Murcia
The Gobierno Regional has announced that it has already completed the first legal steps notifying Sacyr and its partners of the termination of the Corvera contract, unless there is a last minute resolution to the conflict, according to spokesperson José Ballesta. Ballesta said that the Consejero de Obras Públicas, Antonio Sevilla, had given notice to the Concesionaria last month to urge them to open the facility, otherwise action would be taken. No reply was received. If a new tender is opened then the Gobierno Regional believes that there will be companies interested in bidding for the airport. It is notable that the Gobierno Regional has not itself invested a single euro, but on the contrary, is gaining interest as a guarantor of the 200 million euros. If a new tender were to be put out, any future concessionaire would assume the obligations of the loan. Even though the Gobierno Regional has no date for the opening of the airport, this conflict can only serve to delay the commencement of service of this airport even further.
Almoradí
An oil tanker carrying 33,000 litres overturned on the CV-91 near Almoradí. The accident was notified to the 112 services, and firefighters were called to control the leak with foam, which formed a mattress over the spillage. The tanker contained 25,000 litres of diesel and a further 8,000 litres of gasoline. The Centro de Coordinación de Emergencias (CCE) and the Centro de Gestión de Tráfico ordered the closing of the CV-91 in both directions at the limits of the municipality of Almoradí, between kilometres 14 and 19.

La Calahorra held an exhibition entitled ‘ ‘La Festa a Través de sus Carteles 1941-2012’, (La Festa through their posters 1941-2012’). This announces the commencement of a week of activities organised by the Junta Rectora to promote the XII Aniversario of the Proclamación Patrimonio de la Humanidad (Proclamation as a World Heritage Site). The event was well attended, among those present were the Comisario de la Muestra y Patrono, (Curator and Patron) Antonio Ródenas; Presidente de la Junta Rectora, (Chairman of the Governing Board) Fernando García, Director del Instituto Valenciano de Restauración, (Director of the Valencian Institute of Restoration) Carmen Pérez, and la alcaldesa, (Mayoress) Mercedes Alonso. The culminating event will take place at 12 am on Sunday 19th May in the Gran Teatro, and will be a concert by the Capella del Misteri. Tickets for the August programme are available online, through Instanticket, or can be purchased in person at the box office of the Casa de la Festa, from 21st May.
Moraira
Bernhard Schulz, a 74 year old German national from Moraira, has been found after being missing for 3 days. He had gone out as usual for a walk with the family dog, a black Labrador named Bijou, but did not return. His wife, Kirsten, fearing that her husband and dog had met with an accident, called neighbours, and together they scoured the countryside to no avail. To add to Kirsten’s fears as time went by and her husband and dog remained missing, was the fact that Bernhard suffers from Parkinson’s disease, and would not have taken his medication. Herr Schulz was eventually found by Bobby, a dog from the rescue services, who followed his trail, and led the rescuers to the deep overgrown ditch among thick pine woods into which he had fallen. They were assisted to find his exact location by the barking of his dog, Bijou. During his ordeal Bijou never left him, even curling up on top of him to keep him warm during the night, without which protection from the cold he would almost certainly have perished. He was dehydrated, suffered scratches and bruises, and sustained a knock which incapacitated him as he fell, but is now recovering well in Dénia hospital.
Llíria
Adrián García, 23, who needed an arthroscopy on his knee, was dumbfounded when he came round after the operation and was told that he would have to pay 120€ for the operation and the external knee brace that had been fitted to keep his leg immobile while his knee healed. Adrián is currently in financial difficulties, and asked for payment to be deferred until 28th of this month. However, two days after the operation a female representative from the orthopaedic firm which supplied the brace visited him in hospital and told him that he would have to pay 152€, 122€ of which would be refunded by the Regional Health Authorities. Adrián again explained his circumstances, but she was adamant that payment would have to be made immediately, and removed the brace on the spot. A spokesperson for the Hospital said that at no point did it order anyone to remove the brace, and that it was the Orthopaedic firm itself which took this action. However, the Arnau de Vilanova Hospital then fitted Adrián with a plaster cast, which they admitted would not be as effective. This was proved to be the case, as he had to be re-admitted with extreme knee pain, due to his knee having come out of joint with the plaster cast. Adrián’s story was heard by another Llíria resident, who had a brace of his own, which he was able to lend to him.

Alicante
The foreign market sales of food and footwear remain strong, and are a major driver of the Alicante economy, which has suffered a fall in domestic demand since the crisis. Exports grew by no less than 10.9% in the first quarter of the year, totalling €1,168 million. This represents a sharp rise over the rest of Spain, and four points higher than Valencia. The determinant of this good export performance is due to the main customers: France; up 10.1%; Germany up 20%; United Kingdom up 19%, and Russia up 27%. The Russian market is already greater than the US, Dutch, Chinese, Norwegian, Belgian, Polish or Algerian markets. The trade balance of the province of Alicante is positive with a turnover of 390,000 euros in just three months, while the trend for the whole of Spain is negative, due to the crisis and the slowdown in domestic demand.

Press release from Councillor Jeff Wiszniewski
Concejalia de Urbanizaciones Ayuntamiento de San Fulgenio On Friday May the 10th, the proposal by Councillor Jeff Wiszniewski of the PIPN political group, which had the backing of the councillors of the PP was approved in an extraordinary council meeting. The PSOE headed by Trinidad Martínez voted against the proposal and the APFU headed by Mariano Martí, Mark Lewis and the rest of the councillors, abstained. It calls to the National Government to put a delay on the Law 7/2012 of October 12 regarding the declaration of assets abroad which every resident of Spain must declare. This law severely prejudices the interests of foreign citizens residing in Spain.

CHARITY RACE IN AID OF ALZHEIMER’S The Alzheimer’s Association of Torrevieja, ask if we would give their “Charity Race” a mention. Pleased so to do: The starting pistol goes off at 9 AM, on Sunday June 2nd.. at the Torrevieja Headquarters, which is located in the new (But at one time was the site of the old) Station Building, not surprisingly, in Avenida Estacion, Torrevieja. The run is about 14 KMS., and is predominately along “The Greenway”. This, as regular readers of my occasional jottings know, is the permanent way of the old railway, between
Sport
Torrevieja and the main line to the City of Orihuela, so for that reason alone, it should be fairly flat! More information can be obtained from the association on 966 792 500, also 636 128 350, or electronically by contacting: afatorrevieja@ hotmail.com Following the race, one could do far worse than refreshing one’s self at the Bar Estacion, across the road, taking a look at the old railway photographs from a time when steam and diesel locomotives, ran along that very “Greenway”.
SCATTERBROOK FARM IN PILAR DE LA HORADADA? It would seem that the council in Pilar de la Horadada, would wish it’s reseidents to push out their wheelbarrows, and “Grow their own”. The council is providing some 35 plots of land, as allotments, to pensioners, unemployed and families in financial difficulties. Councillor Aurelio Samper explaind that it’s a healthy pastime, and will provide fresh vegetables for each family to take home and cook. The plotholders will not be permitted to grow foreign species, or make use of pesticides. They will not be allowed to sell their harvest, but will be encouraged to exchange whatever they grow, with adjoining allotment holders, on site. MY PARK, MY PASSION, MY HISTORY. May 24th., is European Day of Parks! Not a lot of people know that! The place to be is the Natural Park of the Lakes of La Mata. The idea behind this “Day of Parks”, is to encourage everyone who enjoys nature, to get together and share their passion and experiences. To help this along, members of the International Environmental Volunteers (Asociacio’n Rutas y Caminos de la Sal) who work in collaboration with the Nature Park, are to make a presentation to show the results of work they have carried out during the year. Afterwards, all who attend, will be offered a guided visit. The Park personnel will lead the walk, along with the volunteers. The day gets off the ground at around 10.30 AM, in the reception area. At 10.45 Hrs., the presentation will take
place, with all the up to date results, and details of future projects for the Environment Volunteers. At 11.30, wait for it! Breakfast will be served!!! After a hearty repast, a guided stroll to the boardwalk and Pinada recreation area, will help to walk off the calories. At 13.00 Hrs., it will be time to say farewell for another year, unless you would like to become a volunteer of course! The Europarc Federation, currently has some 400 members in 35 countries, and works closely with policy institutions at the European Commission level, along with international programmes such as LIFE and Natura 2000. It’s that time again, in Torrevieja’s Plaza de la Constitucio’n, when Knights on horseback can be expected to gallop along the pedestrianised streets surrounding this splendid Plaza. The sweet scent of cinnamon, nutmeg and saffron, will no doubt, mix with the appetizing smell of roasting hog above a fire of orange and olive wood, along with a fermenting barrel or two of locally brewed ale. Medieval times covered a between the 5th., and 15th., century. A bit of a dodgy time to be around, unless you were well off, or enjoyed connections in high places. Matthew Hopkins, the Witchfinder General, was a force to be reckoned with during the later parts of the 15th., century. A visit to the local Apothecary, often meant a course of bloodletting along with the application of leaches! I’m sure this three day market will be pleasant place to spend some time, visiting the many stalls, and enjoying a slice of hog, washed down with a glass of old ale. Cheers! rude not to.

Ex-Chief Executive Officer of the Caja Madrid bank, Miguel Blesa is behind bars due to alleged ‘illegalities’ in his purchase of City National Bank of Florida, in the USA. He was unable to find the 2.5-million-euro bailrelease required by judge Elpidio José Silva to keep him out of jail, so is being held in custody at Madrid’s Soto del Real prison. According to a report by ThinkSpain, Silva calls it ‘appalling’ to have bought the Florida-based bank ‘right in the middle of the economic tsunami’ Spain is currently suffering and considers that the decision to do so may have caused the collapse of the financial entity. A report dated April 2010 shows that the purchase price ‘exceeded’ those paid by Spanish firms Banco Popular and Banco Sabadell when they bought other banks based in Miami, and that the Office of the Controller of the Currency (OCC), which supervises the financial system in the USA, had warned of ‘extremely relevant deficits in the supervision of the board of directors’ of City National Bank of Florida when considering the general economic instability, and with no viable business strategy in place’. The OCC considered the City National Bank of Florida had a ‘high and growing strategic risk’ attaching to it.
In the meantime, the Bank of Spain claimed that the level of growth forecast by Caja Madrid for the period 2009 to 2014 inclusive had been inflated. The accusation against Blesa claims there was ‘an absence of even the least credible analysis of acceptable risk’; a ‘clearly insufficient study of the market cornered’, and the payment of ‘an inflated price’ with an ‘absence of any of the requisite administrative checks’. It refers to ‘deliberate ignorance’ on the part of people with ‘vast experience, at expert level, of banking operations’. Caja Madrid acquired 83 per cent of City National Bank of Florida, the sixth-largest private bank in the state of Florida, for 927 million dollars, and the remainder in 2010 for a further 190 million dollars. Anti-corruption campaign association Manos Limpias (‘Clean Hands’) says the judge’s decision to jail Blesa was ‘objective, independent, considered and exemplary’, and that he was in possession of ‘sufficient evidence’ to show that the purchase of the Florida bank was harmful to Caja Madrid. The group adds that the decision turned Caja Madrid into ‘a type of haven from which the CEO and his board of directors handed out credits amongst themselves freely and without any kind of guarantee’.
MEPs Question Spain’s Use of EU Grants for Bull-fighting
Four Spanish MEPs say they believe their country is using EU agriculture grants on promoting and televising bull-fighting, and have called for an investigation and possible sanctions. According to press reports, Alfred Bosch, Ana Miranda, Raúl Romeva and Ramón Tremosa say these grants are not even used on the actual breeding of bulls, but on filming, entry tickets, repairing and decorating bull-rings, advertising, TV rights, and benefits for promoters of and companies in the bull-fighting industry. Spain receives around 130 million in agricultural grants for bull-breeding, which would translate to 240 euros per hectare of land used for the purpose. The MEPs say the bull-fighting industry would be ‘on the edge of bankruptcy’ if it were not for this money. They have called for ‘greater transparency’ from EU member States as to what they spend their grants on. Additionally, they have called for the EU to stop giving grants to any bull-related activities and for member States to be fined for using agricultural funding for ‘inefficient’ economic sectors such as ‘breeding bulls for a questionable form of entertainment’.

Double podium for Supermoto brothers For the first time this year both of the British Supermoto racing brothers from Murcia were in action at the 2nd round of the Valencian championship at Oliva, near Denia. The brothers were in devastating form, with Mat FordDunn racing in the SM Masters class and younger brother Anthony in the tougher SM Open category. Both brothers were trying new rear suspension parts that made the handling of the bikes near
perfect for the fast flowing corners of the Oliva race track. Qualifying went well, with Anthony 2nd in his class and Mat on pole for the SM masters. With the two classes racing together it was the first time this year that the brothers had lined up on the same grid. The first of their two races saw Anthony lead the opening laps before being overtaken by Spanish Ace, Israel Esclarera. The two riders battled hard for the rest of the race with Israel taking the win with Anthony a very close 2nd. Mat was a little too keen away from the start of the first race and had
to make a jump start, stop and go penalty before rejoining the race. The penalty didn’t stop him from charging through the field to finish a close 2nd behind the leader in the SM Masters class. The 2nd race saw Anthony repeat his fantastic start from race 1 and this time he opened up a small lead until a mistake in the dirt section allowed Israel past and Anthony had to be content with another 2nd position. Mat managed a clean start this time, and soon battled his way into the lead of the SM masters class, opening up a lead to finish first at the flag and take the overall SM masters victory with his 2nd-1st results. Anthony managed a superb 2nd overall in the much tougher SM Open class with his two 2nd positions. The Brothers and their sponsors, ‘Advance Moves International Removals’ would like to thank the many spectators and race fans that turned up to the race and the support and encouragement that was given at a great days racing.
Cardenal Belluga
WOW! The Cardenal Belluga Theatre Group’s latest production “MOVIES & MUSICALS” was a sellout, last Friday night. For an amateur production, the audience was amazed at the professionalism and energy of the enthusiastic cast of ladies and gentleman of a certain age. They managed to recreate scenes from more than 20 memorable movies or musicals, with a spattering of comedy sketches and an unbelievable tap dancing routine from eight synchronized ladies in gorgeous shimmering turquoise blue costumes. It was difficult to keep up with the many costume changes, from the opening number, in mainly monochrome, through to a stage full of Indian squaw’s and braves, including Mini HAHA. The second half opening number ‘Master of the House’ from ‘Les Mis’ recreated the scene of innate debauchery worthy of any professional production. For the finale, which enables everyone taking part to have ‘their moment‘, the whole stage was full of silver, gold and turquoise as they portrayed a splendid rendition of ‘Lullaby of Broadway’. It was two hours of indulgence for all and the sellout enabled the Theatre Group to present two cheques on the night, 1,000 euros to SEM local Ambulance service and a special donation to the wonderful Cunningham Nurses in fond memory of Val Walker, a prominent member of the group who is sadly missed. Please check out our website www.thecardenalbellugatheatregroup. com for any information. Please make a note in your diaries that the show will be repeated later in the year.

Crafts, puppets and juggling in La Nucía The coming Sundays, the weekly craft fair in La Nucía offers not only original craft work, but also juggling and puppet shows. On 19 you can learn to make soap in a workshop at 12:45 a.m. while puppets Maxi and Dixi play their musical instruments and on the 26th the juggler from Circo Kono will come back. Every week another group of crafts people will show and sell their work: potters, leather workers, silver smiths, a blacksmith, a bookbinder, someone making wooden toys and puzzles, others painting curtains and cushions or making beautiful sculptures. Some 40 artists and craft people take turns to offer more variety. This way Amata, the organizing craft association, tries to establish a meeting point where people looking for good quality hand made goods can find them and actually talk with the craftmen and women. Some ten or twelve stalls are set up every Sunday morning from 10 am till 2 pm in front of the Town Hall. In the month of May you can also see the children that do their First Communion in the church on the same square. There is also a tourist information stand, where you can join the free guided tours through the Old Town, starting at 11, 12 and 1 o’clock. Fair and guided tours are a nice extension to your visit to the weekly boot sale (rastro) or can be combined with an excursion into the interior, as La Nucía is on the road to places like Guadalest, the Fuentes del Algar, Tárbena or Polop. On the web site www.amata.es of Amata you will find more information about the fair, with direct links to a list of participants http://www.amata.es/LaNucPart.html and photos of previous weeks http://www.amata. es/LaNucFoto.html. The Samaritans on The Catwalk On May 4th volunteers and friends took to the catwalk at the Punta Marina Commercial Centre for the Samaritans Fashion Show. Entering into the spirit of things and demonstrating skills hitherto hidden, the volunteers modelled and posed in outfits donated to the Samaritan Shop. With nearly new outfits averaging 5 euros, it was definitely the chance to bag a bargain. Approximately 400€ was raised during the afternoon which will ensure that the organisation can continue to support their callers. The Trustees would like to extend their thanks to all volunteers who worked hard to make the afternoon a success and to the public for
supporting the event. The Samaritans in Spain offer a 24/7 free confidential service for anyone experiencing despair or distress and can be contacted on 902 88 35 35. The dropin centre is now open from 10.00hrs14.00hrs from Mon-Sat at their shop in the Punta Marina Commercial Centre.

...remember to say you saw it in the SOL TIMES
SOLTIMES MAY 2013 this stem from? Every single person with low self- esteem has been criticised by others. This usually begins with family members, and is carried on via friends, work colleagues, and partners, because the victim has believed what was said about them, and as a result has drawn the same criticising people into their lives. Ultimately the victim ends up carrying on this pattern themselves simply because the pattern of criticism has become familiar. Criticism destroys confidence. Persistent negative self-talk has to be overcome before self- esteem can be improved. It saddens me to hear that in this day and age where there is so much help available that a lot of people who are in this position, ‘Just get on with it’. Whatever ‘it’ is. This Victorian way of thinking can cause more distress than the initial problem. We still seem to live in the age of the very British ‘stiff upper lip’, especially where conditions like anxiety, depression, addictive behaviours or confidence issues are concerned. Or indeed, any condition connected with the mind. Just as negative talk can destroy a person, constructive talk builds a person back up again. EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique), is an extremely constructive tool in enabling a person to recognise that they do indeed have value and are worthy. It can help build selfconfidence. It does this by working with your sub-conscious mind to reverse the limiting beliefs that you have held onto, that have been imposed upon you by others. By working with EFT you can recover and build upon the selfesteem you were born with. It’s still inside you, even if it has been supressed. You can re-contact with the self-esteem you were born with
by means of the right tools. EFT provides these tools. No-one is born with negative self-esteem. • EFT can remove old patterns and re-establish new ones • It is a method of healing • EFT is a way of actively training your mind and nervous system to adopt a different attitude to your problem and therefore overcome it • It is easy to use • And a highly effective treatment If you have concerns about your self-confidence, self-worth and selfesteem, then we need to talk. You deserve to live your best life! Your mind is your most valuable tool. So what is it then that stops people seeking help? Maybe it is connected with the totally incorrect assumption that to seek help is a sign of weakness. On the contrary, to seek professional help is a show of strength in that you have recognised there is a problem, issue or challenge (dependent on your choice of definition) and that you have the inner strength to do something about it. And with today’s technology you do not even have to leave the comfort of your home to utilise the help that is available to you. This also saves you any possible embarrassment of being seen by a neighbour, friend or relative as you go into a therapist’s office or treatment room. How then does this work? By utilising a computer and a program that is downloadable free of charge called Skype. For those of you not familiar with Skype we can have a ‘virtual meeting’. That is we can both see each other and converse with each other in real time. Indeed this is becoming more and more the preferred method of receiving help where matters of the mind are concerned. Does this detract from an actual
‘one to one session’ in any way? Not at all, because you are actually receiving a one to one session, the difference being that you are not in the same room or indeed building. (I can even go as far as to say not in the same country, I have worked with clients not only in Spain but also in the UK, USA and Caribbean using this method of contact). Does the client receive the same benefits? Yes the client does, perhaps even more so in that the client is usually in familiar surroundings. This often helps with their confidence. How do I arrange a session via Skype? Initially telephone contact is made by a potential client and a Skype appointment is discussed and arranged. Alternatively an email can be sent and an appointment can be arranged using email. Or, if you email a contact number then we can chat over the telephone prior to your first Skype session. Please note if you do not have Skype on your computer it can easily be installed and I can always email you a link or talk you through the process of downloading it. It is simple to do.

Are you your own worst enemy? People talk to themselves every single day. This self-talk can benefit you or it can destroy you. Do you beat your- self up on a regular with your negative self-talk? Whatever YOU say about YOU is registered by your deeper mind (sub-conscious) and your deeper mind is responsible for the way you feel. It’s impossible to have negative beliefs about the self and to feel confident. The way you feel affects your whole body and is seen by others as the way you look, the way you stand and the way you speak. If you have been continually beating your-self up with constant negative self-talk, then it is most likely that you have low self-esteem and a low self-worth and a distinct lack of confidence. LOOK GOOD, FEEL GREAT
World War II FOOD ADVICE could be the key to improving diets today
It is 70 years since the Ministry of Food’s leaflets taught Britons to eat well on rations and stay ‘fit for the fight’ during the Second World War. But much of the long-forgotten dietary advice still stands and, says a leading nutritionist, could help improve our diet today. A new book, Eating For Victory, reproduces the leaflets distributed along with posters in the 1940s. Here is some of the advice as it was printed. It’s accompanied by wartime illustrations – with a modern interpretation of the old wisdom...
POTATOES There is no vegetable more useful than the homely potato. It is a valuable yet cheap source of energy, and one of the foods that help to protect us from ill-health. It contains Vitamin C and 1lb of potatoes daily will give half the amount of this vitamin needed to prevent against fatigue and fight infection. So don’t think of potatoes merely as something to serve with the meat. A stuffed baked potato can be a course in itself. Bridget Benelam, a scientist at the British Nutrition Foundation, says: ‘A medium-sized baked potato, with skin, provides a third of the recommended daily amount (RDA) of Vitamin C – twice that of an apple. It will also provide half the RDA of potassium – important for blood pressure and water balance – iron, zinc and B vitamins.’
CHEESE Cheese is an A1 food because it is an excellent body-builder, better than meat for building firm muscles. It builds strong bones and teeth, too. Therefore, it is invaluable for growing children. Plenty of cheese in childhood means less dental trouble in later life. It is a concentrated energy-giving food, especially suitable for heavy workers as it gives a large amount of energy in small bulk. It contains a high proportion of fat and so gives a feeling of satisfaction after a meal. Bridget says: ‘A matchbox-sized serving, 30g, of cheese provides a quarter of our daily calcium needs – crucial for maintaining bone density – although milk or yogurt might be better choices as they are lower in fat. Cheese is as good a source of protein as meat but generally contains more fat, so should be eaten less.’
HERRINGS ‘Of all the fish that swim in the sea,’ runs the old saying, ‘the herring is the king.’ Consider the herring’s food value. It is a very cheap source of the best body-building protein. Herring oil not only supplies an extraordinarily high number of calories and energy-giving units, but it also contains two vitamins, A and D. Vitamin A strengthens resistance to disease and Vitamin D is essential for bones and teeth.
kim clark benefits consultancy Do you suffer from mobility problems, breathlessness/pain or falls/stumbles?
Bridget says: ‘This is still true – herrings are an excellent source of fish oil. Research since the 1940s has shown the omega 3 in oily fish is important for good heart and brain health. We should eat two portions of fish a week, one oily. Nowadays other types of fish are readily available, such as tuna.’
DRIED EGGS Dried egg is pure fresh egg with no additions, and nothing but the moisture taken away. It is pure egg, spray-dried. Eggs contain firstclass body-building material. They also help us to resist colds and other infection because of their high protective properties. They are easily digested, and for this reason are especially good for children and invalids. Bridget says: ‘Transporting food is easy now so we generally eat only fresh eggs. Two medium eggs provide your entire RDA of B12, important for blood and brain function, and 60 per cent of our Vitamin D requirement. They are also high in protein.’

GREEN VEGETABLES When fresh fruit is short, we need green vegetables more than ever because they all contain the important fresh-fruit vitamin, Vitamin C. Some have more than others. Brussels sprouts, parsley and watercress all contain more than oranges. For healthy eating, plan to have a green leafy vegetable at least once every day. Bridget says: ‘This all holds true – vegetables can have just as much Vitamin C as fruit. In fact, a pepper contains double the Vitamin C of an orange and will provide your entire daily requirement. Dark green leaves are an important source of antioxidants, which protect cells from a host of diseases from cancer to age-related sight loss.’ read the full article at www.dailymail.co.uk

STREET PARTY
One of the biggest problems within communities here in Spain is bringing residents of differing languages together so they can better understand eachother. Invariably those nationalities with the largest number of residents take control, and the result is often growing mistrust among minorities that decisions are being taken without knowledge or approval. One community which is trying to break down the barriers is in Playa Flamenca, Orihuela Costa, which has organised a series of street parties, which are proving
very popular, bringing nibbles and bottles of drinks to share. The majority are English speaking, but it has brought along other nationalisities too - Spanish, Bengian, Norwegian, Austrian and Dutch. “The first street party was attended by more than 30 people and it surprised us how many said they had barely spoken to people before, maybe just saying hello, and were pleased they had enlarged their circle of friends,” said president Barry Dutton.

Q: P lease explain the situations in which a resident qualifies for non-payment of capital gains tax.
A . The first thing is to be able to prove to the notary the day of the sale that you are in fact a Spanish tax resident. It is very important to realize that having what everyone calls the “residencia” issued by the police does not in fact prove you are a tax resident of Spain , and that if this is the only document you take to the notary to prove tax residency , the notary will consider you a non resident and you will be subject to a 3% retention. To prove you are a tax resident your solicitor needs to request a certificate from the tax authorities, which can then be taken to the notary. If you suffer the nasty surprise of them saying that in fact you are a non resident, you will need to get this amended by proving to them that you are in fact a resident before they will issue you with the correct certificate for the notary. The best way to secure tax residency status is making a resident income tax declaration in Spain in June of every year. If you are going to sell shortly, request this certificate in advance to avoid last minute surprises. 1. The possible total or partial exemption from capital gains tax due to reinvestment (roll-over ): If you are a resident and sell one property to purchase another of the same or higher price you can claim 100% exemption from capital gains tax. To benefit you have to have been a resident for at least 3 year before the sale takes place, and you must purchase the next property within 2 years of the sale. If you are moving to a smaller property, you can claim exemption of a percentage of the capital gains tax. 2. Claim of total exemption if you are over 65 years old: If you are over 65 and sell your main home (where you must have lived for at least 3 years as a resident), you can claim 100% exemption from capital gains tax even if you do not reinvest. If the property is owned by a couple and one member is over 65 and the other is not, you are allowed to claim the exemption in respect to half the price.

SOLTIMES MAY 2013
Saturday June 8th (11 to 3pm) will be the first ARTS AND CRAFTS FAYRE to be organised by the ARTISAN CO-OPERATIVE. The event will be held at the GOLF CLUB HOUSE on SECTOR C Camposol and for this 1st EVENT the Charity organisation AGE CONCERN Costa Calida will also benefit. The Door charge is €1 and this will be donated to Age concern who on the day will also run a raffle & be on hand to explain about their charity and all the services they offer & the events they organise. We hope that at subsequent events other local charities & organisations will help host the event. The idea for a totally ARTS & CRAFT based event came from the organiser Matt Jones (ARTIST, CERAMACIST & probably BETTER KNOWN TO MOST PEOPLE AS ONE HALF OF RAINBOW SATELLITES! ) Having attended many fiestas and charity events displaying and selling his own artwork he wanted to try and get off the ground a small (but growing steadily) group of likeminded creative people who work in a whole host of materials & crafts including PAPER.... FABRIC QUILTING & SEWING.... MOSAICS.... STAINED GLASS ....PAINTING...CARD MAKING...METAL WORK.... CERAMICS... DECORATED SPANISH ROOF TILES.....JEWELLERY MAKING....HOME BAKING....KNITTING AND WOOD WORK with the main emphasis on things being handmade and designed by the plethora of talented people in the MURCIA region ................So the idea of creating ARTISAN CO-OPERATIVE was born and a chance to get together in one venue and champion the cause of HAND MADE & UNIQUE items that are lovely things to have around your home or make special gifts for family, friends or just to treat yourself because you deserve it! On JUNE 8TH some of the ARTISTS will be giving demonstrations of their craft or explaining the process behind creating the superb things they make & attending this first event will be COLIN from Mula with his colourful symphony Stained Glass. He brings some of his fantastic lamps ,light catchers and intricate glass panels check out www.diassoleados.com , MARY who’s TEJAS Decorative / Spanish inspired decorated roof tiles that look lovely hung in a shady terrace they have so much detail and colour - have a look at her face book page : Hand Crafted Spanish wall hangings . Also look out for rustic pottery from MALS – www.rusticpottery.wordpress.com - Studio in Aledo & LINDA from Los Canovas with their colourful ceramics, DAN RUST from La Magdelana will also be at the event with his MOSAICS www.mosaicman.eu plus Christine with her HANDMADE CARDS www.chris4cards.com as well as a host of other imaginative folks with lovely STITCHED & EMBROIDERED FABRIC ITEMS Such as Lavender bags/ fabric door stops & a varied selection of Jewellery to suit every taste & style............. We also have Creative Kids corner where budding young artists up to age 10 can have a go at various ARTY PROJECTS & FIESTA FACES will be there face painting TIGERS, MONSTERS & CLOWNS as well as any other requests. THE CLUB HOUSE on sector C Camposol offer a good selection of refreshments and food so why not come along and support the ARTS & CRAFTS FAYRE, chat with the artists as well as supporting the good work of AGE CONCERN Costa Calida & enjoy a nice time out too. *If you hand make or craft lovely things we want to hear from you!! We may have a few tables available for this event but if you are interested in participating in future events & joining our artisan co-operative then email Matt with details of your craft. Also if you just enjoy looking & hopefully buying hand made crafts want to know about future planned ARTS & CRAFTS get in touch. Matt will be at the event with some of his art & ceramics for sale his website is www.loftart.org HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL THERE ENJOYING THE DAY...

soccer school
On Saturday, May 18th at 11:00 exactly was the day. The third game of the soccer school. After two matches won the confidence was really big. But the Hacienda was well prepared and had a good start. The 0-1 was therefore the logical next step. A beautiful goal from the striker. After that the soccer school got some possibilities. George and Louis were close by scoring a goal. But again and again it was that good goalkeeper who intervened. Just before half time the Hacienda makes 0-2.In the second half it went better for the soccer school and they got more grip on the game. But the Hacienda remained dangerous on the counter. Lorena had to rescue a few times. And actually out of nowhere came the 0-3. A shot that changed of direction went just into the goal. From that moment it was all or nothing. Now it was Jaime and Vicente who were very close with scoring a goal. And totally out of the blue a great kick from Lorena and the ball went over everybody and came just before the feet of George. He could walk straight to the goal and stayed cool makes a beautiful goal. All in all a good game and........ oh yes sometimes you win and sometimes you lose that is the way it is. For the summer the soccer school offer extra training days. The soccer school fun days have been three years a great success. And everyone is welcome. The first days will be on JUNE:25,26& 27 from10:30 till 13:00and then JULY: 12, 13& 14 from 10:30 till 13:00 AUG: 2, 3 & 4 from 10:30till 13:00 AUG: 23, 24& 25 from10:30 till 13:00 For more information:jelcooosterhof@hotmail.com or give us a call (0034) 653120633

We are now in a position to offer Expats our services due to a new product launch which allows a much larger tax free lump sum for any purpose regardless of age. We understand that times are tough in the UK and overseas, and that people need cash NOW to sort out their personal lives. We are told every time we speak to clients “I would rather have my money now rather than wait until I retire” we completely sympathize and understand your feelings. We now have several options to help our clients release money NOW from the pension fund. It is a very simple process and takes only a short time to release your cash.

lions & dutch club
On May 1st there were great celebrations in honour of the crowning of the New Dutch King Willem Alexander, the “Dutch Club” held a market and social event at Mariano’s restaurant on Camposol A. This event was well supported and the various activities raised a fantastic €538 which was donated to Lions Club of Mazarron to be further donated to the appeal in Bolnuevo for the disabled young Boy to pay for his Physiotherapy sessions. The Lions are most grateful for this kind gesture, providing much needed resources to help us continue with our aim of helping those in need where ever they may be. The attached picture is of
just a few of the “Dutch Club” at their event. Once again thank you all for helping The Lions. Many thanks to Heleen Sonneveld for the translation

Help Mar Menor Quiz
HELP MURCIA MAR MENOR held a Quiz with a Difference on 14th May at the El Carmoli restaurant in El Carmoli, the difference being that it is very hard! Over 50 people attended, lured no doubt by the chicken and chips on offer. The first prize was won by Bernard Ash’s team. The booby prize was a cake shaped like a pair of boobies, made by Janice Clark. This was won by Clive and Jilly’s team, who won it the last time. There is a suspicion that Clive lost on purpose so that he could get his hands on the boobies. €392 was raised for the charity from the enjoyable event. Our next event is an Afternoon at the Races at Viva Bar and Restaurant overlooking the sea in Los Nietos on Thursday 13th June. We meet at 1 for 1.30 p.m. for lunch followed by the racing. Tickets at €7.50 can be obtained by ringing Joan Mitchell on 868 185 685, Janice Clark on 968 134 355 or HELP MMM office on 968 570 059.

The Lions are most grateful to Oscar from Oscar’s Bar for allowing us to use the front of his premises for the weekly sale, and the help we receive from all staff. Oscar was invited to make the draw and the winner was ticket number 29, Mrs Sue Arnold. Pictured on the left, are Oscar and Lion Diane Little, the Lion in charge of this draw. The picture on the right is the lucky winner Mrs Sue Arnold with Lion Diane, collecting her prize. We would like to also thank all at TJ Electrics (Euronic’s) for showcasing the prize during the raffle, donating a case, organising the guarantee along with offers to help with the set up routine to the winner.

Searching high and low....
There are literally hundreds of search engines on the internet. However, there is only one that you will ever need....Google. Google is a crawler-based engine, meaning that it has software designed to “crawl” the information on the Internet and add it to its database. Google has the best reputation for relevant and thorough search results. Google’s home page is clean and simple. There is more than one option on Google’s home page. You can search for web sites, images, comments in discussion groups, news, shopping sites, maps and lots more... Web - The default search engine. Images - Searches for images, maps, graphics, photos, or drawings. Video - Searches for short video files on the Internet. News - Searches for information gathered from thousands of news sources worldwide. Maps - An interactive map tool featuring driving directions. More - Additional search tools including: Books - If you’re looking for text from a specific book, type in the name of the book (in quotes), or if you’re looking for books about a particular subject, type in “books about xxx”. Groups - Searches for information, opinions, and recommendations from user groups. Even more - dozens of additional search tools, we’ve only just scratched the surface here! “I’m Feeling Lucky” - This button takes you instantly to the first search result returned for any query. For instance, if I type in peanut butter I go straight to peanutbutterlovers.com. It’s basically a shortcut so you can bypass the search engine results page.
How to Google Search 1) Just enter a word, multiple words or a phrase and hit “enter”. Google will come up with results that contain all the words in the search bar. Google doesn’t care about
capitalized words and will even suggest correct spellings of words or phrases. Google excludes common words such as “where” and “how”, and since Google returns results that include all of the words you enter, there’s no need to include the word “and”, as in “milk and cookies”. You can enter milk cookies. 2) If you want to look for web sites that contain just “milk” or just “cookies” you can use “OR” as in milk or cookies. If you’re searching for the exact phrase you would enter “milk and cookies” including the quotes. 3) Try to be as specific as possible - instead of cars, try Ford Focus. 4) If you’re searching for a specific quote, type in “we shall fight them on the beaches”. Google will search for the entire phrase just how it appears in between the quotes. 5) Use common words, such as “and”, “not” and numbers ONLY if you want them included in the search. Google excludes them otherwise. If you want them included, use a phrase search by putting quotations around your search query, or include the common word by putting a space and a plus sign right in front of it. For example, if you are looking for the season five DVD of “The Sopranos”, type in “the sopranos dvd season 5”. If you need any more help using Google why don’t you just “Google” your query! Until next time, (when we talk about using iTunes) - keep clicking...

I was rummaging through the drawer the other day trying to find a battery for the remote control and two thoughts struck me. The first was how amazing it is that inanimate objects manage to burrow away in the most inaccessible corner of the deepest drawer you have and cunningly hide themselves from your search, not once, but every time you look for them. My second thought was, why on earth have we got a dog whistle? I’ve got nothing against dogs-or for that matter dog whistles-but the thing is, I’m allergic to them. I sneeze, snuffle and generally do allergy related things in their company. So, I couldn’t offer any explanation for being in possession of a dog whistle, except to say, it must have been a fantastic piece of advertising that persuaded either me or Helen to part with real money to buy a thing we could never use. Then that got me thinking about all those things we own that could never be satisfactorily explained away, even under fierce interrogation. I think everyone’s had those moments when we’ve been convinced that our lives would be so much better if we bought that amazing gadget that can both stone an olive and render your front wall! Why are we such easy prey? Why do we shuffle away from our television sets after the commercial break, muttering to ourselves like a demented Dalek, “I must buy it…I must buy it,” as we trundle towards the nearest shop with a determined expression in our eyes and a lust for… well for whatever we’ve just seen? Of course, if we knew the answer we’d all be high flying advertising executives, earning a fortune and laughing up our sleeves! Actually one of my most embarrassing shopping moments came after watching Top of the Pops and being persuaded that

I just had to buy that record. The next day after school I went to the record shop-small round things with a hole in the middle-and asked Graham is married to Helen and has the lady if she had “That Same Old a daughter, Alice. Feeling”, by Pickettywitch. “No love, He lives part of the year near Albox, “ she replied, “not for a long time!”. but works in Qatar, I bet that never happened to Tony teaching. If you wish Blackburn. to contact Graham regarding this Wait, I’ve had an idea. I’ve finally article email: found a use for it. I’m going home helenandg@yahoo. to do a Pickettywitch medley on my co.uk dog whistle. Now all I have to do is work out why I bought this Octopus food...

SOLTIMES MAY 2013
...FOOD NEWS...FOOD NEWS... Are cronuts the new cupcakes?
The cronut, which has already received interest from curious pastry chefs in Hong Kong, Melbourne, and Los Angeles, is made from thin layers of flaky croissant dough that are deep fried, rolled in rose sugar, and then filled with light Tahitian vanilla cream. Rose-flavored glaze thinly coats the top layer, which peels apart like those in a mille crepe cake; finally, crystallized rose petals add a garnish flourish. With a line 30-people deep before Dominique Ansel opened its doors this morning, it’s easy to see why the Manhattan bakery’s new invention, cronuts, are selling within an hour. The cronut half croissant, half donut - was quietly unveiled last Friday, with a small batch of 50. Three days later, when 200 had sold out by 9.30am, one angry and disappointed customer ‘flipped the finger’ at staff on his way out of the pâtisserie. ‘A lot of people ask me why we don’t just do more?’ the bakery’s owner and chef, Dominique Ansel, told reporters. ‘I’m a big fan of quality over quantity. . . It takes a lot to ensure all our other pastries are up to par with standards as well.’ The bakery, which opened in New York’s Soho in 2011, makes the cronut dough fresh daily in house, as well as the flavored sugars and vanilla ganache. ‘That’s why the batches are limited. Hopefully people will bear with us as we try to ramp up production,’ the chef explained. With such a swift reaction to the new pastry,
Mr Ansel has filed a trademark for the cronut, ‘just for our protection,’ he said. It took around ten recipes, and multiple time and temperature adjustments before Mr Ansel found ‘the trick’ to sheeting and frying the dough in grape-seed oil at one specific, and secret, temperature. For the month of May, Dominique Ansel bakery is selling a Rose Tahitian Vanilla cronut. In June, the store will launch a new flavor: Lemon Maple. And a new flavor every month after that. A quick quote from the Chef: ‘A few tips on how to eat the cronut. Please cut (if you must) with a serrated knife to avoid crushing the layers. Do not eat the next day, eat immediately (they have a six hour shelf life) and will get stale in the fridge. Finally, try peeling off the layers one by one like a mille crepe cake.’ WHAT DOES A CRONUT TASTE LIKE?
‘Flakey but chewy, a little heavier than a croissant but fluffier than a donut’ ‘The soft crunch was followed by an injection of cream and a whiff of a rose garden – thanks to the floral-infused icing. The perfect breakfast sandwich!’ ‘There’s an element of the éclair about it, with the vanilla cream inside, which isn’t too sweet, allowing the rose icing to provide the sugar hit alone. They are insanely addictive – mine disappeared in microseconds. I could have devoured the box.’ Let’s hope they arrive sometime soon in Spain...

Question: How many people does it take to change a motorcar tyre? Answer: 8 – Jos, Pete, Greg, Chris, Lauren, Wayne, Gerald, and most of all, Andy! Here’s why: Pete’s niece, Chris, her husband Greg and their daughter Lauren were here for a flying visit. In the cold grey Limaria dusk, on the evening previous to their departure in the cold grey light of the next Limaria dawn, I noticed that their hire car had 3 round tyres and one which was round on top and flat at the bottom. Action had to be taken and the wheel had to be changed, and changed now –the situation was not going to magically right itself overnight. Greg, as Alpha Male, was called. He rose unsteadily from his sick bed, (he had the dreaded tummy virus) and promptly sank back again, going a greener shade of pale as he did so. I hold that Woman was not put on this earth to change tyres, but on this occasion Woman had no option, so between us Chris and I wrangled the spare tyre out of its cubbyhole, while Lauren, who has the most recent experience of theoretical car josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk motor

maintenance, held things and offered encouragement. While I swore at the wheelnut covers, Chris attacked them with a screwdriver. They quickly recognised the futility of resistance and popped off. Pete, hearing the commotion and bad language, limped out from within the house and assumed command of his ersatz harem from his chair on the porch. ‘Put the spanner on the wheelnuts, then jump on it.’ He commanded, seeing me vainly struggling to dislodge them. That worked rather more quickly than I had expected! ‘Now get Gerald’s kneeler-upon, and Wayne’s plank.’ Pete commanded. ‘Why?’ ‘To prevent your knees and the jack from sinking into the gravel.’ Why hadn’t that dawned on me? Blessing Gerald for the millionth time for the gift of the kneeler-upon, I knelt upon it and carefully positioned Wayne’s plank under the jacking point. At this point the Biggs personal one man emergency service, AKA Andy, arrived on the scene, turned the plank through 90%, so that it was the right way round to support the jack, and took over the remainder of the task. We women were then free to revert to our proper role, that of offering encouragement and forming an admiring audience. With the co-operation of 8 people, either directly or indirectly, it is really not that difficult to change a tyre!
The Fat Little Cherub with the Bow and Arrow
Over the winter months we thought it would be a good idea to dig out all of those albums and boxes of photographs from under the stairs, and start to download them on to the computer. It was a daunting task when we realised just how much we had accumulated in our two lifetimes, not to mention the inherited ones from our parents’ days. Of course it was never going to be a quick job, with every other pic bringing back a happy memory, but then that’s why we take photographs in the first place. There were the usual amateurish efforts - a dandelion; next doors cat; my Dad’s shed; two bits of plastic I had glued together and hung from the washing line with cotton, which I passed off as a photograph of a flying saucer. All laughably uninspiring...all precious. Then there were the old flames who fell into two distinct categories. The “Mmmm” stack, and the, “I didn’t did I?” collection. And it got me
thinking back to the first time the little fat cherub with wings, shot a dart at me. I was 13 and the star paperboy at our newsagents. Well only as far as the proprietor was concerned. You see, I took the evening round that nobody else wanted. It was that part of the estate where even the SAS would think twice about entering and which was full of dogs, many with only three legs – a mystery I often pondered, but not one I really wanted to know the answer to. Friday was collection night, and it was daunting. At number 113 (I hesitate to name the actual street, in case they still lurk) a creature twice as wide as it was tall, would throw open the door – all string vest and chin stubble - and ask me what the ‘ell I wanted. I knew that’s what it was saying because it was a grunt with a question mark attached. Then trying not to be intimidated, I would whisper, “One pound, two and sixpence for your papers Mrs Roper”. Then there was number 666 - but that is a whole new other story and one that is best left untold... It was on my morning round - a better part of the estate where the gates were still on

their hinges and the postman had kept the use of his legs that I first saw HER. SHE was everything a young boy could want in a girl...female and with a pulse..andd she rode a new Raleigh bicycle. Sigh.... She was a papergirl for a rival newsagent, and the happiest moment of my young life was when, after several weeks I summoned up the courage to talk to her and say hello, and oh joy, received a hello right back. Obviously she fancied me! After helloing for a month or two, I decided to take it to the next level and asked her name. Glenda she said, and to me there was never a more perfect name for an angel. I detected a bit of reticence on her part, but I put this down to shyness as I was now convinced she had the hots for me too - we had exchanged names. It was me who always had to seek her out for our morning exchange, but I figured this must be what was meant by playing hard to get and all part of the unfamiliar game of love. But that was cool, I knew deep down how she really felt. Then the morning arrived when my goddess did a swallow dive off the pedestal on which I had placed her and kicked me in the crotch – quite an acrobatic feat. It was a Saturday and known thereafter as Humiliation Day.
I found her at the door of 44 Landrake Crescent where she was collecting money. She saw me at the gate and there was a muttered exchange between her and the female customer. I couldn’t make out what was being said, but the lady glared and without taking the ciggie out of her mouth, said to Glenda in a loud voice, ‘Why don’t you just tell him to sling his bleedin’ hook love’. If the road had opened up in front of me to reveal a set of stairs, I would have taken them three at a time. In one telling sentence, it all became clear to me. My education had begun. Unable to speak; my face the colour of a whore’s hat and burning fit to ignite, I pedalled off as fast as my skinny legs could take me. Unrequited love - bitter sweet. But if by the slimmest of chances you ever get to read this Glenda . . . just look what you missed!

When Alqueria shook off the yoke of Spanish colonialism, actually they were asked to leave Spain’s sphere of influence then certain things were neglected. Civil laws which have proved impossible to reintroduce and all the pomp, ridiculous ceremony and meaningless protocol which certain countries seem to wallow in. In terms of things ridiculous Alqueria didn’t want to be outdone. With presidential elections looming it seemed the perfect time to set about these adornments of statehood. Several ideas were mooted, including inane over-medalled uniforms for the yet to be Alquerian Defence Force and incomprehensible etiquette to surround the Head of State. None however seemed to fit the collective anarchic soul of the Alquerian people. After much deliberation and countless ideas a public holiday was decided upon, The Día del Soplagaitas. Some of these ideas are worthy of note. Poyato wanted to award the Order of Remitroot to worthy citizens while Rodriquez wanted to award himself a knighthood, pension and certain rights regarding the young ladies of the Pueblo. Manuela’s idea in particular had merit but was unfortunately physically impossible to all but the most well built of men. The Día del Soplagaitas was to take place on the first day of Presidential campaigning and was designed to unite the inhabitants of the village. We are however talking about Alqueria. Foreign dignitaries were invited but none came. The international press were invited but only ‘Tiles and Tiling Monthly’ turned up. The very best of Alqueria would be on show and prospective candidates could give their policies an airing. However nothing in life is certain and in Alqueria this applies even more. The Day degenerated into a battle between the barrios. A serious and important debate concerning Alqueria’s antiquated drainage system was settled with an arm wrestling competition while a discussion embracing women’s rights led to the ladies’ sewing circle looting ‘La Lana Tienda de Betania’ The health service in the form of Dr. Enzo Matanzamas for the eastern barrio and Dr. Cortaduras the western had major differences. The question of private versus state healthcare led to a Remitroot drinking contest which left both medical men comatose in the gutter. The election was forgotten as the streets became battle grounds for the rebellious and idealistic. The village police officer, José Cabrasilbido hid in his wardrobe as anything portable was thrown and anything combustible ignited. These events didn’t bode well for the forthcoming elections no matter how predictable they were. The Día del Soplagaitas far from uniting Alqueria had driven the divide deeper. Who would have the courage to run for president will become apparent when the candidates’ deposits are lodged. Who will be the frontrunners? Who will hold the balance of power? We shall see...

MAZARRON F.C.
May 2013.
It must be said that when we arrived at the course, the weather looked okay but as the day got on, there were a gathering of black clouds and then all hell let loose just as the last 4 ball came home. “Drowned rats” doesn’t even start to explain what they looked like!
MAZARRON F.C. 2 CIUDAD DE MURCIA 1
CAP
Mazarron’s season is ending on a high with another hardworking team performance earning them a splendid 2-1 victory at home against promotion chasing CAP Ciudad de Murcia. The biggest crowd of the season boosted by a large and enthusiastic following from Murcia enjoyed a close fought battle which was settled by two goals from Mazarron’s excellent striker Jose Ruben. The game opened quietly with both sides struggling to gain supremacy but Mazarron’s juvenile goalkeeper Ruben, again deputising for Jose Iker, had to be at his best to foil the dangerous Murcian strike force. Mazarron took the lead after 22 minutes when Jose Ruben reacted first to a splendid cross from the left and turned the ball into the net for his fifteenth goal of the season. At the other end, young Ruben was again called into action with a brave double save to thwart the onrushing Ciudad de Murcia forward. The first half ended with Ciudad de Murcia on the attack and, first captain Diego and then Ruben again, had to be at their best, Diego clearing off the line and Ruben blocking a shot from close range. The second half started in similar fashion and Ciudad de Murcia equalised after 50 minutes when Ruben was only able to push out a cross from the right and the ball fell to Mario who coolly lobbed it back into the roof of the net. At this stage Mazarron were defending resolutely and only
occasionally able to mount an attack on the Murcia goal apart from a speculative shot from 25 yards from substitute Toni which went over the bar. On 70 minutes a mishit shot deceived Ruben and the ball evaded his grasp and rolled slowly towards the goal line but he recovered quickly to grab it just in time. Toni hit a fierce drive just outside the post before Murcia thought they had equalised after 78 minutes following an excellent move but the goal was disallowed for offside. However, Mazarron scored what turned out to be the winning goal on 85 minutes when Alfonso’s through ball saw Jose Ruben once again racing clear of the Murcia defence before chipping over the keeper’s head and running the ball into the empty net. It was Ruben’s 16th goal of the season and he is now the second highest goalscorer in the league. Two minutes later an excellent move between Ruben and Barrachina ended in a cross to the far post and substitute Matt Clarke’s shot was just deflected for a corner. Mazarron had to work hard to complete the double over Ciudad de Murcia and the difference between the two teams was once again Jose Ruben who also scored both goals in Mazarron’s victory at Murcia back in January. Team: Ruben, Barrachina, Diego, Chicho (Clemente), Perico, Jose Da, Diego (Matt Clarke), Alfonso, Santi (Pollo), Jose Ruben, Cecilio (Toni) Man of the Match: R u b e n (goalkeeper)
El Plantio 2 GolfSecond Society The Society held a Texas place was Scramble this week with teams of 4 players each. As you would expect from this format there were some excellent scores with most members being disappointed if all they got was a Par on a hole. El Plantio golf course is starting to look real good now and with the weather warming up the final scores were a reflection of a pleasant days golf. The results this week: Nearest the pin: hole 1 Frank Stanhope hole 5 Ian Henderson In third place was Ian Henderson, William Murphy Keith Smith & John O’Brien with 47.64 pts
Kenny Reddington, Elsa Webster Ray Housely & John Spencer with 45.92 pts First Roger Marshall, Gordon Abba, George Stanhope & Frank Stanhope with 45.66 pts Next Tuesday 21st May is another team competition, this will be a Greensome, be here 9:00 for 9:30am Tee off Visitors are welcome. I think by now, most people know how to get to the course and know to avoid the Benidorm Toll Road…well, all except our intrepid Handicap Secretary (John Haggart) and his good lady wife (Paula). I am willing to bet that the inside of their car turned a very nice shade of blue and even when a civil question to Paula was asked “How did you enjoy Madrid?” – her response was not very lady like…in fact even a sailor would have been embarrassed at the language that flowed forth. Anyway back to the golf. It is fair to say that the fairways were in quite good condition and in need of a trimming for the ball had no roll to it at all, the grass just grabbed (got to be careful how I phrase this next bit!!) your (Golf) balls where they landed. The greens weren’t too bad considering they had been hollow tined in the last couple of weeks and I think, by enlarge, an enjoyable game of golf was enjoyed even though only one person bettered their handicap and by quite some margin too. Scores on the doors were moderate and it only needed 32 points for Captain Mick Kennedy
sport
to be pushed back into 3rd place by a better Back Nine of Ray Ewins and one point ahead of them both was Mr “No more Belly Putter” Colin Marsden who took the honours in the Silver Division with 33 points. The Gold Division scores were very similar to those of the Silver crew and 33 points and losing out on the Count Back was Alan Rickers who was pushed into 3rd place by the Flying Dutchie, Theo Boelhouwer who secured 2nd spot with 33 points and a better back nine than Alan. This left the winners slot for John Eyre who came home with quite a magnificent score of 41 points and the look of glee on the Handicap Secretaries face was a picture. Sweeny Todd has got nothing on this boy when he sees he will be cutting handicaps. The NTP’s were kindly donated by Tom Jones and Pearl Sabine and were won by Bill Wylie, Mike Fearnehough and Peter Wells. This weekend in the Municipal Pool “Esperanza Lag”,Elche the swimming Club, “Elche Club Natacion” hosted the 19th Natacional Trophy “Memorial Pascual Roman”. The event was open to all Spanish swimming clubs and clubs from all over the country entered the two day event on the 18th and 19th May. Competition was fierce and swimmers from “Club Natacion Torrevieja” were up against strong competition from some of the best clubs in Spain. The team worked hard over the weekend and swimmers attained many new personal bests. Younger swimmers Densel Fusha and Victoria Pigneur took seconds off their previous PB’s in the Benjamin 50m breaststroke, Bastian Martinez, Amy Connolly and Victoria Pigneur in their Benjamin 50m Backstroke. Artem Nikolaev, Serger Bous and Samira Lucumbi improved times in the Benjamin 50m Freestyle and Samira in her 50m Butterfly. In the older aged categories Nikita Mykaylov, Elian Rio del Castillo, Eva Kovalenko and Alexandra Amat earnt new PB’s in their two races and Louise and Ruth Brassington in their events. SAMM (Sailing ssociation Mar Menor) Stamina needed, particularly for the smaller boats, for the round the island race which would concentrate the efforts for a couple of hours at least.
Seven boats with 17 helms and crew crossed the start line in south, south westerly winds which would get a little tricky. It wasn’t long before the Deltania radioed its intention to retire from the race, the crew’s comments regarding the ability of the boat less than favourable. No other boat had to retire, but Mistral was suffering some rudder problems resulting in a last place at the end of the race. Tony Jones in the Martin, the boat for the disabled sailor, identified shifting winds which at one point died before gusting and making the water very choppy, adding to the need to dig deep into the skills department. The Hartley was back on the water with the same helm and crew that had capsized only two weeks ago. No such trauma this time and Don Clarke, with crew, Lynda Coats put in a redeeming 2nd place. First over the finish

LAS RAMBLAS hosts SMGS As our turn came around to visit Las Ramblas, one of the dozen or so courses on San Miguel Golf Society’s circuit, the weather had certainly settled into pre-summer mode. Clear skies and sunsoaked fairways were starting to become the daily norm’. The Wednesday morning displayed no change in pattern and the general talk of rain being on the way was more or less laughed off by all present after casting the odd expert glance over the bright blue sky…..”Not a chance – what do they know anyway?” was the general gist. Well, it transpired they knew a lot more than us regarding the impending “cracker” of a storm which brought an early darkness to the region about 6.30 followed by gallons of rain and quite an impressive lightning show…..at least it did, I’m pleased to say, have the decency to wait until our golf was well and truly finished.
Zoe Connolly won 3rd place and bronze medal in her Alevin 100m Backstroke with new PB 1:20:28, missing out on a National qualifying time by half a second. She then went on to win 2nd place and silver medal in her 100m Breastroke event. This was quickly followed with the girls Alevin 4 x 100m medley relay. With Zoe swimming Backstroke, Samira Breastroke, Eva Butterfly and Alexandra Freestyle the girls worked exceptionally hard and won 4th place just missing out on the bronze medal position. Well done to all!! A hard two days competition.
line in the Shoestring Tres, the Laser 2000, with Tug Wilson helming and Vernon O’Byrne crewing, had to settle for 3rd place when the handicaps were applied.
The course was in a particularly well-groomed state with excellent fairways and greens and those lucky enough to hit the fairways were well rewarded with the run which came as quite a bonus with most of the tee boxes being positioned well back. The day’s format was the always popular 2 ball, better ball and all the prevailing conditions pointed to good scores taking the day’s spoils. NTP’s on holes 6, 10, 12 & 14 were won respectively by Stanley
Matthews, Barry Roehrig, Alan MacDonald and Hayden Williams, who it’s nice to see back after a recent absence of a few months. The 2nd and 3rd pairs had to be separated with their 44’s needing a count-back decision. Steve Fleet & John Osborne just lost out and had to be content with 3rd spot leaving the other 44 from John Trehay & Arne Hanson with 2nd place. Ben Price partnering Eric Strachan must have had a near perfect dove-tailing round ending up a further 5 points clear with an astounding 49 points leaving them as the runaway winners on the day. Rumour has it than Peter and Ann Reed, residents on Las Ramblas, made a concerted effort for the Abacus Trophy as they were staying in for a romantic dinner for two…..and had forgotten to pick up a bottle of Rioja! Well done to all the prizewinners. Don’t forget to visit www.smgs.org or give Baz a buzz on 966 731 033 to find out all about the society and details of forthcoming events plus the location of our Wednesday meetings. Visitors are always made very welcome. Photo: Some of the day’s happy winners.

La Marquesa Press Report. 88 players took part in our Captain’s Day celebration and our Captain made it a day to remember. The forecast was not great and we had thunder storms the night before. However I am please to say that only a few of the late players got a bit wet, although it came down in torrents during the presentation. May I take this opportunity to thank all our sponsors, who are too many to mention, for their continued support. Although it was a slow round, there was lots of entertainment on the way. Phyllis, our Captain’s wife and her 3 sisters in situ on the 9th all dressed to kill as ‘Al’s Girls ‘. (well done girls for being so well turned out and spooky how all 4 girls look like each other ( their poor mother kept trying for a good girl!)). Our 4 ball was also amused to see one of our male players having a brilliant shot on the 15th (not) barely reaching past the steps up to the tee box (you know who you are Pat). What with buggies rolling away into bunkers balls bouncing down the paths it was an entertaining day. Thanks to our captain Alan for all his efforts into providing all the members an enjoyable day. Apart from the prizes mentioned below there was also a card draw which meant if you stayed for the presentation you won a prize. Well done Alan and many thanks.
