The V MaratónFotográfico de Murcia turned the City streets red Over 216 participants, each kitted out with a distinctive red tabard, roamed the streets of the capital, camera in hand, seeking to capture an image that would win them the 1,000 euro prize.

record 1.2 million euros compensation

A record 1.2 million euros compensation awarded to the parents of a physically handicapped baby. The Justicia condemned the gynaecologist for failing to detect the problem and set the compensation to take into account the pain suffered by the parents.

The contest began at 10:00 am in the Plaza de Santo Domingo, where entries were confirmed, and information given on suggested routes, as well as the all-important topics on the images to be taken, which had been kept secret until then.

The Audiencia Provincial de Madrid set the record compensation to the parents of a girl born in Hospital Los Arcos del Mar Menorwith serious malformations that had not been detected by ultrasound.

Aftera group photo participants had several hours to enjoy the competition. The day ended with a closing ceremony, and a short break for contestants to enjoy a ‘picnic’, courtesy of the Rincón de Pepe.

The Court increased the compensation by more than half a million euros from the figure set at a previous trial, which condemned the gynaecologist who treated the family in private and in Los Arcos, for malpractice.

first maxillofacial intervention The Hospital de Molina has conducted its first maxillofacial intervention using ‘Google Glass’. The three surgeons involved in the operation were able to interact remotely with specialists. Doctors Pedro Peña, Juan Francisco Piqueras and Alejandro Lópezparticipated in a live broadcast maxillofacial operation using the new Google Goggles in the hospital in Molina de Segura. This is the second operation using the device; the first, and also the first globally, was in June on Pedro Guillén from Murcia. The company ‘Droiders’ who collaborated with the doctors with this new technology, said it was the first time that maxillofacial surgery has been relayed through these glasses. ‘Google Glass’ uses glasses with built-in cameras to visually relay the operation being performed by the three doctors in the operating room to an audience of specialists in the vicinity. The dental assistants watched the operation in real time and discussed questions or information about the intervention, successfully performed on a 70 year old patient who had no natural teeth in his top jaw. Using a novel technique of computer-guided implantology, the patient, at the end of the operation, returned home with all teeth replaced. The intervention is part of the Diagnostic and Treatment Course, based on Directly Guided Three Dimensional Surgery, organised by the Clínica Dental del Hospital de Molina, and which is attended by dentists from all over Spain. laverdad.es

The Association Defensor del Pacientebrought the case to court in Madrid because the insurer is headquartered in the capital, but the negligence occurred, and the affected parents are, in Murcia. The girl was born on March 6, 2009 with serious malformations that the family prefers not to divulge. The parents had to leave their jobs to care for the child. The doctor was criticised in court for making an ultrasound examination at week 18 of gestation which the Sociedad Española de Ginecología y Obstetricia advises should be done between weeks 20 and 22. In addition, the judge lamented the ‘lack of professional qualification’ of the gynaecologist ‘to perform prenatal diagnostic by ultrasound.’ To explain its decision to increase the compensation, the court emphasised that ‘we must empathise - putting ourselves as close as possible to the situation of the parents of the child, and understand the life of total dedication they must give to a daughter who is deformed and sick. The Court noted that ‘the situation of the applicants can be synthesised in suffering and dedication, because they carry the moral and mental suffering every day when contemplating the deformed body of their daughter, and are driven to give their daughter their time and dedication every day, even sacrificing their work or profession Moreover, all this takes place during a period of time that is not calculable, as the life expectancy of the child could not be calculated, though there was an estimated timeframe of twenty years.’ The court decision recognised that the girl suffers not only physical deformities but also mental disability. ‘The compensation must take into account the suffering of the child throughout her life, and the daily dedication of the parents and their ongoing suffering.’ The Court rejected the insurer ‘s arguments, which called for a reduction of compensation imposed by the District Court, and instead supported the arguments of Ignacio Martínez, Abogado of the AsociaciónDefensor del Paciente, who represented the parents. laverdad.es

Rescued from the deep The Armada (Navy) has undertaken an underwater rescue exercisein the Arsenal, from the submarine ‘Galerna’.Fifty soldiers participated in the mock rescue of the submarine crew. This was the first exercise of five to be conductedby the Armada Española. The manoeuvres are in collaboration with the hyperbaric medical staff of the Centre for Navy Diving (CBA), and members of mobile Intensive Care Units (ICU). While submerged, the five crew members donned special suits, stored in the Galerna. Each of them in turn then entered an internal lock, where they inflated the suit, and rose to the surface. The submarine was perched about twenty yards away from the MuelleNorte de la Base de Submarinos. After the rescue of the crew the exercise by the Military to refloat the vessel began. Divers from the rescue vessel Neptune connected air hoses to the sub’s ballast tanks and pumped air from the salvage and rescue ship in order to expel water from the ballast. This gradually lightened the weight of the submarine, allowing it to rise to the surface. The exercisewas performed to train personnel in submarine rescue and salvage, and to improve coordination in such operations. laverdad.es

Lorca and Fortuna suffer earthquakes, but no damage has been reported. Lorca was struck first, with a tremor measuring 2.6 in the early morning.

This was followed in the afternoon by a tremor of 2.1 in Fortuna. The quake, which was centred at a depth of 8 kilometres, was also felt in Molina de Segura, according to the InstitutoGeográficoNacional and the Centro de Coordinación de Emergencias. The Lorca tremor was widely felt by the population and, had its epicentre in southeastern Lorca at a depth of six kilometres, and reached intensity grade III. The Ayuntamiento of Lorca said the location of the epicentre was near the Hospital General Rafael Méndez, in the Torrecilla area. Several concerned citizens contacted the Consistorio, reporting tremors on the Avenida Juan Carlos I, the main through road of the city, The Servicios de Emergencias, the Guardia Civil, the PolicíaNacional and the Policía Local were also informed of the incident. The block of flats had been converted into a ‘den’, with tight security. The police have been amazed at the transformation of the building, in the barriada de Las Seiscientas, into a base for drug trafficking, with heavy security in place to resist police raids. The investigation began three months ago with the onset of criminal activity by two clans known as ‘El regalitos’ and ‘El chivas’, who adapted three floors of the building for the sale of drugs, and installed heavy duty security measures. With the deployment to CalleGreciaof more than sixty officers from the Unidades de Estupefacientes, de Prevención y Reacción y de PolicíaCientífica, the arrest of 5 suspects was achieved, followed later by the arrest of a sixth person. All suspects are men, are aged between 19 and 28 years old and police files on them show numerous precedents for similar crimes. According to information provided by the police, 450 doses of cocaine, 150 doses of marijuana, hash and 43 buds, several precision scales and other tools to manipulate drugs were seized. According to reports from the Comisaría, which is fronted by Alfonso Navarro, ‘surprisingly, the neighbours applauded the police intervention.’ Apparently it is usual for the neighbours to shout abuse at the police, and support for the drug dealers. laverdad.es

Man accused of killing his cousin Man accused of killing his cousin has been foundguilty. The Judge ruled in the Audiencia Provincial that Antonio Gálvez, accused of killing his cousin in an orchard in Patiño in January 2010, is guilty of murder. However, there is an element of doubt surrounding the case; there is a contradiction in the answers to two of the questions that were asked. And although the Presidenta del Tribunal, MagistradaMaríaJover, made an attempt to solve the problem on the spot, the Defence madeit clear that after the public reading of the judgment, ‘the verdict can not be changed.’ The jury accepted as fact that Antonio Gálvez left home about five in the afternoon of January 30 to go to a garden in the hamlet. According to the verdict, he did not intend to pick some oranges for his cousin, as was claimed. Before arriving at the gardenhe met his cousin, who was carrying on his back a machine sprayer.

José Antonio Galvez, who had a drinking problem, and had been admitted into a mental hospital in 1991, had a discussion with his cousin, which ‘for reasons unexplained, was not friendly.’ The jury did not accept that, at the time of the altercation, José Antonio lifted the rod from the sprayer to hit the accused, who tried to defend himself with his hands. Instead, the jury believed that Antonio pushed his cousin, but doubted that Jose Antonio fell backwards, because otherwise the sprayer would have caused some marks on his back. The court held that when José Antonio was lying on the floor, his cousin Antonio kicked him causing multiple injuries to his face, a broken rib and the loss of several teeth. The jurors believed that Antonio’s actions were not driven by a ‘spirit of defence’, as he had no injuries whatsoever after the confrontation. The defence expert asserted that José Antonio did not die because of asphyxia ‘caused by the inhalation of his own blood,’ but that on the contrary, claimed that the defendant had intended to end the life of his cousin and that therefore ‘squeezed his neck with an object that has not been found.’ MaríaJover accepted that ‘immediately after the event took place he called his relatives to call an ambulance and so assist the injured and prevent death.’ The verdict, however, may be unsafe, as two of the 26 questions appear to have caused confusion to the jurors, who had different opinions on the same topic. The questions are in relation to the matter of Antonio Galvez’ intention to defend himself. The Prosecutor requested the imprisonment of the defendant, to which the Defence objected, saying that ‘Antonio Galvez has always been available to the court and does not present a flight risk.’ His lawyer, José María Caballero Salinas, did not rule out an appeal to set aside the verdict. laverdad.es

PRE CHRISTMAS GRAND FAIR

It was back in June 2010, that my jottings had an “Exclusive” tag attached, by the editor at the time, Claire, as Sol Times was the first newspaper to report the dreadful murder of Irmgard Fieres, aged 61, who ran La Corona Bar / Restaurant in the village of Pinar de Campoverde. The accused, identified only by K.H.H., was suspected at the time of murdering his girlfriend and partner in the business, Irmgard, by attacking her in the kitchen on the premises. An autopsy showed that she had been killed by repeated blows to the head. K.H.H., denied being involved. The jury has now found

the accused guilty as charged, with the public prosecutor asking for a 20 year sentence, and for a payment of 120, 000 euros, in compensation. What I can “Exclusively” reveal that after the crime, K.H.H., before being visited by the men in green, had thrown himself under a hot shower,

in the hope of removing any incriminating evidence of a deed most foul. Unfortunately, for K.H.H., a minute spot of blood was discovered by a member of the forensic team, within the accused ear canal. This was sent away for analysis, and was later found to match exactly, the D.N.A. of the victim.

Remembrance is a very personal thing

For members of The Royal British Legion, wherever we are in the world Remembrance is a part of our lives. The phrase “We will remember them” said at the start of every meeting is an opportunity for everyone present to remember people lost or injured in conflicts over many years. Here in Spain, we should also remember all those Spanish people who lost their lives during Spanish conflicts. Members of the RBL Zurgena Branch, have dedicated a Tree of Remembrance in La Alfoquia as a point of remembrance for everyone. Somewhere, where we can all go on any special day, to give thanks for the sacrifice of family members and friends on our behalf. The Alcalde of Zurgena Snr. Luis Raz Garcia planted the tree on Thursday 3rd October and said,

“I am pleased to be asked to be a part of this Act of Remembrance and I fully support the idea of communities becoming closer”. also in the picture are Snr. Trebalon Fernandez and Jim Simpson from the Council in Zurgena, and Mr. Ken Davies, Chairman of the Royal British Legion Zurgena and District Branch. Many other members of the Branch attended the ceremony. All hoped that the Tree of Remembrance would help to bring the two communities of Spanish and Ex-Pats closer together.

Tradition was served by Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, conducting the ceremony, which was only fit as Prince George’s great-granny, Queen Elizabeth II, is the church’s supreme governor. Another tradition was continued – the holy water is from the River Jordan and the lily font was created by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. In recognition of George’s late grandmother, Diana, Princess of Wales, Will and Kate chose her close friend Julia Samuel.

‘Will and Kate chose a mixture of friends, advisers and family as godparents to guide their son during his spiritual life. Perhaps the biggest surprise is the choice of the Earl Grosvenor. The 22-year-old heir to the Duke of Westminster. Things You’ll Need ° Pumpkin ° Sharp knives ° Large spoon

1 Lay out the newspaper on your workspace and set the pumpkin on top. It is a good idea to use several layers. The newspaper will protect your workspace and make cleanup much easier. 2 Cut a hole in the top of the pumpkin, around the stem, using the knife. When cutting the hole, angle the knife to create a cone shape. This will prevent the top from falling in when you place it back on the pumpkin. Pull on the stem to remove the piece that you cut out. Set this piece aside; it will be the lid for your jack-o’-lantern. 3 Pull all of the guts out of the pumpkin using your hands and the spoon. Use the spoon to scrape around the inside walls of the pumpkin. Be very sure that you get everything out of the inside if you plan on lighting your jack-o’lantern with a candle. 4 Draw a scary face on the pumpkin using a pencil. You can draw the face of a popular monster or come up with your own terrifying design. If you are drawing your own design, think pointy, slanted eyes and big fangs, and feel free to put your own creative spin on the pumpkin. 5 Cut out the pieces of your pumpkin’s face using a sharp knife. Remove these pieces and discard them. 6 When you are finished carving your pumpkin, put a lighted candle inside and replace the lid. An attractive craft fair in the middle of Alicante

If you fancy the idea of getting really exclusive but not expensive Christmas presents before the rush, take a trip to Alicante town centre. There, in the Avenida Federico Soto, more or less in front of the Corte Inglés, some 40 stalls with real “Artesanía de Autor” work will set up shop. Real craft work, because “Artesania de Autor” means that the person selling the work is the person who made it. Nothing imported and nothing from a factory. The regional craft association Amata has been holding real craft fairs all over Spain these last twenty years and has built up a large circle of aficionados in the craft world. Amata selects participants after looking at the quality of their work and considering how they will fit in - the market should not have too many people selling the same sort of material. A good variety of ceramics, leatherwork, paper, silver, macramé, wood, original jewelry, fabrics, forged iron, handbags, cushions, wooden toys is to be found on one of their markets. This market in the middle of Alicante is especially interesting because many of the participants will be working at their stall. Watch Chema bind books, José carve bone and horn to make spoons or costume jewelry, Thomas painting T-shirts, Diego decorate boxes with filigree paper and Ramón weave intricately patterned buttons with Celtic motifs. Often they can add to or change part of their design to suit the taste or need of a potential customer - a name, another colour or perhaps a slightly different sized. Many of the pieces to be seen in this craft fair are the sort of thing you will see in expensive art galleries where you pay a lot more. Here you can buy directly from the craftsman or woman - cheaper, more fun and a lot more interesting. And the people in the stalls much prefer to see where their lovingly made articles will find a new home. Most of these people choose this sort of work because they enjoy making something original, but they have to earn a living, which is why Amata spends its time holding markets to which it hopes to attract people who are really interested in this sort of work. The Craft Market will be set up in the Avda. Federico Soto and is open on Friday 8, Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 November, from 11 to 2 and from 5 to 9. Many (but not all) stalls will stay open from 11 to 9, as will the big department stores in this rather upmarket part of Alicante which also stay open on the Sunday. You can find out more by phoning 639 979 678 (English spoken) or having a look on the Amata web page www. amata.es which has an English section.

are nutritional powerhouses wrapped up in a very small package. They also contain plant compounds known as phytosterols and free-radical scavenging antioxidants,1 which can give your health an added boost. Best of all, because pumpkin seeds are highly portable and require no refrigeration, they make an excellent snack to keep with you whenever you’re on the go, or they can be used as a quick anytime snack at home, too.

9 Top Health Benefits of Pumpkin Seeds 1. Heart Healthy Magnesium One-quarter cup of pumpkin seeds contains nearly half of the recommended daily amount of magnesium, which participates in a wide range of vitally important physiological functions, including the creation of ATP (adenosine triphosphate, the energy molecules of your body), the synthesis of RNA and DNA, the pumping of your heart, proper bone and tooth formation, relaxation of your blood vessels, and proper bowel function. Magnesium has been shown to benefit your blood pressure and help prevent sudden cardiac arrest, heart attack, and stroke, yet an estimated 80 percent of Americans are deficient in this important mineral. 2. Zinc for Immune Support Pumpkin seeds are a rich source of zinc (one ounce contains more than 2 mg of this beneficial mineral). Zinc is important to your body in many ways, including immunity, cell growth and division, sleep, mood, your senses of taste and smell, eye and skin health, insulin regulation, and male sexual function. Many are deficient in zinc due to mineral-depleted soils, drug effects, plant-based diets, and other diets high in grain. This deficiency is associated with increased colds and flu, chronic fatigue, depression, acne, low birth weight babies, learning problems and poor school performance in children, among others. 3. Plant-Based Omega-3 Fats Raw nuts and seeds, including pumpkin seeds, are one of the best sources of plant-based omega-3s (alpha-linolenic acid or ALA). We all need ALA, however, ALA has to be converted by your body into the far more essential omega-3 fats EPA and DHA -- by an enzyme in which the vast majority of us have impaired by high insulin levels. So, while pumpkin seeds are an excellent source of ALA, I believe it is essential to get some of your omega-3 fats from animal sources, such as krill oil, as well. 4. Prostate Health Pumpkin seeds have long been valued as an important natural food for men’s health. This is in part because of their high zinc content, which is important for prostate health (where it is found in the highest concentrations in the body), and also because pumpkin seed extracts and oils may play a role in treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH, or enlarged prostate). Research suggests that both pumpkin seed oil and pumpkin seeds2 may be particularly beneficial in

supporting prostate health. 5. Anti-Diabetic Effects Animal studies suggest that pumpkin seeds may help improve insulin regulation and help prevent diabetic complications by decreasing oxidative stress.4 6. Benefits for Postmenopausal Women Pumpkin seed oil is rich in natural phytoestrogens and studies suggest it may lead to a significant increase in good “HDL” cholesterol along with decreases in blood pressure, hot flashes, headaches, joint pains and other menopausal symptoms in postmenopausal women.5 7. Heart and Liver Health Pumpkin seeds, rich in healthy fats, antioxidants and fibers, may provide benefits for heart and liver health, particularly when mixed with flax seeds.6 8. Tryptophan for Restful Sleep Pumpkin seeds are a rich source of tryptophan, an amino acid (protein building block) that your body converts into serotonin, which in turn is converted into melatonin, the “sleep hormone.” Eating pumpkin seeds a few hours before bed, along with a carbohydrate like a small piece of fruit, may be especially beneficial for providing your body the tryptophan needed for your melatonin and serotonin production to help promote a restful night’s sleep.7 9. Anti-Inflammatory Benefits Pumpkin seed oil has been found to exhibit antiinflammatory effects. One animal study even found it worked as well as the anti-inflammatory drug indomethacin in treating arthritis, but without the side effects.8 What’s the Best Way to Consume Pumpkin Seeds? In order to preserve the healthy fats present in the seeds, pumpkin seeds should be eaten raw. If you choose to purchase seeds from a bulk bin, make sure they smell fresh – not musty, spoiled or stale, which could indicate rancidity or the presence of fungal mycotoxins. Organic pumpkin seeds are preferred, as they will not be contaminated with pesticides or other harmful chemicals. However, most nuts and seeds have anti-nutrients like phytic acid that can make all the previously discussed important nutrients less bioavailable when you consume them. So if you plan on consuming seeds or nuts on a regular basis, it would be wise to soak or sprout them. To make them more palatable, you can then dehydrate them in your oven, or better yet and more cost effectively in a dehydrator. There are many The Barbershop at dehydrators on the market, Quesada Country Club but Excalibur is generally considered the best. I have used one for over 20 years. They are readily available on Modern & Amazon. Are you looking for somewhere to go this weekend? Sierra Nevada

‘A veces la vida es perfecta,’ says the advert for Alhambra Reserve beer in the middle of the luggage carousel at Granada airport - ‘Sometimes life is perfect.’ As we stand wearily in the baggage-reclaim hall, life seems anything but, and yet I’m excited. We’re about to have what looks, on paper at least, like the weekend with everything. Of course, Granada is an amazing historic city, with everything that encompasses: restaurants, bars, nightlife, cathedrals and culture, and a huge choice of fabulous hotels. Less well known is that it has its own ski resort, just 30 minutes’ drive up the hill. And we’re not just talking about a couple of lowly blue runs - there are 88km of slopes and the top lift rises to an impressive 3,300m. Better still, you don’t need to take a single day off work. If you live within striking distance of Stansted, you can take Ryanair’s Fridaynight flight direct to Granada, then fly home, after two full days’ skiing, on Sunday night. If you come during the ski season you get to see the city when it’s far quieter than in the peak summer months, and room rates, even at the grandest historic hotels, come crashing down. Oh, and if you fancy easing off the muscles after

DIGITAL HEARING OPEN DAY

your day on the piste, you can head to the seaside - the beach is only 45 minutes down the road. Thankfully, we don’t have to stare at the Alhambra beer advert too long. Ours is the only plane on the tarmac, the terminal is deserted, and our skis and bags come out almost immediately. Picking up our car takes five minutes and, after 20 minutes’ drive, we’re pulling up to our hotel in the city centre. Just over an hour after landing, we’re in our first tapas bar, glasses in hand, and, if not perfect, life is looking very rosy indeed. Next day I feel terrible, as we swing up the mountain roads to the resort. There are regular buses, but it’s far better to hire a car and drive yourself, thus also avoiding the need for airport taxis. The journey is only 31km and shouldn’t take longer than 30 minutes, but only if you leave early - no later than 8.30am - to beat the crowds, which can cause traffic jams. Despite the lingering taste of rioja, vermouth and jamon serrano in my mouth, it’s a fabulous morning - the sun is just rising behind the peaks, throwing down dramatic shafts of light on to the contourhugging road. In lay-bys, old men are opening stalls selling honey and nuts. We drive past olive and cherry trees and rows of almond trees covered in delicate pink blossom. It’s so warm and springlike that it seems astonishing we’re actually going skiing, but, as we pass 2,000m, we hit the snowline, and at 2,100m come to the Sierra Nevada ski resort. It has to be said that while Granada is one of Europe’s most gorgeous cities, its ski resort is one of the ugliest. There was never an original village here to give focus and charm, and, instead of creating a purpose-built resort with coherent styles and themes, the Spanish have thrown up all manner of modern blocks, jumbled together at random. It’s a relief to head up the lifts away from the resort, with Carlos, our instructor, who tells us we’re lucky. The previous day wind closed the lifts all day. ‘I just got in my car and drove down to the beach instead,’ he says with a grin. Carlos also explains that snow conditions are unrelated to those in

social events once more. If you want to join them, contact Michael Burke on 698 418 642, visit our website www. digitalhearingspain.com, or call in at our office at Calle los Arcos 7, Ciudad Quesada, to book your appointment.

Digital Hearing’s recent Open Day to celebrate the launch of the Moxi Kiss range went off with a bang, with a constant flow of interested people from the very minute the doors opened. Unitron, the Moxi Kiss aid’s Canadian manufacturers, sent product expert Mr Richard Jones RHAD to be on hand to demonstrate the Moxi’s ability to suppress background noise and play telephones, stereos and computers directly into your ears. He even lined up a remote microphone demonstration (great for delivering crystal clear instructions directly into the ear from the full length of a noisy bowling green). Hearing aid technology is constantly advancing at a rate of knots, and the Moxi Kiss range boasts the latest in digital hearing technology that 2013 can offer. As a result of Friday’s Open Day many people have already started their 30-day free trial and are on their way to clearer hearing and to enjoying company and

the Alps. Last winter the Alps did well, the Sierra Nevada less so, but it can be vice-versa, making this a clever alternative. Because of the altitude - most skiing is above 2,600m - the season is long, running from the start of December to the end of April, and the lifts run long hours too, from 9am until a staggered closing between 4.45pm and 5.30pm. There’s lots of good skiing here, if few off-piste challenges for real experts. At Borreguiles, there’s a super-wide area for beginners, with the terraces of a number of cafés directly beneath it in case there’s need for a comforting drink. On a ridge above is a huge radio telescope (sited here on account of the clear skies) beyond which are the best runs of all, hidden away in the secluded Laguna bowl. The mountains feel very different to the Alps. Rather than craning our necks up to look at the jagged peaks, we’re soon standing on top of the highest mountains for hundreds of miles (hence the occasional wind problem), looking down to the grey hills far below. From the top lift, which stops just short of the peak of Veleta, we can see the olive groves of Cazorla in the north, Granada to the west, and, to the south, the plastic tunnels of Almería’s fruit farms and the distant sparkle of the Mediterranean. The piste map even marks the Rif mountains of Morocco in the distance; it must be the only resort in the world that can show the mountains of two continents on its map. The other key selling point of this ski area, the southernmost in Europe by a very long way, is the sun. By the time we finish skiing, it’s baking hot and crowds of people are soaking up the rays in the strip of bars at the bottom of the pistes. These bars - Cuna, Tia Maria and Parallel - are pretty much identical and don’t serve tapas with the drinks, but their terraces face the afternoon sun and straight towards the mountains, so your view isn’t blotted by the resort itself. On Saturdays you can relax in a deck chair for a few hours in the afternoon, then head back up for more skiing. From 7pm to 9pm the gondola reopens and the long, sweeping El Rio piste is floodlit for night skiing. But, for us, the pull of Granada is too great. Back in town, we are spoilt for choice for spots to sit and watch the sunset over the mountains we’d been skiing on hours earlier. One excellent vantage point is the grand terrace bar of the fourstar Alhambra Palace Hotel. This evening, we give it a miss and park up and wander into the Sacromonte district, famous for its gypsy population and troglodyte houses. The more we walk, away from the centre of town, pressing further up the increasingly steepsided, narrow gorge alongside the river Darro, the more bucolic the atmosphere. We’re aimlessly wandering up the Verea de Enmedio, a winding cobbled lane no more than two feet wide, when we turn a corner to find a widening in the path, leaving enough space for a couple of orange trees to grow. Outside a cave doorway, a little metal table has been set up, from which sangria is being served. A few people sit drinking on a higgledy-piggledy collection of mismatched chairs. Two old gypsy women peel oranges, their skin dark and lined, their eyes dramatically made up. Two kittens play at their feet. Other people straddle the wall, looking past the Alhambra to where the entire city stretches out before them, and, beyond, to the setting sun. There’s no sign, but the barman later tells me it’s called Bar Chiringuito. I think I’ve discovered the world’s most romantic après-ski bar. Sometimes, life is perfect after all. • Extracted from White Weekends, Tom Robbins’s book on Europe’s best skiing and snowboarding short breaks, published by Bantam Press (£20). SOLTIMES OCTOBER 2013

A WARM SIBERIAN WELCOME by Mike Walsh The term legend and icon are much abused these days. The more pernickety reserve such terms for artistes whose professional heritage is based not on what they say but what they do. Having caught up with flamenco maestra Raquel Peña I came straight to the point. “You were feted in Sergut in Siberia, and also Moscow and St. Petersburg, where next your dancing feet?” Her reply; “there’s a relationship between the guitar and the balalaika; I share it and I rule nothing out.” An unassuming and approachable woman

Raquel’s unmatched dancing and teaching skills are internationally acclaimed. “Your legacy lives on in students. Some, like professional flamenco performers Daniel Asis, Elvira Sanchez and the breathtaking Argentinean beauty Luciana Ibañez are captivating audiences. This must bring great satisfaction.” Raquel smiled: “It does of course but you know, through the students from my school, Flamenco for All, my Sevillana dancers also keep alive the Andalucía spirit. They raise a great deal of money for charities whose purpose is to bring relief to the hard-pressed regardless of nationality.” Raquel who has earned more awards than many has to be nailed down. Most of the venues where she and her star-studded troupe appear are distinctly chic. Touching on the subject, she told me that she thinks it important that her flamenco performances reflect both Spanish ambiance and discerning clientele. “Having said that,” she adds. “It is equally important that my audience is not exclusive. Wherever we perform we welcome those who drop by. I only do two ticket only performances each year.” Dropping in is more easily said than done. THE SPAINIAC

Festival Medieval d’Elx Candice Parsons

This year from Friday October 25th to Sunday November 3rd 2013, the city of Elche in Alicante will host its 18th annual Festival Medieval d’Elx, as the city centre transforms into a Medieval town of historical commemoration. The city, now more than two thousand years old, holds a significant connection to the Middle Ages, which is generally believed to have been between the 5th and 15th centuries. In light of this, the festival presents its residents and visitors with an array of entertainment that enscapulates the rich Moorish and Baroque origins that have contributed to this city.

The central plaza is filled with Medieval street markets, whilst various free-roaming street entertainers, reenactments, fire displays, and passacaglia immerse the city. As an event catering to all ages and groups, a scheduled program offering entertainment and activities ranging from theatre performances, concerts, workshops, and cultural manifestations, to seminars, exhibitions, fireworks, and games for children. Often during the last few days of the Festival Medieval d’Elx, the famous liturgical drama,‘Misteri d’Elx’, is performed by local men of the city. This is creates an additional feature to the Medieval feel of the city, as women were forbidden to act during the Middle Ages. The Misteri d’Elx play is believed to have originated from Elche in the Medieval period, and commemorates the Assumption of Mary. From the year 2001, the play was declared a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Candice Parsons is a writer and avid Spain and Spanish World Heritage by UNESCO, and thus stands as a highlight aspect of the event. The culture lover from Melbourne, Australia. ‘Like’ my Facebook attractions and charm of the Festival Medieval d’Elx is a unique opportunity to gain page: www.facebook.com/pandemicrhapsody and follow me on a feel of being in Elche during the Middle Ages, and discover the diverse history and Twitter @MiLlamoCandi culture behind this ancient city.

If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com INHERITANCE TAX: MAKE USE OF THE HIGHER U.K EXEMPTION RATE Q. We will shortly be purchasing a property in Spain in joint names (value aprox. 150000 euro) where we intend to stay for 3 to 4 months a year spending the rest of the year in our flat in the u.k. (value aprox. 150000 euro ). We have no children and will be leaving the estate to each other using a Spanish will. Do we have to pay inheritance tax in Spain when one of us dies? A. If you remain non-residents of Spain then the surviving spouse would have to pay inheritance tax on half the value of the Spanish estate after deducting a 16.000 euro exemption. The surviving spouse would pay aprox. 6000 euro to inherit half the property. To avoid this you need to take advantage of the fact that the exemption rate in the u.k.( 325000 pounds sterling ) is much higher than the exemption rate in Spain for non resident spouses (only 16.000 euro) One solution would be for you to leave your money in the u.k and buy the property using a mortgage from a Spanish bank . The value of the Spanish estate would then be the value of half the property minus half the mortgage and the value of the English estate would be the value of half the property in the u.k. plus half of the money that you left in the u.k. As the total value of half the property in the uk. plus half the money is less than the threshold for inheritance tax in the u.k. (325000 pounds sterling) you pay no inheritance tax. In Spain or in the u.k. As setting up a mortgage has expenses attached, other options would need to be considered before using the system above, but for this we would require further information not available on your e-mail. NON-RESIDENT INCOME TAX. If you are non-resident of Spain and own a property you must file a non-resident income tax return every year even if you have never rented out the property. Please note that the tax office has no obligation of informing you of this. Do not confuse this tax with rates (IBI), which is a local tax and nothing to do with non-resident tax. If you have never paid this tax please make an appointment to discuss the best way to deal with the situation.

Extreme sports Extreme sports (also called action sports, aggro sports, and adventure sports) is a popular term for certain activities perceived as having a high level of inherent danger. These activities often involve speed, height, a high level of physical exertion, and highly specialized gear. The definition of an extreme sport is not exact and the origin of the term is unclear, but it gained popularity in the 1990s when it was picked up by marketing companies to promote the X Games and the Extreme Sports Channel and Extreme. com launched. While use of the term “extreme sport” has spread far and wide to describe a multitude of different activities, exactly which sports are considered ‘extreme’ is debatable. There are however several characteristics common to most extreme sports. While not the exclusive domain of youth, extreme sports tend to have a youngerthan-average target demographic. Extreme sports are rarely sanctioned by schools. Extreme sports tend to be more solitary than traditional sports . (Rafting and paintballing are notable exception, as they are done in teams.) In addition, beginning extreme athletes tend to work on their craft without the guidance of a coach (though some may hire a coach later). Activities categorized by media as extreme sports differ from traditional sports due to the higher number of inherently uncontrollable variables. These environmental variables are frequently weather and terrain related, including wind, snow, water and mountains. Because these natural phenomena cannot be controlled, they inevitably affect the outcome of the given activity or event. In a traditional sporting event, athletes compete against each other under controlled circumstances. While it is possible to create a controlled sporting event such as X Games, there are environmental variables that cannot be held constant for all athletes. Examples include changing snow conditions for snowboarders, rock and ice quality for climbers, and wave height and shape for surfers. Whilst traditional sporting judgment criteria may be adopted when assessing performance (distance, time, score, etc.), extreme sports performers are often evaluated on more subjective and aesthetic criteria. This results in a tendency to reject unified judging methods, with different sports employing their own ideals and indeed having the ability to evolve their assessment standards with new trends or developments in the sports. Source: wikipedia BASE Jumping: is very extreme activity that includes a parachute (can be used both parachute and wingsuit) to jump from fixed objects, with unopened parachute like skydiving. The acronym “B.A.S.E.” stands for: Building, Antenna, Span, Earth – four categories of objects from which B.A.S.E. jumper can jump. Source: extremefreestyle.com Free Running: Parkour What is Parkour? Parkour is not just about movement. It’s

about moving through an environment (natural or urban) as smoothly, efficiently and quickly as possible. It involves walking, running, jumping, crawling, climbing and balancing. It is about interacting with the environment as you move fluidly through it, overcoming obstacles as you go. Free runners practicing What is free running? Free running is an offshoot of Parkour. It too is about movement, but the emphasis is on creative movement rather than efficient movement. Free runners use the same types of movement as in Parkour, but with the addition of tricks and stunts, giving free running an aesthetic element. So depending on who you talk to free running is either a different form of Parkour or it is not strictly Parkour at all, but more of a close cousin. Parkour is of French origin and dates back to the turn of the century. Wingsuit sky diving:

ries, the activity has expanded into a sport that is marked by immense courage, focus, thrill and risk. Cliff diving is one of the riskier kinds of diving; hence, extreme caution is a must. To the benefit of the divers, certain standards have been set to minimize the risk factor. Some of these include determining the height of the jump (23 – 28 meters for men, 18 – 23 meters for women), an ideal entering speed of 75 – 100 km/h, and a free fall time of 3 seconds.

Wingsuit flying or wingsuiting is the sport of flying the human body through the air using a special jumpsuit, called a wingsuit, which adds surface area to the human body to enable a significant increase in lift. Modern wingsuits, first developed in the late 1990s, create the surface area with fabric between the legs and under the arms. Wingsuits are sometimes referred to as a birdman suit (after the makers of the first commercially available wingsuit), flying squirrel suit (due to their resemblance to the animal. Squirrel is now the name of a commercial wingsuit manufacturer), or bat suit (due to their vague resemblance to the animal or perhaps the superhero).

Read more at http://www.oddee.com/item_96668. aspx#D4VD0h8EY0xdCXgf.99

A wingsuit flight normally ends with a parachute opening. So a wingsuit can safely be flown from any point that provides sufficient altitude for flight and parachute deployment (normally a skydiving drop aircraft or BASE jump exit point).

Extreme Ironing (also called EI) is an extreme sport and a performance art in which people take ironing boards to remote locations and iron items of clothing. According to the Extreme Ironing Bureau, extreme ironing is “the latest danger sport that combines the thrills of an extreme outdoor activity with the satisfaction of a well-pressed shirt.”[1]

Volcano Boarding Racing down an active 2,380 ft volcano at speeds of 50 mph with only a board for protection is considered by many thrillseeking sports fanatics as the coolest sport around. Thousands of travelers head to the foothills of Nicaragua’s Cerro Negro mountain every year to take part in the new sporting craze. Surfers, dressed in protective jump suits, knee-pads and helmets, can reach speeds of up to 80 km/h (50mph) on their specially-constructed plywood boards. Since its creation, in 2005, the volcano boarding has attracted more than 10,000 participants. Read more at http://www.oddee.com/item_96668. aspx#D4VD0h8EY0xdCXgf.99 Source: oddee.com Cliff Diving Adding a new dimension to the sport of diving, cliff diving is defined as the acrobatic perfection of diving into water from a high cliff. Braving the rough rocks, divers take a plunge in the hard-hitting water beneath to experience a thrill to last for a lifetime. This dangerous sport originated from the Hawaiian Island of Lana´i in 1770. Kahekili, the king, demanded that his men leap off high cliffs and enter the water feet first without a splash, to prove their courage and loyalty. Today, after centu-

Source: oddee.com Zorbing Ball Effectively throwing yourself down a slope in a giant ball, or ‘Zorbing”, is one of the latest extreme sport craze to sweep the world. This bizarre sport, invented in 2000, involves a giant plastic ball, which has two skins, one inside the other. The person zorbing is in the area between the skins, which is pumped up with air. The middle ball effectively suspends them on a cushion of air 700mm off the ground and the ball is then rolled down a hill. Like a number of other extreme sports, such as bungee jumping, zorbing originated in New Zealand. There are two different ways to zorb - either harnessed inside the ball, or “hydrozorbing”, which involves putting water in the ball, which zorbers can slide around on as it revolves. Source: oddee.com Extreme ironing

Part of the attraction and interest the media has shown towards extreme ironing seems to centre on the issue of whether it is really a sport or not. It is widely considered to be tongue-in-cheek.[2] Some locations where such performances have taken place include a mountainside of a difficult climb; a forest; in a canoe; while skiing or snowboarding; on top of large bronze statues; in the middle of a street; underwater; in the middle of the M1 Motorway;[3] during a keirin race;[4] whilst parachuting;[5] and under the ice cover of a lake. The performances have been conducted solo or by groups. Source: Wikipedia Pic source: roomorama.com

Now that you’ve probably turned the heating on, and for the lucky ones, are thinking about lighting the open fire, you’ve probably started to notice all those unpleasant draughts that you’ve forgotten about from last year. The way the front door doesn’t quite fit at the bottom, or how the wind whistles through the keyhole when it’s facing a certain direction. Or even, in the really old houses, how you feel as if the glass itself isn’t really even holding the weather at bay. So here’s what you need to consider before the weather really gets going.

New boiler This is the most important investment, the most expensive, and the one that will save you the most money in the long run. Condensing boilers are the most efficient and if your current boiler is more than 15 years old and you replace it, adding a new set of heating controls, you can expect to save a quarter on your bills, and reduce your carbon dioxide emissions. Make sure you contact a Gas Safe Registered engineer to discuss whether a combination or regular condensing boiler is most suitable for your home. Loft insulation Research from the Energy Saving Trust (EST) released last week found that nearly a quarter of British homes don’t have any loft insulation, mainly because they are worried about the cost of installing it. Paula Owen,

B.D. Security

an Energy Doctor for the EST, says: “Insulating your home can ensure that you cut down on the 50 per cent of heat lost keeping an un-insulated home warm each winter.” Owen recommends visiting www.energysavingtrust. org.uk for information and advice about grants to help with the cost of installing loft and wall insulation. Weatherproof Your Windows Eliminate drafts The most critical step is to simply fix up your existing windows. Give your windows a thorough inspection for cracks, gaps and holes. If there are any cracked panes, replace them or seal the cracks with clear caulk. Check the putty around the edges of the glass, and seal any cracked or missing areas.

Seal the sill If drafts are your problem, check the crack at the bottom of the window where the window meets the sill. This is where cold air often creeps in through. To block the crack, fill a pair of socks with rice or lentils and tie off the tops. Lay the filled socks across the window sill. Of course, make sure the socks are nice-looking, and sturdy enough to hold the rice. You can also get some bean bags and lay them across the window sill. Or, measure the length of the sill and sew your own long bean bag for a custom fit.

The next step is to get some weather stripping and seal the edges of your windows. Weather stripping is cheap and will go a long way toward keeping out those drafty flows of outside air. Vinyl is your best bet, especially if you live in a place with some pretty extreme weather conditions. It’s waterproof, durable and forms a tight seal. Foam and felt are cheap, but they aren’t as durable and the seal isn’t as tight. All of these options come in selfadhesive strips. If vinyl’s too ugly, you can use copper or some other metal, but you’ll have to nail it in place.

Seal your windows with caulk Look for the tubes of weather stripping caulking marked “removable” and “temporary”. They’re usually clear, they dry solid and they don’t bond to paint or finishing. One tube should be enough for two or three windows.

How to Give an Old Dresser a New Look

that’s needed to keep it in good condition, and the same applies to pressure-treated gates, fences, trellises and decking.

Five steps for giving an old dresser a new look, no Botox necessary.

* Hardwood garden furniture, such as teak and iroko, contain natural oils that provide protection from weathering. To protect and prolong the natural colour of hardwood, use a specially formulated sealing product recommended by the furniture’s manufacturer.

Tools

-drop cloth (because accidents happen) -fine-grain sandpaper (220 grit) -damp cloth - paintbrush - 1 quart of white paint from The Old Fashioned Milk Paint Company (Milk Paint is not available everywhere, so check out MilkPaint.com for retailers in your area or to buy online.) - new hardware

How To

1. Remove the hardware and put the dresser in the center of your drop cloth. 2. Grab that sandpaper and give the cabinet a quick sanding to scuff the paint and correct any surface roughness. Wipe away dust with a clean, slightly damp cloth; be careful not to soak the wood. 3. Break out the brush and paint and apply a coat. (Try making strokes in the direction of the grain.) Let dry. Applying a second coat is only necessary if the original color bleeds through. 4. Once the paint is completely dry, find that piece of sandpaper and prepare to distress. Your goal is to achieve the subtle effect of wear and tear, not for the furniture to look beaten and battered. 5. Polish off the look by attaching stylish new knobs to the furniture. Then go ahead and marvel at your handy work.

How to: revamp wooden garden furniture Follow these easy steps to bring your wooden garden furniture back to its best Untreated wood will weather over time, turning grey and developing minor imperfections and splits in the grain, and it will also be more susceptible to stains, algae and mould. Here’ how to look after it properly... * It’s a good idea to treat new fences, trellises and arbours with a product that will protect it from the elements, such as Cuprinol Garden Wood Preserver (£12.99 for 1L), which colours the wood as well as preserving it. * Got an older fence that has become weathered and needs reviving? ‘Apply a wax-enriched protecting formula that will penetrate into the wood to kill the fungal spores that cause rot,’ says Marina Poza, Cuprinol brand manager. Try Cuprinol Ultimate Garden Wood Protector (£27.98, for 4l), which comes in six colours. * If you’ve got a big area to tackle, try a spray-on stain, such as Ronseal One Coat Sprayable Fencelife (£13.99 for 5l), and use a Ronseal Pump Sprayer (£28.98), to get the job done five times faster than with a paintbrush. * Softwood garden furniture, such as pine or cedar, can be pressure treated to resist decay and mould. A wash now and again with soapy water to remove dirt should be all

NAVIGATE YOUR WAY TO SUCCESS WITH SOL TIMES

CALL JENNI ON 618 530 767 Today’s article starts with a little quizz to fill in the missing word from these two songs. The first being, Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. “ Scaramouche, Scaramouche will you do the .......?” and secondly - the opening lines of a whiter shade of pale by Procul Harum. “We skip a light ............., turn cartwheels across the floor” The word dear Readers, is FANDANGO! Now what is Fandango? Of course it is of Spanish Origin, otherwise we would not be discussing it today: - You can either play, sing or dance the Fandango but it is more widely known as a dance for couples - accompanied by a guitar and either castanets or hand-clapping (‘Palmas’).

As with most things, the music and the dance are so interwoven it is difficult to prise the two apart. It has been said that the earliest known record of the melody used for the Fandango is in the ‘Libro de diferentes cifras de guitarra’ (Book of Different Guitar Melodies) in 1705. The dance itself was first documented by Spanish Composer Antonio Solar, in 1712. What is quite unusual in itself, is that the origins of Fandango dancing as well as the creation of Fandango music are sometimes understood to reach back into early Roman and Greek culture, and are sometimes associated as an erotic expression of dance that was especially popular in Rome - So, with that in mind, it is quite unusual that the fandango, turned out to be the most important influence in Soler’s music, being that he was a Spanish monk and belonged to a strict monastic order, residing at the Escorial outside Madrid. It is said that Soler’s harpsichord sonatas, most of which were dedicated to Prince Gabriel de Bourbon, are quite astounding for sheer inventiveness — and for a monk, quite astonishing in the daring imitation of the folk genre. What is undisputed it that music inspires the dance, and that in turn inspires other composers to incorporate it into their genre for example. Luigi Boccherini included a fandango in one of his quintets and Mozart in his opera ‘The Marriage of Figaro’, includes an example in act three; both composers actually calling it fandango. The dance had such a sensual nature that Casanova, shocked by the salaciousness of the couples dancing it, wrote in his memoirs of 1768 that, ‘It is almost beyond description. Each couple, a man and a woman, take only three steps at a time, clicking castanets to the rhythm of the orchestra and making gestures of an unparalleled lasciviousness with which nothing can compare. The whole expression of love is displayed from beginning to end, from the sigh of desire to the height of ecstasy. It seemed to me quite impossible that after such a dance, the woman could refuse her partner anything, for the fandango inflames the senses with every stimulus of desire. The pleasure I experienced from, ‘watching this Bacchanal brought me to the point of ........ screaming’. Obviously now, the style fandangos known to Soler were quite different from the modem type, however, most aficionados agree that the fandango is the basis for most Spanish dances. It was performed in almost every region of Spain as an Andalucian folk song and dance as far back as the 17th century, with roots established around the 8th century. Apparently because the dance

is eye catching and dramatic, the fandango has evolved in society as a slang word used to describe a spectacular quarrel and because some of the movements in the Fandango that were not quite ‘acceptable’ to the Europeans, the bolero evolved!

Now back to the first two songs that we featured in the opening lines,, Is it co-incidence that both of these British Songs, featuring the word ‘Fandango” have met with unparelled success? Did you know that “Bohemian Rhapsody” is the second most played song on British radio, in clubs and on jukeboxes collectively, after Procol Harum’s “A Whiter Shade of Pale”. The similarities do not end there,,,In 1977, the song was named joint winner (again, along with Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody”) of the Best British Pop Single 1952–1977 at the Brit Awards. Both songs, have been inducted into Grammy Hall of Fame - In 1998 for “A whiter Shade of Pale” and 2004 for “Bohemian Rhapsody” The last song to have included the word ‘Fandango is by by DJ Quik and is as ‘risque’ as the origins of the dance itself....”Feel free to lose your mind, let’cha brain go, F.... the tango do the Fandango” My sentiments exactly! STORY FROM: http://www.christmasarchives.com/

www.soltimes.com

The Christmas Cake as we know it today comes from two customs which became one around 1870 in Victorian England. Originally there was a porridge, the origins of which go back to the beginnings of Christianity. Then there was a fine cake made with the finest milled wheatflour, this was baked only in the Great Houses, as not many people had ovens back in the 14th century.

PLUM PORRIDGE Originally people used to eat a sort of porridge on Christmas Eve. It was a dish to line the stomach after a day’s fasting, which people used to observe for Christmas Eve, or the ‘Vigil’ as it was called long ago. Gradually, they began to put spices, dried fruits, honey etc in the porridge to make it a special dish for Christmas. Much later it was turned into a pudding, because it got to be so stiff with all the fruits and things, that they would tie it in a cloth, and dunk it into a large

Prep Time: 1 hour Cook Time: 4 hours, 30 minutes Total Time: 5 hours, 30 minutes

Ingredients: 1lb 2oz/525g currants 8oz/ 225g golden raisins/sultanas* 8oz / 225g raisins 4oz / 110g mixed candied peel, finely chopped 6oz / 165 glace cherries, halved 10oz/ 300g all purpose or plain flour Pinch salt ½ level tsp mixed spice ** ½ level tsp ground cinnamon ½ level tsp freshly ground nutmeg 2½ sticks / 300g butter, slightly softened 10 oz / 300g soft brown sugar Zest of ½ lemon 6 large eggs, lightly beaten 3 tbsp brandy, plus extra for feeding

cauldron of boiling water and boil it for many hours. This turned into Christmas Pudding.

PLUMCAKE Later, around the 16th century, it became popular to add butter, replace the oatmeal with wheatflour, add eggs to hold it together better. This became boiled plumcake. So boiled plum pudding and boiled fruitcake existed side by side depending on which ingredients the housewife used. Only big houseS had proper ovens to bake in. In the castles and fine homes, people would make a special cake for Easter, which was a rich fruitcake recipe with a topping of what we now call marzipan or almond paste. A similar cake was baked for the Christmas festivities, but whereas the Easter one was a plain cake with almonds, the Christmas one had dried fruits in season and spices. These represented the exotic spices of the East, and the gifts of the Wise Men . Such things were first brought to Europe and Britain particularly, by the Crusaders coming

back from the wars in the Holy Land in the 12th century.

TWELFTH NIGHT CAKE But it was not a Christmas cake, but a Twelfth Night Cake. Twelfth night is on the 5th January, and has been for centuries the traditional last day of the Christmas season.. It was a time for having a great feast, and the cake was an essential part of the festivities. This was slightly different in different countries, and also at different social levels

Preparation: Heat the oven to 300°F/150°C/ Gas 2 The temperature is low as the cake needs a long slow bake. It is packed with sugars, fruits and brandy and if the temperature is any higher the outside of the cake will burn and the inside be undercooked. Line a 9 inch cake tin with 2 thicknesses of parchment or greaseproof paper. Tie a double band of brown or newspaper paper around the outside. This acts as an insulator and to prevent the cake from burning on the outside read more about why here. In a large roomy baking bowl mix the currants, sultanas, raisins, peel and cherries with the flour, salt and spices. In another large bowl cream the butter with the sugar until light and fluffy. Stir in the lemon zest. Add the beaten egg to the butter

mixture a little bit at a time, beating well after each addition - do not try to rush this process as the mixture could curdle. If it does curdle simply add a tbsp of flour and mix again, this should bring the mixture back together. If it doesn’t come back together, don’t fret, the cake will still be delicious. Carefully fold in half the flour and fruit into the egg and butter mixture, once incorporated repeat with the remaining flour and fruit. Finally add the brandy. Spoon the cake mixture into the prepared cake tin making sure there are no air pockets. Once filled smooth the surface with the back of s spoon and make a slight dip in the center (this will rise back up again during cooking and create a smooth surface for icing the cake). Finally, using a piece of paper towel clean up any smears of cake batter on the greaseproof

wrapping, if left on they will burn, and though it won’t affect the cake, it doesn’t smell too good. Stand the tin on a double layer of newspaper in the lower part of the oven, if you have a gas oven ensure the paper is well away from the any flame, and bake for 4½ hours. If the cake is browning too rapidly, cover the tin with a double layer of greaseproof or parchment paper after 2½ hours. During the cooking time avoid opening the oven door too often as this may cause the cake to collapse. After 4½ hours check the cake is cooked. The cake should be nicely risen and a deep brown all over.

Insert a skewer or fine knife into the centre of the cake. If there is sticky dough on the skewer when you pull it out it needs cooking longer, if it is clean, the cake’s done and remove from the oven. Leave the cake to cool in the tin on a wire rack for an hour, then remove from the tin and leave to cool completely. Once cooled prick the surface of the cake with a fine metal skewer and slowly pour over 2 - 3 tbsp brandy. This feeding should be repeated every two weeks up until Christmas. The cake should be stored wrapped in greaseproof or parchment paper in an airtight tin.

SOLTIMES OCTOBER 2013

‘Strictly Line Up for 2013’ wee k 5 By Lyn Aspden of ‘Strictly Dance’

Opening the show this week were Natalie Gumede and Artem with a Samba. Natalie showed a great range of basic steps with super rhythm and nicely extended lines, but for me this week her boto fogo’s (one of the basic movements) showed an ugly leg line and for that reason I only gave her an 8 with the judges 35. NextoutwereAbbeyClancyandAljazwith their Foxtrot. I was a little disappointed in this performance which wasn’t as smooth as I was expecting. To gain more softness Abbey needs to stretch her legs back more when moving backwards as a result this wasn’t just as controlled as in previous weeks. I awarded her 8 and the judges a total of 35. Following were Dave Myers and Karen with a Salsa. Well how can I describe this? It certainly wasn’t dancing, his timing was awful, salsa basic non existent but yet it proved popular with the crowd. It really is time he wasn’t here as he is now taking space of good dancers. I awarded him a very generous 2 and the judges 17. With a Viennese Waltz were Deborah Meaden and Robin. As a result of a core which is still too soft, her Viennese Waltz chasses were skipped and not smooth. It

was an improvement on last week and the transitions between hold and solo work were quite good. I gave her 5 and the judges 27. Patrick Robinson and Anya were next with their Salsa. On Friday, Patrick sustained a hand injury which meant that much of the choreography had to be changed to single handed basic and lifts meaning that the normal armography was missing. That said Patrick’s musicality is really good and he coped superbly well under the circumstances. He received a 7 from me and 28 from the judges. Next with a Quickstep were Fiona Fullerton and Anton. I found this routine very repetitive and lacking variety of steps. Fiona is still have posture issues and she didn’t complete her routine without errors. She is however improving. I gave her 6 with 30 from the judges. Rachel Riley and Pasha then performed a Paso Doble. Although Rachel tried to retain her intensity, it was let down by her weak body posture. She was dancing with her bottom stuck out resulting in her leaning forward, quite the opposite of what you need for this dance. Her basic chasse cape was poor and her kicks showed no pointed

toes! I gave her 5 with the judges 22. Mark Benton and Ivetta then danced their Waltz. Rather disappointing for me this week, Mark was leading with his left arm instead of his body and as a result his Waltz wasn’t as smooth as it could have been. I awarded him 5 with the judges 28. Jive was the next dance for Ashley Taylor Dawson and Ola. This was a great routine full of energy, the basic moves weren’t bad but still a bit flat footed for me with work needed on his kicks to sharpen them and point toes! I gave him 7 with the judges awarding 31. Suzanna Reid and Kevin then performed an American Smooth. She showed great characterisation of this dance, nicely danced but again still needing work on the upper frame which if sorted would result in her going rapidly up the ratings. The judges gave her 32 and I gave an 8. Ben Cohen and Kristina followed with their Quickstep. They performed a good range of steps which were reasonably well performed even though Ben still needs to work on his hold, posture and timing but it was still a good attempt. I awarded him 6 with the judges a total of 27. Closing this weeks show were Sophie

Ellis Bextor and Brendan with a Cha Cha Cha. Sophie has great legs but still hasn’t quite mastered how to use them correctly, in this dance she needed more of a pedal action bending and straightening her knees to produce the hip action and better use of feet and ankles. Her Cha Cha was a bit stompy with her weight carried too far back in some parts. I gave her 6 with the judges 30. I found this week to be a bit disappointing with most of the performances lacking finesse. All the boys need to work on correcting flat feet and use their feet and ankles more and the girls really need to get to grips with their frame and posture. In the bottom 2 were Patrick and Deborah, Patrick surviving easily with a judges unanimous vote to continue to next week. I just hope we don’t have to suffer Dave for much longer!! Next week is Halloween week so the costumes and makeup will be OTT. In the meantime don’t forget you can learn along with the stars at one of our classes but til then - Keep Dancing! Happy Dancing Lyn xxx

A new book explores true tales of unlikely animal adoptions ‘One Big Happy Family’ by Lisa Rogak is full of heartwarming true stories of animals raising other species’ young as their own.

Stories of interspecies friendships are always adorable, but they’re truly heartwarming when they involve animals adopting young outside their species and caring for them as their own. Lisa Rogak collected more than 40 such tales in her new book, “One Big Happy Family: Heartwarming

Or like Hilda the hen, who accidentally sat on the wrong nest and ended up hatching ducklings who, thanks to avian imprinting, assumed Hilda was their mother. “It’s not unusual for animals to be nurturing toward any species,” says John C. Wright, Ph.D., author of “Ain’t Misbehavin’: The Groundbreaking Program For Happy, Well-Behaved Pets And Their People.” “The instinct to care for another animal can be hormonal, or simply related to age. If they’re young, their behavior is malleable, and they’re open to just about any experience, opportunity or companion. Like humans, animals, for the most part, yearn for company.” Laura Moss

We turned into the Hospital car park at Huercal-Overa, and began cruising the aisles with a predatory air as we searched for the last, and only, space. Simultaneously we saw it, and swooped little Del into it, like a metal peregrine falcon on to a magnetic lure. As he came to rest neatly mid-space, Pete made the discovery that the handbrake was no more – it was still physically present, but only in a decorative way. Fortunately the car park is flat, so Del was still where we had left him when we returned. It is not until you don’t have a handbrake that you realise how many times you use it, so on our journey home we called in at the garage that has ministered to Del’s needs satisfactorily in the past, hoping to make a speedy appointment for his brake to be mended. I explained the problem to a young lad whose physical perfections transcended the multi-layered grease of his overalls, and he explained the problem to his boss, who bore an uncanny resemblance to Phil Collins. Together they approached Del, swept him into the workshop, pulled the josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk

useless brake about a couple of times, and tinkered around in the handbrake well accompanied by rachetting noises. Phil Collins then departed to his computer in the office, leaving Limaria’s answer to Fernando Alonso to test the mended brake. This he did by revving Del into a racing start across the floor of the workshop, then jamming the newly mended brake on to arrest his headlong progress inches before he disappeared through a Del-shaped hole in the far wall. I watched, marvelling at his confidence in his expertise and Del’s handbrake! ‘It wasn’t working before, but it is now!’ he commented, as he unpeeled himself from the driving seat. Phil Collins was still in his office, tapping computer keys; I wondered if the length of time he spent tapping equated to the size of the eventual cuenta, so I entered, purse in hand, knowing that such instant and effective service was sure to come with an equally instant and effective bill. He rose from the incongruous surroundings of a fairly clean office, returning to the floor of the workshop, where he looked more at home. ‘No, nothing to pay’ he insisted, with much hand waving and a beaming smile, before immersing himself up to the armpits in open heart surgery on a white van. Now that’s how to win friends and influence people! Plus I can now safely park Del on the north face of the Eiger, should I choose to do so!

Harold the Conqueror and All That If you feel like a good laugh sometime, then tune in to some of current crop of quiz programmes on television. I say laugh, because I find that the choice is either that or hold my head in my hands and babble incomprehensibly. In either case, there is a strong possibility of wetting myself. I have rattled on a lot in the past about how the history of the British has been sidelined in schools back home, in favour of more ‘important and relevant’ subjects. I have bent the proverbial ear-holes of a lot of people, arguing that unless we know the history of our country, then how can we accurately place ourselves in relation to the rest of the world or understand how we got here. Indeed - how can we know who we are as individuals? A great example of this lack of knowledge (I’m being polite here) was in evidence a week or so ago when a contestant on Take On The Twisters was asked which of three historic family houses was in conflict with the house of York during the English Wars of the Roses. The three choices were:

Stuart, Lancaster and Tudor. The contestant in question was a young man in his early twenties, who declared confidently that he had achieved an A Level in history and so should know the answer. He immediately discarded Lancaster and after a little bit of pondering, decided that it was either the Tudors or the Stuarts . . . brilliant deduction Sherlock. Finally he decided on the House of Tudor. York . . . Lancaster? White Rose . . . Red Rose? Julia Bradbury teased. Nah? Forget it. Then more recently on Tipping Point, that chipper quiz-master-chappie Ben Shephard asked a vacant looking bloke, what was the name of the leader of the Normans at the Battle of Hastings. There is a choice in this game of either answering the question or passing it over to one of your fellow contestants if you are clueless, which in this case – after a bit of head scratching – is what happened. Over then to a fresh faced college student. A smile appeared on the young man’s face as he affirmed that he knew this one and gave the answer as ‘Harold’. Now I am sure that the individuals in these two examples would run rings round me in the Information Technology/Political Science/ The Theory and Practice of White Water Rafting on the Kennet & Avon Canal – stakes. But that aside I find

By Colin Bird : badbirdnow@gmail.com

it appalling that a supposedly well educated British student does not know about one of the principal events in English history, that in my day was taught to us in the early years of Primary School. Until I witnessed this farce, I thought it was a done deal that if nothing else, then surely every Brit knows about 1066 and all that. Seems I was wrong. At least two out of four people – if this quiz programme is an indicator – know less about our history than a Siberian tap dancer. And in case you are wondering; it was not just a case of getting the names of the protagonists mixed up, because when this bright spark was told that the answer was William Duke of Normandy - later know as the conker – he simple pursed his lips and slowly shook his head as if to say: ‘Never heard of him.’ Gawd knows what you would get if you asked these turnips about King Harold and the Battle of Stamford Bridge which was commemorated last month. Probably some stuff about a London derby in the football Premiership. By way of confirmation of all this, the Daily Telegraph conducted a survey of its own some time ago, and asked who won the Battle of Hastings. A third of all 16-34 year olds did not know that it was William the Conqueror, while more than a fifth of those surveyed thought that we had been conquered by

the Germans, Americans or Spanish. In fairness, this ignorance was not confined to the young with 22% of the over 65 year olds questioned not being aware that the Romans had conquered Britain at one time. But come on . . . this is just an age related memory issue. We are not aware of a lot of things these days. I can’t remember, um . . . Anyway where was I . . . ? Yes and get this. Less than half of the younger age group in the survey, were able to identify Francis Drake as the victorious leader against the Spanish Armada. The rest thought it might have been Christopher Columbus, Gandalf or Horatio Hornblower. Honestly . . . Everyone knows that Hornblower clobbered the French at the Battle of Trafalgar Square.

Apart from a dishevelled beard and a Seville Hat which sits perpetually on the top of a spherical crimson faced head, Pedro el Estevado has three claims to fame. Firstly, he breeds the world renowned Alquerian Newt Hound. A strange dog evolved from the Andalucían Hound and fearless in its search for the formidable Alquerian Newt. Second. He has the most pronounced bow legs on the Iberian Peninsula. He is so bow legged that when naked his genitals appear to be in parentheses. Thirdly he has B.O. His body odour is mentioned in the UN Chemical Weapons’ Convention. When he applies deodorant his B.O. simply acts as a catalyst modifying even the most fragrant odour into a foul smelling emission. Pedro’s body odour is almost tangible. Some swear they have seen a strange glowing mist engulf him when his body juices are in ascendance. People naturally avoid him. Those who are not swift enough to take evasive action are usually buttonholed by him. These unfortunates will agree to anything just to cut the interview short. Pedro believes this is down to his eloquence in debate rather than his nauseating personal pong. The simple villagers feel rather intimidated by his powers of persuasion and so avoid him, at least this is what Pedro believes and of course explains why people avoid him. So Pedro struts about the village scattering its inhabitants before. His B.O. flowing like a malodorous veil, if it were visible it could screen the largest of convoys. Today however Pedro was in demand. Rodriquez the olive mill owner and patriarch of the Newcomers needed to speak with him. Rodriquez had taken precautions in the form of a handkerchief heavily doped with aftershave which he kept against his mouth on the pretext of having a slight cold. Pedro was overjoyed at the meeting. He listened intently to Rodriquez bemoaning the fact that the Alquerian coffers were empty after the failure of Remitbrick and Remitbright. Rodriquez, turning almost purple with the stench issuing from the open necked shirt told him of his wonder at Pedro’s powers of persuasion and how he could charm the very birds of the very trees. Rodriquez laid it on thick and Pedro lapped it up, growing in stature and stench at each new complement. Rodriquez is a man who specialises in Machiavellian intrigue and is a man who regards himself as a born leader. There was a reason for these overtures he made to Pedro el Estevado.

A reason which will become clear very very soon!

500g lean minced beef 1 small onion, finely chopped 1 eating apple, peeled and finely chopped (or grated) 1 red pepper, cored, seeded and finely chopped leaves from 2 sprigs oregano or 1 tsp dried plain flour for coating olive oil, for frying For the sauce 1 small onion, finely chopped 2 tbsp olive oil 4 x 225g packs cherry tomatoes on the vine, halved dash of Worcestershire sauce dash of soy sauce handful of fresh basil leaves

Mash the meat in a bowl with a spoon, then tip in the onion, apple, red pepper and oregano (and seasoning if you want to). Mash again to mix everything together. Now mix well with your hands until the mixture is sticky and divide into 16 smallish balls. Chill in the fridge while you make the sauce. You can make them up to this stage 2 days ahead, or freeze them. Make the sauce. Soften the onion in a medium saucepan with the oil. Tip in the tomatoes and simmer very gently, uncovered, for about 20 mins. Add the rest of the ingredients except the basil and slow cook for another 15-20 mins. Add

the basil and a splash of water from the kettle. Tip the contents of the pan into the food processor and whizz until smooth. Heat oven to 190C/fan 170C/gas 5. Gently roll the meatballs in flour. Heat a spoonful of oil in an ovenproof non-stick frying pan, wipe out with kitchen paper, then add the meatballs and fry gently and slowly over a low heat for 10 mins, turning them over once with tongs. (You may need to do this in batches if your pan is not very big.) Drain off any excess fat, pour in the sauce and finish off cooking in the oven for 15 mins. Serve with pumpkin mash.

Beef brains One 100-g serving of this (admittedly nauseating) dish can provide one-fifth of your daily protein needs, without adding high amounts of fat. It is popular amongst those on a low carb diet who need to eat large amounts of meat protein but want to keep fat intake low. (It’s going to take more than that to get me to eat it!) Black pudding Made from the dried blood of pigs or cows, this popular dish here in Spain tastes like sausage. Blood pudding contains “heam,” the type of iron absorbed most readily by the body, making it a strong defence against anemia. Wheatgrass A superfood typically ground up and consumed in liquid form, wheatgrass cleans toxins from the body, and it’s considered healthier than almost any other vegetable you could eat. Marmite This spread made from yeast extract is low in sugar, low in calories and 100% vegetarian. Preparation method

Cut the top off the pumpkin and set aside. Scoop out the seeds and fibres from the middle and discard. Using a sharp knife and a spoon, carefully hollow out the pumpkin, removing the flesh and setting aside. (It is imperative that you do not cut right up to the inside of the skin or pierce it. Leave 2cm/1in of flesh all around the inside.) Roughly chop the scooped-out pumpkin flesh. Melt the butter in a large pan with a lid over a low heat and add the onions. Cook the onions gently for 10-15 minutes, until they are softened and golden-brown. Add the pumpkin flesh, the cinnamon and nutmeg, and season, to taste, with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Increase the heat to medium and cover with the lid. Cook for 40-45 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent the base from burning, until the pumpkin is cooked through. Add the stock and bring to the boil. Remove from the

These little ginger kittens are part of 80+ cats and kittens living in APAH’s Cattery at the moment. If you are looking for a cat or kitten, there MUST be one you will fall in love with. Many of the adults cats have never known a loving home. To arrange to visit the Cattery, please contact Yvonne on 630 422 563.

To arrange to meet APAH’s dogs and cats who all need loving homes, please contact Yvonne on 630 422 563.

More history of the world Cup play in 1944, then when play resumed they won Serie A again in 1946, 47, 48 and 1949. The Torino team were returning from a match in Portugal when their plane crashed killing all on board. The team was devastated, despite the horrific loss Torino played the rest of the season by fielding its youth team. The teams they played against out of respect also fielded their youth teams. Torino won the Scudetto (league title) in 1950 but then did not win again until 1976. Italy agreed to travel to Brazil but rather than fly they travelled by ship. The British teams were again invited to take part and the Home Nations Championships were used as the qualifying competition. FIFA decided that the top two teams would travel to Brazil. The Scottish FA announced that they would only compete in the World Cup if they won the Home Championships; they came second with England winning. So England travelled alone to their first ever World Cup. England were firm favourites having recently beaten an invitation European eleven 6-1 and they beat Chile in their first game 2-0. But calamity struck when the inventors of the beautiful game lost their next two games 0-1, against upstarts USA and then Spain. Uruguay playing for the first time since winning in1930 beat Brazil 2-1to become world champions again. The 1954 finals were in Switzerland. West Germany qualified and both England and Scotland played. These finals have the record for the most goals scored with some huge scores; 7-5 in the Austria v Switzerland quarter final, Uruguay the holders put paid to Scottish dreams by trouncing them 7-0. Then in the quarters they sent England home by winning 4-2. The final was between tournament favourites Hungary and West Germany. The Germans won 3-2 with a team made up of amateurs as professional football was not yet played in Germany. Afterwards allegations of performance enhancing drug use were made against the Germans which was likely as many in the team caught jaundice from using the same hypodermic needle at half time.

Moses Comes to the Sierra Alhamilla The Sierra Alhamilla, 15km northeast of Almeria City is a beautiful, rugged mountain range riven by deep gullies, semi-arid except for outcrops of holm oak and largely unpopulated; just the place to meet Moses!

pause for thought How rapidly time passes as we grow older! Why Easter seems like only yesterday, and yet October is now passing and Poppy Day already upon us! I often wonder what our Spanish Hosts make of our apparent infatuation with this small red flower, and from such conversations as I’ve had, many seem to be of the mistaken opinion that we’re merely revelling in the past; celebrating the achievements of a once powerful British Empire.

And as on Armistice Day we listen again to that reading from the 15th chapter of John’s Gospel: “Greater love has no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends”, I’m sure that many will rightly reflect, not just on those of the armed forces who gave their lives on our behalf, but also of all those we love who are no longer with us, remembering their lives too with gratitude. And for those of us who are Christians, we will necessarily be reminded of the love of Jesus himself, the original author of these words, spoken as he prepared to give his life to win our eternal freedom from the consequences of all the wrong things we so often do. So let’s now wear our poppies with pride and gratefully remember all to whom we owe so much Details of a number of English Language Churches are given in Sol Noticeboard for any wishing to Worship, whilst additionally, further information about the Anglican Church in this area may be seen on the web site www.mojacarchurch.org Duncan Burr is Licensed Lay Reader for the Anglican Chaplaincy of Costa Almeria and Costa Cálida and may be contacted at djburr@avired.com

But this of course is far from the truth. For whilst there may indeed be an element of celebration that we have been spared to live our lives in freedom, the primary consideration of Remembrance-tide is that of gratitude to the many thousands who over the years have given themselves to ensure we have that freedom. The efforts, the pain, the suffering and sacrifice of so many, not just in two World Wars, but even now as they seek to protect us from much of the potential horror of modern terrorism, surely deserves our gratitude, our donations and a little at least, of our time as we remember them on Remembrance Sunday and at the Armistice Services held on November 11th.

Moses is not the only Old Testament character currently in the area, which is the location for the filming of Ridley Scott’s epic Exodus. Based on the Book of Exodus, and based on the life of Moses, the 20th Century Fox production will portray the relationship between the prophet and the Egyptian Pharoah Ramses 1. Christian Bale is portraying Moses, who leads the Israelites out of Egypt and on to their journey to the Promised Land. Breaking Bad actor Aaron Paul will play the Hebrew slave Joshua, who goes on to lead the people onto the promised land after Moses. Joel Edgerton, from The Great Gatsby, plays Ramses 1, the Pharaoh who is believed to have ruled over Egypt during Moses’ time, and who pursued Moses and the Hebrews as they make their escape from Egypt, and came to a watery end in the famous Parting of the Red Sea. Sigourney Weaver (Ellen Ripley – Aliens)

plays Ramses mother, while John Turturro playsSeti, his father. Oscar-winning actor Ben Kingsley, who portrayed the Moses in a 1995 TV adaptation of the Old Testament story, this time is cast as a Hebrew scholar. After commencing in Tabernas, shooting is mainly set in the wilds of the Sierra Alhamilla mountain range, where a huge set has been built to depict ancient Egypt. Apart from the sheer size, the detail of the sculptures and the architecture created is nothing short of phenomenal. The original draft is by Adam Cooper and Bill Collage, and has been rewritten by Steve Zaillian. The undertaking has secured 500 job contracts, and 43 million euros has been invested by the production company in the region. Ridley’s crew, comprising team of 400 technicians, will stay in Almería until the beginning of December, and further filming will take place in Morocco and Fuerteventura. Can Bale take on the legacy of Charlton Heston, who was what many consider the definitive Moses in the 1956 epic The Ten Commandments? On December 12, 2014, the projected release date, we will see. How to get to the Sierra Alhamilla In the west, the AL110 road leads up from Pechina to the Baños de Sierra Alhamilla. A few kilometres past the A92/N340 junction, towards Tabernas, is a track, not tarmacked, that goes into the northeast part of the Sierra and crosses it all the way to Turrillas; Just beyond the park boundaries in the east is the Níjar-Lucainena de las Torres AL102 road, which passes through some dramatic landscape in the Sierra’s foothills.

image zenmirror.blogspot.com.es

From 1934 until 1978 just 16 teams played in the finals; the 1938 finals were played in France. France got an automatic place as did Italy for winning in 1934. Spain due to its Civil War could not compete. Austria qualified but then the small matter of its unification with Nazi Germany meant that it no longer existed so just 15 teams played. Sweden progressed to the quarter finals without kicking a ball due to Austria disappearing off the map; they then convincingly beat Cuba 8-0. Austrian players were integrated into the German side with disastrous consequences as Germany were eliminated in the first round for the only time in the history of the cup. Italy won the final and then held the cup for 12 years as the 1942 and ‘46 finals never happened due to conflicts across the globe. Italy really did hold the cup as an official hid the cup under his bed in a shoe box to stop it being stolen during the war. The 1950 World Cup was held in Brazil as most European countries were rebuilding after WWII. Germany and Japan were banned from entering as they were under military occupation but conveniently for FIFA the former Axis partner Italy, qualified automatically as holders. Horrifically a year earlier a devastating air crash involving the Italian team Torino killed 31 people including 10 members of the Italian squad. Torino were the giants of Serie A football; winning the last title before war interrupted

Freeware vs Shareware vs Open Source and Why Use It

What are the differences between three models of “free” software, and does it matter which, if any, you use and is it any good? Many of us are actually confusing open source software with two other models of “free” software. So a quick definition to try and clear it up. First on the list is “Shareware” as this has the most restrictions and limitations. “Shareware” was a concept that has been around since the 70’s when I first qualified in computers. The idea is that you can download and try shareware for free, but if you use it, you are supposed to pay for it. To encourage you to “Buy after you try (which was it’s unique selling point), you were offered more “bell’s and whistles” - further functions that make the program what it should have been in the first place. Shareware is sometimes called “Crippleware” for this reason. We, the user’s, don’t have access to the source code and cannot modify it. Strangely, for something with the word share in it, there is also no community where anyone can assist and improve the software. So, shareware is “free” as in a (limited) “Free Sample” at restaurants or grocery stores. Second on the list is “Freeware”. This term has been so overused, it’s meaning is a little fuzzy! So for today, we can consider “freeware” as “Shareware” BUT software, complete and unrestricted, which can be downloaded, used, and copied without restrictions. This is at the heart of the “Free Software Foundation” (Also from the 70’s – where have we all gone wrong?). Finally, my favourite, “Open Source”. This simply means that the source code, (lines of code, usually in pseudo-english, which is processed into something that your computer can understand and follow), is available to all potential users, and they are free to use, modify, and re-distribute the source code. Legally, the “free” of open source refers exclusively to the source code! Having said that it is more usual to get the working program, ready for your system, and support in the form of; access to Blogs / Bulletin Board Services and sometimes the group developing the program! “Open source” advocates like to say that open source software is “free” as in “free speech,” which is true. Since the user has the source code, it’s also usually “free” as in “free lunch,” even if sometimes you’d have to tip the waiter to get good service or pay for the wine. Legally, the difference between freeware and open source is that you can not get hold of the source code. There is no community and no development infrastructure around “Freeware” as there is around “Open Source” software. Thus, while you can use it “as is,” there is no real way to improve it or obtain support for it. In the end, the only difference between shareware and commercial software is that you can download and try shareware for free. Like commercial software, you are ultimately dependent on the developer of shareware for enhancements and support. Next time I am going to examine the high’s and low’s of buying of proprietary software. But if you can’t wait – join me at Jack’s Bar after 12 on Friday and air your views :-) See you then. Shorts for Autumn by Various Writers

The Legacy of Lorna Lovelost by Gary William Murning

The saddest thing I think I can imagine is passing through life without some kind of impact, without leaving a legacy in one form or another. We all contribute. We enrich the lives of others in so many ways. We spend our lives trying to make sense of the world, searching for answers in striving to achieve wisdom but the only certainty in life is that one day, sooner or later, we will die. Murning’s novel explores the fear and isolation of dying in a sensitive but powerful way. It is extremely moving and based firmly in realism. Tobias Lovelost, the lemon who day after day, week after week, month after month survived on his own even after encountering disappointment after disappointment. Like the song says, you still haven’t found what you’re looking for. He was destined to be the man who didn’t say anything, the man who wouldn’t speak up for himself until he met Lorna. She instilled in him the confidence to speak his mind. His personal life, his marriage to Lorna felt wonderful. Lorna loved Tobias unconditionally. She was completely dependable and mutual respect was reciprocated. They had been blissfully married for six years and were seen as the perfect couple. Tobias couldn’t imagine life without Lorna. Meeting her had transformed him. His work was another matter. Methodical and tedious, an exercise in conformity and restraint working for a ruthless boss, Middleton, who bullied and threatened. Tobias rekindled a friendship with eccentric writer Bob Bartholomew and his passionate pumpkin of an artist, Patsy O’Connor, a very down-to-earth, welcoming person who accepted people for who they were. Bob had developed OCDObsessive Compulsive Disorder. Something very strange…A fear of open doors. Closed doors are not a problem just open ones. Jogging on Sundays became a happy ritual for Tobias and Lorna until the misjudging of one of the bollards culminates in Lorna crashing to the ground. An anxious Tobias suggested the hospital for a check-up. Lorna has a routine examination followed by scans which herald the unexpected and shocking news that Lorna has a brain tumour which has affected her sight. She can expect to live up to 12 months with surgery and chemo. Like a bolt out of the blue, the novel explores how they both come to terms with the inevitable. Tobias seems the hardest hit by it all. I felt reality kicking in-unremitting and brutally cold, merciless in its ineradicable integrity. Like a child, I wanted to clamp my hands over my ears- squeezing my eyes shut. He wanted to be innocent, not knowing, in self-denial. Living in the past meant death, living in the future was death in the present. Once he had lost Lorna he believed that his years

in the wilderness would begin again…….. Murning introduces another storyline running concurrently with Tobias and Lorna’s. It contains similar ingredients of tragedy but seeks the permission to hope for a better future. This time it is Bob’s story and begins with a lasting image of a woman falling from his apartment window when he was a child. No screaming, no yelling. Nothing. She just slowly rolled forward-toppling out and down. The truth was that the woman was not actually there. Young Bob did not see her die. His parents had been arguing before his mother finally left, never returning. The young boy had made a mental connection between the woman who had fallen and his mother’s leaving. Accident and conscious decision he called it. It became one and the same. An illusion of his dead mother added to his OCD tipped him off balance mentally and whilst Tobias is trying to deal with his own trauma as Lorna’s condition deteriorates, Bob moves on a rollercoaster of a journey to discover the truth about his mother and a woman he comes to know as Eliza Jones who bequeathed a map, a key, a photo and a letter to her son. It becomes a liberating experience for Bob, freedom from burden. A quest. For Lorna and Tobias, a return to the moors, revisiting a favourite haunt of their childhood, conjuring up wonderful memories proves to be an emotionally happy time until an image of Barghest reminds them that death is waiting round the corner and time is running out. Eliza Jones’ legacy is awesome, leaving Bob speechless and in tears. Lorna’s legacy is vital for Tobias’ future survival and happiness. Katarina was introduced to stop Tobias from falling apart. I needed you to unearth that quality within yourself. That strength and lack of indecision, the faith in yourself that only you could truly find. Doesn’t hope rely on faith, so that in spite of tragedy we are hopeful that there is something worth waiting for? When you read it you will then understand why permission to hope is so relevant and having faith in oneself is the key to the future. Enjoy. Publisher: GWM Publications. ISBN: 978-0-9570636-3-1.

MOTORING

Range Rover

SOURCE: http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/

A few years ago, Greenpeace lambasted Land Rover for building gas-guzzling SUVs. Since then we’ve had more efficient powertrains, engine-cutting stop-start systems and weight-slashing aluminium bodyshells. But nothing promises to cull emissions quite like this: the new Range Rover Hybrid, a 2394kg off-roader with a potent V6 diesel engine that emits just 169g/km – 27g/km less than today’s substantially less powerful Range Rover TDV6 and a whopping 130g/km less than the lastgeneration Td6 that so riled those greens. We’re driving late prototypes today ahead of Land Rover taking them on a trek from Solihull to India, hence the expedition graphics and roof rack.

What are the hybrid’s compromises? The Hybrid uses a 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel engine which, when combined with its electric boost, yields 335bhp/516lb ft and promises 44.1mpg and 169g/km. This promises comparable performance to a TDV8 Range Rover (334bhp/516lb ft) with parsimony to shame the entry-level TDV6 (37.7mpg/196g/ km). The Hybrid can also drive on electric power alone for up to a mile at speeds of

30mph or less. There is no petrol version, Land Rover saying the Hybrid is a European-focussed vehicle rather than one aimed at the burgeoning American and Chinese markets that’ll lap up the Porsche Cayenne Hybrid. Only time will tell if that’s a mistake. The system works like this: a 35kW electric motor is packaged within the ZF eight-speed gearbox, sitting between the ratios and the engine itself and taking the place of the torque converter. Meanwhile, the fuel tank is smaller to make way for the lithium-ion battery pack, which powers the electric motor. Back off the throttle and the coasting engine charges the battery. Brake lightly and all the retardation comes from the regenerative braking system, which also feeds charge back to the battery. Brake harder and a blend of brake-pad friction and regenerative braking combines to stop you.

What’s the Range Rover Hybrid’s spec?

Just two, as far as we can see: the hybrid tech adds 120kg to the kerbweight and the price rockets past the TDV6’s £71k and TDV8’s £78k to land right in range-topping Supercharged V8 territory at approximately £100k. But because the Range Rover was designed from the off to be a hybrid, there are no packaging compromises related to the battery pack: passenger room, boot space and sparewheel provision are all unaltered, and even the gearbox is no larger. Possible side-effects of the smaller fuel tank are also negated thanks to the improved fuel economy: the range is said to remain the same as a TDV6 at around 400 miles depending on driving style. Likewise, off-road capability is unaltered – and, as we’ll discover, even enhanced. The battery pack is shielded by boron steel to protect from bumps and scrapes; approach, departure and break-over angles are unchanged; and Land Rover claims you can even jack the Range Rover up right under the battery without consequence.

ITV ORIHUELA RFC AT THE DOUBLE

A perfect start to the season for ITV Orihuela RFC cadets and B team away to UCAM. The cadets were first up against the home side in a very tight game where you never knew who was going to win, as it ebbed and flowed from one side to the other. UCAM going in at half time 105 up, so Orihuela were playing catch up against a far bigger team. After some excellent play by the backs with the forwards making the hard metres they managed to grind out a bonus point win coming out on top 2420. A well deserved win away to an excellent team. Next up was the turn of ITV Orihuela RFC B team, this season is the first time they have had a B team, and is made up mainly of vets and new players to the game this year. Orihuela surprised everyone and came out of the blocks at a rapid rate of knots notching up two converted tries by the backs in the first 10 minutes leaving the UCAM team completely shell shocked. The resulting tries and for the rest of the game were the result of a solid defence together with the forwards giving a solid

platform for the backs to work from. Before half time Orihuela RFC had already got their try bonus point and were well on the way to a big score. Unfortunately, for UCAM just before half time they were reduced to 13 men through a number of injuries and one serious one, looking at it, as the player went off in a neck brace. Half time score was 31-5 to Orihuela. With the second half been a little one sided UCAM put up a brave fight and battled their hearts out and even managed to get a second consolation try, which they deserved for their efforts. Orihuela RFC B eventually ran out 74-10 winners with Ivan getting 3 tries, Alexi 4, Anuar 2, Alvaro, Sergio and another Ivan

one a piece, and Alexi with 7 conversions. The next game will be away for the first team against Lorca on 9 November, while the second team is on 16 November against San Javier at home. Also new in the area of Guardamar is a beach fitness training, with Trainer John, starting at 18.00 on Monday’s behind the Guardamar Beach Hotel, all ages and fitness level, so ideal for getting your general fitness together. Also I will be down at The Steakhouse in Rojales on Thursday, and at Moncayo Market on Saturday, so for all your rugby information come down and see me at these places and get some ideas for Xmas presents. Training is at the Miguel Hernandez University ground at 20.15 on Tuesday and Thursday for the seniors and juveniles. The juniors start at 18.15. So if you are interested, dig out those rugby boots and come along and see for yourself what it is like. New players are always welcome no matter what age or skill level you are. Last Sunday 5th placed Torry entertained Novelda who lay in 12th place. Novelda got off to a stuttering start to the season but were unbeaten in their last 5 games and keeping a clean sheet in their last 4 games. Torry were unbeaten at home and had yet to concede a goal. Torry made one change from the previous wee bringing in Alberto for Micro on the left flank. Torrevieja: Carrión, Vicente, Dani Lucas, Alexis, Rafa, Dani Meseguer, Pastor (Micro 58 ‘), Burguillos (Paul 81’), Rafa Gomez , Alberto, Carrasco (Manu Amores 86 ‘). Not Used: Carlos Moreno and Valdeolivas On a sunny late afternoon in front of a good crowd swelled by the presence of budding young stars of the future and their parents from the Junior Strikers football academy, the game got underway and was even in the first 10 minutes. Novelda nearly capitalised on a poor clearance from Rafa and worked the ball to one of their forwards who unleashed a powerful shot which struck the foot of the post and was then hacked clear. Torry responded almost immediately when a ball in from Alberto found Dani Lucas whose shot on target was blocked and from the rebound the follow –up shot from Pastor was again blocked. On 15 minutes a well struck volley from the Novelda no. 6 produced a spectacular save from Carrion. It was end to end stuff. Alberto

then tried his luck with a volley which just dipped over the top. On 27 minutes a well flighted free-kick from Alberto found Dani Meseguer unmarked just beyond the far post and instead of heading on goal Dani headed across goal and the ball was cleared. On 40 minutes a cross from Pastor found Dani Lucas who turned his man and fired powerfully just the wrong side of the post into the sidenetting. On 42 minutes Rafa had to make a timely last ditch intervention, at the expense of a corner, to prevent a Novelda forward getting in and having a clear run on goal. Rafa then had a chance at the other end with a header from a Dani Lucas cross which he put over the top. Novelda started the stronger in the second half and pegged Torry back but as the game wore on the Novelda threat dissipated and Torry started to press Novelda onto the backfoot. After 65 minutes a good cross from Dani Lucas was headed just over the top by Rafa Gomez from a good position. A minute later a thunderous strike from Rafa Gomez from just outside the area produced a sprawling full length dive and save from the Novelda keeper. From the resultant corner Alexis struck the ball on target from close range and the keeper made a magnificent reaction save to prevent a Torry goal. Torry finished the stronger but couldn’t find a break-through and 5 minutes from the end Carrion had to get down low

to save a powerful daisy cutter from the edge of the box. The game finished goal-less which was probably a fair result on the day. Novelda extended their unbeaten record to 6 with no goals conceded in the last 5 games and Torry preserved their unbeaten home record to 6 with no goals conceded. The game was played at high intensity and was fairly contested by both sides. The referee tried to let the game flow and wasn’t whistle and card happy which is usually the case here in Spain. Yellow cards were picked by Dani Lucas and Dani Meseguer and also Valdeolivas for protesting about a foul which wasn’t given Torry’s way from the bench. This weekend Torry are away to Tercera new-comers Cullera who have got off to a decent start to the season and are very strong at home having won 4 and drawn 1 so far. It won’t be easy for Torry but they need at least a point to stay in or around the top 4 in the table. To catch up on up to date information about Torry visit the Torry Army website www.fctorrevieja.net or the clubs website www. futbolclubtorrevieja.net. A reasonably happy Darrylldinho, following his adopted team in Spain secure a point and maintain their unbeaten home record with still no goals conceded.

But at the other side it was one attack from Sporting after another. After half an hour right winger Abdel was replaced by center striker Dani. Just before halftime Sporting could reach 0-2 . A header from Ahmed hit the post. In the second half Sporting managed to make no use of the advantage situation, there were big gaps in the midfield but especially Pesi and Juan where very sloppy in the passing. It is clear that this very young team still has a lot to learn. The better chances remained for Sporting. Among other Perri , Moha , Boudia & Dani , could finish the match , but the players failed to end the match. Eventually it was from a counter attack Boudia that made the 0-2. “ All in all very deserved “ according to coach Oosterhof . “ It had to happen once the boys train well and the level goes up every week “ says Jelco Oosterhof Next week : Sporting Camposol - Javali Nuevo at 12 o’clock Municipal Mazarron

Villamartin, 23rd October, 2013 The sun had hardly got out of bed before 36 golfers turned up at Villamartin to try their hardest to knock a small white ball into a small hole amidst the squawking of the parakeets that frequent this course. It must be said that, at last, Villamartin is back to its best with the greens and fairways in very good condition; however, there are some tree branches that do need cutting back, especially on the 9th

FAIRWAYZ GOLF

Good turn out today Thursday 24thOctober at Vistabella, for Fairwayz Golf Society day out. We played our usual standard format of individual Stableford. The weather was great, in fact fantastic for this time of year, and the course was it’s usual good standard. Good to see our Captain and handicap secretary back in action after both having suffered some health problems, i think it’s to do with us all getting older! Well done lads. We postponed the presentation of the cup for the singles competition, due to the winner being away, hopefully in two weeks time he will be present to receive the trophy. Some good scores were presented today, and i’m not just saying that because i won! Well ok i am. Scores were as follows:Gold Category. 1st - Steve Lawrence 42pts. 2nd - John Saunders 35pts. It certainly didn’t look too promising early on with more than a fair portion of the sky looking decidedly angry……still, as is often the case, it soon dispersed and we were once again blessed with a lovely warm day. It’s hard to believe that it’s nearly Halloween! However the sprinklers had given the course a good soaking over the hours of darkness and the rather damp conditions slowed things down considerably with little or no run causing most shots to stop pretty near to where they landed. Having twelve four-balls teeing off every 8 or so minutes meant over an hour and a half to get us all underway. Wouldn’t it be novel if each group reported into the clubhouse some four hours later at 8 minute intervals? But, sadly, that never seems to happen due to a multitude of reasons, some of which are acceptable but many of which are often plain selfish and thoughtless. We should all remember the golden rule – Keep up, you are behind the group in front NOT in

front of the group behind! Still……we should be thankful we all made it in before dark! NTP’s went to Noel Bannon (Hole 3), Theo Boulhouwer (Hole 6), Keith Wickham (Hole 13) and Dominic Ralphs (Hole 16). The three top visitors in ascending order were Harold Stevenson (31), Chris Aitchison (34) and Peter Devlin (36). The bronze category saw Mick Roscoe in 4th (29), Norman McBride in 3rd (31), John Sorensen in 2nd (32) and top slot to Keith Wraithmell with 35. Silver category’s top players were Norman Padmore in 4th (31), Joost Boulhouwer in 3rd (33), Alan Gilbert in 2nd (36) and Mike Jordan in 1st with the only score on the day under par (38). Gold’s winners were Shay Cunningham in 4th (31), Phil de Lacy in 3rd (33), Noel Bannon in 2nd (34) and John Osborne maintaining his excellent form in 1st spot with 35.
