Rescuers try to reach a two week old baby Taxi gets stuck in flood trapped in a house in Berkshire water after ignoring
The youngster is among the residents of Wraysbury, on the banks of the River Thames, who are being evacuated from their homes by a team of volunteer flood wardens. Further upstream in Datchet, the military was drafted in to build emergency barriers from sandbags in a desperate attempt to hold back the water. Around 400 flood warnings and alerts have been issued by the Environment Agency, including 16 severe warnings, meaning there is a danger to life. The Thames Valley is now among the areas most at risk, with the river at record levels in places including Marlow Lock, Romney Lock, Walton and Ditton Island. A number of rail lines have been flooded, with major
disruption on some First Great Western, CrossCountry, Southeastern and South West Trains routes.
Further east, the swollen River Thames is predicted to burst its banks in several places between Datchet and Shepperton Green, including Hamm Court and Chertsey in Surrey. Around 2,500 homes are at risk, according to the Environment Agency, which said river levels in the area “are extremely high and are forecast to continue to rise.” Forecasters have warned there will be little respite from the hurricane-force winds and lashing rain, with further storms expected to cross the country during the week. The Met Office said river levels are expected to continue rising along the Thames, Severn and the Stour in Dorset in the coming days. Two other severe flood warnings remain in the South West, which has seen significant flooding especially on the Somerset Levels. The Ministry of Defence has put 1,600 personnel on six hours’ notice to help in the south of England, and another 20,000 sandbags are ready to be deployed to communities in the area. A Ministry of Defence spokesman said: “Military personnel, currently mostly Royal Marines, continue to provide support in Somerset in areas affected by floods as part of cross-Government and multi-agency relief efforts A kayaker - a man in his 30s - went missing in the River Usk at Llangynidr in Powys, Mid Wales. Dyfed-Powys Police, the Welsh Ambulance Service, Brecon Mountain Rescue Team and the coastguard were involved in the search.
road closed sign
A Taxi driver got his vehicle stuck in flood water after ignoring a road closed sign in Eton in the early hours of the morning. The car got stuck in Pococks Lane, Eton, at around 1am. The fire services from Slough were called to the scene, but by the time they had arrived, the driver and his passenger had managed to free themselves and wade out of the water. The driver then had the cheek to ask the firefighters to tow his car free; they told him that rather than tying up fire service resources, he should call a breakdown recovery service.
The Environment Agency claims that its handling of flood defences is a ‘success.’
David Jordan, director of operations for the Environment Agency, said that the protection of over a million homes by flood defences contrasts with 5,000 flooded homes, which he called “individual tragedies”. “We need to recognise that 1.3 million other properties would have flooded if these flood defences had not been built,” Mr Jordan said. “That is the success story, if you like, that we are talking about.” But Tory MP Ian Liddell-Grainger, whose Bridgwater and West Somerset constituency has been among the worst hit areas, called the flooding “a tragedy and a disaster”. “What a stupid bloody man,” he added. “This is an out of touch, out of control quango which is stuck in a time warp of arrogance and stupidity.”

NekNominate – the latest online craze
A woman stripped down to her underwear in a supermarket before downing a can of beer for a NekNominate challenge.
Rebecca Dagley, 19, walked into an Asda supermarket in Fosse Park, Leicester, in a beige trench coat. She walked around the store before coming to a stop in the fruit and vegetable aisle, taking a can of Stella Artois from her pocket, removing her coat, stripping down to just her bra, knickers and suspenders, and then downing the can of beer in front of shocked shoppers. The act was captured on film by a giggling friend - who at the end of the footage nominates three more friends to take part. This is NekNominate, an online craze where youngsters are chosen by their peers to down - or ‘neck’ – strong drinks before challenging others to film a more shocking video within the next 24 hours. The craze started in Australia last month and has now swept the globe with thousands of British youngsters taking part.
The act is often done in bizarre and dangerous circumstances - Sean Bisset, 18, downed a mixture of wine and gin before plunging in to a freezing harbour. Last weekend two young men died in Ireland as a result of taking part. Ross Cummins, 22, was found unconscious in a house in Dublin in the early hours of Saturday morning and died later in hospital amid reports he was drinking spirits at the time of his death. Hours later, the body of Jonny Byrne, 19, was discovered floating in the river at Milford Bridge in County Carlow after apparently jumping in as part of a nomination.
Participants often upload the footage onto the internet. Last week, footage was posted of one young man from Derby drinking a live goldfish as part of the craze.
The game has been condemned by experts. Dr Sarah Jarvis, medical adviser to alcohol education charity Drinkaware, said: ‘Young people often say they feel peer pressure to drink to fit in, but competitions to drink excessively in a short space of time can be dangerous and this should not come as a surprise. Quite apart from the risk of accident or injury as a result of drinking to excess, there is another aspect to these online drinking games which is the ‘cyber shame’ some young people may experience.’
In some instances, teens can be seen downing ‘dirty pints’ - or concoctions of alcohol and other substances - or large amounts of strong spirits as part of the dare.
‘Drinkaware’ research shows nearly half of 18 to 24-year-olds admitted ‘untagging’ drunk photos of themselves on Facebook that they didn’t want others to see.’

A CORNUCOPIA OF LOVE SONGS
ort Songs from the pen of Bob Dylan, Elton John, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Jerome Kern and Ivor Novello, amongst many others, were performed to high level of excellence within the grand auditorium of the Orihuela Costa Resort Hotel, La Zenia, on Saturday, January 25th.. With matinee and evening concerts playing to nearly full houses, audiences were treated to the wonderful voices of Melody Makers International and Cantemos! Children’s Choir. Nigel Hopkins arrangement of Franz Lehar’s “Love Unspoken” from The Merry Widow, was performed as a duet, when Nigel left the baton behind, to join Mary
Beer on stage. Cantemos! Children’s Choir visited theatre land, with “Can you feel the love tonight” from Lion King, “One hand, one heart” from West Side Story, along with “A time for us” from Romeo & Juliet, arranged in this instance by Nigel Hopkins. The inimitable Eric Berg, bought David Heneker’s “If the rain’s got to fall”, from Half a Sixpence, to the footlights, accompanied by more umbrellas than one could shake a ferrule at. A well deserved standing ovation bought Saturday’s evening’s performance to a close. The summer concert is eagerly awaited.
AIRPORT EXCLUSIVE
My normally reliable contact, deep within the service tunnels beneath Corvera International Airport, tells me that September 18th., has been earmarked as “Grand Opening Day” for this multimillion euro aerodrome. This news though, has not gone down well at Catral International Airport, where Antonio, Airfield Supervisor, tells me his wife Maria, who has been very busy recently, knitting a new air sock for the c o n t r o l tower, has d o w n e d needles. So there it is, September 18th., and you read it here first, in your Sol Times.
SORTING THE RED TAPE
The Diputacio’n de Alicante (Foreigners Section) drops me some information regarding their new web site. From opening a new retail outlet, to the best way in obtaining a Residencia, the answers are here. Hospitals, Social Services along with tax payment, here in Spain is explained. How and when is the best time to exchange you driving licence to a Spanish version. All aspects of driving legally, here in Spain, is explained. Tap out the following web site; http://www. ciudadanosextrajeros.es/ click on the Union flag, then again on “Publications” and information on all topics will unfold. Most excellent.
ORDER IN COURT!
At the latest Plenary meeting, in the Town Hall in Pilar De La Horadada, Marie Luisa Espin was sworn in as a new Justice Of The Peace, to sit within the town’s Magis t rat e s Court. Mayor Jose’ Fidel Ros Samper, commented that the main qualifications for the post of magistrate in Pilar, was to have a knowledge of the people, the neighbourhood, and most importantly, wisdom and common sense. Qualifications such as common sense and wisdom lacking, to an extent, within the magisterial system in the United Kingdom, and blatantly so with some Magistrates, Recorders and Judges that sit within hallowed halls, and adjudicate on human rights issues. Perhaps the judicial system in Spain, might pass a few ideas to the U.K.. Mayor Jose’ took time to thank all the applicants that applied for the position. Mind how you go.

local sherry and watch Morocco twinkling away in the distance. In August, the two-week festival is wonderfully colourful, with music on every street corner. There’s minimal tourism, the climate is cool and the townspeople are very friendly.
Alhama de Granada
La Taha de Pitres, Alpujarras
These small, pretty villages high in the Sierra Nevada national park are a few hours’ drive from Málaga, but offer a window on to a different Andalucía. The villages are connected by ancient paths, known as caminos, which, along with the long-distance footpath GR-7, make this an excellent base for stunning scenic walks. Visit in late September or early November to forage the glut of wild almonds, walnuts, chestnuts and figs, and if you’re there in early November, don’t miss the Fiesta de las Castañas (feast of chestnuts) in Mecina Bombarón.
Vejer de la Frontera
This is a stunning hilltop Moorish town 9km from the empty golden beaches of the Costa de la Luz. Wander round the ancient cobbled streets, eat delicious tapas in one of the many street cafes. Sit on the terrace of the hippy chic Hotel la Casa del Califa with a glass of chilled
This is one of the most beautiful places in Spain, in the fertile Poniente Granadino in southern Andalucía – incredible light, authentic fabulous food, great people. It isn’t far from the airport at Málaga, but it is a million miles from the pubs and full English breakfasts on the coast. There are churches, lovely squares, a spectacular gorge, a red Moorish fort, an Arabic quarter, fresh food shops and dozens of cafe-bars and restaurants all in easy walking distance. The town is famous throughout Spain for its thermal baths – hot therapeutic water bubbles up into four thermal pools next to the river.
Calle Granada, Málaga
People pass through Málaga, but they perhaps don’t know that it has two fabulous museums, an impressive cathedral, an Arab fortress and palace as good as any outside Granada, clear blue seas and miles of sandy beaches lined with chiringuito bars serving fresh sardines. The top street is Calle
Granada, where the Malagueños go to visit favourite tapas bars. There are many, but chief among them are: La Campana – tiny, crowded and noisy – which serves superb fresh fish at knock-down prices; El Piyayo, across the road, more upmarket, with seats outside; and the renowned El Pimpi, a vast, rambling place full of Spanish character. Try them all.
Etnosur at Alcalá la Real
For three days every July (15-17 July in 2011), the town of Alcalá la Real is home to a vibrant multicultural festival of music, theatre, circus, cinema, exhibitions, workshops, conferences, crafts, food, and much more! The town is only 60km from Jaén and 55km from Granada – a good bus service runs from both these cities – there’s a good selection of hotels and restaurants, as well as a reasonably priced camping area. The festival attracts a host of performers from across the globe every year, and all of the events are absolutely free.
Escaleras San Cristóbal, Granada
You arrive at the top entrance to the stairway, with an epic view over the south of the city. Descending the first flight of steps you spot a chameleon clinging to the wall in black paint. Wandering around the corner, you see colours erupt, an octopus woman lazes down a full flight while a Ghibliesque character skirts across a draughts board. Whales spurt, monkeys play and a pregnant Africa embraces the world. Cunningham-inspired vistas are played off against the smiles and eyes of the Cheshire cat. You realise that standing here, at the bottom of a staircase in southern Spain, you are witness to something very special.
Cortes de Baza
This is a great village – we stayed in a cave house, of which there are several around. The best bit was arriving (unplanned) on the penultimate weekend of August when the festival in honour of the patron saints – San Cosme and San Damián – was in full swing with a small funfair, outdoor dancing to live bands, religious and other parades and processions, massive communal meals. The final “event” seems to be little old ladies throwing buckets of water over young men! Brilliant – oh, and there’s free tapas in all the bars.
Costa de la Luz
From Cádiz to Tarifa you will find miles of white sandy beaches with turquoise ocean backed by pine forests and dotted with laid-back fishing villages where find bars serve the freshest seafood accompanied by chilled sherry from Jerez de la Frontera. Places to check out are Tarifa, the windsurfing capital and gateway to Africa; Bolonia, which is a well-preserved Roman city; Caños de Meca, a hippy hangout since the 1960s where little has changed; and Conil, a tuna fishing village. Finally you should see the provincial capital Cádiz, with its Spanish colonial vibes. You could be in Havana! Source: http://www.theguardian.com/

Courtyard Living Adding a New Courtyard... If your home is already built, add a courtyard onto the existing house structure. The only costs you will incur are for one wall (the one that will no longer be shared with the rest of the house) and maybe a hallway required to connect the new structure to the existing house. You can then enclose the courtyard using a fence or dense hedge; then, of course, there is the cost of the courtyard itself. If you plan to add a courtyard, consider how it is oriented to the sun and how you will enter and exit from the house and garden. The more entries, the more you are likely to use the space. Enhancing an Existing Courtyard... If your home is already built, plan a courtyard when adding onto the house. This may not add as much cost to the project as you might think. For example, when adding a study, extra bedroom, or even an attached garage, you can add the same structure 15 or 20 feet from the house. The additional costs you will incur are for one wall (the one that will no longer be shared with the rest of the house) and the hallway required to connect the new structure to the existing house. You can then enclose the courtyard using a fence or dense hedge. Then, of course, there is the cost of the courtyard itself. If you plan to add a courtyard, consider how it is oriented to the sun and how you will enter and exit from the house and garden. The more entries, the more you are likely to use the space. Be sure the courtyard paving, no matter the material used, drains away from the house. Also consider ways to provide a partial canopy by extending the rafters of the roof over the new structure.
Solid is more visual than literal. A vine-covered trellis or a hedge may close in a small space (perhaps less than 10 feet square) without making it feel claustrophobic. An open roof or canopy adds even more sense of enclosure. Whatever structure you use should allow plenty of light into the courtyard so there is no mistaking its feeling of welcome. A retractable
awning is one way to add enclosure. A temporary roof that covers the courtyard completely in winter also extends the time you can use the area and protects the plants within.
Styles: The style and look of the courtyard is to some extent predetermined by the walls that define it. However, these walls can be altered to create the setting you want. image: www.hgtv.com
Consider the following design aspects when refurbishing an existing courtyard. Enclosure: A distinguishing characteristic of a courtyard is having the space feel as though it has four “solid” walls.

Scale: An aspect of design you do have control over is scale. The absence of a roof makes the space feel bigger than it is. A grouping of tables and chairs that feels comfortable on an open patio may look cramped in a walled courtyard. Scale also comes into play when selecting plants. In terms of both design and horticulture, it works better to have fewer, larger pots than many little pots that dry out quickly and blow over. Views: The main concern for a courtyard is usually the view into it rather than out of it. As you design, examine views from any windows (including those overhead) and doors that enter the courtyard. Also, if you have an attractive view from the courtyard, consider cutting a window in a wall of the courtyard to frame it.

When we lift (and strain) or have a fall, with an impact injury, it is the disc that is sprained, which, if left alone, will cause spinal problems later in life. When we are young and sustain an injury, the pain will often subside quickly, so we don’t feel the need to seek treatment. If we do, it is often a visit to the usual GP, who may refer the patient to a course of physiotherapy. All too often, the physiotherapist is not trained in the same way as a chiropractor, to do chiropractic manipulation – which is a science in itself – therefore, as around 90% of pain goes away within 10 days, with or without medication, we don’t bother to treat it. This is why we sometimes end up with disc problems, as a result of untreated back injuries. So, we walk for years with a non-functioning spine, unaware of any lasting damage. The conventional medical system does not use the chiropractic profession to detect these problems at the first stage. The old saying prevention is better than cure, is so true, but so often, everyone leaves their situation until it is so bad that they come to the chiropractor for help when nothing else seems to work.

range of injuries. Low level lasers can strengthen and heal damaged cells. They work by supplying energy to the body in the form of penetrating light. The tissues and cells absorb this energy where it is used to accelerate the normal rate of healing. It brings vital nutrients and fluids to cartilage and discs and increases blood flow to the injured area. Laser treatment has been particularly helpful in the t r e a t m e n t of stubborn, persistent and “difficult to treat” conditions including chronic back pain, neck pain and other joint and muscle pains. Laser therapy is safe, non invasive, non toxic, easily applied, highly effective and has no negative side effects.
*Treatment for Osteoarthritis of the joints: Dr Madsen also has many years experience using Shockwave therapy. Over time, calcification can build up affecting the joints of the shoulders, hips and knees. Shockwave therapy removes the calcification that builds up around joints which helps to release trapped nerves resulting in more movement and less pain. Patients are then treated with laser therapy, which helps to regenerate new cell growth If you would like to read more about the treatments and how they work, please visit the website: www.chiropractor-benijofar.es or email us: info@chiropractor-benijofar.es To book a consultation appointment we are open Monday/ Wednesday/Friday 10:00 – 13:30 or afternoons, Tuesday/Thursday 15:00 – 18:00. Declutter wardrobe
So many clothes but nothing to wear? It’s time for your ultimate wardrobe detox. Here are our top restyling rules
8 rules for decluttering
1. Pull everything out of your wardrobe and divide into categories such as tops, dresses, trousers and skirts. If you have lots of things that look similar, streamline – do you really need seven pairs of black trousers? 2. Give everything a close inspection. Does it have stains, tears, missing buttons, pilling, hanging hems? If so, is it worth the time and money repairing it? 3. Know your body shape. Hang on to clothes that accentuate positives and hide flaws. Keep only your current dress size in your wardrobe and give away what doesn’t fit anymore. 4. If you haven’t worn something for well over 12 months, ditch it – even if it was pricey. Sell it, donate it, or give it to a friend who will make good use of it.
5. Don’t hold on to things because you think they’ll come back into fashion. Even if trends do make a comeback, nothing comes back the same way. Get rid! 6. When debating about whether or not to keep an item, ask yourself: which is worth more, the object or the wasted space the unflattering item takes up in your wardrobe? If it’s the latter, you know what to do! 7. If you have clothes that have hardly been worn, why not sell them on eBay? If they still have the tags on, you may get a higher price, as people will pay more money for unused items. 8. Remember, a streamlined, wellorganised wardrobe will make getting dressed so much more fun and a whole lot easier.
HAIR-RAISING FUND-RAISER
Mick (the grip) Reeve had a hair-raising fund-raising experience on Saturday 1 February at The Cut Above Hairdressers in Villa Martin. Mick had all his long golden locks cut off raising money for the charity Reach Out. As yet the amount raised has to be collected and counted from those who have sponsored him. A further surprise for Mick was when Keith Carter Chairman of The Orihuela Costa and District Branch of The Royal British Legion presented a trophy to Mick in recognition of his fund-raising organisational skills within the golfing fraternity raising over €5,000 towards the 2013 Poppy Appeal.

braben’s blog... I was watching a video of how the internet and the “Free Software Foundation” started and the presenter said that “Passwords didn’t exist (within the computer world) because they weren’t wanted or needed until the bosses forced them upon us to protect their secrets”. This got me wondering what passwords really are and, more importantly, are they absolutely necessary. Presented today are my rambling thoughts on the subject. The use of, and need for, passwords goes back before the birth of Christ and can be found in the Egyptian “book of the dead” as they were used to navigate the afterlife to allow passage away from the malevolent Egyptian gods. From here passwords were designed and used within the military! History records the ancient Roman armies having used passwords as have the ancient Greek armies and just about every army from then on. A password is a single word consisting of a number of characters. These can be CAPITALS and lower case), numbers and certain printable characters. Beyond the password is something called a “passphrase”. This is simply either, a string of passwords, a favourite passage from a book, a line from a movie or an inspired piece of non-sense. How good (Strong) is your password? Allow me to offer a silly example that will help understanding the mind of the Cracker who is intent on getting onto your machine. “Hello, My name is Fred Flintstone. I have a wife Wilma and daughter Pebbles who has a dog D’Fer.“(Yes I know it was Dino but why not D,Fer Dog!). Most people will use a familiar word or name as their password. Knowing this simple error of judgement gives my attacker 5 chances to get into my computer (Fred, Flintstone, Wilma, Pebble,
D,Fer)! This will not take very long. The worst and most used password is “password” followed by “123456” Now they only need 7 attempts to access my system. What are the fatal flaws with passwords? 1. Too Short; 2. Too Personal – family names, pets names, etc. 3. Single case and 4. Easily Remembered – this one is a 2 edged sword! As you may have already guessed there are “Trev’s Rules” on how do we get around these problems? 1. Use a password with a minimum of 8 characters these should include - UPPER CASE, lower case and numbers. Remember that the longer the password, the greater the combination and the more time it will take to crack! 2. Don’t use personal identifying information – the address that you lived 36 years ago can still be found out and tried! 3. Have some way of keeping the password available in a not-obvious place “just in case” BUT don’t write on it “PASSWORD”. 4. There are many websites that off to test your password and as the web is not totally secure yet, Maybe you might use one of the many wonderful, free password generator and checkers that are out there. Try “password_ generator_checker_2.exe” in google – it is small but gives a good indication as to the quality of your password. Blame NCIS character “Gibbs” for this predilection towards rules! One last trick that is recommended at the ACC (Albox Computer Club). Go to “http://www. passwordcard.org/en” where you will find a “credit card” that you should print out with it you get simple instructions on how this card works. Then as the page says “Enjoy your new feeling of safety and peace of mind... :-)

TV Dinners
We’ve got a problem with our television. We keep getting programmes that I’m sure weren’t meant for release, but have somehow slithered under the door and made it to the screens, well at least our screen. There are about 768 channels that we have access to and usually we end up watching a DVD because the programmes are, well, just awful Do you remember Eldorado, the soap opera about expats in Spain that was a bit of a disaster at the time? Critics, viewers and several distant alien races never had a kind word to say about it. Well I think that if it was shown now it may be in line for BAFTA-does that stand for Brings Awfully Feeble Television Again! Right now you can’t switch your television on without seeing a chef in action cooking some exotic dish or other. I don’t mind TV chefs, in fact I grew up with Fanny Craddock. Not in the same house, but watching her on TV with her husband Johnny. Nobody ever seemed sure what Johnny contributed to the programme, a little like the guy in Wham who wasn’t George Michael. My dad often tried cooking her recipes at home but regularly seemed disappointed that they turned out looking like Fanny’s. I didn’t know why he would be so disappointed at the time, thinking, in my innocence, they were supposed to look like hers! But there’s a guy on TV now who just confirms what I said about awful programmes. His idea of a top recipe tip is for us to cook cow’s udders, or maybe a little pig’s brain. Now just who he expects to go leaping along the aisles of the Mercadona, hunting down the last remaining pack of udders so they can race home to perfect the dish, before having friends to dinner, is quite beyond any sort of understanding.
Graham is married to Helen and has a daughter, Alice. He lives part of the year near Albox, but works in Qatar, teaching. If you wish to contact Graham regarding this article email: helenandg@yahoo. co.uk
Or maybe not. Who would volunteer to appear on a TV game show completely naked? No not me either, but some people did on a show called Naked Jungle-which has been regularly voted as the worst ever UK programme. I have to admit I didn’t see it-and count myself very fortunate indeed-but it strikes me that if you’re batty enough to go in front of cameras and an audience of millions naked, then you may well be tempted to dig into udders. Ugh! I’m off to the chippy!
Bigger Bullfighting Museum Plan Gets A Goring From Opposition Parties
The mayor is on record as saying he will continue to give his personal support, as well as that of his party, to what he considers to be an integral part of the social and historical culture of Roquetas and Andalucia. He made the statement at the launch of last year’s line-up of matadors for the annual corrida during the fiesta in July. Interestingly, this years bullfighting event may well not go ahead, although the mayors office is tight lipped as to whether this is the case. As with so many contentious issues in the
municipality, the disagreement comes down to what each party considers to be the best way of spending the annual budget. The proposed extension plans to the museum will cost in excess of half as million euros; money which the opposition coalition says should be spent on more useful projects. They point out that many local people are opposed to bullfighting and that the same people are not opposed to road improvement, education and learning development and employment schemes. Many critics of the Popular Party (the ruling local government party), say that after almost twenty years in power, they are losing touch with the needs of the community and spending too much time - and ultimately too much money – on schemes which don’t reflect the views of the majority of taxpayers. Ricardo Fernandez, spokesman for the opposition coalition, said that, “For too long the Popular

New plans to extend the Bullfighting Museum in Roquetas have come under fire from members of the United Left opposition party. The proposed extension would almost double the existing space. The museum at the Plaza de Toros in the centre of town was opened five years ago and was heavily criticised at the time. The local government, led by Mayor Gabriel Amat, was accused of spending tax payers’ money on the highly controversial issue of bullfighting, which is thought by many to be an outdated and cruel ‘sport’. It has been banned in many areas of Spain.

Q. A solicitor spoke the other day on television about the new directive 650/2012 explaining that is was essential that people retired in a country different of their country of nationality within the European Union revise their wills. What is all this about? A. This regulation of the EU 650/2012 deals with different things, but the reason English citizens need to look at their will is that this new Regulation of the EU establishes that: When a person dies resident in one country of the European Union but national of another, the law applicable to his inheritance will be the one that he/she has established expressly in his will and not the one established by the International Norms of each country (which may be in conflict). This is good news because an English national living in Spain can establish that he/she wishes English Law to rule his/her inheritance and this will avoid any possible risk of claims from children against the spouse on the basis of the system of obligatory heirs established in Spanish law, which has always caused worry and concern in the case of children from different marriages etc. If a person passes away after the 17th of August of 2015, unless he has said differently on his will the legislation applicable to his inheritance will be that of his country of last residence. This is very important for English people living in Spain, because under Spanish law you cannot leave everything to your wife as 2/3 of the estate have to be left to children. In other words if you are resident of Spain, have children and do not establish on your will that you wish English Law (your national law ) to rule your inheritance your Spouse will not be allowed to receive his/her full
inheritance as it would contradict the Spanish rules of obligatory heirs which would be applicable automatically because of the new regulation. Consequences: 1. If you have children but have made a will leaving all assets to your spouse, make sure that you have clearly stated on your will that you wish your national law (English law) to rule your inheritance. If you have not, then you need to speak to a solicitor about this new European directive and add this statement to your will. 2.If you are married and you have been concerned with possible claims by your spouses children against your estate this risk can be completely removed by your spouse stating on her/his will that it should be English law that rules the inheritance. Conclusion: The new regulation has given much more strength to the testators /testatrix, letting them choose between English or Spanish Law, which is good, but precaution is a must because under the new regulation if nothing is said and you are a resident in Spain automatically the law applicable will be Spanish law which does not permit that spouses leave everything to each other if there are children. To avoid nasty surprises visit your solicitor and ask if you need to change the wording of your will due to the new Regulation of the EU. 650/2012. Michael Davies. Abogado.

YOU HAVE BOUGHT A PROPERTY AND IT WAS AN ABSOLUTE BARGAIN…
As a good citizen, you paid your purchase taxes (8% of the price of the property) but now you have received a letter from the tax office telling you that you need to pay more taxes since their valuation of the property is higher than the price you paid. Why is that?
LEGALLY ACCEPTABLE MINIMUM VALUE FOR TAX PURPOSES If you and the seller declare an amount considered too little, then the Spanish Tax Agency can bill you, as buyer of the property, for the amount they deem underpaid. This problem is now occurring on normal legal transactions when you are lucky to get an absolute bargain. This is because a property is given a cadastral value for property tax purposes. During any given period, the tax office, rather than revalue all the properties, just declare a multiplier to this value to give the legally Multipliers acceptable minimum value for a property or piece of Albox 2,55 land. If you pay less than this total assumed value (after Antas 1,07 the multiplier is applied) you will get an invoice for the Arboleas 3,00 tax due on the amount between the price on the deeds and their figure. The Indian Experience last Friday raised €270 for charity and Pushpa becomes a local SMARTIE - she was Phenomenal and so were her very pleasant and very efficient staff. Eighty Indian Lovers filled The Spice Hut in Quesada last Friday and 43 tubes of Smarties were given out with the instructions: Eat the smarties - please fill the tube with 20 cent coins and return to The Spice Hut or Quesada Country Club. The SMARTies Project started by local estate agent Spanish Life Properties sl is to raise money for The Children’s Home in Elche and supporters of this charity were out in full force! Annette and Dave English volunteers for the charity and new supporter Estelle who was the Smarties Lady! The Indian Experience is a food demonstration, a short question and answer talk on spices followed this time by a vegetarian full running “eat as much as you like” buffet all for €7.90, the the chance to wear a sari and have a go at henna hand painting! Within one week of announcing the date it was a SELL OUT!! Pushpa still has a few places for Valentines night on the 14th of February and she has a Charity Fashion Show with a special offer of Chicken and Vegetable Balti with Rice at just €5.90 on Thursday March 20th and Pushpa is already planning a BIG BOLLYWOOD EVENT in May as soon as the weather is guaranteed. This time Pushpa will take up to 120 bookings and again there will be a raffle to raise funds for The Children’s Home in Elche. With some holiday makers already here
West Side Story Reaching Out to the Public
The Footlights Youth Theatre Group production of West Side Story , music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim is grabbing the imagination of the Torrevieja Theatre going public. This show which is the third production with collaboration between Footlights Theatre Group, Ayuntamiento Torrevieja and The Torrevieja Costa Lions Club. Lion President Janette Bennett is delighted that the Lions are promoting this event and is further delighted that funds raised from this excellent production will be donated to Reach Out which provides much needed support to the homeless and those most in need in Torrevieja. Theatre patrons will not only see a fine show but they will also be helping those less fortunate in our community. Lions will provide the opportunity for patrons to participate in the Prize Draw, with the winner being announced in the auditorium at the interval. There will also be a retiring collection at the end of the performance. If you want to have a great night out with friends and help the Lions Club to help others, get down to the box office in the Plaza to the front of Teatro Municipal and book your seats. With retirement savings dwindling, more and more of us are wondering if we’ll be able to retire as planned. Many baby boomers, especially, will have to keep working long past traditional retirement age just to make up for the beating their retirement plans have taken in recent years. Or maybe not... It’s quite possible that you can still retire as planned…and maybe even retire earlier than expected. How? By retiring overseas... A foreign retirement isn’t for everyone, of course. Family obligations may be an issue for some people. Others might not be comfortable in a place where they don’t speak the language. But if you’re the adventuresome type…or if you’ve dreamed of living in an exotic location–maybe on a sultry tropical beach, in a pristine mountain hideaway, or in a sophisticated, culturally rich city–with better weather and a lower cost of living, retirement overseas may be for you. If you dream of moving overseas, you probably look forward to a lowstress, affordable lifestyle. It’s likely to be a healthier lifestyle, too. Here are some reasons why....

Warm climate Most of us dream of retiring someplace warm. Snow and cold are things we gladly leave behind with our old 9-to-5 lives. And when the weather is warm and sunny, it’s easy to spend more time outside in the fresh air. Before you know it, you may ease into an active lifestyle with lots of exercise…which health experts agree is key to keeping us looking and feeling young.

Some expats actually choose an overseas destination because they
If you live in a city, you may soon be walking to shops and markets, or just exploring your new home town on foot. When adventure or fresh discoveries lie around every corner, long walks don’t feel like exercise.
Healthy eats
Social life
With a warm climate comes a long growing season for fruits and vegetables. Expats often praise the quality and freshness of the produce they can buy locally. You can choose to eat junk food if you want. But fresh, exotic produce can tempt you to eat more healthily. If you do, your health—not to mention your taste buds—will thank you.

Fresh air and sunshine can also help you make friends. (Health experts say that social networking helps us live longer, too.) Ever stayed home from a social event because you couldn’t face a cold, wet night out? In your new warm-weather home, you’re more likely to ask, “Where’s the party?” and enjoy the evening stroll there and back.
Of course, in warm weather it’s also tempting to lie by the pool and just do nothing. That’s okay, too—it lowers all that unhealthy stress.

An International Evening with Vivace Classical Choir
There is a busy time ahead for Vivace Classical Choir. They are at present rehearsing Handel’s “Messiah” for their main concerts at the beginning of April, to be performed in San Miguel de Salinas, La Siesta Church and the Iglesia del Colegio de Santo Domingo in Orihuela.. But before that, on Friday 28th March, they will be joined by a visiting choir from Denmark – The Lyngby Kammerchor (pictured). Vivace is already a truly international choir, with singers from many European countries, and the music chosen for this combined concert will reflect an international theme. Vivace members
Tomas and Tove Andgren, who live in Denmark for part of the year, have invited this chamber choir to join with Vivace for this special event. The concert will comprise items sung by each choir, and finish with a combined item, “The Hallelujah Chorus” from Handel’s Messiah, conducted by Vivace’s Musical Director Tom Pargeter. This concert will take place in the Casa de Cultura, San Miguel de Salinas, on Friday 28th March at 8.00. or more details call 96 572 0919. Entry to the concert is free.

Dog training: How to Be the Pack Leader A dog’s mother begins training puppies from birth. She makes them wait for food; she controls when they play and how far they travel. Adult dogs need these same rules, boundaries, and limitations from you, their pack leader when dog training. A pack leader doesn’t project emotional or nervous energy, so neither should you. In the wild, the pack leader uses calmassertive energy to influence how the dog interacts with his surroundings. She enforces these laws in a quiet way, as is the case when a mother picks up a puppy by the scruff of the neck if he strays outside the den. Ownership of territory is very important. Dogs in the wild claim space by first asserting themselves in a calm and confident way, and then communicating this ownership through clear body language signals and eye contact. A dog who understands that you, as the pack leader, own the space in which he lives will respect your asserted authority while dog training. Waiting is another way that pack leaders assert their position. Puppies wait to eat, and adult dogs wait until the pack leader wants them to travel. Waiting is a form of psychological work for the dog. Domestication means dogs don’t need to hunt for food, but they can still work for it. Establish your position as pack leader by asking your dog to work. Take him on a walk before you feed him. And just as you don’t give affection unless your dog is in a calm-submissive state, don’t give food until your dog acts calm and submissive. Exercise will help the dog, especially a high-energy one, to achieve this state. The true test of leadership is knowing your pack. I want to know

A Walk on the Bark Side Cruz Azul for Pets in San Javier is organising a ‘Walk on the Barkside’ at the Esplanada de Barnuevo, Santiago de la Ribera, on Sunday, 16 March. It promises to be a great opportunity to walk your pooch along the 3km route and meet other dog-lovers along the way, whilst helping to raise funds for the charity. Entry is just 5€ and your pooch will receive a dog tag when he/she completes the walk. Entry forms and sponsorship forms can be found at the Cruz Azul shop in San Javier, next door to Yorkshire Linen, or on the website’s “What’s On” page: www.uk.cruzazulmurcia.es Cruz Azul is run along similar lines to the PDSA in the UK and its mission is to provide veterinary care for the sick and injured pets of people in need and to promote responsible pet ownership. As a new association, Cruz Azul’s priorities will be to: Provide and maintain veterinary services
on a stable, sustainable and long-term basis. Expand these services, in line with a clear and controlled Business Plan as funds and circumstances permit. Encourage funding, by raising awareness and developing an understanding of their work. Deliver pet health initiatives. In addition to fundraising events, the Cruz Azul shop in San Javier is open daily and sells clothes, accessories, jewellery, furniture, household goods, bric-a-brac, etc. The shop is open Monday to Saturday, from 10.00 to 14.00 each day and now proudly displays some great graphic signage, which was donated to Cruz Azul by volunteer, Mr Bill Conway. Manager, Sue Thomason, will be delighted to see new customers and to receive donations for the shop. You can email her on shop@cruzazulmurcia.es or call her on 693 017 616. my pack and what fulfills them. This is what creates balance. Then formulating a dog training plan, setting an intention, and following through is what creates even more strength in your relationship, bond, and its depth. To me, that’s respect, both of the needs of your dog and yourself. This is what distinguishes the true pack leader from the rest. They are honest. They are real. They accept. They are in touch. They are present. They are respectful. They are balanced. And they know their pack. In all of these ways, the pack leader in nature sets rules, boundaries, and limitations for her pack, and in doing so, nurtures her dog’s healthy state of mind. Source: www.cesarsway.com

book review
The ship, bow first, was slowly sinking into the water. People began tumbling like broken dolls from the decks, flopping, flailing into the sea. There was a huge cracking sound-and then the Titanic disappeared. Kate Alcott, a pseudonym for Patricia O’Brien, used transcripts of the US Senate hearings over the sinking of the Titanic in April 1912. Some of the characters are based on real characters who either survived the sinking such as the Duff Gordons and Margaret Brown as well as Senate William Alden Smith who presided over the hearings, otherwise Alcott admits to this being a work of fiction with the inclusion of factual evidence. I would highly recommend this book. Gripping from start to finish and I mean that! Tess Collins is the kind of heroine I admire and strongly approve of. She comes from modest roots, a large family struggling to make ends meet. Her father is critical and a man of the time, denying equal rights to women. Tess is constantly haunted by his oppressive and deprecating tones: You’re a farm girl, do your job, keep your head down and don’t put on airs. He was under the impression that she would ruin her life through defiance. Thankfully, Tess is a stubborn lady and is determined to make her life better not wreck it. She proves to be a good role model just like her mother: look for opportunity. Keep your head up, not down. Don’t settle for safety. Push forward-you are not foolish to try. What a far cry from her father’s damning thoughts: Watch out, foolish
The Dressmaker by Kate Alcott. girl. Tess feels ashamed of working as a servant, an image of servitude when she is duped into accepting work in Cherbourg. She was a good seamstress and we see evidence of this when she starts working for the indomitable Lady Gordon Duff, a famous dress designer, the person she most admired in the world. Like many others, Tess is on the cusp of a new life filled with immense possibilities, a dream come true, a wonderful fantasy. Sailing on the Titanic with the famous and wealthy. Two infatuated men, one a rich American businessman, Jack Bremerton, the other a talented member of the crew, Jim Bonney who sweep her off her feet. Wonderful and then…the jolt, the slight bump followed by a sudden silence and the sadly ironical remark: We bumped into an iceberg but all is well. Bumping, scrambling, shouting. Suddenly there was an acrid, sweaty smell of human fear in the salt air. Children wailing. Panic everywhere. Desperation. Followed by the horrors that have been well-documented over the years. That this ruined people’s lives is an understatement and I mean for those who were lucky enough to survive. We are told that 706 survived out of a passenger list of 2,223 and that out of these 60% of the first-class passengers survived, most of them women. In steerage, it was 25%. In reality, the Duff Gordons and their secretary escaped in a lifeboat that could have held 40-50 people instead of
pause for thought
During this period between Christmas and Lent, the Church spends time considering a number of incidents in the early ministry of Jesus; such as his Baptism and the selection of his disciples. One such incident that always fascinates me, possibly in part because of my enjoyment of this commodity, is that very well known story of Jesus turning water into wine; a story that I’d guess is known by everyone who has had any exposure at all to the Christian faith. But I wonder whether any of us actually realise just how amazing this miracle was. The wedding reception, which should have been the highlight of the greatest day of a young couple’s life, was about to become a disaster, bringing them shame and huge embarrassment as they’d grossly underestimated the amount of wine their guests would consume. The scene hardly bears thinking about. The shock, the anger and recriminations would inevitably put an immense strain on that young marriage. But the day was quite literally saved by the response of Jesus to his mother’s request that he come to the rescue. And it is the manner in which Jesus acted that really is so amazing. First, he acted discretely; in such a way that even the Master of Ceremonies was unaware of the problem, and embarrassment was kept to a minimum. Secondly, Jesus used equipment, resources and people that were readily available, telling the servants to fill some large jars that were present in the room with water and then serve that to the guests. Thirdly, he didn’t just provide a few bottles of wine, but was incredibly generous; seven hundred or so litres –
25
that’s around a thousand bottles! And fourthly, it wasn’t just an ordinary vino de casa, but a very good, high quality wine that evoked consternation from the M.C. So why would anyone suggest that Christians can’t have fun, or enjoy themselves? The couple in this story would certainly assert that Jesus gave a whole new dimension to the concept of ‘fun’ in their marriage, as he can in all our lives. 12. In The Dressmaker Alcott explores how the couple were vilified by the press and people in both the USA and the UK. Lady Duff Gordon is subpoenaed to give a statement of what happened in Lifeboat One, contradicting Jim Bonney’s statement. There were crimes against humanity, moral crimes, tales of bribery and refusals to fill the boat and look for survivors. Marrying into the titled class. Gave her licence to be cold about people’s lives. And this is when Tess has to grow up, think for herself and decide on what she really wants out of life. Should she stand up, challenge and do what she wants to do OR should she be careful, be loyal and challenge nothing? Can she remain with her ideal, continue to admire and respect her after learning how self-absorbed, selfish and a bit careless the woman is? People choose whatever they want to believe and declare it true. What is the truth? Will anyone accept any liability for so many loss of lives? Our poor heroine is filled with so much uncertainty. How could she be sure of anything anymore? She has crucial decisions to make over her future with Lady Duff Gordon and her love life. Interestingly, her mother’s advice and her own common sense are pivotal in her decision making. She certainly is true to herself and full of hope not despair. She would be strong and not always too careful, not settle for a smaller life,
a n d face what was true. As she walked through the streets of New York she felt strangely serene she was just a servant girl from Cherbourg without a job but she had a life and a future. That was important. Jack Bremerton called her extraordinary as a character and I would endorse this. She is the kind of person one would feel immense pride and joy to be with and I finalise by repeating what a role model she would make for women around the world today. I rest my case. There are several views on the history of Valentine’s Day. One is the story of Valentine, a physician also said to be a gastronomist, who made his medicines more palatable by mixing them with herbs, spices, honey, and wine. The doctor was converted to a Christian priest and began treating the blind daughter of one of Emperor Claudius II’s prison guards in an attempt to restore her sight. Valentine was incarcerated for his religious beliefs, and after his refusal to renounce Christianity, was executed by Claudius II on February 14 in the third century. Legend has it that he had fallen in love with his patient and sent a note to the girl, signed “from your Valentine,” before his execution. Supposedly the girl’s vision was posthumously-restored by his treatment and faith at the very time she was reading his last words. Valentine was canonized by Pope Gelasius in 496, and his feast day was celebrated until its removal in 1969 from liturgical calendars. Other historians believe the holiday derives from the Roman festival of Lupercalia, which was celebrated on February 15. This was a fertility celebration of the Roman god Faunus, the god of flocks and fertility, to ensure fertility and easy births by the women of the community. One custom was for young maidens to write love letters, which would be drawn by unmarried men who subsequently courted the ladies. Another icon associated with Valentine’s Day is the ever-present Cupid (aka: Eros and Amor), the little cherub who was the son of Aphrodite, the goddess of beauty. The young, playful god was known as the god of love, and is most often depicted in art flying around with a bow and arrow, shooting love into the hearts of the unsuspecting. Of course, Cupid and the heart became the symbols of love and Valentine’s Day. Most likely, all these stories merged together over the centuries to become the holiday we celebrate today. Food plays a major part in the celebration of this holiday. Chocolates are a traditional favorite but other DRESS TO IMPRESS foods are also love BOOKING ESSENTIAL triggers. The Illustrious Career of Anselmo Adamso
John MacDonald (El Sordo) - www.caratacus.eu
After an easy walk west from Alqueria’s Castle square one arrives at the home of Anselmo Adamso in the Calle Mirador. A house in the old style with living quarters above and a stable below. The stable has long been converted into a photographic studio where Adamso practises his art and regales his clients with stories of his glory days as a photojournalist. Jostling for space on the studio walls is a collection of framed photographs. These depict explosions, burning military vehicles and men running, crouched as invisible projectiles fly menacingly overhead. By contrast a series of portraits showing young ladies with unlikely blemish free skin and even more unlikely hairdos stand on side tables. These serve to demonstrate his present area of photographic interest. A close study of Adamso’s career and his photographs of conflict show that the first is fake and the second plagiarised from more courageous individuals. He has lived the lie for so long that he is now unable to distinguish reality from the veil of fantasy he has wrapped around himself. He now sees himself as some latter day Robert Capa who risked life and limb in order to portray the truth in support of a noble cause. He did however visit a theatre of war, by accident. It was during a holiday to central Africa. Leaving the hotel to go on a day trip to the Uppyourz Game Park he got on the wrong bus. A bus full of mercenaries. He thought their Armalites and AK47s were protection from the
more vicious residents of the game reserves. When he realised his mistake he had a bowel movement and broke the four minute mile getting back to the hotel. His mind has become so befuddled he sometimes forgets just why his clients are there. Recently he greeted the Village matriarch who wanted a photograph to remember her eightieth birthday with the words “Just pop your clothes on the chair and lay on the rug”. The lady being equally befuddled obliged and Adamso got some rather disturbing shots, in fact he is still having nightmares. Last year he found himself in the middle of one of the many Alquerian riots. He thought his chance had come for a real action shot. Unfortunately the result was a blurred confusion of figures. Although his camera had been on F5.6 Adamso had been on Remitroot Whisky. Anselmo Adamso was never a great photojournalist he spent most of his time photographing lampposts. He however is humoured by the dysfunctional folk of Alqueria. Adamso is simply an untalented amiable buffoon and fits snugly into the Alquerian order of things.

viewpoint
YOU ARE THE GOOD GUYS BUT . . If ever a more obvious love hate relationship existed, then it is the one that you find between the Americans and the rest of the world. Where to start… Well, let’s take American movies, or at least the ones where bare chested, pumped up supermen with muscles in their spit, save the world with one arm tied behind their backs and both feet in concrete. Whether it’s WW2, Vietnam or Eye-raq – guess who saved us all from the Nazi beasts and the Eastern hordes? A favourite film of mine is Independence Day. Watching it again the other night, it was the bit where the President makes his stirring Independence Day speech that epitomised it all yet again. The audience whoop and holler, slap each other on the backs with blows that would bring down a moose, and snap off salutes that resemble kung fu chops. No quiet determination to defeat the alien invaders for them. Another movie that I can watch repeatedly is Saving Private Ryan, but of course it tells us yet again how the courageous American military defeated the hated Hun single-handed. Only once as I recall, are the other allies mentioned, and then only in passing. You could list movie after movie with the same testosterone fuelled triumphal message of: “We Americans are the good guys and no one
By Colin Bird :
badbirdnow@gmail.com
else matters”. I have many American friends, some of whom were members of the USAF stationed at Lakenheath in Suffolk near to our previous home. I have even more English pals who have made their homes in various parts of the States – and they all love their lives there. But there seems to be utter bewilderment that the populations of large chunks of planet Earth simply hate the Yanks. How could anybody fail to adore the generous benefactors of the most powerful nation in the world? And let’s be clear, they are indeed generous and big hearted people – no doubts there whatsoever. They are always on the spot to give aid and assistance to those who require it the most, wherever it might be in the world, but shouting it from the rooftops and this tiresome chest beating is what gets up everyone’s nose. I had a discussion on Facebook with an acquaintance after the Haiti earthquake disaster, and I just had to make a comment when all that I read seemed to be the same self congratulatory chatter about how the Americans – and only the Americans – were going to the aid of the unfortunate Haitians. I mentioned that in fact there was a large European and British force of volunteers and aid agencies present, not to mention those of other countries from around the world. Well you would have thought that I had peed on the American flag and called the Governor of California an Austrian, because what I got back was everything from pure vitriol to a mocking condescension in recognition of our own ‘tiny’ efforts. My contact
talked down to me as if I was some wayward child that needed an education, by starting with:“Yes we know you help but . . .” It’s hard to blame the American people actually, because all that the American media, particularly the TV news media, ever report on at length, are those items where the US is directly involved or where American interests are represented. Last year there was a massive earthquake in central Italy – a country that might as well be in the constellation Andromeda as far as most Americans are concerned - where over 300 people died. On the American news programme I was tuned into, it merited just 25 seconds of their time before moving on to the much more important issue of the US trade figures. I know, because I timed it. America would be the perfect country if it could find some sense of humility; stop believing it’s own publicity and begin to acquire an appreciation of other nations that hellooooooo - happen to co-exist with them on this small planet. A journalist once wrote, “Americans have no reason to hate or fear foreigners, but they have given the rest of us a million reasons to hate and fear them”. Strong words, but there is an element of truth in that. It’s hard to live with them sometimes, but it’s sure as hell impossible to live without them. Oh, and it might help if you they sent Arnold Schwarzenegger back to Austria.

SMGS at VILLAMARTIN
ALFIE’S GOLF SOCIETY
Thursday, 30 January 2014 – Villamartin 32 members and guests representing Alfies GS met at Villamartin on the last Thursday of January for the first meeting of the year. No rain forecast, but blustery conditions promised to make scoring difficult, as proved to be the case. Additionally 18 very quick greens (in their usual excellent condition) added to players’ woes with their putting ! Captain, Mike Morris, presenting trophy to winner, Sam Cobley Sam Cobley (hcap 14.2) mastered the conditions better than the rest of the field finishing top of the pile with 35 stableford points. Congratulations to Sam on a well deserved first win since joining our society last year. Mike Smith (hcap 23.6) was 2nd with 32 points. Nearest the Pins on holes 9 & 13 went to Tony Hall and Adrian Russell respectively. Steve Mold saved his best tee shot of the day to win the Longest Drive prize on hole 16. Congratulations to all the winners on the day. The usual thanks to Anita at Alfies Bar for the post match hospitality and buffet,
LO CRISPIN GOLF SOCIETY Las Colinas - 05.02.14
This was our second game of the year and what better place to go than Las Colinas, although I must say you either love it or hate it. There must have been more lovers than haters as we were 39 strong on the day. This has been our first visit for some time and we were very pleased to find that they had relaxed the ‘no buggies on the fairway’ rule so we were well pleased. The format was our usual stableford with five new members playing for their handicap and even though conditions were good only a very few reached a good target of 30pts. Some members took advantage of trying out one of the road buggies, these had number plates, indicators, hand break, brake lights, windscreen wipers and a few more extras, whether these items help with the game in hand is another matter and so to the winners: Gold Division: 1st John Dunnion 30pts,
our committee for all their work in the background, and to Mike Probert from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services for arranging our day out. Our next monthly meeting is at Las Colinas on Thursday, 27 February - tee off 10am, and at the time of writing 34 out of the 36 places are spoken for. Please contact myself at the bar or Sandie at alfiesgolfsociety@gmail.com should you want to play. Mike Morris Captain, Alfie’s GS 3 February 2014
2nd Dicky Claeys 28pts and 3rd Brian Leys 27pts Silver Division: 1st Norman Potter 31pts, 2nd Stan Earl 30pts and 3rd Sue Smith 29pts Bronze Division: 1st Dave Keating 26pts (c/b), 2nd Chris Nield 26pts and 3rd Steve Harrison 25pts There were five members playing for their handicap so it was decided to give a special prize for the winner of those 5, this was Ian Blincoe with 27pts. NTPs: Brian Smith hole 5, Gail Coultate hole 7, John Dunnion hole 10 and Malcolm Morrison hole 14. There were 4 twos, John Dunnion, Paul Carter and Malcolm Morrison had 2. The free game draw won by Peter Morris. Lo Crispin Golf Society http://sites.google.com/site/locrispingolf/
DAYA NUEVA 1 v. BENFERRI 3 ALICANTE CADETES 2A A MUCH IMPROVED DAYA GO DOWN BATTLING Following last week’s poor performance Daya had a tough nut to crack in Benferri, today’s visitors to La Puebla. So it was pleasantly surprising to see Daya start very very brightly and almost take the lead through Angel on 3 minutes. The home side continued to push forward playing some very good football. The visitors did look very dangerous on the counter attack and on 15 minutes should have opened the scoring when a flying header from a corner just missed the mark. Then Daya had a good chance from a Luis free kick, but his fierce shot was well saved by the Benferri keeper. The visitors were now pushing the home side back and a goal for them looked imminent. It came
on 30 minutes from a corner which Daya failed to deal with. The ball ricocheted about the area before being stabbed home to give the visitors the lead. On 36 minutes Danni was caught out at his near post and could only help a ferocious shot into his own net to make it 2 - 0. No more goals before half time and at 2 0 down Daya were now up against it. The second half saw Benferri set off at a gallop and Danni in goal made three very smart saves to keep the floodgates from opening. To be fair Daya kept their heads up and in Luis they had a player who could possibly nick a goal from their rare counter attacks. The Daya goal came on 55 minutes but not from Luis. It came via a block buster of a free kick from distance by Jota. Barely 3 minutes later a superb turn and shot from a Benferri forward
restored their two goal cushion. Still Danni was making great saves along with the Daya defence to keep the scoreline at 3 - 1. it was never ending attacking from the visitors and surely they would add to their tally. Somehow they didn’t, in fact Daya had a couple of half chances of their own. So a very good Benferri side took the 3 points with a 3 - 1 win. It was a good sporting competitive game that was well controlled by the Match Official. The large crowd was treated to an entertaining game created by both sets of players. I think that this very good Benferri side will be the champions come the end of the season. No one Man of the Match for Daya this week, as they all raised their game from last week’s very poor performance. Daya Dave Team Sponsor: Segurlab
Ten groups did Stableford battle at Villamartin for our first game in February. The course was in good nick with plenty of run on the ball, tight lies and slick greens. More likely to be conditions favoured by the lower handicappers but, having said that, I certainly heard no complaints. A last minute injury to Josie Potts meant a forced concession from “Girls Aloud” in their doubles match-play. This meant a bit of re-jigging of the later fourballs so as a total of three singles match-play games could be held in conjunction with the day’s competition. These resulted in Brian Staines beating Ian Parkinson 3 & 1, Ken Flaherty just getting the better of Steve Fleet winning 1 up and Ben Price eliminating John Drakesmith 3 & 1. It’s always difficult to try and predict matchplay results…..a good number of the society’s better players are already knocked out. NTP’s went to Alan McDonald (Hole 6), Phil Birtwistle (Hole 9), Tony Smale (Hole 13) and Geoff Phillips (Hole 17). Stuart Grayson produced a commendable 33 points to claim the guest prize. In the bronze category all of the top 4 scored 31 points. After a complicated count-back 4th place went to Capt Steve Davis, 3rd to Ellen Drakesmith, 2nd to Norman McBride and top spot to Ian Parkinson. Silver division was a little easier to sort out – 4th place to John Drakesmith (31), 2nd to John Aitchison (32), 3rd to Phil de Lacy (33) and 1st to Ken Potts (34). Four regular winners once again collected the spoils in the gold division – 4th was Steve Fleet (32), 3rd was Tony Smale (33), 2nd was Ben Price and shooting top score of the day was
John Osborne who took 1st spot with 36 points. Well done to all the prize-winners and a “special” congrats to Stevie Fleet and his match-play team who successfully maintained a solid lead in their league position by beating “Claptons G.S.” at Bonalba on 3rd Feb. Only one match remains in this season’s Quesada League in which we could well scoop top prize next month in our first year of entering. Well done to all who have competed. It was good to see Barry back with us looking fit and well after his mammoth 3 month holiday “down under”. I can’t see the English cricket team adopting him full time as their lucky mascot; in fact they’ll probably do their level best to keep any details of their next match well away from the Roehrig household in case he turns up again! Seriously though it’s good to have him back and a special vote of thanks should go to those who have helped out beyond the call of duty while Baz was away. Alenda, Las Colinas and La Finca are the rest of this month’s games with full details available on the website www. smgs.org. Log on to get all society info or give Baz a buzz on 966 731 033 …… but please don’t mention the Ashes! Photo: Some of this week’s happy winners. George Chapman, make sure thee packs thy shoes! No doubt about it, the wind that was blowing harder than hell was tricky for many golfers but there was 6 scores in the 30’s, so some did appear to be able to combat the gale. All 4 NTP’s were claimed and the following received a sleeve of Srixson Soft Feels for their efforts Steve Higgins (Driver on the 3rd), Nick “Norman” Spicer, Sandra Twentyman and Shelia Dean.
TMGS Match Report 2014.
for Roda 5th February
By heck, on this day in history and how dare they? In 1782 - The Spanish captured Minorca from the British. Plus, this time today in history, back in 1924 - The BBC time signals, or “pips”, from Greenwich Observatory were heard for the first time. They are broadcast every hour. Apart from that, only one achieved his handicap in the wind that could only be produced by 5 rugby teams eating a Vindaloo after 8 pints of Guinness. Yes, the wind was that strong and when you consider that a NTP for the Gold Division was won by a member using a DRIVER to reach the Par 3! Also, on this day in history, one member had a very senior moment and needed to spend a few bob on a new pair of shoes, and being a Jock, that didn’t go down well. Next time
The Best Guest of the day was Mickie “It’s not Bath, it’s Barth” Noble with 28 points. In the Silver Division, it only needed 28 points for the Senior of the Chuckle Brothers, Colin Marsden to take 3rd place. Ernie Wilson claimed the runners-up slot with 32 points, just one point behind George “Like my new shoes?” Chapman on 33 points. The Gold lads fared slightly better and Alan Rixson needed 30 points to take 3rd slot. Norbert Spaniol took the runners-up slot with 31 points and the winner and the top score of the day went to the only member to achieve handicap was Steve Higgins 0n 36 points. Tuesday Night Trios Ten Pin Bowling League Week Eighteen played 4th February 2014
With round one of the Cornish Pride Cup knock out throwing up some good results, it was back to league points this week. After their battle in the KO cup last week, Juans Warriors took on Crazy Pinz again but, could only manage to take 2 points off the improving CPs, who ran out winners again. Most notable score for Cps was a 214 handicap game by Gunter Wilms. There was a lot of noise down on lanes 9 and 10, where Bar Mosquitos took all three games against Los Bandidos, by less than 10 pins each game, to run out 8 – 0 winners. Splash had
been on a good run, over the last few weeks but, came up against Team Finland who were in no mode to lose any points. Olli Leppanen led from the front with two 200+ games, resulting in a 636 scratch series. Diego Munoz responded for Splash, with a 591 h/c series but it wasn’t enough to prevent TF taking all 8 points. The Mixers were another team taking on their cup opponents again and, with Inga Soderstrom taking all the Ladies weekly high scores, with a 192 scratch game and 603 handicap series, ran out winners against Cornish Pride 8 – 0. Clash of the night saw the top two teams battle it out

do not generally tell the true battle.
Here we are at the penultimate match at Bonalba Golf. This was the match when the minnows met the giants, would they be able to upset the top Society. This time we had a four tee start so on a sunny but cold morning battle began. Everybody had battled hard but the outcome was true to form with the minnows losing out once again, but the scores
Nevertheless it leaves the League top contenders to fight for the overall title in the final match. Will it be San Miguel, will it be Benijofar the winners for the last two years, or will it be Mini Golf. Everything is nicely set for the campaign to end the season when San Miguel will play Benijofar and Lunes play Mini Golf, this can only make a thrilling end to a really special year

again. After their cup win last week, Split Happens took the first game against Hall y Day by 74 pins. But HyD responded and took the next two games and the series, to come out 6 – 2 winners. With Kjell Monsen of SH bowling a 603 scratch series, he took over as the highest average bowler.
taking the first game by 32 pins. But CN came roaring back with two 600+ handicap games to take the match 6 – 2. Seppo Tuominen with a 651 h/c series and, Paku Hakonens 612 h/c series, helped CN take the Team h/c series on the night, with 1825.
After some lean weeks taking few points, Lucky Strike bounced back with a 8 – 0 win over Los Lobos. Graham Lewis, with a 213 scratch game and a 604 handicap series, was the pick of LS, with Paul Kundiss assisting with a 188 scratch game. Eurogolf La Marquesa Press Report. 42 players were entered the February Monthly Medal on Thursday 6 February 2014 at our home course of La Marquesa. The weather conditions could not have been more perfect, no wind and what would be a glorious summer’s day in the UK. Aren’t we lucky living our here and not having to contend with the current weather conditions back home? I am led to believe that our Mr Stanley was the superhero of the day, coming to his wife’s rescue when her battery went on her trolley. I believe he was seen driving over the fairway with his red underpants over his trousers and a cape flowing in the
breeze; (only joking), but he did save the day for Chris who was then able to finish her round. The Buckeridge and Manning families must be taking vitamin pills as both husbands and wives were in the prizes today. Well done to all our winners.
