The arrival of the ex Manager of the Club Voleibol Murcia 2005, Juan Cuenca, and the two Romanians Constantin Stan and Valentín Ion at the Juzgado de Instrucción número 5 de Molina was accompanied by boos and shouts of ‘asesinos’ ‘así os pudráis en la cárcel’ ‘mira la cara que tenéis de asesinos’ (assasins, may you rot in jail, look at the face of the assasins). The three are accused of the murder of Ingrid Visser and Lodewjik Severein, a crime known as ‘crimen de los holandeses’. At their last appearance before the court, the three refused to testify, saying that they were waiting for the judge to lift a gagging order. This is their third court appearance since their arrest; the first was before a judge in Valencia, where they were arrested. Subsequently they appeared before a judge in Murcia, and it was on this occasion that they refused to testify. This third appearance in the court in Molina is due to the crime having been committed in a casa rural in El Fenazar, a Molinense district. In a previous statement Juan Cuenca claimed to have no involvement in the crime, citing Evedasto Lifante, ex owner of the Volleyball Club, who arranged the deadly ambush of the victims, and who brought the two Romanians from Valencia to Murcia in his car. On the advice of his defence counsels, José María Caballero Salinas and Pablo Ruiz Palacios Cuenca invoked his right not to testify until the lifting of the gag order. Antonio Francisco Illán, defence counsel for the Romanians, has offered the same advice.
It is claimed that Ingrid Visser and Lodewjik Severein were lured under pretence of attending a business meeting to the house in El Fenazar, where they were brutally murdered and their bodies disposed of in the vegetable garden of the house. It is conjectured that they were murdered over drugs dealings that had gone sour.
Lorca
The new water distribution infrastructure from Aguilas to Lorca and Puerto Lumbreras will require an investment of 16.8 million euros and will include the construction of 16 kilometres of new pipelines. The Secretario de Estado de Medio Ambiente, Federico Ramos, has signed a collaboration agreement with the irrigation communities of Lorca and Puerto Lumbreras to develop the project, to be 80% financed by European funds. The work, said Ramos, will improve and complete the infrastructure for the distribution of water from the desalination plant in Águilas, which was put into operation last February. The Sociedad Estatal Aguas de las Cuencas Mediterráneas (Acuamed) will be responsible for executing the work which will ‘not only expand, but to streamline the distribution of desalinated water produced at the plant,’ said Secretario de Estado Ramos. The new pipelines will take the total flows assigned to both irrigation communities from the Balsa del Cerro Colorao to the núcleo del riego consolidado de la Comunidad de Regantes de Lorca (Irrigation Centre of Lorca) and the irrigated areas of Puerto Lumbreras.

Forewarned is forearmed... The Jefa Provincial de Tráfico, Virginia Jérez, has given notice that the Guardia Civil will be taking special measures against speeding and drink driving, the two factors which are most often recurrent factors in accidents. The campaign will involve about 500 officers during peak traffic hours. There will be three major pushes: From 15 pm on July 31 to midnight on August 1; from 15 pm on 14 August until midnight on Sunday August 18, and from 15 pm on Friday, August 30th until midnight Sunday 1st September. The Delegado del Gobierno, Joaquín Bascuñana, stressed the need to respect the speed limit and urged drivers ‘do not consume even a drop of alcohol if you are driving. The campaign will focus especially on the level of alcohol and speed, as these are statistically proven to be the main causes of accidents.’ He added that the peak time and place for fatal accidents was on short trips and second-level roads. Virginia Jérez highlighted the launch of the new application for mobile devices, which gives information on traffic levels and flow, road sections that are affected by works, the status of road exits, the placing of fixed speed cameras and weather information. This is in addition to offering a

personalised service and information updates to be used to raise awareness of road safety through audible messages that will not cause distraction to the driver. The application is free to download for smartphones running Android and Apple iOS. As in previous years, the hot spots that the scheme will concentrate on are: the outward and return journey on the A-7 through of Murcia, as well as its link with the A-30 in Espinardo and access to Centros Comerciales Thader, Nueva Condomina and El Tiro. On the A-30, the trouble spots are: the municipality of Murcia, access to the City Centre, the link with the A7 at Espinardo, and junction with the RM-19 to San Javier and the Mar Menor areas. On the AP-7 Cartagena-Vera motorway: access to San Pedro del Pinatar; access to Cartagena; the link with the RM-12 at Cabo de Palos and La Manga.

Almost eighty people demonstrated in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento de Alicante, demanding the release of Fernando Muñoz. Fernando, aged 22, is accused of robbery, and has been detained in prison for almost 2 years. As well as the demonstration, a petition has been opened, and signatures have been collected on

the Alicante streets for weeks. A web page has been opened at ‘change. org’. The petition has already collected nearly 10,000 signatures, but the most striking is the amount of support via on-line, topping 45,000, is still rising, and includes the signature of one of his ‘victims’. The father of this young man said ‘we can not stop fighting. We have three goals: get the tercer grado carcelario (third degree prison), reopen the case and prove his innocence. If the first request for tercer grado carcelario is not met then both father, who is also named Fernando, and son will go on hunger strike. The case is at best very confused, with conflicting evidence from witnesses. He was sentenced for taking part in various assaults and thefts from 7 vehicles between 20 and 21 February 2010, though several of those involved have said that Fernando was not with them when the crime occurred, and others have failed to recognise him as one of the assailants. On the previous day, February 19, he called to report the disappearance of his mobile phone, and a record of the call exists with the company Orange. His lawyer, Santiago Talavera, the fourth lawyer to represent the young man, says that this makes it is necessary to review the case.

NO HIDING PLACE Mayor of Pilar de la Horadada, Jose’ Fidel Ros Samper, tells me that following the Generalitat Regional Officers, working alongside the Police Local in Pilar de la Haoradada, under the umbrella of S.A.R. (Group of Security in Rural Areas) based in the new police station in Elche, crime in the campo around the municipality of Pilar, has fallen dramatically. In May, the team stopped a vehicle, acting suspiciously, and found some 40 kilos of Nectorines on board, of which the driver could
not prove ownership. The seized Nectorines were later given to a local charity. In June, members of the team, following a tip off, discovered a number of fuel containers, hidden in long grass, in a remote corner of a field. Fuel which had be drained from agricultural vehicles and farm storage tanks. The S.A.R. team, adds to that of the Guardia Civil. Mind how you go.
Lions at Bay in Lo Marabu The Torrevieja Costa Lions Club were invited at attend the launch of Bay Radio at Restaurante Lo Marabu in Dona Pepa. The Lions fund raising activities in association with Bay Radio included a prize draw, an auction, face painting, putting competition and stand up bingo. The crowd were thoroughly entertained throughout the afternoon by presenters Nick Price and Lee Fox, playing music to suit all tastes and age groups. The Lo Marabu Chef Steve was kept busy all afternoon with his excellent barbecue on the terrace and Gino in his newly opened Cocktail bar on the terrace, made sure that nobody went thirsty , with his delicious cocktails. The Lions gallon bottle of Vodka was won by James,Beth and Natalie whose grand parents Jack and Joyce are regular customers in Lo Marabu. Jack and Joyce immediately suggested that the bottle be auctioned which was very kind of them. The ensuing auction was well supported and Hazel Vincent of Vincent Real Estate was the successful bidder with
a bid of 110.00 euros.
Many other great prizes were put to auction and in all a sum of 916.00 euros was raised on the day, with the promise of more to come. Torrevieja Costa Lions are currently raising funds in aid of ALPE, the school for disabled children and young adults in Torrevieja. The Lions will make a presentation to the school in September when the school reopens after the summer holidays. Suicide note found in Costa del Sol villa of expat family found shot dead
A triple shooting of a British and Irish family at their home in Mijas, Málaga may have been a suicide pact as a result of the care burden the couple suffered. According to a report by ThinkSpain, Philip Wood, 56, who was born in Kenya but has a British passport, was found dead with gunshot wounds in the lounge and his wife Sheila, 54 and daughter Sophie, 28 were lying on a bed covered in blanket. Toxicology testing on the women’s organs is attempting to ascertain whether they were sedated before being shot in the head. A note found in the villa on the Torrenueva urbanisation, which the family had been renting, which read: “We have had a life of suffering and cannot take any more, and I am sorry for what I am about to do.” It is thought this was related to the family’s struggle to cope with their care duties and Mrs Wood is said to have been interviewed on a local radio station describing the ‘isolation’ and problems associated with caring for a disabled child in Spain, and their fears for their daughter’s future when they became elderly or died. Sheila Wood suffered a terminal illness causing kidney failure which meant she was disabled. Although initially it was thought Sophie had Down’s Syndrome, this has been refuted, but she is believed to have been suffering from cerebral palsy and severe learning difficulties, unable to perform many basic daily living activities without assistance, and with a mental age of 10. Debt problems seemed to beset the family, say fellow expatriates. Mr Wood worked in the banking and estate agency sector and used to drive a BMW, say neighbours, and his wife had a brand-new Mini Cooper, but recently have only been driving a ‘hired Opel’ and in the last few weeks not been seen with a vehicle at all. They have lived in the Mijas area for around five years but on the Costa del Sol for at least 15 years, and it is not
known whether they owned a house before renting the luxury villa. Other residents say for many years the family led ‘the high life’, going to the most élite restaurants in Marbella and were heavily involved in the expatriate social scene until around 18 months ago. Since then, they are said to have lived an isolated lifestyle with the blinds always down on their windows and did not mix with anyone, rarely seen out. Sheila was never seen out – only Philip and Sophie – and neighbours and friends say the father and daughter ‘absolutely adored each other’. According to sources close to the case, they were two months behind on their rent and had been forced to sell their cars to survive after Mr Wood was made redundant. They were in fact found when their British landlord went to their house to demand the unpaid rent from them. Debt collectors had been to the villa in the weeks before the family’s death, and a friend said a desperate-sounding Mr Woods had asked him to cash a cheque for 26 euros for him. But the contents of the suicide note, written in Philip Wood’s hand, suggest the issue was more related to the women’s disabilities than to money trouble. Neighbours questioned by various media said they last saw Mr Wood ‘walking up a hill carrying heavy shopping bags’ and that he frequently asked for help in stopping another resident’s dog from barking, saying this was ‘upsetting his wife’, who had ‘become ill in recent months’. Witnesses said they heard three shots earlier this week, but assumed it was local hunters killing wild boar. The Guardia Civil is not going to carry out any further investigations into the cause and motives, although further forensic examinations of the bodies are due to take place. Authorities in the UK are attempting to contact relatives of the deceased couple and their daughter.

Zapatero wins ‘equality award’ German reporters claim Spanish siesta is history ‘due to Troika pressure’ for legalising same-sex marriage
Former president of Spain José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero has won an award for his work in ensuring equal rights for homosexual people by pushing through the law that has allowed samesex couples to marry since 2005. The ex-socialist leader (pictured), who retired from politics after losing the last elections, picked up the Carmen Cerdeira Award and gave a speech in which he called for equality for everyone and added, “Nothing is more important than freedom; nothing is more hurtful than discrimination and there is no labour more important than the fight against domination.” Zapatero recalled that Spain’s having become ‘a primary example of tolerance, respect and equality’, which ‘does not gain in value on the stockmarket but certainly does in society’, meant it paved the way for

other countries in the West to do likewise and allow marriages between same-sex couples to be recognised at law on an identical footing with those of mixed-sex couples, without any ‘special titles’ such as ‘civil union’ or ‘legal partnership’. France now allows fullyfledged weddings between two men and two women, whereas before, although they could form a socalled pacs, or legal union – as could heterosexual couples – these were not recognised at law in the same way as a marriage. The UK is now in the final throes of legalising these unions, having had, for the last few years, a similar system to the French pacs, known as a ‘civil partnership’ – but this was only available to gay couples rather than malefemale relationships. In a report by ThinkSpain, the tripartite entity, made up of the European Central Bank (BCE), International Monetary Fund (FMI) and the European Commission (EC) is said to be responsible for Spain largely turning its back on this age-old tradition, although the broadsheet also refers to former socialist president, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, having stopped the siesta for public sector workers in 2005 to increase productivity. The German reporters say there is now no need to down tools between midday and early evening because ‘air-conditioning means employees can still work, despite the heat’. They say the post-lunch 20-minute kip, and workers going home for several hours in the middle of the day before returning to work later, is now a thing of the past in a bid to increase consumer spending, business profits and tax revenue. The Der Spiegel article quotes people from history – including Benjamin Franklin and Cotton Mather - as saying ‘time is money’ and stating that the long lunch hour and siesta reduced

But even in large cities and heavilyfrequented tourist areas, the siesta is alive and well, with most businesses closing from around 13.00hrs to 17.30hrs and all day on Sundays and public holidays, and many not re-opening again on Saturday afternoons. Opening hours are even further reduced in July and August in most of the country. The online article has brought forth a flood of protests from Spanish people who work typically northernEuropean office hours and extra jobs in addition, calling for the author, Max Höfer, to ‘get his facts right’.

600 eager music lovers filled to capacity the exotic venue of the Orihuela Costa Resort at La Zenia on Saturday night for the second performance of the day given by two of the Costa’s leading choral entertainment groups, Melody Makers International and the talented youngsters of Cantemos! Children’s Choir. The concert started with the rousing ‘Rhythm of Life’ from Sweet Charity and followed immediately by the quodlibet ‘I Believe’ where the men of the choir sang I Believe whilst the impressive ladies chorus sang the Bach/Gounod Ave Maria - at the same time! This tour de force of choral singing laid the ground plan for the entertainment which was to follow. The eight nationalities of Cantemos! Children’s Choir sang the favourites Streets of London and Skye Boat Song to enthusiastic applause by the audience. More evergreens followed, including Imagine, Night and Day, and One Moment In Time in which the two choirs combined to outstanding effect. Special mention must be made of the performance of Nun’s Chorus sung by the ladies of the chorus and the superb solo voice of the Costa’s leading soprano, Mary Beer. The audience appreciation of this piece was rapturous and vocal. As a finale to the first half of the programme we were treated to a bubbly, happy performance of Get me To The Church On Time by what conductor and presenter Nigel Hopkins described as ‘our Welsh cockney’, Derrick Davies and Melody Makers International. Cantemos! Children’s Choir joined the whole company on the stage for an encore which sent the audience into the interval with huge (but warm) smiles on their faces. The second half opened with Jeff Hyde and chorus singing Annie’s Song. We were then treated to an absolutely delightful
rendition of the Eva Cassidy version of Over The Rainbow sung by the 18 year old Janelle Gaskell. The audience were wild with excitement and appreciation of this exceptional performance. In fact all the three young soloists, Elise MacGregor (Winner Takes It All), Holly Neeson (Danny Boy), and Janelle Gaskell showed that music on the Costa is in safe hands with their outstanding performances. There were several other memorable moments in the second half. Firstly, the Children’s Choir performed a very emotional song, Can You Hear Me?, in which they actually signed the words of the chorus in British Deaf Sign Language in total synchronisation. There was hardly a dry eye in the house! Then Nigel Hopkins himself made a rare stage appearance in a duet with French singer, Christine Lombardy, singing I Remember It Well from Gigi. This, along with the excellent Eric Berg who sang Swinging On A Star with the children, drew some of the largest applause of the night. Melody Makers versions of When I Fall In Love, Unforgettable, One Day More (Les Miserables), and the enigmatic The Prayer filled the programme with the beautiful choral sounds which are expected from this well-trained chorus who sing the entire programme from memory! The grand finale was a version of Unchained Melody which rose to rousing finish when Cantemos! joined in, and 600 people went home not only flushed with happiness, but from the heat which built up in this magnificent venue throughout the evening. The Costa Blanca Samaritans benefitted by some 600€ from this concert.

Prior to their final rehearsal before a well earned break for Summer, Cantabile Singers held an open day for prospective new recruits to the choir. Two visitor, who definitely did not wish to join the choir were Graham Knight, director of the foreign residents office and Rosario Martinez, Councillor for Citizenship, who were pictured with M.D. Jennifer Morton and Phyl Webb. Cantabile are a friendly group who, as well as performing in aid of local charities, also enjoy an active social life together. Start of summer Cigarette and alcohol tax goes up holidays sees gridlocks across Spain
Traffic jams across the country last weekend were reported as travellers from big cities and inland locations flock to the coast for the start of their summer holidays. The worst of the rush was likely to be over by Monday night, by which time at least 5.2 million cars would have been out on the road. Over the next two months, 80 million journeys – nearly two for every inhabitant – will have been made across Spain. Police have stepped up vigilance and are reporting round the clock on gridlocks on major trunk roads. In Madrid, the A-6, A-5, A-1 and A-4 have been rammed solid since Friday night and slow-moving traffic was reported on the AP-7 and A-2 near Barcelona, as well as on the minor roads B-10, B-20 and B-30. Sevilla is experiencing frequent gridlocks on the N-6, whilst on the east coast, the V-31 at the entrance to the city of Valencia, and the N-340 on the way into Alicante city have seen long tailbacks. Roadworks on the A-3 at the Valencia end may also cause long delays, and drivers are encouraged to find alternative routes where possible. So far this weekend, one death on the roads has been reported – a 56-year-old man in Almassora (Castellón province) involved in a three-car pile-up.
Taxes went up on cigarettes and alcohol from Friday as part of the government’s ongoing fiscal reform which will be completed by March next year. Minister for Finance Cristóbal Montoro says these tax rises were already anticipated at the end of April and that there would be ‘no surprises’. He added that the tax increases would be on consumer goods which had an ‘outward negative effect on society’ and, although he did not specifically mention drink and tobacco products, when questioned pointedly on these, admitted that the rises would be ‘in that area’. They are said to be in region of 10 per cent. Montoro stressed that he would not touch taxes on any type of fuel ‘because their prices are already too high’,
nor anything that could affect the hotel and catering sector, given that this is important to tourism, one of Spain’s largest sources of tax income and jobs. Annual company tax will also be affected, with deductions for large companies removed. Those with an annual turnover of 20 million euros or more will not be able to benefit from a capped percentage rate on their tax, in keeping with most of the rest of the EU. Montoro announced on April 26 that he would be ‘reviewing’ certain ‘special’ taxes, without stating which, but stipulating that these would not include petrol, diesel or anything related to restaurants, bars, cafés or hotels.
Baby found in drain ‘out of danger’ and discharged from intensive care
A baby rescued from the drains in an Alicante apartment block in the early hours of Sunday morning has come out of intensive care and moved onto a neonatal ward. According to press reports, staff at Alicante General Hospital say the infant, who was only around 40 hours old when he was found, is still in a serious condition but is out of danger. He was discovered inside a manhole after a lady living in the block called the fire brigade, thinking she could hear a kitten trapped in the pipes. The ‘kitten’ turned out to be a

Snow In Summer
The Rojales Pantomime Group have chosen their Snow White (India Martin aged 19) Our Snow White hails from Rojales and was selected when the Rojales Panto Group held their open auditions on friday 14th June. All the main roles have now been cast and the group would like to thank everyone who came along and auditioned for a part. Thanks also to the judges who took time out from their busy schedules. The group would like to hear from anybody who is interested in joining the chorus, especially male chorus members. Snow Whiite will be performed at the Escuela de Musica in Los Montesinos in early January,dates TBC. This traditional pantomime has been written by Barry Cox and will be directed by Barry with Christine Smith who directed last years very successful production Dick Whittington.
The Panto Group have now been going for a number of years and have gained themselves a loyal following and reputation for producing and performing Panto,this year will be no exception. Barry said “ I have written Snow White so that our audience can have as much fun as possible whilst enjoying this traditional unique form of entertainment.” Christine
Smith told us “ Snow White will be our most ambitious production to date.During our read through the whole cast could hardly keep a straight face and we hope the audience find it as funny as we do. It really is Pantomime at its best.” The group are also seeking anybody who would lke to help behind the scenes. Roajales Pantomime group start rehearsals on Tuesday 3rd September at 2pm. They meet every Tuesday and Friday again from 2 till 5pm in the cultural centre at Quesada and would like to express their sincere thanks to Rojales Town Hall for allowing them the use of this venue. As British expatriates in Spain prepare for their annual influx of summer visitors, the British Embassy is urging people who are expecting friends and family to remind them to bring an often-forgotten essential – a European Health Insurance Card. “If you’re having family or friends to stay this summer, they’ll be asking you what they need to bring. Item number one on their checklist should be the European Health Insurance Card - also known as an EHIC” says a British Embassy spokesman. “This simple piece of plastic entitles the holder to all medically-necessary treatment during a temporary stay in Spain. It’s easy to get – check out www. ehic.org.uk - and it costs nothing. “Although most people’s trips are trouble-free, things can go wrong. An EHIC will provide peace of mind in case someone needs to see the doctor. It’ll help to ensure they don’t take home a big hospital bill should they need medical care.” Comprehensive travel insurance is the second vital item on a visitor’s packing list. It covers all the extras that an EHIC doesn’t provide, such as repatriation in the case of medical emergency. If a visiting friend or family member is taken into hospital, an EHIC is enough to cover someone until they are well enough to travel home. If someone who is taking out travel insurance has a pre-existing medical condition, then do remind them to declare it. If they don’t, the insurer may well invalidate their policy. “You won’t fool them but they may make a fool of you”, says an Embassy spokesman. Every year consular staff in Spain are asked to assist hundreds of Britons who have failed to take out travel insurance or who have invalidated their policies, and who have ended up facing huge bills when attending a private clinic or hospital. However, visitors to Spain should be aware that they do not have to provide travel insurance as payment for medically necessary treatment in a public or state healthcare facility. They should insist that their EHIC is accepted. Anyone asked to sign a form or disclaimer in a state hospital should check that they are not forfeiting the right to be treated under an EHIC.

A cash-strapped football club is offering one fan the chance to play for the first team - if they’re willing to pay £20,000. Conference Premier side Macclesfield Town says the successful applicant will play 10 minutes of a league or cup game. The club says that only fit males between the ages of 18 and 35 will be considered. “It’s common knowledge that the club is in a precarious position and the club are looking at all avenues to keep the club running,” said associate director Andy Scott. “As far as we know this has never been done before so it is a unique moment in English football. If we are 3-0 up with 10 minutes to go that would be a good opportunity for (manager John Askey) to utilise the situation. There’s absolutely no way we would do it unless it was the right moment in the right game.” The club, known as the Silkmen, ended last season
£500,000 in debt. It needs to raise £100,000 by the end of August to stay afloat. It is unclear how a winner will be selected if more than one person offers the cash. Askey said: “What we don’t want is for it to become farcical, but I don’t think it will hinder or restrict the team, far from it. We wouldn’t be doing it if there was any danger of that.” Jon Smart, chairman of the Silkmen’s Supporters Trust, said: “Personally I can’t see anything wrong with it. If someone is prepared to pay that, good luck to them.” The team was relegated from the Football League in 2012 after 15 years. Their league is one below League Two. Last season the club reached the fourth round of the FA Cup, but lost 1-0 to Premier League side Wigan Athletic. The Football Conference has not yet commented on the plan.

A . You are going to like the answers. Inheritance tax: If you deceased, your wife would pay NO INHERITANCE TAX, as she would be entitled as resident of Andalucía to 175000 euro tax free, which is more than the value of the estate she would receive. Please note that the 175000 euro exemption in Andalucía, is an all or nothing exemption. If you are one cent over, you pay on all but the first 16000 euro. Each autonomous region of Spain has it´s own exemption rates, and the legislation applicable (and therefore the levels of exemption) will be the one of the autonomous region of Spain where the heir has been a resident for the larger part of the five years previous to the death. Believe it or not very often tax planning involves moving from one area of Spain to another. Incredible but true...A wife resident in Almería inheriting a net estate of 813000 euro from her husband would pay just under 200000 euro in Andalucia while if the same wife had been living in Madrid she would have paid 0 inheritance tax). Could the lady have avoided the tax. Yes, but the tax planning would have required the family moved to Madrid. Capital gains tax: you will pay NO CAPITAL GAINS TAX because if you are over 65 years of age and are selling your main home (you can not claim this if you are a non resident), the sale is exempt of capital gains tax.

Spanish Civil War
17th July 2013 marks the 77th anniversary of the Spanish Civil War
Anyone who has delved into this part of Spanish history will know that it is extremely complex - we won’t be covering all of the aspects of the war here in this article! Nonetheless, in a longer historical perspective, the Spanish Civil War amounts to the opening battle of World War II; it also proved to be an ideological battleground for all Europe, and it’s historical importance, therefore, cannot be underestimated.
The advent of the mass media also allowed an unprecedented level of attention - Ernest Hemingway, George Orwell and Robert Capa all covered it - and so the war became notable for the passion and political division it inspired, and for atrocities committed on both sides of the conflict.
Facts & Figures
• T he Civil War devastated Spain from 17th July 1936 to 1st April1939, ending with the victory of the rebels and the founding of a dictatorship led by the Nationalist, General Francisco Franco. • The war started after an attempted coup d’état committed by parts of the army against the government of the Second Spanish Republic. • The forces on the right were lead by Generals Franco and Sanjurjo; they were known as Nationalists. • The forces on the left were lead by Azana and were known as Republicans. • At the start of the war, the cities of Cadiz, Saragossa, Seville and Burgos declared their support for the Nationalists. • Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao and Valencia declared for the Republicans. • The Nationalists received help from Nazi Germany in the form of the Condor Legion from the Luftwaffe - Germany’s air force. 50,000 “volunteers” from Mussolini’s Italy also helped the Nationalists. • The Republicans received help from Russia. Stalin sent advisers and technicians. An International Brigade

comprising of volunteers from all over the world also helped the Republicans. The Nationalists held the advantage in the sense that those who fought for them were professionals – the “volunteers” from Italy went to fight with Mussolini’s approval and many of these volunteers had a military background. The Republicans relied on real volunteers; many held idealistic beliefs but had minimal military training. At the start of the war, the military strength of the Nationalists gave them the upper hand. By the end of 1936, 50% of Spain was controlled by the military including the whole of the border with Portugal – a vital supply route. In the east and north, the Basques and Catalans held out far more effectively and the impact of the Nationalists here was minimal. F ranco decided that the only way to succeed was to split the Republicans in half. The crucial battle here was the Battle of Guadalajara which the Nationalists lost. This ended their attempt to split the Republicans in half in that year. However, the capture of Bilbao in 1937 was an important victory for the Nationalists.

• The Nationalists were far more successful in 1938. By August 1938, the Republicans had been split and by December the Nationalists had been successful in Catalan. However, throughout the whole of 1938, Madrid held out. • In 1939, Republican resistance all but collapsed. The various factions in the Republican movement were at odds as to what to do and Russia withdrew its support for them. By 1939, it was only a matter of time before the Nationalists won. Barcelona fell in January 1939, Valencia and Madrid surrendered in March 1939 and the Republicans unconditionally surrendered on April 1st. • The war is thought to have cost 500,000 lives though official figures have now put the casualty figure as high as 1 million. • The war also witnessed the first ever deliberate aerial bombing of a city. On April 27th 1937, the ancient city of the Basques – Guernica – was bombed and destroyed by the Condor Legion of Germany. For Hitler it was a useful experiment into the value of bombing civilian targets. For the Nationalists, it took out a city of spiritual importance for the Basques. For Europe, the warning posed by this bombing was obvious. Hence the attempts by Chamberlain and Daladier to create a formula for Europe to avoid any chance of a repetition of Guernica.
Without any doubt in my mind there are two - WATERING & DEADHEADING... Depending on the temperature and whether or not plants are in the shade, anything planted this spring, together with perennials, may need watering every day or every other day. Plants in pots will certainly thank you for a drink with liquid feed added and if they are looking decidedly sorry for themselves, remove the top couple of inches and replace with new compost. This should help in the struggle to survive the summer’s searing heat! I have seven large daturas in pots and, at present, I have to water them three times a day in order to ensure they will thrive. There is a myth which says you shouldn’t water when the sun is on a plant. Wrong! If any plant needs water, give it a drink! Providing you don’t get any water on the leaves, it will do far more good than harm. Please don’t let any plant beg for water. Should you need to spray now against any aphids or bugs, leave it until evening when the sun is off the plant or it may suffer from scorch. Deadheading is also an essential part of any gardener’s day and will help prolong flowering; it also looks tidier! Some plants you may wish to save seed and sow for next year in which case leave a few dead flowers to ripen and store the seeds in paper bags or envelopes, not plastic, ready for sowing. Don’t do as I do and forget to label the packets though! I can never remember from one year to the next what they are!

Foreign Office urges British nationals to take care on balconies in popular holiday hotspots in Spain Two young Britons have already been seriously injured this summer after falling from balconies while on holiday in Spain, the Foreign Office has warned - on top of four fatalities and a total of 18 falls across the country last year. The alarming figures have prompted the Foreign & Commonwealth Office and ABTA – The Travel Association to warn young Brits heading off on holiday this summer of the dangers of misbehaving on balconies. Many falls involve alcohol, and the latest incidents highlight the need for particular care in popular destinations such as and Magaluf in Mallorca and San Antonio in Ibiza, where recent incidents have taken place. Andrew Gwatkin, British Consul General who oversees the Balearic Islands said: “I urge young people to take care on holiday and avoid jumping from balcony to balcony or climbing back into their room after a night out. Most falls are accidents that often follow the consumption of alcohol, and which can and do cause serious injury or even death. Drinking may well also invalidate your travel insurance, potentially costing you thousands of pounds if you need medical repatriation. “Some falls are the result of “balconying” - deliberately jumping from a balcony into a swimming pool or from one balcony to another. Such pranks can end in the grief of a bereaving family when their loved one dies. “Our staff see the devastating effects of a momentary lapse of judgement and the impact on the victim and their family. The message is: holidays are a time to relax and have fun but please don’t leave your common sense at home, think of the potential consequences of your actions.” Jake Evans and his family provide a harsh reminder of just how wrong things can go when he fell seven floors after slipping over the edge of his balcony. It is amazing that now with the latest technology, we can follow the flight paths of many migratory birds, especially when it comes to endangered species. Last week we discovered more about the life of Tõnn, a Greater Spotted Eagle who ‘winters’ in the El Fondo Wetlands Dolores, Spain, and for all those readers who reside in Murcia, he also spent some time in Torre Pacheco, so he is certainly a well travelled bird This is only possible due to tracking devices that are fitted to the birds and they have come along way. In the autumn of 1803, American Naturalist John James Audubon wondered whether migrating birds returned to the same place each year.
So he tied a string around the leg of a bird before it flew south. The following spring, Audubon saw the bird had come back. This led to the use of metal bands, fastened around the leg of the bird - my parrot; Jimmy has one around his ankle. The problem with this type of method to track movement is the necessity to recapture the bird to gather data etc, so the recent technological breakthroughs have certainly helped to solve this problem. This technology has progressed from short-range Radio transmitters and very high frequency (VHF) packages in the 1960s, to platform transmitter terminals (PTTs) in the 1990s, and global positioning system (GPS) transmitters in 2000s, which is where we find ourselves today.

The miniaturization of transmitters has resulted in greater availability for use on a large number of species, including butterflies. Pictured here, is a transmitter being mounted on the underside of a dragonfly. All this presents researchers and scientists with important data on the movement of all types of migratory species. And why is this so important to Spain? We have already established that Spain is an important migratory route to Africa and a stopover before their ultimate goal. Before they reach their journey’s end they have a huge stretch of desert to navigate, i.e. The Sahara desert. This is a hazardous journey for many birds and unfortunately many die on route, often again due to man’s intervention. Below is a location report obtained from a female Marsh Harrier Fe04-53, during her second autumn migration. “She started to cross the Mediterranean Sea on the 27th of September under good meteorological conditions. Midway the crossing she suddenly stopped moving, and she remained at this location for more than a day. Subsequent signals were received from the south coast of Spain, where the transmitter moved westwards at the speed of a car and disappeared into a small town. The last position was received from a large building. This bird was presumably shot by poachers that await migrating birds in small boats” A recent paper, written by Birdlife international, states “that hunters and poachers kill an estimated 500 million birds as they migrate through the Mediterranean”. A staggering number and a significant proportion of which are shot or trapped not only in Spain but in the countries of North

We are hoping that groups such as BirdLife International are providing some of the answers. It is a global partnership of conservation organisations that strives to conserve birds, their habitats and global biodiversity, working with people towards sustainability in the use of natural resources. They have had a 5 year project and its final act was to produce a Regional Action Plan for moving towards responsible hunting and the conservation of migratory birds in the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean Region which started in 2008 and ends this year, 2013. This we hope will have a positive impact, as not only have they been working with local governments, but on the ground, changing attitudes of the locals plus going into schools and teaching the young children. This will go someway towards helping protecting many more lives of migratory birds, passing overhead in our skies. Further to this, these tracking devices are also helping scientist to understand the role

Apparently Migrating water fowl - most notably wild ducks are the natural carriers of bird flu viruses. It’s suspected that infection can spread from wild fowl to domestic poultry and in turn has threatened not only the health of birds but humans as well. It is a topic of hot conversation right now, as recently as in May 2013, a new outbreak in China has killed 24 people, and the World Health Organisation considers it a serious threat. Housing Construction Could Rise by 5% in 2014 Housing construction in Spain will rebound by 5% next year and by 15% in 2015, according to forecasts presented last week by the Building Technology Institute of Catalonia (ITeC), member of Euroconstruct (an analysis group consisting of 19 European institutes). Although these percentages translate into “insignificant” increases in activity in absolute terms, El Mundo reported that it is virtually the only positive data for the whole of the construction sector, which will continue in free fall this year. According to ITeC, which prepares the report on Spain for Euroconstruct, the construction sector (comprising residential building, non-residential, rehabilitation and civil engineering) will yield by 23.8% in 2013, 7.7% in 2014 and 1.5% in 2015. At a press conference, the head of the IteC forecast analysis service, Josep Ramon Fontana, explained that, although 2013 will close with 40,000 new home constructions started in Spain, which is 20% less than in the previous year, in 2014 the number of new home constructions will rise to 45,000, and in 2015 up to 60,000. Fontana stressed that although these figures are “absurdly low” compared, for example, with the average 250,000 units started during the crisis of 1991-1993, they are “sufficient” to register increases in activity in 2014 and 2015, though with scarcely any “intensity”. Sheila’s Library
Sheila’s Lending Library very generously donated €100 to the FAST Camposol cause. The money has been raised by the members of the library since its inception in August 2012.
The Lending Library has been set up in her garage area by Sheila Jones and all the books are displayed on shelving units some of which were made by husband. The Library has a stock of over 4700 books categorised and set out in alphabetical order making it easy to select your favourite genre and author. At present the Library is open on a Tuesday
between 10am and 1pm and is manned by Sheila who is ably assisted by her neighbour Derek May who like Sheila is an avid book fan. HELP Murcia Mar Menor’s Friendship Group held a Beetle Drive on Friday 28th June at Lui’s Lounge, Camping las Encinas, San Javier. Fortyfour people attended and enjoyed a fish and chips lunch before embarking on the Beetle Drive. If you don’t know what a Beetle Drive is, you throw a dice and draw a beetle using the numbers that you throw, for example if you throw a 4 you draw a wing. There were 8 games and the winners were Pat Astbury and Brian Bourdon, each on 86 points, while David Sykes won the wooden spoon with only 26 points. Never mind, you can use the spoon for stirring things. You don’t have to be a member of HELP MMM to join the Friendship Group and we always have a good laugh and meet new people. Cooking with extra virgin olive oil is a ‘waste of money’
It is the gourmet staple favoured by celebrity chefs for its health benefits and distinctive taste. But shoppers who cook with extra virgin olive oil could be wasting their money - because it loses most of its benefits when it is heated. Olive oil has more antioxidants than other oils and also contains bioactive components - called phenolic compounds - thought to help ward off cancer and other diseases. However, when oils are heated they degrade in quality, say researchers from Portugal’s University of Porto. Writing in the
journal Food Research International, they said their research showed that any kind of heating reduced the power of the phenolic compounds in the oil. They said: ‘Virgin olive oil consumption, as final seasoning or within cooked foods, is increasing worldwide, mainly due to its recognised nutritional benefits. However, different cooking practices, from common frying, to boiling and microwave cooking, undoubtedly modify the olive oil chemical profile.’ Even after being cooked, olive oil will still be at least as healthy
as vegetable oil so it is not worth replacing one with the other, said the report But it could be ‘economically advantageous’ to use standard olive oil rather than pay more for the extra virgin variety, it added. And there are other ways to get the most out of olive oil when cooking, they added. One is to keep heating to a minimum, another is to keep adding a splash of olive oil during the cooking process so that it does not get so hot it loses its healthy
properties. The report said: ‘Olive oil performance under prolonged thermal processing is usually equal or superior to other refined vegetable oils. ‘However, as most of its bioactive components, including phenolic compounds, are gradually lost, it is economically advantageous to use lower olive oil grades and frequent replenishment under prolonged thermal processing. ‘After a short heating period, most olive oil advantages, in comparison with other vegetable oils, are lost.’

VACANCY – WELFARE OFFICER (vOLUNTARY POSITION)
The Help Association is concerned with the welfare of the community and can assist where, for instance, a person is facing problems such as a decline in health, or the need to change living arrangements due to ill health or disability. Due to the increase in demand for visits we are seeking additional Volunteers to take on the duties of Welfare Officer. These volunteers would ideally be qualified and registered nurses who have had previous experience in assessing the health needs of individuals, and can provide them with practical help and advice. Duties will involve: Make home visits, giving advice and information about care and help in the home; Monitoring the progress of individuals’ health and ensure that further support is offered as needed from institutions such as Social Services, Police, hospitals and care providers; Acting as advocate between pensioners and their families who may live abroad; Supporting individuals in the choices they make about their future. If I wanted fruit it had to be peaches or peaches. I gazed glumly at the choice of peaches or nothing and passed on, hoping that maybe another type of fruit was hidden somewhere in the mysterious and randomly stacked back shelves of the little supermarket on the front in Arboleas. Remembering that we were down to our last 2 slices of bread I picked up some rolls and continued to the till. The amply built young lady in charge broke off her conversation with the village elder to attend to my meagre purchase. To fill the gap thus caused in the conversation I mentioned that I had come in for fruit for my husband, but that he didn’t like peaches. Then I saw them - a huge bag of potato crisps; great big irregular shaped slices of golden scrumptiousness, hand carved from real potatoes, nestling seductively adjacent to the till. I will climb mountains, ford raging torrents, fight angry dragons and even pass chocolate for potato crisps, and I expressed this predilection to the young lady. Her face took on a pleasing pink tinge as she explained that these crisps were cut by hand and fried in best olive oil. She didn’t say so, but I have a feeling that the hand that cut the crisps was hers. I picked up the bag and said that I must have them, adding that these looked the best crisps that I had ever seen. She visibly swelled with pride at my words, adding that in her opinion these crisps were the best in the world. By this point we were bosom friends, united by an appreciation of crisps in general and the excellence of these crisps in particular. Suddenly she ducked beneath the counter and came back up with a sliced white loaf. ‘Does your husband like bread? This is very good bread.’ I looked at the proffered loaf. It was built like a German sausage dog - not very big about, but exceedingly long. She saw me hesitate. With my purchase of rolls I already had all the bread I needed. ‘Take it’ she urged. ‘It’s a present.’ How could I refuse a gift from a fellow connoisseur of crisps? I took it. I went in to the shop to buy fruit. I came out with a bag of bread rolls, a bag of crisps as big as Santa’s sack, a sliced loaf as long as a wet Monday, and a new best friend, all for under 4 Euros. Banking on the Last Bus Home
When I was a young man I seemed to be a magnet for all those people I would rather not be seen with or the ones who seemed to have some sort of screw loose. In short it was always me who attracted the head cases. One night, while travelling home by public transport from my girl friend’s house situated on the other side of town, I experienced a prime example of this phenomenon. I had climbed to the top deck, which was my customary practice because I knew from regular use that it was always near empty at that time of the evening. And sure enough, apart from a young couple canoodling in the very front seat, neither of whom it seemed had eaten all day; the bus was unoccupied. I sat down in a window seat near the rear of the vehicle and settled down for the uneventful thirty minute journey home - or so I thought. It remained uneventful for only two minutes, because at the next stop we were joined
by the nutter . . . who of course, favoured riding on the upper deck. I instantly recognised our new travelling companion as a whacko and it wasn’t so much his dad’s 1940’s shirt, half in-half out of his baggy trousers, or the wellington boots. It wasn’t even the noticeable dribble at the corner of his mouth that did it. It was the eyes: those staring, unblinking saucer eyes and that fixed look of glee on the baby face. Standing at the top of the stairs, he slowly surveyed the rows of seats. He immediately dismissed the loving twosome at the front, and they, completely oblivious to his presence, simply carried on with their evening meal, i.e. each other. His gaze then fell upon me. Oh No! I knew what was coming. Then the gleeful expression changed to one of unconcealed ecstasy as he sprinted up the aisle and leapt into the seat next to me. OH NO!! He looked at me for a full half minute and I swear his eyes never blinked once, before he broke into laughter – at least I took it to be laughter, because what came out was a Gurr-her-herrr sound. How should I respond? I mean what do you say to a fruitcake who clearly has only one oar in the water? So I just said, ‘Hello’. It was another agonising wait By Colin Bird : badbirdnow@gmail.com
before he came out with his next line; a classic and real conversation stopper. ‘I’m’s a piggy bank’ he said. Stunned, I could only come back with a classic of my own, although I admit it lacked a certain originality and je ne sais quoi, and I answered: ‘That’s nice’. ‘No I am, look’ he said, and then stuck out his tongue. Now I have to say, I had never seen a tongue as mighty as that one and if it’s true that the colour and condition of the tongue can determine your state of health, then this kid had bubonic plague and haemorrhoids the size of melons. ‘I’m sorry, but I don’t . . .’ I began to say. ‘usum oney o my yungy’ he spattered. ‘What?’ I queried, wiping the spittle from my face. The tongue shot back in like a roller blind late for work. ‘Put . . . some . . . money . . . on . . . my . . . tonguey’, he slowly chanted and enunciating as if talking to a toddler, ‘and I’ll save it for you. Gurr-her-herrr!’ ‘Oh I bet you will’, I said sarcastically, at last finding a bit of backbone. ‘DO IT’ he bawled, taking me completely unawares and knocking me sideways with this sudden change of mood. My backbone crumbled. ‘Aw go’s on’, he pleaded, resorting back to his childlike persona and out shot the fabulous tongue. Trying not to show my nervousness, I fumbled around for some change and practicing extraordinary care not to touch the said organ, I deposited a sixpenny piece, for these were the days immediately prior to decimalisation.

At seventy-nine percent the Alquerian unemployment figure was the highest in the western world. Manuela made passionate pleas for a state sponsored project to get the people back to work. Everyone in the Alquerian establishment took it upon themselves to apply to various international bodies for funding. Purely from a sense of community spirit. None thought of personal gain, at least that’s what they said publicly. The replies soon came in, all starting with the line ‘In the present economic climate …..’ One however, from the United Nations Scientific Development Council guaranteed funding for a project put forward by Don Miguel El Sabio. Alqueria’s only intellectual, well he had mastered joined-up writing. The Don’s proposal? Alqueria’s very own particle accelerator. While Sabio had confidence in his abilities, no-one else did. Most thought it was just an elaborate ploy to defraud the UN of vast quantities of cash. A true Alquerian project. The Government applauded in admiration. As the Alquerian Treasury Minister counted the cash from the UN, the Don marshalled the unemployed of the village. He took over the old television studio off the Calle Generalissimo and closed the steel doors behind. What he was doing was of no interest to the rest of the village. They viewed him with suspicion at the best of times and as he was keeping the rebellious youth of Alqueria occupied they thought it best to leave him alone. He did however seem to be using a great deal of double sided sticky tape and the inners from paper towel rolls which raised a few eyebrows. However in the eyes of the simple villagers intelligence went hand in hand with eccentricity. Then the fateful day. Representatives from the UN appeared at the border demanding to see the results of their investment. Rodriquez went into hiding and Manuela put on a false moustache and pretended to be a member of the Women’s Institute on holiday from Britain. Don Miguel El Sabio stood alone to face his inquisitors. The Don didn’t seem perturbed in the slightest and joyfully led the team to the old studio where he triumphantly swung open the doors. Lurking in the shadows was a contraption consisting of an old Remitroot barrel connected via verdigris encrusted copper pipes to an old washing machine. The silence was tangible. To cover their embarrassment the UN team submitted an interim report which simply stated, ‘Valuable and ongoing work.’ Don Miguel El Sabio was elated and moved to the next stage. The acceleration of a particle, but he needed a particle to accelerate. To the Don’s befuddled mind a particle is a particle and so is a Remitroot seed. How would the particle accelerator effect the Remitroot seed? What mutations will occur within its kernel? We await the result of the first experiment.
The tongue retreated into its lair; there was a look of rapt concentration on my new bankers face, then with a grimace and his Adams apple performing an Argentinean tango in his throat – he swallowed it loudly. ‘Gurr-her-herrr!’ That obviously pleased him. Then mercifully, stretching across me to
look out of the window, he informed the bus in a loud voice that he had to get off and sped off towards the stairs, but not before instructing me to meet him on this same bus the following week when he would return my investment and ‘some more moneys’. Needless to say I avoided the bus for quite some time. The thought of what form the ‘interest’ would take, boggled my mind.

braben’s blog... ‘Black is Beautiful’ Someone once said that a holiday is something you take when you can’t take what you’ve been taking any longer! Well, maybe there is some truth in that, but whatever the reason, I love going on holiday. It’s great isn’t it, a few weeks, or even longer if you’re lucky, of doing nothing and enjoying every minute of it. Well that’s what most people see as the perfect holiday, but there are some who take what you may call, slightly odd, holidays. I don’t just mean willingly going camping in the middle of a wet and windy summer-well, in the UK are there any other sorts of summers? Nor do I mean those holidays that people go on that involve doing back breaking work like chopping down acres of trees for a fortnight, after which they have another three weeks off work with bad backs! No, I’ve found some holidays that are downright weird. For example, for only 3 Euros you will get to have a tour of, wait for it-the sewers of Paris. Yes, you will be led through some of the tunnels that contain the sort of stuff that you would expect to see in a sewer, but in Paris it is, allegedly, classier. I don’t think we’ll go any further with this one, except to say that it seems that there are always places available on the tour. Surprising really! Then there’s the holiday in Mexico which simulates an illegal border crossing. For very little money you can spend a day, wading up to waist deep in streams full of the sort of stuff you would have paid to see in the Paris sewer trip. You will also be shot at-but with blanks they say- and shouted at mercilessly by people pretending to be border police. I can’t really fathom why this is so popular, unless there are some who see it as useful preparation for the real thing! Two years before the National Party gained power in 1948 and started the policy of apartheid in South Africa, Steven Bantu Biko was born. His progressive thinking father encouraged Steve to study to achieve social independence. Steve’s schooling coincided with the 1953 Bantu Education Act which enforced separate schooling for non-white Africans. It legalised the idea that black Africans were subservient to whites, only training them for manual labour. The acts author Verwoerd said at the time ‘There is no place for them (the Bantu) in the European community above the level of certain forms of labour. What is the use of teaching the Bantu child mathematics when it cannot use it in practice?” Steve Biko attended Lovedale an exclusive boarding school where Kahya his brother was also studying before Kahya was arrested and jailed for 9 months for belonging to the Pan Africanist Congress, a banned political association. Steve was questioned and although they found no wrong doing he was expelled. This started his fervour against the authorities. Biko attended the University of Natal to study as a doctor. Initially he was involved with the National Union of African Students; although supposedly multi-racial the Union was centred around the largest, white only universities so other ethnic groups were mostly ignored. In response Biko helped set up the South African Students Organisation (SASO) in 1968 and was elected President. He ignored his studies due his increased political activities so eventually he was thrown out of University. SASO’s doctrine was of Black Consciousness, aiming for political and social improvements for the oppressed black people of South Africa. The SASO became the Black Consciousness Movement. Then to include adults Biko set up the Black Peoples Convention, by 1972 both had become formidable political forces. Biko was increasingly more dangerous to the authorities and in February 1983 he was ‘banned.’ Being banned meant he couldn’t talk to more than one person at a time, nor speak to the public or media. It was now an offence to quote anything Biko said or wrote. He was restricted to the Eastern Cape his
place of birth having to report to the police weekly. The next few years saw increased protests culminating in the events of June 16th 1976, known now as the Soweto Uprising. It was initially a peaceful demonstration by students from schools and colleges protesting at a new law forcing black Africans to be taught in the Afrikaans language. Afrikaans in the words of Desmond Tutu was the ‘language of the oppressor.’ So instead the black majority spoke English. Police set attack dogs loose against the kids who stoned the dogs to death in defence. The police started shooting back leaving 23 dead on the first day. Over the next few days at least 150 more protestors were killed. The next six months saw strikes and violent protests across South Africa leaving hundreds dead. The rand devalued, the economy wobbled, Government was worried! Although not at Soweto, Steve Biko was arrested in August 1977 under the Terrorism act. Peter Gabriel’s song ‘Biko’ recounts how five officers brutally interrogated Biko for 22 hours in police room 619, Port Elizabeth putting him in a coma. Then they left him chained to a window grille for days. On September 11th 1977 he was bundled naked into a car, dying the next day in a prison hospital. The police officers who beat him were never convicted as there were apparently ‘no witnesses’ though in 1985 the hospital doctors were ruled to have behaved disgracefully. In a previous episode of the “Endless Soap” I mentioned, in passing, about attachments, what they were and whether you could upload them without “Big Brother” interference. I completely forgot to mention how to attach an attachment to your email. So here it is! I’ve been focussing on Microsoft’s Hotmail/Outlook.com email account systems because it is the one I’m most familiar with. Today, we will discover the “How To” of attachments and I will cover both Hotmail/Outlook.com and Gmail. The “How To” of Email Attachments First: Hotmail! When you enter the Hotmail/Outlook (HO from now on) site you will see, before you, the button marked “New”, from here you know how to create your email (see previous article). Next task is to attach something to this newly created email. On the ‘menu bar’ (the blue band on the top of the screen) are 5 options - ‘Send, insert, save draft, options and cancel’. When you left click on ‘Insert’ a ‘Sub-Menu’ slides down to provide you with further options. These are: ‘Files As Attachments, Pictures Inline and Share from SkyDrive’. For now click on ‘Files As Attachments’. Now before you is a standard windows search box. Use it to find the file you want to attach and send. An example: I would Double Click on ‘My Documents’, then on ‘Graphics’, Then ‘Photo’s’ and finally ‘RnR Dancing’. I am now in a directory (for those old enough to remember these!) or Folder (for everyone else) in which my favourite pictures of La Jefa (the boss) and me demo-dancing Proper Rock and Roll Jive. I pick one, or by holding down the <Ctrl> key and then clicking on many pictures, and this is then added to the list to be uploaded to the hotmail website by clicking on the OK button. Done! This will take as long as it takes depending on your upload speed which is always about 10% of your download speed. If you want to use the ‘Picture Inline’ option then before you go to the menus, put the ‘I’ bar in the position within the text exactly where you want the picture to go. Then use the menu ‘Insert’ and then ‘Picture Inline’. You will now get the same standard windows box. Following the same route through it as before and this time pick just one photo. You will see that the selected picture is inline with the text of your email. Now: Gmail! When you enter your Gmail account webpage you will see a button marked ‘Compose’. Click on this and a box opens up to allow you to create your email. After the usual ‘To:’, ‘Subject:’ and ‘message’ boxes that have to be filled, you should notice, at the bottom of the screen, what appears to be a paperclip (novel idea – paper clip to attach things with). Hover the mouse pointer over the paperclip and a number of other icon magically appear. For today just select the little “Camera”, which when you hover over it will say ‘Insert Photos’. Immediately you do another box appears and asks whether you want an image from the web or from a file on your computer. For now select the button marked “browse”. From here, everything is the same as with the Hotmail site. There you have it. When you have had a few successful attempts you will also think ‘Simplicity itself’. Next time, continuing on the theme of emails, I would like to show you a free (I love that word) program called “Thunderbird” that make the job of dealing with one or more email account really easy. RUNNING WILD A.C. Events´ 10 K de Catral (8/6/13).
The Saturday evening race attracted over 200 contestants & Vet “A” Lady, Monica McGranaghan excelled with her category win in 43:20. She also achieved 2nd place overall woman, just 7 seconds behind the senior lady winner.
Triumph in the X111 Torrevieja Traversia This weekend was a busty weekend for Torrevieja as it hosted the Final of the Alevin Championships for the Valencian Commnuity in the “XXX1 Jocs Esportius Comunitat Valenciana” and held the 13th Sea Swim across the city of Torrevieja the “X111 Travesia a nada , Ciudad de Torrevieja”. Two hundred and eighty one swimmers from 40 clubs descended upon the Muncipal pool in Torrevieja over the weekend 29 & 30 June. All swimmers were the best from the region having previously qualified with specific times and fought a gruelling two day programme of events. Torrevieja was represented by it team of
Alevin Swimmers Elian Del Rio Castillo, Alexandra Amat, Zoe Connolly, Paula Garcia and Eva Kovalenko. As the weekend progressed Eva set new personal best in 100m Butterfly and 100m Freestyle, Paula followed this theme with outstanding swims and new bests in 400m Freestyle and 200m Medley events. Elian managed to improve on his personal best in the 100m Freestlye and Zoe in the 200m Medley events, Zoe placed 8th in this race and 9th in her 100m Butterfly. However it was the combined efforts of the team in their three relay events which showed the girls strength in their teamwork. In the 4 x 200m Freestyle the girls
storm their way through the 16 lengths to earn 6th place with a time of 11:04:37. They followed this in the 4 x 100m Freestyle relay earning 9th place and in the 4 x 100 Medley relay 13th. The final achievement for the girls was to be placed 9th in the club ranking for the whole of the competition. Whilst all this was going on in the indoor pool on Sunday, two more member of Club Natacion Torrevieja were battling it out in the 2500m sea swim “X111 Travesia a nado Cuidad de Torrevieja”. Ruth Brassington and Yuriy Lymar swam acroos the coastline of Torrevieja and were rewarded with outstanding results. Eurogolf La Marquesa Press Report. It has been a busy week this week. We held an Away Day on Sunday 23 June at Bonalba and our thanks go to Costa Blanca Green Fee Services for arranging the day for us. The winner was Chris Stanley followed closely by Ian Pegg and our captain Alan Venables. The presentation was followed by a card draw which ensured everyone went home with something for their efforts on the day Our last game of the 2012/13 season was our traditional Texas Scramble played on our home course of La Marquesa on Thursday 27 June 2013. 56 players took part in a shotgun start. The conditions were good and some reasonable results ensued. The competition was followed by a brunch and an auction to raise funds for
the Captain’s charity which this year is Help and Home. Two representatives of this organisation attended the lunch and following a short presentation regarding the work of the charity were presented with a cheque for €1126 being the result various charitable activities throughout the season. The money raised as a result of the auction will be pass over the the charity once totalled. Thanks to all those who participated in the auction for giving generously. Paul came 7th. in his category, Veterano “F” with a time of 45:20, which was an unusually poor result for him. John managed a win in Vet. “G” (Over 65) finishing in 44:25, a good result considering the unfamiliar nature of the underfoot conditions.

LO CRISPIN GOLF SOCIETY Roda Golf Club - 26.06.13
Roda Golf course is always a popular venue and so it proved today, there was supposed to be 48 of us playing but in the end there were only 46, but nonetheless it was our biggest turnout of the year. Unusually there was a ladies fourball much appreciated and enjoyed by them all. It took some time to get everyone off successfully and also to retrieve the cards at the end of the day with some people still taking their cards back to the Tavern instead of handing them in at the course. The course with its wide open spaces looked good with obvious signs of improvement all around, but with all the space why do you end up in the long grass or behind a palm tree or worse still in the water was the comment from one player. At the end of the day there was much hilarity and stories banded around in the Lo Crispin Tavern on our return, another enjoyable day of golf. The ones who enjoyed it the best were:

SMGS at LA FINCA La Finca course, close to the town of Algorfa, is the longest of the three Quara courses at just over 6,000 mts off the yellow blocks. It’s a layout that most members of San Miguel Golf Society are well used to with our regular monthly visits going back over quite a long period. Our June trip to this popular venue saw the usual morning breeze across the open terrain strengthening up in the afternoon giving a definite advantage to the day’s early starters. Nearly forty members and guests enjoyed both the good scoring conditions and the first class presentation of the course with the recently dressed greens virtually
back to their full glory. My own tally of 20 points on the front nine was a pretty good indicator that quite a few high scores may well get recorded. The blustery wind made the 16th and 17th even more tricky than they usually are and certainly helped to obliterate my card along with any chance I may have had at creeping into the prize places……but I’m pleased to say that wasn’t the case for the better half! A blistering 22 points on Marg’s first nine was followed by a rock steady 20 on the second half, even in the gusting conditions she held her game together to finish with her highest score for a
very long time.

In a typical wifely way it wasn’t the tremendous chance she had of winning the day that excited her wicked emotions..…it was the quick bit of mental arithmetic where she’d calculated her soon to be new handicap!
Two tremendous scores dominated the Gold Division. Count-back was needed to separate the two 35’s with John Osborne taking 4th & 3rd going to Ben Price. Marg Birtwistle’s 42 earned her 2nd place behind a magnificent 43 from on-form Steve Fleet – fabulous golf from the top 2 and well done to all the prize-winners.
Arriving into the clubhouse, in the time it took me to pay a quick visit, the whole ensemble had been informed that Marg would now be playing off an actual handicap LOWER than hubbie! Well, far from being a chauvinistic male golfer, I, for one, am proud of her achievement and publicly congratulate her……Well done, Petal. I still might have a word with Barry about me getting my handicap cut by a strategic amount under rule 19!! NTP prizes went to John Aitchinson, John Osborne, Chris Hamblett & Brian Staines with Alan Manson’s 40 points securing him the top visitor’s accolade. 29 members and 3 guests set out for La Finca GC on Thursday, 27 June for our regular monthly meeting. No oppressive heat and a light breeze = perfecto conditions for golf. The course whenever I have played here has always been in excellent condition, and today was no exception, although the greens were a little on the slow side which should always be expected after any hollow tining work has been carried out. Onto the competition, and not surprisingly scoring was good, with many players registering 30 stableford points or more. Nearest the pins on holes 3 & 13 were won by Bob Young and Brian Brown, with the longest drive on hole 11 claimed by Joe Murphy. Nigel Dunford won the best guest

Bull Flanagan Golf Society
The society visited Peraleca golf club for this months meeting on 28th June. The condition of the course is improving and good weather added to the day’s golfing experience. Some good scores were recorded but no one managed par. Winner was Alan Gifford on 34 points with Chris Smith in second with the same score, Bill Fantom was a close third on 33 points.

Mike Smith with 40 points was placed second, but the winner (for the 3rd time this year) with an excellent score of 42 was Ian Connell. Ian’s the man to beat this year and it’s up to the rest of us to up our game and give him a challenge.

With five par threes there was a chance for other players to get in the frame and nearest the pin winners on these holes were Ton Gijzen, Ken Owens ,Preston Ives, Bill Fantom and Bill Peters. We all returned to the Bull Flanagan where Chris our favourite landlord provided the players with a great buffet to go with their refreshments. A GREAT WEEKEND OF RUGBY 7’S
This last weekend saw the second Formentera del Segura rugby 7’s tournament with teams coming from as far away as Lorca and Alcoy together with local teams from Elche, San Javier and ITV Orihuiela RFC as well as Santa Pola. Unfortunately, Santa Pola were let down by only half the team turning up, but in true spirit of the sport they joined in with Alcoy for a great day of rugby. With each team playing 5 games and the level of rugby improving on last years tournament, Elche and Lorca ended up as the top two teams on the day. Elche had already beaten Lorca earlier on in the day, but in the play they managed to sneak it with the game heading to sudden death with a try in the last play of the game. With Lorca taking first place followed by Elche.

The real winner on the day was rugby itself and all the teams looking forward to coming back again next year. After the presentation the teams retired for the 3rd half to Bat Pepito in Formentera del Segura for a well deserved drink. We would like to thank the Formentera del Segura council for all of their help and support for this event. We are also still taking enrolment for the Centurion Rugby Summer School, which takes place on 810 July in Formentera del Segura at the football ground. Contact me on the number below for more information. Unfortunately, due to teams withdrawing from lack of players on 6 July the 1st Guardamar exhibition beach rugby in cancelled. We would like to thank HiFX for sponsoring the

tournament in Formentera del Segura. This coming week will be the final test match on Saturday of the Lions down under at the rugby bar in Rojales, the Steakhouse. It will be great to see plenty of support on Saturday for local rugby. Training starts back up at the end of August, more information about this will be put in the papers nearer the time. So if you are interested, dig out those rugby boots and come along and see for yourself what it is like. New players are always welcome no matter what age or skill level you are. MEDALFORD Rocket’s Golf Society was “launched” last week at El Plantio and it was back there for a “normal” day at the golf office, I say normal with my tongues in my cheek as we played a Medalford competition, which did confuse a few. This is Medal for the front 9 and Stableford for the back 9 hence Medalford Subtracting the back nine points from the nett front nine to get your score, the lowest score wins. One of our members went a little bit ‘wild’ in search
of his ball in the lake on the third fairway, he has now put in a request for crampons to be supplied, to aid in climbing back up.

Another act of bravery and kindness from two members when a duck was spotted with a plastic loop trapping its beak closed, it was caught and the plastic cut off allowing the duck to be able to feed. Nice one! Arthur and Robert. Who said golfer’s did not have hearts?
