TV NEWSLETTER
august 2014
All is well at the Rainbow home camp …………. Dogs and cat just sleep all day in the heat and the garden is suffering from heat and lack of water ……….. regular readers will now that our wells on the land have almost dried up due to the lack of rain and the water table dropping ………. But with careful management and using all available water from the washing up bowl etc we have managed to keep all alive so far ………still another month of the intense heat but fingers crossed ………. And for a 5 day rain period in the autumn ! As usual the whole of Madrid has descended on the coast – patience on the roads and in the supermarket is needed ! ……. But it is only 6 weeks and boosts the local economy. TV NEWS …………. Lots of you with the smaller dishes are having the reception problems and many seem to be thinking it will get better ……… it is not going to happen ! The only way to get FREESAT channels is a bigger dish (really a 1.80 is needed) or internet TV …….. When decent internet from a provider who will support TV is needed. Internet TV is the way forward – I predict all TV will be delivered this way within 10 or so years ……… the satellite giving us all the problems has a 15 year life and I doubt any more will be launched for TV services ……… so with a 5 year change over period most of us will see our TV delivered solely by internet ………….. If you have a smaller dish and lost many channels there is a way to get some UK TV – not the BBC/ITV but at least something to watch and that is to subscribe to one of our affordable SKY packs ………. Most of the SKY channels are fine on the smaller dishes so although no Corrie or ‘enders there is a lot of watchable programmes……….. Ask for details. On the same subject I get lots of questions asking “if we stop our SKY subscription and buy a FREESAT box will we get out BBC/ITV back” - the simple answer is NO. However you get your BBC/ITV – be it SKY / FREESAT / UNIVERSAL BOX or ??? It is all the same signal from the satellite system ……. Very weak now so changing system / box will have no effect ……….. Although some boxes do have better tuners in them than others so if you are getting pixcellating pictures it is just possible you have a poor tuner box and a good tuner box will improve ……. You really need specialist advice on this. There is a rumour going round the bars that the popular SKYBOX (that’s the brand and not an official SKY BOX !!) will work magic and bring all channels back …….. Well this box does have an excellent tuner in it but it will NOT resolve all the issues on the smaller dishes. Try to borrow one to try on your dish before you rush in and buy one. Sports fans will have noted SKY are launching SKYSPORTS 5 – an international football channel. Those of you with SKY boxes and SKY cards will get the channel automatically – as will internet TV subscribers ………. But the other affordable packs will require a channel list upgrade ………. If you want it then ask us to programme the box – just euro5 if we do when in your area. Most HD channels are not now available on the affordable SKY packs ……… so just go to the SD version to watch ………..perhaps not as sharp a picture but many of us older folks (!) with older eyes can tell very little difference ……… a decent TV and digibox will produce excellent SD pictures. Contact Alan for any free TV advise ………. (0034) 686 358 475 ……… he will do his best to assist with your problems ………… Rainbow Satellites.

Reach Out Round Up
There is so much going on at local humanitarian charity, Reach Out/ Extiende la Mano that when we caught up with Charity President Karolina Leonard this week, she hardly knew where to begin with news. GO BANANAS Firstly, Karolina was delighted with a donation of 750kg of bananas. Volunteers got the call last week and arrived to the pickup point in Alicante to collect boxes upon boxes of the nutritious fruit. Karolina said, “We are very grateful for this donation. So many of our homeless people and families don’t get enough fresh fruit to eat and to have such an abundance of nutritious bananas is a blessing. We will put them to good use!” WHITE VAN MAN The charity’s van appeal finally came to fruition earlier this month when they were able to purchase a second hand van in excellent condition. After raising €6000 with the help of the local community, the charity began searching for a suitable vehicle. Karolina told us, “We needed something with a long wheelbase and a high top to allow us
to collect and deliver furniture for our second hand shop - a vital source of income for the charity.” The charity is now the proud owner of a beautiful second hand Volkswagen van which will soon be signwritten with the charity’s logo. ROTARY CLUB DINNER Reach Out was invited to attend the recent Rotary Club dinner at which new Rotary President, Emilio Córcoles was sworn in. Emilio is very interested in the work carried out by Reach Out in the community and it is the hope of the charity that Reach Out and the Rotary Club can work together during Emilio’s forthcoming term of office. FASHION SHOW Reach Out, is hosting a fashion show at the New Asturias Restaurant on Friday 25th July. The event starts at 1pm the show will reflect the quality and cheap prices of the charity’s second hand clothing shops. After the show, clothes will be available for purchase together with bags shoes, etc. There will also be a raffle and tombola to complete the afternoon. DINE OUT FOR CHARITY Those lovely people at Casa Vasa in El Limonar (just down from Shannon’s, above Bombay Palace) have decided that every Monday from now until August 31st, 5% of everyone’s bill goes to Reach Out. The restaurant offers international cuisine with a Scandinavian twist and even has a mini golf course on the roof!

THE ORIHUELA COSTA PAY THEIR RESPECTS
The 4th of August 2014 marks the 100th anniversary of the day Britain entered one of the costliest conflicts in history – the First World War – with fighting continuing until the Armistice Day, 11th of November 1918. One hundred years later we are inviting you to take part in the global commemoration here on the Costa Blanca together with local members of the Royal British Legion, in a period of reflection to be held on Sunday 3rd August, at 11am, in the Capilla de las Mil Palmeras, the local Catholic Church, situated almost next door to the Olympia Restaurant. Opera Singer Paul Michael will be performing during the service which
will be conducted by the Chaplain of the Orihuela Costa Branch of the RBL, Pastor Keith Brown. Following the service there will be a wreath laying ceremony in the Garden of Remembrance situated adjacent to the church. Poppy crosses will be on sale on the day which may also be laid at that time. It will be then followed by a march past led by the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums. Seating will be available both inside and outside the church at which members of the public are warmly invited to join their ex service colleagues.

‘World’s most dangerous’ drug lord responsible for 400 murders caught on Costa Blanca
A DRUG baron behind over 400 murders has been arrested in Elche (Alicante province) after fleeing his native Colombia. Hernán Alonso Villa, 40, known as ‘El Ratón’ (‘the mouse’) was caught on the AP-7 motorway near Alicante-Elche airport with 40,000 euros in cash on his person. He was the military leader of the bloodthirsty, 200strong Medellín Cartel and is described as one of the world’s most dangerous drug traffickers. Villa headed up the ‘Envigado Payment and Hitmen Office’, which has executed over 400 non-paying addicts and secondary dealers since the Cartel was founded in 1980, and is responsible for smuggling cocaine from Colombia to Spain, Holland and the USA. Originally led by the notorious drug lord Pablo Escobar, the racket has expanded considerably in the past 30 or so years and now has close links with the well-known and exceptionally violent Sinaloa Cartel, based in the city of the same name in northern México. Police in the Alicante province had been on Villa’s trail for a month before they caught him

He drove to the estate and was letting himself in his house when he was surrounded by armed police and several patrol cars, but did not put up any resistance. Considered one of the most dangerous and violent criminals ever to have been caught in Spain, Villa is due to be extradited to Colombia this week in keeping with the international arrest warrant issued by the court in Medellín. He is charged with multiple counts of murder, armed robbery, kidnap, extortion, money-laundering, drug-trafficking, and manufacture and possession of firearms. Source: www.thinkspain.com
Absolute Magic
And it was....ABSOLUTE MAGIC Magician Graeme Mykal was amazing we were expecting around 25 children but we lost count after 45! Graeme was at Quesada Country Club and he worked very hard for 90 minutes and for the first half of the show there were screams and shouts of delight with almost every child wanting to be the Magician’s Assistant! The noise level was almost as amazing as the magic! Graeme then went on to surprise many of the children with his balloon magic while Saucy Witch Martelle was busy face painting and doing glitter tattoos. The next magical event at Quesada
Country Club is the Annual Pool Party on Saturday 2nd August, this is a fun filled day at Quesada Country Club starting at 12.00 Midday with a running BBQ all day that goes on until 6.00p.m. in the evening. Don’t forget to put the date in your diary - as always Dennis Christian TKO regular DJ will be overseeing the events and magician Graeme Mykal will be back by popular demand and will be once again performing his close up magic and we have asked him if he can do another children’s show! Graeme works his magic along the Costa check out his fb page to find out where he is appearing next!

Original craft work in Hondón de las Nieves If you fancy a stroll through a quiet Spanish village and a cool glass of sangría on a sunny terrace, if you admire and buy beautiful craft work, you could do worse than keep either Friday 1 or Saturday 2 August free to go and visit Hondón de las Nieves. On those two days some 30 genuine craftsmen and women invade this charming village to set up their stalls and demonstrate their crafts.
It’s the third year in a row that the Town Hall has invited craft association Amata to organise the fair, because Amata guarantees “Artesanía de Autor” all the items sold in the fair are made by the person actually in the stall, who can explain, and sometimes even show you, how things are made. Nothing is imported, nothing comes from a factory, it’s all made by hand by people living and working in Spain. Some 30 stalls will offer a wide variety of curious and intriguing items: pottery and carved wood, soft toys, leather bags, individually designed jewelry in silver, glass, macramé and even paper, lovely little figures of felted wool, and many different de c orat i ve objects. Glass blower José will be
assured of special attention as he demonstrates his craft and usually you will have to queue up at Raquel’s workshop if you want to try your hand at making your own sheet of paper. Gourmets can have a nosh at several food stalls offering cheeses, traditional sweets, honey and preserves to take home or sweet and savoury pancakes to eat on the spot. There is also an Arab tea tent, offering teas and sweets, cous cous and other Arab specialities. The smaller children can have a go at the merry-go-round or play traditional table games like nine men’s morris and shove ha’ penny. Hondon de las Nieves Craft Fair will start at 7 pm on both Friday 1 and Saturday 2 August. Hondón lies between Elche and Novelda; to get there, take the exit “Aspe” on the A7 or A31 motorway and in Aspe itself follow the signs “Hondón de las Nieves”. For more information, ring 639 979 678, we even speak English. If you want to see pretty pictures of the previous markets organised by Amata in Hondón de las Nieves, you can look at http://www.amata.es/Hondon13.html and http://www.amata.es/Hondon12.html.

Remarkable Figures Put Murcia at a Five-Year Tourism High
45.5% more foreign tourists visited the Spanish region of Murcia in the first five months of 2014 compared to the same period last year. This is the highest official figure since 2009 and British visitors account for almost half. Chris Mercer, Director of estate agent Mercers which has been established in Murcia 20 years, says, “As a region, Murcia is not a big-hitter in tourism terms, dwarfed by the likes of Catalunya and the Balearics in sheer volume, but there are encouraging signs that it could be moving up through the ranks. The fact is Murcia and the Costa Calida have been rather unknown, even among Spaniards, but with talk of the Paramount Theme Park and general increased publicity, It has awareness is being raised. attractive villages, a beautiful coastline, historic cities such as Cartagena, Lorca and the capital Murcia, and one of the best year-round climates in Spain. It’s also far more affordable thanks to its rather inconspicuous nature.” According to Frontur, Spain’s Institute of Tourism Studies, a total of 266,311 foreign tourists visited Murcia between January and May this year, 83,220 more than the same five months in 2013 – a 45.5% increase. The UK is the main source country contributing 49.2% of the total - a huge 57% increase over 2013. French visitors come in second place
with an 11.7% share, up 15.7% on last year. In third are the Nordic countries, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, with a 10.6% share, again up a significant 48.7% over 2013. Taking May in isolation, the increase of foreign visitors to the Region was even more incredible at 60%, far higher than Spain’s main tourist hotspots with the Canaries only receiving 12.9% more, Catalunya 2.3% and the Balearics 1.2%. Expenditure is also up with foreign visitors splurging 259.5 million euros in Murcia from January to May, up 38.8% on the same period in 2013. This is far higher than the national average increase of 9.1%. Brits make up 47% of the spending, with many of them owning second homes in the Region. Spain, as a whole, has recorded 21,435,167 international tourists for the first five months of 2014, up 8.2% on 2013, with the nation braced for yet another record-breaking year for tourism. What is a thread count?
Good quality bed linen is supplied with a thread count. Woven fabric is made up of a warp thread (running vertically) and a weft thread (horizontally). The ‘thread count’ is used to describe the number of these threads per square inch. The general rule is that the higher the thread count, the more superior the quality of your bed linen.
Which fabric is suitable for you?
Cotton: It’s not surprising that cotton is the most important non-food commodity in the world. Hairs from the tropical cotton plant are spun into yarn, then cloth. It’s low maintenance, versatile and affordable.

Cotton Percale: This is a variation on the regular cotton where the cotton yarn is given a combed treatment. This gives the bed linen a lovely smooth finish and with a thread count of over 180, it has a high quality feel about it. Linen: Linen is made from yarn made out of fibres from the flax plant. It is a heavier, stronger fibre than cotton, creating a fabric that is smoother and with a very unique drape. It is an excellent conductor of heat and does not retain any moisture - these qualities make linen both snug and really comfortable. Linen is a luxury yarn. To keep bed linen affordable, a combination of linen and cotton brings the qualities of both yarns together. Cotton Sateen: This is a weaving technique that is slightly more expensive to weaving classic cotton cloth. This different process produces a bed linen that is incredibly soft to handle and has a fabulous sheen. Often Chambray: referred to as ‘yarn dye’, chambray is made up of
a warp and weft thread of different colours. This weaving technique gives a smart, sophisticated look to plain cotton bed linen. Silk: Originating from China, silk fabric is made from the continuous fibre the silk caterpillar makes to cocoon itself during its transformation into a moth. In the manufacturing process, fibres from several cocoons are twisted together to make a yarn of suitable thickness for weaving. It commands a high price tag, but its superb dyeing qualities make it a true luxury fabric that needs care and attention to keep it looking good.

braben’s blog... Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. In previous articles I have tried to explain the work involved in re-building the Operating System and some of the hard work that the members of the Albox Computer Club put in for the PIRdA charity. The number of times that people have asked how long a re-installation will take and therefore how much it will cost, just to be stunned into silenced by the answer, not realising just how much work they are getting for their money! Such is life :-) There are many reasons why your valuable data (Pictures. Music, Documents, etc) might be deleted. The most common is “User Error”, where in a moment of absent mindedness we select delete rather than copy, cut or any other normal action. Fortunately the lost file(s) will end up in the recycle bin (What the Americans call “Trash” - the etymology of which will forever escape me!). So, why is this so fortunate? Well no matter which version of “Windows” you are using, there will be a “Recycle Bin” (Doesn’t that sound so much better than “trash can”!). The “Recycle Bin” is a temporary storage location that holds, not only the deleted file(s) (in a renamed format), but also an index of the deleted files containing their real names and where they come from on the disk. So, why on earth would you want to put a deleted file into a place where you can get it back? As was said earlier, to err is human, to forget or have a lapse of thought, happens! During this erring or lapse it is easy to hit the wrong button! Not all is lost though! As all deleted or erased (the terms are used interchangeably and have been since way back when) files are stored safely in the “Recycle Bin” they can be returned to their proper place with a simple set
of key strokes. 1) Double Click (Left mouse button) the “Recycle Bin” to open a window displaying its contents. 2) Select, by a single click (again left mouse button), on the file to be recovered. 3) Go to the menu bar at the top of the window and click (Yep you guessed it, Left mouse Button) on the menu option “File”. 4) The very first sub-menu option is “Restore”, this you should click on (left – you got it :-)). 5) Now know with absolute confidence that your file is back where it belongs! Doesn’t that now fill you with the confidence that almost everything is reversible! Good! The next task is to ensure that whatever is in the “Recycle Bin” that need not be there, is deleted. This is just as simple but should be done deliberately and knowing that when it is gone, it will take someone like me, time and expense (yours and mine) to find and restore it. Just follow these steps 1) Right mouse click over the “Recycle Bin” and you will see a “floating menu”. Near the bottom will be the option “empty the recycle bin”. 2) Right click on the option. Your “Recycle Bin” will now be clean and empty! For those of you that I will meet Friday, I am looking forwards to it. For everyone else, the next article is already being written. You know where I am and how to get hold of me should your computer be attacked by a virus or it slows to a snail’s pace. I’m now off to Jack’s Bar in Albox for my Friday afternoon computer clinic! So wishing you all the very best, have a lovely and trouble free week until next week.

Abandon hope all ye that enter - Part II Armed with our cut out paper kitchen we returned to the big blue that’s IKEA, they’ve the same layout the world over. The room designs are upstairs and the Market Place below. There’s no escape as to get out, the entire store has to be traversed. It’s worse than airports where the gates are only accessible by funnelling passengers through the ludicrously overpriced ‘duty free’ shop. Armed with free pencils, brochures and our trusty diagram we zigzagged our way past acres of beds and sofas until reaching the relative calm of the kitchen zone. Oh joy! We opened cupboards and drawers revealing all manner of gadgets and discussed the minutiae of what door handles would look best. We waited to be seated at a desk where the yellow people turn dreams into reality. I noticed that people who’d arrived after us were jumping the queue. That’s
Calorie countdown!
You know, the amount of stuff that we don’t know is amazing. I suppose you could argue that, really, there is too much going on in the world for us to know everything and there’s an awful lot out there that we wouldn’t really want to know. For example, I could have survived quite happily without knowing that Justin Bieber’s favourite animal is a giraffe. Of course it is. But having said that, there are some little nuggets out there that just have to be shared-and I’m not talking about chicken nuggets either. Did you know that we spend about 6 years of our lives eating? No, neither did I, but according to research, it’s true. Now that being the case, is it any wonder that, at any one time, it would seem that the majority of people you know are on a diet. The latest fad is the cabbage soup diet. Apparently it works very well, but it does sound pretty disgusting, not to mention mind numbingly boring. So with this in mind, I’ve uncovered some different ways for you to shed a few pounds, without resorting to unappetising foods or hours of exercise. First of all, singing in the shower. I won’t ask if you do it or not- after seeing Psycho I feel safer singing in the shower. I can only just put up with the sound of my singing so I’m sure Norman Bates would run a mile. But if you do like the odd bit of shower singing, then that can burn off 10-20 calories. Okay, you’re not going to look like a finely honed athlete overnight, but you can do it every day and you’ll be the cleanest thin person in town. I’d tell you exactly how many calories you’d lose by singing in the shower everyday for a week, but I’ve lost my calculator. Then if you’re looking to lose a lot, try sitting up all night fidgeting. Yes, if you fidget you can lose up to 350 calories a day whilst a sleepless night gets rid of over 160 of the pesky things. To facilitate this look after as many babies in a week as you can, then you’ll achieve thinness in pretty short order. I just had to end with another Justin Bieber fact. Apparently President Obama hasn’t got him on his iPod. He gets my votePresident Obama, not Justin Bieber! Graham is married to Helen and has a daughter, Alice. He lives part of the year near Albox, but works in Qatar, teaching. If you wish to contact Graham regarding this article email: helenandg@yahoo.co.uk

not British I thought! I saw them handing in pagers to the yellow people. No signs to tell hapless souls what to do but we found another queue to wait for a pager, then we queued again. Just an hour later and we were beeped to come and sit at a high table on very uncomfortable stools. Yellow girl admired our diagram as it would make her job easier. Her fingers whizzed over the keyboard and our virtual but empty kitchen was soon on the screen in front of us. The centre piece of our kitchen was a wall unit that held the fridge freezer alongside wall to ceiling basket shelves. As an estate agent I’d seen these wonderful things in owner’s kitchens and made no secret of my desire to possess one myself. After wasting 3 hours of my life on the IKEA website the other day, it was the first, last and only thing I had managed to put into our virtual kitchen. Ironically disaster struck as yellow girl told us the unit was discontinued. So
back to the drawing board and our jigsaw was now next to useless. We sat for another hour and a half on the painful stools and rearranged our kitchen. Time came to print off our order list and pay. Hmm, that seems expensive we thought but at least we had pretty pictures of our kitchen to be from all angles and reasoned yellow girl knew what she was doing. But when we asked to pay, yellow girl twisted the knife and told us we couldn’t as a man had to come and measure up. Yellow girl threw us to the ground and gave us a good kicking telling us we would then have to return and repeat the whole ordering process again before paying. Why had we asked IKEA to build the units? Off we trudged through fields of furniture to reach the stairs down to the burning fires of hell; otherwise known as the ‘Market Place!’ IKEA designed this area using Dante’s
nine circles of hell as the template. Entire families gormlessly shuffle past stacks of stuff. Huge trolleys break feet and ankles, crying children add to the maelstrom. There’s no escape; all 9 circles of hell must be passed to reach salvation. First up limbo, people randomly stop in front of us. Second lust, shiny things piled invitingly everywhere. Third is gluttony, just one more hotdog. Fourth is greed, second course of pizza. Fifth is anger as humanity and IKEA are hated in equal measure. Sixth is heresy as I question the existence of God. Seventh is violence, I want to run everyone through with an IKEA curtain rail. Eighth is fraud as I wonder if I can get away with paying for one less flowery napkin pack than my wife has popped into her blue sack. Lastly is treachery as I consider making a break for it leaving Katherine admiring the garden furniture!

Software can decode bird songs Scientists have developed a highly advanced bird song decoder, which can automatically identify the call of a vast variety of birds The software brings the “cracking of the dawn chorus” one step closer. It used recordings of individual birds and of dawn choruses to identify the characteristics of each tweet. Dr Dan Stowell is lead author of the report, which was published in the Journal PeerJ. He told the BBC: “Given a set of recordings, each of them with a list of the bird species present, I was able to ‘train’ a computer system by showing it these labelled examples.” This technique is called “featurelearning”, which is an automatic analysis technique, used alongside a classification algorithm. According to the report, this automatically learned data can “often outperform” manually compiled information. The songs of hundreds of birds were analysed, including samples from the British Library Sound Archive. The best results were gathered from the biggest dataset ever gathered: Brazilian recordings of more than 500 single birds. Dr Stowell said: “Birdsong is extremely complex. The simplest sounds are often the most difficult, because they can sound so alike.” He believes that existing software doesn’t work well because it’s not specific enough. This piece of work has found that bird sound classification is possible at a very large scale. “If you go out in to a forest and want to know what you hear, there
are hundreds of possible results. Now we are closer to having an app that can really let us do that.” Dr Stowell is now working on technology that can do even more than just identify the bird. He wants to try to decode the actual relationships between them. By analysing the call of a species of goldfinch, he is close to working out which birds are in pairs - just by their sound. The tool has implications for the understanding of different areas, including ecology and conservation. It may also help our understanding of the human voice. “The sound of humans and birds are two completely separately evolved systems,’ said Dr Stowell. “But they do very similar things. For example chicks learn how to tweet from older birds, and in parallel children learn to speak by learning from adults.” An interesting consequence of this is that birds have regional accents. “Skylarks can recognise local birds and ones that have come from further away by the vocals they have learned.” However, Dr Stowell acknowledges that there is still some way to go. The researchers weren’t able to make much significant progress on identifying all the birds singing in the dawn chorus. “This is very complicated. It’s a very difficult but interesting problem. And this brings us one step closer.” Read more on: www.bbc.com

Visiting the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre on July 11 were (from left) councillor Derek Monks, Rojales Mayor Antonio Pérez García, centre co-founder Sue Weeding, councillor Tatiana Cañizares and councillor Marie Pierre Dubois.
News Rojales mayor visits Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre to meet two horses saved in one week
Rojales Mayor Antonio Pérez García last week visited the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre in Rojales to commend founders Sue and Rod Weeding on their tireless work, after they were called out to save two old and abandoned horses in one week. On June 30, a skeletal horse was found dumped in a paddock near San Javier, where some other horses were being kept. Sue and Rod named the severely malnourished and old mare Lola and brought her home to the rescue centre. She has suffered acute muscle atrophy in her shoulder, which caused major deformity in her left front leg. “Our vet has never seen a case as far gone as this,” Sue said. “All we can do is give her the best quality of life possible using special supplements and remedial shoeing.” Just six days later, Sue and Rod received another call from a woman worried about an old horse left tied to palm trees without food or water for three days. “This old horse was just worked into the ground until he couldn’t walk and then they dumped him,” Sue said. “He has badly damaged tendons on his right front leg and must have been in incredible pain. He’s probably only got a year left because eventually the leg will collapse but we will do whatever is possible for him.” The police responded immediately to the case and are now looking to prosecute the owner. “We cannot emphasize enough that you have to call the police if you see an animal in danger or distress,” Sue said. “Here in Rojales, they have an officer dedicated to animal welfare and they will act. People have to contact the police because this is how we get convictions.” Mayor Antonio, who toured the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre on July 11, congratulated Sue and Rod on their work in the animal welfare sector, saying without the centre many rescued horses and ponies would have to be put down because there was nowhere else to send them. “It’s great that people like Sue and Rod are doing this kind of work because without them, there would be very little for these animals,” he said. “Taking care of more than 80 horses is very hard work at very great expense. Without the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre, the lives of these animals would be much shorter and much worse.” Sue and Rod are encouraging the British community and other foreign residents to register to vote before next year’s May council elections. “We’re very lucky to have such a forwardthinking council, which is actively working against animal abuse and neglect. With their support, we have made huge steps forward,” Sue said. “Residents must get involved because we can’t afford to lose people like this who care about animal welfare. This is the way that animal welfare will move forward in this part of Spain.” The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre is now preparing to open their eighth charity store at Gran Alicant and need volunteers to help staff the shop. A van driver is also desperately needed one day a week for furniture pick-ups and deliveries. Any donations of good quality furniture, clothes and bric-a-brac to help stock the store are also gratefully welcomed. Please contact the charity shop hotline on 652 021 980 for more information about furniture pick-ups and volunteering. The public is invited to meet the many animals saved from abuse and neglect during Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre’s Sunday open days from 1pm-4pm. Entrance is free and guided tours begin at 2pm. Tasty food and refreshments are available in the garden café. EHCRC is located just outside Rojales at Partido Lo Garriga 59. For more details and directions to the centre, please visit www.easyhorsecare.net.

2014 Summer Season To Spark Wave Of Autumn Viewing Trips?
When schools break up and families jet off next week, hordes of British holidaymakers are about to witness just how attractive property prices in hot spots like Spain’s Costa Blanca and Portugal’s Algarve have become due to the stronger pound, combined with ongoing low prices in Europe. during the first half of 2014 are typically up across Mediterranean hot spots compared to 2013, but the annual post-Summer holiday surge should be even more noticeable this year if the pound maintains – or increases – the gains it has made against the euro. “The decision to buy a second home often starts with a browse in estate agents’ windows during a holiday - and for tourists returning to a favourite resort, conditions might sway them to purchase a home there this year. “Holidaymakers should be wary not to make any commitments, however, before doing research, thinking through their purchase and protecting their interests. Using the holiday to note down details of estate agencies, decide on their preferred areas and pick up some free newspapers, without using up much of their ‘holiday’ time is always worth it though. There’s plenty to be gained from returning to the resort for a few days once the kids are back at school, having had time to put a few things in place, such as opening an account with a currency specialist and earmarking some properties to view.” Source: www.smartcurrencyexchange.com

For the first time since the crisis erupted back in 2008, official statistics are beginning to show signs of improvement in the Spanish business sector. So far this year, the census of companies, which is controlled by the Social Security, has seen an increase of more than 45,000 companies, representing a growth which has not been seen in the last six years. In June 2014, the total number of companies registered in the general social security system was 1,423,550. The last time that figure was reached was in June 2012. The information provided in the census also gives a fairly accurate analysis of each sector, and from that perspective the news is particularly good for the construction industry and services, particularly for the services associated with the tourism sector. Around one in four of the new companies included in the Social Security’s business census, which is updated every month, is operating in the construction industry or in closely related activities. The number of companies engaged in the construction of buildings in Spain has increased by about 4,000 so far this year, reaching a total of 54,539. This momentum has also led to a resurgence in the auxiliary industry, all those companies involved in land surveys, electrical installation, glazing, plumbing, and all

sorts of other building-related activities, which suffered greatly from the bursting of the real estate bubble, with the disappearance of nearly 20,000 companies, and in 2014 – as a result of the economic recovery and stimulus measures such as flat rates for new self-employed and fixed contracts – has seen the creation of over 5,000 new businesses. The Social Security data shows that the impetus has also reached the real estate sector, as the creation of more than a thousand new companies dedicated to this business have been registered in Spain in 2014. According to a report published by idealista.com, the other major sector of activity to prominently feature in the business census during the first part of the year is tourism. In the first six months of 2014 the number of bars, cafes, pubs, food stalls and restaurants in Spain has increased by more than 16,000, while the number of companies related to accommodation services (hotels, inns, lodges, farmhouses, hostels etc.) has increased by 2,795. The favourable expectations in this area have also encouraged the commercial segment – where 3,500 new companies have been incorporated – and the entertainment sector, which has seen the creation of 1,189 new companies. • Our panels are Spanish manufactured by Eurener (rated top 10 in the world) and carry an insurance warranty to be 80% efficient or more at 25 years old. In order to attain this warranty, the manufacturer actually over manufacture the panel (when new a 250W panel actually produces more than 250W) in order to ensure that after 25 years it attains an efficiency of over 80%. The warranty is underwritten by one of the big insurance house, such as Lloyds of London and Zurich. So down the road it doesn’t matter whether the manufacturer or my company is still operating, your panels are still under a working warranty. Each panel has its own unique ID number for this purpose. • Victron Energy in our opinion are the best Off grid inverters. When I say Off Grid, these are designed for power systems that do not have mains electricity. They will automatically start and stop generators and can switch between PV, batteries and generator (and mains on the Quattro model) in less than 0.02 of a second. This switching speed is seamless and hence its adaption to use with homes that have mains electricity. We wire the mains electricity into the inverter along with the batteries and PV array; the system automatically monitors all of these constantly and can switch

between them faster than a power cut. Hence your home has constant uninterrupted power. • The mounting structure and fittings we use for the PV mounting system is all Inox Aluminium with a 15 year warranty. It is not angle iron or steel. The fittings can be security fitted also so make theft of your panels very difficult and very noisy at least. Cutting aluminium with a grinder is both loud and generates a lot of sparks even with the correct equipment. • Ecocorp are the Official Installers for Victron Energy in the Almeria and Murcia Regions. Hence we have to attend the courses at Victron for product training and software updates, in return we are given a 5 year warranty on the inverters and charge controllers
Tulip Fever by Deborah Moggach “I gazed into the water and saw a dream world, mirroring my own, where I could be happy. How wrong I was. For it was nothing-just the glitter of moonlight on the surface, the sheeny satin lustre of a dress.” The author admitted to having had a love affair (so to speak) with Dutch paintings. What emerged was a loveletter sadly reflecting on the lost world of serene and dreamy domestic interiors otherwise known as Tulip Fever. We are plunged into the 17C world of Amsterdam that saw the rise and obsession of tulip mania during the 1630s, at its worst symbolising human greed and passion. It made many men rich beyond their wildest dreams but once the bubble burst it brought inevitable ruin and destruction. Sophia was 24, innocent and oblivious to the evils of the world. When her father had died leaving unmarried daughters and lots of debts, Cornelis, a wealthy merchant who owned a warehouse in the harbour which imported grain from the Baltic and rare spices from the Orient had agreed to marry Sophia and support
instead of the 2 year that other companies can offer. We also have all the Victron programming software and understand how to configure your inverter to maximise its efficiency for your individual needs. When installing, our engineers will ask you a number of questions and configure the system accordingly. They then return 2 weeks later once the system has been in operation for a short time to make any fine adjustments using the information that they download form your system. Most other companies buy these units from a distributor and install them with the factory settings. They do not have the software and knowhow to do any more. • The first week or so of your batteries greatly determines their life. How they are used and how far they discharged
her family. He was a good Calvinist although Sophia was a Catholic. His faith had been battered with the death of his first wife, Hendrijke when she was barely 40 and his two sons who had died in infancy. He was 61, longing for an heir. He does care about his young wife and worries that she has become withdrawn, no longer the lively, happy girl he had fallen in love with. “She had brought him back to life when he had given up all hope. She rescued him, just as he himself, in another way entirely, had rescued her.” Maria, their servant was a robust and passionate woman crazy about Willam her darling sweetheart. Life was so uncomplicated for her and she knew that she would marry him, have six children and live in blissful contentment. Eventually, but with a few major complications. The painter, Jan van Loos is engaged to paint a family portrait and Sophia encounters passionate love that will bring about ruin, a heavy price to pay. REVIEW it by Carol Naylor. www.carolnaylor.blogspot.com / www.carolesleynaylor.wordpress. com naylorcl@hotmail.es
for the first few cycles plays a large part in their longevity. Programming the inverter to maximise this saves you money in the long term. • If you have mains electricity with the dual tariff (white meter), you want a system that will maximise this. Ideally in the day you want to be on solar and the batteries carry you through to the period that your cheap electricity starts. Again, sizing the system and scaling it correctly will help you attain this goal and hence maximise your savings. • Ecocorp are fully legal and have both Spanish and English qualified engineers. We are not plumbers or electricians who have turned our hands to solar, solar is all we do. Telephone 950 930 187 / 671 716 597

The tail of the Fox and the Hound
APAH is looking for a long-term foster home for a 12 year old dog called Roddy. Although his health in general is good, he has arthritis in his back legs, so would be more comfortable in a home environment during the colder months than living in kennels. Any medical expenses for Roddy would be covered by APAH. If you would like to meet Roddy, please contact Yvonne on 630 422 563.

This cute couple are a real-life version of Disney cartoon classic The Fox and the Hound - although with a twist in the tail. The fox was rescued by a mystery tourist after being discovered in a puddle in a field outside Newquay, Cornwall, earlier this year. The malnourished four-week-old cub was rushed to Penmellyn Vets in St Columb Major, where nurses noticed he was missing his tail - inspiring them to name him Forrest Stump. The fox cub was taken under the wing by Gary Zammit, a wildlife ranger at Feadon Farm at Gwel an Mor in Cornwall, well known for his love of foxes. Mr Zammit said: “He was in an awful state when they found him and it was touch and go for a long time. A fox this young can go downhill very quickly, so he needed round the clock care. “It’s a bit like having a new born with night time feeds and constant attention.” But he was not on his own - the cub quickly establishing a firm friendship with the Zammit’s dog Barney - who also has no tail. “It really was love at first sight with them both. Barney is so gentle with him and they play for hours and hours. They are exhausting to watch,” the ranger added. “I think they might be kindred spirits - even without tails to wag you can tell they are happiest when they are together.” The duo now spend all their time playing and snuggling together - meaning that this is one “tail” with a happy ending.

Wanted: Geek
I enjoy driving, especially here in Spain, where the roads are good and seem under-used, and rain and fog are virtually unheard of. Such a contrast to the journey I used to make to work, which necessitated leaving a lane and joining a B road in the depth of Devon. To do so I had to recklessly squeeze my car’s bonnet into any gap which appeared in the nose-to-tail grind, and pray that the rest of the car would fit in unscathed. From then on all I had to do was: Watch out for the BMW coming up behind in a determined effort to overtake at least six cars in a row, regardless of whether he could slot back in or not. Apply the

brakes the instant that the car in front stood on his, because the BMW had just cut in and sliced off his car’s front mirror and bumper, while praying that at that moment the driver three inches from my back bumper was not texting his girlfriend. And then there were the road kills – I’m surprised that rabbits, pheasants and badgers are not endangered species, so great was the number of their splattered remains along the verges. I rose, tranquil and calm, above these daily dangers. I did not get rattled or road raged, at least not until I encountered Spanish drivers and roundabouts! Spanish drivers love indicators – they pop the Hazards on at every opportunity, but can they use them to indicate a change of direction? Apparently that is as unreasonable a request as asking them to use a litter bin! It annoys the hell
out of me! I approach the roundabout, see a car coming and not indicating, assume it is going on round, only for it to slide off at the previous exit, leaving Del sitting waiting unnecessarily in first gear, and me ready to commit murder! But I have a scheme – a scheme to turn adversity into prosperity – all I need is a geek! A geek who can invent an in-car gizmo which I can activate, and which will recognise the owner of the offending car through the number plate. The gizmo will then access their bank account, hack their passwords, and extract a modest sum, say 10€, which it will then pay in to a secret Swiss bank account in my name. I’m not greedy, nobody is going to miss 10€ immediately, and by the time they do I will be rich beyond the dreams of avarice! Any geeks interested? Contact me using the secret password – Roundabout.
alqueria Pilar of the corner shop John MacDonald (El Sordo) - www.caratacus.eu
On the corner of the Calle Generalissimo and Calle del Siniestra sits a little shop owned and operated by Pilar del Redondorodillas. Pilar is a lady of remarkable beauty, curvaceous, sensual and definitely worth a second look. Second looks are certainly cast in Pilar’s direction but only as long as Manuela isn’t within sight. Pilar has always been second to Manuela. Manuela was always curvier, straighter backed and her personality just that more sparkling as to keep Pilar firmly in her shadow. Pilar consulted her mirror with the time honoured question concerning the fairest of all. Pilar always received the time honoured reply. “No sorry old girl it’s still Manuela”, the mirror would reply drooling at the mention of the name. Obviously a male mirror or perhaps not. Pilar decided that the time had come for the mirror to change its tune. Her shop, among other items sold Remitroot products. Remitroot Aphrodisiac which she sold in a plain brown paper bag was often bought by Manuela to guarantee the success of her heavier weekends. Pilar would substitute a potion. She consulted one of the many practising hechiceras in the village. To save money however she sought advice from one Luciana Scaremorea a cut-price witch. She was cut-price due to being completely useless. She once attempted to cure Rodriquez’s gout and accidentally turned his pet Enggano Rat into a Tory politician. The enchanted rat was promptly elected MP for the Balmyborough constituency. Using a mortar and pestle Luciana mixed various fluids and appendages of mammals, insects and plants. How she obtained the insect fluid was a question waiting to be asked but Pilar erred on the
side of discretion. The result was a fine paste, deep green in colour with purple flecks and an extremely disturbing odour. Luciana swore that this mixture once swallowed by Manuela would give her skin the texture of the Horned Alquerian Axolotl, making her totally unattractive to men. Pilar carefully transferred the precious paste into an empty Remitroot Aphrodisiac container. She placed it inside a plain brown paper bag and waited for Manuela to collect and consume her order. Now the old adage ‘you get what you pay for’ held very true in this situation. The cut-price witch Luciana had mixed the right ingredients but in the wrong proportions. The ‘axolotl’ part of the potion had very little effect apart from producing a very cute mole on Manuela’s nether regions. The ‘horned’ part worked with great effect and made Manuela more adventurous and ingenious than before. She was now even more popular with the male population. Pilar was furious while Manuela placed a standing order for the potion.

Setting the Record Straight – But Same Result Some time ago, a group of French academics gathered at the Medieval History Museum at Agincourt in France for a conference aimed at ‘setting the record straight’ regarding the English victory over the French in 1415 near the village where the museum is situated. It was also a good excuse for necking some fine wine and foie gras I shouldn’t wonder. The museums director, distinguished historian Christophe Gilliott said that historians would be attending from all over France to present hard facts disproving the generally accepted account of the battle and he went on to say that at the very least, the English behaved dishonourably. Oh no! I wonder if he means that the English and Welsh bowmen jeered and called the French knights nasty names and rudely gestured with the two fingered salute which of course would be historically correct. In fact the now famous V sign (not the Churchillian victory one but the less than polite ‘up yours’ variety) is believed to have originated during the Hundred Years War when captured English archers had their index and middle fingers chopped off by their French captors to prevent them firing another arrow in anger . . . not exactly an honourable act either in my book. This now familiar gesture therefore, was a mocking challenge to the enemy that everything was in
working order and there was another arrow waiting with Pierre’s name on it. It’s interesting to note that the draw weight of an English long bow was around 100lb give or take and it’s probable that three fingers, not to mention a lot of muscle, would be needed to achieve maximum curve of the bow. This power combined with the momentum of a charging mounted knight, would have had a devastating effect. It has to be said though, that there are pseudo academics out there who cast doubt on this theory, but who interestingly rarely have an alternative explanation. So until somebody comes up with one, I go along with the amputation story which makes perfect sense to me and sounds typical of dark English humour. It’s also worth being reminded that all the academics involved in this conference were French and so hardly surprising that the English were slated and accused of a distortion of history. Only the French would bend over backwards to discredit the English after 600 years and it makes me wonder if future generations of French children will be taught that General de Gaulle master minded the invasion of Europe from his head quarters in London in 1944 and threw the German forces back with the aid of a little British
and American help. But that’s me being cynical. As far as the numbers in terms of man power for both armies is concerned, even British historians and academics recognise the fact that they have been grossly exaggerated by the English in order to make the victory appear
far more impressive than it was. Rather than being seriously outnumbered by badbirdnow@gmail.com the French as many history
By Colin Bird :
books recount – by as much as 10-1 in some cases - the English army was only at a slight disadvantage with the French fielding 12,000 men and the English about 9,000 having lost 3,000 at the siege of Harfleur which included 1,200 men left to garrison the captured town. Still, the fact remains that it appears the French did have 30% superiority in numbers. At the Agincourt conference the English were also accused of being nothing more than war criminals in their treatment of prisoners. Some accounts tell of King Henry giving the order to execute French prisoners who were being guarded behind the English lines and this is pretty much accepted by most historians. The order was given when Henry heard that French reinforcements were on their way and would be likely to attack the rear of his army. Against all the rules of chivalry and a brutal decision hard to justify in this day and age, the logic behind the order is clear to see. Medieval life was harsh and at times barbaric, particularly if you were an English archer and ex-prisoner of war, whose nice leather gloves the wife had bought him for Christmas weren’t going to get much use. The stories of how the tiny English army overcame massively superior forces would appear to be exaggerated – and Will Shakespeare is as much to blame as anybody here. But it must be nice to have the free time on your hands in order to find excuses why your army were routed by a smaller force, especially after such a lapse of time. The fact remains however that a smaller English army did annihilate the French forces at Agincourt in what has been recognised as one of the most significant battles in English history.

New Ford Mustang performance specs revealed
Ford has confirmed performance details for the US-spec Ford Mustang 2015, with the flagship V8 getting 429bhp
The new Mustang is edging ever nearer to launch, and Ford has geared up its preparations by announcing official performance figures for US spec models. Three engines will be offered from launch: a V6, V8 and the brand new turbocharged four-cylinder Ecoboost unit, each available with a manual or six-speed SelectShift automatic gearbox. The standard V6 comes generates 296bhp, while the new 2.3litre four-cylinder engine manages 306bhp and 434Nm of torque. Developed specifically by the American manufacturer for the Mustang, it adds turbocharging and direct injection to the engine line-up. Ever-synonymous with V8 engines, the latest incarnation of Ford’s iconic muscle car will feature a revised 5.0-litre unit that apparently benefits from lessons learned during development of the special-edition 2012 Mustang Boss 302. It tops the range, with Stateside customers having 429bhp and 542Nm at their disposal. For the six-speed automatic transmission, Ford has fitted new steering-wheel-mounted shift paddles for drivers who want a bit more control when the opportunity arises, backed up by revmatching downshifts. UK price and specification details will be revealed nearer to the Mustang’s launch over here early next year. We’ll only be getting the EcoBoost and V8 engines, with a £30,000 starting price expected.
Innovation is the fuel that drives British business and importantly keeps it ahead of the rest of the world Auto-Sleepers, the Cotswolds, UK based manufacturer of motorhomes is a fine example of such a forward thinking business. You see the last time I got behind the wheel of an Auto-Sleeper – about 14 months ago now – there were two cumbersome LPG Calor Gas bottles for the heating, hot water and cooking. They were a hassle because you had to remember to turn them on every time you stopped and when you set off you had to turn them off. Then of course when they ran out it was a matter of traipsing round to find an outlet that sold replacements – and they were heavy. So when I was confronted with the Auto-Sleeper Windrush I was pleasantly surprised to find that the LPG bottles had been removed. “Where are they?” I ask Ed, the salesman at Marquis Motorhomes. “There’s an LPG tank below the floor. This gives more room because it doesn’t impinge on the interior space.” It seems much easier to operate as well because you don’t need to worry about turning it off and on. When the tank is empty it can simply be filled up at most petrol stations. There’s also a helpful gauge on the dashboard alerting you to the fuel level. Sales are so buoyant at Marquis that the motorhome that had been put aside for us had been sold. Demand comes from both home and abroad. Buyers vary from middle aged parents with children through to retired people wanting to travel. Australians and New Zealanders buy them to take
back home with them. This is a truly internationally business and I can see why it is so popular when you consider the cost of hotels and the fact that with a motorhome the world really is your oyster because you are not tied to any one location. This model is a four-berth conversion of a Peugeot Boxer. There are bunk beds at the far rear, ideal for the children, a shower and toilet, cooker and fridge. We venture to parts of Surrey we haven’t been to before. The 2.2-litre diesel engine is fairly quiet from the inside and the six speed manual gearbox is smooth to use. It happily travels at 70mph on the motorway and will return about 30mpg allowing for around 500 miles to be covered on a tank. Recalling escapades of the past we head for somewhere flat so that we don’t sleep at an awkward angle. We find this at Broadwater near a lake. The first night with our two young daughters, Harriett (3) and Heidi (1) could have been better. They finally settle down to sleep in their bunks at around 10pm – the curtain covered bunk bed ladder filling the gap on Heidi’s bed so that she is safe and secure. But by 2am they awake again. The first night of any adventure is always a problem for them because of the unfamiliar. It also takes us a little while to understand how to properly operate the heating, which doesn’t help matters. By the third and final night however, we all enjoy our best night’s sleep.
Despite the temperature dropping during the night the heater on the third setting provides a comfortable environment. There are various sliding windows and flip up sunroofs that allow fresh air into the van while there are also extractor fans for the cooking and the toilet. The addition of the sliding door is much appreciated when the weather’s nice because it can be opened while enjoying a meal. The sliding door also makes loading the vehicle easier. When travelling in such vehicles it is always best to travel with as little luggage as possible because any clutter hinders the enjoyment. Needless to say that our tandem pushchair has to be stored in the aisle while driving and then in the
front when parked. It is helpful that the front seats swivel because this provides extra seating. The luxury fabrics and the lighting help make the interior appealing. Our location is ideal because we are not far from the park, which our daughters love and we are able to walk to Godalming along the towpath by the canal, which is very enjoyable. Godalming is a thriving historic market town with two art galleries and a third one rumoured to be opening. At the village of Puttenham we enjoy a stroll in the afternoon sunshine and at Haslemere there is a fair where Harriett enjoys driving a car. Watch the videos at www.travelwriter.biz By Tim Saunders

Quesada Golf Society
TMGS Match Report for Alenda
Last Wednesday the society played at Alicante which is situated just north of the city in the suburb of San Juan just inland from its superb beach. The course has a good variety of holes with 6 Par 3’s, 6 Par 4’s and 6 Par 5’s and presents a challenge for all golfers. Most of the holes are surrounded by villas and apartments and there is a lot of distance and tunnel’s to drive through and roads to cross between green and tee. The course is certainly not recommended for walkers particularly at this time of year. Buggies were a must have. The course was in fantastic playing condition and, although it was hot, there was little wind so playing conditions were absolutely perfect. No excuses then. However, a few of the old lads got distracted by the sights off the golf course in and around the communal pools along some of the fairways. Golf is about concentration not distraction but some certainly succumbed to the sight of skimpy bikini clad senorita’s which may have affected a shot or two. The competition was an individual Stableford with only one division due to a small turn-out. It is that time of year. The game was for the Summer Cup or “Hand of God” – no connection with “Maradona” I hasten to add. All the prizes were kindly sponsored by David & Anita of the Quesada Country Club. The winner with 37 points was Darrylldinho Wright who is coming to terms with his new driver, which has improved his play, but will no doubt see his handicap severely cut. In Second place
On this day in history in 1962 John Glenn, the first American to orbit the Earth, lands safely in the Atlantic Ocean; that was just 52 years ago and many of us were in our teens – plus VAT! 21 turned up to the delightful and wellkept course of Alenda where we were treated to, once again, a very affordable green fee with buggy and a very much in form course where the fairways were in very fine shape, as were the greens and the course is a tribute to the green staff. It never ceases to amaze me how this course always appears to be “empty”, but maybe the location is the key. The day was just about perfect for golf with a slight breeze sometimes helping the flight of the ball but of course, also not helping. It must be said that the scores were fairly decent and there were quite a few returns in the 30’s, which is the “benchmark” that most golfers try to achieve to signal a decent knock around the course. Anyway, results on the day were, as I said, decent and it took 32 points for the “Belfast Bandit” Ernie Wilson to claim 3rdspot in the Silver Division, 36 for Alex Goslan to claim 2nd spot with Mick Kennedy once again claiming the top slot (and a certain handicap cut) with 39mpoints and that was the best score on the day.
16th July 2014
was “young” Tony White with 30 points and in third place with 28 points was “old” David Winchcombe, who may have lost a bit of distance but certainly not accuracy. This was proved as he also won 2 “nearest the pins” with Charlie Wallace winning the other. The “Roy” for the most shots played was won by no other than the man who donated the “Roy”, Roy (Kavanagh) himself. To be fair to Roy, he injured his hand on the practice range and couldn’t grip a club properly but to his credit he persevered and played on. Well done Roy. After the game the players returned to the Quesada Country Club for the presentations and a well earned pint and a tasty hot and a cold buffet kindly laid on by mine hosts Dave and Anita. The next game is at Roda on Wednesday 30 July. Anyone in the Quesada area looking to join a very friendly golf society and play golf once a fortnight at a wide variety of courses at very reasonable cost, should contact the membership secretary Les Pancott on 966716723.
The Gold lads also needed 31 points and that score gave Hans Arvesen 3rd place and a full 4 points behind the runner-up, Darren Hancock with 35 points. Arne Hansson’s 36 points was more than enough to claim the top slot in that Division. Only 3 NTP’s were won and the following claimed a bottle of wine that was kindly sponsored by “Manuela resto bar Urb. Agua Marina Orihuela Costa”, Joe Dean (twice!) and Colin Marsden.Photo: SilverCategory Winners. Our next game, Wednesday 23rd July 2014, see’s us at Villamartin, so if you fancy a game just look at our website www.tmgs.org or call the Fixture Secretary on 966719604.
the hackers golf club
A great day was had by all as the Hackers played at the very sunny Bonalba Golf resort. The course which was in great condition played very well with players missing out on scoring further points. The overall winner was Colin Porter who was asked to remove his mask as the bandit scored 33 points. Jeff Wiszniswki came second with 27 points on his second outing with the Hackers. Colin the Bandit´s playing partner, Ian `Doodle Pops` Hillary finished third with 26 points. Secretary Mark ´sicknote´ Talbot playing for the second month in a row was fourth with 25 points. Colin Cripps, Corky ´one eye` Corcoran and Kev ¨cider man´ Marks finished fifth, sixth and seventh with 24,22 and 22 points. Kjel Dahl who brought his son with him as a guest scored 21 points closely followed by Ian Wadsworth on 20 points. The final four
members Roy Weallans, Gerry ´we are leeds´ Cooke, Malcolm ´skipper´ Tierney and Frank ´the champion´ Ramsey scored 19,17,14 and 10 points. With the Hackers were three guests that made up the 16 players. Two of which enjoyed it so much have decided to become members. Lee ´cricket mad´ Brown won the best guest with 29 points closely followed by Egil Dahl who shown his dad how it was done by scoring a respectable 26 points. George ´just retired´ Mercer finished with 19 points. If anyone is interested playing for the Hackers in a fun, relaxed and friendly environment please come alone and put your name down on the list either by going into the Woodstock pub on the Grey Area Urb. Marina or getting in touch with Secretary Mark Talbot on 634324719. All are welcome and will be made to feel at home.

TORREGOLF.EU at Roda Golf Tuesday 14th. saw a full contingent of members going to Roda for the first time and all were pleasantly surprised to see the course in very good condition. However, most found the front 9 fairly difficult but in contrast the back nine which was played first, a lot easier and some very good scores were recorded for example Alan Darby 25 points, Eric Garside 23 and both David Winder & Chris Butler scoring 22 for our normal Stableford Competition. At the end of the day the winners were Category 1. 1ST. Chris Butler 38 points 2nd. Alan Darby 37 and 3rd. Rob Marchant 36 points. Category 2. 1st. David Winder 38 points 2nd. Steve James 33 and 3rd.
