Humanists of Murcia Monthly Walk The original walk that was led by (nice) Pedro up and around the mountains of Morata, was deemed to difficult by Jon, having spent an hour looking for the start and then being warned off by a young ranger. So 18 walkers met at Restaurante Casa Colora and drove to Coto Fortuna by the defunct Bar Hnos Montiel. A good track led us up the west side of the hill to a picnic area. The track then went right round to a unfenced mine shaft where a woman from Aguilas area frightened Richard by walking around the edge of a very deep shaft, when the walk was done five years ago. Back to the cars after a slow return amble

(andar sin priza!!) and off to Restaurante Los Cazadores (The Hunters). It was a good meal (no misfits to cater for) and into the Spring Equinox Personality Tests devised by Alfred Russel Wallace and Charles Darwin. Most people enjoyed the tests after several were reluctant to get involved (What were they trying to hide in their personality?). Jon’s pig drawing was at the top of the page, facing right and had few details, 4 legs, big ears and, of course, a very, very, very long tail. The last walk of the season will be on Saturday, 30 May 2015. More information on the Humanists can be found on www. bolnuevo.com, click on Humanists.

How a tiny Castellón village became Spain’s street art capital

Around a decade ago, the children of Fanzara, a village of 320 inhabitants in the mountainous interior of Castellón province in eastern Spain, used to play at staging protests. This was back when residents were mounting frequent demonstrations against a project to install a toxic waste incinerator here. “That experience taught us that when we put our minds to something, we can bring people round,” say Javier López and Rafa Gascó, who led the marches against the waste plant, and have now channeled their energies into a new initiative that has changed the face of this remote community. We never imagined it would reach the point where we’re living in a huge open-air art gallery” The pair have convinced the mainly elderly residents of Fanzara to allow graffiti artists to cover the walls of the village with street art. “We thought that with a bit of luck, one or two urban artists would come and paint a mural, but we never imagined it would reach the point where we’re living in a huge open-air art gallery,” says Javier. Last September, 23 leading Spanish street artists, including names such as Deih, Hombrelópez, Susie Hammer, and Julieta Xlf, descended on Fanzara for four days, leaving behind 44 murals in what they have dubbed the MIAU, or Museo Inacabado de Arte Urbano (Unfinished Museum of Urban Art). “They’re probably not really aware of how important what they’ve done is,” says Belén García, a specialist in street art at the University of Valencia, about the residents of Fanzara. “This is unique, because it comes out of a social movement that has nothing to do with other forms of street art or post-graffiti, as these kind of murals are called. “This is different to what is going on in cities like Valencia, where artists paint in public spaces without permission,” she adds. It is also different to when municipal authorities decide to pay artists to decorate the walls of a run-down area: “This was born out of a residents’ movement and with no funding.” That said, Fanzara’s local council threw itself behind the initiative, contributing €2,000 to the four-day paintfest. The rest of the costs were covered by the artists themselves, who raised money online and by selling merchandising to visitors at the event. Fanzara town hall contacted the Mur-murs street artists collective, which soon found more than 20 people interested in taking part. After the artists had finished, a number of residents asked them to decorate their own houses. Word of the event soon spread internationally through the social networks, and a group of Italian artists traveled to Fanzara, contributing three more works to this ongoing project. “In a couple of years, Fanzara will be known internationally, in fact I think it already is,” says Joan Feliu, an art historian at Jaume I University in Castellón. Belen García says the village is already the subject of study in academic circles. Fanzara is now preparing for a second sitting, which will take place over four days starting on July 16. “And if we run out of walls, we’ll just paint over and start again,” says Javier.

LEGAL CORNER

WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com www.daviessolicitors.com

Q. A solicitor spoke the other day on television about the new directive 650/2012 explaining that is was essential that people retired in a country different of their country of nationality within the European Union revise their wills. What is all this about? A. This regulation of the EU 650/2012 deals with different things, but the reason English citizens need to look at their will is that this new Regulation of the EU establishes that: When a person dies resident in one country of the European Union but national of another, the law applicable to his inheritance will be the one that he/she has established expressly in his will and not the one established by the International Norms of each country (which may be in conflict). This is good news because an English national living in Spain can establish that he/she wishes English Law to rule his/ her inheritance and this will avoid any possible risk of claims from children against the spouse on the basis of the system of obligatory heirs established in Spanish law, which has always caused worry and concern in the case of children from different marriages etc. If a person passes away after the 17th of August of 2015, unless he has said differently on his will the legislation applicable to his inheritance will be that of his country of last residence. This is very important for English people living in Spain, because under Spanish law you cannot leave everything to your wife as 2/3 of the estate have to be left to children. In other words if you are

resident of Spain, have children and do not establish on your will that you wish English Law (your national law ) to rule your inheritance your Spouse will not be allowed to receive his/her full inheritance as it would contradict the Spanish rules of obligatory heirs which would be applicable automatically because of the new regulation. Consequences: 1. If you have children but have made a will leaving all assets to your spouse, make sure that you have clearly stated on your will that you wish your national law (English law) to rule your inheritance. If you have not, then you need to speak to a solicitor about this new European directive and add this statement to your will. 2.If you are married and you have been concerned with possible claims by your spouses children against your estate this risk can be completely removed by your spouse stating on her/his will that it should be English law that rules the inheritance. Conclusion: The new regulation has given much more strength to the testators /testatrix, letting them choose between English or Spanish Law, which is good, but precaution is a must because under the new regulation if nothing is said and you are a resident in Spain automatically the law applicable will be Spanish law which does not permit that spouses leave everything to each other if there are children. To avoid nasty surprises visit your solicitor and ask if you need to change the wording of your will due to the new Regulation of the EU. 650/2012.

Ricci heiress convicted of tax fraud

The heir to the Nina Ricci perfume and fashion fortune has been convicted of tax fraud by a Paris court after hiding millions in an offshore HSBC account. Arlette Ricci, 73, was sentenced to a year in prison and ordered to pay a €1 million (£720,000;$1.1m) fine. The court also confiscated two properties worth four million euros (£2.9m;$4.2m). HSBC’s Swiss private banking arm is being investigated after a leak revealed large scale tax fraud. Ms Ricci, who can appeal, was given a two-year suspended sentence on top of her one-year custodial sentence. Her daughter, Margot Vignat, 51, was also convicted and given an eight-month suspended sentence. Ms Ricci was accused of hiding millions of euros from the French authorities to evade tax using an offshore HSBC account. She was ordered by the court to pay millions in back taxes for the period of 2007-2009, with the exact amount to be set at a later date. Ms Ricci was the first of around 50 French nationals to face trial over tax evasion in the HSBC case.

Her prosecution was seen as a test case for the so-called “Swissleaks” scandal. A list of thousands of HSBC’s clients was passed to the French government in 2009 by whistleblower Herve Falciani, a former employee of the bank’s private operation in Switzerland. The bank’s tax-evasion practices were reported in February by the BBC’s Panorama programme and a host of other international media outlets, leading to criminal investigations in the US, France, Belgium and Argentina but not in the UK, where HSBC is based. The UK’s HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) was given the leaked data in 2010 and identified 1,100 people from the list of 7,000 British clients who had not paid their taxes. But almost five years later, only one tax evader has been prosecuted. In February, HSBC Group Chief Executive Stuart Gulliver admitted “unacceptable” practices had taken place at its Swiss arm. Nina Ricci was born Maria Adelaide Nielli in Turin in 1883, before settling in France aged 12 and founding the Nina Ricci business with her son in

If humans were like salamanders, that careless carpenter down the street would have a full set of fingers. But soon after our primordial ancestors slithered out of the muck, limb regenesis was chucked out of our genetic portfolio like John Bobbitt's . . . well, you get the picture. The good news: Our bodies still retain some important repair mechanisms. "Regeneration is actually a default state when we're embryos," says David L. Stocum, Ph.D., a regenesis researcher and dean of the school of science at Indiana University-Purdue

University in Indianapolis. "We gradually lose that ability as we develop—except in certain kinds of tissues."The holdouts? Your arteries, skin, liver, lungs, and digestive tract, and certain parts of your brain. They're all continually refreshed—if you're healthy. "It's called maintenance regeneration. It's kind of like working on your car," says Stocum. "You've got something going on—you're low on oil, you buy a quart. A taillight goes out, you replace it. The clutch is acting up, you fix it. It's

the same thing with your body." (A few parts—including the liver and severed bits of fingertips—can even grow back. Studies suggest that adult stem cells in those areas play a role.) Make sure your body has all the tools and parts it needs for a tune-up.

How To Get Healthy, Pretty Summer Feet It's time to expose your toes! To help get your tootsies looking and feeling summer-ready, here are some easy ways to pamper your feet. When we were stuffing our feet into boots and socks all winter, going sans-pedicure was no biggie. (Who was looking, anyway?) We didn’t have to worry about strappy sandals giving us blisters, and since we definitely weren’t waking around barefoot with snow on the ground, calluses and splinters were the least of our worries. But summertime means lots of outdoor activities and

open-toed shoes. And let’s face it -neglected feet and unkempt toes are not a pretty sight. To help get your tootsies looking and feeling summer-ready, here are 10 easy ways to pamper your own feet: 1. You don’t need to blow tons of money on salon pedicures. It’s easy to get your feet summer-ready with a safe, at-home pedi. First, soak your feet in lukewarm water to soften your nails. Dig any dirt out from under your nails with an orange stick. Then clip your nails straight across before filing. Don’t cut into the corners of your nails, and don’t clip them too short -- that can cause ingrown nails. And never, ever cut your cuticles! They help keep germs away from your skin and nails. When you’re ready for polish, don’t forget to use a base coat to prevent yellowing and a top coat after to help your pedi last longer. Bold Polish Colors Sure, red or pink polish on your toes looks lovely, but why not have some fun and switch to a bolder color? Funky hues are in for summer 2011. So go ahead -- opt for a polish in a vibrant coral, turquoise or even purple and you’ll be sure to have the trendiest toes on the boat dock. A Quick Fix Don’t you hate it when you spent time giving yourself a pedicure, and the second you step on the beach the sand wears down the shine? Don’t worry -- we’re definitely not suggesting you skip your weekend beach trips at the

expense of your pedi. Just swipe a layer of clear coat on over your color after you shower and dry off. Your polish will go from matte to shiny again in no time! Foot Rub Those new yellow wedges look stunning with your sundress, but by the end of the day, your feet are asking you, “why do you torture us so?!” Show them some love by giving yourself a foot rub -- all you need is a golf or tennis ball. Sit in a chair and rub the ball from your heel up to your toes, spending extra time massaging the tenser areas. Take deep breaths while you roll to help oxygenate and relax your muscles. Then switch to the other foot. Chill Out When the weather is hot and humid, you know how you have to fight to pull your rings off your swollen fingers? Well guess what -- you’re feet do the exact same thing in the summer heat. And all of those fun, seasonal activities like outdoor jogs, hikes and sidewalk sales are bound to aggravate and inflame your feet even more. To bring the swelling down after a long, hot day, soak your feet in a tub of ice water for 15 minutes. Then pat dry with a towel.

Laos part 1

Laos is a landlocked country squeezed between China, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia; it has a small population of about seven million yet it’s almost the same size as the UK. A 50,000 year old skull was found recently; the oldest proof of a modern day human in South East Asia. Proof of an agricultural society dates from over 6000 years ago. 4000 year old bronze tools and iron artefacts dating from 3000 years ago have been found. Laos came together as a nation around the Fourteenth Century when the kingdom had the beautiful name of Million Elephants or Lan Xang. The country expanded to its present borders in the 1600s. King Sourigna Vongsa started with 2 sons, but as intrigue is the norm with royalty; one was executed for adultery, the other fled the country after being caught in bed with his half sister and sentenced to death. The King died in1694 without an heir and the country split into three parts. Thus weakened; the north was invaded by the Burmese and the south by Siam (Thailand). As late as 1874 the Siamese conducted cross border slave hunting raids. A few years later the Chinese bandit army the Black Flags

invaded. In 1893 France rescued King Oun Kham and added Laos to its Indochina protectorate. The three areas were reunited and Laos was safe again. France left Laos relatively untouched using it as a buffer between British occupied Thailand and its own lands. The French did however enact a law making all adult males do 10 days manual labour a year for them. During WWII Laos was occupied in turn by six different countries, briefly after the Chinese left in March 1945 it became independent. Then a month later the Japanese invaded. At the end of the war in 1946 the French reoccupied the country until 1953 when France lost the first Indochina war. With the Geneva peace accord signed in 1954’ Laos was again an independent monarchy and America started to financially support the Royal Lao Army against the communist Pathet Lao guerrillas. President Ho Chi Minh of North Vietnam had agreed in 1954 not to interfere in Laos but secretly aided the Pathet Lao. From 1958; Soviet backed North Vietnam (NVA) conducted secret night time border attacks, then quickly withdraw leaving the Pathet

Lao to control the new territory. This terrified the Royal Laos army and whole units deserted rather than face the ghostly attacks. The NVA then controlled large parts of Laos which they needed to construct the now legendary Ho Chi Minh Trail. This huge project would later enable munitions, fuel, supplies and manpower to travel south from Hanoi once hostilities commenced a few years later. The American Govt department the NSA later called the trail the greatest ever military construction programme of the 20th Century. By 1968 the Royal Laos army had disappeared and the Americans started recruiting the Hmong Tribe as their secret army against the NVA. Trying to destroy the Ho Chi Minh Trail; American planes dropped an average of a bomb load every eight minutes on Laos from 1964-73. That’s nine years at $23 million a day. More bombs were dropped on Laos than were used in the whole of WWII. Since then America has donated $53 million towards bomb clearance. After the Vietnam War finished in

1973 the Hmong tribe helped the CIA defend the Royalist Government. Then in 1975 when the communists took over; the Hmong found themselves attacked in retribution by both the new Laos rulers and the Vietnamese. Hundreds of thousands fled to Thailand to live in refugee camps. In 1989 Laos agreed to repatriate some of them but most refuse to return. Those that have often disappear. Hillary Clinton’s husband when President back in 1995 refused to help the Hmong people as he denied they were being persecuted. His political opponents stated it was a betrayal of a people who had spilt their blood defending American interests. The Republicans forced him to publically acknowledge the huge secret war in 1997. Then 8 long years later; some Hmong were allowed to resettle as political refugees in America.

Malala Yousafzai has asteroid named after her by Nasa scientist inspired by her amazing story Dr Amy Mainzer said she was inspired by the 17-year-old's brave activism An asteroid orbiting between Mars and Jupiter has been named after Malala Yousafzai. The Nasa astronomer who discovered it five years ago said she chose the name to honour the 17-year-old Nobel Prize winner. Dr Amy Mainzer, who works at the space agency’s jet propulsion laboratory in California, said she was inspired by a colleague who pointed out that of the many named asteroids, few honoured the contributions of women and even fewer were from ethnic minorities. amazing story and thought that if anyone deserves to have an asteroid named after them, she does,” Dr Mainzer added. Malala, co-recipient of the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize, was shot in the head in an attempted assassination attempt by the Pakistani Taliban on a school bus in 2012. She was targeted for her campaign against the extremist group’s crackdown on girls’ education, following years of blogging and interviews. This Mountain on Mars Is Leaking

nASA rover just completed the first-ever Mars marathon Seasonal flows spotted by HiRISE on northwestern slopes in Hale Crater. (NASA/JPL/University of Arizona) As the midsummer Sun beats down on the southern mountains of Mars, bringing daytime temperatures soaring up to a balmy 25ºC (77ºF), some of their slopes become darkened with long, rusty stains that may be the result of water seeping out from just below the surface. The image above, captured by the HiRISE camera aboard NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter on Feb. 20, shows mountain peaks within the 150km (93-mile) -wide Hale Crater. Made from data acquired in visible and near infrared wavelengths the long stains are very evident, running down steep slopes below the rocky cliffs. These dark lines, called recurring slope lineae (RSL) by planetary scientists, are some of the best visual evidence we have of liquid water existing on Mars today – although if RSL are the result of water it’s nothing you’d want to fill your astro-canteen with; based on the first appearances of these features in early Martian spring any water responsible for them would have to be extremely high in salt content. According to HiRISE Principal

Investigator Alfred McEwen “[t]he RSL in Hale have an unusually “reddish” color compared to most RSL, perhaps due to oxidized iron compounds, like rust.” See a full image scan of the region here, and watch an animation of RSL evolution (in another location) over the course of a Martian season here Hale Crater itself is likely no stranger to liquid water. Its geology strongly suggests the presence of water at the time of its formation at least 3.5 billion years ago in the form of subsurface ice (with more potentially supplied by its cosmic progenitor) that was melted en masse at the time of impact. Today carved channels and gullies branch within and around the Hale region, evidence of enormous amounts of water that must have flowed from the site after the crater was created. (Source.) The crater is named after George Ellery Hale, an astronomer from Chicago who determined in 1908 that sunspots are the result of magnetic activity. http://www.universetoday.com/

NASA’s Mars exploration rover Opportunity achieved a major milestone Tuesday, completing a marathon on the Red Planet. It has traveled a distance of 26.219 miles since it landed on Jan. 25, 2004. It may have taken the rover 11 years and two months, but it’s still a major accomplishment. “This is the first time any human enterprise has exceeded the distance of a marathon on the surface of another world,” NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s Opportunity project manager John Callas said in a statement. “A first time happens only once.” The rover’s original mission was supposed to last just three months, but it has continued to operate since then leading to many more discoveries. According to NASA, the rover team at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory has planned a marathon-length relay run to celebrate the Opportunity’s achievement. http://www.dailydot.com/

Spain Property Sector Still Recovering, Says BBVA

According to the BBVA’s ‘Flash Real Estate Spain’ report for April, the real estate sector in Spain is officially in recovery, and their statistics indicate that the situation is likely to continue, with the buying and selling of houses, construction and the signing of new mortgages continuing to rise, driven by the favourable economic conditions. The latest figures from the Notaries reveal that in January a total of 21,320 housing transactions were carried out, representing an increase of 2.4% over the month of December 2014, which the BBVA says confirms the growth trend shown over the last few months. The financial institution also pointed out that mortgage activity began to grow again in January, year-on-year, with both the number of new operations and the volume of associated credit increasing, over the same month of 2014, according to the National Statistics Institute’s data. In addition, the BBVA highlighted that, according to the National Statistics Institute’s House Price Index published in March, relating to the fourth quarter of 2014, housing values increased at a rate of 1.8%, year-on-year. El Mundo reported that, in seasonally adjusted terms, house prices showed increases, quarter-on-quarter, in Andalucía, the Balearic Islands, Cantabria, Castilla y León, Catalonia, Extremadura and Madrid, while in

annual average terms, housing prices rose in 2014 in the Balearic Islands, Cantabria, Catalonia, Valencia and Madrid. In Murcia and Andalucía, the prices remained practically stable. Housing construction activity returned to growth in January, increasing by 34.8% over the month of December, and the consumption of cement returned

to stability in February, although yearon-year the first two months of 2015 showed accumulated growth of 6.6%. The BBVA puts this positive trend down to the increase in employment, stating it is “one of the main foundations of residential demand” and added that “consumers’ expectations on the future of the economy are recovering, and are at historically high levels”, due to the increase in household wealth (up 3.5% in the last quarter of 2104), and also to the reduction in the cost of financing. IAG Passengers Increased by 9.1% to March

IAG transported 16.67 million passengers in the first three months of the year, representing an increase of 9.1% compared to the same period in 2014, the CNMV reported last week. The airline holding group, which is made up of Iberia, British Airways (BA) and Vueling, raised its demand by 6.2% from January to March 2015, after increasing its offer by 5%, with an occupation rate of 77.7%, up one percentage point. Iberia achieved growth in passenger traffic of 10.6% during this period, while Vueling recorded an increase of 14.1%, and BA passenger traffic rose by 4%. In March, IAG transported 6.2 million passengers, which is 10.5% more than in the same month of 2014, with an increase in business traffic of 5.4% compared last year. In the third month of the year, Vueling passenger traffic increased by 16.2%, while BA noted an increase of 5.1% in passenger traffic, but a decline in freight transport of 8.2%. Iberia passenger traffic rose in March by 11.5% and the freight transport side of the business registered growth of

13.1%. Up until March, ABC News reported that IAG transported 4.3 million passengers on its domestic business routes – which includes the United Kingdom, Spain and Italy – an increase of 10.2% over the same period in 2014, and 7.6 million European travellers, with an increase of 11.5%. North American business recorded growth of 1.8% in the number of passengers, to 1.8 million, while Latin American passengers increased by 9.7%, to 1.1 million travellers, and AsiaPacific passengers increased by 11.5%, to 0.4 million. In contrast, passenger traffic in Africa, the Middle East and South Asia decreased by 3.1%, to 1.3 million. Source: keyero.com

Make your second home in Spain pay for itself, or even make you a living

There’s no better feeling than realising the moment when your dream of buying a holiday home becomes a reality. For a few weeks or months each year you might escape there and holiday with family and friends. But for the rest of the year? Chances are it just lies empty, while you still have to cover the costs. Over half of holidaymakers use the internet for information and over 60% book their holiday online*. With the popularity of holiday rentals increasing, many owners are learning that renting out their property makes a substantial contribution towards running costs. The prevalence of holiday rental websites such as HomeAway. co.uk has made it far easier for holiday homeowners to advertise and rent their property to a global audience of holidaymakers. There are a variety of reasons for the increase in recent years of holiday rentals. These are largely

economic factors for both parties in the holiday rental process. The owner may need to rent their holiday home through the year to cover the costs associated with the property. They may also choose to rent their property as a means of earning additional income. For holidaymakers, it is the additional space and privacy a holiday rental offers compared to that of a hotel room. When you factor in the economics of each accommodation type, holiday rentals frequently offer the holidaymaker far better value for money, especially for families and friends who would otherwise require multiple rooms in a hotel. Spanish property prices rise 3.3% in last year Spanish real estate values have risen 3.3% on average in the last year, the latest index reveals. The best-performing area is Navarra, in the Pyrenees region, with an annual increase of 6.7% per square metre, followed by the Balearic Islands at 6.5%, states the Sociedad de Tasación (ST) Residential Real Estate Trends Report for Quarter 2, 2015. However, in eight districts, prices of new and existing homes are still dropping, with the biggest fall, 8.8%, coming in Cantabria and 5.9% in Castilla y Leon, says the property appraisal company. The average price of new and second hand residential properties is €1,316 per square metre, which is €10 less than the first three months of 2015 and 45.2% less than at its 2007 peak of €2,401. ST says the results show that after years of declining the Spanish property market is rising on average. “The analysis of the last one and a half years confirms that prices have reached bottom.” The average full salary needed to buy a property is now 7.7 years, a fall of one-tenth from the previous quarter. In early 2007 it was at 13.7 years. Price rises among medium-quality residences (2.8%) performed better than low-quality properties (1.9%) and high-quality homes (1%). Larger homes saw higher increases, as values of properties with three or more bedrooms increased 4.3% and those with two or less bedrooms fell 1.5%. The market was boosted by rising numbers of transactions and in the construction of new properties, which had been halted in previous years. More than 700 Spanish property experts contribute in the report and many are optimistic about future market performance. The market outlook is also rising and the ST Confidence Index, is at 47.4 points, up 2.9 year-on-year. The low point was in the first

quarter of 2013 at 30.6 points. Most property professionals are optimistic with 53.7 points confident that transactions will rise and 53.4 points saying that the stock situation will improve. * Meanwhile, the number of European passengers travelling to Spain through lowcost airlines has risen 14.4% in the last years.

Around 3.3million travellers used low cost airlines to get in and out of Spain during the first two months of 2015, according to the latest figures from the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism. Passengers from the UK make up around one-third of the total, while visitors from Italy, Germany, France and the Netherlands also account for significant proportions of those looking to soak up some Spanish sunshine. Traditional (non-budget) airlines saw an increase in passengers of 1.7%. The increase in tourism is also set to benefit the overseas property sector, says Marc Pritchard, of developer Taylor Wimpey España. “Increased tourist spending in Spain’s shops is a win for everyone. It stimulates the economy, promotes employment and serves to bolster the housing market. It should be a very positive summer for Spain this year as tourists save on their flights in order to spend while they are on holiday here.” New routes are helping to fuel the appetite for cheap flights to Spain. Norwegian has just launched three new Spanish routes from the UK’s Birmingham Airport, flying to Madrid, Malaga and Barcelona. Spanish airport operator Aena has revealed that more than one million flights have already been planned to and from Spain in the summer, up 3.6% annually. A record 65 million tourists visited Spain last year, according to the UN World Tourism Organization. http://www.opp.today/

Get the pool ready for summer 1.Remove the Leaves and Debris This is the obvious first step of readying your pool to welcome summer. Use a leaf rake to scrape the surface of the cover clean of dried and dead leaves, algae, and other debris. You can also tie your pool brush at the end of a long pole and use a bag-type leaf net to clean the top of the cover and collect the debris. Just remember to use these pieces of equipment carefully so that you do not upset the pool cover. 2.Remove the Top Cover Now that the cover of the pool is clean, it is time to remove it. It may not be realized by many homeowners but removing the top cover of the pool is a delicate task. There may be molten ice or snow on the cover which you will need to first pump out so that it does not run into the pool and dirty it. Use a small cover pump for the job; you call pull the edges of the cover to flatten and tighten it and make the snow and ice melt accumulate in one spot. You can also use a leaf blower under the cover to inflate it and make the melt gather in one easy-to-pump area. Now that the cover is clean, remove it by fan-folding it in into folds not more than five feet wide. Make sure that you thoroughly clean and dry it before stowing it away. 3.Check the Condition of the Water After lying unused for months on end, your pool might have gathered quite some amount of debris, leaves, and algae. Check the water and the water level. If the water appears cloudy, it means that there are still dirt and debris in the pool. Use a leaf rake- or bag-type skim net to skim the surface of the water and also scoop up the dirt and debris from the bottom of the pool. Look carefully to ascertain if there are silt deposits in the pool. Also look closely at the walls to see if algae and moss are clinging to these surfaces. You will need to vacuum the floors and walls to ensure that these dirt particles do not end up in the filtration system because they can clog it up. An effective way to vacuum your pool after days of not using it is to shove the dirt out through the backwash line. 4.Check the Filtration System Now that you have cleaned the water in the pool and the various pool surfaces, check the filtration system. You might need to change the sand or the cartridge (depending on the type of unit installed). Next put the filter valve in the filtering mode, adjust all the pipes, and start filtering. But before, make

sure that the valves and the rings are adequately lubricated and are working without hitches. Get free custom advice for your home Ask an Expert 5.Tighten the Pipes You had most likely de-assembled the pool pump and filtration unit at the start of winter. So, after you re-assemble the unit for the summer, make sure that all the pipes are tight and no screw is loose or sticking out. You can use a commercial thread sealant for the threaded plugs but make sure that you do not tighten too much. An effective way to checks for pump leaks is to fill the pump basket with water, close the lid tightly, and then check for seepages. And while you are tightening the pipes, also make it a point to check if the valves and pressure relief outlets are open. 6.Check the Chemical Balance of the Water You cannot yet jump into your pool. The water might look clean and inviting but you need to be sure about its chemical balance. You can either take a sample to be tested by a professional or invest in a test kit to do this easy task yourself. First check the alkalinity of the water. The ideal value should be anything between 80 and 120 parts per million (PPM). If it is less than this range, add calcium chloride to the water. A pound of this substance added to 10,000 gallons of water will raise the alkaline value by 5 PPM. Let the water sit for about eight hours before testing again. The pH level too will have increased when you added the calcium mixture. The pH level should be

Oil discovery near Gatwick airport

There could be up to 100 billion barrels of oil onshore beneath the South of England, says exploration firm UK Oil & Gas Investments (UKOG). Last year, the firm drilled a well at Horse Hill, near Gatwick airport, and analysis of that well suggests the local area could hold 158 million barrels of oil per square mile. But only a fraction of the 100 billion total would be recovered, UKOG admits. The North Sea has produced about 45 billion barrels in 40 years. “We think we’ve found a very significant discovery here, probably the largest [onshore in the UK] in the last 30 years, and we think it has national significance,” Stephen Sanderson, UKOG’s chief executive told the BBC. UKOG says that the majority of the oil lies within the Upper Jurassic Kimmeridge formation at a depth of between 2,500ft (762m) and 3,000ft (914m). It describes this as a “world class potential resource” and that the well has the “potential for significant daily oil production”. Compared with similar geology in the US and West Siberia, it estimates that 3% to 15% of the oil could be recovered. Underground riches Oil has been produced onshore in the South of England for decades. There are currently around a dozen oil production sites across the Weald, a region spanning Kent, Sussex, Surrey and Hampshire. Last year, a report for the government by the British Geological Survey estimated that the region may have shale oil resources in the range of 2.2-to-8.5 billion barrels, with a central estimate of 4.4 billion barrels of oil. UKOG says that it drilled the deepest well in the region in the last 30 years and that the results “comprehensively change the understanding of the area’s potential oil resources”. “Based on what we’ve found here, we’re looking at between 50 and 100 billion barrels of oil in place in Prompt and reliable service, the ground,” says Mr Sanderson. no job too small. “We believe we can recover between 5% and 15% of Full bathrooms or just makeovers the oil in the ground, which by 2030 could mean that we produce 10%-to-30% of the UK’s oil demand from and handyman service. within the Weald area.” 24 hour call out ‘Significant’ Boilers: 80 litre fully installed from 160€ Work currently under way at Imperial College also that there may be more oil in the region Call David on 634 286 590 suggests than previously thought. The Standoff

Rodriquez was now in control of the Remitroot crop and purposely withholding the product in order to cause discontent in Alqueria thus forcing a general election which he intended to win by foul means or fair. He used a variety of excuses to explain why the product wasn’t being delivered. To justify his actions he produced reams of elaborate horticultural statistics backed up by supposedly sound metrological data. He didn’t need to employ this subterfuge however, simply by running the plant to the best of his ability would guarantee a shortage and eventually the total collapse of the entire Remitroot industry. Under his careful management the plant was already in decline. Poyato, the previous owner had a ‘duty of care’ to his workforce. Rodriguez’s duty of care was to his wallet and he cut more corners than an Formula One driver. Manuela now had to act and the Remitroot enterprise was duly nationalised under the trade-name of AlquiRoot, with an advertising jingle of: ‘AlquiRoot for her, AlquiRoot for he, AlquiRoot for dinner, AlquiRoot for tea, AlquiRoot, AlquiRoot, teeheehee’. Unfortunately Rodriquez refused to give up the plant and as the Alquerian establishment employed only one policeman, José Cabrasilbido who could be terrorised by a balloon on a stick a standoff ensued. Manuela then went for Rodriquez’s metaphoric jugular and banned Abyssinian Goat Shirling. A sport Rodriquez loved above all else and which had already been

banned in practically e v e r y civilised c o u n t r y. He was so passionate about the sport he once tried to swap his wife’s favours for ten minutes at the Shirling pit. His wife didn’t complain about the potential deal but the third party demanded cash after meeting her. Who would break first, Rodriquez denied his beloved Abyssinian Goat Shirling or the people of Alqueria without their Remitroot? The lack of Remitroot was taking a toll, people, young and old staggered in the streets, wide-eyed, sober and desolate. Manuela herself was irritable and edgy. Without their daily intake of ‘Remitroot the aphrodisiac’ her men-friends had taken up the delights of stamp collecting and folk dancing instead of delighting Manuela. Rodriguez couldn’t contemplate a life without Goat Shirling. He looked for other venues but apart from a remote village in the Ibebuggar Gorge of southern KwaKnutshurt there were none. Rodriquez reluctantly admitted defeat and gave control of the Remitroot crop back to Poyato. With Poyato once more at the helm Remitroot soon flowed freely into the streets and veins of Alqueria and its singular population.

Special Circumstances The situation was fraught. Pete had been loaded into the back of the ambulance. The doctor fixed me with an emphatic eye, and an even more emphatic moustache. ‘You must follow close behind the ambulance. I need you at the hospital when we arrive. They will not admit your husband unless he has someone with him who can speak Spanish.’ I nodded. The situation was not new to me. The ambulance screamed off, orange lights blazing, with Henry the car following in its wake like a tender to a yacht. We circumnavigated the roundabouts at Arboleas on two wheels, and then settled into a relaxed 100k per hour. As we passed through Los Carasoles, with its irritating flashing lights and 60k speed limit, I thought ‘All I need now is to be stopped by the police.’ To think is to act. The man in green stepped into the road, hand raised. Henry came to a halt within inches of his toes. I rolled down the window ‘I’m following that ambulance. My husband is in the ambulance, and we are going to the hospital.’ I explained as the ambulance disappeared into the distance. ‘You were speeding.’ Came the laconic reply. ‘I know.’ I admitted, repeating the previous explanation, and added a few graphic details to drive the gravity of the situation home to him. By now Guardia #2 and #3 had joined us. I explained all over again, but my tale of woe was listened to with not a flicker of sympathy. ‘You could have caused an

By Jos Biggs

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk accident. You were driving over the speed limit. It’s dangerous.’ they separately added. I considered pointing out that if there was an accident, the ambulance would almost certainly have been the one to cause it, but instead I decided on pathos. ‘I really need to get to the hospital, the doctor told me I had to follow the ambulance closely. He said I had to be with him when he arrives.’ I wasted my breath. I took my ticket and departed with as much speed as the Law would allow. I can appeal, but it’s a lost cause. Special circumstances will cut no ice with the three Officers of the Law, who will point out that I do not deny doing 101k in a 60k area, adding that they can’t remember an ambulance, and in any case they didn’t understand what I was telling them. But they did understand. I know they did.

facts about asparagus

• Asparagus is a member of the Lily family. • Asparagus spears grow from a crown that is planted about a foot deep in sandy soils. • Under ideal conditions, an asparagus spear can grow 10" in a 24-hour period. • Each crown will send spears up for about 6-7 weeks during the spring and early summer. • The outdoor temperature determines how much time will be between each picking...early in the season, there may be 4-5 days between pickings and as the days and nights get warmer, a particular field may have to be picked every 24 hours. • After harvesting is done the spears grow into ferns, which produce red berries and the food and nutrients necessary for a

healthy and productive crop the next season. • An asparagus planting is usually not harvested for the first 3 years after the crowns are planted allowing the crown to develop a strong fibrous root system. • A well cared for asparagus planting will generally produce for about 15 years without being replanted. • The larger the diameter, the better the quality! • Asparagus is a nutrient-dense food which in high in Folic Acid and is a good source of potassium, fiber, vitamin B6, vitamins A and C, and thiamin. • Asparagus has No Fat, contains No Cholesterol and is low in Sodium.

ROCKIN’ IN THE AISLES FOR ALZHEIMERS Another successful fund-raising night at El Alto La Dolores Restaurant in Guardamar, when Woody & The Peckers literally had diners jiving and strolling in the aisles, as well as the dance floor. This event was in aid of The Alzheimers Association (AFA), and all profit from ticket sales and the raffle, which amounted to 575.60 euros, has been given to AFA. Matilda Sanchez, President of AFA, told how their Government funding is never sufficient to meet their needs. With the exception of trained professionals, all their staff are volunteers, who do not even claim expenses. They work so hard to make life more comfortable for

is on Sunday 26th April. It will be held in a small sports centre on Urbanisation Balcon de la Costa, just off the CV 95 outside San Miguel de Salinas. The urbanisation entrance opposite the Ford Garage will be signposted on the day to show where to turn off the CV95. The gate opens at 12.00pm and there will be an hour for the registration of dogs by their owners into the various classes. The judging starts at 1.00pm (or 1.15pm) if an hour turns out not to be long enough. There will also be various stalls for people to browse on and buy things. Some are APAH stalls, but there are quite a few businesses who are coming along with a variety of goods on offer. There will also be hot and cold food and drink available for people to buy. The entrance/registration fee for dogs/owners is 10 euros (unlimited class entry) and for spectators 1 euro (under 12yrs are free) and there will be programmes on sale with the chance to win a food hamper, which is drawn after the presentation of the Best in Show Trophy. All the information is on our web site www. apahrescue.org our Facebook site www.facebook. com/ApahRescueSanPedro or by calling 677 808 856.

The Mar Menor is a huge (135 square kilometres) salt-water lagoon, separated from the Mediterranean by the 24 kilometre long La Manga del Mar Menor (The Strip). The average depth of the Mar Menor is four metres and at its maximum it is seven metres which means that the seabed slopes very gradually and you have to get several hundred metres in before the water is of any depth. The Mar Menor’s salinity provides buoyancy so it is, supposedly, one of the safest places to swim in the world. The mineral-rich waters are said to have therapeutic effects and because of this the area has a significant spa tourism industry. The sludge in the salt pans is also credited with beneficial effects on the health, so there are often dozens of mud people wallowing in it at any one time. Playa Paraiso beach on a summer weekendThe beach at Playa Paraiso is very popular, partly because it has road access right onto the beach. On summer weekends it will be packed with Spanish families, who move most of their house onto the beach. The sea is very shallow, with netted off areas to exclude watersports, fishing and jellyfish. The jellyfish are mainly harmless and much reduced in numbers from previous years, apart from the summer of 2006 when they were back with a vengeance. Playa Honda beach During the week the beach is quiet.

How to help protect your dog against fleas & ticks When you and your family enjoy the warm weather of spring and summer, don’t forget to take steps to help protect your dog against fleas and ticks.

Recent years have marked the warmest winters and overall weather ever recorded in the continental United States1. While the mild temperatures and early spring weather have been great for getting outside with your pets, it also means an earlier flea and tick season. Ticks survive the winter in microclimates, and after the thaw a feeding and breeding female tick can lay hundreds to thousands of eggs at one time2. Fleas can survive freezing temperatures on wild or feral animals, cocooned as immature pupae, or inside houses and buildings3. With temperatures in the 50s, 60’s, and even 70s, an early spring also means an early season for these bloodsucking parasites. It’s practically impossible to keep fleas and ticks completely at bay. But there are some steps you can take to try and minimize the opportunities for contact with your pet. Fleas. Wildlife, including opossums, coyotes, raccoons, and skunks, and even untreated cats and dogs can deposit flea eggs into a yard. It may be possible to reduce flea infestations by limiting the access

these animals have around your house and yard. Your local nursery or garden professional may have some advice on what to plant or other strategies to discourage animal trespassers. Ticks It can be helpful for pet owners to alter the landscape around their homes to make it unsuitable for ticks and their hosts. For example, keep the lawn mowed, remove leaf litter accumulations and prune shrubs and trees.4 Contact a professional pest specialist if you have any questions regarding environmental treatments for ticks. Use a flea and tick control product Despite your efforts to reduce the fleas and ticks in your yards, our pets may still be exposed to these parasites, so you should take measures to help protect them. Treat all dogs and cats in the household with a flea and tick control product. One untreated pet can lead to a flea infestation in the household. FRONTLINE® brand products can help protect your dog from unexpected flea and tick sources by killing adult fleas, eggs and larvae, and all stages of ticks. FRONTLINE Plus not only stops existing flea infestations, but also prevents the establishment of new infestations. Consistency is key. Even one missed dose of your monthly flea and tick control can set the stage for a flea infestation that takes months to resolve, or put your pet at greater risk of exposure to a tick borne disease. So be sure you treat your pet now and continue monthly applications throughout the rest of the year. Read more: http://www.cesarsway.com

Why are dogs’ noses wet?

By Josh Weiss-Roessler For many dog owners, it’s one of life’s greatest joys: You enter a room and immediately your pooch is at your side and shoving his face into you, sniffing away with his cold, wet nose. It’s something that should probably feel disgusting, but instead it’s wonderful and endearing to have that slimy little thing all up in your business. Have you ever wondered why dogs’ noses are wet, though? Your nose works perfectly fine dry, so what’s up with their sniffers? It turns out that there are many reasons for those wet noses — and a big misconception about what wet vs. dry noses really mean. 5 reasons your dog has a wet nose Why are dogs’ noses wet? Let us count the reasons. Because they secrete mucus Before you get too grossed out that your pup has been rubbing her mucus-ridden schnoz all over you, this doesn’t mean what you think it means. When dogs are trying to follow a specific scent, their noses make a thin layer of mucus that allows them to actually absorb scent chemicals and, therefore, smell better. Because dogs tend to lick them a lot This one seems pretty straightforward, but there’s more to it — namely, why dogs lick their noses. There are two main reasons. First, because those long snouts and noses can get dirty pretty easily, especially when they’re rooting around in food. Licking cleans them off. Dogs also lick their noses because of the mucus mentioned above. Why? Because they can actually lick off those TRAVELLING IN AIR CONDITIONED VEHICLE scent chemicals DELIVERED TO DOOR so that the olfactory glands PETS STAY IN PET FRIENDLY HOTELS. on the roof of ACCOMPANIED TRAVEL AVAILABLE their mouth can sample them. Most dog owners know that dogs pant to cool off rather than sweating, but this isn’t strictly true. Dogs do actually sweat — by secreting moisture from their paws and their nose. A really wet nose may be Fido’s way of releasing heat after exerting himself. Because dogs’ noses tend to pick up moisture If you’ve ever watched your dog sniffing around outside, you know that it’s an “all-in” process where that nose is often being shoved right into grass, leaves, dirt, and so on. In doing this, dogs’ noses often pick up moisture from the environment, making them cold and wet. Because they’re born that way Certain dogs and dog breeds just have colder, wetter noses than others due to genetics and other factors. A dry nose doesn’t necessarily mean your dog is sick Now it’s time to dispel a myth. It’s likely that you’ve heard tales of how a hot, dry nose means that your dog is sick. In fact, you may have even spent some time in the vet’s office due to this little piece of acquired knowledge. However, it’s just an old wives’ tale. Ask a vet and they will tell you that the relative moisture level of your dog’s nose has little to do with whether or not she’s sick. Some dogs just naturally have wetter noses than others, for one, so a drier nose may be perfectly normal for your pup. Beyond this, the temperature and moisture level of your dog’s nose likely fluctuates quite a bit on a normal day, so it’s quite possible for it to be wet in the morning, dry in the middle of the day, and slimy again in the evening. Also, it’s important to note that dogs can be sick even if their noses are cold and wet. Instead of obsessing over the moisture level, you should keep an eye on the kind of discharge coming from your dog’s nose. If the mucus suddenly become crusty or gets thicker, this can be a sign that something is wrong. There are so many types of dogs, hunting dogs, guard dogs, herding dogs, companion dogs, working dogs, which one is yours? Read more: http://www.cesarsway. com

My personal favourite is Shrimp, a cute little Welsh Cardigan corgi who nearly didn’t make it. Thanks to nine year old Emily, a couple of butterfly clips and Emily’s caring mother not to mention a puppy formula from the vet’s and before long Shrimp was thriving even though Emily treated him like her little dolly: “He suffered Emily dressing him in baby clothes, wheeling around in a pram, because she always rewarded him with a biscuit when he lay there patiently.” She taught him tricks and delighted in him doing his tricks for her parents. Her father thought him cute and his intuition told him that there was more to Shrimp than meets the eye. “I can’t get over how he seems to understand everything we say. I almost think sometimes he is going to answer us.” And yes, you’ve guessed it! “Shrimp was a magical little dog.” If he wanted to, he could talk. He developed an adventurous nature, tootling off on his own, slipping in and out of buses and venturing into town in search of a bit of excitement. Tantalising smells of delicious food tempted him. “The smell of paradise” to one little Shrimp. A few cute tricks performed and a nice tasty reward of mouth-watering delicacies. He was everybody’s favourite. Find out how he turns into a hero by saving Eric’s life, a silly boy who had been playing with matches. It’s a heart-warming tale about a wonderful little fella, everyone’s best friend. One of the traditional tales was

pause for thought

Well here I am in Bagamoyo (just outside Dar-Es Salaam, for the unaware, in Tanzania, on the East Coast of Africa), being woken up at Sunrise every morning by a 200 decibel rendition of the Adhan or ‘Call to Prayer’ from the adjacent Mosque. We Christians, especially after being so rudely awakened, sometimes scorn or criticise this Adhan, but I’d suggest we’d do well to consider its meaning. For, accepting that ‘Allah’ is the Arabic equivalent of the Hebrew word ‘Abba’, meaning ‘Daddy’, which Jesus used in reference to our Heavenly Father, then there’s actually only one phrase in this ‘call’ which I might question; for translated into English the eight phrases of the Adhan, repeated from the Mosque five times per day, are:- “Allah is the greatest; there is no God but Allah; Mohammed is his messenger; Hasten to worship; Hasten to success; Prayer is better than sleep; Allah is the greatest; There is no God but Allah”. OK, we may well question reference to Mohammed, though we can’t emphatically be sure that he wasn’t a messenger of God to some. And we might with some justification wish to

add a phrase regarding the way in which God revealed Himself to us through Jesus rather than Mohammed, so that a Christian version of this call might read “God is the greatest; There is no other God but Him; He revealed Himself to us in Jesus, who gave His life in our place; Hurry now to worship; to gain a life at peace with Him; for Prayer is better than sleep; God is the greatest; There is no other God but Him.” Can we disagree with this? Could we be prepared to commit ourselves, as Muslims the World over do, to come to God in prayer and Worship five times every day? Is prayer more valuable than sleep? If so, then what a great lesson Islam has to teach us, and how much we could gain from using this call to awaken ourselves and join in regular worship of our God.Details of a number of English Language Churches are given in Sol Noticeboard for any wishing to Worship, whilst additionally, further information about the Anglican Church in this area may be seen on the web site www.mojacarchurch. org. How to plant your spring bulbs

Bulbs are some of the easiest garden plants to grow, needing only a well-drained soil and some sunshine. As a general rule, plant bulbs two to three times their own depth and around two bulb widths apart. It’s important to plant bulbs with its top facing upwards. If unsure, plant the bulb on its side.

Replace the soil after planting, breaking down any large clumps and firm in gently, making sure there are no air spaces around the bulbs. Bulbs in lawns Naturalise bulbs in lawns by taking a handful and dropping from waist height. Plant where they land with a strong trowel or bulb planter - these are ideal for digging into heavy clay soil. To use,

push the cylindrical blade down, twist and pull up a plug of soil. Drop the bulb in, flattest side down, and crumble the plug into the hole. In order to save time, try planting a large number of small bulbs by lifting a piece of turf and planting a group of bulbs in the soil. Bulbs in pots When growing bulbs in a pot, pick a container that is the right size and will complement your chosen bulbs. If you are using a clay pot with a large drainage hole in the base, cover it with a piece of broken pot. Fill pots with general-purpose compost, mixed with a handful of horticultural grit to improve drainage. Water after planting.

petanca league

It was a bittersweet afternoon for the presentation of Sunshine Radio International Petanca League trophies. The Sunshine league was the creation of Bob Hornsey who very sadly and suddenly died on 11th March 2015. Bob was 65 years old and since his move to Spain had been associated indeed the instigator - of many local clubs including San Miguel Tigers, Dominoes, Florentilles, Laguna Vista, Los Balcones and Pumas. Bob had also been President and Secretary of Las Salinas Petanca League. But undoubtedly his biggest achievement was the setting up of the Sunshine Radio International Petanca League. This does not happen overnight and took him over a year to put together. The league had the backing of Sunshine Radio and in particular their presenter Simon Morton. Teams were eager to join because of Bob who promised a fun and friendly league. He was enthusiastic, knowledgeable and well liked, so the league took off. April 2nd was the 1st presentation party of the league and Bob would have thoroughly enjoyed it as it had an atmosphere that he so used to revel in. Simon Morton gave a heartfelt speech about Bob before presenting the trophies and medals,

with the help of Jacqueline Lopez, to the winners. Winners Division A Mixtas. Division B Guardamar. Cup Mixtas. Plate Laguna Vista. Bowl Mix ‘n’ Match. The match between winners of A and B was Mixtas. Congratulations to all winners and indeed those teams who played and won nothing -- better luck next year! After the ceremony and all photographs were taken, a magnificent hog roast with all the trimmings was laid on. Our thanks go to Dominoes Bar and their staff for use of the their venue and hard work. So, the Winter League is now truly done and dusted and having had a few weeks respite our thoughts turn to the Summer Sunshine League due to start on 10th April. This will continue until mid July by which time the sun will win over being able to play comfortably. The league committee are already planning for next Winter and would be happy to increase the number of clubs participating - so - if your club would like to apply please get in touch :sunshine.radio.petanca@gmail. com

Elche earn breathing space Los ilicitanos scored two to beat a home team that remain on course for relegation. Córdoba CF fell to a 0-2 defeat against Elche CF on matchday 31 of the Liga BBVA. Enzo Roco and Mario Pašalić were the scorers in a clash that leaves los ilicitanos breathing easier as they approach the fixtures to come. José Antonio Romero’s Córdoba outfit made the more settled start to the match, but their sloppiness and the passing minutes worked in favour of a visiting side that came into the game after the first quarter of an hour. The tempo of the encounter slowed, with both outfits applying scant pressure and creating few chances. Los blanquiverdes tentatively sought a way through courtesy of the likes of Fede Cartabia and Borja García, but it was Elche who took the lead when Enzo Roco took advantage of a free-kick hung into the box to make it 0-1 after 40’. There was little change to the script in the second half. Córdoba pressed for an equaliser, but without overly threatening.

René Khrin enjoyed their clearest opportunity with a header that hit the post, but just two minutes after that chance Fran Escribá’s side grabbed a second as Pašalić headed in at the far post from a corner. Having fallen two behind the hosts sought to die fighting, but their efforts only yielded a few moments of danger that were all thwarted by keeper Przemysław Tytoń, and Elche sealed a victory to move away from the drop. lfp.es

Once again perfect conditions for playing golf on Friday and Alenda provided us with a course in perfect condition for a full turn out of members and it is obvious many changes have gone on and still going on, e.g. new bunkers going in on the 9th. this will make the Par 5, HCP 14 more difficult.

Even though the greens were very slow and caught many out I have to say it didn’t cause too much of a problem because 50% of those playing managed that magic 30+ score for our Stableford Competition with the winners in 3 Categories to-day being, Category 1. 1st. The two league cup finalists met in a league match and it was The Med Bistro & Bar that came out on top, helping themselves to an 8 – 0 win and, saw them move back to the top of the league. I’ve left the best to the last when, Right Move Insurance took on The Dreamers. With personnel records being broken all over the place, it was RMIs Dave Haynes that took pride of place. With a 630 scr and 699 h/c series, Dave blitzed his highs for the season and, with Stewart Hamill and Brian Tomlin weighing in with 588 and 593 h/c series, RMI took the team high series h/c on the night, with a brilliant 1880 total. This ensured RMI took all 8 points and, left TD’s Pete Ward and Betty Galley, who also hit personal highs for the season, ruing that they had met a rampant RMI.

The first of our April events took us to the course that you either love or hate, Las Ramblas. it’s clear to see from the results that those of our members who play this course well are either members of Las Ramblas or play it often. the best score of the day was a very credible 37 points by Ove Cederberg, Lars Jernberg was again in the prizes with 2nd placed 35 points, Kari Huopalahti beat John Eyre on lowest h’cap both with 31 points. All 4 of the N.T.P.’s were won, although it did require a little negociation to decide who was closest on the 12th, as the 1st group out forgot to leave the N.T.P. marker ( so obviously the closest was not in their group !)
