Falling wages threaten Votes for expats: Plan to Spain’s recovery: OECD end UK’s 15-year rule

The fall in Spanish salaries during the country’s crisis, one of the largest in the OECD, could actually hamper the country’s recovery by bringing on deflation and killing off consumer demand, the OECD has warned in a new report. While wage growth across the OECD has been relatively flat in the last two years, Spain’s salaries have continued to fall an average of two percent a year since the country’s economic crisis began, according to the organization’s newly published Employment Outlook 2014. That’s around the same level as in Slovenia and Ireland, the report shows. Only Greece has suffered more, the OECD says, with the salary slide at the other end of the Mediterranean a hefty five percent. The fall in wages is a double blow for struggling economies like Spain, according to the OECD — a 34-country bloc with a strong trade and growth agenda. Not only are there less jobs — almost one in four Spaniards are out of work — but those in work are earning less than they were before the crisis. Before the crisis hit in 2007, eurozone salaries were climbing 2.1 percent a year, the OECD’s Director of Employment, Labour and Social Affairs

Stefano Scarpetta said as a point of comparison. He said employment costs in Spain had veered upwards when the country started using the Euro, but that the crisis had pushed these down. Scarpetta went on to warn that further wage cuts would cause more economic hardship, causing deflation and acting as a dampener on demand. “Policy makers must ensure in particular that any further wage adjustments are not concentrated among low-earners,” the OECD said on Wednesday in a statement. The OECD has also expressed concerns over a “damaging reliance on temporary work” in Spain, noting a falling number of ongoing positions in the country, with these positions only making up 24.5 percent of all jobs in the country. For the OECD more generally, the Employment Outlook 2014 report says that average jobless rates will decrease slightly over the next 18 months in the OECD area, from 7.4 percent in mid2014 to 7.1 percent at the end of 2015. “Policy makers should prioritize efforts on helping the long-term unemployed back to work through more personalized job-search assistance and training programmes, the OECD said on Wednesday. The UK’s Conservative Party has made a bid to woo expat voters by pledging to end the controversial “15-year rule” that prevents millions of Brits abroad from being able to vote. British expats have long campaigned against the rule which states that once they have lived abroad for longer than 15 years they lose their right to vote back in the UK.

this cap and extend it to a full right as a British citizen to vote in British elections for life.” “I am pleased with the news but I’m afraid it doesn’t go far enough,” Alicante-based expat voting rights campaigner Margaret Hales told The Local.

That has left many UK citizens disenfranchised as they are also denied the right to vote in most foreign countries, unless they seek citizenship.

“The Tory party’s decision to include a promise to scrap the 15-year-rule in their election manifesto means Spainbased expats are looking at 2020 before they actually get the chance to vote, as UK elections only take place every five years,” Hales said.

And this week it appears that at least one political party has answered their call.

“Unfortunately for many of this country’s older expats that will simply be too late.”

While the Liberal Democrats have said they will push for changes on expat voting rights, and there are suggestions some Labour MPs also support a possible scrapping of the current regime, David Cameron’s Tory party has now promised to abolish the rule – if they win the next general election, scheduled for May 2015.

Hales is now calling on the UK government to pass a bill scrapping the controversial rule in parliament before the next general elections, planned for 2015.

The Tories say they want to protect the rights of citizens overseas who have “contributed to Britain all their lives”, according to a Tory spokesman quoted in the Daily Telegraph.

The government is hoping to persuade more expats to enroll on the electoral register before the next general election, but a recent push to boost numbers was deemed a failure.

“Millions of British citizens live and work across the globe. Many have worked hard, contributed to Britain all their lives, and have close family living in Britain,” said the spokesman.

However the pledge by the Tory party to end the 15-year rule may well persuade expats that it is worth signing up to the register.

“Like many other countries, the UK continues to protect British citizens living abroad with its military, embassy network, passport and other services. However, Britain currently restricts the rights of these citizens to vote in general elections,” he added. “If the Conservative Party wins the next general election, we will remove

In January the EU Commission said Britain was “punishing” its expats for leaving the country by denying them the right to vote for life.

To download the form and to find out more information about voting you can visit the website www.aboutmyvote. co.uk. It is believed there are around 5.5 million British expats living abroad, with some 800,000 in Spain, but only a tiny portion of them are registered to vote back home. Source: www.thelocal.es

Spanish house prices up for 1st time since crisis

House prices rose by 0.8 percent in the second quarter of 2014 compared to the same period last year, the first positive sign for Spain’s housing market since the economic crisis reared its ugly head at the start of 2008. According to Spain’s National Statistics Institute (INE), new properties saw an increase of 1.9 percent compared to the previous quarter, whilst used property prices rose by 0.2 percent. INE posted the 0.8 percent rise of Spain’s House Price Index (IPV) on Monday, a figure the country’s press have noted is the first annual increase since

Spain’s housing bubble burst at the start of 2008.

The first quarter of 2014 already reflected the positive change with a price drop of only 8% after the 12.6 percent in 2012 and 14.3 percent in 2013. Madrid, with +2.7 percent, is the province with the highest annual increase followed by Valencia (2.3 percent), Andalusia, Balearics, Cantabria, Catalonia, Galicia, Murcia and Melilla. Navarre with -6.1 percent and Extremadura (-3.5 percent) were the two Spanish regions with the biggest drop in prices. Source: www.thelocal.es

What’s on in Spain: CULTURE: La Mercè Festival, Barcelona, September 19th-24th Every year since 1902, the Catalan capital has held a massive street festival — the city’s biggest — in honour of the Virgin of La Mercè, patron saint of Barcelona. Over five days, you can enjoy hundreds of activities ranging from street dance shows and theatre performances to concert and folk dances. The festivities include traditional events like the impressive human castles (castellers) demonstrations and parades of ‘giants’ and ‘big-heads’.

Fiestas de la Vendimia, Jerez de la Frontera, September 9th-14th This wine harvest festival in the Province of Cádiz not only offers a large choice of wine tasting sessions and vineyards tours but also a wealth of activities to chose from, including performances from the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Arts, painting exhibitions, Shakespeare plays, flamenco, salsa and entertainment for kids.http://www.jerez.es

DANCE AND MUSIC: Biennial Flamenco Festival, Sevilla, September 12th-October 5th First held in 1980, this prestigious flamenco festival is celebrated every two years in the Andalusian city of Seville. The three-week long competition features the greatest dancers, vocalists and guitarists in the flamenco world, as well as as well as up-and-coming artists . Performances take place in different host venues throughout the city, mainly theatres but also in hotels or on the street. There are also courses, conferences and seminars. www.labienal.com/en/

DCode Festival 2014, Madrid, September 13th One of the summer’s last musical gasps, this indie-inflected event in the grounds of Madrid’s Complutense University includes the only Spanish concert of proto-hipster Beck. Also playing this year are British singer Jake Bugg, Bombay Bicycle Club and Spain’s very own Lourdes Hernández, better known as Russian Red. www.dcodefestival.com

Mallorca Rocks Festival The Kaiser Chiefs and DJ Mark Ronson are set to take over the popular resort of Magaluf in September. The Kooks will also return to the Rocks stage, after headlining the 2010 Edition. Ibiza also play hosts to a few last gigs before summer in Spain’s Balearic Islands wraps up. http://www.mallorcarocks.com/

FILM AND THEATRE: International Film Festival, Donostia-San Sebastián, 19th - 27th September This festival in the capital of the Basque Country is internationally recognized. In the past it has hosted the International premieres of Vertigo (A.Hitchcock) and welcomed stars such as Audrey Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor or more recently Meryl Streep and Brad Pitt. This year, Denzel Washington will open the 62nd Edition of the Festival and receive the prestigious Donostia Lifetime achievement Award. www.sansebastianfestival.com/in/

SPORT: La Vuelta, August 23rd-September 14th The Vuelta is one of the world’s biggest bicycle races, along with Le Tour de France and the Giro d’Italia. This year’s tour kicks off in Jerez de la Frontera and will wrap up in Santiago de Compostela after three weeks of brutal competition. Last year Chris Horner, a 42-year-old American rider, won the Tour, becoming the oldest winner of any cycling grand tour. But Spaniards will be hoping that local hero Alberto Contador will take this year’s crown. http://www.lavuelta.com/

FASHION: Fashion week, Madrid, September 11th-16th While 41 recognized designers will show off their latest collections on the catwalks, the 58th edition of Madrid’s Fashion will also give some twenty emerging talents the chance to show what they can do. Interesting innovation this year: the fashion shows will be broadcast live at Conde Duque and near Plaza de Colon, two emblematic venues in Madrid. Watch out for Madrid’s ‘Fashion’s night out’ on September 12th with stores offering special discounts. Find out more at www.ifema.es/

Spain to reopen ‘world’s most dangerous walk’ Malaga authorities have begun work on restoring Andalusia’s infamous Camino del Rey walkway, a nerve-wracking gorge pathway in disrepair that for the past 20 years only adrenaline junkies and experienced climbers have dared to use. El Caminito del Rey, or the King’s Pathway is a well-known trail through the gorge of the Guadalhorce River near the Malaga town of El Chorro — fairly easy if you’re fit and healthy, but next to impossible if you have any kind of fear of heights. “You’re wearing a harness and a helmet but you still have to walk along a narrow concrete path ridden with holes,” The Local Spain editor George Mills explains. “In some sections, the path is missing and you have to climb or scramble over rocks even though there’s a massive drop right next to you. “It’s not that actually difficult: the path is more a mental challenge than a physical one.” Although walking the path is illegal, Mills is one of thousands of locals and foreigners who have dodged lurking police officers to complete the cliffhanging feat.

It took over ten years but Spain has returned to Colombia a huge and priceless find — almost 700 pieces of preColumbian art that Spanish authorities seized over a decade ago in a drug bust. The catalogue of museum-worthy artefacts includes vases decorated with human faces, ceramic bowls decorated with geometric designs in ochre tones, musical instruments, necklaces and even small figures of people — dating from 1400 BC up to the 16th century. “Recovering for our nation these 691 archaeological treasures has a value that is really difficult to put any price on. They are from many of our (indigenous) cultures, and getting them home took years,” Colombian Foreign Minister María Ángela Holguín said at a briefing, presenting 50 of the remarkable pieces. The artefacts — from Calima, Narino,

Thanks to a budget of €2.2 million, a 4-kilometre (2.5 mile) segment – including the notoriously hairy cliff-side section of the walkway through the socalled Desfiladero de los Gaitanes – is being done up with 500 tonnes of new metal parts replacing those that have fallen down the ravine or rusted away. Some 70 percent of the restoration work has already been completed, The President of Malaga Province’s Elías Bendodo told local daily Diario Sur recently. Despite the hands-on support the project is receiving from mountaineers and climbers, some conservationists fear the improvements will result in excessive tourist numbers and lead to a negative impact on the area surrounding El Chorro Gorge. San Agustin, Quimbaya, Sinu and other groups — had been spirited out of Colombia in 2001 before being seized from drug traffickers by Spanish authorities in 2003. The collection was found in a Madrid home, and is estimated to be worth around €5 million ($6.6 million). The objects’ return was “a triumph against the illegal traffic of cultural artifacts the likes of which has never been seen before,” Fabián Sanabria told Spain’s El País newspaper. “This collection of pieces is the largest that has been recuperated in the last few decades. Never before has a whole museum been repatriated,” he added. An exhibition of the pieces is now planned. Source: www.thelocal.es

Spain’s jobless rate edges up in August

A total of 8,070 people joined Spain’s jobless queues in August, the first rise in unemployment after six months of improvement The rise means there were 4,427,930 Spaniards registered as looking for work at the country’s unemployment offices the end of August, the figures from Spain’s employment ministry show. The number of people signed on to the country’s social security system fell by 97,582 to 16,649,521, the figures reveal. Spain usually experiences a rise in unemployment numbers in August, with the average rise for the month over the last decade being 49.025, according to the employment ministry. In 2013, however, unemployment fell by 31 in the eighth month of the year. “The result for the last month was possible to predict given there’s a strong

seasonal effect in August independent of the general state of the economy,” Secretary of State for Social Security Tomás Burgos said on Tuesday. “The outcome allows us to maintain our forecasts in terms of our job growth expectations in the medium term,” he added. The August unemployment figures mean there are now 270,853 fewer people registered as looking for work in Spain than a year ago. A total of 72,955 contracts for ongoing positions were also signed in August, up 16.81 percent on a year ago. However these ongoing contracts represented only 6.43 percent of all the contracts signed in August, with 1,135,109 temporary contracts making up the remainder of the new positions created. Gravel is often used between drifts of drought-tolerant plants, including lavender, olive trees, rosemary and vines. Crisp, clean lines are an intrinsic part of contemporary design, which can be applied to either small or larger gardens. Equally important is the use of space, geometric layout and the absence of too many fussy details and clutter. This all adds up to a garden that could be the perfect antidote to a hectic lifestyle - dynamic yet relaxing. Materials tend to be natural and timeless such as stone, slate and wood, and plants become just one part of the architecture – think clipped hedges, specimen trees and simple blocks of planting. Water is often used to create reflection, movement or sound. Read more on: www.rhs.org.uk

Having a constant supply of cut flowers for your house need not be an unachievable dream. Growing cut flowers is a productive and relatively inexpensive hobby, whether growing simply to display in your own home, to sell or to give as presents. Other linked hobbies are flower arranging and drying flowers. Many healthy herbaceous and shrubby plants, in fact, grow all the better for being picked, preventing seeds from setting and obligingly producing more and more blooms e.g. Sweet Peas, Sweet William, Carnations. a sufficient and reliable source of watering as cut flowers will not survive drought conditions. How To Grow Most flowering plants prefer a sunny position with well drained, fertile soil and shelter from winds. You can grow flowers mixed into your existing garden. You can sew seed into pots, seed trays or even directly into the ground. The sweet pea is an annual. It is known for its glorious sweet scent associated with English country gardens but can be successful here in Spain. Plant seeds in pots Oct to Dec. Success as always depends on preparation i.e. quality of seeds, making a good potting mix, using compost and watering in. Place seeds 2.5cm deep, six to a pot; keep in a sunny spot and net to protect from birds. Once seedlings have three pairs of leaves, nip off the top shoot. In spring, plant out in a well-prepared plot – Sweet Peas are ideal for growing against walls and pergolas. Plant 20-25cms apart, train and stake - you can make a perfumed sweet pea screen by growing plants up canes. Keep moist at roots and feed every 2 weeks & watch for aphids. Flowers from May to Aug and pick regularly to maximise yield.

There are also a few new professional faces coming to the floor for the first time so we will have to see what their experience can provide as the show develops. Gone from the show are James Jordan (currently appearing in Celebrity Big Brother), Artem Chigvintsev, Robin Windsor, and Anya Garnis. In come Trent Whiddon, Tristan MacManus, Joanne Clifton and a return of Natalie Lowe who last appeared in 2012. Also bowing out is the love him or hate him legend Bruce Forsyth to be replaced by Claudia Winkleman who did the Sunday show with Tess Daley last year. Brucie will be appearing in the Christmas show and also in the one off specials such as the Children in Need and as far as I am concerned

will be sorely missed. The contestants this year are: Wildlife expert Steve Backshall who will be partnering Ola Jordan. Gibraltar unveils world’s Spanish cities ‘cash in’ on Jewish heritage first Stone Age hashtag

Archaeologists working in a cave on the tiny British enclave have unearthed the world’s earliest hashtag, engraved on a wall by Neanderthals some 40,000 years ago. Long before mundane daily tasks were hashtagged by the world’s social media addicts on sites such as Twitter and Facebook, some of our ancestors appear to have taken a liking to the criss-cross lines as a form of art. More importantly, scientists see it as proof that Neanderthals were capable of “subtle symbolic thought”, online magazine the New Scientist reports, a theory which had previously been

dismissed. “Creating paintings or carvings in caves is seen as a cognitive step in human development,” said Professor Joaquín Rodríguez-Vidal of the University of Huelva, one of the leading researchers on the project. “This behaviour was considered exclusive to modern humans and has been used as an argument to distinguish our direct ancestors from ancient man, including Neanderthals.” Gibraltar Museum director Clive Finlayson, who The Local spoke to previously about his findings on Neanderthals’ BBQ cooking methods, discovered the etchings in The Rock’s famous Gorham’s cave in 2012. Alongside the eight rock engravings measuring about 3 sqm (10 sqf), Finlayson and his team unearthed 294 stone Born in February tools dating back at least 2012, Billy and 39,000 years. Cities across Spain have banded together to boost their profile of their Jewish heritage sites but some critics argue the move is more about tourism dollars than anything else. Just outside the 11th-century walls that surround Avila in central Spain, rows of granite slabs surrounded by neatly trimmed grass mark the spot where ancient Jewish graves lay. Local authorities spent €250,000 ($335,000) to build the memorial garden — which opened last year — on the grounds of a medieval Jewish cemetery in what used to be an empty field behind a monastery. A plaque explains, in Spanish and English, that the cemetery was dismantled after Spain’s King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella in 1492 banished Jews from Spain as part of a policy to unite the country under the banner of Catholicism. The garden illustrates how five centuries after Spain expelled its Jews and moved to erase all traces of their existence, cities across the country are searching for the remains of their medieval synagogues, restoring Jewish cemeteries and identifying old Jewish neighbourhoods. “We knew there was a Jewish cemetery there and we decided to highlight it,” Avila mayor Miguel Angel Garcia Nieto said at his office in the city’s imposing 19th century town hall. “We can’t live with our backs to the reality that many people around the world have their roots here in Spain, including Avila, whose ancestors were forced to leave,” he added. Although estimates vary, historians believe at least 200,000 Jews lived in Spain before the 1492 expulsion. Many who refused to convert or leave were burned at the stake. Jews made rich contributions to science, music and literature before they were driven out from the old Jewish quarters in medieval Spanish cities such as Toledo and Seville where they lived among Christians and Muslims. Now two dozen cities and towns across Spain have banded together in a Network of Jewish Quarters to try to revive and promote their Jewish history by building monuments, putting up signs identifying historic sites and hosting concerts, lectures and other cultural activities. The push to revive Jewish heritage sites comes as Spain this year introduced a draft law to ease the path to citizenship for Sephardic Jews — those originating from the Iberian peninsula — who can prove

they are descended from those who were expelled. The network, founded in 1995, signed a cooperation agreement two years ago with Spain’s tourist board, Turespana, to promote its sites in Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and the United States, which have large Sephardic Jewish populations. Last year, it launched an online project with Google, which offers historical timelines, maps and photographs of ancient landmarks of Jewish life in Spain. Economics plays central role Critics argue the effort to revive and promote Jewish heritage sites is as much about trying to attract tourists as it is about honouring the country’s Jewish legacy. They say local governments, in their eagerness to attract tourists, are often promoting old Jewish quarters with no original structures, cemeteries whose location is still undetermined and synagogues that have little trace of ever having been synagogues. “The economic component here plays a central role because if it was solely about reclaiming the past then doing so would entail more than refurbishing some old buildings and alleyways,” said Michael Freund, a syndicated columnist for the Jerusalem Post. “It would also require refurbishing the national consciousness and memory. Very little about the Inquisition, which sought to hunt down Jews and torment them, is being taught in Spanish schools.” Spanish officials involved in the effort to highlight Jewish heritage say its not fair to say they are motivated by the search for more tourists. “We don’t ask anyone who visits us what their religion is,” said Garcia Nieto, the mayor of Avila. Assumpcio Hosta, the secretary general of the Network of Jewish Quarters, concedes that some member cities have few physical remnants of Spain’s Jewish past. “There are some cities where the buildings are no longer there, the streets are no longer there, you don’t see so much but instead there are many documents from that period which are of interest,” she said. “It’s not that they don’t have the history, it’s that the history is not so visible,” she added. SOLTIMES SEPTEMBER 2014

braben’s blog... Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. David, who runs the Albox Computer Club, sent me a very interesting program. Well, interesting to a “TechnoGeek” like me anyway! It was a new program on partitioning. So let’s start the usual way, as taught my all my University Professors – Ask the question that will set the piece. So, in deference to there wisdom I will start with - What is partitioning? Will I ever need to use it? What makes this product different from the hundreds of other partitioning programs already out there that have proven themselves? Partitioning is the process of separating your hard into distinct sections. Think of it as a huge folder. You get yourself several wads of paper and put them all into this folder and you are happy. As time goes on and your notes, sketches and thoughts, start to get a little disorganised and difficult to find. What do you do? Well at University, we were advised to get separators which were simply coloured pieces of card that clipped into place to create separate sections. This is exactly what a partition is, nothing more or less. Having said that, the methods use to make, and record the exact locations and sizes, are a little more involved and beyond the scope of this short article. Having said that - “it just works”. This leads nicely onto the next question which was ‘Will I ever need to use it’? Now the answer to this can be a little thorny in as much as there is no right or wrong answer. If you have window 7 or newer then a certain amount of partitioning has already been done for you without your knowledge or consent. This is done for your benefit and must never be tweaked, tinkered and in any way messed with. Should anything go badly wrong with your system, this hidden partition should contain all the information that is needed to correct the

problem. As this isn’t perfect technology, things go wrong and I have had to repair a windows 8.1 laptop in an endless ‘Repair’ loop. I suggest to everyone that they have a ‘Data’ partition where you will store all your documents, music, videos and family pictures. Also on this partition I would keep a working copy of your system ‘just in case’! Now you will have three (3) partitions. Number 1 is hidden and made by Microsoft to assist in repairs and is essential. Number two (2) is the main Windows 7, 8, 8.1 Operating System, which holds all your programs, applications and ‘Apps’ (a moron’s word if ever there was one!). Finally, there is my suggestion that you have this ‘Data’ partition. By separating your very important data from the less important OS (Operating System) you create a digital safety net that will reduce the chance of loosing your data and should your OS go wrong youw will have your data safe and the opportunity to correct these problems and get on with your life. What makes this program better than any of the others? In a word versatility! Unlike some other programs, “Partition Assistant” (better tell you which one it is) uses ‘Wizards’ to assist in you making the right decisions for you separations. It will also allow you to just ‘dive in’ and use it in an unrestrained manner (with predictably dangerous effects). The thing that I will be playing with, is the section that will allow you to make a working version of Windows on a memory stick – something that Microsoft want you to spend an unreasonably large amount on money to do. It is only a little thing, but I can find dozens of uses for this clever little add-on. I’m now off to Jack’s Bar in Albox for my Friday afternoon computer clinic! Maybe make a suggestion using the email address under this article for further article that will be useful to you.

space

Neil Armstrong was first to walk on

the moon; Buzz Aldrin followed him fifteen minutes later, immediately getting his name into the record books by becoming the first to pee on the moon. NASA edited the live feed so on Earth people didn’t see Buzz undoing his flies; no seriously the space suits were fitted with special bags designed for that mundane purpose. The special bags were shaped like condoms; NASA designed three sizes for the Apollo astronauts to choose from before they blasted off. Men being men, they all chose LARGE. So to preserve their masculinity the bags were renamed

large, gigantic and humongous. Space has a smell; on the Space Station, astronauts returning from space walks have reported an aroma reminiscent of grilled steak and welding fumes in the airlock. NASA has been unable to replicate the smell on earth. The weird smell is the nearest astronauts get to tasting a steak as the near zero gravity makes liquids rise so they get blocked noses as the mucus rises in their bodies. This makes tasting doubly difficult as not only are they bunged up but food aromas float away before they can reach their taste buds. Earth with our one solitary moon has nothing on Saturn which has over 150 moons. Venus on the other hand is the only planet without a moon. Venus at 462C is the hottest planet in the solar system due to its greenhouse atmosphere being 96% Carbon Dioxide. It’s also the only planet to rotate anti clockwise around the Sun. Jupiter is the largest planet in the Solar System; it’s two and half times bigger than the rest of the planets combined.

Stat Attack!!!

I think statistics are daft. Personally, I’ve never been a huge number fan and I don’t think that the Nobel Mathematics Prize lot are going to come knocking at my door anytime soon, unless they need directions to Albox. Despite my reluctance to fully embrace statistics, numbers are everywhere you look. Have you noticed how so many people are desperate to quote percentages and other statistical mysteries to us? Having said that, some do make me smile. I was browsing through something last week and stumbled across an article which claimed that in 2012 more than 50000 Americans had received medical attention for injuries related to jewellery. Now that’s a statistic I enjoy and I have to admit to passing a pleasing half hour trying to work out exactly how so many people managed to inflict injuries on themselves with their rings, bracelets and necklaces. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to come up with any answer to that one. Then I came across an advertisement for personalised number plates. I know there are an awful lot of people who spend bucket loads of money on these things, but quite why some of them are worth more than a second hand air bag is beyond me. Apparently, if you are so inclined, you can pay several hundred Euros for number plate SOF 714D. Of course, you recognise this immediately as spelling out Soft Lad…don’t you? No, neither did I, but, whoever paid for that plate is fully deserving of that title. Then there are the silly figures, you know, the ones Economists use and that are, quite frankly, ridiculous. Only last week I was reading somewhere that a particular bank was worth 2 trillion Euros. Do you know what a trillion of anything looks like? No me neither, although there are times aren’t there when you feel like you must have that much in short change in your pockets or purse. Fortunately for us, statisticians have researched this question-of course they have, well what else do they have to do all day. Apparently, if you had the inclination to lay a trillion banknotes end to end, they’ll reach the whole length of whichever check-in queue you’ve just joined at the airport! But you see that’s my point about statistics being daft. Rather than spending ages carefully laying so much money end to end, why on earth don’t they just spend the stuff? Graham is married to Helen and has a daughter, Alice. He lives part of the year near Albox, but works in Qatar, teaching. The red spot is a storm that’s raged for hundreds of years and is larger than three Earths. One of its 57 moons Ganymede is larger than the planet Mercury. Although Mercury is closest to the sun it’s not the hottest. A Mercury day last six months as it spins very slowly on its axis, so the side facing the sun is hot enough to melt Zinc at 420C whilst the dark side is cold enough at minus173C to freeze Hydrogen. Mars has the tallest mountain in the solar system; its 22,000 metres high, three times higher than Everest. The gravity on Mars is only one third as strong as on Earth so things get much higher. Neptune takes 164 years to orbit the sun and is seventeen times heavier than Earth. It’s the eighth furthest planet from the sun but not the coldest, that award goes to Uranus, the ‘butt’ of so many jokes. The temperature on Neptune is a balmy -200C compared to Uranus being -224C, all year round. That would turn the oxygen we breathe

down here on Earth to ice. Both Uranus and Neptune are about half the size of Saturn and four times larger than Earth. The Sun is already so big a million Earths could fit inside; its 15 million degrees Celsius at the centre as nuclear fusion converts hydrogen into helium. In five billion years it will have burnt all the hydrogen and start on the helium. Over 130 million more years it will expand into a red giant, eventually reaching a size big enough to consume Earth. Once burnt out it will shrink down to the size of our world yet still weigh the same; becoming a White Dwarf. Back down to Earth; in about 140 million years the Earth’s slowing rotation will mean a 25 hour day. All the planets except Earth are named after mythological gods. The Moon is drifting away from us by four centimetres a year so already in my lifetime it’s moved two metres further away.

Statistics in Spain Crime rates in Spain remain among the lowest in the EU according to the latest Interior Ministry crime report. However, since the economic crisis began in 2008, there has been a steep increase in domestic burglaries and theft as a result. In 2012 the number of burglaries in homes rose by 25.4%. The message to expat residents is not to panic. There are some simple precautions to take, as you would back in the UK, such as fitting security grills, installing exterior lights and alarms, being careful about what Acontent is posted on social networks, especially anything to do with trips and holidays away from home. As soon as you discover you’ve been burgled, whether it’s a break-in or theft at your home, first call the police. Don’t touch anything until they arrive. A police report will be needed to process your claim. Then secure your home to avoid further damage, board up any broken windows, make a list of damaged or missing belongings, detail the damage to your home resulting from the burglary, taking photographs of damaged windows or door. At this point, you can call the claims department of your home insurance

company. We advise you to have your policy on hand when you call.

Peace-of-mind with Linea Directa

We understand that your peace-of-mind is important, especially in your home. Our claims department will take a full statement of the circumstances of the incident. We will check the insurance coverage with you explaining all the procedures. If emergency repairs are required from locksmiths to glaziers, we will help you swiftly handle your claim and get things back to normal as soon as possible. Fortunately, incidents of theft in Spain are relatively small compared to other EU countries, however should you be burgled, your homeowner’s insurance policy will cover the loss or destruction of personal property if it’s stolen from your home.

Hold-up outside the home

In many cases, your home insurance policy may cover you for any incidents that occur outside your home. Should you be the victim of a hold-up outside your premises your personal belongings are covered. We will ensure replacement documents are quickly and efficiently dealt with, and if required, arrange the locks on your home to be changed. We hope the information provided in this article is of interest. If you would like to contact Linea Directa please call 902 123 161 More information on Linea Directa online at www.lineadirecta.com

News Apartment and Beach Still Preferred Holiday Rental Options

Demand for rented holiday homes in Spain has remained stable during 2014, according to the Fourth Annual Analysis of Trends in Holiday Rentals prepared by the travel website, TripAdvisor. The survey, of 1,200 Spanish users between 28th and 30th July, is not limited to the summer season but aims to reflect the preferences of the traveller for the whole of 2014. In fact, 68% of those questioned said they would choose the holiday rental as their preferred option at any time of the year. “The benefits highlighted by users of this type of accommodation include the freedom they have compared with a stay in a hotel, better prices, more privacy and savings on meals,” said Banca Zayas, head of communications for TripAdvisor in Spain. He added: “However, this year the price has become more important with respect to 2013, now ranking as the third most important factor when choosing a holiday rental.” With regard to the type and location of the properties preferred by Spanish travellers, 55% of those surveyed still choose an apartment and the beach as the most desirable options, and although one week is usually the ideal period for 34% of the respondents, “there has been a slight reduction in the percentage of travellers who choose to rent for two weeks (25%

versus 26% in 2013),” said Zayas. This year’s second choice of length of rental period is “just less than a week or a weekend”, (currently at 26% compared with 20% in 2013). According to the study, other determining factors for renting during the holiday period are a good location (85%), a good environment (81%), that the property has a dishwasher, television or air conditioning (67%), that it be outward facing (59%) or that it has parking available (50%). Meanwhile, El Mundo reported that the online platform HomeAway has also released data on bookings made by its users for the period from June to September 2014, which indicates an increase of almost 11% in the demand for holiday rental accommodation in Spain this summer, compared to the same period in 2013. Among the destinations most requested by Spanish users of this portal are Andalucía (especially Cádiz and Málaga), the Balearic Islands and Valencia. The portal highlighted the continued growth in the Spanish interest for this type of accommodation for the summer season (representing 20%), exceeded only by the number of requests made by French travellers (35.4%) and Germans (22%). Australia to welcome young Spanish workers

Young Spaniards will soon be able to take advantage of Australia’s Work and Holiday visa scheme to work in the Asia–Pacific nation, Spain’s ambassador to the country has said. The agreement will mean Spaniards aged 18 to 31 will be able to live, work and study in Australia for 12 months.

The visa allows holders to work full time as long as they don’t clock up more than six months with a single employer. They can also study for up to four months in the same course. Under the visa conditions, holders can also leave the country and return on multiple occasions. Australians will also have the same the privileges under the agreement expected to be finalized shortly, Spain’s El Mundo newspaper reported. The visa scheme will be up and running within 12 to 18 months although provisional arrangements could be in place by as early as the

end of the year, Spain’s ambassador to Australia Enrique Viguera told El Mundo. With youth unemployment in Spain currently running at over 50 percent — against 6.1 percent in Australia — the news is likely to be well received. However, there are conditions. The visa is not renewable and applicants are expected to arrive with A$5,000 (around €3,500). They should also have “functional” English and meet educational requirements. These requirements for Spaniards are yet to be published, but El Mundo reports that students should have completed at least two years of a tertiary qualification. Visa numbers are limited as well, with many of the first batch expected to be snapped up by Spanish students currently in Australia. Source: www.thelocal.es

Bryans Blinds

With retirement savings dwindling, more and more of us are wondering if we’ll be able to retire as planned. Many baby boomers, especially, will have to keep working long past traditional retirement age just to make up for the beating their retirement plans have taken in recent years. Or maybe not...

Awnings, Fly Screens and Interior Blinds We also repair Persianas/Outside Blinds

take up a new activity once they move.

It’s quite possible that you can still retire as planned…and maybe even retire earlier than expected. How? By retiring overseas... A foreign retirement isn’t for everyone, of course. Family obligations may be an issue for some people. Others might not be comfortable in a place where they don’t speak the language. But if you’re the adventuresome type…or if you’ve dreamed of living in an exotic location–maybe on a sultry tropical beach, in a pristine mountain hideaway, or in a sophisticated, culturally rich city–with better weather and a lower cost of living, retirement overseas may be for you. If you dream of moving overseas, you probably look forward to a low-stress, affordable lifestyle. It’s likely to be a healthier lifestyle, too. Here are some reasons why....

If you’re near the sea, for instance, swimming or strolling the beach may become part of your new routine.

Healthy eats

With a warm climate comes a long growing season for fruits and vegetables. Expats often praise the quality and freshness of the produce they can buy locally. You can choose to eat junk food if you want. But fresh, exotic produce can tempt you to eat more healthily. If you do, your health—not to mention your taste buds—will thank you. Of course, in warm weather it’s also tempting to lie by the pool and just do nothing. That’s okay, too—it lowers all that unhealthy stress.

Before you know it, you may ease into an active lifestyle with lots of exercise…which health experts agree is key to keeping us looking and feeling young.

Fresh air and sunshine can also help you make friends. (Health experts say that social networking helps us live longer, too.) Ever stayed home from a social event because you couldn’t face a cold, wet night out? In your new warm-weather home, you’re more likely to ask, “Where’s the party?” and enjoy the evening stroll there and back.

Some expats actually choose an overseas destination because they can practice a favorite sport there, such as golf, hiking or fishing. Others

If you live in a city, you may soon be walking to shops and markets, or just exploring your new home town on foot. When adventure or fresh discoveries lie around every corner, long walks don’t feel like exercise.

Most of us dream of retiring someplace warm. Snow and cold are things we gladly leave behind with our old 9-to-5 lives. And when the weather is warm and sunny, it’s easy to spend more time outside in the fresh air.

EU commissioner warns of further action against banks paying shares and allowances as UK sets out its case against cap Banks seeking to circumvent the EU’s cap on bonuses for top staff could face further action from European regulators, a senior official has warned. Michel Barnier, a vice-president of the European commission, with responsibility for financial services, said there could be “a coordinated policy response” to banks that dodge the EU bonus cap by paying allowances to their top staff. The warning comes as the UK government sets out its case on Monday against the EU bonus cap in Europe’s highest court. The EU limited bankers’ bonuses to one year’s salary, or twice that amount with shareholders’ approval, as part of a broader package of reforms aimed at encouraging banks to behave more responsibly, following widespread public anger at bailed-out banks paying lavish bonuses. In response to the EU clampdown, which came into effect this year, several banks decided to pay their top executives allowances in cash or shares, instead of a bonus. Stuart Gulliver, the chief executive of HSBC, gets an additional £32,000 a week in allowances in top of his £1.2m salary. Bailed-out banks Lloyds Banking Group and Royal Bank of Scotland have awarded their top executives shares, while Barclays are among other banks with similar schemes. In a letter to the European Banking Authority, which monitors the industry, Barnier said: “I would like to underline my strong concerns with regard to continuing reports of the use of these allowances. It is important to show a collective pro-active stance

on this important matter and address the claims made that the spirit – if not the letter – of union law is being disregarded.” The European Banking Authority launched an investigation into allowance payments in June and was due to report at the end of the year, to allow regulators to take action ahead of next year’s paysetting round at the banks. But Barnier is now urging them to speed up their work. “I would therefore be very grateful if you could share with us the results of your work on this issue as soon as possible and at the latest by the end of September, in order to ensure that we can address any concerns in a timely manner through a coordinated policy response.” Barnier can propose amendments to the law, but any substantial re-working would be seen through by his successor, who has yet to be named. Barnier’s successor is expected to take office on 1 November, under a European commission headed by former Luxembourg prime minister Jean-Claude Juncker. After being outvoted 26 to one on the EU bankers’ bonus cap in 2013, the UK launched a legal challenge at the European court of justice. A Treasury spokesman said the cap had been “rushed through without a proper impact assessment” and “could undermine financial stability by leading to higher fixed costs at banks”. The UK government will make its case today at a hearing in Luxembourg, but the ECJ is not expected to make a ruling until the end of the year at the earliest. Read more: www.theguardian.com

“We were like two expectant parents waiting for all our babies to arrive.” Lorna qualified as a dance teacher when she was 17 and she soon became the owner and principal of an extremely successful dance school in Brighton with classes as diverse as Latin American, freestyle disco, country and western as well as the more traditional ballroom dancing. “ I ate, slept and dreamt dancing.” Once she was diagnosed with sarcoidosis in 2007 she was forced into giving up dancing so Lorna and partner, Alan had to consider other options. Alan was happy to emigrate to Florida. “ I think Alan would have been perfectly happy to sell CocoCola in Sea World.” And the second choice? Spain of course. Andalucia to be exact, a popular home for budding expat writers and farmers. Breeding alpacas was seen as a lucrative business. You might remember Alan Parks’ book which also documented their move to The Olive Mill in Cordoba province with their virtually insurmountable complications over their car and livestock as well as their solar energy. Whilst there is some overlap-after all they did share this experiencethe stories are not identical but do complement each other. My advice is not to read them together otherwise you might

attempting to breed alpacas as in the sad case of Back Dancer can transform the stalwart into an emotional wreck. When the alpacas first arrived at The Olive Mill there was so much elation. They were quickly mated and the air of expectancy was optimistic before disaster struck. Alan had to remind Lorna: “ If you have livestock, you are going to have deadstock.” As well as the managerie of cats, dogs, domesticated and strays, Marybelle the pig and numerous fowls, there are some delightful accounts of day-outs to Malaga and Fuengirola and Cordoba, the Mezquita and the Jewish Quarters with the infinite Spanish fiestas and expat barbecues who share the same dream of breeding alpacas. Then of course there are frequent visits from family and friends to endear you to want to share Lorna and Alan’s life here in Montoro, the good times and the bad ones. “Are we bonkers?” “Yes, maybe we are! Let’s call it an adventure……………….” Available as an ereader from Amazon.

Lorna initially set up a blog, encouraged by numerous friends as a way of keeping in touch which reads like a diary, spilling out her heart and emotions of the risks taken in adopting a hermit-like existence, thwarted at every crossroad with unceasing obstacles. She admitted that “nothing is plain sailing” and wearing her heart on her sleeve had made her vulnerable to emotional outbursts and fits of depression. “Don’t be indebted to anyone, except in your obligation to love them.” So wrote St Paul in his letter to the Christians in Rome; and what wise advice indeed. For of course we’ve all seen in recent years the danger of allowing debt to escalate, as a little more care in that regard would have prevented the immense damage caused to so many by the recent recession. But the second, more positive part of his advice, I suggest, could have even greater impact, if only we’d all really love each other, recognising the debt we have in this regard. It’s so easy and natural to put myself and my interests before those of others, but in his letter, St Paul remind us that this attitude indicates a lack of love. So I ask myself:- Would I deliberately hurt someone I love? Would I use them? Would I cheat them or steal from them? Of course not! On the contrary I’d happily work without charge to help those I really love, and freely forgive their misdemeanours. And that’s just how St Paul says I should treat everyone. How much happier and more at peace our World would be, if only we could really love others in this way – never worrying about the slights we receive, but only concerning ourselves with the welfare of others. An impossible dream? Well perhaps; but Paul does offer some help. For he continues his theme, reminding us that our ultimate goal isn’t here in this World, but in heaven, and that time therefore is very much of the essence. For if this life is all we have to look forward to, then of course our love for others will be somewhat limited. But as soon as we broaden our horizons and see this brief existence in the context of eternity, then suddenly our immediate self-interest seems trivial and the need to reach out in love to those around, whilst yet we have time, becomes the natural response to the incredible love we see God continuously showing us. A cat-mad couple have started their own online feline furniture shop offering a range of platforms for pets to sleep, play and relax on. Megan Hanneman and partner Mike’s business - Catastrophi Creations - stems from the couple going the extra mile to welcome new kitten Ickle to their Michigan home. “We were trying to design a cat wall for him to climb and couldn’t figure out how to bridge the gap where our hallway was. Then it hit me! We needed a bridge,” said Mike. “Since we were bringing home a kitten, we decided that it was safest to add ropes along the length of it and thus we created the Indiana Jones Cat Bridge. “Little did we know that Ickle would completely fall in love with his bridge and would be sleeping on it almost every night.” The couple realised that other cats would probably enjoy using something similar and decided to set up their own online shop. Mike says that all of their items are fully customisable, giving each customer a very personal experience. “We’ve been lucky enough to have two very cute cats, Ickle and Heisenberg, who are very active and eager to test out our new ideas,” he said. “When we build a new piece of furniture, they help us decide how fun or functional the piece is. They definitely let us know what does and doesn’t work. Sorce: web.orange.co.uk

gravity and folding in on itself, and I wondered how one plastic nut would manage to hold up four arms laden with wet washing, bearing in mind the sleekness of the central pole. I quickly discovered – it doesn’t! As it stood in our back garden all flopsadaisical I could imagine that as a work of modern art it was probably worth millions; however, as a functioning washing line it wasn’t worth its component parts. As we say in the southwest ‘Andsome is what ‘andsome does, and this ‘andsome wasn’t doing anything! I called for reinforcements, and Pete appeared, armed with a Jubilee clip. ‘That’ll keep it up!’ he prophesied, as he tightened the clip in a stranglehold around its throat. It did, for the first load of washing. But by the second load its artistic temperament and lack of moral fibre had re-

asserted itself; the clip had slipped down, the arms had folded inwards, and the washing sagged in sad and soggy folds. By now I was less than enamoured with it; I would go so far as to say I was peeved. I voiced my dissatisfaction emphatically over the wall to Andy next door, who galloped to the rescue, upended the offender in order to get a better grip on it, pushed the clip back up, gave it a stern talking-to and replaced it in its holder. It retaliated in style – Instead of falling down, the arms popped off the top! Defiantly it hung, arms akimbo, washing dragging the gravel, like a mutant but nevertheless elegant, windmill. I was beyond swearing. My rage was deep, silent and implacable. I will not be defied by a household object; I will get that washing line up, or perish in the attempt! I’m going to stick a couple of screws through its gizzard – that should josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk learn it!

Thinking Outside the Box

We were talking recently about the commercials we remember from those far off days of the late fifties and early sixties. The ones where the jingles were so catchy, some of us Baby Boomers still hum them today. Murray Mints; Esso; Macleans Toothpaste; Coates Cider and Rael-Brook Shirts to name a few. Then there were those old black and white television programme; legends of the time such as Take Your Pick, I Love Lucy, Armchair Theatre, No Hiding Place and Wagon Train, And for the younger viewers, those great Saturday tea time series: Robin Hood, William Tell and The Buccaneers . . . they don’t make heroes like Dan Tempest anymore. We listed off twenty or so programmes that we remembered and the thing that struck me was the variety that was available, even though there were just two channels to choose from. Reviewing some of those vintage programmes, it was a surprising reminder just how many of the young actors went on to become stars, like Burt Reynolds and Clint Eastwood, but also sad to think of those who are no longer with us, such as Robert Shaw and Dennis Weaver. It was a natural progression I suppose, to compare these oldies with some of the dross that we see today not to mention the endless

repeats. But it’s not all bad of course especially as we seem to view the past through deeply rose tinted spectacles much of the time, but when we watched an episode from the new series of Through The Keyhole introduced by the aptly named Keith Lemon, it made us long for the days of David Frost and Loyd Grossman. The emphasis then was on the home and the celebrities themselves, now it seems it’s all about Mr Lemon. The soaps, if you are into that sort of thing, have definitely improved beyond recognition as far as the quality of acting is concerned, although they still drink non-existent tea from empty mugs and chew exaggeratedly after putting morsels of food the size of a gnats kneecap into their mouths. And I wish they would put a bit more effort into taking the actors through the rudiments of the trade or profession they are portraying. A ‘chef’ in one of them gives the impression that buttering bread would be a challenge. Talking of chefs, the celebrity varieties make me laugh out loud sometimes, not at their jokes or indeed their tasty creations, but at some of the exotic ingredients with unlikely sounding names and which most of us have never heard of and are even less likely to find in a branch of Tesco’s. There was that cheeky chappie Gino D’Acampo this week on his Italian Escape series - which I find fascinating, as much for the beautiful Italian scenery as the cooking - knocking up a massive Florentine steak creation which to be fully authentic he told us, should be served up on a wooden chopping board. What he doesn’t have to do of course is to wash the damn thing

afterwards nor indeed does it fall onto him to scrub the grill, clean the utensils or generally get involved in the kitchen in any way after he has created his masterpiece. And that goes for all of them. James Martin’s Saturday Kitchen looks like a hand grenade has been lobbed in after each programme, and where is he? Winging down the motorway in one of his vintage Ferrari’s leaving the hapless BBC cleaners to put it all back together in time for James and his two vandal guest chefs to give it some more of the same treatment next week. But I still watch and marvel at the food they prepare. It’s just that the likes of you and me who live in the real world will weigh up the amount of shopping and washing up we will have to do if we decide to attempt one of their recipes. As often as not I’ll decide to simply not bother and just stick to a roast chicken again. It’s less trouble that way. One programme I do enjoy is Grand Designs. Mind you I don’t know if it’s included to make for good television or that the individuals who are renovating the properties are duffers at maths, but I find it hard to believe that in almost every case they manage to go over budget. Not small amounts either, but one hundred, two hundred, sometimes three hundred grand. And how do they get hold of such vast amounts of money anyway, especially the ones who look as if they have just come out of the sixth form. Still credit where credit is due. Without them many historic houses that would otherwise have been lost forever, are now restored to their original splendour.

John MacDonald (El Sordo) - www.caratacus.eu

That’ll Learn It

As soon as I released the new whirligig washing line from its restraining plastic cover its arms flopped open, enveloping the top half of me in a determined embrace of metal and line. Gently and patiently I untangled one arm from my head and neck only for another to wind itself around me in a display of misplaced affection. Eventually I overcame this aluminium octopus, straightened its arms and unknotted its line, though how line that is tied at both ends can get a knot in it is a mystery to me. I pushed the arms up and tightened the plastic nut that holds them in place on the central pole. This single nut prevents the whole lot from obeying

alqueria

35

viewpoint Smile, your in Alqueria

The air in the tunnel was dangerously low in oxygen, methane was building up at an alarming rate. At least the removal of excavated earth was progressing well. The final breakthrough was approaching. One last thrust with the improvised shovel, a small avalanche of dry earth and then sunlight, fresh air and freedom. This is how one group of tourists managed to get out of Alqueria with at least some cash still in their possession. The new tourist initiative by the Alquerian establishment was built on a firm foundation of fantastic fabrications and outright lies. On paper Alqueria appeared to be the French Riviera with free beer and dancing girls, in reality it was Scunthorpe on a wet Sunday. Holidaymakers were lured to the village republic with false promises and rigged climatic data. Once there the borders were closed, prices trebled and the unfortunate visitors relieved of their cash and all portable wealth. The system was simple, pick them up from a charter flight at Murcía airport. Drive them into Alqueria. Keep them there until their wallets and tempers had been exhausted. Then drive them back to the airport where the expected return flight never materialises. The Spanish authorities didn’t mind Alquerians passing through their country as long as they didn’t touch anything on the way. Keeping the holiday makers occupied while their cash was being surgically removed was simple enough. Remitroot whisky rendered most of them incapable of logical thought while rigged gaming machines accounted for the rest. Manuela was the main attraction as tourist hostess, she was certainly worth a second look. She brought a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘package holiday’.

As far as complaints were concerned Loco Paco was given the job of Customer Relations Representative. He refused to answer any query without first consulting his imaginary five foot tall pet rodent, Bert. Complainees went away confused, bewildered and in some cases sorry for Paco, but they went away which was the object of the exercise. Visitors soon began begging in the streets, some formed escape committees. Tunnels were started. One group was seen using a vaulting horse, but Rodriquez had already seen that film. A glider was found in an attic and one couple tried to cross the border disguised as a female alpaca. Unfortunately a male alpaca in quizzical mood was roaming on the other side. The couple are still receiving counselling. Those that made it out of Alqueria were forced to commit petty crime in order to pay their way home. The summer tourist season ended with bumper profits for Alqueria. Alqueria now headed the international blacklist for tourist destinations. Some countries were so outraged at the treatment of their nationals they threatened military action.

Leading Removal Company reports on strengthening housing market One of Spain’s top removal companies has reported that they experienced a resurgence in the Spanish housing market during 2013 and it looks like 2014 will be an even busier year. Mat Ford-Dunn, the Managing Director of ‘Advance Moves International Removals’ pointed to the fact that many property values in Spain have now fallen to a much more realistic level and this has definitely resulted in increased house sales. This has been noticed in all regions of Spain as Advance Moves operate their relocation services throughout the mainland. Advance Moves has its main warehouse in Murcia, Spain, with an additional warehouse in Kent in the UK and has had to purchase 5 new vans and trucks to cope with the increased demand over the past year. The UK housing market is also in a state of recovery and increased house sales have resulted in more people selling up and looking to buy in Spain. There are many factors that

tempt expats to Spain, not least the recent periods of turbulent weather, which many parts of the UK have suffered. On the flip side, for economic reasons many British Expats are now able to sell properties in Spain and Advance Moves are often the first choice when it comes to repatriating them back to the UK. Mat was also keen to point out that the increase in demand for their removal services was also down to the level of service and expertise that Advance moves offer to their clients and the fact that many clients had already seen the brightly liveried vehicles on the roads undertaking their removal services. Advance moves is also a member of the British Association of Removers and one of only a few companies that export wrap furniture to provide extra protection for international removals. ‘Our clients know that they are getting a more competitively priced, premium removal service, when compared to the rest of the market. The increased volume of removals enables Advance Moves to offer their clients a more regular and flexible timetable for their individual removal requirements’ Mat sees the trend continuing throughout 2014 with the housing market in the UK and Spain continuing to make steady process. Advance Moves are gearing up for another busy year.

As I glance at the Vauxhall Zafira Tourer I notice that there is something a little different about the rear bumper and it’s not because I’ve reversed into something… In the centre it looks to me as if it can be pushed to reveal a step, such as you might find on a conversion for a disabled motorist. It is only when I lift the boot lid that I notice a lever and wondering what it does, I pull it. This releases the Flex-Fix integrated bike carrier – what a clever idea. I can honestly say that I have never come across a vehicle with such a facility. This is a gadget that I’d expect Q in the James Bond films to dream up. It’s certainly not a gimmick either because I can see how the active family that would typically purchase this vehicle would want to transport their bicycles when they go away on an adventure. And this for me gives the Zafira another dimension from other people movers. This third generation revamp looks slick and appealing from the outside and the bright red finish of the test model certainly does stand out. It is also surprising that despite being a sizeable sevenseater it feels small to drive. If there is difficulty reversing a helpful camera automatically appears in the central display together with helpful beeps that sound when manoeuvring into a tight gap. The third row of seats is nestled underneath the boot and put into position by simply pulling a loop on the back. It’s a comfortable vehicle with plenty of room. That boot is large enough to accommodate a variety of paint tins and other rubbish including a large gas bottle that needs taking to the tip. When the doors are opened at night the interior

is lit up with red lights that are incorporated into the trim, making it feel quite spaceship-like. For a people mover it’s fast, hitting 60mph from standstill in under 11 seconds and it will almost return 70mpg; which means that it is possible to travel 150 miles without even using an eighth of a tank. There is engine stop/start, which although I am used to this these days does perplex me a little. The Zafira has a low bite on the clutch making me wonder whether I have stalled the vehicle. Another issue is the electric handbrake; of which I am not a great fan. You see there’s an automatic hill brake that the driver must put their trust in and I find this difficult. No sooner has the accelerator been pushed and the brake releases and as a result I find myself over revving, which isn’t ideal for economy. Its six speed manual box is generally smooth to use and cruise control is always helpful for long motorway journeys. The high up driving position gives the driver a good view of the road ahead. Parkers, the car experts, say: “Vauxhall has always made some bold claims around inventing the compact people carrier with the original Zafira. While this may be the case, the introduction of cars like the Renault Grand Scenic and Ford Grand C-MAX meant that the Zafira has found itself lagging behind the competition in both style and substance. The manufacturer, however, has slowly been catching up with the competition and with the Vauxhall Zafira Tourer the company looks to have stepped up to the challenge again with a better quality product. It has grown a little and will go head to head with the Grand C-MAX, as well as the larger S-MAX.” Overall, an MPV-beater that will meet family demands. Thader de Rojales 2 Santa Pola 1

Mazarron 4 Yeclano Deportivo B 0

Guest of Honour Moi Gomez was introduced to the crowd before today’s match. Moi is a Rojales Guest of Honour Moi Gomez was introduced to the crowd before today’s match. Moi is a Rojales lad who trained at the club as a youngster. At the age of twenty he now plays for Villareal Santa Pola probably just shaded the first twenty minutes. Jordi was having a good game for Thader and his through ball after twenty one minutes caused a mix up in the Santa Pola defence and Noe lobbed the keeper but the ball was cleared off the line. From the resulting corner Jordi’s cross was headed home by Jose Manuel. After twenty eight minutes Santa Pola had the ball in the net but the flag was up for offside. Just before half time the visitors almost equalised only for Raul to clear off Thader’s line. In the second half Thader were pushing for a second goal and after fifty three minutes they broke through the middle. Miki, the Santa Pola and former Thader keeper, took the Thader player out and the hosts were awarded a penalty but surprisingly Miki was only shown a yellow card. Jose Manuel converted the spot kick to put Thader two up. On the hour Miguel gave away a free kick outside the area from which the visitors pulled one back with a headed goal. The goal completely changed the game and Santa Pola took control. Thader had their backs to the wall but managed to hang on and indeed in the eighty ninth minute only a good save by Miki prevented Thader from increasing their lead. It was a good start to the season by Thader with Jordi in particular having a good game and hopefully in Jose Manuel we have found a goal scorer. Next weekend we are away to new boys Benferri.

A youthful Mazarron team started the new season with a fine win against Yeclano who were considered by some to be one of the better teams in the league. The first half hour was dominated by Mazarron and in particular Cristian Pineda who had two shots punched clear by the keeper and a good cross wasted by lack of support from Said, 7Alfonso (Damien) 6 Enrique, 14 Leaders, the other forwards. 19 Pineda (Chema), 10 Tolo, 8 Israel (Juanillo). However Mazarron took the lead in the 38th minute when Tolo found himself in an onside Man of the Match: Cristian Pineda position onside for and ran on to round the onrushing Yeclano keeper before putting the ball into an empty net. Just before half time the Yeclano keeper again found himself stranded well outside the area and resorted to handling the ball, surprisingly only receiving a yellow card. However justice was done when Tolo blasted the free kick into the net from around 35 yards and Mazarron went to the interval leading 2 – 0. In the early stages of the second half it was the turn of Mazarron’s keeper Conejo to have a touch of nerves. On two occasions fumbled the ball but on each occasion a defender came to his assistance and cleared the danger. Mazarron continued to dominate the game and in the 82nd minute Tolo pounced on a poor back header to complete his hat trick by lobbing the stranded keeper. The final goal of the game came in the 85th minute with Chema running on to a through ball and scoring with ease.Hopefully this performance can be the sign of things to Ken Brooks 865 778 429 - 645 162 808 come and a pointer to a successful season for info@rapidrepairs.es Mazarron. behind zoco sunday market - near quesada Team: 1 Conejo, 2 Lorca, 3 Dani, 4 Antonio, 5
