THE WAREHOUSE OF DESPAIR
An abandoned warehouse in Alicante has been christened ‘the warehouse of despair’ after dozens of homeless people took up residence. It is located right in the heart of the city of Alicante, next to the busy Gran Via and close to the homeless Centre Centro Nazaret. However, the Centre’s resources are not infinite, and more and more people have to live on the street, or crawl through a small hole into this grim grey warehouse, living without heating, light or any amenities, taking abandoned furniture and clothing from skips and rubbish dumps. Inside the warehouse the stench is almost unbearable. In the dim light you can see that it is a two storey building where humans live among a hodgepodge of garbage and junk and are making a vain effort to turn the space into a ‘home’. Between piles of clothes, broken appliances and cables, pictures have been carefully hung on the walls; there is even a decorated Christmas tree! Despite the appalling conditions, there is some order to the chaos. The occupants have their own small ‘rooms’, and there is a common ‘salon’ for socialising, or playing board games like backgammmon. Although there seems to be some organisation, no-one claims to be ‘in charge’. Although the Ayuntamiento is aware that there are about 20 people living in this warehouse, the Concejalía de Acción Social says that addressing this matter ‘is not an intervention that can be made from this department.’ Staff of the Centro de Acogida e Inserción para Personas sin Hogar (CAI) Nazaret said that most of the people who are using the warehouse have been users of the different services of CAI and ‘do not wish to join any of integration programs (long stay) available at the Centre.’ However, the CAI external services (showers, laundry, baggage), are available to non-residents. In fact, staff of the CAI are not permitted to enter the warehouse to assess the needs of the occupants because the warehouse is private property, and they would be guilty of trespass. However, the occupants themselves have confirmed that volunteers sometimes bring them food. None of these solutions is the final answer, and when the Servicios Sociales have accessed the building they have been accompanied by the Policías Locales, who have written reports on the situation and its potential dangers to health from the living conditions, deterioration of the structure of the building and the fire hazard. Statistics: In 2012 1,333 homeless people were assisted in the Centro de Atención e Inserción Nazaret, which has an 88.25% occupancy, 8% more than in 2010, and 16% more than in 2010. 54% of those attending the Centre are Spanish, and 20% had addictions or mental llness. 89% of the total number of users are male.
Villajoyosa Research by the University of Alicante and Vilamuseu on agricultural ground has unearthed terraces from the IV-III centuries BC. It is thought that the terraces of Villajoyosa are the oldest known on the Mediterranean coast of the Iberian Peninsula. The Concejal de Patrimonio Histórico, Pepe Lloret, explained that ‘these finds are so scarce in the archaeological landscape due to the difficulty of detecting such simple structures. It is just a masonry wall with a filling of limestone behind it, but it is the archaeological material associated with the terrace wall which gives the date of its construction, while the dating of its abandonment is provided the covering layers after they fall into disuse.’ He added. ‘The homogeneity of the remains in all cases of Vila leaves no doubt about the reliability of the proposed dates.’

Sport Not one, but two of Torrevieja’s greatest choral groups, take to the stage for a “One off” concert, in this splendid theatre, on Sunday May 19th.. Local Spanish choir Masa Coral Jose’ Hodar, first got together way back in 1955. The founding musical director was Don. Jose’ Hodar, gathered together local choristers to take part in the first ever Habaneras competition, which these days is the Certamen Internacional de Habaneras y Polifonia, one of the worlds most prestigious choral competitions. Their repertoire is typical torrevejense Habaneras songs. The choristers have performed on stage throughout Spain, and have been seen on Canal 9 and RTVE television channels, and more locally on both Television Torrevieja and Television Vega
Baja. Crescendo International Choir is a local, well established mixed choir, made up of some 50 choristers. Members got together in 2004, as the result of an idea of chorister Mary Priddle. The founding M.D., was Chas Smith, who also directed the Torrevieja Barbershop Harmonisers. British, Dutch, German and other nationalities make up the membership. Crescendo repertoire includes songs from the shows, the world of film and musicals, through to Gospel songs. The choir will be accompanied on the pianoforte by Jose’ Alberto Morales. Admission to this concert is 5 euro. Funds from this “Two for the price of one” offer, will be donated to “Cruz Roja” A joyous evening beckons

A special feature will be a song, to show how deaf people can “Hear” or communicate by the virtue of sign language. During this special song, the children will use deaf sign language, signing the words they are singing. This will be the first ever performance of this “Special” song in Spain, and Nigel tells me it is both lovely to watch, and a very emotional experience. Tickets for this concert, with proceeds going to La Zenia Church, are just 5 euro each. They can be purchased from the CallNet Internet cafe, (Behind Consum Supermarket, next to Paddy’s Point, La Zenia), from choir members and on the door, should there be any left! A Musical Journey to Far Lands and Unknown Worlds
This years Spring Concert by the Cantabile Singers, will be held at the Palacio de la Mu’sica, Torrevieja, on Sunday, May 18th., starting at 7.30 PM. Admission is free, although voluntary donations to “Age Concern”, on the night, would be gratefully received. The choir, led by musical director Jennifer Morton, will, by means of some 16 songs, take Sunday’s passengers to the Americas, the Far East, New Zealand, the South Pacific and Africa, and that’s just in the first half! In the second half, Jennifer tells me the emphasis is given to the journey itself: by ship, across oceans and along rivers. The last voyage is into outer space, before re-entering the earths atmosphere, and landing with great rejoicing. From the Age Concern office in La Siesta, Torrevieja Town Hall, is generously providing a coach, to enable audience members to reach their embarkation point, at the Palacio de la Mu’sica, in Torrevieja. “The Americas” will include “Battle Hymn of the Republic” and “Georgia on My Mind”. “The Orient”, “On the Road to Mandalay” and “Love is a Many-Splendoured Thing”. “The Pacific, New Zealand and Africa” will bring a touch of the Rodgers & Hammerstein, with “Some
Enchanted Evening”. I remember when working the “Follow Spot” on this production, in the U.K., the cast always referred to this R & H production as “Sam and Janet Evening” . (Sorry, I digress). “By River and Sea” there will be “The Sea”, along with Vivaldi’s “River of Dreams” “To the Moon, and Outer Space”, there will be “Moonlight Sonata”, and of course, “Star Trek (Life Captain, but not as we know it) First Contact theme”. Once, safely through the Asteroid Belt, “Great Rejoicing” will conclude this journey to far lands and unknown worlds with “Pilgrims Chorus, Hava Nagila and Dvorak’s, Going Home” Tickets for this “No passports Required” musical journey, can be obtained from the Age Concern office, from any members of Cantabile that you happen to know, or at the door on the night. EU opposes new regional law to save repossessed homeowners from a life of homelessness
Andalucía’s regional government says it has no intention of withdrawing a new law allowing it to expropriate properties from banks to prevent defaulting owners from being thrown out on the street, despite Brussels announcing it may not be legal.
Regional minister for the economy Antonio Ávila says the new law is ‘perfectly sound’ and has the full support of the public, but that the EU claims it might not be ‘compatible’ with the conditions imposed on Spain when it was granted bail-out funds for its banks. And, according to press reports, regional president of Andalucía José Antonio Griñán says he ‘does not understand this lack of sensitivity’ and that if Brussels wants to go down this route, then ‘the EU is not worth it’: “I am pro-Europe and cannot believe they would bow down to the financial markets to this extent,” Griñán
states. He says he also believes Brussels has rejected the proposal by the PSOE to create a ‘cash flow’ fund for small and medium-sized businesses.
“If both these situations are as such, then I will be very worried because they cannot tell the people of Spain that they have to spend their own money to pay back the debts of the banks, and yet apply terms and conditions to the people of Spain rather than to the banks. “I do not understand it – the law simply allows us to pay the mortgage lender a fair price for properties that would otherwise be in disuse, so that they are then owned by the regional government and the owners can rent them from us and continue to live in them rather than having to sleep on the street because their home has been repossessed. “If we cannot do this because of conditions imposed on Spain as a result of the bail-out funds for the banks, then two things need to happen: Firstly, for Rajoy to tell us once and for all if there were any conditions to these funds being granted or not – since he has always maintained there were none – and secondly, to reconsider whether all this is worth it. “There is no logic in the fact that nobody bats an eyelid when a bank that has been bailed out subsequently pays 88 million euros in retirement pension to one of its top managers, and yet a socially-conscious law such as this one can be declared invalid.” Brussels has apparently written directly to the central government rather than to the regional Parliament of Andalucía, which says it has not been officially notified of
the EU’s possible objection to its expropriation scheme. The new law means that where homeowners in Andalucía face repossession and would be left homeless as a result, the regional government will compulsorily purchase the property from the mortgage lender, and then allow the original, defaulting owner to live there for a heavily-reduced rent, in order to prevent them from losing their homes. Apah & Iceland Sponsored Charity 2013
APAH, Animal Rescue Charity has been very lucky to be selected as Iceland’s (San Javier store) sponsored charity for 2013. The first major event they are holding on behalf of APAH is a Fun Day at the store on Saturday 25th May. The poster cannot do justice to the amazing collection of local business that Iceland have enlisted to help make this event a huge success. The raffle prizes for example, that Iceland have been able to acquire from local businesses in support of the event, total an incredible 650 Euros! The list includes vouchers for meals, beauty treatments, a sailing lesson, a personal training session, hand-made jewellery and a custom made cake, sunglasses of your choice from a well known retailer, and much more. Along with the companies donating prizes, there are also companies who have agreed to go along on the day and get involved in the event. There will be a bouncy castle, a
Hog Roast, a dancing exhibition, a zumba exhibition, nail art sessions, classic cars/limousines and craft stalls including hand made jewellery and gifts hand crafted from pewter. The event will all be tied together by Iceland’s own instore Radio Station. The list is very impressive, and APAH is grateful both to Iceland and all the companies who are involved in both donating prizes and companies going along on the day of the event. The event starts at 11.00 am until approximately 4.00pm, with the raffle to be drawn around 3.00pm. Tickets will be on sale in the Iceland store and in APAH’s Charity Shops in Pilar de la Horadada and San Miguel de Salinas, which are open from Monday to Saturday every week. Everyone is welcome to go along on Saturday 25th May, have a great day, support a very worthwhile cause, and maybe go home with a fantastic prize.

Let The People Sing! The Torrevieja University of the Third Age (U3A) Community Choir was founded on 8 April this year. A community choir is for all the folks who would love to sing in a choir, but who hesitate at the thought of having an audition. Community Choirs do not ask their members to audition: the belief is that everyone can sing. Plus there is no requirement to read sheet music. Judith Phillips, our Musical Director, places great emphasis on fun and enjoyment; the choir sings popular songs, all the old favourites, new songs, show songs - you name it - we’ll give it a go. The choir is a friendly and funloving community of people with heart, who are always willing to help those who feel a little lost. There is no pressure on the choir to perform before an audience. Whether or not we perform will be decided democratically by the choir members. If we do decide to perform in public, our performances will be for the benefit
of the wider community. Principal members of the choir are: Maureen How: Group Leader Judith Phillips: Musical Director Wendy Cox: Accompanist The Choir meets every Monday afternoon at 2.00pm in San Luis, Torrevieja and is already very popular - but new members are always welcome. If you are interested in joining the Torrevieja U3A Community Choir, please have a look at our website www.casatom.com or email Maureen on casatomsanluis@gmail.com for more information. Newcomers may download the U3A membership forms from http://www. torreviejau3a.org/joining.htm and bring the completed form along to their first choir practice. The Choir is open to both men and women. Come and join us, we look forward to meeting you!
PUB CRAWL IN AID OF THE AECC
Over 60 people turned up at the Forest bar Pueblo Bravo for the inaugural Pub Crawl to raise funds for the AECC. We made our way up to Quesada via the various watering holes collecting donations in our buckets. The George pub held a raffle to boost funds plus Angie Nicholls and her girls performed a Zumba display and were joined by some of the walkers including Maria of Marias pink ladies. We ventured down to Claptons and then onto Sunset La Vida bar who had raffled off a giant bottle of vodka for the charity. We then split up as some went to El Raso and collected over 200 euros from the bars there, and some went to the country club and down to the golf course bars who were equally as generous .Also El Toro bar handed over a collection of money. We all ended up back at the Forest bar for a great afternoonofentertainment where we were all singing, dancing and eating. There was a great atmosphere and the staff worked exceptionally hard to make it a successful day. Sue the landlady did the walk and then ploughed straight back to work as it was so busy. But all the hardwork was made worthwhile when we added up the buckets to find we had raised the tremendous amount of 2305 euros. Debbie Weedon and Maria Wilson AECC president would like to thank the bars and general public for their generosity. Future events are La Marina funday Saturday 18th May, Jollys fun day Saturday 1st June and Marias Pink walk, Sunday 2nd June at Playa Flamenca. Aloe Vera is one of Nature’s own best foods and we see it growing all around us particularly here in Spain. Now before you rush out to your garden and start chewing on the leaves – read on! There are over three hundred documented strains or species of the Aloe Vera plant, however there are only four main types with medicinal properties. One of these is considered to be the most potent and is known as Aloe Barbadensis Miller. Before looking at how wonderful this plant is and its therapeutic benefits, I think it’s important to first take a look at the history of the plant simply to clarify how essential it has been to mankind and indeed still is. Aloe Vera probably gets its name from the Arabic word ‘Alloeh’, which simply means ‘Shining bitter substance’. Some of you may be familiar with ‘bitter aloes’ a laxative drug, which is actually made from the sap of the Aloe Vera plant. A native
of Africa, the medicinal properties of the Aloe Vera plant have been well documented over the centuries in such cultures as the Ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans; as well as in Chinese and Indian history. It is also mentioned in the bible several times. Taken to London by traders in 1693, some two hundred years later it was used extensively in medicines. Indeed during the 18th and 19th centuries it remained one of the most popular prescribed and over-the-counter medicines. With today’s modern, organic farming methods one company leads the world in its production and distribution of Aloe Vera and related products, and continues to extol its therapeutic virtues and benefits around the world. Who is this company and what exactly are the benefits of this wonderful plant? As with most natural remedies Aloe works best when used fresh from the plant, however this is not as easy as it sounds because it is necessary to not only cut the leaf, (and providing you are cutting into the correct species!), but to fillet it to extract the gel like substance inside. It is far easier to purchase a preserved product, one that is as near to the natural plant as possible, therefore containing the correct balance of ingredients. In other words, one that has been interfered with as little as possible and has not been heat treated, filtered, concentrated or powdered. The only company I know that guarantees this (and the only company as a Therapist I would endorse), is Forever Living. The benefits of Aloe Vera are not only healing but also nutritional. Aloe can be used internally as a drink and as a topical remedy. The plant contains a whole host of ingredients (over 75 in all – too many to mention here!), such as the all important antioxidant vitamins, A, C and E; B Vitamins - B1, B2, B6, B12; Niacin and Folic Acid. As well as vitamins the plant provides minerals such as calcium, sodium, iron, potassium, chromium, magnesium, manganese, copper and zinc! It is a powerhouse of nutrients and taken daily as a drink is a natural and healthful way to replenish the body’s stores, as many vitamins and minerals cannot be stored by the body. Other ingredients include enzymes, sugars, anthraquinones or phenolic compounds, lignin, saponins, sterols, amino acids and salicylic acid. When taken orally Aloe Vera provides natural support for the immune system by providing natural immune enhancers to equip the body with an arsenal of goodness to draw upon 24 hours per day! How fantastic is that!! As a drink it is known and is widely reported as, ‘very soothing’, especially in the case of heartburn. Indeed it helps to keep the digestive tract healthy by ensuring that the nutrients from the food we eat are absorbed into the bloodstream. It contains natural, detoxifying abilities, and generally helps to improve bowel regularity while increasing protein absorption, whilst at the same time decreasing the unfriendly bacteria and yeast often associated with Candida. Diabetics are prone to constipation and sometimes diarrhoea, drinking Aloe Vera on a daily basis has shown to alleviate this problem. Furthermore studies have shown that when Type 2 diabetics take Aloe Vera internally, blood-sugars can be lowered by an average of 45%!! Brilliant!

Aloe Vera also has anaesthetic, antibacterial and, antifungal properties, which means that, when applied as a topical application it can relieve pain, itching and swelling when applied to minor wounds. Furthermore it increases blood flow to the damaged areas and encourages fibroblasts, (healing skin cells) to get to work. Eczema sufferers find it helps to soothe and calm inflamed sores and because it can add a rich supply of building materials to produce and maintain healthy skin it is also fantastic at sparing stretch marks during pregnancy and, with its unique nutritional building blocks, can help to combat the effects of ageing!! Furthermore, it is excellent at calming sunburn and is now used extensively in UK hospitals as an aid to burns victims. All in all, it is a particularly wondrous natural creation wouldn’t you agree? Sometimes the benefits of natural products can be forgotten in our hour of need because we have come to rely on largely prescriptive drugs from our doctors, with little knowledge as to how these products work and more importantly to the side affects that they have. How many of you can honestly say hand on heart you always read the leaflets inside medication packages? Whilst I am not advocating giving up on pharmaceutical drugs, I am as a therapist, advocating the use of natural products alongside prescribed drugs. Often this can help in cutting down on the use of prescribed drugs, after all today’s orthodox medicine has its roots in natural medicine. What will you be turning to in the future I wonder?

LOOK GOOD, FEEL GREAT
could HAPPINESS be the reason you’re piling on the pounds
Many people who overeat do so because they are happy, according to new research Until now, so-called ‘comfort eating’ was been linked with negative feelings such as depression, boredom, loneliness and anxiety. But experts believe that emotional eaters are actually more likely to gorge on unhealthy snacks when they feel happy rather than sad. New research shows that people whose eating habits reflect their moods actually take on more calories when they are cheery and upbeat than when they are down. The findings, by a team of Dutch psychologists, suggest

so called ‘happy eating’ has been largely overlooked as a risk factor in the global obesity epidemic. Latest government figures show 24 per cent of men and 26 per cent of women in the UK are now classed as obese - up from 13 per cent and 16 per cent respectively ten years ago. Emotional eating is recognised as one of the reasons why some people struggle to keep their weight under control. During times of stress, food can provide short-term comfort. Experts estimate that up to 75 per cent of overeating is caused by emotions and binging on unhealthy grub is often used as a prop when people feel unhappy. But researchers from Maastricht University in the Netherlands wanted to explore whether emotional eaters who binge when they feel down have no need for the same habit when they feel positive. They recruited 87 students

after each scene. The results, published online in the journal Appetite, showed that, contrary to expectations, those students classed as emotional eaters scoffed more after watching a positive clip than a negative one. In a report on their findings the researchers said: ‘Most emotional eating is related to negative moods. ‘However, volunteers did not overeat in response to negative emotions but did overeat in response to positive ones. ‘These findings could be of value for the treatment of obesity. They underline the importance of positive emotions on overeating, which are often overlooked.’ Rose Aghdami, a Berkshirebased psychologist who specialises in treating emotional eaters, said being happy can indeed increase calorie intake as much as being unhappy. But she said the difference is happy eaters tend to over-indulge during social functions and in the company of others, whereas unhappy eaters are more likely to shut themselves away in order to binge. ‘These people have an unhealthy relationship with food and are using it for all the wrong reasons,’ she said.

and assessed each one for their eating habits as well as their mental health, using well-established questionnaires designed to score each one. They then carried out a series of experiments where the students were shown clips from different films or TV shows in order to evoke a positive, neutral or negative mood. For example, to get them in a positive mood, researchers showed the students two scenes. One was from the TV comedy Mr Bean, starring Rowan Atkinson, in which he tries to copy answers from his neighbour during an exam. The other was the classic scene from the film comedy When Harry Met Sally, in which Meg Ryan simulates an orgasm in front of fellow restaurant diners. To get them in a neutral mood, the students were shown part of a documentary on fishing. And for the negative mood, they watched a movie clip from The Green Mile, starring Tom Hanks, in which an innocent man is executed in an electric chair. Immediately after viewing the clips, volunteers were provided with large glass bowls full of different flavoured crisps and white, milk or dark chocolates. Researchers measured their total calorie intake

Redheads: increased risk of skin cancer
even with minimum exposure to the sun
Redheads have a greater risk of developing skin cancer than people with dark or blonde hair even if they do not spend time in the sun, according to new research.
open 9-3pm Mon-Fri
‘Redheads should get more frequent body checks,’ Jeanine Downie, a spokeswoman for the Skin Cancer Foundation, told Medical Daily. ‘If they have no family history of skin cancer, they should still be checked at least twice a year, rather than the annual check we recommend for everyone else. If they have a family history of skin cancer, they should be checked every three months.’ The researchers wanted to compare the impact of pigment with that of sunlight on fair skin so they ‘turned off’ a receptor in mice that caused their hair to turn red. The mice with the ‘turned off’ receptor developed skin cancer without being subjected to UV light. This suggests that the pheomelanin pathway is what causes skin cancer in redheads.

Scientists have discovered that the production of red hair pigment causes an increased risk of melanoma. Until now it was believed that people with red hair were more prone to skin cancer simply because of their fair skin, however, the new research suggest that there is more to it. According to Medical Daily, scientists at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Cutaneous Biology Research Centre have two theories as to why red pigment causes a vulnerability to skin cancer. They say that cells make two different pigments – dark brown eumelanin and red/ orange pheomelanin. Their first theory is that the production of pheomelanin – as seen in people with red hair - is linked to oxidative stress and that this could cause cancer cells to develop. Alternatively, they say pheomelanin creation could use up skin cells’ antioxidant stores which would increase cancer risk. Either way, the researchers say that the

CLAYRE CUTS IT FOR MABS
Clayre Burgess opened her salon, Hairy Clayres in Los Belones, just over a year ago and has already established a large, loyal client base. The salon is always busy with both Spanish and English ladies and gentlemen. Clayre has always wanted to do voluntary work, but running a business means that she doesn’t have any spare time to devote to it. So, on occasions, she runs an event to raise awareness of a local charity and she decided to run a ‘Cut-a-Thon’ for MABS Cancer Support Group in Murcia. Clayre and assistant, Jessica Nelms, opened the salon on 6 May, a day when they are normally closed, and between them completed 25 haircuts, in return for a donation to MABS. The salon was buzzing and many people called in to support the event and have a cup of coffee and a cake. Local businesses also supported the event: delicious cakes and strawberries dipped in chocolate were made by Antonio, Clayre’s boyfriend and Head Chef at La Manga Owners’ Club, the refreshments were sponsored by H & H Properties, and local florist, Jerens, supplied beautiful, individual cream roses for each client who donated to MABS. MABS volunteer, Beverly Taylor, was on hand to help greet clients and offer refreshments. The whole day proved to be great fun and was a huge success, raising 450€ for MABS Murcia. “What a great day” commented Beverly. “Clayre and Jess have worked so hard today and we are so grateful to them and everyone who supported this event. All funds raised for MABS Murcia remain here to help people affected by cancer in the Murcia region.” Help and support provided by MABS Murcia includes: • Drivers for hospital appointments • Equipment for nursing in the home – hospital beds, ripple mattresses, etc. • Translators for doctor and hospital appointments • Therapy treatments • Telephone Support • One-to-one, professional counselling • Latest cancer information booklets • Share & Care Support Meetings MABS Murcia is a registered charity (No. 7261) offering help and support to local people of all nationalities who have been diagnosed with or are being treated for cancer. Along the stunning Costa del Sol about 50 kilometres east of Málaga, lies the town of Nerja. The area of this town now known as the ‘Balcony of Europe,’ was once a Moorish fortress prior to Spain’s war with the Moors.
After the town had been subject to an attack by British marines in 1810 and a devastating earthquake in 1884, King Alfonso XII visited this area, giving it the name as ‘Europe’s Balcony’, before he passed away. To commemorate his honour, the eastern side of the balcony hosts a life-sized bronze statue of the King looking out over the ocean. Neatly lined with palm trees, cafés, bars and restaurants, the entrance boulevard is a buzzing spot of street entertainers and liveliness till late hours of the night, particularly during summer time. Throughout the year, Balcón de Europa is also the main location for various fiestas, concerts, dance shows and other performances, as well as its spectacular New Years fireworks displays. With the balcony running along the edge of a rocky cliff, high above the Mediterranean sea, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the of beaches and coves surrounding the Andalusian town, which is enhanced by the visitor binoculars and benches provided around its surrounding railings. Balcón de Europa is also famous for its sunsets and sunrise, during which times both the boulevard and balcony itself get the most crowded. The town of Nerja stretches over 13 kilometres of beaches, which undoubtedly contributes to its thriving tourism. Attracting activities like scuba diving, canoeing, sailing and water skiing, together with its traditional beauty of old monuments and historical buildings such as its caves, its Castle dating back to 1509 and its Parochial Church; the popularity of the town amongst both visitors and locals continues to expand. Q. Is this the right time to purchase in Spain? A. This is not a legal query, but we frequently receive e-mails with precisely this question. Nobody has the magic ball to know for certain what will happen in the next year or two, but their is no doubt that their are extremely good opportunities and that it is presently a buyers market. Their are definitely many more transactions happening this year in Almería compared to last year . Those who where waiting to purchase have realised that they cannot wait fore ever and the sellers have reduced their price expectations in line with the market. The bank are also offering properties at greatly reduced prices, with generous finance if you purchase one of their properties. The market though is full of disparity regarding prices. In the same estate agent´s windows you will find properties with prices more appropriate for 2007 then 2013, and yet in the same window you will find a property priced by a motivated seller at a reduction of 50% on the 2007 prices. As long as you have the patience and are prepared to put some work into the property hunt I would say that is is an excellent time to purchase a property in Almeria Michael Davies is a Spanish Abogado and has been practicing law in Almería since 1993. He is member of the Law societies of Almería and Madrid and has offices in Mojacar and Almeria High Street.

SOLTIMES MAY 2013
SAVE MONEY ON SCHOOLBOOKS... Affordable schoolbooks. That is the aim of the project ‘Tus Libros Valen Dinero’, that is started for Secondary Schools (Institutos) in the Veja Baja. A project to realize a regional exchange of used schoolbooks. Schoolbooks are not luxury items, but simply needed to provide our children a good future. Bearing in mind the current economic situation including the lack of the subsidy the annual purchase of new schoolbooks for an average amount of €350 is for more and more households exorbitant attack on the budget. This cannot continue. ‘Tus Libros Valen Dinero’ has done an investigation into the use of schoolbooks in the Veja Baja and how the exchange of textbooks between
students of the Secondary schools can be aranged. The investigation has shown that schools in this region frequently use the same schoolbooks. ‘Tus Libros Valen Dinero’ informed most Secondary schools and/ or Parents Councils in the area Torrevieja, Guardamar del Segura, Orihuela. A strong point is that the exchange of schoolbooks is not only possible between students from the same school but also between different schools in the Veja Baja.. Even books not in use anymore in one of the schools school can be of value for students in another school. How does it work? At ‘Tus Libros Valen Dinero’ students can hand their schoolbooks from last year and
order at the same time the schoolbooks for the coming year. Books are ranged into A and B quality, which will reflected in the price. For submitting a book students receive an average of €10 and for purchasing they pay an average of €12.50 each book. On the website of ‘Tus Libros Valen Dinero’ students can already fill in a form for the books they want to sell and order. The sooner the form is sent, themore likely it is that books can be sold and found. Payment take place whenbooks are sold. To clarify an example. Maria goes in September from ESO 1 to ESO 2. She can hand in 10 ‘ESO 1’ books. For this she receives an amount of €100. At the same time she ordered 11 books for ESO 2. The cost of the
BRAND NEW RANGE Of

order is €137,50. In total, Maria needs only pay €37,50 to get all the schoolbooks for the new school year. More is more The more students participate in the project, the more books can be exchanged, the more families can benefit from affordable books. The project of ‘Tus Libros Valen Dinero’ is based on 20 Insitutos in the Veja Baja area. However, participation is open for every student of every Secondary school. TRIBUTE TO A GREAT MANAGER
By Tony Matthews
Regarded as one of the greatest managers in the history of the game, Sir Alex Ferguson announced his retirement as Manchester United boss on 8 May. Born in Glasgow on December 31, 1941, ‘Fergie’ scored 171 goals in 317 League games for six Scottish League clubs, including Rangers, and managed East Stirlingshire, St Mirren, Scotland and Aberdeen before taking over from Ron Atkinson as manager at Old Trafford on 6 November 1986. Over the last 26 years and eight months, he has guided United to 38 trophies, 28 of them major, including 13 Premiership titles, two Champions League triumphs and five FA Cup final victories. He has won the Manager of the Year award a record 10 times; received an OBE in 1983, a CBE in 1995 and a knighthood in 1999 (all for his services to football) and he is also a Freeman of the City of Aberdeen. ‘Fergie’ will celebrate his 1,500th game in charge of Manchester United on Sunday, away to West Bromwich Albion…. and millions, worldwide will, for sure, in heart and mind, say ‘congratulations, well done and good luck’ to one of football’s finest managers, certainly from the last half-century. David Beckham told me: “He wasn’t just the greatest and best manager I ever played under, he was also a father figure to me from the moment I arrived at Old Trafford until the day I left. Without him I would never have achieved what I have done in my career. Thank you boss and enjoy the rest!” Here, here. Everton’s David Moyes will take over the managerial duties at Old Trafford on 1st July.

Country music at the Club House Camposol have our own speakers and speaker stands. Last month a Radio microphone was purchased. We have now been offered, for free, a laptop . Whilst this magnificent gesture is welcome ,it is too much to accept, so if this proves sufficient for our needs , a nominal sum will be given to the donor . All we now require is the purchase of the (excellent) Peavey Amplifier we have borrowed over the past 3 months Meeting on the 1st Friday of each month, our latest night took place on Friday 3rd May Starting at 7.30 pm , Ann taught a line dance called Cowboy Strut, which once again was well received by those on the floor. Several requests, mainly from the Camposol Line Dance group were then played, before Tom and Helen had about 40 people on the floor to teach the couples dance, Sleaze, an easy, extremely visual, and explicit dance - Everyone enjoyed this one
We have started the last 3 nights at 7.30 pm ,primarily to ensure that there is sufficient time to play all requests, and to teach both a line dance and a couples dance , before the live music starts Several people have commented on such an early start , so as from next month---Friday 7th June, when the live music will come from Jimmy Vincent, the evening will start at 7.45pm
Interactive Murcia, 3 (sometimes 4) talented musicians from Alhama De Murcia provided the live music from 9pm to midnight, They played a varied selection of music, from Traditional to modern, with a couple of their own compositions sung. If you have the opportunity to see them, go along, You wont be disappointed! They will certainly be asked back to the Club House You may recall last month’s “report” told you about an individual who came with his slippers on, ie He forgot to put his shoes on. This time he forgot his money, What will it be next month? The girls from the line dance sold the raffle tickets (Thank you ladies) then the draw was made by Brian---What was most difficult to understand, his Scottish accent or when he called the numbers in Spanish? Thank you again to those who brought along raffle prizes! Keep these coming please Helping local charities will be high on our agenda. We have “teamed up” with Go Mad, with whom future events will be organized Amanda, who started Go Mad .gave us a brief summary of the their objectives. She informed us they always need milk. So The entry fee our next night (7th June) will be the usual €3 plus a carton of milk She then “extracted” €10 from a man to dance with her to Don Williams singing Amanda Whilst the couples dance Southern State Affair was being danced (This has raunchy, suggestive movements) Paula and Ray decided to join in. Don’t know what dance they were doing, but they certainly put a lot of effort into the raunchy section - all in good fun Any surplus funds we have is directed to buying our own sound equipment. We now
Dancing is a large part of any country music event, so on our nights, tables and chairs are cleared to provide a dance floor as large as possible –Any one who goes to the Club House for any other event would not recognize the layout, as one side of the room is all dance floor space The one problem we are coming across is the shortage of country music entertainers in this part of Spain. If you are aware of anyone who does sing / play country music please let us know.Any enquiries to telephone / text 610 632 152 E mail: helenwills46@yahoo. com

The number of Spanish people who have emigrated to the UK has trebled in the past decade, recent studies claim. Around 11,000 moved to Britain in 2002, compared to 30,000 in 2011, according to head of the High Council for Scientific Investigations (CSIC), Amparo González. But she does not believe the economic crisis in Spain is the main driving factor. Although González, an expert in sociology, says the number of Spanish people who got their first National Insurance numbers in the UK to be able to work went up by 6,000 in just one year between 2010 and 2011, which shows an ‘evident’ impact caused by the recession in their home country, she says moving abroad is ‘a costly and risky exercise’ that requires resources such as a human support network, sound knowledge of the language of the destination country, enough money to get settled until they find stable work and get their first pay packet, and no financial or family ties in Spain. Research shows that the typical profile of a Spanish migrant to the UK is aged 35 to 44 with high qualifications and financially comfortable, armed with plenty of information and usually with a job offer in the shape of a promotion already in hand. There is no real distinction between gender, since there are as many men as women moving to Britain to work. “Put another way, people who have been unemployed for two years or more, for example, are less likely to leave Spain because they generally do not have the personal or family resources to do so,” explains González. “The current level of Spanish migrants is a new situation, but is largely due to the fact that those who do so are much more highly-qualified than those who moved abroad in the 1960s or 1970s, and that they are tending to aim for countries where the move goes much more smoothly thanks to the rights every European Union citizen has in any of the other member States or countries in the wider European Economic Community [such as Iceland, Norway and Switzerland, which are not EU members], although the likelihood of their returning to Spain in the future is difficult to assess. “The government’s refusal to recognise that emigration is rising rapidly is very worrying.” Numbers of Spanish people who have left the country for the long term or for good are likely to be considerably higher, however, González adds. According to the Census of Spaniards Resident Abroad (CERA), a total of 176,770 people have moved to another country in the last five years, but this is very probably just a fraction of the true figure. “Only a minority of those who leave Spain register as residents with the Spanish Consulate in their new countries and, of the few who do so, this is rarely at the very same time as they leave but rather, in general, several years later when they are already established there. “To this end, at best the figures we have help us to detect emigration trends – albeit with some delay – but will never allow us to assess the true magnitude of the exodus of Spaniards,” concludes González.

It was a half expected but nevertheless severe shock when the vet pronounced that Lucy, The Dog That Is Not Ours, had Leishmanns. Her treatment consists of a daily pill and injection, and in order to fulfil this requirement we have to go through a daily routine of Good Cop, Bad Cop. Pete is the Good Cop, he does all the holding and soothing, while I am the Bad Cop, the inflictor of pain, the giver of the injection. Lucy is a Spanish dog, and thus has the full Spanish range of expression – euphoric highs and desperate lows. Also she is not stupid, so by the second injection she had worked out what was going on, and begun to put avoidance strategies in place. However, she seems to know that it must happen; the dread hour approaches, and no matter how discrete I am, she sees the dreadful syringe, rolls herself into as small a ball as possible and sits on my feet, her brown eyes fixed on mine in a mute plea for mercy. I scoop her up and give her to Pete to hold. She squirms josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk d e s p e r a t e l y,

craning her neck round in an endeavour to keep her eyes on the frightful instrument of torture. In a desperate attempt at avoidance she endeavours to upend herself and lie on her back so that I can’t get at her scruff. It is at this point that she starts to scream. It starts as a pitiful ululation, rising in pitch and volume as soon as I actually touch her scruff, and accompanied by vigorous wriggling. Having got hold of as much scruff as possible I give it a good rub, trusting to distraction techniques to disguise the actual moment of puncture. By now the whimper is a hearty yowl, and she has transformed into a 9 kilo hairy eel. I hang on, waiting for a moment when she is relatively upright, and insert the needle at the appropriate angle. As I do so she lets out a scream that would curdle yogurt, and redoubles her escape efforts. However, the agony soon passes, and the instant that the lifesaving liquid is within her skin she transforms into a manic embodiment of pure joy. Her wrigglings become wrigglings of glee, and she performs several laps of honour round the kitchen, as if to assure herself that she has survived the fate worse than death. She is all Spanish over-the-top emotion, making a drama out of a crisis - a brave little soldier she is not!
It’s In Our Hands
If ever you are out walking, or taking a morning drive near the beach and you see a large splodge in the distance that ranges in colour from yellow to lime green and is apparently floating at speed above the ground, don’t worry. There’s no need to call Ghost Busters, because it’s just the group from Running Wild in their flamboyant tee shirts, out on one of their regular gallops. Often on a Sunday, they are already at their customary refreshment stop in Hellies Bar when number one wife and I arrive for our caffeine interlude on the return leg of our morning pavement inspection of Villamartin. And so it was last week. The group seem to be of a certain age if I can put it that way, but oh boy, are they a fit looking bunch, which comes as no surprise to me because their leader is an old acquaintance from my days spent at the gym. Crecia was my personal torturer during my exercisemad period, before I made my escape to a more sedate life
style. I asked her once if her name was a shortened version of Lucrecia, but was assured quite indignantly that it was not, after I explained that my assumption was based on the fact that the original Lucrecia – Lucrezia Borgia – was the infamous poisoner and crucially, another sadist. That didn’t earn me any brownie points and my fitness regime was adjusted upward several notches as a result. I jest of course. I enjoyed every minute. Anyway, there they all were enjoying well earned soft drinks and coffees, and a good old natter - and a few bawdy jokes judging by the decibels they were chucking out - when another chum, Jane, shouted across that perhaps we should consider joining their Sunday morning jaunt. Not that I heard her above the din, but she repeated it to me after I made my way over to their table ‘Run? I barely made it from there to here’, I quipped, indicating my wife seated barely ten feet away. ‘We get exhausted just watching you lot’. We exchanged a few more pleasantries and from further down the table Crecia nodded ominously in my direction, which prompted me to call a cab to take me back to my seat.

‘You’re deep in thought’, wife Janet said to me a few minutes later. And I was. I had been thinking about what Jane had told me. Jane and her husband Aidan own the Quicksave mini market just across from where we were sitting. I go in to collect my copies of the Sol Times each week, which they kindly keep for me and I purchase other bits and pieces from time to time - and of course dazzle them with my devastating repartee. But I had not seen her for a couple of weeks and she told me this was because she now travels to the UK every fortnight to work as a live-in carer. Two weeks on and two weeks off is the work pattern, which is a heck of a lot of travelling and must play havoc with her Spanish home life and - here’s the kicker – which has now become a necessity. I was shocked. Well, shocked at first, but this rapidly changed to a deep sense of shame as I began to see these hard working and obliging people in a totally different light. Because their shop is an integral part of the scene in Los Dolses, we tend to simply take it for granted and assume everything is fine and dandy and it will still be there tomorrow, the day after and this time next year. But of
course they, like many others, are feeling the squeeze. The shame I felt was because I tend to talk the good talk when it comes to sermonising about supporting small businesses, but when I sat down and thought about it seriously, I realised that we do little to put our money where our mouths are – quite literally. Most of us tend to opt for the easy life and get our weekly shop under one roof for convenience sake. We also tell ourselves that it is cheaper, but I’m not so sure that it always is. But even if that were true, there are a lot of people like us, who although not rolling in cash are nevertheless reasonably comfortable and could – if we chose – frequent these businesses more often. For our part, we have promised ourselves that from now on, we will give more of our patronage where it is deserved. There would be much wringing of hands if Quicksave and others like it were to disappear and what we have to realise is, that their futures are entirely in our hands

Alqueria’s chief and only immigration officer Guillermo Trenca wasn’t exactly overworked. The only individual to apply for immigration into Alqueria was one El Chiflado who turned out to be clinically insane and now acts as policy advisor to the Cameron Government. He did once receive a bulk application but this turned out to be from the Dangerous Sports Club of Lower Wigtwizzle Wiltshire, who were hoping to break new ground. The thought of residing in Alqueria however broke their resolve and the application was withdrawn. Guillermo spends his time draughting criteria for non-existent immigrants. He covers the more thorny issues, issues which have brought down more than one Home Secretary. Regarding religion. Alqueria practises religious freedom. They could hardly do anything else. Over ninety percent of the Village’s women visit church weekly while only two percent of men believe in any superior being apart of course from Manuela, Alqueria’s own ‘femme fatale ‘. The Village priest, Sacerdote del Semblante Lánguido is an Existentialist and therefore an atheist, however this hasn’t stopped him tending to the spiritual needs of the villagers. Guillermo developed the concept of ‘Alquerianess’, producing a prototype Alquerian as a model for the prospective immigrant. Alquerian Spanish is a vital part of this model and must be learnt by those wanting to settle in the Pueblo. The local dialect puts fierce emphasis on consonants which makes “¿Cómo estás? ” sound like a declaration of war. While practising this inflection a squeegee should be kept handy to gather excess moisture and spittle. Regarding race, this was never a contentious issue in Alqueria. The promiscuous behaviour of most of the population has provided a remarkable mixing of races. Individuals of most ethnic groups are represented including several unique to Alqueria alone. The political persuasion of hopefuls isn’t even a moot point. The freedom enjoyed by the anarchic people of Alqueria is contagious and wins over the most ardent political animal. After two weeks in the Pueblo even the most law abiding can be seen hurling bricks at the town hall on a Saturday night. Guillermo Trenca is the most popular politician in the Republic of Alqueria. If questioned on his immigration policy by the more xenophobic in the Village he simply quotes the immigration figures. Zero. If however questioned by the liberal community he hands them a copy of his Immigration Criteria. His department is held as the most successful in the Alquerian establishment even though it serves none and does absolutely nothing. Perhaps it is only when politicians start to mess about with the lives of real people that problems start.

SOLTIMES MAY 2013
Last time we started to examine why files that are “lost”, well, not actually “lost”, and how to get them back easily. We also found a way to more permanently remove these files from your system. Even though, in this state of “Fully Deleted”, they can still be recovered. Today, I will explain why, when a “Windows” file is “deleted”, it isn’t actually deleted! In the days of yore, when men were men and sheep quivered, Windows used a “File Attribute Table” or FAT system. Think of this very much like a normal book. At the front is an index telling you what each chapter (“Directory” in the old days and “Folder” now) is called and what page number (Disk sector / cluster) to go to, there is extra information about how long the file is (which you and I would figure out by subtracting the next chapter page number from this one – Told you computers were stupid :-)). To “delete” (erase) a file, Windows would do 2 things. 1) In the index it would mark the first letter of the file name with an unprintable character (E5 – this is a Hexadecimal number (0-9 a-f)) and then go to the file length and mark it as having a length of zero (0) bytes. All the information would still be sat there on your hard (or Floppy) disk. As the information is still on the disk you should be able to get it back. Wait a minute! I thought that we had deleted it! All of the past 10 years financial and tax reports that you thought that you no longer want or needed ARE needed! This is why the innovative “Undelete” program was such a boon to everyone who “had a lapse in concentration”! The “Undelete” program that came with MSDOS version 3.3 onwards quite simply allowed you to replace the modified first character, then using the index information, and a quick check (as every file has an “end of file” marker), reset the length back to what it should have been. Microsoft’s method of using the next unused free space, wherever possible, meant that you had a really good chance of getting back any files that you had accidentally deleted. There are times when this method just isn’t enough! Last week, I was handed a laptop with the request, “Can you get back some very important files as …. has ‘lost’ them and can’t find them again.”. In defence of the “other person”, they hadn’t lost them all by themselves. There were fragments of a virus that had attached itself to the files (very rare) and could have been the cause for the data to be ‘lost’. So Not always “User Error” :-) Using software similar to that used by the forensic departments of the police forces around the world, I was able to get back much of the data that hadn’t been corrupted but was inaccessible to standard recovery methods. It was the software, written by extremely talented writers – not me – that did the clever stuff. I just used it appropriately. Next time we find out why it is still possible to recover files that have been overwritten, and counter-measures to prevent people like me being able to recover truly sensitive personal information. So until next time.... For further information or advice on computing, contact Trevor on 689 892 745 or canducomputing@hotmail.co.uk
Some things seem to have been around for forever; The Queen, Steven Gerrard, Ryan Giggs, and of course old Fergie himself. I was just 20 when he first took over as manager of Manure, sorry Man Utd. Now 26 years and 1499 games later he is hanging up his hair drier to spend more time with his wife, his wine and his racehorses; quite possibly not in that order. Sir Alex Ferguson is known to all whether or not the ‘beautiful game’ is followed and English football will miss the man. People don’t like change and I am no different; as for seven years Movistar have treated my bank account as their own personal piggy bank. Yet I stuck with them reasoning its better the devil I know. Weeks of my life have been lost listening to that awful ‘are we happy’ song that’s played
REVIEW it...
The Seamstress by Maria Duenas
This wonderfully exciting story is set during the Spanish civil war and moves into the second world war. Duenas spent some time researching the period thoroughly and she has successfully managed to integrate historical characters such as Franco, Beigbeder and Serrano Suner into a compelling fictional novel about a young seamstress known as Sira which chronicles more than six turbulent years in which her mettle is tested and she develops a resilience and courage to outwit adversity. An incredible transformation from a naïve 12 year old living in the poorer quarters of Madrid with many constraints placed on her, fatherless, growing into a wiser, self-assured woman with determination to succeed as a business woman. Within the novel, the protagonist Sira proves a testimony to bravery and determination. By the end of this epic novel, she feels more in control of her life, no longer allowing herself to be manipulated like a puppet or like someone moving a pawn on a chessboard. People are NOT political pawns. In the early days her life seems mapped out-apprenticed as a seamstress which she describes as her logical fate. Her talent was soon recognised by the owner Dona Manuela Godina and Sira’s “greatest joy” was in taking the finished garments to exclusive residences in Madrid where Sira witnessed lavish and affluent surroundings, trappings of wealth which contrasted sharply with the poverty that surrounded her. She refers to it as the “incongruity” that existed in society. The reader is made to feel that Sira will yearn for life’s riches too once she becomes an accomplished seamstress owning her own atelier and dressing wealthy European women which in fact is what will eventually happen. Ignacio was the first man in her life and because Sira was unambitious and without any professional expectations, girls like her had few options other than getting married, settling down and having children. She did feel intense affection and described him as “sweetly gentle as a pillow” but she had not discovered passion until her engagement and imminent wedding. It was in the shape of seductive and alluring Ramiro Arribas that she tasted the forbidden fruit. Their first meeting is sensual and evokes passion. Sira was unaware that he was scrutinising her body: “He had absorbed the outlines of my body and the slow cadence of each of my movements.” She is naïve and still chaste although she recognises the dangerous signs when she compares him to a wolf that scented food or danger in the way he imposed himself on her. His caresses gave her goosebumps and she felt on the “threshold of paradise” but simultaneously and worryingly perhaps heading towards the “slaughterhouse?” She
became so obsessed with his powerful seduction that instead of opting for comfortable domesticity she chose to launch herself into the void out of desire, nothing more. He desired me, he revered me and clung to me as though my body were the only mooring in the turbulent oscillations of his existence. Unbounded love is how Sira describes it. When the political situation is about to explode, Sira and Ramiro relocate to Morocco. It is March 1936. Amidst the height of their passion, Sira’s soul becomes battered and an unscrupulous con man emerges, one who can disappear and reinvent himself to take advantage of other unsuspecting victims like Sira. She is left devastated during those penurious times: useless, unfit to face life, unable to survive. Candelaria Ballesteros known as the Matutera offers a sanctuary followed by a dangerous plan to escape from their poverty trap and salvation. But everything comes with a price. A heavy one. The story then takes on a different dimension with espionage: Discreet campaigns of resistance. Observing. Infiltrating. Obtaining information and strengthening a network of underground collaboration. The civil war divided and destroyed the peninsular causing starvation, broken families, mistrust, suspicion and people prepared to sell their souls to the devil to survive and feed their already emaciated and helpless families. It gave the Germans and British an opportunity to exploit and infiltrate into political activities. Some of this was achieved by undercover agents acting as spies. What are the options for a metamorphosed Sira to continue surviving and surviving well? Should she play with fire and get mixed up with espionage, throw caution to the wind? Yes, she certainly grows up and learns to profit from this dirty art of war but she compromises her integrity and risks her life. Once the story moves from Morocco to Madrid then Lisbon you will find it riveting and it ends on a sentimentally, romantic note! Publishers: Penguin - ISBN: 978-0-670-92003-7

All change!
when put on hold for eternity. Operators have kept me on the line for hours only to find out later that everything that was agreed mysteriously never happened. Once I had a Movistar internet dongle that when I tried to cancel they said it could only be done if I knew the dongles phone number. It’s a dongle not a phone I fruitlessly explained time after time, so after months of trying I cancelled the direct debit. I received my first solicitors’ letter from them a few weeks later with a new one popping onto the doormat every fortnight each time demanding 72 quid. This went on for two years and kept me in firelighters as my solicitor advised they would never take me to court. Finally when I needed to upgrade my phone they had me by the short and curlies so I paid up knowing some solicitor in Madrid had charged them a fortune in legal fees. Last year when I first threatened to change operators they put me on this amazing tariff, 40€ all in apparently. All was fine the first month and then the bills climbed higher again. Finally after paying a 240€ bill for April last week – yes that’s right 240 bloomin Euros I vowed to change. Well Mrs Amore told me to in truth!
Suddenly Movistar couldn’t be more helpful, calling and texting me repeatedly, imploring even pleading with me to stay. As switchover day loomed the offers got even better. Finally when they offered me free weekly full body massages by Kylie, a Enjoy Stephens musings? Disneyland and an iPhone 5 I grudgingly called them. Now I realise we live in Spain and yes I do speak reasonable Spanish but negotiating a new contract and arranging flights and hotels to see Mickey Mouse has to be done in English or they may have cheekily booked me into Disneyland Paris. Movistar however, in their infinite wisdom don’t have a single English speaker in the anti-defection department, so the great escape was back on and I metaphorically clambered over the barbed wire and ran across the minefield to Vodaphone and freedom. I will have to have my picture taken with Mickey and Minnie another time. Mrs Amore and I now have 2 very posh Android phones and a free dongle. Revenge is sweetened further as Movistar have to pop round to Casa Amore to fit a phone line so that Vodaphone can also supply us internet. I would seriously advise all stock market investors to sell their holdings in Movistar as their balance sheet will be much the poorer without me on it and the share price will surely nosedive!

CD MONTESINOS Monte signed off their final home game of the season in style, although in front of a disappointing crowd of only 145, which after a run of 3 defeats was not surprising. After only 5 minutes Vaz put Edu through, only to see his effort hit the post and bounce to safety. On 20 minutes Edu collected a long through ball, and after rounding the full back, crossed to Vaz, who opened the scoring with a simple tap in. Again Vaz broke into the box only to be dispossessed trying to dribble round the goalkeeper. It was all Monte now, and Vaz again shot over the top, followed by Iker firing just wide minutes before the break. The second half started with Vaz setting off on a 50 yard run down the wing, only to see his cross put over the bar by Edu. On 55 minutes, Lopez was called on to deal with a free kick which he spooned, not for the first time this season into the path of an
opposition forward, 1-1. Wallace was then replaced by Jonhi, as Almoradi started to get on top. Another fumble by Lopez gave away a corner which thankfully came to nothing. Monte started to regain the initiative, and saw a free kick from just outside the box skim the post. On 72 minutes Manuel replaced Javi, and a few minutes later Vaz was brought down in the box, converting the resulting penalty himself. Vaz completed his hat trick a few minutes later, when he

ran into the box and rounded the keeper to the delight of the home fans, now shouting for more. M&A then gave the fans what they asked for by blasting in a cross from Vaz, who to be honest was running the opposition ragged. A good performance all round and a good following is expected next when we travel to Thader for our final game. Howard Yeats
FC TORREVIEJA
FC TORREVIEJA - TORRY LOSE FINAL HOME GAME TO TWO WELL TAKEN GOALS Last Sunday Torry played relegation threatened Ribarroja who occupied the 4th and final relegation spot going into the game and had to win to have any chance of survival. Torry secured their place in the Tercera next season the previous weekend, so with no pressure on them hopefully they could try and serve up some exciting football to extend their unbeaten run and bring to a close their home games on a high. Torry were without the injured Abel. Recent signing, keeper Pepitiu was absent with Manolo starting in goal for Torry. Torrys starting line-up: Manolo (Tur 45 ‘), Vicente, Burguillos, Rafa, Sergio, Jorge, Dani, Gasch, Luis Carlos, Villanueva (Manu Amores 55’), Koeman (José Manuel 27 ‘). The match was played at Torry’s spiritual home, the Vicente Garcia stadium. The football club marked the return to the Vicente Garcia and survival in the Tercera by making it a “fiesta” day with prematch entertainment and fun with

With the sun out there were many supporters wearing their FC Torrevieja football shirts which was good to see. Before the game a presentation was made to the Torry Army’s “Player of the Season” Koeman. The game kicked off in front of a crowd around the 400 mark. The game started evenly . After 8 minutes the opposition came close to scoring when Burguillos had to clear off the line and then Sergio block an effort from the clearance at the near post. After 21 minutes Manolo had to be quick and alert to dive at the feet and take the ball off an opposition forward who had broken clear. After 27 minutes a blow for Torry when Koeman had to leave the field with an injury and be replaced by Jose Manuel. The game became a bit flat and scrappy. After 38 minutes the opposition broke down the Torry left and the opposition no. 9, who looked a good prospect, put in a

cross which Manolo tipped against the bar. After 42 minutes after good build up play Vicente was presented with a good shooting opportunity and let fly with a rasping rising shot which just cleared the bar. Soon after Jose Manuel had a chance but his shot towards the bottom corner was parried by the Ribarroja keeper and Villanueva screwed the loose ball wide from an acute angle. A disappointing first half drew to a close. Torry brought on Javi Tur in goal for the second half. Torry started the second half in more determined mood and started to ask questions of the Ribarroja defence. After 58 minutes a super ball in from Sergio found 3 Torry’s players beyond the defence. Jorge was first to the ball and a goal looked likely but he dallied on it too long and a defender got back to block his eventual effort. After 65 minutes Jose Manuel had a clear shooting chance which he struck firmly but too close to the keeper who blocked it. After 70 minutes Torry had a good break down their right and Vicente cut the ball back to Manu Amores whose mis-hit effort was chested into the back of the net at the far post by Jose Manuel but was ruled out for offside . After 75 minutes a direct free kick from inside the D by an opposition forward produced a brilliant save by Javi Tur. After 79 minutes the opposition were awarded another free-kick from a similar position after a foul by Burguillos. This time the free-kick was struck magnificently by a Ribarroja sub, who had entered the fray a few minutes earlier, and although Javi Tur got a hand to the ball he couldn’t prevent it from
going into the roof of the net for a GOALLLLL. The Burriana players celebrated wildly as if they had won the cup. After 83 minutes a brilliant run from Jorge opened up the Ribarroja defence and his low cross fell to Jose Manuel who scuffed his shot from 6 yards out. After 84 minutes a Ribarroja corner was met by another Ribarroja sub, who had just come on, whose bullet header flew into the back of the Torry net for a GOALLLLL. Again this prompted wild celebrations from the Ribarroja players and bench. Torry did create another chance after good work by Luis Carlos and Gasch set up Jose Manuel again but he mis-hit his shot when well placed. The game came to a close and the Torry fans trudged home after seeing their team miss a few chances and succumb to two excellent goals from Ribarroja who have now given themselves a real chance of survival after three 2-0 wins in a row. Torry have now slipped to 14th place in the table. This weekend Torry make the long journey to Burriana to play their last game of the season. Burriana are still not safe yet and will be looking for a win. Hopefully Torry will deny them that and return home victorious. The Torry Army is running a coach to the game and making a full day of it. A disappointed Darrylldinho following his adopted team in Spain fail to win their final home game and bow out in style in front of their home supporters. ORIEL 1 v. DAYA NUEVA 7 INFANTILS G10s CHAMPIONS DAYA WIN WELL AT ORIEL With Callosa this morning ending any hope that Cox had of pipping Daya for the title, meant Daya arrived at Oriel this evening already crowned champions. As expected it was all Daya from the off. The visitors won a corner on 2 minutes and Alberto headed home the opening goal. Marcos doubled the score on 5 minutes to put the visitors well in control. With the title already won you could have forgiven Daya if they had taken their foot off the gas but this wasn’t the case, as on 18 minutes Manual scored the 3rd, the same player made it 4 - 0 just 2 minutes later following yet another good Daya move. To their credit the home side kept battling away but were just no match for the champions. The Oriel goalkeeper was having a good game and was the reason the scoreline was still respectable. At this stage the home side were having their best spell of the game but carried no real threat up front. There were no further goals before the break. The second half was just minutes old and Daya should have scored twice more from two excellent chances. On 40 minutes Alberto rose well to score Daya’s 5th with a good header. Jesus added the 6th a minute later and for the second week running 10 or more goals looked achievable. Oriel’s keeper was having an inspired game and was the sole reason the scoreline remained in single figures. Oriel won their first corner on 47 minutes from which they scored a good headed goal to make the score more respectable at 6 - 1. Francisco renewed Daya’s hopes of double figures following his good run and shot for the 7th goal on 60 minutes. Right to the final whistle the home side’s goalkeeper was performing heroics and kept the visitors’ scoreline to just the 7 goals. This wasn’t vintage Daya this evening but, hey, they had just won the League Title. The massive crowd of support Daya brought with them were very very vocal with their chanting of “Campiones Campiones” and, of course the obligatory numerous fire crackers. Man of the Match was undoubtedly the homeside’s goalkeeper, just fantastic. On returning to Daya the celebrations began and went on until the early hours ! Daya Dave Team Sponsor: Segurlab

C.D. CIEZA 2 MAZARRON FC 8
After last week’s creditable draw against the league champions, Mazarron travelled to bottom of the table Cieza without four first team regulars but still managed to register their biggest victory for over four years. Mazarron took the lead after 12 minutes when Diego junior played the ball inside the full back for Alfonso to hit a first time shot into the corner of the net. After clever play between the youngsters Jose Da and Diego, Cecilio’s shot was saved by the Cieza keeper but Mazarron increased their lead after 19 minutes. Barrachina’s long ball was controlled by Diego junior who slipped past a defender before hitting a crisp left foot shot into the far corner. Mazarron goalkeeper Ruben, deputising for Jose Iker, was only called into action once in the first half when he reacted well to block a rare Cieza attack. After 35 minutes Cecilio picked up a loose ball 40 yards from goal and, seeing the keeper well off his line, sent a perfect chip over his head and into the roof the net to make it 3-0 at half time. The second half continued in the same vein with Mazarron having almost all the play and they increased the lead after 53 minutes when Ruben and Diego exchanged passes before the young Diego scored his second with another left foot shot. Cieza pulled a goal back two minutes later when Martinez raced through the Mazarron defence and

20 players turned out for today’s round of golf at Alenda Golf course. Scores were fairly average considering that the conditions were good, although the greens were a little difficult to judge due to recently having been tyned. Everyone had a good day out, lovely weather and good company along with the usual friendly banter. The scores were as follows:Only one category today because of the attendance numbers. 1st - Dave Harwood 33pts. 2nd - John Saunders 32pts. 3rd - Dave Titchen 31pts on c/b. evaded three half- hearted tackles before hitting a firm shot past Ruben. Mazarron almost made it 5 after 57 minutes when Ruben raced down the right wing but his fine cross was just turned away by a defender with Diego junior waiting at the far post hoping to complete his hat trick. On 75 minutes Santi, not to be outdone by Cecilio, tried a speculative shot from 45 yards which again saw the Cieza keeper off his line, and the ball once more sailed into the roof of the net. Mazarron scored twice more in the next three minutes. First, Barrachina made a surging run down the right and his cross was turned in at the far post by captain Diego. Then a minute later substitute Matt Clarke become the first British player ever to score for Mazarron when his fierce left foot drive was too hot to handle for the Cieza keeper who could only help the ball over the line. Cieza scored again after 87 minutes when Ruben allowed an innocuous shot from Balsalobre to slip from his grasp and bounce over him into the net before another Mazarron substitute, crowd favourite Pepe Pollo, made it 8-2 in the last minute when he coolly rounded the keeper before slotting the ball home. Team: Ruben, Barrachina, Diego, Clemente, Perico (Pollo), Alfonso, Jose Da (Brayan), Santi, Diego jnr, Jose Ruben ( Matt Clarke), Cecilio (Toni) Man of the Match Diego. Best back 9 - Stuart Taylor 18pts. Nearest the pin - Geoff Branton. Nearest the pin in 2 - Steve Hamilton. 2 ball prize winner - John Saunders. Well done to all the prize winners. Our next game is on 16th May, also at Alenda. 1st tee time is 09:50. The following week’s game is at Altorreal on 23rd May, 1st tee time is 10:15am. MAGGOTS END
RODS AND REELS Well this week saw the finish of the Pedrera for match fishing. When we arrived there the water was up to the road at the broken bridge and still rising, as I intimated that I thought the authorities would fill it up again but just not this quick!!!!. After a brief discussion we were on our way to Blanca, another favourite of a lot of anglers???. The day was very warm with little wind and the fishing wasn´t that bad considering it was Blanca. There was only one angler who did not weigh. Dave Hutchinson fishing the paste had a carp of 3.74 kilo´s ( 8.25 lbs ). Maggot still seems to be the best bait, but you can get plagued with bleak, the joys of big and small fish living together. Top Rods on the day 1st Ian ( Irish Wizard ) Dalzell fishing the feeder using maggot with 8.40 kilo´s. 2nd Alan ( The Chairman ) Reid fishing the feeder using maggot with 5.96 kilo´s. 3rd Dave ( Yours Truly ) Hoare fishing the feeder using maggot
and the whip for bleak with 5.61 kilo´s. PLEASE NOTE The club has some vacancies at present, if you are interested in joining please contact Derek Swann on 966729293 or 603535771. ABBEY ANGLING RESULTS Supplied by Terry Screen The 7th round of the Spring Series was fished at the Embalsa de Argos on the 7th May. The water is still high and in the trees with not a lot of colour in it, and the temperature is down which is probably still recovering from the snow water that came in a few week’s ago. This is our first visit this year and on our arrival there was a Spanish club just about to put there pegs in, but after showing them our paperwork it was explained that we were booked to fish the left side of the lake and they were booked to fish on the dam wall side which is on the right hand side. To determine left and right banks if you look at the dam wall the left hand side is always looking down stream on the river. The match itself produced some good weights with four anglers over

ITV ORIHUELA RFC 7’S TEAM KEEPS ON ROLLING As the 7’s season continues so does the 100% record of ITV Orihuela RFC in the competition, making it an incredible season for the club in its 40th year. After winning the Alicante league last year they are well on the way to doing the same this year with the Murcia one. At the weekend they went to play in Cartagena where they continued from two weeks before in Murcia, winning their first game against Murcia XV 33-7, followed by beating a Barbarians team 29-0 and finally the home team 17-0. Unfortunately I was not there to see it, but have been told it was an overall solid performance by the squad who have worked had in training and is now showing on the pitch. In the morning the U18’s took their experience from the touring team, Barnet Elisabethians up to La Vila beating Alicante University 27-0 with Adrian, Armando, Jose, Gregory and Javi scoring the tries with Jorge getting the conversions. Then against their hosts they won 12-5 with Gregory again on the score sheet and also Joel getting the other try and Jorge the conversion. In the last game against Elche they narrowly lost 10-7 with Jose getting
the try and Jorge converting it. This season the teams have grown from strength to strength and have gone out knowing that they are able to beat anyone. Just hoping that they can take this fantastic season into the next one. This weekend Orihuela RFC are in action at the ITV Orihuela RFC 7’s at the foot ball stadium, Campo Municipal De Los Arcos, for the next round is this year’s Murcia 7’s league, kicking off at around 16.30. This coming weekend is cup final weekend at the rugby bar in Rojales the Steakhouse. Starting on Friday Leinster v Stada at 21.00 in the Amlin Cup. On Saturday it is Toulon v Clermont at 18.00 in the Heineken Cup. Looking forward to seeing another good turn out down there this weekend. I am down at the market this weekend with all of the rugby branded clothing together with new stock before going off to the Orihuela RFC 7’s where I will be there with everything as well. Also there is another rugby 7’s tournaments in Albacete. Training is at the Miguel Hernandez University ground at 20.15 on Tuesday and Thursday for the
seniors and juveniles. The juniors start at 18.15. So if you are interested, dig out those rugby boots and come along and see for yourself what it is like. New players are always welcome no matter what age or skill level you are. If you would like more information about what is going on in the club, you can contact the club by phoning myself, Garry on 692 767 242, and for the juniors contact Oscar on 600 871 606 (Spanish)
