Foreign Ministry working to locate 116 Spaniards in wake of Nepal quake Foreign Minister José Manuel García-Margallo is in New Delhi organizing evacuation effort

The Foreign Ministry has located 342 Spaniards and is still looking for 116 others who were in Nepal at the time a powerful earthquake struck the small Asian nation on Saturday, killing at least 3,600 people according to the latest reports.

The Airbus 310 that recently took Foreign Minister José Manuel García-Margallo to India on an official three-day visit is expected to make two trips to the Nepalese capital on Monday to fly Spaniards to New Delhi. The aircraft will carry around 70 passengers on each flight. There are officially 121 Spaniards living in the Nepalese capital, of whom 40 spent the night inside the offices of a Spanish construction company. Diplomatic sources said that Margallo will delay his return to Madrid, which was scheduled for Tuesday morning, in order to organize the evacuation from Kathmandu, located around 800 kilometers from New Delhi. The Spanish embassy in New Delhi (Spain has no diplomatic representation in Nepal) is regularly updating its list of citizens who have been found. Efforts are

being hindered by the fact that many tourists do not sign up to the embassy’s traveler registry. So far, no deaths or injuries among the Spanish colony in Nepal have been reported.

Foreign minister Jose Manuel GarciaMargallo will delay his return from India to help evacuate Spaniards from Nepal. A team made up of Spain’s consul general in New Delhi, Laura García Alfaya, the interior affairs attaché, Ramón Gómez Nieto, and a police officer specializing in rescue operations traveled to Kathmandu on Sunday to help find Spaniards in the area and organize the evacuation of those wishing to leave the country. There are officially 121 Spaniards living in the Nepalese capital, of whom 40 spent the night inside the offices of a Spanish construction company named San José, which is working on the airport’s new terminal. Meanwhile, the Spanish International Cooperation and Development Agency (AECID) has readied a Hercules transport aircraft with 30 tons of emergency material that will join the international relief effort as soon as all permits are secured. Court upholds ban on replacing Atlético stadium with high-rises

3

City of Madrid will appeal the decision in a bid to move the soccer club to La Peineta A regional court has struck down a longstanding plan by the city of Madrid and the soccer team Atlético de Madrid to replace the Vicente Calderón stadium with skyscrapers. Under the plan, two 36-story residential towers would go up in an area near the Manzanares River where legislation establishes a maximum height of four floors. The project has been plagued by financial and legal hurdles ever since its inception in 2008 The developers’ idea was to use the money from the sale of the 2,000 homes to finance construction of a new stadium in La Peineta, a decaying site once envisioned as part of Madrid’s Olympic bid. Atlético was originally supposed to move this year; the deadline was then delayed to 2017.

case, the beermaker Mahou, whose old brewery is located next to the Vicente Calderón stadium. In order to circumvent its own building code, Madrid’s city council, which is ruled by the Popular Party (PP), changed zoning laws to allow the highrises to go up in the area. The regional assembly, also under PP control, sanctioned the changes to provide additional legal support to the project.

But the project has been plagued by financial and legal troubles ever since its inception seven years ago.

But this legal move was challenged in the courts by an association called Señales de Humo, made up of Atlético de Madrid members who were critical of the way the club was being run.

In 2012, the Madrid Superior Court of Justice (TSJM) first halted it on the grounds that building that high was illegal. The original suit had been brought by an association of Atlético fans who disagreed with the plans to move.

Atlético managers made a deal with Mahou to tear down the stadium and the brewery and build enough homes to cover the costs of buying the land where La Peineta stands (€41.2 million) and erecting a brand new stadium there (€195 million).

But the city appealed to the Supreme Court, which ruled that the entire case had to be started from the beginning because it had not taken into account the position of another party with an interest in the

Despite the city coming up with a new development plan in 2014 that altered the number of floors to be built, among other things, the TSJM still considers that this project also falls under the four-floor rule.

The secretary of state for the Public Works Ministry, Julio Gómez Pomar, admitted on Sunday that fuel oil is still leaking from the fishing boat, adding that it is very hard to work out the amount that is already in the sea. Gómez explained that, since the beginning of the crisis, just 400 kilos of hydrocarbons have been recovered. The main job for the coastguard ships that are in the area so far is to disperse the slicks that are threatening to wash up on the coast of the islands.

The alarm was raised on Saturday, when the Canarian government announced that an oil slick was located just a few miles of the south of Tenerife, only to later rectify that news. ORIHUELA COSTA RBL GET A TOUR OF SPAIN’S TRAFFIC LAWS

The Orihuela Costa Branch of the Royal British Legion gathered at the Olympia Restaurant Mil Palmeras last Thursday evening for their regular monthly meeting although with rather more anticipation than is usually the case as the evening’s guest speaker was Francisco Morales, a serving member of the Guardia Civil. Francisco, who is one of a team of five volunteers behind the increasingly popular N332 Website and Facebook page, explained that he was delighted to attend the meeting. After his colleague Mark Nolan had explained the thinking behind the Facebook venture, which had grown from humble beginnings just two short months ago to a reference site with over 10,000 followers, Francisco took to the floor with his presentation on Driving in Spain. He started with background on the Guardia Civil themselves, many of whom are currently serving across the globe alongside the United Nations. He explained that having returned from serving a 12 month tour in a conflict zone himself he joined Trafico in Torrevieja when he quickly became aware of the difficulties faced by expatriate drivers in Spain. His concerns were shared by a number of colleagues so, together, they hit on the idea of the Facebook site. At no stage though did they ever consider just how popular it would become with it now reaching the point where it virtually needs full time attention. Francisco spoke in very general terms about problems experienced by

expat drivers as he briefly examined the law and although he wasn’t able to deal with specific problems he did take questions which were answered by email the following day. Following the presentation the Branch Chairman Keith Carter spoke of the close relationship that had developed between the Guardia Civil and the Royal British Legion in the area, thanking him for his talk and inviting him to attend the Remembrance Day Service in Mil Palmeras. Francisco was then presented with a Certificate of Appreciation together with a number of small souvenirs. Amy Winehouse family condemn documentary A m y Winehouse's family has criticised a documentary about the late singer's life saying it is "misleading and contains some basic untruths". Director A s i f Kapadia's film Amy is due to pre mie re at next month's Cannes Film Festival. Winehouse's family released a statement on Sunday saying that the film suggested family members did too little to help the singer, who died in July 2011 of accidental alcohol poisoning. She was 27. The soul diva, whose 2006 album Back to Black won five Grammy Awards, had battled drug and alcohol abuse for years. The family statement said the movie did not reflect the "huge effort from all concerned to help Amy at all stages". "Fundamentally, the Winehouse family believes that the film does a disservice to individuals and families suffering from the complicated affliction of addiction," it said. The filmmakers said in a statement that they began work with "total objectivity" and the support of the Winehouse family.

Three Spanish hotels among European Top 10

THREE hotels in Spain have made it into the Top 10 in Europe, with one of them sitting at number three.

The 22-year-old from Cervera (Lleida province) has just been discharged from the Dexeus Institute University Hospital after having had a titanium plate inserted into the little finger on his left hand. “Once again, I’d like to thank Dr Javier Mir - I don’t know what we’d do without him,” said the MotoGP star on Facebook.

The four-star Hotel Bahía Santander (pictured), in the capital city of the northern region of Cantabria, came third overall and was followed by Madrid’s Hotel Wellington. In the survey, respondents were asked to give their views on level of service, quality of rooms, value for money, quality of food served, design and cleanliness - and Spain was the only country with three hotels in the list. Prague has two - the Hotel Roma Prague at number five and the Hotel Eurostars David at number seven - but Spain got the most, with Valencia’s Hotel Zenit at number six. All other countries had just one entry, including the UK with the Park Plaza County Hall Hotel in London coming 10th. The Savhotel in Bologna, Italy was 8th, and the Hotel Meliá in Berlin, Germany came 9th. Among those which scored highly but did not make the Top 10, several others

MotoGP: Marc Márquez says hand operation will not stop him riding in Jerez

TWICE-WORLD champion Marc Márquez has just undergone an operation on a broken finger - but says he will not miss the Grand Prix in Jerez on Sunday, May 3.

According to a recent survey of European hotels, the best of all is in Innsbruck, Austria - named, originally, the Hotel Innsbruck followed by the Hotel Marquês de Pombal in Lisbon, Portugal, which was the most-voted by Spanish people taking part in the survey on travel website eDreams.

He broke his finger on Saturday when practicing dirt-track riding, one of his favourite training methods, and was rushed immediately to hospital for an operation, since any delays could risk leaving his hand at less than 100% and, unlike the majority in Spain did in fact get into the best 10 in individual categories. The Holiday Inn Express in Alicante was the best in terms of value for money, followed by the Hotel Vetusta in Oviedo, in the northern region of Asturias. And the H10 Ítaca Hotel in Barcelona shone for its cuisine, style and design, with the Barceló Jerez Montecastillo & Convention Centre second for its food. The Bahía Santander, Hotel Wellington and Zenit Valencia scored second, third and fourth for Spanish respondents, with the Marquês de Pombal in Lisbon first and the Eurostars David in Prague fifth Source: thinksapin

Dr Mir normally attends all the Grand Prix and will be keeping an eye on Márquez’s hand to ensure he will be up to racing on home turf. Quarter of Spaniards think the Sun revolves around Earth, survey reveals

Thirty percent of Spaniards think that humans once lived alongside the dinosaurs, like in The Flintstones, while 25 percent think the Sun revolves around the Earth, rather than the other way around. The figures may be horrifying, but they are nevertheless an improvement: in 2006, the proportions were almost 50 and

40 percent, respectively. The new Social Perception of Science Survey is keen to highlight that Spaniards’ scientific literacy has increased over the last nine years, with the number of correct answers rising from an average 58 percent to 70 percent. Some 11.5 percent of those surveyed refute that humans are descended from animals Nevertheless, barely 46 percent of people in Spain know that antibiotics cannot cure diseases caused by viruses, only those that originate from bacteria, while 11.5 percent refute that humans are descended from animals – something that could be a result of the times when the Catholic Church banned Spanish television from broadcasting anything related to evolution. Twenty-seven percent also think that all of the planet’s radioactivity is generated by humans, when in fact 80 percent of radiation to which a person is exposed over the course of their life comes from natural sources, such as cosmic rays and radon gas in the subsoil. Most of the remaining 20 percent is the result of medical tests, such as X-rays, with only 0.01 percent deriving from nuclear plants, according to the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects on Atomic Radiation. This lack of basic scientific knowledge could explain why 54 percent of those surveyed directly reject nuclear energy. The survey, which was carried out by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (Fecyt), also notes that 42 percent of Spaniards are against the cultivation of genetically modified plants. Around 27 percent consider homeopathy “very or fairly scientific,” while 14 percent defend

astrology. At the same time fracking – the controversial technique to extract natural gas from deep underground using a cocktail of chemicals – is rejected by 24 percent of people, compared with 17 percent who see it as a good thing. Almost 43 percent, however, still do not know what fracking is. But there are some positive results, says Fecyt, which comes under the wing of the Economy Ministry. The image of science among Spaniards has improved 12 percent in the last two years. However, it seems that what exactly science is is not altogether clear to everyone. Around 27 percent consider homeopathy as “very or fairly scientific,” rather than a pseudoscience that lacks any scientific proof of its effectiveness. Fourteen percent defend astrology. Presenting the survey, state secretary for research and development Carmen Vela lamented that there were two major gaps in the population: one generational and one genderbased. Young people between the ages of 15 and 24 tend to be those most interested in science – in the 45 to 54 age group the proportion of those interested does not even reach 12 percent. Young people between the ages of 15 and 24 tend to be those most interested in science At the same time, interest in science is double that in men (20 percent) than women (10 percent) – a difference visible across all age groups, including among the youngest segment. “This discrepancy may be a result of the low visibility of women scientists, even at award ceremonies – the proportion of women who win prizes is not even five percent, they are practically absent,” Vela said. The survey shows that people are also demanding more scientific information from the media. Around 60 percent of those consulted say the number of science stories is “insufficient” in print, on radio and on TV. Only digital media meet the demand for scientific information, the survey finds. elpais.com

Simply Wonderful!

Saturday 25th of April will be remembered as the day the when the Orihuela Costa Male Voice Choir hosted the first ever appearance in Spain of the famous Chivenor Branch of the Military Wives Choir, made famous by Gareth Malone on the BBC to the delight of capacity audiences that packed into the venue. The concerts were held at the Ecumenical Centre La Zenia where both choirs absolutely demonstrated their talents and abilities to thoroughly receptive and enthusiastic audiences.

The ladies were greeted with ecstatic applause when they entered, and every number they sang was also rapturously received. The Military Wives choir sang a wide programme featuring well loved songs from both world wars, music they had sung during the making of the television series, plus modern tunes form well known artists. They also spoke openly about the importance and the meaning of the 80 Military Wives Choirs that have been set up as a result of their success. The audiences were totally enchanted by the ladies and loved every minute of their performance.

T h e singing of the Orihuela Costa Male Voice Choir was well summarised by the Military Wives who stated that they were absolutely blown away by the outstanding quality of sound that the men produced. The ladies had no idea what to expect from their hosts but they were overwhelmed by the virtuosity, the professionalism and the wide range of music sang by the men. The concerts concluded with two numbers sung by both choirs that brought the house down. The combined sound of the joint choirs sent shivers down the spine and brought the packed audience to their feet in a well deserved Standing Ovation that lasted for many minutes. The Chivenor Ladies were stunned by the warmth and love shown by the audiences and they stated that they can’t wait to return again to sing with the Orihuela Male Voice Choir. Their one regret is that the visit has been so short. The concerts raised over 4000€ for charity.

About us

Although many Removal firms nowadays claim to be a 'family business' few actually are. This is where we are different. We pride ourselves on giving each individual job (regardless of size) a personal service that is second to none, and in achieving complete customer satisfaction. After all, its our reputation our name - at stake, so we do all we can to maintain our high standards and also meet those of the customer. It's for this reason that a majority of our work is due to recommendation.

Spain and France

We specialise in relocations to and from France and Spain, and often have weekly loads going to both destinations. By combining knowledge of the european laws with local information and years of overseas experience, we have managed to remain as reliable in Europe as we are in England, and consequently have built up a good reputation in both countries. We work closely alongside several english-run storage companies in Spain, allowing us greater flexability with our customers on both sides. All work within our guidelines and adhere to our high standards. We have become one of their top recommended removal companies for moves to and from the UK, and still remain the removal company of choice for many ex-pats.

European Removals

We offer a professional yet personal service to and from most parts of Europe and will gladly tailor make a package to suit your individual needs. We understand that flexability and reliability is of utmost importance to our customers, especially when moving overseas and we aim to cover both areas within the services we offer. Quotations for european moves follow the same protocol as for domestic UK removals (see 'Quotations '). They require an estimator to visit your home (where possible) or can be submitted via 'Online Quotes' . You may wish to email your enquiry to: fredphillipsremovalsltd@ymail.com

Full or Part Loads

The main options to consider in a european move are how big your load is likely to be, and whether you require your belongings on a specific date, or just within a certain timescale. We offer two main services to cover these options: • Full Load - You pay for sole use of the vehicle. Gives you full control (as far as is possible) over the collection and delivery of your belongings, allowing you to work to a specific date. • Part Load - The cost effective option. You have part use of the vehicle along with other loads going via the same route to their desinations. Collection can still be when you require, but delivery is arranged on a full vehicle (cost efficient) basis. However, we will still do our best to work within your time frame. Both services can have storage incorporated into the move, and both offer the same experienced, dedicated customer care service from planning and preperation right through to delivery. 25 years of Hubble The Hubble Space Telescope has celebrated its silver anniversary with a picture featuring a spectacular vista of young stars blazing across a dense cloud of gas and dust. The “Westerlund 2” cluster of stars is located about 20,000 light-years away in the constellation Carina. Hubble was launched on Space Shuttle Discovery on 24 April, 1990. Engineers expect the observatory to keep operating for at least another five years. “Even the most optimistic person to whom you could have spoken back in 1990 couldn’t have predicted the degree to which Hubble would rewrite our astrophysics and planetary science textbooks,” commented Nasa Administrator Charlie Bolden. “A quarter of a century later, Hubble has fundamentally changed

o u r understanding of our Universe and our place in it.” ‘Better with time’ Famously, a flaw was found in the telescope’s primary mirror soon after launch that blurred its images. A smart fix was then installed

by spacewalking astronauts in 1993 that allowed its instruments to correct for the aberration in the reflecting surface. Four further servicing missions later, Hubble is in rude health and technically a far more capable observatory than when it was first put in orbit. No more repair visits by astronauts are planned, but the latest assessment of its likely longevity is very encouraging. In the past, Hubble has suffered from degradation in its six gyroscopes - the spinning devices that allow it to point very precisely at objects on the sky. However, the current batch has experienced just the one failure - in March, 2014. “The instrumentation on Hubble has been getting better with time, in the sense that we’ve been able to calibrate it better and know more about how the observatory is working,” said Ken Sembach, interim deputy director at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore. “It’s also worth noting that two of the instruments repaired on the last servicing mission - the Advanced Camera for Surveys, and the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph - are both working five years hereafter the servicing mission, which is longer than they worked originally with their original electronics. “And so we have great hope that these two instruments, along with the two that were installed - the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph and the Wide Field Camera 3 - will continue to be operational for several more years.” It is difficult to overstate Hubble’s scientific contribution. Before the telescope launched, astronomers did not know whether the Universe was 10 billion years old or 20 billion years old. Hubble’s survey of pulsating stars narrowed the uncertainty, and we now know the age extremely well, at 13.8 billion. The observatory played a part in revealing the accelerating expansion of the cosmos, and provided the definitive evidence for the existence of super-massive black holes at the centre of galaxies - among many, many other discoveries. Some of the eight-metre-class ground-based telescopes can now match - and even exceed -

Genius! This farmer figured out how to use a drone to herd his sheep remotely

You’ve probably seen some pretty crazy and unusual uses for drones before. In the past few years, tinkerers have built everything from pizza delivery drones to aerial lifeguard UAVs — but if you think you’ve seen it all, think again. Feast your eyes on Shep: the world’s first sheep herding drone. Basically, Irish sheep farmer and drone enthusiast Paul Brennan has figured out that an RC quadcopter is incredibly effective for moving sheep from one field to another. Based on the footage in the video above, it appears that the drone’s buzzing scares the bejeezus out of the sheep, and whenever it comes near, the’ll quickly hightail it in the opposite direction. With the right flightpath, Brennan can easily route the herd wherever he wants it to go. This particular setup requires a human pilot for guidance, but it doesn’t take a large stretch of the imagination to see how drones could one day be programmed to herd sheep autonomously. Farmers are already experimenting with using drones for things like monitoring crops and dispensing fertilizers/ insecticides, so animal herding seems like a logical next step. UAV’s probably aren’t going to replace regular ol’ sheepdogs anytime soon, but in the future, aerial shepherding systems that use computer vision and sophisticated herd-moving software could prove more efficient than a pack of trained dogs. Armed with GPS, herding drones could even be dispatched from afar with the push of a button. Forget delivery — drones are going to revolutionize agriculture and farming before anything else. Hubble’s capabilities in certain fields of study. These facilities have pioneered the use of socalled adaptive optics, which allow them to correct for the distortions created by looking through the turbulent atmosphere - something a space telescope like Hubble never has to contend with. Hubble is using the massive galaxy cluster Abell 2744 as a natural zoom lens Where Hubble remains peerless is in going deep, looking far across space - and therefore far back in time - to see the very first structures to form in the Universe. Among the telescope’s greatest contributions are undoubtedly its Deep Field observations, where it has stared at a patch of apparently blank sky for days on end to reveal the presence of thousands of very distant, extremely faint galaxies. The latest iteration of this programme now accounts for the major fraction of telescope time. It is called Frontier Fields, and the project requires Hubble to stare at six huge galaxy clusters. It can use their gravity as a kind zoom lens to see what lies beyond, even further into the distance. Jennifer Lotz, the Frontier Fields lead at STScI, explained: “They act as natural telescopes, magnifying and stretching the light of distant galaxies behind those clusters. And so by combining the power of Hubble and its very deep imaging with these natural telescopes, we really are able to see deeper into the Universe than we would without these foreground clusters.” In so doing, Hubble is now probing objects that are 10-50 times intrinsically fainter than any seen before. The goal is to reach back as far as possible towards the time when the first stars and galaxies were forming, just a few hundred million years after the Big Bang. And this work will neatly hand the baton to its successor - the much bigger James Webb Space Telescope. Due for launch in 2018, JWST is being tuned specifically to investigate this early epoch. And it will do in hours the tasks that currently take Hubble many days to complete.

London airport police to use surveillance drones Police guarding London airports will start using drones for surveillance following a review by counter-terrorism officers. An 18-month analysis by the National Counter Terrorism Policing Headquarters, which helps develop police policy, found the technology could be "transformative". There are an estimated 50,000 drones in the UK Following a successful trial at Gatwick airport over the past year, drones will be given to units guarding Heathrow, Stansted, Luton and City airports. Selected airports in other parts of the UK will also use the technology. The equipment will be rolled out over the next 18 months. It seems police will take responsibility from for investigating the irresponsible or illegal use of drones or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). 'Seven times faster' There are now estimated to be more than 50,000 drones in the UK and the move reflects growing concern over the damage they could cause in the wrong hands. Counter-terrorism officers are

also concerned about the publicity extremists could gain if they flew a flag or banner over a prominent central London location. On Wednesday a drone carrying radioactive material landed on the roof of the Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe's residence. No-one was injured. George Trebess from the National Counter Terrorism Policing Headquarters said it was also possible that drones could be used during major incidents, including sieges or standoffs involving firearms. Speaking to security experts at the Counter Terror Expo in London, he said: "The technology is transformative. "With the new system we will be able to carry out missions around seven times faster than ground-based activity and at around 10% of the cost. We estimate £1.2m would be saved in three years." It is thought the savings would come through having fewer officers patrolling airports on foot. Emma Carr of Big Brother Watch, which campaigns over state surveillance, called for clear information about how police planned to use the drones. She called for a "better understanding of how they're used and who they're being used by". Credit : BBC News

How to Decide Between Cutting Your Hair or Not

So, you've decided that you may want to get a haircut. But are you also worried about the outcome? Unsure if what you have in mind will actually suit you? Make sure before you take the step and cut your hair that you make an informed decision. Determine your face shape. Before you decide on a haircut, get to know your face shape. The shape of your face plays a big role in deciding whether or not you should cut your hair. Some hairstyles and hair lengths look better on certain face shapes. Choosing a haircut based on your face shape can help you avoid drawing attention to the wrong aspects of your face. A haircut that complements your face shape minimizes your negative attributes while emphasizing your beauty Choose just about any style with an oval shape. Oval faces are longer than they are wide, and the forehead and the jaw are the same width. Oval shaped faces can wear just about any hairstyle. If you have an oval face, try a collarbone length bob with side swept bangs. If you want to shorten your oval face, bangs help with that. Go with a sweeping side bang or a blunt bang if you decide to do this. Go for longer hair with beach waves and a center part. Go with a pixie or longer layers for a round face. A round face is circular with the widest point at the cheeks and ears, though the length and width are almost the same. Short hairstyles in a swept-back direction help achieve fullness and can lengthen your face. A pixie cut can downplay the roundness of a round face. For longer styles, try hair that hits your collarbone or shoulders. This helps slim the face. Or try longer hair below the shoulder with long layers. The long layers help keep volume away from your face and help weigh down curls so they’re not bunching at your face. Women with round faces should avoid chin-length hair as it only amplifies the roundness. If you have your heart set on a bob, try wearing the bob in a messy style or have the layers in the front longer and then let it get shorter as you go towards the nape. Round faces look best without bangs, but if you really want bangs, avoid blunt, straight cut ones. Go for side swept bangs instead Go with short or medium hair with a square face. Square faces have strong jawlines and equally strong hairlines. Short or medium-length hair go well with square faces, especially with waves or roundness around the face. Long straight tresses can also draw attention away from a square face. Wispy side-bangs will soften the shape.Shag styles and light feathery layers around the shoulders help soften the squareness. A center part helps open up a square face. You want to avoid heavy, straight bangs with a square face. Wear styles that add width to the jawline with a heart shaped face. A heart shaped face is wide at the temples and narrows to a very delicate chin. Chin-length or longer styles add width to the jaw-line. Uniform layers and curls below the ears help balance out the

thin chin. Styles that emphasize the upper-face should be avoided. Sweeping or heavy bangs also look great with heart shaped faces. Try deep side parts to emphasize your eyes. If you want a pixie cut, go for choppy layers to balance the narrow chin while downplaying the wide forehead. Consider your body type. Your face shape isn’t the only factor that can influence your hair. Your body type also can determine how you cut your hair and what length looks good on you. For slim, straight bodies, go for medium to long hair with bangs and layers. Avoid hair that’s too straight or pixie cuts. Volume helps downplay the slimness. For curvy, full figured bodies, avoid short hair as this can make you look heavier. Also avoid overly long hair since that also can make you look heavy. Go for medium hair with less volume. For petite bodies, go for proportions. Don’t wear your hair too short or too long. For tall, athletic bodies, anything works on your frame. Experiment with hairstyles to find the right one for you. Think about your hair type. Is your hair naturally curly or straight? Is it thick or thin? The texture of your hair influences the way you wear and style it. If you have curly hair, make sure you want a curly short style, otherwise you may end up spending too much time trying to straighten it. Curly hair also shrinks as it dries, so you may need to cut it longer for a short style. Some curly hair that curls at the root doesn’t hold short styles as well as straight hair. If you have thick hair, make sure your stylist thins it enough so that you don’t end up with triangular mushroom hair. Thick, frizzy hair may also not benefits consultancy look good when it’s short Do you suffer from mobility problems, because it can be prone breathlessness/pain or falls/stumbles? to even more frizz. Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer words in as clear a way Bytes. The statement “Microsoft loves as possible. To then Linux” is generally not something you find that I have failed might expects to hear, but that was one of was, to say the least, the messages from Microsoft CEO Satya upsetting! Nadella. That’s a heck of a long way from This got me thinking Steve Ballmer proclaiming back in 2001 about computer users that “Linux is a cancer.” In the years since after buying then, Microsoft certainly attacked Linux who, like it was a cancer with all the enthusiasm an new computer or that their legal department could muster tablet, feel that they have just caught a (and failing abysmally). Microsoft has monster by the tail and don’t know what never been able to buy, manipulate or to do with it! My memory isn’t perfect, but coerce the massive Linux community, and remembering back 36 or more years to my this over the years, has irked our beloved first days of having a P.C., and wondering Uncle Bill as a result. What it does actually what on earth I’d let myself in for, isn’t say is that Microsoft have finally accepted easy. I’m reliably informed that as I get that their dream of world domination (in older, the distant memories will become the computer Operating System market) is nothing more than that, a dream! more vibrant and easier to access and will What has caused Microsoft to make definitely be an advantage :-) I have had a suggestion, put to me, that such a change? Well let’s use that classic detective’s approach: “Follow the money”. may turn out to be very helpful to anyone Microsoft’s CEO said that he’s not having problems understanding their new interested in fighting old battles — ‘Toy’. I’ve been asked by the management especially when, like it or not, Linux has of Jacks Bar In Albox to run an “absolute become a vital part of today’s business beginners” course. The purpose of the technology. “If you don’t jump on the course will be to de-mystify the “magic new,” he said, “you don’t survive.”. There’s box” and return it to it’s rightful place as nothing new about Linux, which now over 21 years old, is old enough to drink and a tool, a ‘means to an end’, because after drive (not at the same time) and have a all, that is all it is! Second, a document or spreadsheet and anything Linux, even on the Azure cloud, is used by else that you are concerned about. Classes businesses large and small. So Microsoft will be limited in size and length (no more must now accept and work with it, or die than 4 people and no longer than an hour) an ignominious death! A Kodak Moment

Remember the good old days when out dining in a restaurant; someone would whip out their 35mm camera and photograph their dinner; then once the film was finished it would be sent off for processing. A few weeks later with the photos back they would then visit their friends’ houses to show them the photos of the dinner they had eaten a while back? I suspect nobody ever did the above, and other diners would have looked on agog if someone had. What we of a certain age do recall though is that sense of excitement and trepidation from using a film camera. Unless using a Kodak Polaroid camera there was no way of knowing how any picture would turn out. The finished roll was posted off in a special envelope or taken down to Boots the Chemists. Only when the fat envelope thudded onto the doormat or was picked up from the processing lab would the results be known. A commercial photographer could get a sneak preview at the lab but for us mere mortals we’d no idea what results would slide out of the envelope. Nowadays it’s all so different and the word ‘Selfie’ has made it

7 things to keep in mind about Spanish wills 1. Do not underestimate the importance of signing one. 2. If you already have one, make sure it complies with new European Directive 650/2012 which comes into force 17th of August. If you are no certain , speak to your solicitor. 3. Make sure it protects the people you care about correctly (second wife versus children from first marriage etc.). For example: if you leave everything to your new wife , she could leave your children out of your estate after you have deceased. It is possible to avoid this risk. 4. Makes sure the will makes maximum use of the exemptions available in each region of Spain. 5. Take into account

that since the sentence of the European court of justice of September of last year the same exemption rates can be claimed by non residents so your existing will may not have taken this into account. 6. Make sensible use of Life Possessions as an instrument to both mitigate inheritance tax and protect spouse versus children from other marriages, while awarding the security of not being left out of their inheritance after your death. 7. Be aware that in some regions of Spain exemption rates have been reduced or abolished during the credit crunch (for example in Murcia Group II heirs ), making it important to reassess your inheritance tax planning.

into the dictionary. Oh, and some people insist on photographing their dinner. Usually there were 24 or 36 frames on a roll of 35mm film; sometimes the number reel on the camera kept going and an extra shot or two could be taken before having to hand wind the film back into its cartridge. Simple pleasures eh! In the early 70s Kodak launched its Instamatic brand using a 120 cartridge which didn’t need rewinding. Coincidentally the 120 cameras were relatively slim line, not unlike the size and shape of many mobile phones today. 120 was a hugely successful format and Kodak only stopped making the cameras in the mid-80s; then the film cartridges a couple of years ago. Smaller niche manufactures have now taken over the reins for the many camera buffs out there. Until around 2000 film cameras were the norm rather than the exception. Then as technology leapt forward the digital era stormed the world of photography. In 2003 Kodak launched the EasyShare camera; it was the first camera to have an AMOLED

display screen, the forerunner to the screens used on many phones and tablets nowadays. Kodak had conducted extensive market research discovering that women especially didn’t like the inconvenience of getting photos printed. So the camera was designed to plug straight into a Kodak printer. But, year later they stopped producing film cameras and laid off 15,000 employees. A sad end as the World’s first commercial digital camera was made by Kodak and sold under the Apple label in 1994. Even earlier in1986, the Kodak boffins created the first megapixel sensor; it was capable of taking a 7x5inch photo with its 1.4 megapixels. Even though their R&D was excellent Kodak’s bosses didn’t believe that digital would ever replace film; though their competitors did. Minolta, Sony, Nikon and Fuji were so much better at exploiting the new technology and making more stylish and importantly cheaper products! Kodak went from being a major player in the digital camera market and having 27% of the market in

1999 to filing for bankruptcy in 2012. What also didn’t help Kodak was that as this century grew up, mobiles and then tablets started to get better cameras attached. People kept the devices that did the most. I wonder what would have happened if a Kodak boffin had added a phone attachment to a camera 25 years ago. Kodak also ceased production of their Kodachrome film in 2010 which was something Kodak execs never thought would happen. Kodachrome was introduced in 1935 and was the first commercially available colour film, responsible for many of the iconic images of the 20th Century. Steve McCurry took this shot in1985 for National Geographic using Kodachrome film, it’s known simply as ‘Afghan Girl!

ARTADIA NAMES 10 FINALISTS FOR INAUGURAL NEW YORK GRANTS

Artadia, a nonprofit that has provided unrestricted grants to artists working in cities across the United States for the past 15 years, today announced the 10 finalists that have been selected for its first-ever New York round. (It has previously presented awards in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, and elsewhere.) Those artists are: Yevgeniya Baras Joe Fyfe Donna Huanca Bill Jenkins Jennie Lee

Eric Mack Sara Magenheimer Park McArthur Kameelah Rasheed Georgia Sagri

The 10 were selected from a little more than 1,000 applicants by a jury that consisted of Matthew Higgs, the director of New York’s White Columns alternative space, Amanda Hunt, a curator at the Studio Museum in Harlem, and Michele Abeles, the artist who currently has a very fetching large-scale photographic work on view in the Meatpacking District, right across from the Whitney Museum, as part of a project initiated by the museum, the High Line, and TF Cornerstone. The winner will be announced in late May, after a showing of work by the finalists at the NADA New York fair. Making the final decision will be Higgs, John Rasmussen, the director of Minneapolis alternative space Midway Contemporary, and Ingrid Schaffner, the senior curator of the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia, who was tapped last month to organize the next Carnegie International. http://www.artnews.com/

Betty Willis, designer of the fabulous Las Vegas sign, dies aged 91 The woman behind the iconic neon sign that has welcomed countless visitors to Las Vegas since 1959 has died

Betty Willis, the woman who designed Las Vegas's iconic neon sign, has died. Her daughter confirmed that Willis died at home in Nevada on Sunday, after a mortuary posted details on its website. Willis was 91 Willis designed the neon sign as part of a tourism boost on the part of Clark County, Nevada. The “fabulous” sign was erected in 1959, and became an instant hit with tourists and locals. “There was no other word to use,” she said in 2008. “Las Vegas was fabulous, and we wanted to advertise that.” • 60 inspiring photographs Willis took inspiration for the shape of her sign from the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company logo, while the starburst at the top was inspired by Disney films, intending to promote happiness. The silver dollars spelling out “welcome” were designed to look lucky. The sign has since become one of the most recognisable

signs in the world, and has been reproduced freely on souvenir merchandise. However, Willis did not copyright the sign, or make any money out of it, saying it was her “gift” to Las Vegas. www. telegraph.co.uk

Francis Bacon self-portraits

rediscovered & expected to fetch £30m Two works bought by private collector soon after they were completed around 40 years ago set to under the hammer at Sotheby's after being rediscovered

Two Francis Bacon self-portraits are going on public display for the first time after they were rediscovered in a private collection. Experts knew of the existence of the works, but had no idea who had bought the paintings soon after they were completed around 40 years ago. Now descendants of the original collector have decided to sell the portraits, which are estimated to fetch £15 million each at auction. They will go on show at Sotheby's in London and New York before going under the hammer in July. Self-Portrait 1975 was painted at the height of Bacon's career, in the period which followed the suicide of his former lover George Dyer in 1971. The triptych Three Studies for Self-Portrait (1980) shows the artist, who was then in his 70s and becoming increasingly haunted by the inevitability of death, with his eyes downcast. Oliver Barker, Sotheby’s senior international specialist in contemporary art, described the find as “a pretty extraordinary collecting moment”. “(Art dealer) Marlborough Fine Art kept a photographic archive and so both of these paintings appeared in a book on Bacon’s selfportraits, but apart from being reproduced in books they’ve not been seen,” he said. “We knew of the existence of the

paintings but simply had no idea where they could be. “The first time I saw these paintings it was such a wonderful awakening. They’re both so luminous.” He said that the works contained a combination of “intoxicating ingredients”. • Melvyn Bragg: My friend Francis Bacon, possessed by devils • ‘Francis Bacon? He was a nice, gossipy sort of man’ • Who’d want to bring home a Francis Bacon? Bacon painted the 1975 selfportrait when he was in his 60s, but looked much younger in the work - obsessed with his physical appearance, he dyed his hair and wore make-up as he grew older. Mr Barker said that the artist deliberately gave “himself film star-style looks, appearing as photogenic as possible while still being highly self critical. “He paints himself with a much more youthful appearance,” he said. He said that the triptych had a “filmic quality”, with “the action unwinding in front of you across three different spaces”, and showed the artist’s “level of psychological angst and questioning”. “Bacon throughout his life was really questioning human existence. Never is that more pivotal in his work than in his selfportraits”, he said. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/

Home Rental Prices Rise in Q1 Following 7 Years of Declines

“The Five Biggest Mistakes to Avoid” when renting out a holiday rental

With a growing number of holidaymakers choosing to take self-catering breaks, the holiday letting sector is a rapidly expanding business area The experts at OwnersDirect.co.uk have the following tips and tricks for owners looking to rent out their holiday home.

Don’t price yourself out of the market

Make sure you research the rental price of comparable properties and alternative accommodation in the area.

The average price of housing for rent in Spain stood at 6.96 euros per square metre per month in the first quarter of the year, representing a 2.8% increase over the previous quarter, and is the first increase registered in a first quarter since 2007, according to data from property portal, fotocasa.es, who believe that prices could be normalising due to the increase in rental prices in Spain and the slight recovery of the sector. During the first quarter, all regions registered increases in rental prices except for: Murcia (-1.1%); La Rioja (-0.9%); Extremadura (-0.8%); Cantabria (-0.7%) and Castilla-La Mancha (-0.2%). In contrast, El Economista reported that the greatest quarterly increases in

rental housing prices were registered in Catalonia (+4.6%), the Balearic Islands (+1.6%), and Asturias, Madrid and Navarra (all with an increase of 1.1%). According to the property portal’s data, the most expensive regions in which to rent a home are the Basque Country (10.07 euros/m2 per month), Catalonia (9.28 euros) and Madrid (9.21 euros), while the least expensive regions for rental housing are Extremadura (4.46 euros/m2 per month), followed by Castilla-La Mancha (4.65 euros) and Murcia (4.78 euros).

Don’t furnish for you

Your property is a business, so keep furnishings simple, avoid clutter and remove personal items. Ensure the property meets health and safety requirements, and consider what practical items guests can expect.

Don’t leave bookings to chance

Having your own website is great, but the competition can be tough. Using a reputable holiday rental website, like OwnersDirect.co.uk, can be a costeffective way to get exposure to millions of travellers and manage booking enquiries. Great photos and truthful

descriptions are vital, as is correct spelling, grammar and punctuation. Selling the dream is important and photos are a great away of doing this.

Don’t scrimp have a local representative

If you don’t live nearby, invest in having someone on hand locally who can ‘meet and greet’ your guests. Having someone to deal with problems immediately, such as a cleaner and handyman, can be invaluable.

Don’t forget to cover yourself

Firstly, ensure you are allowed to let your property on a short-term basis and that you understand applicable taxation laws, as you must declare income earned from holiday lets. You also need holiday rental liability insurance and ideally a booking contract to confirm details of the reservation, deposit/ refund/cancellation policies and terms and conditions of tenancy Source: OwnersDirect.co.uk

Spain House Prices Have Dropped 31.3% Since Start of Crisis

An article published in the latest issue of the British magazine, The Economist, has estimated that housing prices in Spain have fallen by 31.3% since the beginning of the crisis, in the first quarter of 2008, and warns that they are still falling. This decline is the third largest recorded worldwide, among the 26 countries analysed. The report states that although the Spanish economy is once again growing, house prices in Spain are still falling, similar to other European countries like France or Italy, and gives a decline in house prices of 0.2% in the last year. The report also indicates that homes in Spain are still overvalued by between 8% and 18%, and that the housing in Canada, Australia, Belgium and France are much more overvalued with regard to average earnings. According to The Economist´s analysis of the 26 countries around world, Spain is the nation to register the third most significant decline in housing prices since the start of the crisis, behind only Ireland (-37.2%) and Greece (-38.5%).

In addition, the magazine points out that the population of Spain has fallen by 200,000 people in the past year, since many unemployed persons have emigrated in search of work, while in the three years prior to the crisis the population was growing by up to 800,000 people per year. El Mundo reported that of all the countries analysed, those continuing to register decreases year-on-year in housing prices are Spain (-0.2%), France (-2.1%), Italy (-3.8%), Singapore (-3.9%), China (-5.6%) and Greece (-6.1%), while in contrast the countries registering the greatest increases in prices are Ireland (+16.2%), Turkey (+16%), Hong Kong (+11.9%) and Sweden (+8.6%). In terms of the declines registered since the first quarter of 2008, house prices have fallen by -37.2% in Ireland, Greece (-38.5%), Spain (-31.3%), Netherlands (-17.7%), Italy (-16.9%), France (-3.5%), United States (-1.6%) and Japan (-1%). http://news.kyero.com/

Spanish property hotspots

There are a number of property hotspots in Spain to consider right now - in fact, some of them never really cooled off, such as recessionproof Mallorca, still attracting the mega-rich and royalty, and ever fashionable Ibiza, drawing the children of the buyers who discovered it in the Sixties. You can get a two-bed apartment in Mallorca from around €150,000, although you’ll pay a bit more in the charming city of Palma, that is currently reinventing itself as a more user-friendly version of Barcelona. But the Balearics are a low-volume market compared with the mainland Costas, and the current favourites are the Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol. The southern Costa Blanca has so many advantages for property hunters, including a plethora of golf courses near popular towns like Villamartin and Playa Flamenca, and just about the healthiest climate in Europe. Prices vary between the desirable areas and the overbuilt areas but are generally low – two bedroom apartments near the sea from €50,000. In Cabo Roig, to take another popular resort, you might pay €85,000 for a spacious two-bed apartment with a sun terrace. Inland a little, in the village of Algorfa popular with expats, a comparable property will be nearer €70,000. The northern Costa Blanca, less affected by development and with more building restrictions in place, draws buyers to towns including Moraira, Javea, Denia, Calpe and Benissa Costa. In upmarket Moraira, expect to pay €400,000 for a quality three-bed villa with a pool in a

good location but in Benitachell you might get a four or five bedroom villa for €250,000. Inland of these resorts, the Orba and Jalon valleys are increasing in popularity for buyers seeking a more tranquil location than the coastal resorts; and also more bang for their buck. In the Orba Valley you can get a threebed villa with a pool for around €150,000-200,000, or a large restored finca for €450,000. Going south to the Costa del Sol, glitzy Marbella might said to be well and truly booming, with new developments back in vogue and great demand for holiday rentals. You can get an apartment on a complex for €100,000 but a spacious apartment in a good gated community in a sought-after location would be nearer €300,000. Popular areas include Estepona, San Pedro (where our own presenter Laura Hamilton bought in 2012), Nueva Andalusia, Mijas Costa and Benahavis. The Anglo-friendly resort of Benalmadena is popular with tourists and expats and you can get a two-bed apartment there for less than €100,000. The nearby Costa Almeria, a stretch of unspoilt coastline between Murcia and Granada, is not as developed as the Costa del Sol, perhaps not as well-known by the British, yet its fans like the fact its villages retain much of their Spanish identity – it’s the “real Spain” still. Mojacar remains a popular spot, less than one hour’s drive from the airport, and a central location for getting around Almeria as well as a traditional holiday destination - ideal for families and cou-

ples in its own right. You have plenty of choice of one or two-bed apartments with a budget of €100,000; villas range from €200k. A note of caution: there have been a few issues with illegally built homes in the Almanzora Valley (including Albox) – don’t forget your due diligence. In next-door Murcia, Albacete seems to offer a good choice for those seeking an inland base close to an historic city. Fans of Almeria rave about the warm climate there but of course the Canary Islands have the perennial advantage of being the closest winter warmth destination to the UK – and are great for winter sun rentals. British buyers tend to go for either Lanzarote or Tenerife. A threebed villa in Lanzarote will go from just under €200,000, but you can pick up a studio apartment on Tenerife’s Playa de las Americas from €60,000. Of less interest to the masses are the Costa de la Luz for its great Spanish flavour (its frontier towns must not be missed), or the wonderful windsurfing of Tarifa. Or the Costa Brava, a string of beautiful little coastal towns where prices remain comparatively high, with the vibrant city of Barcelona within easy reach. aplaceinthesun.com

AXA RE acquires 381 Santander banking assets in Spain

AXA Real Estate Investment Managers has completed, on behalf of a joint venture between two of its institutional clients, the acquisition of 381 banking assets across Spain for €308 million. The portfolio has been acquired from a third party investor, URO Property Holdings. The 381 assets located throughout Spain total 90,000 sqm and are fully let on 24-26 year leases to Santander, the largest banking company within the country. Predominantly situated in the five major cities of Andalucia, Cataluna, Castilla y Leon, Pais Vasco and Madrid, the remaining assets are in prime locations within the smaller municipal cities. Having been a first mover back into Spain in mid-2013 through the acquisition of a Barcelona office portfolio from Generalitat de Catalunya for €172 million, AXA Real Estate has continued to source and acquire within the Spanish real estate market, notably through the acquisition of the Gran Via retail asset in Madrid last year by a 50/50 joint venture between two clients. AXA Real Estate is also able to execute complex investment

opportunities on behalf of clients by leveraging its strong network of local teams. Hermann Montenegro, Head of Asset Management & Transactions, Spain, at AXA Real Estate, commented: “This latest acquisition underpins AXA Real Estate’s conviction in the Spanish real estate market, having purchased what we believe to be a portfolio offering significant value let on a long lease to Santander. As further testament to AXA Real Estate’s ability to utilise its local teams, the portfolio spans the entire country, providing our clients with exposure in both the major cities, as well as the regions. property-magazine.eu

Does Your Bank In Spain Have A Copy Of Your ID?

PROPERTY supplement

Home Sweet Home Property Services CALL 950 121 936

EMAIL: SALES@SOLTIMES.COM

Your account could be frozen if your bank in Spain doesn’t have a copy of your passport before the end of April. To comply with five-year old regulations on moneylaundering Spanish banks are scrambling to get copies of ID documents for all their clients before the end of this month. As El Pais In English in explains: “April 30 marks the deadline for banks to collect and digitalize upto-date identification documents for all account holders, as per existing legislation. For Spaniards, this means the DNI national identity card; for foreign residents, their residency card or passport.” Banks are obliged to contact customers where ID documents are lacking, so you should be able to assume all is well if you haven’t heard from your bank. But what if your bank doesn’t have your correct contact details, as is known to happen? If your bank can’t reach you, and doesn’t have a copy of your ID on record, your account will be frozen on the 1st of May. That could be a pain for property owners relying on standing orders to make regular payments like community fees and mortgage repayments. Accounts will be reactivated once ID is provided, but if three months pass by without ID, accounts

become known as cuentas de orden, which are harder to reactivate, and recover money from them. “Some sources talk about more than five million clients without an up-to-date ID document, although banking associations refute this figure,” says El Pais. Banks like Santander allow clients to scan and email a copy of their ID document, so it is not necessary to visit Spain. If you have a bank account in Spain it might be a good idea to check your bank has a copy of your ID on record http://www.spanishpropertyinsight.com/.

Oil price hovers at four-month high

The price of oil is hovering at a fourand-a-half month high amid concerns over disruption to supplies from the Middle East.

Brent crude oil is at $65.37 per barrel and has gained around $9 since March.

A slowdown in US shale oil production and the conflict in Yemen have been cited as the main reasons for the rise in the oil price in recent weeks.

Analysts at Barclays bank cautioned against undue optimism over oil prices, which are still $50 per barrel below their previous high of $115 per barrel last August.

It comes as BP, Shell and Exxon Mobil are expected to report sharp falls in first quarter earnings this week.

“Sustaining the recent oil price rally requires firmer demand and a tangible supply response,” they said in a note.

Michael Hewson, chief market a n a l y s t at CMC Markets, said: “Overall we are in an upwards trend and we do appear to have found a short-term base. There’s a good chance we could see $70 a barrel [for Brent] over the course of the next month or so.”

“The cart is moving ahead of the horse, and we take a cautious view on further price appreciation over the near term.”Separately, UK government officials warned off any potential suitor for BP ahead of the release of its first quarter results on Tuesday.

A senior City source was quoted by the Financial Times newspaper as saying the government “would make their opposition so clear that any foreign bidder would be deterred from actually making a bid.” A poor set of results might make BP vulnerable to a takeover from one of its rivals. But the final bill for the Gulf of Mexico oil spill off the US coast in 2010 and the firm’s exposure to Russia through its Rosneft business could deter would-be suitors. Earlier this month Royal Dutch Shell and BG Group announced a £4.7bn merger. Should it receive regulatory approval the deal would be one of the biggest of 2015 and could produce a company with a value of more than £200bn. bbc.com

Matas of the Sierra

We will leave the ‘tranquil’ whitewashed streets of Alqueria for a moment and venture into the Sierra Alhamilla. The dramatic landscape peculiar to this part of Spain offers a unique opportunity for those who seek solitude. Solitude to meditate, solitude to avoid detection or perhaps simply seeking solitude out of an acute sense of stupidity. For Galeno Matas solitude was a combination of all these things. He had time enough to dwell on the injustice of living rough in the hills while his political opponents lived off ‘the fat of the land’ in Alqueria. Matas, still believing the Civil War to be raging hid from his imaginary enemy. He saw Franco’s troops behind every rock. Matas spent his days dodging his insubstantial adversaries, foraging for food and maintaining his ageing arsenal of weapons. What he would do if he came face to face with these erstwhile belligerents he wasn’t quite sure, something heroic no doubt. Matas still does his bit for Spain’s defunct Second Republic. Every fourteenth of April, the day the Republic was proclaimed in 1931, Matas fires a shot at the gable-end of Alqueria’s church. The church because of all the evil it represented to Republicans, also because it was the only ruddy thing big enough for him to hit and still remain undercover. The ancient projectile would cause a little ‘pock’ mark to appear and a puff of whitewash to momentarily materialise as it harmlessly struck the wall. Womenfolk of the Village would gather on every fifteenth of April below the

viewpoint

gable-end and stare in wonder at the new pock mark. It was surely a divine sign and offerings in the form of bread, cheese, jamón and wine were duly prepared. Just why these worthy ladies thought that an absolute being would make his presence known in such a fashion is a mystery. They marched in a solemn line-ahead to the Village’s shrine north of Alqueria. With prayers and many gesticulations they placed their offerings at the foot of the rough stone cross. On every sixteenth of April Matas would scramble down from the cave he called home. Making his way from tree to tree, from rock to rock, carefully, head low he would sprint to the stone cross. There he would find the ‘banquet’ left by the villagers. Surely he thought this was a sign that the Village was still loyal to the Republic. Matas appreciated their supply of rations, especially the Remitroot Wine of which he was very fond. He only wished it would happen more than once a year.

By the Light of the Silvery Moon The full moon shone down serenely on the somnolent village. I was sleeping the sleep of a clear conscience and a blameless life, when in an instant I was awake – a fully functioning, all senses alert kind of awake. I can sleep through all kinds of cacophony; thunder, lightning, hellfire, brimstone, football, but a tiny noise that should not be happening will rouse me immediately from the very depth of slumber, and I was the kind of awake that signified that Something Was Not Right. I listened to the all-encompassing silence, and then I heard it – peenkpeenk, the sound of a mobile phone in need of feeding. I looked at the clock – 2.45. I can’t listen to that all night, I shall have to get up and do something about it, I thought with an added expletive. The moon was so bright that I entered the living room torchless. I located the phone, checked its pulse and rummaged round for its charger. Better check Pete’s phone, I thought, and lo and behold! That too was empty. Now I had 2 dead phones with 2 chargers, but only one socket in the living room. No problem, I plugged one in in the living room and took the other one into the kitchen to plug in. As I entered the kitchen I was besieged by an army of cats. Actually it was 2 cats, but the speed and persistence with which they entwined themselves around my legs in the half-dark, and their vociferous mewing gave a lie to their actual numbers. Good, they were saying, breakfast is really early

By Jos Biggs

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk today! Somehow I made it without tripping or treading on a cat to the socket, plugged the phone in and endeavoured to leave the kitchen. By now the dog had decided that the cats were right, and breakfast was really early, and the best place for her to be was in the kitchen. She leapt and wriggled and squirmed around me with delight, while the cats darted sinuously around my legs. I stood in the gloaming, marooned in a broiling sea of animals, unable to safely proceed forward or backward. There was nothing for it, moonlight may be very romantic, but I needed electricity! I pushed the switch, and the menagerie was revealed. ‘Go back to bed, all of you!’ I commanded as I pushed through their seething masses. They returned quickly to their beds and their slumbers. But me, I was Awake, with a capital A!

The importance of Spanish wines in Spain

If you had to determine a national drink for Spain, no doubt it would be Spanish wines. Spending a warm summer night drinking wine and eating tapas in a square is one of the most typical pictures of life in Spain. Used for cooking, drinking and even to throw over people (like the wine festivities in Jumilla), wine is ever present in the Spanish day to day, and occupies an important part of the country’s production and exportation. Spanish Wine Spain’s unique geography and situation are responsible for the wide range of climates available throughout the country which give rise to a large number of different grape varieties which can be cultivated there. Vineyards stretch from the green, rolling hills of the north to the arid expanses of the south, and all the differences between them, from weather to the richness of the soil and the water, are what makes Spanish wines so special and unique. The influence of the Cantabric Sea, Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea play a very important role in the ripening of the fruit, and even the breezes blowing from them contribute to the differences between Spanish wines. The wine culture in Spain generated its own form of tourism, which takes oenophiles to wineries and vineyards to taste the best Spanish wines and learn more about them. It’s a pleasure for all the senses: taste and smell are delighted by the delicate flavors and aromas of the wine, while the idyllic landscape of the vineyards are a feast for the eyes. Wine has been so important in Spain throughout the centuries, primarily serving as a strong economic engine, that getting to know the Spanish wines through this type of tourism provides a very special insight and understanding of the Spanish culture. Spending a whole summer in Spain traveling around the different wines regions is a nice way of familiarizing yourself with Spain’s geography. Tourism is one of the main economic motors in Spain. The great climate and the multiple beaches attract millions of people all year round, but especially in summer. Whether you’re coming to learn Spanish in Spain, drink spectacular wines and eat the amazing Spanish cuisine, or just to learn more about Spanish culture and traditions, you’ll find a place for you in this varied country. Nowadays, not only is wine in Spain a great industry, but wine tourism too isbecoming ever more popular with locals and foreigner alike.

Nearly 3 million acres in Spain are used to plant grapes for the production of Spanish wine. This makes it the country with the largest surface percentage dedicated to wine cultivation, even though it’s only the third world producer (after France and Italy). Spanish wines are a big part of the total production in Spain, generating around 5000 million euros per year. Spanish wine is highly valued among international wine connoisseurs for its almost infinite variations and excellent quality. For a long time, Spanish wine has been shadowed by the more popular French and Italian wines, but in the last years there has been a definite growth in the exportation of this drink, especially to the US, the UK and Germany: During the first two months of 2011, there was a 40% increase in the volume of exportations, which is a clear marker of the growing popularity of Spanish wines.

The 10 Healthiest Foods on the Planet These 10 superfoods are proven, expert-beloved disease fighters and energy boosters. Add them to your meals and get on the fast track to a healthier body. 1: Lemons Just one lemon has more than 100 percent of your daily intake of vitamin C, which may help increase "good" HDL cholesterol levels and strengthen bones. Citrus flavonoids found in lemons may help inhibit the growth of cancer cells and act as an antiinflammatory. Quick Tip: Add a slice of lemon to your green tea. One study found that citrus increases your body's ability to absorb the antioxidants in the tea by about 80 percent. 2: Broccoli One medium stalk of broccoli contains more than 100 percent of your daily vitamin K requirement and almost 200 percent of your recommended daily dose of vitamin C — two essential bone-building nutrients. The same serving also helps stave off numerous cancers. Quick Tip: Zap it! Preserve up to 90 percent of broccoli's vitamin C by microwaving. (Steaming or boiling holds on to just 66 percent of the nutrient.) 3: Dark Chocolate Just one-fourth of an ounce daily can reduce blood pressure in otherwise healthy individuals. Cocoa powder is rich in flavonoids, antioxidants shown to reduce "bad" LDL cholesterol and increase "good" HDL levels. Quick Tip: A dark chocolate bar contains about 53.5 milligrams of flavonoids; a milk chocolate bar has fewer than 14. 4: Potatoes One red potato contains 66 micrograms of cell-building folate — about the same amount found in one cup of spinach or broccoli. One sweet potato has almost eight times the amount of cancer-fighting and immune-boosting vitamin A you need daily. Quick Tip: Let your potato cool before eating. Research shows that doing so can help you burn close to 25 percent more fat after a meal, thanks to a fat-resistant starch. 5: Salmon A great source of omega-3 fatty acids, which have been linked to a reduced risk of depression, heart disease, and cancer. A 3-ounce serving contains almost 50 percent of your daily dose of niacin, which may protect against Alzheimer's disease and memory loss. Quick Tip: Opt for wild over farm-raised, which contains 16 times as much toxic polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) as wild salmon.

6: Walnuts Contain the most omega-3 fatty acids, which may help reduce cholesterol, of all nuts. Omega-3s have been shown to improve mood and fight cancer; they may protect against sun damage, too (but don't skip the SPF!). Quick Tip: Eat a few for dessert: The antioxidant melatonin, found in walnuts, helps to regulate sleep. 7: Avocados Rich in healthy, satisfying fats proven in one study to lower cholesterol by about 22 percent. One has more than half the fiber and 40 percent of the folate you need daily, which may reduce your risk of heart disease. Quick Tip: Adding it to your salad can increase the absorption of key nutrients like beta-carotene by three to five times compared with salads without this superfood. 8: Garlic Garlic is a powerful disease fighter that can inhibit the growth of bacteria, including E. coli. Allicin, a compound found in garlic, works as a potent anti-inflammatory and has been shown to help lower cholesterol and blood-pressure levels. Quick Tip: Crushed fresh garlic releases the most allicin. Just don't overcook; garlic exposed to high heat for more than 10 minutes loses important nutrients. 9: Spinach Spinach contains lutein and zeaxanthin, two immune-boosting antioxidants important for eye health. Recent research found that among cancer-fighting fruits and veggies, spinach is one of the most effective. Quick Tip: Spinach is a healthy — and flavorless — addition to any smoothie. You won't taste it, we promise! Try blending 1 cup spinach, 1 cup grated carrots, 1 banana, 1 cup apple juice, and ice. 10: Beans Eating a serving of legumes (beans, peas, and lentils) four times a week can lower your risk of heart disease by 22 percent. That same habit may also reduce your risk of breast cancer. Quick Tip: The darker the bean, the more antioxidants it contains. One study found that black bean hulls contain 40 times the amount of antioxidants found in white bean hulls. Credit: fitnessmagazine.com

The Mar Menor is a huge (135 square kilometres) salt-water lagoon, separated from the Mediterranean by the 24 kilometre long La Manga del Mar Menor (The Strip). The average depth of the Mar Menor is four metres and at its maximum it is seven metres which means that the seabed slopes very gradually and you have to get several hundred metres in before the water is of any depth. The mineral-rich waters are said to have therapeutic effects and because of this the area has a significant spa tourism industry. The sludge in the salt pans is also credited with beneficial effects on the health, so there are often dozens of mud people wallowing in it at any one time. Playa Paraiso beach on a summer

Another severely neglected mare rescued from a Granada breeding yard by the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre has given birth to a healthy foal. The birth on April 6 came just a week after a second mare from the same rescue operation also gave birth to a healthy colt. Visitors can meet both foals when the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre holds its free monthly open day. The next one is Sunday, May 3.

It is believed the owner of the horses had the excuse that it was due to Spain’s ongoing financial crisis that caused him to stop feeding them. P o l i c e prosecuted and a court order legally handed the animals over to the non-profit groups.

What a difference in Church Worship! Here we are at the Anglican Cathedral in Arusha, Northern Tanzania, where the several hundred attending the English language Communion Service (there were even more at the preceding Service in Swahili) are so enthusiastic. They clearly enjoy going to Church, and their only complaint seems to be that the 2½ hours allocated was insufficient! And it’s not just the uneducated who are so passionate about their faith. For the congregation includes a high proportion of professionals:- Doctors, Lawyers, Teachers, University Professors, Research Scientists, Engineers and many others, from both Private and Public Sectors, indigenous and ex patriots, all equally confident of the reality of God, whose love and power is so evident all around. For it is, I’m assured many times, nigh on impossible for any thinking person to be atheist in this environment. How different in our community, where we live in a cosseted, almost sterile and false environment. We experience so little of the raw power of nature, see so little of the abundant variety of wildlife, constantly threatened by human activity, that’s always visible in Africa. We live as though it’s humanity alone that

controls our destiny, so remain blind to the evidence of God at work, oblivious to the many tokens of His love that surround us. So our worship, where it exists at all, tends to be similarly restrained, with little spontaneity. Church, for so many, is there as an emergency service, to be used when all else fails; rather than as a commitment to regular worship. We perhaps check details of services on the web, but never find time or reason to make the effort to attend, as more pressing needs take priority. Yet this is the God who, to restore our relationship with Him, gave his all for us; suffering and dying in our place, promising that, in due time we, like Jesus before us, will be physically raised to spend eternity with Him. Now doesn’t that prospect warrant a little more worship in the here and now? Details of a number of English Language Churches are given in Sol Noticeboard for any wishing to Worship, whilst additionally, further information about the Anglican Church in this area may be seen on the web site www.mojacarchurch.org .Duncan Burr is Licensed Lay Reader for the Anglican Chaplaincy of Costa Almeria and Costa Cálida and may be contacted at djburr@ avired.com

Blur your garden's boundaries by planting various plants and shrubs close together without gaps, not only will it create a stunning backdrop, it will automatically make the space look larger and well established. Clematis is a great climber and rambling roses will bring you colourful blooms, but also consider trees and bushes. When planning where to put everything, aim to have the tallest plants at the back and work down to smaller pots at the front.

The weakness in numbers did not affect how the visitors played, Leo Messi had a one-on-one with the goalkeeper and could have scored the third but he hit the woodwork. Strong start to supermoto season

The Supermoto racing brothers from Murcia have had a busy start to their 2015 race season. It all kicked off in March at the first round of the Spanish championship at Albaida in Valencia. Last year’s season ended in a career threatening injury for Anthony FordDunn when he crashed and badly broke his arm. After an operation to pin and plate the break and the winter spent rehabilitating Anthony decided to race in the SM road class for 2015 to allow his arm to strengthen properly before re-entering the SM open class in 2016, where the off road and jump sections are included. With the decision made to contest the road racing Supermoto class, Anthony showed that he had lost none of his skills or determination to win, and immediately set pole position, followed by two wins in both his races. He didn’t stop there, as he has also competed in the Catalan SM road championship and after 2 rounds he has 3 wins and a 2nd place to his name and a commanding championship lead. Older Brother Mat Ford-Dunn also walked away from last year’s race in Albaida with a broken collar bone, just an hour after Anthony had broken his arm. It was a bad day for the Supermotoland team, but he still had a shot at the SM master 35 championship title for 2014 and used the 6 weeks between races to heal before coming back at the final round of the championship in Alcarras, Catalunya, to fight for the championship title. The pressure was on, as Mat had not even sat on the bike in the 6 weeks since his injury but in a determined effort he set pole position and then a d o m i n a n t double race victory to make him the SM Master 35 champion of Spain for the second year running.

won by Drew Sykes with Tony Clarke, the runner up. The highest scores in both contests were rewarded with This year Wooden Spoons presented by Doreen has seen Mat Hibbs, a long standing Member, to Ina step up to the Bourdon and David Sykes father of the men´s winner. The golf was followed by a lunch in the restaurant which was enjoyed judging by the busy hum of conversation, reflecting the very friendly nature of these events. The competition was organised by Doreen Sykes founder member of the Friendship Club which is open to all to join in the fun of the monthly events for more information ring the Help office on 968 570 059.

premier SM Open class and he has wasted no time in finding the extra speed needed to be competitive. With a solid start at Albaida Mat scored 5-55 in his three races to give him 5th overall on the day and just one point short of 4th position. Mat was running as high as 3rd in one of his races but a couple of small crashes knocked him back. The Catalan championship has also seen Mat at his best with a surprising 3rd overall at the first round of the championship and after two rounds he now holds 5th position. For 2015 the Supermotoland team that is sponsored by Murcia based International removals company ‘Advance Moves’ has a new member of the team, in the form of Mats 14 year old son Loris Ford-Dunn, Loris has been learning the ropes in the Youth classes and with limited time on his bike he has started to make good progress. The Supermotoland team next race at Villena in Alicante on Sunday 3rd May for the second round of the Spanish Supermoto championship. The race action all starts at 10.00 hrs and finishes at 15.00 hrs so be sure to be there on time to see some fantastic racing. More information on the forth coming race can be found at www. supermotoland.com or the circuits website at www.chicharrakarts.es
