SPAIN’S EU EXIT ON HORIZON SPANISH university professors and economists are calling on Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to come clean over its debt burdens as calls for the country to leave the European Union (EU) grow. And they say it is absolutely essential that the People’s Party-led government immediately produce accurate figures over the country’s GDP as debt burdens weigh on hardworking families. The average Spanish family is crippled with £118,000 (€136,000) in debt brought on by years of mismanagement, it has been warned.

certify the ‘official’ figures that the government gives. “The official debt is now at €1.1 trillion, but the debt is much higher. “Let me say that only a miracle will reduce that amount of debt, but anyway, even in that improbable event, Spain would have to give to Brussels its real total amount national debt figures. “This total amount of debt which has nothing to do with the dossier we have sent to the European authorities is published every three months by the bank of Spain under the name of ‘circulating passives’.

But leading economist Robert Centeno says the unstable administration led by Rajoy which has been in gridlock since the controversial election in 2015 is not being honest about Spain’s current economic conditions. And there are growing calls for him to disclose figures amid serious concerns Spain could be set to default on loans which cannot conceivably be paid off for half a century. Mr Centeno said: “People don’t really know what type of menace the national debt is for their lives. “The mass media in Spain simply

Rajoy, will not call early elections
Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy recently talked to journalists from media organizations representing LENA. Although the formal reason for meeting the press was to discuss European issues on the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, which established the European Economic Community, the questions also covered the national agenda. The following are highlights from that meeting. Rajoy, who had mentioned terrorism during the interview, made an additional statement following the attack to call on European citizens for “perseverance and a solid determination to defend the values of our civilization.” The leader of a country that has dealt with decades of terrorism from ETA first, then from Islamists, underscored the importance
of adapting legislation to the new forms of violence and radicalization, and for governments and parliaments across Europe to support law enforcement agencies. “And third, and this is the most important thing of all – and I speak out of personal experience fighting terrorism as interior minister – we need to increase cooperation among intelligence services.” said Rajoy. “We [in Spain] have benefited greatly from French cooperation, for which I will never tire of expressing gratitude. There is no doubt that if we were able to increase cooperation among member states, it would be easier to fight terrorism. This is one of our great challenges of the future, and one of the issues that the European Union must emphasize. Let’s focus on the real issues: immigration, terrorism, growth, jobs, and

let’s take a clear stand in favour of EU integration. The message that needs to come out of Rome is something like ‘Together forever’.” While Rajoy defended greater cooperation and integration throughout the interview, the union is now facing the unprecedented challenge of dealing with a breakaway member. Brexit is of particular interest to Spain due to the issue of Gibraltar, where a majority of people voted against leaving the EU, and because of the large number of British citizens who live in Spain and are now uncertain about their own future. “There is no good Brexit,” said Rajoy. “Brexit was not good news, neither for Britain nor for the rest of Europe. We need to do things properly, which means achieving the best possible relationship during Britain’s exit and in the future.
One of the victims of the London terror attack has been named as Spanish national Aysha Frade. The mother-of-two who was 43-year-old, who taught Spanish at DLD College near the scene of the attack on Westminster Bridge. It is thought she was on her way to collect her children aged eight and 11 from school she was mowed down by the terrorist’s 4X4 car. According to Spanish media Aysha was born in Britain and had Portuguese husband called John Frade. Her family hailed from Betanzos near
the Galician city of La Coruna. Several relatives are understood to be travelling to the UK. Tributes have been paid to PC Keith Palmer who was also killed in the terror attack. Security arrangements at Westminster are to be reviewed following the horrific attack. Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon said the review would look at whether current security arrangements are “adequate” and whether police at the front gates should be armed.

Japanese avalanche Eight Japanese high school students are feared dead, after they were caught in an avalanche at a ski resort. The avalanche occurred early on Monday near Nasu in Tochigi prefecture, 120km (75 miles) north of Tokyo. Eight students were found with no vital signs while more than 30 people were injured, Japan’s Kyodo news agency said. About 70 people including students and teachers from several schools are said to have been in the area at the time. Rescue efforts are under way but bad weather and heavy snowfall have hampered the operation. The children were taking part in a large scale mountain climbing event involving seven schools, local media reports said. The region has received heavy snow over the past two days and avalanche warnings had been in effect.

High-tech solution for diabetics
A Madrid-based startup has created a ground-breaking solution for diabetics due to be launched in September of this year. Jesús Arenas Latorre and José Luis López are the founders of Insulclock, a cloud-connected electronic device that attaches to an insulin pen, recording and processing treatment administration data and sending it to a smartphone
to generate reports, establish alerts and provide a record of insulation administration. Insulclock not only reminds people when their next insulin dose is needed, but can also send information to doctors, family members, or carers. The prize-winning project, set up in 2014 with a team of 18 people, now has the support of companies in the health sector, as well
as other public and private bodies in Spain. “The main problem diabetics face in dealing with the illness is constancy,” says López. “Each day you have to carry out exhaustive monitoring of your habits and dosage, a routine that falls out of sync in 68% of cases, because people don’t commit to it,” he adds. Insulclock is not an insulin pump, nor is it a plaster to measure glucose levels, explains Arenas. “What it does is monitor the amount of insulin you have given yourself and it then tells you the type, the time, and the

Spain will not agree to an independent Scotland staying in the European Union after Brexit — at least, not until it applies to join on its own merits. As the governments in London and Edinburgh prepare their battle plans ahead of a potential second Scottish i n d e p e n d e n c e referendum, both are paying careful attention to what happens in Madrid. Spain has long been the most vocal opponent within the EU to any kind of separate deal for an independent Scotland because of fears that allowing such an arrangement would encourage Catalonia’s bid for independence from Spain. To judge by the views
of senior MPs and government officials in Madrid interviewed for this article, neither U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May nor Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is likely to be entirely happy — or disappointed — with the noises coming from the Spanish capital. For the SNP, there is no getting away from it: Any hope in Holyrood that Spain might acquiesce to an independent Scotland remaining in the EU in the U.K.’s place despite Brexit is a non-starter. According to senior figures in the Madrid government, Spain is not saying it will indefinitely block an independent Scotland re-joining the EU but neither has it agreed this might be possible.
dose,” he explains. All data obtained is encrypted “in an independent server under strict security measures, because in Spain the law is very tough in this regard,” he adds. Patients can also opt to not have their information stored remotely. Aside from helping diabetics better control their condition, Arenas and López say the information acquired, with the appropriate data protection, will be of interest to insurance companies, hospitals, public health authorities, and private companies in the health sector.
The pair add that their model, which has been patented in Spain and the United States, has many applications including the treatment of respiratory diseases and fertility problems, or the regulation of the use of growth hormones or for the treatment of patients with chronic illnesses. The project has been backed by the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 initiative, which has just provided just over €1 million of a current budget of €1.4 million, while the Spanish industry ministry’s Neotec program has contributed €211,000.
Busy time for footwork dance
After the very successful Christmas show, ¨Roll Out The Dance Floor¨ which played to a sell-out audience, it has been possible from the proceeds of the ticket sales, to assist Los Montesinos Social Services, to purchase several wheel chairs and other aids for local people in need of assistance. There is no time for the students to rest on their laurels and it has been back to the studio for all the students. On the 12th March, International Dance Teachers Association examiner Miss Elizabeth Harris was flown in from the headquarters in the UK, to carry out examinations for Ballet, Tap and Gymnastic dance. The IDTA is a leading dance qualification body with over 7000 members in over 55 countries, defining standards across the widest variety of dance forms. They examine performance for both professional and non-professionals of all ages, developing skills and
professional practice to promote the love of dance. To prove dance is for everyone and you never stop learning, the ages of the students taking the examinations ranged from 3 to 74.Over the past few years the success rate has been high and the students now have to wait a few weeks for the results. TV NEWS………… Several reports in the papers of “illegal” TV systems being closed down – both Spanish and “foreign” operations ……… much of the issues seem to be about tax evasion but we all should realise that technically it is illegal to watch one country´s TV in another country ! Yes madness within the EU but that is the case.

There are several ways to watch UK TV in Spain but technically none are legal - you will not go to prison or even get a fine but we should not be doing it. One reason I am stressing this is that the TV providers generally only attempt to transmit in their own domestic country and it is often by “luck” that we – outside of the home country - can receive it ……… it is not a right. Often the signals we can receive are weak and unstable so if you get the odd “blip” or “hick” please be aware that it is not necessarily the TV system installer who is at fault. All TV transmission / reception is going to be by the internet in the not too distant future ………. There will be no traditional antenna or satellite transmissions ………. Satellites are just too expensive to build, launch and run and the traditional TV antenna route use frequencies that the mobile phone companies want –
and will get ! Many consumers have had really bad experiences with internet transmitted TV and there are a variety of reasons for that – if all components of the used system are of good quality TV reception will be excellent but there are many areas for problems to arise. Is the internet being used up to TV transmission capability – often “speed” is quoted as the critical criteria but whilst it is important it is by far not the only factor to affect viewing. Then what type of box are you using ……. Some are as easy to use as your existing TV system and some (Android springs to mind !) can show excellent quality TV but to find the channel you want to watch can be a nightmare and the procedure change on a daily basis. Then there has to be someone “pumping” the TV channels into the internet for you to receive on your chosen system – They are not “just available”. How knowledgeable and reliable is that initial source ……. Is their system stable and will they be around to fix it as quickly as possible if it goes wrong ? There are just so many variables to get right for good internet TV viewing and that is where a good knowledgeable TV installer should be used to assess your requirements , look at your existing equipment and internet and recommend a system for you ……… and be available to assist you in the future. This is not equipment to buy from a newspaper advert or a market stall. Too many household´s TV is , these days , an essential service – get it right so that you can enjoy it at its best. We at RAINBOW SATELLITES are available for a full range of advice on all things television. A chat on the phone , a house call and demonstration are available for the asking. Home Security
There are many advantages to owning a home security system. They help keep your family safe, let you focus on the more important aspects of life, and give you peace of mind. Here are some other reasons to consider a home security system: Protects Valuables The alarm alone is enough to deter an intruder. However, once the alarm has sounded, the police are immediately notified and dispatched so your home is kept safe at all costs. Helps Save Energy Nowadays, home security systems also include many home automation features. This system will allow you to monitor your energy usage and shut off utilities when you are no longer in the room. This leads to lower monthly bills and less wasted energy. Home Automation Convenience Saving energy isn’t the only advantage of home automation. You can change the lighting, temperature, music, TV, and control numerous other aspects of your home from a device as simple as your smart phone. Lowers Insurance Many insurance agencies give discounts to members who have a home security system. This is a great way to cut down on expenses. Fire/CO Detector Monitoring Fire and carbon monoxide detectors are vital features of any home security system. They can detect dangers that you can’t, such as invisible, poisonous carbon monoxide. As soon as the alarm has sounded, emergency services are on call to help. These detectors provide an indispensable advantage to protecting your family from emergencies that are usually out of your control. Remote Surveillance Remote surveillance allows you to watch your home at any hour of the day from any location. You can view the live feed from the wireless security cameras through an app on your smart phone. It can even alert you when people leave and enter your home – a great way to keep an eye on the kids whether you’re on vacation or just at work. Home security systems are an investment. The right systems can keep your valuables safe while saving you money in the process. They also give peace of mind and let you know someone will always be there in case of an emergency. Protect your family, yourself, and make life a little easier by adding a security system into your home.

Why use Homesitters?
to allow your pets to remain in their familiar surroundings, following their normal routines to deter burglars, squatters and vandals to guard against frost and weather damage to keep your home aired and lived-in, and to keep your garden maintained in good order to meet insurance criteria to secure reduced insurance premiums Pet sitting If you are a pet owner, you are probably reluctant to use kennels, catteries or other boarding establishments. Vets advise that pets are creatures of habit, happiest and healthiest when life is comfortable and straightforward with no surprises. Cats and dogs in particular may worry when suitcases appear, associating them with separation and, worse, a trip to the cattery or kennels. A dog’s natural instinct when a member of their pack goes away is to guard the territory until they return. Being separated from both the territory and the pack can result in significant separation anxiety, presenting in symptoms such as pining, loss of appetite, gnawing, kennel cough, diarrhoea and self-harming. Domestic cats may appear to be very independent but they too are territorial animals, attached to their home environment and frightened of unfamiliar places and smells. Most cats also appreciate human company – albeit on their own terms! Separation anxiety in cats who are isolated or left in a strange place can result in symptoms such as loss of appetite, spraying, scratching, hiding and excessive meowing. When you’re away, the kindest arrangement for your pets is to leave them at home in familiar surroundings, following their usual routine.

How To Stop Mosquito Bites from Itching
1 2
Contraceptive pill can protect against some cancers
Clean the bite area with rubbing alcohol, alcohol wipes, or plain water. Apply a home remedy, such as oatmeal, honey, or apple cider vinegar
Consider store-bought products. Wash the area with soap or anti-itch cream meant for bug bites. Consider applying some herbs, such as basil, or essential oils, such as lavender or tea tree. Try water and heat. Take a hot bath or use a hot compress.
3 4
For those who have a severe reaction to the bites and look as if they’ve caught chicken pox, apply an antihistamine cream or lotion.
Especially effective are ointments containing a combination of an antihistamine, analgesic, and corticosteroid, as this can relieve both pain and itching. Use a lemon or lime. Cut it into pieces and rub gently on the affected area.
5
Use your breakfast oatmeal. Oatmeal is renowned for its anti-itching properties, so make a small paste of it and apply to the bite area. Allow the paste to dry, then wash it off. Baking soda. Mix one tablespoon of baking soda with one pint of warm water, then apply.
Women who have taken the contraceptive pill are protected from some types of cancer for as long as 30 years, according to new research. Those who have used the pill are less likely to have bowel cancer, endometrial cancer or ovarian cancer than women who had never taken it, a study at the University of
Aberdeen found. Researchers also looked at the risk of all types of cancer in women who have taken the pill during their reproductive years and found it does not lead to new cancer risks later in life. The results are the latest published from the longestrunning study in the world into the effects of taking the
contraceptive pill. Established by the Royal College of General Practitioners’ in 1968, the Oral Contraception Study was set up to look at the long-term health effects of oral contraceptives. The latest study, led by Dr Lisa Iversen, relates to 46,000 women followed for up to 44 years.
Dr Iversen, research fellow in the Institute of Applied Health Sciences at the university, said: “Because the study has been going for such a long time we are able to look at the very longterm effects, if there are any, associated with the pill. “What we found from looking at up to 44 years’ worth of data was that having ever used the pill, women are less likely to get colorectal, endometrial and ovarian cancer. “So, the protective benefits from using the pill during their reproductive years are lasting for at least 30 years after women have stopped using the pill. “We were also interested in what the overall balance of all types of cancer is amongst women who have used the pill as they enter the later stages of their life.
Ways To Make Your Eyes Pop
1. If you have a hard time using soft eyeliner pencils, draw a thick line onto your hand, use a stiff eye brush to pick up the pigment and then apply to your eye. 2. Need eye drops but don’t want to ruin your makeup? Breathe air in through your nose as you drop them into your eyes. Your tear ducts will suck in the drops before they have a chance to fall down your face. 3. Use a flesh coloured liner on the water rim of your lower
lash line to make eyes look bigger and brighter. 4. Apply a shimmery champagne colour in the inner corner of your eyes to brighten your whole face. 5. Apply highlighter onto your brow bone. 6. Swap out your neutral black or brown liner for a brightly coloured one instead. 7. Apply concealer to your under-eye circles after foundation (not before) to better camouflage them.

Finding the perfect foundation, which gives even, lasting coverage without looking cakey, can often seem an impossible task. But now, some new bases are ticking all the boxes. Giorgio Armani Power Fabric (£40, selfridges.com) has a luminous finish that lasts, while the matte texture of Lancome’s Teint Idole Ultra Wear (£30, lancome.co.uk) is easy to blend. Estee Lauder’s Double Wear Stay-in-Place base (£31, boots. com) claims to last 15 hours. Face powders should add a glow to the skin while making the best of your foundation — the new Shiseido 7 Lights Powder Illuminator does just that. The palette (£40, houseoffraser.co.uk) includes seven shades with light-reflecting particles. The lilac colours balance yellow tones, the yellow-golds neutralise redness, the pearly hues add a glow, and beige evens the complexion. The powder also blots away shine.

Parents complain about tablet ban on flights
Parents have taken to social media to complain about how difficult it will be to occupy their children on flights after
it was announced laptops, tablets and other large electronics will be banned in the cabin on flights from
countries in the Middle East and North Africa. Giving a child a tablet is usually a sure-fire way to stop them from complaining or getting restless, but now parents will have to find other ways to occupy them on flights from those countries due to a new al-Qaeda terrorist threat. More than 2 million passengers a year flying on airlines including British Airways, Thomson, Thomas Cook and Easyjet will be prevented from taking devices larger than a mobile phone into the cabin. Parents have taken to social media to express their concerns about the new
restrictions. Theresa May’s official spokesman admitted that the restrictions will cause “disruption”, but said that they are necessary for the safety of passengers. The spokesman said: “Safety of the travelling public is our highest priority. That is why we keep aviation security under constant review and put in place measures that are necessary, effective and proportionate. “Over the last few weeks, Theresa May, has chaired a number of meetings on aviation security, where it was agreed new measures will be introduced with immediate effect.”
Cheese and Cholesterol Levels Love chowing down on a hunk of cheddar? We’ve got some good news for you. People who eat a lot of cheese do not have higher cholesterol levels than those who don’t, according to research carried out at University College Dublin. Current health guidelines recommend that eating foods high in saturated fats like cheese can increase your risk of developing high blood cholesterol, which is one of the main risk factors for heart disease and stroke. The findings of the new study indicate that those who eat large amounts of cheese consume higher amounts of saturated fats. However, the researchers did not find that eating large amounts of cheese led to increased blood cholesterol levels.
The analysis was conducted by academics at Food for Health Ireland. Scientists examined the impact of dairy foods – milk, cheese, yoghurt, cream and butter – on markers of body fatness and health in 1,500 Irish people aged between 18 and 90 years of age. An analysis of individual dairy foods found that cheese consumption was not associated with increased body fat or with LDL cholesterol. LDL cholesterol is a substance found in blood which helps the body to function properly at healthy levels. When there is too much LDL cholesterol in a person’s blood it sticks to the walls of arteries blocking blood flow, potentially leading to heart disease and heart attacks.

Investing in a dedicated eReader is a good idea
Keyboard shortcuts everyone should know
There are plenty of reasons why investing in a dedicated eReader is a good idea. They’re a lot cheaper than an iPad, for example, and they’re simply a better tool for the task in hand. They can also be lighter than a book, yet store hundreds of books, so you can read your way through a fortnight-long holiday just by taking your eReader along. Battery life is also much better on dedicated eReaders than phones and tablets, here measured in page turns rather than hours.

Apple computer users can substitute the Ctrl key for the command (cmd) key on their computers. Pressing Cmd + C copies highlighted text. Ctrl + V or Shift + Insert. Spain in for a ride as new multi-million euro theme park planned

The number of Spanish homes changing hands increased significantly in January, the latest figures show. Data from the Association of Spanish Notaries reveal that the number of properties sold increased by 16.8% on the same period last year. A total of 33,670 properties were sold in January, but while this represents a major increase on January 2016, it was a more modest 12% rise when corrected for seasonality. Spanish property prices also rose by 1.8% with the average property now costing
€1,355sqm (£1,174), but that figure does not really tell us much about house price data in Spain, mainly because it is “so unreliable”, according to Mark Stucklin, a Barcelonabased property market analyst and consultant. “The housing market really did get off to a good start of the year, according to the latest data from the Association of Spanish Notaries,” he said. Separate figures from the National Institute of Statistics show that Spanish property sales inscribed in the Land Registry increased by 19% in January.
Stucklin added: “Those figures are based on sales that took place a few months before, say between October and December, whilst the Notaries’ figures are based on sales witnessed in January, so their figures are timelier, and give us a more up-to-date pictured. “Whichever figures you look at, the picture is one of a sustained recovery in Spanish home sales and mortgage lending, with house prices rising in hot markets like Barcelona, Madrid, and the Balearics.”
Work will start on the park in 2019.
AN international theme park giant is to open a new multi-million euro attraction in Spain. French company Puy de Fou will funnel €140m into its newly revealed Toledo attraction park, which will be themed on the history of Spain.
Four thousand jobs are expected to be created through the new park, which is expected to open its doors in 2021.
“It will generate an extraordinary growth in GDP for the region and around 4,000 jobs,” said Emiliano GarcíaPage, the president of the Junta de Castilla-LaMancha.

Spanish Green Lawns, but choose the right type of grass! If you have chosen to lay turf, more than likely it is because you wanted an instant solution for a green lawn. Turf is not easily found here in Spain because its maintenance prior to sale is so high. Nobody wants to buy yellow or dead looking turf, so the grower has to constantly maintain its look with water and fertilizer until it is sold. When you lay your newly purchased turf lawn, this instant solution looks great but now immediately requires copious amounts of water EVERY DAY to maintain its lush green look. After the initial period, the watering (whether an irrigation system is installed or not) is skimped on or reduced, and the lawn suffers. Basically things go from great to not so great and eventually a very patchy substandard lawn is the result. Because of the expense of water here in Spain, some people at this point either give up and put gravel down, or concrete the area. Villa Lawn. Our grass plugs are a great solution for a beautiful garden lawn in Spain. They are not cuttings, but completely rooted pieces of lawn. The lawn begins modestly and cheaply with no failures, it’s NOT an instant solution, it’s like a good wine, it gets better with time. The investment in your lawn can start from as little as 4 euros per M2. After watering the grass plugs for the first three weeks after planting you do not need to water again

(extreme weather conditions permitting), thus eliminating the need for expensive irrigation systems. However after the 3 – 4 week point you may want to continue watering until the grass plugs join up into an established lawn. This greatly speeds up the timescale and the results from your investment. Because of the deep roots, our grasses are drought resistant and thrive in hot, dry conditions. The lawn actually gets better with time. Once established, our grasses grow slowly and need much less cutting. They do not propagate easily from seed and therefore we propagate the grass for you, and once it’s established we then transplant into your lawn. You don’t need any more than this for a wonderful green lawn in less than one season, and it can be much less.

Bring lagom into your home
This Swedish concept is all about enjoying a happier, balanced, and more sustainable lifestyle. With these expert tips, find out how to achieve a lagom-inspired interior and transform your home... Are you tired of your humdrum life? Do you want something new and fresh to bring into your home? If you’ve related to both of these questions, then it’s time for you to make a change! A good way to make a change is with your own home. Re-designing your space is a perfect way to have a more positive outlook in what has yet to come. Surely, having the Lagom life entails you to bring about change. And a
good one at that. Lagom is not just a style that you can have to make your home look better. It is a way of life. Bringing in this way of life into your home is all about creating balance. If you want to embrace this way of life, it’s time you decide what is better not only for you, but also for your home. It’s time for you to let go of the things that has been making your home less homey and more cluttered, and bringing in things that will make your home appear simpler yet more elegant at the same time. If you have ended the previous year with a whirlwind of thoughts in your mind, maybe your
home has contributed a lot to that. To start a new year with a clearer, more calmer mind, make a change in your home. Try to take on a much simpler design. Elegance does not necessarily entail complexity, and frugality does not necessarily entail being boring. Less is more is something that you have to start tattooing in your mind. Calmness and simplicity is now synonymous to beauty. Lagom is not only easy on your pockets, but it’s easy on nature as well. When you embrace the Lagom life, you are also embracing a more sustainable way of living. With a Lagominspired home, you are sure to conserve more energy, save more water, reduce waste, and live a healthier lifestyle. Changing the way your house looks will surely help you achieve the sustainable lifestyle you desire. An open, more spacious house, for example, requires you to use less energy and electricity by maximizing the lighting and fresh air. Always put into mind the three main ingredients for a more balanced lifestyle, happiness, frugality, and fairness.
Contemporary garden
Modern designs are fairly pared-back, so it’s best to avoid fads. Have clear reasons for everything you include. For ornaments and furniture, natural materials provide another contrast to the immaculate planting patterns and the crisp, white surfaces. Options include a driftwood bench, or even a well-worn trough. Lighting is absolutely essential for contemporary gardens. Good lighting is always about what you light, rather than the light fixture. Focus spotlights on elements
such as the battens, textured brickwork or the repeated patterns of planting to emphasise the design. Use repeat patterns in your planting to hold the garden together. A row of small trees, box bushes, shrubs or ornaments placed at regular intervals gives an order that looks good and has timeless appeal. Create contrast between the simple geometric shapes of lawns and paths and include some loose, blousy planting spilling out of the flowerbeds.
Decorate your home Grey is an extremely versatile colour that comes in many shades from oh-sopale to nearly-black. The trend has been to use only grey in a scheme for a few years now, but we think it’s time to mix it up and give a whole new and exciting look by teaming it with stunning colours from crisp white to grass green, and pastel pink to deep teal. GREY & WHITE Vanessa Arbuthnott dining room lifestyle image. You can’t beat crisp brilliant white with a mid-toned grey. It has a
fresh appeal that oozes sophistication and can be teamed with pale blonde wood (as can be seen here), with great results. The blind has a subtle stripe that has been carried through to the table runner and tableware. GREY & NAVY Pops of yellow give this grey and navy combination a spring uplift that creates a prefect look that isn’t too dull or too bright. Choosing cushions that incorporate both the navy and grey will bring the look together
whilst the yellow accent adds a zing to the overall look. Look out for textured two tone vases for a stylish finishing touch. GREY & TEAL For a completely different look, opt for a deeper pairing of colours. Here, not only has the chimney wall been painted in a chalky matt grey, but also the fire surround and skirting too. The teal is the secondary colour and it gives a beautiful contrast whilst adding depth to the scheme at the same time.

Buying a Business in Spain
The main points to consider are as follows: If you are buying a going concern, engage a firm of Spanish accountants to analyse the last 3 years’ accounts. If the business does not have at least 3 years’ accounts then query whether it has any value at all. Your accountant will be able to track receipts through the bank accounts of the business. It is not sensible to rely on promises of cash receipts. Be certain of the value of the business. It is easy to overpay. Take independent legal advice in relation to the structure that you will use to run the business. Will you be a sole trader, or perhaps a partnership? Will you form a limited company for tax reasons, and/or to limit your own liability? Remember, you will be providing services to individuals. While it is essential to contract public liability insurance, it may be wise to avoid personal liability altogether. Consider carefully your tax position. If you reside in Spain then you will become liable to tax in Spain for all of your worldwide assets. If buying a going concern necessarily involves purchasing a property, which is likely, think about whether your business will buy the property, or whether you will buy the property in your own name and rent part/all of it to your business. Either an independent Spanish lawyer who advises on tax, or a Spanish accountant, will be able to advise you well. Consider the market that you are hoping to capture. Are you expecting to build on the reputation of the business to date, or is your idea to change the focus of the business and attract people visiting Spain for a particular reason, such as fishing, or cycling, or another outdoor pursuit?
ESPAĹƒA........... QUITE SIMPLY AMAZING..............
Do your research Understand very well why the current owners of the business want to sell. There can be many reasons, but very often the main reason is that the business is not producing sufficient revenue. Again, be certain that the turnover figures presented to you by the seller are accurate. Whether you are buying a going concern, or buying a property with a view to using it as a B&B, above all else engage an independent lawyer to ensure that either: the current owners have full permission to use the property for that purpose and that you will be able to rely on that permission once you have purchased, or you will be able to make a successful application for permission to run a B&B at those premises. The process may well be longwinded and overly bureaucratic and may also be costly, but there is absolutely no substitute for this step. Whatever you do, do not invest your hard earned money without the certainty that you know precisely what you are getting yourself into. Buying a Spanish property or a Spanish business is a fairly straightforward step, as the seller will be more than happy to receive payment. Selling a property or business in Spain can often be very difficult indeed. So, in a nutshell: Be obsessive as to the detail of the transaction. Be certain that you engage specialist, independent advisors. Understand each and every step before you take it. Move towards the dream of a business in the sun, but do so cautiously and competently with advice.

Someone is protecting Maddie McCann’s kidnapper, detective claims
Security breach renders in-flight laptop ban useless
MADELEINE McCann could still be alive - but someone is protecting her kidnappers, a detective formerly involved in the case has sensationally claimed. Retired Detective Inspector Dave Edgar ruled out Kate and Gerry McCann as suspects in the disappearance and said “someone knows” what really happened. Mr Edgar spent three years hunting for Maddie, who disappeared from Praia Da Luz in Portugal in 2007. He told the Mirror he believed the girl, then aged three, could still be alive and urged anyone with information to come forward. He said: “I think that someone else apart from the perpetrator knows and that is one of the best hopes of getting to the truth, that someone comes forward and says what they know. “They can’t keep it to themselves and research has shown they always confide in someone else.” Mr Edgar said he believed the kidnapping, from the Ocean Club resort on May 3, 2007, could be sexually motivated - and feared, if so, the kidnapper could strike again. He said: “If the motive was gang-related child prostitution, there might have been more than one involved. “It’s the type of crime they cannot help themselves, certainly if it was sexually motivated.” He ruled out the McCann parents as suspects, as well as two high-profile suspects who have both since died.
Regarding Madeleine McCann’s parents, he said: “If I found any evidence against Kate and Gerry I would have given it to the police immediately. Kate and Gerry would expect no less. But I found no shred of evidence. “We obviously look at all factors – motive, preparation, opportunity – and there was absolutely nothing.” He ruled out convicted British paedophile Raymond Hewlett, who was living near the scene at the time. Mr Edgar said: “In terms of fitting the profile, Hewlett would probably come as close as you would get to a main suspect. “There was no hard and fast evidence because, if there had been, he would have been arrested.” He also ruled out Euclides Monteiro, a former staff worker at the resort, who, like Hewlett, has died in the past few years. Mr Edgar said: “Yes, he was a suspect but on the files that I saw there was no evidence that he was involved to the level that the Portuguese police thought.” The veteran detective concluded by saying he believed Madeleine could still be alive and urged anyone with information to come forward. He said: “Until such time that a body is found it is a live investigation and there is always hope. “If anyone confided in you, now is the time to come forward.”
The airport which is the main target of the Government’s ban on electronic devices has a security flaw that renders rigorous checks futile. After clearing six separate security hurdles at Istanbul airport, passengers bound for London Heathrow mingled in the gate area with newly arrived travellers who had faced no extra checks, The Independent has discovered. Starting at the weekend, the Department for Transport made it mandatory for airlines flying from Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Lebanon and Tunisia to the UK to remove laptop computers, tablets and e-readers from passengers’ cabin baggage. They must be transported in the hold. Professor Anthony Glees, director of the centre for security and intelligence studies at the University of Buckingham, told The Independent the ban “defies logic.” “If security is lax in any airports - which we know it to be in some more than others - then the answer is not to let anybody take anything electronic, not simply to single out laptops,” he said. “If you are going to keep your house safe you have got to lock it up, you cannot lock it up sometimes and sometimes not. “Terrorists will always go for the weakest link in the chain and this demonstrates a non-existent link in Istanbul, which means that the idea that this policy makes sense is thrown into the wastepaper basket.” Airlines introduce laptop ban on certain routes. Former bomb disposal officer Chris Hunt explains why size matters when it comes to the new ban on large electronic devices being hand-carried on to flights from certain terrorist hotspots around the world. The ban is based on intelligence suggesting an al-Qaeda plot to bring down an aircraft with
explosives concealed in consumer electronics. The airport most affected by the British ban, in terms of passenger numbers, is Istanbul Ataturk. It is the hub for Turkish Airlines, which has up to six flights a day to Heathrow, as well as two daily departures to Manchester, 10 a week to Birmingham and five a week to Edinburgh. British Airways also flies from Istanbul to Heathrow, while AtlasGlobal flies from the airport to Stansted. In total, around 2,500 people fly from Istanbul to the UK in a typical day. “If there is specific intelligence then the ban is justified - but in that case the airport should have been boycotted altogether. You cannot be half in and half out, half locked and half unlocked,” Professor Glees said. “Everybody has an interest in making airport security as good as it possibly can be and Turkish airports cannot be a weak link because we are all interconnected.” Istanbul airport already has heightened security. Vehicles entering the airport area are searched, and all passengers face additional screening before they reach check in. Passengers for the UK are now checked in at a separate area alongside flights to Israel. Besides the standard screening to go “airside”, three extra security hurdles have been added. The last, at the entrance to the departure gate, is a thorough hand search of cabin baggage. Any device bigger than a standard smartphone is confiscated and put in a special sealed case which is then opened on arrival at Heathrow. But as the heavily screened travellers were waiting to board the Heathrow flight, an entire planeload of arriving passengers wandered through what was supposed to be a securitysterile area.

GREAT FUN NIGHT OUT
Clean eating — filling your diet with nutritious and unprocessed foods instead of calorie-, sugar- and fatladen processed ones — has a powerful effect on your health. Diet is so important to your wellbeing that some doctors are even prescribing vegetables to their patients, no joke! Go online, though, and you’re likely to find tons of conflicting advice on what’s healthy and what’s not. The truth is that clean eating doesn’t have to be complicated, and it definitely doesn’t mean deprivation. Veggies form the foundation of a clean diet, and you’ll want to include them at virtually every meal. Make veggie selection a snap by choosing produce of all different hues: green, red, yellow, white and purple/blue. This ensures you’re not only eating several
types of veggies every day, which is essential for avoiding diet boredom, but you’re also getting a range of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients to nourish your body. Use a variety of cooking methods to keep your veggies interesting. Try this grilled asparagus, go for perfect boiled corn or cook up delicious butternut squash. Eating clean doesn’t have to mean going vegan, but you should consider swapping out meat for plant-based protein at least a few times a week. Protein-rich beans, lentils, soy and nuts all supply fibre and other essential nutrients like folate, which supports healthy blood flow. And eating soy protein in place of meat can lower your cholesterol. Use chickpeas — an
excellent source of protein — to add texture to salads, or to make your own hummus. Include quinoa in your diet as a cleaner alternative to pasta in in soups, or as the basis for healthy vegan dishes, like this delicious daal. Obviously, eating clean means nixing processed foods, but that doesn’t mean you can’t take some shortcuts to make your diet easier. Pick up pre-cut veggies and fruits at the grocery store — or even pre-made zucchini noodles or riced cauliflower — which offer convenience without sacrificing nutritional value. Doing so will ensure you always have cut veggies on hand (perfect for no-effort snacking!) and will shave a few minutes off your meal preparation, so you can stick to your diet. Clean eating focuses on foods with a low-energy density — those are foods that have relatively large portion sizes with few calories (like leafy greens, which have less than 10 calories per cup). Low energy density foods fill up your plate — and your tummy — so you feel satisfied and full without having to take in tons of calories. That makes it easier to stick to your diet and lose weight and, because low energy density foods tend to pack in lots of nutrients, you’ll also feel energized.

In a large bowl, whisk together the zest, eggs, cornflour and sugar. Whisk together vigorously until you have a thick cream. You could use a mixer for this. 2 Scrape the mixture into a pan, add the water and lemon juice and cook over a medium low heat, whisking continuously, until the pudding is thick enough to really coat/run slowly from the back of a spoon. It should get hot, and nearly, but not quite, boil. Pour into 6 glasses or small bowls and allow to cool, then put in the fridge for at least 6 hours, or until firm and chilled. Zest and juice of 2 large unwaxed lemons 150g caster sugar 450ml double cream/150ml single cream and 300g mascarpone. 1 Grate the zest and then juice the lemons (you need 80ml, so use any extra for another time). Put both zest and 80ml juice a pan with the sugar. Heat over a medium-low heat, stirring until the sugar has dissolved completely. Keep warm. 2 In a separate pan, warm the cream over a medium-low flame and bring to a simmer, but do not let it boil. Remove from the heat and then add the lemon and sugar and whisk. Cool slightly and then pour the mixture through a fine sieve into bowls. Cool further, then leave in the fridge for at least 8 hours or until firm and chilled, then serve.

Salt and black pepper, 2 limes, 250g of cherry or winter tomatoes, roughly chopped, 2 red chillies, roughly chopped, 4 flour or corn tortillas, Olive oil 4 spring onions, chopped, 2 garlic cloves. A small bunch of coriander, leaves picked, stalks finely chopped, 1 tsp hot smoked paprika 400g tin of black beans (or 250g if home-cooked), drained. 400g crumbly tofu (see note above)
1 First, mash the avocados with a little salt and black pepper, plus the zest of 1 lime and half its juice. 2 Add the red chillies and a good pinch of salt and pepper to the chopped tomatoes. Squeeze over the juice of the other half lime. 3 Warm or toast the tortillas and keep them warm: I do this by holding them over a flame on each side for 30 seconds or so, then wrapping in foil and keeping in a low oven. 4 Next, heat a frying pan over a medium heat and add a little oil. Add the spring onions, garlic and chopped coriander stalks. Cook for around 2 minutes, or until

the edges of the garlic are beginning to brown. 5 Add the smoked paprika and a little more salt and black pepper, then cook for another minute. 6 Add the drained black beans to the pan and fry them for around 2 minutes, or until they have dried out a little. Add the crumbled tofu, turn the heat up and cook until the tofu has begun to catch and colour a little. Take off the heat and season well with salt and pepper. 7 Pile on to the toasted tortillas, with a little chilli and the coriander leaves strewn over, and serve with the avocado and tomatoes for spooning on top.

Ruby’s Golf Update
On St. Patrick’s day we headed for Roda golf course, nowhere near Ireland I know but we did have quite a few Irish players with us. The course was in good condition and whilst it was a fine day it was a bit chilly, despite this there were players wearing shorts Brrr. The course played well but the par 3’s proved a bit difficult with only a couple of player’s hitting the greens. The results on the day were as follows, nearest the pin on the par 3’s was Colin Fear, nearest the pin in two was Colin Fear, Two’s pot Colin
the utilities in the children playground area were all sanded and painted. The whole park and sandpits were also cleared and cleaned and the lawn replanted, ready for action.
Fear, and best back nine Colin Fear, but it was not all Colin’s day, best front nine Jim McCarthy, Gold division winner was Michelle Evans, Silver and overall winner on the day was Roger Clarke. Back at Rayzs bar whilst enjoying a nice buffet provided by our hosts, the football card was won by Jeff Evans. Our next trophy game is at Altorreal on the 31st of March. Vivace’s 10th Anniversary Celebration Concert!
The Grand Finale has arrived, after an exciting year for Vivace Classical Choir! During the first ten years the choir has performed music covering three centuries. The choice of music has been taken from that composed by those portrayed on the front cover of their eye-catching poster - from Antonio Vivaldi’s “Gloria” written in 1715 clockwise to Sir Karl Jenkins “The Armed Man” first performed in 2000 - plus many others in between. Musical Director Tom Pargeter says “To choose music representative of VIVACE’s first ten years, to fill an hour long concert performance, is more difficult than one would at first think. The difficulty lies in the choice of which piece of splendid music should be discarded, rather than which to keep. I do hope that this celebratory programme contains some of your favourites, and that you enjoy the evening’s performance.” This will be Tom’s final concert as Musical Director.
After 10 years, he feels the time is right to hand over the baton. He will be greatly missed by the choir, but everyone involved is thoroughly enjoying revisiting the beautiful music and the wonderful memories it evokes. There will be two performances. The first performance will be a charity performance in La Siesta Church on Friday 31st March, starting at 7.30pm. Entrance is €6 to be paid on the door. Doors will open at 7.00pm. From the very beginning, Vivace has been based in San Miguel de Salinas, so it is fitting that the final performance will be in the Casa de Cultura in San Miguel de Salinas on Saturday 1st April, starting at 8.00pm. Doors will open at 7.30pm. Tickets are €5, and can be obtained by telephoning Douglas Brown on 659616356. Tickets can also be got from Bargain Books in San Miguel. It will be an evening not to be missed!

Chocó - Wild landscapes on the coast
To Sponsor this page call 950 680 007
Explore Colombia
The richness of Chocó’s landscape, undisturbed by humans, can be overwhelming. This is the only department of Colombia that is lapped by the waves of two oceans: the Pacific and the Caribbean. Rivers abound here, as do National Parks: Utría, Los Katíos, and Tatamá are all located here. Chocó, founded in 1947, is known for its dark sand beaches. In Chocó, take the opportunity to distance yourself from the stress of civilization and get closer to nature. Dive and swim alongside colourful fish in Capurganá in the Caribbean, surf Nuquí’s big waves, or listen to the incredible sound of 40-ton whales jumping in and out of the water. The jungle is the unique backdrop of many experiences in Chocó; it entirely surrounds the beach and seems to want to extend into the ocean. Visitors should make time for bird watching, seeing humpback whales from Antarctica frolic in the water, walking on the beach, and swimming in waterfalls near the waves. Observe the contrast between the lushness of the forest and the serenity of the Pacific in places like the dark sands at Utría Cove National Park and the beaches of the Gulf of Tribugá, where the landscape is made up of mangrove trees and waterfalls. In Chocó you can try a variety of activities, from snorkeling and diving to kayaking and hiking.
Dance Night
The heart of the andes
Santa Marta Destination of scenery, sun and sand . A traditional party will cheer up anyone with the lively rhythms of the region. On the beaches of Santa Marta visitors frequently encounter groups of local musicians who delight the audience playing their drums to start a party during an evening stroll along the beach. Although in some places you cannot enter the sea at night, a party on the sand is something that is worth living for and being part of.
Bogotá is the capital and largest city in Colombia. A melting pot of people from around the country, it is diverse and multicultural, with a blend of modern and colonial architecture. The predominant colours in Bogotá are the green of the city’s many parks and the eastern mountains overlooking the sanctuaries of Monserrate and Guadalupe, and the rich red of its many brick buildings. The landscape of Bogotá, marked by the green of the Andes to the east, is spectacularly one-of-a-kind. Apart from the many outdoor spaces in Bogotá, travelers find it an ideal place to do business, or explore history, food, culture and many other local customs. In Bogotá travelers have access to a range of entertainment that includes around 50 museums, plus fine dining, lively nightlife, and nearby nature reserves. Emotions are not lacking in Santa Marta. Mamancana, a reserve of 600 hectares of dry tropical forest located on the road between the city and the Simon Bolivar Airport, is ideal for those who enjoy contact with nature. There, besides horseback riding, visitors can watch birds and adventure sports including rock climbing and paragliding. Here are activities for everyone here: be seduced by the streets of the oldest city in Colombia, live the emotions of adventure sports and swimming with dolphins, among many others. In the Taironaka nature reserve, at kilometre 58 on the road to Riohacha, visitors may notice the cultural and historical significance of the Tayrona culture. There are restored terraces where the Indians built their homes and an archaeological museum with original artefacts. The area is of great importance for Koguis, direct descendants of the Tayrona.

Aruba is AWESOME
LETS Travel
Arrecife is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city full of culture and history located slightly east of central Lanzarote. The name derives from the Spanish for reef and refers to the volcanic rock formations that lie out to sea and protect the picturesque harbour. Arrecife started life as a small fishing village way back in the 15th Century until it grew, eventually becoming the island’s capital in 1852. Today, it is well known as a haven for shoppers! With streets lined with boutiques, high-end retail outlets selling designer labels and bargains galore, many people visit Arrecife for its endless shopping possibilities. Look out for the long pedestrian road called Calle Léon y Castillo and a large shopping centre. It may be a good idea to check out the Centro Insular de Cultura El Almacén, a cultural centre filled with various exhibitions.
Welcome to our little pearl in the Caribbean where island vibes and our mañana way of life blend with all the modern comforts of back home, making Aruba your true home, away from home. Whether it is your first or your 30th visit, whether you’re looking to relocate or just spend a day in port. Get to know Aruba’s culture, by visiting historical and natural places. Whether you like an air conditioned sight-seeing bus tour or a more adventurous 4x4 guided off-road tour, horseback riding, four wheelin’ tour, these are just some of the ways available to explore the island of Aruba. It must be said that there are things to do in Aruba for everyone. Aruba’s beaches are probably one of the biggest attractions on the island. Even though it’s great to spend your day relaxing on the beach, Aruba offers plenty of other attractions and activities that are well worth exploring during your stay.

Mazda MX-5 2.0
Venture Fleet also have a Translation Arm of their business between the Language Triangle of English, Spanish and German.
The Mazda MX-5 might be a simple little roadster, but it proves beyond any shadow of a doubt that less is more. Its lightweight construction makes for handling that’s guaranteed to brighten your day, plus surprisingly good fuel economy. It’s both cheap to buy and to run. Even the wellequipped SE-L Nav model we favour costs less than many humdrum hatchbacks. True, it has just two seats, but it’s roomy enough, even for taller people, and the boot is a decent size as well. As good as the A3 and S-Class are, they can’t match the smiles per mile the MX-5 provides. It’s our
favourite convertible by a comfortable margin. DESPITE FACING NEW competition from the mechanically similar Fiat 124 Spider, the Mazda MX-5 has triumphed again in this price category. We love its rev-happy and punchy 2.0-litre engine, the easy-to-use and super-fast manual roof mechanism, and the temptingly low price. Even better are the MX-5’s ride and handling. At first, you might think it feels a little soft, but this means you can attack B-roads without being violently rattled around. Once you get to a corner, it’s easy to judge where the MX-5’s limits are, and the car is forgiving if you push too hard. Our favourite SE-L Nav trim has a 7.0in touchscreen.

Motoring Roundup
“The Fiat 124 Spider is a brilliant sports car: it looks great, is brilliant fun to drive and is great value for money. ” We were very impressed with the Fiat 124 Spider when we tried it for the first time in Italy earlier this year. We particularly liked the Fiat’s flexible turbo engine and compliant ride. Now we’ve driven the car in the UK, though, we’re even more sure t h a t
it’s one of Fiat’s best ever sports cars. For a start, the ride quality doesn’t disappear on our lumpy, pitted tarmac. In fact, the compliant suspension set-up means that on a fast but badly-surfaced road it feels very composed, without any of the skittish progress some stiffly-sprung sports cars bring. As in the Mazda MX-5 it shares a platform with, the smooth ride of 124 Spider comes at a cost of some body roll in corners. A sharp S-bend will upset the balance most but on a long, fast curve the
Fiat 124 Spider 2016 Fiat feels great. It’s a superb cruiser, perfect for a coastal drive or scenic route through mountains where the grippy Bridgestone tyres mean it feels planted in those sweeping corners, too. The steering is short on feel for a sports car, but it is nicely weighted and quick enough to make the 124 Spider feel alive at your fingertips. • Best sports cars on sale As it’s rear-wheel drive, you can use the throttle to help bring the car around bends as well, which is great fun. The progressive power delivery of the Mazda MX-5’s naturallyaspirated engines means
they’re better at adjusting a cornering line so that car is slightly more fun when you’re pushing hard. The Fiat’s 1.4-litre turbocharged unit feels more powerful most of the time, however, thanks to a higher torque output that sees the peak coming in nice and low in the rev range. It means you can leave the Fiat in-gear and enjoy the punchy performance. On a great road you’ll miss the high-end zip of the Mazda, but most of the time the turbo unit is a better fit. The engine sounds sporty in the middle of the rev range, but thanks to extra sound deadening in the Fiat the note is much quieter overall than in the MX-5. In fact, the Fiat is fun almost all of the time you’re driving it.

What will buying a car post Brexit mean?
The price of new and used cars is expected to rise post-Brexit. A number of factors are responsible for this, including fluctuations in the value of the pound, but it’s the estimated £4.5bn increase in costs for the industry that’s likely to be a driving force behind consumer price rises. With the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) suggesting an increase of about £1,500 in the price of foreignbuilt cars, British motorists could suffer a financial sting before they even get behind the wheel. We could find ourselves with a smaller range of cars to choose from, too. At the
moment there are already several models that we don’t get in the UK. The cost of engineering a car in righthand-drive purely to accommodate this contrarian island may become unfeasible for European manufacturers. Brexit could cause a rise in grey imports, including from other right-hand-drive countries such as Japan. Around 1.72 million cars were built in the United Kingdom last year, around 1.35 million of which were exported. These are both record figures. However, the SMMT has said that this is at odds with the uncertainty felt by the industry.
Theresa May officially fires the starting gun for Britain to quit the European Union on March 29 when Article 50 is invoked. What will then follow is at least two years of intense negotiations that will shape the UK’s place with its nearest neighbours and the wider world. But how will Brexit affect the UK’s motoring manufacturing industry and its 32 million drivers… What about prices for cars and fuel? A recent report by PA Consulting Group says the cost of producing a car here could rise £2,370 with a ‘hard Brexit’, which will be passed on to the consumer. Motoring groups have predicted the price of new and used cars is expected to rise once Britain leaves the EU. While the value of the £ has an impact on imports/exports, the SMMT believes foreign-built cars could cost £1500 more after Brexit. Trade tariffs, says the SMMT, are likely to mean £2.7bn of levies on cars being imported into Britain and £1.8bn on those being exported. Rupert Pontin, valuation director at Glass’s Guide, warns buyers to expect “a period of instability for new and used car sales”. As for fuel, it’s already on the way up and both the RAC and
How Brexit will affect me if I own a car?
AA believe petrol and diesel will rise – again import duties will play a big part. The AA’s “worst case scenario” sees a litre of fuel costing an extra 18.7p, or almost £500 more per year for a two-car family filling up every fortnight. But I’ll still have plenty of cars to choose from, right? Well, maybe not such a wide choice, actually. It could be that European-based manufacturers decide building right-hand drive cars for the UK market is just too expensive, given the level of tariffs they might face. The likes of Renault, Fiat, Seat and others could decide to offer British customers a limited range only of their full suite of makes and models. Will I be hit with higher insurance costs? Insurance costs are already high – especially for younger drivers – but if you are a woman motorist, your quote could actually come down. This is because the EU ruled in 2012 that gender should play no role in deciding insurance cover for a range of policies, not just motoring. So, despite evidence to suggest women are, in general, safer drivers and less of a risk than men, they are treated the same. With Britain quitting the EU and the prospect of various laws being abandoned or reversed, this area of equality law is one that could change.
And how will Brexit affect my motoring holidays? Customs and border checks the other side of the Channel may well become tougher for one thing. And what Britons can bring back into the UK, in terms of alcohol and cigarettes, may well be affected. Switzerland and Norway have set their own dutyfree allowances, so Britain could do the same. The Shengen agreement allows for free movement within the EU and motorists should still benefit from this – however, UK citizens might have to get separate visas to visit certain countries and there might be limits on how long you can spend in one country or another. The current open border between Northern Ireland and Ireland may also return to some form of customs control. What will happen to the motoring industry? It’s all in the detail of the deals yet to be struck on trade with Europe post-Brexit. Some 800,000 UK jobs are supported by the industry which built a record 1.72 million vehicles last year, exporting 1.35m of them. In cities like Sunderland, home to Nissan, it’s a major employer, so much so that there has been talk of a “sweetheart deal” between ministers and car bosses to ensure it stays here post-Brexit.

England 2-0 Lithuania Jermain Defoe admitted he struggled to contain his emotions even before scoring on his return from England exile in Sunday’s 2-0 World Cup qualifying win over Lithuania. Although Joe Hart wore the captain’s armband, Defoe led the Group F leaders out at Wembley Stadium with five-year-old Bradley Lowery, the cancer-stricken Sunderland fan with whom he has forged a strong bond. Defoe scored his first goal on the international stage for four years when he broke the deadlock from close-range after good work from Raheem Sterling. But Defoe - who last netted for England against San Marino in March 2013 - took just 21 minutes to get back onto the scoresheet. Vardy came off the bench to add a 66th-minute second from Adam Lallana’s deft flick. The win for Gareth Southgate’s men tightens their grip on Group F with their next qualifier at home to Slovenia on October 5.Before the game a minute’s silence was observed for the victims of last week’s London attacks. Wreaths were laid in the centre-circle by dignitaries.

Ozil contract talks
Mesut Ozil says he will hold talks with Arsenal over his future and decide whether or not to sign a new contract “soon”. The Germany attacker’s current deal expires in the summer of 2018 and there has been widespread speculation that he could leave the Emirates in the summer. But Ozil says he is comfortable at Arsenal and believes they will turn around the recent, dismal run that
