murcia’s agricultural losses

Producers and exporters of fruits and vegetables who are members of Proexport consider that Murcia loses no less than 130 million euros in aid from the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). Proexport explained that production work generates 450,000 full-time jobs, to which must be added the significant number of indirect jobs and all economic activity related to the production. The Consejero de Agricultura y Agua, Antonio Cerdá, argued that the allocation of funds for the Region of Murcia ‘remains the same’ as the fruit and vegetable industry has never received this aid, therefore cannot claim to be losing it. He said ‘They will not lose 130 million euros in aid, because they have never received these grants.’ He added that ‘No other region applied for to their fruit and vegetable production because it is considered an industry that gets its income through markets.’

three spanish mountaineers die in summit attempt

An attempt on the summit of Gasherbrum I, part of the Colossus of Karakoram, on July 21 has ended with the death of three Spanish mountaineers. The three, Abel Alonso, Álvaro Paredes and Xevi Gómez, were last in contact with their team on 22 July. On 26 July, after 5 days of adverse weather conditions, a reconnaissance flight confirmed the team’s worst expectations: the three companions had died. A statement was issued from Gasherbrum Base Camp, and was confirmed by a Sherpa rescue team. The Spaniards were the only members of the team to make the summit on 21 July. A helicopter search was launched from Sharku, but the climbers were not seen, and the search had to be called off due to bad weather. Javier Garrido, the representative of Aragón Aventura, said that it was too dangerous to search for their bodies, and he was not going to put other members of the team at risk. But Said Anwar, from Lela Peak, the Pakistani agency that organised the expedition, said that a search would be made when conditions improved.

911,000 euro fine supported by litigation division

The Sala de lo Contencioso del Tribunal Superior de Justicia de Murcia (TSJ)(Litigation Division of the Superior Court of Justice of Murcia) has dismissed the appeal by the company Justo y Manoli, S.L., filed against the judgment of a Court that supported the 911,000 euro fine imposed by the municipality of Mazarrón. The fine was in relation to the building by Justo y Manoli, S.L. of 93 bungalows without a license. The sentence relates to the resolution by the Alcaldía, issued in May 2010, imposing a fine on the constructor, who had committed a serious planning offense related to housing in Camposol. The decision was appealed to the Supreme Court with the Company claiming that, among other circumstances, the offense had expired and that the Alcaldía, had violated the principle of proportionality. The Tribunal replied that ‘it should be noted that the license was sought for the construction of tourist bungalows, which requires first obtaining a business license.’

research develops cement that conducts electricity

Researchers at the University of Alicante (UA) have developed a cement based material with carbon nanofibres which makes the cement an ‘excellent’ conductor of electricity, as reported by sources from the University. This technology is able to extend the uses of cement into new areas. The new material has been designed and patented by the Grupo de Investigación sobre Hormigones Conductores Multifuncionales del Departamento de Ingeniería Civil de la UA. According to the Head of Research, Professor Pedro Garcés, ‘This technology enables buildings to stay warm, or to prevent the formation of ice on infrastructure, for example, roads, buildings, aircraft runways and many others.’ ‘With this new material it will be possible to preserve the structural properties of the concrete

assurances for paramount park & lifestyle centre go-ahead

The Concejalía de Urbanismo has issued assurances that Premursa has been awarded the tender for 70% of the total construction of Paramount Park and the LifeStyle Center shopping complex. Although the intention of Premursa is to begin work in September, Concejal Ángel Cánovas worried that it will be ‘difficult to meet’ this deadline because problems with the Pleno reratification of the revised text of the draft. ‘We estimate that by October or November we will be willing to grant licenses to start these works, as long as the company submits the necessary documentation.’

‘suspected’ burglar became stuck in a chimney!

Francisco M.M., who became stuck in a chimney and was rescued by the Consorcio de Extinción de Incendios de Alcantarilla in front of dozens of witnesses at the Mesón La Rueda de Alcantarilla, maintained that he had no intention of robbing the Meson. He argued in court that he had been ‘on watch.’ In view of his denials, the Judge ordered him to attend the court monthly until a verdict was reached. Francisco, 32, who lives in Alcantarilla, has been arrested twelve times for burglary and is an old acquaintance of the Policía Local and Nacional. After his charge of attempted robbery at La Rueda he has posted his story on social networks.

think before you speak!

The Audiencia Provincial de Murcia (Murcia Provincial Court) confirmed the sentence of a fine of fifteen days, set at six euros per day, imposed by the Juzgado de lo Penal de Cartagena on a Concejal del Ayuntamiento de San Javier, for saying in the course of a Council meeting that a technician ‘was receiving mental treatment.’ The ruling, which is confirmed now by the Audiencia Provincial de Murcia, refers to an incident that occurred during the plenary meeting of the council on September 11, 2007. The incident hinges around a report being made by the technician, in which he made errors and repeated himself, but blamed his mistakes on ‘fatigue’. However, the defendant claims that the technician was is receipt of treatment, and that this fact was known to the full Council. Matters got out of hand when the local television repeatedly broadcast the incident. The Court ruled that this constituted ‘moral harm’ towards the affected person, and for that reason imposed the fine.

Águilas fire results in evacuation of apartment block

A fire in a block of flats in central Águilas resulted in the evacuation of resident of the entire block. The fire, which had originated on the third floor for reasons still unknown, was attended by the Policía Local and the Guardia Civil, as well as the retained firemen of the CEIS. In total, twelve residents of the building had to be treated by medical personnel of the SUAP, the SUE and the Cruz Roja de Águilas, as well as members of the Protección Civil. Of the 12 persons requiring assistance, seven of them needed attention after suffering smoke inhalation and five suffered anxiety attacks, including one pregnant woman. Subsequently the medical staff decided to move four of the injured to the Hospital Rafael Méndez de Lorca for tests and observation.

Santiago rail tragedy

Recordings of telephone conversations and subsequent statements from train-driver Francisco Garzón del Amo reported him as admitting he had been travelling at 190 kilometres per hour in an 80kilometre limit. And his colleagues across Spain, other members of the train drivers’ union say ‘better safety systems’ in place on the A Grandeira curve at Angrois, four kilometres south of Santiago de Compostela, ‘would have stopped the tragedy from happening’. According to press reports, the automated braking system was not in place on that part of the line and the driver would have needed to slow down manually, they say, although they insist that it is a near-impossible feat, reducing speed from 200 kilometres per hour on the high-speed AVE line to 80 kilometres per hour on the regional line, both parts of the same track, within a matter of seconds. Witnesses say the driver was standing on the line just after the accident, covered in blood, and repeatedly saying, ‘I’m sorry’. He told police, “I’ve messed up,” and admitted that he had ‘wanted to die’ when he saw what had happened. A telephone conversation showed him as saying, “I’ve derailed, what am I supposed to do about it, what do I do.” Colleagues of the 52-yearold driver, who is said to be very experienced, claim they are ‘surprised’ by how quickly he was arrested and charged. They added that ‘it could not have been entirely his fault’ since there is no warning signal and nothing making obligatory the change in speed limit, a

difference of 120 kilometres per hour and on a bend. The union says it seems ‘unfair’ that the driver has been arrested so quickly after the accident, especially given that the black box – currently in the hands of the court – has not been opened yet to find out whether there were infrastructure-related problems coming into play. Spain is a world leader in high-speed rail transport and this is the first time ever in the history of the AVE link that an accident involving fatalities has occurred. Its rail travel safety history has always been impeccable, although a major accident in Palencia, Castilla y León and the devastating metro crash in Valencia, both in 2006, have blighted its record. Authorities stress that rail travel remains one of the safest forms of public transport and Spain in particular has some of the world’s most sophisticated and intricate technological systems in place. A British passenger on board the fateful train which crashed and split into three before catching fire just outside Santiago de Compostela, in Galicia, on Tuesday has suffered numerous broken bones – but is alive and out of danger, according to embassy sources. Telesales worker Mark Woodward, 38, who is married to a Spanish woman with one daughter, has had his spleen removed and has suffered broken ribs and a fractured pelvis. The expatriate – who was born in Mansfield (Nottinghamshire) but lives in Galicia with his Spanish family - revealed he went flying

through the air over the seat in front, sustaining a blow to the head when the train derailed and hit a wall. His family found out from the press before the British embassy in Spain had had a chance to tell them. Mark’s stepfather Robert Spencer reveals his ‘horror’ at seeing the young father being helped across the track by a National Police officer and another civilian, covered in blood and with his shirt ripped open. Mr Spencer said he was ‘grateful’ that his stepson was alive and ‘apparently walking and okay’, but described seeing him in the newspaper as ‘shocking’. Mark’s mother has flown out to Galicia to be with her son, who remains in intensive care after surgery but is now said to be out of danger. She is reported to be an experienced nurse who had ‘seen everything’, but still found the sight of her son ‘bandaged up’ and ‘with tubes everywhere’ extremely distressing. Luckily, Mark’s wife and daughter were not on the train with him. He is thought to be the only Briton injured in the crash, and none of the 79 who perished are believed to be British. Names and photographs of most of the fatal victims have been published online, and include at least 10 foreigners. So far, two unrelated French

citizens – a man and a woman, one Italian man, one woman from the Dominican Republic, a Mexican woman, an Algerian man, an American woman born to Colombian parents, a Brazilian man, a Colombian woman, and a Venezuelan man have been named among the deceased. To date, information on those who lost their lives shows they were all adults aged 18 to 93, aside from one two-year-old girl, Daniela Martín, from Ferrol, whose father and 10-year-old brother were unharmed but whose mother Lidia, 35, also perished.

THE THEATRE THAT NEVER WAS. PILAR DE LA HORADADA It was around 2008 when building work slowed to a stop, at what was to have been a theatre, indoor auditorium, music school and cultural centre. From my working in theatres in the U.K., looking at the height of the steelwork, I can only guess that the architect envisaged grand productions taking place at theatre, flying scenery to quite unnecessary heights, which, as it turned out, played a part in it’s downfall. Mayor Jose’ Fidel Ros, explained that more than 4 million euro as been spent on La Paloma, as the structure is known, so we must do what we can with it. The justification to call a halt to additional work on the building, was simply because it was just too heavy for it’s foundations. The large underground car park became a “No go” area, because of the danger of subsidence. The council has a solution. At an additional cost of 87,000 euro, they are going to remove the top four floors of the tower to make it lighter, so bang goes flying “French Flats” into the stratosphere then! Mayor Ros has warned that it is possible that the council may be hit with compensation claims from the builder, for materials so far used, engineering reports and site security over the years. But hold on Jose’, the 4 million euro already spent, I assume had been paid to the builder, to buy materials to build La Paloma in the first place! If the architects and structural

Sport

engineers used, had no connection with Pilar Council, apart from being asked, no doubt for a generous fee, to do the work, then in my books, any claims for compensation, would be between the builder Intersa, and architect, along with the structural engineer. You employ someone to design and build a project, in this case, La Paloma, because they are experts in their own field. The ball is very much in their court, not your council chamber. When the R.S.J.’s have been cut away, and “Who owes what to who”, is sorted, Mayor Jose’ tells me that La Paloma will be home to the municipal library. Whether one can park one’s Barchetta in the underground car park, without fear of entombment, is another question. Have I ever mentioned, in past “Bulletins” the time I worked as “Follow Spot” at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre? Oh! I have, sorry.

IN PRAISE OF SEGREGATION It was 1986, that wise members of the council within the Town Hall in Pilar De La Horadada, took steps to break away from “The Big House” in Orihuela City. The rest, as is said, is history. Each year, this brave move to run Pilar, from Pilar, for the good of the residents of the town, is celebrated in the Church Square. Sunday evening, it was time for “Cha’kara” to take to the stage, and entertain, so well, the locals and visitors. To conclude the celebrations, Tuesday last, will have heard the ringing of the church bells, along with, of course, a grand firework display. Tales are still told to this day, that during the early years of independence from Orihuela

City, on dark and stormy nights, boundary markers mysteriously moved, back and forth, at demarcation lines! A reason perhaps, why these white marker posts, are now firmly cemented into the ground.

A REPRIEVE FOR EL CASTELAR

During a well attended evening meeting at the El Castelar College, San Pedro del Pinatar, two weeks ago, parents heard that the best course of action, to save the college, at this time, would be for the college to become a “Co-operative”. As a sign of goodwill and intent, parents were asked on the evening, that a sum of 150.000 euro would have to be raised, this same week, and placed into the “Hands” of the arbitrator and his legal team. To ask parents to find some 1,500 euro each, when

times are financially tight, was not really not what these good people wanted to hear. From a show of hands, on the evening, of parents willing to part with such a large amount of money, it was clear that this figure would not be reached. I commented in a “Bulletin” some two weeks ago, that my thoughts to save this “Theatre of excellence”, would be if an entrepreneur came in before the end of July, with an agreement to take on the college, with all it’s inherited problems. My bulletin this week should have an “EXCLUSIVE” banner! I can now reveal to Sol Times readers, that such an individual has agreed to become involved with the college. I have no other information, apart from the gentleman hails from the fine city of Murcia. Time will be required to re-schedule the debt, and to look at the teacher to pupil ratio, but the school will open for the new term later in the year. This “Theatre of excellence” will not, now, have to go “Dark”.

From 9pm, in The Square this time, there is musical performances by JP’s British and Spanish singers, along with both a beauty and a “Mr. & Mrs.” Mil Palmeras contest. Saturday brings African big game on the beach at 10.30am, along with a running race around the town at 7.30 PM.. At 10pm, it’s time to dance with orchestra “Dolce Vita” in The Square, should you still have the stamina! Lightning Forces Alicante-Bound Flight To Make ‘Precautionary’ Landing

A Ryanair flight bound for Alicante from Edinburgh had to land at Glasgow Prestwick airport just minutes after take-off due to having been struck by lightning, sources from the low-cost airline confirm. The flight had just left the Scottish capital at 18.15hrs BST (19.15hrs Spanish time) during a storm when it was hit by a bolt of lightning and forced to touch down at the nearest airport. Aviation engineers inspected the craft fully and gave it the green light to fly shortly afterwards. The pilot then proceeded to Alicante, where the rest of the flight went without a hitch and landed with a slight delay at its Costa Blanca destination. A spokesman for the Irish-based airline apologised for the ‘short delay’ in reaching

the air terminal of El Altet – soon to be renamed Alicante-Elche Airport – but said the safety of passengers, crew and craft were the company’s number one priority. Experts say aircraft in flight are frequently struck by lightning, but that the electrical surge is ‘earthed’ in the same way as it is when a car is struck, and that the passengers rarely notice anything other than a brief episode of turbulence as a result. It is rare that a flight would need to be suspended or cancelled as a result of an electric storm en route. In the case of the Ryanair flight, the decision to land in Glasgow was purely a precaution to check no damage had been sustained by the craft.

Homes evacuated as Barcelona forest fire threatens residential area

Bárcenas’ assets to be embargoed

Former treasurer and senator of the PP Luis Bárcenas has been unable to pay the 43-and-a-quarter-million-euro bail release applied by judge Pablo Ruz. As this bond relates to his civil liability in respect of possible moneylaundering and acceptance of bribes on behalf of the PP party, it is not a payment designed to get him out of jail, but a measure applied so that those on trial do not try to ‘hide’ or ‘lose’ their assets to avoid having to pay compensation when the verdict on their case is passed. Bárcenas has been in prison since June 27 and will remain there until the time of his trial where, if he is considered innocent, he will be released or if he is guilty, will serve the remainder of any custodial sentence awarded. Given that the accused has not paid up within the timescale given, he is now required to present the judge with a list of his assets to be embargoed. Bárcenas’ solicitor Javier Gómez de Liaño intends to lodge an appeal against what is one of the highest bailbonds ever awarded in Spain, given that the ex-treasurer’s former lawyers Miguel Bajo and Alfonso Trallero had their own appeals rejected. The bail release is almost double the 28.1 million originally called for by the prosecution service, given that the amount of tax Bárcenas allegedly avoided paying has been found to be much higher than originally envisaged. And latest reports say Bárcenas’ wife, Rosalía Iglesias, withdrew 6,000 euros in cash the minute the couple got wind of their implication in the trial.

A forest fire in the province of Barcelona has caused four homes to go up in flames and an entire residential complex to be evacuated. The blaze broke out yesterday (Sunday) near a restaurant in Vallirana at around 19.00hrs and has wiped out over 100 hectares of countryside. Emergency services say the inferno has spread towards the urbanisations, or housing developments Can Bugunyà

and Vallirana Parc, where between 1,500 and 2,000 people live. Residents on various streets – C/ Moreneta, C/ Lurdes, C/ Madrid and C/ Baleares on the latter urbanisation have been forced to flee their homes, while the rest were told it was safe to stay put as long as they did not step outside or open any windows or doors. High winds and temperatures of at least 37ºC in the shade have made it

difficult to bring the fire under control, despite the presence of 18 police cars and another 62 fire engines, helicopters and hydroplanes, firefighters, forestry brigade workers and the Civil Protection squad. The flames continue to burn and emergency forces are working tirelessly to prevent them from engulfing the residential areas, although in the early stages of the fire four homes had already suffered damage.

Hell’s Angels Members Arrested In Mallorca Over ‘Mafia Activities

Members of the German mafia who belong to the Hell’s Angels Motor Club (HAMC) have been arrested in Mallorca and charged with money-laundering, blackmail, illegal possession of firearms, human trafficking, drug-dealing and causing grievous bodily harm, according to a report by ThinkSpain. The Hell’s Angels are made up of motorcyclists of numerous nationalities – although mostly German – and have branches or ‘chapters’ in 40 countries on all five continents. One of these is based in Bulgaria and is responsible for forging documents, especially passports and national identity cards. They are known to have kidnapped a large number of young women to force them to work as prostitutes in German brothels and even forced the victims themselves to deliver the proceeds to other Hell’s Angels members in Spain, as well as stealing their identities for loans and purchases of goods to avoid capture. The 25 bikers arrested in Lloret de Vistalegre (Mallorca) this week had planned to build a Formula 1 Grand Prix circuit on the island to launder money from their illicit dealings in Turkey and Germany, says National Court judge

Eloy Velasco. Two years of investigations have led to the ‘chapter’ of the Hell’s Angels in Mallorca – said to be the largest group of this particular mafia in the world – being traced to a villa on the island and a further 30 properties raided during which National Police and the Guardia Civil seized hundreds of firearms, knives and tasers, 10 cars and four motorbikes – all top-of-the-range models – boats, jewellery, 50,000 euros in cash, and various amounts of cocaine, marijuana and ‘designer’ drugs. The gang had set up in Mallorca because of its geographical location and the fact that the part of the island in question is heavily-populated with foreigners, meaning they could pass by unnoticed. This also gave them a constant source of people to threaten and blackmail, given that the Hell’s Angels normally target people who are foreign to the country they are set up in. The group of 25 who are being held for questioning have been the subject of an international arrest warrant issued by Germany for crimes committed in their home nation.

Heatwave strikes Spain this week with temperatures of 43ºC

Temperatures could rise to a sweltering 43ºC in the shade from Wednesday until the other side of the weekend as another heatwave is set to strike mainland Spain. And night temperatures will be an average of 25ºC across the country, hot on the heels of Barcelona airport’s 26.1ºC on Saturday, the ‘highest low’ since 1924. No rain and only very light winds are expected throughout the country, and not

even the usual damp and chilly north-west will see a drop until at least Thursday.

Even then, the rain will be little more than a drizzle, says the State meteorological agency, AEMET. Inland Andalucía and Murcia will see the hottest temperatures, with at least 43ºC in the shade by midday in land-locked provinces such as Córdoba, Jaén and Sevilla.

Policemen trebling speed limit to reach crime scene quickly face suspension

Two National Police officers could be suspended for up to three years without pay after being caught on camera driving at three times the speed limit. They were reportedly on their way to separate urgent call-outs when a speed camera snapped them travelling at 150 kilometres per hour in a 50-kilometre limit on a road in Zaragoza. Authorities say at least 20 cases of police cars breaking the speed limit by a considerable margin on the Z-30 have been filmed on the hidden radar, and offending officers all said they were on their way to solve crimes. But the last two officers are considered to have committed such a grave offence that they face between five days and three years of their employment and salary being suspended. One was on his way to deal with a knife attack, and succeeded in getting there in time to stop the aggressor from causing any serious injuries.

The other was attending a call from a bus driver over a violent incident among a group of young people on board a coach. A union spokesman for the policemen in question says they are not, by nature, ‘dangerous drivers’, and that the road had four lanes in each direction, no pedestrian crossings, and that the incident was between 02.00hrs and 03.00hrs when there were no cars on the road. He says police need to be allowed to do their job and that if in their professional judgment they decide it is a case that needs urgent attendance, particularly where it could be a life-or-death situation, adhering to speed limits or other traffic controls may be more likely to cause fatalities due to the delay in handling the crime in question. Local Police officers in Zaragoza have archived the case against the offending officers, including their fines, but they are likely to face in-house disciplinary action from their superiors.

And the mercury will rise to at least 40ºC in the Ebro valley, the south and south-east, both inland and in coastal areas. Colder regions of Spain including Galicia, Asturias and the north-west of Castilla y León, which tend to see more of a ‘British summer’, will experience highs of at least 38ºC in the shade, AEMET warns. The mainland will be most affected, although the Canaries and Balearics could also see a significant rise in temperatures. AEMET sources say the rising thermometers will be caused by a wave of hot air coming over from Africa. This means the risk of forest fires in rural areas is heightened and residents are warned not to hold barbecues outside if they are near trees or scrubland, not to throw lighted cigarette butts out of windows or flick hot ash – smokers should open their windows just a crack and use the in-car ashtray – and no glass or plastic bottles should be left in

direct sunlight either in the countryside or in cars. Health authorities recommend staying out of the midday sun, between approximately noon and 15.00hrs, using plenty of suncream, wearing a hat, UV-protective sunglasses and loose clothing, drinking at least two litres of water – as well as sports drinks to replace lost glucose and electrolytes – and those with a pool or near the beach to cool down in the water where they can. Spicy food, alcohol and caffeine should be avoided as they all raise body heat and can cause dehydration. Other suggestions made by native Spaniards and long-term expatriates have included putting bed sheets in a carrier bag in the freezer for two hours before retiring, soaking flannels or hand-towels in water and placing them in the refrigerator or freezer, and splashing cold water on pulse points such as the neck, wrists, behind the knees, and also the back and shoulders.

Djokovic’s dad: “Rafa stopped being friends with Novak when my son started beating him” World tennis number one Novak Djokovic’s father has criticised Spain’s Rafa Nadal, saying: “He and my son were best friends when Rafa was beating him, but it’s a different story now.” Rafa, however, denies this and says he and the Serb remain great buddies and that if there was ‘a problem’ between them, they would ‘call each other and talk about it’. Srdjan Djokovic, whose son Novak is currently at the top of the global ATP rankings, says Mallorca-born Rafa ‘was Novak’s ‘best friend while he was beating him’, but adds: “When things changed, they were no longer friends. That’s not sportsmanship.” Srdjan also took a swipe at former ATP number one, Switzerland’s Roger Federer, during his interview with Serbian newspaper Kurir: “His talent as a tennis-player does not coincide with his qualities as a human being. He might still be the best player in history, but as a person, he is completely the opposite,” says Mr Djokovic senior, adding that the Swiss star ‘attacked’ Novak during the Davis Cup in Geneva since Federer ‘understood that he was the successor and attempted to discredit Novak in any way he could’. “Novak’s success is something extraordinary, and it’s something that some of the others cannot understand,” lamented Srdjan.

But he was quick to praise his son’s sportsmanship with his fellow players. “There’s no other sportsman who treats his rivals so well, whether he wins or loses – Novak is the only one who does this, both in his sport and in his private life,” Srdjan insists. Spectators of the epic Wimbledon final this year, which saw Scotsman Andy Murray become the first Brit to win since 1977 and the first UK citizen to win the men’s title in 77 years, were sceptical of this when the Serb exhausted his quota of objections within a very short time – and then still tried to carry on objecting – but their faith in Djokovic’s sportsmanship was restored when his speech at the end was televised and his delight for Murray was very clear and genuine. And Novak’s father admits his son has a good relationship with the Scot, whom he calls a ‘true example of sporting nature’ and a person who ‘is a good loser and a good winner’. “Obviously, they cannot be the best of friends because they are fighting for the most important trophies and, at the end of the day, an awful lot of money. But they are very correct in their behaviour as rivals and I’m sure that once their careers are over, they will be great friends,” Srdjan stated.

THE LEGEND LIVES ON

Hard to believe, but 16th August this year will mark 36 years since the untimely death of Elvis Presley. Elvis, was truly the King of Rock n’ Roll. Some may argue the point, but ask any number of artists, both of yesteryear and modern day, and they will tell you that without Elvis they would not have had a career. Sure, there were many talented artists around; Bill Haley introduced rock ‘n’ roll; but a middle-aged man with a kiss-curl on his forehead was never going to be a role model for the youth. It was Elvis’ good looks, animal magnetism, and rockabilly music that caught the attention of the white, record-buying youth.

Rockabilly fused together the genres of black music, country and rock ‘n’ roll, and with Elvis’ unique delivery, a new musical era was born. And, as they say, the rest is history. To mark the life and music of Elvis, ‘Quesada Spiritualist Church’ have organised a celebratory night at ‘El Alto La Dolores Restaurant’ on Friday, 16th August. The night will include film extracts, rare footage and music of ‘The King’. There will also be an Elvis quiz, and Martin Dean, of Nova Radio, will be performing his tribute to the King. ‘El Alto La Dolores’ has recently hosted two sell-out rock ‘n’ roll nights, and this is guaranteed to be another great success. So book early to avoid disappointment. Tickets at just 10 euros, which includes a BBQ meal, are available from the Restaurant, The Post Room Benijofar and The Card Place Benimar, or by calling the Hotline on 965 323 028

‘The Story So Far...’

Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre Foundation DVD now available

Hot of the press this DVD tells the fascinating story from the start of the centre right up to it’s achievements to date. Professionally filmed and narrated by Viva TV, the film shows how the rescue centre was born after Sue and Rod Weeding were shown an injured horse that was being kept in the most appalling conditions. The professionals who are on hand to look after and treat the horses are featured including the vet, dentist and farrier and their importance in the successful running of the operation is highlighted. The filming of some of the rescues that have taken place over the last 5 years and the conditions in which these animals were found makes for some very emotional viewing. The main aim of the EHCRC is to rescue, rehabilitate and provide a sanctuary for life for equines in distress. The rehabilitation process has proven not to be as straightforward as originally thought and Sue describes the trials and tribulations that she and Rod have gone through and continue to do so to ensure the safety and

good health of the 50 plus equines at the centre. Most importantly the future of the centre is key and Sue explains how giving the centre foundation status, appointing trustees, and involving and educating young people will ensure that the organisation will expand and flourish. Open days are very important to show the public what goes on at the centre, questions are asked and answered and the popular tours of the facility are shown on the film. Finally the volunteers who are an essential part of the operation are shown going about their daily tasks with enthusiasm and a genuine love of these beautiful creatures. The DVD’s are available for 7 Euro’s each in all the EHCRC charity shops located in Ciudad Quesada, Guardamar, Los Montesinos, La Zenia and San Louis Urbanisation near Torrevieja. And of course at the centre every Sunday during the open days. It really is a cracking 35 minutes of entertainment and a fascinating insight into what goes on in this popular venue here on the Costa Blanca. Why not come and meet all of our residents? We are open to the public every Sunday 13:00-17:00. Free entry. Tasty hot food, cakes, teas and refreshments are available. Also our very popular horse tours. We also have Merchandise and souvenirs. MAYOR RAMIREZ REFUSES TO COME CLEAN ABOUT THE ARENA ROCK CONCERT IN SAN FULGENCIO

Mayor Carlos Ramirez Sansano has stated that he will not answer questions put to him by opposition councillors with reference to the Rock Arena concert until November 15, 2013, four months after the actual event, once again demonstrating a total lack of openness and transparency. Both opposition parties believe that he is responsible for serious irregularities regarding the organisation of the Rock Arena concert held on 12 & 13 July this year in La Marina urbanisation, they have requested copies of official documents regarding the legal status of the organiser of the concert, if the relative permits were obtained and the security and control of access to the concert which was supposed to be a ticket only event. The Mayor has refused to provide this information to the opposition parties. Opposition councillors from Independent party APSFU, which includes English councillor Mark Lewis, and the national Socialist party PSOE, which includes English councillor Brian Deacon, suspect

that the mayor has used the council coffers to underwrite numerous expenses incurred in the organizing of the concert, whilst, at the same time, maintaining a public stance that the concert would not incur expenditure from municipal funds. Both during and after the concert there were many complaints from local residents; concert goers consuming alcohol in the streets, clashes with local residents, concert publicity posters on lampposts, litter in the streets and in the marketplace on La Marina urbanisation which is still there to this day causing damage to the environment and deprecating the area. All this present a very negative image of the municipality of San Fulgencio and the urbanisations. APSFU opposition councillor Mark Lewis stated “On behalf of local citizens, particularly those living in the urbanisations, we will pursue this matter until the full and true facts are revealed”. From the opposition councillors San Fulgencio

Madrid Arena Trial Update

‘Suffocating’ policeman says hall ‘full of minors’; reveller says victims left unattended as medic ‘talked on the phone’

A police officer on duty at the tragic Hallowe’en party in Madrid Arena last year where five girls died in a crush says there were ‘lots of minors’ in the building. The unnamed witness, aged 24, said he felt ‘considerably older’ than most of the revellers at the party and that la huge number of them were well under the age of 18, the minimum required to enter. In fact, witnesses aged 16 have been questioned already, and they are not thought to be the youngest allowed in that night. The National Police officer confirmed security was poor and the maximum legal capacity of the venue was exceeded by far. Investigations show that the number of people let into the Madrid Arena that night was at least twice and possibly nearly three times the number that the building was designed to hold. When the officer entered via the ramp at the emergency exit, he immediately felt ‘breathless’ as though he were ‘drowning’, and had to escape for his own safety through the only way out of the main dance hall – into the

corridor.

vain.

It was in the corridor that the crush occurred which killed 18-year-olds Rocío Oña, Cristina Arce and Katia Esteban, and 17-year-old Belén Langdon, (all four pictured below) as well as leaving María Teresa Alonso, 20, in a deep coma from which she never awoke.

Another witness – a young man who attended the party and was caught in the crush as revellers tried to enter the dance hall when popular DJ Steve Aoki began his performance, said he began to perform CPR on one of the unconscious girls – given that he is a lifeguard by trade and has first-aid training - but that a man in a ‘fluorescent yellow jacket’ ordered him to stop and took the girl to the medical room.

“I was on the point of collapsing, or being knocked over, several times because of the sheer volume of people there,” the officer told magistrates. He and a colleague rushed to the aid of those who had lost consciousness and took over from a third officer who was performing CPR on one of the girls who later died, although it has not been confirmed which. The policeman said he guessed ‘about five people’ would have been killed, but was ‘amazed’ that there were not ‘plenty more’, because ‘the situation was out of control’. Abdón Núñez, solicitor for the family of Belén Langdon, praised the officer for his ‘invaluable work’ in attempting to save the life of one of the victims, even though this turned out to be in

Here, only one doctor was on duty, Simón Viñals, and the three girls whose hearts and breathing had stopped were ‘waiting their turn’ to be resuscitated. The same young man said he say the girls lying in the room unattended while the doctor was talking on his mobile phone. If a person ceases to breath and has no heartbeat, they need to be resuscitated in under eight minutes to avoid irreparable and possibly serious brain-damage – and where they are not brought round in under half an hour, their chances of survival are practically nil.

Santiago rail tragedy:

Con artist tries to pass for boyfriend of victim in order to claim compensation

A heartless fraudster has been arrested after attempting to pass as the partner of one of the victims of the Galicia rail crash in which 78 people have lost their lives in order to claim the compensation due to the injured and family members of those who died. The accused, identified only by his initials of R.R.R., tried to claim the deceased victim was pregnant by him, and that she had not been formally identified. He was detained when parts of his statement about the woman in question did not add up. The suspect is said to have four other arrests to his name in relation to fraud and theft. Authorities have set up a hall with the personal effects of the victims – both those who lost their lives on Tuesday evening when the Madrid-Ferrol train derailed just outside Santiago de Compostela, and those who are injured and in critical conditions – so that their relatives can reclaim them. The financial cost to the rail board and the State is likely to run into multi-millions since all those on board the train, and the next of kin of the deceased will be entitled to compensation. Fears are afoot that foreign investment in Spain’s highspeed AVE network – the largest of which comes from Brazil – could now be in jeopardy. But AVE bosses are quick to point out that the accident was not on the high-speed line, rather on the regional network, since the Alvia trains cover both and these are via the same tracks.

Worst forest fire in Mallorca since 1999 sees two towns evacuated

Mallorca’s worst forest fire in 14 years is still burning near Andratx and has already wiped out 1,600 hectares since Friday. Homes in Estellencs, near Andratx were due to be evacuated last night (Saturday) and 40 fire engines, four helicopters and about another 20 hydroplanes were working round the clock with 186 members of rescue forces including forestry brigades, the Civil Protection squad and the fire brigade. In total, 325 people have been drafted in to help, but they are working in shifts with a minimum of 186 on duty at any one time. The number of planes and helicopters being used is partly due to the fact that the site of the fire is very difficult to reach on foot. Homes in Andratx itself have already been evacuated, but have not as yet suffered any

fire damage. Although authorities were not expecting residents in neighbouring Estellencs to have to flee their houses, they have decided to order them to do so as a precaution. Whilst the blaze continues to rage out of control, emergency services are working hard on containing it and are quietly confident of being able to have it within clear boundaries and stopping it spreading by later today. The MA-10 road has been cordoned off, mainly because the wire netting on the rock-face at the sides of the road to prevent crumbling have melted away as a result of the blaze, meaning the safety of drivers cannot be guaranteed. Fire-fighters have come from as far afield as Cuenca, in Castilla-La Mancha and Soria, in Castilla y León in the north-west of the mainland to help out, as have the armed forces from Bétera (Valencia).

Health checks to save hundreds of lives

Hundreds of lives could be saved by health checks, UK health secretary Jeremy Hunt claimed this week while promoting the NHS Health Check programme. The programme aims to screen everyone in England between the age of 40 and 74 who has not already been diagnosed with heart disease, stroke, diabetes, kidney disease or certain types of dementia every five years. It is believed that checking blood pressure, cholesterol,

weight and lifestyle alone could dramatically cut rates of diabetes and heart disease. Costa Blanca GP Dr NajmaHussain, from Medcare, welcomed the move and urged everyone eligible to take advantage of the programme. “Wellperson health checks are the best way to prevent disease and to make early, possibly life-saving diagnoses,” she said. Medcare has long promoted regular health checks and

The years heat really hit suddenly and much later this year. As I write this we are on our 4th day of hazy cloud (and even two showers) – I am sure I have not seen in JULY before – but it’s still HOT! The garden , even with the rain and our “free” well water looks its usual struggling July / August way – like us all the plants would love a break from the heat ! However the terrapins seem to love stretching out in the full sun ……… Our neighbour, Antonio, continues to cultivate our lower land – using our water ! – But supplying us with a constant stream of fresh cut vegetables – no problem with our 5 a day this year ! - His onions are magnificent ! TV NEWS ……… firstly just a quick extension of lasts months feature on the demise of xxxx.terra.es emails. Our old address – rainbowsats@terra.es – no longer functions – use rainbowsats@ gmail.com ……….. but what I didn’t say was that lots of you who had the newsletter email delivered did not get it because your @terra.es does not work and we had 25 or so returned undeliverable - so if you had an @terra.es address and have changed then let us know the new address so we can start resending you the newsletter and anyone else who wants to subscribe just let us know. The big TV news is the possible , and I repeat possible , problems coming up with the BBC, ITV and some “4” channels ALL other channels will not be affected. The launch of the new “E” satellite, for these channels , due for 16th July, has been postponed as the Russians had yet another rocket catastrophe ……..complete burn up soon after launch - watch it at http://www. youtube.com/watch?v=ZWv4ZZArP-g – quite spectacular except for the local Article sponsored by RAINBOW SATELLITES – the company for ALL your TV needs in the Murcia Region. Contact Alan or Matt for any advice / information on all things television / radio. Email rainbowsats@gmail.com or call (0034) 686 358 475 ……… look at www.rainbowsats.org for some good basic advise and back copies of the newsletter

town sprayed with poisonous fuel. Now the Russians are saying – just a few days after the crash – that there were some sensors mounted upside down !? – but general consensus is that they could not know that so quick and the story is just to try to regain confidence in the launches …… whatever the next launches are sure to be delayed and thus our possible problems delayed. I will repeat last months statement that NO ONE knows the final outcome of these changes on us down here so don’t get talked into spending money on some system upgrade that may not be necessary or may not be adequate. If the very worst did happen and those channels were just not available on satellite systems then there is always internet TV but you must have an excellent internet connection to watch a satisfactory picture. If you are getting internet installed a precautionary step you could take is asking your provider “will this connection support live internet TV ?” Good internet TV is available , with some great features but the internet connection must be A1 with no download limits. Most systems say a 2MB connection is required but its not just about speed but also consistency - a recent client had a 3MB connection – verified on www. speedtest.net – with decent “ping” and “jitter” (line quality measurements) but the internet TV was hopeless and could not be resolved………. Beware ! New comers to Murcia Region and buying property – check to ensure UK TV will be available there by some method – so many buy then ask us to install UK TV – and there is no where for a dish and no decent internet available - just get us to survey before you finally buy.......

Pedestrians face breathalysing if they flout traffic laws Pedestrians who breach road rules will be tested for alcohol and drug consumption – even where they are not victims of, and have not caused, an accident.

‘Road rules’ for pedestrians that qualify for breathalysing if flouted have not been defined, but walking down the middle of a busy road or in front of a moving car could be triggers for testing if the person is caught. According to a report by ThinkSpain, this is part of a road traffic law reform, which also makes driving under the influence of drugs a criminal offence and requires under18s to wear cycle helmets when on their bikes in town. The legal alcohol limit will remain at 0.25 milligrams per litre of air when breathalysed, falling to 0.15 milligrams for

“English spoken”

new drivers and those in charge of commercial vehicles.

But driving under the influence of drugs is charged on a zero-tolerance basis, meaning there is no lower limit – the slightest trace of any form of illegal drugs, including those erroneously considered ‘harmless’ such as cannabis, will result in a fine at the very least. Fines for drunk-driving or ‘drug-driving’ start at 1,000 euros, rather than the previous figure of 500 euros. Whilst cyclists under 18 must now wear a helmet when riding on urban roads, the law remains the same for adult bikers, although a further debate will be held in the autumn amid countrywide protests by regular cyclists and towns which run on-street bike-hire schemes.

Deborah Cubel fisher

Child restraint systems including booster seats are also regulated by the new law and their requirement is based upon height rather than age, meaning they are now essential for all children of 135cm (4’6”) and under.

Speed-camera detectors remain illegal, as do speedcamera inhibitors which prevent these from detecting vehicles which have them installed. The law reform text includes future speed regulation which will soon be open to debate and includes the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT)’s wish to increase limits on certain stretches of motorways to 130 kilometres per hour and reduce limits on B-roads and certain streets in towns and cities.

Q . Is this the right time to purchase in Spain?

A. This is not a legal query, but we frequently receive e-mails with precisely this question. Nobody has the magic ball to know for certain what will happen in the next year or two, but their is no doubt that their are extremely good opportunities and that it is presently a buyers market. Their are definitely many more transactions happening this year in Almería compared to last year . Those who where waiting to purchase have realised that they cannot wait fore ever and the sellers have reduced their price expectations in line with the market. The bank are also offering properties at greatly reduced prices, with generous finance if you purchase one of their properties. The market though is full of disparity regarding prices. In the same estate agent´s windows you will find properties with prices more appropriate for 2007 then 2013, and yet in the same window you will find a property priced by a motivated seller at a reduction of 50% on the 2007 prices. As long as you have the patience and are prepared to put some work into the property hunt I would say that is is an excellent time to purchase a property in Almeria

El Palmar, Valencia 4th August e m o h e h t ~ ~ a l l e a P of

What are the various types of paella available in Spain?

These are the varieties of paella you are likely to encounter in a restaurant in Spain. In addition to the ingredients below (and, of course, the rice), the paella will include vegetables - often peppers, tomatoes and green & white beans. Paella Valenciana ~ The original paella and is made from chicken, pork and/or rabbit. There’s not a prawn in sight. Paella Marisco ~ Seafood paella ~ The fact that paella valenciana came first is not to say the seafood version is not ‘authentic’, just don’t be forcing yourself into eating it out of some appeal to ‘tradition’. Will usually contain prawns, mussels and calamares (squid). Paella Mixta ~ To get the best of both worlds, try the mixta, which is a mixture of meat and seafood.

Valencia, unsurprisingly, is the best place to go for paella; it is almost a self-fulfilling prophecy – as more people come to the city to eat authentic paella, the more restaurants open up.

Paella Vegetal or Vegetariana ~ Spanish cuisine has broken from its typical mentality by providing a vegetarian paella as well!

DIGITAL

Paella Negra ~ Seafood paella cooked in squid ink.

... made easy

Paella Fideus ~ Paella made with noodles instead of rice.

The History of Paella

According to The Paella Company, paella was originally a labourers’ meal, cooked over an open fire in the fields and eaten directly from the pan using wooden spoons. Seafood is rare in the fields of Valencia, which is why they used chicken, rabbit, duck and snails; snails were the most commonly used meat as they were cheap. For special occasions rabbit or duck would be added and the well-off would have chicken. Anyone that tries to tell you that the original paella was a seafood dish is wrong.

Paella Today...

Paella is still a popular dish today. Despite tourists’ desire to get a well-made fresh paella and their willingness to pay over the odds for it, one of the appeals of paella to the Spanish is that it can be cooked in large quantities and will still taste good later that day or even the next day, which is a good thing as making paella is a laborious task. Making large quantities saves time later. It is popular in restaurants as it can be served all day and is popular with restaurant clientele as they can have ‘instant’ paella without the hassle of making it themselves. In Valencia things are a little different - there, making paella is a part of local pride and every mother claims to make the best paella in the land! Restaurants in the Valencia region are therefore aimed at tourists as the locals make it at home (don’t assume that because a restaurant is full of the Spanish that it isn’t touristy - the Spanish travel extensively in their own country - an Andalusian in Valencia is still a tourist). Communal paella cooking and even paella competitions are common in village festivals, especially in the Valencia region.

The pals’ most recent get together happened last month when Rishia demonstrated just what a cheeky monkey he is by spitting water at Emily during a swimming session. It is thought that the pair have developed a special friendship due to the fact they met so young - forming a bond similar to that of brother and sister. However, as the pair grow up their friendship naturally has to change. Rishi is developing at a much quicker pace then Emily and is already strong enough to pick up a fullygrown human. RED SAILS IN THE SUNSET Armed with international credentials a local company is positioning itself to make Torrevieja the preferred option for Russia’s sailing enthusiasts. Serenity Sailing School’s owners, Richard and Anna Plaster, will visit St. Petersburg early in October. There they will introduce Torrevieja International Marina as an opportunity to take up sailing as a recreational sport. Their eleven Royal Yachting Association (RYA) accredited courses begin at novice level to Yachtmaster. They also cover related subjects such as Powerboat, VHF Radio, Day Skipper and Yacht Master theory courses. Anna says, “We are well equipped for Russian speaking students including teenagers. It is important that their certification is internationally recognised.”

Serenity Sailing, based at Torrevieja International Marina, believes that there is no reason why recreational sailing on the Costa Blanca should not be as popular as is golf in the region. She adds, “We are actively engaging with Russian sailing schools and lifestyle media. Torrevieja is perfectly placed to become a recognised base for the Russian Federation’s sailing enthusiasts. We now have a dedicated Russian desk with Russianspeaking liaison staff.” For Further Information or Photographs: Richard Plaster. CAMPO LIFE WITH JENNI....... Last week we discovered more about the Black Iberian Pig, native to Spain from which the world famous ham is derived from, but what I did not know, that attributing to its amazing flavour, is the fact that Iberian pigs produce oleic acid, which is similar to that found in olive oil. No other animal in the world does this. This gives pork products made from the animal a more intense taste.” They also feed exclusively on ‘belottas’ between November and March which again contributes to the unique flavour. But what of the trees that these produce these acorns? The evergreen Holm oak (Quercus ilex) and Cork oak (Quercus suber) which make up the vast expanses of the dehesas. First up is the he Holm Oak or Holly Oak is a large evergreen oak native to the Mediterranean region. It takes its name from holm, an ancient name for holly. as it’s leaves are a similar shape and are as prickly as hell. It is known as encina in Spanish and was first introduced to the United Kingdom in the 16th century. The first trees to be planted from acorns in the United Kingdom are still to be found growing within the stately grounds of Mamhead Park, Devon. Thanks to the presence of tannic acid, which naturally preserves the wood, the holm oak has a long history of practical use and the Romans are known to have used the wood for making the wheels of carts and carriages as well as in numerous agricultural tools. The ancient Greeks also held the Holm oak in high regard, although more for symbolic reasons than practical ones. The leaves of the tree were thought to be infallible and were used to tell the future. The acorn was seen as a sign of fertility and wearing jewellery such as pendants and necklaces with imitation acorns was believed to increase the chances of being fertile Amongst it attributes, and one of the most interesting and valuable, is the fact, that it is one of the top three trees used in the establishment of truffle orchards or truffieres. These Truffles (fungi) grow in an ectomycorrhizal association with the tree’s roots. This means that they steal the carbohydrates and nutrients that they need from the host plant. It makes me wonder therefore that the sublime taste of the jamon from the Iberian Pig,

I have always wondered why pigs were used and how they would be able to sniff them out and that is because, as always it comes down to SEX!!i Researchers in West Germany have found that truffles contain large quantities of a substance also synthesized in the testes of boars. In the boars it is secreted into their saliva when they court females. The Germans report that the substance’s musklike scent, ‘’emanating from the saliva foam, is smelled by the sow and prompts her standing reflex.’’ The chemical is twice as abundant in truffles as in the blood plasma of boars, so it makes sense why female pigs are used for truffle hunting. The truffles tested were black varieties, Perigord, considered the best by many connoisseurs, and the same variety which are found in Spain. Furthermore, experiments at the University of Birmingham in England indicate that this substance, is produced in the testes of human males and secreted by their armpit sweat glands. It can also be detected in the urine of women and has been proved to have a psychological effect on human beings. The tested subjects were exposed to the smell and then asked to grade the photographed women for sexual attractiveness. Those who had sniffed the substance gave higher grades than did the others. Aah! This now answers another of my questions why people would go such lengths to eat this fungi and at great expense. It is considered the worlds most expensive food. These ‘black diamonds’ are also definitely an aphrodisiac. So for a romantic night in, toss out the oysters, and if you can’t afford a truffle that costs between ‚¬200 and 600 per kilogram - Have a plate of celery and parsnips as the steroid is also synthesized in small quantities in these vegetables. Growing truffles commercially is difficult since they develop underground and very slowly, but science has found a way and more importantly here in Spain there is a very good reason why planting a truffle orchard might be your way to make a fortune and that is because here in the Valencian region we fall within the Geographical Location. Black truffles are found naturally in the wild in Europe between the latitudes 40N to the 47N. Which corresponds basically from Valencia, Spain to Paris, France. What more can I say??? Get planting today, and just what to do, will all be revealed next week! Until then, you can enlighten your visitors of all the interesting facts, about your Spanish General Knowledge gleaned from this and previous articles but failing that, you could bring them up to Casa La Pedrera, for a fabulous day out. Our fun activities includes quads, horses, archery, air rifle and kayaking, or simply take a refreshing dip in our pools which can be used for half price when booking any of the above. The craft shop is still open and finally don’t miss out on the opportunity to celebrate more of some great Spanish Traditions, at our Horse and Flamenco Show on Wednesday the 7th & 21st August which fuses the flair of flamenco dancing with the passion and strength of horses. It is a fantastic show for all ages and tickets are only 10 euros for adults and 5 for children. Until next week why not pop some celery or parsnips in your basket when you are next shopping, I know I will be tempted will you? Jenni

Pension entitlement overhaul

could mean part-timers no longer have to work twice as many years as full-time employees

The Secretary of State for Social Security Tomás Burgos says part-time workers should not have to be ‘paying into the system’ for as long as fulltime employees to qualify for a State pension. At present, to be eligible for any type of retirement pension, a person needs to show they have been on the Social Security system – either as a employee on a contract, as a registered self-employed worker, signed on with the dole office, on maternity leave or a State sick pension – for 15 years. They then have to be in this situation for a minimum of 30 years – soon to rise to 35 years – to qualify for a full pension based upon their earnings over their working lives. As contributions are based upon a 40-hour working week, this is then calculated on a pro-rata basis for those working part-time, meaning that a person who has always worked 20 hours a week will need to be paying into the system for 30 years to get a pension and 60 to 70 to get a full one, whilst people who have been working for 10 hours a week all their lives need to be ‘in the system’ for 60 years to receive anything and between 120 and 140 years to qualify for the full amount. With the financial crisis and the unemployment toll, jobs tend to be seasonal – during the tourist season – and are more likely to be part-time. Many women’s associations say this scheme amounts to gender discrimination since, in past decades, children were nearly always cared for by their mothers, who could only work part-time as a result, and even today, 55 per cent of parents who work reduced hours in order to bear the lion’s share of childcare are mothers rather than fathers. Burgos says that with the pension reform, which tightens up eligibility, at least 40 per cent of the current working-age generation would be unable to receive anything at all when they retire – even were it not for the fact that 27 per cent, or six million, were currently out of a job. He has proposed that parttime workers only need to show seven-and-a-half years of Social Security contributions to qualify for a retirement pension – which effectively means they have worked 20 hours a week for 15 years, but will show up on their records as seven-and-a-half years ‘in the pot’ for their pension fund – and that the number of years is reduced on a pro-rata basis according to average number of hours worked. It would mean that those who were working for an average of 10 hours a week would, after 15 years, have a total of three years and nine months on their records, which Burgos says should be treated in the same way as if they had worked a 40hour week for 15 years. He has presented this proposal to the Toledo Pact in Parliamentary Congress. Recently, the court declared that the current method of calculating pension entitlement based upon hours worked, leaving part-timers having to work for more than the average human lifetime before they were able to retire, was unconstitutional. This verdict by the Constitutional Court was partly based upon the fact that it was mainly women who would be without a pension since, although childcare is becoming a role split equally between genders, just 10 years ago two-thirds of mothers were the main carers and therefore part-time workers – compared to 55 per cent of them as at the end of 2012.

COMMUNITY NEWS THE HELP ASSOCIATION OF VEGA BAJA

Dear Editor

Through your Readers Page, I would like to thank Woody, for the excellent entertainment he provided for our final meeting of the Social Group Friends Unlimited at The Club in Quesada, before the long summer break. I would also like to thank the staff at The Club, for providing the lovely variety of crudities and dips they kindly arranged for us. To all those who attended the afternoon in their bright and colourful outfits and for assisting in raising over 200€, making it a true ‘rainbows end’. HELP is committed to helping in the Vega Baja area, food parcels to the less fortunate, school books for the underprivileged children and amongst other things assistance to other charities in a practical way. We also provide a free service of the visit of a Welfare Officer in vulnerable persons own home, to see what can be done to make their life easier. We also like to look after our members, by providing various benefits, when hospitalisation occurs and when times are hard, or when they need an Interpreter. Max is a handsome 18 month old male cat, who like many others in APAH’s Cattery has spent his whole life so far in APAH’s care. Many of them have never had the opportunity of a loving home. To give Max and many others like him a chance at family life, please contact Yvonne on 630 422 563. Tyler and his brother Kingsley were found running around the back roads near the APAH kennels. The two young puppies were pitifully thin and very nervous, but they are putting on weight now and gaining in confidence. They will be medium sized dogs when fully grown. To arrange to meet Bubba, Tyler and Kingsley or any other APAH dog or cat, please contact Yvonne on 630 422 563.

viewpoint

I suppose it was ever so – each technological leap forward, from the wheel through to the Large Hadron Collider has been met with derision and suspicion. All through the ages people have asked ‘What you doing?’ The response has been ‘I’m inventing something that is going to change our way of life.’ The askers then hung about for a bit, to see if the invention would explode in an interesting manner, and if it didn’t, they would shake their heads, go ‘Tut-tut’ in a patronising tone of voice, and sagely say ‘It’ll never work.’ Ultimately, many inventions did work, and did change our way of life, though the Large Hadron Collider has as yet had no impact at all on the daily life of Limaria. However, each massive technological leap forward has also had a wobble factor, a tiny glitch that makes it not quite 100% perfect. Take the wheel, for instance; Stone Age Man quickly learnt to team his new invention with a brake (probably after a downhill trial run, when his wife’s cousin’s aunt didn’t dodge quickly enough). Had he at the same time invented an Impact Avoidance System, then the wheel would have been perfect, as would the condition of his wife’s cousin’s aunt. In 1837 Charles Babbage pulled together various ideas and came up with the first digital computer, patted himself on the back and said ‘There you go!’ In 1842 Ada Lovelace decided that the computer was a dumb old thing, simply sitting there humming and whirring, and so she set about programming it, and unwittingly created a real-life Frankenstein’s Monster. She gave it a brain, but it never occurred to her to give it a conscience as well. So computers got cleverer and cleverer, until in no time at all they were cleverer than a sizeable chunk of the human population. This is where things started to go wrong. The computers got too big for their boot, and no longer regarded themselves as servants. They became elitist, bossy, and at times downright awkward, just because they could. My laptop is elitist, bossy, and at times downright awkward. However, I wish to gently point out to it that it lives in MY house and is fed on electricity paid for by ME. Furthermore, I would like to softly remind it that I have the ability to pull its Life Support (plug) out whenever I feel like it. So, dearest laptop, be good. Know your place – or else! Oh Ada, if only you could have foreseen how dangerous intelligence is without integrity!

Distant Names to Conjure With

Like most Brits, we watched last week’s events concerning the royal baby, with interest at first; followed by the desire to get it over with and finally, approaching physical pain through the sheer reporting overkill of the whole thing, the longing to see an end to it all. The day before the birth we were subjected to a Sky news reporter spending a whole twenty minutes telling us that there was no news from inside the hospital. Even Kate Burley, who tried to intercede on several occasions, just could not shut the pillock up. But I’m a Royalist at heart and happy for the parents who seem to be a nice young couple regardless of their elevated status that goes along with being members of the British aristocracy. But as I write, the talk is what the little bloke will be called, with bets flying around on the likely outcome, and as expected, most of the favourites feature typical regal handles like George, Alexander and Henry. I wish they would call him Leroy or Cyril, just to throw an almighty spanner in the works.

Anyway, one thing I have always found interesting about the whole affair, is the fact that Kate and her family come from the Berkshire village of Bucklebury, and many years ago one of our irregular drinking haunts was at The Old Boot Inn just a couple of miles down the road in Stanford Dingley. So when that familiar old hostelry was flashed on the screen yesterday, I jumped up excitedly and shouted: “There it is – The Old Boot!” Well my wife, who was in the kitchen at the time, mis-heard me and came storming in brandishing a wicked looking tomato. “What did you call me?” she challenged. “No, not YOU old boot!” I assured her. “But look, that’s one of the pubs where we used to drink.” “From what I’ve heard, you must have drunk in practically all of them”, she countered before turning on her heel and returning to whatever it was that she was doing. Her remarks really cut deep at times. In fairness, it wasn’t an establishment that we used on a frequent basis, but was one of a number that we occasionally travelled to purely to get out of town and try something different. The White Lion at Hartley Wintney; The Shoulder of Mutton in Hazeley Heath - where I later held my stag party; The Highwayman in Woodcote and Danny La Rue’s pub By Colin Bird : badbirdnow@gmail.com

-The Swan in Goring-on-Thames were other country pubs that we had discovered and used when the mood took us and we felt like a drive out on a summer’s evening. I had come across the Old Boot whilst travelling to and from a job I had been working on at one of the substantial properties at Bucklebury, and I remember part of our conversation at the bar the first time we partook of the inn’s hospitality. It was my mate Ray who asked: “So how did you find this place then?” “I was doing a job down the road”, I told him. “A new roof on a six car garage.” “Six cars!” Ray was impressed. “Yes and you should see the house”, I said. Ray didn’t want to know about the house; it was the cars that fascinated him. “So what are the six cars?” He asked. “They don’t have six cars, just two.” “So what’s the point of having a six car garage then”, he queried. Well, I didn’t know did I, but he wasn’t going to let it go. “How much did you charge them for the roof?” “Just over two hundred quid”, I told him (a lot of money in those days). “So they spent two hundred notes on a six car garage that only has two cars in it”, he came back. “That’s about it.” We took a long swig of our beers. “What are the two motors then?” Ray wanted to know. “A Bentley and some sporty softtop job with the name of some insect or other.” I told him. “That would be a Beetle then!” Was Ray’s brilliant deduction. It was Alan, the third member of our party who spoke next.

alqueria - The Grand Heist

The folk of Alqueria looked in horror at the forlorn spectacle that was once their homes. Broken glass, torn bedding and doors swinging off their hinges, the looting of Alqueria had been complete. The poor had been separated from their valuables quicker and more completely than even a Tory chancellor could manage. Loco Paco, the only Alquerian not at the picnic and therefore present when the thieves arrived could shed little light on the matter. It appears he was taking his pet Saharan Dung Beetle, ‘Benjy’ for a walk when they turned-up. Thinking they were on the lookout for unlicensed Scarabs he and his precious beetle went into hiding. He watched as the thieves loaded their fleet of trucks with the portable and semi-portable goods and chattels of the villagers. When asked why he didn’t raise the alarm he muttered some gibberish about the licensing requirements of the species Scarabaeidae. The Spanish guards on the Alquerian border were of no help either. In fact they seemed to be suffering from a form of selective blindness which appeared proportional to their sudden affluence. The heist bore all the hallmarks of Medioladrillo Cid and his gang from Madrid. These unprincipled villains make a habit of plundering small villages while their inhabitants are otherwise engaged. They were also under suspicion of being involved in the Great Merluza Theft of 93. As the people of Alqueria slept on bare stone floors or rather bare marble floors in the case of the Hill People discussions took place on what should be done. Jóse Cabrasilbido, the local policeman was out of his depth. The idea of asking the Spanish National Police to help was mooted. Manuela however was against the suggestion. She was convinced that the last time they were in Alqueria the photographs they took of her were not for training purposes. Free of their worldly possessions the people of Alqueria knew an equality and comradeship never experienced before. It should have been a golden time of reconciliation and understanding. Unfortunately it was such an alien feeling it worried and confused them. Perhaps they weren’t ready for such a heady ideal. It simply made them more determined to regain their wealth and plans were laid to that end. The ‘Fondo de Ayuda por Alqueria’, was put in place. There was a problem though. If everyone in the village was broke who would donate, but wise fiscal policy has never been a feature of the Alquerian establishment. Manuela and Poyato had another plan. Commandeering several vehicles they drove into Spain and proceeded to loot the village of Pobreville. The population of Pobreville were enjoying their annual Merienda de Campo some kilometres distant. The status quo was therefore restored and the population of Alqueria could continue their interminable squabbles.

“Probably an Alpha Spider.” He notified us. “That’s it.” I confirmed and Ray nodded sagely. Another swig. “They would have done better to have had a bit of the roof done and left the rest till later.” Ray was like a dog worrying a bone. “They probably would have if they were

skint and didn’t mind getting their power boat flooded every time it rained.” I announced. “Boat!” Now he was seriously impressed. “Another round lads?” I suggested, before further interrogation commenced. It’s funny how one word – Bucklebury on this occasion - can conjure up such vivid memories from the past.

braben’s blog...

So, with the arrival of summer and the prospect of a little overheating, may I commend a Japanese innovation, one which, okay isn’t for everyone, but nevertheless is worth uncovering, a bra with built in ice packs. Yes they’ve really bounced ideas around and come up with something that will keep you cool, well will keep half of the population cool anyway and although I won’t be wearing one anytime soon, no matter how hot it may get, some of those Japanese Sumo wrestling guys could do with them I think! But that doesn’t take away from the fact that innovations such as the ice bra show that there are times when we can do extraordinarily intelligent things. Unfortunately we don’t always cover ourselves with glory and there are times when it’s difficult to distinguish between the intelligence of some individuals and that, say, of a small bar of Dairy Milk chocolate. A chap in America, who was certainly old enough to know much better, lost his temper and attacked his father with the birthday cake the elderly parent had baked. Maybe a drop too much of birthday water had gone to his head but really, how can we invent frozen bras on the one hand and attack a loved one with a birthday cake on the other. I only hope it wasn’t the sort with that hard icing, you know, the stuff you can use to hammer nails into concrete, or there may well have been some nasty injuries suffered, similar to something that can be inflicted by those pointy bits on a Toblerone. Then to prove, if further proof were needed, that many of us shouldn’t be trusted out of the sight of a sensible adult a story surfaced from Graham is married France which makes you wonder if there are enough sensible adults to to Helen and has a daughter, Alice. go round! Bristol couple hold wedding reception at McDonald’s

A couple who found love beneath the Golden Arches have toasted their wedding with milkshakes and Coke in a fast-food feast at McDonald’s. The Mirror reports that Steven and Emily Asher paid £150 to feed 33 guests at Bristol’s Cribbs Causeway restaurant. On the “the happiest day of our lives” they arrived in a stretched limo before the 28-year-old groom washed down a Chicken

Legend meal with a strawberry milkshake. Emily, 21, had a Coke with her Chicken McNuggets meal. Steven, who proposed after a string of burger-based dates, said: “It was a great day and everyone seemed to find our reception at McDonald’s really interesting. “Everyone enjoyed themselves - everyone loves McDonald’s, don’t they?”

Princess plate gamble backfires A Dorset firm has lost out after acting little boy, the small family business was on an “inside tip” and producing 5,000 commemorative plates celebrating the arrival of a ‘Royal Princess’. The unnamed company supposedly had a tip-off from a royal insider that the Duchess of Cambridge was set to give birth to a girl. With complete confidence in their inside man, they designed plates with the message: “To celebrate the birth of the Royal Princess.” So, when the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge announced they had had a

left with thousands of pounds of worthless merchandise on their hands. The entire stock was snapped up by www. wholesaleclearance.co.uk which is selling the souvenir plates in stacks of 50 for £149, or £2.98 each. They have even suggested possible uses for the pieces of ‘inaccurate history’ including ‘waiting for baby number two and selling them for a profit’, ‘having a plate smashing contest’ and to ‘give to your colleagues as the worst secret Santa present ever’.

Thunderbird Part 4 – Local folders and filtering - the final battle! Local folders? What are they and what possible use can they be to you? First, What are they? As simplistic as it seems, the folders are created and stored on your machine instead of being on the web under the protection (control?) of some ‘faceless’ operator. What is the benefit of this? The first benefit is that you can back them up safely to an external drive for the ‘Just in Case’ scenario. Should the computers holding this information, on the internet, ‘crash’, then your information would be lost, if only for a few days, while they get another computer running and restore the yesterday’s backed up copy. Second benefit? You can access them any time, night or day, with or without an internet connection. Drawbacks! If you don’t regularly back them up and your computer does go ‘belly up’ then you will have lost them. The upside is that they should still be on your email provider’s computer and can then be restored to you just as soon as your computer is working again. Now that you know what folders are, it is now time to create a couple with you. We all have, at time, trouble with the law, whether we are at fault or not! So, let us create a folder and call it ‘legal’. Go to the point where is says ‘Local Folders’ on the left hand side of the window and right click over it. You will get a drop down menu with option 4 being ‘New Folder’. Click on that and window will ask for the name of the folder. As suggested, type in ‘Legal’ and click on the button marked ‘Create’. A new folder called ‘legal’ is now at the bottom of the list waiting to be filled. The simplest way to add something to your new folder is to go to your ‘Inbox’, click on, and hold, a message and then drag it to the new folder. It has now been moved to a more organised place. Well done! Lets try something a little more automated. Filtering is the action of automatically moving emails from the ‘Inbox’ to somewhere else by following simple rules. The way to start creating these rules is to go to the menu bar, click on ‘Tools’ and then, about half way down is the option ‘Message Filters’, how surprising is that? You will have to create a filter name. Choose one that seems to fit the task, such as ‘Legal Documents’. The next text box has a default option of ‘Check mail or manually run’, I would leave that one and move down the rules proper. If you are going to have only one rule (name of sender OR specific legal phrase OR subject heading) then leave the default setting of ‘match all of the following’. Only change it if you have several rules and ALL must be moved to your folder. So you have mail from ‘Rumpold’ of the Bailey and want to automatically store it in your new folder. In the main window is a drop down box with the highlighted option subject. Change this to ‘From’. In the next box leave the default option as ‘Contains’ and in the final box put the email address of ‘Rumpold’ and then move to bottom window where it wants to know where you want it to go. The first Drop down box asks what action is to be taken. Click on it and look at what options you have available. The default one is usually the best! Finally, the second drop down box asks where the action sends the mail to. Here you find and select the folder ‘Legal Documents’, press the ok button and you’re done. Do that with all categories of emails and very soon you will be the envy of everyone who is disorganised :-) and with that your simple tutorial is complete. I haven’t a clue as to the next subject but know that someone will tell me what to do! For further information or advice on computing, contact Trevor on 689 892 745 or canducomputing@hotmail.co.uk

CHRYSLER GRAND VOYAGER The word ‘grand’ is slowly creeping into motoring parlance. Only recently I tested the Chrysler Grand Voyager, which was certainly a large and capable people mover. So now I find myself confronted by another big vehicle, this time in the guise of the Suzuki Grand Vitara. It’s not as cumbersome as the Chrysler but the Japanese manufacturer uses the adjective to distinguish this large five-door model from the smaller three-door. Now that I have two little daughters each with bulky car seats such sizeable vehicles have become increasingly appealing. Inside the Vitara there is plenty

of room and the black leather interior is stylish and robust, like the vehicle in general. With its burgundy finish and distinctive chrome Suzuki logo on the grille it is certainly eyecatching as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz. Dubbed a ‘soft roader’ Suzuki first introduced its rugged Grand Vitara in 1988, when I was still at school. Twenty-five years on and there are a plethora of 4x4s to choose from manufacturers that once shied away from this marketplace such as BMW, no doubt swayed by Suzuki’s success. And so it is somewhat gratifying to note that Suzuki has stuck to its guns with the

model name and not decided to replace it or radically change the vehicle. Externally this third generation model doesn’t really seem to have changed much at all although perhaps looking slightly bulkier and modern; testament to a strong design in the first place. I wonder did Land Rover draw inspiration from this model for its Freelander? There do seem to be similarities in its styling. The last time I drove a Grand Vitara it was fitted with a punchy but quite thirsty petrol engine. This time I am presented with a more frugal diesel unit. A decade ago it was hard to find a Suzuki with a diesel engine but

now they are readily available across the whole range. The manufacturer claims that the 1.9 litre diesel unit fitted to this vehicle returns almost 40mpg and that it travels almost 400 miles on a tank. A journey to Brighton allows me to put it through its paces and it proves to be a competent motorway cruiser with very little buffeting despite relatively high winds. The steering wheel mounted cruise control is easy to operate. In these days of six and seven speed gearboxes it is quite surprising to only have a five-speed manual but this low ratio version enables it to be far more productive off road,

FC TORREVIEJA –THE PRE-SEASON BUILD UP CONTINUES The revolving door continues to turn. One of the recent new recruits, centre-back Rodri has failed to turn up for training so his contract has been rescinded. Midfielders Pastor from Almoradi CF and Luichi from Crevillente have been signed and what is the best news of the week for me is that one of our best players from last season, central defender Rafa has re-signed. Last Sunday Torry played their first pre-season friendly on a balmy summers evening at the Nelson Mandela against Segunda B side Elche Ilicitano. The gate was a healthy 300+. Both sides had plenty of

players in their squads with both dug-outs over-crowded with Torry having a large number of young trialist’s hoping to get on and make an impression.

Torrevieja: Carrion (Carlos 45 ‘), Vicente Boix (Pau 78’), Maxi, Dani Meseguer (Rafa Flores 71 ‘), Eloy (Paul 45’), Hamza (Fredrik 45 ‘), Pastor (Guillem 45’) (Javi 86 ‘), Alberto (Alfonso 45’), Micro (Juanma 68 ‘), Carrasco (Burguillos 18’) (Mati 83 ‘) and Gasch (Ibrahimovic – a darker version – must have had his name changed or adopted the name of his favourite player ??? 63’).

many clear-cut chances with both keepers being for the most part inactive. For Torry a well flighted free-kick from Dani Meseguer just evaded the head of the Torry central defender Maxi and forced the Elche keeper to make a good save. The deadlock was broken in the final minute of injury time when a corner from Elche was headed onto the bar and the rebound struck high into the back of the net. There were plenty of changes at half-time and during the second-half as the Managers gave players a run out and a chance to show their worth.

The game was a by en large a pretty even contest with neither side carving out

The result of friendlies really doesn’t matter except of course if your team

get a real stuffing. Torry competed well against a side that have had greater physical preparation thus far with the seasoned players who have been retained from last season in good shape and standing out for Torry, Captain for the day Gasch, Dani Meseguer and Vicente. Returning player to Torry Carrasco limped off after 15 minutes with a pull/ strain. Burguillos replaced him and did o.k. Returning player Micro showed a bit of quality in patches and new signing Pastor, who huffed and puffed a bit down the right, looked promising until he was replaced at the break. The no. 22 Maxi did well in central defence. He is a big powerfully built lad

specification 2012 onwards New price range:£15,995 - £23,875 Used price range: £3,742 - £17,854 Facts at a glance: 0-60mph: 12.8secs Top speed: 106mph Economy: 37mpg Power: 127bhp Watch the video at www.testdrives.biz when required. This becomes useful when my oldest daughter suddenly alerts us to the fact that she wants to go to the toilet. We happen to be passing a field and the gate is open so no better time to do a spot of off-roading and find a suitable venue. At one point on our journey it becomes necessary to reverse into a tight driveway and down a sharp incline. It proves relatively straightforward to conduct this awkward manoeuvre in the Suzuki. The boot is large enough for the tandem pushchair and on our return from Brighton it transports a rocking horse

with ease. Rather than lifting upwards, the boot lid opens like a traditional car door, which is generally helpful unless you park by the side of a road and another driver follows behind you. When daughter Harriett decides to mess about while daddy is driving and try her hand at opening the electric windows in the rear, it is helpful to be able to lock them at the touch of a switch from the front. All in all the practical Grand Vitara should score highly with families who demand more than just an average estate car.

with an imposing presence. Guillem who operated down the right channel in the second-half showed a turn of pace. Young Paul Mahoney who was at the club the season before last came on at left-back in the second-half and impressed with a few no-nonsense robusttackles. Rafa and the little terrier Manu Amores didn’t feature. I would certainly expect Rafa to occupy one of the 2 central defensive positions when the season gets underway. Early days but encouraging as the Manager decides on his final squad. Personally I still feel that Torry need to bring in at least 4 or 5 “new” faces with Regional Prefente or Tercera experience

with the priority being to find a couple of decent strikers which is of course easier said than done but is nevertheless a definite requirement.

LO CRISPIN GOLF SOCIETY Peraleja Golf Club - 24.07.13 With bags overflowing with food and fluids, 39 members and guests set off this sultry morning to try and get the better of the Seve designed course at Peraleja, Murcia. The day proved too warm for some players but everyone soldiered on and were glad to finish. We started from the 1st and 10th tees and as Hello

everyone knows who have played there, not the easiest of holes, with water coming into play on both. We didn’t have a draw for the most lost balls, but looking about the course there were plenty of people searching in the water, or maybe they were just cooling off their feet. Seriously though, apart for the usual few sandy fairways

in the Gold Division and it was Brian Staines who took 4th spot with 32 points, Paula Hagart figuring in the prizes again, claiming 3rd spot with 34 points, one behind the runner up Bill Starkey. Top slot in the Gold went to Richard “Hippy, hippy shake shake” Wale with an impressive 38 points.

TMGS TMGS Match Report – Villamartin, 24th July 2013 The sun was shining with a vengeance and it was a hot old day out there on the course at Villamartin and of which it must be said, the course is looking quite good and continuing to improve with the work they are doing. Some revelled in the heat and some faded away and it was the old boys in the Silver Division that fought out the top two slots and for the second week running,

it was George Smith who took the winners rostrum with an excellent 40 points and a certain cutting to his handicap. The runner –up slot went to another ‘old timer’ in the form of Peter (I want to play off of the blues because I can’t hit the fairways from the yellows) “The Don” Mason with 36 points. 3rd and 4th spots went to the Norwegians of Roger Nilsen who edged out Per Skarnes for 3rd place on a 34 point countback. Similar scores were needed

The four NTP’s were claimed by Arne Hansson, Les Wilton, Mick Kennedy and Alan Rixson and the Best Visitor on the Day was I Smith with 35 points. The photo is of our Gold Category winners. Our next game, Wednesday 31st July 2013, see’s us at the “marmite” of golf courses, Las Ramblas in a Texas Scramble, so if you fancy a game just look at our website www.tmgs.org or call the Match Secretary on 661 524 101 We also run small matches on Friday’s and if you fancy a fun knock around, contact Steve Higgins on 968 978 188.

Wednesday 24th July 2013 After 17 of today’s 24 players decided to descend upon the Sportsman Bar bright and early for a hearty breakfast we set off on our journey to Alenda Golf. All players started from the 10th Tee and with hot temperatures forecast the golf bags where filled to the brim with liquids of the rehydration type. Although some golfers chose to fill their bags with extra supplies of golf balls !!!! Spanish !!!!! The course was in excellent condition with manicured fairways and slick greens, it sure provided a test for the best. The scoring was a little on the low side (maybe the heat got to some players or even the pressures of individual duels ???? ) After the round all 24 players returned to the Sportsman Bar, Quesada where Ron & Yo served a salad which

was devoured in minutes an excellent feast on a hot day, thank you. We then carried out our presentation with prizes donated from Sportsman Bar (NTP wine) meal vouchers from the Quesada Fish & Chip as well as meal vouchers from Mancinis Restaurant, Rojales. (in association with Costa Blanca Green Fee Services) at Roda 25th July 2013.

SMGS at LA FINCA Already branded as Mad dogs and Englishmen from the words of a well-known saying, members of San Miguel Golf Society and a few guests prepared to do Stableford battle with their tee-off times running up until noon on a very hot Wednesday! The comforting words from the marshal who reminded us that the trade-mark “La Finca breeze” would get up around 1 o’clock didn’t cut a lot of ice at the time he mentioned it but, sure enough, right on cue about 4 holes into our round the breeze coming across from the coast was most welcome. From a personal point of view, a couple of duff connections down the first fairway found me still twenty or so metres short of the green after four shots. “Pull yourself together….it’s just an up and down for 2 points….” I

told myself as I surveyed one heck of a tight lie. Bosh! It was one of those delicate chip-shots that was hit a tad thin and never got off the ground….but luckily the direction was blob on! It smacked the flag about 50 mph and disappeared down the hole like a rat up a drainpipe! Somehow as your 5 for 3 is recorded, you just get that feeling - this could be a good day. Ivan Hanak, Mary Cleary and Gordon Wilson all won sleeves of balls as NTP prizes on holes 6,13 & 16, with nobody from the silver division managing to cling on to the tricky 3rd green. The guest prize went to David Bryant who carded a very healthy 37 points. Silver category winners were “in-form” Derek Johnston in 3rd with 34 points, Ray Ewins in 2nd with 36 and 1st place went to Chris Hamblett

Bull Flanagan Golf Society Bull Flanagan Golf Society held their July meeting on the 26th at Bonalba Club near Alicante. The course was in excellent condition at this favourite golfing venue. Scores were not as high as expected and not only the course beat most members but the very hot humid weather took its toll on the back nine as exhaustion tended to take over. Best score of the day went to Bill Fantom with 31 points, in second place

a further point behind was Brian Ead and in third place using his much lower new handicap was Phil Harris a further point behind.Winner of the best front nine was John Rawlings and best back nine went to Chris Smith.
