corvera airport report played down

The Gobierno Regional has tried to play down the importance of the AENA news regarding Corvera Airport, which claims that the airport is not financially viable. Also, the Empresa Estatal claims a loss of 98 million euros would be caused by the closure of San Javier, which could continue operating until 2025 with investments. The Consejero Portavoz, José Ballesta,

said that AENA ‘will have to explain’ this news. He added that of the 47 other airports 49 were facing losses, including El Prat and Barajas. He suggested that the period of the current grant, 40 years, should be taken into account, and that to stick to the situation of the year 2012, which was a time of decline, would show that almost all airports were not

viable. Ballesta said the Gobierno Regional is determined to see through the commissioning of Corvera airport ‘in the shortest time possible’ after initiating the procedure for the termination of the concession to the Company led by Sacyr. He stated that the airport ‘is the fulfillment of a long-awaited deal.’

terra mitica trial looks likely to end in custodial sentences

The corruption case against the Board of Directors of Terra Mitica, the first suspicions of which were aired in 1998 after an enquiry from the Agencia Tributaria (Tax Collection Agency), and which was under investigation for two years before being archived by the judge, was reopened in 2011. It now at last looks likely to end in custodial sentences for 38 individuals, among them the Chief Executive Officer and three former directors, as well as members of the management of 25 companies. They are all accused of involvement in money laundering during the construction of the theme park. The scams were based around invoices for work that was never carried out, for inflated invoices, for bypassing the control of the Board by subcontracting works outside the control of the company; for forgery of contracts and invoices and evasion of tax and IVA. Those in the forefront of these practices include business owner Antonio Moreno Vicente Carpio, who faces a projected 53 years and four months for 19 different counts of tax evasion, forgery of invoices and money-laundering offences. General Manager Miguel Navarro, Technical Manager Antonio Rincón, and Head of Contracts Justo Valverde, none of whom currently hold these posts, face sentences of 10 years for forgery of business documents, fraud and tax evasion, whilst the CEO at that time, Luis Esteban, could be inside for 7 years. The offences date back to 1997, during the building of Terra Mítica, undertaken at a cost to the public coffers of 400 million euros, and with the encouragement of the then Alcalde and Presidente Regional of Benidorm, Eduardo Zaplana. Zaplana’s connection with the scandal is tenuous, and arises through his former brother-in-law, Justo Valverde, who entered into a contract with Vicente Conesa, CEO of the engineering and construction company

C3 Ingeniería, and Miguel Navarro. The three men formulated a scheme by which they could take over managing part of the construction of the park from the main board of directors and management team, thus enabling them to present a large number of invoices for acceptance by the finance department. These works were never carried out, and in many cases the companies quoted were in no way ever involved in any aspect of the Park. The three then recruited Antonio Rincón García, who for a ‘financial consideration’ was installed as head of the technical department, and as such was responsible for counter-signing the invoices. They formed the company Parque Temático de Benidorm, which allowed Vicente Conesa and C3 Ingeniería a means of becoming involved with the preparation of the park. In 1999 the company engaged the firm Terra Verd to undertake the landscaping and irrigation at a cost of 6 million euros, and Terra Verd then subcontracted the work, thus burying the paper trail from the scrutiny of the Board of Directors. This may have been the tipping point, as the prosecution service noticed these irregularities first. Alerted to the possibility of further scams, they followed up on other invoices, specifically those involving business owners Antonio Moreno and José Luis Rubio, with whom Conesa collaborated to ‘manipulate’ their invoicing procedures so as to avoid paying tax and IVA. It is estimated that around 4.4 million euros worth of tax has been avoided, while the amount in compensation payments is thought to be in the area of 7.8 million euros. Terra Mitica’s main shareholders are the Gobierno Regional de Valencia as well as several large high-street banks in the Comunidad Valenciana.

Poop! Poop!

It would seem that the economic crisis, certainly so far in 2013, is showing that one in three cars sold in Spain, is over ten years old. Numbers from Ganvam, the national association of motor dealers, show that sales of used cars will rise by just over 4% in 2013, compared to 2012. Juan Manuel Sa’nchez Torres, Ganvam president, remarks that the market success for second hand cars, is the “Unwitting hero of the crisis” Such has been the demand for second hand jam jars, that prices have shown a rise of around 17% in the average price. Sa’nchez Torres says these sales represent “Unfair competition” due to lower administrative cost (No mention of large profit mark up at showrooms then!), and to cap it all, the director of Spain’s DGT traffic department expressed concern as to the safety of the country’s aging car fleet. He should pop his head around the door of my local I.T.V. testing station. They do a litmus paper test on the sump oil! It seems one can’t do right, for doing wrong!

Undercarriage down, and still locked

Unless you have a spare 200 million euro in your back pocket, as sure as “Eggs is eggs” and “Submarines float and dive”, unless of course, the submarine happens to be manufactured in Cartagena, and goes by the model number S-80 (Don’t even go there!), Corvera Airport will not opening in 2013, but I’m sure we all knew that! The complex was completed some 15 months ago, but with the economic turndown generally, along with the refusal of Aena, to move out of San Javier, without massive compensation, which the concessionary is unable to pay, because the cupboard is bare, it ain’t going to happen. Public Works councillor Antonio Sevilla is not too concerned. “Several companies are interested in becoming a concessionary, and Aeromur, who were involved from the start, are still in the picture. but although it would not be legal to compensate Aeromur financially, we might look at extending their concession after the existing 40 year deadline, the door is always open” Not so Corvera, it would seem. So if owning an airport is your forte, give Antonio a call, it would make his year.

“Danny Boy to Broadsword, Danny Boy to Broadsword”

It may seem like an early start, but the main gate at around 07.45 Hrs., on either June 7th., or 14th, at the San Javier Air Base & Military Academy, would be the place to be, should you wish to join a privileged party to tour the station. As part of the 125th., anniversary of Santiago de la Ribera, a rare chance to visit this base, home of the “Eagle Patrol”, has been agreed by the Academia General de Aire. The Eagle patrol can often be seen across the sky’s of the Mar Menor, practicing their acrobatic movements. This air base is also the training centre for the Spanish Air Force. To join the visiting party, contact will have to be made with the Tourist Office in San Javier, on telephone number 968 571 704. The office tell me that they will require your name, address, telephone number, and N.I.E. number. A copy of your passport is also asked for. On a visit to the base, a couple or so years ago, I explained to the Air ViceMarshal, over coffee, as one does, that, many years ago, I took my first solo flight in a Beagle Pub, at Birmingham International Airport, then called Elmdon Airport, and that was real “Seat of the pants flying”. Can’t imagine why he suddenly found he had an urgent appointment elsewhere? I had to pay for the coffee and tortilla! Perhaps if I take my “Eye Spy Aircraft” book this time......

A woman who spent the entire day’s takings of her son’s bar in a fruit machine and tried to cover it up by reporting a break-in has been arrested. The accused, 56, from Artana (Castellón) told the Guardia Civil that two men burst into the bar at around 01.00hrs when she was cleaning the premises and one grabbed her by the neck and punched her, threatening her with a sharp object. She said the other man grabbed a bag containing 200 euros in coins and 600 euros in notes, which was the takings from that day and the day before. But police said her statement was ‘inconsistent’ and that she kept tripping herself up. She finally broke down and confessed that she had invented the story because she was afraid her son would find out she had spent nearly 800 euros on the fruit machine, and having afterwards fallen down the stairs, decided to use her facial injuries as a cover-up, saying they were the result of a violent burglary. He tells the paper, ‘In politics you have to be faithful to what you say and if you can’t do that you should leave, you should not have taken up office’. The El País piece has another headline, ‘The Judicial Power should protect the Gürtel judges from the pressure from the Partido Popular’. Other quotes from the exJudge, ‘The Infanta should have declared voluntarily and helped justice’ ‘I will intend to make the State return to the victims the goods which were plundered by the Franquist’. First reaction in the Internet Polls has been an unanimous welcome and the promise of votes. Quite how Mariano Rajoy and the Partido Popular handle this remains to be seen.

British Twin Brothers Found Dead In Fuengirola Flat

Police in Fuengirola, Málaga, have opened an inquiry into the deaths of elderly British twin brothers in their home. The two men, aged 83, were found after a neighbour reported a foul smell coming from their flat yesterday and called the police. Firefighters had to break down the door to get in. One of the men was in an armchair in the lounge and the other was lying on a bed. They both had plastic bags over their heads and parcel tape over their mouths. A postmortem is due to be carried out to ascertain the exact cause of death. Police are treating it as a suicide pact, but have not ruled out any line of inquiry, including murder. The flat where the bodies were found is on the C/ Federico Ruiz Vertedor in the popular resort town.

Spain announces Premursa confirms further reform of Cajas funding to complete

Earlier this month, Spain announced plans to control the cajas blamed for causing the country’s financial crisis, the latest measure in an overhaul of its bailed-out banking sector. The government launched a bill to restrict the regional savings banks’ lending to individuals and small businesses, it announced after a cabinet meeting. The cajas - which were traditionally regionally based lenders - diversified into property during Spain’s decadelong building boom that went bust in 2008. “What we are trying to do is return to the traditional model of savings banks - a traditional model that somehow got distorted in recent years and was the basis of the problems in the Spanish financial model,” Finance Minister Luis de Guindos announced at a press conference. This is just one of the measures Spain promised to the EU last year in return for tens of billions of euros to save its banking sector from collapse. It plans to limit a savings bank’s assets to 10 billion euros, the Ministry said in a statement detailing the plan. If a caja exceeds that size, it will have to submit its financial activities to more stringent regulation. The plan also aims to place control of the savings banks firmly in the hands of depositors, shielding the boards from political influence. It will set quotas for the proportion of seats on the board held by depositors and demand that board members have financial competence and experience. That was apparently a response to past controversies over the naming of unqualified figures with links to politicians to the boards of the cajas. Dozens of cajas were swallowed up in a mass restructuring of the banking sector following the start of the Spanish crisis. Article: www.tumbit.com

Paramount Murcia

Jesus Samper, the President of Proyectos Emblemáticos Murcianos SA (Premursa) - the promoter and developer of the Paramount theme park at Alhama de Murcia, has claimed he has secured the required investment to complete construction work on the project. According to press sources, Samper went on to confirm he had received firm commitments from investors from Saudi Arabia and Qatar, whist a number of American investment groups had expressed an interest, but were waiting to see how work on the project commenced later this year. Samper was speaking at a press conference, along with Minister of Culture and Tourism, Pedro Alberto Cruz, and the Mayor of Alhama, Alfonso Ceron, to deny rumours questioning the viability Paramount Park, and that Paramount in the USA were giving considering withdrawing their licence, despite expenditure of €36 Million. He also went on to say how he had no concerns over the Paramount Theme Park in London, set to open its doors in 2019, just 4 years after Paramount Murcia. Samper also clarified that training for the staff recruited to work in various departments at the park would commence in 2014. This is despite the fact that a dedicated office to handle their recruitment opened early in 2012. source: La Opinion de Murcia/Tumbit.com

A report published by Spain’s National Institute of Statistics (INE) has revealed how a minimum of 176,000 jobseeking Spaniards between the ages of 35-44 have left their country since the start of the protracted financial crisis. The study went on to state how the majority moved to either the UK or Spain, with 29,910 relocating to Germany during 2012 alone - up 45% on 2011. According to a report by Tumbit.com, key destinations for emmigrating Spaniards were Italy (12,000); Greece (10,000) and Portugal (4,000). Some 6,000 Spaniards relocated to the UK, where total numbers are now thought to stand at around 30’000 arrivals since 2008. However, it is difficult to state final and exact number as many Spaniards have kept their official Residential status as being in Spain. One anomaly that has not been answered by the INE is why so many Spaniards - who are suffering the effect of 27.2% unemployment at home - would choose to relocate to Greece with a 26.4% rate of unemployment, when the European average is 10.9% ?

Alicante Airport Traffic Jumps in April

Recent figures released by AENA has revealed how the number of flight to Alicante’s El Altet Airport increased by 10.1% in April, compared to April 2012. Passenger numbers from the UK alone increased by 7% over the same period. However, the largest growth came from the Scandinavian countries, with a 36.3% increase in passengers from Norway; 33.4% from Sweden and 79.1% from Denmark. A total of 827,764 passengers flew through the airport on 6,055 flights during April 2013. As far as the first quarter of the year was concerned 2,324,716 passed through the airport, increasing 3.2% more than the same period last year, with the number of operations increasing by 1.0%. As far as the number of flights are concerned 2,537 operations came from the UK (+10.9%); 911 domestic operations (-18.3%); 407 flights to Norway (+52.4%); 365 flights to Germany (+17.7%); 350 flights to the Netherlands (+23.2%); 257 flights to Sweden (+49.4%) and 129 flights to Denmark representing an 111.5% increase.

before the 1800’s and anybody can take part on this annual historic pilgrimage, you’re even provided with a straw hat, scarf and walking cane with a spring of Rosemary attached for this very special occasion and get to keep them as a souvenir. Half way along the route, refreshments were provided to all the walkers, this traditionally is aniseed flavoured rolls served with muscatel wine. At this stopping point the Mayor came forward to thank Sue, volunteer Jenny, and Taffeta for joining in with the celebrations of the day and also to introduce his Grandson to Taffeta. The Mayor himself is great lover of animals and the countryside and has his own assortment of farmyard birds. Rojales Council feels that the Foundation is now part of Rojales and that we should be part of the various fiestas throughout the year, they are even going to hold a special welcome home fiesta for Faith when she returns back to the centre from Barcelona. The EHCRC Foundation had the honour of being invited to lead the San Isidro Pilgrims Walk with Taffeta the miniature horse, leaving from the church in Rojales at 8am and going to the Recorral Park. Behind Taffeta there were six magnificent horses, then the statue of Saint Isidro, carried in turn by the strong men of Rojales, plus the Mayor and dignitaries, followed by a long line of pilgrims. Saint Isidro is the patron Saint of farmers and dates back to

Co-Founder Sue Weeding said “Isn’t it incredible that a little miniature horse left to die five years ago, is now leading an important procession through Rojales and being greeted by the Mayor. We at the rescue centre think it’s wonderful to have become part of the great community of Rojales”. Not too many years ago we would all be drooling at a team that included the likes of former International footballers Andy Dibble, Colin Hendry, Asa Hartford, Peter Barnes, Uwe Rosler and Tommy Booth. We would have paid a lot of money for the privilege of seeing them line up. Well now the opportunity will cost you almost nothing, just your loose change, as they and others, will be turning out on Friday 7 June at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Torrevieja against ‘Team Skala’ , a side thought to comprise, for the most part, of Guardia Civil Officers stationed in the locality. Joe Corrigan has also been named in the squad but it is thought that he will turn out only in a managerial capacity as he continues to nurse an injury. They will be joined by Eric Nixon, Ali Pickering and Les Chapman, amongst others, who will be confirmed over the coming days for the match next Friday. Fans are also being offered the opportunity to go back

to the Marinasol in Cabo Roig with the players after the game and to play golf alongside the Legends at Las Colinas Golf Course on the following day. This will be the third occasion that the team have visited the area in recent years, both previous occasions being an unlimited success. Whilst in the area they will by staying at the Marinasol where they will be delighted to meet football fans regardless of their allegiance. Many of the Legends are still very much involved in the game either as managers, coaches or media pundits so this is an opportunity that football fans here on the Costa will not want to miss. Look Good Feel Great

The Welfare Reform Act of 2012 starts to really take a grip

I was speaking last week with an ex-colleague in the Welfare Rights Unit at the council in London where i used to work concerning an appeal for Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) of a client of mine here and it is clear that aspects of the Welfare Reform Act of 2012 are starting to really hurt people. She said that a staggering 83% of people that they have helped claim ESA over the last year have been turned down at the assessment stage. In the light of

kim clark benefits consultancy Do you suffer from mobility problems, breathlessness/pain or falls/stumbles?

Do you need help washing / dressing or supervision? You could be entitled to extra income by claiming UK sickness / disabililty benefits while living in Spain

recent allegations by Dr Greg Wood who has resigned from his post at Atos Healthcare, who carry out the work capability assessments, that claimants were not assessed in an ‘even handed way’ we should probably not be surprised. He claims that evidence for claims was never put forward by the company for doctors to use and that medical staff were told to change reports if they were too favourable to claimants. The fact that 37% of decisions appealed against were successfully overturned shows that there are serious flaws in the assessment process. Coupled with the fact that, unless you get put in the support group, contributions-based ESA is only payable for 365 days then it is clear that many people who have worked and paid contributions but no longer find themselves fit for work are going to be considerably worse off. For people living outside of the UK to be able claim to Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or Attendance Allowance they must show genuine and sufficient link to the UK which means that they or a family member must be in receipt of a payment such as retirement pension

or contributions-based ESA. Crucially, those people who lose their ESA could therefore also lose their entitlement to DLA. Disability Living Allowance (DLA) is being replaced by Personal Independence Payment (PIP) as of June 2013 and the signs are already that even more people are going to be deprived of money that is so crucial to maintain an independent life. The criteria for the mobility component have been dramatically toughened. Under DLA regulations a person is entitled to the higher rate if they are ‘unable or virtually unable to walk’ and usually claimants are considered to be virtually unable to walk if they cannot walk more than 50m but, under the new PIP scheme, the relevant distance is reduced to 20m. However, the High Court has granted permission for a full hearing of the judicial review challenge to the government’s introduction of the more stringent qualifying criteria for mobility benefit. What is extremely concerning is that the government had already projected figures of how much the introduction of PIP will save from the welfare budget before a single person had been assessed. Equally disturbing is the fact that most people will be assessed by private organisations – including Atos - despite proclamations that targets do not need to be met.

Throughout my time in welfare rights i have seen at close hand the considerable and positive impact that claiming disability benefits has on people’s lives. That extra income enables people to remain as independent as possible and helps reduce the link between poverty and health. There are countless people living here in Spain who would undoubtedly be entitled to more income by claiming disability benefits but many are unaware of what is out there for them. Feelings of pride and not wanting to be a burden on the state coupled with wanting to preserve their independence often put people off. Difficulty accessing forms, finding the nature of them overwhelming and wanting to avoid intrusive The Barbershop at questions deter many even Quesada Country Club further. Previous negative experience of claiming benefit along with a lack of knowledge Modern & of conditions of entitlement and Traditional Gents failure to challenge negative decisions means that many more Hairdressing miss out. Neighbourhood Watch in Spain Distraction theft” happens everywhere, ATM’s at banks, markets and recently an increase in reports at super markets. The most recent case involved a Swedish visitor who on landing at Alicante airport decided to shop at Mercadona supermarket before going to his home, as he walked down an aisle he was distracted by a young women who asked him a question - the conversation lasting only a few seconds - unfortunately this was enough time for the accomplice to steal holiday money of 800 euros from a buttoned pocket in his “safari” shorts. By time he

realised that this had happened the thieves had long gone. One of the least expensive and successful ways of preventing this type of theft has for many years now been to wear a “money belt” or similar and even then to carry with you only what is necessary for the shopping trip. Also due to thieves targeting tourists if you have rented a hire car it is very important that you do not advertise this fact and carefully remove the hire car sticker from the rear of the car for your increased safety. Regards Scott Blair. Press and Communications Officer.

Declared ‘Timanfaya’ during the year of 1974, the protected national park located in the southwest region of the island of Lanzarote, is a purely mother-nature created sight. For some six years during the 18th century, this area of land experienced a series of violent volcanic eruptions, in which more than thirty massive explosions of molten lava shook the island, destroying up to eleven settlements. Although the air was filled with thick, black fumes, and entire villages were buried and destroyed under ash and volcanic gravel - known as picón - fortunately and miraculously there were no casualties. The people of these villages deserted their homes early enough to avoid any fatalities this natural disaster could have caused. It was one of these destroyed villages that the Timanfaya name was acquired from, which now - marked by its signature ‘El Diablo’ (The

Devil) entrance sign - flaunts its vast territory to the many tourists, outdoor explorers and geology lovers that visit,. Stretching from the Montañas del Fuego (Fire Mountains) out to sea, the park covers approximately 51 square kilometres of ground between the two municipalities of Yaiza and Tinajo. Unguided walking around the park is not permitted due to potential dangers of fragile rocks and unstable lava tubes. Visitors can explore the park by either a forty minute guided El Diablo bus tour, which departs every twenty minutes and offers recorded commentaries in three languages; or by foot

on a three hour walk guided by a park ranger. The walks are the most popular and only held four times a week, therefore pre-bookings are highly encouraged. There is also an option of camel rides through the park too, which departs from near the visitors centre near Mancha Blanca. The glass-walled El Diablo restaurant in the centre of Timanfaya Park hosts spectacular views over the volcanic landscape out towards the sea. Together with its impressive César Manrique-designed barbeque and cast-iron grill, which uses geothermal heat from the ground to cook food, visitors can enjoy a unique and rustic dining experience.

Credits for small companies in Spain may be provided by Germany

Germany may agree to provide ‘special credits’ to small and medium-sized businesses in Spain and Portugal to help them grow, and later to those in Greece. According to German national daily Der Spiegel, the central European country’s equivalent of Spain’s Official Credit Institute – the KfW – is considering investing up to 10 billion euros in small companies and sole traders’ enterprises in the southern EU nations, taking advantage of currently low interest rates. Finance minister for Germany Wolfgang Schäuble (pictured), in a letter to economy minister Philipp Rösler, compared the situation of Spain, Portugal and Greece vis à vis the rest of Europe with that of East and West Germany before the fall of the Berlin Wall. According to Schäuble, many southern European countries are in a similar condition to East Germany – without the communism, but in terms of poverty and financial struggle – and that before the country was united, West Germany used to send aid to its counterparts behind the Iron Curtain. He said companies in crisis-torn European countries would benefit greatly from increased access to capital markets and would be able to create jobs or, at least, by staying afloat, not contribute to the jobless figures. The German finance minister said Spain, Portugal and Greece were ‘in danger of losing an entire generation’.

Non-drinking drivers get 20-euro petrol vouchers

Free petrol for young drivers in the early hours of the morning who can prove they have not drunk any alcohol is being given by Huelva city council in the south-west of Spain.

Numerous checkpoints have been set up around the city to breathalyse drivers and those who show a zero alcohol

reading will be given petrol vouchers.

To sign up to the scheme, they will be given a ‘points card’ upon registering at the city hall and showing their driving licences, and each breathalysing test they undertake which shows a reading of 0.0 will earn them one stamp. They will get a 20-euro Solred petrol

coupon once they have passed four tests with a 0.0 result, but if any readings are higher than these, their points card will be taken off them. This is part of a campaign by local authorities to convince young revellers to take it in turns among their friends to drive and not to drink

Jobseeker who ‘sang’ his CV on the metro taken on by national TV show

An unemployed graduate who ‘sang’ his CV whilst playing the Ukelele on the Barcelona metro has been given a job by Spain’s Channel 6, La Sexta. Enzo Vizcaíno’s performance on the train went viral on YouTube and hit national headlines, after he joked in song about his experience as a community manager – social network administrator for companies – and Ukelele-player. Vizcaíno has a degree in journalism, but has despaired of finding work after months on the dole following redundancy. As a result of the video

he made of himself singing his curriculum vitae, he has been taken on by the national TV station after La Sexta programme Así nos va (‘this is how it’s going for us’) called him to invite him onto the show to talk about the metro experience. Soon after this, the programme, which is presented by Florentino Fernández, employed him as a scriptwriter and contributor. He has now started work with the channel, having gone literally overnight from anonymity and propping up the giro queue in the job centre to being part of a national TV show and an internet sensation after his video clocked up more than half a million hits.

BEING A RESIDENT OF SPAIN OR NOT CAN MAKE A CONSIDERABLE DIFFERENCE TO CAPITAL GAINS TAX. NASTY SURPRISE: HAVING WHAT EVERYONE CALLS THE RESIDENCE CERTIFICATE IS NOT PROOF OF TAX RESIDENCY AND IF YOU DO NOT HAVE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WILL BE TREATED AS A NON RESIDENT AND 3% OF THE SALES PRICE WILL BE HELD BACK. Q. I have sold my house. I was under the impression that I was a resident and that the 3% retention for non residents would not be applicable, but the notary said that my residence certificate was not proof of residency and that he had to treat me as a non resident which means that 3% of the sales price was retained and paid into the tax office. How can the resident certificate not be proof of residency? A. What the notary is saying is correct. It is a common nasty surprise at the notary lately suffered by sellers that are not getting the correct advice prior to selling. The new resident certificates with ought photograph issued by the police do not state you are a tax resident of Spain. What it says is that you are a resident of Europe. To be able to be treated as a tax resident of Spain at the moment of sale, you need to provide the notary with a certificate issued by the tax office in Spain stating that they consider you a tax resident of Spain. This needs to be requested in advance of going to the notary by your solicitor or yourself to avoid the 3% retention. Some notaries will also accept as proof of residency your Spanish tax returns. If you are thinking of selling, it is important to find out from the tax office well in advance if your status is that of a resident or non resident, and the certificate issued by them needs to be taken to the notary the day of signature Michael Davies is a Spanish Abogado and has been practicing law in Almería since 1993. These days, there are paints to decorate every surface in the home, from melamine to ceramic tiles. Many of these formulas require no specialist preparation Crown’s Cupboard Makeover Paint is available in 12 colours and does not need a primer. There are also multisurface paints, such as B&Q Bedec MSP Multi Surface Paint, which can be used on everything from plastic to masonry. Colours Everywhere for walls, ceilings, woodwork and radiators, and Areas such as bathrooms and kitchens benefit from durable, mildew-resistant coverings, which are available in premixed colours. However, for the more discerning, Dulux Kitchen & Bathroom paint can be mixed in any one of its 1,200 colours. Specialist

paints also include some exciting new finishes, such as suede effects, metallics and high-sheen lacquers. Judy Smith, colour consultant at Crown, suggests an accent wall in one of these to lift a neutral scheme. Crown’s Feature Wall range, which includes eight metallic finishes, nine bright colours and a highly reflective Pure Brilliant White, comes in convenient 1·25 litre tins. If you have a timber floor that’s not particularly attractive or is made from a patchwork of old and new wood, paint makes the perfect disguise. There are plenty of choices - all the colours from Farrow & Ball are available as floor paint and Nordic Style offers an elegant selection, too. Alternatively, a timber

If you are grappling with the problem of choosing a woodwork colour to go with neutral walls, check out Architectural Colours by David Oliver, the founder of Paint & Paper Library. He arranged his off-whites for ceilings, cornices, walls and woodwork in chromatical groups and the concept has been so well received that chromatically arranged colours, such as soft greys, greens and pinks, have been introduced. For a scheme that demands dark woodwork colours, take a look at the excellent Flemish Colours range by Siecle, or the Cotswold collection by Ecos. nt - the essential guide... When it comes to instantly reviving and refreshing a room, paint stakes its claim as a key decorating tool... are available for all surfaces, from woodwork to metal, and for interior and exterior use. The advantages of these paints over oil-based ones is that they are cleaner, have less odour and are more environmentally sound. Brushes can be rinsed clean with water. SOLVENT OR OIL-BASED PAINTS are used where a tough, durable finish is required for interior and exterior timber, masonry and furniture - although, as mentioned above, the new generation of acrylics and multi-surface paints offers viable alternatives. In general, brushes need to be cleaned with turpentine or white spirit. MAKE-UP AND QUALITY All paints are made of four key ingredients: pigments, binders, liquids and additives. Generally speaking, the more pigment used to make the paint, the better the quality it will be: a ratio of 30 to 45 per cent binder and pigments by volume indicates a paint that will be durable and

provide good coverage and lasting colour. Specialist masonry and exterior woodwork paints are now available in many of the sophisticated colours offered for interiors. For example, the Weathershield range of satin and gloss exterior paints. Dulux features innovative shades such as Wild Berries and Wild Roses. When choosing colours for exterior surfaces, consider the style of the brickwork or masonry of your home along with the colours used on nearby buildings, so as to pick colours that are sympathetic to these surroundings. Colours for fences and sheds should be selected with the same criteria in mind Technical advancements are constantly being made to improve the life span, durability, wear and performance of exterior paints. Sandtex’s Microseal technology gives its paints “two-way” breathability where moisture and air can move out of the home, but rain and wetness cannot

penetrate from outside. Masonry paints come in a wide variety of finishes, from textured to ultra-smooth. Opt for a texture if you need to disguise fine surface cracks. If you favour traditional finishes, then consider limewash, which is available from specialists such as Francesca’s Lime Wash. The beauty of this paint is that it will mellow and weather with time. However, do check with the supplier first to ensure that the surface is suitable for this finish. Distemper - A traditional water-based paint made from animal and natural resins, which dries to a velvety matt finish. Primarily used on ceilings and plaster mouldings, and to give furniture an aged effect, but not suitable for areas of high wear. Available to order from specialist companies. Eggshell - Traditionally refers to an oil-based paint with a silky finish, suitable for interior walls and woodwork. Water-based alternatives are

now available. Flat or Dead-Flat Oil Provides a completely flat, oil-based finish. Generally used on walls but not suitable for areas of high wear. Gloss - These paints have a high sheen level and are usually used on woodwork. Limewash - Made from slaked lime and water, this paint is good for porous surfaces such as brickwork, render and plaster and gives a chalky finish. It is available from specialist companies. Matt - Describes paints that give a flat, non-reflective finish. It is ideal for walls and ceilings that are not perfectly smooth. Satin or silk - Water-based vinyl or acrylic paint for walls in high-wear areas, such as hallways and kitchens. A satin finish will be slightly shinier than silk. Satinwood or semi-gloss These paints are commonly used on woodwork, such as skirting boards. This sheen level is between eggshell and gloss.

Continuing from last week, with my amazing ‘Walk with Falcons’ with the International School of Falconry located within Las Colinas Golf in Campoamor - what I did not tell you, is that although I met Margarita the Eagle Owl, I also got the chance to get up really close and personal with her, as she sat on my arm and I was able to stroke her. It was not the first time that I had seen an Eagle Owl from an amazing vantage point, as on one of our Monday walks we had gone along the ridge, and obviously startled some birdlife, and looked down and caught 3 eagle owls flying off from the rocks beneath us. It was an amazing sight, and it was even more spectacular as we were just above them looking down and could fully appreciate the span of their incredible wings. The European Eagle Owl is a very large and powerful bird with a wingspan of 160 / 168cm and the total length can range from 56 to 75cm so you can imagine it was an impressive sight, especially with three of them. Although Margarita tolerated my stroking her, she was not happy with the handler and was hissing at him and in excess of 3kg, my arm was starting to feel the weight. I also noticed that she was on her own and I was advised that this is because if she was in the cages with the other raptors, she would simply attack and eat them. Because of the sheer size and their aggressive nature, this makes them the most dominant bird of prey (both nocturnal and diurnal) wherever they are found. Very occasionally they are killed by large Eagles, but more often it is they who prey on other Raptors. They prey mainly on mammals – chiefly rabbits and hares – but

they will also take birds up to the size of a large Buzzard, which are usually taken from night roosts. Large Eagle Owls have been known to take roe deer and foxes, which they kill by crushing their skulls with huge, powerful feet. I did not realise that The European Eagle Owl was a native of Britain until the latter part of the 19th Century and became extinct there largely as a result of man’s persecution. However, they are making a comeback and this is because unbelievably they have been added to several fox hunts in the UK to get around the law following the ban on ´hunting´with dogs. In the first line of the act reads “A person commits an offence if he hunts a wild mammal with a dog.” - which is clear, except there are a further five words in that sentence: “... unless his hunting is exempt.” Those five words - and the list of exemptions in schedule one of the act - have been the salvation of hunting. One exemption in particular has been manna to the hunters: “Flushing a wild mammal from cover is exempt hunting if undertaken for the purpose of enabling a bird of prey to hunt the wild mammal.” Hunts therefore, have begun using packs of hounds in combination with birds of prey. To comply with the law, the huntsman must go into a wood or undergrowth with his hounds and try to flush a fox out in the direction of the bird. Since 2004/2005 about 20 hunts bought in Eagle Owls and Golden Eagles in the belief that they are acting within the law. However they are not the first to use Birds of prey, in this case the Golden Eagle, to hunt Foxes as ,In Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Mongolia, is still used to hunt game as large as foxes and wolves, often on horseback, so maybe not so unusual after all. However, it was not that long ago that according to some the ‘same detestable English Puritanism’ nearly extinguished the ancient sport of falconry in the British Isles in the 17th century, but now Falconry it is back to enjoy it’s ‘World Heritage status’ in the 21st century. It’s doing a lot of good to in making use of the natural relationship between raptors and their prey, today, falconry is not only used in combination with hunting but as ‘pest control’ - to control pest birds and animals in urban areas, landfills, commercial buildings, and airports. in many countries. At the East Midland Airport an eagle owl named ´Elliot´ is being used as an environmentally friendly bid to keep the skies free from other birds and in Europe, a golden eagle called ´Cheyenne´ is being used to stop foxes and hares running onto an Italian airport runway. This was only introduced as a ´last resort´as traditional measures, such as fences and repellents failed to keep the animals away. In Spain, apparently similar birds have been employed to the same effect. So you too, could get close and personal with Margarita at Las Colinas - it would certainly make a great birthday gift or anniversay celebration and it is affordable day out for the whole family. Cycle Route 26 Quesada to Callosa de Segura Leave Quesada and head for Benijofar, turn left at the traffic lights (cobbled area) cycle downhill for about 300metres then turn right just before the edge of the town, cycle down past the houses until you come to orange / lemon groves where you’ll find a track through them which takes you to the river. At the river turn left and cycle over the bridge and down the ramp then go left and cycle alongside the river until you come to the outdoor Community pool leave the track here and cycle down through the houses until you come to a main road . You are now at the main road through Formentera. (be careful as there are many oneway streets) Turn left and cycle out of Formentera on this road until you come to a camino road on your right (Approx 1km), take this camino and cycle it, up and over the bridge across the CV91 Guardamar road and just stay on this camino until you come to the next junction (road to Daya Nueva) where you go straight over following it through some lovely cultivated land with beautiful views until you come to the next road where you turn left. Follow this road all the way until you come to Dolores (4 kms). Go straight on at the first roundabout and turn left at the second roundabout and right at the third one then first left along a lovely little Spanish road that takes you passed some houses and out into beautiful countryside. Dolores is a lovely place to stop for some refreshments by the way as there are numerous bars and restaurants to choose from. Keep on cycling staying on this road until you come to a junction, turn right here and

follow this road which will take you into Catral. Turn left at the end of this road and follow the By Gary & Ly road through Catral heading for nn Cyclogical Crevillente. Quesada At the edge of town you will come to a large roundabout follow it all the way round to the left and take the bridge over the AP7 where you come to another roundabout where you take the exit for Casicas. This is another lovely quiet camino, follow it until you come to traffic lights (approx 4kms ) where you turn left and immediate right, follow this camino all the way into Callosa, you will end up cycling alongside the rail line for the last couple of kms , be careful crossing the line as you enter the Town. When asked why it had taken the government so long to create the new law, vice-president Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría (pictured) said that the cabinet had been obliged to approve a series of legislative initiatives ‘urgently’ since they had a time-limit for these after winning the general elections in November 2011. She added that the government had agreed to give automatic residence rights to all foreigners who bought properties exceeding 500,000 euros in value – considerably more than the initial 160,000-euro value initially planned – as well as anyone who purchased national debt to the value of two million euros or more, and anyone investing significant amounts in the country, including setting up large companies that would provide new jobs, be in the ‘public interest’, or suppose a contribution to scientific or technological innovation and investigation. Highly-qualified professionals from abroad working for major companies of international renown, new entrants to the country who already have a job offer, and those travelling to Spain for professional training or education will also be given automatic residence.

Garzón appeals to ECHR over his being struck off for Gürtel phone-tapping

A Judge who was struck off for ‘acting outside his jurisdiction’ when investigating a high-profile corruption case has appealed to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). Baltasar Garzón took matters into his own hands with the infamous Gürtel case and arranged for telephones of main suspects to be tapped, producing incriminating evidence which is what led to the scandal being uncovered in the very beginning. He says the fact he was banned from practising as a judge as a result was ‘against the Spanish Constitution’, which effectively gives investigating judges total freedom in their related actions. To this end, Garzón says ‘what is not criminal conduct has been considered as such’ and that he has been made into a scapegoat for the ‘poor and inadequate’ laws of Spain. Garzón adds that the ministry of justice and the prosecution service ‘supported’ his actions in tapping the suspects’ telephones and that the verdict against him is therefore ‘contradictory, irrational and arbitrary’. He says he limited himself to ‘complying with his obligations’ as a judge and did not breach any legal regulations, and that to strike him off on the grounds of his investigative procedures would create ‘unacceptable legal insecurity among judges and magistrates’. Finally, he says the magistrates who passed the verdict preventing him from practising again did so by ‘creating a tailor-made criminal offence’, since ‘there is no law in Spain preventing or regulating telephone-tapping’.

Penal Court Number 3 has given a three year and two month sentence to both the owners of a pub in Valverde del Camino, Huelva. The two have been found guilty of causing acoustic contamination, and in addition both will have to pay a 3,800 Euro fine, and compensation of 7,000 Euros for the neighbours somatic and psychic disorders. The court considered it proved that the neighbours suffered acoustic contamination from 2008 to May 2010 from the pub next door. The sentence notices that the pub owners used an improper sound limiter. Article: Howard Brereton - Typically Spanish

More than 80 families have benefited so far from the housing decree issued by the Junta de Andalucía

More than 80 families have benefited so far from the housing decree issued by the Junta de Andalucía which gives those evicted the chance to live in empty property owned by the banks. In a report by Typically Spanish, it appears they can use the property for five years, and while they are there the Junta will pay the bank a small rent. Manuel García Peláez, Andalucía Councillor for Development and Housing, has said that 53 municipalities in Málaga province had signed an agreement to move ahead with the decree.

Three dead and one critical in light aircraft crash

Two men and a woman have died in a light aircraft crash and the pilot is in a critical condition in hospital. The plane, a singleengine Cesna 172 owned by the company Aviation Centre, went down in an area of scrubland near Marratxí (Mallorca), killing two men aged 22 and 36, and a woman aged 36. Emergency services say the pilot, 22, is seriously injured and has been taken to the Son Espases hospital in Palma after having been attended to at the scene. Firefighters were called out to deal with the blaze which flared up when the plane hit the ground, and one of the firemen and a bystander suffered minor burns when attempting to help. A full investigation is under way as to the exact causes of the crash.

Jamie Oliver is our favourite TV chef Delia is deemed out-of-date

His cheeky smile and carefree approach to cooking won the nation over when he hit our screens 15 years ago. And it seems Jamie Oliver still has our hearts today. According to a report by Mail Online, ‘The Naked Chef’ has been voted Britain’s favourite celebrity chef in a new survey, as well as the cook whose recipes we find easiest to follow at home. The survey also shows that Britons feel long time culinary queen and television staple Delia Smith is out of date, and that the famously sultry Nigella Lawson makes us fat. Jamie Oliver, 37, was picked as our number one by almost a fifth (23 per cent) of those polled - with Gordon Ramsay second (16 per cent) and Nigella Lawson third (11 per cent). The least popular was Masterchef’s John Torode,

picked by just one per cent of the 1,000 people polled by diet firm Forza Supplements. Surprisingly, the nation’s cookery queen Delia came second bottom with just two per cent of votes. Delia, 71, was also the chef voted most out of date - chosen by more than quarter of respondents (26 per cent), as being increasingly past her sell by date. Foul mouthed dynamo Gordon Ramsay was almost deemed by respondents to be outstaying his welcome on our TV screens with 12 per cent of the vote with the Hairy Bikers coming third (10 per cent). When it comes to actually picking up the spatula and heading into the kitchen ourselves, the nation’s foodies reckon that Jamie Oliver’s recipes are the easiest to follow - with 57 per cent saying his were the

most reliable. Delia came second for reliability (14 per cent) and Nigella Lawson third (8 per cent). Unsurprisingly Heston Blumenthal, who is famous for his complicated and intricate recipes such as snail porridge, came bottom with just one per cent of the votes. One of the most interesting findings is that people feel that if you cook Nigella Lawson’s recipes you are likely to have the most fun - but also most likely to pile on the pounds. It is to be expected that people fear eating the famously voluptuous chefs food will wreak havoc with your waistline. The BBC2 star’s chocolate hazelnut cheesecake, featured on her TV show Nigellissima, famously contains more than 7,000 calories. She was chosen as the

most calorific chef by 49 per cent of those polled beating the Hairy Bikers (11 per cent) and Delia Smith (9 per cent). But it’s not just eating Ms Lawson’s recipes that is why we blame her for piling on the pounds. The kitchen temptress, Nigella also makes us hungriest when we watch her shows - chosen by 31 per cent, ahead of Jamie Oliver on 30 per cent and Gordon Ramsay (10 per cent) . Managing director of Forza, who commissioned the survey said: ‘I think Jamie won the poll because of the success of his cook books. ‘Virtually all of us have got one of his books in our homes and any idiot can follow the instructions. ‘It is interesting that Delia has gone so quickly from the being the nation’s favourite

and Nigella is making us fat!

to being such a turn off. ‘We are learning to love food more and become a bit more ambitious with our cooking. It’s why so many of us are over-weight. ‘The days of Delia telling us

all how to boil an egg are long gone. It’s why Nigella is so popular. She has put the sex back into cooking. ‘She’ll make us all fat - but we don’t care because we are having so much fun.’

C O M M U NIT Y NE W S To the Editor

On Sunday 12th May I was travelling between Villa Martin and San Miguel when I found that I could not control the steering and lost control of my car which rolled several times across a field before coming to rest over a steep bank. A gentleman who had witnessed the accident stopped and called the emergency services and as I managed to stand and put my head out of the window urged me to remain still due to the precarious position the vehicle was in. Other cars had stopped and a nurse clambered down to me and held my hand, keeping me calm, until help arrived. She then acted as my translator with the Paramedics -all my Spanish went out of the window. My two good samaritans disappeared before I could thank them and I was taken away in the Ambulance but without their help it is probable that I would have been seriously injured or worse. I cannot thank them enough for giving me such support and courage. Pamela Russell San Miguel

SOLTIMES MAY 2013

If I were a garden, I wouldn’t want to be our garden. It lives life on the edge, exposed to the burning ardour of the sun and the ferocious caresses of the west wind, with the plants heroically seeking to draw sustenance from the bedrock that passes for soil. However, in the last month it has managed to rain twice, or maybe three times. Everything in the garden responded with gusto, including the weeds, to which I responded with weedkiller. But when I took our trusty sprayer from its winter hibernation, I discovered that it had become a sprayer in name only – its once virile squirt had become no more than a pathetic piddle. The fearsome wand that once dealt death was now reduced to a limp parody of its former might. To restore its flow required an operation, and confident that sprayers do not have a prostate gland nor need anaesthetics I donned my surgeon’s mask, scrubbed up and made the first incision – or rather, I dismantled the whole thing! The anatomy of a sprayer is simple, and within my understanding, josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk but even so

viewpoint alqueria - The Democratic Process I was careful to keep all the pieces tidily in order on the operating table, which was in fact Pete’s work bench. I did not want to put it all together again and find one piece left over, or that I had put it together wrong, thus creating a Frankenstein’s monster, which might subsequently turn on me before running amok and devastating every living thing in the village. I meticulously cleaned and checked each part for vital function. I even deployed a specialist tool (a bent safety pin) to clean out the little hole in the end of the wand. Then I re-assembled it, filled it with water, pumped up the pressure and pressed the trigger. Its response was immediate – a perfect circle of fine spray! Without further ado I mixed up the weedkiller and sallied forth, death on my mind and at my trigger finger. Weedkilling by sprayer is gardening made easy – no bending, no kneeling, no broken fingernails, no scrabbling around after the last remnant of root. It is a variation on Lock and Load, it is Pump and Press. I quartered the garden with a stealthy tread, my finger on the trigger, every sense tuned to Weed Alert. The instant I spied an unwelcome alien, I lined it up within the cross-hairs of my sight, and fired. I spared none, there was no escaping my eagle eye, nor evading my lightning draw and dead-eye aim. I was the Quick-Draw McGraw of the pressure sprayer!

Expert Advice – Take it with a Pinch of Salt

Most people profess to have a genuine desire to maintain a healthy lifestyle by eating the correct foods. There is it seems, much truth in the oft used maxim – We are what we eat. There is of course a vast difference between having the aspirations to do the right thing and actually doing something tangible about it. The number of fast food establishments and the huge range of processed food and drinks available in supermarkets, gives a strong indication that the spirit might be willing with many of us, but the ever expanding flesh around the waistline is weak. But even with the most dedicated health freaks, it is no easy task to recognise just what is good and what is detrimental to our well being and once again this is all down to those frizzy haired scientists, who spend their working days shuffling around the laboratory in their baggy knitted jumpers and sandals, trying to find new ways to confuse us. Just when you think you have it cracked in the dietary

department, out comes another report telling us that what we had hitherto been told about the health benefits from this food or that, is now a load of old horlicks and moreover, is doing us great harm. I came to the conclusion a long time ago, that my reasoning when deciding which foods to embrace or to give the boot, should be – If in doubt, think natural. I have always loved that simple food, the egg. Fried, boiled, poached scrambled, it doesn’t matter, where would we be without them and just ask my wife who it is that makes the best omelettes around . . . no, not Jamie Oliver . . . me! There was a time when I made an effort to cut down on the number of eggs I ate in a week because, we were told, eggs are high in cholesterol and should be consumed in moderation. I have looked at the information available and who am I to disbelieve it, but equally important are the other foods we select for our daily needs to go along with them. It’s the same with butter. I simply love the stuff. Nevertheless I was gradually persuaded to give up this fatsaturated poison for the health giving benefits of vegetable oil spreads of one brand or another. Although I was forced to believe the hype that this

By Colin Bird : badbirdnow@gmail.com

would make me a leaner, more robust individual able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, there is no advertising executive alive who was ever going to convince me that it tastes like the real thing. Can’t believe it’s not butter? I bloody well can! And then we had the new miracle additive; the ingredient that not only guarded against heart attacks, strokes, Nile Fever and ingrown toenails, but actually reduced cholesterol in the blood – at least according to Gloria Hunniford in the TV ads. Methuselah will have nothing on me I thought. I will eat five kilos a day and live forever. But then twelve months ago, having endured the misery of consuming this bland sludge over several years, and observed the manufacturing process and the dirty grey colour of most low fat spreads before the yellow dye is added; I made a conscious decision to return to my old favourite – good English slightly salted butter. Okay, it is rich in saturated fats – I have to accept that but hey, if I use a little restraint and common sense, what harm can it do. A little bit of what you fancy does you good, is another maxim that rings true to me. I’m full of maxims. Then in February, another report came out, announcing that perhaps butter was not

the villain it had been made out to be after all and that in fact, some saturated fat was advantageous to good health. I saw this as vindication for my stance on the subject and did back flips around my living room; but soon stopped when I began to wheeze and require oxygen. In fairness, the report also stressed the need for the blend of saturated and unsaturated fats including an intake of the necessary Omega 3 and 6 fats for good health. In other words, it all comes back to what most of us know but fail to practice often enough – that balance and moderation are the key factors. Common sense is the one sure ingredient to maximise on prolonged good health, but common sense as I am always banging on about, seems to be an endangered commodity in 2013. And isn’t it sensible to eat everything containing preservatives? Because if they can give your bread, cakes and soft drinks long life, then surely they will do the same for you. Stands to reason...

Of the seven hundred and eighty-five souls that comprise the population of Alqueria one hundred and fifty-seven are below eighteen and therefore not eligible to vote. Nor are they eligible to run for President. The remaining six hundred and twenty-eight are however and they did. Every person over the age of eighteen registered as a candidate for the post of President. This included the bedridden, the indifferent and the illiterate. Those who couldn’t normally string three words together eloquently and accurately completed the necessary documentation. The agoraphobic and infirm managed to negotiate the streets and byways of Alqueria to appear before the Electoral Qualifying Committee. Campaigning took on a surrealism understood only in Alqueria. Regiments of would-be politicians mounted on soap, fruit and Remitroot boxes promoted xenophobic, ill considered and totally impractical policies. The British Conservative Party looked on in envy. The prospective candidates engaged in a strange game. Stacking boxes upon boxes they tried to stand head and shoulders above their rivals. Collapses occurred frequently with untidy heaps of writhing would-be politicians becoming a frequent sight in the Pueblo. The sound of massed political doctrines being propounded resonated through the streets of Alqueria. The ballot paper resembled the cast list from the Soviet version of ‘War and Peace’. The parties represented, ranged from the ridiculous to the plain daft. One candidate stood on the ‘free roller-skates for over eighties’ ticket while another wanted ‘Abyssinian Goat Shirling’ legalised. On election day the turn out was one-hundred percent, the sight of so many exercising their constitutional right to elect a head-ofstate, a privilege not afforded in some western democracies was uplifting. No-one could fail to be stirred by the sight, not shaken perhaps but certainly stirred. Counting was quick and predictable. One vote for each candidate apart from Loco Paco. Paco became so confused by the catalogue of names on the ballot paper he put his cross by the printers name. Inky Pedro the printer, lived happily in Madrid unaware of the fickle ballot paper of fate. He was naturally surprised when the letter dropped on his mat naming him as joint President of Alqueria. He changed his name, donned dark glasses and hid in the roof space peering through the slates like a cornered lynx. Loco Paco became the only constituent in the village with six hundred and twenty-seven people to represent him. A two party system tends towards democracy while any more can see a candidate elected even though the majority of votes are for others. The Alquerian result became much debated, held by radical idealists as a model for the future but by everyone else as ruddy ridiculous. Perhaps Alqueria’s electoral process needs some tinkering?

...remember to say you saw it in the SOL TIMES

SOLTIMES MAY 2013

As promised, Today we will find ways of making sure that information that has been deleted is truly “gone”! Last time we looked at the way the Disk stores the information, the weaknesses within the design and the ways in which this information can be recovered. Today, we will look at the methods and programs, that will IRREVOCABLY remove all recoverable traces of information. We have looked at how your information is stored to the disk and how, with expertise and patience, we can retrieve it again. So, we need a little revision before we move on. All information is overwritten, either in part or completely, at some time or other. There is usually enough information left to be able to re-create the original information, either, completely or partially. Ever since “secrecy” was introduced into the use of computers, there has been a need to completely remove all traces of sensitive information. In “day’s gone by”, you might have burned the piece of paper then spread the ashes to the four winds, possibly ate it or found some way to completely destroy the information. As we have seen it isn’t quite as easy with computerised storage, but there is a method that will produce a result similar the “good old fashioned” way. We have seen that if you over-write your file it becomes far more difficult to recover. So, what if you deliberately write and re-write over the same information a number of times. This would make it even more difficult to get the original back! How do we check that the process is working? What if we used a pre-defined pattern of information, for example, overwrite with a string of “0’s”? We could then read and check that they had been written! Now change the string to “trev you are a totally awesome” or some such non-sense, write it and then read it to check that it is written properly. Using this method it would be possible to achieve complete anonymity. There are a number of wipe options that are commonly in use for a secure wipe. Option 1 is the longest and most thorough is a method that overwrites the information 35 times. Option 2 is a US government recommended wipe that uses 7 re-writes. This doesn’t take as long (hours instead of days!) with almost the same security (almost impossible to recover anything) as the 35 re-writes. Option 3. Also US government but only 3 rewrites. This method is great for destroying your information and also for “Once a month” cleaning of the “unused” space on the disk. Option 4. Is the quick wipe of the PseudoRandom one pass and even with most recovery programs it will be impossible to recover. Fortunately, none of us have to be a computer genius, to be able to do this as there are a number of programs “out there” that will do it for you. The one I use is called “Eraser” and can be found at; “http://eraser.heidi. ie/”. I have used this program for years and never been able to recover anything that has been overwritten more than 3 times! It is free (now there is a surprise!) and does what it says on the tin. If you choose to try it the rest of this article will help you set it up! When it has been installed, you will see a window that has a menu bar (at the top). Click on “Edit” → “Preferences” → “Erasing”. On the tab marked “Files” you will see all the wipe options that are available to you. I use the 3 rewrite wipe to balance speed and security. This is my “day to day” file wipe choice. Now if you look again at the tabs the other one is marked “Unused Disk Space”. This is the once a month or twice a year option and should be a good, leave it all night, clean. My choice is the 7 rewrite US government wipe. Leave all the other boxes as they are and press OK. Now you are set-up and ready to go. Have fun playing with the program but beware – once the file is gone, it is gone! La Vida Fayre is on Thursday 30th and I will be there to provide answers and solutions to your computing problems. See you there!

REVIEW it...

Rosalind’s Sister by Tara Scott-Page “I am everything you ever feared in your life. Someone would pay one way or another for the filth and humiliation suffered. Bitter Sweet Revenge.” Rosalind McKinley is a tough 28 year old cookie, ambitious and extremely determined to leave her unhappy past well and truly behind her in Indiana and an abusive, sexist lout of a father unwittingly following in sister Shirley’s footsteps who had long since escaped this drudgery. Both girls carry a family portrait, sentimentally showing two young girls standing in a park, one 5 years of age the older one, 15. A lifelong bond and inevitably, essential to the plot and the thriller element of this story. Will they meet up and be reunited? Rosalind undergoes a dramatic transformation; a new persona emerges with “a tinge of quality for a woman of obvious quality.” Leonora Carrington-Jones’ love affair with Manhattan, New York begins at the salubrious Carlisle hotel, synonymous with wealth and power, working for Madame Durand. Our girl aspires towards grasping this opportunity firmly in both arms, embracing wonderful opportunities through fair or foul means. She can exploit opportunities and manipulate her men to suit her needs. Her own shot in the power stakes? “There was money to be extracted from the silk lined pockets of the rich and famous today and she wanted her fair share.” It is 1976 and Leonora has this vision of being a hair stylist to the stars and lover to one or two British lords or realistically, their athletically suitable sons. So, what is missing from the life of this successfully popular stylist? A handsomely wealthy, eligible bachelor perhaps? Or even a married man? Not just anyone. Leonora craved the powerful and wealthy. And as luck would have it, the most beautiful man she had ever seen enters her life and sweeps her off her feet. Powerful yes, wealthy yes but also married. The wrong type? The dangerous type. Like playing with fire. Hareb bin Aziz al Hareb, a Saudi Prince is a man of considerable substance and looks a million dollars. Leonora was completely absorbed by the near hypnotic quality of his deep dark brown eyes and the whirlwind of a passionate love affair is kindled.

But fire burns and it can easily destroy. His stay in New York is for business and once he returns to the Middle East a love-sick, forlorn Leonora agrees to meet him in Dubai, excited by the formulaic smells of the orient with its spices, exotic fruits and the salty sea air. Atmospheric and exhilarating. Our heroine fantasizes over her dream man appearing in the misty distance mounted on his white Arab stallion on a mission to whisk her up and away to his tented, desert palace of love. Full of anticipation and excitement like the fairy tales. But reality and fantasy are poles apart and pigs don’t fly so poor Leonora becomes enmeshed in a poisonous web of deceit, lies and more abuse. How can love turn so sour, transform dreams of love to ones of despair? Survival meant letting go of her dreams and her dream man. In spite of her betrayal and distress she holds on to a thread of hope that they would indeed ride off in to a desert sunset together. Dream on naïve one. Ironically salvation in the form of Susan aids the mentally battered, bruised, physically nauseous and disillusioned Leonora, fighting for her life, for her survival in an alien world where females are powerless and exploited for the pleasures of men. A long way from home, almost friendless and alone and isolated. Easy prey. But some women are made of stronger mettle and can look danger in the eyes without flinching and seek retribution such as an eye for an eye without suffering the pangs of guilt. Even murder. Amidst this erotic tale of love and despair, Rosalind’s sister fits in there somewhere but that’s something you’ll have to work out for yourself. It’s warmer here

before I left I got a text from my mother saying ‘bring warm clothes and it’s raining too!’ Just the sort of unwelcome travel advice anybody dreads. A quick look on a weather forecasting website confirmed that Britain was scheduled to be under feet of snow with a hurricane and biblical flood thrown in for good measure. Landing at Gatwick it was cats and dogs and the mercury was in single digits. Yet within a few hours the sun was shining and apart from a brief hail storm and a cloudy day the forecasters certainly screwed it up in my favour. My 94 year old Grandmother was gravely ill and sitting by her bedside I could not help but remember the old adage that we are born unable to fend for ourselves; needing to be clothed and fed and helped with our personal hygiene and then at the end of our days we may again have to be helped in all the same For further information or advice on ways. It’s funny how priorities change As well as visiting family the other reasons for my trip were as in the past I was always happiest living in the middle of nowhere. Now however, the convenience of civilisation being twofold, I had a ticket for the last home game at Anfield where close by is great with the added bonus of Jamie Carragher bowed out after 17 years and 737 senior draught Guinness available just a few paces appearances. After the game it was a quick dash into the city centre as Mark Knopfler was in town and I had secured second row seats for a few of us. CLAPTONS GOLF SOCIETY ALENDA GOLF 17TH MAY 2013 now. Results as below. Here we are back at Alenda Golf, for many of us this is our fifth visit so we are well used to the course, and will be expecting some good scores. The sun is shining and everything is set for a good days golf. The course looks in really good condition as the Captain tees off on the first tee. There will be no longest drives today as one member remembers that we are playing here and not Altorreal. At the end of the day it was apparent that the scores were to be very close with all the winners in all categories having to go to count back. Everybody finished and we journeyed back to the Clubhouse for our normal presentation and meal. Thanks to Chris and his staff. Members please take note, Captains Day is only two months away and we need to know numbers by the next Society day out. Mainly for the course to know numbers for the meal and whether we are able to go off the 1st and 10th which will make a difference to the evening, or just the 1st. QUESADA Altorreal Golf Wednesday 22nd May 2013 It was forecast to be sunshine all the way and after the previous weeks unsettled weather we did not know what to believe. We all set off from The Sportsman Bar full English Breakfast devoured. It wasn’t long before we came to a standstill on the AP7/E15, a little worried as time moved on a quick phone call to the course was needed but we soon passed the accident that caused the hold up and Altorreal bound we were. Arriving with time to spare we all descended upon the 1st Tee. The forecast was true to its word and the sun stayed around all day. After the round Mr Stirfry decided that a re-visit to the 4th hole (Trees) was required to

search for a €15 pair of sunshades we did find them relief !!!! That’s what you get for wearing two pairs at once (unknowingly) ???? Eurogolf La Marquesa Press Report. 40 players took part in today’s competition which was a Yellow Peril game played on Thursday 23 May 2013 at our home course of La Marquesa Golf Course. The reduced field was partly due to temporary green and a large number of cancellations earlier in the week... The weather conditions were okay, nice sunshine but with blustering winds, making the club choice more of a gamble. Unfortunately one member of my team lost their putter on the front nine and had to use an iron thereafter. Needless to say we were not in the prizes and as of going to print it has not yet turned up. (we think he was wanting a new one anyway)

The results were as follows: 1st: David Gelsthorpe, Cindi Green, Tom Hull & Gill Gordon. 172 points 2nd Geoff Evans, Franco Gentili & Gill Britten 169 points 3rd Tony Stanley, Bob Shorley, Terry Sayers & Phyllis Venables. 159 points No nearest the pins due to the reduced

C.F. MOLINA 2 MAZARRON F.C. 1

The early morning trip to Molina started really well for Mazarron and they took the lead in the fourth minute. Jose Ruben was allowed to run down the right wing despite looking in an offside position during the build up. Having rounded the keeper he then squared the ball for Diego (Jnr) to tap it in to an empty net for his fourth goal in four games since returning to the Club. Mazarron should have increased their lead when a close range header from Ruben was saved by the keeper’s feet and then Cecilio blazed the ball over the bar from the resulting corner. They were made to pay for these misses when Molina equalised

previously unbeaten duo from San Javier ensuring post golf event life was as brilliant as ever, a few beers and a good old ‘crack” with the usual old jokes and hard luck stories to boot! Thanks to all from San Javier GS for a great day and many congratulations to Club 25 GS for a great first year in the Murcia League. after 18 minutes. A through ball saw Hernadez run on to it unchallenged and score. Molina then took the lead when Jesus Ramon outpaced the entire Mazarron defence to make the score 2-1 to the home team. Molina then replaced their goalkeeper and shortly afterwards a shot by Alfonso from near the halfway line hit the bar with the keeper well beaten. The linesman again made his mark 4 minutes into the second half when he was consulted by the referee about an off the ball incident. As a result Mazarron’s Clemente and Molina’s Jesus Ramon were both shown a red card, a decision which so

Regards Mick infuriated the Molina player that he was reluctant to leave the pitch for a few minutes before being finally escorted away. Mazarron should have equalized after 60 minutes when they were awarded a penalty but Ruben’s spot kick was saved. Shortly afterwards a shot from Barrachina was headed off the line. Molina should then have made the game safe when their striker rounded the Mazarron keeper Ruben only to tap his shot wide from about two yards. Despite a bout of late substitutions, Mazarron failed to make any further impact on the game and will need to beat Beniajan at home in the last game of the season to make sure they remain in ninth position in the Primera Autonomica. FC TORREVIEJA – A LOOK BACK AT THE SEASON Torry started the season with high expectations having put together a side which were expected to challenge for a promotion play-off spot. Of the new players Inarejos a flying winger of good pedigree was expected to excite as were the two ex-Catarroja forwards from the previous seasons league title winning side, Koeman and Ernesto. The latter was considered to be a “stellar” signing after being voted the leagues “Player of the Season”. Torry won their first 2 games and headed the table. They then lost form in September and finished the month lying in 12th place. They were unbeaten throughout October and climbed up to 7th place and within sniffing distance of a play-off place. They then had a decent November and climbed to 6th place and even closer to a play-off place with their last home game of the month being an emphatic 6-0 mauling of bottom club Catarroja. Their form slumped alarmingly in December and they lost central defender Pedro Lopez to an injury which has ended his career.. Also winger Inarejos left the club for personal reasons. Then the club dispensed with services of manager Casimiro Torres a game before the Christmas break. Torry went into the Christmas break without a manager and with a depleted squad lying 14th in the table. Torry brought in a new manager, Joserra during the Christmas break to try and turn things round in the New Year and the second half of the campaign. He didn’t get off to the best start and by the end of January Torry lay in 15th place. They had also lost the services of 2 experienced players, Javi Josa and Dani. In came three new experienced players , Dani Meseguer, Juan Fran and Villanueva. February showed a very slight improvement with Torry moving up a place to 14th by the end of the month. In March Torry’s results were even worse and at the end of that month Torry had slipped to 18th and in the final relegation place. It couldn’t really get much worse.

In April Torry started to turn things round and were unbeaten in the month after some good performances and climbed to 14th place in the table but still not comfortable yet from the threat of relegation. In May they won and drew their first 2 matches and moved up to 13th place in the table and clear of relegation. They lost one and won one of their last 2 games to finish a respectable 12th in the table. The pitch played a part in Torry’s woes for home games and as the saying goes “it is the same for both sides” but that said it can be a leveler and prevent any sort of free-flowing football from being played and it did. It got so bad that Torry moved across the road to play on the astroturf at the Nelson Mandela stadium. The quality of football did in fairness improve but the stadium is too open and the wind certainly gets up there. Also the club hit the usual cash flow problems towards Christmas which is hardly a motivator to the players. It is, however, the same problem throughout football in Spain and in many other countries particularly at the lower levels. Torry had some bad luck with injuries to players, particularly Pedro Lopez and Ernesto who was never fit and had his contract cancelled early in the new year as the niggling injury he had been suffering with needed rest and surgery. Torry had problems “between the sticks” with neither of the 2 youngsters Manolo or Javi Tur convincing. If only the experienced Pepitiu who played in 4 of the last 5 games and didn’t concede a goal had been signed at the start of the season. The defence generally performed well throughout the season and only conceded 2 or more goals in 10 games out of 40. Vicente was an almost ever present improved as the season progressed. Rafa was rock solid before a longish absence after having his appendix removed and was even stronger on his return and was my “Player of the Season”. Jorge had some “captains” games but again let himself down through indiscipline and missed too many

games through suspension. The central midfielder area was undoubtedly the weakest area for Torry and it was crying out for a playmaker. Abel did a good job there and so did Dani until he departed but neither were or are the most creative. Up front Luis Carlos had some good games while Gasch improved towards the seasons end but simply didn’t score enough or threaten to score enough. A shortage of creativity and goals was a problem. Koeman did his best as the lone striker for much of the season until manager Joserra changed his tactics towards the end of the season which enabled Koeman more support. His return of 12 from 21 starts proves how valuable he really was for Torry and it was clear that in some games he wasn’t fully fit but still worked tirelessly and did the business. Finally I think all the fans would like to say a big thank you to Senor Boix for keeping the club afloat and will be hoping he stays at the helm for the next 4 years. A satisfied Darrylldinho following his adopted team through another up and down eventful season. To read about FC Torrevieja access the Torry Army website www. fctorrevieja.net.
