VELVETONES ESCAPE!

Lorraine Simpson (Chairman of the popular Velvetones Harmony Chorus) just loves holidaying on cruise ships - so she came up with the idea for a social get together and tour of the ship ‘Island Escape’. The ladies set off for Cartagena port and enjoyed a fabulous tour followed by a fantastic lunch. The crew were so attentive and even made a special 90th birthday cake for Jacky, a visiting friend of the Velvetones. The chorus then sang to the delight of sun worshippers around the pool - to rapturous applause! Ross - the entertainments manager, was so

impressed that he treated the chorus to cocktails before checking that there were no stowaways left on board! So - if you are looking for a fun hobby and improved social life come and visit one of the rehearsals, each Wednesday from 9.45 to 12.30 at El Paraiso, Jardin del Mar, Torrevieja (behind Carrefour and McDonalds). Check out our website www.velvetones.org Or call Lorraine on 663 751 773 or Ena on 965 707 598 Visitors will receive a warm welcome! PHOTO BY KRISTOFF

Ten members and friends attended. Vincent Cloney chaired the meeting and guided the disparate contributions through the one and a half hour session. The topics covered the meaning of life from the ancient philosophers to the modern times. The use of social media and censorship imposed by press barons and the search for the truth to the point where news became views were discussed in depth. What is the function of government on moral issues and should uniformed public be left to pick up the information from where ever it could i.e. social media. The right to privacy, trolling and social

networking was covered.

How independent was the BBC? There were many views. Political correctness was defended when the person being offended had no control over the issue e.g. race, sex or colour. But one should have the right to question faiths and religions that they were are a choice not inherited.

“KEEP SMILING THROUGH”

As this year is the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War One, an ensemble of singers, actors, poets and writers have put together a programme to pay tribute to the British men and women whose lives were affected, not only by that war but also by World War Two. We wanted to give the British expat community living in the Murcia Region of Spain an opportunity to commemorate this momentous year and to join us in singing many of the well-known songs of those two periods including “Rose of England”, “We’ll Meet Again”, “Lili Marlene”, “White Cliffs of Dover” and many, many more. The programme also contains humorous sketches and poetry and also some moving verses, some written by a local poet. You will hear what happened when a British soldier came face-toface with a German soldier during the bombings of Saint Hilaire in France in 1944. It’s not all about the men in the Services though – you will hear how an Evacuee survived her years away from her family in the early 1940s and how friendships were made in the Air Raid Shelters.

TV NEWSLETTER

november 2014

Well the hottest September on record broke with rains and cooler weather – lots has been said but our thoughts are with those on “D” sector Camposol who were hit by the Gotta Fria – a flash flood situation. Thankfully, whilst property has been damaged, it seems no one was hurt but Gotta Frias in this region have accounted for fatalities in the past and they can “hit” anyone of us - beware of the autumn rains. Casa Rainbow had a steady 5 days of rain ……… the garden just lapped it up - a welcome relief from the heat – the only complaints were wet smelly dogs and a cat just looking out of the window bewildered ! The wells on the land are functioning – I doubt they are full but the steady rain did soak into the thirsty ground and dry wells of some 2 months are again wet. Nature has some odd inexplicable moments – walking the dogs after the rains we ventured into the rambla where a steady stream was flowing ……… dogs loved it …….. But where did the abundance of mature frogs come from ……… just days after the hottest period on record how did they spawn , tadpole and develop into maturity in 5 days ? TV NEWS ………….. Those of you with Manhattan recording digiboxes should be aware that Manhattan have released a software upgrade for the boxes – fairly minor but does resolve some issues with recordings. The upgrade is version 1.2.6 – you can check your software version by going into “menu” and “information” – anything under 1.2.6 should be upgraded. The Manhattan website has free full and easy instructions to upgrade but if you “are not that way inclined” we will do it for you for a nominal fee of euro5.00 (when we are in your area) – just ask us. Do you watch Spanish TV from a normal TV antenna ? Then you may be about to have issues with interference – the government has sold the adjoining frequencies to the mobile phone companies who will roll out 4G (super fast internet on your smart mobile phone) over the coming months. This may cause you to have unwatchable Spanish TV – there are solutions – if your signal is good and strong then you may just need a filter in the supply line – if the signal is weaker you

may have to upgrade the antenna with or without a filter …………. If your Spanish TV goes unwatchable then contact us for a solution. There have been some new channels added to FREESAT and SKY watchers – ITVbee , True Drama , truTV are three of the more watchable ones – they have some good TV on them – have a look. Viewers with SKY or official FREESAT boxes will have had the channels added to their EPG listings (electronic programme guide) automatically just search the listings to find them. Viewers on “cheapy” non official boxes will need to rescan to get them on the listings – ask us if you want them but can not find them. Viewers on Rainbows SKY systems will need us to load the channels – ask us to do it. Over the last month or so I have had several requests to install UK TV in newly purchased properties – only to find it is not possible to install the huge dishes now required for the ultra weak signals we have in Murcia region. (At least we have UK satellite TV unlike those down the coast westwards past Lorca!) Was that the reason the house was sold ? If you are buying a property and TV is important to you get us to survey for a dish before you finally sign those documents ! Internet TV is now a reality – email us for details – and can usually be installed where a dish can not BUT decent internet is a necessity – and that is not always possible. Ask about TV before you buy ! Well that’s it for November – Alan at Rainbow Satellites sponsors this article – contact him for all things TV in Spain – rainbowsats@gmail. com or telephone (0034) 686 358 475. The website – www.rainbowsat. org has recently been updated and has all things TV in Spain on it – excellent info for the new house buyer in Murcia Spain.

News Q3 Home Resale Prices Softening

The average price of second hand housing in Spain stood at 1,647 euros per square metre in the third quarter of the year, which is 0.5% less than the previous quarter, and the lowest decline registered since the first quarter of 2010, according to a recent report by property portal, fotocasa. es. This quarterly decline contrasts with that experienced in the second quarter (-3.3%). The price of used housing has now accumulated 28 consecutive quarters of declines, although they are now easing. Head of research for fotocasa.es, Beatriz Toribio, said: “Every month the house price declines in Spain are slowing, and during the third quarter, the lowest drop in the past four years was recorded, a fact that explains the greater resistance of homeowners to lowering the prices further.” However, Toribio stressed that the adjustment is not over yet, as prices are continuing to decline, but at a slower pace and not equally in all regions, since there are some large cities where the prices have risen since the beginning of the year. Year-on-year, the price

of second hand homes fell by 6.5% in September which, according to the report, is one of the “softest” adjustments of the past five years. The accumulated decline in the prices of resale housing since their peak in April 2007 is 44.2% on average, with greater declines being registered in La Rioja (54.9%), Navarra (51%), and Aragón (49.9%). Europa Press reported that, in the third quarter of the year, prices fell in ten regions, especially in Navarra (-5.2%), Andalucía (-1.3%) and Cantabria (-1.2%), while six regions registered increases in their prices, led by Catalonia (+3.2%) and the Balearic Islands (+3%), and in Extremadura, the prices remained stable compared to the previous quarter. Dementia – signs and symptoms

Dementia often develops slowly and is not always obvious in the early stages. Symptoms similar to dementia can be seen in other illnesses. Sometimes it can be difficult to tell apart dementia from the usual mild forgetfulness seen in normal ageing. You should see your GP if you or your family and friends are worried about any changes in: • Memory • General mental functioning • Ability to carry out daily tasks • Personality Your GP will be able to either reassure you or, if necessary, refer you to a specialist. Diagnosing dementia early is important to allow you to get the right help and treatments and to plan for the future. Everyone with dementia will experience symptoms in their own way. Other types of dementia include Alzheimers, vascular dementia and dementia with Lewy’s bodies and frontotemporal dementia. Other signs and symptoms of types of dementia include: • Regularly forgetting recent events, names and faces.

of 80. Dementia is not a normal part of getting older or an acceleration of ageing. Dementia is caused by different diseases – most commonly by Alzheimer’s. We can’t change our age and there is currently no way we can completely prevent dementia, but research suggests there may be some simple things we can all do that might help lower our risk. A risk factor is anything that can increase your chance of developing dementia. Risk factors for cardiovascular disease (like heart disease and stroke) are also risk factors for all types of dementia. So it’s a good idea to keep healthy by: • exercising regularly • not smoking • achieving and maintaining a healthy weight • controlling high blood pressure • reducing your cholesterol level • controlling your blood glucose if you have diabetes •e ating a healthy, balanced diet with lots of fruit and vegetables and low amounts of saturated fat. Some studies suggest that enjoying an active life, with lots of interests and hobbies might be beneficial. Other researchers have found that spending more time in education is associated with a lower risk. It’s not yet known whether eating oily fish or taking B vitamins can reduce the risk of dementia as studies so far have had mixed results. It is not advised to take NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin or ibuprofen) or HRT (hormone replacement therapy) to protect against dementia, as research is continuing in this area. You should talk to your doctor before taking any supplements or drugs that claim to prevent dementia, as most are unproven and they can have serious side effects. You might read or hear about other risk factors for dementia. Despite occasional publicity, research has shown that meat, aluminium or living close to power lines are not risk factors for dementia. There is also no evidence that turmeric, gingko, ginseng, statins or coffee can protect against dementia. Source: Almeria Angels

Alzheimer’s, dementia with Lewy bodies and frontotemporal dementia are all neurodegenerative diseases. This means that the symptoms get worse over time. This is usually the case with vascular dementia too. The speed of change varies between people and also between different diseases, but in most dementias symptoms progress slowly over several years. Prevention Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia are complex. It’s becoming clear that they don’t have a single cause. It is likely that a mixture of our age, genes, environment and lifestyle contribute to whether we develop dementia. The risk of developing most dementias increases with age. That means as we get older, we are more likely to develop dementia. About one in 20 people over the age of 60 have dementia, but this rises to about one in five people over the age

braben’s blog...

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. I promised that I would install the new Flagship Operating System from Microsoft and give it a fair character assassination, sorry I meant to say assessment! Well, first things, first! I am using a technical evaluation product. This means that it is far from finished and might fall over at any time. At the end of this article I will tell you just how many times that it did stop. Installing the disk was exactly the same as installing Windows 8 /8.1! It tries to encourage you to use Microsoft’s browser and search engine (Bing) and like 8/8.1 doesn’t want you to login without a Hotmail or Outlook account. As I have an Outlook dump account, I used that. Note to self – make the password easier to remember!!! Another thing that I did like was the ability of the installation to put this on a separate drive and keep my beloved Windows XP. Both separate but completely installed. To write this article I downloaded and installed ‘LibreOffice’, as it is the free (as in speech) office suite that for me, rivals anything by Microsoft. The fact that I can tell you this means that it has succeeded! Let me repeat, this is an unfinished version of the product that you will be getting with your new computers in 8 – 10 months time and it is working, and working well! When I look at the screen what do I see? Well the Start Menu bar is back (yippee) with the now, familiar, Windows 8x logo on it. Click on it and you will see on the left side the familiar Windows 7 menu display that has made it a firm favourite now surpassing XP (even in my books). Still on the start menu but to the right side is the concession to windows 8 and their ridiculous ‘boxes’. Strangely, I like this configuration – it works for me! Changing the way the blocks appear and removing / replacing them, is surprising easy and works. Just like Windows 8.1’s Tiles, the ones on the task bar can be moved about and I’ve had quite a bit of fun the past half hour moving and resizing them, removing and replacing them and the most important thing is that, like Windows

8x, they can be ‘Live’. So, just to prove a point to myself, I set up the Live tile for the weather in Partaloa and now when I click on the ‘Start’ button the weather in Partaloa is displayed and says it is very sunny and warm (more yippee). One thing that you must remember is that these ‘Tiles’ are just ‘Apps’ – minimalistic front-ends to the working programs. Somewhere these programs must be running ALL THE TIME and that eats into your Processor’s Power, Working Memory and Ultimately – Your Time, constantly! You really didn’t think that Microsoft were going to get off that easily did you? On my cheap(ish) android phone I can turn off ‘Skype’, my ‘Email’ app, What’sapp and Viber and just have the phone as a phone (and maybe a book!). I would like to see the same options available to every one of you, of being able to ‘Turn Off’ any and all ‘Apps’ that you really want to keep, but only use when you what / need them! I hope, that as part of their extended development team, I will be able to point them in a direction that will make Windows OS something that everyone will actually want rather than loathe, which is the current view of their OS. And make it as flexible and robust as my beloved Linux. As they put it in their email “Together we will make this Windows the best Windows ever!” which will be an accomplishment after Windows Vista, 8 and 8.1. which, to be not too brutal, were lame ducks at best! By the way – During the writing of this article, which took a couple of hours, Windows 10 didn’t twitch, flinch or fail in any way. Now that is a product that might be worth buying!!!! Next week I will be starting a beginners course of articles from “Where is the damned power button” onwards, trying to dispel some of the myths and antiquated fears around computer’s and their uses. So until then, have a lovely week and if you need to see me you know where I am (see below). I’m now off to Jack’s Bar in Albox for my Friday afternoon computer clinic!

There’s a Humphrey about I remember getting my first bike aged 4; a red and blue machine with stabilisers. I grew out of it quickly but money was tight so I had to walk until my 8th birthday. My next one was bought second hand for £7. It was really heavy, had no gears and curious brakes that operated with metal bars instead of cables; I painted it bright blue. I remember dad teaching me to ride it in our back garden. Having a bike meant freedom; my mates and I had a large scale map of Guildford on which we proceeded to draw the boundaries of our imaginary kingdom each time we returned from a faraway adventure. We could be gone from early morning till dusk, parking our bikes in distant woodlands and playing ‘war’ or Hide N’ Seek. I don’t remember us ever taking sandwiches or drinks as we ran on fresh air. Sadly blue bike died when I attempted one wheelie too many. Not only did I bend the front forks but I slammed head first into a concrete wall and was

100 million dollars! Would you believe it? I’ll come back to that stupendous wodge of cash later…if I remember. We watched Apollo 13 at home the other day, you know, the one where they had a bit of a problem on board their spaceship to the Moon. In case you haven’t seen it, or weren’t around when it actually happened, I won’t spoil the end, but what’s with the film’s credits -they go on forever! I’m sure that there were more people involved in making Apollo 13 than were part of ground control on the original mission! What I don’t understand is, why filmmakers feel the need to list EVERYONE involved in making the film when, if the truth were told, we haven’t got a clue what the majority of the jobs mean. Most film crews have a Best Boy. What’s one of those? Then there’s the Grip, Key Grip and Dolly Grip. What the dickens could they possibly do that makes it so vital to tell us all who they are? But what these credits do reveal is, just why the toffee popcorn at the cinema is so expensive, we’re paying the, not insubstantial I’m sure, salaries of the various boys, grips, dollys and other mysterious technicians from the film industry. But they’re just the tip of the iceberg. Remember the 100 million dollars? That’s apparently how much it took to make the science fiction film “Gravity” starring George Clooney, Sandra Bullock and lots of broken space rockets. But, did you know, it cost India only seventy four million dollars to send their Mangalayaan spacecraft to Mars! Obviously, you can get to Mars without a Dolly Grip and it’s certainly cheaper without George Clooney onboard! Then there’s Sarah Brightman, who plans to pay a fair whack of money to blast off to the International Space Station next year and become the first professional singer to sing from space. Wasn’t it she who, along with the rest of Hot Gossip, had a hit with “I Lost My Heart to a Starship Trooper”? Well, as captain Kirk always said, space is the final front ear! He did say that didn’t he? And with that I’ll say goodbye, if there’s anyone still reading at this point. Thank you to anyone who has actually taken the time to read any of these bits of nonsense over the last few years. Have fun! Graham is married to Helen and has a daughter, Alice. He lives part of the year near Albox, but works in Qatar, teaching. If you wish to contact Graham regarding this article email: helenandg@yahoo.co.uk

rushed to casualty. The scar is still visible if/when I furrow my brow. My best mate Paul Cox and I used to earn a decent living helping the local Unigate milkman with his deliveries. Saturdays and holidays we would jump in the cab or perch on the back of the float at the beginning of his round and zoom off. The milkman smoked fags whilst he pootled along giving instructions to his two nimble assistants about what to leave at each doorstep. This was in the days of Corona (every bubble’s passed its fizzical) and we would each be rewarded by a litre bottle of whatever we fancied. Cream Soda was my preferred tipple in those days yet now my stomach churns at the thought of all the sugar and goodness knows what else that I glugged down. The prestige of the milkman reached a nadir in the 70s; Unigate discovered that the Humphreys were stealing people’s milk and came up with the

slogan ‘watch out watch out there’s a Humphrey about!’ Telly adverts starring Muhammed Ali, Sid James, Barbara Windsor and Rod Hull warned us kids about the milk snatchers that wanted our milk. We in turn went mad for the free red and white bendy straws, badges, stickers and other Humphrey paraphernalia we could lay our hands on. Being Unigate helpers of course put us first in line for the freebies. In 1970 Ernie was the fastest milkman in the west, Benny Hill wrote the song in 1955 as a tribute to his time as a milkman on a horse drawn cart in Eastleigh Hampshire. The lyric ‘he galloped into Market Street’ probably happened as the street exists. He performed the song on the Benny Hill Show; it was later released as a single becoming the 1971 Christmas number1 and stayed there

for 4 weeks. Two Ton Ted the bread delivery man was Ernie’s love rival for the widow Sue and they had a ‘wild west’ style shoot out with Ernie being killed by a combination of a well-aimed rock cake and stale pork pie. Ernie the milkman went to heaven where ferocious dogs are banned, Two Ton Ted married Sue but Ernie came back to haunt them on their honeymoon with the ghostly rattling of his milk bottles. Although I enjoyed delivering the white stuff, I stopped drinking milk at a young age. The dreaded ¼ pint bottle of free school milk did it for me as it was always warm and tasted horrid. In 1971 Margaret Thatcher God rest ‘er gained the nickname ‘milk snatcher’ for stopping free school milk for 7 to 11 year olds; for her kindness I will be forever in her debt!

Anchor Drops on Madrid Housing Prices

Iberian Funeral Plans: registered in Spain | Portugal |UK

According to a recent report from real estate intermediation company, Tecnocasa, based on purchases that they have brokered, property price reductions have come to an end, at least where second hand homes in the city of Madrid are concerned. They reported that the average price of second hand property in the city remained stable during the first half of 2014, and grew by just 0.56% compared with the same period of 2013 . This last almost negligible variation has brought the value per square metre of existing homes in the capital to 1,605 euros, which is well below the maximum price reached in the first part of 2007, when these properties reached a value of more than 4,000 euros per square metre. Their cumulative adjustment therefore, stands at around 59.92%. Tecnocasa reported that investors accounted for 33.27% of all the home purchases that were made in the capital between January and June and that, of this percentage, 87.28% paid for the transaction in cash. According to the intermediation company, these are mainly buyers acquiring property to rent out for a return on their investment. These property investors usually acquire cheaper properties than those purchased by regular home buyers looking for a primary residence. While the investor pays an average of 88,286 euros per property, the regular home buyer pays around 107,506 euros. This ratio is similar

with regard to the average size of the home, with the investor purchasing property with an average area of 56 square metres while the average size of property for the regular home buyer is around 65 square metres. Among the main considerations when purchasing an apartment is whether or not it has a lift. In the city of Madrid, the homes which have a lift are more expensive than those that do not have one, and in the first half of 2014 the prices for these properties stood at 1,856 euros per square metre and 1,314 euros per square metre, respectively. “If we analyse the difference between the two types in recent years, we can see that in the

Iberian where we help you plan for the inevitable The best laid plans should include an Iberian Funeral Plan, wherever you live in Spain or Portugal

periods where there was a greater demand for housing, the price difference was less, and that in the periods with less demand, then the properties without a lift depreciated at a greater rate (-66.48%) than those with one (-55.85%)”, Tecnocasa pointed out. The size of property stands out as another important factor in the market. Prior to the outbreak of the housing and financial crisis, the prices of apartments of less than 70 square metres (small apartments) were higher than the prices for larger properties (over 70 square metres). This has changed and now the larger apartments are priced higher than the smaller ones (1,728 euros per square metre compared to 1,563 euros). The condition of the property is another consideration for most buyers, says Tecnocasa. “In relation to the condition of the homes, comparing sales of those in good condition with those needing some renovation, we see that in the first half of 2014 the price per square metre of the apartments in good condition was 1,633 euros and for those in a poor condition it stood at 1,584 euros.” Finally, El Mundo reported that the age of the property in which the apartment is located is an important factor. According to the study, the apartments situated in buildings of less than 40 years old are priced at 420 euros on average higher than those found in blocks of more than four decades old. JAGUARS - Magical Mystery Tour Written by Eric Arnold

The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club in Spain tried something different this time, a Magical Mystery Tour. Members were only told that we would be travelling in convoy to an undisclosed location, where on arrival would check in to a hotel for one night and that something special would be arranged for the evening meal. Places were limited as the selected hotel only had 12 rooms. As you can probably guess the event was fully booked in just a few days. The event took place over the weekend of 18th & 19th October. Participants were asked to congregate at the Repsol petrol station in Sax at 11:30 Hrs on the Saturday. As is normal, the weather was fabulous, I was particularly grateful for this as the final destination was at a considerably higher altitude. Each car was given a sealed Emergency Pack, just in case anyone got lost. Lead by me, the convoy left at 11:30 sharp, up the A31 towards Madrid. Exiting the motorway at junction 136 towards Alpera and eventually Alcala del Jucar our final destination. This route to Alcala del Jucar is stunning visually but also a great road to drive. We arrived at Alcala del Jucar at 13:00 Hrs and parked the

cars behind the little hotel, aptly named Hostal Acala del Jucar. After checking in, participants were free to explore this beautiful location. Of particular note, is the weir and weir pond, the river, the lush vegetation and especially the Cuevas del Diablo, the caves of the devil. Lots to explore in this unusual place. That night, I had arranged a superb meal, something a little special, 5 starters, a choice of three main courses, a selection of desserts, wine, water, coffee and liqueurs. I am not going into detail as it would take to long - let’s just say it was a fabulous meal. We started at around 19:00 Hrs with drinks and people were still enjoying the evening some 8 hours later! Also a lovely surprise, we were treated to two short arias from Ms Lydia Hernandez, a professional opera singer and companion of our good friend Chris Fox, you can catch a sample of Lydia’s performance on http://youtu.be/qHXpqQ1LAuE As I said, only 12 rooms at the hotel, unfortunately one participant dropped out at the last minute due to illness so we only had ten cars but it did include some beauties, Chris Fox’s XK120, David Sleap’s absolutely stunning XKR Silverstone, David Shea’s XJS drop head. These do not detract from the other fabulous examples of Jaguar engineering, two lovely S types, two XJ8’s, a couple of X types and of course “the Guvnors” XK8 drop head. All just beautiful “motors” and a delight to see. I must admit they did look good all lined up in a row. Sunday morning, after breakfast, check out, then most people went there own way and explored more of this stunning part of hidden Spain. Our next meeting on 16th November meeting will also be something special, it will be held at Restaurant La Torreta, near Sax where a presentation will be given from Pellicer and Heredia, a renowned team of lawyers, about all things automobile, importation, re-registration, heritage registration etc etc. This unique event should not be missed as well as having the opportunity to sample the fabulous food that La Torreta provides e.g. the best steaks on the Costa Blanca. Book this one early; spaces will be limited.

week 4 No particular theme for this weeks show but I have to say a little disappointing for me as my top 5 didn’t perform as I thought they could have done. But I have to say the middle 5 are starting to make a move and I will follow these with interest. Opening this weeks show were Frankie Bridge and Kevin with a Cha Cha Cha. Disappointing this week, although she got the steps she had failed to grasp the principle of locking back the knee to gain a good strong hip action. Her weight was a little too far back which was the reason for the failure. She did however show good rhythm only to be expected from a singer. I gave her an 8 and the judges 32. Next to perform were Mark Wright and Karen with a Quickstep. His frame was quite good this week he just needs to watch certain steps which are making him tip forward from the waist instead of retaining the upright position. He did however manage to retain contact with his partner through most of the kicks and flicks, something which is quite tricky to achieve. I gave him 7 and the judges 29. Judy Murray and Anton then danced a Tango. Even though Judy is improving a little each week she was extremely stiff and looks as though none of her joints will bend. I find this quite incredible being she is a tennis coach. I gave her 5 and the judges 22. Simon Webb and Kristina then came out with a Charleston. This was the first Charleston this season which

By Lyn Aspden of ‘Strictly Dan ce’ Class Info 635584 431

showed good swivel in the feet and with excellent kicks, flicks and tricks gave an excellent characterisation of the dance. I gave him 9 and the judges what I considered to be a mean 31. Following were Alison Hammond and Aljaz with a Samba. You have to give it to this girl she absolutely oozes latin rhythm, albeit she is very flat footed still which mars her performances a little but she presented a real party atmosphere throughout her performance. I awarded her 7 and the judges 27. My favourite (NOT) next were Scott Mills and Joanne with an American Smooth - if you could call it that. If ever there was a lost case on a dance floor this was it! His face made him look like he was in pain - supposedly a romantic look?! I’m surprised he didn’t fall over his own twined toes were so bad, and his lifts looked so unsteady I was terrified he was going to drop Joanne as he staggered within the turns. I gave him a very generous 2 and the judges 15. Steve Backshall and Ola were next with a Salsa. There was a great opening to this number showing strong hips, shimmies and rhythm which unfortunately tightened up in hold on basic Salsa which was such a pity, in an otherwise very good performance with some superb lifts. I gave him 7 and the judges 27. Next out were Pixie Lott and Trent with a Rumba. Pixie showed a very good characterisation of the Rumba but again had failed to really grasp the

concept of the dance again failing to get the required foot pressure to give the knee action and hip movement required to really master this dance. However, she always captures the essence of the dance and this didn’t disappoint. I awarded her 9 and the judges 32. Following were Tim Wonnacott and Natalie with their Paso Doble. I am so sick of cape wafting in this dance and this left a lot to be desired. His posture was very hunched and the dance was far too soft to portray the strong characterisation needed. Again though Tina Turners’s Simply the Best does not spring to mind for a paso doble either and I feel the music has a huge impact of performance. I gave Tim 4 and the judges 19. Next to dance were Sunetra Sarker and Brendan with Salsa. Unfortunately after last weeks improvement, this wasn’t Sunetra’s dance. She was stiff, lacked the rhythm required for this dance, and her armography was tight and forced. She basically just went through the motions of the dance. I gave her 5 and the judges 27. Thom Evans and Iveta then came out to perform my favourite the Foxtrot. Thom is one of my middle runners and this week excelled. His posture had improved considerably and he is getting to grips with the acting side to truly characterise each of the dances. I awarded him 7 and the judges 30. Jake Wood and Janette then danced a Jive. His kicks and flicks were

extremely good but he still needs to be able to get onto his toes which would improve it even more, I found he was a little flat footed throughout. His posture also needed to come further forward from the waist to improve it more. That said Jake always delivers on performance and characterisation of his dance. I gave him 8 and the judges 33. Closing this weeks show were Caroline Flack and Pasha and a Quickstep. I like Caroline, but this week (and I blame Pasha), I found the choreography extremely repetitive. The runs at the beginning went the whole way around the floor before they did anything else, but Caroline obviously can’t do anything about this and it would be wrong of me to penalise her. She did also tire from about half way through and as a result her posture suffered a little. Again a bit disappointing for me and I awarded her 8 and the judges 33. With the judges having Jake and Caroline on top this week, I had Pixie and Simon on top and agreeing with Scott and Tim at the bottom, it was a great surprise to find Mark in the bottom 2 along with Tim. Despite Mark’s performance in the dance off not being the best he still did enough for a unanimous vote from the judges and lives to fight another week. Let’s hope that next week our top 5 will all be back on form. Until then, come along and join our classes to keep up with the gossip. In the meantime Keep Dancing!

DS BARBARIANS RFC

The newest rugby club on the Costa Blanca is starting training on Guardamar beach from 19.30 on Monday and Wednesday. Everyone is welcome to come along whether you have or do not have experience all are welcome. The decision to do this was made at the clubs first meeting on Friday night, until we manage to get a permanent ground to play and train on, on these nights, so if anybody can help with this please contacts us. The club is based on good old fashioned traditional ethics of the game of RESPECT and family values, socialising after the training and not just disappearing like with other clubs in the area. We will be having all ages training

from juniors through to vets and with qualified coaches. The aim of the club is to enter as many of the 7’s tournaments in the new year and get enough players to entertain touring teams that are coming over. Also hopefully enter the league next season. We have already been invited to play friendlies from local teams in the area, so a good start for the club. So looking forward to seeing plenty of people down at Guradamar beach on Monday night in front of the restaurants. For more information contact Saul on 634 042 913 or Dutch on 692 767 242 or come and see me at Zoco market on Sunday, third row in form the main road at the far end.

RBL POPPY LAUNCH

AN OCCASION TO REMEMBER RBL Spain District North The Poppy Appeal Spain 2014 was launched in traditional style in Torrevieja last week. A grand march led by the Orihuela Costa Pipes and Drums Band and Standard Bearers from many Costa Blanca branches of the Legion and followed by a multitude of poppy wearing supporters including two Chelsea Pensioners swept along the seafront. The march ended at the podium where dignitaries waited to address the crowd. Nigel Hails Chairman of the RBL in Spain, Vice - consul in Alicante Lloyd Milen, the Alcalde of Torrevieja Eduardo Dolon and Poppy Appeal coordinator Robin Hargrave each gave a speech reminding us of the importance of the Poppy Appeal in raising funds for the care and rehabilitation of todays young servicemen and women and the aid made available to the Legions beneficiaries. Chairman Hails read the moving poem “In Flanders Field” written so many years ago at the time of World War 1 the commencement of

which, Mr Hales reminded us, was 100 years ago this year. Alcalde Dolon spoke of the Launch as an opportunity to renew bonds of friendship with ex-patriate residents and of the poppy as symbol of hope and remembrance. Coordinator Robin Hargrave contributed to the occasion with a strong speech in which he thanked all volunteers and the public for their support for the Appeal which last year realised 172, 000 euros and informed us that the Royal British Legion spends 1.4 million pounds per week on those who need support. Sr. Dolon was presented with a certificate thanking the ayuntamiento for their support,by Nigel Hails as the pipers signified the final moments of the Launch. A very fitting presentation of the Launch orchestrated by District Ceremonial Officer Keith Carter and definitely an occasion to remember.

In 2012, Spain unveiled a new version of the tax law, and it was this interpretation that EU regulators rejected on Wednesday. With the decision, beneficiaries of the tax break “must repay the Spanish state,” the commission said in a statement, without naming the companies or amounts. “We are not in a position to give the amounts involved, and we await that information from the Spanish tax authorities,” said Antoine Colombani, a spokesman for Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia. Film review Song For Marion

“I’m not the life and soul of the party and full of joy and guts. I’m miserable old Arthur. I’ve ruined everything I had and it’s too late.” Arthur Harris played by British veteran actor Terence Stamp more akin to playing the arch villain is struggling to deal with his wife, Marion’s cancer. Undoubtedly he loves her, this is never in question being her main carer but to a point of over -protectiveness stifling her natural energy. His relationship with his son James is frosty. It seems as if James has proved a disappointment and Marion’s illness has caused a huge rift between them. Arthur is bad-tempered, the antithesis of his wife, Marion played by the renowned actress Vanessa Redgrave, held in such high-esteem by the American playwright Tennessee Williams as the greatest actress of our time. Within the partnership, she is the life force whereas Arthur represses his emotions, coming across as a misery dampening his wife’s enthusiasm for wanting to compete in a musical competition. “Maybe I’m crazy” and “Hey, did you happen to see the most beautiful girl in the world” or “Let’s talk about sex, baby” form part of the repertoire of the OAPzan unconventional type of choir chirpy and eccentric encouraged by a charismatic Elizabeth played by Gemma Arterton. The OAPz are precisely thatseniors wanting to sing and have

‘From ghoulies and ghosties and long-leggety beasties and things that go bump in the night, Good Lord deliver us’ is an ancient prayer attributed variously to being of Scottish or Cornish origin, each of course with close Celtic associations. There is in each of us, I suspect, a level of apprehension about such things, but to our Celtic ancestors there was very considerable fear, and the festival of Samhain (pronounced ‘sow-in’), which on the last day of October marked the end of summer and the start of the cold, dark winter, was a day when they believed the dead and other evil spirits came to cause trouble for the living. The Romans too had similar traditions, which after their conquest of Britain became assimilated and later ‘christianised’ in the festival of ‘All Saints Day’ (also known as ‘All Hallows’), which on November 1st is a time for celebrating the lives of all who have died in Christ. So, the day before All Saints, became known as ‘All Hallows Eve’, later shortened to ‘Halloween’. And here we go full circle as people nowadays celebrate with pumkin lanterns, dressing up as witches, spirits, ghosts, skeletons, etc., much as our pagan, Celtic ancestors might have done. So is it really all good clean fun? Or is there a risk that we may be dabbling in things we don’t understand? As a Christian I necessarily also believe in the reality of demons, so am wary of courting evil as so many seem to at Halloween. But far from being just another killjoy, spoiling other people’s fun I see October 31st as an opportunity for celebrating my certainty that Christ is able to defeat whatever the Devil may throw at me, for as St Paul wrote in his letter to Christians in Rome: “neither death, nor life; neither angels, nor demons, whether now or in the future; there’s no power either from above or from beneath, nor anything in all creation that can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” Details of a number of English Language Churches are given in Sol Noticeboard, for any wishing to Worship; whilst additionally, further information about the Anglican Church in this area may be seen on the website www.mojacarchurch.org Duncan Burr is Licensed Lay Reader for the Anglican Chaplaincy of Costa Almeria and Costa Cálida and may be contacted at djburr@avired.com

2 tbsp olive oil 1 large onion, chopped 1 garlic clove, crushed 600g of minced beef A small handful of mixed herbs 6-7 fresh vine tomatoes Salt and freshly ground black pepper A spoonful of sugar Tomato puree 2 beef oxo cubes A small glass of red wine Long spaghetti

Method

Heat the oil in a large, heavy-based saucepan. Add the onions and garlic, frying until softened. Increase the heat and add the minced beef. Fry it until it has browned, breaking down any chunks of meat with a wooden

spoon. Sprinkle the oxo cubes over the mince and stir so the colour and flavour spreads throughout the mince. Reduce the temperature and stir in the fresh vine tomatoes (leave these whole and squish when soft). Add the glass of red wine and season well with salt and pepper. Cover with a lid and simmer the bolognese sauce over a gentle heat for 1-1½ hours until it’s rich and thickened, stirring occasionally. At the end of the cooking time, add any extra seasoning if necessary. After tasting your sauce you may wish to add the sugar to reduce any acidity from the tomatoes. Remove from the heat to ‘settle’ while you cook the spaghetti in plenty of boiling water (for the time stated on the packet). Drain and divide between warmed plates. Season with parmesan cheese if you wish and then enjoy... Source: www.butchers-shop.com

animal corner Dogs are Boring, Cats are Common? If that is your attitude, then check out this list of Top 10 Peculiar Pets.

Perhaps you fancy a pet skunk, or maybe a cockroach? Believe it or not, there are many people who do call these unconventional creatures their pets. In descending list order, here goes: 10. Capybara. Related to the guinea pig, this native South American is the largest rodent in the world. Fully grown, the capybara is on average 4 feet (1.2 meters) long and usually weighs more than 100 pounds (45 kilograms). I think NO! 9. Stick Insect. Popular with children for years, because of its unique appearance and simple care needs. These intriguing insects abound in the Campo, and can live for several years

in the right conditions. They need tall enclosures, at least double the height of the insect, because they like to hang. They are omnivores and thrive on a diet of anything green, even lettuce. They don’t like being alone and need other stick insects for companionship. Their enclosures should be kept at room temperature and cleaned out weekly. They moult many times before they reach maturity and need enough room to literally climb out of their skin. OK – you can have one, but you can’t take it for walks. 8. Miniature Donkey. Shrek and Fiona might have accepted a donkey into their family in the movie, “Shrek,” but wasn’t that just a fairy tale? Not necessarily. The American Pet Products Association reports that more than 3 million people in the United States own equine animals, including miniature donkeys. Don’t let the name fool you: Miniature donkeys aren’t that small. They are about 3 feet tall (1.5 metres) and weigh between 200 and 350 pounds (90 and 158 kilograms) at maturity. Only for you if your neighbour are stone deaf – a donkey’s bray carries for over 1 kilometre, and a miniature donkey does not have a miniature bray! Also, they love the sound of their own voice, and will bray constantly, just because they can! 7. Hedgehogs. Few and far between, these useful little garden helpers are best off in the garden. If you encounter one in your garden, unless it is injured, leave it alone. Put out some cat food and a very shallow saucer of milk, if you are lucky it might stay. 6. Pygmy Goat. Fine, if you have a fenced garden, and don’t mind

them eating absolutely everything that is growing in it! Though for entertainment value, they are top of the list! It’s up to you, but think carefully! 5 Potbellied Pig. Great for turning the garden over. They can be housetrained, and are very intelligent, some say more so than a dog. However, they don’t retrieve sticks! Are you sure? The cute tiny piglet is going to grow into a stonking great pig, and they are very heavy! If you are certain, well, maybe? 4. Sugar Gliders. These are part of the possum family, and are quickly becoming one of America’s favourite peculiar pet species. They are native to Australia and get their name because of a special membrane that extends from the front leg to the hind leg, allowing them to glide from tree to tree. The average fullgrown glider will weigh only about 3 ounces (85 grams) and reach around 7 inches (17 centimeters) in length. I think NO 3 Wallaby. If you can find one. But not really. 2. Skunk. NO! 1. Madagascar Hissing Cockroach Absolutely Not! I know it doesn’t bite or sting, but no! What about a nice Burmese water python instead? They are very pretty. If you are intent on having a peculiar pet, then go to Animal Planet for ideas, and care tips.

New 2015 Chevrolet Camaro: exclusive images... The new Chevrolet Camaro muscle car has the Ford Mustang in its sights and we’ve got the pics to prove it The first Ford Mustang to be sold officially in the UK in right-handdrive form may have some serious competition if the latest spy shots are to be believed. Chevrolet is readying a new version of its own muscle car – the Camaro and our exclusive images reveal how the 2015 Chevrolet Camaro could look. Our spies captured the camouflaged Camaro being tested at the Nurburgring and it’s clear to see that the American firm is sticking closely to the coke-bottling styling and retro looks of the current car. Our exclusive rendering of the new Camaro, meanwhile, shows how the finished car could look, demonstratoing that while some of the distinctive creases of the present model will be softened, the car’s traditional menacing look will be aided with new headlights and a slim grille, emphasising visual width and giving the new Camaro greater presence on the road. The spy shots show a test mule with four tailpipes hinting at V8 power for the new version, but it’s also likely that Chevrolet will offer a more economical four-cylinder Camaro just like Ford is doing with the Mustang. It’s also expected that the new Camaro will be heading to the UK too. Despite General Motors axing the American brand late last year due to poor sales, Chevrolet has said that only “halo” models will make their way to these shores – cars like the Corvette and

Camaro. But don’t expect any right-hand drive variants – the new two-door coupe will be a left-hooker only. Prices aren’t confirmed but expect only a small increase over the current Camaro, which is priced at £35,345 for the Coupe and £40,345 for the Convertible. By comparison, the new four-cylinder EcoBoost Mustang is expected to cost from around £30,000. It’s likely the new Camaro will gets its public debut at the Detroit Motor Show in January 2015 or the New York Show two months later. Read more: www.autoexpress.co.uk

SOLTIMES october 2014

www.soltimes.com

Quite some time ago our swimming pool pump died, and was ejected from its pump house and replaced without ceremony. It was then left on the ground at the back of the house, waiting to be ‘got rid of.’ It remained on the gravel, easier to ignore than to deal with, but it had to be removed from our premises eventually; the only question was How? That was easy – the ever faithful Andy deposited it in the back of Del. This gave rise to the next question – Where? Not in the bin – not suitable. Not beside the bin – unsightly. Not beside somebody else’s bin – cheating, and very unneighbourly! Ah! Of course! The Arboleas Rag-and-Bone Family! (Probably more politically correctly termed The Arboleas Consortium for Recycled Materials). Arriving in Arboleas with my weighty load, I was unable to park conveniently close, but I did my best, and hoped that a stalwart family member, of whom there are several, would lift the darn thing out for me once he had seen and appreciated the size of the largesse I was offering. Stalwart

By Jos Biggs

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk

family members of the male variety were nowhere to be seen, but Grandma spotted me as I drew up, and rose to the challenge. I opened the boot and stood beside it looking tall, blond and English while Grandma waddled towards me looking short, wide and extremely swarthy. ‘Keh?’ she enquired, in a hopeful tone of voice. I began to explain that I had a defunct pump in my car, and wondered if she would like it para el reciclaje? She gazed at the pump as though it were worth a million dollars, then looked up at me. Although having all the grace in motion of an elephant seal in a supermarket, her expression displayed strength of character and practical intelligence, proving that you don’t get to be in the Consortium for Recycled Materials without knowing a thing or two. Her face melted into a beaming smile. ‘Sí, gracia.’ ‘It’s heavy, I’ll help you lift it.’ I flustered in Spanish, but before I’d got to pesada she had reached one brawny brown arm into the boot, grabbed the pump by its throat, and lifted it effortlessly out. With another beatific smile she lumbered off, gracia-ing away as she went, still carrying the million dollar pump in one hand as though it were no heavier than a loaf of bread. Remind me never, ever to attempt to arm wrestle with her!

Don’t Drink The Water It never ceases to amaze me what I read in the papers these days, and even more so the internet. Then again, the internet is a never ending black hole, which somehow has to be filled . . . with something, anything, needed to satisfy the voracious appetite of the constantly scrolling page. I was warned last week to, ‘Beware guys, we are entering the Cuffing Season.’ And there was I thinking it was just your bog standard weatherturns-to-rubbish autumnal season we were entering. But no. It’s more than that. As well as being a key dating season it’s also - apparently - a time when men and women race against time to find a partner to snuggle up with on cold winter nights. Ah, cuffing as in hand cuffing, it took me a while to work out, but I got there. The article explained now’s about the time I need to find someone if I want to guarantee a Christmas present, and line up my Valentine’s Day spending spree. Then, of course, after that we can go our separate ways ready for a carefree, sociable summer when it doesn’t feel so bad to be single. It all sounds so easy and matter of fact. To add weight to an already weighty piece of writing, the author pronounced, ‘it’s all the rage in the US.’ Well, if I’d been sceptical before, then that phrase convinced me – no thanks! In fact the whole article got right up my nose, which leads me nicely on to my next fascinating read. Have you blown your nose recently, or better still, had a look up it? Best

to try before you go to bed tonight, because you may have something lurking up there, in the dark recesses of your nasal cavity. A bit like the British backpacker who on her return home to Scotland, discovered she had a leach living in her nose, I kid you not, a leach. Alright, maybe I could understand a tiny, weenie, snotty little leach getting away with free board and lodging for a while, but a three inch monster. How would you breathe on that side for a start, wouldn’t your nose feel ‘different.’ She said she’d started to get nose bleeds three weeks before she came home, but put them down to a riding accident injury to her nose. When she got home, she started to notice something hanging from her nose, but dismissed it as congealed blood – as you do. I’d have been tempted to wonder how congealed blood can wriggle, but no matter. Then one morning about a month later, ‘Curly,’ as she subsequently christened her nasal guest, put in an appearance, ‘He almost touched my chin,’ she said. A friend took her to hospital where doctors, after quite a lot of pulling, managed to free the beast from his cosy home. He now lives in a sample bottle on her bedside table. Doctors said she had probably picked it up via the water in Asia, it had moved to her nose and grown. What a hoot. By Paul Martin

alqueria

35

viewpoint The Gods of Alqueria

José García is privy to an age old secret. He is a conduit to the Gods of Alqueria. If anyone took the trouble to research his ancestry they would find that García’s is the oldest lineage in Alqueria. His forbears arrived long before the Hill People, even before a single house was constructed in the Village. His blood line can be traced to before the fall of Carthage, some 250 years before. It is during the reign of the Pharaoh Darius I that one must look for José’s earliest known ancestors. For during the rule of this rather nondescript monarch occurred the incident which is of importance to our research. Among the Pharaoh’s many artisans was one Imontop. Imontop was concubine grader to the Pharaoh as had his Father been and his Father before him. Although he enjoyed the work he found it somewhat frustrating and this was to be his downfall. Imontop was caught illegally test driving a concubine. He was duly exiled to the strange land across the water where the ‘green mist falls and the stale pong rises’. He was sent to what was to become Alqueria. Imontop, along with a group of fellow exiles soon established a rudimentary society complete with its very own Alquerian deity the Astral Goddess Opabord. Opabord’s glyph is resplendent in a cow-

horn crown. In her right hand she holds what looks suspiciously like a Remitroot plant and in her left hand, well let’s just say Manuela would be proud of her. Over the centuries as the Iberian continent endured invasion after invasion religions ebbed and flowed as did religious tolerance. Imontop and his successors were compelled to keep their deity and faith a secret for fear of persecution. As the deity of the Astral Goddess Opabord was driven underground so it became insular and therefore survived virtually unchanged to the present day. The deity may have survived but the same can not be said about the faithful. The high priest and channel to the Goddess, José García is his own and only disciple. Followers have fallen by the wayside over the years as the Goddess has failed time and time again to deliver on the prayers and offerings tendered in her name. García was also losing confidence. With all the ills that have befallen Alqueria over the years one would have expected at least one success from the Goddess Opabord. José García began to examine the very fundamental foundations of his faith, even questioning the very existence of the Goddess herself. Perhaps the answer is a simple one however. The job may just be too big for Opabord. It may need a more powerful deity. Alqueria and its problems are not for the faint hearted, even the Gods find the going tough.

Leading Removal Company reports on strengthening housing market One of Spain’s top removal companies has reported that they experienced a resurgence in the Spanish housing market during 2013 and it looks like 2014 will be an even busier year. Mat Ford-Dunn, the Managing Director of ‘Advance Moves International Removals’ pointed to the fact that many property values in Spain have now fallen to a much more realistic level and this has definitely resulted in increased house sales. This has been noticed in all regions of Spain as Advance Moves operate their relocation services throughout the mainland. Advance Moves has its main warehouse in Murcia, Spain, with an additional warehouse in Kent in the UK and has had to purchase 5 new vans and trucks to cope with the increased demand over the past year. The UK housing market is also in a state of recovery and increased house sales have resulted in more people selling up and looking to buy in Spain. There are many factors that

tempt expats to Spain, not least the recent periods of turbulent weather, which many parts of the UK have suffered. On the flip side, for economic reasons many British Expats are now able to sell properties in Spain and Advance Moves are often the first choice when it comes to repatriating them back to the UK. Mat was also keen to point out that the increase in demand for their removal services was also down to the level of service and expertise that Advance moves offer to their clients and the fact that many clients had already seen the brightly liveried vehicles on the roads undertaking their removal services. Advance moves is also a member of the British Association of Removers and one of only a few companies that export wrap furniture to provide extra protection for international removals. ‘Our clients know that they are getting a more competitively priced, premium removal service, when compared to the rest of the market. The increased volume of removals enables Advance Moves to offer their clients a more regular and flexible timetable for their individual removal requirements’ Mat sees the trend continuing throughout 2014 with the housing market in the UK and Spain continuing to make steady process. Advance Moves are gearing up for another busy year.

Nilam has notched up a first for the group by being the first female winner of The Shoestring Challenge Trophy. The Boats were started at staggered intervals calculated from their handicaps, slowest away first, fastest last. First over the finish line in 1hr 29mins was UNO with Nilam on the helm and her crew ‘Little John’ Down and Kath Roper. A close second, 2 mins behind, were Brian and Andy. Third 4 mins behind the leaders ‘Stormin’ Norman Venner and Val. Finally a close fourth, 6 mins behind the winners, Big Jack and Manchester Lol in Quatro. The Shoestring Group is a dinghy sailing group, one of the varied ‘boat share’ groups in the Sailing Association Mar Menor. For more information go to www.sailingmarmenor. com

MATCH REPORT SATURDAY, 18TH OCTOBER 2014 Jacarilla 2 v. Daya Nueva 4 Cadetes, Alicante 2a

Miss after Miss but the points are all Daya’s The first game of the new season sees Daya with no home pitch until the New Year. It has been a long time coming but work has started on replacing the sand and gravel surface with a synthetic artificial grass type. So for a few months perhaps we should call them the Daya Nomads. It was all Daya from the start and Marcos had a good chance within the first minute to open the scoring. Chance after chance went begging for the visitors, then on 10 minutes from yet another Daya attack Hugo blasted home from close range to open the scoring for the visitors. Daya continued to miss many easy chances, could they be in danger of paying dearly for all these misses ? As the half wore on Daya continued to clock up many many more easy chances missed ! The posts and the bar did come to Jacarilla’s rescue a few times but mainly it was amazingly poor finishing accounting for Daya not being 5 or even 6 goals up. On 35 minutes Hugo made it 2 - 0 with a neat headed goal from a corner to make it a more respectable scoreline at half time and probably ending any hope the home side had of getting anything from the game. The second half began with yet another good chance missed by the visitors, then on 43 minutes the unthinkable happened, Jacarilla scored, on the first occasion they had been in the Daya penalty area ! So now what would happen ? Would Daya start scoring from their

continuing chances or could Jacarilla raise their own game ? The answer was yes when a high speculative lob left Danni in the Daya goal stranded for a 2 - 2 scoreline on 65 minutes. Just a minute later though it was 3 - 2 Daya when Jose Gregorio scrambled the ball over the goal line. The home side were still pushing forward and on 75 minutes from a fierce free kick Danni made a fabulous stop to keep the visitors in front. In the final few minutes Daya were denied a certain penalty when Carlos was bowled over in the area. Mind you given the way Daya were shooting today they would almost certainly have missed. On the stroke of full time Marcos had the easiest of chances when the keeper presented him with a wide open goal that even Marcos couldn’t and didn’t miss. So 4 - 2 final score. I have never seen such a one sided game especially in the first half, Daya could and should have doubled their goal tally. Jacarilla took their two chances well and made a much better game of it in the second half. The referee did not have to run about a lot he just had to stand in the home side’s half because that is where 90% of the play was. It was a good spirited game but oh those many many missed chances. Still it is 3 points away from home so well done Daya. Man of the match, all of us who had to sit through those squandered chances. Daya Dave Team Sponsor: Segurlab

C D JUVENIA 1 MAZARRON FC 2 Mazarron defied all the odds with two goals in the last five minutes to win a game in which they had been reduced to nine men following the sendings off of Chema and Lorca. The first half was a fairly drab affair with neither side able to impose any authority on the game although Tolo once burst through only to push the ball a little too far forward allowing the Juvenia keeper to run out and gather it safely. Then, after 38 minutes a break down the right wing involving three Mazarron players, found Tolo in a good position but with just too much of an angle to get a good shot away, and the ball ended up in the side netting – when a few of the visiting supporters thought it had gone in. Apart from a couple of scares, both involving Mazarron keeper Conejo, Juvenia were unable to muster any real efforts in a disappointing first half which ended goalless. The second half did not start any better with both teams again seeming woefully short of attacking ideas although Diego contrived to balloon the ball over the bar after 52 minutes when a Mazarron free kick was only half cleared by the Juvenia defence. Mazarron were now coming more and more into the game and a shot from Tolo after 60 minutes seemed to hit the arm of a Juvenia defender, only for the

referee to award a corner rather than a penalty kick. However, five minutes later Juvenia took the lead after been awarded a free kick 25 metres from goal. Javier’s free kick nestled in the back of the net before Mazarron keeper Conejo had chance to move. Chema replaced Liders for Mazarron and within two minutes had received a yellow card for an over enthusiatic challenge. To make matters worse he received a second yellow card a few minutes later after remonstrating with a linesman leaving Mazarron reduced to ten men. Within five minutes Lorca had joined Chema for an early bath after receiving his second yellow card and Mazarron’s position now seemed hopeless. However, their fighting spirit was never more evident and they spend the last 10 minutes of the game bombarding the Juvenia goal and were rewarded by two goals from Diego in the 85th and 89th minutes to earn a famous victory and keep Mazarron in fifth place in the league. Team: Conejo, Lorca, Dani, Antonio Jose, Enrique (Said), Diego (Israel), Tolo, Manu, Andreo, Liders (Chema), Mateo Man of the Match: Enrique

MAZARRON FC 2 A.D. PLIEGO 2

In a game they were expected to win comfortably, Mazarron had to overcome a two-goal half time deficit to fight back in the second half and eventually equalise with two Tolo penalties. The first half saw Mazarron relying on the through ball to Tolo while Pliego attacked in numbers with sometimes three or four forwards in support, Tolo had Mazarron’s best early chance with a left foot shot wide of the post but, at the other end, Conejo had to be at his best on two occasions to keep out the Pliego attack. Pliego took the lead after 30 minutes when a corner was cleared by the Mazarron defence but only as far as the Pliego No 21 whose shot looped over Conejo and into the Mazarron net. Worse was to follow two minutes later when a Pliego left

wing cross escaped all the defenders and was turned it at the far post to make it 2-0. Mazarron’s hopes seemed to have disappeared totally when captain Alfonso was sent off in the 44th minute having received two yellow cards in as many minutes. However, two penalties were awarded to Mazarron in the first few minutes of the second half and both were successfully despatched by leading scorer Tolo, taking his tally to six for the season so far. There should have been a third penalty for Mazarron when a Pliego defender clearly handled in the penalty area but perhaps the referee had had enough controversy for the day!!! Despite being down to ten man it was Mazarron who continued to push forward and shots from Tolo, Diego and Enrique went wide of the Pliego goal. At the other end Pliego’s few attacks were comfortably dealt with by the Mazarron defence. Team: Conejo, Lorca, Dani, Antonio Jose, Said (Chema), Enrique, Alfonso, Israel (Manu), Diego (Mateo), Tolo (Javi), Liders Man of the Match: Tolo

FONT DEL LLOP GOLF 17TH OCTOBER 2014 Here we are back again at Font del Llop. As we made our way into the Club House there was water being poured out on the greens and fairways, this made the course very wet and muddy. Nevertheless the greens were in excellent condition and holding. This made putting that bit easier. This is a very exacting thinking course and although the putting was easier tee to green was still difficult. As we only had 14 players this month we were finished by half past three so we made our way back to the Club House for the presentation and the usual excellent meal provided by Chris and his staff.
