Road deaths up 33% this summer in murcia Region Eight people were killed on the roads between July and August this year, two more than in 2012, according to the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT). The deaths on the roads in the Murcia region increased by a third over the past July and August from these same two summer months last year; in 2013 there were eight deaths, compared to six in 2012. In the whole of Spain, fatalities were up in Cantabria, Madrid and Asturias, according to provisional data provided by the DGT, which does not include accidents on urban roads. In percentage terms, the biggest rise was Cantabria, with 400 percent, going from one death to five, followed by Madrid, with 320 percent (5 in 2012 and 16 in 2013) and

Asturias (6 in the past year, 11 in this one). Also increased, but to a lesser extent, are statistics in Aragón, Murcia, País Vasco and La Rioja, but in the country as a whole the number of fatalities decreased by 10 percent (235 deaths, 25 less than in the summer of last year). In the two autonomous states of Canarias and Navarrathe number of deaths remained unchanged and the remaining eight saw a decline, especially in the ComunidadValenciana (-56,6 %), Extremadura (-55,5 %) and Castilla-La Mancha (-48 %). The region of Castilla y León registered the highest number of deaths on the roads during those two months, with 38, ahead of the 33 killed on the Andalucían roads and 30 in Cataluña.

Santa Teresa has offered accommodation to homeless people.Currently between 25 and 30 people overnight at the Hospitalidad, a figure that increases in the winter months. The new dining room is a much needed adjunct to these facilities.

The launch of the social soup kitchen, which will be able to offer basic food support to 120 people every day, was timed to coincide with the Feast of its Patron Saint, the InstituciónBenéfica de San Antón, which was instituted almost 100 years ago.

Vicente VillarConesa said ‘The dining room seats 120 people per shift. It will be for people on the street, but open only for the provision of food, which will be of the proportions of a picnic, with a bocadillo and some fruit.’

International breast cancer

Last year Maria and the Pink Ladies celebrated international breast cancer day by selling helium filled pink balloons to the public and then releasing them all together (pictures attached), there were approximately 800 pink balloons released and as you know ALL of the proceeds go to the AECC for research and their early detection programme. This year Maria and the Pink Ladies have been invited by the management of Zenia Boulevard at La Zenia to hold the event at Zenia Boulevard where hopefully more than 2000 could be sold and released. The event will be held on Saturday 19th October 2013 although Maria and the Pink Ladies will be in attendance at the Boulevard on Friday 18th and Saturday 19th of October selling tickets that are attached to a helium filled balloon, the ticket will have the details of the purchaser of the balloon as there is a gift of 100 euros to the purchaser of the balloon that travels the furthest and is returned by the finder who will receive 20 euros for sending the

balloon back. There will also be a space on the ticket for people to write a personal message to a loved one they may have lost to cancer. On the Saturday 19th there will be a full days live entertainment provided by some of the best live entertainers on the Costa Blanca including Male vocalists Paul Micheal, Dan Davy and Kyle Jaymes, Suzy G and her dancers, 6 piece soul band Soul Power, Soul singer Richie Alexander, female vocalists Rhionne and Ashley Tweddle, Nikki G and duet Incognito, Abba Elite, Rob Bonovox, The Jazz Singer, Raquel Pena’s Flamenco for all, The Matrix Rock Choir, The Kingsbury dance academy and much more. The building that greets visitors, just the other side of Boat Island, on entering San Pedro, had, at one time, a giant golden Buddha over the entrance. Where that ended up, is anyone’s guess! Readers may remember, that the Golden Buddha Discotheque, drew crowds from all along the Costa Blanca, Calida, and inland. It was said that more money was spent on drugs

Last year we collected €14,859 and would of course like to beat that figure this year, with members undertaking many sponsored activities

this year. An example would be Maureen Catling and Valerie Quinnell who both jumped out of an aircraft at 15,000 ft above the skies of Seville on 5th June. These two brave souls have collected almost €2000 so far towards our Poppy Appeal! Another couple, Beppie and Peter Grange have done a 20 mile a day sponsored walk in Holland this summer and are giving a talk to our group this Thursday. Pain may be felt in one area of the body such as the head, stomach, arm, leg or back; or, in the case of flu or fibromyalgiaa it can be felt all over. One thing for sure is that it usually hurts! Pain can be divided into two main categories of which there are sub-categories. Pain is either chronic or acute. Pain that lasts a long time is called chronic, and pain that resolves quickly is called acute. Pain can also be useful however, in that it can be helpful in diagnosing a problem. Without pain, it is possible to seriously hurt yourself without knowing it; without pain it is possible that you might not realise you have a medical problem that needs treatment. Once the reason for the pain has been identified and acted upon, pain usually goes away, if it doesn´t then it usually comes under the `chronic category´. Chronic pain whilst it can be debilitating at times can ordinarily `be managed´. Fortunately, there are many ways to treat pain and treatment varies depending on the cause of pain. For example a lot of pain relief can be obtained by medications such as analgesics, and sometimes surgery is either helpful or necessary. Another way to treat pain is through the use of the mind. Consider chronic back pain for instance; chronic back pain can limit your everyday activities and make it difficult to do every day mundane tasks or even to work. It can therefore also affect how involved you are with friends, family members and fellow workers as they may have to do more than their usual share of daily tasks, especially when you cannot do the things you normally do. This can cause unwanted feelings of frustration within you because you cannot do what you used to do; resentment because you resent others being able to do more than you can, and this ultimately, can lead to stress. These feelings and emotions can (and often do) aggravate or worsen your back pain. Why? Because of the mind-body relationship. They work together – they are inextricably linked. The way your mind controls your thoughts and attitudes influences the way your body controls your pain. Both the pain itself, and /or the fear of pain, can cause you to avoid both physical and social activities. Over time this leads to less physical strength and weaker social relationships. It can also cause more lack of functioning and more pain. And so the cycle continues. This can lead to depression which is very common among people who have chronic back pain for instance. Continual pain can cause depression or make existing depression worse and not surprisingly, depression can also make any pain worse. Even mild depression can affect how well you can manage your pain and stay active. There is a belief that behind every physiological problem there is a psychological cause or issue. As a Mind and Body Therapist with an eclectic mix of both psychological and `hands on´ tools in my therapy toolbox I can offer assistance with managing or even eradicating your pain. The beauty of having an eclectic mix of tools to

help with pain relief is that pain is very subjective; what is extremely painful for one person may not necessarily be so for another, and, what provides pain relief for one may not help another. One thing for sure is that help in managing pain is available, whether that is physical and /or emotional pain. If you are in pain or think you may be depressed or if you are having a hard time controlling your emotions, it is best to get help sooner rather than later. If your pain is the result of an accident or emotional trauma, research has shown that some people are not able to fully deal with their pain until they deal with the emotional stress that their accident or trauma caused.

We had a holiday home in Spain in joint names. What do I have to do now? A. As there is no Spanish will unfortunately it will be necessary to convalidate your husbands U.K. will and probate document for use in Spain. The first step will be to obtain probate on the U.K. will. When this has been done it will be necessary to have Hague´s Apostille affixed to the U.K. documents and then have the translated and stamped by an official translator. When this has been done your solicitor in Spain will inform you if any further documents need to be obtained for the documents to be acceptable in Spain. (English wills very often refer to trusts, which cause complications and expense when convalidating for use in Spain). In this case I am afraid your inheritance tax will be subject to surcharge as the time limit to deal with the tax office in Spain is 6 months unless you request and extension in writing within the first 5 months. As you and the deceased are non residents of Spain, the inheritance tax is paid in Madrid, but no travelling is needed as your solicitor will have and agent in Madrid who for a very small fee will do the legwork in Madrid under the solicitors instructions. The expense and timescale of the convalidation for use in Spain of the English documents will depend on the wording of the will. To avoid complications in the future make sure you instruct your solicitor to prepare a Spanish will for yourself after you have finalized your acceptance of inheritance.

British Owned Houses Bulldozed

TWO British owned houses, located near the hamlet of Las Terreras in the municipality of CANTORIA in ANDALUCIA, SPAIN, were demolished today in an unannounced move by representatives of the Junta de Andalucia, the regional administration, acting on a court order. The demolitions resulted from proceedings started by the regional government in 2004 against a local promoter relating to the construction of FOUR houses without the planning permission. A firm sentence of demolition was applied to all four houses in June of this year and the promoter was ordered to demolish the properties at his own expense and to compensate the four British home owners, who, as acknowledged in the court judgement , had acted in good faith. However, it is understood that the home owners have yet to receive

anycompensation in spite of today’s demolition. Today (14th October), two of the four houses were demolished following an instruction to execute the demolition order issued by the Provincial Court in September 2013. The remaining two houses, also British owned, face the same fate. The houses were vacated at the time of their demolition. There are an estimated 300,000 illegal properties in Andalucia according to government estimates. pause for thought In my naivety I always imagined that once my daughters had married and left home they’d cease to be my responsibility and could get on with their lives without my constantly having to worry about them! How wrong could I be? My older daughter, Alison lives in Arusha, Tanzania, just a short (in African terms) 4-hour drive from Nairobi, which she regularly visits for the shops and culture, considerably better there than anything available locally. You can therefore, I’m sure, imagine the panic and worry we felt when we saw news on television of the shootings in the Westgate Centre, which left us scouring the web for further information as neither phone nor email brought any response from her. The article in the Independent about Elliot Prior, the 4-year old boy who confronted the gunman, who’d seriously wounded his mother, telling him he was “a very bad man”, did little to allay our fears, as the child’s name seemed worrying familiar. Our relief therefore when we eventually received confirmation that our daughter was safely at home in Arusha, may well be imagined, though sadly such relief was tempered with news that a cousin of her husband’s was among the dead and that young Elliot was indeed the son of a very close friend with whom Alison had been staying the previous week, and who was now fighting for her life in hospital. And I guess we’re all pretty similar; continuously concerned for our families and friends, worrying, often quite unnecessarily, even when family disputes disrupt a relationship. For blood is indeed thicker than water, and our fears, worries and concerns are merely a measure of our love, so nothing to be embarrassed or ashamed about. And, according to the Bible, God himself feels much the same about us. However independent we may think we are; however distant we may be or however badly disrupted our relationship with Him, our Heavenly father still cares and agonises over our sufferings and hurt, longing for us to seek comfort and strength in Him. Earthquakes in Valencia

More than 140 underwater earthquakes in Gulf of Valencia caused by gas rig By: thinkSPAIN , Wednesday, October 2, 2013 OVER 20 earthquakes were felt in the Gulf of Valencia yesterday (Tuesday), making a total of 141 in the last week and a half – the most severe of which measured 4.2 on the Richter scale. Each of them has had its epicentre near the Castor gas-drilling platform off the coast of Vinaròs (Castellón province), says the National Geographical Institute. Some 1.2 billion euros have been invested in the Castor project, which is attempting to exploit an old oil pocket around 1.75 kilometres below the sea-bed and which will cover a third of the Valencia region’s gas supply needs for 50

days. But since drilling began on September 13, nearly 300 earthquakes have been reported. Most of these have been of very low intensity, meaning they would not be felt, but lately they have reached levels that could cause damage or injury in the immediate area. The worst so far was at 03.23hrs on Tuesday morning, registering 4.2 on the Richter scale, beating the record set the previous day of 3.9. Spokesman for the Spanish College of Geographers, Jonathan Gómez Cantero warned that the micro-quakes being caused by the Castor platform’s activities were increasing in frequency and severity. Spain’s ministry for industry ordered the plant to down tools temporarily on Thursday

last week to enable experts to investigate the cause of the quakes. Yet Gómez Cantero says gas-drilling does not have to be carried out for the tremors caused by the Castor platform to be ongoing. Also a consultant for the United Nations, Gómez Cantero says the situation should remain on red alert as it is ‘not yet under control’. The quakes could have serious consequences for the area, affecting both the coast and seabed, harming marine life and leading to underwater landslides, adds the geographer. Due to its proximity to the Ebro river delta, a clay-soil area, the Gulf of Valencia is highly prone to this type of geographical phenomenon anyway, without the aggravation of a gas-drilling rig, Gómez Cantero warns.

Madeleine McCann: Crimewatch response ‘overwhelming’ Police probing the disappearance of Madeleine McCann in Portugal say there was an “overwhelming response” to an appeal on the BBC’s Crimewatch, with almost 1,000 calls and emails. Officers suggested the 2007 case bore hallmarks of a “preplanned abduction”. Scotland Yard said it was also looking into possible links to burglaries and bogus charity collections in the area. Crimewatch editor Joe Mather said several callers gave the same man’s name after e-fit pictures were shown. Madeleine, from Rothley, Leicestershire, was three years old when she disappeared from her parents’ holiday apartment in Praia da Luz on 3 May 2007.

Det Ch Insp Andy Redwood said Madeleine could have been abducted later than first thought Police outlined their latest findings in the search for Madeleine on BBC One’s Crimewatch on Monday. Detectives released two e-fits of a man seen carrying a child in Praia da Luz at 22:00 on the night Madeleine went missing and it was revealed that police now suspect Madeleine could have been taken later than previously thought - just before her mother returned to the apartment to check on her. In an update, Det Ch Insp Andy Redwood, the senior Metropolitan Police investigating officer, said there had been 730 phone calls and 212 emails “as a direct result of the specific lines of enquiry we issued yesterday”. “Detectives are now trawling through and prioritising that material,” he said. “This will take time.”

Crimewatch’s editor said the appeal “went better than expected” with many of the calls received from British people who had been at the resort at the time but had not previously contacted the Met. Mr Mather told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme a number of different names for the “key 10pm sighting” were mentioned and several callers suggested the same name.

He said: “Our focus in terms of understanding what happened on the night of 3 May has now given us a shift of emphasis. “It takes us through to a position at 10pm when we see another man who is walking towards the ocean, close by to the apartment, with a young child in his arms.” Crimewatch featured a detailed reconstruction lasting close to 25 minutes. Residents and tourists in Praia de Luz were unsure how successful the investigation would be The film is also to be shown in the Netherlands, Germany and Irish Republic this week as tourists from those countries were known to be in the resort at the time. Det Ch Insp Redwood said he would be travelling to the Netherlands and Germany to continue the appeal. Portuguese police shelved their inquiry in 2008 but Scotland Yard began a review of the case in May 2011 and opened a formal investigation in July this year. BBC News correspondent Tom Burridge in Praia da Luz said Portuguese police have not commented on the Met investigation but have given the impression that they are cooperating well with their British counterparts. Mark Williams-Thomas, a child protection expert, said it was a “pity” there were no plans to show the Crimewatch appeal in Portugal. “There are a lot of residents there who may have information,” he told Today. He suggested further progress in the case required Portuguese police to reopen their investigation. The Red Palm Weevil Rhynchophorus ferrugineus has become a serious pest of palm trees in Iberia. Originally from tropical Asia, this beetle reached Spain in the mid-1990s. Its effect on palms in areas it has invaded has been devastating. Although originally localised in Spain, there has been a population explosion during the past few years. This has led to the loss of thousands of palms, at great expense. Red Palm Weevils are large insects. Adults may reach a length of 5cm. As with most weevils, a prominent rostrum is present, with the mouthparts located at the end of this. This rostrum makes the Red Palm Weevil appear to have a large snout. Given its size, rostrum and bright red colouration with variable black markings, the Red Palm Weevil is unmistakeable. Adults have diurnal habits, making their detection easier. Larvae live within palms and can reach a large size. The grubs can be separated from larvae of other beetle species that live in palms such as chafers (most notably the black Potosia opaca) because the larvae of the Red Palm Weevil lack legs, whereas the larvae of chafers have six small legs. Unlike the Red Palm Weevil, these chafers feed on rotting material and will not damage healthy palms. The Red Palm Weevil is an unmistakable insect (K. Bensusan)

A range of palm species have been reported as affected by the Red Palm Weevil. In Spain, this beetle is most commonly reported infesting Phoenix species, with records of weevils on Washingtonia being less regular. Infestations are common in the Canary Palm Phoenix canariensis and the Date Palm Phoenix dactylifera, but the Canary Palm seems to be the most seriously affected species. Mature palms are most susceptible, making the damage incurred more costly. The Red Palm Weevil causes a high incidence of mortality in all species that it infests and has caused the death of thousands of palms in Andalucia over the last few years. Common targets are palms that have been pruned recently (especially if the pruning has not been carried out to a high standard and has left scars), or which have been weakened due to transplantation. Since adults are most active during the summer months, this period presents the highest probability of new infections. Can infections be prevented? Recently pruned, damaged and recently transplanted palms are most susceptible to attacks by adult weevils. Pruning and transplantation of palms should be avoided during the hotter months of the year (April to October), as this increases the probability of infection due to the increased activity of adult weevils. Treatment of palms can begin before infection has been proven if there are infected palms in the vicinity. Treatment methods for plants without symptoms are outlined in the Table. How can infected palms be identified? Diagnosing infections with Red Palm Weevils is not easy at first. During the initial stages of infection, the weevil occurs at low densities and causes limited damage, which may in addition be masked by the state of the injured or sickly palms that they prefer to attack. However, symptoms become obvious once palms become infested. The time taken before symptoms become apparent, as well as the symptoms themselves, depend on factors such as the point of entry of weevils, level of infestation and health of the palm in question, with unhealthy palms showing symptoms more quickly.

The greatest damage is caused when weevils enter palms via the crown. In such cases, weevils will damage growth of new fronds and ultimately kill the palm. Initial symptoms in such cases are new leaves in the centre of the crown that show signs of having been eaten, or that are leaning or appear weak. These new fronds that have been attacked can be pulled off easily. At a more advanced stage, the centre of the crown will collapse entirely. If palms are attacked via scars and damaged tissue away from the crown, damage is normally less severe. Symptoms in such cases will include mature fronds losing their normal orientation, giving the palms a disordered and asymmetrical look. Red Palm Weevils can be present on a palm all year round. As long as sufficient live plant material is present on a palm, the weevils will continue to feed on a plant and lay their eggs on it, so that infestations within single palms can continue to grow for several generations until they reach hundreds of beetles. Once palms can no longer offer enough food, adults will disperse to find new plants to infect. Gravid females will prefer to lay their eggs on palms that are diseased or in a bad condition. Tuesday 25th of September at half past five in the morning, Marbella para-athlete Javier Mérida completed a 15-hour swim across the English channel, becoming the first disabled swimmer from Spain to accomplish the feat. Mérida, whose leg was amputated six years ago, is now the fourteenth Spaniard to make the journey that normally covers the 32 kilometres from Dover, on England’s southern coast, to Calais in France. He hit difficulties however and sea currents took him off course, adding an extra 15 kilometres onto the already difficult

route. His attempt began at 2pm on Monday with the water’s temperature at 16 degrees centigrade. In compliance with the rules laid down by the Channel Swimming Association Mérida swam without a wet suit and was accompanied by a navigation boat that would only provide basic or vital assistance. Despite his disability, from the start the official observer was strict with the Marbella-born athlete, who lost his right leg from the knee downwards in 2007 from an accident. He had to start from dry land and drag himself into the water until he could swim. Mérida had completed 35 kilometres when the wind changed. “I swam for four hours but made no progress,” the swimmer confessed. After another three kilometres the boat’s crew decided to divert further down the coast to Wissant after realising that it would be impossible for Mérida to reach Calais battling against the strong currents.The Marbella swimmer eventually completed the journey, again having to drag himself onto dry land. There he was congratulated by the observer, who confirmed his feat and said his official Channel Swimming certificate would be arriving soon. Mérida says his next challenge will be swimming Loch Ness in Scotland.

‘Strictly Line Up for 2013’ wee k 3 By Lyn Aspden of ‘Strictly Dance’

Opening this weeks show for love week were Abbey Clancy and Aljaz and their Jive. A bit stiff but not a bad attempt. She needed to have her feet closer together on her chasses, but coped with quite a good variety of steps. I awarded her a 6 and the judges 28. Next were Patrick Robinson and Anya with a Foxtrot. Started nicely but unfortunately, that’s where it ended. It was flat footed had no swing or sway and lacked elegance. I found it disappointing and gave him 5 and the judges 27. Dave Myers and Karen then danced a Paso Doble. Capes again - boring. What on earth was this supposed to be a comedy routine?!! Absolutely awful more like a bull in a China shop having a paddie tantrum, although the crowd loved him. I awarded him a 3 and the judges 16. Following were Fiona Fullerton and Anton with their version of Waltz. Lack of lifted core and no drive through her feet left this waltz plonky. There was elegance but it was marred because of the points mentioned although she did

get through her steps this week. I gave her 5 and the judges a very generous 28. Rachel Riley and Pasha followed with Cha Cha Cha. Even though Rachel was trying to use her hips her lack of use of feet and ankles left this heavy and a bit boring and robotic although an improvement on last week. I gave her 5 and judges a total of 27. Next to perform were Mark Benton and Iveta with an American Smooth. Even though Mark always tells the story well, I wish someone would tell him how to use his feet! Plates of meat spring to mind, I found this very disappointing and gave him a 4 and judges 26. Out next were Ben Cohen and Kristina with Rumba. Much improved, he looked masculine although he needs to learn how to use his spare arm. I gave him 7 with the judges 28. The next couple were Sophie Ellis Bextor and Brendan dancing the difficult Samba. She gave this a good attempt with difficult choreography. She is musically good but lacking technique

at this early stage of the competition. I awarded her 7 with the judges 31. The next performance came from Julien MacDonald with Janette and a Jive. The most improved of the week. She had him working on a small trampoline and it worked, great kicks and flicks and full of enthusiasm although lacking a bit of timing and rhythm. I gave him 7 and judges a mean total of 22. Susannah Reid and Kevin then performed a Viennese Waltz. This was a nice elegant performance with the core starting to be lifted. Musical and soft with a good fleckerl (turn on the spot). I gave 8 and the judges 34. Performing next were Vanessa Feltz and James with their Tango. Oh dear! Awful springs to mind, plonky, she was being dragged around the floor with no resemblance to a Tango, that said the music would have been more suited to a Cha Cha. I gave her a sympathy vote of 2 with the judges 20. Following were Ashley Taylor Dawson and Ola with Samba. A great attempt at a

very difficult dance, great rhythm, hips and choreography just marred by his chin not being lifted. I awarded a 7 and judges a total of 31. Next out were Natalie Gumede and Artem with Rumba. What a beautiful performance, this girl lives and breathes dancing and already looks like a professional. Superb and worthy of a 10 with the judges 36. Closing the show this week were Deborah Meadon and Robin with Quickstep. This was fast and furious with quite difficult choreography but because her frame was not lifted and her head was down it was heavy. I gave her a 6 and the judges a total of 28. Ending up in this weeks bottom 2 were Julien MacDonald and Vanessa Feltz and after the dance off with another unanimous vote Julien survives yet another dance off. He really shouldn’t have been in the bottom 2 it should have been Dave Myers but it looks as though he is to be this years peoples champion. Let’s see what happens in next weeks show, until then Keep Dancing!1

Made from fermented honey mead fortified Vikings and was the drink of choice of Medieval kings, not to mention various monasteries, who vied with each other to produce the best mead. Some archeological evidence of fermented honey drinks goes back as far as 9,000 years, and mead was regularly drunk 4,000 years ago. Todayit’s gone upmarket, and varieties of mead can be found for sale boasting flavours ranging from cherry to chili pepper! 1 The humble Kale has suddenly and unexpectedly been thrust into the top spot as the most amazing super food ever. How To:

460g uncooked white rice 1.5 litres chicken stock, divided 3 cloves garlic 1 teaspoon chopped fresh parsley 1/2 teaspoon curry powder 5 threads saffron salt and ground black pepper to taste 4 tablespoons olive oil 1 onion, diced

(1.35kg) whole chicken, 1 cut into small pieces 255g peeled and deveined small prawns, diced 6 small lobster tails 225g clams in shell, scrubbed 200g small mushrooms 150g peas 1 (85g) tin mussels, drained

1. Rinse rice with cold water; drain; set aside. Bring the chicken stock to the boil in a saucepan over medium-high heat, reduce the heat to low, cover and keep warm. Work the garlic, parsley, curry powder, saffron threads, salt, black pepper and 125ml of the hot chicken stock together with a mortar and pestle until a smooth liquid forms; set the seasoning liquid aside. 2. Heat the oil in a paella pan over medium-high heat; cook and stir the onion until lightly browned. Stir in the chicken, prawns, lobster and clams; cook and stir until the chicken is no longer pink in the centre, about 10 minutes. Pour in the seasoning liquid. 3. Stir in the rice, pour in the hot chicken stock and simmer until the rice is nearly tender, about 15 minutes. Add mushrooms, peas and mussels; stir two times and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from heat; cover and let stand until rice is soft and flaky, about 7 minutes.

Atten-shun!

To assist in my ongoing battle to master the Spanish language to an acceptable level, my friend Lilty has lent me a storybook. Chapter by chapter I am reading and enjoying it, but it comes complete with an audio CD in Spanish, and this is where my downfall lies – understanding spoken Spanish still requires far too much guesswork on my part! But I will succeed, or perish in the attempt, so I sought out our 4 year old but never used radio. I gave it a good dusting, sat it opposite me on the table and plugged it in. We regarded each other mutely for a minute. I picked it up and examined its lead, which was undamaged. Proud of my technological savvy, I passed on to its buttons, which were simplicity itself – Radio On/Off, CD On/Off and Tuning. I put in a CD, pushed the switch to On, and – nothing! I took out the CD, switched it to Radio On, and – nothing! I tuned it from the top of its dial to the bottom, and got only the sound of silence. I looked round, wondering if the world had ended and I hadn’t noticed, but the world still looked and sounded pretty much the same. I gave it there. He pressed a little tiny button right on top marked Standby, and the previously mute radio burst forth into sound. I had seen Standby, and thought that it was the same as Pause, and reasoned that you can’t Pause something until after it has started – It never occurred to me that Standby was the same as On! I maintain that Standby means take a break, have a rest, stand at ease, not quit the job completely – that is what the Off buttons are for! If the manufacturers meant On/ Off, then why didn’t they say so? Standby indicates that the radio is alive, but merely resting! If the manufacturers are going to use Standby as a command, then I feel they should also have a button marked Atten-shun! preferably indicated by an outline of a smartly saluting soldier.

Bad Manners – A Glimmer of Hope? I have always found it thought provoking that in general it is the older generation - particularly those Baby Boomers who were born immediately after the Second World War – who advocate stronger discipline in schools and even a return to limited corporal punishment. It is also this generation by and large, that supports tougher prison sentences and a more stringent regime put in place within those establishments. Thought provoking, but not surprising. When you think back to the relatively small amount of crime, particularly violent crime, that we came into contact with or read about in the papers as kids, it’s not hard to see why we tend to correlate levels of crime with the discipline in the home and at school compared with today. A murder committed then, was almost always a subject for headline news in the national papers and the disappearance of children likewise. Today of course, the abduction and murder of children is still a headline item and rightly so, but like killings and violent

robberies, it is a crime that has exploded in terms of numbers since the days of my youth and has tragically become common place. Figures show that violent crime in one year in England and Wales today, exceeds the figure for the first seventy years in total, of the twentieth century. And it doesn’t take a genius to work out the reasons why – except of course it does to the politically correct posse who refuse to see what is happening in our society today and simply want to apply more of the same softly-softly remedies to the problem. They also argue that much crime went unreported and undetected back then, thus distorting the figures. But if that’s the case, then how would they know? Anyway I’m having none of that. Our parents for the most part were responsible people, who loved their kids as any parent does today, and wanted the very best for them. By the same token, they did not consciously do anything that would have put us at risk or in danger. But not only were we allowed out unsupervised on our streets to play, we had packed lunches to take with us at weekends when we would cycle into the countryside to pick blackberries, or go fishing for minnows with our jam jars, or were just happy to be out in the fresh air. And as long as we arrived back home at tea time, they were happy and confident

that we would come to no harm. The point being: we were safe from predatory perverts and violent individuals and the cases where children came to harm from such people - although not unheard of - were rare. Common sense was instilled in us from an early age; we were instructed on the rules of the road and made to repeat them ad nauseam so that they became second nature, and we were taught responsibility. And in the matter of other crime: of course we would hear about burglaries and theft and even armed robberies. But following conviction, the perpetrators would invariably be sent down for a period commensurate with the crime. But again these were not events of the epidemic proportions that we see today. The teaching of respect for people and property has its roots in the home and this is now where we have a fundamental dilemma because the sad fact is, the problem now extends two generations deep. Kids are often receiving instruction by example, from a generation that itself began the slide into a world that today sees rampant selfishness; lack of respect for their fellow human beings and a downward spiralling of standards. Add to that the worship of materialism and a thriving get-something-for-nothing credo, and it all makes for a pretty depressing picture of life in modern day Britain and the world generally.

Last week in the new Zenia Boulevard shopping centre, my wife was struck on the head by a ball that was being kicked around by a father and his young son. The adult retrieved the ball without even a glance at my wife and proceeded to laugh uproariously along with his son at what had just happened. But my good lady is made of stern stuff and advancing on him, she delivered a verbal dressing down and demanded if he really thought that it was a laughing matter. He escaped a handbagging by a hairs breadth, and nervously apologised, persuaded no doubt by the fact that shoppers close by were nodding and murmuring their approval. This indicated two things. Firstly that here was a moron teaching his offspring by example that disrespect is okay. And secondly – thank goodness – that there are still people around who hold such cretins in contempt. Perhaps there is hope after all.

Investment in the ‘Poyato Institute for the Furtherance of Remitroot and Associated Products’ comes from many countries. Remitroot or Remitus Radix as it was known to the Romans has many uses. Distilled into a potent spirit, fermented into a fullbodied wine or crushed to make a corrosion preventative for the ballast tanks of oil-tankers. It possesses medicinal and combustible qualities and is renowned as an aphrodisiac. It cures Peruvian Toe Rot, detonates at seven kilometres a second and was used to fuel many of Caligula’s best nights. Now Poyato had pushed the boundaries of Remitroot even further. Remitbrick and Remitbright are the results of this research. Remitbrick is a building material made from Alquerian Clay, a distinctive clay modified by bad drainage and processed Remitroot stalks. The resultant brick has inverse thermal qualities. As the ambient temperature rises so the brick cools and as the temperature drops so it warms. A house constructed from these bricks has an internal temperature of 21.75 degrees centigrade irrespective of outside conditions. No need for heating in the Winter or air-conditioning in the Summer. Remitbright is a paint made from Alquerian Newt urine and crushed Remitroot berries. This emulsion emits photons inversely proportional to the light falling on it. The darker the night so the more photons are emitted causing a daylight balanced glow which alleviates the necessity for lighting in reception rooms etc. The announcement of these two products caused a sensation in the benefactor countries. Cash flowed in, while Britain started supplying the pencils as well as the sharpeners. All wanted a piece of this new Remitroot action. How will the power companies and others with similar vested interests welcome these new products? Is this a watershed in Alquerian fortunes?

Botnets part 2: Last week we looked at bot’s and Botnets, What they are and how they work. Today I am going to offer the other side of the coin. The side of prevention and cure! First we need to prevent these bots from accessing your computer in the first place. Unsurprising there are several of the best know anti-virus / malware providers have made this insidious threat a number 1 priority. Microsoft, Symantec (Norton) both offer suggestion as to how to prevent the bots getting on your machine and how to remove them should these tricks fail. Let’s start with prevention. Microsoft, sensibly, suggest to strengthen your computer’s defences by: 1) Installing antivirus and antispyware programs from a trusted source. 2) Keep all software up to date. 3) Use strong passwords and keep them secret. 4) Never turn off your firewall. 5) Use flash drives cautiously. Symantec make similar suggestions but include 1) Increase the security of your browser, 2) Limit you user rights while online (neither of these first 2 have any suggestion on how to do these things!), 3) Avoid opening anything unless you looked for it, asked for it and chose to download it. There was 1 other suggestion, which was an added plug of “buy our software”! Do not be tricked into downloading malware be aware that attackers can enlist your computer in a botnet by: Delivering malware in downloads that you think are pictures or movies, or through links that you click in email or instant messages (IM), or on a social network. Scaring you into clicking a button or link they supply with fake warnings that your computer has a virus. The cure is a simple of method of resolving this problem. You just need to restart the computer. Press function key 8 (F8) to get into admin mode. When the computer has finished starting, run any good anti-malware program (malwarebytes, superantispyware, comodo antispyware). Put the kettle on because this is going to take a long time. If your lucky and you haven’t any problems, Great! Otherwise just follow the program’s guide to remove anything found.

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

He promised to take care of me and yet I feel afraid. I don’t feel like Nick’s wife. I am something to be loaded and unloaded, like a sofa or a cuckoo clock…tossed into a junkyard, thrown into the river. I don’t feel real anymore. I feel I could disappear. Every picture tells a story. Whether pictorially depicted or intimately written such as a diary kept by our female protagonist, there are always (at least) two sides to every story and truths to unravel from the dishonesty and deceit. In a dysfunctional marriage, with mismatched relationships the faults lie with both parties. Nick and Amy’s marriage might initially seem blissful with Amy swooning over Nick’s socks fat with love on their first wedding anniversary before it turns pear-shaped and oppressive shortly afterwards. Amy was from an affluent background, the “product” of her parents’ wealth based on the Amazing Amy series. Her childhood in fact, every part of her growing up had been documented and exposed to American society and she had a reputation to live up to. She had to be amazing, mediocrity was just not good enough for this socialite of a New Yorker. She had to be: brilliant, creative, kind, thoughtful, witty and happy. When Amy met Nick she was playing the girl with style, the Cool Girl. She was pretending to be the kind of woman desired by men such as Nick. When Amy disappeared from Nick’s life on their fifth wedding anniversary she had concocted a plausible but worrying version of her life in a diary that was deliberately hidden from sight but eventually discovered by the police. “Nick loved a girl who doesn’t exist. I was pretending, the way I often did, pretending to have a personality…The way some women change fashion regularly. I change personalities.” It is not surprising that Nick is frustrated by his marriage, constantly asking himself, “Who are you?” and “What are you thinking?” The woman that he adored with the “brilliant, popping brain, a greedy curiosity” for knowledge transforms into an abrasive person wanting to hurt others. She bore little resemblance to the woman he had happily married. She became the “new, brittle, bitter Amy” after shedding her “pile of skin and soul on the floor.” What happened to the Amazing Amy? Of course she wasn’t real, she was a character created by her parents for a money-spinning series of adventure stories! A symbol, a walking ideal. A perfectionist. Desperate to be flawless. The diary also unravels mysteries about Amy’s stalkers, Amy’s “obsessions.” We read shocking inserts about Hilary Handy who wanted to be Amazing Amy, imitating her and indicating that she also wanted to replace Amy, even being brazen enough to approach Amy’s mother, Marybeth and informing her: “ I’m going to be your daughter now, I’m going to kill Amy and be your new Amy.” Then there was Desi Collings, so obsessed with Amy. They dated for

a year before Amy called off the relationship. He took an overdose and was found naked in her bed. A noirish thriller. So, what did happen to Amy? Why did she want to buy a gun to protect herself from her husband? Was she a victim OR a predator? Nick, on the other hand had been wiped clean of love, feeling utterly destroyed by his nemesis. His parents had had an unhappy marriage, his father despised women. Did Nick turn into a misogynist just like his father? Was his wife such a problem that needed to be dealt with? A bitter voice that needed to be squelched? When Amy disappeared Nick acts in a weird fashion, not the way an innocent man should look, far too casual, constantly reminded of his bizarre behaviour by Go, his twin. “You’d think you mislaid a damn umbrella!” She unravels lies upon lies from a brother she trusted and becomes scared for both of them. Why would Nick buy so many expensive things, 212,000$ worth on his credit card and store it in the shed behind Go’s house? Nick had told Amy that he couldn’t take any more stress. He couldn’t handle one more thing to worry about and was cracking under the pressure. So, was Amy right? Was something horribly wrong with her husband? Had he shoved her so hard that she had banged her head? Had he shown absolute disgust in wanting to hurt her so badly that he might have killed her? The police thought so. So did the American public who vilified him. The enquiry soon turned into a witch hunt and before long Nick was struggling with his alibis whilst the rest of the world believed him guilty of the murder of his wife. A disclosure by a so-called friend sends shock waves rocketing with the revelation that Amy was pregnant. Nick’s real life nightmares come to haunt him: they were about being wronged, about being trapped, a victim of forces beyond his control. He knows that it is only time before his arrest and under Missouri law, facing the death penalty. The sinister chant of Nick did you kill Amy? adds to the eerie Gothic nature that creeps like a germ throughout the story. But did he kill her? But what is the truth? I mean the real truth? What happened to Amy? Is it a Gothic tale of the heroine who makes the wrong choice, selects the wrong mate and pays the ultimate price? Sporting Mazarron Camposol vs Los Alcazares 0-1

Mazarron, Sunday, 5 oct at 17:30. Sporting against one of leaders in the league. The game started from Sportings side very weak. Los Alcazares was sharper in the duels. The 2nd ball was won each time by the midfield of Alcazares. Therefore the normally so creative midfield of Sporting could not show what they can do otherwise. Sporting could not get a grip on the match. In the 34 minute therefore it was 0-1 from a counter attack. This seemed the signal for Sporting to go and play football. The second half was totally different it was Sporting that dominated. Striker Dani was replaced by Rei. This just seemed to have a good effect because within 5 minutes Sporting got 2 changes to score the 1-1. But the keeper reacted well. The game totally changed and went just one way. Left striker Moha was one on one with the goalkeeper and after him it was young Daniel

Scott who came one on one with the goalkeeper. But still it was the goalkeeper of Los Alcazares who won. Until the 75th minute, a brilliant pass from Moha to right striker Fran, Fran ran straight to the keeper and ...... again the goalkeeper made the fantastic save. The last 15 minutes it went only one way again, it was a miracle that Sporting didn’t score. But the score stayed 0-1

Dulcie Gill Annual Golf Tournament In Association with The Courtyard Restaurant and TORREGOLF.EU Sat 5th October This years tournament was held at Vistabella Golf Course, single Stableford and 40 players taking part in commemoration of Dulcie Gill, wife of Brian Gill. The day started early morning with breakfast for all players and a round of golf

followed by a buffet and prize giving at the The Courtyard Restaurant. The course was in immaculate condition the greens almost perfect and this brought about some high scoring. with almost a quarter of the field scoring 30 or more points. Our two lady players Anne Holland and Sue Owens both enjoyed the day although not featuring in the prizes. Only a small turn out today, 15 players on Thursday 10th October, quite a few people on holiday this week on our Golf Society day at Altorreal. But we had another lovely day of golf and good company. Stableford was the format of the day, also the finalists of our singles knockout competition, Alex Duchart and Roger Inwards played today with the dramatic finale being played out on the 18th hole. Our competition on Tuesday 8th October was the annual Captain v Vice Captain. The format was singles match-play with many of the matches going close to the wire, Charlie Stewart, the Captain was all smiles with 2 matches still to get back to the club house, he was ahead with 4 1/2 to 3 1/2. The last two teams arrived and one match was in favour of the Captain and one in favour of the Vice -Captain, a very close finish in favour of the Captain Charlie Stewart. Result 5 1/2 pts and 4 1/2 pts As there was 17 players today, Elsa Webster had the advantage, she played with the Capt. & Vice 9 holes for the Captain and 9 holes for the Vice, so she had the unique advantage of being a winner & loser in one match, and got prizes for both, well done Elsa. A most enjoyable game for most of the players, my match against Ray H was very tight and I was very fortunate to get into the lead on the 17 hole and finished 2 up, a great match. 2 Mazarron returned to winning ways with a 3-0 away victory at A D Alquerias who had started the weekend in second place in the Primera Autonomica. Despite being without the services of suspended striker, Jose Ruben, Mazarron started the game brightly playing some excellent one touch football on the synthetic grass surface. Pescao’s pass found Juanillo who cut inside but shot over the bar and at the other end debutant goalkeeper Noguera dived smartly to his right to save an Alquerias free kick. Mazarron took the lead in the eighth minute when Tico, playing in a more advanced role, found Jose Da who rifled the ball home from 12 yards. Shortly afterwards the same two combined again but this time Tico’s shot from 20 yards was easily saved by the Alquerias keeper. Next it was Pescao who ran on to a long ball only to hit his shot straight at the keeper. After 41minutes Juanillo was shown the yellow card when he thought he had made it 2-0 for Mazarron. The young striker ran on to a superb through ball from Juan

Andreo and slipped the ball into the corner of the net only for the goal to be disallowed for offside. Cecilio replaced Juanillo at half time and once again Alquerias were limited to occasional breakaways by a resolute Mazarron defence superbly marshalled by Alcaraz and Juan Andreo. Tico’s free kick after 58 minutes was met by Alcaraz who directed his header just centimetres wide of the post. However, less than 10 minutes later Mazarron increased their lead when Cecilio raced on to a long ball out of defence and bravely headed the ball over the onrushing Alquerias keeper into the net.

Two minutes later Mazarron were awarded a rather fortunate penalty when Alfonso seemed to lose his balance on the edge of the area but the referee pointed to the penalty spot. Alfonso took the spot kick himself and blasted the ball home to give Mazarron a 3-0 lead. Cecilio almost made it four after 75 minutes with an audacious lob from 35 yards which was turned over the bar at the last minute by a desperate Alquerias keeper. It was another excellent all round performance by a Mazarron team which looks more than capable of mounting a serious challenge
