He parked it in the Aparcabicis del Moneo only to find it gone when he returned!

The accident occurred in the early hours of the morning as the victim was walking with a friend along the Carretera RM-3 Autovía de Alhama, in the direction of Mazarrón, at the exit to Pinilla.

The Portavoz Socialista (Socialist spokesman) in the Ayuntamiento de Murcia, Pedro López, decided to join the trend of sustainable mobility, and went to work by bicycle.

Unfortunately this is not an uncommon occurrence. Mariano Vicente, Presidente de la Asociación de Amigos de la Bicicleta de Murcia commented on the rising number of bicycle thefts, in part due to more people using them as transport to work.

Bicycle thefts are occurring in many diverse ways; Some are taken from the streets where they are parked by simply breaking the lock.

Several incidents of theft have occurred outside the door of the Reina Sofía, at the side of the Moneo, and in La Flota.

Juan Antonio Sánchez, proprietor of the garage/shop spoke of daily reports of thefts of bicycles on the street in broad daylight.

Thieves have even broken into storage or residential garages to take bicycles, and only this week a dozen residential storage units in the Joven Futura, in Espinardo, were broken in to, and high specification bicycles were taken.

These bikes often end up being sold on the black market or in second-hand shops.

Laura Escudero was lucky enough to recover her bike, thanks to police intervention, from just such an establishment. Some such businesses send a record of the items they purchase to the Cuerpo Nacional de Policía, to be checked against a ‘missing’ register – however, the system is complicated.

To make it difficult for thieves, the experts agree – there is nothing better than a good

lock! Juan Antonio Sánchez recommended that riders always using a U-shaped lock, but accepts that this type has disadvantages; The weight, the price, and it can not be secured to a tree or similar. ‘You have to spend on the padlock in relation to the bike.’ he added.

Tips to prevent your bicycle being stolen: Always put your bike lock on when you have to leave it unattended (even for a few moments).

Buy the best lock system you can afford.

None will be as expensive as the cost of a new bike and will serve for generations of bicycles.

Pick a lock system that can not be cut easily - In the security scale U-shaped locks are by far the safest.

Always try to secure the bike frame and both wheels to an immovable object such as a pole or a fence.

Protect your bike by entering your serial number and registering it in the registro municipal.

Choose crowded places to leave your bike.

Use the city’s public parks.

If you regularly use a bicycle in or around Murcia, you are probably aware of the problem. Bicycle users Associations report massive theft of bicycles in the city , and have requested enhanced surveillance and control of sales channels. ‘We believe there has to be some kind of organised group’ stresses Fina Montoya, Presidenta de Murcia en Bici.

A pedestrian has died after being run over by a van near Mazarrón.

The Centro de Coordinación de Emergencias de la Región de Murcia received a call from

the driver of the vehicle, warning that the body of a male was lying in the right lane of the road.

The Guardia Civil and a specialised medical ambulance from the Servicio Murciano de Salud attended the scene, and certified the death of that person, but more details were not known. laverdad.es

Renovation work on the synagogue of the Castillo Renovation work on the synagogue of the Castillo, whose chief architect was Francisco Jurado, has been awarded one of the Premios de Arquitectura de la Región de Murcia, awarded by the Consejería de Obras Públicas y Ordenación del Territorio.

The archaeological remains of the synagogue, which dates from the early fifteenth century, were a result of the construction of the Parador Castillo de Lorca, and have been reconstructed in accordance with the original building.

The attractiveness of this synagogue could be that it was never turned into a church to be abandoned, along with the rest of the Jewry, after the decree of 1492 during in the reign of the Catholic Monarchs, who expelled the Jews from Spain.

Francisco Jurado explained that ‘a rigorous respect was shown for the ancient remains, and on the advice of archaeologists and historians the restoration of the structures was carried out, preserving the volume and recreating the building as it had been originally.’

The architect designed the reconstructed parts in wood, with the intention of differentiating the new work from the existing original stone and brickwork, following a ‘strict criteria of preserving the original floor

plan.

The woodwork is placed in a steel container, to protect and preserve the site. This guarantees the preservation of the original elements and, if necessary, it would be possible to continue archaeological research, and even to restore the synagogue’s original appearance.

As yet only the pavement level has been completed with ceramic material, clearly differentiating the original parts.

Jurado continued ‘the criterion of respect for the original has been carried so far that, in the ‘Via Sacra’ originally a paved area with glazed ceramics, of which only the imprint is left in the mortar from tiles torn from the ground, a pavement has been installed using the same cutting tools without removing the mortar or losing track of the original parts.’

A geotextile sheet was placed on the site, a protective layer of sand was placed on that, and new white ceramics were stuck directly onto a metal plate of one square meter. The result is a new pavement upon which the public can walk, but which at the same time protects the original pavement.

spectacular vehicle fire on ring road A spectacular vehicle fire in the middle of the Murcian Ring Road miraculously caused no injuries, and very little delay to traffic flow.

The incident took place at the Andalucía exit. For reasons unknown a car caught fire, according to the Centro de Coordinación de Emergencias 112.

two in the afternoon, and was spectacular because of the volume of flame. However, the fire was of short duration, and was contained before the vehicle was removed from the highway.

Results in for VI Ruta de la Tapa y Cóctel of Molina de Segura straw poll throws up a widely diverse set of experiences The 60 establishments participating in the Ruta served 181,045 portions or servings, according to the Concejalía de Comercio.

In the 44 Locales de tapas, 11 Locales de cócteles and 5 serving desserts, 3.017 servings were dispensed.

The Council leader José Ángel Alfonso, said

‘We are talking about an economic impact of 360,000 euros at an average of two euros per head. Last year 227,000 servings were sold, though there were 17 fewer participating establishments over a week less time period.

This worked out at an average of 2,953 sold services.

hailstorm leaves 3 people injured A vicious hailstorm left three people injured and devastated the vines in the village of Raspay.

The storm lasted for half an hour, and dumped hailstones the size of small tangerines on the day that the Agencia Española de Meteorología had put out an alerta amarilla for hailstorms in the Altiplano.

Among the injured was Amable Verdú. A 64 year old farmer, he is well used to the rigours of Nature, but says he has never had an experience like that, when the hailstorm caught him in the open. ‘I ran because the falling stones were huge. I tried to get to the bar, but it was impossible. I sheltered next to a wall to save my life.’ He said. However, the ice bullets hit him on the head, causing a wound that needed three stitches, another wound to his arm and bruises all over the body. ‘I went to the Clinic at Pinoso for treatment and there I saw another man with

an ear hanging off, also due to the hail.’

Residents described the storm as ‘rapid and violent’, destroying everything, especially cars, breaking glass and headlights and leaving the bodywork full of holes.

Other neighbours said that the ice left a white blanket on the streets, where they saw a large dog die - stoned to death by the hailstones.

The first person polled had no trouble with receiving their bills, but found outgoing mail posted to addresses within Spain arrived at its destination far more erratically.

At least they received their bills! A lady from Monforte received two letter from the electricity board on the same day. One was a letter telling her that her electricity bill was long overdue for payment. The other letter was – yes, the electricity bill!

Parcels were a nightmare for another; Twice they had correctly addressed parcels returned to sender for no apparent reason. On another occasion a parcel had become buried underneath a pile of other things, so therefore didn’t get delivered until eventually it came to

light.

Perhaps not always practical, especially for those who don’t drive and live far out in the Campo, but for others a good idea is to have a post box or buzon in the Post Office, and collect it straight from there. This would reduce the possibility of lost or forgotten mail.

However, one lucky lady asserts that ‘For the last 15 years I have been sending , more or less regularly, parcels and cards (including Xmas cards) internally, and from Spain to the UK, France , Qatar and Egypt, and I can honestly swear that all envelopes and packages have been delivered within a reasonable time frame.

Not one single thing has been lost.’

Generally it seems that trusting important letters and cards to MRW, or a local courier service, such as can be found in many British stationers, is the most reliable, and provides peace of mind at a minor cost. Or, as they say in a certain advertisement - Priceless!

Chorale chamber choir

The “Chorale” chamber choir will be performing for St. Cecilia’s Day (22 November, in Pilar’s Ntra. Snra del Pilar church). Friday after the Mass at 8pm. Free admission.

Included in the programme will be extracts from “Hymn to St. Cecilia” and two pieces from “Ceremony of Carols” by top British composer Benjamin Britten, whose birthday also falls on this day (this year is the 100th anniverary).

€653 raised for cancer charity AECC

For the second year running a group of ladies calling themselves “The WayIn Club”, held a coffee morning in aid of cancer charity AECC. Meeting every Friday morning at Casa Mia in El Chaparral the ladies raised a massive €653 for AECC by selling home-made cakes and holding a a very profitable raffle. The money was raised with the help of Casa Mia, KCI Hair

and Beauty, The Salon at Aguas Nuevas, The Ship, KCI, Garbo’s, Fiona Harlowe and everyone else that donated. AECC visited the group on the morning of the event and were delighted to see the amount of effort being put into it and the variety of goodies on offer! AECC’s hospital volunteer Ann Bissett was presented with the money at the following weekly meeting.

Soloists from the choir will also be featured in a “Music in Quiet Places” concert on 20th October in the Campoverde church, along with some instrumental jazz items with special guest Jake McKay on saxes (from Holland).

WHEN LITTLE THINGS MEAN A LOT!

With so many local amateur dramatic groups either closing or merging with others, a brand new charitable organisation has brought a new perspective to the concept of ‘fun-based fund-raising.’

SMILE CHARITY GROUP is a not-for-profit organisation.

We are presently a small group of individuals, whose sole objective is to raise much needed funds for charity, and to do so through the medium of ‘live entertainment’. Unlike some other organisations, we are truly volunteers, and receive no payment or expenses for our time and efforts.

Whilst working through the process of becoming legally registered in Spain, we have organised a number of entertainment nights for ‘El Alto La Dolores Restaurante’ in Guardamar, and have already been instrumental in raising over 2,000€ for church and charity.

As well as organising ‘live entertainment’ nights, the group are currently rehearsing a specially written, adult pantomime, for performance at Christmas time, with all profits from ticket sales going to charity.

If you are a like-minded individual, and would like to learn more about us, please come along to an informal social gathering, on Monday the 21st October at 7.30pm, at ‘Bar Catorce’ in Benijófar, (behind the Ayuntamiento).

Besides ‘raising a smile for those in need on the Costa Blanca’, we also aim to make new friends and explore new ideas for fun-based fund raising.

A PROUD MARQUES Whenever I approach the road sign “Glorieta”, my thoughts turn to traffic islands, overflowing with wondrous plants, with perhaps a Palm tree or water feature, amidships. Let down most times, I fear.

A major disappointment to travellers on the RM314, Portman to Los Belones Road, in the shadow of the Sierra Minera, is the “Glorieta” indicated, just prior to the turnoff to Punta Negra.

A more scruffy little mound of green cement and Tarmac, with weeds pushing through the surface, would be hard to imagine. It would seem more euros may have been spent on the sign than the island!

Residents of Los Alca’zares can be rightly proud of one “Glorieta” in their neighbourhood. Known affectionately as the “Engine Roundabout”, locomotive No.27 Marques de Bolarque, quite a long name for a small engine, spent most of it’s working life in the coalfields of northern Spain.. My rather grainy photograph, shows No 27 arriving in El Entrego in December 1969, pulling wagons, loaded with coal, on way to the washing plant.

At the end of it’s working life, The Marques was dropped onto a low loader, and bought to the Costa Blanca.

Adjacent to the “Glorieta” is a miners retirement home, where a display of mine

working memorabilia can be seen, with some items for sale. I wonder if there residents within the home, that perhaps worked, or even “Fired” No.27?

Looking at “The Marques de Bolarque” today, in Los Alca’zares, that’s what turns a roundabout into a “Grand Glorieta”. * Photographs show “The Marques”, now at rest, and when at work.

Somehow, each year, money, mysteriously bubbles to the top, of normally empty vaults, deep in the cellars of ayuntamientos, here on the Costa Blanca, to finance and set in motion, concerts, parades and fireworks, of such potency, that put pyrotechnic manufactures, that we knew and grew up with in the U.K., such as “Standard” and “Brocks”, in the shade.

Torrevieja and Pilar De La Horadada, between them, have some 19 concerts, both in theatre settings, and under the stars. Bowling, jousting, marching bands, cooking competitions, through to the art of bell ringing and lace making.

One of the best ways to find out what is on offer, at Torrevieja and Pilar, is to drop onto the Tourist Office web sites, where all the events are listed, or alternatively, check the Sol Times each week, where I will try to mention a few of the attractions.

In the City of Salt, on Friday 11th, is a concert of “Early Music” at The Palacio de la Mu’sica, starts at 8PM., with a “Latin Cultural Gala” at the Teatro Municpal. This event starts at 9PM. On Sunday, still at the Teatro Municipal, at 12 noon, will find the Coral Jose’ Hodar choir, accompanied by the splendid Torrevieja Town Band “Union Musical Torrevejense” Back to the wonderful setting of The Palacio de la Mu’sica, at 6PM., will find Finnish choir, “Parroquia Finladesa Costa Blanca, about to perform a Choral Concert, and it’s a freebie! Another free event at “The Palacio” is on Wednesday 16th, this time at 6PM.. It’s “Shirley Valentine”, organised and presented by the Swedish Ladies Association.

Down the N332 into Pilar, on October 11th., will find a tribute to Manolo Garcia, live music performed by “Ciudad Canalla”.

This one starts at 10.30PM, under the stars

in the Municipal Enclosure. The following day around noon, there is a street parade, with marching bands. Flower offering to the Virgin of Pilar in the Church Square at 7.30PM., with the evening drawing to a close, with a concert given by “La Frontera” and “Los Divosaurios”, at 11.30PM (Ish), again in the Municipal Enclosure.

Saturday, 12th., events, start early at 8AM, with the art of campanology at the Parish Church, but do remember to let go of the “Sally”, otherwise, as I did on a number of occasions, you will find yourself heading to the ceiling of the bell chamber. Can be painful. Also booked in for this morning, is the “Union Musical de Almoradi” marching band. There will be a Mass at 12 noon, honouring the Patron Saint the Virgin of Pilar.

The will be a Solemn Procession, at 7.30PM., leading of from the Church Square, followed by a firework display, in the “Rambla”, next to San Isidro neighbourhood.

It’s then, with ears ringing, back to the stage in Church Square, to listen and dance to orchestra “Athenas”, kicking off around 10.30PM..

To end this weeks entertainments, again in Pilar, is on Sunday 13th., where, during the morning and afternoon, there will be special prices for children at the funfair.

In the evening, in the Municipal Stockade, sorry, Enclosure, is the show “Los Musicales de mi Vida 2”, at 8PM, which the youngsters should enjoy.

Now, just remember what I said about “The Sally”. Marked for life I was.

Vivace rehearses for Handel’s “Messiah”

CAFE CONCERT ON Saturday in the face of abnormally high winds the seventh CAFÉ Concert was held at the Playa Grande Hotel in Puerto de Mazarron.

Since 2007 the concert has been dedicated to the fundraising for the new ambulance delivered to The Ayuntamiento in Mazarron in April this year, at a cost of 57600 Euros,. The ambulance will be administered by Cruz Roja and the money was raised through various events and donations.

The bulk of the money was obtained from the Concerts with a total over the years of 23626 Euros and the shortfall in the balance of payments met

by PALS who contributed some 8867 Euros and, who this year with the ambulance and the Lorca Earthquake donation a couple of years ago, now celebrate equipment purchased for local, health centres and emergency services a grand total that exceeds 250,000 Euros.

The CASFE Concerts have throughout the 7 years been sponsored and hosted by Costa Calida International Radio and their invaluable help is acknowledged with much thanks. The artistes over the years some 140 in number in giving freely of their services and musical expertise and talent are also to be thanked. As are those organisations including The Lions who over the years have worked alongside PALS and CCIR to make this a success.

However this is not the end of the CAFÉ Concerts. Plans are already underway to continue the annual music fest on behalf of another worthy cause and we hope that all our supporters will continue to enjoy the best of the local Mazarron areas talent in what has become the areas largest one day musical l event,.

Vivace is to give three performances of Handel’s “Messiah” in April next year with concerts in San Miguel Church, La Siesta Church and Iglesia del Colegio de Santo Domingo in Orihuela.

The mixed choir of around fifty voices with members from a variety of European countries, begin rehearsals for this popular work on 10 October and meet every Thursday from 7.15 until 9.30 at the Centro Social in San Miguel de Salinas.

A selection of music covering the story of the life of Christ, from this popular oratorio, from His birth to the resurrection and glorification in Heaven, has been chosen and will include a number of solo arias as well as choruses.

Handel composed the music for “Messiah” to a compilation of English texts taken from the King James Bible, the Psalms and the Book of common Prayer in 1741. It was first performed in Dublin on 13 April 1742 and in England almost a year later.

Vivace is a friendly choir directed by Tom Pargeter who welcomes new members to all vocal parts. The rehearsals will also include a selection of Christmas music to be performed in the newly renovated San Miguel Church in December and a joint presentation with a visiting Danish choir in the Spring.

Virtually everything we do is done by choice – OUR choice. Yes I am saying that being overweight is a choice. I know because I have been there. It wasn’t until I totally recognised AND accepted that my size was down to the past choices I had made, that I then chose to do something about it.

The amazing thing is, is once I had made that conscious choice I began to release the weight and to release it easily. That was over three years ago.

The benefits of releasing that excess weight (35 kilos – 5 ½ stones) which has stayed off, have been enormous!! Far bigger than a super-sized burger and chips!

Christmas is coming and it will be here sooner than you think!

Have you had a great summer and put a few extra lbs or kilos on? Is your positive selftalk telling you to do something about it in time for Christmas? Is your negative self-talk telling you, “Oh well might as well wait until the new year now!”

Tricky one isn’t it? Our self-talk can hinder or help us. It is up to us to choose which self-talk we are going to listen to and more importantly act upon. It is also up to us as individuals to take responsibility for our actions.

I heard today that a group of overweight people in America had successfully sued a large burger chain for serving oversize portions! Can you believe it? Their claim was that they put on weight because of the oversize portions. I was flabbergasted!!

It was their choice to order the largest burger on the menu and the accompanying large portions of extras that came with the meal AND what’s more, it was their choice to EAT

• Better health – which means a reduction in prescribed medications • Better financial health – eating healthily impacts on your finances far more than you realise • Feeling good – increased energy • Increased desire – to get up and do things • Increased confidence – when people pay you compliments as they see you releasing weight the psychological benefits kick in • Psychological benefits – you feel better, your confidence, self-esteem and self-worth increase – this has a knock on effect in other areas of your life such as relationships, work, family, exercise • You look good – clothes that fit you take on a new meaning and you stop hiding in dark coloured oversized clothing (which far from making you look slimmer as is believed – accentuate your size!!)

These are just some of the benefits of releasing excess weight, the list goes on………..

Of course, once I had totally recognised AND accepted as well as taken responsibility for being overweight, I then had to make another choice: the choice of taking action.

You see whilst taking the above step was a step in the direction, unless I did the next step of taking action, guess what would have happened? Correct!!! I would have stayed overweight- simple!

Taking action involves change. This change involves doing something - if you do nothing, nothing will change.

As a Personal Health and Wellness Practitioner and Transformational Coach, I am passionate about what I do, because what I do involves changing people’s lives. I work with people to enable them to release the pain they are carrying whether that is physical or emotional pain, and yes that includes the pain of being overweight.

So, back to Christmas is coming. At the time of writing there are ONLY 78 days, 11 hours and 40 minutes until Christmas 2013.

You have a choice to continue on the path you are on if you are carrying excess weight, and to carry the pain and misery that that causes, or you can choose to do something and take action and make this your best ever Christmas!

If you want this Christmas to be relaxed and enjoyable around food, the people you are with and you really want to feel better in yourself and in your health, then the time to commit to and to take action as well as take responsibility is NOW! Not January!

Most people find that there are small things that they didn’t think about until after the builders had finished construction.

Here are some, in no particular order, that they wish they would have added into their build: Charging plugs in the kitchen for items that may end up living there.

Full size broom cupboard to hide all the cleaning items away from sight.

Prewired security system Run wire and prepare roof for future solar panels.

Run conduit under your driveway just in case you need to run wiring or plumbing in the future.

Run a 2” pvc pipe from ground floor up to second floor, for any future wiring.

Put charging plugs in closets for charging a cordless vacuum.

Plan a specific place for your dog and/or cat food, treats, and bowls.

Make sure you have enough space to hang long clothes.

Enough plugs in the bathroom/bedroom.

You need more than you ever imagined!

Add a mosquito system. October is here, and so is the flu jab season! Temperatures are beginning to fall, especially at night, and when temperatures go down, fevers go up. To avoid the aches, pains and generally feeling terrible, follow these Cold and Flu Safety Tips: Wash your hands. You’ve heard it many times before, but washing your hands is the single most important way to stop the spread of flu. It is estimated that about 80% of infectious diseases are spread by touch.

Cover your nose and mouth when you sneeze or cough.

Don’t use your hands, unstead, use the crook of your elbow or a tissue. That way, the germs won’t get on your hands and get spread around.

Disinfect tabletops, doorknobs, remote controls, and toys.

Flu germs can live on surfaces for hours. Go disposable. If someone in the house is sick, consider switching to paper products, such as towels and cups, for a week.

Take care of yourself. Can eating healthy foods, getting enough sleep, and reducing stress help prevent flu? There is no proven answer, but doing so may help keep your immune system strong and more capable of fighting off a flu virus.

Fast Flu Facts: Flu is contagious a day before symptoms appear, and for up to 5 or 7 days after.

Flu viruses spread mainly through droplets made when someone coughs, sneezes, or talks.

Why Do I Need to Get Vaccinated Every Year?

‘The virus is sort of tricky in the way it reproduces from year to year, in that it shifts its chemical coating from season to season,’ explains Geoffrey A. Weinberg, MD, a pediatric infectious disease specialist and professor of pediatrics at the University of Rochester. “Even if you’ve been getting flu shots for several years you need to keep it up, because next year’s flu could be very different.”

For instance measles and chickenpox only take a couple of childhood immunisations to provide full protection, but those diseases are caused by only one strain of virus, and they don’t change.’ Says Weinberg.

How Well Will the Flu Vaccine Protect Me Against the Flu? Each spring, public health experts around the world predict which three flu strains are most likely to circulate and cause illness in the coming flu season. Based on their predictions, the flu vaccine is formulated to protect against those three or four strains.

When the experts have made a good match, the vaccine is up to 90% effective in healthy adults.

Even if the vaccine isn’t a perfect match it’s still worth getting, experts say. Each vaccine protects against three different flu strains, so chances are at least one of them is circulating in any given season. Plus, when you

get vaccinated against one strain of flu virus, your body makes antibodies that protect you against related strains, even if they’re not exactly the same.

When Do I Need to Get the Vaccine?

Get vaccinated as soon as the vaccine is available at your doctor’s surgery. Do not wait until cases of influenza are already in the community - Influenza is very contagious and travels very quickly.

The vaccine takes about two weeks to take full effect, so if your neighbour comes over coughing and sneezing and you haven’t had your flu jab, watch out!

Because experts are never sure exactly when in the flu season the first viruses will hit, earlier is better. Get the vaccine as soon as it is available and it should protect you through the whole flu season, even until March.

I’ve had the flu and it’s no big deal.

Then either you are a super-person, or you had a cold or respiratory infection. Flu is a big deal, it knocks you for six, and confines you to bed for maybe up to a week. It is not a virus that you can ‘tough out.’

And even if you are a super-person, the rest of us aren’t, so we will thank you very much to get the vaccine, and not infect the rest of us normal humans!

The vaccine gave me the flu.

You probably know at least one person who claims he or she came down with the flu days after getting a flu vaccine.

However, the vaccine wasn’t to blame for the ailment. “It’s a very commonly held myth, but it’s just that,” Weinberg says.

“It’s absolutely impossible scientifically and medically to get the flu from the inactivated vaccine shot. You can’t catch the flu from the vaccine, because the version of the virus used in flu shots is dead. In the nasal spray vaccine the virus is severely weakened, so it’s not likely to cause more than a few sniffles or sneezes. Chances are, your friend either had a bad cold or another respiratory infection, not the flu.’

Most side effects from the influenza vaccination are mild, like soreness at the site of the shot, a low-grade fever, or a little achiness. You’re actually far safer getting the vaccine then skipping it. “There’s a much higher rate of getting complications if you take your chances with the real disease than if you get immunised,” Weinberg says.

There are toxic levels of mercury in the vaccine.

There is a product called thimerosal, a mercury-containing preservative used in certain vaccines. All vaccines that are marketed for use in young children no longer contain thimerosal, but it is still found in some vaccines used in adults, including certain flu vaccines.

Researchers have studied thimerosal extensively, and they haven’t found any connection between the preservative and autism or any other serious health risks. But, if you’re worried, you can ask your doctor to use a thimerosal-free vaccine.

Specavers Opticas launches national campaign to collect 3,000 pairs of used glasses in three months for Lions Club Spain 10th October 2013

Today Specsavers Opticas are marking World Sight Day by launching a campaign to improve the sight of the world’s poorest people by collecting thousands of glasses to send to developing countries. They have set the ambitious target of collecting 3,000 pairs of glasses over a three month campaign to help those in Africa and India where people desperately need access to glasses.

After the glasses are donated in store they are sent to the Lions Club’s recycling plant in Alicante where they are first separated into single vision, bifocals, varifocals and sunglasses. They are then graded according to prescription strength, cleaned and boxed for distribution.

Finding the right size bra is often a problem for many women and it’s estimated that about 80% of women wear the wrong size. This is not healthy for your breasts - especially if the breasts are in a too tight bra. It also can be very uncomfortable.

Have someone measure around your chest with a tape measure, just under your breasts, and around the back. Make sure the tape measure rests flat on the skin and goes straight across your back. There is simply no substitute for being professionally measured.

A measurement CAN be done over the bra you are wearing AND over your T-shirt. However, If you plan on getting fitted, don’t wear a thick shirt like a sweatshirt or sweater. Also, make sure you wear a bra without padding when you attend the fitting. I am happy to offer you this free service and ensure that you are fitted correctly.

From personal experience I can say that I think more women would be happy about their breasts if they had a bra fitting done by a professional and purchased the right type of bra for their needs. Get fitted. And if you are concerned about sagging, find a comfortable underwire (they are out there) and you will see a tremendous difference in your appearance and your self esteem. I cannot tell you the number of times my customers have finally tried a properly-fitted bra who then stared at themselves in amazement, saying they didn’t realize how uncomfortable they had been with their bras until now.

It’s all things dance this week, with our recent DanceA-Thon, here at Casa La Pedrera, that raised a fantastic 1 640 euros for the AECC! - With that on my mind, I thought it would be a good idea to delve a little deeper into the Spanish world of dance and music.

When you think of the English folk dancing scene, one generally conjures up men and women dancing around with hankies! - Likewise here in Spain - many firsttime travellers think that the passionate flamenco as being Spain’s so-called “national” dance.

However, traditional Spanish music and dance is far more complex.

In fact, flamenco music didn’t even formally hit the Spanish music scene until around the beginning of the 19th century.

However there can be no dispute that Flamenco is the best-known Spanish dance and has eclipsed the performance of other Spanish dance forms outside of Spain. This week I will attempt therefore, to introduce you to other styles of Spanish dance, enriched

by Spain’s long and colorful history.

Spanish culture is jam-packed with traditional music and dance - in fact, at one point there were over 200 traditional dances documented in Cataluña alone!

Traditional music and dance vary as you travel from region to region. The traditional music of the Islas Canarias (Canary Islands), for example, boasts influences from the archipielago’s mysterious indigenous Guanche civilization while the bagpipe music of Galicia and Asturias speaks volumes about these northern regions’ rich Celtic heritage.

Spanish Dance, therefore, is a complex dance form and can be difficult to explain, but can be categorized in 6 groups: Flamenco(the most widely known) Folklore

(which we will discuss today), Classical Spanish Dance (“Estilización”), Eighteenth Century Dances, Ballet (Classical Dance), and Castanets.

We will start with Spanish Folklore!

Centuries old, Folklore is the most distinctive cultural expression of each region and through these beautiful dances, the people can express their uniqueness and proud cultural heritage.

One such as these, is the Jota, which dates back as far as the 18th century and is the national folk dance of Aragon.Jota is derived from Latin and means ‘jump’ which describes the lively, bouncy movements to the dance. It is a quick dance and the steps are similar to the waltz , however with much more variation.

Many of the people of Aragon are of Iberian descent and this part of the country has great Moorish influences hence some say that the dance is, in fact, of Moorish origin.

Nevertheless, there are many different variations of the dance depending on the region such we live in, which includes Valencia, and Murcia. In Valencia, funerals and wakes are an opportunity to dance the Jota as it is often performed in watching the dead. Perhaps, giving new meaning to “Dancing on someones grave” !

The dance is visual more than anything with dancers wearing traditional, regional costumes. Jota is typically danced in two’s as couples raise their hands above their heads playing castanets. I watched a couple dancing this ‘traditional dance’ on ‘You Tube’ and it was great to see both dancers, both male (yes the men too) and female, playing the castanets. There is even a commemorative stamp made of the dance which clearly shows both dancers playing them.

‘Strictly Line Up for 2013’ wee k 2

Opening this weeks show were newsreader Suzannah Reid and Kevin and their interpretation of Tango. Suzannah attacked this dance well and she showed good lines with a range of choreography. She still needs to work on her frame as she lost connection with her partner due to her frame being too loose. She received 31 from the judges and 7 from me.

Next out with their Charleston was Tony Jacklin & Aliona. This a very energetic dance for a 69 year old which was very difficult for him. Unfortunately all he managed to do was get through the routine and very little else as he had no charleston action at all. I awarded him a 2 and he received 13 from the judges.

Following were Natalie Gumede and Artem with a Waltz. This was very fluid and elegant exactly as a waltz should be. Just occasionally Natalie loses her frame shape which marred an otherwise excellent performance.

However, I don’t know why there was a head roll in the middle of the routine, it spoiled the choreography for me. I awarded her an 8 and the judges 34.

Next to dance were Dave Myers and Karen with an American Smooth Foxtrot. This was about as smooth as concrete, flat footed, plonky and totally without the smooth element. More Fred Flintstone than Fred Astaire! I gave him 2 and the judges 17.

Patrick Robinson and Anya then danced their Tango. Patrick portrayed the dance well, it was attacked and showed great concentration

but the performance contained both good and bad bits. Again caused by a poorly retained frame, his bottom was stuck out and he pushed his right shoulder forward instead of leading with his body. That said his timing and musicality were very good. The judges gave him 27 and I gave him 6.

Deborah Meadon and Robin then performed their Cha Cha Cha. Again as last week, Deborah was struggling with her choreography despite smiling throughout the performance. Technique was lacking through her feet, knees and hips and because she was lifting her feet from the floor she ended up with a plonky Cha Cha. She received 24 from the judges (which I thought was generous) and 4 from me.

Next out were Rachel Riley and Pasha with Salsa. This was nothing like Salsa should be, sexy, steamy and fluid. Instead it was lumpy and rushed. She was also fighting Pasha with the armography in that instead of relaxing the arms to allow the turns to happen she had too much tension which resulted in a struggle.

I awarded her 4 and the judges 20.

Vanessa Feltz and James then danced a Waltz. For me this was the same as last week good on the acting poor on the dance. She was plonky, with no frame, elegance glide or flow but it was a bit better than last week. I gave her 4 and the judges 23.

Julien MacDonald and Janette followed with Tango. This wasn’t Julien’s dance, it needs to be staccatto and sharp but ended up just

the opposite. He had his bottom stuck out, had no frame and was using his arms to lead instead of his body. I awarded him 3 and the judges 18.

Fiona Fullerton and Anton then performed a Cha Cha Cha. She started with some nice feet and ankles on her opening lines and was confident looking promising but again her nerves got the better of her and she faltered when she lost her choreography. She does have potential but will need to be able to handle her nerves to overcome this. The judges awarded 22 and I gave her 5.

Mark Benton and Iveta then danced a Salsa.

This was the most entertaining performance of the night, it was hilarious with fantastic facial expressions. There wasn’t much salsa but it was full of character and I would have given him a 10 for entertainment value. I awarded him 7 and the judges 22.

Sophie Ellis Bexter and Brendan then did the best performance of the night with their Charleston. Sophie looked like a flapper with excellent charleston action and some super lifts and tricks. She just lost a little energy towards the end of the performance but it was little wonder. I gave her a 9 and the judges 36.

Following were Ben Cohen and Kristina with a Waltz. Unfortunately this proved very difficult for Ben as the height differential between him and his partner is just too much to be able to cope with which is such a pity as there had been improvement from last week. His frame

was better although his bottom was still stuck out but he will need acting classes to go on. I awarded him a 4 and the judges 25.

Next were Abbey Clancy and Aljaz and a Cha Cha Cha. After her superb performance last week I expected more. I think the choreography got the better of her and she looked unsure when dancing especially on solo steps. Hopefully the confidence will improve as the weeks go on. I gave her 6 and the judges 30.

Closing the two hour show were Ashley Taylor Dawson and Ola with an American Smooth. His wife gave birth to a new baby boy in the week so he had his work cut out to fit everything in. He showed great characterisation of the dance with good lines and he moved well across the floor.

He needs to address his chin which he has a habit of tucking into his chest leaving him with a peculiar neckline. But a good performance for week 2. I gave him a 7 and the judges 32.

Ending up in the bottom 2 after the combination of the 2 weeks judges marks and this weeks public vote were: Tony and Aliona, Julien and Janette and the first to be eliminated by a unanimous vote were Tony and Aliona.

There are some definite contenders for the trophy have you spotted any yet? Let’s see what happens in the weeks to come. In the meantime come and join us at one of our classes but until next week keep dancing!

Ralph weighs more than an average three-year-old child and has already become too heavy for Pauline to lift. ‘He is just so big. You do not fully realise until you pick him up and he has quite an appetite,’ she said.

‘I have no idea how big he is going to get, it could be a ridiculous size but everyone loves him and he laps up the attention.’

Pauline is waiting on Guinness World Records to confirm Ralph as the biggest rabbit in the world after they changed their rules on measuring animals for size.

Ralph’s dad Roberto is also a previous record holder for the world’s biggest rabbit after weighting in at 35lb and measuring 3ft 1inches.

TV medium Derek Acorah, star of ‘Most Haunted’, visited Mrs Grant at her home in Sussex, believing the rabbit was ‘possessed.’

‘We are pretty sure our house is haunted by something or other, so Ralph went up to London with friends of ours to meet Derek Acorah,’ Pauline said.

‘They said it was pretty spooky and he had a good old chat with Ralph about the spirits in our house.

He seemed to think Ralph was channelling the spirit of a ghoul.

‘It sounds like a load of old nonsense but Ralph isn’t your average rabbit.’ she commented.

The Wrights acquired Splish and Splash in 1977, and were told that goldfish don’t live very long.

Thai broth with prawns & noodles Pour the stock into a large pan and bring slowly to the boil. Add the garlic and ginger. Reduce the heat, cover and simmer for 15 minutes.

While the stock is infusing, put the noodles in a heatproof bowl. Cover with boiling water and soak until just tender, about 5 minutes or according to the packet instructions.

Drain and rinse under cold water, then drain again.

Add the prawns to the infused stock and cook for 1 minute.

Add the spring onions, enoki mushrooms, mangetout, carrots and baby corn. Bring to the boil and remove immediately from the heat – this will only take about 1 minute.

Divide the noodles equally among four warmed serving bowls. Ladle over the hot broth and top with chopped coriander.

SERVES 4 1.2 litres/2 pints homemade or good-quality chicken stock cloves of 1 bulb garlic peeled and crushed 8cm/3½in piece fresh ginger peeled and grated 120g/4½oz vermicelli rice noodles 350g/12oz raw tiger prawns shelled 1 bunch spring onions trimmed and finely sliced 100g/3½oz enoki mushrooms trimmed 160g/5½oz mangetout trimmed and shredded lengthways 120g/4½oz carrots peeled and very thinly sliced 160g/5½oz baby corn cut into 3 at an angle handful of chopped coriander

TOP TIP

The vegetables in this broth need to be shredded very thinly as they are added raw and cook in the heat of the broth. Use a potato peeler or mandoline to slice the carrots as thinly as you can.

SERVES 4

500g/1 1/4lb baby new potatoes halved 2 red peppers, deseeded and cut into bite-size chunks 200g/7oz cherry tomatoes 3 courgettes trimmed and cut into bite-size chunks 4 garlic cloves small handful rosemary leaves finely chopped small handful thyme leaves finely chopped large handful basil leaves 1 tbsp pine nuts 30g parmesan cheese 1 tbsp olive oil 1 tsp groundnut oil 4 free-range skinless chicken breasts cut into bite-size pieces

~ MAIN COURSE ~

METHOD Preheat oven to 200°C/180C fan/ gas 6 Place the potatoes in a large, shallow, nonstick ovenproof dish.

Alternatively if you don’t have a dish large enough to hold all the vegetables, use two dishes, dividing the potatoes between them. Cover with foil and cook in the oven for 20 minutes.

Remove the dish or dishes from the oven and add the red peppers, tomatoes, courgettes, garlic, rosemary and thyme. Stir through to combine with the potatoes then return to the oven, and roast, uncovered, for a further 20 minutes or until the vegetables are tender. Stir the vegetables occasionally while roasting to prevent sticking.

While the vegetables are roasting, make the pesto. Place the basil, pine nuts, parmesan and olive oil in a food processor and blitz to a stiff paste.

Heat the groundnut oil in a pan over a medium heat. Add the chicken and stir-fry for 5–7 minutes or until it is cooked through. At the last minute, add the fresh pesto, stir and cover until you are ready to serve. Turn off the heat.

Peel the roasted garlic cloves, squash or roughly chop and mix back into the vegetables. Either mix the pesto chicken in with the vegetables before serving or spoon the roasted vegetables around the edge of a serving platter (with any juices too), place the pesto chicken into the middle and garnish with the basil leaves. Dish out individually among four plates.

Vanilla pannacotta with spiced rhubarb compote METHOD Soak the gelatine in cold water for 10 minutes until soft.

Put the cream, milk, golden caster sugar and vanilla bean extract into a pan and bring to the boil, then remove from the heat.

Squeeze out the gelatine leaves and stir them into the cream mixture until dissolved. Pour into a jug and divide between 4 dariole moulds. Cool, cover and chill for 3-4

MAKES 4 4 sheets of leaf gelatine 400ml/14floz double cream 200ml/7floz semiskimmed milk 100g/3½oz golden caster sugar 2tsp vanilla bean extract FOR THE SPICED RHUBARB COMPOTE Juice of 1 large orange 40g/1½oz caster sugar 1 piece stem ginger, finely chopped, plus 1tbsp syrup from the jar 1 cinnamon stick 1 star anise 6 black peppercorns 300g/10½oz rhubarb, trimmed and cut into 3cm (1¼in) chunks

hours or overnight. To make the compote, place the juice, sugar, ginger, syrup, cinnamon, star anise and peppercorns in a wide, shallow pan. Simmer, stirring, for 10 minutes until syrupy.

Add the rhubarb then reduce heat to low. Cover and cook for 5-6 minutes until tender. Remove from the heat and cool.

Dip the bases of the moulds in hot water to loosen, then turn out onto plates. Serve with the rhubarb compote.

Pete and I were feeling the lack of lunch as we left Torrecárdenas Hospital, so to combat this hollowness we pulled off the motorway and headed into a Bar which bears the name of the age at which one is traditionally supposed to receive the key of the door.

I ordered a Coke, a shandy and a plate of chips for 2. The barman fetched out a small bottle of Coke and a glass for Pete, then poured half of a small Fanta Limón into a wine glass for me, which he then topped up with beer. I wondered at the choice of a wine glass, concluding that he thought I was too ladylike to drink out of a tubo.

However, I took our tiny drinks back to our table, and awaited the arrival of the chips. I very much like the Spanish patatas fritas, irregular slices of real potato, usually with the skin still on, cooked in olive oil, and served dangerously hot.

As the waiter placed the plate of chips between us I was a tad unnerved by their uniform appearance - the Army would have been proud to produce such regimentally regular chips, but I had been hoping for something a bit more freestyle.

However, I was hungry, so I

hoisted the first chip mouthwards, all my chip tastebuds ready and waiting. Unfortunately, my tastebuds were under the impression that they were going to get real chips cut from genuine grown-in-the-ground potatoes, and fried in oil squeezed diligently from the fruit of the olive tree.

What they got was baked cotton wool, otherwise known as oven chips!

To say they were disappointed was an understatement, but hunger can overcome all manner of culinary shortfalls, so together we stoically demolished the chips, leaving a clean plate – clean because oven chips have no lubricating oil content to help them slide down the throat.

Meal over, I went to pay. ‘9.50€’ the waiter requested, shoving the till receipt towards me.

‘What!?’ I queried in Spanish.

He fixed me with a steady brown eyed stare.

‘9.50€ for half a Fanta Limón, a teaspoon of beer, a teeny weeny Coke and a stingey portion of cotton wool chips? - 9.50€! I reiterated, in a voice full of exclamation marks.

He shrugged, and re-emphasised the stare. ‘Si.’ I stared back with the steadiness of the righteous, and the frigidity of an Ice Queen.

It was an empasse. He won. I paid, but I exited with dignity. I come from a nation whose Admiral well and truly whupped the Spanish and their over-hyped Armada – so there!

Wined Me Up and Let’s Dance Every year I promise myself that I will not write about the new series of Strictly Come Dancing, and every year I do the exact opposite and cannot resist penning a few lines about Brucie and Co. It’s always the same story, with some of the new crop of celebrity masochists wowing us with their grasp of tripping the light fantastic, but more often than not, it’s the shenanigans of the others doing the complete opposite that grabs our attention.

These are the ones that are as adept at the Foxtrot, as Sumo wrestlers are to the long jump. But of course, this is what the programme is all about.

I am not a great fan of the show, but with the threat of castration hanging over me if I so much as look at the TV remote, I have either the choice of slinking away to my computer or sloping off to the pub. In the first instance I am told that I already spend far too much time at my desk, and in the

latter that we have enough booze in the house to float the Queen Elizabeth so why put money over the bar. I am therefore obliged to put slipping and sloping to one side and sit watching with a beer in my hand, while the dancers Tango, Jive, Waltz and Charleston their way across the dance floor and Sir Bruce struggles with the words on the autocue.

But I have to say that the appearance of Dave Myers on the programme – he of the Hairy Bikers fame – had me thoroughly glued to the TV throughout his brilliantly bonkers Cha Cha; which hitherto I had thought was the name of a Giant Panda at the London Zoo and not a dance. Dave came out of the blocks like a whippet connected to the mains and it was obvious by the huge grin on his face, that he was going to throw himself into the thing and enjoy the experience come what may. This was true entertainment and had me laughing out loud and holding my stomach . . . much like the time I prepared Dave’s recipe for lamb tagine with eggs, although that was probably the cook not the recipe.

Show number two will have been screened by the time this goes to press, but I sincerely hope that Mr Myers will have survived the viewers vote and be with us for many more weeks to come. He was a welcome breath of fresh air and will have me actually looking forward to Strictly from now on, which is totally new territory for me.

And talking about dancing;

we recently had one of the best evening’s entertainment for some time when our favourite entertainer Woody, played the New Tavern in San Miguel. The sort of music he plays has that ‘must get up and boogie’ quality that is so appealing to people of my vintage. No not jitterbugging thank you very much, but classic 50’s and 60’s rock’n roll with a heavy emphasis on Woody’s speciality . . . the music of Buddy Holly.

It takes a lot to get me up to dance - usually two bottles of house white - but typically, once I am up and running it’s difficult to get me to sit down again. Not that I am a great dancer and certainly no Fred Astaire - more of a Fred Flintstone if I’m honest. And have you noticed that when there is live entertainment, everyone who gets up to go to the bar or visit the khazi, does so in rhythm, popping their fingers and swaying, they glide across the room in time to the music. These are usually the ones who shy away from the actual dance floor though.

But Woody’s music is from my era and takes me back to those Mecca and Top Rank days when I would schmooze and gyrate with the best of them in my three piece made to measure Jack Album suit and floral kipper tie. Yeeeah baby.

The story of El Raro the hero of Alqueria has been passed down through generations of Villagers. Both the Newcomers and the Hill People have claimed him as their own. It is one of the many reasons why barrio rivalry is so intense.

Rogelio Jiminez or El Raro made his name during the Spanish War of Independence where he led a guerrilla band fighting the occupying French.

Whether El Raro did much fighting is a point which historians have long puzzled over. Reports of his presence at various battles have put him safely on the sidelines offering advice but very little else. He came to prominence at La Batalla de la Cabra Sonriente.

Again evidence of Los Raros as his band were known, having fought hand to hand with the French or even been within a thousand metres of them is very sketchy to say the least. They did however loot part of the French baggage train rejected by others as having no military interest.

The cases, trucks, and sacks abandoned by the French contained the clothes of the officers wives including those of Fifi, Joseph Napoleon Bonaparte’s favourite mistress. Raro and his men spent many hours giggling around their camp fire as they paraded in the captured clothes. Fifi’s corset was taken back to Alqueria as a trophy where it resides in the Pueblo’s museum to this day. It is a fine silk whalebone garment inscribed in golden thread, ‘For my big French

Boney’.

We have some idea as to the calibre of El Raro from military documents.

When the Guerrillas were integrated into the Spanish Army his proficiency report simply read. “Can ride a horse, not well but adequately.” As to his bloodline one clue exists. Estefanía La Promiscua, a contemporary of El Raro claimed in her memoirs that he had a birthmark in the shape of a crescent moon on the inside of his left thigh.

How the lady had such detailed knowledge of El Raro’s thigh is perhaps something we should draw a veil over.

Birthmarks can be the result of minor genetic disorders. Someone with a similar mark may well share El Raro’s lineage.

For a definitive answer to El Raro’s barrio allegiance Dr. Enzo Matanzamas undertook the search for the crescent shaped birthmark.

Many came forward. Some birthmarks were crudely faked on with lipstick while other industrious individuals had them tattooed on. Only one was genuine and shaped correctly. It was Izar, Manuela’s daughter and of the Hill People’s barrio.

Whether Izar will turn out to be the hero of Alqueria like her esteemed ancestor only time will tell.

Do you still have the magic? Not the magic that saws someone in half or turns a silk scarf into a dove. I could never see the point in that one anyway, how would you feel if you said the wrong thing and that expensive new scarf suddenly flew off, never to be seen again. Quite inconvenient really. No not that sort at all; Roald Dahl once said that we should watch everything with our eyes wide open to the magic that’s around us, otherwise we would never find it because magical things are hidden in strange places.

I like that sort of magic, you know, the sort that makes things a wonderful mystery and gives us things to consider when we have lots of time on our hands, like on long dark evenings, or while we are waiting for the Town Hall to send someone to sort out the problem with your water connection! The problem of course now is that the magic is too easily explained away when that famous phrase, “Lets Google it!” is uttered. I’m all for the internet and technology, but what happened to the mystery?

Bigfoot. It’s supposedly a large hairy creature which is a cross between a human and, well, something else. I suppose if you picture Robbie Coltrane as Hagrid in Harry Potter, then you get the idea. But now, the Google has reports that Bigfoot exists and that the mystery is no more. Listen, I don’t want to know, in the same way I don’t want to know about the Bermuda Triangle-or indeed any other Barry Manilow songs. I like to wonder where the magic is rather than have it thrust under my nose.

No, the imagination is fantastic and needs to be helped along, rather than it being replaced by fact. Look at the search for alien life: imagine if we found it and those aliens that were supposed to be interesting, multiple limbed blobs turned out to be a race of Tax Accountants! Firstly, what a disappointment after all those years of Star Trek and secondly, what on earth would Dr. Who do then?

But my point is, maybe sometimes it’s better to spend our time looking for the magic rather than finding it because, once we know how they saw the person in half, the trick will never again make us go “Wow!”. Imagine a world without wow!

The 2010 World Cup Final between Spain and Holland in South Africa was watched by a worldwide television audience of 900 million people; amazingly this figure doesn’t include anyone that watched in pubs, clubs and outdoor events so the true figure was significantly higher as watching football is a social experience. I remember watching the match at a bar in Bedar with scores of others.

Over 2 years, a record number of 204 countries attempted to qualify for the 31 spots available in 2010 (the 32nd was given to the hosts). It was all so different in 1930 at the first tournament held in Uruguay; this was an invitation event that attracted just 13 countries. Only 4 European teams took part as the 3 week sailing time across the Atlantic was deemed too long by most of Europe. Uruguay was invited to host the inaugural finals as they had won the last two competitions in 1924 and 1928 at the Olympics. Uruguay did it again and beat Argentina 4-2 to become the first ever World Cup Champions.

Football started as a very British affair, the first ever international match was played between Scotland and England in 1872 and ended as a 0-0 bore draw. Then in 1883/84 the British Home Championships started; played between England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. It was the first ever international competition with Scotland beating Ireland 5-0 in the final.

Sadly this competition was stopped 100 years later after the

1983/84 series. The annual England V’s Scotland fixture was also stopped in 1989 though this year the fixture was played again at Wembley and England won 3-2. Over the years England has won 46 times, Scotland 41 with 24 draws.

In 1900 and 1904 football was played as a demonstration sport at the Olympics. FIFA was formed in 1904 but struggled to create an international competition outside of the Olympics.

At the 1908 London Olympics football became an official sport and Great Britain won with the team made up of amateurs.

Great Britain won again in 1912.

Sir Thomas Lipton, founder of the famous tea brand set up an international competition in 1909 with each country sending their best club side to represent them. The English FA snootily declined so alongside the likes of Juventus and Zurich, Sir Thomas invited a team from Durham made up of coal miners called West Auckland to represent Britain. In true fairy tale fashion the Brits won 2-0 in the final. Two years later in 1911 they were back and in what would now be a front page upset; beat Juventus 6-1 in the final to retain the trophy. Sadly the trophy was stolen in 1994 from the West Auckland Working Mens Club where it had been displayed since 1911.

FIFA then decided the Olympics would be the stage for footballs world championships and Belgium won in 1920. 1934 was the second ever World cup and was held in Italy, this time teams had to qualify and 32 teams were whittled down to 16 for the finals. Uruguay have the sad distinction of being the only team ever not to have tried to defend their 1930 title as they refused to travel in retaliation for most Europeans boycotting 4 years earlier. Italy became champions after an extra time goal beat Czechoslovakia 2-1.

Also absent were the 4 British teams as then as now the FA thought they knew better. Charles Sutcliffe of the FA stated that the Home Championships were ‘a far better world championship than the one to be staged in Rome!’

Today (Thursday) I was reading about what is news in the computer world simply because I felt a bit like a blind dart’s player. The darts being pieces of information that are relevant and the board being yourselves. So as I read, I noticed an article on botnets. Never coming across that term before it caught my interest so I read up on it and now pass a ‘decoded’ version on to you.

The term BotNet is a contraction from the words Robot and Network (also read Internet). Robby the robot, from the Space Family Robinson series, isn’t anywhere to be seen, which from a sci-fi enthusiast’s perspective is a bit of a downer! These robots are malicious programs thaat have been designed as a type of malware that allows an attacker to take control over an affected computer and use it, without your knowledge, to do any number of illegal activities.

These bots are designed by clever people (Bot Masters, as they have been named) to provide, to potential paying clients, any of a number of services some of which include denial-of-service attacks, creation or misuse of SMTP mail relays for spam (see Spambot), click fraud, mining bitcoins, spamdexing, and the theft of application serial numbers, login IDs, and financial information such as credit card numbers (all of which will be covered in the next article).

Bots sneak onto a person’s computer in many ways and are often spread across the Internet by searching for vulnerable, unprotected computers to infect. When they find an exposed computer, they quickly infect the machine and then report back to their master. Their goal is then to stay hidden until they are instructed to carry out a task.

After a computer is taken over by a bot, it can be used to carry out a variety of automated tasks, including the following: 1) Sending spam, viruses and spyware; 2) Stealing personal and private information such as credit card numbers, bank credentials and other sensitive personal information, and send it back to

the malicious user; 3) Denial of Service by attacks against a specified target. Cyber-criminals can then extort money from Web site owners, in exchange for regaining control of the compromised sites. A similar type of attack was the threat of fines from the FBI or GUARDIA not long back! More commonly, however, the systems of everyday users are the targets of these attacks – for the simple thrill of the bored.

4) Clickfraud which is where fraudsters use bots to boost Web advertising billings by automatically clicking on Internet ads and you get the ‘credit’ for increased interest, which may mean get unsolicited junk mail in your Inbox (thank goodness for “Thunderbird” and Filters)!

It is estimated that over one million (1,000,000) computers on the USA are compromised and if you go to www.canducomputing.comoj.com you will find a link to a 4 minute podcast about a woman who’s life was devastated by criminals who accessed her machine.

Before we go any future down the path of doom and gloom, you should know that bot’s and botnet’s were originally designed for, and still used today, to ensure the security of major organisation’s networks, and in a very familiar format are used voluntarily and happily by a great many of us. I’m referring to P2P “peer to peer” networks. If you have ever used “iMule”, “Bit/uTorrent” or any of these other P2P programs, you are using a Bot on a BotNet. These programs and the use that they were designed for, despite what anti-piracy organisations claim, are NOT illegal! It is the illegally (without your knowledge or consent) installed programs that are a threat.

One of the highlights of Thursday’s team game was two eagles; Terry Oliver with a two on the par 4 twelfth and Jim Budd scoring a three on the par 5 sixteenth.

A waltz, 1-2-3 to score, played in threeballs was the format for the competition. Winning with 79 points were Hylton Smith, Brian Isles and Ali Mahmud.

Second were Eddie Vaughan, Rosalie Fardon and Andy Spectre (75) with John Lally, Margaret Budd and Jarlath Staunton (74) third.

TMGS Today we played at the excellent course of Campoamor and once again, the fairways were very good, the green a little on the slow side – but it is the time of the year. However, looking at the results, it appears that many enjoyed the track and 6 people achieved or bettered their handicaps and on this course, that is an achievement.

There are many stories from the day, some that can be printed and some that belong in Penthouse or for the younger readers Nuts. However, it was a delight to see Peter Wells achieve a new moniker of Sherlock Five Putts. Sherlock comes from his words of wisdom when he slams the putt some 10 yards past the hole of “Oh, I hit that a little bit too hard” and then does the same on the way back and says the same word. Senility.

Talking of senility, we had a certain member from the course who will NOT remain nameless and goes by the name of Ray Scott who scored an UNimpressive 28 ( on his own course) and it could have been less had

GROUPS GALORE! After an exciting trip to Tabarca at the end of the summer, which was enjoyed by all of the members who went along, our first meeting of the new season was held on 30th September.

At this general meeting, instead of having a speaker, a ‘groups’ fair took place. The morning was dedicated to activity groups displaying what was on offer for members, outside of the monthly meetings.

Although our web site explains activities, some members do not have access to the site on a regular basis, so the fair was an excellent way of showing how we cater for most interests and many new members went away

with plans to join one or more groups.

At the meeting our President, Penny Godfrey, was delighted to announce the appointment of Bob Hill as U3A Ambassador.

Bob, a previous chairman, is an excellent choice to undertake this new role, which involves close liaison with the Town Hall and representing us on the new Cultural Committee. We know he will do well.

Our next meeting will be on Monday the 28th November at the CMO building, Torrevieja, near the Habaneras Commercial Centre. Doors open at 10 a.m. with the meeting starting at 10.30. Everyone welcome, so please join us.

MAZARRON FC 0 SANGONERA LA VERDE CF 1

Sangonera went to the top of the Primera Autonomica with an underserved 1-0 victory at the Estadio Municipal against a Mazarron team who must still be wondering how they failed to win this game.

The tactics employed by Sangonera were cynical and have no place at this lower level of Spanish football. They targeted Mazarron’s star striker Jose Ruben and their players fell to the ground dramatically almost every time Ruben was in their vicinity. Their blatant playacting, bordering on cheating, was obvious to everyone at the game with the exception of Senor Don Harkaoui, the referee.

Ruben was finally sent off 10 minutes before full time after yet another theatrical swallow dive by a Sangonera defender when challenged by Mazarron’s Pescao with Ruben seemingly only a nearby onlooker. The sending off created mayhem on the pitch, with Mazarron players rightly incensed both by the behaviour of the Sangonera players and the ineptitude of the referee. At the final whistle there appeared to be a mass brawl between the two sets of players as they left the pitch and it was quite some time before the referee and his two assistants were able to retire to the safety of their dressing room accompanied by Mazarron Manager, Antonio Lorente.

As for the game itself Sangonera took the lead in

the first minute when young goalkeeper Ruben could only fumble a seemingly harmless header from Miguel Angel Gimenez over the line. Mazarron should have equalised after 16 minutes when Jose Ruben outpaced the Sangonera defence only to see his shot saved by the onrushing keeper.

Three minutes later, Tico’s free kick found Chema at the far post and his shot was deflected

by Ruben towards goal only to see the excellent Sangonera keeper tip the ball onto his own cross bar.

Ten minutes before half time, another free kick from Tico was touched on by Pescao and Juanillo controlled the ball cleverly before seeing his shot go just wide of the post.

Cecilio and Jose Da were second half substitutes for Mazarron but Sangonera could have increased their lead after 50 minutes after a mistake by Juan Andreo again let in Miguel Angel Giminez but he shot wide with only Ruben to beat.

Alcaraz hit a tremendous shot from 30 yards just wide but the flow of the game was constantly interrupted by Sangonera’s tactics and a flurry of bookings by a referee who had totally lost control of the game and on a number of occasions had to be helped out by his assistants.

Eurogolf, La Marquesa 53 players took part in the October Monthly Medal and Millennium Cup on Thursday 3 October 2013 at our home course of La Marquesa. To be eligible for the Millennium Cup you must have won a competition during the 2012/3 season i.e. Monthly Medal, Stableford or Annual Competitions.

The weather for the time of the year is still fantastic although somewhat humid, long may it last (the heat, not the humidity).

The results were as follows:

elOurplantio competition on Tuesday 1st October was a Medal/ Ford, the front nine played as a medal game and the back nine as a Stableford. This is a challenging game in as much as most members get the scoring wrong, myself included.

The weather was superb, I think Spain has forgotten that its supposed to Autumn, it was like playing a golf match in August with the temperature in excess of 30 c. Tuesday also marked the last Competition of the year to qualify for points

LO CRISPIN GOLF SOCIETY Alenda Golf Course 02.10.13 For a change this week instead of our usual Stableford, we played a team game 6x6x6 medal. This format requires one person to score on the first 6 holes, 2 persons to score on the next six holes and 3 to score on the last six holes. Each team was carefully grouped so as to have a fairly even handicap and everyone thought on starting out that there would be no pressure with four people to help. AD Pliego vs Sporting Mazarron Camposol 2-1 PLIEGO, Sunday, September Sporting that dominated. goal will fall on the other side.

29th at 18:00. Sporting against one of leaders in the league. The game started from Sportings side very weak. Pliego was sharper in the duels. The 2nd ball was won each time by the midfield of Pliego. Therefore was the normally creative midfield of Sporting increasingly walking behind the facts. Sporting could not get a grip on the match. In the 22nd minute was 1-0 headed in from a corner. This seemed the signal for Sporting to play football.

And in the last minute of the first half came the 1-1. It was a bad pass by the Right Back of Pliego and Moha responded attentive and could shoot the ball into an empty goal . With this gift for Sporting ended the first half. The second half was totally different it was

by Dani. This just seemed to get a good effect because within 5 minutes Dani got the chance to 1-2. But the keeper reacted well. The game was totally changed and went only one way. Then left striker Moha was one on one with the goalkeeper and then it was striker Dani who came on one with the goalkeeper.

But still it was the goalkeeper of Pliego who won. Until 75th minute, a brilliant pass from Moha on right striker Fran, Fran ran straight to the keeper and ...... again the goalkeeper made the fantastic save.

And that was so true because in the 92nd minute it was Pliego with a free kick from the rightside, the ball was not properly caught by the goalkeeper of Sporting. Edu left the ball loose and there was a player of AD Pliego to shoot the ball into the empty goal.

This is so very annoying ¨ says coach Oosterhof. We get so many chances, but you have to make a goal or 2. But that’s not the worst, we didn´t reached our level in this game.
