Urgent Appeal for Volunteers By Age Concern
Age Concern re-opens after the summer break on Monday 1st September and we are in need of more volunteers. Can you spare a few hours each week to help Age Concern? We need volunteers for our day Centre in La Siesta and our shops in Los Montesinos and Torrevieja. Additionally, we need volunteers to join our Residential
Home Visiting Team and to act as BeFrienders to elderly and lonely people in the Playa Flamenca, Quesada and Torrevieja areas. If you can help and would like more information on any of these roles please call in to the Age Concern Centre in La Siesta or phone Age Concern on 96 678 6887.
ANOTHER GOAL FOR THE LIONS
Last year our wonderful LEOS club was formed and inaugurated on the 28th March this year, this was the first independent LEOS CLUB in the whole of Spain. They have been working hard with their sponsors the MAZARRÖN BAHIÄ LIONS to raise money for their dream of a playing/ sports area for the youngsters of Camposol. Meanwhile behind the scenes the LIONS headed by Nigel Barker and Oscar Sanchez Lopez have been very busy communicating with the Mazarrón Council to obtain the licences and permits for such a venture. At long last the said licences
have been granted and work will commence in September clearing an area of 85 x 35 metres, which will eventually comprise of a Football field / Netball field and climbing frames to cater for all the youth of Camposol. However this will need more cash than we have collected so far so we need many SPONSORS to come forward and assist us in completing this project. Staff at Madrid’s Adolfo Suárez Barajas airport have called a strike for the last weekend of August to protest the privatization of Spain’s stateowned airport operator. AENA staff called off their initial strike for August 15th and 17th but have now decided to hold it from Friday 29th to Sunday 31st. CGT-Aena, the trade union representing the disgruntled airport workers, has sent out out a press release arguing that their call for negotiations with Spain’s Ministry of Public Works and Barajas authorities had fallen on deaf ears. Last June, Spain’s government announced it had agreed to sell a 49-percent stake in the state-owned
airport operator, a move CGT argues will put the country’s tourism industry “at great risk” and have a “negative impact” on flight security. The group claims they fear jobs, especially temporary ones, may be lost under private management and demand that Spain’s airports remain “financially, and socially sustainable”. According to Spanish news agency Europa Press, Barajas airport staff have announced they will strike from 3pm to 8pm on the 29th and from 7am to 10am and then 8pm to 12pm on Sunday 31st. Ferry company LD Lines has been slammed by customers and Spanish authorities after it announced it will be stopping its services from the southeastern UK city of Poole to Gijón and Santander in northern Spain The French shipping line has informed customers with tickets for after September 7th that their bookings have been cancelled. According to the BBC, “several hundred” people have been rebooked on Brittany Ferries routes which will drop them off at Portsmouth, 88 kilometres (55 miles) away from Poole. “(It’s) very frustrating,” disgruntled passenger Michael Glover told the BBC. “I’ve got to come back earlier than planned and there are cost implications
to that.
LD Lines said the decision came after a “business review” and that they had transferred passengers to other ferry services “as close as possible to their LD Lines booking”. Earlier this August, Gijón mayor Carmen Moyirón accused LD Lines of coming to her city “to receive €30 million in subsidies and then leave after four years.” Another route between the northern Spanish city and Saint Nazaire (near Nantes, France) is also facing possible closure in October due to LD Lines’s financial losses. Spanish scientists find distant ‘dying planet’
Astronomers at an observatory in Almería have become the first in Spain to find an ‘exoplanet’ – a world outside our solar system - with their discovery of Kepler-91b, a ‘dying’ world orbiting a red giant star some 3,360 light years from Earth. An international team of astrophysicists led by Jorge Lilo-Box and David Barrado at the GermanSpanish Astronomical Center at Calar Alto in southern Spain used computer simulation to analyze data from NASA’s Kepler space telescope to discover the alien world. Their findings were published in December and have now been accepted in the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics Letters.
The Kepler satellite telescope is designed to find Earth-like planets orbiting distant stars. It detects eclipses – changes in the brightness of starlight caused by planets passing in front them. In the case of the red giant star KIC 8219268, some 6.3 times bigger than the Sun, it was observed that a reduction in luminosity occurred every

At first it was thought that the reduction was a ‘false positive’, caused by light curve variations. Further investigations into the distortions of the star’s shape caused by the gravity of a passing object confirmed the presence of a planet, which was named Kepler-91b. It is only the 16th exoplanet to be confirmed by this method, of more than 1,800 exoplanets discovered so far in total. Despite being 35 percent bigger than Jupiter, the biggest star in our solar system, Kepler 91-b has 14 percent less mass, making it less than half as dense as water. The unlucky planet is constantly blasted by radiation from the nearby red giant. It is in the final stages of its life and will be swallowed by its mother star in approximately 55 million years. La Mercè Festival, Barcelona, September 19th-24th
Every year since 1902, the Catalan capital has held a massive street festival — the city’s biggest — in honour of the Virgin of La Mercè, patron saint of Barcelona. Over five days, you can enjoy hundreds of activities ranging from street dance shows and theatre performances to concert and folk dances. The festivities include traditional events like the impressive human castles (castellers) demonstrations and parades of ‘giants’ and ‘big-heads’.

For just a few hundred euros you can pick up a plot of land in Spain’s beautiful Cuenca province. Is there a catch, you ask? You’ll probably have to put up with being the youngest person in the village. With an average age of 75, Olmeda de la Cuesta’s 35 residents have officially made their village the place with the oldest population in Spain. Only 15 of them live there throughout the year, the local school closed down 40 years ago and even their mayor doesn’t live there. So why would anyone even contemplate living in this desolate hamlet in Spain’s arid Castilla and La Mancha region? A fresh start, and a cheap one at that. Olmeda de la Cuesta’s mayor José Luis Regacho announced recently he will be offering up large plots of land in the
village for as little as €600 ($800), or around the price of an Apple iPhone 5c. The only requirement he expects buyers to fulfill is either that they build a house or set up a business within the next two years and a half. “The current global economy can allow anyone to manufacture products here and sell them in Madrid, it’s just 160 kilometres (100 miles) away,” Regacho, who was born in the village, told Spanish TV channel La Sexta. Potential buyers won’t have to register at the local town hall and only have to pay a €150 deposit. Olmeda de la Cuesta has been fighting off extinction for several years now, dropping their initial €2,000 minimum investment to the current €600 due to the campaign’s limited success. HELP for RITA
Many will already be aware of the tragic accident that beset our friend and Treasurer Rita in July 2013. Rita was a major player in the Cat Neutering programme for San Juan de Los Terreros. This was not a Helping Hands programme but Rita’s love of cats prompted her to assist another charity by catching and transporting feral cats to Sorbas for neutering, with the aim of reducing the huge cat population in the town. Rita was taking part in such a task following a request to attend a property with the intention of securing a cat for the programme. As Rita tried to secure the cat she fell into an obscure and uncovered pool pump housing set below ground. Rita sustained horrific injuries. After a lengthy period Rita was found and paramedics eventually able to remove and airlift her to hospital. Subsequently Rita was transferred to a hospital in Belgium, her homeland, and has remained there since. Despite ongoing therapy, it is now believed that Rita will never regain use of her limbs due to the extensive nerve damage she has. Plans are underway for Rita to return to Spain when she will have to go into the Nursing Care

By the time you readers read this we should be a little cooler and “Madrid” will have gone home !!! Writing this on 14th August it has been an overcast day with some light rain here in Cartagena – welcome !!! The garden has lapped it up and Mum (92) has had the A/C off today !!! She asks me “does it cost a lot to run ?” and I answer “not so much as your heating was in UK for at least 5 months a year !” I often gets asked “how do you work in August up on roofs and “oven” terraces?” and I always say that when I am on a roof installing a dish and sweating profusely (men do sweat !) I think this or 3 months of cold in UK with 5 layers and frozen hands …. Easy to answer…………. TVNEWS …………… For some totally unknown reason signals on the FREESAT service seem to have got a little stronger since the last newsletter and I get reports of people on the smaller end dishes getting acceptable viewing – far from perfect but better than it was. The real answer to good UK TV viewing is a 1.80 quality dish but 1.45’s are giving acceptable viewing ……… will it last ???? Lots of rumour about yet another new satellite – “G” – decreasing our signals yet again ………. I do not hold with that view but I can not be sure as the powers that control the system are very secretive in their proposed actions ---- but having spent some 100 million getting us to where we are (with a new 15 year life satellite) will they spend money changing yet again ? The new sports channel – SKYSPORT 5 – was launched on 12th August and will carry international football. Now those of you with SKY contracts in SKY boxes will not get this channel until October / November even though it is included in your pack. SKY are trying to make you “press the red button” to activate the channel when as well as doing that they will try to sell you SKY broadband with a very good offer. We can not “red button” out here (unless you have a UK ipaddress) – but if you phone SKY they will add SPORTS 5 on to your pack without the internet hard sell ……….. but as you are aware you must be careful about phoning them from Spain as if they think you are here they are legally obliged to cut your service ……….. a disguised number UK mobile is usually fine or the safest is to use my UK SKY agent but there is a pounds25.00/euro30.00 charge ……….. Clients with our IPTV boxes will get sports 5 automatically ……… clients with Ferguson or SKYBOX will need us to install a new channel list but you should have had a separate email about that. Internet TV is a reality now but you MUST have good consistent internet supply from a server who will support internet TV ……. Such servers do exist in Spain and thus UK TV with NO dish is a reality ……… our system has the largest channels selection with ALL sports and movies and a great movie pack of some of the latest movies and boxed sets ………….. Absolutely superb TV for a minimal subscription of less than 70cents a day – half a cup of coffee ! ……….. Ask us for details before you upgrade your dish to some monster …………. Robots could take half of jobs in Spain
More than half of the jobs currently being done in Spain could be taken over by robots in the next 20 years, according to a think-tank. The study from Brussels think-tank Bruegel found 55.3 percent of jobs in Spain at the moment could be computerized and left to robots in the next two decades. European countries most at risk from this computerization were Romania (62 percent) and Portugal (59 percent). The exact effect this could have on unemployment rates is unclear because as technology takes over, new jobs are created, meaning those who lose their work to robots will not necessarily become unemployed. “Technology is likely to dramatically reshape labour markets in the long run and to cause reallocations in the types of skills that the workers of tomorrow will need,” Jeremy Bowles of Bruegel wrote about his study last week. “To mitigate the risks of this reallocation it is important for our educational system to adapt.” A study published in September last year caused a stir when it listed the
jobs in the USA most at risk to robots. The study calculated how at risk jobs were of computerization by identifying three things which hinder robots potentially taking over the job – creative intelligence, social intelligence and perception and manipulation tasks. Telemarketers (at a 99 percent risk), clerks, referees and credit analysts were among the jobs most likely to be taken over by robots, while those least at risk included recreational therapists, social workers and doctors. “I find it hard to believe robots can do telemarketing jobs,” Konstantin Appelt, CEO of Call Centre Barcelona, told The Local. “It’s been tried before already and it failed. People don’t want to talk to machines, they just hang up straight away.” The Bruegel think-tank took this data from the 2013 study which was based on USA employment figures and applied it to Europe to find out how at risk European countries were. Spanish public debt tops €1 trillion-mark
Spain’s public debt has topped €1 trillion ($1.3 trillion) for the first time, the central bank announced, despite years of government-imposed austerity. The nation’s accumulated public debt mushroomed to €1.007 trillion at the end of June from €996 billion a month earlier, the Bank of Spain said in a report. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s government has struggled to contain annual deficits by raising taxes, freezing public salaries and curbing spending on services such as education and health care despite angry street protests. Though the annual deficits are on the decline, they continue to push up the sovereign debt of the eurozone’s fourth-largest economy. The public debt figure includes the cost of a €41 billion banking rescue in 2012 financed by Spain’s eurozone partners. The trillion-euro public debt figure is equal to 98.5 percent of Spain’s 2013 gross domestic product, a calculation
by the news agency AFP showed. The Bank of Spain has yet to release final GDP figures for the second quarter of 2014. Spain enjoyed a relatively low debt ratio, equal to 36.3 per cent of GDP, in 2007. But the public debt soared after the implosion of a decade-long property bubble, which tipped the economy into a double-dip recession. Spain’s economy emerged from the latest two-year downturn in mid2013 and grew in the second quarter of 2014 at a faster-than-expected quarterly rate of 0.6 per cent. The unemployment rate dipped below 25.0 per cent in the April-June period but still remains painfully high at 24.47 per cent. An episode of shingles typically lasts around two to four weeks, although around one in five people go on to develop nerve pain called postherpetic neuralgia in the affected area of skin. When to seek medical advice Shingles is not usually serious, but you should see your Doctor as soon as possible if you recognise the symptoms. Early treatment may help reduce the severity of your symptoms and the risk of developing complications. You should also see your Doctor if you are pregnant or have a weakened immune system (the body’s natural defence system) and you think you have been exposed to someone with chickenpox or shingles and haven’t had chickenpox before. Your Doctor will usually be able to diagnose shingles based on your symptoms and the appearance of the rash.. What causes shingles? Most people have chickenpox in childhood, but after the illness has gone, the virus remains dormant (inactive) in the nervous system. The immune system keeps the virus in check, but later in life it can be reactivated and cause shingles. It is not known exactly why the shingles virus is reactivated at a later stage in life, but most cases are thought to be caused by having lowered immunity (protection against infections and diseases). This may be the result of: • being older • being stressed •t aking medication that weakens your immune system • a condition that affects your immune system, such as HIV or AIDS It is not possible to catch shingles from someone with the condition or from someone with chickenpox, but you can catch chickenpox from someone with shingles if you have not had it before. It is possible to have shingles more than once, but it’s very rare to get it more than twice. Who is affected? Shingles can occur at any age, but is most common in people who are over the age of 70. It is much less common in children. It’s estimated that around one in every four people will have at least one episode of shingles during their life. How shingles is treated There is no cure for shingles, but treatment is available to relieve the symptoms until the condition resolves. Most cases of shingles last around two to four weeks. Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. Today we are going to take a walk through the process of removing those nasty little browser hijackers. Firstly. What is a browser hijacker? Secondly. How did they get there? Lastly. How do we remove them? The first 2 are reasonably simple and shouldn’t take long but the 3rd is a “how to” and will take a little longer. First – What is a browser hijacker? This is where your web browser’s settings are modified. The term “hijacking” is used as the changes are performed without your permission. A browser hijacker may replace the existing home page, error page, or search page with its own. Generally these changes are used to force hits to a particular website, increasing its advertising revenue. Second – How did they get there? This is usually done by a program that you are ‘encouraged’ to download along side something that you actually want! The homepages that are set by hijackers are often search pages, and many of these programs are ‘Spyware’ programs that track personal data. Most installers will give users the opportunity to accept or decline an offer to install a hijacker; however, the request to decline the offer is often ignored or presented in a very confusing manner. This is done for the sole reason of tricking you into installing excessive ‘Bloatware’ and ‘Malware’. Lastly – How to get rid of them! Some browser hijacking can be easily reversed, while other instances may be difficult to reverse. The simple ones (and I hope that this is the kind you get IF you have to get any!) simply alters the browser’s setting in the ‘Home Page’ and ‘Search Page’ Settings and maybe the properties section of the ‘Shortcut Link’. These are so easy to resolve that the process is this: Open your browser (Firefox, IE, Chrome, etc.); Go to the settings (options) in the menu and find the ‘Home Page’ section, simply change it back to your usual ‘Home Page’. Repeat this process with your ‘search page’ as well. Finally left click over the browser icon
on your desktop and select ‘Properties’ from the ‘drop-down’ menu. Look at the name and if you see any of the unwanted web sites in the name – just highlight them and hit the ‘Delete’ key. This will remove the simple type of hijacker from your computer. The next type are much more insidious as the changes are placed by a program, that you have been socially engineered to download, and is still active on your machine. You will know if this is the case because when you have done the simple ‘clean up’ and restarted your computer, the corrections will have been ‘over written’ back to the hijackers preferences as that is exactly what they are there for to prevent such modification. So let’s start the process: First get ‘MalwareBytes’; install it and run it and wait; and wait; and did I mention, wait? “All good things come to those that wait”, well in this case it is true! This program will remove nearly, if not all, those pesky little programs. A word of warning! When you have finished your first run at removing you will be advised to ‘Restart the computer’. Follow this advise and run it again and repeat until you get a result of ‘0 found’, because some of these little buggers take several attempts! You might find that there are those that will not be removed! The next level of attack ir to restart your computer in ‘Safe Mode’ and re-run the MalwareBytes program – your 98% hit rate will become 99.6% - 100%. If you don’t get 100% then some of these files use techniques that prevent them from being removed. At this point you might want to consider the help of someone that know (nearly) all the tricks :-) This week I spent 6 hours hunting down a particularly nasty little hijacking program before beating it! jj cale
Summer 1981, I was 14 going on 15 and just met my first ‘proper’ girlfriend Chloe. We lived 30 Kms apart which was nothing to my raging hormones so one extremely hot Sunday lunchtime I decided to cycle to her house. Water was for sissies in those days and I arrived some hours later verging on sunstroke. Hot, sweaty and partly delirious wasn’t the best way to be introduced to her mum and grandmother but I think my determination won them over. Chloe’s mum Jo was a classic hippie; a school teacher with flowing hair, flowing skirts and very tall. She simultaneously terrified and impressed me. At the end of the afternoon my bike was put in the back of her car and I was kindly dropped at Witley Station to catch the train back to Guildford. Thereafter Chloe and I would spend alternate weekends at each other’s houses. Whenever in Chiddingfold, a bucolic scene greeted me as the village is deep in the Surrey countryside. Their house was right on the cricket green and the thwack of willow on ball was heard on summer afternoons.

“What do you think you’re doing Dave?” Do you remember that, from 2001 A Space Odyssey when the computer wouldn’t let Dave back on the spaceship because he was trying to disconnect it? Scary and even more so now because it could soon be coming true. I’m already convinced that my computer has a mind of its own. Maybe you’ve experienced this too. No matter how many times I set the language to English UK, it decides to go back to English USA. I’ve changed it so many times that I’m almost at the point of either welding it into place or moving to New York, just so it stops with the red lines for spelling mistakes. Well, spelling is one thing, but actually taking over is another. There is speculation that, by 2050, the World Cup will be refereed by robots, either on the pitch or watching from the sidelines. Imagine, when the players surround the ref to complain, jolly nicely of course, about a decision that they feel a little irked at, instead of a red card, the ref could produce a vaporiser. In an instant it gets rid of a multitude of very rich chaps who, most of the time, are a downright embarrassment. Actually, this shift towards advanced technology taking over from humans has already happened. In Japan they have had an android reading the news. This thing looks almost real, but a bit plasticy, just like some of the celebrities do after they’ve had those plastic surgery abominations on their various bits and bobs. Do you think though, that there may be some advantages to having androids instead of people. After all, don’t we mess up big time occasionally? For example, in Los Angeles just last week a new parking sign informed motorists that they could only park for a limited time. Actually it was a very limited time because, instead of the sign saying 1 hour, it said 1 minute! Just enough time to get out of the car, put the money in the meter, then drive away! Yes, there are definitely so many ways that an android could improve things. But, then we wouldn’t have celebrities saying things like...”where’s the Cannes Film Festival being held this year?” Answers please on a postcard to Ms. Christina Aguilera! Evenings often meant a pub meal down at the Swan Inn with the locals taking the mickey of the two teenage lovebirds. In my formative years, I already had a love for music with Genesis, Police and Pink Floyd topping my list. Sunday at 5pm meant the Top 40 on Radio One. Each week like other teenagers across Britain, I carefully placed my trusty tape recorder next to the radio to record the most up to date tunes to replay them during the week. Chloe had a Dansette record player, it was like having a juke box as 45 rpm singles could be stacked on the spindle to drop down and play one by one. A whole 15 minutes could pass without having to get up and load it up again but the records got scratched to buggery. Jo being a hippy had great music taste and said that she’d recently been to a JJ Cale concert. The blank look on my face had her delving into her record collection and she played me his newly released album, the 1981 ‘Shades’. With the album cover beautifully reminiscent of a packet of Gauloises cigarettes this guy was cool. Then she played his 1976
album ‘Troubadour.’ JJ Cale had me hooked, languorous, laid back and yet so happy and alive. Soon I was adding JJ Cale to my own record collection. JJ Cale was born in Oklahoma in 1938 and grew up in Tulsa. In 1960 he moved to Los Angeles with some musician friends, all hoping to break into the music business. He worked as a sound engineer and by 1966 he’d funded the recording of six singles performing as Johnny Cale but none were initially successful. At the time there was another John Cale on the scene from Velvet Underground so he changed his name to JJ. Success eluded him at first and he returned to Tulsa. Then in 1970 he heard a cover of his 1966 single After Midnight being performed on the radio by Eric Clapton. Clapton had been recording his first solo album in the States with co-writers and producers Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett. They’d played JJ Cales single to him and Clapton recorded it. At the time JJ Cale was in his early 30s and skint. The royalties transformed his life and meant
he could carry on recording music and keep out of the limelight. Clapton and JJ Cale became friends and in1980 Clapton recorded the track ‘Cocaine’ which is another JJ Cale composition. JJ Cale sadly died a year ago; Clapton has just released a wonderful tribute album featuring Mark Knopfler, Tom Petty and Willie Nelson amongst others – The Breeze!

SELLOUT SUCCESS FOR THE SO MUCH MORE THAN JUST ROYAL BRITISH LEGION REMEMBERING
As the evening progressed I was particularly looking forward to Rebecca’s second set featuring songs from ‘The War Years’ and this is where her talents really shone through as she transported us all back with her wonderful husky tones. In Vera Lynn’s 97th year Rebecca paid tribute to ‘The Forces Sweetheart’ by singing many of the songs most associated with her, “We’ll Meet Again”, “The White Cliffs of Dover”, “A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square” and “There’ll Always Be an England” and many, many more. And with song sheets provided, had there been a roof to the open air venue, she surely would have brought it down. This young lady is almost certainly on the verge of stardom so to see her entertaining locally as she continues to build on her experience really is a great joy for those of us who are able to see her perform. It seems incredible that one so young can be so completely immersed in the emotion of her songs. . she has the honesty, vulnerability and total commitment every time she sings - the hallmarks of a true artist. And whilst the evening was all about having a jolly good time the monies that were raised through the raffle, in excess of 750 euro, really will be put to good use as they are added to the funds raised by the Orihuela Costa Branch toward their 2014 Poppy Appeal, all of which will be use to support ex servicemen and their families here in Spain. A really wonderful night attended by very nearly 200 people, that was the Royal British Legion BBQ, held by the Orihuela Costa Branch last Thursday evening at the Olympia Restaurant in Mil Palmeras. Not only were the diners right royally feasted by our host Elena, but they also enjoyed an evening of first class entertainment provided by the 17 year old singing sensation Rebecca Holt, ably supported by the ever popular local showgroup TAABS (Torrevieja Association Of Amateur Balladeer Singers), all of whom gave their excellent services absolutely free of charge. But in providing a solo performance of his own it was Les Goodacre who got the evening underway. Les is a recent addition to the TAABS lineup, but with a penchant for Elvis, was largely playing to an audience of that sort of era. It was felt that his talents were far too good to forgo, so his first class interpretations of a number of Elvis classics helped to set the mood for the remainder of the musical evening. Rebecca Holt was next up and with her relaxed style and presentation, and her simply wonderful voice, her opening set was bubbly and a great deal of fun. A mark of this young lady’s performance was that she kept the audience spellbound, even whilst the bbq was being served....not an easy task when playing to the 200 ravenous diners. TAABS took over the stage under their new Musical Director Shirley Godfrey and they too wowed the bumper crowd with a sparkling performance of popular songs from the shows. As the audience began to sing along we heard half a dozen solo performances from the octet who just seem to get better with age. It was apparent that the group have been working quite hard with their harmonies as there was hardly a wavering note all night. Certainly one of the best harmonic performances that I have heard on the Costa Blanca for many a good year, and so apparent that they work extremely hard at everything they do. TAABS have now been performing on our shores for over 15 years and with 24 shows last year alone I can now see why they are in such great demand. And what a bonus; their performances are all provided absolutely free of charge, the result being that they have raised many thousands of euro’s for Costa Blanca
Remembering the Battle of Britain remains one of the more significant Commemorative events that occur each year. This vital turning point in WW11, will be commemorated at a special Service of Thanksgiving at the La Siesta Community Church on Monday 15th September, commencing at 11am. All are welcome to attend. However, this very special service is just one of the several events organised by the Costa Blanca Branch of the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA) during September. As a charitable organisation, RAFA, although striving throughout the year to raise funds, uses Battle of Britain Week as its major fund raising time by bringing the RAFA Charity’s aims and objectives to the attention of the public. Sony PlayStation Network and other game services attacked
Sony’s PlayStation Network was forced offline for much of Sunday by a cyber-attack in what appears to be a campaign against several online gaming services. Microsoft’s XBox Live, Blizzard’s Battle.net, and Grinding Gear Games are among others to have reported being disrupted over the weekend.

The attacks coincided with a bomb scare involving a flight carrying a Sony executive. An American Airlines jet was diverted after a threat was made online. A warning that the flight - from DallasFort Worth to San Diego - was carrying explosives was subsequently repeated by a Twitter account that had been used to claim responsibility for the online attacks. John Smedley, president of Sony Online Entertainment, had been tweeting about his firm’s efforts to combat a “large scale DDoS” before posting a message saying he was about to board the plane. DDoS stands for distributed denial of service attack - a technique in which many computers are used to flood an online service with requests in an attempt to overload its systems. After the threatened plane landed in Phoenix, Arizona, Mr Smedley tweeted: “Yes, my plane was diverted. Not going to discuss more than that. Justice will find these guys.” A spokeswoman for Sony said that the FBI was now investigating the diversion. However, the Bureau has yet to issue a statement of its own. Jihadist links A Twitter account that has claimed responsibility for attacking Sony and the other video games firms has linked the attacks to the jihadist group Islamic State, posting: “Kuffar [non-muslims] don’t get to play videogames until bombing of the ISIL stops.” It also makes several references to Isis - the former name used by the Islamic militants. But it is unclear whether this is a diversionary tactic, since an earlier post by the same account states: “Sony, yet another large company, but they aren’t spending the waves of cash they obtain on their customers’ PSN service. End the greed.” To complicate matters another hacker, who is associated with the Anonymous hacking collective, has claimed responsibility for the DDoS on the PlayStation Network, saying they mounted it to highlight vulnerabilities in
Sony’s system.
This hacker has criticised the other claims of responsibility and posted screenshots that purport to support their case. Xbox disruption Sony’s PlayStation Network was notably taken offline for more than three weeks in 2011 after a hack attack that compromised its members’ personal details and exposed their encrypted debit and credit card accounts. However, the firm’s social media manager has sought to reassure subscribers about the latest attack. “We have seen no evidence of any intrusion to the network and no evidence of any unauthorized access to users’ personal information,” Sid Shuman blogged. Xbox Live support The Xbox Live support site continues to report problems “In light of today’s issue, the networks will not undergo the regularly scheduled maintenance, which was planned for Monday, August 25. “We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused by this issue.” Microsoft declined to “comment on the root cause” of disruption its rival Xbox Live online gaming service has faced. However, a message on is support site stated that Xbox One owners were experiencing “server unavailability issues” when trying to join other players in online games. The webpage also mentions problems faced by owners of the Xbox 360 trying to connect to Diablo III’s party chat feature. This appears to be a consequence of an attack on Activision Blizzard’s gaming service Battle.net, which also supports World of Warcraft and Starcraft titles. “Battle.net game services have recently been subject to DDoS attacks. We worked diligently along with our ISPs [internet service providers] to improve the situation and currently are seeing more stability,” said a message posted to the facility’s site. Meanwhile, Grinding Gear Games posted a message on the Twitter account of its game Path of Exile on Sunday, saying: “We’re having some server issues due to a DDoS attack. Should have it sorted out soon. Sorry for the inconvenience!” The incidents follow reports of earlier DDoS attacks on other multiplayer titles on Friday, including Eve Online, League of Legends, RuneScape and Guild Wars 2. read more on: www.bbc.com

Spain’s building sector fastest growing in EU
Spain’s building sector grew seven percent in the second quarter of 2014 making it the top performer in the European Union, welcome news for the sector that was left battered and bruised by Spain’s economic crisis. By clocking up the seven-percent rise, Spain outstripped a poor-performing EU which saw construction activity slide by 0.6 percent. Spain also recorded a 6.8-percent year-on-year rise in construction, the fourth strongest figure in the 28-member bloc according to the preliminary figures from the EU’s statistics agency Eurostat. In the EU as a whole, there was a 2.3-percent slide from June 2013 to June 2014.

“The mind can play tricks on you. Sometimes people see things just because they want to see them.” Trailers have always been popular in promoting new films about to be released. The new trend in novels is to release a prequel or a parallel story to lead into the main novel. Writers seem to favour the ebook to promote their latest novel. Theo is a prequel to Light Shining in the Forest, a macabre tale of murder, child abduction and the supernatural. John Elliott is the main character, a disillusioned priest, questioning his beliefs and deciding that he was a failure. He is the vicar of St. Joseph’s church although he could quite so easily have been an accountant or a solicitor. His world was turned upside down when his father, a Minister of the Church of Scotland died suddenly at the age of 50. John was devastated and believed that by studying theology at Durham University would be the best path to follow. Initially, he was full of optimism hoping to encourage his parish to attend the church instead of filling just the first three rows of the church with its ageing members and the rest of the church empty. I’m sure it came as a huge shock to many of us who live in the Almanzora Valley when we heard of the sudden death of Belén, the English speaking Spanish dentist with practices in Cantoria and Arboleas. By far the best dentist I’ve ever known, Belén always had a smile and clearly cared deeply for both her patients and her profession and will be very greatly missed by all who knew her. But what a tragedy that so young a woman who contributed so much to society, with so much potential, should so suddenly and inexplicably be taken. How much we feel for her family and close friends. But for most of us, I’d guess, this news also came as a salutary reminder of our own mortality, for many of us tend to live our lives in self-denial; pretending that death doesn’t happen. We forget that this is one thing that happens to us all. And as a result we make little or no preparation. Many of us planned our careers, investing time in education. We spent much time in planning our retirement, ensuring we invested wisely. The wise amongst us planned our move to Spain, making numerous enquiries and reading all information available about our new home. Many take out plans for their own funeral and/or investigate ways to minimise liability for inheritance tax. But how much time do we ever invest into preparing ourselves for the next World? OK I know it’s said that nobody’s ever come back! But what about Jesus? Didn’t he? And there’s a wealth of information about life after death in the Bible; so how much time have we ever given to reading that? It is going to happen to us one day – nothing’s surer. And it’s no good presuming we’ve plenty of time –we none of us know how long we have; so just how well are we prepared? And what do we plan to do about it? For eternity’s a long while, and must surely therefore be worth some serious preparation. Paella with chicken, chorizo, mussels and prawns
Ingredients
6 boneless higherwelfare chicken breasts or thighs, skin on, each quartered sea salt freshly ground black pepper plain flour, for dusting olive oil 100 g iberico chorizo, sliced 6 slices higher-welfare pancetta or streaky bacon 1 onion, finely chopped 4 cloves garlic, finely chopped 2 litres organic chicken stock, hot 2 large pinches saffron 1 heaped teaspoon smoked paprika 500 g paella rice 1 small bunch flat-leaf parsley, leaves picked and chopped, stalks chopped 2 handfuls fresh or frozen peas 10 king prawns, from sustainable sources, ask your fishmonger 500 g mussels, from sustainable sources, ask your fishmonger, scrubbed, optional 2 small squid, from sustainable sources, ask your fishmonger, halved and scored, optional
Method
Preheat the oven to 190ºC/375ºF/gas 5. Season the chicken pieces and dust with flour. Heat a little olive oil in a large deep pan and fry the chicken until golden brown on both sides. Place the pieces on a baking tray and into the oven for 30 minutes. Put the pan back on the heat. Add the sliced chorizo and pancetta or bacon and fry until browned and crispy. Then add the onion and garlic and cook until soft. Meanwhile infuse half the hot chicken stock with the saffron. Add the smoked paprika, rice and infused stock and leave to cook on a medium heat, stirring from time to time. After 20 minutes the rice should be nearly cooked. At this point, pour in the rest of the stock along with the peas, prawns, and the mussels and squid if you are using them. Place a lid on the pan and cook for 10 minutes more. Once you have peeled, chopped, prepared and assembled everything, heat the oil in the pan over a fairly high heat. Now season the chicken joints, adding 4 of them to the hot oil to sauté on all sides until golden brown, then remove them to a plate and do the same with the other 4 joints. Next add the onion, pepper and chorizo and fry these over a medium heat for 6-8 minutes, or until they’re nicely tinged brown at the edges. Now add the garlic, paprika, cayenne and saffron and cook for another minute, then return the chicken to the pan, followed by the tomatoes, plenty of seasoning and 2 pints (1.2 litres) boiling water. simmer, turn the heat down and cook, uncovered, for 10 minutes. After that, remove the chicken pieces and set them aside, then pour the rice into the centre of the pan. Bring everything back up to the boil, give a final stir and simmer, still uncovered, for about 10 minutes. During that time, shake the pan occasionally and move it around on the hob a little if the hob plate is not as big as the base of the pan. Next, return the chicken, along with the prawns and peas, to the pan and continue to simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the rice is cooked, adding a little more hot liquid if you think it’s necessary. Now shake the pan again, making sure the rice is completely immersed. Turn the prawns over halfway through the cooking time – they will turn pink when cooked. The rice at the edges of the pan will take longest to cook, so to test that the paella is ready, take a little of the rice from the edges and check it’s cooked through, then remove the pan from the heat and cover with a clean tea cloth for 5 minutes to absorb some of the steam. Warm Chicken Salad with Potato Salad Pork Brochette with Chips Peas & Salad Atlantic Cod Fishcake with Sweet Chili Dip, Chips, Peas Saver or Salad
Ingredients
2 cloves of garlic 1 onion 1 carrot 15 g fresh flat-leaf parsley 70 g chorizo 2 skinless, boneless higher-welfare chicken thighs olive oil 1 teaspoon sweet smoked paprika 1 red pepper 1 tablespoon tomato pure ́e 1 cube chicken stock 300 g paella rice 100 g frozen peas 200 g frozen peeled cooked prawns 1 lemon
Method
Peel and finely slice the garlic, peel and roughly chop the onion and carrot. Finely chop the parsley stalks, then roughly chop the chorizo and chicken thighs. Put a lug of oil into a
large lidded shallow casserole or paella pan on a medium heat, add the garlic, onion, carrot, parsley stalks, chorizo, chicken and paprika, and fry for around 5 minutes, stirring regularly. Deseed and chop the pepper, then add to the pan for a further 5 minutes. Stir through the tomato pure ́e and crumble in the stock cube, then add the rice and stir for a couple of minutes so it starts to suck up all that lovely flavour. Pour in 750ml of boiling water and add a pinch of salt and pepper. Pop the lid on and bring to the boil, then reduce to a simmer for 15 minutes, stirring regularly from the outside in and from the inside out, and adding a splash of water if needed. Stir in the peas and prawns, replace the lid, and cook for a further 5 minutes, or until hot through. Season to perfection, then chop the parsley leaves, scatter them over the paella, and serve with lemon wedges on the side for squeezing over. Source: www.jamieoliver.com

Malnourished mare rescued from appalling case of animal neglect
In one of the most appalling cases of animal neglect yet, the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre has saved a malnourished mare with a disease that left her so itchy she literally broke off her own tailbone. Local police called centre founders Sue and Rod Weeding to Almoradi on Sunday, after a Spanish woman found the horse tied to an orange tree and abandoned. “We responded immediately and were horrified at what we found,” Sue said. “This 15-year-old malnourished mare has melanomas that had become infected through neglect, which triggered an allergic reaction causing intense irritation on any bite, cut or wound.” The horse, which was clearly left
untreated, had begun to rub and scratch herself everywhere. “The intensity was so great around her tail area that she has actually broken off her tail bone, we think about a month ago,” Sue said. Though the wounds look horrendous, Sue said the mare was not in any pain as the nerve endings around her tailbone had died off and were starting to heal over. “The good news is she is now on steroids, which will stop the irritation, and antibiotics to treat the infection,” Sue said. “Obviously her tail will never grow back but with good management and lots of care, all her wounds should heal to an acceptable standard. Every single cent donated to EHCRC or spent in their eight charity shops across the Alicante province goes towards the feeding and care of the more than 80 horses, ponies and donkeys that live at the centre. The EHCRC charity shops are located in La Zenia, Los Montesinos, La Siesta, Ciudad Quesada, Guardamar, La Marina, Pilar de Horadada and Gran Alacant. Donations of furniture, clothes and bric-a-brac to stock the shops are gratefully welcomed. Large donated items such as furniture can be collected from your house and each shop also offers a delivery service for large items purchased from the charity shops. EHCRC is also looking for volunteers to staff its shops for a few hours or days each week Please contact

ground in a soggy heap of bent aluminium, towels and twine. This was not the first time it had fallen in combat, but this time it was the last – it was beyond repair. Nothing daunted we betook ourselves to the huge Chinese shop, where we reasoned there would be a plethora of whirligig washing lines for sale. There were three – but the whirligig top was echoed by whirligig feet, and the whole lot was packaged in plastic with an illustration of a manically smiling young lady holding up a very small teatowel. I looked at them glumly. There is no way that these elegant art forms in aluminium would stand up in Limaria, the birthplace of Spanish hurricanes! Free-standing whirlygigs would be less use than the standard chocolate fireguard - I needed something that could be anchored to the bedrock as securely as a lighthouse. We then tried the large

Chinese shop, which had no whirligig washing lines at all, so we paraphrased ‘should have gone to Specsavers’ into ‘should have gone to Lepanto’, a Ferreteria small enough to fit several times over in either of the Chinese shops. And hey presto! There was the whirligig washing line of desire propped against the doorframe! As I picked it up I thought I heard an evil Imp-like chuckle, so I checked it over – it was missing the crucial piece - the bit that gets hammered into the ground! I relayed this information to the girl at the till, who hollered for José in tones that would have secured her employment anywhere as Town Crier, and which caused temporary deafness in those queueing nearby. José returned with the vital piece. We paid, returned home, and lost no time erecting Whirlygig #2 –That persistently pesky Imp will find it has met its match – it will not defeat us!
Rapier-like Wit
Have you ever wanted to respond to a remark that someone has made, but just cannot think of anything witty or meaningful to say? Then a little later when it is far too late, some snappy line comes into your head that you wish you had thought of earlier. Those that can come back immediately with these gems have my admiration, as do comedians who have the ability to reel off original one-liners. All this came to mind last week when Tim Vine won the award for the funniest joke for the second year running at the Edinburgh Fringe with: “I decided to sell my Hoover . . . well it was just collecting dust.” Brilliant. There are so many masterpieces like this out there; many of them from people no longer with us, but their genius lives on in the wonderful humour. Groucho Marks has a large number attributed to him, some famous and some not so well known. Things like: “I intend living forever or die trying.” And: “If you’ve heard this story before, don’t stop me because I’d like to hear it again.” Bob Monkhouse was without doubt one of the wittiest comedians I have ever seen live and I was in stitches when he told the audience: “I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my father. Not screaming and terrified like his passengers.” He was terminally ill with prostate cancer at the time. And he

gave us pause for thought when he pondered: “What do gardeners do when they retire?” The delivery of course is all important and the dead pan trade mark of Steven Wright is inseparable from his eccentric brand of humour. “I’ve named my dog ‘Stay’ . . . he went insane . . . Come here, stay.” And “If the pen is mightier than the sword – in a duel I’ll let you have the pen”, are just two that always appeal to my own sense of fun. Others are designed to make us think as well as chuckle. “If all the nations in the world are in debt, where did all the money go?” Steve Connelly is another comedian in the same mould with things like: “Trees that grow in smoggy cities are needed to make carbon paper” and “Which of the Himalayas is the shortest?” Also Woody Allen . . . “I believe there is something out there watching us. Unfortunately it’s the government.” And George Carlin when he philosophised: “There’s no present. There’s only the immediate future and the recent past.” Mother’s-in-law have always been prime targets for comedians with Les Dawson being perhaps the best known exponent – at least if you are British. Spouses also receive their fair share of ridicule from the funny men and some of my favourites come from Rodney Dangerfield. “My wife and I were happy for twenty years – then we met.” And: “My wife met me at the door the other night wearing a sexy negligee. Unfortunately she was just coming home”, are just two examples. Victor Borge – my Dad’s favourite – was not only a very funny man, but also a
brilliant concert pianist and conductor. The accent as well as the straight face made him that much funnier and I can hear my Dad’s infectious laugh now as Victor, seated at the piano announced to the audience: “I only know two pieces – 0ne is ‘Clair de Lune’ . . . and the other one isn’t.” My personal favourite was the late Spike Milligan – one of those hilarious but tragic figures who seem to make up much of the star filled firmament of great comics. He was never predictable – you always knew something was coming but never quite sure what. “I have the body of an eighteen year old” he once said. . . . “I keep it in the fridge.” And as a reminder of his humour, there for all to see on his head stone the words: “I told you I was ill.” Not all humourists are stand up comedians. Noel Coward at the height of his fame was besieged by reporters at the airport wanting to know why he had been visiting Switzerland. Without hesitation and in his inimitable cut glass voice, he informed them: “I simply adore chocolate.” On one occasion at a party, a group of his friends were discussing the differences between men and women. “What do you think Noel?” one asked him, to which he replied, “I simply can’t conceive.” Wonderful stuff, as was his testament to living: “I’ll go through life either first class or third, but never in second.” And from perhaps the greatest man of the 20th century, Winston Spencer Churchill – that rare combination of politician, humourist and war leader: “History will be kind to me, for I intend to write it.”

Persistent Peskiness
The day so far had been less than tranquil. I had fallen over for no reason, the component parts of the pool cleaning apparatus had wilfully disengaged themselves mid-clean, and the instruction manual for Pete’s camera had disappeared into the ether and not left a forwarding address. To the annoyance of the Mischief Imp that caused them, we had surmounted all these irritations. However, any Mischief Imp worth its salt is not to be beaten quite so easily, so it turned its attentions to the washing line. The washing line was a battered old campaigner, bearing the scars of years of conflict with the elements, and the Imp had no difficulty bringing it to the

Alqueria was fast becoming known as a bikers’ paradise. The lack of laws and only José Cabrasilbido, the local policeman to maintain peace meant freedom for these leather jacketed latter day rebels. Alqueria even boasted its very own motorcycle gang, ‘Los Terribles’. Among its members were ‘Petrol-Vapour Pedro’ high on gasoline fumes even before he leaves the house. ‘Long-Stroke Jake’ so named because, well perhaps it´s better not knowing. Even Loco Paco joined but was drummed out for fitting stabilisers to his 50cc Derbi moped. Motoring events are rare in Alqueria, although the ‘Google Street View’ camera car did come into the pueblo. It arrived one Sunday morning and was never seen again. Coincidently the Village now has a security camera installed in the Plaza and Arián Pérez has a new car with a strange hole in the roof. Los Terribles raced back and forth on their machines scattering the old and infirm. They made the Bar La Casa Devante their headquarters turning the quaint Spanish taberna into an oily, greasy dive. When Manuela heard there was a huge Yamaha outside the Bar she hurried to the hostelry. She was however under the illusion that a Yamaha was an organ. Rival gangs thundered into the Pueblo and fought pitched battles with Los Terribles, other gangs and even themselves. Civil strife was being hijacked by outsiders. The Alquerian pastime was being usurped by foreigners and that would never do. The people of the Village were forced to live in peace while they witnessed imported anarchy. Something had to be done. Loco Paco was still smarting from his blackballing by
Los Terribles and vowed revenge. Manuela was disappointed to discover that a huge Yamaha was in fact only a motorcycle and Poyato was losing money as the bikers drank bourbon and not Remitroot based booze. The now defunct Alquerian Space Program had left as its legacy several hundred litres of Remitroot rocket fuel. In the dead of night the disgruntled Alquerians drained the tanks on the motorbikes and refilled them with the potent liquid. The massed ranks of bikers turned their ignition switches as one. It was an awe inspiring sight. Some bikes disintegrated immediately. One Electra Glide spanned the Río Verde before breaking up. The rider left clutching the machine’s handlebars now detached from the smouldering wreck which was once his pride and joy. Petrol-Vapour Pedro, as was his custom partook of the fuel orally. He still wanders the Village, a glazed look, permanent grin and speaking a rare Mandarin dialect only spoken by a handful of survivors from the Great Wampee Disaster of 89. Poyato made a mental note to exploit the linguistic capability of Remitroot overindulgence. Alqueria was now free to engage in much loved domestic civil unrest, restoring the status quo and bringing stability back to the Pueblo.

Mat Ford-Dunn, the Managing Director of ‘Advance Moves International Removals’ pointed to the fact that many property values in Spain have now fallen to a much more realistic level and this has definitely resulted in increased house sales. This has been noticed in all regions of Spain as Advance Moves operate their relocation services throughout the mainland. Advance Moves has its main warehouse in Murcia, Spain, with an additional warehouse in Kent in the UK and has had to purchase 5 new vans and trucks to cope with the increased demand over the past year. The UK housing market is also in a state of recovery and increased house sales have resulted in more people selling up and looking to buy in Spain. There are many factors that
tempt expats to Spain, not least the recent periods of turbulent weather, which many parts of the UK have suffered. On the flip side, for economic reasons many British Expats are now able to sell properties in Spain and Advance Moves are often the first choice when it comes to repatriating them back to the UK. Mat was also keen to point out that the increase in demand for their removal services was also down to the level of service and expertise that Advance moves offer to their clients and the fact that many clients had already seen the brightly liveried vehicles on the roads undertaking their removal services. Advance moves is also a member of the British Association of Removers and one of only a few companies that export wrap furniture to provide extra protection for international removals. ‘Our clients know that they are getting a more competitively priced, premium removal service, when compared to the rest of the market. The Fight Is On For Live Music
Everything has not been rosy in the garden for many bar owners and entertainers during this summer season. The discrepancy between those who are allowed to have live music and who are not continues with some bars too fearful to put on entertainment despite having the correct paperwork, while their neighbours carry on blasting out music until all hours.
Entertainers have still had bookings cancelled due to the fear that many venues have of receiving a visit from the police. The situation is a country wide problem that is bringing some bar owner to their knees and has already caused some popular entertainers to leave the country, with others about to follow suit. There does seem to be certain areas where the business owners feel victimised and are unable to take advantage of the increased numbers of potential customers because of the fear of more police visits who scare the customers away. Less than one month ago a Facebook page was set up to discover the extent of the problem, and found that the Costa Blanca was not the only area in Spain suffering from fines and closures. A few
days ago 2 petitions were set up to ask for a “Summer Live Music Entertainment” licence to be issued for the whole of Spain. The main petition is being directed at The Spanish President Mariano Rajoy Brey and also The European Union President Herman Van Rompuy, with copies going to all municipality Presidents. Keep Entertainment Live in Spain now have a Facebook page with all the links for the petitions, of which there are 2. ‘This is a great time for entrepreneurs in Spain’
He has been involved in 25 web startups in Spain and recently set up Bewa7er, an innovative stock market for cash-starved non-listed companies. Meet Madrid-based Belgian entrepreneur extraordinaire François Derbaix. François Derbaix is no stranger is to taking risks. In 2000, he took a leap of faith by moving to Spain with his Spanish partner. Once here, they launched their first web business, the rural holiday house portal toprural.com. “We had no experience in Spain, in travel, or in rural tourism — or even in the internet, but we managed to attract several seasoned experts to our team. Toprural grew quite fast, mostly thanks to the website’s usability and traveller reviews,” Derbaix tells The Local. “After 2 years of bootstrapping the company, with a lot of work and very little financing, the company grew to be a very profitable business which we sold in 2012.” Since then, Derbaix, who completed Belgium’s ‘Management Engineer’ degree, has been involved in other successful web businesses including the rental site rentalia.com, now part of the accommodation giant idealista.com. Some 25 other businesses have now been added to Derbaix’s résumé, including Soysuper, a supermarket aggregator he launched this year. In June, the Belgian also launched Bewa7er, which he describes as a “lightweight stock market for not listed companies” designed to “offer transparency and liquidity to investors in those non-listed companies”. “We manage to bring this to the small and medium-sized enterprises by selling ‘economic rights’ in place of shares (because shares in Spanish limited companies are not freely transferable because the current shareholders have a pre-emptive right of acquisition),” Derbaix explains. Those investment opportunities are also only open to professional investors because the regulatory burden to offer to non-professional investors would be too high. “A potential seller comes to Bewa7er and offers us the chance to sell his shares,” says Derbaix outlining the system. “Bewa7er then offers the economic rights to potential investors and if there is demand Bewa7er buys the shares, keeps the political rights of the shares and syndicates itself with the lead investor in the company, selling the economic rights to the interested investors,” he says. “Those investors will then be able to freely trade economic rights on the platform.” Bewa7er makes money by charging 3 percent commission to the seller on all transactions, and a 0.6 percent yearly maintenance fee to investors. The exchange’s first deal is about to be closed with 12 percent of Zacatrus, an online board game store in Spain, successfully listed on Bewa7er. More deals are in the pipeline. Rules for listing on the exchange are strict and designed to make sure only serious businesses are included. “Our selection criteria specify that the business must have enough financing at least for the next 12 months, be fast growing, have a lead investor and a shareholder agreement protecting the minority investor, and sales worth at least
10 percent of total valuation over the previous four quarters,” says Derbaix. The entrepreneur says the idea came about because “the current barriers to information and transmission of shares in SMEs are so large that there is actually almost no secondary market in those companies”. “In many startups we have seen shareholders wanting to sell, while others want to buy, but the administrative burden involved in carrying out transactions simply kills them off,” says Derbaix. Asked about potential risks, the Belgian argues that Bewa7er is actually safer than many other platforms. “Investing is a risky business, but the risk is lower in Bewa7er. A case like Gowex — a Spanish tech company which failed dramatically recently — would definitely not have happened in Bewa7er, because one of our admission criteria is that the startup has a professional lead investor among its shareholders.” These professional investors are more prepared than normal individuals to value the risks of their investments and to have proper diversification of their investments, Derbaix explains. “That was not the case in Gowex, where there was no professional investor in the board and almost no control of the entrepreneur and his friends.” In terms of the perceived lack of entrepreneurial spirit in Spain, Derbaix says the problem is not that “there are too few entrepreneurs, but that there is too much State”. “For decades it has been much more attractive to have a career in the public sector than to launch a company: wages in the public sector in Spain were higher, and there were no risk of losing one’s job,” he says. “But this situation has changed. Now more people are considering launching their own company, and creating their own jobs. I really think of Spain as a quite entrepreneurial country.” At the same time, the Belgian believes the system can definitely be improved. “A lot should be done by the State to remove barriers to entrepreneurship. There needs to be a reduction is social security costs, for example, and more flexibility in the labour market. “The State also needs to reduce the legal complexity, But unfortunately I think the Government is exactly going in the opposite direction: adding more and more rules, more prohibitions and more complexity.” At the same time Derbaix says these hurdles are “no excuse when it comes to not succeeding with a business”. “Spain has a lots of advantages: it’s a relatively large market of over 40 million people, and an attractive country to live in (and draw foreign talent to). It also has a good climate: it is part of a huge Spanish-speaking worldwide community, and has very talented people in search of employment. “I think this is a great time for entrepreneurs in Spain: there are a lot of little productive sectors to break into and very well skilled people available to build great teams. I think that there are plenty of opportunities, across many sectors,” Derbaix argues. The Local (news@thelocal.es)

Our game this month was held at Las Ramblas. A first time for us as a Society to visit this course, and everyone, who had not played the course before, felt that the course was very interesting. The Course was in a very good condition and feedback was positive for a return visit. Something for our incoming 2015 Captain to consider? Certainly an enjoyable day was had by all, and the presentations were made back at Franc y Louise Bar in Sucina. A good choice of playing a Texas Scramble format as weather was very hot, with little wind. Overall results were:Wining Team Sofie Ekberg, Bosse, Christine Comber & Colin Comber 59.7pts.

LO CRISPIN GOLF SOCIETY 21 August - Altorreal
Even though it is still hot a fair few of us, 27 in all , went down to Altorreal to play in 6x6x6 stableford. Most people found their way successfully, all except the Captain who went on a sightseeing tour before arriving at the course. Everyone enjoys a team game and this was no exception, with much banter on the tee. We heliotropes set out knowing that there was one to score on the first six holes, two to score on the next six and three on the final six, so no pressure then, until you’re the last to tee off and the other three have done a red arrows bomb burst with their shots. It wasn’t that bad we did find a most of the balls. The course was in extremely good

Only one 2 was recorded, this was George Stewart, The free game draw was won by Tony Rowley. Our away day at Lorca is two weeks away, with Roda following. Even though Roda is over subscribed it is still worth entering onto the reserve list as there are usually people dropping out nearer the date. Good golfing.

New Alfa Romeo 6C will aim to topple the F-Type
Alfa Romeo will take the fight to the Jaguar F-Type with a new Alfa 6C coupe drawing on the looks of the Maserati Alfieri concept
You’ve lusted after the carbon-fibre 4C and daydreamed about the 8C supercar, now prepare to want another Alfa so much that it hurts. The resurgent Italian brand is working on a new front-engined rear-wheel drive coupe, tipped to be called the Alfa Romeo 6C. Alfa’s answer to the Jaguar F-Type and Porsche 911 will be based on the Maserati Alfieri concept - shown at the Geneva Motor Show and already confirmed for production in 2016. According to our source, the 6C will follow in 2017 and our exclusive images show how Alfa’s designers plan to seduce customers. The muscular haunches and tear-drop shaped side glass will be shared with the Alfieri, but the 6C distinguishes itself
with its razor-sharp front end. Combining a traditional shieldshaped grille with slender LED headlights, it will be the most aggressive interpretation of Alfa’s new family face. At the rear, exhausts and tailights set at the very outer edges emphasise the 6C’s width.
Alfa Romeo 6C rear Under the skin the 6C won’t be based on the same platform as the 3 Series-rivalling Giulia saloon (due in late 2015) and the mid-sized and large SUVs (due in 2016 and 2017
respectively). Instead it will use the Alfieri’s underpinnings - a shortened version of the Maserati Ghibli. Alfa 6C to get 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 from the Ghibli It should still deliver a thrilling drive, though, with a highlytuned version of the Ghibli’s 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 under the bonnet (hence the 6C name). We already know this engine will produce between 480bhp to 520bhp in the Giulia Quadrifoglio Verde and we can expect a similar output here, pushing it close to Jaguar F-Type Coupe V8 R and Porsche 911 Turbo territory. Don’t expect the 6C to be built in huge numbers at a knock down price though. As with the 4C and 8C, limited to 3.500 and 500 units respectively for the coupe, and the same for the convertible versions, the 6C is strictly a “special” model with production set to be capped to just a few thousand. The 6C fills a gap in the range left by the Mazda MX-5-based Spider, due to be built in Japan and arrive in showrooms in 2015, it will now be redesigned and rebadged as a Fiat.
