bullrunning ‘uncharacteristically’ slow for 2013

The Sanfermines bullrunning in Alcurrucén was uncharacteristically slow, allowing the spectators to enjoy not only the occasion but also the beautiful streets through which the running passes. Also the bulls split into several groups, which allowed many of the runners to encounter the bulls firsthand.

The Sunday running, which always attracts the greatest number of runners, and thus is considered the most dangerous, traditionally also sees the best selection of bulls The Casa de Misericordia, which owns the Plaza de Toros, announced that the running was a great success, to some degree because the bulls seemed content to run the route without attacking the runners or spectators.

The day concluded with 4 casualties: J.C. 24, an Australian, who sustained a small wound on his forehead; J.B. 44, an Englishman who suffered mild trauma to both knees; E.S.M. 36, from Pamplona, who sustained a fracture of the radius and ulna and had to be moved from the Cuesta de Santo Domingo; and a 26 year old woman from the U.S.A. who was accidentally hit in the face.

The last two people have been taken to the Hospital Virgen del Camino.

funeral held for drown toddler

Emotions ran high at the funeral of David Torrecillas Campoy, the toddler who drowned in a swimming pool at a private house in Campotéjar, Molina de Segura. The child had spent the day with his grandparents because his mother had given birth a few hours before, and was still in hospital.

The accident occurred when several family members, including his cousins and grandparents began to clear tables and chairs while still keeping the child under supervision. Yet despite their vigilance, David disappeared from view. For a few seconds this did not concern the grandparents, as each one thought that the other one had care of the child. However, when this proved not to be so, the grandmother quickly entered the pool and saw that the little boy was submerged. She rescued him, but he was not breathing. The Centro de Coordinación de Emergencias 112 was called, and while it was en route the grandparents were instructed by the nurses on the phone how to carry out resuscitation. However, sadly, their efforts were in vain, and neither they nor the nurses could revive him.

The funeral took place in the Tanatorio Cano Fuca, in Archena, amid demonstrations of grief by the shattered parents and grandparents.

The Parque de la Mancomunidad de los Canales del Taibilla in Tentegorra has seen a record number of users, in a large part due to the improvements that have been made in the last year and a half. During the weekends the Parque sees as many as three thousand users per day, drawn by the opening of the mini water park.

Many of the users are subscribers; there are currently 25,000 subscribers thanks to the liberalisation of entries authorized a year ago.

Another improvement is the streamlining of the access system, issuing staff with mobile communication, so that they can facilitate the free flow of customers through the turnstiles, thus cutting down on queues.

The car parking situation has been eased by the provision of parking for 600 vehicles at the nearest entrance, where the pathway leads up Monte Roldán In addition to the new pool area with slides, Europe’s largest maze, right next to the Adventure circuit, has been opened.

Another new attraction is ‘laser paintball’, which is in great demand for groups and birthday or celebration parties.

Apart from the new attractions there are facilities for all the usual sports, plus a fully remodelled and modern playground area for children of different ages.

Murcia

Researchers at the University of Murcia (UMU) have determined that 65% of teachers in primary and secondary education suffer ‘burnout’.

This disorder is due to emotional exhaustion that occurs as a result of hard, intense and/or frustrating relationships with students or colleagues.

Specifically, 12% of teachers have the syndrome graded as ‘obvious’, while another 53% are ‘at risk’ according to the results of research carried out by the group Personalidad, Evaluación y Tratamiento Psicológico de la UMU, who evaluated 95 teachers at these educational levels.

The symptoms are: Emotional exhaustion, leading to cold, surly or cynical relationship with students or other teachers, according to a report in Europa Press by the Profesor de la Facultad de Psicología de la UMU, and lead investigator Enrique Javier Garcés.

The Syndrome has 3 recognised phases: in the first phase the sufferer experiences emotional exhaustion and fatigue.

The second phase is characterised by ‘depersonalisation’, when the sufferer will try to establish a distance both emotionally and perhaps physically from others.

The third and last phase triggers burnout in its entirety and completely.

Psychologists call this stage ‘Reduced personal accomplishment’, and occurs when the sufferer begins to doubt their own personal fulfilment at work or in relationships.

There is no clear profile of people who can potentially suffer this syndrome, but perfectionists and the highly competitive are most at risk.

There are also external factors that trigger burnout as, for example, the lack of social and family support. The disorder usually occurs in people who also have no alternatives or life goals, and those who are too committed to their work to the point of confusing it with an addiction.

Burnout is more likely to affect the young, and women. The symptoms can be confused with anxiety, depression and stress disorders, the difference being that burnout is a mix of all these elements.

The treatment of burnout is basically to change the patient’s cognitive processes.

A psychologist conducts a ‘behavioural’ session with the patient aimed at changing their approach to their problems, and developing a sound, realistic and yet optimistic outlook.

Students attending the Antigones library to prepare for their final course exams that will take place next week were surprised to find that the facilities were closed, and, despite their protests, they had to study in classrooms without air conditioning.

This was in line with a decision by the UPTC to economise, and was implemented despite the day in question being intensely hot.

Prescription drugs can worsen risk and effects of heat-stroke, warn health authorities

Spain’s health ministry has warned that certain prescription drugs can worsen the effects of hot weather and make the patient extra-sensitive to possible hyperthermia and heat-stroke.

These include various types of diuretic, SSRI anti-depressants, diabetes medication and drugs for heart or circulatory disorders.

The Spanish Agency of Medication and Healthcare Products (AEMPS), part of the ministry of health,

warns that even without the current heatwave sweeping the country, many drugs of this type can cause hyperthermia at any temperature.

Those taking such medicines long-term or for life, people taking various types of drugs, and the elderly are most at risk, according to AEMPS. Anything which affects bodily hydration or electrolyte balance – such as diuretics or laxatives – or which may alter kidney function, and

all non-steroidal antiinflammatories, heart function pills and certain antibiotics can heighten the risk of heat-stroke and serious dehydration, both of which can be deadly, leading to organ failure.

Statins, fibrates and other cholesterol-reducing drugs, medication for heart arrhythmias, pills to treat epilepsy or diabetes also increase this risk.

Tablets which reduce blood pressure or combat angina, anti-psychotics, anti-neuroleptics, and

SSRIs (Selective Seratonin Receptor Inhibitors) of which several anti-depressants such as Lustral, Seroxat, Sertraline and Cypralex are included in the types of drugs which raise body temperature and can aggravate the risk of suffering hyperthermia.

The AEMPS recommends avoiding taking non-steroidal

anti-inflammatories, particularly those which can be toxic to the kidneys in the event of dehydration.

They also stress that anyone who suffers dehydration or heat-stroke should not be given Paracetamol since it is relatively ineffective and can aggravate liver damage, which often results from this condition.

Mother Esperanza ‘miracle’ to be recognised by pope francis Santomerana Madre Esperanza, regarded as ‘Venerable’ since April 23rd, 2002, will be beatified as soon as Pope Francis has signed the decree recognising her first miracle.

The announcement of this step towards beatification was given in a statement which also reported on another miracle credited to Pope John Paul II, and moves to proceed with the canonisation of Pope John XXIII. Mother Esperanza, born Maria Josefa Alhama Valera, entered as a novice in the cloistered convent of the Hijas del Calvario in 1915.

In 1930 she founded the Congregación de Esclavas del Amor Misericordioso in Madrid, and twenty years later, in Rome, the Hijos del Amor Misericordioso, who now have foundations in various parts of the world.

After a life dedicated to the service of God and the needy, she died on February 8, 1983 at Collevalenza (Italy).

A shrine was built, which is still popular today, and which is where she is buried.

The miracle that is attributed to her, and which is essential for her canonisation, is the healing of a child who was unable to eat any kind of food. The doctors were unable to find a solution, so his parents entrusted him to her. She gave the child water to drink from the Sanctuary.

After this miracle has been verified by the Congregación para la Causa de los Santos, and subject to certain preparations and the parties reaching an agreement, her beatification could be accredited as soon as October.

However, any delay will postpone the ceremony until next spring.

Phil had been involved with choirs on the Costa’s for many years. He was member of the Crescendo Choir for some time, before joining with director Hopkins and the Melody Makers International, to sing his favourite type of music.

A regional head of traffic affairs has resigned after being caught driving at 160 kilometres per hour along a motorway.

Narcís Clé, leader of Catalunya’s traffic department for the province of Girona, was pulled over by the Mossos d’Esquadra – the region’s answer to the Guardia Civil – doing 40 kilometres per hour over the speed limit on the AP-7 just days after fronting a radio campaign urging drivers to stick to the limits to help prevent fatal accidents.

Eurozone Interest Rates To Stay At Current Record Low – Or Fall Further – For A ‘Considerable Period Of Time’, Says BCE

The European Central Bank (BCE) has decided to leave interest rates at the historic low of 0.5 per cent ‘for the foreseeable future’ to aid Eurozone recovery – meaning homeowners in Spain will not see their mortgages go up this year or possibly for some years to come.

In fact, the BCE has not ruled out cutting the rate even further.

Mortgages in Spain have fallen by between a third and a half in the last six or seven years, since the recession started, except those where the contract included a ‘minimum rate’ clause – although these have been declared illegal by the EU, meaning homeowners affected by them will now start to see the benefits of the

plummeting Euribor rate.

BCE president Mario Draghi says interest rates in the Eurozone will remain at 0.5 or lower ‘for a considerable period of time’ and inflation would remain well below the EU’s objective of price stability, given that recovery in member States as a whole – particularly in Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece and Ireland – is expected to be extremely slow.

The Bank of England has followed suit and intends to keep interest rates at 0.5 per cent in the United Kingdom.

In addition, the Portuguese political crisis sparked by the resignation of finance minister Vítor Gaspar and foreign affairs minister Paulo Portas in protest over EU-imposed austerity

measures has activated alarm in the financial markets and meant the profitability of Portugal’s 10-year debt has rocketed and stands above eight per cent.

A man who recently applied for Spanish nationality after the requisite 10 years of living in the country has been given an appointment for six years down the line.

The Moroccan citizen, who has been a legal resident in Santa Coloma de Gramenet (Barcelona province) since 2003 has been given an appointment for March 19, 2019 – nearly six years down the line and in fact, a public holiday, meaning the offices are unlikely to be open on that day.

His solicitors, who are handling his citizenship application, say this means a non-EU foreigner who wishes to become Spanish needs to wait for 20 years to be able to do so – 10 years of legal residence, followed by six years to get an appointment and then another three for the paperwork to be processed.

And British expatriates in Spain now fear they could face the same obstacle if the UK were to pull out of the European Union as a result of the forthcoming referendum.

With many Britons in Spain being of advanced years, some fear that if they had to apply for citizenship to enable them to stay in the country, they may not

live long enough to be able to do so.

But the female civil servant at the foreigners’ office in Barcelona assured the Moroccan applicant’s legal firm that appointments for the year 2019 are standard practice, given the backlog experienced by the high number of nonEuropeans seeking nationality to avoid the future headaches of having to renew residency in an economic climate where they may be out of a job when their permits expire, effectively disqualifying them from being able to renew them.

His solicitors, Legalcity, firstly thought there had been a mistake when they were given the appointment date.

This date is purely to hand in all the paperwork in person, as it cannot be done by post or internet, to enable the foreigners’ office to start examining and processing them with a view to accepting or denying the application three years later.

It means the resident in question, identified only by his initials of A.E., will not know whether he has been accepted as a Spanish national for another nine years, or until 2022.

Lions helping Alpe at Specsavers Torrevieja

The Torrevieja Costa Lions Club are continuing with their support for ALPE, The educational centre for disabled children and young adults in Torrevieja.

Specsavers in Torrevieja are holding an open day in aid of ALPE on Wednesday 24th July, with talks on eye care for young and old. Sunshine FM are supporting the event and more details can be found on Sunshine FM. The Lions are also stepping up their collection of used spectacles which they deliver to the Lions spectacle recycling centre near Alicante.

To date your local Lions have delivered in excess of 8,000 pairs of used spectacles, which are cleaned, graded and re framed before onward distribution to countries where no eye care is provided.

Footwork dance recently took part in the British Legions funday in Playa Flamenca, they were honoured to be asked to perform a fitting finale for this wonderful day organised by the British Legion.

The general public and stall holders who enjoyed the funday were entertained throughout the day with some fabulous acts.

The Footwork Performers ranged from 2 year olds through to the ever popular adults whose ages they would prefer us not to mention!! The finale started off with a wonderful array of flags from around the world as they were paraded onto the dance floor, this was intertwined with ballet from 2 of the younger members who were depicting the release of Doves to promote peace, through to acrobatics and finishing with all the flags once more being paraded onto the stage by the adults, we then visited Scotland with a slick acrobatic routine from the Primary, Juniors and Inters, it was then the turn of the adult tappers with their smart and seamless interpretation of the Sailors Hornpipe which was followed by the much anticipated British Finale, from Dambusters to Land of Hope and Glory, once again the students of Footwork didn’t fail to Impress, from the costumes, the choreography, the music and the

Alcalá del Júcar is located to the Northeast of the province of Albacete, where the River Júcar River leaves Castilla-La Mancha.

Ubeda, Spain (PICTURED) The original town of Ubeda was established around 200 B.C. although its real interest lies in the amazing collection of renaissance buildings conserved in the historical centre of the city. The centre has been declared a World Heritage Site

by UNESCO, and strolling around the old buildings, churches, palaces and plazas, is like walking around an enormous open-air musuem.

Much of Ubeda’s splendour is thanks to the influence of Francisco de los Cobos, a resident who became Secretary for Emperor Charles V, as did his son after him. Because of their prominent post in the Spanish Court, they were both given riches for themselves and

One of the best ways to relieve the stresses of the day is to simply walk them away, scientists have found.

In a report by the Mail Online, walking briskly or jogging really does calm you down by sparking nerve cells in the brain that relax the senses, new research has shown.

Exercise has long been thought to be effective for anxiety and depression, but the brain mechanism behind the phenomenon has remained a mystery.

Now tests on mice show when they are active, soothing neurons in the brain are triggered.

When they are then exposed to a stressor, these neurons calm them down.

For Quesada & Surrounding Area Researchers took two groups of animals, one that ran around and another that was sedentary, and then tested the amount of brain cells that formed after they exercised.

The runners’ brains had a number of new neurons specifically designed to inhibit brain activity and quiet more excitable ones.

The researchers then put the mice into ice cold baths to create a stressful environment.

Professor Elizabeth Gould, of Princeton University, New York, said physical activity reorganises the brain so anxiety is less likely to interfere with normal function.

She said: ‘Understanding how the brain regulates anxious behaviour gives us potential clues about helping people with anxiety disorders.

‘It also tells us something about how the brain modifies itself to respond optimally to its own environment.’

The findings resolve a paradox because exercise reduces anxiety while also promoting the growth of new neurons in the hippocampus.

Because these young cells are typically more excitable than their more mature counterparts, exercise should result in more anxiety, not less.

But the researchers found exercise also strengthens the mechanisms that prevent these brain cells from firing.

Prof Gould said identifying neurons and regions important to anxiety regulation may help scientists better understand and treat human anxiety disorders.

From an evolutionary standpoint, the research also shows the brain can be extremely adaptive and tailor its own processes to an organism’s lifestyle or surroundings.

“Songs by ‘the king’ – for ‘THE KING’

On Sunday, 7th July, the people who turned up at Torrevieja Christian Centre at Avenida de las Cortes Valencianas, 68, for the regular Church Service were treated to something quite different.

There was a celebration of Elvis Gospel Music. The title of the event was “Songs by ‘the king’ – for ‘THE KING’”.

After giving some history of Elvis Presley’s early years in Tupelo, Mississippi; where the whole Presley family attended the Assemblies of God Church in the town;

Pastor Roy went through a repertoire of a number of Gospel songs that had been recorded by Elvis – songs like: “I believe”, “It is no secret”, “Peace in the valley”, “Who am I?”, “Softly and tenderly”; and others.

Not many people know that although Elvis won 3 Grammy awards; none of them were for Rock-andRoll! He won his first, and last (1967 and 1974) for the Gospel hymn: “How great Thou art” (which was sung by the whole congregation at TCF); and the other for the Gospel song: “He touched me” (1972).

Roy was joined by his cousin, Clyde Sandry, on keyboard and backing vocals; before Clyde gave a brilliant talk on “Increasing faith”.

60th Anniversary Coronation BBQ On Thursday 27th June the Anglican Chaplaincy of St Peter & St Paul celebrated the 60th Anniversary of the Queen’s Coronation by holding a BBQ in the garden surrounds of the La Siesta Church. The BBQ was hosted by members of the La Siesta Anglican community who welcomed over 70 members and their friends from the other churches that make up the Chaplaincy.

On a beautiful warm and sunny evening the guests were entertained by Cathy Carson and members of the TAABS choir before partaking in a substantial BBQ meal, cooked and served up by the La Siesta Anglican Committee and several of their friends. After the meal a raffle with a vast array of prizes was drawn all donated by individuals and with fully charged glasses a Loyal toast was made to Her Majesty the Queen. The evening concluded with a further selection of well known songs from Cathy and TAABS All in all a very enjoyable evening in a lovely setting which gave every who attended the opportunity to mix and socialise with one another, something that is the ethos of the Anglican Community. Carl’s Bar ~ Los Montesinos Shim and Alistair

When the previous owner of Carl’s Bar had to retire due to poor health, the new owners Martin and Tricia, continued to support Torrevieja Alzheimer’s Association (AFA) that Shim and his customers had been doing for some time.

A number of Carl’s Bar regulars customers know at first hand what this cruel disease can do, and this has possibly encouraged other customers and staff to help to continue Shim’s good work.

Sadly, Shim passed away recently, as did one of these regular customers Alistair Watt. It was the wish of both men that a collection be taken at their funerals from family and friends, so that instead of flowers, a donation could be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

A truly generous sum of 310 euros in total from the collection at both funerals was handed to Judy Ferris, Treasurer of AFA. Judy was pleased to give to Jayne of Carl’s Bar, a Certificate of Appreciation on behalf of AFA Torrevieja.

and other patients there. Although Alistair was suffering from Alzeimer’s disease, his death came quite suddenly.

Shim, was a very popular man with all his customers, and they were very sad when he had to retire. However, Martin and Tricia have been terrific successors. Carl’s Bar has maintained its reputation for good food , now more than ever with the ‘Special Events’ with entertainment and menus as varied, interesting and excellent value for money.

Saturday 6th July 2013 About 150 spectators turned out to support this event, in the sunshine, at Torrevieja’s Municipal outside swimming pool on Saturday.

The event started with the Costa Blanca Synchronised Swimming team entertaining everyone with an exhibition of individual and collective synchronised swimming that kept the crowd entranced for well over half an hour.

Next up, local hero Adam Stewart swam his sponsored 1500 meters marathon and pleased the crowd by beating his own personal best by a full minute.

Juan Angel, who was Master of Ceremonies, introduced each of the events and entertained the audience throughout the day with songs from his popular repertoire.

The Raquel de Pena flamenco dancers performed a number of dances as part of their routine to wild applause.

A sponsored swimming marathon was undertaken by Swimmers from “Club Natacion Torrevieja” which raised approx.. €500.00 The team comprised: Boys: Yuriy, Konstantin, Elian Girls: Emma, Ruth, Louise, Piroska, Zoe, Paula,

Samira Masters: Beth, Vicki, Gillan and club coach Juanma In total the team swam 28kms. The kids all swam 2km’s each made up of 800m warm up, then relays of medley and crawl – each swimmer doing 10 lengths of 100m’s, then to cool down a further 200m The Masters each swam 2kms - 1500m each before joining the relays and swimming another 300m each with a further 200m to cool down.

The ages of the swimmers ranged from 9yrs to 69yrs !!! not bad really - apart from the fifties there was a swimmer from each decade !!!

A raffle was held with tickets sold throughout the morning with the Alcalde Eduardo Dolon drawing the winning tickets and presenting the prizes. He was accompanied by the councillor for Sport, Luisma.

It is hoped that the proceeds from the entrance fee, sponsored events and the raffle will exceed €2000 with a further €800.00 being donated by Barclays Bank through its Pensioners’ matched funding scheme.

Spanish national newspaper claims Bárcenas ‘admitted to illegal financing of PP’

Ex-treasurer of the PP Luis Bárcenas has allegedly owned up to ‘illegal’ financing of the party by companies in exchange for preferential treatment, according to the editor of a leading Spanish national daily newspaper.

The normally right-wing broadsheet El Mundo published an article this week by its leader Pedro J Ramírez, who had held a four-hour interview with the former senator just days before the latter was sent to jail based upon the judge’s opinion that he was a flight risk.

“Bárcenas explained to me, in the course of a long conversation, that for at least the last 20 years the PP had been financed illegally, receiving donations in cash from construction firms and other business-owners who, in turn, obtained contracts for jobs awarded by government

The defence lawyer also adds that there is no way Bárcenas would try to escape the course of justice since he would be recognised easily anywhere in the world, given that he is ‘very distinctive-looking’.

In the meantime, Judge Ruz has imposed a bail bond under civil law of 43-and-a-quarter million euros in respect of his possible liabilities that may arise through the case against him.

Paying this will not get him out of jail, but if he does not do so his assets to the same value may be embargoed as a guarantee.

This is believed to be one of the largest bail bonds awarded in Spanish legal history.

both to the best of our knowledge tax residents. We have a house in joint names valued at approximately 180000 euro and savings of aprox. 40000. We would like to know how much inheritance tax my wife would have to pay if I deceased, and how much capital gains tax would we pay if we decided to sell?

A . You are going to like the answers. Inheritance tax: If you deceased, your wife would pay NO INHERITANCE TAX, as she would be entitled as resident of Andalucía to 175000 euro tax free, which is more than the value of the estate she would receive. Please note that the 175000 euro exemption in Andalucía, is an all or nothing exemption. If you are one cent over, you pay on all but the first 16000 euro.

Each autonomous region of Spain has it´s own exemption rates, and the legislation applicable (and therefore the levels of exemption) will be the one of the autonomous region of Spain where the heir has been a resident for the larger part of the five years previous to the death. Believe it or not very often tax planning involves moving from one area of Spain to another.

Capital gains tax: you will pay NO CAPITAL GAINS TAX because if you are over 65 years of age and are selling your main home (you can not claim this if you are a non resident), the sale is exempt of capital gains tax.

PHIL SAGE MEMORIAL CONCERT

PIPE BAND SUPPORTS ARMED FORCES DAY

Just one year ago, on 15th July 2012, a very popular man died locally in Quesada, having lost a long battle with cancer. Phil Sage was a bass singer who had been involved with choirs on the Costa for many years. He had been a member of Crescendo choir, moving to Melody Makers International when they formed, and then finally sang with his favourite type of music when he became a founder member of the Orihuela Costa Male Voice Choir, under director Nigel Hopkins.

Phil had been a stalwart member of the Avon & Somerset Constabulary Choir when resident in the UK, and was thrilled when the Orihuela Costa Male Voice Choir was formed. He lived for the choir, and people close to him knew that it was his strong will to perform in their inaugural concert that literally kept him alive.

In his memory, and his honour, the choir will perform a Memorial Concert on Sunday, 14th July in the Iglesia de Santa Maria del Mar, La Zenia starting at 9pm. It will be a happy programme of Phil’s favourite Male Voice pieces, and his widow, Maureen, will be present.

The Torrevieja Pipes & Drums travelled to the town of Pinoso to help celebrate the Armed Forces Day on the 29th June 2013. Paul Thomas, the owner of the T-Tapas Bar at Pinoso invited the band to play to help raise money for Help for Heroes. Paul is an ex service man and has run the bar for the last 2 years. He said that this was an ideal night to raise some much needed funds for his favourite charity. His customers were highly delighted when the band marched down the street in front of the bar making a grand entrance. They continued to entertain the customers and Mark the dancer received a standing ovation after his display of the sword dance and the highland fling. The night continued with live music and a spectacular firework display.

Izzy gets busy with SOUL POWER

Soul and Tamla Motown band Soul Power were lucky enough to gain a new keyboard player this week Izzy Guy-Morgan, the band wanted a keyboard player with a strong voice and a good knowledge of soul and Tamla Motown music.

Recommended by Ray Prentice Izzy joined the band straight away and with only a handful of notes with keys etc written on them she performed a live gig at the Celtic Drop, Flamenca Beach without even a rehearsal.

JJ Soulman (the founder of Soul Power) said ´Now we have four band members that can sing this will make the harmonies even more sweeter and stronger`.

Izzy plans to sing some of the female soul songs such as ´Respect` and ´Dancing in the street` at a later date.

The Soul Power line up now consists of JJ Soulman on lead vocals and guitar,

Duncan Philips on bass guitar, Kenny Dee on saxophone and backing vocals, Ray Prentice on drums and backing vocals and the new signing Izzy Guy-Morgan on keyboards and backing vocals.

Torrevieja Stroke Support Have you got a couple of hours a week to help Torrevieja Stroke Support?

The group has been running for a number of years and helps people and their carers manage the aftermath of a stroke. We meet every Friday afternoon at the Municipal Offices in La Siesta.

The group offers all kinds of help; an Occupational Therapist, a Speech Therapist and a Physiotherapist, we also have art therapy sessions once a month. All kinds of social activities are on offer, as well as trips out. It is totally dependent on fundraising and upon its volunteer work force. We are looking to add to that group. Volunteers come from varied backgrounds, nursing, social care, housewives, even accountants. You don’t need to have had a great deal of experience; we need a friendly face, a bright smile, and someone to sit and chat to and support people who have had a stroke, and their carers.

We also need people to assist members to attend the groups by picking them up and dropping them off home again for which we will pay your expenses.

Man trains tigers to attack him

Animal trainer Randy Miller reckons he’s the only man in the world who can withstand a full-scale assault by a 400lb tiger.

Mr Miller, 45, has trained big cat Eden to leap 15 feet and pile-drive him into the ground in an inch-perfect fake tiger attack.

But it’s all revealed to be part of their purr-fect double act - as Mr Miller, who trains animals for movies, walks away unharmed.

“If a stranger tried to do this, they would get seriously injured, mauled or even killed,” he said.

The father-of-two rears his animals from birth and uses his lifelong bond with them to achieve wild things on the big screen.

At his special training facility in Big Bear, California, he has trained amazing creatures for

roles in Transformers 2, The Last Samurai and many other big-screen productions.

“I like using Eden for the staged attack because she comes at me so fast and hits hard, so it’s very convincing,” he said.

“She’s dependable and knows what she’s doing, but you still need to be cautious and play your role.”

The expert handler’s act with predators is so convincing it landed him a top stunt award for his work on Russell Crowe blockbuster Gladiator.

QUESADA GOLF SUPER LEAGUE I N A U G U R A L SUMMER DOUBLES COMPETITION 1ST JULY 2013 This competition was to be played at the picturesque Font de Llop. Having arrived in plenty of time to sort out the pre-details of cards and buggies, we set off early on a warm balmy day. The course looked in excellent

condition just right to see some really good scores.

With most of the prizes donated by MANZINI’S RESTAURANT ROJALES, BAR SOFIA EL RASO, JOHN SANCHEZ, ROBBIE BURNS POWAKADDY GOLF AND FONT DE LLOP GOLF. Eventually the call was early to start play on the 1st and 10th.

The eighteen pairs

battled through the day with the eventual winners coming out with a mighty 48 points. So this means one of them will be cut severely. Many thanks to all the staff at Font de Llop for our pleasant welcome and to the greenkeeping staff for their hard work. All the participating pairs then made their way back to the Sportsman Bar in Quesada for a hearty meal and the presentation. Many thanks to Ron and his staff for their hospitality. Thanks to Ian and his organising staff, as this will now be a regular League competition at the end of the season, and we look forward to starting the League again in October.

The only let-down to the event was the disparity with actual race distance, which checked out over the 10,000 m , enough to affect somewhat the runners´ times.

Five regional governments in Spain are appealing against the newlyredrafted Coastal Law, or Ley de Costas, via the Constitutional Court.

According to a report by Thinkspain, Andalucía, the Canary Islands, Catalunya, the Basque Country and Asturias say the law text violates the right to equality and invades regional government jurisdiction.

Their regional environmental and planning ministers recall that over half of Spain’s coastline is in these federal communities - the rest belonging to Cantabria, Galicia, Murcia, Valencia and the Balearic Islands - and that they should therefore be allowed to make their own judgments rather than being dictated to by the central government in Madrid, which does not even have a coastline.

They say that 12 areas of coast in these regions have been given a ‘reprieve’ from the effects of the Coastal Law with no clear guidelines as to how they were differentiated from the rest.

Parts of the law text are impossible to understand, and that it is also ‘a backward step’ because they are forced to submit environmental impact reports when they decide to develop areas of coastline, even where the land in question has already been declared suitable for building on.

The Coastal Law (Ley de Costas), aimed at protecting Spain’s shoreline, includes provisions which have robbed thousands of residents of

their homes.

In the event of coastal erosion, the General Directorate of Coasts (Dirección General de Costas) moves the invisible boundary between sea and dry land farther away from the shore, effectively widening the beach.

Any houses which, as a result, find themselves on the wrong side of the line then automatically become the property of the State and the owner’s only ‘compensation’ is the right to continue living there rentfree for 30 years, but is unable to sell, bequeath, mortgage, rent out, repair or renovate the property.

The amended Ley de Costas increases this to 75 years and allows the owner do to all of the above, but they still do not have title to the home they rightfully bought or inherited and the government still reserves the right to bulldoze the property if they decide to do so, with no compensation payable.

Highly-developed areas of coast, particularly new properties which have been built taking the Coastal Law into account, as opposed to those which are several decades old, are rarely affected by this situation as coastal erosion is not an issue.

Local councils in the relatively few affected areas have been offering full support and helping homeowners to fight their case.

There will be two trial fitness classes for teenagers between 12 and 16 years of age at the Sports Centre (padel, tennis and football pitches) on Urbanisation Marina on Friday the 12th and 19th of July from 7.30 to 9.30. These first two classes will be free of charge but there will be a fee for subsequent classes.

Each part of Spain has its own delights, and the area that I live in, although within the boundaries of a protected reserve, is located within easy distance from the coast.

These areas have been built up with tourists in mind, specifically geared for all those looking for some guaranteed sun. It is well know for its great beaches and good selection of golf courses. What it is less well known for, and although abundant, is it’s birdlife, plantlife and walking routes. I have therefore tried, within this column, to make people more aware of their surroundings and encourage them to go out and explore for themselves. Recently I have been covering the birdlife that can be have found, specifically in El Hondo, but if you really want to see birds in great numbers you need to travel further a field and I have touched on a few of these places in the past few articles.

The region I am going to concentrate on today is the Extremadura Region: and within that the Monfragüe National Park which is roughly in the centre of the province of Cáceres

with rockroses. Strawberry trees, heathers and mastics intermingle with ashes, willows and hollies. From cracked quartzite junipers emerge. The centre of the park consists of several small, parallel mountain ranges, between which flows the River Tajo. (It is at present where the Embalse de la Pedrera receives its water transfers). The River Tiétar and other lesser watercourses carve out deep gorges as they flow towards the Tajo, creating a spectacular system of rocky cliffs in which a huge number of birds breed, making it one of Europe’s premier birding sites, and most importantly for me, as you well know my love of Raptors, (Europe’s raptor heaven).

Just in the entrance to the park alone, reads like the ‘who’s, who’s on any ones birding list, but the ones I am most interested in today are the Eurasian Black Vultures.

...HOME & GARDEN It is the sheer closeness of this magnificent bird that excites all those who visit the park. One such comment from one avid birdwatcher was the following “One of the somewhat unexpected things that the vultures would do, is that as they cruised past us, they would look across at us and really stare. They really were staring. At the very least they seemed to be studying us very carefully”.

It would certainly be an impressive sight as The Cinereous Vulture is believed to be the “largest true bird of prey in the world” With females being slightly larger than males it can weigh anything between 7kg to 14kg making another world record, one of the ‘world’s heaviest flying birds”. It has a wingspan of nearly 3m. Its dark silhouette, the presence of a large black feather on the head, and the characteristic neck feathers give this bird its scientific name of monk vulture (Latin:monachus). Similarly, it must also be most the most impressive spectacle to witness the flight play between pairs and juveniles. The image of two very large menacing looking birds interlocking talons and then spiraling down through the sky, must be an incredible, dramatic sight!

Interestingly this species is also adapted to fly at a very high altitudes. It has a specialised haemoglobinalpha subunit of high oxygen affinity which makes it possible to take up oxygen efficiently despite the low partial pressure in the upper troposphere although this adaptability is certainly not required in Extremadura.

So with regards to numbers are they safe? If you were around in the 1970ties, the numbers had declined in Spain, to around 200 pairs, but with some dedicated protection, the numbers have increased to about a 1,000 pairs in 1992 and have now spread their breeding grounds to Portugal. Just to indicate how important this area is for these birds, the number of Eurasian Black Vulture, found in Monfrague Park

are a reported minimum of 339 pairs and up to a maximum of almost 400 pairs - This represents over a third of the entire breeding population here in Spain. Unfortunately this has not been the case in other parts of the world with extinction in many European countries (France, Italy, Austria, Poland, Slovakia, Albania, Moldovia, Romania) and its entire breeding range in northwest Africa (Morocco and Algeria). They are attempting a re-introduction programme in France and elsewhere in Europe, very small but increasing numbers are breeding in Bulgaria and Greece.

Next week we will continue on our journey to find out more about the area and more about some amazing birds that are found within the park and I hope that as always this ‘journey’ inspires you to branch out from the confines of the Coast and discover what the rest of Spain has to offer.

Trouble comes to Rescue centre

The Easy Horse Care Rescue centre foundation (EHCRC) has opened its doors to take in it`s 8th donkey making it a total of 55 horses ponies and donkeys now residing at the centre in Rojales.

The Centre was aware of the sudden closing of a local riding school in Catral and that all ten horses were up for a quick sale. The Rescue Centre had offered to give assistance if any of the horses were

abandoned there. However thankfully the local horse community rallied round dug deep into their own pockets, Got them all out and found good homes for them. All accept for one donkey.

Early evening co founder Sue weeding received an urgent phone call from Linda Torr who had also saved one of the horses telling her that the owner was going back to England that night and the donkey was going to fall into the hands of a local person known to have ill treated horses before. Her friend Paul Carpenter had a trailer and they could go and get the donkey in a emergency dash if the Rescue Centre would be able to take him with in thirty minutes.

Of course we said yes. So trouble as he was named arrived at the Centre. He has since become great friends with our other recently rescued donkey name Sancho Panza so it seemed appropriate to rename him Donkey Oaty. He has such a lovely personality and he is no trouble at all. Sue weeding also went on to praise the generosity and kindness of the local horse community for their efforts saving these horses in these hard times of recession.

In June Daya Nueva Club de Football held their end of season celebration at Restaurant YoYo in Daya Nueva. It was a bigger than usual celebration this year as the Infantils had won the Alicante G9 Championship.

The trophy will not be presented until September/October but this did not make any difference to the party atmosphere.

Along with all the players there were mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters and three ex-pat supporters and their wives. Restaurant YoYo laid on a fantastic array of food along with plenty of beer, wine and soft drinks.

The noise level of the party became higher as more drinks were consumed.

The players were presented with a gift each from the club and they in turn gave gifts to coach, Paco, and Vincente.

The ex-pats: myself, Brian and Dean sponsored a number of trophies. These were for players’ player, (Jesus) golden boot, (Marcos) with 19 goals. The best newcomer to the squad, (Alberto).

Francisco was awarded a trophy for the outstanding player of the last 4 seasons, this is how long we have been following

the team and how long this paper has carried their match reports.

No player was left out as medals were awarded to all of them. The two goalkeepers, Danni and Miguel also received a trophy each from the club. It was a great celebration that went long into the evening from its start at 2.00pm.

Can’t wait for the party when the Division Trophy is in our hands. Bring it on!! On a personal note I would like to thank the players and families for accepting us into their football club and their beautiful village of Daya Nueva. Photo shows Francisco receiving his award.

UNBELIEVABLE ACT OF CRUELTY

This male cat, who could be four or five years old, was recently rescued from a long, slow and unbelievably painful death. He had been left in a small cat carrier, with not only the door fastened shut, but a length of cord tied around the box, ensuring that he couldn’t force the top and bottom of the box apart.

The box was then left in the blazing sun, on a piece of waste ground in Pilar de la Horadada. The poor cat inside would have been baked alive, just as dogs do when they are left in cars in the Spanish heat. He was discovered by a mother and daughter who heard his pitiful cries and saw him thrashing about in the small box, attempting to escape.

This caring and compassionate couple of ladies took him to a vet who confirmed that he was in the last throes of dehydration and would certainly have died inside the box, either that day, or the following day, and it would undoubtedly have been a very slow and painful death.

This deliberate act of cruelty, which would have resulted in the murder of someone’s pet takes your breath away. The person responsible for this would have known that there was no way this poor cat could have freed itself from it’s incarceration.

The cat had been neutered and had had it’s claws removed sometime in the past, so it was undoubtedly an indoor cat. Cats who have access to outdoors find it almost impossible to survive with no claws as they have no means of defence or escape.

He is of a good weight, with no fleas, and is possibly a much loved pet, however he does not have a micro-chip, so it is impossible to contact his owner.

This was not a normal act of abandonment, where the owner of an animal simply leaves it behind and moves away, or takes the animal somewhere, and leaves it. This was a wilful and evil attempt to kill an animal in one of the slowest and cruellest of ways.

This could have been an act of malice, directed against the owner of this indoor cat, or against the cat itself. It is difficult to believe that someone could have given this cat a home, neutered it, removed its claws, fed it well, and then deliberately tied it up in a box and left it to die.

If this is your cat, and you are searching for it, then please contact A.P.A.H. Animal Rescue Charity on 630 422 563, and if unbelievably this is your cat and you ARE responsible for the attempted murder of this family pet, then you should be ASHAMED of this inhumane act of cruelty.

If someone out there is looking for a cat that can live as an indoor cat, and the original owner does not come forward, A.P.A.H. would love to be able to give you the opportunity to make up for this terrible act of betrayal.

French outrage after US deems its cheese ‘filthy’

Indignation is growing among cheese-lovers in France and the US after Washington branded a type of French cheese as unfit for human consumption.

The US government slapped an import ban on mimolette cheese at the end of May, leaving 1.5 tonnes of the item impounded at a warehouse.

American food inspectors object to the use of mites to refine its flavour.

A producer called the ban “absurd” while fans have launched social media campaigns such as “Save the mimolette”.

According to the US food and drug administration, the cheese “appears to consist in whole or in part of a filthy, putrid or decomposed substance or be otherwise unfit for food”.

“This is absurd,” a mimolette producers’ spokesman said. “Changing

the production process would change the flavour. No one has ever got ill from eating our cheese.”

However, French junior minister for food Guillaume Garot suggested this week that mimolette makers would have no choice if they wanted to export to the US. “Our only concern is to work with French cheese-makers towards a new production process for aged mimolette destined for export,” he said.

VACANCY – WELFARE OFFICER (vOLUNTARY POSITION)

The Help Association is concerned with the welfare of the community and can assist where, for instance, a person is facing problems such as a decline in health, or the need to change living arrangements due to ill health or disability.

Due to the increase in demand for visits we are seeking additional Volunteers to take on the duties of Welfare Officer.

These volunteers would ideally be qualified and registered nurses who have had previous experience in assessing the health needs of individuals, and can provide them with practical help and advice.

Duties will involve: Make home visits, giving advice and information about care and help in the home; Monitoring the progress of individuals’ health and ensure that further support is offered as needed from institutions such as Social Services, Police, hospitals and care providers; Acting as advocate between pensioners and their families who may live abroad; Supporting individuals in the choices they make about their future.

first taken a firm grip on something It seemed like a good idea; the stable with at least one hand. poster promised Pilates on a day when Likewise Aerobics is out for me - I I always have a dead spot of time with nothing that I can get on with usefully. simply have too many arms and legs.

A bit of gentle Pilates would allow me I am to Aerobics what a stork is to to gainfully fill my time while improving ballet dancing.

But Pilates, I thought, should be my fitness and flexibility. midway between the two; not too I thought about it, and came to the conclusion that Pilates would be ideal much folding, and plenty of time to for me. I am not, and never have been, organise my arms and legs.

At the appointed hour our class was flexible – I do not fold up easily, and if I were ever to be sent anywhere called to order, and within seconds I by parcel post I would have to go as had discovered that: I can’t touch the floor with my hands ‘Special Delivery, Awkward Shape.’

For this reason Yoga also is a lost unless I bend my knees.

However, I did learn: Always grab a spot near the window, so that I can grab hold of the windowsill as I heave myself up off the floor and back upright.

Try not to catch sight of myself in the mirror, this is a Pilates class, not a monster movie.

And most importantly, wear a substantial and very supportive sports bra.

I’m going again next week. We are going to do kick boxing. I doubt I’ll be any good at the kicking bit, but I can do a blood-curdling martial arts yell!

The Germ of a Worrying Ide a

As I get older, I seem to worry more and more about . . . . well, everything.

I worry about climate change and I worry about the SterlingEuro exchange rate. I worry about the price of fuel and I worry about my intake of alcohol.

Politics; looking in disbelief at the wrinkled stranger in the mirror first thing in the morning; the baby faced megalomaniac in Asia; my alcohol intake – did I mention that? - Blight on the bougainvillea, nasal hair; you name it, I worry about it.

And on those rare days of calm when I wake up feeling reasonably at peace with the world, it worries me silly that I am not worrying about something or other, if you get my drift.

My latest worry concerns those adver ts on TV for the super duper bathroom, toilet and kitchen cleaners. You know, the ones that claim to kill 99.9% of all known germs. They tell us that they zap everything from flu bugs to MRSA, and from e-Coli to esapholidius tuftis. Okay, I

made that last one up, but you know the ones I mean. The ads that show some car toony type creatures that are supposed to be the bacteria, then along comes a tidal wave of the product swooshing down on them and kapow! . . . No more car toon germs.

So great; it would appear that we can rest easy in the knowledge that our toilet rims and plug holes are bug free.

I don’t think so.

What really worries me is the 0.1% that by implication is immune to this stuff. They don’t go into details about those nasties do they. I mean, if these cleaners are so damn good they can deal with such things as the aforementioned, then what monstrosity is still lurking in the wash basin and bidet?. . .What horror is laughing its socks off as the Clorox, Lysol, Mr Muscle and a whole range of Domestososeses and Cillit Bangs come streaming down?. . .What triple X rated, genital rotting, creeping death is biding it’s time waiting to pounce on an unsuspecting mankind?

What puzzles me is that when I was a kid, soap, water and elbow grease were pretty much it when it came to keeping clean and healthy. Lifebuoy for your face and hands and other par ts of the anatomy, and good old carbolic for the floors. Okay, there was always the Dettol for

work tops and grazed knees and the bleach to sling down the loo occasionally. But we would have wee’d ourselves laughing at the mention of a toilet duck!

But here’s the kicker – we seemed to be none the worse for our lack of state of the ar t germ killing chemicals. In fact I reckon that we were a fitter, happier and much livelier bunch than we appear to be today.

I have always thought that if we are ever able to travel back in time to say, the medieval period, then we would last no more than an hour or two before we were hit with the Bourneville squir ts, or some disfiguring skin rash. And just days, before we succumbed to such all time favourites as the plague, leprosy or the bloody flux. Ughh. With the lack of hygiene and basic sanitation back then, these and other nauseating afflictions took their toll. But how on ear th did any of the population manage to avoid them and thrive?

Simple.

Their immune systems were working over time and doing the job they were designed to do, unlike our own depleted troops that make up the body’s defences, many of whom have been pensioned off early because of the array of chemical weapons that have been designed to ar tificially protect us. A bit like

successive governments and the dismantling of our armed forces.

In fact, I would argue that it is these very chemicals that are now our biggest enemy and even the cause of many of today’s illnesses and disorders that were unheard of a generation ago.

Never theless, I reckon the manufacturer who comes up with the cleaner that claims to kill ‘The other 0.1% of bacteria’ will have it made. The question is: will they be in time?

If you open up your newspaper one day and there is a repor t of an outbreak of the Black Death on a council estate in Stoke-on-Trent, then don’t say I didn’t warn you. And don’t come moaning to me with your ulcerated faces, carbuncles the size of ostrich eggs and suppurating sores. I’ve got enough problems of my own thank you very much.

Now I’m really worried. I think I’ll just watch a bit of tellie.

Not What I Expected

Don Miguel El Sabio carefully loaded the Remitroot seed into the business end of his particle accelerator. Actually it was a modified washing machine. A Little Gem Wonder Wash Model A34/6. A turn of the control dial to ‘Quick Spin’ and the contraption started to shake. It then produced a low whine rising in frequency to shrill whistle. It then promptly exploded taking half the building with it.

The Don emerged from the wreckage bruised and blooded.

By some remarkable stroke of luck the Remitroot seed lay embedded in his left cheek. On examination the seed appeared to pulsate and Sabio was certain it was getting bigger. Finding an undamaged part of the building he put the precious kernel in a pot and added compost. As he sprinkled on water the seed grew before his eyes. Twenty millimetres, fifty, a hundred, until it was the standard height for a fully grown Remitroot plant, just over a metre. Another shoot then appeared. Soon a dozen healthy fully grown plants stood erect in the pot.

Don Miguel El Sabio was astounded “They need more water” he said to himself.

He thought he saw the plants nod.

“Plant food” he said and again they nodded.

“A holiday on the north east coast of England.”

The plants shook their orange petals. “two plus two.”

The plants nodded fours times in quick succession.

Rational intelligence he thought, about double the IQ of a Cabinet Minister Sabio calculated.

He needed to find someone to keep an eye on the plants while he went to tell Poyato the news. Loco Paco was put in charge.

Paco wouldn’t question the plant’s odd behaviour. After all he never questions the tangibility of the five foot rodent which is his constant companion.

Poyato was at his usual table in the Bar La Casa Devante. His evening libation was important to him as it was important to all Alquerians. To have it interrupted by an overexcited Don Miguel El Sabio caused Poyato to use some colourful language. The Don was deeply hurt, he hadn’t been insulted like that since he was last at the mixed sauna.

Humouring Sabio, Poyato accompanied him to the now partially destroyed test shed. Poyato expected the plants to be gently swaying in response to some draught or other. As the building now had only two walls instead of the customary four, there was plenty of through air.

Neither of them were prepared for the sight that greeted them.

Loco Paco was dancing the Lambada with each plant in turn, thrusting and gyrating like native Brazilians.

One can only wonder what Loco Paco’s five foot rodent thought of it all.

Well done if you have managed to wade through the articles about “Online” emails. So, before we start on the next level of understanding I have a question for you.

Does the fact that every email provider, having their own unique and individual way of organising the way you see and use their email web page, infuriate you to the point of distraction?

Would you like to have a uniform, standard way of reading and writing emails; adding attachments and most of all NOT waiting for the web page to update or just hang? I know that was technically several questions but let’s not quibble! Then I have a solution that might be what you are looking for.

In the era of YesterYear there were applications provided, at ridiculous expense to you, who’s function was to help organise your business life. Perhaps the most obvious one is Outlook from the days when MS had the monopoly! In absolute fairness, this application, although expensive for what it was, was actually brilliant. Lotus produced something similar, which you can still get for $77, and that too is an invaluable application!

In today’s world where the internet is the creator, and panacea, of a multitude of problems and their solutions, there are many FREE (don’t you just love that word!) solutions to organising your day, emails and just about everything else! So today is your beginning to a standardised email experience. To start your new experience of ease with email, you will have to download and install an application called “ThunderBird” (Cue theme tune from Gerry Anderson’s Puppet TV show).

Your first decision is whether to go “Portable” or have the “Fixed” version. So what’s the difference? In the way they perform and look, absolutely nothing! Coming from the “Old School” of DOS and command lines, it is much more natural for me to want the program, data files and stored emails in one place. This is what you get with the portable version with the added benefits of being able to store and run it from an external drive, such as a memory chip (and I do)! The benefit of having it fixed is that when you do your regular data backup (you still do that – Don’t you?) and only store the data away from your computer safely.

To get the “Fixed” version go to https://www.mozilla. org/en-US/thunderbird/ and for the “Portable” version go to http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/thunderbird_portable.

Having made your choice the installation is straight forwards.

Start the installer, choose where you want the program to live and let it get on with it. When completed the program will start and then want more information.

The first thing it wants to know is do you want to create a new account or use an existing account. As you already have an account select that option, The next screen needs a name (your name?) a valid email address and the password that you use with this email address. Thunderbird will look up the information on the internet and fill in the rest of the information needed to access your account.

You program is now up and running and all you have to do is find the button marked “Get Mail” on the left side of the menu bar and click it. Very soon all your emails will be copied to Thunderbird ready for you perusal at your leisure.

He is an interesting character, extremely credible but haunted by his father’s suicide. His father’s ghostly presence and his taunting of Jack’s pacifistic views eventually drive him over the edge. “ It’s unusual for battlefield tours to be organised while the war’s still being fought.” But it did happen.

Jack’s companions, on first sight appear to be fascists with affiliations towards Franco and Hitler but all is not what it seems. This is what I liked about the story. The reader discovers the truth at the same time as Jack and usually it is too late to do anything about it. Trust no-one. Betrayal is the key word: Not everybody on this little adventure is exactly what they seem. An enigma but who is able to unravel it?

His editor Sydney Elliott wants the real story not propaganda and Jack decides to write about the common man-the people’s revolution not about Franco.

You never saw such a gap between rich and poor. Ordinary people fighting a feudal aristocracy and a feudal church.

The itinerary covered towns such as San Sebastian, Durango, Bilbao, Santander, Gijon, Ovieda and Guernica.

At the start of the tour Jack is disturbed by the inexplicable and gruesome death of one of the tourists which has a profound effect on him and he imagines a hooded figure holding out the poisoned apple towards him . Suspense builds up with the revelation that a man half hidden in the shadows appears to be watching the group closely and following their every move.

The suspense is chilling and the first major climax happens at the Cueva de la Santina in Covadonga, a religious shrine where the dwindling group are held

hostage by the Machados and treated like bargaining chips or hostages of war by the Vice Consul in San Sebastian, Fielding.

Tourists under threat. The panic and fear feels real beyond words.

Ironically, Jack’s article emerges from this terrifying experience as he surprisingly gains the trust and friendship of the Machados with his Esperanto, learning the full extent of their hardships and brutal losses, their persecutions. It’s a painful story but a necessary one to tell.

There are hints of assassinations shrouded in mystery until the end. The guide, Murphy was tied to the rails, arms spread-eagled, crucified in a sitting position against the railings with his fascist uniform removed by the Machados. He was a sitting target, a sacrificial lamb. A human barricade .

What a startlingly shocking and pessimistic outlook for Jack and companions.

The brutal conclusion was that in war there was simply one truth: You identified your mortal enemies, those who would KILL you without hesitation, and you killed them first? Simple survival ethics-KILL OR BE KILLED. With this realisation Jack’s world became an empty void . Terror, bedlam and hysteria dominate this climax which is frighteningly credible.

More martyrs dying for a cause, a touch of romance and rivalry between a Reuters journalist, Carter-Holt based on Kim Philby’s early espionage career that Jack is paradoxically attracted to and repelled by. The final climax culminates in a visit to Santiago to meet Franco in person and a mad cap plan involving an Agfa camera that is foiled. Is this the attempted assassination? The Assassin’s Mark?

At the end, Jack’s life becomes meaningless and his soul becomes shattered and destroyed. He is driven on by his demons to fight instead of remaining the pacifist coward sitting on the fence. He had been gullible and drawn into a web so he put into practice his maxim of: kill or be killed.

His article was published and he successfully managed to expose the lies being perpetrated by Franco’s propaganda team in relation to the legitimate Republic Government.

We live like animals. We have lived like this for five hundred years.

The story is moving, realistic and frighteningly accurate. This was the ultimate sacrifice and you’ll have to read it to understand what I mean!

The two horse - bonnet ornament

stood on the bonnet of nearly every Rolls-Royce motor car that’s been built since 1911.

Charles Rolls started manufacturing cars in 1904 with Sir Frederick Royce selling them from his showroom in Fulham. Their partnership became the Rolls-Royce Company in 1906. The first cars only sported a badge and customers added their own often tasteless and gaudy ornaments which horrified Rolls-Royce. John Montague was the editor of Car Illustrated magazine; he later became the 2nd Lord Montague of Beaulieu. He was a friend of Rolls and Royce and suggested that they ask John Sykes an artist friend of Enjoy Stephens musings? As a car enthusiast John Montague was one of the first members of the Automobile Club in London (now the RAC) and a young lady worked there called Eleanor Thornton, Montague was instantly attracted to her. He was however married and so they kept a respectable distance. Then in 1902 Eleanor became his secretary at Car Illustrated and their love affair started. Apart from close friends their relationship stayed secret, as the Edwardian vagaries of class distinction meant they could never marry as Eleanor was simply too ‘common.’ Eleanor bore his illegitimate daughter in 1903 but she gave her up for adoption.

Eleanor modelled for Sykes in the designing of Montague’s bonnet ornament. The result is a woman wearing long flowing robes or a nightie according to rumour, pressing a finger to her mouth, a sign of their secret love. It was named The Whisper and it can be seen at the Beaulieu motor museum, Hampshire. Rolls-Royce wanted to define their brand, traits like grace and silent speed. John Sykes said ‘here’s one I made earlier’ and altered it subtlety, so the Spirit of Ecstasy or ‘Emily’ came into existence As was often the norm with ‘those upstairs’ Lord Montague’s wife Lady Cecil Kerr tolerated the relationship between Eleanor and her husband, so when in 1915 he was asked to go to India as the Advisor on Mechanical Transport Services, Eleanor was allowed to accompany him instead of his wife.

On Christmas Day the left on the SS Persia, but tragedy struck five days later the ship was hit and sunk by a U-Boat torpedo. The lovers hit the water together but a wall of water made him lose his grip on her and he was pulled underwater. When he got to the surface she was gone. Montague was rescued 2 days later and when he returned to England he had the good fortune to read his own obituary. He searched for his beloved Eleanor for years, never believing she was dead. Heartbreakingly he wrote ‘I should have got a stronger grip on her!’

On Friday 5th July we played Alenda, I have to say that the course is in superb condition, and now must be amongst the Murcia /Costa Blanca’s top courses , it was a joy to see a few marshal’s about to gee up any slow play, but without being over powering as they are on some of the area’s courses.

For this months competition we played a hidden pairs game with the draw being made after the game and drawn out as a high and low pairings.

On to our results N T Pins were on hole 3 John Collins , hole 5 Mike Swan , hole 13 Alan Gifford and on hole 16 Lee Barber each receiving a sleeve of either Calloway or Srixon golf balls, runners up in our pairs competition by means of a count back were Helen Kinsella and Barry Grinsell winning bottles of red and white wines.

Our winners on the day were

Phil Harris and Steve Edwards winning a selection of different wines, the best card of the day was Phil Harris who received more bottles of red and white wines also , which he gave back to the society , to be used for another event , Alan Gifford donated bottles of red wine which were awarded to our lowest scoring pairings pair being Bill Peters and Neil Metcalf.

Winner of the football card was Preston Ives , winner of the Mini Golf Bar weekly meat draw was Bill Fantom , the meat draw is arranged by the Mini Golf Bar .

Finally we returned to the Mini Golf bar in Quesada for our presentation , a couple of beers and some welcome snacks , that we all would like to thank our hosts at the Mini Golf Bar for providing .

Our 3rd visit to the world of the IRM courses saw us at the Mar Menor Golf Resort and it must be said that it was a pleasure to play this track with the fairways and greens in quite excellent condition. Not only that, this is a course where the staff appear to take delight in servicing your golfing needs, unlike one or two other courses. The general consensus after the game was for a definite return when possible.

The only downside (if one can even venture to call it that!) was the heat and the humidity.

Summer for sure, has arrived and with a vengeance. Golfers now need to ensure that they take on plenty of liquids during the round, dehydration is silent but the effect is dramatic and studies have shown the adverse effect it can have on a golf game.

Yes, Independence Day saw the Golf Club for the People by the People playing this great course in what can only be described as ideal conditions and a course that you cannot fault in any way shape or form, well done to Alberto, Vanesa and all their staff for their efforts also great to see 18 buggies all lined up displaying the TORREGOLF.EU logo on the front screen.

It was a usual Stableford Competition split into 2 Categories to-day with the prize winners being Category 1. 1st. Ken Holmes 38 points 2nd. Robert Marchant 33 on c/b from Dunstan Taylor and 4th.

The yellow blocks were placed on the competition tees and when you realize that this makes the course only around 130 mts less than the whites, a glance over your shoulder found most of the pro tees only a few paces back. I’m sure all players were pleased to find that the 17th was the exception to the rule!

It was good to see Barry in attendance for the day although he’s still not quite ready for partaking. Understandably, rather like a kid who’s had his favourite toy taken away, he’s missing the golf terribly and to spend five or six hours at least breathing in the atmosphere probably helped a little…….or was he simply getting under Val’s feet?

Only three of the par 3’s gave up their NTP prizes and they went to Ken Flaherty, Norman Padmore and Derek Johnston. Fellow scouser, Brian Whitby, took the guest prize with a very commendable 37 and Ross Rankin came a close 2nd with

John Aitchinson once again took the top slot in the silver division with a healthy 40 points leaving a count-back situation to sort out the following three 38’s !!! This resulted in 2nd spot going to Ellen Drakesmith, 3rd to Norman Padmore and 4th to Keith Stevenson.

The gold division saw fellow Scotsmen, Willie Buchanan (39) and Alan MacDonald (38), coming 1st and 2nd, proving themselves to be a good omen for Andy Murray’s bid later in the day for a spot in Wimbledon’s semi-final. Phil Ashby and John Drakesmith needed a count-back decision on their 35’s and were awarded 4th and 3rd respectively…..that’s in the golf by the way, not at Wimbledon!

PETANCA LOSES A GREAT PLAYER News has just been received that Miguel Lopez had lost his fight against a long illness.

Miguel has been an outstanding petanca player over the past 20 years, with his brother Paco, they won numerous competitions throughout France and Spain, including a top class event in Marseille when they took the coveted Bronze trophy. Miguel was

a regular entry in the European Day Petanca championships held in Torrevieja for the past eleven years.

El Plantio 2 Golf Society On Tuesday we held an individuals competition, this was the Medal/Ford, this consists of the front nine holes played as a Medal round and the back nine as a Stableford. 17 members were playing this week.

It was a case of lucky number 10 as all three winners had a 10 handicap. One member managed to score a 9 on the seventh, but as he still had not got over the water by then he decided to give that one a miss and have a noreturn on his card.

El Plantio 2 Golf Society, are full members of the Par 3 course at El Plantio and anyone who would like to join us would be welcome.

We meet at 9:00am on Tuesday for our main weekly competition and on Friday and Sunday at 9:00am for a friendly Stableford game.

Quesada Golf Society at Alenda Golf Course Wednesday 3rd July Alenda Golf Course was our host today as we we got to grips with the fast greens and excellent conditions at the course.

This was the second round of our eclectic competition, everyone seemed to be playing pretty well out there as there were no hold ups and on asking our members if they had any snippets to impart about their games or even their partners the answer was always the same “no nothing exciting happened out there today”, so well done to all at Alenda for the hard work put in to keep the course in such superb condition.

A fine days golf was had by all today at Altorreal Murcia, unfortunately yet again the scores did not reflect the playing conditions, which were perfect. But hey who cares? we had a day out in the sun with good companions, it’s got to be better than work!

ROCAJUNA PETANCA OPEN PAIRS This end of June pairs championship attracted a good class line up.

With each pair playing 5 games this was a good test, which resulted in just one pair remaining unbeaten runners up were George and Francios

of Rocajuna, they just edged out Santiago and Francios of Amigas Belgas, they had both won 4 games each.

In fourth place were Pepino and Andre of France, with Paco Lopez and Roger Seymour taking 5th place.
