A 32 year old man has died of a heart attack while playing football on a pitch in the Barrio de Los Gallos, in the district of Miranda, Cartagena. The 112 service was called, requesting help for a man who had collapsed at the football field on the old road between Cartagena and Murcia. The 061 services sent an emergency ambulance from the Barrio de Los Dolores and a specialised medical unit, and medical personnel tried to revive him, but without success.

Cleaning staff at the Hospital La Arrixaca have reached an agreement that will end their fortnight long strike. They have accepted a reduction in salary of around 5% (about 70 euros per month), provided that the company, Valoriza, removes the 27 dismissal orders filed last week. The company and the workers’ representatives met several times; Valoriza offering a pay cut of at least 5.9% in exchange for not carrying out any redundancies, while workers were willing to discuss a salary reduction of up to 3%. Finally, after a day of negotiations, and late into the night, the workers accepted a reduction of around 5%, together with the company promise to forego the 27 planned redundancies. The strike had closed the hospital for two days and caused the suspension of 49 operations on health grounds. Although Valoriza has pledged to keep 100% of the workers, it has not ruled out the possibility that it may apply to the Directorate of the hospital for permission to cut jobs.

A tragic accident ended in the death of a 10 year old boy in Alicante. The accident occurred in the Alicante Barrio de San Blas, in the Recinto de Fiestas set up in the city for the Festejos de Hogueras. The child was hit by a piece of metal shrapnel from a drinks can. A firecracker had been put into the drinks can, which exploded, spreading the area with sharp shards of metal, one of which hit the boy in the neck, causing a deep wound which bled profusely. He was taken to hospital in a private car and underwent immediate emergency surgery, but he died at 06.00 pm the next day. The incident is under investigation.

The third corrida will be held on 17th September, with bulls sourced from Benjumea for El Fandi, Miguel Ángel Perera and Alejandro Talavante. On 20 and 21 September two separate events will be held without horses for bullfighting students from different schools. These events and their participants will be notified in due course on display posters. The fair will conclude on September 22 with the traditional celebration on horseback, with a festejo de rejones, (lances) with bulls provided by Fermín Bohórquez for Andy Cartagena, Diego Ventura and Manuel Manzanares.

dogs receive special training to assist in situations of violence
A company in Madrid which specialises in training security dogs has extended its operations to cover the special training of dogs to protect people in situations of violence. The training teaches the dog to hit an assailant with its nose anywhere between the shoulders and genitals. The dog acts initially as a deterrent, but if the assailant displays signs of aggression, or if signalled by the handler, the dog will instantly transform from a docile pet to an ‘implacable demon’. When working the dogs wear muzzles reinforced with metal at the tip. They are always on a lead – if they were to be released their weight and strength could knock a man several metres with a brutal impact! Ángel Mariscal, a trainer with the company Security Dogs, said ‘When misused, the dog can be a weapon. To avoid the possibility of a dog falling into the wrong hands they are never sold, and candidates for them have to pass a psychological test. We do not want these animals falling into the hands of people with ‘vengeful intentions’. When not ‘working’ the dog is a domestic pet, part of the family, and only takes on its security guard role when it is muzzled and on a lead. Ángel explained that the dogs are primarily used to assist people who have suffered a serious trauma and are under a lot of stress, especially women, to make them feel safer on the street and at home. The dog helps them to relax, to leave home to attend social or therapeutic functions, to take responsibility and recover their lives. Currently, several foundations worldwide use dogs to assist in the recuperation of people who have suffered a drama in their lives, especially in cases of PTSD. The cost of training one of these animals is similar to that of other defence dogs: about €3,000. Security Dogs says it is not seeking profit, but simply to raise awareness and to show that dogs can be helpful also in cases of domestic violence.
Teulada-Moraira auditorium wins Royal Institute of British Architects prize
A state-of-the-art concert hall on the Costa Blanca has won a top award from a British organisation, dubbed the ‘Nobel Prize of Architecture’. The futuristic auditorium in Teulada-Moraira (Alicante province), designed by Francisco Mangado has been given the prestigious annual prize awarded by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), which is given to structures in European Union member States outside the UK. Runner-up awards were presented to The MBA Building and HEC Campus designed by David Chipperfield; the Pierresvives by Zaha Hadid Architects, and the Sorø Art Museum by Lundgaard and Tranberg.
Electricity bills may rise again after July
Electricity could go back up in price after falling by 6.62 per cent in April when the supply is put to auction on Tuesday this week. The production, purchase and re-sale of electrical energy is auctioned by the State every quarter, and at present the markets are showing a rise in the cost of this – and where an increase is involved, this is passed on to the consumer. Equally, a decrease is passed to the customer, but April’s price reduction is the first since early 2009, as it has been rising regularly over the past four years. Only between 40% and a half of each electricity bill accounts for energy supply, with the rest being taxes, charges and ‘toll fees’ or franchise costs levied by the State. Spain’s government has agreed to freeze all these charges for the foreseeable future, so any increase will relate purely to the cost of the supply. These government costs cover transport,
3
distribution, obligatory coal benefits, the nuclear moratorium and bonuses for renewable energy. Although the State has pledged to keep them frozen, an ‘energy reform’ aimed at mopping up the massive deficit in the service caused by income from consumers being insufficient to cover the cost of production – a debt which last year reached 28 billion euros and continues to climb. According to minister for industry José Manuel Soria, the reform will include funding cuts in regulated energy activity and the moratorium for the provision of financial benefits to new renewable energy systems off the mainland – in the Canaries, Balearics, Ceuta and Melilla – as well as setting ‘financial stability’ rules to prevent future deficits being generated. The government itself will pay two billion euros to clear up the debt.

barnes bulletin ON THE MOVE! Graham Knight, Director, Oficina de Atencio’n al Residente Internacional, is on the move. In fact, by the time this edition of Sol Times, hits the news stands, Graham will have his feet under his new desk, in his new office. Graham tells me that he has moved from his base of many years, in Calle Caballero de Rodas, a short distance towards the sea, to the new Tourist Office, which is situated on the promenade, Paseo Vista Alegre, in what was the former “Miramar” restaurant, between the Real Club Nautico (Left hand down a bit!) and the entrance to the Eras de la Sal. Graham anticipates that the combination of “Tourism” and “International Residents” will, once again, convert the “OARI” into a “Point of reference” for all international residents of Torrevieja. His office will continue to offer information and guidance on all matters concerning local administration, residents cards, NIE numbers, health services, etc., etc.. The staff will also be keen to work towards the greater integration of residents from

The new tourist office will be fitted with up to date technology to enable information concerning tourism throughout the whole of the Valencian Community, to be accessed, as well as local information regarding tourism, culture, fiestas, along with the ability to liaise with associations and charities. Graham and his colleagues will be able to offer information and advice in English, Spanish, French and German. Graham hopes that the new office will become a relevant “Point of contact” for all residents, clubs and associations. So when next taking a saunter along the promenade, drop in and say “Hello!”

It was in June 2012, that massive debts, threatened the future of this fine school in San Pedro. Now, just 12 months later, a new crisis has hit both teachers, parents, and children. It was in 2012, when accumulated debts to suppliers reached nine million euro, that “Administrators / Receivers” took over the finances of the college. It now would seem that the college has been put into liquidation, with the bean counters looking for 500,000 euro to “Off load” the college from their books and responsibilities. Is there an entrepreneur, now reading this article, that would be prepared to step in and help this excellent centre of learning? Please! The college, I learn, has been approached by three “Interested” consortiums so far, which is good news. I also understand, that the land the college is built upon, is covered by a legal covenant, in so much as only a bilingual school or college, can be built on it’s acreage. For this reason alone, San Pedro Council is keen to see this seat of learning continue, and so are backing the college all the way, to ensure a successful outcome. SOLTIMES JUNE 2013
Longest Summer So Far Of The 21st Century Started Friday At 07.04hrs
Last Friday saw the start of the longest summer in Spain in many years, having officially began at 07.04hrs Spanish time and continuing until September 22. This means summer 2013 will last for a full 93 days and 15 hours, giving an excellent boost to tourism as sunseekers have longer than ever to enjoy their holidays in Spain. The so-called longest day of the year – with 15 hours and three minutes of daylight in Madrid, compared to the shortest day which has just nine hours and 17 minutes, and is normally on December 21 – is never on the same date ever year, says the National Geographic Institute (IGN). Over the course of the 21st century, the latest start to the summer will be – and was – in 2003, compared to the earliest, which will be in 2096. The start of the astrological summer falls between June
20 and 22 in the northern hemisphere and is when the sun is at its most northern point, although in practice the ‘official’ start to the summer varies considerably from country to country and, by the same token, the ‘official’ start to the winter in the southern hemisphere does not necessarily occur on the ‘shortest’ day in June. In south-eastern Australia, the summer starts officially on December 1 and winter on July 1, whilst in Perú the summer is considered to start just before Christmas. And in practice, given that the earth orbits the sun at an angle, during the summer and winter solstices, the longest and shortest days are not necessarily on the day of the astrological start to either season. At both these points in the year, the time shown on the clock is out of synch with the ‘actual’ time as shown by the sun’s position – in 2013, the sun came up the earliest on June 14, and will set the latest on June 27. Between the tropics and particularly on the equator, there is no difference year-round between sun-up and sundown time, and little change in temperature, with no official summer or winter – merely a dry season and a rainy season, lasting typically six months at a time. And the extremes of longest and shortest days happen in the Arctic and Antarctic circles – today will see 24 hours of daylight in the North Pole and 24 hours of darkness in the South Pole.

Spain’s national anthem acquired lyrics for the first time during the Confederations Cup match against Uruguay, thanks to the BBC. La Marcha Real, or ‘Royal March’, is instrumental, but when the British Broadcasting Corporation televised the opening ceremony of Spain’s first Cup match they gave it lyrics with subtitles in English. The words were those written by Paulino Cubero, who was chosen by the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) in 2007 so that sportsmen and women from the country could sing their own national anthem rather than just humming it. But the idea never took off and the lyrics never aired in public. They included lines such as “love your land because it knows how to embrace, beneath blue skies, people at liberty,” which were shown in English subtitles – and Spanish subtitles for
Europe Sends Written Warning To Spain Over Sevilla-Almería High-speed Train
European Commissioners have sent Spain written notice over its alleged breach of EU law concerning the Sevilla-Almería high-speed rail-link. The Commission says the Spanish government has approved the plans for the AVE train across the south of the country without having firstly carried out an ‘environmental impact study’, which is compulsory under European Union law. According to the CE, the AVE will cut through an area of countryside home to endangered species of birds, and would destroy their habitat completely. They have given Spain two months to carry out the study or shelve the plans.
‘Catastrophic’ & ‘Out Of Control’: Floods In Huesca & Lleida Force Hundreds Of Evacuations
Hundreds of residents in the northern regions of Aragón and Catalunya have been evacuated from their homes as torrential rain causes flash flooding and rivers to burst their banks. The worst of the damage is near the Pyrénées and 400 people have been forced to flee their homes in the Aran Valley and in Pallars Sòbira, both in the province of Lleida, Catalunya. Roads have been blocked off, bridges brought down and homes awash, although luckily as yet nobody has been injured. Several hundred more have been evacuated in the province of Huesca, Aragón, after the river Ésera burst its banks due to a combination of the snow and ice melting and torrential rain, leading to floods in the towns of Castejón de Sos and Benasque. Authorities in the Aran Valley say the situation is ‘absolutely out of control’ and the damage has reached catastrophic proportions. They say they are ‘doing all they can’, but that the district is now ‘divided’ into three areas by the floods with each one being totally inaccessible.
Although no fatalities have been reported, mobile phone users have no signal, homes on either side of the river Garona have been evacuated and the main national trunk road is ‘an extension of the river itself’. Over 4,000 homes have no electricity and numerous villages are completely isolated, with one of them having lost three bridges which were swept away by the river Noguera Pallaressa. A camp site has also been emptied of tourists, the industrial estate in Vielha closed and schools in the town forced to shut. School buses are not running and authorities urge residents not to leave their homes or use their cars. Water is even expected to come down from above as well as rising up – dams high up on mountains are threatening to overflow. A building has collapsed in Benasque (Huesca) and the council fears a block of flats may be next. They say the bridge over the Benasque-Anciles road is likely to come down at any minute.

Spain takes action against Google on privacy
Spain has led a Europe-wide push to get Google to change its policies on collecting user data. According to Tumbit.com, Reuters reported that the U.S. National Security Agency under the Prism surveillance program secretly gathered user data from 9 U.S. companies, including Google, to track people’s movements and contacts makes the timing especially sensitive for Google. France’s data protection
watchdog (CNIL) said Google had broken French law and gave it 3 months to change its privacy policies or risk a fine of up to €150,000. Spain’s Data Protection Agency (AEPD)toldGoogleitwouldbefined between €40,000 and €300,000 for each of the 5 violations of the law, that it had failed to be clear about what it did with data, may be processing a “disproportionate” amount and holding onto it for
an “undetermined or unjustified” period of time. The CNIL, which has been leading Europe’s inquiry since Google launched its consolidated privacy policy in March 2012, said Britain, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands would be taking similar action against the world’s No. 1 search engine. Google could face fines totaling several million euros. “By the end of July, all the
authorities within the (EU data protection) task force will have taken coercive action against Google,” said CNIL President Isabelle Falque-Pierrotin. Last year, Google consolidated its 60 privacy policies into one and started combining data collected on individual users across its services, including YouTube, Gmail and social network Google+. It gave users no means to opt out. National data protection regulators in Europe began a joint inquiry as a result. They gave Google until February
to propose changes but it did not make any. Google had several meetings with the watchdogs and argued that combining its policies made it easier for users to understand. The CNIL’s move is seen by legal experts and policymakers as a test of Europe’s ability to influence the behavior of international Internet companies. The UK is still considering whether its law has been broken and will write to Google soon with its findings, the CNIL said.
And Google is due to answer allegations on the issue in a German court hearing late next week, a spokesman for the country’s data protection regulator said. Google said it would continue to work with the authorities in France and elsewhere: “Our privacy policy respects European law and allows us to create simpler, more effective services. We have engaged fully with the authorities involved throughout this process, and we’ll continue to do so going forward,” a spokesman said by email.

FAST - CAMPOSOL FIESTA UPDATE
F.A.S.T Camposol was asked to man a First Aid Tent over two days at the Camposol Fiesta which at first appeared to be a comparatively simple undertaking. However, this proved to be a bit of a logistical nightmare in terms of manpower given that at the same time we had to maintain our normal cover within Camposol which is to have two responders on 24 hours a day, seven days a week and the Fiesta detail could not encroach on the normal F.A.S.T response team. The call went out and as usual our fabulous team of responders who provide this unique service rose to the occasion which meant that we were able to supply the additional 21 responders required to work in three hour shifts. Made possible only by our volunteers giving up their free time to take on the extra duties in order to ensure our Fiesta was fully manned with adequate first aid cover. The F.A.S.T Committee wish to express their appreciation to all the team who stepped forward to make this possible not forgetting their family members who also assisted and gave their support. The icing on the cake for F.A.S.T was that there were no major incidents over the course of the Fiesta for the teams to deal with. FAST’s dedication to duty did not go unrewarded as the teams help to raise the profile of F.A.S.T and at the same time attracted the much needed funds to help us maintain our commitment to the residents and visitors to Camposol. Our shrapnel bucket at the tent received over €400 in donations dropped in by people passing by or stopping to say hello and wish us well. In addition, the Silly Old Sods presented us with a donation of €300 boosted even further with €100 from Sheila’s Lending Library and €250 from John de Bingo. F.A.S.T are extremely grateful for all the donations we receive as without them we would be unable to purchase the necessary equipment, oxygen, training and supplies required to help us to help you and carry on making Camposol a safer place for all. Our grateful thanks to everyone who contributes to our cause.

SONGS THAT WILL LIVE FOREVER
One of the year’s major events will take place on Saturday 29th June when the Orihuela Costa Resort Hotel at La Zenia presents two performances of the concert ‘Songs That Will Live Forever’. The concerts will be performed as ever by the ever-popular choir, MELODY MAKERS INTERNATIONAL and the talented singers of the CANTEMOS! CHILDREN’S CHOIR. Both performances are directed and conducted by Nigel Hopkins - and accompanied by a professional band, most of whom fly in from the UK for the shows. The programme will include some of the most popular tunes ever written, such as Annie’s Song, Imagine, Nun’s Chorus, The Prayer, Rhythm of Life, When I Fall In Love, One Day More, Night & Day, Unchained Melody, Get Me To The Church On Time, etc., along with many more by the Children’s Choir, and their very talented soloists. The children will repeat their recent success which included using Deaf Sign Language whilst singing one particular song. This engendered great excitement and praise from an enthusiastic audience. Tickets at 10€ (afternoon @ 2pm) and 12€ (evening @ 8pm) are NOW AVAILABLE from either the Orihuela Costa Resort Hotel Reception (Tel: 966 760 800) or CallNet Internet Cafe - in the alley behind Consum next to Paddy’s Point, La Zenia (Tel: 966 761 171). These concerts will support the Costa Blanca Samaritans as in previous years, and the mayor of Orihuela will be in attendance in the evening.

The photo shows Barbara Stott doing her modeling.

Rojales town hall supports EHCRC Foundation
Rojales Town Hall has announced it’s full support to the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre Foundation (EHCRC) saying by working together they could boost local tourism. The Mayor of Rojales, Antonio Perez García, accompanied by fellow councillors recently took up an invitation to visit the EHCRC. So impressed with the work they do, meetings have since been held between the Town Hall, the rescue centre and the three main hotels in the area to be able to offer tourism packages for the ever increasing number of people enquiring about volunteering holidays and visits to the centre. Derek Monks, councillor for Foreign Residents said the Town Hall was looking forward to a strong working relationship with the centre: “Sue and Rod have so much vision about conservation of the countryside and there is a lot of potential to attract more people and tourism. With 856 people unemployed in the municipality we are keen to look at new ways to increase tourism and jobs.” Councillor for Tourism, Marie Pierre Dubois added: “Educating younger generations about animal welfare is also very important.” Tatiana Canizares, Councillor for Education and Libraries, has translated their leaflet into Spanish and these are now available in local town halls and tourist information offices. Sue said: “We were honoured to have the Mayor and his team visit and we have a wonderful working relationship with the council and look forward to exciting projects ahead.”
The Rescue Centre is open to the public every Sunday from 1300 till 1700. There is tasty hot food, cakes and refreshments available together with their very popular horse tours. For more information on the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre, visit www. easyhorsecare.net or call Sue on 652 021 980.

HAIL! HAIL! ROCK ‘N’ ROLL
What a Rockin’ night was had at ‘El Alto La Dolores’ on Wednesday 19th June, at another fantastic Charity fund raising event organised by the ‘ADHOC THEATRE COMPANY’. The joint was really jumping, as ‘WOODY & THE PECKERS’ pumped out live Rock ‘n’ Roll music to a packed audience. Their tribute to Buddy Holly & The Crickets was enthusiastically received and applauded by all, as was their other two sets of live unadulterated rock music. Many of the audience had never seen the band before, and asked if this would be a regular event, as they left wanting more and more! What made the night even more pleasing and successful was the integration of so many nationalities. Joining the regular Brit Fan Club were Germans, Dutch, Spaniards and Scandinavians, amongst others. Everybody loves good old fashioned rock ‘n’ roll! The dance floor was overflowing throughout the night, and there were many exhausted revellers making their way home afterwards. The Restaurant Manager Cornel and his staff were equally exhausted, having provided a great table service all night. Of course, the most satisfying aspect of the night was the fact that more than 500 euros was raised for charity. ‘ADHOC’ and ‘Woody & The Peckers’ will be repeating it all again on Wednesday, 24th July at ‘El Alto La Dolores’. Tickets will be available shortly from the usual outlets and, of course, the Restaurant itself.
aecc 5km walk
This year’s 5km Walk for AECC, held at Playa Flamenca on 2nd June, raised a fabulous total of €14,000.93, a record for the event. Maria Wilson, local President of AECC and President of The Pink Ladies, main organisers of the event, said that this was the best year so far out of the four held at Playa Flamenca, by way of number of walkers and money raised. Maria also repeated her thanks for making the event such a success to all those that walked, sponsored, donated, entertained or generally lent a hand. All the money raised goes to AECC, without any deduction for expenses, for its subsidised cancer screening program and for cancer research.

Medieval Market in La Nucia 5, 6 and 7 July 2013 La Nucía returns once again to the Middle Ages to celebrate its 308th birthday; on the 9th of July in the Year of our Lord 1705 an official document was signed that established La Nucia as an independent settlement. Instead of a huge cake with far too many candles, the town has decided to hold a Medieval Market. For the ninth year running, the streets between the square in front of the Town Hall down to the old “lavadero” (where the women of the village used to wash their clothing) will be decorated with flags and bunting, and lined with stalls to create a medieval setting. La Nucia Town Hall has once more asked Amata to organise the event. Amata, the regional association interested in maintaining and improving craft standards, will make sure that what is sold on the 70 stalls is of good quality and made by the craftsman or craftswoman on the stall. Nothing from big or little factories, nothing imported - it’s
all original, which is why Amata uses the slogan “Artesanía de Autor”. The Market will not just consist of some stalls in medieval style with stallholders dressed as medieval merchants, there is also a very active programme of live medieval music, street theatre and jugglers who give a fire show at the close of the Friday evening. On Saturday and Sunday a group of knights and their ladies will set up a small “campamento” and give us an idea of military life in medieval times. The knights (and their ladies too at times!) will fight in full armour, weighing about 35 kg, and that in this heat! Late on the Saturday and Sunday evening, after it gets dark, they will give a show with fire. Besides theatre and music there will be demonstrations of old crafts such as glass blowing, book binding and wood, bone and horn carving - you can even ask the craftsman to make an individual piece while you watch. In fact, the people in this Market not only
sell original work but many of them can add an extra touch on the spot, or take orders for some special design. After all, these are craftsmen and women and you can help them keep their craft alive. After wandering around the Market, visitors can restore their tissues with a beer or roast meat at the medieval tavern, a glass of tea in the Arab tea tent or try out traditional boiled “pulpo” (octopus) served with potatoes on wooden platters. Other stalls sell cheese, pressed fig bread and sausages made to medieval recipes and there is even a baker selling bread straight from his wood-fired oven. The children can have a ride on a donkey or a medieval merry-goround, or play table games in the medieval ludoteca. The market in La Nucia will be open on Friday 5, Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 July from 6 pm and go on till midnight (or perhaps a little later). For more information ring 639 979 678 (in English) or look at http://www. amata.es/LaNucia12.html to see photographs of last year’s market.

Probiotic supplements help to boost Vitamin D levels, according to new research. According to a study by Mail Online, a study found that a taking a probiotic supplement boosted levels of the vitamin by more than 25 per cent. It is the first evidence that probiotics play a role in maintaining levels of the bone-strengthening nutrient. Previous studies have shown the effect of the particular strain of a probiotic,
called Lactobacillus reuteri NCIMB 30242, on cholesterol reduction, but its effect on the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins such as Vitamin D was unknown. R e s e a r c h e r s investigated the effects of the probiotics after a supplement had been taken by a group of adults for nine weeks. They tested levels of Vitamin D by monitoring levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D in the blood. Vitamin D levels are of
increasing concern as the numbers of children developing rickets, and the number of adults developing osteoporosis, increases. Insufficient Vitamin D contributes to these conditions by reducing calcium absorption, and by in turn weakening the bones. Researchers are also beginning to discover links between Vitamin D levels and protection against heart disease, autoimmune diseases and diabetes.

igital Hearing HEARING LOSS
Hearing loss is often a gradual process that sneaks up on you over many years. It is very common, but all too often it isn’t properly recognised or treated. When you can’t easily hear the people around you and when it is hard to take part in conversations, then it is going to be harder to live life to the full. Hearing loss is not a mystery. ‘It is easily identified and in most cases can easily be treated. Often the biggest barrier seems to be taking the first step and acknowledging that you might have a hearing problem and having your hearing checked out.
A variety of factors may reduce Vitamin D absorption, including limited exposure to sunlight, dark skin, obesity, and problems with absorption or ability to convert Vitamin D to its active form. ‘This study is adding to the body of knowledge on the microbiome (the community of bacteria in the gut) command and its role in human health,’ said Dr Jones, lead study author and chief scientific officer at probiotic company Micropharma Limited. ‘Although it has long been known that the gastrointestinal tract plays an active role in the absorption of Vitamin D, these findings showing improved Vitamin D status in response to an orally delivered probiotic are a first, and will inform the development of new products that may be beneficial for people with low Vitamin D levels.’
It is a frustrating statistic that on average people wait seven years after the onset of hearing loss before taking the first step and having a hearing test. Seven years of unnecessary grief for everyone! Hearing loss can have very negative effects on a person’s quality of life: confusion, embarrassment, frustation - often leading to social isolation, low esteem and even depression. The person who has the hearing problem has the choice of putting up with it or doing something about it. Those close to them have no choice; they are stuck with the problem. Do something about it now. There is a better life and a richer world waiting for you.

Beach fair with a difference in Jávea Port
Every year, all along the coast, you’ll see rows of little stalls with hand-made jewelry and artistic T-shirts lined up along the front. The jewellry might be made by hand, but usually not by the people selling the stuff. It will come from Third World countries and is bought from specialised importers. Nice as a holiday souvenir, but you can buy the same stuff in any pound store. And now for something a little different. This summer you will find a different sort of stalls set up in Jávea Puerto - stalls with jewelry, turned wood, scarves, carvings, leather, ceramics, even sculptures and paintings, all made by the people of the stall. Amata - the people who launched “Artesanía de Autor” have been asked to organise a real craft market, and this looks like it is going to succeed. With the blessings of the local shopkeeper’s association, who want a little bit of quality for a change. Jávea Puerto is not the Playa Arenal, Jávea Puerto is the bit of the old town near the port; there is a beach, there are restaurants, cafés, all sorts of interesting shops, a super modern concrete church of very original design and now a real craft fair. Just twenty or so stalls, but every one with people selling the stuff they make. You can buy something you admire, or, if you have a little patience and what you ask is not too complicated, order something and pick it up a few days later. Some of the craftsmen and women are locals who are just looking for somewhere to sell what they make. Others are people from Madrid or Albacete who want to escape the heat and spend a month with their family at the seaside, and who sell their work as a way of making it possible to take a holiday. Whatever the reason, this is where you can find the sort of goods you associate with real craftsmanship. The market opens every evening at 7 and the stalls pack up at about midnight on the beach front of Jávea port from 1 July to 15 September. Not everybody is there every day: some take turns so as to have time to spend in their workshop - they can’t just go to the whole saler and buy more: if they sell they have to sit down and make more!! Ring 639 979 678 for further details (English spoken) or have a look at www.amata.es which has an English section with photographs of this and similar fairs.

The Torry Army held its 11th annual General Meeting at the Casa Ventura in San Luis last Thursday evening 20th June. It’s hard to believe it’s been around for over 10 years. It has certainly had its share of ups and downs but it is still alive and kicking and is in a healthy state and keen to grow. The meeting was reasonably well attended and present was the Mayor of Torrevieja and the Councilor for Sport who are both keen to engage and give their support to clubs/associations in the Torrevieja area. The past year has been a successful one for the Torry Army and the committee was applauded for their hard work and effort over the last year. In the words of the chairman Arthur Leivers “It has truly been a team effort”. The current committee put themselves forward, “en bloc”, to serve again in 2013/14 and was elected. A motion was put forward by the committee to help the club financially by paying for the team coach to a number of away games whenever funds permit. This was supported and endorsed by the members present. The membership fee for 2013/14 was again set at just 5 euro’s. After the AGM was closed, Jeff Scott, from FC Torrevieja, gave a brief update on what is happening at the Football Club. The good news for many was that the club would return to its spiritual home, the Vicente Garcia football stadium next season. The more disappointing news was that the player budget for next year will be
quite a bit less than in 2012/13. However, the club has to live within its means and without more outside investment and greater support, it is necessary if the club is to survive. The season ticket prices and at the gate prices are likely to be the same as last year. A new team manager will be appointed shortly and then it’s down to the tricky business of assembling a squad capable of holding its own in the Tercera on the reduced budget. A hearty buffet was provided after proceedings were concluded and those present got their membership money back at a stroke. If you are an existing member of the Torry Army please renew your membership. If you aren’t a member but a supporter of FC Torrevieja or someone wishing to join a nice group of friendly people and participate in the social events organised e.g. Day Trips, fun quiz-nights, fun Bingo sessions, lunches etc then call in at the Torry Army office in San Luis between 10.00 and 12.00 on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday mornings and become a member. While you are there you may be offered a cuppa or a cool drink and you may even go away with a cool Torry Army Polo Shirt, scarf and a new style cap. Darrylldinho following his adopted team in Spain prepare for next season and its International Supporters Club - The Torry Army - close a successful year and look forward to another one.
COOKING UP SMILES The current economic crisis hits some families harder than others. With a large percentage of unemployed throughout the whole of Spain and many families without a ‘breadwinner’, some even struggle to provide a healthy, daily meal for their children! During the school term, in many cases, the school dining room is the only guarantee that the children of these families get at least, one square meal each day. However, with the long, summer school holidays coming up and the closure of the ‘comedor’, there is a risk that some children may well find themselves going hungry. This grave social problem has been recognized by the ‘Habaneras Primary school’ and the Torrevieja ‘Federation of Parents Associations’ (FAPA) who , together with the support and collaboration of the social services department of the Ayuntamiento as well as bus company, ‘Autocares La Inmaculada’, have embarked upon a voluntary initiative aimed at helping these families. Under the title “So that everyone can” (eat a daily meal), the scheme will come into effect as from the end of this month. Throughout the months of July August, around 70 children from local, needy families will be transported by bus to the ‘Habaneras’ primary school,
aiming to arrive around mid-day. A team of volunteers will provide a series of activities depending upon the age of the children including workshops in Painting, Handicrafts, audio-visual programmes, story-telling and various sporting activities. The principal activity of this programme, the provision of a daily, three course lunch, will follow making use of the school’s kitchens and dining room. Later, the children will be provided with free transport for the journey home. In order to raise the necessary funds for this project, the organizers intend to appeal to the general public. During the evening of Saturday 29th June in the very centre of Torrevieja – the pedestrianised, Calle Concepción, from around 18.30h a programme of entertainment and demonstrations of such activities as ‘Body Combat or Tae Kwando will take place alongside a collection point where food or indeed, much needed cash, can be donated. Tee shirts, promoting the campaign, can be obtained by a donation of 5€. In this manner, it is hoped to raise the almost 2,500€ necessary to provide a daily meal to around sixty local schoolchildren. Your support would be appreciated.

SOLTIMES JUNE 2013
noche de san juan SO WHAT WAS IT ALL ABOUT??? The traditional midsummer party in Spain is the celebration in honour of San Juan (St. John the Baptist). It celebrates the arrival of the summer solstice and is celebrated on the shortest night of the year in the northern hemisphere and signals the triumph of light over dark. It is a celebration that is usually held on the beach with roaring bonfires, drink, food and friends. The basic characteristics of the ritual are fire, water and the sun. According to tradition, if people jump over a bonfire three times on San Juan’s night, they will be cleansed and purified, and their problems burned away. Jumping in the sea at midnight is supposed to be a way to wash away evil spirits. After midnight people wash their faces and feet three times in order to be granted three wishes and a happy year ahead. Bathing at this time is also said to be beneficial for skin complaints. Another tradition, especially for women, requires the women of the house to prepare perfumed water combining the scents of seven plants - among them rosemary, roses and laurel - and to bathe or wash their faces in the water, again to purify themselves for the new season. As well as the bonfires that burn continuously, there are also muñecos or dolls that are burnt. This is usually done around midnight. Originally, the effigies were supposed to represent Judas Iscariot but now, the religious relevance seems to have become secondary to the enjoyment factor!

If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com
Q: I have a mortgage variable mortgage with BBVA with a minimum interest clause in my mortgage of 3.5% What do I have to do to have the minimum interest clause removed so that I can take advantage of the all time low interest rates?
A . Nothing. The BBVA bank in result of the sentence by our supreme court dated 09/05/2013 has decided to remove all clauses of minimum interest and apply the differential above the euribor with no consideration to the minimum clause. In practice this will mean that if you have have a variable mortgage of for example euribor + 1%, which is average, you will now pay aprox. 1.5% interest instead of 3.5%, which is the minimum interest clause that they introduced into your mortage document. They will remove all minimum interest clauses with effect from the 9th of May. Position of other banks since the sentence: Cajamar: The same position as BBVA. NCG Banco: The same as BBVA. Banco Popular(Banco de Andalucia):In principle they say that they will not be removing the clause. Banc Sabadell: The same as Banco Popular. Kutxabank: The same as Banco Popular. Bankinter : They are not affected as they claim they have never introduced this clause in their mortgages. Santander: The same as Bankinter. I recommend taking a look at your mortgage. If the clause is included and the bank does not remove it automatically, speak to your bank manager about it being removed.

A cool cat and his shadeswearing canine friend have been turning heads on the streets of a Chinese city.
PETS corner
When shoppers see the odd couple, they might think the fussy feline is literally taking the dog for a ride. But owner Xu Wan, from Kunming, Yunnan province, insists the pair really are the best of pedigree chums. “When I started taking the dog for a walk the cat would mew as if it didn’t want to be left at home,” he explained. “So I bought a small lead and brought the cat too. “But the cat soon got tired of all that walking and very quickly worked out that it was easier to ride.” Now the pair turn heads daily as they join Xu, 64, for his daily trip to the shops. “They love their walks and never fight,” he said.
Cool cat and canine pal turn heads Runaway Red Panda Outsmarts Zoo Officials
A red panda managed to elude zoo officials for hours after he mysteriously escaped from a zoo in Washington. The male, named Rusty, was found in a tree in an area known for its restaurants and vibrant nightlife after he went missing from the Smithsonian National Zoological Park on Monday morning. A Twitter photo and tip-off from a resident helped zoo keepers track down the savvy animal. How he escaped is still a mystery and zoo officials are surprised that he ventured so far, considering red pandas are usually highly territorial. Security footage is being examined to see if he may have been taken by a human and then set loose. Either way, it appears he was eager to explore his new city after arriving from a Nebraska zoo in
April. Senior curator Brandie Smith said: “There is no obvious point that Rusty could have gotten out of the enclosure. “We all know that young males like to test boundaries.” Unlike giant pandas, red pandas are not members of the bear family. Red pandas are slightly bigger than a domestic cat and look similar to a raccoon. They are listed as vulnerable in the wild and native to China. Scientists believe about 10,000 of the animals remain. The Smithsonian National Zoo is home to two red pandas. Red pandas reach about 42 inches in length, including their long, bushy tail, and weigh between 7lb and 14lb, according to the zoo’s website.

Re-Platemate has been established for a number of years in the Vega Repl Baja area of Alicante District and our sole purpose is to enable the ate registration of foreign plated cars brought into Spain. Our aim is to Mat provide a simple, stress-free and timely service, so that your vehicle e is fully Spain-legal. We want you to be so satisfied with the service, that you would be happy to refer us to a friend or relative. As with any business, there is always somebody cheaper. Our aim is to provide a high quality, value-for-money service at competitive rates. Whilst the majority of our clients are British, we have also successfully replated vehicles from many other EU countries including Ireland, Germany and France as the process is essentially the same irrespective of the country in which the car is presently registered. Our service is designed to successfully take your vehicle through all of the phases necessary to make you a fully legal vehicle owner in Spain. This specifically includes a matriculation engineer’s inspection and report (to satisfy the Spanish authorities that your vehicle is what it says it is on your present log book), ITV (MOT) inspection, presentation and exchange of your documents with various Spanish government departments in Alicante or Murcia, depending upon where you live. Also included in our flat- fee charge are the new number plates for your vehicle. EU legislation states that vehicles must be registered, taxed and inspected (MOT) in the same country as which the owner normally lives. If your vehicle is in Spain for more than 6 months, then you need to re-register the car in Spain and drive on Spanish licence plates. Contact: Tel: Alan 662 249 159 www.replatematecostablanca.com

In gliding flight, the greater spotted eagle holds the feathers at the tips of the wings downward. Although mainly a quiet bird, this eagle has a barking ‘kyak’ call during the breeding season. Unfortunately it is classified as Vulnerable to extinction by the IUCN. As of 2000, the world population of this eagle was estimated at less than 4,000 breeding pairs. mating. The threats faced by the greater spotted eagle are numerous and diverse. floodplain management. In Belarus, Poland, Russia, the Mediterranean and Southeast Asia, greater spotted eagle populations have suffered as a result of shooting, and across much of the range, deliberate and accidental poisoning has also caused greater spotted eagle deaths. There is also some evidence of hybridisation between the greater spotted eagle and the lesser spotted eagle (Aquila pomarina), but as yet it is not clear whether this is a natural phenomenon or a result of an increasing difficulty in finding a mate. In order to manage the decline and to protect its future is legally protected in Belarus, Estonia, France, Greece, Latvia, Poland, Romania and Russia. An International Lesser and Greater Spotted Eagle Working Group has been established and a European action plan was published in 2000. It is the Estonian adventure that we will be discovering more about, and today we are going to find out a bit more about one of the eagles which has been named Tõnn. Tõnn is a Greater Spotted Eagle from western Estonia, that was fitted with a transmitter whilst he was still in nest, on the 7th August 2008. Tõnn started his first migration in 25th of September 2008, crossed several countries and most importantly stopped for wintering in Spain, El Hondo wetlands. This area is perfect

for Spotted Eagles as “ During the migration and in winter, it visits, wetlands, and mangroves, congregating around shallow water and perching on low bushes and small trees’. Perfect! He must enjoy it there too, as he has returned to winter at El Hondo each year and there is plenty of photographic, including a photo here of Tonn, ‘flying’ ,plus obviously the satellite tracking data to confirm this. He made world Headlines with “ Tõnn spends Christmas in the El Hondo Wetlands” being featured on many internet sites. He is a well travelled bird, having visited 15 European countries by third winter and it is with bated breath that the birding world are hoping that we would find a mate, normally by the age of three to four years, but obviously due to the low number, it will be a more difficult task. He has also spent time in Torre Pacheco where unknown to me and Tõnn I would imagine, is the second oldest human habitation was discovered on the Iberian Peninsula. A short extract from his blog will give you an idea of his range, which makes for interesting reading. “So the eagle visited the Nederlands and directed by the sea - moved towards to his homeland - but Estonia was not a destination for Tõnn - he flew to Finland and spent the summer near Vaasa (western Finland). On second fall migration Tõnn stopped also in southern Estonia, during a harvesting of crops. Afterwards moved again to Spain, crossing a Switzerland. He spent his third summer Tõnn s mostly in Sweden and used migration route directly over Danish straits”. There is pictorial evidence of another two Great
Spotted Eagles at El Hondo, aside from Tõnn but these other birds do not have any tracking devices. They are thought to be the offspring of “Iti” who successfully breed in 2010 and again is thought to be related to Tõnn. There was evidence that ‘Tore’, Tõnn younger sister might also make the trip to ‘El Hondo’ having spent time in Munich and Southern Switzerland - It’s certainly nice having one’s family around for Christmas, isn’t it? Well, we certainly can’t start thinking of Christmas yet, since the summer is just beginning and if the past few days are anything to go by, it’s going to be a hot one! The weather however is perfect for our outdoor events and the next one is a fantastic evening of ‘Jazz’ so for all those wanting to listen to some ‘ cool’ music along the lines of Count Basie, Ella Efitzegerald, Frank Sinatra, The Glen Miller Orchestra, Duke Ellington, Natalie Cole, Michael Buble and many more,,,, Come on down to Casa La Pedrera on Tuesday, July 2nd at 7.30pm. It is certainly a privilege to host a concert with musicians of this calibre as the Oribi Playa Big Band - are a 22 piece jazz band, who are seasoned pro’s, many of which have performed in West End with such as the Lion King, Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, and with the BBC Philharmonic, Scottish Symphony and Concert Orchestras, both live on TV and radio, and also in the recordingstudio alongside composers such as Sir Peter Maxwell Davies and Tan Dun (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) Tickets are an affordable 6 euros and the concert is in aid of the Elche Children’s Home. Cycle Route 27 Quesada to Los Banos De Fortuna This was a great cycle trip, we left Quesada at 2pm ( 4 couples, bikes loaded with overnight kit ) on a lovely sunny Saturday afternoon and headed for Benijofar, Rojales, Daya By Gary & Ly nn Nueva, Dolores and Catral where we picked up the CV90 by Cyclogical passing El Realengo and over the bridge over the AP7, turn left Quesada at the first roundabout and follow this camino road all the way into Albatera where we stopped for a coffee and Magdelana. After our break we continued through Albatera until we came to the traffic lights where we turned right and headed up towards Hondon De Las Frailes for 5kms until we came to the canal. We turned left onto the canal and followed it for about another 5kms crossing over the first road and turning right on the second road just past La Murada .This is the CV870 which you follow all the way into Abanilla. At Abanilla you follow the signs for Banos de Fortuna and head for the campsite La Fuente. The total distance to the banos was 65kms and we arrived at 5-30pm which was a great effort. We stayed at La Fuente campsite ( www.campingfuente.com ) where there are many chalets a hotel and beautiful spa swimming pool complex . Los Banos de Fortuna is famous for it’s thermal waters. The thermal and healing baths date back to the Roman and Arab times. It’s waters arise from the earth at a temperature of 53 degrees celcius and are ideal for people with rheumatic illnesses and chronic respiratory problems and also ideal for a leisurely swim after a long ride. After a lovely long soak in the spas we had an excellent meal in the restaurant followed by a few vinos. In the morning we rose and had breakfast, checked out of our accommodation (which was great ) and headed for the town of Fortuna. We passed through Fortuna then cycled past the beautiful Embalsa de Santomera where there are many good mountain bike routes and headed for Monteagudo ( where the angel on the rock statue is ) we stopped here for a coffee and then proceeded to bypass Murcia on the RM303 passing through Alquerias then we picked up the RM301 and followed this road to Canadas de San Pedro where we turned left and followed the signs for Torremendo and Embalsa de la Pedrera. We went left round the reservoir and stopped at La Fortaleza restaurant in Vistabella where we enjoyed one of the best Paellas that we have ever had. After lunch we followed the canal all the way back to Quesada and arrived home 6pm this was a great ride and everyone enjoyed it. The total distance was 137kms....

kilometre out. El Torcal Nature Reserve attracts many visitors with the large variety of exquisite natural sights it has to offer. Andalusian mountain goats; ladder and Montpellier snakes; spine-foot lizards; Griffin vultures and other birdlife; a wealth of different flora and fauna – all only briefly sum up some of the inhabitants that are here. Three set hiking trails and a range of rock climbing routes are also another activity
enjoyed by visitors, who are motivated by the spectacular views found over Málaga valley, and even views to Morocco on clear days. A good pair of walking shoes or trainers should be worn in the reserve, and due to the extreme temperatures, El Torcal is recommended as best visited during the spring or autumn. If visiting during the summer months, bringing plenty of water and sunscreen is highly advisable.
Man tackles escaped pause for thought bull to the ground A bull on the loose was wrestled to the ground by a man after the animal charged at him in a Spanish street. The dramatic video shows the young bull ramming into a car before turning its attention to the man, who happened to be wearing red. Luckily, he avoided being gored by the bull, which had escaped from a livestock pen in Malaga, and tackled it to the ground before being helped by witnesses. Nobody was injured and the bull is believed to have been unharmed, reports The Telegraph.
Sat nav leads OAPs onto wrong ferry
Two West Yorkshire pensioners nearly missed their oceangoing ferry to Spain - when their sat nav led them onto a tiny river crossing instead. Bob and Pat Banks, both in their 70s, hoped to join 2,415 fellow passengers for a 20-hour sea trip from Plymouth to Santander. But instead of boarding the plush, ten-deck, 41,000-ton ship, they ended up on the Torpoint Ferry for a six-minute, 650-metre hop across the Tamar from Devon to Cornwall. By the time they twigged, their car was jammed in by others on the £1.50 open-deck service, reports The Sun. Mr Banks, from Leeds, said: “We were held up and got to Plymouth only 40 minutes before departure, so were relieved when our sat nav announced we’d reached our destination. “When the truth dawned we had to accept the worst. I felt very embarrassed.” Staff put them on the first trip back and a mystery driver on the service kindly guided Bob and Pat to their Brittany Ferries ship which they caught with seconds to spare. Torpoint Ferry boss Rod Sugden said: “This has happened before. Sat navs tend to lead you to us rather than the Channel ferry port.”
Last September, two friends holidaying with us got engaged at Aljambra in Granada, so we weren’t too surprised to receive an invite to their wedding, held in Lancashire on 15th June. Flights were booked early to avoid problems and we duly set off. Alicante, when checked in, however, seemed even more chaotic than usual, with destination boards glowing red with a mix of delays and cancellations, giving strength to the rumour that the French Air Traffic Controllers had decided to strike from Tuesday until Thursday; causing almost total closure of French airspace, affecting all aircraft flying over France. We, in fact were lucky, and managed to leave a mere 6 hours late, but friends heading for the same wedding, booked on a later flight, had to wait several days and only just got there in time. But in many ways we were the fortunate ones. We had homes in Spain and would merely miss a wedding if no flights were to become available. But it was heartbreaking to see young families on holiday struggling to find alternative flights home and having to pay for accommodation they really couldn’t afford, whilst airlines, understandably in many respects, explained they were not obliged to offer aid as the disruption was not of their making. How cruel that, however reasonable or otherwise their complaint may be, so small a group of people in France should be able to hold so many to ransom, and cause so much unnecessary suffering, merely to reinforce their argument! There certainly seemed little evidence that they loved their neighbours as themselves. And as they apparently so despised this second command, one can only wonder if they had any more regard for the first – to love the Lord their God with all their heart, soul, mind and strength. But before be criticise them too much, perhaps we should challenge ourselves as to whether our love is, in all reality, any more evident than theirs, whilst thanking God that He never goes on strike. Can you imagine the chaos that would cause? Further information about the Anglican Church and details of forthcoming events may be seen on the web site www. mojacarchurch.org . Said to have been formed some 150 million years ago back in the Jurassic period, El Torcal Nature Reserve lies around 30 kilometres from the city of Málaga, just outside Antequera. The limestone mountain ranges cover an area of about 17 square kilometres, made up of columns, stone slabs, and also a number of caves, including the ‘Cueva del Toro’ (Cave of the Bull), which contains a unique discovery of Neolithic artefacts. The reserve, unusually beautiful in its own right, was entirely under sea those 150 million years ago. Following vigorous movements of the earth’s crust, it created a huge crevice in the landscape along with horizontal layers, hills and mountains, reaching up to 1300 metres high. Over time, these mountainous rocks have formed artistically abstract

Harvest Your Herbs Your herb garden is looking fabulous, so how can you preserve them for use in the kitchen all year round?
Air drying herbs is not only the easiest and least expensive way to dry fresh herbs, but this slow drying process also doesn’t deplete the herbs of their oils. This process works best with herbs that don’t have high moisture content, like Bay, Dill, Marjoram, Oregano, Rosemary and Thyme. Moisture dense herbs, like Basil, Chives, Mint, Tarragon preserve better in a dehydrator, or try freezing them. Only use a microwave or oven to dry herbs as a last resort as these actually cook the herbs to a degree, diminishing the oil content and flavour.
When To Harvest...
Harvest before flowering: If you’ve been harvesting all season, your plants probably haven’t had a chance to flower. But nonhardy herbs will start to decline as the weather cools, so late summer is a good time to begin drying your herbs. Cut in mid-morning: Pick before the plants are wilting in the afternoon sun.
How To Dry Herbs...
Cut healthy branches from your herb plants; remove any dry
or diseased leaves, shake gently to remove and insects. If necessary, rinse with cool water and pat well dry with paper towels. Wet herbs will mould and rot. Remove the lower leaves along the bottom inch or so of the branch. Bundle 4 - 6 branches together and tie as a bunch. You can use string or a rubber band. The bundles will shrink as they dry and the rubber band will loosen, so check periodically they the bundle is not slipping. Make small bundles if you are trying to dry herbs with high water content. Punch or cut several holes in a paper bag. Label the bag with the name of the herb you are drying. Place the herb bundle upside down into the bag. Gather the ends of the bag around the bundle and tie closed. Make sure the herbs are not crowded inside the bag. Hand the bag upside down in a warm, airy room. Check in about two weeks to see how things are progressing. Keep checking weekly until your herbs are dry and ready to store.
Storing & Using Your Dried Herbs...
Store your dried herbs in air tight containers; zip closing bags will do or use small canning jars. Be sure to label and date your containers. Your herbs will retain more flavour is you store the leaves hole and crush them when you are ready to use them. Discard any dried herbs that show the slightest sign of mould. Place containers in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. Dried herbs are best used within a year. As your herbs loose their colour, they are also loosing their flavour. Use about 1 teaspoon crumbled dried leaves in place of a
tablespoon of fresh.

HELP FOR HOMELESS VETERANS (Regd Charity) On 6 July the 50+ SOLOs and HOGGIES BAR SAN LUIS near Torrevieja are having a BBQ and a Fund Raising afternoon to raise funds for the above Charity starting at 2.45pm. Their workload is increasing every week and their work is becoming more important as they offer help and advice to people having to leave the Services for various reasons and do not qualify for help from the Government. Many are homeless, unemployed, and need advice on Life skills. Without the work of this and similar charities many of the
exservicemen would slip through the net and disappear into a life that no one would want for their son or daughter- mental illness and perhaps drugs and alcohol. Have a function or an event to raise cash to buy food, clothing, accommodation/furniture, expenses to attend Life skills training and so much more. Visit their website Help4homelessveterans.org.uk. Local contact is 966 789 063 This is the first fund raising event for this dedicated and relatively new charity. We have supported Help for Heroes for 56years but now I feel that these people need help with some of them existing in heartbreaking situations.

more thorough going over when necessary is more my way. Such simplicity should mean that As our house rose gradually from the virgin bedrock we were able to say it is hard to lose things. However, I pretty much how we wanted it to be. have lost a sparkly necklace. This is a With the memory of years of Saturdays small object, and easy to mislay, but spent pushing a vacuum cleaner how can I now have lost my entire into obscure corners in odd shaped wardrobe of swimsuits – all 3 of rooms and up stairs we specified that them? I discovered my loss when the we wanted it to have the minimum number of rooms with the minimum sudden arrival of summer tempted me number of corners and definitely no to dip a toe carefully into the pool. My toe announced that it was safe stairs! Thus our house is small and simple –it for the rest of the body to follow it is an easy house, both in concept and without danger of hypothermia, so care; even though retirement means I went in search of a swimsuit – I felt that I could, if I wanted, spend all day that I had reached both the age and and every day cleaning, that is never the dimensions that make a swimsuit going to happen! a more appropriate choice than a A perfunctory bikini. I went straight to the swimsuit drawer, whipround with the duster, and a but it was as bare as Old Mother Hubbard’s cupboard. not only not there, but not anywhere else either. Since that day I have searched diligently in all the places both likely and unlikely, but I remain swimsuitless – I am having to swim in a bikini, and anyone who comes to call unexpectedly will be pardoned for thinking that we have invited a Beluga whale to holiday with us! However, I think I know what has happened - we have been selectively burgled! There is a legend told by the old folk of a ghost, a White Lady, who roams Limaria in an eternal but fruitless search for her lover. It is said that he was lured away into the mountains and killed by brigands on the eve of their wedding, but that his heartbroken bride seeks him still at the full moon. I reckon that she has stepped up her search, and is now doing her roaming wearing a sparkly necklace and dressed in a swimsuit!
A Good Breakfast is Half the Battle
English history fascinates me and although I could never go head to head with Tarquin EllisonChitty on University Challenge (Scargill College Barnsley, reading: Historical Novels and Lady Jane Grey’s tea leaves), I was nevertheless aware that earlier in June; we saw the 368th anniversary of the Battle of Naseby. Now I know to some this will elicit a reaction that closely resembles the sound of duhhhhwosdat? But for others who have an interest in these things or who were lucky enough to have real history lessons at school, they will know that Naseby was a battle fought between the Royalist and Parliamentarian forces on the 14th June 1645; during the first of the series of armed conflicts collectively known as the English civil war, In fact Naseby was pivotal in the outcome of the war, with the battle marking an overwhelming victory for Oliver Cromwell’s New Model Army and leading indirectly to the final demise of King CharlesI four years later The process that led to Naseby started in May, when Charles and his army prepared to attack the
Parliamentarians who were laying siege to Chester. Unfortunately for Charlie, the Roundheads were having none of it and took off before the opposing force could engage, blowing raspberries and shouting rude words at their adversaries as they went. Thoroughly miffed, Charles now turned his attention to Leicester where there was stationed only a miserable two thousand Parliamentarian soldiers. Miserable because, if anything, Leicester was even more depressing than Chester and so predictably, the city easily fell to the colourfully dressed and sweet smelling Cavaliers. Leicester 0 : Royalists 1. This was worrying for Cromwell’s lot and so, after leaving Oxford, which they had laid siege to, the Parliamentarians under General Fairfax advanced north to meet the Royalists and camped close to the Northamptonshire village of Naseby. Under normal circumstances the battle would have started at dawn, but it was a foggy morning with zero visibility. There had already been a bloody encounter with a flock of sheep and a scarecrow before both sides realized that trying to locate the enemy was pointless. Fairfax insisted therefore that his men had a full English breakfast inside them before hostilities commenced, which turned out to be an inspired move because it meant that the King’s army was forced to sit around and wait,

having had only cold tea from the previous night. They were left to drool over the smell of fried bacon wafting across the fields from the opposing army, forcing them into a sulk, before finally being called upon by their irate commander, Prince Rupert, to advance on the enemy who were now clearly visible just half a mile away. This impatience and the grumpiness within the Royalist ranks did not help their fighting prowess or morale and some feel that the beans served up at breakfast to the Roundheads was also a major influence in the Royalist retreat. History records that Charles’ army was routed and Fairfax went on to recover Leicester on the 18th of June and immediately after, marched to Somerset where he relieved Taunton and re-captured the West Country for the Parliamentarian side. Another of the many engagements fought during the conflict, was the Battle of Stow-on-the-Wold in 1646. This resulted in yet another heavy defeat for the Royalists, with 1000 killed and another 1000 taken prisoner against light casualties on the Parliamentarian side. There were so many wounded and dying soldiers laid out in Digbeth Street, it was described as flowing with blood. Stow is a hauntingly pretty little market town and I use that word advisedly, because of a very strange experience I had during a visit to the town with our
friends from California. Not the one when friend Dougie actually bought a round, but an even stranger occurrence than that. We were looking around St Edwards Church and I had wandered off to look at the tomb stones set in the floor of the main aisle, leaving the others to study the visitor’s book near the entrance. I looked up to see a tall man seemingly dressed in a black period costume looking over their shoulders at the same register. Apart from us, the church appeared to be deserted, so on hearing voices behind me; I swiveled round to see two tourists emerging from the choir area. When I looked back seconds later, the tall man had disappeared and my party was still discussing the entries in the book. I asked them if they had seen the strange man or if anyone had entered or left the church while they were there – both questions eliciting a negative response. I have never mentioned the episode again until now, but I still wonder who the strange bloke who looked suspiciously like Blackadder could have been...

A dishevelled José Cabrasilbido peered from under his bed rather like a mountain-goat squinting from the depths of some dark cave. As the village policeman it was his duty to keep the peace. However, seeing the recent riot in full swing he muttered something which sounded like “Not bloody likely” and dived for sanctuary ‘neath his bed. With the streets now quiet, José’s courage returned and he ventured out into the sunlight once more. The unrest had brought the old barrio rivalry to the fore with a vengeance. The Olive Mill had gone into administration and the staff numbers reduced by some seventy-five percent. Rodriquez, the mill owner and leader of the Newcomer’s Barrio had in a cynical sectarian act dismissed only workers from the Hill People’s Barrio. The riot and siege of the mill followed. Rodriquez had been running the Mill into the ground ever since he inherited it from his Father. His management style had two simple rules. Rule one. He is always right and rule two. If he is ever found to be wrong then refer to rule one. As a fool who thinks he is clever, he made one disastrous decision after another and blamed the resultant chaos on the innocent. Recently a replacement snudgegrundling machine arrived and provision was being made for its installation. Rodriquez, complaining about the delay simply paced out the space required. When the machinery was in place the reciprocating arm which operated the skitterywangle sprocket had no room to operate. The solution was to knock a hole in the wall of the men’s convenience. This allowed the arm to pass through. Anyone making use of the ‘loo’, in the standing position had to duck every six and a half seconds which was the operating cycle of the machinery. Normally the procedure was to ignore Rodriquez and do the opposite. When the scheme turned out to be a success, Rodriquez’s selective memory would kick in and he would claim the glory. This is perhaps the only reason the mill has lasted as long as it has. With the opposition laid off, the Olive Mill was exclusively populated with sycophants and yes men. A situation which potential buyers were well aware of. Rodriquez had already opened the taps on the olive oil storage tanks and was preparing to torch the Mill when news of a saviour arrived. The Consorcio de Causas Perdidas of Guadix had come in with an offer of finance. They were however under the impression that the Mill was a working museum. The aged machinery certainly reinforced this view. Rodriquez was ecstatic and promptly ordered a complete set of the latest Abyssinian Goat Shirling equipment out of the new funding. One wonders how long the new influx of cash will last.

“Some Things Should Still Be Personal” Or How the Major Internet Organisations have capitulated to P.R.I.S.M. What an opening statement! Blasphemous, libellous and downright suable. Only if it is untrue! What on earth could have provoked such an outburst! Have you seen the advert on T.V. That states Microsoft is only interested in your privacy and states that “some things should still be personal”. Let’s start with a recap of some of the subjects that have been discussed within the leaves of your favourite free newspaper. We have talked about personal security within your own systems, we have discussed how data is stored, deleted, recovered and completely wiped! What if this isn’t enough? For generations we have accepted that there are agencies that monitor (for our safety????) all our telephone conversation, emails, and just about every conceivable form of electronic information transfer. But where do we, the private citizen, draw the line and shout “Innocent until proven guilty in a court of law!”. Would it surprise you that there is an agreement that goes back to 2007 being run by the NSA (National Security Agency) in America, whereby any agency can get information about anyone, on any subject. This is what is going on behind the innocent acronym PRISM. PRISM is a “Special Source Operation” in the tradition of NSA’s intelligence alliances with as many as 100 trusted U.S. companies since the 1970s. Some of these names will be familiar: FaceBook; Microsoft(Hotmail, etc); Google (well known for collecting information!); YouTube and Skype (also Microsoft). Under US law there can be “specifically authorizes intelligence agencies to monitor the phone, email, and other communications of U.S. citizens for up to a week without obtaining a warrant” when one of the parties is outside the U.S. As most of the information flows through servers (Bloody Big Computers) and these are all based in the US, where are we when it come to personal freedom? Now that you know that the NSA has access to all the major players in the america it will be dawning on you that every photo pasted onto Facebook can be accessed by these ‘Agencies’, every comment in every email, every single word spoken to a loved one, half way around the world could be monitored and used against you. So the question that must be asked is “Do we actually what someone watching over our every move?” or are we “Grown-up enough to be able to make our own decisions as to what is right and what is wrong.”. I was wrong! Like everyone, I do make mistakes, and try to learn from them! I believed that whatever I said to my friends in England, Australia and the rest of Europe was covered by the privacy that 2 friends hold. I believed that pictures put on the internet to let friends know that I was well and enjoying life, were safe. I believed that anything placed on “YouTube” had been monitored which allowed me to watch only what I wanted to. So, now I am currently looking for an email provider that offers encryption, a VoIP system that allows encrypted conversations (if it is good enough for the leaders of every country – it’s good enough for me) and anything that will allow me to continue to send lawful messages with the certain knowledge that it will be between myself and whoever I want to talk to. I have absolutely no desire to cause anyone any concern. It is my earnest hope that we will be more careful about what we put in these ‘Very Public Forums’ in the light of this new knowledge. Remember, with knowledge you have choices! Stay smart and choose carefully. Enjoy the coming weeks because the days are starting to get shorter and the fiesta’s are springing up everywhere, just like summer flowers. Until next time when the subject will be less inflammatory have a lovely time For further information or advice on computing, contact Trevor on 689 892 745 or canducomputing@hotmail.co.uk
I have lived in Spain for almost seven years and in that time I’ve kept abreast of news from back home. Partly as I’m interested in current affairs and have this column to write, but also as wise words shared with me when I first arrived still ring true. Better to be working hard in the sun than to be working hard under the all too often grey skies back in Blighty. A recent meteorologist’s conference was hastily convened to discuss Britain’s recent topsy turvy weather. It was announced that Britain may be due a dry sunny summer sometime around 2017! 2012’s summer was the second wettest ever recorded, caused by a warmer than usual Atlantic. The Gulf Stream in turn now passes south of the UK bringing wetter weather. Spain and the rest of

No Turning Back by Susan Lewis
“So many secrets, lies and burdens of shame. The truth was like the tide: no matter how far it might ebb, it would always make a return.” One of those easy reads but infuriatingly incredible to believe. Lies, deception and hypocrisy emerge to shatter the cosy existence of Eva, a famous ex-model living in the lap of luxury having shunned the limelight. The reason? The book begins by disclosing details about a vicious knife attack by a psychopathic maniac who had been stalking the beautiful Eva during the height of her fame. The attack was barbaric and life-threatening more so because Eva was pregnant at the time. She was fighting for her life but miraculously survived to give birth to a son. She was left badly disfigured. “There were so many of them, cruel jagged gashes torn into the flawless fabric of her skin, grinning, like silent, gruesome mouths.” Eva’s cold-hearted and selfish rejection of her son, unable and unwilling to love and cherish him resulted in his immediate adoption and once Eva recovered it was something she lived to regret. Nick, the father of the child rejected Eva immediately after the attack and Eva’s vengeance in punishing such a callous act was in turn to abandon his son-her own flesh and blood. This chick-flick romance begins in an interestingly dramatic way then plunges into mediocrity and ends on a cringingly predictable happy-everafter note. As a beach-read it is more than adequate but too contrived and spoiled by this predictability. To an outsider, Eva’s world seems perfect then crash, bang, wallop reality sinks in to a topsy-turvy hell before divine intervention falls on them like manna from heaven. Forgiveness, cloaked as a religious almost divine analogy absolves the betrayal of trust and loyalty. Just like that. It ends on a hopeful note typifying Susan Lewis’ craft as a writer of romance. Forgiveness transcends sin. “Where are They Now?” Who would have thought that an article written 16 years later would have reminded Eva of a painful time in the past that she had hoped had been buried, that sometimes the past invades the present and can impinge on the future? The story moves on 16 years where life is looking good for Eva although she is secretly pining for the son she gave away. She married
her “rock” who turns out to be the biggest hypocrite in the story alongside sister Patty. Eva has been naïve, what an understatement! When she has a pitiful showdown with Don she cannot accept his infidelities: “Don would never cheat on her, or lie, or do anything to hurt her, he wouldn’t lie, he never lied!” Even Jasmine, Don’s daughter had warned Eva: “You know what they say about men who dump their wives, if they’ve done it once they’ll do it again.” Her own mother had been dumped by Don so she knew what she was talking about! The truth can sometimes hurt and in Eva’s case it almost destroys her. She had been betrayed by her husband and Patty, her sister. Shocked. Incensed. Foolish. Torn apart and filled with vengeance. A myriad of powerful emotions to contend with. Her life seemed to be inexorably falling apart. The fashion industry and the world of glamour and its expensive trimmings seem superficial. The adult world is characterised by insecurity, confusion and paranoia. Patty is downright irritating, wearing her heart on her sleeve, carrying the guilt of the world on her shoulders in a saintly fashion when she is relishing the love and physical contact of her sister’s husband. Don just seems to enjoy changing partners, like a ping-pong ball that bounces from one court to another. He deserves to be rejected. Two wives down. Next? Not to be trusted anywhere near a pretty female. The worst type of male surely? So, whilst the major part of the novel focuses on Eva’s betrayal and deception, the other development concerns her search for her long lost son with the possibility of a reconciliation from the love-rat, Nick. I suppose anything is possible. But there is a happy-ever-after if you believe in those sorts of things…Enough said. Publisher: Random House. ISBN: 978-0-099-55072-3

continental Europe are apparently due their coldest summer since 1816. I will however take my chances and hang around. Incidentally September and October may be hotter than usual so a fair trade off. Still in Britain Chancellor Osborne threatened ministers with detention if they couldn’t slash £11.5bn of their budgets for the year after next. Don’t worry if hospital waiting lists grow and schools decay as a new railway line called HS2 will be built instead. Incidentally nobody wants this south of Watford except the construction companies as it will destroy swathes of beautiful countryside simply to reduce the travelling time to that Enjoy Stephens musings? Pop over to http://findmeahomeinspain.wordpress.com as the articles early morning meeting in are posted on there too...and they’re a bit longer too! Findmeahome are always looking for quality homes for their sales and rental portfolios, please contact Stephen for a valuation: stephen@ Birmingham. This apparently findmeahome.es Telephone: 636 266 641 will boost British productivity,
as instead of grabbing 20 minutes extra in bed; people will do 20 mins extra work. Foreign railway operators are rubbing their hands with glee in anticipation of further expansion as Britain, wrongly decided long ago to privatise its railways. 2/3s are now owned by State owned companies; from France, Germany and Belgium amongst others. British rail travellers pay the highest fairs in Europe with most of the profit going abroad rather than being reinvested in Britain’s railways. Remember McLibel? In the 1980s a tiny environmental group called London Greenpeace produced and distributed 500 copies of a pamphlet criticising that bastion of healthy eating McDonalds. Instead of ignoring the leaflet the corporation threw the full weight of Britain’s libel laws at two of its authors. Now there’s an explosive revelation that there was another co-author; an undercover policeman going by the name of ‘Bob’ Robinson. McDonalds may want to ask him or the Metropolitan Police to return the £10 million they spent in legal fees. The undercover cop was aiming to infiltrate the Animal Liberation Front or ALF. To help his cover or libido, ‘Bob’ had relationships with unsuspecting women. One of whom bore a child with this lowlife whilst his real wife and children, whom he returned to at weekends, remained blissfully unaware. There are 12 women now suing the police after similar allegations have come to light. There is also an investigation into the allegation that ‘Bob’ planted a fire bomb in Debenhams whilst on a mission with the ALF in which £340,000 of damage was caused. If true, surely this is incitement, as three other men were convicted of the crime. All actions by a shadowy police unit called Special Demonstration Squad. Officers stole the identities of dead children to use as their aliases. Damningly whilst the Met Police were outwardly helping the Lawrence family after their son Stephen was murdered 1993 they were also trying to smear them. Organisations investigating police corruption and deaths of black youths whilst in police custody were also infiltrated. Never trust a policeman!

was a very enjoyable breakfast. An Individual Stableford was our format for today and Members & Guests were also playing for the honour of being the 2013 winner of the Franc Louise Cup, which is kindly sponsored by the Franc Louise Bar in Sucina. An excellent turnout of 40 players for a fantastic day´s golf. This course is always popular with our Members and it was lovely to see so many there today and our guests. The course was in excellent condition. Whilst windy conditions prevailed, this seem to catch some of the players out but not our worthy winner of the Franc Louise Cup who came in with 41 points. Well done Frank! I think I can see our Handicap Secretary ready with the scissors to make a hefty cut!!! In addition Frank also won a golf shirt which was given to the Society by Las Colinas for the overall Winner. Presentation of the Division & NTP prizes was held afterwards on the terrace at Las Colinas. Our Division winners on the day were:Division One: 1st John Storey - 37pts, 2nd Alan Lowe - 36pts

Training starts back up at the end of August, more information about this will be put in the papers nearer the time. SMGS - VISIT MAR MENOR
This week’s meeting saw members and guests of the San Miguel Golf Society travelling south down the AP7 to just outside Torre Pacheco where the longest established Polaris course is situated. Originally constructed as only a nine hole course, Mar Menor became the flagship for the other developments in the Murcia area which now sees all six courses rolled together and marketed as the “Murcia Golf Experience”. Jack Nicklaus designed the second nine about five years ago to make Dave Thomas’s original nine hole layout into the 18 found there today. The three holes in the middle of the back nine surround a large lake and are becoming known as the course’s very own “Amen Corner”, where many a good round has come to a watery end. The all round condition was excellent with greens now fully recovered from their hollow-tining which was carried out last month. Good run on the fairways and well kept bunkers (hundreds of them!!) certainly helped to contribute to the good scoring conditions. The four NTP’s went to Alan MacDonald, Ivan Hanak, Graham Cockayne and Shay Cunningham with the top 2 visitor prizes going to Alan Maidment (34) and Peter Hames (28). The top four members in the one division for the day were Noel Bannon in 4th spot with 36 points, 3rd place went to Herbie Smyton (37 C/B) and Derek Johnston’s superb scoring on the back nine earned him 2nd place on count-back (37). But no-one could match the top score of the day; a 39 from Graham Cockayne which saw him take 1st prize. Scores from top to bottom were pretty closely bunched, all virtually within a range of some 10 points, so Mick Roscoe’s “Abacus win” could very easily have gone to any one of quite a number of players.
