longest established spa dealer in this part of spain Spas from 2500€ Large Selection of Used & Ex-display Spas ACCIDENTS at two Benidorm theme parks have left an 18-year-old man dead and a four-year-old critical in hospital. The Icelandic teen, who was on the ride known as the ‘Inferno’ at Terra Mítica with his father, brother and a friend, fell out of his seat in mid-air when his harness came undone. A woman sitting near him who witnessed the entire incident said her own harness had become tangled and fairground staff had trouble unblocking it, and added that the one the deceased wore came open when the ride was in motion. The ‘Inferno’ is a rollercoaster which spins round and upside down at the same time, and it is thought the young tourist landed on his head. He was still alive when he was lifted into the ambulance, but died within minutes after his heart and breathing stopped. Terra Mítica has contacted the firm which manufactured the ‘Inferno’ and opened an inquiry into how the fatal fall happened. Management at the park say all rides

come with the proper official safety certificates, and that the harnesses are linked to an electrical locking system which means they cannot come undone whilst the apparatus is in motion and, if one did so, it would automatically stop the ride. Terra Mítica opened in the year 2000, and this is the first time a fatal accident has occurred. On the same day, a four-year-old Russian boy on holiday with his family suffered head injuries in a fall when climbing a statue at the entrance to the Benidorm zoo, Terra Natura. He was rushed to Alicante General Hospital and is said to be in a critical condition. Terra Natura’s management stresses that the statues have clear signs on them in several languages warning visitors not to climb them. The park has sought out emergency accommodation for the child’s parents and provided an interpreter for them at the hospital. Source: www.thinkspain.com/

Lions install a “new “ President

The Torrevieja Costa Lions Club installed a “ not so new “ President this week at their annual celebration dinner, held in the Marabu Lounge on Lemon Tree road near Quesada. The out going President Janette Bennett thanked all the Club members and guests for their huge support during her two year tenure as President. Before handing over the gavel and badge of office Janette had two final tasks to perform. The first was to present a cheque for 500.00 euros to Pauline and Derrick Howarth representing the Vecinos de San Miguel Archangel. This donation was made from part of the funds raised by the Club at the JB Brass and Barbershop Harmonisers concert held earlier in the year at Teatro Municipal Torrevieja, the remaining funds will be donated when the Theatre releases the box office takings to the Lions Club. The second very pleasurable task for Janette was to present Lions Club Charter member Peter Long with a Melvin Jones Fellowship Award in recognition of his commitment to the Club and Service to the community of Torrevieja and

surrounding areas. Peter has served as a Director of the Club for many years, principally as Club Secretary and more latterly as Treasurer. The Melvin Jones Fellowship Award is the highest accolade available to any Club member and is only awarded in exceptional circumstances. Janettes’ final task was to pass on the Gavel and badge of office to the “new” Lion President Iain Bennett. Iain who was previously Lion President from 2010 -12 , on receipt spoke enthusiastically about his hopes for the future and introduced the new board of Club Directors to the assembled members and guests. Iains’ first duty as President was similar to that of the outgoing President, Iain presented Janette with a Melvin Jones Fellowship Award in recognition not only of her two years as President but

also having served as Community Service Director, Treasurer and as Vice President of the Club. At the end of the Celebratory dinner and before the entertainment and dancing ensued, Iain invited Julie the owner of Marabu Lounge and Chef Theresa and all the staff to join them in the restaurant where Iain congratulated them all for the excellent meal and first class service they had provided, and on behalf of all the Lions and guests wished them every success with their new venture in Marabu Lounge. For more information about the Torrevieja Costa Lions Club and how to become a Lion member, go to www.torreviejacostalions. org or drop in to the Lions monthly meeting in Hotel Cabo Cervera, La Mata on the second Thursday of every month at 1930, where you will always be made welcome.

stage struck

When Ancient Greece came to the Beluga Theatre in San Fulgencio no one could have anticipated just how hilarious the show would be. Stage Struck did it again! Stella and her very able team and cast continue to amaze us with their professional and entertaining performances time after time. Ancient Greece was a tongue in cheek send up of the John Travolta and Olivia Newton John film Grease, but this time it was set in an old people’s retirement home. If you think that would be amazing, you would be right, in every sense of the word. Absolutely great, wonderful

Property Buying Resource Opens Spanish Office To Assist Foreign House-hunters

acting, great singing , all together a really superb night. The final fantastic gesture was the truly magnificent donation after the three night run, of 2.500 euros to the Alzheimer’s Association of Torrevieja. Matilde Sanchez, President was so grateful to Stagestruck for this very generous donation and thanked Stella and her team by presenting a Certificate of Appreciation from AFA. Stagestruck also made a donation to the School books fund of San Fulgencio which help to provide essential school books for struggling families.

The new, improved site will make researching a property purchase in Spain simpler, with impartial information on what steps to take and who to talk to for those who want to live the dream in Spain. The site also features experiences and insights from expats who have already made the leap to living abroad themselves, giving their own personal recommendations and sharing tips for the real ‘dos’ and ‘don’ts’ of buying property in and moving to Spain. This comes at a time when foreign interest in owning property in Spain – in particular, a holiday home on the Costa del Sol or Costa Blanca – is seeing a revival. According to the Spanish General Council of Notaries, demand from foreign buyers grew by 27.2 per cent in the first quarter of 2014 compared to 2013, with foreigners representing 19.4 per cent of the total sales market. Charles Purdy, Co-founder and Managing Director of parent company, the Overseas Guides Company, commented: “This is the first exciting step in the Overseas Guides Company’s international growth. We will continue to launch additional offices across a number of key countries this year and next, to provide both our clients and partners with a wider range of services across our country network.” Source: www.martcurrencyexchange.com

Benches and Chairs

Benches and chairs are important garden features because they literally allow us to sit and enjoy the garden. When I realized I didn’t have anywhere to relax in my own yard, I immediately went out and bought a lightweight wooden bench that I could easily move around my garden until I found the perfect spot for it. If you already know where you’d want a bench or chair in your yard, I recommend

www.soltimes.com torches give your garden that fun tropical feel. Christmas lights strung in trees or through arbors give a space some sparkling ambiance. And more expensive, inground systems highlight artwork, paths and plantings, giving you endless evenings to experience the wonders of moon gardens and night pollinators, such as giant hawkmoths.

Garden Art

Although I’m one of the last to admit there are other things to put in a garden besides plants, garden art can add a lot to your outdoor enjoyment, too. And the best part is that most art requires no maintenance. I want both beauty and function from art, and the way I get this is by incorporating beautiful furniture and structures – like arbors for vines and other climbing plants. So create an air of whimsy (and low maintenance) with fantastic and functional art.

Entertaining

Gardens are perfectly well and good in their own right, but sometimes you need a pat on the back for all your hard work. Create an excuse to invite people over for a garden party. Don’t worry about the weeds – focus on a small area of your garden or on a newly installed feature such as…oh, I don’t know…night lights! Keep the celebration simple. Focus on fresh food, and use art to attract the eyes of all your guests.

Water

Water is cooling and refreshing on hot summer days, and it appeals to our senses of sight and sound. “Grown-ups” often think that water gardens are the only way to invite this life-giving source to our outdoor spaces, but children know that sprinklers and kiddie pools are fun and easy water garden stand-ins. If you’re worried that the neighbours will call the men in little white coats if they see you jumping through your sprinkler, confine yourself to the back yard. Whatever the neighbors think, you’ll be cool and invigorated by your romp!

Cut Flowers

Bring the outdoors in by cutting some of the precious (and possibly wilting) flowers from your garden. Cut your flowers in the morning or evening, but not in the middle of the day. Don’t worry if you’re not a professional floral designer. Flowers are beautiful in their own right, and there’s nothing like being able to say you grew a bouquet yourself. These are just a few ways to enjoy your garden for the remainder of summer. Pull up a seat on your new bench, relax among your flowers and think about it. If you’re not too distracted by the beauty that surrounds you, I’m sure you’ll be able to think of lots more fun ideas – either for now or next season!

Garden rooms What is it about garden rooms that is so universally appealing? We’re getting excited just thinking about the prospect of a secluded little spot somewhere outdoors yet sheltered; removed from the house, yet familiar. We would even go so far as to say there is something rather primal about having a little space in the garden to retreat to. Whose first decorative instinct wasn’t to go outdoors and build some kind of den? On a more fundamental level, to sit and eat outside is one of summer’s greatest pleasures. Don’t let temperamental climate spoil your plans. Come and be inspired by these garden rooms that offer the best of indoors and out.

Camposol and District CRUZ AZUL CELEBRATES IN USA STYLE Independent Party: A New Beginning

It is a widely held view in the Camposol and Country Club area of Mazarron that over the years we have been badly let down by the Mazarron Town Council. The main Spanish political parties such as the PP, PSOE and UIDM have promised us much but delivered little. Indeed, as far as I am aware the PP even voted against repairing the collapsed Camposol bridge! Although we have received next to nothing from Mazarron Town Hall local residents have contributed literally millions to the Council`s coffers directly through our IBI tax and indirectly through our local spending patterns. In our view the Council has used the Camposol and Country Club as nothing more than a cash cow. Pressure groups such as the CRA have worked hard over the years on behalf of local residents but they lack the political power to effect the changes our local area badly needs. In response to this Council indifference a group of local residents

from Camposol and the Country Club have been working to create a new and local political party which would put local candidates forward for election at the local elections in May 2015. In the last week of April after meeting all the requirements the Camposol & District Independent Party (CDiP) received legal status from the Ministry of the Interior in Madrid. We are now working on our manifesto and believe our own local Councillors would make a real difference to our local area. It is now of course up to local residents to register on the Padron and declare their intention to vote. Our local Councillors could ensure a brighter future for Camposol than has been the case hitherto. If any reader wishes to know more about the CDiP please contact me at:- haynes.10@ hotmail.co.uk. Dr Peter Pitt President CDiP.

Cruz Azul celebrated their first anniversary in true USA style on Friday, 4 July at their shop in San Javier. Restaurante Hispania provided a super American-style barbeque and the rock and blues band, Los Duques, got the volunteers and supporters rocking. Some fabulous classic American cars were on display from the members of Mod Cruiserz Club who drove down from La Siesta and San Luis. Visitors were able to have their picture taken with some beautifully restored cars, including a Ford Mustang, Pontiac TransAm, Ford Lincoln, Ford Galaxy, Dodge Polara, Chrysler Stratus, Chevrolet Camoro, Corvette and Ford Classic. It was a double celebration, because the Ford Galaxy, owned by Mod Cruiserz member, Emmanuel Vadon, had reached its 50th birthday on the same day. Volunteer, Christiane Vadon, sold lots of raffle tickets and the lucky winner of the luxury bar set was Julia Sutton. “We can’t believe that it’s a year since we started our Cruz Azul journey” remarked Lyn Baines, Cruz Azul President. “We decided on the charity in July 2013, but it took a long time for our official charity registration to be approved, so we weren’t able to fundraise until the end of November 2013, when we opened the Cruz Azul shop in San Javier. We haven’t looked back since” she said. Thanks to the continuing generosity and support from the public and local businesses, and the growing success of the shop in San Javier, Cruz Azul has been able to help several pets whose owners are on low incomes. “We’re delighted with what we have been able to achieve in such a short space of time and we are keen to move forward with other initiatives in the near future to encourage responsible pet ownership, such as sterilization, microchipping and vaccination” commented Lyn. Cruz Azul’s shop is situated on the Avenida de la Unión in San Javier, next door to Yorkshire Linen and is open Monday to Saturday from 10.00

am until 2.00 pm. They sell clothes, accessories, jewellery, household goods, furniture, bric-a-brac and lots more, so why not pay them a visit? Even better, donate your unwanted clothes, furniture and items to show your support. Call 693 017 616 for more information. Cruz Azul Murcia is a registered charity (No. 11.720/1a) and exists to provide veterinary care for the sick and injured pets of people in need and to promote responsible pet ownership. If you or someone you know needs help, or you would like to volunteer or donate, please call 693 017 616 or visit their website: www.cruzazulmurcia.es

Prickly heat

Prickly heat, also known as miliariarubra, is an itchy rash of small, raised red spots that causes a stinging or prickling sensation on the skin. Prickly heat can develop anywhere on the body, but it most commonly occurs on your face, neck, back, chest and thighs. It usually appears a few days after exposure to hot temperatures. The rash is made up of tiny spots or bumps that are surrounded by an area of red skin. The spots sometimes look like tiny blisters and can cause: • mild swelling • itching • a stinging or intense prickling sensation What causes prickly heat? Prickly heat usually develops when a person sweats more than usual, such as during hot or humid weather. However, it is also possible to get prickly heat in the winter. The condition is caused when the body’s sweat glands become blocked. Excessive sweating can result in sweat becoming trapped beneath your skin. The trapped sweat causes skin irritation and the characteristic heat rash. The symptoms of prickly heat are usually worse in areas that are covered by clothing. This is because clothing can make you sweat and sometimes causes friction (rubbing). Who gets prickly heat? Although anyone can get prickly heat, you are more at risk of developing it if you’re in a hot climate where you sweat more than usual.

The following also increase your risk: • illness and immobility – long periods of time spent in bed can make you sweat more, particularly if you have warm bedding • wearing too much clothing, particularly in the winter • sitting too close to a fire or heater • being overweight or obese – which is more likely to lead to excessive sweating Babies and children are also more at risk of getting prickly heat, because their sweat glands are not fully developed. Treating prickly heat Prickly heat is not a serious condition and rarely requires any specific treatment. The rash usually disappears after a few days. However, there are several things you can do to ease your symptoms: • Avoid excessive heat and humidity – if you need to go outside, spend time in the shade or take a small fan with you. Further exposure to the heat will cause you to sweat more and may make your rash worse. Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration, especially in hot weather. • Wear loose cotton clothing – avoid wearing synthetic fibres, such as polyester and nylon, which trap heat easier than natural fibres. • Keep your skin cool – a cool bath or shower will cool you down, soothe your skin and help prevent further sweating. Staying in an air-conditioned room for a few hours a day will also provide considerable relief. You can also use a cold compress, but don’t leave it on the skin for longer than 20 minutes. • Use calamine lotion – this is available at most pharmacies and will help soothe sore and irritated skin. • Try hydrocortisone cream – low-strength hydrocortisone cream is also available from pharmacies and is effective at treating very itchy and irritated areas of skin. However, avoid using it on your face and always follow the instructions. • Antihistamine tablets may help control itching – but consult your Doctor first as they are not always suitable

braben’s blog... Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. Last night, while at a birthday party of a truly superb bloke whom I’m proud to call friend, I was asked about karaoke software and music. The person involved seemed to find music that was riddled with viruses. Truthfully, I have the hardest time getting a virus on my computer! Guess I’m just very lucky! As well all know downloading music is illegal in most countries, except for Spain where you can download it for personal use (a highly enlightened attitude when you consider the amount of money that the music industry has made, and continues to make, and the pressure that they apply to individuals to ensure that the flow of cash keep on coming!). That ruling, unfortunately, doesn’t include music for public demonstration. So therefore, even Karaoke (which is Japanese for “Empty Orchestra”) music must have a licence to play in public. Bearing all this in mind I thought, with the “Cavalier” attitude that so pigged off the police when I worked for them, that I would go ahead to start to find, download and virus-scan Karaoke music files and associated lyrics. As you read this, I have in 6 hours, found and downloaded 2200 files and waiting for another 4500(ish) to arrive. So far there isn’t a single virus to be found. What on earth am I going to do with all these music files? In truth, I haven’t a clue. As with most things I do, it is purely academic research to find out ‘IF’. If I can do it, If it is worth the effort, If anyone else can do it too! Well I can tell you, absolutely, that anyone can do this. One possible thought might be to convert this frog with laryngitis into a semi passable singer! One of the most popular formats combinations

for Karaoke is the MP3 music and CD/G formats. Well surprise surprise, I’ve found a free program, also virus and malware free, that will play this popular format. It is called ‘KaraFunPlayer’ and it actually lives upto its name. There is also another free program (sorry but I just love that word FREE) and it comes from the creators for the cd/g format so is completely compatible, which isn’t always the case and can be a drag when it isn’t! It also has the benefit of being “Drag and Drop” so you can find the file you want in your favourite file browser, click on it and drag it to the display window. What are the benefits to you? First, the truism that “If I can do it, anyone can do it” and that any and everyone can copy what I have done without too much effort. Second, should you be the ‘ever so shy’ type of personality (just like me) that won’t sing outside of the shower because you just don’t get the same sound without having your ears filled with water and shower gel, then this might be the perfect chance to develop your latent ‘X-Factor Winner’ persona. Finally, all you need is a computer, a microphone, speakers, deaf neighbours and bigger cojones than I possess and you could be the next greatest thing since sliced bread! Well that is enough from me and besides, it is 03:00 Friday morning and I’m shattered! You know where I will be and how to get hold of me, so don’t be a stranger! Until next week. Hasta La Proxima

Abandon hope all ye that enter - Part I Recently we unintentionally acted on some sound property advice: always buy the cheapest house in the best street. Well not literally as it’s an apartment not a house and not in a street either but a harbour side development. Oh, and we had already paid a deposit before hearing the advice. Being a Spanish owned holiday home since it was built 35 odd years ago the décor of woodchip walls in baby poo yellow and orange shiny pine furniture really sold it to us. Extra plug sockets had simply been stuck onto the walls with the exposed wiring adding that extra touch of class! Strangely the owners were most bemused and upset when we asked them to remove the furniture as it would do us perfectly well they said. We kindly explained that we had our own furniture rather than tell them it would all be best put on a bonfire. The obligatory Christ pictures and the scary ornamental dolls head were thus consigned to history. The galley type kitchen

To tweep or not to tweep!

Are you a n00b? No...a n00b. You’re going to ask just what a n00b is aren’t you? It’s someone who’s hopeless with new technology and has no desire to get embroiled in the stuff. Actually, I think that all of us who are don’t spend our life with our head in the internet or up to our eyes with Xboxes, egg boxes or whatever the latest game may be, are probably n00bs. But the reason I’m talking a load of n00bs - apparently it is spelt with two zeros instead of two letter o’s, I don’t really get it either- is, it’s one of the new words that have been added to the English language and I wouldn’t want anyone to feel left out of n00bish conversations. I’m quite pleased that new words are appearing, some of the others are used so much they’re in danger of being worn out. Have you noticed how often people are saying, “like” and “basically”? It’s rare to hear a sentence without one or other of them and, quite frankly, it’s getting to be a bit of a bore. Sometimes, the word “like” creeps into a sentence so many times that I am in danger of losing the plot. I blame the Disney Channel. Not the Snow White, Cinderella and Aristocats lot, they’re pretty safe. No, I was thinking of Hannah Montana-I wonder whatever happened to her, nice girl!-and the other young stars there. Try watching one of the shows, you’ll be overwhelmed by the number of times “like” and “basically” are used. Actually, on reflection, you may find that it would be something of a challenge to sit through one from beginning to end without wanting to fling yourself under the nearest speeding steam roller. You do worry don’t you for future conversations, with the Disney Channel and then Teletubbies. If the television really is influential then I think chat shows in the future will be worth giving a very wide berth! Well, no time for this, I have to go and tweep- another of the new words. I haven’t a clue what it means, but I like the sound of it so much so, until I find out I’m making an utter fool of myself by using it in the wrong context, it’s now permanently in my vocabulary. I think I’m safe though, no one else will know what it means either! Graham is married to Helen and has a daughter, Alice. He lives part of the year near Albox, but works in Qatar, teaching. looked and smelt like the black hole of Calcutta, recreating the Spanish mausoleum effect perfectly with kitchen units stained a dark mahogany and dark green peeling Formica worktops. Once the kitchen units were ripped out, the true size was revealed and the joyous process of choosing a kitchen began. In preparation we girded our loins and visited Leroy Merlin, Brico something and IKEA. Even though the Swedes failed to qualify for the World Cup they won this game. Leaving the store with 5 different brochures a Sunday morning was set aside for me to go onto the IKEA website and design the kitchen of our dreams, what could go wrong? After registering on the site and putting in the height/width/depth plus the shape all at first went swimmingly. A CAD image of the kitchen space appeared on screen and I was invited to pick whatever units and appliances were desired. Then apparently they would be

popped into place in our virtual kitchen. I managed to get a built in fridge unit up against a wall, even turned it 90 degrees and opened and closed some drawers. Then briefly a sink unit appeared but it vanished from the screen. Einstein’s observation on the definition of stupidity being repeating the same action but expecting a different result each time should be the motto attached to the IKEA software program. After clicking a picture of an oven it tantalisingly showed for mere moments. I clicked again, then again in a different manner. Whatever was chosen just would not appear in our kitchen picture. Yet when I checked the handy shopping list I had spent 8000€ on 5 ovens, 5 hobs, and 5 units to hold them, plus 3 sinks and 2 fridges. Delete! Start again then again some more. Morning became afternoon with the same results each time and plenty of cursing, as however I approached the cunning computer

game I could not find the treasure chest which held the Sword of Thor. Not a peek either of Super Mario or Pac Man so I gave up after 3 long hours and had a beer. A few days later my wife admitted to trying the website again using a work computer. I suspect she just wanted to prove how crap her husband is! Luckily the Gods smiled on me, indeed husbands everywhere as she too was unable to play the fiendish IKEA kitchen game. Plan B was then put into effect. Good old squared paper and scissors with the kitchen drawn exactly to scale. I cut out little shapes to scale to resemble cupboards, washing machines and the like. We happily played with our little paper jigsaw kitchen and shuffled bits about until happy with the positioning. Then we sellotaped everything into place on with the descriptions and product codes. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it!

According to the Exceltur Alliance for Tourism Excellence, Spanish tourism will grow by 2.4% in 2014, following growth of 3.1% in the second quarter of the year. This is an upward revision of their previous estimates, which put the increase for the full year at 2%, due to an improved outlook for Spanish households’ consumption, and the consolidation of the economic recovery in much of the European source markets. tourism sector remained the main engine of the economic recovery in Spain, rising by 3.1%, although at a slower rate than the strong rise of the first quarter. The creation of jobs in all tourist branches in the second quarter of the year was highlighted by the organisation as an especially important factor, resulting in an additional 65,309 contributors to the Spanish Social Security system in June, which is 4.6% above the 2013 levels. 62.2% of Spanish tourism companies experienced an increase in their sales in the second quarter of the year and 53% in their results, thanks largely to the surge in domestic demand and recovery of tourism businesses, particularly notable in areas hitherto badly affected by the crisis, such as travel agencies. Most tourist destinations recorded a positive second quarter. Among the holiday destinations, a marked improvement in business performance was highlighted in the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands, the Levante and the southern Mediterranean coast, particularly the Costa Del Sol and the Costa Blanca. With regard to the summer season, tourism businesses are moderately optimistic about the coming months, with 58.1% of them anticipating year-on-year growth in sales between July and September, and 50.1% predicting that this will lead to an improvement in their results. http://news.kyero.com/

The Black Hoard. A Remedy Rumstry Caseload by Carole Tempest “The thrill of the chase and the mystery of solving a puzzle is one thing, but being the object of the chase and evading police and things alike was more adventure than I craved.” Some of the characters have quirky names along with the places where this detective and murder story is set. For instance, Remedy Rumstry, Private Investigator who may sometimes show his droll sense of humour or reveal his sexual fantasies towards Detective Vi Bradley, one of his clients although he does take his work a bit more seriously, in fact a bit too seriously. His trademark is a fedora named after the 1882 drama by Victorien Sardou. Vi Bradley is trying to track down her boss, officially her ex-boss, Chief Inspector Vanaheim known simply as Van, a master of disguises and probably one of the smartest coppers around. So what is the problem? Her ex-husband, Shirley “Krow” Cankrow, owner of The Daily Mayhem and ace reporter has been murdered and Van has confessed to the murder. Rumstry knows she didn’t do it. Even Detective Vi knows she didn’t do it so the killer is still on the loose. Vi had a personal interest in all of this because she had had a brief affair with Krow and has been welltrained by her ex-boss, Van although she has ambivalent feelings towards her.” She lied and deceived me. She killed the love of my life and left me holding the bucket of shit that was her legacy of lies.” If you think it’s already complicated hold

on. It hasn’t even started. Van had apparently disappeared into thin air and Rumstry was supposed to be trying to track her down for Vi who was paying for his services. Three months down the line and our investigator is suggesting the case be closed. He knows something Vi doesn’t know. “You never really wanted to help me did you?” Answer, no, of course not! He is secretly working with Van as a confidential informant doing unofficial, off the record background checks on people like Vi. The story moves on when Rachel Porter, late 20s, out of desperation seeks his help in finding Priam’s Treasure, the jewels connected to Troy. She has an interesting story to tell involving seeing the treasure dating back 3,500 years around the time of the Trojan war. She knew that this remarkable find would boost her career and give her credibility. She had met a Robert Parker on the Isle of Wight, photographed the collection-or some of it and then published an article on it. As expected her boss was excited by this and they both chased up Parker hoping to find out more information. They travelled to the Isle of Wight but there was no trace of Parker. Where were the jewels and why had Parker disappeared? Yes Rumstry takes on the case out of pity for Rachel Porter whose work was discredited in the media and she was humiliatingly sacked. When he starts making enquiries, the next thing he knows he is taken down to the police station and questioned. His secretary, Dolly is the one to inform him that the jeweller he visited, Henry Bedford, in Chaos had been robbed

and then murdered. It seemed that Rumstry was the prime suspect because he was the last person to see him alive. When he tries reaching his client, she has also disappeared into thin air. Where do we go from here? Rumstry gets a bad feeling about all of this and wants to drop the case. When he talks to the editor of the Chronicle this guy has already decided that Rumstry was the murderer, a criminal mastermind he calls him. Rumstry had demanded a ring from the jeweller for his client Porter. Henry had refused to give it to him so he was stabbed with a letter opener. Rumstry had been recognised by his trademark “old man” hat. The story ran like this: “I was concealing my face and had my coat pulled tight about me to hide the blood stains on my clothes underneath.” Rumstry decides to lay low for a while and does a disappearing act also, this time with his life-long friend, the one and only Chief Inspector Van. It involves the two of them tracking down Rachel Porter and Robert Parker, locating the jewels and for Rumstry trying to prove his innocence when he becomes a fugitive and staying alive. More murders, this is dangerous detective work and a bit too hot to handle for the investigator. Who are the Blacks and what have they hoarded? “The only way to stop these people is to expose them, and the only way to do that is to bring their hoard into the light.” First they have to be one step ahead of these bad guys and that’s another story. Within 13 days it is resolved. But what is resolved?? I leave that up to you folks. Publisher: Kindle available from Amazon. pause for thought I guess that most folk, whether religious or not, know and almost certainly approve, at least one quote from Jesus – “Love your neighbour as yourself.” The snag is that however much we may agree with that ideal, I doubt there’s anyone who truly follows that principal. Yes, we’ll go so far, and readily help others, or try to be considerate, but there’s always that moment when self-interest quite naturally and understandably takes over. If I truly loved my neighbour, I’d readily give my place up in any queue, putting their needs ahead of my own. And if I truly loved my neighbour, I’d never be irritated or annoyed by the habits, moods or comments of others, trying instead to love, to help and understand them. And I’d never get on my “high horse” or wish others would “mind their own business”, nor would I knowingly do or say anything that offended or irritated anyone else, however much I may believe myself to be “within my rights”. For loving my neighbour, as Jesus spoke of it, means putting the rights, the needs and the feelings of anyone whose path crosses mine, above my own. And that can be quite a challenge! And if that were not challenge enough, let’s get that quote in context. Jesus actually said “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength, and then love your neighbour as yourself.” And if we struggle to truly love our neighbour, then just how far do we all fall short of loving God – the pre-requisite to loving our neighbour? How many of us even bother to give God a moments thought in any day? No wonder then we fail so dismally in truly loving others. But the good news is that the God we so try to ignore, entirely understands our weaknesses, so is always more than ready to forgive our many failures and through his Holy Spirit give us strength to do better, if only we’d just ask. It’s OK to eat them when they’re still a little pink inside, but if you want to cook them through then go ahead. Toast your buns lightly on the hot griddle pan or barbecue and make the burgers by filling each bun with a hot tuna pattie, some dressed salad leaves, some sliced tomato, a wedge of lemon on the side and some ketchup. Tip: Make sure your barbecue or griddle pan is nice and hot before you cook the burgers!

Ginger & honey chicken wings

1. Mix all the marinade ingredients in a bowl to make a sticky sauce. 2. Place the chicken wings in a single layer in a wide, shallow, nonreactive dish. Pour the marinade over the chicken, cover with clingfilm and place in the fridge to marinate for 24 hours. 3. Heat your barbecue or griddle pan until hot. Cook the wings for 15–20 minutes, turning often, until dark and the juices run clear when the chicken is pierced with a skewer. If cooking on a griddle, finish the wings in the oven at 180C/ gas 4 for 10–15 minutes to ensure they’re cooked through. Source: www.jamieoliver.com/

Meet Purrmanently Sad Cat online - and watched it go viral. “We took a picture and kept it to ourselves to giggle over and share with friends. I put it up on the internet one night when I couldn’t sleep, just for a few laughs. Didn’t really expect her to become so popular! “PSC is actually a very happy kitten despite her facial expression! She is currently cuddled up on my shoulder with her sister and one of her brothers taking a little cat nap! It’s raining right now and she doesn’t like thunder. “She likes cuddling, nibbling on my fingers (especially knuckles), hiding under the bed, taking very long welldeserved naps, and trying to get her mommy Khaleesi to play with her.” The original Grumpy Cat became a viral internet star after being renamed for her angry looking facial expression.

APAH Space for a little one?

Born in April 2013, Ollie and Oscar were found in the garden of an abandoned house. They are only small boys and very different characters. Ollie is very nervous and frightened but Oscar is very confident, so would need homes to suit each of them. To meet them, please contact Yvonne on 630 422 563.

Ollie & Oscar

Source: web.orange.co.uk Step aside Grumpy Cat, there’s a new kitty in town! Be prepared for the internet to grind to a halt, thanks to - Purrmanently Sad Cat. The mournful looking kitten is owned by Ashley Herring, 21, from New Orleans, who gave her the distinstive name. She said: “My cat recently had a litter of kittens. My roommate Bridget Ayers and I realised this one

kitten’s sad face one day when we were watching them learn to walk around in my room.

Mountain View

“She was waddling around and we looked at her and both just went Oh. My. God. She looks so depressed! Permasad face! I decided to call this one Purrmanently Sad Cat.”

Centrally-heated houses with large individual runs Love and care will be lavished during your cat’s stay My 29 years of experience in animal and veterinary care will give you piece of mind

www.soltimes.com

The word lodged in the consciousness of the waitress, who eventually deciphered its meaning, produced a cup of hot water and a teabag, and plonked it on the counter front of a different customer. However, we are a polite nation, we tend not to make a fuss, so at the next pass Joan reiterated her request for ‘Té’ in tones clear and Spanish. Something stirred deep in the waitress’s cognitive processes. She frowned in puzzlement, turned a complete circle, and stopped dead like a defeated Dalek, rendered completely immobile by this alien order. Seeing her dilemma, Joan tried a different tack. ‘Tea.’ She said in tones clear and English. The word re-animated the waitress. With the confused look of one who has recently awoken from a coma she tottered unsteadily towards the coffee machine. ‘No, té.’ Protested Joan, but to no avail – the waitresses’ automotive processes were programmed for coffee,

and coffee it would be! The coffee duly delivered, the man on Joan’s left came to her assistance. ‘No café, té.’ He pushed the cup back towards the waitress, who congealed to a standstill, stunned by this incomprehensible action. ‘Té!’ Joan and her helpmate reiterated together. The three seemed trapped in an invisible bubble where Time stands still. The coffee remained on the counter between them, slopping gently into its saucer. Around them the hustle and bustle of Life continued as normal. As slowly as a growing stalactite an idea formed in the turgid swamp of the waitress’s mind. She rolled her eyes heavenward, shrugged her shoulders with her palms upward in a gesture of divine pleading so favoured by sculptors of the Virgin Mary. ‘Ah! Tay-ah!’ She proclaimed, and departed towards the teabags! By now it was nearly time to get back on the bus josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk again!

Taking Woodbine Out for a Drag

When I was a kid most people had a nickname. In our class at school we had such individuals as ‘Herbie’ Elliott – named after a famous athlete of the day – an ‘Ackers’, a ‘Mole’, a ‘Wisey’ and a ‘Hawkeye’. All derived from their names and all under the tutelage of our form master ‘Jake’ Kirby. For my part, with a name like Bird, it was open season for the class comedians and although my day-to-day nom de guerre was simply Birdie, I also had to endure such handles as Dicky, Tweety Pie and even Vulture. Then after we left school, this form of address was for the most part dropped, with many of us reverting back to the names we had been christened with and in short, starting to act like adults about the whole thing. This was a particular relief to Vulture! Later in life whilst working abroad, two of my Bermudian workmates bore the nicknames of ‘Fire’ and ‘Nobby’. The name Fire, it turned out, was more of an ironic aphorism because Mr Fire usually worked at the pace of an arthritic tortoise, whilst Nobby (I had assumed) meant that his family name must be Clark. There are other surnames that for reasons I have never been able to fathom, automatically carry the same nicknames down the generations and seem to be almost compulsory requirements. Names such as Spud Baker, Dusty Miller

By Colin Bird :

badbirdnow@gmail.com

and Tug Wilson being three examples and hence my assumption about my pal Nobby Clark. It was only after working with him for several months that I broached the subject one day and was surprised when he told me that his name was in fact George Bean. As I had never to my knowledge encountered a nobby bean, only the haricot, kidney and baked varieties, I asked him how he had acquired the nickname Nobby. He looked at me with a lopsided grin, slowly unbuckled his belt and revealed the obvious truth. It was a miracle that I didn’t fall off the roof we were working on. Later still, after we had moved to rural Suffolk, we found that it was the characters and the ‘old boys’ of the village who had been christened with strange titles such as ‘Waters’ Alcock, ‘Squibby’ Murkin, ‘Hawker’ Hurrell and ‘Shacker’ Wright . . . none of which could be explained away by my contemporaries and the origins of which seemed to be a jealously guarded secret among the older fraternity, although the meanings of such attachments as ‘Chatty’ Harrod and ‘Shrimpy’ Mortlock were self evident. Sadly all of these local personalities are now gone, never to be replaced and the village in my opinion is the poorer for it, but I am forever grateful that we had at least a few years in their presence and tasted briefly the essence of village life as it once was. But some of their pronouncements and eccentric declarations live on. ‘Waters’ wife Emily was in the village shop one day and asked for two pounds of Spanish onions because she didn’t like the foreign ones,

and when ‘Chatty’ was once asked what he had bought his wife for her birthday, he said he had not bothered because she hadn’t used the previous year’s present . . . a plot in the cemetery. Waters himself one day, declared with a straight face, that the best looking man in the village was Dr Forsyth’s wife . . . and so they went on. I only wish I had had the foresight to keep a record of these gems long before I did. My old friend Dougie who now resides in California, bears the nickname ‘Dog Legs’ from his time in Bermuda. When introducing himself one time, the name of Douglas was interpreted as dog legs by an inebriated islander and so it has remained. The same Bermudian re-christened me five years ago at one of our get togethers, as ‘Tripod’ – not because of any physical peculiarity unfortunately, but simply because I was going through a phase of using one of those table camera tripods for selfies at every given opportunity. Then two weeks ago, Dougie and I flew into Miami to visit a sick friend – also from our Bermuda days – who, his fiancé felt, needed cheering up and his spirits lifting. The doctors at the rehabilitation hospital where he is a patient, gave their approval for Terry – who shares our unusual sense of humour - to have a few hours out with us. He is unable to walk unaided for the moment and as we prepared to get him into his wheelchair to take him down to the car, Dougie remarked to a nurse that we were taking our friend out for a drag. Ding! Terry will henceforth be known as Woodbine.

Tay-Ah We descended on the Motorway Services en masse; it was a large coach, and we had been in it for long enough to make the need for liquid, either intake or outflow, uppermost in our collective mind. As an invading army we approached and stood shoulder to shoulder at the counter, but being British, we each stood patiently waiting our turn. 2 waitresses were serving behind the counter, facing this tidal wave of ex-pats – I think there should have been 3, but the third one had gone home with a headache, and taken the communal brain cell with her, leaving her compañeras to cope in their own without the aid of any form of comprehension whatsoever. ‘Té.’ Requested Joan, standing to my left.

alqueria

viewpoint

The green mist hung heavy in the morning air. Its ability to offend the nostrils and severely erode the epidermis keeps the local inhabitants behind closed doors. The return of the Alquerian Mist was unheralded due to the complex nature of its origin. The bad drainage coupled with a temperature inversion which occurs from time to time in the Alquerian Valley are considered the main causes. This time it was thick, foul smelling and particularly irritating to the exposed parts. The timing of this meteorological phenomenon was unfortunate. A television unit from the BBC, led by that celebrated director Gordon Gigglemoor was in the process of producing a documentary. ‘Utopia’ was to be a programme investigating why so many Britons choose to settle on the southern Iberian Continent. Alqueria had been chosen as the venue. Why? Perhaps bribery by the Pueblo’s leaders. Perhaps research had selected Alqueria from its many rivals or perhaps it was just sheer bad luck on the part of the BBC. Whatever the reason Gordon and his worthy crew coughed and scratched their way through the disgusting green mist. The cultured presenter’s voice of Preston Melove permeated through the chocking haze. He waxed lyrical about the wonderful climate before collapsing in a paroxysm of coughing. Preston is a man with two great loves, himself and food. His opinion of Alquerian food was to regard it as a weapon of war rather than something one would voluntarily digest. His forced smile as he sampled the Alquerian Newt Pie said it all but in the true tradition of the BBC Preston put on his professional face. Describing the

¿Utopía?

delicacy as unique and delicious before moving out of shot and vomiting for five full minutes. The smell of the pie lingered causing Preston to be followed by a herd of meowing cats. It was with some trepidation that the film crew setup their equipment with the intent of capturing a typical evening’s entertainment at the Bar La Casa Devante. Ernesto Muyinestable, the one-legged flamenco dancer was first up or rather down, his performance alternating between the two. The applause which greeted Ernesto at the end of his act was one of pity and embarrassment. Ernesto viewed it differently and vowed to increase his repertoire with more complicated routines. A recipe for disaster. Manuela followed with her ‘gran espectáculo’. This involved Manuela, a root vegetable, a sidearm truncheon and a volunteer from the audience. Even the hardened locals felt nauseas as Manuela performed feats of amazing dexterity and ingenuity. At this point Preston was seen to weep openly. Sobbing into his microphone which expired with a puff of blue smoke and a muted crackle.

Leading Removal Company reports on strengthening housing market One of Spain’s top removal companies has reported that they experienced a resurgence in the Spanish housing market during 2013 and it looks like 2014 will be an even busier year. Mat Ford-Dunn, the Managing Director of ‘Advance Moves International Removals’ pointed to the fact that many property values in Spain have now fallen to a much more realistic level and this has definitely resulted in increased house sales. This has been noticed in all regions of Spain as Advance Moves operate their relocation services throughout the mainland. Advance Moves has its main warehouse in Murcia, Spain, with an additional warehouse in Kent in the UK and has had to purchase 5 new vans and trucks to cope with the increased demand over the past year. The UK housing market is also in a state of recovery and increased house sales have resulted in more people selling up and looking to buy in Spain. There are many factors that

tempt expats to Spain, not least the recent periods of turbulent weather, which many parts of the UK have suffered. On the flip side, for economic reasons many British Expats are now able to sell properties in Spain and Advance Moves are often the first choice when it comes to repatriating them back to the UK. Mat was also keen to point out that the increase in demand for their removal services was also down to the level of service and expertise that Advance moves offer to their clients and the fact that many clients had already seen the brightly liveried vehicles on the roads undertaking their removal services. Advance moves is also a member of the British Association of Removers and one of only a few companies that export wrap furniture to provide extra protection for international removals. ‘Our clients know that they are getting a more competitively priced, premium removal service, when compared to the rest of the market. The increased volume of removals enables Advance Moves to offer their clients a more regular and flexible timetable for their individual removal requirements’ Mat sees the trend continuing throughout 2014 with the housing market in the UK and Spain continuing to make steady process. Advance Moves are gearing up for another busy year.

motoring “I want to go back.” By Tim Saunders

That’s what eldest daughter Harriett (3) reveals on leaving Paultons Park in Hampshire, UK. A desire that is the goal of any family theme park operator. Paultons first opened its doors in 1983 with just four staff. An amazing 80,000 visitors arrived that year, at a time when theme parks were still a relatively new phenomena to the UK. It was a massive gamble for farmer John Mancey who successfully applied for a planning application to turn part of the estate into a visitor attraction. He died in 2003 and his son Richard now continues his father’s legacy. By 1993 400,000 visitors, looking for a good day out, were pouring through the doors. A plan of continued investment saw the park expand in 1999 ploughing £500,000 into the Raging River Rapids Ride. But it was the opening of Peppa Pig World in 2011 that sealed the park’s success. Every child wants to visit and not just from the UK but much further afield. Unsurprisingly in 2014 the multi-million pound success story now employs 600 staff at peak times and enjoys one million visitors a year to its 60 rides. The park’s 140 acres of land also feature a collection of birds and animals. In short it is a fabulous day out that demands you revisit. When we arrive the weather is looking questionable but despite this the car park is quickly filling up. Naturally, Peppa Pig World is the place where Harriett drags us to first. There are children from France, Italy and Germany and so as we queue for our go in Daddy Pig’s Car Ride and Miss Rabbit’s Helicopter Flight, Harriett and Heidi have the chance of eavesdropping on a variety of interesting and different languages.

I had forgotten that with theme parks comes the inevitable queue and I was beginning to doubt whether Harriett would cope. But, as with all the other children, she patiently and surprisingly for me, waits her turn, generally quietly. “It’s a good lesson in patience,” says my wife, Caroline. True. After a visit to Peppa’s House it’s time for our picnic. And pleasingly there are plenty of benches. Lunch is a quick affair though because there’s so much more to see. By this time Heidi is flat out and Harriett has seen the park. So she’s occupied for ages going up and down the slide. At one point we all laugh as the dress of the girl in front of her covers her head as she lands at the bottom. Harriett and Caroline then spy Wave Runner. “Daddy daddy can I go on that?” I reply: “Oh I’m not sure you’re old enough my darling.” Harriett: “Oh I am I am.” Looking to Caroline in a pale sort of way, I ask: “Would you like to go sweetheart?” Caroline: “I’m ok thanks, you go.” And so it is that father and daughter set out on a little heart stopping adventure. We are surprised how there are so few people queuing for this ride. Five minutes later after watching the other visitors hurtle down at pretty fast speeds and shouting too, I ask Harriett “Are you ok? You don’t have to go on this ride you know.” Harriett: “I want to, I want to.” So we sit in a dinghy, Harriett at the front and I behind hugging her tightly with my legs. “You must hold the handles tight, Harriett,” I repeat goodness knows how many times. And we’re off. I can only liken the speed to something similar I experienced when going upside down in a Yak aeroplane a few years ago. It’s petrifying. Your heart is in your mouth. If it went on for any longer we would have been ill. The fact that you’re not in control is a great fear. And then no sooner has the world whizzed by and Harriett has gone unusually quiet, it’s finished and we’re up putting the dinghy back on the automatic belt watching it go back up to the top. It takes Harriett and I a little while to recover and the Trekking Tractors help

regain our composure. The Victorian Carousel and the teacup ride also prove great hits with all of us. We then enjoy a relaxing stroll around some of the grounds to see the birds. Harriett then spots another playground so we just have to visit. We are only able to visit a portion of the park and so the season ticket option seems a good idea. “How many family days together can you actually remember?” questions Caroline. “Not many but one thing’s for sure we won’t forget our day out at Paultons.” Our weekend of treats is not over though because the following day we head for Lyndhurst for another day out. We have a slap up Sunday lunch at The White Rabbit, a Chef and Brewer hotel. Caroline and I have roast beef and Yorkshire puddings with all the trimmings while Harriett enjoys fish and chips. Heidi helps herself to a bit of everybody’s. It’s a good job we get there early because Heidi doesn’t like sitting down for too long and soon starts squawking. We begin to realise that we should wait until she is older before letting her loose on the unsuspecting public. Caroline and I take it turns walking her outside. At least we both eat our meals but it is unfortunate that we cannot do this together. The White Rabbit is aptly named because Lyndhurst is very much the centre of all things Alice in Wonderland. You see Alice Pleasance Liddell 1852 to 1934 who lived much of her life in Lyndhurst, was the inspiration behind Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. We visit St Michael and All Angels Church, with its stunning stained glass windows, and Alice Liddell is buried there. There’s a bench outside and we enjoy just sitting down, watching Harriett playing while Heidi rests. Hampshire certainly has much to offer when it comes to taking a day out. SMGS VISIT RODA.

It’s quite some months since we visited Roda & there’s no better time to play this challenging course than in the height of summer......... that ever-present breeze becomes a very welcome feature. It was the next round of the “Bogeys Shield” event, sponsored for many years by Bogeys Restaurant in Villamartin Plaza, which is the society’s only medal competition. Some necessary remedial work on the front nine meant we teed off from the tenth leaving the more difficult front nine till later in the day when the wind had strengthened a bit, making it all in all a pretty tough day at the office! Top two scores of the day were carded by two of our Irish members who have probably played much of their golf on the wild west coast of their homeland....”Wind? What wind?”. We had the pleasure of Ivan Hanak’s company in our fourball and his mastery of the course & conditions was a joy to witness...... AND he still left a few shots out there! The last quarter final of the singles KO match-play was fought out right down to the wire when Darren Hancock & Norman McBride were still level after 18 tough holes. Congratulations eventually went to Darren who got the better of Norman on the first extra hole. NTP’s were awarded to John Aitchison (2), Ivan Hanak (7), Phil de Lacy (11) & Ken Flaherty (13). Peter Girenas won the

day’s guest prize. Bronze category’s top 4 were Norman McBride (79 C/B), Chris Hamblett (79 C/ B), Keith Stevenson (77) & Mike Jordan (74). To be expected in “proper” golf, as the handicaps dropped - the scores improved........ Silver’s winners were Noel Bannon (73), Ken Flaherty (70), Phil de Lacy (69) & Ivan Hanak (68)......and the gold top 4 were Tony Smale (75 C/B), Ben Price (74), Steve Fleet (73) & with the best score of the day it was Shay Cunningham (66). Congratulations to all those in the prizes. Keep abreast of all society matters by logging onto the website, www.smgs. org or simply give Phil a quick buzz on 966 774 197 to get info on future Wed meetings at which visitors are always welcome.

QUESADA GOLF SUPER LEAGUE S U M M E R COMPETITION FONT DEL LLOP 7TH JULY 2014 This year’s competition we are once again guests of Font del Llop. With 48 players competing and the two tee start everybody was off by 9.40am. There was dissention from some of the players that the tees were back on the yellow block and with the wind in our faces as we tee’ed off it was apparent that it was going to make it even more difficult. Nevertheless it was the same for everybody. The course was in excellent condition but we found the greens slower than we would have liked. We thank Font del Llop for their excellent hospitality and sponsorship of the main prize. We also thank Mick the Grip for his participation and sponsorship for nearest the pins, including nearest in two and nearest in three. We thank all our other sponsors who are too numerous to name in person. As the day ended for each four ball we made our way back to the Sportsman Bar in Quesada for an excellent meal and hospitality laid on by Ron and his staff. As we began to sort through the cards it was obvious that despite the problems earlier in the day some excellent scores had been recorded. A fact that was borne out by having four groups on 38 which all had to be counted out on count back for second place. In the end it was a close run thing as the results be-

low show. Overall Winners who receive the trophy and green fees from Font del Llop Kevin Williams and Gary Strowger 40 points. TMGS Match Report, La Finca 9th July 2014. On this day in history in a1816 Argentina declared independence from Spain, but will they beat Holland tonight? In addition to that little nugget, 31 members and gueststurned up at La Finca with the sun shining albeit with a few clouds in the sky and a nice breeze for our latest venture to this wonderful course. The course itself is in splendid conditionand it was made slightly easier for us with some of the yellow boxes being close to the reds or past the blue boxes, and maybe this was the reason for some unusual high scores that came in with one or two

had the Handicap Secretary smiling and his heart pounding faster, nothing excites him more (according to his wife) than cutting handicaps, especially two of the winners. All 4 of the NTP’s, which were kindly donated by Tom Jones and Pearl Sabine were claimed and the recipients of a bottle of fine wine went to Matthew Taylor, Mick Kennedy, Alex Goslan and Mike O’Regan who said he will enjoy his wine with the happy thoughts of beating Joe “the Pro” Dean for the said bottle. As said earlier, there were some very tidy scores and it needed a39 points for the Best Guest award which included a bottle of Vodka kindly donated by Vernon Brown and that bottle, plus a Society towel went to Gary Turner. The Silver Division players –once again – outscored their Gold Division counterparts andit needed a 35 point score to secure 4th

spot and this went to Kenny Hunter. Ernie (The Belfast Bandit) again featured on the podium, also with 35 points, but with a superior back 9. The runner-up slot went to Alan Rickers with 38 points and on a normal day, he would have easily taken the bacon home, but not on this fine day. The winner was Ian Parkinson with an absolute brilliant 46 points and although he was very happy, a big beaming smile adorning his boat race, that soon turned into a look of shock when he found out the severity of the cut in his handicap. In the Gold Division, the scores weren’t so appealing and it only needed a 33 from Bill Starkey and Paul Fairclough to claim 4th and 3rd spots respectively. It was nice to see the “old boy” Michael Fearnehough claiming 2nd spot with a very good 37 but he fell 2 short of the winner’s score of 39 whichwas Steve Higgins and he will also see his handicap being cut, again. Today was also the Present Captain v the Ex Captain and the players were split and total scores added up. This year, the winning team was the Present Captains Team and Steve Higgins would have graciously accepted the trophy had the Match Secretary brought it with him!

it. You could almost hear the buggy saying “Oh bloody hell, I wish these two fat geezers would walk”. One has to laugh at Paul “Lennie” Fairclough when he said, quite proudly “I’ve lost 7 kilo since I’ve been here in Spain”. Even the buggy laughed, well until Lennie and Matthew Taylor

got sat back down inside.Photo: Silver category winners Our next game, Wednesday 16th July 2014 see’s us at AlendaGolf so if you fancy a game just look at our website www.tmgs.org or call the Match Secretary on 966719604.

Our meeting on Thursday at Alicante Golf was blessed with moderate temperatures and a cooling breeze.Having seen the completion of Ladies Day at Ascot earlier this year, the Society unwittingly hosted its own Ladies Day with the majority of winners coming from our superb lady golfers. The course,as usual, was in perfect condition although few of the gentlemen’s scores reflected this. Nearest the pins on 4 of the 6 par 3’s were won by Pete Wootton, Barry Thorogood and two for Elspeth Craig. Elspeth was also the Silver Division winner with 32 points, and I’m informed by her losing matchplay opponent,Mike Green, that her game was excellent and she was a deserved winner. The winner of the Gold Division with a great score of

36 points was Aileen Beale. As part of her 4-ball it was a privilege to watch such an accomplished golfer.
