the threat of yet more strikes disrupting flights in western Europe is urged to add their name to the document. French ATC announced strike action from 6 to 10 March 2017, with many passengers likely to be affected. Eurocontrol in Brussels says the Brest and Bordeaux control centres will be affected from 5am on Monday until 7pm on Friday, with the action in the south of France running from 5am on Tuesday until 5am on Friday. There will also be an impact on services overflying France, including links from the UK and Italy, Switzerland and Spain and flights between Britain and the Canary Islands.

Ryanair has been forced to cancel 45 flights on Monday, including services to and from Madrid, Barcelona and Málaga, and has joined other airlines in setting up a petition which will be sent to the French government and the European Commission.

The petition requests that the continual disruption caused by the French controllers should be stopped, and specifically that negotiation be used instead of industrial action, that controllers from other countries

Five-year-old rescued

A terrified five-year-old girl was saved by firemen after climbing out of seventh floor window in her pyjamas after allegedly being left home alone by her mother.

The confused youngster climbed onto the narrow ledge after waking up alone at her home in the Spanish Costa Blanca city of Alicante.

Her mum had allegedly left to pick her boyfriend up from the gym.

Footage showed the child crying as worried onlookers watched from the ground 70ft below.

Firemen laid out a safety net to catch her in a race against time before rescuing her in a cherry picker while colleagues guided them from the floor above after a failed attempt to break down the front door.

Local fire chief Adrian Garcia revealed afterwards the

ledge she was standing on was just one centimetre wide. He said: “The girl received medical attention afterwards although she didn’t have any injuries and we asked her whether there was a problem inside her home and why she had climbed out the window.

“She said she had woken up to find she was alone and got frightened when she saw she couldn’t get out the front door and chose that way out to reach the street.

“The ledge she had her feet on was only a centimetre wide. If her arms had tired as she was holding onto the window, she would have fallen. Luckily we were able to reach her in time. “I think she only became conscious of the danger she was in when she heard the sirens.

“When we reached her there were neighbours holding out a sheet below her and others putting mattresses on the ground.” The child was kept calm as a cherry picker edged towards her.

Big four Brexit talks

The heads of continental Europe’s biggest economies meet in the gilded splendour of the Palace of Versailles on Monday, seeking ways of strengthening an EU facing Britain’s exit and mounting populism.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande whose two countries are often described as the European Union’s “engine” - will be joined by Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and Italian premier Paolo Gentiloni.

“The idea is to try to give political momentum to the four nations,” a French diplomatic source said.

The meeting comes

in the run-up to celebrations on March 25th of the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, which founded what is now called the EU. That date, combined with last year’s referendum in Britain on leaving the EU and the rise of populist and nationalist figures, has triggered a wave of angst about Europe’s future.

The EU faces legislative elections in The Netherlands this month, followed by presidential elections in France in April and May. Germany, Europe’s biggest economy and paymaster, holds legislative elections in September.

Children Found Trapped Two children, aged 5 and 6, and their 27-year old mother spent the night inside a crashed vehicle in the Valencia town of Montitxelo, trapped with their father, a 36-year old man, who had been killed in the crash. An investigation is being carried out to determine what caused the tragedy, but the vehicle left the road and overturned in a field at night. It wasn´t until the morning that the vehicle was located.

When rescuers arrived at the scene they found the mother trapped in the vehicle, along with the girl, with the young boy outside the car in a state of shock.

Ozone Treatment

Dr. Careless Carlos had been hard at work, his first task, to train a medical team ‘par excellence ‘. In Alquerian terms that meant being able to differentiate between an intravenous drip and a bedpan, getting to this standard proved exhaustive and tested Carlos’s reserves to their utmost.

Carlos THEN opened an ‘ozone treatment clinic’ in Alqueria’s Calle Generalissimo next to ‘Cod Pieces R Us’, Barmy Bartoli’s extremely popular emporium. ‘Ozone therapy’ is an alternative treatment that increases the amount of oxygen in the body through the introduction of ozone usually by intravenous drip. It purports to cure many ills and gives the beneficiary increased vigour and a feeling of well-being. Carlos, ever interested in pioneering new treatments, some of which he is still under investigation for, intended to cash in.

Manuela was given the treatment free so she could act as a reference for the procedure and thus bring in clients.

Manuela however needed an anaesthetic before she would let Carlos anywhere near her and questioned why, when she woke up his hands were on her shoulders and he was breathing heavy.

The effects were similar as Remitroot when taken orally but they were immediate. Patients became completely intoxicated as soon as the blood flowed back into their systems. Likewise with the aphrodisiac effect, many patients didn’t make it out of the clinic. The treatment became popular with elderly gentlemen.

Something had to be done. In true Alquerian style it was decided to close the clinic and never mention it again.

Pete has an alternative language all of his own. It is not dissimilar to Cockney rhyming slang, but a lot more complicated and a lot more oblique; simply looking for a word that rhymes with the word in question will not always give you the answer for which you are looking.

I gave up. We drove into Mora Oil, got the card for the machine and positioned Henry ready for his promised bath.

He let go of my arm and promptly went to sleep. I had to count hopping rabbits for a good half hour before my recently awakened brain could find sleep again!

Vet jailed for killing wife

A Benijófar vet has accepted a 10 year jail term after he killed his wife by injecting anaesthetic drugs into her because “she did not want to live anymore”. 50-year-old Marcelo G (in a file picture from 2013), then chopped up the body at the Pet Care Veterinary Clinic in the town and had it burnt at a pet crematorium.

Prosecutors had called for a 15-year-jail term on a count of homicide, but agreed in a plea deal to cut the sentence, since the vet had already served four years in custody. Since the body was incinerated, prosecutors used the term that Marcelo G had killed his wife “using unknown instruments and procedures”. Marcelo G told the court if he had not taken the life of his wife through drugs, she “would have done it in a more bloody way herself”, as he claimed she had attempted suicide previously.

At the start of the trial in the Alicante Provincial Court in Elche, Marcelo G, confessed

to killing his 45-year-old wife, who also worked at his clinic, after giving two previous contradictory statements. He firstly told the Guardia Civil that she had committed suicide by taking an overdose, but last year changed his statement to say that he had been performing stomach reducing surgery on her but the procedure went wrong, and she died.

Defence solicitor Javier Caballero said that he totally believed in the innocence of his client, and that he had to follow his instructions that he had taken his wife’s life.

He claimed that she had morally blackmailed Marcelo G with the threat of suicide if he did not perform the stomach surgery that she wanted.

“He did not get any benefit from his wife’s death”, said Caballero in court. “If a client asks me what would happen to him if he killed his wife, I tell them not to do it and just go for a divorce which would cost around 2,300 euros”.

120 diners celebrating a baptism at a restaurant in a north-western Spanish town all fled the restaurant at once without paying, according to the owner. The Romanian diners, who had paid a deposit of 900 euro left the El Carmen restaurant in Bembibre as dessert was due to be served, Antonio Rodriguez said.

“It happened in the space of a minute,” he said. “It was something they had planned and they left in a stampede.”

The diners owe two thousand more euro, he added. Mr Rodriguez gave police the details on the reservation but said he held out little hope of being repaid, with authorities so far unable to contact any of the diners. The diners had consumed starters, a main course and 30 bottles of various alcoholic drinks, he said, adding that it was the first time in 35 years of working in the restaurant trade that he had ever come across such an incident.

Notorious Santa Pola N-332 Junction to get Warning Signs!

The Infrastructure Ministry of the Spanish Central Government has confirmed the installation of road signs to reinforce the warnings of the potential dangers of a notorious junction on the N-332 in Santa Pola.

The local council had requested action in January, wanting the installation of rumble strips and signs at the location near to an abandoned hotel at kilometre 88 of the N-332, where traffic crosses on a curve, with reduced visibility, in order to access and egress the town´s main through route.

The local council also wanted to divert drivers away from this junction, by recommending the use of the access road to the CV-865, which offers a much safer alternative than the current “black spot”.

The Ministry has declined the request for rumble strips as these are not compatible near residential areas, on account of the noise disturbance to

residents. They have also declined the request to provide alternative route signs, as this is not possible under the technical regulations of road signage.

They will however install signs warning of the increased potential danger at the junction, so as to make more drivers aware of the need for taking extra precautions.

The location is still part of a planning proposal to revise the junction and make access safer, with a substantial budget already prepared, but the consultation has not yet taken place as other locations have been taking priority. Following the most recent incident only last week, the local council is asking for the government to give a higher priority to this project in order to prevent other serious incidents in the future.

No timescale has been given for the installation of the signs.

Repair or Replace?

Filter Maintenance Proper pool maintenance is a must to keep your pool water sparkling and clean. One of the most important pieces of equipment to maintain is the filter. There are three basic types of filtration systems – Sand, Cartridge and DE. Whichever system you have, you will need to be sure to clean and care for your filter.

Sand Filters A sand filter tank is made of metal, concrete or fiberglass and contains a thick bed of special-grade sand. While filtering, dirty water from the pool comes in through the filter’s inlet pipe, which leads to the water distribution head inside the tank. While gravity pulls the water down through the sand, tiny sand particles catch dirt and debris. At the bottom of the tank, the filtered water flows through the pick-up unit and out the outlet pipe.

If the water flow is slowed by dirt and debris, pressure gauges at the filter inlet and outlet give the pool owner an idea of the blockage level inside. If the inlet pipe has more pressure than the outlet

Can you repair it instead for less? Probably. Is it worth it?

Here’s the deal with repairing pool motors. You have to figure out the actual problem first. Is it the capacitor, the bearings, an electrical short?

If you’re mechanical and handy and know your way around a pool pump, then it could be fairly easy for you to diagnose the issue and even repair it yourself.

If you’re none of the above, you will need to have a tech come look at it or take it to a motor shop – and that alone could cost you before any parts are even replaced.

You also need to find a repair person that you trust so you can be confident the real issue is being addressed.

Another thing to weigh out is the age of the motor and if it’s worth investing any money into it. Age is relative to where you are located.

A pump running 365 days a year in warmer climes is going to be “older” than the same pump with the same installation date in a colder region where pools are closed most of the year.

Generally, understanding water balance can also be one of the most confusing processes of pool maintenance. Because of its complexity, some new pool owners may not know everything they have to do

Here are a few of the reasons why having a balanced swimming pool is so important.

That sensation of peeling a mask off is unbelievably satisfying - and thing I’d entirely forgotten before getting my hands on GLAMGLOW’s latest drop. Why do I need vitamin B12?

B12 is involved in producing red blood cells, maintaining a healthy nervous system, and converting food to energy.

It also helps to regulate the immune system and mood, and control levels of the amino acid homocysteine, elevated levels of which are associated with heart disease. Most people who eat meat, fish, eggs and dairy products get enough B12. Vegans are advised to eat fortified food and take supplements.

How much do I need?

Adults need 1.5 micrograms (mcg) a day, the US National Institutes of Health advises

2.4mcg, and the European Food Safety Authority says 4mcg a day is adequate.

The US and Europe, but not the UK, recommend higher levels for pregnant and breastfeeding women.

A study published last year found one in 12 women aged between 19 and 39 were B12 deficient, despite consuming at least the UK recommended minimum intake.

What are the symptoms and causes of B12 deficiency?

Symptoms include fatigue, faintness, headaches, pale skin, loss of appetite, weight loss, pins and needles and a sore, red tongue. One of the main causes is the

autoimmune condition pernicious anaemia. Other causes are conditions affecting the stomach or small intestine, such as Crohn’s disease, operations such as gastrectomies (which involve removal of part of the stomach), and certain medications.

Researchers have also identified a gene variation linked to B12 deficiency. Long-term deficiency can lead to serious heart and neurological problems.

Am I likely to have B12 deficiency?

Studies suggest the prevalence of deficiency in the UK is one in 10 people

aged 75 and over, one in 20 aged 65-74, and lower in younger age groups – except for vegans, where prevalence is around 11%.

However, some say these rates are based on deficiency thresholds that are set too low.

The main test measures B12 circulating in blood serum.

Doctors can also look for enlarged red blood cells.

Newer tests are more precise but are not widely available.

Experts disagree about how sensitive these tests are.

“The blood tests are largely reliable,” says Catherine Collins, spokeswoman for the British Dietetic Association.

“There may be some people who fall within the normal range but need a little more B12, but I reject the idea that they need a lot more.”

Dr Ayan Panja, a GP in St Albans with an interest in preventive medicine, disagrees.

“There is much disagreement around the validity of the tests among professionals.

My view is that B12 deficiency is underdiagnosed, and can sometimes explain clusters of symptoms such as migraines, cramps, food digestion and sleep problems, dementia and depression.”

Health experts reveal the most terrifying superbugs

OFFICIALS have drawn up a list of the world’s most terrifying superbugs – branded the “greatest threat to human health”.

The World Health Organisation warns antibiotics are increasingly powerless to combat the

deadly bacteria.

1. Acinetobacter baumannii – which can cause serious lung, blood and brain infections 2. Pseudomonas aeruginosa – which can trigger pneumonia, urinary tract infections and bacteremia

3. Enterobacteriaceae – which is causes diarrhoea and dysentery.

And they say new drugs are “urgently” required.

Medics have previously revealed antimicrobial resistance poses a bigger threat than cancer, with the potential to kill 10million people a year by 2050.

If antibiotics lose their effectiveness, organ transplants, caesareans, joint replacements and chemotherapy will become too dangerous to perform.

Some 700,000 people around the world already die due to drug-resistant infections each year.

Experts came up with the

list by examining a number of criteria, including how deadly the bacteria are, how easily they spread and whether new treatments are already in the pipeline.

The list categorises bacteria into “critical”, “high” and “medium” priority groups, according to the urgency of need for new antibiotics.

The most critical group includes multi-drug resistant bacteria that pose a particular threat in hospitals and nursing homes.

Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, is a common bug that can cause meningitis, toxic shock syndrome, sepsis and pneumonia, among other deadly infections.

Last week we touched on the subject of ‘Hashing’ which isn’t the skills of growing cannabis! This week I want to continue with the subject.

First, what is the difference between ‘Hashing’ and ‘Encryption’ as both seem to be the same?

When you encrypt a file, the contents of the file are changed in a way that allows you to use a ‘Key’ that will allow you to be able to change the contents back to it’s original, human readable form.

When you ‘Hash’ a file (and a file can be a single word or a complete document!) the mathematics reduce the unique combination of letters (UPPER and lower case), numbers and punctuation to a single unique string of numbers and letters called a ‘Hash’. The unique feature of this process is that the Hash string is always the same length! This is good because the letter ‘A’ will produce a number the same length as this article will so it would be impossible to ‘Guess’ what the Hash represents.

So how do we go about creating the maths? Well surprisingly the maths itself isn’t difficult even though some of the steps might appear that way. I simple calculation I found is: (s) = left(sum_{i in text{length}(s)}

Spain is the second-best country for first-time buyers, according to a new report.

UK-based relocation service MoveHub compared 2016 property price data from the Global Property Guide with average salaries according to the Hay’s Group Global Salary Forecast to determine the best countries for first-time buyers to get a foot on the property ladder.

Of the 33 countries analysed, the United Arab Emirates topped the table thanks to a

nearly eight percent drop in property prices last year.

In Spain, a 2.2 percent hike in salaries against a 5.75 drop in property prices put it in second place behind the UAE and ahead of Greece, Singapore, and Switzerland in the top five ranked nations.

“Overall the report revealed that countries with the biggest property price hikes had unfortunately also seen the slowest growth in annual incomes, with some salaries in decline, whilst house

prices rose,” said MoveHub in a statement.

“On the other hand countries with the highest salary growth enjoyed more affordable property prices or even prices in decline, making them the best places for first-time buyers”. Spanish real estate is picking up after the bottom spectacularly fell out of the property market at the start of the global financial crisis and following an extraordinary construction boom.

Wild tulips have a vibrant charm

Tulips are a stirring sight.

But you’d never call them subtle. Little wild tulips, though, have a simpler and more endearing charm.

There are roughly 100 wild species, of varying form and colour. And after centuries of cross-breeding - mainly by the Dutch - there’s an abundant choice of small hybrids, too. They’re often scribed as botanical tulips.

The bulbs are on sale now and should be planted as soon as possible.

They give good garden value. If you’ve seen drifts flowering in the meadows of Central Asia, you’ll know what I mean.

Last to flower, Sprengeri, is scarlet until June. Most little tulips steadily increase sometimes even self-seeding - to form colonies.

They get by with little or no help and their aftermath dies away quickly, leaving uncluttered space for summer plants.

PYJAMA STRIPES Botanical tulips are lovely in a rock garden or border front. I grow several in stony, sun-baked soil among drought-loving plants. The same varieties would also be suitable for pots or planters.

Following on from crocuses, they extend the bulb season well into spring. And you can blend them with miniature

narcissus violas, pansies or forget-me-nots.

Some have decorative foliage.

Greigii hybrids have chocolate stripes - lovely backing for the cream, red and yellow flowers.

The most popular stripeleaved hybrid, T. g. Red Riding Hood, has scarlet blooms with black centres.

And the multi-headed form ‘Toronto’ carries up to three bright salmon flowers per stem.

Kaufmanniana, the waterlily tulip originating from Kazakhstan, has softer hues.

Tulipa Heart’s Delight is a dream in dark pink. More startling Stresa is scarlet and yellow.

In containers, use potting compost for bulbs. Plant them at two levels to increase flower power and, if you prefer them in a permanent bed, choose a sunny spot with freedraining soil.

I discovered Orphanidea last year and love its tanapricot outsides and orange interiors. I’ve planted it on a steep bank, where I hope it will naturalise.

Botanical tulips need little attention after planting.

Only a few seed freely, but most bulk up from sideshoots and a few produce runners enabling them to creep.

READER’S QUESTION My hydrangea did not flower this year. It lives in a pot, and has been happy for the past ten years. What can I do to ensure it flowers next year? If you have kept it in the same pot all that time, it has likely become root-bound. Turning it out of the pot after so long could destroy both container and plant. Try giving it a little help to see if flowering resumes next summer.

First, remove any aged, weakened or thin stems. In March, scrape away a layer of compost then scatter over slow-release fertiliser.

Top up with new potting compost and resume.

Thank goodness it’s almost March. The month I look forward to all year, as it is finally time to start my favourite of all gardening jobs, sowing tomato seeds.

But rather than just sticking to familiar red varieties, this year I implore you to try something that most people seem instinctively to avoid without ever giving them a go, delicious green tomatoes.

Green toms are rich in tomatidine, which studies suggest may have intriguing health benefits This group of tomatoes retain their emerald hue even when fully ripe, but contrary to what you might assume, they are also some of the sweetest, richest

and most aromatic types around. Keeping hold of their green chlorophyll means these fruit are still photosynthesising, churning out sugar, even once the fruit has been picked.

They also happen to be rich in tomatidine, a compound that some emerging studies suggest may have intriguing health benefits. Research at the University of Iowa, for example, found that in mice tomatidine was capable of not only reducing muscle wasting, but even reversing it.

The critters given tomatidine actually saw an increase in muscle mass, strength and exercise capacity, with similar results also being observed

in human muscle cells cultivated in test tubes.

OK, it’s still early days with the science here, but I can’t wait to see what future research may uncover.

If you want to give green tomatoes a go this summer, here are three of my favourite ones (I have tested dozens) to get you started.

Green Zebra Often described as an “heirloom” or “heritage” variety due to its fantastic flavour and quirky looks, this fella was really only introduced in the 1980s, which gives it all the vigour of more modern types.

Beneath forest green striped fruit lies bright, tangy, almost citrus flesh with a good old wallop of umami.

Green Grape I’d grow this one for looks alone, with beautiful, translucent, grape-sized fruit that look like they have been carved from jade.

A nice early-ripener with an exceptional tropical fruitlike flavour and very intense sweetness.

Think “classic tomato” with hints of lychee and (surprise, surprise) green muscat grape.

How to tile a shower

Assess the quality of your existing shower wall.

Step by step guide to tiling Tiling a shower wall is a skilled job, and has a different method to tiling the rest of your bathroom area. The existing wall: If you have old tiles fixed to the wall it will be easier to start from the beginning and remove the whole wall, right down to the stud frame. You may need to remove the ceiling and shower tray too.

If you are installing a new shower tray (or re-using the existing one) this is the time to put some waterproof membrane on the floor under the tray. This will stop any moisture that runs under the shower tray from going any further.

Fix a vapour barrier across the stud frame, from the bottom of the shower tray upwards, but not quite to the top of the ceiling. The gap at the top will give any moisture and condensation behind the barrier some space to breathe and disperse.

Without this gap you may eventually end up

with a rotting stud frame.

The new wall: The best wall material to use for your shower area is cement backer board. Used much the same as standard plasterboard, this board is water and mould resistant and a good strong base for your tiles; just cut it to fit the area, and then screw it to the stud frame.

Ensure you leave a small (⅛inch) gap between each board and a small gap between the bottom of the board and the shower tray. Seal the seams between the panels and the shower tray with decorators caulk. Cut the holes needed for the shower head and controls into the board using a hole saw or hole cutter.

If your newly boarded wall has left a gap between the new wall and the existing wall, use a suitable bathroom filler to tidy up any edges.

If you are going to tile over any of the filled gap, paint some exterior primer over the filler; this will seal the filler and also allow your tiles to bond to the wall.

Luxury Properties Heating Up

Driven by demand from international buyers, Spain’s prime real estate markets are poised to gain momentum during 2017 and beyond, as the country’s economy steadily recovers, according to a luxury real estate agency in Spain.

In its annual market report released Monday, Lucas Fox International Properties said that its sales across all regions were up 31% year-over-year in 2016, the biggest increase in more than a decade.

International buyers were the main drivers in the luxury segment, representing 65% of all Lucas Fox sales during 2016, according to the report. The British made up the biggest portion of foreign buyers (11%), followed by buyers from the Middle East (8%), Scandinavia (7%), France (6%) and the U.S. (5%).

Many European buyers turned away from London following the Brexit vote, looking instead at Madrid and Barcelona. Other non-European buyers, including those from the United States, Middle East and Asia, are increasingly taking advantage of the country’s Golden Visa program, which grants residency for certain property investors, it was reported.

Spain’s residential sales increased 14% to 403,866 in 2016, citing data from the National Institute of Statistics.

Spain’s residential properties have become more attractive as the European country shakes off the Great Recession triggered by the debt crisis in 2008. Last year, Spain’s economy grew 3.2%, becoming one of the strongest performers of the Eurozone’s four big economies, according to Lucas Fox, citing figures from International Monetary Fund.

In broader terms, the Spanish economy has recovered around 80% of what it lost during the years of the crisis, according to Spain’s National Institute of Statistics.

Spain’s economic recovery, in part, is attributable to its booming tourism. The country welcomed a record 75 million visitors in 2016. They spent an average of €800 (US$848) during their stay, according to the report.

“The growth of the economy, coupled with low financing costs, good potential for profitability from rents, and capital growth will continue to drive sales throughout 2017,” Alexander Vaughan, co-founder of Lucas Fox said.

Seasonal food

Samphire and prawns with butter and mace When I make this dish at home, I tend to use shrimps and eat them shell and all. But if you use larger prawns, you might find the “shell-on” approach texturally challenging.

Serves 4 marsh samphire 250g, coarser stems trimmed butter 1 knob extra-virgin olive oil 2 tbsp garlic cloves 2, peeled and thinly sliced chilli flakes ½ tsp lemon zest of ½, juice of 1 ground mace ½ tsp cooked or live prawns or shrimps 400g salt and black pepper freshly ground Bring a medium pan of water to the boil. Drop in the samphire and cook for 3-4 minutes, until tender.

Drain and set aside.

Heat the butter and olive oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat. When bubbling, add the garlic, chilli flakes, lemon zest and mace. Cook, stirring regularly, for 1-2 minutes, until the garlic is just beginning to colour. Add the drained samphire to the pan and toss well.

If you have live prawns or shrimps, blanch them in salted boiling water for a few minutes until they have lost their translucency and are cooked through.

Scatter over the cooked shellfish, add the lemon juice, season well with salt and pepper, and remove from the heat as soon as the prawns or shrimps are warm. Divide the mixture equally on to 4 plates and serve straight away with good bread and butter.

GREAT FUN NIGHT OUT

Poke, pronounced both pokee and po-kay, is a lesser known Hawaiian favorite.

This raw seafood salad, a cross between sushi and ceviche, is loved by both the locals and the haole (white folk) that come to stay. You can find fresh pre-made Poke at every fish counter in Hawaiian grocery stores and at seafood markets across the state. Locals often stop by the market several times a week for this quick and healthy lunch.

I have to confess, we made it a goal to test every Poke Recipe we could find during our time in Hawaii, eating it nearly every day. We ate Ahi poke, octopus poke, crab poke, oyster poke, mussel poke and several other Hawaiian fish varieties. Our favorite, by far, was the Ahi

Poke. Rich, tender, sashimi grade Ahi tuna dressed with simple ingredients to allow the essence of the raw fish to shine.

Ingredients: 2 large sashimi grade Ahi tuna steaks (about 1 1/2 pounds) 1 shallot, sliced (or Maui onions) 1/2 cup chopped green onion 3 tablespoons soy sauce (look for a gluten free brand) 1 teaspoon sesame oil 1 teaspoon chili garlic sauce 1 tablespoon sesame seeds Directions: Pat the Ahi tuna dry, then neatly cut it into small 1/2 inch cubes. Place in a bowl.

Add the shallots, green onion, soy sauce, sesame oil, chili garlic sauce, and sesame seeds.

Gently toss.

Serve immediately or cover and refrigerate. *For another variation, omit the chili sauce and add 1/2 teaspoon wasabi paste and 1 teaspoon honey.

You can also add a fresh avocado if you so desire!

Lamb Burgers with Feta Tzatziki spread

Kosher salt Pinch crushed red pepper 2 cloves garlic, finely smashed 1 1/2 pounds ground lamb

2 sprigs fresh oregano, finely chopped 1/2 bunch fresh dill, finely chopped 1/2 bunch fresh mint, finely

chopped Zest of 1/2 lemon 4 whole wheat pitas or 4 seeded hamburger buns Feta Tzatziki Spread, recipe follows 1 beefsteak tomato, sliced, for garnish 2 cups baby spinach, for garnish Feta Tzatziki Spread 2 cups plain Greek yogurt 1/2 cup crumbled feta 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar 2 cloves garlic, smashed and finely chopped 2 sprigs fresh mint, leaves cut into chiffonade 1 small bunch fresh dill, finely chopped 1/2 English cucumber,

Ingredients 250ml Guinness 250g butter 100g dark bitter chocolate, broken up 400g caster sugar 150g tub of sour cream or crème fraiche 2 medium eggs 275g plain flour 1 tbsp baking soda 200g white fondant Chocolate buttercream, for decorating Edible glitter, for the shamrocks Shamrock stencil, cut out of paper.

Method

To make this cupcake recipe, gently heat the Guinness, butter, chocolate and sugar together. Mix in the eggs and sour cream then add in the flour and baking soda. Beat so it’s smooth with no lumps.

Pour the mixture into 12 cases and bake at 160C, gas 3 for 18 minutes.

Top with chocolate buttercream and circles of white fondant. Brush the fondant with a little water then use a shamrock stencil, which you can easily make yourself using a small square of plain paper, as a guide for your glitter shamrocks.

Chorizo-and Goat Cheese-Stuffed Peppers.

24 baby sweet red, orange, and yellow peppers,8 ounces soft Mexican chorizo sausage, 3 ounces goat cheese, crumbled, 4 ounces cream cheese, softened. Garnish: chopped fresh cilantro.

Preheat oven to 425°.

Line a baking sheet with aluminium foil.

Cut about 1/4 inch from top of peppers to form a “boat.” Seed peppers, if desired, and finely chop pepper tops.

Combine chopped peppers and chorizo in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, 8 minutes or until chorizo is browned. Drain well, if necessary. Add cheeses, stirring until well blended. Spoon or pipe sausage mixture into pepper boats. Place on prepared baking sheet, and bake 15 minutes or until cheese melts.

Real Minestrone Soup

Serves 8 2 red onions, 2 carrots, 2 celery sticks, 40g butter or pancetta, 4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil, Salt, 200g potatoes, peeled and diced, 300g other vegetables: fennel/ peas/ turnip/artichoke heart/leek/ pumpkin, 200g savoy cabbage or kale, 120g tinned plum or fresh tomatoes (around half a tin). A large parmesan rind 400g cooked cannellini beans First serving for 4.

150g short pasta, such a

ditalini or mafalda, or rice, 2 tbsp grated parmesan, Second serving for 4, 4 slices toast, 2 tbsp grated parmesan.

1 Peel and dice the onion, carrot and celery. In a large, heavy-based pan, over a medium-low heat, gently fry these in the olive oil and butter (or pancetta) with a pinch of salt, stirring every now and then for about 8 minutes, or until soft and fragrant.

2 Meanwhile, peel and dice the potatoes, then add them

Form the lamb mixture into 4 equal patties and sprinkle with salt. Grill the burgers to your desired doneness, 4 to 5 minutes per side for mediumrare. Remove the burgers from the grill and let rest for 3 to 4 minutes.

Cut the pitas in half. Schmear each half generously with the Feta Tzatziki Spread. Top one half with a burger, then tomatoes, sliced onions and spinach. Place the other pita half on top.

Feta Tzatziki Spread Combine the yogurt, feta, vinegar, garlic, mint, dill and cucumbers. Season with salt.

Let sit for at least 1 hour at room temperature before serving.

Treat Yourself

Directions Coat a large sauté pan with olive oil, toss in the diced onions and season with salt and crushed red pepper.

Bring the pan to mediumhigh heat and cook the onions for 3 to 4 minutes.

Add the garlic and cook for 2 to 4 more minutes. Turn the heat off and let cool.

In a large bowl, combine the lamb, the cooled onion mixture, the oregano, dill, mint, lemon zest and 1/2 to 3/4 cup water. Sprinkle with salt and combine well. Make a little “tester patty.” Cook it and taste for seasoning.

Preheat the grill.

to the pan, stir and cook for 5 minutes. Chop the other vegetables, shred the cabbage/kale, add all these to the pan and cook for another 5 minutes.

Add the tinned tomatoes (resist the urge to put in more than half a tin) and parmesan rind, stir, then add 2 litres of water, cover and leave to simmer gently for 1½ hours.

3 Add the beans. Stir and cook for another 30 minutes.

If you find the minestrone is

looking a little too thick, or dry, add a little more water. Once cooked, fish out the rind and season with salt and pepper.

4 To serve, two ways. On the first day, serve half the soup with some short pasta or rice cooked separately until al dente; maybe swirl in some grated parmesan. The second day, serve it over toast zig-zagged with olive oil and sprinkled with cheese. Serve with lots of crunchy crusty bread.

SIMPLE TIPS

In memory of the much loved and admired Richard Vivian Jones, who sadly died in the Christmas week, of last year, 2016, a donation of 580 euros was made to the, Departmento de Nuemologia of Hospital Torrevieja on Tuesday 21st February.

This sum was made up from the monies collected at Viv’s Funeral, and a generous donation of 250 euro from “The Torrevieja Barbershop Harmonizers” along with a donation of 100 euro from “The Deadwood Stage Company” Viv husband of Judith, died after some weeks in Hospital of complicated breathing problems, namely Pulmonary Fibroses of the Lungs.

Viv and Jude moved to Spain 14 years ago were well known for their contribution in time and effort to many societies and charities.

He had been stage manager and an ardent back stage worker for several years for Campoverdy Teatro

This will be a first in Spain and will help develop both clubs and give the chance for everyone at the feeder club to get match experience as well.

Also this week we will be getting our new club shirts for training and the summer beach rugby tournaments.

Uber launches self-driving taxis Uber customers will soon get picked up by autonomous cars instead of those being driven by humans.

The company is rolling out a scheme in Pittsburgh that will see people call Ubers as normal – only to have a specially-designed, selfdriving Volvo come to pick them up.

There will initially be someone sat in the front seat of the car, making sure that it is safe as well as allowing it to satisfy regulations that at the moment prohibit cars driving themselves around.

And it will initially be tested in a specific area – though it’s widely-expected to roll out elsewhere in the future.

At the moment, Uber has more than a million drivers ferrying people around cities.

While it’s not said explicitly that it wants to replace them with robots, that appears to be its plan – and it has been working towards make it happen over the last year

or two. Now it has said that about 100 Volvo XC90s will be driving around Pittsburgh, picking people up.

Those customers will call their Uber as normal. When it arrives, they’ll get in and find that their journey is free, as part of their recompense for testing out the new robot taxis.

Previously, it was thought that Uber might work to build its own cars, similar to what Google – and supposedly Apple – is doing. But the cars are custom versions of the Volvo XC90, fitted out with technology to let them drive themselves and a person helping it out in the front seat. As well as acting as a safety measure, the engineer that will be staffing the car will also be able to observe and take notes about how the cars are used. And the cars will have a computer in it, taking measurements and recording data as the cars move along.

Range Rover Velar

Range Rover has released some teaser shots of its new Velar model and where it will fit in the current model range.

The medium-sized SUV will fill the gap between the more expensive Range Rover Sport and the cheaper Range Rover Evoque.

It has been named as the original Range Rover prototypes of 1969 and will be unveiled at a world premiere in London on March 1st.

With its coupe-like looks the fourth member of the double R clan will be an obvious rival for the current Porsche Macan and BMW X6.

The normal Autovia or normal dual carriageway’s have speed limits varying from 80 to 110kph while the Carretera Nacional - N or CN - prefix to road number have limits between 60 and 100kph.

Bolted to the front of that powerplant is a steel-trellis frame, borrowed in part from the Monster 1200 but adapted to this platform. Attached to the rear of the engine is a new, singlesided, cast-aluminium swingarm. It’s all wrapped up in brand-new bodywork designed to emulate the Panigale shape with a distinct road-going personality.

And lastly, suspending it all is either a Marzocchi 43mm fork and Sachs shock on the base model, or an Ohlins shock and 48mm Ohlins fork on the SuperSport S. Base model SuperSport A base version of the 2017 Ducati SuperSport. No seat cowl, you’ll notice, and that’s a Marzocchi fork instead of Ohlins. Yours for $12,995.

Info is displayed nicely, but it gets messy when you dig into the menus—easily my least favourite part of the bike.

A few steps closer and you’ll see a twocolor dash, with new switchgear inboard of the left grip, a two-way quickshifter and if you fiddle with the windshield you’ll notice it adjusts up about 2 inches with a gentle tug via a spring-loaded mechanism. The S model also comes with a seat cowl and suave, white silk paint if you so desire. SuperSport switch gear. Navigating the 2017 SuperSport’s dash is done by the left/right/enter joystick (which doubles as the blinker control) and the up/down toggle above.

Simple, and effective. As simple as it all sounds to bolt these bits together, Lead Engineer Guiseppe Caprara told me the project started around three years ago.

As Ducati preached, this isn’t a bike for a track attack but rather a casual track experience, and it was great at that.

Ducati says this bike tips the scales at 463 pounds, but it feels and acts lighter.

First Dubai Championships title Britain’s Andy Murray saw off Spaniard Fernando Verdasco in straight sets to win the Dubai Championships for the first time.

The world number one dropped his first two service games but recovered to win 6-3 6-2 in one hour and 14 minutes.

It is Murray’s first tournament win of 2017 and the 45th of his career, which will see him extend his lead over Novak Djokovic at the top of the rankings.

Dustin Johnson consolidated his position at the top of the world rankings as he held off a strong European challenge to clinch a one-shot victory at the WGC-Mexico Championship.
