festival of the Carthagineses y Romanos a success Last weekend’s Festival of the Carthagineses y Romanos was as usual a full weekend of entertainment and colourful spectacle. A concert, a craft market, a test of archery, a contest of ballads, beverage tasting and a three act drama had all been set up by the Fundación de Quart Hadast. The goal is to fill in the time between the three scenarios of the drama as they unfold. These, which use the same script as always, cover the invasion of Iberia, which is staged in the Auditorio Portátil del Muelle; the wars led by Asdrúbal, in the Plaza de Juan XXIII; and the founding of the City, in the Parque de Los Juncos.

Sport

The Banda de Música de Molinos Marfagones opened the festivities, playing on a stage outside the gates of the Palacio Consistorial. The Auditorio Portátil next to Héroes de Cavite has been enlarged with two extra tiers to seat 2,300 people, who can enjoy the show with the Muelle de Cartagena as scenic background. Before the arrival of the Carthaginians, the centre of the Plaza Juan XXIII was the venue for demonstrations of pottery and clay moulding and blacksmiths crafts. Youngsters were encouraged to give these skills a try, and the Tropa de Himilcón held an archery workshop. In the Parque de Los Juncos a ballad display, supported by the Asociación José María Marín, was held. This was also the venue for the tasting of traditional drinks from old times, such as mead and mulled wine – though for the less adventurous there was beer! Hannibal’s triumphant march through the city was as usual a noisy and colourful affair! Apart from the main event of the day, there were many well-supported opportunities to partake in physical activity. In the morning there was a swim across the Dársena de Cartagena, and later in the day hundreds took part in a mass Zumba in the Campamento Festero, and was a benefit event for the Fundación Soy. Less physically demanding was the Torneo Internacional de Ajedrez, (International Chess Competition) the third and fourth rounds of which were staged in the Hotel Alfonso XIII. Dozens of horse-drawn carriages formed a procession from the Campamento to the port, which was followed by a display of skill. The Festival was brought to a close with a demonstration entitled ‘flash move’ next to the Campamento. The night continued with music and merrymaking until shortly before dawn. laverdad.es

motcrcyclist dies after colliding with bus

A motorcyclist has died after colliding with a bus on the road between Ramonete and Águilas. The accident took place at 11 am, according to sources at the Centro de Coordinación de Emergencias, and the motorcycle rider was pronounced dead at the scene. laverdad.es

pedestrianisation of Avenida Alfonso X

The possible pedestrianisation of Avenida Alfonso X, a long held plan by the Ayuntamiento, which had been shelved a decade ago following opposition mainly by traders, is still unable to achieve unanimous support. While most of the hoteliers and owners of bars, cafes and terraces in the area believe the initiative would encourage trade, with customers enjoying a more relaxed atmosphere, there are traders who still fear that the centre of the city would ‘die’ if people were unable to drive into the City. The trend in most major Spanish and European cities to pedestrianise City Centers and the recent success of the Avenida de la Libertad, which is now traffic-free, has encouraged the Equipo de Gobierno (Government Team), whose leader is Alcalde Miguel Ángel Cámara, to put the project to pedestrianise the Avenida de Alfonso X back on the table. Miguel Ángel Cámara stated that the project could not be carried out immediately, because the funding is not available, but that upon completion it would create a pedestrian walkway of more than 800 metres, from the Plaza Circular to the Glorieta . Many citizens currently enjoy walking in the middle of the road without fear of being hit by traffic on the walk from the Plaza Circular to the Catedral, at times when the Avenida Alfonso X is closed to traffic for certain events - Día del Caballo, Bando de la Huerta, Pasacalles de los Sardineros. However, some of the area’s residents, whose cars are garaged in the area, complain of the difficulties of access which would be caused by pedestrianisation. Opposition has also been voiced by parents of children who attend the Colegio Jesús María, who at the moment double park ‘for moments’ while waiting to collect their children. laverdad.es

Policía Locale facing suspension after taking unauthorised absences

31 officers of the Policía Locale are facing suspension for up to six years for taking unauthorised absences from work during the festivities. They will testify before a Commission set up to investigate whether an infraction has been committed. The Sindicatos (Unions) claim that the Alcaldía had given justification for the absences, which took place between 17 and 26 May, during the Fiesta period. The bulk of absences allegedly occurred during the first weekend of celebrations, on 18 and 19 May, when 40 officers were supposed to be on duty, but, according to the Alcaldía, ‘33 of them did not report for duty, or reported in sick.’ As a result the Comisaría de la Policía Nacional de Alcantarilla had to call for reinforcements from the Jefatura Superior de Murcia, a move which could have serious consequences for the Policía Locale’s record. A document presented by Alfonso García and Bartolomé Mayol, respectively Deputy Inspector and Oficial of the Policía Local, to the Alcaldía, called for disciplinary proceedings to be opened against the officers for the very serious disciplinary offense of unjustified refusal to fulfil a mandatory service. The document outlines that ‘the absence of these officers meant that other officers had to deal with an increased workload, which caused a corresponding decrease in effectiveness. Some areas were covered by only one officer, thus certain duties had to be neglected to the detriment of residents and visitors.’ According to the Ley de Coordinación de Policías Locales, if the officers are found guilty of a very serious offense, they could be demoted and suspended for between three to six years. The case is ongoing. laverdad.es

Lift for Lorca Castilo

The Lorca Castillo will have a lift included for pedestrian access. Alcalde Jódar has put forward a 3 year development plan for the total renovation of the Barrios Altos, subject to agreement between the Consejería de Obras Públicas and the Ayuntamiento. He has plans for the construction of a road and roundabout that will connect San Juan and La Viña, with a roundabout on the Carretera de La Parroquia at La Velica, which will also provide more convenient access to Castillo. There will also be a Plan Especial de Protección del Recinto Histórico (Pepri) to include these neighbourhoods and the Castillo. There are also plans to improve access for pedestrians to the Alcazaba. The old urban road near the access to the Castillo by the Puerta del Refugio, which was used for many years until it was shut off will be studied for the possibility of installing a lift similar to that in the Castillo de Águilas, that enables pedestrians easier access to the Recinto Amurallado.

wrong way collision

A man has died following a collision with a woman who was driving the wrong way along the RM15. The accident occurred at Baños de Mula, Caravaca. According to sources at the Centro de Coordinación de Emergencias the woman was driving in the opposite direction to the traffic flow. The accident occurred about 9.00 am, and left the driver of the people carrier, who was driving in the correct direction, dead. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle. In the other vehicle, the two occupants, a man and a woman, were seriously injured and were taken to the Hospital Universitario Virgen de la Arrixaca. The woman, who was driving, had to be cut free from the vehicle by the Bomberos of the Consorcio de Extincion de Incendios y Salvamento (CEIS) del Parque de Mula. laverdad.es Sol Times would like to retract the letter regarding Mr & Mrs King published in last weeks issue and wish to apologise for any detriment that may have been imposed upon their business by the publishing of said letter and personal details as well as misleading or incorrect information therein contained

youths arrested for selling drugs

The Guardia Civil have arrested three youths, residents of Bullas, for selling drugs in the leisure areas of the town. Two distribution points for different types of drugs were dismantled, and the officers confiscated 250 doses of cocaine, 179 grams of hashish, seven plants and 72 grams of marijuana, cash, an alarm pistol and tools for handling and distributing the drugs. Surveillance of the suspects allowed the officers to obtain conclusive evidence of drug related crimes, as well as the location of the property where the illegal substances were prepared. Once all the necessary evidence had been collected, a search warrant was issued for a house in the town. The officers ascertained that two of the detainees distributed illicit substances from the property, which received a high number of visits from regular users of drugs. The officers established that the third suspect was selling drugs in the entertainment areas of Bullas, and had also purchased large quantities of cocaine, with which he was returning to his home for preparation. The officers established a tracking device that led to the arrest of this individual and the seizure of his recently acquired quantity of cocaine. laverdad.es

Audiencia opposes demolition of an legal house

An Audiencia (Court Hearing) opposes the demolition of an illegal house. The prosecutor asked that the house, built on non-urbanisable land, be demolished, claiming that the gravity of the offence could not be covered by a fine. The Court considered that there was no justification to define the case as a ‘significant impairment of the natural environment.’ The Sección Tercera de la Audiencia Provincial de Murcia has dismissed the appeal filed by the prosecutor, who had requested to order the demolition of the illegal construction. The case dates from June 2009, when the Servicio de Inspección Urbanística del Ayuntamiento de Murcia found that two women - mother and daughter - had built a house on non-urbanisable land. The house has a ground plan of 60 square metres and is within a fenced plot of 190 metres. The sentence passed by the Juzgado de lo Penal Número 5 de Murcia was for six months in jail and a fine for 12 months at a daily fee of two euros, for separate crimes against planning. The decision was appealed by the Representante del Ministerio Público, but the appeal was unsuccessful. In reaching this latest decision, the Tribunal said that even though the Ayuntamiento understood that the facts were of a significant gravity, there will be no agreement to demolish. The house is the domicile or residence of the accused, and it has not been shown that there is ‘a significant risk to a natural, scenic, special protection, or any other important facet of the legally protected status.’ laverdad.es

The existing projector will have to be “Mothballed”, with a new digital machine being required, at a cost in the region of 40,000 euro. To buy this new technology, Diego is floating the idea that cinema enthusiasts might become “Subscribers”, to the cinema, in order to cover the cost of the equipment, costs that Diego is unable to cover himself. Are there perhaps cinema aficionados in the local area, who would be prepared to part with 139 euro each, to cover the cost of the digital projector, along with a regular supply of films? A “Subscriber” would be entitled to free visits, twice a week, for a year, to the cinema, along with 20% off bar goods in the cantina. There would be no charge to children, accompanied by the “Subscriber”. After the first year, “Subscribers” would pay a reduced entrance fee of 4 euro, and will continue to enjoy 20% off a tipple in the bar. The “Subscriber” fee could be paid in two, yearly instalments. The cinema is looking for some 500 “Subscribers” The intention is to show Spanish and English films, being perhaps 6 months after “Official” release date. Tish Hirst, would be interested to hear readers views on these thoughts to bring cinema back to Pilar. Tish can be reached on e-mail: lah.hh29@gmail. com Have, I wonder, approaches been made to film production companies in “The States” to fund this equipment at Pilar? After all, without the “Houses of Projection”, where would they be? It only takes a letter. Just a thought.

ROGUES THEY ARE ABOUT!

PARAMOUNT PICTURES FOR PILAR, BUT AT A PRICE.

Senor Diego reports that at long last, after many hours of hard work, and with a limited cash budget, the cinema, much loved, and missed by many people within the town of Pilar De La Horadada, and the surrounding area, is approaching the “Grand” re-opening, but not just a cinema anymore. The roof has been repaired, the auditorium repainted, and the new stage, installed by the good folk of the Campoverde Theatre Group, will now be show and choir friendly. The “Silver screen” has be re-furbished, with the sound system now in perfect condition. Diego tells me the bar area is much larger than before, and is more attractive, although there is no mention of the demonic “Popping” corn machine!

Diego does have a bit of a problem in the projection room! The film distribution companies have now advised that they now only stock digital, and cannot (Or will not), supply 35 mil. format films.

What is a little concerning, is that these callers, in some cases, are aware that you may be switching from one supplier to another, and to do so, you need to sign this paperwork. No you don’t! It is thought that these callers may be freelance Iberdrola “Agents”, as they have access to client records, aware that you are with Iberdrola, or another free market provider. If you wish to check the identity of these callers, ask to call the telephone number on their paperwork. If it’s a mobile number, you know they are not what they purport to be. Should Iberdrola wish to visit your home, contact will be made first, by telephone, to arrange an appointment. My advice is to ignore these people completely. You have been warned!

Iberdrola, the electric supply company, tell me that they have been made aware, by their customers, of people “Door stepping” purporting to be employed by Iberdrola, calling with the intention to persuade home owners to sign up for additional “Services” from this company.

Sharon Chambers and Colin Thackwell need to be congratulated having completed a 160 kms SPONSORED CYCLE RIDE in order to fundraise for FAST (First Aid Support Team) Camposol. The idea came originally from Sharon, wife of Robert (Chippy) Chambers, a FAST Responder. She then roped in Colin to cycle as partners. They carried out static cycling each Friday morning for four consecutive weeks riding for two hours each time where they also raised money in addition to collecting sponsors for their forthcoming ride. Colin and Sharon also arranged an interview with Peter Lilley at COSTA CALIDA RADIO which made very interesting listening, hearing about their cycling interests and personal lives. On the morning of Wednesday 18th September and still fairly dark, Carol and Trevor of TJs Bar had kindly opened up (even though it was their day off) especially for this Event. They were ready and waiting outside before 7.00 a.m.! To the noise of the loud hooter and cheering the Cycle Ride commenced! Before Chippy and Nurse Gladys had managed to get into the car which was to follow the riders, a phone call came through that Colin’s bike had a puncture only 5 mins away! The riders were at the first roundabout- yards from Sector B! Chippy and Nurse Gladys from FAST were quickly away to the scene with the Red FAST Bag of Spare Parts to treat the bike! The atmosphere was exciting with people constantly asking for news and questions of how the pair were doing. Even holidaymakers joined in with their support. When news came through that they were minutes away from completing the first 80 kms and would soon be arriving for the scheduled pit-stop the excitement and noise rapidly grew! Seeing them appear and looking

good too was great! Colin and Sharon were pleased that their pace and timing had gone according to plan, together with pretty high temperatures too. After eating their necessary food snacks they were again waved and cheered off to ride another 80 kms. They were feeling the heat somewhat and also felt pretty sore and achey! Two cyclists, namely Jan Verbeeck and Ivo Serdons, living on Camposol (originally from Belgium) had joined the ride, not fundraising but for their own experience and completed 80 kms. Many emotions were experienced on receiving the awaited phone call to say that their return was imminent! Then to see them ride in together at the end was such a thrill it was quite emotional! Everyone was relieved they had arrived back safe and sound! What a wonderful noise of cheering, balloons and banners greeted them with hugs and kisses all round! Colin is happy for people to know he is 72 years old though I have also heard he is 73. Amazing man whichever age he is! Lots of laughter was heard when Chippy and Nurse Gladys told us that their car had been stopped by the police minutes after the start of the journey. But never fear when they are near…. they can always be relied on – soon driving off again after the quick investigation- to the waves and smiles from the Police this time! We hope they didn’t get a ticket for going too slow when following the cyclists! Thanks to everyone who gave their support, donations and help in every way and a very special thank you to Sharon and Colin who had the idea, stamina and determination to carry out this Event fundraising for FAST. Money is still coming in but an estimated amount could reach :- €1,100

Health ministry launches patient card recognised all over Spain to replace regional-only model

A healthcare card which will be recognised in all federal regions in Spain will be launched on Friday, says the PP government. According to a report by ThinkSpain, at present, all those entitled to State medical assistance hold a SIP card, but the individual format of each one is only valid in the patient’s autonomous region – such as Andalucía, Murcia, the Comunidad Valenciana, and so on. This can cause problems if a resident is on holiday or travelling on business to another part of Spain, since their medical data cannot be called up using their existing SIP card. And those who are ‘resident’ in two different regions, because of owning properties they share their time between equally in each one, or working away during the week and being registered on the census in their place of business and main home, hold two SIP cards, which can cause admin headaches. Health minister Ana Mato plans to create a different type of card which will be useable throughout the mainland and islands and in the two Spanish-owned enclaves on the northern Moroccan coast, Ceuta and Melilla. This means doctors will be able to access medical data for all patients they attend to, even if they are temporary visitors from another region. When announcing this in Parliament, although the opposition raised no objections, they heavily criticised Mato for her restrictions on access to free healthcare. The socialists accused her of ‘medical apartheid’, since non-registered immigrants from outside the EU are unable to be treated. In many cases, this is because their residence card has expired and they are in the process of renewing it, or cannot do so because they have been denied this due to not having work – even where they own property and have immediate family in Spain. And where immigrants enter Spain through the ‘back door’ from third-world countries and slip through the net, they have sometimes been found to be suffering from tropical diseases or highly-contagious conditions such as HIV or tuberculosis, which can be fatal to them and others if not treated. Also, self-employed workers who stop paying their ‘stamp’ due to lack of income are only entitled to free State healthcare for 90 days, after which they must either register on the dole – meaning they are not allowed to earn money from any type of work – or restart their stamp payments. This does not apply where the ex-worker lives with a partner or immediate family member who is still paying into the Social Security system by having a job or being

Animal-lovers Present 85,000 Signatures Against Bull-fighting To Madrid And Brussels

A petition with 85,000 signatures and an open letter addressed to the country’s leaders of the PP and PSOE has been handed in personally in Madrid calling for the abolition of one of the largest and most bloodthirsty bull-fighting exhibitions in Spain. The Toro de la Vega, which took place in the village of Tordesillas (Valladolid province) in central Spain on Tuesday despite over 15,000 people protesting against it in the streets of the capital at the weekend, has been a source of contention with animal-lovers for many years.

self-employed, or in a similarly-recognised situation, such as being on a State retirement or sick pension, maternity leave, or registered as unemployed, since in most cases the ex-worker can register on the Social Security as a dependant of their partner or relative. If a Social Security contributor has children living at home under the age of 26, these are automatically covered by their parents’ Social Security if they do not have a number in their own right. State pensioners from any country are automatically entitled to apply for free healthcare provided they are legally resident in Spain. For those who do not qualify for healthcare, emergencies – which the hospital or health centre may define if borderline – pregnancy, childbirth, or any conditions whatsoever affecting children aged under 18 are automatically covered. EU citizens with Spain as their main residence who have held a ‘green certificate’, or official residence document since April 2012 at the latest are normally entitled to healthcare automatically. Anyone who is not sure whether they qualify can carry out a simple, untraceable check on the Social Security website, or phone or visit their local Social Security office. Note: The information concerning healthcare entitlement has been supplied by the Social Security office in Gandia (Valencia) and is correct at the time of publication

Silvia Barceló, head of the independent Partido Animalista (PACMA), or Pro-Animal Party – which currently does not have any representation in Parliament – says members wished to express their ‘deep disappointment and discontent’ that both of Spain’s main political parties could ‘allow, in the 21st century’, for bulls to be ‘lynched and executed with spears for entertainment purposes’. She called for both the socialists – who are in power in Tordesillas itself – and the PP, in office both in the central government and the regional Parliament of Castilla y León, where Tordesillas is located – to ‘listen to the clamouring of the people’ and review legislation ‘which permits such barbaric actions’. Sra Barceló was accompanied by around 10 other members of PACMA and five dogs on leads between them. She said that although their party ran for elections every four years, they were not connected to any political outfit since ‘even IU [Izquierda Unida, or United Left] supports bulls being killed’. On Monday, two representatives of PACMA travelled to Brussels to hand in a copy of the petition to Martin Schulz, president of the European Parliament. They asked Mr Schulz to ‘appeal to Spain’ for the Toro de la Vega and other bull-fighting to be abolished, since Article 13 of the European Union Treaty ‘recognises animals as sensitive beings and not as mere objects’. PACMA’s weekend protest in Madrid saw them snapping bull-fighting spears in front of the PP and PSOE headquarters.

Spain Arrests Terrorist Recruiter

Eurovegas project “at risk”

Madrid stands to lose out on Eurovegas if the central government doesn’t act quickly to change the anti-smoking laws, regional premier Ignacio González warned last Tuesday. “We run the risk that Eurovegas will be moved to another site,” González told esRadio in an interview. According to a report by El Pais, the Partido Popular premier revealed that PM Mariano Rajoy promised on 2 occasions to push for a relaxation of the smoking regulation after holding meetings with Las Vegas Sands CEO Sheldon Adelson. But so far Rajoy, also of the PP, has not kept to his commitment that the proposal would be ready by September, he said. The sprawling multi-million-euro casino, convention and hotel project, which is to be built in Alcorcón, had been received with much fanfare by the PP regional government when

The

Adelson awarded his latest Las Vegas-themed development to Madrid over Barcelona. Madrid officials believe the project will create some 250,000 jobs over the next decade. But the initial phase of the project has gotten off to a rocky start. The central government has not begun to expropriate the land where Eurovegas will be built and financing has been tight. Last week when asked about the changes to the law, Deputy PM Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría said there “are certain procedures to modifying” legislation that “don’t necessarily have to come from the Cabinet.” “We all have to be aware that this is the most important investment that could be made in Europe in the coming years,” González said. “We have to do all that is possible to ensure that it is built.”

Spain arrested a man in its North African enclave of Ceuta on Monday accused of recruiting fighters for rebel groups in Syria’s civil war, the Interior Ministry said in a statement. Spanish authorities said the man led a group that has sent dozens of people to Syria, including minors, from Ceuta and cities around Morocco. “His name is Yassin Ahmed Laarbi, who was a fugitive and wanted by the High Court for belonging to a terrorist organization,” the statement said. Spain arrested eight members of the group in June in Ceuta. Laarbi eluded

Once a year it’s fun and games in Gandia

Every year Gandia goes a little wild with its Fira i Festes - four days in which many streets and squares are used mainly for fun and games. As always, there will be live music, street theatre, a funfair and many street markets; this year a craft market is added to the mix. An “Artesanía de Autor” craft market in which only goods made by hand by the people on the stalls may be sold. The very first Fira was held in 1310 in honour of what was then their patron saint, the archangel Michael. However, in 1542 Franciscus de Borja was canonised and so the Fira was dedicated to this illustrious citizen of Gandia. That he happened to be the grandson of Pope Alexander VI (Rodrigo Borgia), a member of the celebrated Borgia family that ruled Florence in the 15th century with poison and other devilish tactics, was considered a mere coincidence. All in all, the good burghers of Gandia chose well, for the Fira

still runs after more than 700 years. This year it runs from Friday evening the 27th of September to Monday evening the 30th. In an effort to make the Fira more interesting, Gandia Town Hall has invited Amata, the regional craft association, to set up one of its new “Artesania de Autor” markets. Nowadays a Spanish craft market (Feria de Artesania or Mercado Medieval) is usually little more than a street market in fancy dress selling goods identical to those found in the nearest pound shop, and discerning people have stopped looking for genuine craft work in such settings. These last few years Amata has been working hard to convince a somewhat sceptical public that “Artesania de Autor” really refers to a sort of craft gallery in the street. With goods lovingly made by the people at the stall, made by hand with attention to detail, quality and originality. That is why Amata has registered the phrase “Artesania de Autor” to indicate that on the market the craftsman or woman will be there to show his or her work, and often actually be working. A bookbinder binding his books, a cordwainer working with leather, potters and engravers, silversmiths and weavers, a craftsman who cunningly carves horn and wood. Perhaps they won’t be working all the time, but they have their tools and their aprons with them and can often make small changes or add a name to suit a particular client. This is where you find something original and take back a memory. Besides the craft stalls are other stalls with food made to traditional recipes using traditional methods - cheese, dried fruit, sausages and dried meat, chocolate - and there is the usual tavern to quaff the odd pint or scoff a cut of roast pork. A concert stage will also be set up in the Plaça de l’Escola Pia, the square in which the craft market is held - for live music and other and varied entertainment. Not to mention all that’s going on in the rest of the town. If you fancy a day at the Fira, the easiest way to get there is to park your car somewhere near a train station or bus stop well away from Gandia, board the bus or train and get out at Gandia station, a mere 200 m. from the craft fair (set up just off the Avenida de Alicante). The fair opens Friday at 7:30 and stops when Cinderella has to go home; Saturday, Sunday and Monday it is open from 11 am to 2 pm and from 5pm till midnight except that on Monday it all comes to an end at about 9.30 or 10. If you want to know more, ring 639 979 678 (English spoken) and if you want to see photographs of other markets Amata has run in the past have a look at their web site www.amata.es (also in English, or you can practice your Spanish).

Look Good Feel Great

How a salt jab could be more effective for lower back pain than steroids

A saline injection in the spine could be more effective than steroids for treating lower back pain, a new study has revealed. Spinal pain is a leading cause of disability in the industrialised world and epidural steroid injections the most common nonsurgical treatment - have been the standard treatment for more than 50 years. Yet the alternative spinal injection in the space around the spinal cord may provide better relief than steroids which can have adverse side effects. Steroids raise blood sugar in diabetic back patients, slow the healing of wounds and accelerate bone disease in older women, the Johns Hopkins University study found. ProfessorofAnaesthesiology Steven Cohen at the U.S. university said: ‘Just injecting liquid into the epidural space appears to work. ‘This shows us that most of the relief may not be from the steroid, which everyone worries about.’

The research was prompted when more than 740 people in 20 U.S. states became ill with fungal meningitis and 55 people died after getting epidural injections of contaminated steroids last year. Although better oversight might reduce that risk, patients can only get a limited number of steroid injections each year, even if their pain returns. Spinal pain is a leading cause of disability in the industrialised world and epidural steroid injections the most common nonsurgical treatment - have been the standard treatment for more than 50 years Professor Cohen said it was too soon to recommend that patients stop receiving epidural steroids, but added that their analysis also suggests that smaller steroid doses can be just as beneficial. Fellow researcher Dr Mark Bicket said larger scale studies were needed to determine whether steroid alternatives can be just as helpful for back pain patients. He said: ‘Our evidence does

support the notion that, for now, reducing the amount of steroids for patients at risk may be advisable.’ The review covered medical records of 3,641 patients from 43 studies conducted in October 2012 and compared epidural steroid injections to other sorts of epidural and intramuscular injections. Professor Cohen said the new analysis suggested that decades of mixed results of research on epidural steroid injections may have been due to the use of saline or anaesthetic injections as the comparison ‘placebo’ treatment. He said: ‘It’s likely that those studies were actually comparing two treatments, rather than placebo versus treatment. Researchers may be wasting millions of dollars and precious time on such studies.’ The findings are published in the latest edition of the journal Anaesthesiology.

EU to investigate Gibraltar dispute next week A1 Sky Television Systems PM David Cameron condemned the threat and said Britain was not prepared to discuss Gibraltar’s sovereignty. Opposition parties in Spain and Gibraltar’s Chief Minister Fabian Picardo have accused Spain’s ruling centre-right government of using the conflict to distract voters from the weak economy and a corruption scandal involving senior politicians.

The EU will send a team to investigate the border dispute between Spain and Gibraltar next week, Britain’s Foreign Office said on Tuesday. In a report by Reuters (courtesy of Tumbit.com) officials from the European Commission, the EU’s executive arm, will visit the British overseas territory on September 25 to look into what caused a summer of tension at the frontier that has strained relations between Madrid and London. Spain lays claim to the

territory, which has a population of 30,000, which it ceded to Britain by treaty 300 years ago. The team will “assess the border controls, free movement of people and goods, including fraud and smuggling”, the Foreign Office said, citing an EU document given to its officials in Brussels. They will also check Spanish complaints that Gibraltar impeded its fishing boats by dropping concrete blocks into disputed waters off the territory. Gibraltar said it

had created an artificial reef in the Mediterranean to protect fish stocks. “We welcome this confirmation that a monitoring mission will be sent,” a Foreign Office spokesman said. “We stand ready to offer all necessary support to ensure that the mission can conduct its investigation successfully.” Spain tightened border controls over the summer in retaliation for the reef, causing long tailbacks, and threatened to take further action, including a €50 border levy.

He had a house in Spain worth approx 200000 euro and a bank account in Jersey worth 60000 pounds sterling (approx. 70000 euro). He was a Spanish resident. I am domiciled in the UK. My solicitor in Spain says that I have to pay inheritance tax in Spain on the house in Spain and on the bank account in Jersey, while my accountant in the UK is telling me that he thinks this is incorrect and I should consult another solicitor in Spain. A You need to pay inheritance tax in Spain on the inheritance of the house, but not on the account you have inherited in Jersey. You will need to consult your accountant regarding possible inheritance tax obligations in the UK but in Spain, it is clear that you do not pay inheritance tax on the account in Jersey. The law in Spain is simple: If the heir is a Spanish resident he/she pays inheritance tax on anything he/she receives anywhere in the world, (unless bilateral agreements with the country where the assets are situated say otherwise which is not the case with the UK.). ENJOY YOUR GOLDEN YEARS

B.D. Security

Big enough to cope, small enough to care

GRILLES - GATES - FENCING - Arches

Call for a free quote for all your metalwork and security needs phone david on: 679 360 744 email: davegrilles@hotmail.com

Are your security grills/gates rusty? Do they need a professional facelift so they look like new again?

We take away your existing grills, sandblast them back to bare metal removing all old paint and rust. We then prime and powder coat them to your required colour and taste.

Enjoying the Golden Years: Staying Fit for Life Ah, the Golden Years; that long-awaited time to sit back, relax and enjoy the rest of your life after decades of hard work. Not so fast - it’s also the time during which the natural aging process can wreak havoc on your body. Why? Muscle mass decreases as people age; beginning in the fourth decade of life, adults lose 3-5 percent of muscle mass per decade, and the decline increases to 1-2 percent per year after age 50. Anti-aging metabolic hormones such as growth hormone and testosterone also plummet as we age. These hormones are responsible for building lean muscle and preventing tissue breakdown. Fortunately, we can do something about it: These hormones are primarily increased with regular physical activity. It’s the old adage, “Use it or lose it!” Exercise is of vital importance for older adults. It keeps you strong, helps burn calories and maintain weight, improves flexibility, and contributes to balance and bone strength. What are the best types of exercise? A regimen that builds lean muscle and promotes endurance, flexibility and stability is the goal. Here are six of the most effective exercise options to accomplish this with minimal risk of injury. It is highly recommended that you consult your doctor for a complete physical evaluation prior to starting any new exercise routine.

1. Brisk Walking Walking is a great low-impact form of cardiovascular activity. It improves endurance and lean muscle tone in your legs. The key is to avoid walking too slow; maintain a brisk pace with long strides and arm swings. Adding ankle or wrist weights to enhance aerobic calorie-burning helps send more oxygen to your heart, increasing endurance. Even low- to moderate-intensity walking can have both short- and long-term health benefits. How fast is brisk? Determine your target training heart rate and maintain this pace for at least 30 to 60 minutes, three to four days per week. (For example, a good target heart rate for a 60-64-year-old is 96-120 beats per minute. For more information on target training heart rates by age, read “Find Your Fat-Burning, Muscle-Building Zone” in this issue.) A variety of heart rate watches are available to help track your target heart rate during exercise. Try changing your terrain by walking up hills and stairs for added resistance and difficulty. Better yet, throw on some hiking boots and hit the open wilderness trails and commune with Mother Nature. Just remember not to push too hard or put yourself in a position to fall or otherwise injure yourself.

2. Resistance Training Don’t worry, you won’t end up looking like Arnold Schwarzenegger by doing a little resistance exercise, and it’s important to maintain your existing muscle tone as you age; the most effective way is via strength training. However, instead of using your typical weights and gym equipment, try working out with rubber tubes and bands instead. These give you added resistance in two

directions, making for a more effective workout and much less chance of injury to your joints, ligaments and tendons. There is no need to lift heavy weights to burn calories and increase strength. Just 20 minutes three to four times per week with bands or tubes can make significant changes in how your body looks and feels. Optimum results are obtained with fast-paced, fullbody routines. Again, remember to start slow and talk to your doctor before beginning any new exercise regimen.

3. Yoga Talk about a powerful exercise routine that can add relaxation and fun to your life! There are many videos available on the subject, but I strongly recommend attending a class for beginners or seniors to ensure proper technique. Working with an instructor and a group of like-minded, health-conscious people is a wonderful way to get in shape and expand your social circle at the same time. One of the best health benefits derived from yoga is learning to control your breathing. Breathing from your diaphragm instead of your lungs increases oxygen and blood flow to the cells of your body. The more oxygen you have in your system, the more you increase endurance and longevity. Yoga poses also give your muscles sustained isometric contraction, making them stronger and more resistant to injury.

4. Swimming Regular swimming builds endurance, muscle strength and cardiovascular fitness. Swimming tones your upper and lower body because you’re using almost all of your major muscle groups. There is low risk for swimming injuries because there’s no stress on your bones, joints or connective tissues due to buoyancy, and the fact that you weigh one-tenth less in water. Start slowly; experts recommend that beginner swimmers start with 12-20 minutes of swimming. Once your strokes become more efficient, your ability to swim longer will, too. For exercise purposes, the best stroke to use in the pool is freestyle - move your arms in a windmill motion while your body pivots and you breathe on the side of the arm that’s out of the water. To keep your swimming routine fresh, mix up the freestyle stroke with other strokes and you’ll be working different muscles for a more effective workout every time. Not sure about technique? Take lessons at your local YMCA, YWCA or community center. Detailed descriptions of common swimming strokes (including pictures) are available online through a variety of resources.

5. Bicycling Of course, cycling is a great way to get around town while saving the environment. It’s also a great way to stay healthy. Cycling offers one of the most effective cardiovascular workouts with focus on using your leg muscles, and it’s easy on the joints, unlike running. People who ride regularly have improved aerobic fitness, decreased cardiovascular load and increased use of fats as an energy source during physical activity (rather than being stored). Exercise declines with age, yet cyclists show a smaller decline than those involved in gym activities. Cycling is an activity that you can safely adopt without the risks of more strenuous exercises. A non-sport exercise such as cycling allows year-round participation as part of a daily routine.

Just remember your helmet 6. Active Stretching Yes, stretching can be an effective workout if done correctly. I recommend a technique called active isolated stretching (AIS). Use a strap or rope hooked around your foot to assist with the stretches. This is different than static stretching, where you hold a stretch for 20 -30 seconds. Static stretching actually increases your risk of injury if you perform the moves too aggressively. AIS is performed actively: You move your muscles back and forth in a controlled manner instead of holding them in one position. AIS is based on the principle of reciprocal inhibition, which simply means you contract (shorten) the muscle opposite the muscle you want to stretch. As you contract one muscle, its opposite has to relax due to this reflex. By taking advantage of this reflex, you get a greater stretch than you would otherwise. AIS helps to overcome injuries by balancing muscles, going through all the available motions and decreasing stress on your joints. After a 15-minute session, you will feel dramatic changes in your body. For even more benefit, perform these stretches prior to doing any of the exercises listed above. Well, there you have it: Six fun ways to keep your body lean and healthy no matter your age. What more could you ask for? Take your time and introduce new exercise programs slowly, combining different options for variety. With time, these routines will become easier to perform as the health benefits build exponentially. So get out there and enjoy your Golden Years. With regular, appropriate exercise, you’ll have the time of your life!

The ultimate in concrete design

Talked enough about stone fruit lately so its time to change tack and go back to the pigs! No, actually, we moved on from there and then it was ‘truffle time! Now - how did we get there I wonder? Oh, yes, it was because of the Iberian pigs were eating the Bellota’s - the acorns from the tree, and perhaps sniffed out a truffle or two which led me off in that direction. We also chatted a bit about the encinas - holm-oaks, that the acorns came from, but there is also another kind of oak that is really important and are predominant in the Dehesas. The one which we will be discussing today is the Cork oak (Quercus Suber). I came across this tree when I was choosing some trees for our garden. The Garden Centre that is situated right here, next to us, at La Pedrera, (mainly deals in exporting), told me that it was a very important tree. I did not realise, just how important it was, until today. The industry is worth some 300 million euros to Spain, and Spain is the second largest exporter in the world. Not fruit this time, but cork. Yes, CORK!! Spain has exported cork since the 19th century and each year sells 3 billion corks, making 1.3 billion for sparkling wines and 1.7 billion for ordinary wines. Some even say the cork industry is now worth over two billion euro to the Iberian Penisula because Portugal, the world’s main supplier, crop was devastated in forest fires back in 2003. It was thought that this traditional industry was in decline due to the influx of ‘plastic’ or synthetic corks but science has provided the answer. Sales of Spanish cork plummeted between 2008 and 2010 but now the traditional cork business has recovered, rescued by cutting-edge laboratory researchers who are demonstrating why nature’s stopper may still be one of the best ways of preserving and serving bottled wine.

Now natural wine cork production is back at levels of its best times, a bright spot in a Spanish economy and with the the fruit and vegetable industry posting record export levels it is a good indicator that Spain’s fortunes may just be turning the corner. Spain’s cork-producing regions of Catalonia, Andalucia and Extremadura have set scientists the task of ensuring corks don’t have any infamous “cork taint” - a musty odor caused by the chemical trichloroanisole (TCA). The laboratory tests wine corks and bottles of wine from producers to see which stoppers perform best. It tests whether corks emit smells or contaminating molecules, does a microbiological analysis and also checks out torque and extraction to see how strong the cork is. The result is higher quality corks being used for wine, driving out poor quality offerings. Another reason for the change of fortune for this industry is environmentally aware consumers are also drawn to the fact that growing cork trees helps the planet. Cork oak also provides its ecosystem with several benefits. The trees help prevent soil erosion from wind and water, and increase the absorption rate of rainfall. The cork oak forests of the Mediterranean act as a barrier to the

is also, a renewable resource, since the bark of the tree grows back. It is a green economy: respecting natural regeneration cycles and respecting the ecosystem. Cork can only be cut under licence between June 15 and August 15 of any summer The law prohibits from taking cork off the trees outside this brief period, as it might damage the health of the trees. . Unlike many other oak trees, cork oak is an evergreen and does not drop its leaves. The thick and knobbly dark grey bark which covers it - is the “cork.” A single cork oak, which lives up to 200 years, can be harvested over 16 times. During cork harvest, the tree remains standing while large sections of its outer bark - the cork itself - are cut and peeled from the tree. When the tree reaches 25–30 years of age and about 24in (60 cm) in circumference, the cork can be removed for the first time. However, this first harvest almost always produces poor quality or “male” cork. Subsequent extractions usually occur at intervals of 9 years, though it can take up to 13 for the cork to reach an acceptable size. If the product is of high quality it is known as “gentle” cork, and, ideally, is used to make stoppers for wine and champagne bottles. The workers who specialize in removing the cork are known as extractors. and have to train at college for 2 years before they are even allowed near a tree! More on that next week so when next ‘pop’ that bottle of champagne - you may just wish to ‘propose a toast’ to the ‘extractors’ too! Do I hear you say? .... “Hear, Hear”!!

Cyclogical Many of us have to cycle regularly in the dark due to the hours / shifts that Quesada we work therefore we should also consider purchasing and wearing either a fluorescent harness, armbands or a waistcoat and always remember to carry a strong lock with you and wear your helmet as it’s the law in this part of Spain.(Albeit very ambiguous) So think health and safety and of other road users and be seen.

Cycle Route 30. Cycling round the “The EL-Hondo nature park.

This is a great little ride and suitable for all levels of cyclists including young children. You can either cycle to the nature reserve or you can take your car with the bikes on the back. There are numerous entrances to the park by cycle but if you are going by car you need to drive to Dolores then Catral head for and through San Felipe Neri and about 1km past you will see the sign post for the nature reserve. In some signs it’s spelt El Hondo and others it’s El Fondo. ( There are also some new cycle routes to and from Crevillente from here and are well marked ). Drive along this track and you will arrive in a large car park where you can leave your car and enjoy the miles of beautiful cycle and walking tracks. Just passed the car park there is the park information centre which is always closed when we are their but we have been told in good faith that it is well worth a look. There are walkways and tracks all around the park and they are well signposted. There is also a viewpoint tower to climb up where you can see all the lakes and beautiful wildlife you can also see for miles from here. All around the lake there are information boards with pictures of the various wildlife and plants. If you are cycling to the park you are spoilt for choice of entries. If you cycle towards La Marina from San Fulgencio at the crossroads where right goes to La Marina ( Iceland , Lidl, N332 ) or left takes you to Dolores there are 3 canals turn left at the last one and cycle through the side of the fence and follow the canal all the way crossing over a tarred road on route and this irrigation canal will take you straight into the Park. Alternatively you can keep going on the La Marina road for about another 1km over the bridge and turn left at the next crossroads onto a dirt track road this will also take you to the canal turn right at the canal and again follow it to the park. There are also another couple of entries / exits to the park which are on the San Felipe road which circumnavigates the park. Hope you find a suitable way in and out and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Total Cycling time : 4 Hours, Total Distance :Approx 45 Kms. Summary: Beautiful , Peaceful, Scenic route over flat terrain , with lovely views and great cycle tracks. All of our routes are now available from our website on www.cyclogicalcostablanca.com or from our newly published book “Cycling Routes, Maps, Tips and Advice”. Gary and Lynn are available at “Cyclogical” in Quesada, Monday to Friday from 9.30am till 5.30pm and from 10.00am till 2.00pm on a Saturday to assist and advice you on all you’re cycling requirements.

SOLTIMES SEPTEMBER 2013

RAFA Costa Blanca Throughout the year members of the Royal Air Forces Association Branches worldwide, work continuously to raise funds in support of this charity, whose aim is to help both past and present members of the Royal Air Forces and their dependents, when they are in need. Whereas in the past most of the support went to the older generation of ex-RAF personnel, conflicts over recent devades and the present conflict in Afghanistan, has vastly increased the need to support the younger exRAF personnel and those presently serving their Country. This year, despite everyone continuing to face restrictions on their finances, the total amount raised in this year’s fund raising efforts has resulted in over €6000. of this amount approximately half has been raised by members through a variety of sources, from small raffles and events, their home collection boxes and from the collection boxes located in various commercial establishments, for which grateful thanks got to the proprietors concerned. However, the one concentrated fund raising event of the year, took place in the two week period from 7th to the 19th September. In the first week, ‘WINGS WEEK’ the managers of the Iceland stores located in San Fulgencio, San Javier and Torrevieja once more gave their permission for members to collect

donations within their stores. This kind act resulted in over €3000 being donated by a most generous public. Sincere thanks go to these managers and their staff and all those members of the public who so generously supported this cause. In the second week, on Thursday 19th September a Grand Charity Draw was made at the Battle of Britain Dinner/ Dance held at the El Prado restaurant in San Miguel, which resulted in a further €600 being raised. Without doubt everyone concerned in raising such a significant amount this year, whether they be members of RAFA or a member of the public should be rightly proud of themselves in the knowledge that all this money is ring fenced for the sole use of those in need.THANK YOU EVERYONE CONCERNED

The Vega Baja Garden Club The September meeting of the Garden Club was opened by Val Duckworth, who welcomed members to the new season of meetings. The main speakers for the meeting were Anna and Harrie van Djik. They spoke about three very different plants, all sharing the great benefits to the gardener of being easy to grow, requiring little space, and best of all, giving wonderful results with little work! The first of these plants, the Dragon Fruit Cactus, Hylocereus Undatus, comes originally from tropical America. It is a fast growing, climbing cactus with spectacular large white flowers that bloom at night so as to allow pollination by bats! The edible fruits are egg shaped and sweet, with a unique perfume. The second plant, Ipomea Alba, otherwise known as the Moonflower, originates from subtropical areas, and is another climbing plant, twining up supports to reach heights over 5 meters. It is easily propagated from cuttings; three placed at the foot of an obelisk will create a wonderful feature for the evenings. The beautiful white Moonflower blooms are about 12cm across and open very quickly, each one in about two minutes. In a matter of forty minutes or so about 200 blooms will appear, creating a most spectacular sight. The Strawberry Tree, Arbutus Unedo, was the third plant discussed; this lovely slow growing tree does not need pruning, bears small white blossoms, and red berries which take a year to mature, so there are blossoms and fruit at the same time. The fruits can be made into jams and liqueurs. It is disease resistant in Spain and can manage the dry summers without watering. Anna and Harrie’s excellent and beautifully illustrated talk was very much appreciated. The Photographic Competition followed, members had been asked to bring in photographs of their own, the theme being,” A Corner of your Garden”. Many very good photographs were entered. They were judged in two categories, the first being the choice of members and the second the choice of David Stokes, and a

small team of expert phtotgraphers, of Costa Blanca Photogenics David had given members advice about taking good photographs at the June meeting,. The members’ choice was Ron Harris’ photo, whilst David Phillips’ photograph was the choice of David Stokes. The general question and answer time covered the topics of orange trees, oleander and cherry trees. There was the usual raffle of plants. The next meeting will be held on Monday 7th October at 1.45 for a 2.00pm start, at Los Rosales Restaurant on the CV895 Lemon Tree Road, Campo de Gaurdamar. If you are interested in gardening and would like to attend the meeting, you will be assured of a warm welcome. For further information, please contact Val Duckworth, tel. 966 716 527

Tomato & aubergine curry 2 aubergines, cut into chunks ~ 3 tablespoons sunflower oil 1 medium onion, chopped ~ 2 tablespoons mild curry paste 500g ripe tomatoes, quartered ~ 160g red lentils 225ml hot vegetable stock ~ 125g baby spinach leaves Handful of fresh coriander, chopped Greek yogurt, to serve

method Layer the aubergine in a colander, sprinkling with salt

as you go. Put a plate on top and weigh down with tins. Leave for 30 minutes – doing this means the aubergine will absorb less oil during frying. Rinse the aubergine briefly and pat dry with kitchen towel. Heat 2 tablespoons oil in a large pan and fry the aubergine over a medium-low heat until golden. Set aside with a slotted spoon. Add the remaining oil and fry the onion for 10 minutes until softened and golden. Add the curry paste and fry for 1 minute. Add the tomatoes, lentils, stock and aubergine, and bring to the boil. Cover and simmer for 10 minutes, then remove the lid and continue cooking for 10-15 minutes until the lentils are tender. Stir in the spinach and chopped coriander to wilt, and serve the curry with cooling yogurt.

Strictly Social Club

We are the Strictly Social Club, a non profit, English speaking club. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month, at the New Asturias Restaurant in Punta Prima on the N332. At the present time, we are actively looking to recruit new members to our club. Our club activities include, Bingo, Open the Box, raffle for wine, and a quiz, with a guest speaker from time to time. Each Christmas, we hold our annual lunch which is always well attended, and good value for money. At this time, the club will subsidise part of the cost from club funds, for regular members. During the year, we also organise trips out to places of interest. So, if you would like to join our merry throng, please contact: Brian Tanner on 678 807 159 or Margaret on 966 730 569, where you will made to be very welcome.”

SOLTIMES SEPTEMBER 2013

3rd time lucky Having been given a date for Pete’s next appointment with Traumotología at Huercal-Overa Hospital, we had both been slightly mystified when another appointment came through the post for an appointment at the same place with the same consultant, but a week or so later. Hard on its heels came a third appointment, identical in every way except for the date, which was again a couple of weeks later. I baulked at the obvious course of action – ring up and ask. I am not happy speaking Spanish on the phone; I go all of a doo-dah, especially if the circumstances require me to appear relatively intelligent. So on the day of the first appointment we packed all three appointments letters into Pete’s folder and sallied confidently forth. Entering Consultas Externas we readied ourselves for the melee that is the waiting room, squared our shoulders and walked in – to an empty room. Pete sat down on one of the dozens of spare seats and surveyed the firmly closed Consulting Room doors. ‘It’s closed!’ He said, and I felt

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk

he was probably right. ‘Knock on one of the doors, see if anyone is in.’ He encouraged. What?! Knock on a door that is clearly labelled in Spanish Don’t Knock On The Door – I’m as brave as the next person, but a suicidal idiot I am not! I’ve seen what happens to Spanish people who knock on doors which are not to be knocked on, and I tremble to think what fate would befall an English person committing the same transgression! ‘It’s closed!’ he reiterated. ‘Knock on a door!’ After he had admonished this reckless course of action four times I considered smacking him one, but you can’t hit a man with glasses, so instead I dithered indecisevely mid-room. My dilemma was solved by the appearance of a Nursie in a white coat. I surrounded her quickly and pressed that day’s appointment paper into her hand. ‘It’s closed,’ she explained, ‘Go to Cita Previa and make another appointment.’ Not wishing to appear a complete nincompoop, I presented the lady behind the Cita Previa desk with all three appointments and an expression that had Que? written all over it. Calmly she tore up the first two appointments and handed the third one back to me. ‘This one,’ she smiled. ‘Come back in October.’ If only they had put in an explanatory note with the appointment – on the other hand, if I hadn’t been too chicken to phone up….. Ah well! Third time lucky!

hasta l a vista, baby!

I have said it before and I will say it again: friendship is the most cherished and important possession we can have. Most of us have many acquaintances that we term as friends. People whose company we enjoy for an evening out; will invite round for a meal, and perhaps spend a weekend away with occasionally. And of course these are true friends by definition – what else would they be? But it seems to me that there is a word missing in the English language that describes those companions or associates that are much more than just acquaintances but fall short of being in the league of life-long bosom buddies. Come to think of it, it is not the terms ‘friend’ or ‘acquaintance’ that are wanting, but a suitable word to describe those treasured individuals who are always prepared to give help and support, and travel long distances to be with you in time of serious need - those persons

By Colin Bird :

badbirdnow@gmail.com

who are in the friendship super league, and are as precious as family. It is indeed a truism that: ‘Friends are the family you choose for yourself.’ Although I would say that perhaps the word ‘choose’ is a misnomer, because there is an element existent in such relationships that defies description. Perhaps the word ‘chemistry’ comes as close as anything to characterizing it. Because these bonds are special and rare, the majority of us can count the number of these 24 carat chums on the fingers of one hand . . . that’s disregarding spouses and partners who should in any case be our very best pals. One of the saddest days of my life was when I had to say goodbye to several of these special people all at one time. I was leaving my island home to explore another strange land and I realised how much my life had changed and been enriched by their presence over the previous two years. One of their number being my constant companion in crime throughout that time, and with whom I had shared more laughter than in the whole of the rest of my life prior to meeting him. He and the others were, and remain – some thirty eight years later – my dearest and closest friends. You see! I am using the word ‘friend’ to describe them, but in fact there is no single word in the English language that comes close to conveying this extra special bond and relationship. We merely make do with the two word description of ‘best friend’ on such occasions. We have all pledged to endeavour to

gather every two years which can be a logistical nightmare. Apart from the inconvenience of work for them – a word that I have been fortunate enough to have erased from my vocabulary – there is the problem of geography. They live on both sides of the United States and equally, both East and West coasts of Canada. Add Dubai into the mix and the difficulties of arranging reunions become apparent. But still, we have managed it on two occasions, and in 2014 it will be our turn to host the get-together here in Spain, and I know that once again, we will slip comfortably back into each other’s company effortlessly and smoothly as if the intervening years never happened. Something for us to look forward to and the neighbours to start thinking about putting as much distance as possible between them and Villamartin come June. But none of this denigrates or trivialises the affection for those other friends that we have day to day contact with and whose company we enjoy greatly on an on-going basis. In fact life would be unthinkable without their presence. Most are still part of our lives, but some have returned to the Mother country over the years and it is always a great sadness to know that perhaps we will not enjoy their company or even see them again. Others come and go – spending time in

alqueria Los Pasatiempos de Alqueria John MacDonald (El Sordo) - www.caratacus.eu

viewpoint

35

Alquerian pastimes are deep-rooted in the traditions of the sierra. The most obvious is annoying those from the opposing barrio and the most popular is the one in which Manuela excels. Of those that can be discussed in polite company perhaps football naturally takes the lead. Football in Alqueria was given a boost in 2013 when Alqueria Unido attended the UEFA Cup. They didn’t last long. Just long enough for the spelling mistake to be spotted. They had to make their own way back from Amsterdam, hitchhiking and committing petty street crime to pay for food and shelter during their trek home. The gentry of Alqueria have long practiced the sport of shooting. Using a selection of firearms ranging from shotguns to shoulder launched antitank missiles they have systematically decimated the wild-life of the area. Not as popular as it once was due to the decline in the number of devotees. The shooting party usually met at the Bar La Casa Devante where alarming quantities of Remitroot Rum were consumed. They would then stumble and stagger into the campo and start blasting at anything that moved. This had an adverse effect on the population of Alqueria in general and shooting enthusiasts in particular. There was a bid to ban the sport but as it kept the numbers of chinless wonders down it was deemed good for the environment. Newt hunting is on the increase in the Village with the Alquerian Newt

Hound bred specifically for the purpose. The Alquerian Newt is a genetically modified subspecies of the Common European Newt. Being ten times larger and with fearsome teeth that can tear through corrugated iron the creature is a match for any hunter. The Alquerian Newt Hound was bred from the Andalucían Hound by Pedro El Estevado. When the dog finds a newt it stands on three legs with its near-side front paw pointed at the amphibian, tail erect while barking and howling. The Newt is then secured and sold in the backstreets of Cairo where its genitals fetch a high price as an effective cure for Camel Drivers Crutch. Imported pastimes have never done well in Alqueria, the attempted introduction of Morris Dancing is a prime example. When the Kessingland Morris Men and Haddock Gutters from Lowestoft arrived in Alqueria their tiny minds believed Morris Dancing would replace the passionate, exhausting flamenco. They gave one half of one display. Most Alquerians simply headed for the nearest bar, those that stayed soon lost the will to live. Only Loco Paco enjoyed the spectacle, he performs the same gyrations when the moon is full and bright. Traditional pastimes have always held sway in Alqueria. There is none more enjoyable and traditional than that favoured by Manuela.

Spain and the UK equally – but again, it is a wrench to watch them leave albeit for only a matter of months. And so it is hard to come to terms with the fact that I am about to lose another friend. Perhaps not lose in the strictest sense, but whose presence in my weekly life will soon be absent. It’s a somewhat unique friendship because

we have never actually met. This may sound bizarre, but we have had weekly electronic exchanges with much humour and a good deal of banter for the best part of five years now – something I have come to look forward to. So good luck and further success in your new life dear Claire, and above all, much happiness. You have been an inspirational editor and I will miss you greatly.

SOLTIMES SEPTEMBER 2013

braben’s blog...

I spent a lot of time as a child in theatres with my dad, who was a comedy writer. At that time he wrote for Ken Dodd and I would often be taken to the shows. My dad died recently and I got to thinking about all the weird and wonderful acts we saw; harmonica players who were also acrobats, a dancing duck, which was placed on a hot plate to make it “dance”-that’d be about as welcome today as repeats of Rising Damp! But one of the highlights was always the sword swallower. What I want to know is, how does anybody decide to become one? Is there a burning desire deep down, wherever desires burn, to stand in front of an audience and thrust incredibly sharp and not insignificantly lethal weapons down your throat, or is it just plain stupidity? No don’t send in the answer, I think we are in agreement there. But swallowing a sword isn’t something you do accidentally, like spilling scalding water down your leg or taking the wrong turning in your car, no, you can’t absent mindedly manoeuvre a sword down your throat then wonder how it got there-unless you had drunk substantial amounts of falling down water! Then, once you make the momentous decision to follow the path of shoving finely honed steel down your throat, where do you train? I looked at University courses and although there are all manner of things you can do there, sword swallowing isn’t one of them. Of course, even when-if-you have found an expert to train you, how do you go about finding work, I bet Job Centres aren’t overflowing with openings. But that shouldn’t put you off, because I think we need sword swallowers, fire eaters and the like. Look, be honest, what would you rather do, watch someone making a meal out of a burning stick, or the latest fiscal speech by some dodgy politician-is there any other kind? Exactly! Those that love all things quiz know that quiz setters are given a book filled with fiendish and trick questions when they graduate from quiz setting school. Quiz setters guard these mythical tomes with their lives much like the Magic Circle does with their magic spells. One question that often stumps the unsuspecting is – what is the nearest star to Earth? Another more relevant question to this article which also comes from the secret book is - what is the largest volcano known to man? The answer may be more earthbound now as scientists mapping the ocean floor found the remains of a Super Volcano 1000 miles off the coast of Japan. It covers an area of 120,000 square miles which considering the British Isles covers 93,000 miles means it’s rather large. Luckily it’s been extinct for over a hundred and forty million years. Currently the world’s largest active volcano is Mauna Loa in Hawaii, yet this whippersnapper covers a mere 2000 square miles. Olympus Mons on Mars spreads over 113,000 miles soaring nearly 14 miles high and reaches a height three times that of Everest. Even at that height Olympus Mons only makes it as the

second highest peak in the solar system as up in the Asteroid Belt between Mars and Jupiter is Vesta which is what’s known as a Proto Planet. Vesta has a surface area the size of Pakistan with an impact crater called Rheasilvia on it. The peak in the middle of the crater rises up well over14 miles, so standing on tip toes it just pips Olympus Mons to the tallest student in class prize. Even with the highest mountain in the solar system sticking out like an angry spot on its bottom; Vesta is only the second largest lump of rock in the Asteroid Belt that’s not quite a planet, Ceres makes it as the largest. Ceres is about 500 miles across with a surface area the size of India, which sounds large until compared to our own Moon which is 25 times larger. Ceres was discovered in 1801with many thinking it was the missing link. For years astronomers thought there should be another planet in between Mars and Jupiter. Unfortunately Ceres does not fit the very strict criteria to be classed as a planet so it is just a plain old dwarf planet. This is the same class Pluto was demoted to in 2006 giving the solar system just 8 planets instead of the 9 we

were all taught at school. Poor Pluto was also upstaged a year earlier in 2005 when Eris was discovered and named as the largest of all dwarf planets. Eris was originally going to be called Xena after the warrior princess from telly as more female names are needed in space. It starts with X as in Planet-X the mythical planet that is supposed to exist. Mars does win a prize for the largest impact crater in the solar system called Utopia Planitia measuring 2100 miles across. Trekkies will recognise the craters name as in Star Trek lore this is the site of the Federation ship yards both on the planet Mars and wait for it - in aero synchronous orbit above it; the USS Enterprise-D was built there. Captain Jean Luc Picard as played by the ever young Patrick Stewart was the commanding officer for most of that starships life. I apologize in advance to any Trekkie reading if my Star Trek history is not quite exact on this but there’s no need to write in with any corrections.

British TV – Is all the hassle worth it? Over the week I’ve have a few grumblings that my article last week was a little technical for some of you good readers and for that I apologise! The aim is always to clarify some, usually, technical article in a way that allows most people can understand. We all know that, with the change of satellites, we are likely to lose British TV. While reading up on the subject of the imminent loss of coverage, I found a “footprint” map of the proposed reception area. Think of a real footprint in the sand, and the idea of any other “footprint” will be obvious. This footprint, which currently covers most of the south of Spain will, in future, barely touch the border with France! British Gibraltar will also lose there english TV. We have already considered the option of internet TV and the benefits and problems associated with it. So, today I want to look at some of the devices that you can buy (and ridiculous prices that some want to charge!). The list of devices that seem to be commonly available are Google Chromecast; Roku; Apple TV; the WII, X-Box and Playstation games consoles; Tivo (I can almost hear Dr Who!). It is all over the net (bloody good marketing) that Google, who are the paragon of virtue and discretion (fingers firmly crossed), have released a memory chip sized device called ‘Chromecast’ that will allow you to get you much needed TV. They are, unfortunately, making it difficult for programmers to

write additional programs to enhance the new chip. So much for their ‘Open Source’ (transparent and obvious) policies! At $35 it is really cheap and by first reports, even from jaded techno-jouralists, is that it is good! Roku, were the first to use internet streaming for TV and online multimedia, and are still the leaders. Although their prices start a little higher and can get very expensive, they still have all the advantages that google offer and a track record of success, stablility and reliability. Apple TV, although up to google, were the new boys, their product does seem a little limited and doesn’t allow for BBC etc. Games consoles are just that! TiVo is one of the most expensive of the devices out there but does boast some superb features such as, inbuilt recording, watch a channel and record another. This is a real toy, but do we need this much? There are others and I will look into them at another time. Finally a quick warning! There is malware that will get on your machine, tell you the FBI or Guardia are watching YOU and that a fine of 200€ is payable to unlock you machine. RUBBISH! No-one is watching you and the malware can be gotten rid of relatively easily! Just shut the machine off and ring a friend or better still, me! Till next time, Have an uneventful but enjoyable week. Time to start studying up on XBMC.

SPORTING mazarron CAMPOSOL vs. MINERVA 1-1

OCTOBER 2013

Mazarron 22-9-2013

Sunday 12 o clock Sharp the time had come for Sporting Camposol to play the first official home game. The oppenent was Minerva. Minerva is one of the favoites for the title. They had a very good pre season with good results. And the week before Minerva won there first game with 4-1. So it could be a vey difficult Sunday for Sporting. Sporting started very well and created true Moha en striker Dani 2 or 3 changes to score the 1-0. Minerva started very nervous and sloppy. In the 26th minute the the right winger lost the ball to Abdel. Abdel gave the ball to Moha and with a beautifull pass he created the change for Dani. Dani stayed very cool and with a loud bang he scored the deserved 1-0. The rest of the first half was a big battle on midfield with Sporting midfielders Juan and Daniel Scott as best players. There where no changes created by both teams. In the second half Minerva start to play better football, but gave much space away.

cd montesinos After last weeks hard earned win at Benijofar, Monte hosted a well organised and disciplined Almoradi B side who dominated the first half. Montes only real chance of the half went to Vaz whose run and shot was saved well. Vaz went off after that and replaced by Omar. Dimitry also had a shot go wide from Fernandos cheeky chipped free kick. Almoradis goal came from bad defending

Sporting didn’t know what to do with that. The defense of Sporting held strong defence an Minerva could not create any oppertunity. Sporting had the oppertunity the score the 2-0 and 3-0 but central defender Roberto had no luck with his headers created from the corners that where given. In the 75th minute the ref made a mistake to give a free kick for Minerva. Minerva placed the ball in to the box and in between a group of players it was unfortunate the right defender of Sporting Jaquar who received the ball wrong on his foot and therefore hit the ball into his own goal. In de final minute it was the

and debut keeper Alex could do nothing to stop the tap in from the cross. The second half seen changes as Rubio and Diego came on for Wallace and Angel, Monte seemed to be more dominant, then the referee sent off Almoradis number 9 for second yellow for simulation, 3 mins later a straight red went to Almoradis number 8 for deliberate hand ball. Even though against 9

number 9 of Minerva who volleyed the bal directly to goal, but with an excellent save from Edu it stayed 1-1. Coach Jelco Oosterhof had mixt feelings after the game. “I am happy with 1 point ofcourse against Minerva but if the ref didn’t make a mistake we simply won the game” I am very proud of my players they played all very well, especially the youngsters Fran, Scott, Abdel & Calum are gettin better by the week” Next week: AD Pliego Sporting maz Camposol

MAZARRON FC 3 ATLETICO CABEZO DE TORRES 0 Mazarron’s fine start to the season continued with a 3-0 home victory against Atletico Cabezo de Torres. It was another good all round performance although the final scoreline perhaps somewhat flattered Mazarron.

Mazarron started the game in attacking fashion and Pescao was unlucky to see his first minute effort rebound off the post. Then, after eight minutes Jose Ruben headed wide from a Tico free kick. Cecilio was next in action with a rasping 25 yard drive which forced a fine save from the visiting goalkeeper. Atletico Cabezo were limited to occasional breakaways in the early stages but Ruben had to be alert to prevent the visitors taking an underserved lead. Then, at the other end, Tico’s clever ball found Cecilio who hit his shot straight at the keeper. After 24 minutes, Tico and Jose Ruben combined well and Ruben saw his fierce shot clip the cross bar. However, three minutes before the interval, Ruben flicked on a long ball into the path of Alfonso who made no mistake from 10 yards to give Mazarron the lead.

Atletico Cabezo came much more into the game in the second half and Mazarron had to defend for long stages. Young Ruben in the Mazarron goal has grown in confidence and, with the defence well marshalled by Alcaraz and Juan Andreu, the home team weathered the storm. With 15 minutes remaining Cecilio ran onto a through ball and, having drawn the keeper off his line, his intended pass to the unmarked Jose Ruben was deflected into the net by a visiting defender to give Mazarron a two goal cushion. Five minutes later Mazarron scored their third when Jose Ruben rose superbly to head

Tico’s free kick into the far corner of the net. Substitute Juanillo showed his pace in the last minute when a superb pass from Victor saw him racing clear off the home defence only to be thwarted by the onrushing keeper. Mazarron are one of only three teams with 100% records and travel to CD Juvenia next weekend in second place in the Primera Autonomica. Team: Ruben, Victor, Alcaraz, Juan Andreu, Dani, Alfonso, Moha (Juanillo), Tico, Pescao (Chema), Jose Ruben (Adrian), Cecilio Man of the Match: Alfonso

October arrives ........ The nights draw in and soon the clocks will change and we will be heading to winter in Spain. Those of you spending your first winter here will find the nights do get long and chilly - often lovely in the daytime but by 4pm its heating on and more nights in, It is not so tempting to go out once you get relaxed and warm ! Spain is not 24/7 sunshine and you will need some form of heat and a good duvet ! The pool goes out of use , the gardens need less water and food needs to be more “comforting” – roasts come back on a Sunday and stews are often in the slow cooker. Although most of us do come here, in part, for the weather winter does have some advantages ............ prepare for and enjoy it. TV NEWS ........The big issue of what will happen here in Spain to BBC and ITV when the new “E” satellite becomes operational and transmits these channels gets closer to being resolved. For publications we need to have these scripts with the magazine editors by the 15th of each month – the exact day the new satellite is due to launch!! (readers on the net may get an update depending on progress). It will be 2 to 4 weeks being tested and positioned, when we may get some clues as to the new reception footprint but it will not be final until the channels are moved and we see the results down here – probably one morning after an overnight swap. There may well be no changes but equally there may be some huge ones – 0ur 13 years experience in the business says signals will become weaker but still available ....... some of you with smaller dishes may have problems but nothing is certain. When the changes do happen we will issue an email bulletin and update the website – www.rainbowsats.org . STOP PRESS ………… The launch did not happen on 15th ! Lots predictions for week commencing 23rd ……… but Astra a very secretive about such info. It will be soon ! Those of you with HD boxes may have seen

that Film4 has gone HD .......... not sure all the transmissions are in HD but at least some are. We are still getting lots of enquires about using “smart” TV’s or internet connectable digiboxes in Spain for UK services such as BBCiplayer, ITV player, 4demand, Lovefilm, etc ......... when people try they usually don’t work. This is because the operator sees you have a “foreign” IP address and will not allow access. There are various ways around this – isn’t there always – and we can supply a router that plugs into your router (not replace it) and then anything plugged into this new router will have a UK IP address and work on all sites but as ever there are some restrictions. To work well your Internet must be A1 with its own IP address ...... most antenna based systems will not work. You really need a good 3 MB speed as the router will take 10% of the speed to operate and you will need 2 MB for any “live” TV viewing. Consistency is an absolute criteria as any drops in speed or even momentarily loss of internet will create a fragmented viewing “hick”. When you perform an internet speed test (www.speedtest. net works well) the figure the test comes up with is an average – not a consistent speed. Experience has shown that the only way to be sure of a watchable picture is to try ....... this all may sound complicated but you can ask us for details. Well I have a feeling many of you MAY be contacting us before the next regular newsletter asking how to get BBC and ITV back on your screens – IF that is the case then please remember there are lots of you in “the same boat” and it is going to take a period of time to get any replacement equipment required and install it - patience by all is going to be needed ! If only we knew what the outcome of the changes was to be we would be getting equipment in stock and , more importantly , manufacturers would be making it but as none of us know until it happens – if it does – then all upgrade installs will take some time to complete.

Tuesday Night Trios league Tuesday Night Trios League 2013-14 Tuesday night saw 14 teams gather at the Ozone bowl, to begin a new season. Cornish Prides Paul Johnson, with a 206 scratch game and Mary Whitelock, 566 handicap series, gave last seasons runners up, Hall y Day, a bit of a scare but it was all in vain, as Martti Timonen started the season with two 200+ games and, a scratch series of 628, 682 with handicap. Bar Mosquitos tried hard against S***t Happens, taking the first game but, losing 2 – 6, Terry Capon of SH rolling a 571 series handicap. The only new team of this season is The Dreamers, led ably by Hello

Last seasons team Bandoleros, has been renamed Juans Warriors, in memory of their Captain Juan Vidal, who sadly died earlier this year. But the change of name wasn’t enough to inspire them to beat Los Lobos, who had Dennis Hilton and John Larkin to thank for a first night 6 – 2 win. Team high game and series was bowled by the Mixers, 1605 and 1794, with Bosse Soderstrom leading the way with a 608 handicap series, as they inflicted a heavy 8 – 0 defeat on Crazy Pinz. FC TORREVIEJA GET LUCKY

Last Sunday evening Torry entertained Utiel, a team from the wine region of Valencia. The game kicked-off in brilliant sunshine in front of a disappointing crowd of a little over 350. The Torry manager made a number of changes from the team which was defeated at Muro the previous week. Eloy came in for Vicente at right-back, Pastor for Alberto on the right flank and Gasch for Burguillos in midfield. Torrevieja: Carrion, Eloy, Valdeolivas (Burguillos 68’), Alexis, Rafa, Dani Meseguer, Pastor, Obele, Dani Lucas (Vicente Boix 68’), Gasch (Carrasco 65 ‘) and Micro. Not Used: Carlos Moreno and Alberto. Both teams made a tentative start to the game and it was not until the 8th minute when the game came to life when Pastor played in Obele who composed himself but shot straight at the Utiel keeper who gathered the ball comfortably. Torry were showing little cohesion or purposeful movement and play. The opposition were not committing too many men forward either. After 15 minutes Gasch cut in from the left and unleashed a powerful shot from an angle which the keeper palmed round the post. After 25 minutes a superbly flighted free-kick from the vastly experienced “pot bellied” Utiel play-maker presented a free header for a Utiel defender who put it wide. On 30 minutes Torry pinned Utiel back and won a succession of corners which didn’t, however, bare any fruit. On 42 minutes incisive passing around the edge of the Torry

the Utiel technical staff and Torry player Valdeolivas who had been substituted but had remonstrated to the referee from the dug-out. He had received a caution when on the field and the second he received when off the field was followed by the dreaded red card. On 43 minutes Obele was played in again and from around the penalty spot had time to pick his spot but hesitated and when he shot his effort was deflected wide. Obele is a player who is devoid of confidence in front of goal. He needs a goal and then just maybe we will see a player who can regularly find the net again like he did last season for Almoradi. The referee brought the game to a close with Torry very fortunate to have won against a team who at least deserved a draw. On Sunday it is “Derby” day when Torry make the short journey to play Orihuela CF. They need to improve and the manager needs to decide on his best eleven and sort things out tactically and try to get more out of the team and bring some cohesion to their play. To catch up on up to date information about Torry visit the new Torry Army website www.fctorrevieja.net or the clubs website www. futbolclubtorrevieja.net . box resulted in a forward having a glorious shooting opportunity but fortunately for Torry the linesman’s flag went up before the opposition forward could pull the trigger. The ref blew the half-time whistle to end what had been a pretty uneventful first-half. After 53 Torry were handed a lifeline when one of the Utiel defenders handled the ball in the air from a Torry corner. It was the linesman who spotted it and flagged and after the ref had consulted with the linesman he pointed to the spot. Dani Lucas stepped up and struck the spot kick into the back of the net to give Torry a 1-0 lead. This should have provided a platform for Torry to build on but they didn’t and the opposition started to come more into the game. After 70 minutes a tremendous strike from one of the Utiel mid-fielders struck the angle of post and bar and cannoned back into play across goal and was cleared. This signaled the start of a passage of play by Utiel which pegged Torry back but Torry managed to keep them out with some desperate defending. After 76 minutes a good driving run towards goal by Pastor and a low cross across the 6 yard line was hacked away by a defender. After 79 minutes a quick break from Utiel resulted in a fierce shot cannoning back off the post with Carrion beaten. Then followed another spell of Utiel pressure in and around the Torry box with another shot hitting the post and a header from close range just going wide. Torry managed to survive and play was broken up by the referee who started to brandish cards to some of

with a wonderful smile and a very friendly atmosphere. The tee boxes are of lush grass, the fairways are the same and the greens are getting close to perfection after the recent hollow tining. This is a course that is an absolute pleasure to play even though it is “out of the way”. An absolute pleasure? It was to two of the guests for sure and it took 40, yes FORTY points, for Marijke (try and pronounce that after a few pints of Guinness) Van Diggelen from Holland to only come 2nd and with an incredible 45 points taking top spot for Alan Mahon who is, apparently, a professional sports man of hurling fame and was only playing his 7th game of golf. In the Silver Division it was pleasing to see Audrey Mellor taking 3rd place with 28 points, Colin Marsden (welcome back Hippo) in the runner-up slot with 30 points leaving Captain Mick Kennedy to claim the top slot with 34 points. The Gold Division fared a little better and the top three returned a 35 point tally and the good old countback meant that Alan Rixson was pushed

into 3rd place by Michael Fearnehough who was pushed back by the overall winner of Steve Higgins. In an exclusive interview, he (Steve Higgins) claims he was inspired by the long hitting Dutch lady Daphne Mol. His first words on the 1st tee after seeing her opening shot cannot be printed but ended with the word “hell”. This was said a few times after her drive and got louder on the 18th when it took him 2 shots to get to her drive. It is plain to see that their annual excursion to Spain and lessons with “Joe the Pro” does have a benefit. Only 3 of the 4 NTP’s on offer were claimed and the recipients of a sleeve of Srixson Soft Feels for this feat were Vernon Brown, Alex Goslan and Steve Higgins: Photo is of the Silver category winners.

TORREIVEJA U3A STILL GOING STRONG No, we haven’t gone away or closed down but simply been in relaxed mode for the summer. Many members met in a series of informal summer meetings at the usual meeting venue in June, July, and August for coffee and a chat. This was a good way to keep friendships ongoing and catch up on news - not everyone disappears back to the UK in the hottest months of the year! Some active people attended beach parties in July at El Mojon and in August at Torre Le Mata. All members and guests were welcomed and it was great fun. The boat trip to Tabarca on 21st September, which included a

BULL FLANAGAN GOLF SOCIETY - SEPTEMBER MEETING

This meeting of the society was held on the 20th September and was a special day for the Vice Captain Ton Gijzen as he was acting as Captain for the match and had been covering for the vacant captains post since June of this year. The venue chosen for the event was Vistabella and it is always a pleasure to visit this course and this is highlighted by the attendance of 32 members and guests who on relection all enjoyed their days golfing. The course was in excellent condition which is something we have become used to finding as the norm when visiting Vistabella and congratulations are extended to Pablo Riestra and all his staff for the hard work they continue to put in order to make sure we get the best conditions available which in turn adds to the quality of the day out golfing, well done Pablo. The course was a little slow as early morning starts does have the problem of early morning dew which takes some time to dry out. Whilst the fairways were slow from very little carry all the greens were excellent and true to help with accuracy when putting.

Scores on the day were very good and this reflects the quality of the course. In first place with 40 points was Chris Smith who will be receiving a handicap cut, followed by Keith Smith (no relation) on 36 points who will also receive a slight reduction and in third place was visiting player Ken Enever on 34 points and who plays most of his golf at Marquesa with Eurogolf. Best front nine was won by Stephen Cheesewright with 22 points and the best back nine was one by Alan McCombie with 19 points. The three nearest the pins were won by Chris Udell, Fred Hope and John Rush. The 28ers draw war won by Tony Ackroyd. The acting Captain had decided to dedicate the days golf for charity to the Oncology department at Torrevieja Hospital. To help this cause a penalty system was arranged at the course and this theme was continued with a raffle and auction back at Bull Flanagan where Chris and his staff , arranged an excellent buffet, well done Chris and thank you from all members for the continued

Ton carried out the first function of his Captains year by presenting the Player of The Year award to Bill Fantom. Presentation of all awards to the various winners was made and he took the opportunity to outline how he saw his Captains year progressing and he thanked everyone for their attendance and support for him especially with the generous contributions everyone made for the charity which raised over 600-00 euros. Thank you all indeed and I hope to see you and have your support again at Alenda in October.

Eurogolf La Marquesa Press Report. 51 players took part in our Monthly Stableford/Non Winners Cup Thursday 19 September 2013 at our home course of La Marquesa Golf Course. The Non Winners Cup is only open to those members who did not win any of the Monthly Medals/Stableford /one off or Annual Competitions last year. The weather is still very hot and sticky and unusually warm for this time of the year. The membership of Eurogolf would like to compliment the new owners of the ‘Clubhouse’ for the renovations which have been carried

out, making it a pleasure to return to their facility after a hard day on the golf course. The staff are friendly and helpful providing a good quality of service and we, as a society look forward to many years of co-existence and wish them every success in their new

venture..
