DEBRA Organisation Food Rationing In UK Charity Dip!!

Many Thanks to all of those who participated in the Charity Dip at Guardamar Playa on December 26th. 2016 The event, which was sponsored by Active Surfaces, was a huge success. Many of the participants suggested we make this an annual event such was the enthusiasm shown by our dippers. With calm sea and glorious sunshine we all congregated at the Bar Isla Tabarca, where Mercury FM provided entertainment Free of Charge in support of the Charity. This was added to be our Two voluntary singers- Donny and Paul- who kept the crowd entertained long after the event was over. The idea was to have lots of fun whilst

raising much needed funding for the Debra Organisation. Proceed from the event including a Raffle on the day are all put towards providing support for families with Children who suffer from this terrible skin condition. Home support, Nurses, Medical Research, Dressings, Training for parents and many other things are provided solely through Charity Contribution and so on behalf of all of these people a huge thank you must go out to those who took part and also those who donated much needed funds. A poster was designed with spaces for businesses which were sold and volunteers went around Bars and Shops to fill the poster.

John Errington went around Almoradi whilst Michelle of Female Focus covered the Quesada area-many thanks to both for their support and assistance. Active Surfaces provided Insurance and organised collection and the Raffle with prizes donated by Active Surfaces, Pick n Pay in Guardamar, Female Focus, Ibex Insurance and Bar Isla Tabarca. The Total amount raised was 1,451.94€. Once again we cannot thank everyone enough for their help and participation-We may meet again next year and hopefully raise even more!

Supermarkets are rationing vegetables after bad weather hit crops across Europe. Lettuce, broccoli, butternut squash, aubergines and courgettes have been particularly affected by the shortage. F r u s t r a t e d c u s t o m e r s have shared photographs of empty supermarket shelves on Twitter. Meanwhile, some online shoppers have been told iceberg, romaine and sweet gem varieties of lettuce are completely out of stock. Some Tesco and Morrisons branches are limiting sales of iceberg lettuces to three per customer because of “continued weather problems in Spain”. The vast majority of the UK’s vegetables come from the city

of Murcia in south eastern Spain during the winter months. But severe flooding and freezing conditions have damaged farms across the region - causing millions of euros worth of damage and leaving the ground too soaked to grow new crops. Price rises are possible if the weather does not improve soon, and some healthy eaters have already complained that the cost of an iceberg lettuce has nearly tripled in recent weeks. Some supermarket chains have begun to buy in lettuces from US farms more than 5,300 miles away to address the shortage.

NEWS Council’s Failings The leader of the Izquierda Unida in San Miguel de Salinas, Bienvenida Campillo, has denounced the council for failing to implement a municipal project to revitalize one of the most iconic attractions in the town, the site of the cave houses which have been in situ since time immemorial. She said that the work “remains stalled because of a lack of interest by the government team to put it in hand” stating that it has been ready to go “since 2011 when it first obtained the approval of the Generalitat, but since which time nothing has been done” The plan to update about 20 houses was first muted back in 2003 with the approval of a whole series of local actions that would improve the standing of the cave house dwellers.

Madrid gets world’s first printed bridge The world’s first printed footbridge has been erected in Madrid by a team made up of the Institute of Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) and contractor Acciona. With a total length of 12m and a width of 1.75m, the bridge was printed using microreinforced concrete. It was completed last month in the urban park of Castilla-La Mancha in Alcobendas, a suburb of Madrid. The IAAC, which has been researching the use of 3D printing in construction for the past 15 years, commented in its press statement that the technology had not previously been applied for a complete civil engineering project.

Mystery Find

A resident has stumbled on a mystery structure on Cala Mosca, the last green area on Orihuela Costa where a developer plans to build 1,500 new houses. The structure is made of bricks and stones. It descends 10-15 metres at a gradient of 45 degrees leading to what appears to be a tunnel or cave.

British Airways launches seven new routes

British Airways is launching seven new routes from Manchester Airport. The move is a huge endorsement for the airport and represents a significant turnaround for BA which sold virtually all its routes from the region

to FlyBe in 2007. From May, the national flag carrier will launch a series of summeronly direct flights from Manchester to the popular Spanish sunspots of Alicante, Malaga, Ibiza and Palma, the Greek island of Mykonos

and Nice in the south of France as well as a weekly service to London City Airport. Since reducing its presence at the airport in 2007, BA has operated only its Heathrow shuttle service, with up to ten flights a day at peak times.

Art Arrests

Spanish police arrested three people on Tuesday in connection with the theft of five paintings by the Irish-born artist Francis Bacon that were worth 25 million euros ($26.88 million), the Interior Ministry said. Police raided six homes in the Madrid region and seized a gun, ammunition, manuals to cracking safes, laser devices and oxy-fuel cylinders used to cut metal, the ministry said in a

statement. The three people were “directly connected” to the robbery and were part of a group that burgled homes across Spain, the statement said. Five other members of the gang were also arrested for a further 15 robberies. The art works, which police have not identified, have not been found since they were stolen from a home back in 2015, a ministry spokesman said.

The latest high-profile campaign to fail

When the Lily Drone first hit the web, it created quite a stir. A simple, throwable drone that could autonomously follow and film you down the slopes for just $500?! Sounds too good to be true, right? Right. It’s officially never happening. A post from Lily Robotics—with the eye-rolling title “The Adventure Comes to and End”—explains the situation. In short? No more money, even with some $34 million in pre-orders, thanks to a rip-roaring pre-order campaign that will

never follow through. From the post: Over the past few months, we have tried to secure financing in order to unlock our manufacturing line and ship our first units – but have been unable to do this. This, unfortunately, is not an unheard of end for crowdfunding campaigns. Kickstarter has done its best to mitigate these failures by requiring folks who wish to run a project to show off a working prototype, a bar that some particularly horrible projects fail to pass. Other crowd-funding websites, like IndieGogo, aren’t nearly as diligent and let all kinds of total vaporware get through. In this case, Lily Robotics ran its own pre-order campaign before any products were available for sale, so there was no third-party vetting the process

WOW

If you’ve ever wished that the games you were playing on your PC could leak out and paint themselves on the room around you, today is your lucky day. Razer’s “Project Ariana,” revealed at CES today, does exactly that by using a smart projector to expand the graphics of your favourite game far beyond the bezels of your screen. Using a projector to expand the borders of a screen is not a novel idea. It was also the premise behind the Microsoft “IllumiRoom,” which showed extremely well in some demos a few years ago, but never actually came to market. Razer’s version comes in the form of a projector that you would actually physically mount to your ceiling, and then hook up to the PC you’re playing games on. The catch, besides what seems like it would be fairly annoying installation, is that the feature would need to be supported by the game, though Razer says the functionality is pretty easy to patch in. That makes sense given that the expanded projection is a relatively small amount of new imagery, stretched out to fill the whole wall. The same generally effect can be achieved in many games using built-in settings that allow a player to expand the field-of-view and get a bit of a fish-eye effect. Like Razer’s Project Valerie, Ariana is a concept, with no locked-down price or date of available. But Ariana might be slightly less of a fantasy, with Razer hoping to bring it to market sometime later this year if the demand is there. The demand, and the wall space.

Alcampo Least Expensive Online Supermarket

Alcampo had the least expensive online prices over the last six months, according to a Spanish consumer interest association. Spain’s Organización de Consumidores y Usuarios (OCU) reviewed the basket price of the country’s largest online supermarkets, and found that an Alcampo basket was 15% cheaper than those of Caprabo.com or El Corte Inglés. Prices for the selected objects, including fresh produce, packaged goods, and pharmacy, stayed stable, with a variation of 0.1%. Lentils shot up 34% in price, and the price of lettuce increased by 7%. But citrus fruits, like limes

and oranges, fell by 32% and 23%, respectively, evening out any price irregularities. Alcampo and Eroski were the two retailers who cut their costs most online in recent months, (-6% and -7%) while Mercadona (+4%) and Caprabo (+5%) raised their prices by the largest margin. Owned by France’s Groupe Auchan, Alcampo is Spain’s second largest supermarket chain. The OCU also named the chain as Spain’s least expensive brick-andmortar food retailer for the eighth consecutive year, in November of last year.

It’s not a lot to go on, but with the two most successful components of the last film’s success in play, it’s hard not to be excited that they’ll be sending Wolverine off with a bang.

Cuticle jewellery for nails

At Rodarte, they called this SS17 trend “cuticle jewellery”, which is rather a nice idea, isn’t it? A little gold necklace for your nails, a luxurious gift to your deserving hands. Start with a layer of clear varnish, then very carefully line your cuticles with a dense glitter polish. This should be easy. Unfortunately, it’s not. If you have trouble, try a smaller brush. If you still have trouble, try a glitter pen, or dip a toothpick into your bottle, and dot it on with the tip.

More than 620,000 people in the UK have a faulty gene that puts them at risk of heart disease and sudden death from heart attacks or cardiac arrests, and most of them are unaware of the risk, a charity has warned. The British Heart Foundation (BHF), which released the figure, said it was 100,000 more than

previous estimates. But the true figure could be even higher because of under-diagnosis and the presence of other, as yet unknown, faulty genes, it said. About 12 people aged 35 or under die every week from heart conditions with no apparent explanation, mostly due to these inherited conditions. They

can affect people of any age, and children have a 50% chance of inheriting the faulty gene from a parent who carries it. BHF says most people affected remain undiagnosed and unaware of the risks to their health, and the possibility they could pass on such conditions to their children.

Last April, the former England and Nottinghamshire batsman James Taylor was forced to retire at the age of just 26 after scans revealed he had ARVC (arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy), an inherited condition caused by a change or mutation in one or more genes.

Air pollution is a crisis that “plagues” the UK, particularly children, according to the UN’s special rapporteur on hazardous substances and wastes. Baskut Tuncak, who was appointed by the UN human rights

council and completed a 15-day mission to the UK on Tuesday, said there was an “urgent need for political will by the UK government to make timely, measurable and meaningful interventions”. Most air quality zones in

New cleansers that are big trouble for makeup

Few products have been so keenly anticipated as influential blogger Caroline Hirons’ new Double Cleanse (£24), a duo comprising a solid oil cleanser for makeup removal and a cream to cleanse the naked skin beneath. The ritual of double cleansing has become standard for many beauty enthusiasts, who take the view that a single cleanse is akin to

bathing fully clothed. I broadly agree, at least when wearing foundation and heavy eye makeup (I practically never use eye makeup remover: there’s no need if your cleanser’s up to the job). Hirons, a fellow cleansing zealot, has been smart to tap into this one sound idea rather than to launch a comprehensive range, and has piggybacked on a popular existing (if

sometimes inconsistent) brand, Pixi, instead of starting from scratch. It should fairly be said that Hirons’ balm is remarkably similar to Clinique’s excellent Take The Day Off (£22), and the cream is a version of Clarins’ great and now bafflingly discontinued Extra-Comfort Cleansing Cream. Double Cleanse is as good as each, perhaps even better. While many

balms remain thick and immobile, step one liquefies instantly, and dissolves effortlessly every scrap of heavy makeup, leaving skin clean but mercifully squeaky free. Step two – velvety and elegant – is a pleasure. Neither stings nor tingles, even when smeared carelessly over eyes. My only gripe is the 50/50 partitioned packaging, separating equal doses of cleanser. An appealing gimmick, certainly, but inherently flawed. I’d have preferred one-third balm and twothirds cream, so the latter could be used again in the morning on bare skin. Even if used only at night, the cream’s more fluid formula will always empty first (50ml of cream cleanser doesn’t go far) and one is left with an oversized container of balm. As someone who hates the inevitability of running down conditioner before its matching shampoo, I predict frustration.

Song For Marion

“I’m not the life and soul of the party and full of joy and guts. I’m miserable old Arthur. I’ve ruined everything I had and it’s too late.” Arthur Harris played by British veteran actor Terence Stamp more akin to playing the arch villain is struggling to deal with his wife, Marion’s cancer. Undoubtedly he loves her, this is never in question being her main carer but to a point of over -protectiveness stifling her natural energy. His relationship with his son James is frosty. It seems as if James has proved a disappointment and Marion’s illness has caused a huge rift between them. Arthur is bad-tempered, the antithesis of his wife, Marion played by the renowned actress Vanessa Redgrave, held in such high-esteem by the American playwright Tennessee Williams as the greatest actress of our time. Within the partnership, she is the life force whereas Arthur represses his emotions, coming across as a misery dampening his wife’s enthusiasm for wanting to compete in a musical competition. “Maybe I’m crazy” and “Hey, did you happen to see the most beautiful girl in the world” or “Let’s talk about sex, baby” form part of the repertoire of the OAPz-an unconventional type of choir chirpy and eccentric encouraged by a charismatic Elizabeth played by Gemma Arterton. The OAPz are precisely that-seniors wanting to sing and have fun. They rise to Elizabeth’s challenge and don the necessary attire to create a rock and roll image more ageing Mick Jagger, clad in leathers with long hairpieces, strumming invisible guitars and kicking ass. What an endearing sight. Explicit lyrics extolling the excitement of sex and game for a laugh Timothy who overdoes the jive and has to be taken in an ambulance to hospital to recover! And what about wheelchair bound Marion?

Special Offers Visit:

She is in the thick of it agreeing to sing a solo version of “True Colours” dedicated to her grumpy misunderstood husband. After her performance everyone present congratulates her on her wonderful rendition apart from the most important person in her life. Arthur slinks off for a smoke wanting to avoid the limelight, feeling dejected. It is Elizabeth who chastises him. Rightly so. “You have this wonderful woman who adores you and she just sang in front of everyone for you. She put everything she had into singing that song.” “Marion” is a change of direction from the earlier brutally realistic crime movies from writer and director Paul Andrew Williams (The Cottage, London to Brighton and Cherry Tree Lane). It is more of a tear-jerker like Brassed Off or Calendar Girls or even The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, films of that ilk. When the film was released in the US it was the “Unfinished Song” with closing lyrics provided by Celine Dion from her 2013 album “Loved Me Back to Life.” “Life is a story that’s all twists and turns/ All that matters is the lessons we learn.” Arthur has to build some very solid bridges with his son. He has to travel on a journey of self-discovery revealing his true colours and acting on Elizabeth’s advice: “Let everyone see you” instead of hiding away like a recluse locked inside his own grief. Marion gave them all the strength to carry on which culminated in Arthur’s song dedicated to her: “Goodnight my angel.” As Duke Orsino bemoaned: “If music be the food of love, play on.” Sing your heart out Arthur Harris!

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. The only professional computer help that comes from over 38 years’ experience and a University education. You can contact me for an appointment at my workshop or I can come to you, by calling 689 892 745 or by Email: canducomputing@hotmail. co.uk. I don’t know about you but there does seem to be a number of needless folders and shortcut to folders in a Windows file system. For example, “Documents and Settings” is a pointer to “Users” (both in the SAME directory, “All Users” simply point to “\Programdata” and the list goes on. My question is ‘Why have useless folders and pointers to useless folders’? What Is the “System Volume Information” Folder, and Can I Delete It? On drive’s formatted with the NTFS file system, this folder’s permissions are set to prevent everyone from accessing the folder, even users with Administrator permissions. Double-click the folder and you’ll see an error message saying the “location is not available” and “access is denied.” This is normal. That’s because Windows uses this folder for certain system-level features. The permissions are set to prevent users—and programs without the appropriate permissions— from tampering with the files inside and interfering with important system functions. So, What is if for? Among other things, Windows stores System Restore points in the System Volume Information folder. In the, very likely, event that Windows messes up and you have to return to a previous time and date,

February 2017

the information that you need has to be stored somewhere and it is stored here. You can, or course, reduce the amount of information being stored on the folder and therefore save a little bit of disk space, but with Hard Drives being a Terabyte (1000-ish Gigabytes = over 222,222 DVD disks worth of information) and larger, there doesn’t seem to be a good reason to do so! So, Can I Delete the Folder? I don’t like Microsoft anything BUT I strongly suggest that you DON’T delete the System Volume Information folder. On NTFS-formatted drives, Windows won’t normally let you access this folder, much less delete it. On exFAT or FAT32formatted drives, you can choose to delete the folder—but Windows will just recreate it in the future, since it needs it. Windows stores important system data here, and you should leave the folder alone. Don’t attempt to change the permissions on the folder to delete it. If the System Volume Information folder is using a lot of space, reduce the space allocated to System Restore in Windows. If seeing the folder bothers you, just set Windows to hide hidden files and folders. Be warned, on the occasions that I have done this, Windows has had a minor seizure trying to put ‘Right’ what I have done – You have been warned! Everything that goes in my articles is my personal opinion. How good an opinion? Read the open part of the article for my experience and qualifications and ask “How many others are there like Trev?” Hope you have a trouble free week.

All you need to know

Fans hit back at Super Bowl body shamers

Cruel: Most of America was watching in awe as Lady Gaga brought down the house during her epic 12-minute halftime show during the Super Bowl on Sunday - but some trolls were quick to criticise the star’s body as she took to the stage But, Gaga’s fans - branded her Little Monsters - were quick to jump to her defence, taking to Twitter to praise the singer for promoting a natural look and embracing her beauty. The support started with: ‘Gaga got that meat on da bones I love.’

Chloe Goodman shows off her physique Chloe pause for thought Looks Great!!!

I’m sure we all, at times anyway, find ourselves being concerned about the comparatively modern threat from jihadists or other extremists, who seem determined to destroy our fairly comfortable way of life, based as it is on Christian principles. But how many of us, I wonder, realise that this is in fact no new phenomenon, but one that has repeatedly manifested itself through various phases of religious intolerance over hundreds, if not thousands of years. So, at the recent tenth anniversary Service at Aljambra, which coincided with the commemoration of the conversion of St Paul, we remembered that even the worst of terrorists is not without hope. So Saul, we’re told, had set off from Jerusalem on his 150 mile trip to Damascus ‘breathing out threatenings and slaughter’ against this faith, determined to exterminate any Christians he encountered, yet arrived a few days later a completely changed man, ready to share his new-found faith with any who’d listen. What a test of Christian love and faith for a man called Ananias, who from being one of Saul’s primary targets, was now required to welcome and baptise his former enemy. Small wonder the Bible tells of his questioning if God really appreciated the danger Saul posed. Yet reassured,

Ananias obeyed, and through his incredible bravery in meeting and welcoming him, Saul became St Paul, the greatest of all Christian missionaries.

Quite a challenge, I think for all of us these days. For whilst we’re understandably concerned at the evil being perpetrated by so many modern-day terrorists and the horrors they constantly enact, yet we must never entirely write any one of them off, but pray for them as misguided instead. For none are actually worse than Saul of Tarsus. None that are beyond the love of Christ. So the question for me is whether I could be as forgiving and as ready to trust God as Ananias was. For he, utterly unknown apart from this one incident, must be one of the greatest exponents ever of Christian love. Kim’s Rage Angry: Phillip Schofield and Kim Woodburn came to blows as he quizzed her on her behaviour in the CBB house and she accused the ‘biased’ presenter of ‘having no idea what he was talking about’ When Coleen was asked if there was anything she’d like to say to Kim, Coleen smiled and said, ‘No…’ Kim

replied, ‘I feel the same way dear’... And viewers could hear Linda Robson say, ‘No one likes a sore loser love!’ When Phillip asked what she thinks when she looks back at some of the footage, Kim said, ‘I look back with sadness that it came to that and I said those things, but I’m not sorry I said them.

Wowzers! Chloe Goodman was illustrating just how she made her name as she strutted her stuff on a Tenerife holiday on Sunday, looking incredible as she went Chloe has long-tried to forge a career in TV, after a stint on EOTB’s inaugural series in 2014, before returning in last year’s fifth season, while also appearing in Celebrity Big Brother in 2015. While the brunette beauty has taken a break from TV screens, she is enjoying a bevy of holidays in her career interim - with her Tenerife break just one of many.

Sir Bradley launches acting career Sir Bradley Wiggins shunned the controversy surrounding his stint on the Channel 4 show, as he revealed his hope to launch an acting career after he was approached for a role in EastEnders. The 36-year-old Olympian cyclist spoke to Daily Star about his next career move, as he divulged that his future could lie in television. Bradley bravely decided to compete on The Jump on Sunday, despite suffering a leg injury just one day before. Bradley explained: ‘I’d like an acting role. I got asked to be in EastEnders. A lot of things like that in the past I’ve turned down because I just didn’t have time. But now I’ve got time on my hands I can do all those sorts of things.’ Channel 4 viewers instantly took to Twitter, with some expressing their disapproval, while others branded Bradley a ‘legend’ after his cheeky comment.

Housing law targets owners of empty properties

A draft law currently going through the Balearic regional legislative process aims to force “large holders of property” to make them available for rent. One of the more contentious aspects of the bill is that it intends to force landlords who own ten or more empty properties to offer them for long-term rental, to help ease the housing shortage on the islands. The Insular Council of Ibiza is demanding it be reduced to five. This draft law has run into a lot of opposition from different quarters, and I’ve been asked if it might affect second-home owners with holiday-homes in Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera. If they don’t use their

properties, or do so only occasionally, might they be forced to offer them for long-term rent? The answer is no. This is what Will Besga, head of legal firm Mallorca Law, has to say about the bill: It is not yet in force, we don’t know the final text, and there will be appeals in courts. The aim of the bill is to go against banks, who have large numbers of repossessed properties Most expat or local holders are not large holders of property, and if there are any, in all likelihood they will have them as an investment and hence rented out In two years we will have elections, and in all

probability the opposition will win them, who will then proceed to repeal this, and many other laws. This draft law, called the Llei d’Habitatge (del Govern Balear) in Catalan, is not to be confused with the Balearic draft Tourism law (Llei del Turisme), which is also going through the legislative process at the moment. The Tourism bill does have implications for foreign owners of property in the Balearics, but just like the Housing bill, the final text is not yet known, and if and when it does become law, it could be repealed in a few years time.

Grow your own Pineapples at home

Healthy, attractive pineapple

1. Get your favourite pineapple from the local market or supermarket. Cut off the crown from the top of the fruit and set aside. Eat the rest of the fruit as you normally would. 2. Allow the bottom of the crown to dry out for a day or two. 3. Plant in sandy well-drained soil in a sunny location. 4. Water weekly in the beginning. Pineapples, like most bromeliads, prefer water in their vase-like tops, but do not need much water when established. They can get by on very little. Once the young plant is established, pour a cupful of well-balanced diluted water soluble liquid fertilizer into the top of the plant monthly. Pineapples take up a lot of their nutrition through their leaves, and the first few months after planting they rely only on their leaves.

Landscape Design For Your Garden

HOUSE CLEARANCE BAR CLEARANCE

Make a list of needs and wants. Do your kids need a play space? Do you want to grow vegetables? Would your family gather on a patio? Do some very rough sketches of the yard with thoughts of where you want to place things; it’s a great organizing principle for landscape design for beginners. Study the sun and wind patterns. You might want to place a patio on the west side of the house, but it will get lots of afternoon sun, which means

dinnertime in August won’t be relaxing, just hot. Your design should take into account what the sun and wind do at different times of the day and year. Live with it for a while. Coming to quick conclusions about your yard can lead to choices that don’t work in the long term. Part of creating a landscape is slowly developing a plan and enjoying the process. From your master plan, start with a small flowerbed.

Your home may have problems that you’re simply not aware of, such as a faulty furnace or a foundation leak, and these issues could be discovered during a home inspection and ruin a sale — unless you’re willing to adjust your selling price or pay for the repairs. dangers. It’s not just about the value of your home. It’s good to know how your home’s appliances are functioning so your family is not suddenly without heat on a cold winter day. Even if your home is in top shape, it doesn’t hurt to consider upgrades like new energy-efficient windows and doors that will look great and cut your hydro bills. Also consider landscaping, or at least getting rid of any invasive weeds that are taking over your garden. If you’re looking for

the highest return on investment from renovations, look to the kitchen and bathrooms first — because that’s probably where your guests and potential buyers will look first. Maintenance is generally cheaper than fixing appliance breakdowns, or foundation and well repairs from tree roots and other unexpected problems. So make sure you have an expert look at your property regularly, not just at the last minute before you sell.

Maria of Alqueria

Manuela looked Antonio Poyato straight in the eyes, jutted out her chin and let forth a heartfelt stream of abuse. Antonio staggered backwards under the force of her words, he was sure he didn’t deserve such an outburst but replied with the same venom as he received. Manuela changed tactics and instead of hurling verbal abuse hurled something more tangible in the form of a ornamental paperweight containing a not very convincing model of the Eiffel Tower. It was however sufficient to floor Poyato and render him unconscious. The rest of Alqueria were equally at each other’s throats but this was not the usual barrio rivalry, a bad moon had risen and chaos reigned. Those who were once close friends were no longer on speaking terms and hostilities between the two barrios escalated to a state of overt warfare. The situation was such that a barrier had to be built separating the two factions. Even this was fraught with disagreement and violence, so much so that neither side would cooperate in the building of the ‘wall’. The only solution was to build two walls some hundred millimetres apart but following exactly the same course. Construction was slow as flak jackets and hard hats made mobility difficult. As the stone and fist throwing was at their peak an apparition appeared in the midst of the turmoil. It was in

viewpoint

the form of a woman, Maria, no overly tall but very, very pretty and appealing, Antonio Poyato fell immediately in love her. Her presence seemed to reassure the wayward people of Alqueria. She assembled the entire village and spoke of compassion and fraternity, she spoke with reason and understanding and she touched the very souls of every Alquerian. Friends became friends once more and the bar La Casa Devante started admitting those from the Newcomers’ Barrio. Manuela apologised to Poyato and Loco Paco allowed little boys to take Bengy, his pet dung beetle for walks. The walls were de-assembled and a pretty pink picket fence with plenty of flowers was erected with gates ever fifty metres. A miracle had happened with peace and harmony the order of the day. People smiled and slapped one another on the back, even the evil Rodriquez gave sweets to little children and stopped trying to murder Manuela. The Village slept soundly under the new regime. Morning dawned with stones breaking the freshly repaired windows, Manuela once more stalked Poyato with sharpened machete and the picket fence was trampled underfoot by energetic rioters. Maria had to return to Madrid on domestic business. She never returned to Alqueria nor did peace and harmony which was never mentioned again.

Power

The sun was just beginning to yawn and look at its watch ready for leaving the sky and going to bed for the night when we returned home to a powerless house. Acting on previous experience I beat a path immediately to the fuse box, but all the little handles were in the correct positions – So now what? Again acting on previous experience I rang Tall Andy the Electrician. He had barely answered when the signal disappeared - The geography of Limaria disapproves of mobile phones, and will only provide a signal when all the stars are in alignment, which they weren’t! I moved a few yards and tried again. ‘You’ve got no credit’, gloated the phone. ‘Can’t help’. It added with indifference before turning black. I tried on Pete’s little old stupid phone, which is much less temperamental. ‘You’ve got no credit.’ It stated flatly, and went black. I could try the satellite phone– if only we had electricity! Then Barbara appeared in our garden. ‘We’ve got no power, may I borrow your phone?’ I queried anxiously. Barbara’s phone was a bit more specific. ‘You’ve got enough credit for one minute.’ It warned. A minute was enough. Tall Andy issued instructions. ‘Look in the box outside, push the button, and call me back if it still doesn’t come on.’ ‘I can’t. We’ve got no credit.’ With that Barbara’s phone gasped its last. We surveyed the impenetrable box – we had no key. Enter Stephen

clutching some long nosed pliers. With a combination of tact and digital strength he mastered the door, and we pushed the button. Nothing! As eventide advanced I set out to find candles and the Camping Gaz – we would survive; we had candles, the fire was laid, and we could cook a supper, as long as we were not expecting a full roast or guests. Malcolm then joined the party, bearing a thermos of hot water. ‘Have you pushed the button?’ He enquired. He departed down the drive to push the button again. At the same moment Pete discovered another button as yet un-pushed in the fuse box. He pushed the button at the same moment as Malcolm pushed the other button – and there was light! Tall Andy, despite our telephonic silence, used his initiative and appeared on the scene. Collectively none of us have any idea why the power went, but now that we have it back we have put it down to ‘Just One of Those Things!’

In Hanoi the best coffee comes with egg yolk

How do you take your coffee? With a little egg, butter and cheese? In the Vietnamese capital, that’s how it’s served at the famous Giang Cafe. On one of the endlessly busy streets in Hanoi’s Old Quarter, tourists and locals alike can be seen searching for the almost-hidden cafe down a narrow alley where the original cà phê trúng (egg coffee) can be found. On the menu is an array of drinks but all anyone is ordering is this beverage, in hot or cold versions. The hot one, served with the cup sitting in a small dish of hot water to maintain its temperature, is almost too thick to drink, so I use a small spoon. It doesn’t taste of egg – more like vanilla – and while I can taste the coffee at the bottom of the cup, the egg part is surprisingly light-tasting and not at all sickly, though certainly sweet. The cold option, laden with ice, is more of a dessert and tastes like coffee ice-cream. At the counter, collecting payment, sits Nguyen Van Dao, whose father invented the drink in 1946 while working as a bartender at the city’s Sofitel Legend Metropole hotel. At the time, milk was scarce in Vietnam so whisked egg yolk was used as a replacement. Other Hanoi cafes have attempted to imitate the drink.

GREAT FUN NIGHT OUT

Sliders, mini-burgers, mini-sandwiches: what’s the beef (even if there is no beef)? I know, I know: I’m calling something a slider when it’s not, officially, a slider. To be honest, I hadn’t heard of the term until very recently, when I started thinking about what to call today’s little rolls, so I’m claiming no authority on the matter. “Mini-burgers”, however, was never an option, because the word burger will, to me, always mean meat. “Mini-sandwiches” also didn’t work, being too dainty-sounding for what I was trying to name. The term slider has, in fact, been around for a fair old while, and was coined in 1920s Wichita, Kansas, when a restaurant chain called White Castle opened its first shop selling five cent mini-burgers. At the time, public trust in ground beef was very low, following the publication of Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle, which exposed the poor sanitation standards of the meatpacking industry, and White Castle’s idea of selling one- or twobite mini-burgers for a few cents was a clever way of luring customers

back. The gamble paid off, and how: public faith in ground beef was soon restored. The humble slider has been credited with kick-starting the US’s obsession with burgers ever since. Fish Slider 600g white fish fillets (halibut or pollock, for instance), skinned and cut into 8 equal 75g pieces 1½ tsp ground cumin 2 tsp coriander seeds, lightly crushed 1 tsp sweet paprika 3 tbsp olive oil 40g mayonnaise 1 tsp tarragon leaves, finely chopped 1 tsp chives, finely chopped Salt and pepper 8 sweet potato rolls (see first recipe), or another similarly light bun 2 beef tomatoes, cut into 8 even 1cm-thick discs 80g iceberg lettuce, torn into big pieces 80g good-quality tomato ketchup Put the fish, cumin, coriander, paprika and a tablespoon of olive oil in a bowl and mix to combine. Cover with cling-film and refrigerate for at least an hour. Before cooking the fish, get all the other ingredients ready.

Mix together the mayonnaise, tarragon and chives, and set aside. Heat a tablespoon of oil in a large frying pan on a high flame. Once hot, lay in half the fish fillets, sprinkle over an eighth of a teaspoon of salt, and sear for a minute or two on each side, until cooked. Remove and set aside, heat the last tablespoon of oil in the pan and cook the remaining four fish fillets. (You could, of course, cook all the fish at the same time in two pans.) Cut each sweet potato roll in half horizontally, and spread the base of each with a little mayonnaise. Lay a slice of tomato on top and season with a pinch each of salt and pepper. Put some lettuce on top and then a piece of fish. Finish with a good squirt of ketchup, pop on the lid, and serve. A true slider, made the White Castle way, is not just a small hamburger: it’s a very thin slip of beef, 5cm square, steam-grilled on a bed of onions with a pickle, which is then all piled on top of a patty. As for why it’s called a slider, it’s because of the way it slides across the griddle when steamed.

Ramen is the ultimate comfort food, but for something that seems so simple – it’s just broth, noodles and a few toppings, after all – it is quite involved. You could, of course, use ready-made noodles, failing that, use some thin Cantonesestyle egg noodles, which you can get in any supermarket), though any self-respecting Japanese domestic cook will tell you that you can’t beat homemade (it’s no harder than fresh pasta). The broth is by far the most important element in any ramen: it’s what gives the dish its deep flavour. For today’s chicken ramen, for example, you make

a simple stock, then concentrate it further. Don’t skip this second stage: it’s well worth the minimal extra effort, plus the smell of proper stock bubbling away in the kitchen beats a scented candle any day. Using the preceding recipe as a template, simply replace the chicken stock with a vegetable one and the chicken with fried mushrooms, and you’ll have yourself a glorious vegetarian ramen. Serves four. For the stock 1 carrot, roughly chopped, 1 onion, peeled and roughly chopped, 1 stick celery, roughly chopped, 1 clove garlic, peeled and sliced thin,

Taste of Catalan countryside day trip

Treat Yourself

One of the new culinary experiences for 2017 from Devour Barcelona is a day trip out of the city for seasonal food festivities in the village of Alella. After visiting a Catalan bodega to sample local wines, guests indulge in the key event: an

alfresco feast consisting of calçotada – that’s fire-grilled spring onions dipped in romesco sauce – followed by a main course of grilled meat. Calçotadas are a regional winter food tradition “rooted in friendships and families”.

100g fresh ginger, peeled and sliced thin, 120g spring onions, 100g shiitake, mushrooms, 3 litres water. For the cooked topping 400g mushrooms (shimeji, enoki, shiitake, king oyster and oyster, ideally). 25g butter. Salt and pepper. Put the carrot, onion and celery in an oven tray and roast at 180C/350F/gas mark 4, until golden. Tip into a large pot, add all the other stock ingredients, bring to a low simmer, and leave to bubble gently, skimming occasionally, for two hours. Sauté the mushrooms in butter, then season to taste.

Mallorca’s mystery pastry

At Palma airport, sharp-eyed visitors may be perplexed by the mysterious hexagonal boxes many people are carrying. They’re not for odd-shaped hats, but ensaïmadas Mallorquina, the Balearic island’s unique pastry. This spiral of dough is thought to date back to

the 17th century when it was fiesta food, but its exact origins are unknown. Some people believe its coiled shaped was inspired by Moorish turbans, or that it has Jewish roots, influenced by the Sephardic pastry bulemas, even though it contains lard, or saïm, which gives it its name.

Imagine a brioche crossed with a croissant, and biting through a slightly crunchy exterior to layers of light, flaky pastry. Small ones are eaten for breakfast, often with a cup of chocolate so thick you could stand your spoon up in it, at cafes such as Palma institution Ca’n Joan de S’aigo.

Our meeting place is in the “Centro Social Rooms”, Plaza San Andres, Calle Antimo Illescas, off Calle Comunidad Valenciana, in Almoradi. (Calle Comunidad Valenciana is the road that the “ Cortes theatre” is in. With the theatre on your left, continue along Calle Comunidad Valenciana and the Plaza is opposite the 7th turning on the left, before you get to the school crossroads. Once you are in the plaza San Andres the “Centro Social Rooms” are on the right hand side and entry is via a door next to “The Bar” with blue awnings outside.) The club activities will include social events, club lunches and evening meals in and around the local area, with guest speakers at meetings and entertainment when possible. We will also try to associate ourselves with other local clubs that hold other events including coach trips and anything that may be of interest to members. APAH are appealing for a long-term foster home for a very needy cat. Heidi has been in APAH’s care since 2010. She is a mature, very affectionate cat with a life-long medical condition. It isn’t contagious and is kept under control by medication; which she is well used to and takes without a problem. Her medical needs will be maintained by APAH, but she needs a loving home for her later years.

Sally is just 8 months old and had been discarded by the people she thought would protect her. She was being bullied on the streets by feral cats and when we approached her with a cat box she immediately walked straight into it. She loves to curl up on a lap and will make a wonderful companion. Sally is vaccinated and sterilised. Call: 645 469 253 www.petsinspain.com info@petsinspain.info

This big guy is a real gentle giant. He is loveable and likes a good belly rub. He is good with people and in excellent condition. He was found wandering the streets trying to interact with people. He appears to have been well looked after, but has obviously been lost and with no microchip found, we do not know his owners. He is well house trained, is very good on a lead and when left to roam freely within boundaries. He would make an excellent family dog.

Travel

Time to visit New Zealand The north of New Zealand is subtropical whilst the south is temperate. The warmest months are December, January and February, and the coldest June, July and August. The weather in New Zealand can change unexpectedly as cold fronts or tropical cyclones quickly blow in. Because of this, you should be prepared for sudden changes in weather and temperature, particularly if doing outdoor activities. New Zealand North Island Highlights Visit a geothermal wonderland with bubbling sulphur pools and erupting geysers at Wai-O-Tapu in the Rotorua, Taupo & Central Region. Search for dolphins and whales cruising the beautiful Bay of Islands & Coromandel. Witness incredible views on the Tongariro Crossing, repeatedly voted one of the world’s Top 10 one-day treks. Take a campervan trip from Auckland to Wellington, stopping wherever and whenever the mood takes you. Treat yourself to an escorted coach tour, small group tour, with independent itineraries and day trips. Get the most out of this beautiful destination, whether you’re taking your time to fully explore a specific region or discovering New Zealand’s iconic sights around the country.

February 2017

Guide

Discover an unspoilt fantasy land

Hit the open road

Good to know

Discover spectacular scenery and charming towns as you drive along New Zealand’s open roads, traversing beautiful coastline, lush forest and majestic mountains. Motorhome holidays are ideal for families wishing to explore the country independently, at their own pace and with the flexibility to travel where and when the mood takes them. A self-drive tour is the ideal way to discover the unique wonders of this awe-inspiring country.

There is perhaps nowhere in the world more enchanting, nor more naturally beautiful, than New Zealand. From the dramatic mountains and forested valleys to the majestic ice floes and glacial lakes and from dormant volcanoes to rolling vineyards, your camera has never been so busy. You may even recognise some of it from the Chronicles of Narnia as well as doubling as Middle Earth in The Lord of the Rings. On first acquaintance, Athens is not a beautiful place – the scramble for growth in the decades after World War II, when the population grew from around 700,000 to close to its present level, was an architectural disaster. While its economic reputation has taken a battering, Greece remains a premier-league travel destination. Its incredible historic sites span four millennia, encompassing both the legendary and the obscure. Discover enchanting landscapes and unspoilt natural beauty with our family holidays to New Zealand From the secluded sandy bays, sub-tropical forest and geothermal wonders of the north to the spectacular sounds, magnificent glaciers and snow-capped mountains of the south, New Zealand boasts an abundance of mesmerising and diverse landscapes. Children will delight in discovering the magical backdrops for the Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit and the Chronicles of Narnia films whilst the whole family will be spellbound by this enchanting country’s astounding natural beauty, incredible wildlife and exhilarating adventure activities. New Zealand’s sweeping landscapes provide a stunning setting for a plethora of fun activities and adrenalin-pumping adventure sports. Whether you are happiest horse-trekking through the forest, hiking up a mountain and exploring fairy-tale caves or you prefer the thrill of white-water rafting, bungee-jumping and sky-diving, New Zealand will inspire you. There are plenty of activities for the whole family to enjoy together from skiing and kayaking to luging and zorbing.

Motoring Roundup SolTimes

Drop-Top Version of Super GT Features 580-Horsepower Engine The 8 speed Touchtronic transmission has been tweaked, with faster shift times promised. Likewise, the suspension setup gets alterations with re-tuned spring rates and damper internals intended to sharpen things up when the car is in sportier driving modes. Along with the convertible roof, the Vanquish S Volante gets the same aggressive design tweaks found on its fixed-roof sibling. Exposed carbon fibre styling details dotted around the car’s exterior and the material is used to fashion the new front splitter and rear diffuser. New quad-exhaust outlets poke out from the

rear bumper. More styling options will be available such as carbon fibre bonnet louvres, new 5-spoke alloy wheels and even graphics packs, while further styling tweaks are available in the cabin with satin chopped carbon-fibre trim for the fascia and new Filograph quilted leather upholstery. Performance figures for the Volante are to be confirmed but it shouldn’t be too far off the pace of the coupe, which cracks 0-62mph in a claimed 3.5 seconds and has a top speed of 201mph. Expect it to be priced a little higher than the £199,950 of the hard top Vanquish S.

Aston Martin

February 2017

Vanquish S

Soft top convertible roofed Volante adds more drama to Aston’s new 595bhp Vanquish S. Aston Martin has released the first pictures of the new Vanquish S in convertible form, taking on the Vanquish S Volante nameplate. While the convertible version of Aston’s flagship grand tourer was confirmed alongside the reveal of the coupe in November, this is our first look at the more powerful, muscular looking Vanquish without its hard top roof. Instead, it gets a retractable soft top. Under the bonnet the Vanquish S Volante gets an uprated version of Aston’s 6.0-litre

naturally aspirated V12, producing 595bhp. It also gets a revised intake system, which Aston says creates stronger power delivery further up the rev range.

Arrives this April in the US

In terms of performance, the Vanquish S Volante is powered by a 6.0-liter V12 engine that delivers 580 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. The powertrain is mated to an eight-speed Touchtronic III automatic transmission. The Super GT is able to go from 0 to 60 miles per hour (mph) in 3.5 seconds and attains

a top speed of 201 mph. Meanwhile, standard features include automatic temperature control, heated and memory front seats, a laminated windscreen with a noiseinsulation layer and a rear parking assist camera. There is also a Bang & Olufsen 13-speaker audio system and the AMi III infotainment system.

Michelin’s new PS4S performance tyre

Michelin’s got a new performance tire out. Called the Pilot Sport 4S (PS4S), it’s a direct replacement for the company’s current Pilot Super Sport (PSS) and Pilot Sport 2 (PS2) tires, and it’s very good. The funny thing is that, in a way, it may be too good. High-performance tires go on performance cars; sports cars, muscle cars—nowadays even SUVs. Since time began, they have been designed with one overriding goal in mind: more

grip. Michelin says that in independent testing in Germany against five top ultra-high-performance tire competitors, the PS4S ranked first in wet braking, dry braking, and dry lap times. In fact, the PS4S was 1.72 seconds faster than its closest competitor on the 1.6-mile test track. Extrapolate that to the 8.4-mile track at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the difference would be about 9 seconds per lap.

It is understood that Berahino tested positive for a recreational drug. “We are aware of it clearly - there was an FA disciplinary matter and Saido had an eight-week suspension, I believe,” Hughes said.

Woods quits from Dubai

Tiger Woods has withdrawn from the Omega Dubai Desert Classic ahead of his second round at Emirates Golf Club. The 41-year-old American, who was playing in his second comeback tournament, has pulled out because of a “bad back”. In Thursday’s opening round, Woods carded a five-over-par 77 which did not include a single birdie and left him outside the top 120.

professional football. The 38-year-old, who left New York City at

the end of last year, has decided to “begin the next chapter” after a 21-year career despite offers of a contract from Premier League clubs. Lampard retires having won 106 England caps and scored more than 300 career goals - 211 of them during a 13-year spell with Chelsea that saw him become the club’s record scorer. He had spells with West Ham and Manchester City before leaving for the US in January 2016.

Wenger tried to sign N’Golo Kante

Arsene Wenger has revealed his admiration for N’Golo Kante and admits he tried to sign the Frenchman twice. Wenger says he was interested in signing Kante when he played for French club Caen, and again at Leicester. Kante has played a key role in Chelsea’s rise to the top of the table this season and appears well placed to collect a second

Premier League medal in May. “We cannot explain everything - transfers are transfers - but it is quite obvious when you look at where he has gone. “I believe Kante has had a huge impact. It’s no coincidence Chelsea are where they are and Leicester did what they did last season said Wenger”

Spain’s Jon Rahm wins maiden PGA Tour title

Spain’s Jon Rahm won the Farmers Insurance Open to claim his maiden PGA Tour title at just the 12th attempt. The 22-year-old sunk a 60ft-putt for an eagle on the 18th, as he became the youngest ever winner of the tournament at Torrey Pines in San Diego. The world number 137 also had an eagle

on the 13th to card a seven-under-par 65 and finish on 13 under, with American Charles Howell and Chinese Taipei’s Pan Cheng-Tsung on 10 under. England’s Justin Rose finished fourth. The Olympic champion had led at the halfway stage of the tournament and carded a two-under 70 to finish on nine under

and tie with Americans Keegan Bradley and Pat Perez. Rahm turned professional just seven months ago and the victory guarantees him entry to this year’s biggest tournaments. He moved to the United States in 2012 and learned English by listening to rap music.
