Benefit fraud team in Spain is recovering a record £5m of taxpayers’ money
Top three cheats this year had claimed over £200,000 More than £5m of UK taxpayers’ money lost to benefit fraud abroad is now being recovered by Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) investigators in Spain.
The dedicated team in Madrid has investigated more than 1,250 cases of benefit fraud by British residents over the last five years, and works closely with UK counterparts to bring fraudsters to justice. ‘Abroad fraud’ is now the fourth largest type of benefit fraud, up almost 90% in the last three years – and Spain is the top of the list, with 769 cases investigated last year alone. The free and confidential hotline to use in Spain to report suspected benefit cheats is 900 554 440. The top three benefit fraudsters in Spain who have been convicted so far this year had claimed some £217,000 between them. All three have now received jail sentences and been ordered to repay the money they stole. · Mrs J.P, 62, from Hove, this month pleaded guilty to over £130,000 of
benefit fraud and received a 12-month prison sentence. She failed to tell DWP that she owned a property in Spain and had numerous different bank accounts whilst she was fraudulently claiming Income Support, Pension Credit, Disability Living Allowance, Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit over a nine-year period. · Mr J.R, 72, from Exeter, was this month jailed for six months for fraudulently claiming almost £50,000 of disability benefits and Pension Credit over eight years, when in fact he was living with his partner in one of two properties he owned in Spain. · Mr T.W, 73, of Aylesbury, falsely claimed £37,000 of Housing Benefit and Pension Credit between 2007 and 2010 while he was living in Spain. He was sentenced to six months in jail in January and ordered to pay back all the money. The UK Government is taking more action to tackle abroad fraud by increasing the use of life certificates to stop fraudsters continuing to claim benefits when a claimant has died, and increasing data-sharing so foreign authorities tell the UK about overseas claimants.
David Freud, Minister for Welfare Reform, said: “Benefit fraud is wrong both at home and abroad, and fraudsters need to know that our investigators will look into cases wherever they are and that their benefits will be stopped. “We are toughening the rules to crack down on benefit cheats and recovering more money than ever as part of the Government’s long-term economic plan – clawing back a landmark £5m in Spain. “But we know there is more to do and we are returning fairness to the welfare system to make sure it delivers for people in need and the hardworking taxpayer who funds it.” Richard West, Head of DWP Fraud and Error Service, said: “This is a significant achievement for our team in Spain and will hopefully serve as a warning to benefit cheats no matter where they are in the world. “Fraudsters need to know that our investigators have the powers to track them down and that being overseas is no hiding place. We are determined to crack down on people who play the system, so that benefits only go to those who really need this help.”
If you suspect a benefit cheat in Spain, call the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) hotline on 900 554 440. Your call is free and confidential. All fraudsters face either an administrative penalty or criminal prosecution and all must pay back every penny they have obtained, so that taxpayers’ money continues to help the people most in need. Typical frauds committed abroad include claims by people leaving Great Britain after their claim starts, people failing to notify DWP before leaving the country or staying abroad for too long, and families who fail to report the death of someone living abroad permanently and continuing to receive benefits. Abroad fraud totalled £82m in 2013/14, including £48m of Pension Credit, £11m of Housing Benefit, £8m of Income Support and £15m of Employment and Support Allowance. The total was slightly below the £84m in 2012/13, after rising from £55m in 2011/12 and £44m in 2010/11. Source: www.fco.gov.uk

‘A frenzy of excitement’ was how one concert-goer described the show given by Melody Makers International in their production of ‘Best of Broadway’ last Saturday. The Orihuela Costa Resort resounded with standing ovations and enthusiastic applause throughout the two hour spectacular - the brainchild of singer and conductor Nigel Hopkins. Starting with Lullaby of Broadway the show included music from Miss Saigon, Les Miserables, Paint Your Wagon and Cabaret. Highlights included a resounding performance of Seventy Sox Trombones and Seasons of Love from Rent. The first half was brought to a passionate conclusion with You’ll Never Walk Alone sung by the amazing soprano Alyson Horsfall, soaring above a massive harmonic crescendo given by Melody Makers International. Cantemos! Youth choir caused real excitement with a staged medley from Oliver, with Hadley Coleman in the title role. The choreography of the 20 children was crisp and well-rehearsed, and the medley ended with a superb rendering of Who Will Buy? by the whole cast. They repeated this success in the second half with a medley from Sound of Music, ending with seven soloists
Summer Season
singing the enigmatic So Long, Farewell. Notable solo performances came from Christine Lombardy, Graham Cooke and Mary Beer, with excellent performances from the young soloists Holly Neeson, Elise MacGregor and Janelle Gaskell. The hit of the night came with a staged performance of the Les Miserables classic ‘Master of the House’ with Eric Berg and Jane Atkinson as the thieving innkeeper and his wife. Produced in costume it’s antics and presentation left the audience wild with enthusiasm and praise. The whole show was compered by conductor Nigel Hopkins who brought the evening to a close with both choirs joining in with a spirited performance of a medley from Mamma Mia! A very long and rapturous standing ovation followed - and everyone left happy. A bucket collection was taken in aid of local charity Help At Home, and with Nigel Hopkins keeping his promise to the audience of matching anything collected at the afternoon performance, the charity benefitted by an amazing 1,000 euros. Auditions for Feature Film
Summer Solstice Bolnuevo Beach BBQ
Twenty-one people gathered on Bolnuevo playa for the Humanists of Murcia Summer Solstice Fiesta. There was a petanca competition, which most people joined in. The semi final was between Jon and Vince and Paul J and Rick. Paul J eventually won the final and received a highly coveted Humanist T shirt. Ann led the group down to the sea for a lesson in Lyengar Yoga which, when the hamstrings returned to normal length, was enjoyed by all. The free food was Jon’s famous tapenade, chicken from the Mazarrón market and bread from Bolnuevo’s Milagro store (open all hours). Apparently there was something else for the three veggies. Nibbles, starters, salads, tarts and puddings were brought by individuals but shared. Great fun and chat was had by all and the only disappointment was the lack of wind for the Kite Flying competition. John was most upset as he had brought along 3 kites and Martin spent an amazing three pounds on his kite. (However, the Kite Competition
was reconvened the next day when, allegedly, Jon and Joan won). This was the last event of the season although there are lunches being organised. Go to the Humanists of Murcia facebook page for more information https://www.facebook.com/groups/ humanistgroup.murcia/

I think I speak for all women when I say we want to feel beautiful. Not just look beautiful, but feel it. Feel it from the inside out. Radiate it. Embrace it. And do it without caking on layers of makeup. Now don’t get me wrong: I’m the type of girl who neeeeds to apply some concealer in order not to scare small children when I walk out the door. But lately I have been paring

ladies... a new style... a new look... a new you
down my glam routine in an attempt to love how I look sans makeup. The first week didn’t go so well. I felt naked without makeup. I felt bashful with a bare face. And I felt like a second-rate me. However, I quickly realized that if I was going to stick to this fresh-faced new me, then I was going to have to incorporate some new natural skincare tricks to help me feel beautiful without makeup. Curious to know what I did? Read on. 1. Make SPF your new BFF. I’ll admit it, during my 20’s I was reckless. I rarely used sunscreen, I baked out in the sun for hours, and never once considered the damage I was causing my skin. I’m now paying for that behavior in my 30s, and let me tell you, I wish I could shake my twentysomething self. These days I make it a morning priority to slather on the sunscreen whether it is sunny or not.

You see, nearly 80% of our overall sun exposure is incidental (according to the Sun Safety Alliance), meaning those walks to the car, that stroll through the dog park, or the errands you ran on your lunchtime are all adding up to premature wrinkles and skin damage if you don’t slap on the SPF. It’s such a simple tweak to make. Just apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen each day during your morning routine to help keep your skin looking as young and healthy as possible. It may seem like no big deal, but trust me: clear, healthy, glowing skin is one of the easiest ways to feel beautiful without makeup. 2. Drink your morning cup of hot... water? I love me a nice cup of tea to start the morning, but lately I have been making the switch to plain old hot water with lemon. Yes, it sounds boring, but incorporating a cup of hot water and lemon is one of the best things you could do for yourself in the morning. Not only does it help to wake up your senses but it flushes and purifies your body of toxins, while also reducing your chance of future skin sensitivities. Besides, water hydrates your body, which keeps your skin supple so you can rock that dewy glow... without having to apply highlighter to get the same effect. 3. Get your scrub on. Speaking of dewy glows, incorporating a simple exfoliation twice a week will ensure your dry, dead, and dull skin cells don’t suffocate your skin and block up your pores. You see, when we don’t scrub the lifeless layers of skin off our face, those dead skin cells become opaque and don’t reflect light properly, causing our skin to look, well, blah. To combat this, mix equal parts of baking soda and water and give it a good stir. Once it is properly combined, apply it to your face and rub it into your skin gently for up to two minutes. When your two minutes are up, wash it off, pat dry and moisturize with a few drops of coconut oil. Then just stand back and marvel at how healthy your skin looks. 4. Keep hands off. We all catch ourselves doing it – resting your chin in your hand, popping pimples, rubbing your eyes or massaging your forehead. And you know what? It’s hurting your skin. Since the skin on our face is the most delicate on our body, it is easily damaged, stretched, and torn. Each time you rub your eyes. Each time

you tug at your skin. Each time you rest of face on your hand. Each time you scratch your face or pick at your skin or pop pimples, you are causing micro-tears in your skin. These micro-tears eventually lead to future wrinkles, and what’s more, they can also cause a gradual degradation of your skin. Moral of the story? Keep your hands off your face. Enough said. 5. Tea is for tanning. If there is one quick and easy way to feel beautiful without makeup, it’s with a healthy hue. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying head outside and bake in the sun or run to your nearest indoor tanning salon and embrace your inner Snooki. I’m simply suggesting you get your DIY on and create your own tan. All you need is tea. To make your own self-tanner: • Boil two cups of water. • Add in 5 tea bags and allow them to steep for about 20 minutes. • Once your tea has cooled, remove the tea bags and pour your tea into a clean spray bottle. • Standing in either your shower or bathtub, spray yourself one body part at a time, allowing your skin to dry before applying another coat. • Allow your skin to completely dry before getting dressed. Not only will you have a killer faux-glow, but your skin will feel moisturized and soft. It’s a win-win! I know first hand how challenging it can be to feel like your gorgeous self when you’re barefaced and vulnerable; but if you can work these five tips into your daily routine your skin will look healthier than ever, giving you a darn good reason to feel beautiful without makeup. SOLTIMES july 2014
Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. Today we will continue to develop our understanding of the VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocols) and I will try to make it interesting but apologise now if I fail as it is, at best, a dust-bowl of a subject. Voice-over-Internet protocol (VoIP) is a methodology (and we all want an ‘ology’) or group of technologies for delivering voice communications and multimedia sessions over Internet Protocol (IP) networks, such as the Internet. Other terms commonly associated with VoIP are IP telephony, Internet telephony, voice over broadband (VoBB), broadband telephony, IP communications, and broadband phone service. Now that mouthful is over, lets first translate techno-gobbledegook into something more like English. Internet Protocol or IP (everyone knows about their IP address) is a multi layered sandwich. This sandwich is designed to make sure that whatever is sent over the internet does, in fact, get to its destination, intact. The design goes way back to 1974 and hasn’t had or needed any major improvements since. Having said that, there has been a change in the address system. The standard 168.192.0.1 (standard router ip address) format of 4 groups of numbers each being no more than 255 has reached it’s limit. There are just so many people connecting to the internet today that another system had to be devised. This is just for information as you will probably never notice any difference! Every single chunk of data has to be packaged to ensure its safe deliver. Maybe a breakdown of these packets will help our understanding. 1. First come the data. This can be a single letter, a 10th
of a second of audio, or 1 frame of video. 2. Then, in front of the chunk comes a ‘Header’ which holds the source and destination IP (who from and to) information, The length (in bits) of the data and finally a checksum (mathematical calculation) to ensure that the data is correct on arrival. 3. In front of this is the ‘IP header’ which tells where this packet fits into the jigsaw puzzle as well as adding further security. 4. Finally, the whole packet is wrapped in a final layer that marks itself as a complete frame. The data part can be anything but in this case it is a voice component. When we speak to one another, we create pulses in the air and the ear picks up these pulses, converts them to electrical signals and transmits them to the brain. Computers do something similar. A sound is converted by a process called ‘sampling’ (breaking it down into thousands of tiny slices every second) and storing this converted information onto a computer (usually in one of a number of formats – mp3, wav, ogg and flac are all common). These tiny slices are the data portion of the data packet that is transmitted over the internet. All of this is ‘all well and good’ and ‘long haired’ beyond reason but to understand how it works is to have confidence in the security of your conversation, emails and in fact, everything that you send over the internet. So next time you use Skype, Viber, GoogleTalk or FaceTime, give a half seconds thought to just how much inventive imagination has gone into making long distance communications simpler and safer. I’m now off to Jack’s Bar in Albox for my Friday afternoon computer clinic but if you need help sooner, Ring or email me or even knock on my door.
For further information or advice on computing, contact Trevor on 689 892 745 or canducomputing@hotmail.co.uk
It’s in their nature A scorpion was on the riverbank wanting to cross the water. He asks a frog to carry him across. But you are a scorpion and you’ll sting me and I will die says the frog. The Scorpion says that if he stung him then surely they would both drown. Reassured the frog allows the scorpion to jump on his back and swims across the river. Half way the scorpion arches his tail and stings the frog. Just before paralysis sets in the frog manages to ask why the scorpion stung him as now they will both die. The scorpion answers ‘it’s in my nature!’ Another frog grew tired of living on his swampy island and wanted to explore the big wide world that lay across the river. River snakes lay in wait hoping for a meal of tasty frog. He couldn’t find anywhere safe to cross. Just then, large 2 eyes popped up from under the water. It was a crocodile. Hello said the crocodile what’s a little frog doing
hanging about by the river bank? The frog hopped back a safe distance and told the crocodile of his dream to explore the world which was thwarted by the river snakes. The crocodile offered to carry the frog across the river. The frog was no fool and didn’t trust the crocodile saying he was scared that the crocodile would eat him half way across or drag him under the water so the snakes would get him. The crocodile asked why he would allow the pesky snakes get a free meal when he was king of the river. The crocodile suggested that the frog sit on the end of his tail, away from his snapping jaws. So the frog hopped onto the tip of the crocodile’s tail and they started off across the river. The crocodile couldn’t use his tail to steer as if he dipped it into the water the snakes would eat the frog. So the crocodile asked the frog to jump on his back instead. Once he had done so

they moved across quickly. The frog couldn’t see very much from where he was so the crocodile suggested the frog hopped onto the top of his head to admire the view. At first the frog refused so the crocodile asked him why he would go to bother of crossing the river and risk losing his dinner to the snakes. Reassured the frog hopped onto the crocodiles head, he saw dragon flies dart across the water and the bank getting closer behind the bulrushes. He judged he would soon be able to leap to safety avoiding the crocodile’s jaws. Just then the crocodile started to sniff and asked the frog to check his nose as some fluff was irritating it. The frog wondered how a big scaly crocodile would be irritated by a bit of fluff but could see the tears welling up in his eyes as he was about to sneeze. So the frog inched up to the snout
and looked for the fluff. I can’t see anythi…… were the frog’s last words as the crocodile went snap and ate him. In the news this week an Australian crocodile ‘handler; was bitten by ‘Jon’ a 3.7 metre long croc and dragged into the water. Not sure ‘handler’ is the right term when talking about crocodiles but anyway he escaped without serious injury. ‘Shark Bites Man in Florida’ was another recent headline. The Great White was illegally caught on a fishing hook and struggled for 30 minutes to escape until a swimmer accidentally swam onto the line so causing the shark to bite out in panic. Only then did the fisherman cut the line. If God had meant us to live on water he would have given us all yachts. Leave them be, it’s in their nature!

Heathrow issues must-be-charged gadget advice
Heathrow Airport has told passengers to ensure all electronic devices carried as hand baggage are charged before travel if they are flying to the US. It posted details of the new rule on its website and Facebook page. The move follows a request from the US that “certain overseas airports” implement enhanced security measures. The UK government has also revised its rules to state that if a “device doesn’t switch on, you won’t be allowed to bring it on to the aircraft”. Affected passengers have been told they may also have to undergo extra screening measures. The Department for Transport declined to say whether other UK airports would enforce a similar restriction on flights to the US. American officials said last week they were aware of a “credible” terrorist threat, but have not linked the security changes to any specific intelligence. Read more on: www.bbc.com

SOLTIMES july 2014
With retirement savings dwindling, more and more of us are wondering if we’ll be able to retire as planned. Many baby boomers, especially, will have to keep working long past traditional retirement age just to make up for the beating their retirement plans have taken in recent years. Or maybe not... It’s quite possible that you can still retire as planned…and maybe even retire earlier than expected. How? By retiring overseas... A foreign retirement isn’t for everyone, of course. Family obligations may be an issue for some people. Others might not be comfortable in a place where they don’t speak the language. But if you’re the adventuresome type…or if you’ve dreamed of living in an exotic location– maybe on a sultry tropical beach, in a pristine mountain hideaway, or in a sophisticated, culturally rich city–with better weather and a lower cost of living, retirement overseas may be for you. If you dream of moving overseas, you probably look forward to a low-stress, affordable lifestyle. It’s likely to be a healthier lifestyle, too. Here are some reasons why....
Others take up a new activity once they move.
Warm climate Most of us dream of retiring someplace warm. Snow and cold are things we gladly leave behind with our old 9-to-5 lives. And when the weather is warm and sunny, it’s easy to spend more time outside in the fresh air. Before you know it, you may ease into an active lifestyle with lots of exercise…which health experts agree is key to keeping us looking and feeling young. Some expats actually choose an overseas destination because they can practice a favorite sport there, such as golf, hiking or fishing.
Of course, in warm weather it’s also tempting to lie by the pool and just do nothing. That’s okay, too—it lowers all that unhealthy stress.
s
If you’re near the sea, for instance, swimming or strolling the beach may become part of your new routine. If you live in a city, you may soon be walking to shops and markets, or just exploring your new home town on foot. When adventure or fresh discoveries lie around every corner, long walks don’t feel like exercise. Healthy eats With a warm climate comes a long growing season for fruits and vegetables. Expats often praise the quality and freshness of the produce they can buy locally. You can choose to eat junk food if you want. But fresh, exotic produce can tempt you to eat more healthily. If you do, your health—not to mention your taste buds—will thank you.
Social life Fresh air and sunshine can also help you make friends. (Health experts say that social networking helps us live longer, too.) Ever stayed home from a social event because you couldn’t face a cold, wet night out? In your new warm-weather home, you’re more likely to ask, “Where’s the party?” and enjoy the evening stroll there and back.

House Price Gap Widens Between Big City Neighbourhoods
The gap in house prices between the most and least expensive districts of Spain’s largest cities has increased since the crisis began and the price differences in some cases have almost quadrupled. For example, according to a recent report prepared by property portal idealista.com, it would be 243% more expensive to buy a home in the most exclusive neighborhood in Madrid than in the cheapest district. Specifically, to live in the Salamanca district of Madrid you would have to shell out an average of 4,390 euros per square metre, while in the Villaverde district it would cost about 1,279 euros per metre. In turn, in the city of Barcelona, the
price gap is very significant between the Les Corts district, 146% more expensive with a price of 4,265 euros per square metre, and the cheapest zone of Nou Barris, where the price per square metre stands at 1,732 euros. At the peak of the housing bubble, during the third quarter of 2006, Barcelona’s most exclusive district was only 45% more expensive than the cheapest, while in Madrid during the fourth quarter of 2006 the difference was only 68%. In this regard, the head of research for the property portal, Fernando Encinar, explained that this is due to “the upward craze” which caused
the housing bubble in these two big cities and thereby led to the poorest neighbourhoods being the most affected. “The correction brought about by the bursting of the bubble has revealed that not all markets overheated in the same way and the declines from the maximum values in the cheaper districts have been much more pronounced, reaching a situation that better represents the reality of those markets”, said Encinar. In the city of Barcelona the fall from the peak in prices was 33.3%, while in the most expensive areas, such as Les Corts or Sarria Sant Gervasi prices fell by 24.6% and 33.8%, respectively,
and at the lower end, districts like Nou Barris (-55.4%) and Sant Andreu (-53.4%), had their prices reduced by more than half. El Economista reported that the situation is similar in Madrid, with an average fall in the city of 29% from the highs. The differences between the districts are notable as in Salamanca, Retiro or Chamartín prices have dropped between 21% and 27.2%, while in other districts they have been cut by more than half: Villaverde (-58.3%), Puente de Vallecas (-57.2%), Usera (-54.6%), Latina (-51.8%) and Carabanchel (-51.3%). bank holidays and weakness in the construction sector for the fall, but said “geopolitical factors” may also have had an effect. German think tank Ifo said it thought both the Ukraine crisis and the impact on oil prices by the insurgency in Iraq were factors concerning German businesses. Dekabank economist Andreas Scheuerle said May’s fall was a “massive disappointment”. “Even if some of this is down to missing days at work... and might be recovered later, there was simply not the momentum in the second quarter,” he added. In the first quarter, Germany’s economy grew by 0.8% but it is expected to see a slowdown in the second quarter. Read more on: www.bbc.com

the storyteller by Jodi Picoult
“I wrote this book because stories matter, and there are six million people who did not have the opportunity to tell theirs.”(Picoult) Some stories need to be told and retold. Can someone who’s committed truly heinous acts ever atone with subsequent good behaviour? Put another way-should you offer forgiveness to someone if you aren’t the party who was wronged? Can we or should we forgive the unforgivable? This harrowing and unforgettable journey through the Holocaust was inspired by Simon Wiesenthal’s book The Sunflower. He was a prisoner in a Nazi concentration camp, brought to the deathbed of an SS soldier who wanted to confess to and be forgiven by a Jew. From this, Picoult explored whether decades later the same request made to a Jewish prisoner’s granddaughter would have the same moral conundrum over genocide victims and their perpetrators. This is the dilemma faced by Sage Singer, from New Hampshire where the story is set, one of many storytellers but it is Minka’s story which dominates the novel and will leave a lasting impression, believe me! As part of her research Picoult spoke to a group of Holocaust survivors as well as relying on witness testimony from the Nuremberg trials of transcripts of Nazis who had been captured by the Department of Justice. Minka, Sage’s grandmother is based on several people that the writer interviewed. It adds realism and makes her experiences powerful and unforgettable. Sage is 25 years of age and was involved in a car accident that seriously
injured her mother and left Sage with facial scars. She felt like a monster with an eyelid that drooped “raw and red, a jagged lightning bolt splitting the symmetry of my face.” They were silver, ruched, rippling her cheek and brow like the “neck of a silver purse.” Her father had died from a heart attack when Sage was 19 and her mother died 3 years later. She seemed isolated from her sisters believing that they blamed her for her mother’s death so the only person she loved was Minka, a survivor from the concentration camps where so many people were brutally murdered. She had been attending a grief counselling group for 3 years: Helping Hands, aptly called. She was the only one from the original group and came for punishment not healing. Sage was still traumatised by her mother’s death referring to it as something that “still feels like a sword has been run through my ribs every time I think of her.” Before the accident she was shy, after it she became reclusive. A new member, Josef Weber joined the group and befriended Sage. He has gained a reputation as being a saint by the locals. Sage’s boss, Mary refers to him as everyone’s adoptive cuddly grandfather. He coached basketball and taught German at the high school. He lived in Canada for 22 years before moving to New Hampshire. But he was weighed down by a guilty conscience and a strong desire to die. He chose to befriend Sage knowing that she is from a Jewish family although not a practising Jew. He was a Nazi officer responsible for killing thousands of innocent Jews. “There is a reason God has kept me alive for this long. He wants me to feel
braben’s blog... Shopping Advice I looked at the date and decided I’d better get a move on, so this week the topic is Christmas. I’m nothing if not cutting edge and Christmas is on its way-ish! I don’t know about anyone else, but each year I am faced with the same problem. What can I buy my wife that’s both unusual and something she really wants. Last year I was convinced I’d cracked it-the best present ever in the whole universe. Strangely enough, Helen didn’t seem to appreciate it. I was amazed, I was sure that Dukla Prague’s away strip would be just perfect. You live and learn. And this is why I’ve spent hours on my research this year and I want to share with you the results of my work. I wouldn’t want anyone else wasting good money on a new set of cricket pads, only for that present to go unused. Criminal. I can tell you’re dying to find the answer to the question that’s been on your mind since December 26 last year. Wait no longer because I’ve got two suggestions and although neither run the Dukla Prague kit close, I’ve tried to do
my best. The first one is…a key. I can hear groaning now but really, it isn’t what it seems. This isn’t just any key, it’s a handmade, solid gold key encrusted with over 3 carats of diamonds. I know what you’re thinking, and you’re right. It’s not in the same league as those cricket pads, but I suppose it might please someone. There is a downside though. The key is only made for a top of the range Mercedes, so you may have to shell out a touch more for the car too. A small price to pay for the excitement it will bring on Christmas morning-wouldn’t you agree? If that doesn’t ring your Christmas bells, how about a jet card? With this little gem you’ll be buying luxury travel on private jets wherever you want to go. No more queues at the check in. No more journeys with your knees welded into the bent position. From now on it is A-list travel-for only 4000 Euros an hour. Look, if you’re not sure about this then Christmas isn’t ruined. I know a place where you can get a genuine Tranmere Rovers strip from the 1966-67 season. Now be honest, doesn’t that beat a measly private jet?

what THEY felt. They prayed for their lives but had no control over them; I pray for my death but have no control over it.” He has had cancer t w i c e , survived a car crash and had a broken hip but he was still alive and in his nin e t ie s. He asked Sage to help him die, to carry out assisted suicide. No matter how much he wanted to die he tells her he cannot. He was like the Wandering Jew, Ahasuerus, cursed to walk the earth until the Second Coming, for telling Christ to walk faster. Not an easy decision for anyone. First Sage listened to his family history and his associations with the Hitler Youth Movement before becoming an SS officer. “I convinced myself I was of pure race, Aryan. That I deserved things others did not, simply by the accident of my birth…that hubris that arrogance.” In 1942 he was sent to Annus Mundi, the asshole of the world, known to us as Auschwitz where he met up with his younger brother Franz. Sage knew that

Minka was a survivor from the same camp and felt extremely uncomfortable with the prospect of her grandmother coexisting in a world with a former Nazi who might well have tortured and threatened her. “How could someone who murdered innocent people look so…so… ordinary?” Sage knows that she needs to hear Minka’s story whilst she is still alive to understand the horrors committed by the likes of Josef before she can assist in his suicide. One final requirement is that she has to forgive him for his gross wrongdoings before he dies. According to Judaism the only people with the capacity to forgive are the ones to whom the wrong was done and of course, they were dead. And it is Minka’s story, the one about monsters and vampires that parallels her life under Nazi rule and kept her alive as well as the real horror of how she experienced inhumanity. It is an emotional and compelling tale and will leave a painful reminder of 6 million Jews who were killed by the Nazis. Unforgettable. Publisher: Hodder and Stoughton. watermelon Big, sloppy slices of watermelon served at a picnic table are the quintessential summer snack—sweet enough to be dessert but, as several recent studies remind us, good for our health as well. (And only 84 calories per wedge!) 1. It soothes sore muscles. According to a new study in the Journal of Agricultural Food and Chemistry, drinking watermelon juice before a hard workout helped reduce athletes’ heart rate and next-day muscle soreness. That’s because watermelon is rich in an amino acid called L-citrulline, which the body converts to L-arginine, an essential amino acid that helps relax blood vessels and improve circulation. The study’s seven participants, all men, were given 17 ounces (500 mL) of either natural watermelon

2. It helps heart health. Postmenopausal women experienced improved cardiovascular health after six weeks of taking commercially available watermelon extract supplements containing citrulline and arginine, according to a study published earlier this year by Florida State University physiologist Arturo Figueroa. And in a 2012 study—also led by Figueroa—such supplements helped alleviate high blood pressure in obese, middle-aged adults. (Not surprisingly, he’s received two grants from the Watermelon Promotion Board.)

3. It could be a natural Viagra. Improved circulation can benefit more than just the heart, as at least one watermelon researcher has pointed out. But you’d probably have to eat an awful lot to achieve the desired effect--and eating too much could cause unfortunate side effects, since watermelon has long had a reputation as a natural diuretic. 4. It’s rich in vitamins and minerals, but low in calories. Given its name, you might assume the fruit has little nutritional value—and it is more than 90 percent water. But a 10-ounce (300-mL) wedge of watermelon packs in about one-third of the recommended daily value of vitamins A and C, as well as a modest amount of potassium (9 percent of the daily value). (Watch: Cranberry Harvest) 5. It could even combat cancer. Watermelon is among the best dietary sources of lycopene, an antioxidant linked to both the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer, although scientists are still investigating the details of that connection. juice, watermelon juice enriched with additional citrulline, or a placebo drink an hour before their workouts. Interestingly, the natural juice was just as effective as the enriched juice. The researchers also determined that intestinal cells can absorb more citrulline from watermelon juice than from citrulline supplements, especially when the juice is unpasteurized.

Apparently, according to Reader’s Digest Dropped Wallet Test, Helsinki, Finland, is the most honest city in the world. Reader’s Digest researchers always seem to me to be thorough to a fault, so if they were prepared to go to 19 different cities in the world and ‘drop’ 12 wallets each in different places in each city, then I am happy to accept their findings and applaud Helsinki and its residents, right down to the last Finn. However, I have a feeling that it is not a Finn who is currently top of my honesty pops – this opinion is based on the fact that I have not yet met a Finnish national is Spain - I have a feeling that it is a fellow Brit who

is currently in top spot. I had mislaid, through absence of mind, 2 fly swats and 2 red bras in the aptly named Scrumptious in Albox. I had diligently searched my house and the car, and had returned to the scene of the mislaying, but to no avail – they were gone! I comforted myself with the hope that they would Just Turn Up; many things that I mislay do, probably because I am hopeless at looking for things – there are absolutely no sniffer dog nucleotides in my biological make-up! And in a way, they did! I was bemoaning my loss in post-Pilates class conversation with Ann from Albanchez, who volunteers in the MACS shop in Albox, when she said ‘Somebody brought in a bag with 2 fly swats, and left it on the counter. We kept it back, in case it was lost property.’ Was this co-incidence, or a red herring? Whichever, next morning, as Big Ben struck 9 (10 here in Spain)
I was outside the MACS shop door. ‘Have you got a bag with 2 fly swats in it?’ I urgently enquired. They don’t fluster easily in MACS, and with smooth efficiency the bag was located - but was it my bag? Were those my fly swats? I didn’t want to purloin someone else’s 15 cent fly killers; I needed to verify the contents. ‘Has it got 2 red bras in it?’ I queried the gentleman holding the bag. Without missing a beat or with any alteration in his expression of benign calm he handed me the bag and replied ‘I couldn’t possibly comment.’ Thus I am reunited with my missing shopping; I am able to decimate flies while maintaining a fully clad frontage, due to the presence of mind of the MACS staff, and the unknown person who salvaged my lost property! Thanks to you all.
alqueria El combate de lucha libre John MacDonald (El Sordo) - www.caratacus.eu
There was to be a grand wrestling match in Alqueria. A combatant from each of the barrios would contend for the title of Alquerian All Comers Champion. To organise such an event in a town with a potent barrio divide and intolerant hatred for the opposing faction may seem like a well planned disaster waiting to happen. The powers that be thought it would allow barrio rivalry to be confined to the ring and away from the streets. The naïve fools. The Alquerian weapons of choice tended to be cobblestones, bricks, bottles and fire-bombs. Hand to hand combat was considered too dangerous so outside wrestlers had to be recruited. Only the meanest and fittest fighters were head-hunted by the respective barrios. They were given Alquerian citizenship, something which can be purchased reasonably cheaply and briefed in the ways of the Pueblo. Manuela took an active part in the selection of the Hill People’s champion. She spent quite a time interviewing each personally. She was very thorough and enthusiastic in her singular selection technique. Santiago Spleen Ripper Gonzales was to represent the Hill People while Ángel Granny Masher Tierno was the chosen one of the Newcomers. Both wrestlers left a grisly reputation of broken limbs and chewed ears in their wake. Loco Paco regarded the two fighters with an academic interest and threw morsels of food to them. It wasn’t until he heard them speak that he realised they weren’t some exotic variety of hairless Orang-utan but human. Paco was rightly disappointed and turned his attention once more to his imaginary rodent friend, Bert. Come the day of the contest and the Town’s Plaza is packed with what seems
like the entire population of Alqueria. The square is regaled in garlands and bunting. The wrestling ring stands ready and the crowd have already started exchanging jibes and insults. Enter the protagonists, lumbering, knuckles scraping the flagstones. The crowd go wild. Things more tangible than insults are now thrown, a number of supporters are felled by well aimed projectiles. The ring is torn apart and its planking used as weapons. All in all it is a well planned disaster that had an inevitability Nostradamus would have found easy meat. The two wrestlers took refuge in the Bar la Casa Devante where they discovered they were once close friends. They had shared the same room while on an advanced grunting course organised by the World Wrestling Council. They sat chatting while bedlam reigned outside. The philosophical irony of the situation seemed somehow quite normal in Alqueria.

From Frédéric Chopin to John Lennon By Air
We were in Italy recently and I was impressed with the way the Italians immortalise their heroes by naming airports after them. Our first experience of this was in Venice, where we encountered the Marco Polo International Airport. Then it was on to Rome and Leonardo Da Vinci. In fact I discovered that the Italians have gone bonkers in this respect, with Florence, Bologna, Pisa, Genoa, Parma, Bergamo, Naples, Rimini and Perugia, all naming their airports after great Italians. From artists to explorers and scientists to saints - and in Palermo, two Mafia fighting judges – their names have all been perpetuated in this way. Being an Englishman, I am not familiar with this practice and it made me wonder how many other airports around the globe, bear the names of national figures. If I had heard that Corvera Airport had actually opened for business, I couldn’t have been more surprised - there are literally hundreds of them. We are all familiar with John F Kennedy in New York and Charles de Gaulle in Paris, but there are airports named after composers such as Chopin in Warsaw, Poland; Prokofiev at Donetsk in the Ukraine, and Liszt in Budapest, Hungary. There are a plethora of military leaders from Shaka the great Zulu warrior king in Durban, to Chinggis Khan International Airport (Genghis Khan to you and me) in Ulan Bator, Mongolia and predictably the Ajaccio Napoleon
By Colin Bird :
badbirdnow@gmail.com
Bonaparte Airport in Corsica. There is even a sprinkling of film stars, like the Indiana County Jimmy Stewart Airport and John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana, California . . . “The hell it is!” The church is also represented, with two Pope John Paul II’s; one in Krakow Poland and the other in the Portuguese Azores. And Mother Teresa at the Tirana International Airport Nene Tereza in Albania. Then as you might expect, more presidents, prime ministers and premiers than you can shake a stick at, with the aforementioned JFK having three airports bearing his name – New York City; Ashland, Wisconsin and surprisingly, La Paz, Bolivia. Bob Hope in Burbank; Sherpa Tenzing and Edmund Hilary in Nepal, Federico Felini in Rimini - the list goes on and on. And amongst the famous and grand a few puzzling ones like the Brockville Regional Tackaberry Airport in Ontario Canada, which is named after one George Tackaberry - the bloke whose company resurfaced the runway. We in the UK on the other hand stick with the utterly uninspiring handles like Heathrow, Gatwick, and East Midlands. We all know that the likes of Newcastle, Manchester, Luton and Southampton airports are in or near to those cities – it’s obvious – so let’s have some imagination shown here. I would like to start a campaign therefore, to re-christen these and other British airports with the names of some of our greatest historical figures. I mean, it’s not as if we are short on choice. It’s true that we have the John Lennon airport in Liverpool. A great tribute to a great musician and why not, after all New Orleans has the Louis Armstrong Airport. We
also have the George Best Belfast City Airport and the Robin Hood Airport in Doncaster. This is a good start but much more should be done. Besides in Robin Hood’s case, he was pretty much a fictional figure who almost certainly did not exist in the way he has been portrayed by the likes of Errol Flynn and Richard Greene. He probably stole from the Salvation Army as well as the rich and I bet his men never washed or wore poncy Lincoln green, and were anything but merry except when they hit ye Olde Ale. So what about some suggestions? Here are a few of my own. There is always going to be controversy when using politicians’ names, but hey, how could we not re-name Heathrow: London Winston Churchill Airport. And at the heart of our capital, how about London City Christopher Wren. There is only one possible name for Birmingham, being so near to the Bards home town, and that surely has to be the Birmingham William Shakespeare International Airport. Similarly Norwich renamed after a city daughter -Elizabeth Fry. But it need not be a prerequisite that the figure concerned is born in the appropriate city, but where there is a strong connection this would be reason enough. For example: the Bristol Isembard Kingdom Brunel Airport. If you think that’s too much of a mouth full, then think yourself lucky you don’t live close to the M’Vengue El Hadj Omar Bongo Ondimba International Airport in Gabon! It could be decided by we the people and not only would it be a long overdue display of patriotism, but a signal to the world that here is a country that is proud of its history.

Marg Birtwistle did KO match-play battle in the singles. It was a tightly fought affair in which Ken managed to edge out Marg by eventually winning 3 and 2. Good luck to Ken in the semifinal & well done to Marg flying the flag for the fairer sex into such a late stage of the competition. NTP’s went to Capt Steve Davis (6), John Aitchison (9), Steve Fleet (13) & Mick Roscoe (17). Phil Bache picked up this week’s guest prize. The 2 special awards for the best nine but not in the prizes went to Jacquie Rust (20 on the front 9) & Mike Jordan (21 on the back 9). Top 4 in the bronze category were Norman McBride (34), John Parker (35), Keith Stevenson (36) & top score of the day with 44 points was Mick Roscoe who also picked up theColin Arkley Trophy to be held for 12mths. Silver’s winners were John Aitchison (36 C/B), Phil de Lacy (36 C/B), Noel Bannon (37) & Alan McDonald in top spot with 38. Gold division was a tight result - Colin Rust in 4th (36) then three 37’s had to be separated by count-back which meant Theo Boelhouwer was 3rd, Capt Steve Davis was 2nd leaving Barry Roehrig in first place due to a tremendous 22 on the back which included a birdie and an eagle! Well done to all those in the prizes & don’t forget to keep in touch with www. smgs.org for all society news or simply give Phil a quick buzz on 966 774 197 for any details of future Wednesday meetings.
San Miguel Golf Society This week San Miguel Golf Society, the longest established society in the area, paid its monthly visit to the local course with similar credentials - Villamartin. Nearly forty golfers battled it out in Stableford format to go home with the very prestigious Colin Arkley Trophy , played for in memory of a past President & one of the earliest members of SMGS. As the years keep rolling by & the membership keeps growing it’s not surprising how many of the more longstanding members still remember Colin’s tremendous enthusiasm & input which played such an important role in laying the foundations & principles on which today’s society is built...... long may his memory live on. The course was in great condition & together with the slightly cooler temperature, good scores looked very likely. We were not disappointed as many below par scores were carded but one popular member exceeded even his wildest ambitions by shooting 6 points more than his nearest rival. Before we go into the full results it should be mentioned that the Liverpool duo of past-Captains Ken Flaherty &

Smith with 28 points. The “Roy” for the most shots played went to Dave Bartram who played quite well but had more than his share of bad luck. The Best Guest was Scots lad Gordon McGregor Jnr .The winners of the Nearest the Pins were Eddie Scott, Ann Hobbs and David James who after a shoulder op, which has kept him out all year, returned with a vengence and a birdie which also won him the sizeable 2’s pot. Well done David. There were a number of games in the annual knock-out competition with Tony Patterson overwhelming Anne Hobbs, and a number of very close finishes with Paul Flanaghan ending up victorious against Norman Lewis and Rod Day likewise against Terry Smith. The battle between 2 close friends Roy Westlake and Victor Dew went to the wire with Roy winning it on the 18th in a nail biting finish. After the game the players returned to the Quesada Country Club for the presentations and a well earned drink or two and a tasty hot and a cold buffet kindly laid on by mine hosts Dave and Anita. The next game is at Alicante on Wednesday 16 July.
Quesada Golf Society Last Wednesday the society played at Alenda which is a course suited to players of all abilities. The course was in excellent condition. It was a hot summer’s day with everyone coming prepared with sun-cream and plenty of liquid refreshment. The game was an individual Stableford competition with 2 divisions with the Mid-Season Trophy up for grabs for the overall winner. The players in Buggy no.37 who will remain nameless appeared to be competing for the “shortest drive”, not round the course but from off the tee. One managed a 2 foot drive only to be surpassed by a 2 inch drive off the tee. The winner of the Gold Division with 32 points was Eddie Scott who pipped his close but not bitter rival Roy Kavanagh on C/B. In third place with 31 points was Darryll Wright or Daryyl Wright as was printed on the start sheet. In the Silver Division the winner was recently joined member, Ian Fogarty with a very creditable 31 points followed by “smokin” Tony Patterson with 30 points and “steady” Terry
Anyone in the Quesada area looking to join a very friendly golf society and play golf once a fortnight at a wide variety of courses at very reasonable cost, should contact the membership secretary Les Pancott on 966716723.
Families need versatile vehicles To that end the Volkswagen Tiguan is an ideal solution. This sports utility vehicle shares similar looks to the larger Tourag. The test model is the 2-litre diesel 4 Motion Match finished in metallic dark blue. As with all VWs it feels solid and dependable from the clunking of the doors to the high quality interior. A growing family such as ours does come with a good deal of paraphernalia even if just venturing out on a day trip. Our tandem pushchair always has to accompany us if we are going to have a relaxing and enjoyable time. And it fits snugly in the boot although the rear parcel shelf has to be removed to make this possible. Incidentally that sizeable boot is ideal for little daughter Heidi (1) when she needs her nappy changing. The floor is just the right height to enable to me to quickly change her without hurting my back. Also when it rains the boot lid acts as useful protection. The rear seats can be moved forward which gives about six inches more space in the boot, if required. Harriett (3) finds the fold up picnic tables particularly useful; ideal not only for eating but also for Lego. In terms of roominess it scores well. But it definitely would benefit from a panoramic glass roof as indeed do other vehicles in this sector; I’m thinking of offerings from
Peugeot and Nissan. Without it, it is a bit dark inside especially on a dull day. However, when the temperatures warm up – as is the case with Britain’s temperamental unpredictable weather - the air conditioning capably brings the temperature down from uncomfortably hot to pleasantly cool in around five minutes after setting off. To drive this 4WD crossover is enjoyable with plenty of power in second and third gear, although if it is changed into third gear when the revs are too low, performance is weak. It’s a vehicle that when driven properly is a delight. That diesel unit, which is a bit rattly, is pleasingly economical and the six speed gearbox is generally smooth, although on a few occasions a little notchy. Where you might expect to find the handbrake there is simply a switch because this model has a modern electronic handbrake. There is also another switch called Auto Hold. It’s fast from 0 to 60 mph so it does make up for any delay. The engine stop/start can be relied upon to kick in whenever the Tiguan comes to a halt. On top of the already impressively long standard equipment list, which includes automatic lights and wipers, as well as ‘Park Assist’, Volkswagen’s excellent
self-parking system that squeezes the Tiguan into spaces just 1.1m longer than itself, a number of extra features have been ushered in. The camera that appears in the centre of the dash when reversing is useful, making it an easy car to manoeuvre into awkward spots. My wife feels that the seating position should be higher up because she feels low down. In terms of road presence it fairs well compared to other high end
offerings from BMW and Audi and is certainly an alternative to Land Rover’s Freelander. Facts at a glance New price range: £21,700 - £31,770 Top speed: 120mph 0-60mph: 9.9secs Power: 138bhp Economy: 53mpg Watch the video at www.testdrives.biz By Tim Saunders

Torrevieja cricket Torrevieja CC 63 for 4 La Manga Kings 62 for 10.
Torrevieja won the toss and elected to field, a decision that soon proved correct. After 18 overs, Kings had only scores 19 runs. This was due to some accurate bowling and excellent fielding. The first wicket fell in the 19th over with a smart run out. The following batsmen decided that they needed to push the score along but wickets fell regularly with Michael Wareing exceptional with 5 wickets for 9 runs off 7 overs. Dean Scott’s 3 overs produced 1 wicket for 0 runs and with Lee Brown’s 11 overs yielding only 6 runs, Kings were all out for 62. When Torrevieja went in to bat, young Adam Alger must have had a desire to finish the game in as little a time as possible. He hit 10 off the first over, 15 in the second over but was out for 28 playing back to a ball that never got above ankle height. However, the mood was set and after Graham Simpson’s 15, and contributions from Ciaran Guichard and Mark Talbot, Torrevieja knocked off the runs in 17 overs. This win keeps Torrevieja challenging for top spot in the East and Central Cricket League. They have a break from league games now until August but are trying to organise a friendly game before then. As the summer starts to kick in with a vengeance , mad dogs and golfers go out in the midday sun , the mad dogs tend to go back to sleep but the golfers carry on and go out to play golf , most normal people take this time of the year to relax , laze around the pool nip down to the local bar or stroll along the sea front taking advantage of the sea breezes , but we golfers will not give up our weekly, monthly or how often we play fix . Last Friday 28 members and guests traveled to Roda Golf , the course was in excellent condition and a great test of golf , however one of our players did manage to break par scoring forty points or four under par , Graham Ball was our player not letting the course , fairways or the tricky greens put him off , I have to say well done Graham fantastic score , our handicap secretary said something similar using a chopping action with the side of his hand as he said it , obviously with this score Graham was our winner , not far behind him were Preston Ives and Bill Peters both scoring thirty five points but Bill took second place just beating Preston on a count back of the better back six as both players had equal back nines , our four nearest the pins were won by on the second hole Phil Harris , the seventh Graham Ball , John Chatham took the eleventh , and the ever popular result was George Holmes who won the thirteenth , Phil Pettican won the best back nine with Dave Pretty taking the better back nine Phil had sixteen points winning on a count back again on the last six holes , Dave had eighteen points again winning on better back six by count back , both players won but the best front and back nine scores were actually scored by Graham Ball , but as he had won first prize the prizes are awarded to the next in line , our prizes for were booze for the winning scores and sleeves of Callaway golf balls to our N T P s , our soccer card was won by Dave Pretty with Leeds . After our game 28 of us returned to the Mini Golf Bar in Quesada for the second time this week , the first time we held our biannually dinner there and on both occasions we were really well looked after by the staff at the bar , which has an excellent reputation for providing good food and drinks at sensible prices . Man United unveil new kit
Manchester United unveil new kit to kick-off Louis van Gaal era at OId Trafford Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie and Shinji Kagawa pose in new strip It is the first home kit released under new Van Gaal era at United Chevrolet are United’s official shirt sponsor for the upcoming season United will wear strip for first time on July 23 in friendly against LA Galaxy. Manchester United have unveiled their new kit for the 2014/15 season. England striker Wayne Rooney was at the centre of the photo, flanked by Old Trafford team-mates Robin van Persie and Shinji Kagawa. The collarless shirt, designed by Nike, features white on the sleeves and a hint of black, and marks the first strip released during Louis van Gaal’s tenure of the Old Trafford club. The traditional white collar returns for the new campaign, while the words ‘youth, courage and greatness’ are embossed in the neck of the shirt. Rooney and Co will wear the shirt for the first time later this month when they take on LA Galaxy as part of their pre-season tour of America. The home strip is the first to bear the Chevrolet logo and Old Trafford fans will be hoping that it brings the club better results than they experienced last term. United finished seventh, 24 points adrift of Premier League champions Manchester City after a nightmare campaign which saw David Moyes, who replaced the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson, sacked less than 12 months into his six-year deal.

Ruby’s Golf Society
Ruby’s fun day found us playing at our home course El Plantio, where the greens were in excellent condition but the fairways are being repaired and were a bit sandy. However team vice Nigel Wright, Mick Johnson, Graham Hall and David Trotman were able to manage the conditions and guided their Harlequin ball (double points) around the course for team victory, the only team to bring the ball home. Other winners on the day were nearest the pins on par 3’s Nigel Wright, Jim McCarthy and Bill (I have a serious injury) Malcolm. Nearest the pin in two was Buck Taylor gold division winner was Nigel Wright and silver division lets keep it in the family went to wife Theresa, overall winner on the day was Nigel Wright. Back at Ruby’s bar Back at Ruby’s bar much banter took place about the serious injury (scratched knee) to Mr Malcolm, before the football card was won by Colin Philips. Our next outing is at Alenda on the 18th July anyone wishing to join us for this or any other game can contact us at rubysgolf@yahoo.co.uk.

El Plantio 2 Golf Society
This week we found ourselves a little light on the ground with only 14 players, it was decided that we would play a Greensomes competition, with each team being made up of 2 players, one player with a low handicap and one with a high handicap. Some excellent scores were recorded, so no surprises there. Two members who shall remain nameless struggled at first as they had been involved with friends from down under the previous evening, where they tried to create a shortage of wine in the Alicante region, it’s amazing how difficult golf can be when the ball refuses to stay still. Well I think that was their excuse, anyway. The results this week: Nearest the pin hole 2: Martin Rickman, Hole 6: Henry Mellor 3rd place Roger Marshall & Rod Loveday H/cap 11.98 with a nett 51.02 2nd place Ian Henderson & Lawrence Wanty H/cap 11.34 with a nett 49.66 1st place Kenny Reddington & Bryan Watson H/cap 17.96, with a nett 44.04 The next competition is on Tuesday 8th July at El Plantio. Put your name on the list in the club house by Sunday, if you would like to play. Be sure to be there well before 9am on Tuesday. The Society meets on Tuesdays, Fridays & Sundays to play on El Plantio 2 par 3 course, new members are welcome to join the El Plantio Golf Society, where special membership price is available for anyone who joins the Society. Visitors are always welcome, contact Ian Henderson, Tel: 966716616 or Mob: 636 116 230
T.M.G.S. Match report Las Colinas 2/7/14
Press Report for Eurogolf for 2013/4 season. We have now come to the end of yet another Eurogolf/ TOFFS season. The annual competitions have now been completed together with the Club Championship and the divorce-somes competition. We played our last routine game on 26 June, with the other competitions being played the first week of July. The results of the annual competitions were as follows: Men’s Eclectic Trophy: Ian R Pegg (63) Ladies Eclectic Trophy: Jan Shorley (57) Laura Davis Trophy: Chris Stanley Nick Faldo Trophy: Jim Weston Club Singles: Terry Sharley Greensomes Pairs: Sue & Mike Gillett Ladies Pairs: Phyllis Venables & Chris Stanley Club Pairs: Morag & Ian Turner Senior Singles: Bob Buckeridge Ladies Strokeplay: Sue Gillett Men’s Strokeplay: David Blanchette Pegasus Trophy: Franz Berndt Invicta Trophy: Angelika Berndt The Club Championship is played over 2 days and the results were as follows: Best Gross: John Barraclough (164) 2nd Bill Martin (167) Best Nett: Keith Wright (147)
and just a point further back on 32 points was Mick Kennedy, Per Skarnes took 4th place with 29 points. In the Gold category Alan Rickers needed only 30 points to take 4th place, and big hitting Matt Taylor took 3rd with 32 points, Dag Lovas again figured in the prizes with a very credible 35 points, but the inform man of the moment did it again, yes Bill Starkey finished top of the shop with level par 36 points. Photo: Gold category winners. Next week we will be making our monthly visit to La Finca, so if you would like a game just call the match sec. on 661524101 or visit our web site www.tmgs.org
On a lighter note the ‘divorce-somes’ competition was played on Saturday 5 July. This is played over 9 holes and it is the responsibility of whoever wins to organise the following year and decide on the format. This year it was greensomes with a twist. Instead of the pair deciding on the best ball to take, the opposition had the job of deciding which ball should be used. This resulted in partners having to play from some unusual spots. This was a fun competition enjoyed by 10 couples and was followed by a meal. The winners were as follows, as you will see due to the format there was not a lot of high scoring: Winner: Sue & Mike Gillett 10 points Runner’s UpCindi Green & Gordon Bourne (c/b) The Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank members for their support during the year and hope they will continue to support the new committee when the season restarts in September. Hope you all have a good summer.

With a late morning start our members could have prepared themselves for the task ahead of what would be the battle at Las Colinas! There is much said about Las Colinas, how players enjoy it and how good it is to play, well today was not one of those days. We were pleasantly surprised when the marshal appeared in the bar and informed us that we could begin our 2 tee start 30 minutes early. Over the years of playing on the Costa Blanca I always get a little suspicious when good news comes! Sure enough we only had to wait until we reached the 4 hole to find that a whole army of machinery were busy digging up the 4th fairway and beyond (hollowtyning). Now we know that this has to be done, but it would be nice to be informed beforehand and just to make it a little more arduous the yellow tee markers were now situated on the “white” tee boxes. It’s not surprising then to find that the scores were not great, except for a visitor who apparently in Ireland plays off 12 h’cap but managed to score 41 points off it today, well done Derek Kenna, we will welcome you to your new h’cap next week at La Finca! With a few committee members missing this week, a big thank you goes to Vice Captain, John Eyre for manning the desk. The 5 nearest the pins were all taken this week, Hole 5 Arne Hansson, hole7, I’ll just bounce it of a few trees George Smith, hole 10 Mike Fearnehough, Hole14 Paul Fairclough and hole 17 John Eyre. Last week no one won the 2’s pot, so it’s been rolled over to this week making it a massive €63 up for grabs. The 3 lucky winners were, John Eyre, Dag Lovas and Paul Fairclough. Top score of 34 points in the Silver category went to Roger Nilsen, 2nd went to John Hillier with 33 points
Today Thursday 3rd July, we had our “Captains day” at Vistabella Golf. 38 members and guests turned out for a wonderful days golf. Thanks to some sponsorship from Vistabella golf, a great deal of organising by captain Tony Macmillan and secretary Steve Hamilton, not to forget a lovely after game buffet at Cafe Uno , set out for us by Pete and Lisa Bonsor and staff. Everyone went home with a prize at the end of the day, whether their individual game was good or bad. So all told we all enjoyed the benefits of our society. I have only listed the top three winners of each category and nearest the pins etc, otherwise the page would be full of names and numbers. So here are the top prize winners:- Gold Category. 1st D.Titchen - 40pts. 2nd G.Benson - 37pts. 3rd A.Douglas - 32pts. Nearest the pin - G.Pope. Nearest the pin in 2 - J.Pedersen. Silver Category. 1st B.Wood - 39pts. 2nd L.George - 36pts. 3rd T.Macmillan - 32pts. Nearest the pin -A.Atkinson. Nearest the pin in 2 - H.Hunter. Extra 4 holes. Gold and Silver. Nearest the pin - A.Douglas / D.Bishop. Longest drive - R.Rogers / L.George. Nearest the pin in 2 - T.Rogers / B.Wright. Nearest the pin in 3 G.Williams / T.Macmillan. Congratulations to Dave Titchen the overall winner of captains day with 40 pts. Next week on Wednesday 9th July is our AGM at Cafe Uno 8pm sharp.
