International Day Against Breast Cancer More than 96,000 women were called for testing in the mammography program of 2011-2012, and figures released for that period show that a total of 308 cases were diagnosed in the 4,814 women who took the test in the Región de Murcia’s 884 mammography units. Between 2011 and 2012 a total of 96,715 women between 50 and 69 yearsparticipated in the campaign against breast cancer, and had a mammogram. According to the Administración Regional, through the Día Contra el Cáncer de Mama, the Consejería de Sanidad y Política Social, in the year 2011-2012 a total of 138,033 women were called for mammograms, and 96,715, or 70.1 percenttook up the invitation. This is a slightly higher figure than the previous year when the take-up was 68.62 percent. The program for breast cancer prevention and early detection allows the preclinical

La ‘Bombonera’ reopens

After an investment of 500,000 euros, given by the Obra Social La Caixa and the Ayuntamiento to repair the earthquake damage, the Teatro Guerra has opened with a performance by the CompañíaNacional de Danza of ‘Raymonda’, with choreography by the ‘cartagenero’ José Carlos Martínez, from the original by Marius Petipa and based on the version danced by Rudolf Nureyev . The Teatro Guerra, known affectionately as the Bombonera, (chocolate box) because of the extravagance of its interior decoration, where the Elizabethan era, Italianate classicism and other eclectic elements come together in a highly ornamental style, is the oldest theatre in the region. José Carlos Martínez, Director Artístico de la CompañíaNacional de Danzadedicated the performance to the Russian choreographer and dancer Maya Plisetskaya , who performed in the last re-opening of the Teatro Guerra in 1989 and who also is the lead dancer of the Ballet Nacional de EspañaClásico. Doctor gives evidence

The third session of the crime of Patiño, in which Antonio G. is alleged to have killed his cousin after hitting him and strangling him, was one of the most dramatic, with relatives of the accused, among them his brother and his wife, three friends of the victim and the doctor who attended the deceased, giving evidence. The first to appear was the defendant’s brother, José.Before commencing his evidence he said that his only interest was in seeing his brother remain at liberty, adding that he was afraid of his cousin. In answer to questions from the prosecution he stated that on the afternoon in question he was in his garden shed painting. ‘Suddenly I heard: ‘ Dad, come running’. It was my daughter calling. I went to see what was happening and my sister told me that my brother had been beaten, then I saw my cousin lying on the floor and called 112.’ Curiously a second call was made to the emergency services: ‘There is a man passed out on the floor. He has fallen in his garden. His name is José Antonio Galvez.’ It was José’s wife who made the call. ‘When I saw my brother I asked him what had happened, but he did not react, just saying ‘He beat me.’ He added:‘I did not have a bad relationship with my cousin. He was the one who had a bad relationship with the family.’ At the end of his statementhe broke down in tears, saying that his brother ‘did not know any violent episode and that he has never been the same.’ Salvador and José Salvador González, brothers and friends of the victim, testified that ‘Jose Antonio was not drunk and was not violent.’ They recalled that on that day they ate together and at four in the afternoon, the victim went to the bar and took a carajillo and a glass of cognac. ‘I called Pepe (brother

of the accused) and he told me what had happened. When I reached the place I found my friend lying. I took him in my arms and he breathed his last. He had a lot of blood on his face.’ José Salvador said that he had never seen José Antonio get aggressive. The third friend of the victim to testify was Juan Antonio Liza , the owner of the bar where the deceased took his last coffee and his last drink. ‘He was in my bar and told me he was going to spray. Later, when I went to put the rubbish out, they said to me ‘They killed Guillamón.’ I went to the site and took his pulse, but he did not respond. There was blood on his face, ears and mouth.’ He added that on that day José Antonio was not drunk. María Teresa Sánchez, the doctor who attended the scene said that the right side of the victim’s face was totally destroyed, and he had a possible broken neck. The evidence of María, wife of the defendant, was the most anticipated. She declared ‘He could not speak, just pointed his finger and said ‘My cousin.’ She added that when she saw José Antonio he ‘had convulsions, shaking his leg and arm, which was when I called my brother.’ She said it she who insisted her husband change his clothes, but confirmed that he had not told the officers that his shirt had been washed ‘because he spent three days in jail with the garment he wore in the fight.’ She added: ‘I rolled up his pants shoes so that my kids would not see the blood, and put them in the closet. Antonio was very nervous and I was afraid to give him a heart attack.’

The European Court of Human Rights has condemned Spain over its continued detention of a convicted militant, and demanded her release. Ines del Rio, of the Basque separatist group Eta, is currently serving a 30-year prison sentence for her role in bomb attacks in the 1980s. The court upheld its earlier ruling that del Rio should be eligible for a sentence reduction for good behaviour. Spain says dozens of Eta prisoners could now be eligible for release. Del Rio was arrested in Zaragoza while driving a car packed with explosives intended for an Eta attack on the Costa del Sol. She was sentenced to more than 3,000 years in jail in 1987, most of which was for her role in a car bomb attack on a Guardia Civil police patrol in Madrid in 1986 which left 14 dead and 40 injured. Under the Spanish legal guidelines in place at the time of her conviction, Del Rio’s prison term was reduced to the maximum possible sentence - 30 years. Del Rio was due for early release in 2008 due to good behaviour, but her sentence was extended. But Spain changed the rules on remission in 2006 and decided to postpone Del Rio’s release until 2017. In rejecting an appeal by the Spanish

government, the European Court of Human Rights has upheld its 2012 ruling against Spain which opposed a legal practice known as the “Parot doctrine” - that allowed prison terms to be extended for people convicted of terrorist offences. Pressure on government The Court, based in Strasbourg, ruled that the prolonged detention of Ines Del Rio was a violation of two articles (5 and 7) of the European Convention on Human Rights, which cover the right to no punishment without law, and the right to liberty and security. In it judgment, the court said “it was incumbent on the Spanish authorities to ensure that she [Ines Del Rio] was released at the earliest possible date”. It also ordered the Spanish government to pay 30,000 euros (approximately $41,000, or £25,400) in compensation to Ms Del Rio. Although the Strasbourg court’s ruling only applied to Ms Del Rio, the Spanish government had said that dozens of other convicted Eta members could be eligible for release if it was upheld. Groups which represent the victims of terrorist attacks have called on the Spanish Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, not to comply with the ruling. “Compliance will betray victims of terrorism and all Spaniards,” said Voices Against Terrorism, in a statement www.bbc.co.uk

Dispute over cause of child’s death In the fifth session of the ongoing trial in the Provincial Court against Amelia Veronica UM and her partner, Juan Pedro MG, over the death of their daughter Lesley Estefania, the Fortuna girl who died in 2008, evidence was heard from the Fortuna outpatient staff, who maintain that they saw no signs of abuse in Lesley’s case.

An orthopedist says that the nerve injury that the child suffered was not caused by a tree falling on her leg, as the defendants maintain. The orthopedic surgeon who treated the injured leg for an infection resulting from a yeast infection, did not notice symptoms of abuse, but said he made ‘no exploration beyond the right lower extremity, which was the one that was damaged.’ The doctorwho was on duty the day the child attended the Urgenciasrecognised that the lesion was ‘neurological, which affected the sciatic nerve.’ ‘The injury’ he said, ‘did not correspond with a tree falling on the anterior tibia, as the family claimed,’ The family doctor and the two nurses from the Centro de Salud de Fortuna who had attended to the child on other occasions, all remember that the family had practiced ‘home cures’ but had not activated the usual

protocol to be taken in cases of abuse, because they could ‘find no reason to do so.’ Specifically, the family doctor who treated the girl on October 20, 2008 acknowledged that he personally filled in details of the lesion in the book of records as expected to heal. He said that ‘if it had been something more he would have proceeded differently.’ Adding that ‘if there was abuse, there is a protocol. If I did not write down anything else it is because nothing caught my attention.’ he said. The then Jefe de Policía Local said the morning when the child was found dead he was the first on the scene, even before the doctor. The latest accident saw a cyclist wounded in the leg after collidingwith a car accessing

Problem Feet

Did you know that the big toe is controlled by the lowest disc in the back? That’s why, in the old days, gout was often to be found in the big toe – the reason being, that something was not working correctly from the back (the spine). Approximately 90% of all problems with the feet are related to lower back problems. This is simply because the 5 tendons that hold the toes and metatarsals up, are all linked to the muscles at the back of the leg – the hamstrings and lateral and medial musculature of the leg. Treatments versus surgery From a chiropractor’s viewpoint, it seems crazy to have an operation on the foot to alleviate a symptom that is coming from the back…for example, putting a ‘lift’ or inner sole into a shoe, to try and improve or correct the pressure points, is not going to give a lasting relief. The reason the bottom of the foot (plantar faciitis ) is painful, is due to irritation coming from the lower back. Inversion and eversion injury: Many foot problems also come as a result of untreated inversion injury (when the foot leans out) – added pressure along the ‘little toe edge’, or when the foot leans in – eversion injury. So often these problems go untreated, causing the feet to gradually adapt over years, eventually creating their own version of ‘balance’ to hold the upper body. Bunions are a common product of this. Bunions are sometimes so bad, they require surgery. We can treat painful bunions, but it can depend on how bad the patient is. Sometimes, bunions are a result of old knee (or below the knee, on the inside) problems. In addition, medial knee problems can be caused by hip problems, either on the same or on the opposite side. It is all about keeping the body in proper alignment.

Double win for the Ford-Dunn brothers at Alicanteâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Spanish Supermoto round

Both the Ford-Dunn brothers were in dominant form at last weekends 4th round of the Spanish Supermoto championship held at Villena, Alicante. The British brothers who live in Murcia had been training hard over the summer to make sure they were in top form for the final rounds of the season, and it showed with both brothers qualifying in 2nd

position in their respective classes giving them a front row starting position for their races. Anthony was the first to race in the prestigious SM Open class and secured the overall win for the day by taking a win and two second positions from his three races, beating the reigning Spanish

champion Francesca Cucharera and former Spanish champion Israel Escalera. Anthonyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s last race was gripping as he fought through to 2nd position after a bad start that gave him enough points to take the overall victory. Next out was older brother Mat who was racing in the SM Master 35 class. Mat finished a close 2nd in his first race and knew that to take the overall win and maintain his championship lead then a win in the 2nd race was the only option. Before Mat had even lined up on the grid for the second race he was in trouble as the toll of racing in 30 degrees of heat on a rough track had given him chronic cramps in his arms and legs that made racing impossible. The start of the race was delayed slightly whilst mat was fed salt on the grid until the cramps subsided and racing could start. Once the race started Mat found himself in third position with some work to do to get to the front, but he did just that with an

outstanding effort that saw him dive down the inside of the leader to take the lead and the win on the last corner of the last lap. The 2-1 result gave him the overall win and both brothers stood on the top step of the podium at the end of the days racing. Team Sponsor Shane Stratton from Stratton Motorsports had flown in to watch the days racing and was delighted with the double victory and the possibility of clinching the SM Master championship at the forth coming Albaida race. With Mat now holding a 20 point lead in the SM Master 35 Spanish

Glasses that can translate a menu have been demonstrated by a major Japanese mobile operator. NTT Docomo’s wearable Intelligent Glasses can project an image of translated text over unfamiliar characters, the company said. The spectacles also allow the wearer to view and manipulate virtual images. The wearable technology was demonstrated at Ceatec 2013, a consumer electronics show in Japan. NTT Docomo said that Intelligent Glasses could be a boon to tourists. “Character recognition technology enables instant language translation for users travelling abroad and reading restaurant menus and other documents,” NTT Docomo said. Translated text The glasses, which are still at a research stage, can show translated text in a user’s first language, according to the company. The head-mounted display can translate Japanese, English, Chinese and Korean languages. Translation takes over five seconds for the prototype. The technology can also turn flat surfaces into pseudo-touchscreens, NTT Docomo said. A person can manipulate a virtual image in their field of vision using a ring that relays hand movements on the blank surface back to the glasses. The spectacles also use facial recognition software to display personal details of a person who is in view, the company added. The data is called up from remote servers using smartphones. Wearable tech Wearable technologies have “tremendous potential, but face a lot of hurdles”, IDC consumer technology consultant Jonathan Gaw told the BBC. “Small-bore applications like on-the-fly menu translation won’t sell a pair of smart glasses on their own, but a large eco system of applications might,” he said. Smart glasses face immediate issues of size, weight and battery life, Mr Gaw said. In the consumer world, fashion and social acceptability concerns also come into play, he added. Some of the major technology companies are in the process of developing wearable technology. For example, Google is developing head-mounted spectacles as part of the Google Glass project.

Expatriates in receipt of UK pensions and benefits may soon be contacted by the Department of Work & Pensions to confirm their international bank details. From 31st January 2014, the Department for Work and Pensions will need an International Bank Account Number (IBAN) and Bank Identification Code (BIC) in order to make payments to expatriates’ accounts in Spain and other Eurozone countries. This change is due to new European Union regulations which aim to make payments between EU countries faster and more secure. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) already holds IBAN and BIC details for most of its customers. But expatriates whose details are not yet held by the DWP will soon receive a letter asking for them. Bank customers will not be asked to provide any further details of their accounts, such as passwords. It is only the IBAN and BIC details that are needed If you receive a letter, you should complete the attached form and return it to the DWP as soon as possible, says the British Embassy in Madrid. Failure to do so may mean your payments will be stopped because after 31st January 2014, banks in Eurozone countries will not accept any DWP direct payments without these details. You can get the IBAN and BIC details from your bank account statement or directly from your bank. Expatriates only need to provide additional bank details if they receive payments into a Eurozone account outside the United Kingdom and have received a letter from the DWP. Those whose pension or benefit is paid into a UK account are unaffected by this change in EU regulations. Officials from the Department for Work and Pensions are also reminding customers who have changed address, and who have yet to inform the DWP, to contact the International Pension Centre in Newcastle-upon-Tyne on 0044 191 218 7777 in order to make sure their details are up to date. 5th Anniversary lunch

Billed as their Anniversary and farewell Dinner some 60 Freewheelers gathered in La Marina on Sunday the 13th for what was to be the teams last event for the time being. A victim of their own success the team have decided to sit back for a while and let those who have participated over the past five years organise an outing of their own through the team who will still be there to advise. The guys have spent a lot of their own time and money finding places to visit with great success and now feel they deserve a rest. The new idea being that all who are on the Freewheelers mailing list organise a day out in their own ares with lunch at their favourite restaurant. This may reduce numbers on the day but that makes it easier to manage in both finding a restaurant that can accommodate the group and cars on the road. If everybody on the mailing list did one, just one then there would be enough for the next seven years, so come on folks, HELP! & do it! Sundays outing was a pleasant drive through the countryside from La Marina to a new venue on the way to Crevillente driving via the scenic route and passing groves of pomegranate trees full of ripe fruit, past endless palm trees to our destination Los Molinos. After one of our previously favourite restaurant doubled its asking price by its new owners a new one had to be found very quickly as the date had already been set.. The new venue proved to be an outstanding choice by Richard who had spent much time finding a new location and then changing the route to cope with new roadworks that had sprung up overnight! Thanks Richard, great job. A very traditionally Spanish 3-course menu-del-dia with ribs, chicken or fish as the main, preceded by the plate-in-the-middle cheese & jamon, a second plate of fried whitefish and naturally the plate of salad. Complemented with wine and fruit & cream afterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all seemed to be well satisfied. Freewheelers Christmas Dinner is set for December 8th, so get it in your diary.

RAISING MONEY FOR THE AECC Recently Vivienne Shepherd took over the Quesada Studio and Boxing gym (under the Club) and to promote the takeover she held an open day comprising of a 4 hour spinnathon, body combat session, insanity and boxing.. Vivienne also decided she would like to raise money for Mariaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Pink Ladies ie AECC. So the Quesada Pink Ladies and some of Marias Pink Ladies

were on hand to organise a raffle. Also Debbie Weedon (Quesada Pink Ladies), Vivienne Shepherd and Janet Figueroa who organised the event were sponsored to take part in each event. There was also a BBQ and fashion show with a difference plus Bay radio were there all day providing the music and entertainment with Lee Fox. The day raised the fantastic amount of 978.30 euros. Is exercise as effective as drugs for heart disease and diabetes? A new study, published in the British Medical Journal, suggests that exercise and drugs often have similar results when used to treat heart disease, prevent diabetes and for stroke rehabilitation. The researchers even found that in some cases, exercise was more effective. “No statistically detectable differences were evident between exercise and drug interventions in the secondary prevention of coronary heart disease and prediabetes,” the study’s authors wrote. “Physical activity interventions were more effective than drug treatment among patients with stroke.” While this study isn’t a license to forgo pills that have been prescribed to you, it’s definitely worth adding more exercise to your daily routine - and even talking to your doctor about whether you could replace your pills with a structured fitness program. After all, the benefits of exercise are plentiful, and well documented. Just going for a long walk every day lowers your blood pressure, can help you lose weight, and could reduce your risk for breast cancer.

Start by mixing a small amount of lemon and lime juice with baking soda and pour over a hand sponge. According to the General Council of Notaries’ statistics on housing transactions, the number of purchases made by foreign buyers increased by 22.6% during the second quarter of 2013. Specifically, these buyers purchased 14,593 homes in Spain in that period, which the notaries said represents a “significant increase over previous quarters”. In the distribution of these operations, those made by non-resident foreigners accounted for 54.9% of the total. The Council said that “the behaviour between the segment of resident and non-resident foreigners has been inconsistent”, and that the most likely trigger of this recent surge would be the authorisation to grant residency permits to purchasers of real estate with a value of 500,000 euros or more. The first quarter experienced a moderate increase of 4.4%, following a “strong” increase in transactions in the last quarter of 2012 due to the elimination of the tax deductions for house purchases, which came into force on 1st January, while nonresident foreigners were seen as the “engine” of all foreign transactions, increasing by 43% year-on-year. The British community has donated a collection of 350 euros for schools in the Municipality. The British community of Zurgena, in collaboration with parents of students as well as shops and local businesses, has donated 350 euros to the Ayuntamiento for improvements and maintenance of schools in the Municipality. The money has been raised by organising a charity event. It was attended by about 220 people and was enlivened by musical groups playing popular songs from the 60s, to the delight of the audience. The Estación de Renfe was the setting for a Gala starring typical English dishes prepared by residents of the community for the appreciation of the Zurgeneros. Peter Dell and Gary Bowen, residents of Zurgena of British origin, explained the aim of these solidarity actions at the donation ceremony at the Ayuntamiento. ‘This was the seventh year in a row that we have organized charity events. Although previously we designated the collection for the orphanage at Vera, this time we thought about helping our local community and its facilities.’ The Alcalde, Luis Díaz, thanked the organisers for what he saw as ‘an important symbolic gesture, full of good intentions.’ Accompanied by other councillors he praised ‘the tremendous effort,’ and promised that the English community ‘will be treated as it deserves, working with them in any way that you request.’ His words were backed by support from the Concejal de Tercera Edad y Comunidad Británica, Jim Simpson and the leader of the Comercio y Turismo, Sampo Penttila.

For Information call Lyn on 966188430 or 635584431 or email lynatdenelledance@ hotmail.com Opening this weeks show were Sophie Ellis Bextor and Brendan with their interpretation of a Foxtrot. Sophie is now showing a much improved top line as she is lifting her core however she now needs to continue the lift through to her head which still has a tendency to be dropped marring an otherwise very good picture. There was a bit of gapping through the foxtrot but it was an otherwise excellent performance. I awarded her an 8 and the judges 35. Next up were Fiona Fullerton and Anton with a Rumba. Fiona has great legs but failed to straighten them which is an essential part of the Rumba and as a result she failed to use her hips which left her Rumba appearing plonky and lacking the necessary fluidity. I gave her 5 and the judges a total of 22. Following were Mark Benton and Ivetta and their Cha Cha Cha. This was danced with a hip hop edge (via the music), and Mark always shows great rhythm, energy and musicality

and because of his acting always delivers. Unfortunately tonight there was very little evidence of Cha Cha steps and due to the style of his trousers, you couldn’t see his leg or hip action which spoilt the performance a little for me. I gave him 7 and the judges 26. Ashley Taylor Dawson and Ola then danced a Viennese Waltz. His posture is improving but unfortunately as he has been told to stand up, he is now pushing his weight too far back which makes him look very stiff and will prevent him from getting the forward drive essential for this dance. His neckline is still somewhat awkward but cannot be corrected without the correct posture. He was also a bit flat footed, probably due to his weight being carried too far back. The judges gave him 31 and I gave him 6. Next up were Julien MacDonald and Janette and their Salsa. Julien is a real trier but somehow just can’t get it right. His timing is always suspect and because he doesn’t have much control his body and hips weren’t in sync so his Salsa basic looked like he had lost his horse. I awarded him 5 and the judges 23. Rachel Riley and Pasha then performed Quickstep. Although she has improved from last week, for me she looked as if Pasha was dragging her around the floor. Her legs were too stiff and because of this she couldn’t drive through her feet, so she lacked the necessary softness to get the Quickstep to appear easy. I gave her 5 and the judges 26. Next to dance were Ben Cohen and Kristina with their Salsa. With such a height differential,

the lifts used were great, the armography was nice and relaxed and Ben gave his Salsa what he could. However, his timing is still suspect and he had no hip action although he is improving every week. I scored him 6 and the judges a very generous 31. Deborah Meaden and Robin then danced Jive. I don’t know why, but the powers that be gave Deborah flat shoes!! She just ended up flat footed which resulted in a heavy jive, she didn’t point her toes on any of the kicks and it all looked really hard work for her - definitely not her dance. I gave her 3 and the judges a very generous 23. My favourite Natalie Gumede and Artem then performed a Quickstep. I sincerely hope that Natalie will be able to remain in this competition as she had problems with an old injury. She has a back injury with bulging discs and had to have strong painkillers and an epidural to be able to perform. That said she was ever the ‘ultimate professional’. This girl lives and breathes dance, her flow, rhythm and musicality are superb and she handled the difficult choreography with ease. There was a bit of gapping apparent and for that reason I gave her 9 and the judges 35. Patrick Robinson and Anya then danced a Cha Cha Cha. Patrick is still disappointing for me, he has what it takes but his flat footed action is still not being addressed. If he could use his ankles a bit more his performances would go up considerably. I awarded him 8 and the judges a total of 33. Next to dance were Abbey Clancy and Aljaz

with their version of a Tango. Abbey is a natural ballroom dancer and her Tango showed all the necessary staccatto action. Her core has improved but still needs to allow this lift to go through to her head and lift her chin more. I awarded her 8 with the judges 35. Next were Dave Myers and Karen and their Waltz. The people’s champion! Oh dear, this would have been a reasonable performance for week 1 but not acceptable for week 4! His posture is still awful, bottom stuck out, his weight is not over his toes so there is no drive or movement to his dancing. You could say that he is not a natural! I gave him a generous 3 and the judges 23. Closing this weeks show were Suzanna Reid and Kevin with their Samba. A very difficult dance to master, and Suzanna certainly gave it everything. For me her basic action was poor as she didn’t close her feet anywhere and it left an ugly leg line for most of her performance but she does have good timing and certainly looked to enjoy herself. I gave her 7 and the judges 29. The bottom 2 this week surprisingly were: Rachel Riley and Julien MacDonald (again! 3 weeks out of 3 - not deserved!) and after the dance off Julien was eliminated from the competition, although for me he was better than Rachel on the dance off. Who will improve the most next week? Can the top players be beaten? Can’t wait to see next weeks show? we would love to welcome you to one of our classes - but in the meantime Keep Dancing!!

That’s according to new data just released from 2,000 dog and cat owners in the Bayer Veterinary Care Usage Study conducted by the National Commission of Veterinary Economic Issues, BrakkeConsulting and Bayer Animal Health. ‘The data should make every veterinarian sit up and take notice.’ Says John Volk of Brakke Consulting. Collected through a combination of surveys, individual interviews and focus groups, the data offers the profession robust information about pet owner attitudes, and reasons behind the decline in veterinary visits. The study shows that; 63 percent of dog owners and 68 percent of cat owners question the need for regular veterinary care. Older pets see the vet far less frequently than younger pets. One-third of cats have not been to the vet in the past year. Many pet owners find the costs of care higher than expected. ‘The need for routine veterinary care is simply not well understood by pet owners.’ Volk says. The survey indicates that pet owners associate veterinary care with vaccinations, not routine examinations, and this is really standing in the way of pets getting the kind of routine exams they need.’ He added. The study results show the root causes for this decline in veterinary visits to be: Greater access to veterinary care through shelters, mobile vaccine clinics, specialists, etc. Pet owners substituting Internet research for clinic visits. The perception by pet owners that regular medical check-

ups are not necessary. The rising cost of care linked with the economic recession. “The recession did have an impact, but it was not the only thing,” Volk says. Karen Felsted, CEO of NCVEI, says ‘No matter how you look at these numbers, whether you look at veterinary practice studies or you look at numbers available from surveys of pet owners, the trend is the same. We are seeing less usage of veterinary practitioners than we did previously. The recession is not simply the cause, but it has exacerbated the situation.’ Ian Spinks, president and general manager of Bayer Animal Health North America,commented ‘with one-quarter of pet-owners having spent nothing at the veterinarian last year, I believe is that pets aren’t getting the care they need.’

HTC Android smart watch reportedly coming next year HTC execs said earlier this week that wearable tech was an area of interest, and now comes word it’s working on its own Android smart watch, to be released next year. HTC could be about to join the smart watch race. A report from Bloomberg claims the Taiwanese company is working on its own wrist-based smart device, and it’ll be released next year. The details are a bit scant at the moment, though. Apart from the fact it’ll run Google’s

Preparation method: Base:

• 55g butter •200g digestive biscuits, crushed •55g white sugar

Filling:

• 16oz Philadelphia cream cheese •1/3RD cup Baileys •225g sugar • 8oz double cream, whipped •grated chocolate • quarter cup of water, cold •1 pack gelatine You will need an 8inch loose bottom cake tin

1. Mix the 55g sugar, crushed biscuits and melted butter together in a pan. 2. Firmly press the mixture into the bottom of the cake tin using your hand 3. Place the water in a pan, sprinkle the gelatine over the top and leave to stand for 1 minute. Cook on a low heat for 3 minutes stirring continuously. Once all the granules have dissolved set aside 4. Mix the cream cheese and sugar and Baileys in small amounts, alternatively until its all mixed into the cream cheese. Beat well with a blender between each addition.(Tip: Do not mix the gelatine and baileys together to add to the cream cheese, it will curdle and form lumps in the finished cheesecake, add them separately) 5. Refrigerate the mixture until slightly thickened about 2030 mins 6. Meanwhile whip the double cream 7. Add the cream to mixture and stir in gently 8. Once mixed together pour over the crust and refrigerate 9. If desired grate chocolate on top for decoration

Blind entrepreneur launches app

A blind entrepreneur has launched a new app to revolutionise the way Britain’s 1.5 million visually impaired people eat out in the country’s restaurants. Matthew Wadsworth created the Good Food Talks app after discovering many blind and visually impaired people share his frustration at having menus read out loud to them.

Braille and large-print menus are also difficult to keep up to date. The businessman and musician, 38, was convinced there was a better way and the solution came to hand – his smartphone.

“The idea is that whether you are totally blind and use the textto-speech software or simply need to invert colours or zoom to make things clearer, the app makes ordering in a restaurant a less stressful experience,” said Mr Wadsworth.

Good Food Talks uses GPS tracking to display the nearest dining outlets signed up to the scheme. It uses a database of menus and the accessibility functions of your smartphone to take the stress out of ordering. While some restaurants offer Braille menus, this is not a complete solution since only 1 per cent of people in this category in the UK can read Braille.

In a survey run in conjunction with the Macular Society, the entrepreneur found that 87 per cent of visually impaired diners rely on their companions to read the menu aloud. Mr Wadsworth added: “The hope is that, with the app, everyone at the table is more equal, making dining out more dignified for everyone.”

Mr Wadsworth isn’t your everyday businessman. Born blind, he was the first blind student to attend the Royal Academy of Music and is a lute virtuoso. Last year, he played at the Paralympics closing ceremony. The principle behind Good Food Talks is that “visually impaired people shouldn’t have to pay to read a restaurant menu”. Instead, restaurants pay to upload menus and the scheme has been welcomed by the Sustainable Restaurant Association. A spokesman for the organisation said, “It should be a no-brainer for any restaurant to have better access to blind and visually impaired customers.” In addition to 77 branches of

Simon Kossoff, chief executive officer of Carluccio’s, said: “This is such an obvious idea and the technology is so simple that it amazes me nobody has done it before.” About 360,000 people are registered blind in the UK but as many as 1.5 million people are visually impaired to some extent, according to the Royal National Institute of Blind People and the Macular Society. Adrian Lee, 55, a blind musician from London, is one of app’s early adopters. He said: “I’m restricted to a few places that I know if I don’t want somebody else to read the menu out to me. This app has the potential not only to give me more independence, but also far more choice.”

Most memorable would be the “Mr Fusion” fuel tank in which Doc pours in beer and banana peels and then shoots off though time with Marty. But is this possible even today? Funnily enough yes it is. Using a “Gasifier”, any solid, dry organic matter can essentially be converted into gaseous fuel. Or, for the big kid in all of us, is the hoverboard!!!!!!!! The trilogy’s director, Robert Zemeckis famously claimed that hoverboards were real but not released to the public due to “parental safety concerns”. This was a hoax. Although a prototype hoverboard actually exists, it only hovers if no one is standing on it. Video-phones!!!! Yes they seemed like a strange gadget in the 80’s when the movies were released but they are real and most of us nowadays will have one. And the integration of Skype has made it a reality for all of us with a Smart-phone. In part 2 of the trilogy there was a cinema that was showing Jaws 19. In 3-D!!!!!!! (We see Marty get “eaten” by the huge hologramatic shark). Although we have 3-D movies they still aren’t genuinely “holographic”, the advances in the technology are advancing rapidly. The star of the movies has to be the DeLorean. It could travel anywhere through time. It had a flux capacitor and later the “Mr Fusion” to power it. As well as Doc Brown retro-fitting the car to make it fly, because “where they’re going, they don’t need roads”! Although you’d be hard pushed to see a DeLorean on any roads as they were only produced from 1981-1982 for the American market. The Camposol Residents Association Although in being for some years as an ad hoc organisation the Association formally adopted its constitution as a registered voluntary organisation in the summer of 2006. (Reg No 7943/1, CIF No : G73369167) It is dedicated to the development and well being of Camposol in Murcia. This township is now ten years old and has some 5000 dwellings. It is still under construction and will not be finished for some years. The development has a wide range of nationalities, Dutch, Belgium, Germans, Norwegians, French, and Spanish but is primarily British. Some 3000 Brits live here permanently with another 2000 owning holiday homes. This site enables all, but particularly those who live in the UK to keep in touch. Living here is a privilege, a broad arid river valley surrounded by mountains, twenty minutes from the Mediterranean, an hours drive from Murcia Airport, the cities of Murcia, Cartagena, Lorca, the resorts of Mazarron and Aguilas. A place which has been settled from before Roman times, with the oldest boat in the world in the harbour of Mazarron. These 3000 have settled here mostly over the past five years, although some have

lived here up to ten years. The past two years has seen bare villas turned into palaces with magical gardens, over 100 British owned businesses formed and developed. We now have 7 restaurants, a dozen bars, including one with a large events room, with full lighting stage and sound equipment. There is a large supermarket, taxis, builders merchant, swimming pool constructors and maintainers, even central heating installers! We are proud to live here amongst the Spanish, taking part in Spanish Cultural and Political life, but able to retain our own identity. Most of us carry Spanish driving licences, have Spanish Residence cards and are learning Spanish. We enjoy our visitors, whether they are family from the UK or holiday makers. This site consists of the minutes of our committee meetings and important announcements and press releases as well as a forum page open for discussions amongst members. The Association is open to all homeowners of Camposol and is controlled by an elected Liaison Committee who are democratically voted in.

I like pomegranates, though I’ve always regarded them as a bit of a challenge to eat – you can’t bite them like apples, or peel them like oranges, so I have developed my own method, which is effective, but not possible in polite society. First, I take my pomegranate outside, to the stone garden furniture, which doesn’t stain. I get the kitchen hand towel, wrap it around my neck and tie it at the back as though I were a giant baby. Using a very sharp knife, and squinting my eyes against the high-power juice jets, I cut it in half and then quarters. That was the easy, and comparatively clean part of the operation. I grab a quarter in my sticky wet fingers and turn it inside out. At this point some of the seeds will pop out and career away across the table, so I pursue them and scoop them up into the palm of my hand – it’s not possible to neatly pick them up, they either skitter away or burst. Having eaten the escapees, I turn my attention to the inverted quarter of fruit, sitting seed-side out on the table like a mutant alien sea slug. I have a quick look around, to make sure

nobody is looking, pick the section up and simply gronff the seeds off it with my teeth in a display of animal gluttony that would cause a well brought up gorilla to wince. However, I am aware of this fatal flaw in my sophisticated upbringing, so I set about to discover the ‘proper’ way to eat a pomegranate. According to Jamie Oliver you simply cut it in half and whack the back of each half with a wooden spoon, upon which the seeds give up and fall neatly into the handily placed bowl. All I can say is that my pomegranates are made of sterner stuff than Jamie’s! I whacked and whacked and ended up with the sort of mess that even hardened Scenes of Crime Investigators would have found disturbing! So I tried Method 2: I got a big bowl, half filled it with water, immersed the pomegranate, cut it in quarters, turned it inside out, and lightly brushed the exposed seeds off, the whole operation taking place completely under water (for the pomegranate). Once drained I had a neat bowl of seeds, and the immediate environment did not resemble a cheap remake of the Limaria Chain Saw Massacre. I can now eat pomegranates in Polite Society.

My friend Paul phoned me the other day and asked if I fancied a day out on his bike. No great distance, just a ride down to Los Alcázares for a spot of lunch and a couple of beers for me and soft drinks for him; the thrill of the open road and the exhilarating feel of the wind in our faces. By the way, what is a ‘spot’ of lunch? We all use the term but it’s ridiculous. I mean, it sort of indicates a smidgen of food; a micro portion of beef with two chips and a pea perhaps. Same as ‘square meal’, where did that come from? With Paul and me, a pile of lunch would be more accurate.

our bikers day out. When I say togup; Paul had dismissed the idea of leathers or even long pants. Shorts and tee shirt are fine he assured me, far too hot to bother with any of that stuff and besides, if we are involved in a pile up, we wouldn’t have a chance anyway.

So it was just a question of putting on the helmets. Not so easy for me though, with my sticky out ears and a mop of hair to cope with. It didn’t help that the helmet was made for a Hobbit and once I had maneuvered it into place I felt giddy with claustrophobia. It was hot too and with the eye shield down, like being inside a polythene bag – a feeling I had experienced before when I awoke with a start one night to find my wife standing there holding a Tesco bag over my head. I never did quite buy her story that she had been having a nightmare about horse burgers. Now Paul is a typical motor cycle man. He is a sort of scaled down version of Grizzly Adams; a lifelong Harley Davidson fan and in his younger day would have been a ringer for Dennis Hopper in that iconic bikers movie – Easy Rider. I on the other hand have nothing remotely Rocker or Peter Fonda about me and I find it hard to stay upright in a moderate breeze. I had not ridden pillion on a powerful motor cycle with multiple cc’s between my legs for many years, when one of my pals owned a relatively tame 250cc Matchless. He liked to show off by opening the

thing up to the max past the main gate of HMS Dauntless - a WRENS training camp in Burghfield near Reading. Eighty odd miles per hour and helmetless, it still gives me the heebies just thinking about it. And all my fears came to the fore, when Paul wheeled his bike into the street and proceeded to struggle to prevent it tipping over. Mmm? But I need not have worried. My friend has been riding these machines most of his life and it was just another one of his passing spells when he briefly forgets who he is and where he is at. Nothing to be concerned about he promised. Riding pillion is like riding a push bike, it’s something you never forget. Just so long as you go with the turns and the banking, and never panic by trying to stay upright when rider and bike are leaning over at a scary angle, everything will be fine. That’s all very well when you are in complete control, but as a passenger on one of those things, there is a definite tendency to lean the other way. Paul told me later that I was the perfect pillion passenger and he never even knew that I was there. To be honest there were a couple of occasions when I very nearly wasn’t, but I didn’t tell him that and just rose to the compliment. We had a pleasant lunch in a beachside restaurant, but conversation was

Nearly 600 million Euros a year! Can you believe it? That’s how much the theft of shopping trolleys around the world costs the retail industry each year. Quite why anyone in their right mind would want to steal a shopping trolley is something beyond my comprehension; most of them have only three wheels that work properly so they go in a permanent zigzag direction, even before you get to the section selling the wine! Apart from the why question, how anyone steals one is a real mystery, surely you’d be more than a little conspicuous pushing a trolley, miles from your local supermarket? Hardly done undercover is it? If it’s true that so many are stolen we may well ask, what happens to them after that? Well you use them for Shopping Trolley Day of course! In New Orleans they have Shopping Trolley Day-though they call it Shopping Cart Day. On the designated day people push their trolleys, which are generally full of going to your head juice, down a predetermined route Graham is married to the finish. I think we should campaign for Bus Stops to be brought into the 21st Century, with all modern technology and even-now here’s an interesting thought-a bus or two now and again!

Many foreign inhabitants and visitors know Almeria City just for its airport. Whether on the red eye from Gatwick or via another UK route, many arrive only to scuttle off to their homes or holiday destinations without wondering about what else is on offer. The City has a beautiful old quarter with excellent restaurants, tapas bars, art galleries and museums. Stunning architecture abounds, topped by the Moorish Alcazaba towering above. The Paseo de Almeria is a broad tree lined boulevard; running from the port to Plaza Purchena it’s filled with chain stores and boutiques. It’s the commercial hub of the city with some curious black news stand kiosks dotted along the way. Another world however lies hidden the surface and the kiosks have trap doors leading 3metres and deeper below ground. At Plaza Purchena for the grand sum of 2€ the intrepid will learn more. The entrance to El Refugio is a modern glass building with a suspended

The designer of the tunnels; architect William Rubio had one such entrance at his home for the public plus he built an extra gallery so his family had some private space. After the Civil War ended in 1939, the tunnels remained open in case Spain was drawn into WWII. Then in 1945 the entrances were sealed with some entrances covered by the aforementioned kiosks. In 2001they were rediscovered by accident during the construction of an underground car park. The city started renovations aiming to open in time for the Mediterranean games in 2005. Instead they opened the next year in 2006, being now the City’s third most popular tourist attraction. Booking is advisable as due to space constraints only a maximum of 25 people are allowed on each of the 4 daily tours. Or try your luck, as we did and got lucky!

Here the story unfolds firstly via a short film, interviews with now elderly locals tell the story of how when the Civil War erupted in 1936, the city council along with help from the Republican Government set about designing and constructing an air raid shelter large enough to hold 40,000 people. During the war German, Italian and Nationalists conducted 52 bombing raids, the most devastating of which killed 40, injured 150 and destroyed 200 buildings. An original staircase leads down beneath the glass building to a passageway some 1.3 metres wide with a bench running along one side. Supposedly there were 101 of these exits but only 67 have been discovered. The passageway is one of many feeder passages into the main tunnel that extends the whole length of the Paseo de Almeria; the main tunnel is 2m wide with benches each side and extends about a kilometre towards the port. Originally they were dirt floors with smoking prohibited. A generator provided light and there was a system for pumping clean air in. Directly beneath the city market is a much deeper section that served as food store, so in case of a prolonged bombardment supplies could easily be moved below. Along with street entrances

Is it actually worth it?

This type of question is always fraught with controversy, if for no other reason than it, by definition, has to be a personal choice. It doesn’t matter what my opinion is regarding this subject, the fact remains that we all have personal preferences. So, not being one to shy away from controversy, loud mouthed bullies and the intellectually challenged, Here goes nothing! This line of thought started a couple of months ago when I was asked to deliver a talk, to the Albox Computer Club regarding the imminent loss of English TV as a results of the changing satellite situation, and what alternatives are currently available. This was followed up by a discussion on the possible down sides of Internet based TV and why, in reality, we, the paying public, should not be too worried. Recently, I was invited to a friend’s home to watch a demonstration by one of an ever increasing number of internet TV sales-persons. Two points to make absolutely clear: 1) I will not advertise anyone’s business apart from my own and 2) I will not tell you “Joe Bloggs Internet Service” or any other individual’s product or service is crap! You will have to find that out for yourselves – Sorry! Having set out the rules let’s get on with the observations. The people who kindly offered the demonstration on the Tuesday morning were surprisingly honest and didn’t “Hard Sell” the product – a very good start! The device was about the size of a cigarette packet but contained a fully working Android (an Operating System similar to Linux – another topic for another day) computer! These devices start at 35 – 40€. Research indicates that these boxes are in the region of 60€ each. The people selling them, were doing so at 160€. Before you get up in arms about the 100€ mark-up bear in mind that hundreds of hours have gone into finding EXACTLY was was

required to bring the box, software and internet tv addresses together in a single usable bundle. These people were lovely and if I were ready to buy one of these devices as a result of the sales people, I would have one right now! As part of studying the device in preparing to give the next talk I have come across the same problems, and solutions, as everyone else who is in the process of setting up internet TV. The technical understanding required to bring these varied components together, is not too difficult to acquire, but do we want to do it? This brings me back, quite nicely, to personal choices. Today’s advice to anyone interested in internet TV, the technologies and therefore the costs involved is simply this: 1) The most expensive will be, at best, a status symbol and might not be the best product for your needs! 2) The cheapest will invariable be exactly that, but if it fulfils your needs, then go for it. 3) Learn by other peoples mistakes and don’t repeat them. 4) There is always more than one way to skin a cat! I truly hope that this may be some use to anyone looking for a satellite alternative and that you find exactly what you need, at the price that’s right and you have many happy years of sticking 2 fingers up at the BBC licensing department. One final thought, and this is the MOST IMPORTANT one – Internet TV is Free! No Monthly Bills, No Connection Fees and NO BRIT’S RIPPING OFF BRIT’S! Can someone help me off this soapbox please? “Now, this is a snazzy little car,” says my wife Caroline as we sit in the Citroen C1 Connexion.

(it uses the same floorpan and bodyshell) has a five speed manual gearbox and a 998cc petrol engine. You would be forgiven for thinking that this makes for a pretty dull car but because it is so light, just 805kg, it is possible to reach 60mph from standstill in a shade over 12 seconds and onto a top speed of 98mph. Very reasonable figures. Obviously when there are four adults inside, these results are hampered somewhat as they are when strong winds pick up, as they do in the test. Then there is the 65mpg (combined) figure, which is better than some diesels. At tick over the engine is audible from inside and there is a slight judder but my wife quickly reminds me that this is a massive improvement on her cherished Hyundai Pony; sadly deceased. It is possible to squeeze a pushchair into the tiny boot or a week’s worth of shopping but not both at the same time. The only criticism I have, which I admit is partly my fault, is that if your hands slip from the ten-to-two position on the steering wheel it is all too easy to sound the horn, which has occurred on a number of occasions, frightening the motorist in front and embarrassing me. While this five-door hatchback is finished to a good standard there is no denying that this is a bit of a tin can. I shut the rear door a little too enthusiastically and I fear that if I do it any harder it might change shape. The seats are comfy although the driver’s seat could do with a little more padding in the lumbar region. Parking is a cinch due to its size. The rear windows are fitted with rear privacy glass and rather than winding up or down the rear passenger windows pop out for opening.

I can see why she instantly warms to it because it is a very girlie car with its lipstick red wing mirrors and door handles and its striking black finish. No sooner have I started driving it and another model exactly the same passes me with a young lady driving it. Unashamed I carry on regardless of the lipstick red edged rev counter, speedometer and door trim… It is a very compact city car and surprisingly there is a good amount of legroom in the front and back, which puts competitors like the Fiat 500 to shame. Despite its blatantly female characteristics (as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz) if the hard-nosed male motorist sticks with it, it provides a good driving experience. I like the simple minimalist dashboard and the fact that at night when the lights are on the section housing the fan controls lights up. The air conditioning, in common with the Vauxhall Corsa tested last week, does struggle in high temperatures. But there’s more to this dashboard than at first meets the eye because there are four simple buttons arranged in the shape of a coin on the dash to the left of the steering wheel. These are actually part of what the industry calls black box technology. One button will call a call centre and you can tell them where you want to go and then spoken directions will be provided throughout the course of your journey. Another switch patches you through to Citroen Assist breakdown service. It’s also possible to make a 999 call through this system as well as connecting you directly to your Citroen insurance. But this black box will also record erratic driving behaviour and feed it back to the insurance company as a way of keeping insurance premiums lower for well behaved young drivers. This technology isn’t infallible because sharp braking for instance could be the result of reacting to others’ bad driving. During our drive my wife and I recall the time we hired a Peugeot 107 and drove it from Romania to Bulgaria and back. We had fun in that car and if my memory serves me right we were able to drive from one country to the next on just one tank of fuel. That’s how efficient the 1-litre unit is. Caroline says that this is the car she would buy if ever she chose to replace her P-registered Fiat Punto. Praise indeed.

Double win for the Ford-Dunn brothers at Alicante’s Spanish Supermoto round

and former Spanish champion Israel Escalera. Anthony’s last race was gripping as he fought through to 2nd position after a bad start that gave him enough points to take the overall victory. Next out was older brother Mat who was racing in the SM Master 35 class. Mat finished a close 2nd in his first race and knew that to take the overall win and maintain his championship lead then a win in the 2nd race was the only option. Before Mat had even lined up on the grid for the second race he was in trouble as the toll of racing in 30 degrees of heat on a rough track had given him chronic cramps in his arms and legs that made racing impossible. The start of the race was delayed slightly whilst mat was fed salt on the grid until the cramps subsided and racing could start. Once the race started Mat found himself in third position with some work to do to get to the front, but he did just that with an

outstanding effort that saw him dive down the inside of the leader to take the lead and the win on the last corner of the last lap. The 21 result gave him the overall win and both brothers stood on the top step of the podium at the end of the days racing. Team Sponsor Shane Stratton from Stratton Motorsports had flown in to watch the days racing and was delighted with the double victory and the possibility of clinching the SM Master championship at the forth coming Albaida race. With Mat now holding a 20 point

lead in the SM Master 35 Spanish championship, he now has it all to play for in the final round of the Spanish championship to be held at Albaida, Alicante on the 2nd and 3rd November. 5 Medals to start the swimming season!

This weekend was the start of the new 2013/2014 swimming season and Club Natacion Torrevieja got off to a flying start. The first trophy competition took place in the municipal pool Petrer, with the XIV Trophy “Villa de Petrer”. Three hundred and fifty five swimmers from 11 clubs competed in a range of events covering all age groups. Club Natacion Torrevieja had 20 swimmers compete and they

amassed a total of 5 medals and many other good swims and personal bests from the other team members. The youngest boys Densel Fusha, Jacobo Ruiz and Vitalio Veres all clocked up new personal best times in the 50m freestyle event. Amy Connolly then followed being the only girl in the same category 50m freestyle with another personal best. Then it was the turn of the

oldest group members Yuriy Lymar with a new personal best in 200m freestyle event and Vicki Connolly in her 200m freestyle. Next followed the boys 100m freestyle race and the clubs first bronze medal from Elian Rio Castillo in the Alevin category. Team mate Georgy Murskiy also earnt a new best time in the same event. And the medals kept coming with the girls 100m freestyle, Paula Garcia winning silver in the Alevin category and Ruth Brassington silver in the Young Absolute group. Other team mates Louise Brassington and Skye Burns earnt good times in the same event, Skye curbing her nerves as it was her first race! The 100m Breaststroke event followed next with more personal bests from Nikita Mikhaylov, Alexandra Amat and Samira Lucumbi, with Edurne Moreno being very close to her PB. More medals followed in the 100m Butterfly with Piroska Rideg winning gold in

ITV ORIHUELA RFC LEARN HARD LESSON ITV Orihuela RFC came down to earth with a bump after last weeks victory great over Torrevieja Tigers. After getting the double over Albacete last season they came to Orihuela looking for revenge, and they got it. Unfortunately, I missed the first half, but with one man down Orihuela could not make the extra man count and went in 22-7 down, with Alvaro scoring the try and Jose converting. With the second half been a lot more even with both sides playing some great attacking rugby and some resilient defence, but eventually Albacete broke the defence to get the try bonus point. ITV Orihuela RFC pressed hard to get back in the game and eventually did so with

some great opportunism from Ivan breaking out of the 22 to skip past the Albacete defence to win the foot race to score a great try under the posts, and Jose getting the extras, to get within striking distance of at least of a losing bonus point. Unfortunately, it was not to be so with Albacete getting the final say in the match with another try to win 32-14. A little bit of a sour note towards the end of the game with a red card for Albacete for punching and two yellow cards for Orihuela. The game was actually played in the true spirit of the game and the best team won on the day. This coming weekend ITV Orihuela RFC’s second team are away to UCAM seconds

Dear Members & Friends, Last year our chairman Eric participated at a very special Charity day at the Cheste F1. racing circuit near Valencia, the event known as “Jornados de co-pilotes de education especial en el circuito ricardo”. From my discussion with Eric, many classic cars turnup, register, chat, queue up in the pit lane, collect a child (handicapped, either physically or mentally), drive two or three laps on the circuit, back to the pit lane, collect another child & same procedure for ca. 2 hrs. This very special charity event takes place on 14th Dec. this year. It is a very good chance to represent our club on this special day & be able to enjoy a unique experience of driving your cherished Jag-Wah on a F1 circuit for free. Look on our web site, past events 2012, 15 Dec for Eric’s article re last year event, it should give you a bit more detail than I have written. As the summer draws to a slow close, the Society travelled down to Seve’s course at Peraleja. It proved a busy day with 46 members and guests wishing to take part. As usual at Peraleja we were able to go from the first and the tenth tee so there was not much waiting around for the last off. It was a stableford format enjoyed by everyone and there was a buzz of excitement as we all collected on first tee ready to try and complete the first formidable hole, some were more successful than others. It is always a pleasure to play this course and enjoy the magnificent views of the Mar Menor glistening in the distance from the top holes, unfortunately for some their attention was focused on the Oleanders for those looking for balls and not the view. A thank you goes to the staff at the course as they are always most amenable and help a great deal. After wading through all the cards the results were:

It has to be said that the course is in very good condition and the staff were very obliging, even if the lady behind the desk who being Polish wasn’t to enamoured with the night before football result and was heard to say – no, sorry cannot repeat what she muttered but ended in “happens” so please feel free to use your imagination. If in doubt, speak to Sandra Twentyman who not only knows every English swear word, but Norwegian ones too. Not only does she know then, she uses them. On the day, it is fair to say that many golf balls were “mislaid” in the stuff that goes “splash” when a solid object falls from the sky and hits it and therefore there is no doubt that the sleeve of Srixon Soft Feels for the NTP’s were of great value to Arne Hansson, Sandra Twentyman and Adam Brown.

Over forty San Miguel Golf Society members and guests went off in search of an elusive pack of wolves last Wednesday…… where?........ CROYDON, I hear the lovers of corny adverts cry out. It was actually a lot nearer than Croydon, it was near Aspe at the picturesque Font del Llop course.

The team results were, surprisingly very close and it was less than one shot that separated the top 4 pairs where 20% of the joint handicap was used.

Translated as the wolves’ watering hole, this tricky course nestling in a secluded valley certainly looks the part as being home to a pack of hungry hounds……but once again, as on previous visits, the only such pack I’ve seen there has been thirsty golfers!! Standing on the first tee with quite a strong breeze in your face, it gave the distinct impression that the vast majority of the front nine was going to be tough. It was certainly the case for most of the field who struggled on the front but made up for it on the homeward half. The course was in good condition apart from a few dodgy patches which were adequately roped and marked off. The greens were true and pretty slick and the first cut was just at that awkward depth which seemed to swallow up any ball that went the slightest astray. Many a time there were four golfers looking for just one ball that

had done no more than simply roll off the fairway…..reminding me of a previous visit here when, in a similar situation, one of the group playing an adjoining hole came across a ball and called to his pal, “There’s one here, what are you playing?” “Can’t remember,” the pal replied, “It was a small white one with a bit of writing on!” he added. “You’re in luck,” his mate said, “This is it!!”……I must stress that they were not members of SMGS. John Aitchison won 2 of the NTP’s with the other 3 going to Alan MacDonald, Norman Padmore and Mike Stone. The top 3 visitors were Graham Jordan (30), Tim Goldsmith (32) and with a very commendable 34 top spot went to Idris Foster. 4th in the Bronze division was Stanley Matthews (32), 3rd was

Tuesday Night Trios Ten Pin Bowling League Week Five played 15th October

Tuesday night saw the form team of the League, Splash take on the League leaders Split Happens, with Splash coming out on top with a 6-2 win. High man for Splash was Ivan Munoz with a 180 scratch game and a 611 h/cp series.

The latest recruits to the League, The Dreamers, started well against Juans Warriors with a 616 h/cp team game but, the Warriors dug in and with Maria Jesus Perez bowling an excellent 585 h/cp series, ran out 62 winners.

Caballo Negro recorded a 6-2 victory over the out of sorts Cornish Pride, Paku Hakonen for CN top scored with a 612 h/cp series. Crazy Pins, who joined us last season and, so far have found the going a little tough, got themselves moving up the league with a 8-0 win over Bar Mosquitos, who had John Tennant top scoring with a 533 series. Crazy Pinz Team Captain Ingrid Wilms bowled her first 600 h/cp series, to lead her team to victory.

Last seasons League winners, Team Finland, showed why they will be there at the end of the season, with a hard fought 4-4 draw with the Mixers. Pirjo Koskie bowling a 607 h/cp series for TF and, IngaLill Soderstrom nearly matching her with a 584 for the Mixers.

Team of the night was Hall y Day, bowling against Los lobos and winning 8-0, they recorded a team high game of 723 and a team high series of 1963. High individual was Tony Ray with a 264 h/cp game

Early League pace setters Lucky Strike snatched the first two games against Los Bandidos by one and six pins but, LB with a Barry Tolson 199 scratch game, managed to win the third game and collect the overall pinfall points to split the points 4-4. Maurice Allen of LB bowling a steady series of 599 and, Jackie Priest coming in with a fine 593 series for LS.
