes this in her manuscript. The story hints early on about her unhealthy attraction and obsession with Sheba. At times we can empathise with her loneliness and desire to be loved more so in the novel than in the film. Judi Dench is manipulative and scheming in the film. Sheba, played by Cate Blanchett is just naïve and follows her own instincts. She likes to live on the knife-edge and craves excitement. Like a fool, she gets involved with a young guy from school and gets a kick out of it. She becomes insanely jealous of the thought that he might ‘dump’ her one day for a young girl and inevitably he tires of her and replaces her with a girl his own age. The reader is waiting for the bubble to burst and Sheba having to face inevitable consequences. She loses everythingher family, marriage, home, job and her reputation. The guys create smutty jokes about her and she is wickedly mocked. It is not surprising that one person who is obsessed with her stands by her after betraying her dirty little secret. Yes you’ve guessed it-Barbara. She is forced into taking early retirement because she knew of the affair and failed to notify the Head. Her consolation prize is the disgraced Sheba who she can smother to death and of course her manuscript which she can make a fortune out of! An exciting read and brilliant film. Obviously a message in there for the ladies. Publisher: Penguin. ISBN; 0-141-01225-0

How to Secure Your Google Account Out of all your online accounts, there’s a good chance that Google holds most of your information. Think about it: if you use Gmail for email, Chrome for web browsing, and Android for your mobile OS, then you’re already using Google for almost everything you do. Now that you’re thinking about how much is stored and saved by Google, think about how secure that account is. What if someone got access to your Google account? That would include bank statements in Gmail, personal files in Drive, stored pictures in Google Photos, chat logs from Hangouts, and a lot more. Scary thought, yeah? Let’s talk about how to make sure your account is as secure as it can be. Start with a Security Check up. Google makes checking your account security very easy: just use the built-in Security Check up tool on your accounts “Sign in & security” page. When you click the “Security Check up” option, you’ll be tossed into a multi-section form that will basically just ask you to review and confirm some information—this shouldn’t take that long, but you’ll definitely want to take your time and thoroughly review the information you find here. The first option is very simple: confirm
January 2017
your recovery phone number and email address. Basically, if you get locked out of your Google account, you’ll want to make sure this stuff is correct. I don’t mind using a second email address but will not give them my phone number, if they get hacked then the nuisance calls start! Next will be to see who has connected to your google account in the past month. This lets you know if you should change your password or if it is still secure. Followed by “Clean Up Apps That Have Permission to Access Your Account”. Some need access such as your email app but most don’t! So be very choosy what can access your account! The list will not only show what the app or device is, but exactly what it has access to. If you don’t remember granting something access (or just no longer use the app/device in question), then click the “remove” button to revoke its account access. If it’s an account you actually use and accidentally remove, you’ll just have to re-grant it access the next time you log in. The final stage would be to setup or check your “2 step login”. I’m not, as of today, completely sure that typing in your login (email address) and then getting a one-time password through your phone, every time, is any easier or more secure than using the normal Login and Password. You have now checked your google security and have peace of mind again and it only took a couple of minutes! See you next week unless you have a computer problem that needs putting right.

Bell Peppers And Sweet Peppers While the bell pepper is a member of the Capsicum family, it is the only Capsicum that does not produce capsaicin, the chemical causing the strong burning sensation usually associated with the rest of the family. Cultivars of the plant produce fruits in different colours, including red, yellow and orange. The fruit is also frequently consumed in its unripe form, when the fruit is still green. Green peppers are less sweet and slightly more bitter than red, yellow or orange peppers. Compared to green peppers, red peppers have more vitamins and nutrients and contain the antioxidant lycopene. The level of carotene, another antioxidant, is nine times higher in red peppers. Red peppers also have twice the vitamin C content of green peppers. The taste of ripe peppers can vary with growing conditions, the sweetest are fruit allowed to ripen fully on the plant in full sunshine, while fruit harvested green and after-ripened in storage are less sweet.

How To Stop Cats Toileting InYour Garden Ultrasonic Cat Scarers These are pretty effective but quite expensive and have been known to vanish from allotment plots. I had a scarer owner complain that it was useless, this big white cat kept coming to his plot and toileting. The thing is a lot of white cats are deaf! Scent Cat Deterrents Special granules, lion dung and orange peelings are said to deter cats but in my experience none of them do much good. Netting and Stringing Netting them out works well and strings over the bed can work but stringing is, I think , more effort than netting. planting areas and work it into the partially prepared soil. 8. The greatest disturbances to partially prepared soils will be the making of planting holes for trees, so make these as soon as the weather and soil conditions allow even if you don’t intend to plant trees until next spring. When we first decided where to plant trees we were still only visiting the property for holidays so preparations and plantings had to be carefully phased. So starting at Easter and through the summer holidays we dug planting holes after any thunder storms that occurred. The holes were then filled with green kitchen waste and weeds as temporary mini compost heaps which had rotted down within six months to then be worked into the bottom of the planting holes.
It’s Only Childs Play Children of all ages love bugs and creepy crawlies. Capturing bugs to study them is a fantastic way of introducing them to wildlife. There are bugs a plenty to be found in the garden from worms to ants and slugs to snails. Get your children to go on a bug crawl collecting what they find in plastic containers. These can be studies with magnifying glasses.

Water Lillie
Weekly Guide: Growing Tomatoes from seeds
Prepare the plants to go outside
Plant your water lily root stock in a large pot of almost pure compost. They are really very hungry plants. No peat moss, bark, or other floating materials should be used. Then cover the soil with about 5 centimetres of gravel (or with heavy pieces of broken slate or shingles) to stop fish digging and uprooting the plant. It also stops the soil discolouring the water. Planting & care: Water lily ponds need to be at least 35 to 60 centimetres deep and have a surface area of at least 1 square metre, for a good carbon and oxygen exchange between the air and water. They should be selfregulating and never need cleaning if you have the right balance of plants and fish. To keep the water healthy, it is a good idea to include some oxygenating plants. A good rule of thumb is two oxygenating plants, like grasses or reeds, to one water lily. Water Lillie in Spain light blue. Water lilies like full sun, but a combination of full sun and dappled shade for part of the day is best. Blazing sunshine all day will make the evaporation rate from your pond skyrocket and green water is often a problem with full sun and well fertilized plants. Do not use chemicals to control the algae, it will likely kill your lilies. Instead, encourage a healthy growth of submerged plants like Anacharis which will help starve out the algae. Some floating hyacinths or water lettuce will also help, but watch that they do not get out of control.
As odd as it might sound, plants grown from seeds indoors need to get used to being outside. This is called “hardening.” Begin this process when there is no longer any danger of a frost. At this point, the plants should be somewhere between 4” and 6” high. To harden the plants, take them outside during the day and then bring them in for the night.

If you have room to park your car you can have your own swimming pool!
Select and prepare an area for transplanting the plants
Pick a nice sunny location. Have the kids dig holes about two to three feet apart with the spade. The holes should be wide enough for the peat pots to fit. They should be just deep enough so that the top of the pots are just below the dirt or the first leaves are just above the dirt. If you aren’t using peat pots, the holes may not need to be so wide, but it won’t hurt if the holes are too big. Too big is better than too small! Add some plant food to the hole, but not too much since adding too much can kill the plants.

viewpoint
El combate de lucha libre
There was to be a grand wrestling match in Alqueria. A combatant from each of the barrios would contend for the title of Alquerian All Comers Champion. To organise such an event in a town with a potent barrio divide and intolerant hatred for the opposing faction may seem like a well-planned disaster waiting to happen. The powers that be thought it would allow barrio rivalry to be confined to the ring and away from the streets. The naïve fools. The Alquerian weapons of choice tended to be cobblestones, bricks, bottles and fire-bombs. Hand to hand combat was considered too dangerous so outside wrestlers had to be recruited. Only the meanest and fittest fighters were head-hunted by the respective barrios. They were given Alquerian citizenship, something which can be purchased reasonably cheaply and briefed in the ways of the Pueblo. Manuela took an active part in the selection of the Hill People’s champion. She spent quite a time interviewing each personally. She was very thorough and enthusiastic in her singular selection technique. Santiago ‘Spleen Ripper’ Gonzales was to represent the Hill People while Ángel ‘Granny Masher’ Tierno was the chosen one of the Newcomers. Both wrestlers left a grisly reputation of broken limbs and chewed ears in their wake. Loco Paco regarded the
two fighters with an academic interest and threw morsels of food to them. It wasn’t until he heard them speak that he realised they weren’t some exotic variety of hairless Ouran-Utang but human. Paco was rightly disappointed and turned his attention once more to his imaginary rodent friend, Bert. Come the day of the contest and the Town’s Plaza was packed with what seems like the entire population of Alqueria. The square was regaled in garlands and bunting. The wrestling ring stands ready and the crowd have already started exchanging jibes and insults. Enter the protagonists, lumbering, knuckles scraping the flagstones. The crowd goes wild. Things more tangible than insults are now thrown, a number of supporters are felled by well-aimed projectiles. The ring was torn apart and its planking used as weapons. All in all it was a well-planned disaster that had an inevitability Nostradamus would have found easy meat. The two wrestlers took refuge in the Bar la Casa Devante where they discovered they were once close friends. They had shared the same room while on an advanced grunting course organised by the World Wrestling Council. They sat chatting while bedlam reigned outside. The irony of the situation seemed somehow quite normal in Alqueria.
Size Matters
The last firewood we ordered turned out to be gigantic misshapen monsters that came in an enormous lorry driven by a small but ebullient Spaniard, and was sufficient for four winters. Each year since he has appeared at our gate in the forlorn hope that we have somehow managed to burn it all up and so will need some more. Last January he once more graced our gate. I took him to the woodshed and showed him our diminished pile of slumbering timber trolls. ‘We have enough for this winter. We don’t want any more before March.’ I told him. He took this sad news as cheerfully as ever. ‘March.’ He said. ‘March.’ I repeated. On the first of March there he was! ‘You want firewood.’ His tone was midway between question and statement. ‘Yes,’ I answered. ‘But we don’t want a big lorry like last time.’ ‘Vale, I’ll bring a small lorry.’ I pressed home my advantage. ‘And we don’t want big logs. We want little logs.’ ‘You can have little logs.’ He beamed. I felt I needed to emphasise the point. ‘We want a little lorry of little logs.’ ‘You want a little lorry, or little logs?’ Maybe I hadn’t been clear enough. ‘No, a little lorry of little logs.’ ‘You can have a little lorry, or little logs.’ Time to explain again. ‘We want a little lorry. We want little logs.
By Jos Biggs editor@soltimes.com
We want a little lorry of little logs.’ Obviously, I thought my Spanish was letting me down. ‘No, you can’t have that.’ ‘Why not?’ ‘You can have a little lorry with big logs, or a big lorry with little logs.’ ‘But we want a little lorry. Full of little logs. We don’t want a big lorry, or big logs.’ He shrugged his shoulders, maintaining the bonhomie of one who has lost sixpence and found a shilling. ‘You can have a little lorry of big logs, or a big lorry of little logs.’ ‘But we want…’ I could see I was getting nowhere neared a solution, but a lot nearer confusion, so I changed tack. ‘Why?’ ‘Because the little logs are on the big lorry, and the big logs are on the little lorry.’ I suppose that did make sense. I pondered. Big lorry, little logs. Little lorry, big logs; Which was the less inconvenient? He watched me, like a cheerful Christmas robin who had just spied a juicy worm.

What A Pickle
SolTimes
Britain is in the grip of a courgette shortage that could last for months after a continental cold snap hit supplies at a time of peak demand from consumers keen to pursue New Year resolutions to eat more greens. Wholesale prices for courgette, a staple of the Mediterranean diet, have more than tripled after unusually cold and wet weather in Spain where most of the European supplies are grown. Consumers across the UK, many of whom are keen to pursue healthier diets, have complained on social media about a lack of courgettes in supermarkets and online retailers. Jordi Vorderman, the UK sales manager at Dutch vegetable supplier Valstar Holland, said courgette prices had quadrupled since the summer. He said: “The main issue is that supplies are low because of cold nights in Spain and Italy. The cold affects courgettes a lot.” He speculated that some UK supermarkets were not prepared to buy courgettes at such inflated prices. “Prices are very high – they are above £20 for a 5kg box. So what retailers are probably doing is that they are not buying at these prices and would rather go empty in the stores than buy at these silly levels. During the summer prices are between £4 and £6.” Vorderman added: “Everybody in January tries to eat a more healthy diet, but the real problem is supply. And it’s not just courgettes. Lots of prices are extraordinarily high – peppers, aubergines, tomatoes.”

For the roast avocado, 4 just-ripe avocados. Zest and juice of 1 lime, 1 green chilli. A pinch of dried chipotle or red chilli. A handful of wholemeal breadcrumbs or oats. Olive oil For the slaw ½ white or green cabbage. A small bunch of coriander, 1 green chilli Juice of 1 lime, Salt. For the charred salsa 4 ripe vine tomatoes or tomatillos, 4 spring onions 2 red chillies, 2 garlic cloves. A swig of red wine vinegar. Salt.. Lime juice (optional). Agave syrup or honey (optional) To assemble 100g of manchego or feta cheese, crumbled 12 small corn tortillas Limes and chilli, to serve. Keep the skin on the avocados and cut them in half. Take out the stone and cut them into
quarters, put them into a bowl, and sprinkle with the lime zest and juice. Toss well to coat. Roughly chop the green chilli, add to the bowl with a pinch of chilli powder/chipotle and toss gently. Put the breadcrumbs on a plate and roll the avocados in them. Put on a baking tray, drizzle with olive oil and bake at 180C/350F/gas mark 4 for 25 minutes. Alternatively, shallow-fry them in a good bit of olive oil. Put a griddle on a high heat. While it heats, thinly shred the cabbage and roughly chop the coriander, then combine in a bowl. Chop the chilli and add to the bowl with the lime and a good pinch of salt, then mix until well combined. Pile into a serving bowl. Char the tomatoes, spring onions and chillies on the griddle
until soft and blackened all over, turning with tongs every 30 seconds or so. Once the whole lot looks good, put it into a blender with the garlic, a good swig of red wine vinegar and a generous pinch of salt and blitz until you have a punchy salsa. Taste and check it is nicely balanced: add more vinegar, lime or a little agave syrup or honey if it needs sweetness. Warm the tortillas in a dry frying pan on a medium heat or over an open flame, turning with tongs. Once they are warm and a little charred around the edges, pile them on to a plate. Put them in the middle of the table with the avocado, salsa, slaw, cheese, and some extra chilli and limes for squeezing over, and let everyone make their own tacos. Serves 4.

Veal chops with sage and white wine
Serves 4 3 tablespoons vegetable oil 4 veal loin chops, cut 18mm thick 90g plain flour, spread on a plate or on waxed paper 12 dried sage leaves Salt Freshly ground pepper, about 4 twists 6 tablespoons dry white wine 30g butter Heat the oil in a heavybottomed frying pan over medium-high heat. Turn the chops over in the flour, coating both sides, and shake off any excess. (Do not coat meat with flour until you are
ready to sautĂŠ it. The flour becomes damp and the meat does not brown properly.) Slip the chops and the sage into the hot oil. Cook for about 8 to 10 minutes altogether, turning the chops two or three times so that they cook evenly on both sides. (Veal should not cook too long or it will become dry. The meat is done when it is rosy pink on the inside when cut.) When cooked, remove to a warm dish and add salt and pepper. Tilt the frying pan and draw away most of the fat with a spoon. Add the wine and turn the
Coffee ice cream

4 egg yolks, 130g granulated sugar, 325ml espresso coffee, made using milk instead of water, 240ml double cream. For the chocolate sauce 170ml double cream, 2 tablespoons cocoa, 4 teaspoons granulated sugar. Beat the egg yolks and sugar until they become a pale yellow cream. Combine the espresso coffee and double cream and mix into the beaten egg yolks until uniformly blended. Warm the mixture in a saucepan over low heat, stirring constantly until it swells to nearly twice its original
volume. Pour into freezer trays. When cool, stir thoroughly and place in the freezer for at least 5 hours. Stir every 30 to 40 minutes. Just before serving, prepare the sauce by combining the double cream, cocoa and sugar in a small saucepan and stirring it over low heat for about 6 minutes, or until it becomes a smooth, thick cream. Spoon the ice-cream, which should be quite firm but not rock hard, from the freezer trays into individual bowls. Pour the hot sauce over each serving and serve immediately.
heat to high. Boil rapidly until the liquid has almost completely evaporated and become a little syrupy. While boiling, loosen any cooking residue in the pan and add what juice the chops may have thrown off in the dish. When the wine has almost completely evaporated and thickened, turn the heat to very low and mix in the butter. Return the chops to the frying pan for a few moments, turning them over in the sauce. Transfer them to a warm serving dish, pour the remainder of the sauce over them, and serve immediately.
Spanish Style Devilled Eggs
Easy Spanish Tapas
Most traditional Spanish lunches start out with appetizers or tapas. The most common might be olives, ham and cheese, while other families put out roasted red peppers, anchovies, or devilled eggs. This deviled eggs with tuna recipe is a traditional Spanish egg recipe. Deviled eggs are often served as a pre-lunch appetizer in homes around Spain. This deviled eggs recipe combines tuna and tomato sauce with creamy egg yolks. The dish is then topped with homemade mayonnaise and sprinkled with sweet Spanish paprika.

Food Information
Pork belly with rhubarb pickle
1.5kg pork belly, skin scored. Flaky sea salt, 2 tsp fennel seeds, ½ tsp black peppercorns, 50g molasses sugar, 3 tbsp olive oil, 3 carrots, peeled and cut into 5cm lengths 2 celery sticks, cut into 5cm lengths. 500ml dry cider, 100ml water. For the pickle 500g rhubarb, cut into 3-4cm lengths, 70g
cider vinegar, 30g caster sugar, 1-2 tsp coriander seeds, toasted and lightly bashed. Heat the oven to 230C/450F/gas mark 8. Warm the fennel seeds and peppercorns in a dry frying pan, then roughly grind. Add the molasses, oil and half a teaspoon of salt, and work the mixture into a rough paste. Rub this into the flesh of the
pork, taking care not to get it on the skin and working it right into the layers of meat and fat. Scatter the carrots and celery in the prepared roasting tray, then lay the pork skin side up on top. Pour in the cider and water, again taking care not to get any on the skin, then roast for 1020 minutes. Turn down
the heat to 170C/335F/ gas mark 3 and roast for another 90 minutes, until the flesh is tender. In the last half-hour of cooking, toss the rhubarb with the vinegar, sugar, coriander seeds and a pinch of salt. Tip the lot into an oven dish and roast alongside the pork for 15 minutes, until soft, then remove from the oven.
The pork cooks slowly in molasses and cider until it’s dark, treacly and succulent.

Having fun in the Maldives The Maldives is unusual as a holiday destination because of the fun things to do whether you are staying on a plush resort, in Male’, or in a simple guesthouse on an island in a faraway atoll. Entertainment and daily excursions are organised at every resort so don’t be shy about joining in. Excursions will include fishing and cruising (to watch dolphins dance) as well as visits to the capital, Male’, and to genuinely deserted islands, perhaps for swimming and a picnic, and shopping expeditions to neighbouring inhabited islands. If you stay in a guesthouse on an inhabited island, you will have the chance to meet Maldivians, experience local culture and cuisine, and join in what the islanders do for relaxation, such as playing football in the late afternoon or relaxing over a soft drink and eating in a seaside café. You will be able to organise fun activities for yourself, like going on a Dhoni, to try your hand at line fishing, or swim in crystal clear lagoons watching marine life through a snorkel. A must visit is to the restaurant Ithaa, at 5 meters below sea level, it offers unparalleled 180-degree views of marine life, while enjoying your food.

Cruise Guide
Discover Maldives
The Colourful Side
Turquoise waters
It is estimated that nearly half the guests on holiday in the Maldives arrive with the intention of snorkelling or diving or, as soon as they see the crystal clear waters of an island’s lagoon and the colourful fish and corals, can’t resist giving it a try. Snorkelling is open to everyone who can swim and even children as young as ten can learn how to scuba dive. It’s easy in the Maldives.
Snorkelling: Resort dive centres run courses to help the beginner learn how to snorkel and the instructors will advise on where best to observe the colourful world underwater. To avoid sunburn while gently floating in the lagoon, wearing a T-shirt is advisable and even if you are a strong swimmer it is better to wear a life jacket when snorkelling far from the shore, as currents can carry away the unwary. Beginners at snorkelling should practise to gain confidence in shallow lagoons first and will find it remarkable how many fascinating fish are to be seen close to the beach in less than a metre of water. Reef edges are simply stunning for fish and glowing corals, so resorts with a house reef close to the shore are great for beginners. The Maldives is home to 21 species of whale and dolphin and they are frequently sighted as they cross in the channels from one side of an atoll to another. They are sometimes spotted during the crossing from the airport to Male’. Many resorts organise cruises to the sea-lanes that dolphins regularly use, and independent dolphin watching cruises by Dhoni can be arranged by the accommodation provider. Operating out of Male’ (bookings can be coordinated through your resort) the whale submarine is a chance for young and old to visit the underwater world without getting wet, while enjoying the exciting experience of diving in a real submarine. The cabin of the submarine is fully air-conditioned and has a normal atmospheric pressure so passengers breathe normal air. The whale submarine has safety features to ensure the safest, most comfortable ride, and is operated by a fully trained and certified team of pilots. On most dives passengers can see schools of blue or yellow-striped snappers and common lionfish, yellow box fish and sometimes turtles. Depending on the time of the day, current and many other factors, the submarine may dive to some historical sites such as a shipwreck or exciting places like shark feeding areas.

Mercedes have signed British teenager George Russell to their junior driving programme. The 18-year-old, who will compete in GP3 this year with ART Grand Prix, joins as the team’s third junior driver, with Pascal Wehrlein and Esteban Ocon already in Formula 1. Russell was a title-winner in his first season of racing in the BRDC Formula 4 Championship in 2014 and received the McLaren Autosport BRDC Award in that same year.

Brazilian legend Rivaldo has tipped Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho to follow in his footsteps by joining Barcelona. Rivaldo spent five seasons at the Nou Camp between 1997 and 2002, where won two La Liga titles and was crowned Ballon d’Or winner in 1999. Coutinho has established himself as one of the Premier League’s brightest stars at Anfield and Rivaldo feels a move to Barca to play alongside international team-mate Neymar is a natural future step for the 24-year-old Brazilian.

Djokovic Out!
Defending champion Novak Djokovic suffered a shock defeat by world number 117 Denis Istomin in the second round of the Australian Open. The six-time winner struggled for rhythm and lost 7-6 (10-8) 5-7 2-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 in four hours and 48 minutes. It is the first time Djokovic, 29, has lost in the second round of a Grand Slam since 2008 at Wimbledon. The shock result leaves world number one Andy
Murray as favourite to win his first Australian Open title in Melbourne. It is only the second time in seven years that Djokovic has lost to a
United Keen On Griezmann

Ryder Cup 2018: Europe to increase wildcards
from the Czech Masters in Prague in August this year. The changes were announced following a meeting of the European Tour’s Tournament Committee in Abu Dhabi.
Europe’s Ryder Cup captain Thomas Bjorn will have four wildcard picks for his team in 2018. The increase from three is among several changes the European Tour has made to its qualifying criteria for the event at Le Golf National in France. Tournaments in the latter half of the season will carry weighted points, helping in-form players to qualify. Players will also only have to play four tournaments instead

THE TECHNOLOGY The new Porsche Boxster 718 will likely remain our favourite convertible between $50,000 and $100,000 when it goes on sale this June. Pricing starts at $57,050 for the base model and $69,450 for the S. When it comes to outright speed and driving reward, only the Corvette convertible is close. And that’s an alternative we’d bet few Boxster owners consider. Certainly there are others—the BMW Z4, the MercedesBenz SLK, and the Jaguar F-type convertible among them—but even
Porsche engineers don’t hesitate to laugh at most of these as genuine benchmarks for their mid-engine sports car. In that regard, the Boxster stands out as an enthusiast’s car for those who appreciate not only a real driver’s instrument but also a genuinely well-made machine. Both Boxsters are capable and rewarding cars worthy of the name they bear. Had their flat-sixpowered predecessors never existed, we’d be singing their praises without hesitation. But these are driver’s cars not race cars. Continued on page 38.

2017 Porsche 718 The cars are getting new suspension, brakes, styling tweaks, and dropping Boxster Improved, but is six-cylinder engines for four. it a better sports car?
It’s subtle, but it’s there. Listen carefully when chugging along at low speed in Porsche’s new flat-four-powered 718 Boxster and you’ll recognize what you hear. Sure, it’s damped by water jackets and a turbo, distinctly lacking mechanical clatter and subdued by decades of internal-combustion progress, but there’s no denying the fundamental thrum of the thing. Under it all is the undeniable lope of an air-cooled Volkswagen Beetle. As before, Porsche’s new 718 Boxster initially comes in only two versions: the 300-horsepower base model and the 350-horsepower S. Either can be had with
a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dualclutch (PDK) automatic transmission. Fifty horsepower is no pittance, but the difference between the base and S-model 718 Boxsters is nothing relative to the vast chasm that separates them, experientially, from their predecessors. The 718’s turbocharged flat-four powerplants, displacing 2.0 and 2.5 litres, respectively, are the headlining changes. Both yield 35 more horsepower than the 2.7and 3.4-litre naturally aspirated flat-sixes they replace. Torque is the big story, however, increasing by 74 lb-ft on the base car and 43 lb-ft on the S.
