Restriction on numbers of carrier bags for consumers
NEW European Union rules could reduce the numbers of plastic carrier bags used in member States even further, according to a report by Eroski Consumer, part of the Spain-wide supermarket chain which originated in the Basque Country.
The directive of April 29, number 2015/720, says the 28 countries must either reduce the number of carrier bags each person is allowed to take home from the supermarket, or limit the number given out without charge. In Spain, supermarkets already charge a small fee for carrier bags, ranging from two to 10 cents, depending upon the size. This means it would be obliged to restrict carrier bag sales, aiming for a maximum of 90 per person by the end of 2019 in total, or 40 at most by the end of this year. For countries other than Spain, where bags are free of charge at the till, they must cease to be so by December 21, 2018. The full EU Directive must be incorporated into national law by
November 27, 2016. Carrier bag recycling remains very low in the EU and use of them varies dramatically from country to country, depending upon consumers’ attitudes to them. Many use them as rubbish bags instead of buying separate bin liners, meaning they would have to be swapped for plastic sacks and the saving in amounts of plastic damaging the environment would therefore be minimal, or even nonexistent. Some bags are already made with biodegradable materials hypermarket chain Carrefour uses potato fibre to make its own bags. A ‘common methodology’ for measuring how many are used per person will be developed by Brussels, as well as further information campaigns given that recent ones have led to lower carrier bag consumption. thinkspain.com

Pilgrims honour the Virgin of El Rocío
One tiny village in the Andalusian province of Almonte has once again become the epicentre of the annual Rocío pilgrimage, with all 116 confraternities having made their way there to honour the Virgin of the Rocío. All week, the pilgrims have been travelling the hundreds of kilometres from Seville, Huelva and Cadiz on horseback or in horse-drawn carriages, to reach this unique destination, nestling on the edge of the Doñana national park. This year’s romería or pilgrimage began on May 14th, when the Hermandad de Córdoba, one of the oldest Rocío confraternities set off on its annual trek. The romería as such begins on the Sunday before Pentecost, however, pilgrims come from throughout Andalusia (and, nowadays, from throughout Spain and beyond), with many considering this travel as the most important part of the pilgrimage. The pilgrims travel in groups known as religious confraternities. They come from many directions: the Camino de los Llanos (Plains Way) from Almonte proper; the Moguer Way, from Moguer and Huelva; the
Sanlúcar Way from Cádiz, crossing the River Guadalquivir at El Bajo de Guía; and the Seville Way. From noon on Saturday until nearly midnight each confraternity travels from their property in the village of El Rocío to the Sanctuary where they present their “Simpicado” the copy of the Virgen, the oldest confraternities going first. Each bears an emblem of the Virgen del Rocío (Holy Mother). At midnight, it is the turn of the original confraternity to carry their emblem to the shrine. This is known as the Almonte Rosary ceremony. At 10am on Whitsun Sunday, a Pontifical High Mass is said in El Real del Rocío (next to the Sanctuary), where the Virgin was crowned in 1919. On Sunday night, everyone prays the Rosary by candlelight, as each confraternity goes up to the flat of El Eucaliptal next to El Real del Rocío. Finally, the Immaculate Conception Emblem of Almonte is brought to the Shrine, at which point the Almontese carry the Virgin of El Rocío out into the village streets, to be met with devotion and reverence, followed by traditional dancing and singing.

TV NEWSLETTER
june 2015
ort Firstly apologies for no TV News in May but as many readers are aware I was in hospital for the publishing deadline – severe chest infection – but all is well now – nothing but praise for all the staff and facilities at Hospital Santa Lucia in Cartagena – I even found the food quite acceptable even if the salt free diet took some getting used to. Thanks to all friends who looked after house garden and pets during my stay – the dogs were really pleased to have me return ! Apart from that all is well at the Rainbow House although the May temperatures into the 30’s have meant an early start to the daily watering ! Mum Monk has also been in hospital in Plymouth but is also now out and at her superb care home – Greenacres. TV News ............. The main TV news has to be the further weakening of the satellite TV signals during May – there was not and have not been any announcements to this effect but the signals are definitely reduced ....... that is on top of the reductions we always see as the air temperature warms up in the summer. Down on the furthest points south and towards the west – Puerto de Mazarron being notable – 1.35 dishes are barely pulling on the mainstream FREESAT signals (BBC/ITV/4/5) and even the 1.45’s are often struggling – being right on the edge of enough signal for a picture it can even be critical where you live in a location – just a 100m separation can make a difference between watching TV or not. It is also critical to have the best equipment in perfect order – two identical looking installations can have reception or not simply due to the equipment tolerances in manufacture and the differences in signals over just a short distance. So you have lost UK TV or you are thinking of installing it – what do you do ? The first and most critical choice is that of an experienced competent installer ! There are many about but there are also some not so good – ask friends and neighbours who they use – don’t just be led by a “glossy” advert ! Next , and it really does depend on location , get the biggest dish installed you can or go for internet TV. Dish wise you really do need a 1.80 Portuguese prime focus dish with a decent LNB , decent cable and a digibox with an A1 tuner ........ especially the further south and west you live – heading
north and east you may get away with a smaller dish but this is where the experienced installer will advise you. It will also depend on your viewing requirements – FREESAT or SKY – and whilst many of the SKY channels have a stronger signal at the time of writing the new “G” satellite is being tested and is rumoured to be eventually taking most of the SKY transmissions with new signal strengths similar to the existing FREESAT ones or even weaker – may be an issue to view SKY and those SPORTS channels. With all that uncertainty and the HUGE dishes needed it really is time to consider internet TV – this does not require any satellite dish but does need good internet. This has been a problem in Spain in the past but is rapidly improving with most providers now supporting internet TV. The downside is probably that all easy use no computer in the circuit TV will carry a subscription but this can be very reasonable with a good channel selection and the bonus of such things as movie packs .There are various “trade” tricks to make internet TV an acceptable way to view so again use your installer for best advice ........ also ensure you get either a trial period or a money back offer if your internet proves to be unreliable for TV. Finally if you are new to Spain and just buying a property and UK TV is important to you – it is not all sunshine and outdoor living ! – winters are chilly dark evenings ! – just ensure a UK TV installation will be possible at the property by either installing a HUGE dish or by having good reliable internet available. Spain’s ruling PP gets worst local election result in 20 years
Spain’s ruling People’s Party (PP) took a battering in regional and local elections on Sunday after voters punished Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy for four years of severe spending cuts and a string of corruption scandals. In a test of the national mood ahead of general elections expected in November, the PP suffered its worst result in more than 20 years to herald an uncertain era of coalition as new parties rose to fragment the vote. Spaniards rejected the stability offered by the PP and rival Socialists which have alternated in power since the end of dictatorship 40 years ago and opted for change in the shape of new parties - market-friendly Ciudadanos (‘Citizens’) and anti-austerity Podemos (‘We Can’). Rajoy’s future looked bleak as his strategy to bet on an accelerating economic rebound to win a second term later this year was seriously undermined by his party’s poor showing. “It’s a drubbing for the PP. The fear factor did not come into play and people voted for Podemos and Ciudadanos,” said Jose Pablo Ferrandiz of leading pollster Metroscopia. Although the PP got more votes than any other party, it and the rival Socialists fell short of overall majorities in most areas. The two parties will have to negotiate coalitions with minority parties in the 13 of Spain’s 17 regions that voted on Sunday alongside more than 8,000 towns and cities. Spain has virtually no tradition of compromise politics and the fragmented vote is likely to result in weeks of pact-building in the regions which hold substantial devolved power and determine spending in key areas like education and health. “Market sentiment towards Spain may be favourable but the political scene is becoming a lot more fragmented, boding ill for the formation of a stable and strong government after the parliamentary vote later this year,” said Nicholas Spiro, analyst at Spiro Sovereign
Strategy. The PP got its worst result in countrywide municipal elections since 1991 and lost its absolute majority in regional bastions Madrid and Valencia, where potential left-wing coalitions could send the party into opposition for the first time in 20 years. “I used to vote for the PP but they are burnt out, they have been in power for too long. It’s time to clean the slate,” said Nacho, a 56-year-old doctor in Valencia who voted for Ciudadanos. At the PP headquarters in Valencia, dozens of shell-shocked supporters, many of them young activists, fought back tears as they received the news their party would also likely lose control of the city to a left-wing coalition. In Madrid city, where there has been a PP mayor since 1991, Rajoy’s party marginally beat a leftist platform backed by Podemos and headed by 71-year-old retired judge Manuela Carmena. But there as well the Podemosbacked alliance is likely to team up with the Socialists to win power. Podemos, often compared to Greek radical left party Syriza, had toned down its policies in recent weeks, scrapping more extreme ideas like defaulting on the national debt. “It’s time for total change,” said 31-yearold teacher Natalia Cendejas in Madrid’s old quarter, Lavapies, where immigrants and the working class rub shoulders with bohemians and tourists. In Barcelona, another left-wing coalition headed by former community activist Ada Colau and backed by Podemos beat proindependence parties Convergencia i Unio (CiU) and Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC), in a setback for the Catalan separatist movement. “The people have won here, not a bunch of initials,” Colau said to cheering supporters, referring to the scramble of initials representing traditional Spanish political parties.

Buyer of the $179.4 Million Picasso Revealed

May 2015
Unnamed art world sources have told the New York Post that the mystery buyer of Pablo Picasso’s Les Femme d’Algers (Version “O”) is the former Qatari Prime Minister Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani. Al Thani bought the piece for $179.4 million on May 11 in a record setting purchase of the most expensive work ever sold at an auction Pablo Picasso, Les Femme d’Algers (Version “O”), 1955. The concepts aren’t exactly universal, but they encapsulate a broad range of methods for approaching a design problem, Lupton said. One example she points to are diagonals. Victorian-era posters largely used centered type, which dragged down the overall layout. Then modern designers made a simple, but surprisingly effective change, using diagonal lines and compositions to create depth, motion, and direct the viewer’s eyes. A Spanish Civil War poster, for example, designed by José Bardasano Baos features a giant glass of water canted at a diagonal. (The poster promotes the democratically When most museums put on poster exhibits, they elected government's success tend to walk viewers through the histories of different in improving public hygiene in artistic styles, ranging from Art Nouveau to Bauhaus. The museum’s veteran senior curator of contemporary design, Ellen Lupton, aimed to host a non-traditional but accessible exhibition explaining the principles of visual communications that designers use to create posters in the first place. How Posters Work is gem of a show that gives visitors an opportunity to learn the logic behind the format. plane. The designer created dynamism in the poster but ignored the laws of gravity!” Digging through the Cooper Hewitt’s collection, Lupton discovered lost treasures, like a pair of World War II posters published by the U.S. Office of War Information. Both posters sought to discourage soldiers and civilians from idle talk about troop movements, because such chatter could fall into enemy hands and cause Allied ships to sink. One poster offers a more detailed narrative of a sinking ship, while the other uses a single, striking image of a sailor about to drown, with just the headline “Someone talked!” It’s works like these that prove the value of posters in a design context—but that also crystallize the format’s place in the history of commercial, political, and public life. http://www.theatlantic.com

Torrevieja Costa Lions Ultimate Recycling visit
Following the demise of the Torrevieja Costa Lions Club earlier this year, former Club Presidents Iain and Janette Bennett have been spending time winding down Club commitments. The latest event was to uplift over 2500 pairs of used spectacles from Specsavers Torrevieja and Specsavers Guardamar del Segura for onward delivery to the Lions Club spectacles recycling centre at San Vicente del Raspieg near Alicante. The Lions association with Specsavers Torrevieja goes back to when the store first opened many years ago and to date over 14,500 pairs of spectacles have been collected there for recycling. Last year on the initiative of then Lion President Janette, Specsavers Spanish stores located in Guardamar, Benidorm, Fuengirola, Marbella, Santa Ponsa, Javea and Calpe joined Torrevieja in collecting used spectacles on behalf of the Lions and have recently announced that these stores have together collected a further 3,000 pairs this year already. Iain and Janette delivered the spectacles on Wednesday morning. The lenses will now be graded according to type, single vision, bi focal. varifocal etc. The lenses are then sterilised and fitted in new frames ready for shipment to third world countries where eye care is not provided and aids to vision are not as readily available for those who most need them. In countries where no eye care is provided Lions Clubs International provide clinics and opticians and where

glasses are required those Lions eye specialists then place orders with the numerous recycling centres worldwide, including Alicante, for onward delivery to those most in need. A couple of years ago a nine year old boy in Madagascar was provided with a pair of spectacles which ,it was discovered originated in the Alicante centre so there is a remote possibilty that they may have been collected by Specsavers in Torrevieja. The glasses completely changed the boys’ life by giving him better vision, he was also able to learn to read and write at school so with improved sight and education his life prospects have improved immensely. The recycling centre at Alicante processes around 70,000 pairs of spectacles per annum from all over Spain, so the massive contribution by the local Lions in collaboration with Specsavers has been tremendous. Specsavers Torrevieja along with all the other Specsavers stores in Spain will continue to be a collecting point for used spectacles, so any readers who have old specs lying in a drawer somewhere, get down to your local Specsavers and hand them in, you could dramatically improve someones life by doing so. The Lions will ask that the Torrevieja Suomi Lions Club take over collection and delivery from Specsavers. You can read more about Sight First and spectacle recycling by visiting www.torreviejacostalions.org or www. lionsclubs.org

Using Wall Mirrors to Decorate Your Home Using Wall Mirrors to Decorate Your Home
be. In an artsy room, the busier both are, the better. Frame size is also important. Like a work of art, a mirror shouldn’t be wider than the furniture below it nor less than two-thirds the width. If a mirror is too narrow to adequately fill the wall space, add paintings or sconces on either side. For more drama, hang a mirror vertically above a chest or console. Large wall mirrors — especially long, vertical mirrors — can hang alone, without furniture beneath them. Medium-sized mirrors look more important if you group them with framed art, porcelain plates, or figurines and hang them above a dresser, chest, or table. You can group a collection of tiny mirrors — especially those with inventive frames — as you would a collection of paintings. Frameless mirrors for a different look to your decor Modern-style wall-hung mirrors may have no frame at all. Less expensive mirrors without frames, wall-to-wall mirrors, and do-it-yourself mirror tiles and panels are available with plain or beveled edges. Beveled-edged mirrors are heavier, more substantial looking, and work well in Traditional interiors. Plain-edged mirrors look especially sleek in Contemporary settings. Against a dark wall, you don’t notice the absence of a frame. Mirror glass in clear and colors for your home Clear glass is the norm for framed mirrors in Traditional styles. But more decorative glass includes mysterious, darkened, splotched, antique-looking glass. (The real effect occurs when the mirror backing begins to deteriorate.) A wide variety of colored glasses are
By Katharine Kaye McMillan and Patricia Hart McMillan from Home Decorating For Dummies, 2nd Edition Mirror, mirror on the wall . . . Reflective glass can be decorating magic for one and all! Wall mirrors serve as looking glasses, double the view they reflect, and add sparkle. Perhaps best of all, mirrors make spaces seem larger, a real bonus for a too-small room. Place a mirror where you want to see your own reflection (an entry hall), reflect an interesting view (opposite a window), create a strong focal point (above a mantel), or light up a dark area (above a hall console or table in a corner). Be sure your mirror reflects something interesting. Framed wall mirrors for home decorating Selecting framed mirrors that echo the shape of other furniture is always a safe bet. In a dining room with round- or shield-back chairs, for example, a round mirror above the mantel is a subtle unifying element. Mirror frames come in every conceivable furniture style and period, including such favorites as Chippendale, Federal, the Louises, and Contemporary, so matching mirror and furniture style is easy. But using a large Contemporary mirror to add an eclectic note to a Traditional scheme, for example, is perfectly acceptable. For the non-traditionalist, you can find many fabulous ethnic, whimsical, and purely creative styles — or whip up your own. For example, take two white-birch branches, cross them at the bottom (attaching them with glue and tiny nails), round them gently around a round mirror glued onto a plywood circle, then cross them at the top (with some leaves attached) and secured them. The branches would make a delightful frame for a mirror in a summer Reforms Architectural Service & Plans cottage’s entry hall. Choose one that contrasts with the wall it’s hung against: a dark frame to hang against a light wall or vice versa. Traditionally, you want the mirror frame to relate to the furniture below it in value (one shouldn’t be too much lighter or darker than the other), if not in color. In Contemporary interiors, contrast is key, and eclecticism is perfectly okay. Wall mirror frame materials include finished wood, metal, bamboo, and stained glass. Clear glass reflects only what’s put in front of it, so it’s acceptable in almost any setting. Antique glass is a natural with antique or Traditional frames and furniture and can be a striking eclectic accent in a Contemporary room. Colored glass — especially metallic copper and brass, as well as the various grays — requires a greater understanding of color relationships and a deft hand, but it’s generally at home in Contemporary situations. Copper glass in an antique copper frame can also take on a western or lodge look, while grays framed in driftwood (also gray) can take on a country- or beachhouse look. 7 reasons why Spain's the best place on earth Don't get us wrong, Spain isn't perfect. It has struggled out of a crippling economic crisis as well as having high pollution levels and a perpetually corrupt political system. But despite all that, it is still the best place to live in the world. And here is why:
The weather The first thing many people think of about Spain is its sunshine, which attracts millions of holidaymakers to its coasts and cities every year, making Spain the most tourist-friendly country in the world. Everyone feels happier in the sunshine, so grab a cocktail and bask under the Spanish rays.
Highest life expectancy Whether down to the Mediterranean diet rich in olive oil, fish and fresh vegetables, the excellent healthcare or the sociable society, Spaniards have the highest life expectancy in Europe. Live here for a while and hopefully you’ll pick up some of their healthy habits.
Best place for mums A recent survey revealed that Spain is one of the best places in the world to be a mum; it is so good in fact that children never want to leave home - well, until at least the age of 30.
A UNESCO paradise Spain has the third most UNESCO world heritage sites out of all the countries in the world (after China and Italy) with 44. The country’s rich and multicultural history is kept very much alive by the many impressive sites that dot the country: from the Roman Tower of Hercules in the north to the breathtaking Alhambra fortress in the south.
If you need a transplant - you’re in luck The Spanish healthcare system is renowned for being among the very best in the world. It is free at the point of service and the country tops the world organ donation rankings. So living in Spain means if you are ever in the unfortunate position of needing a transplant, you're much more likely to get one.
A foodie paradise Spain has four of its resaurants ranked in the top ten in Europe. Spaniards, whatever their budget, adore food and the ritual that surrounds it. You don’t have to fork out a fortune to eat like a king in Spain, where fresh produce is bountiful and the most amazing food invention (tapas!) means you can try multiple morsels in one evening. And if you like ham, there is no greater place on earth.
Spaniards cherish their grannies and their children Spain is a sociable society, one in which grandparents are virtually never carted off to an old people's home, but become the cherished head of the family, often living and socialising with their younger relations. The same goes for family members at the other end of the family tree - Spaniards love children, who are welcome in every restaurant and bar and always made a fuss of - a new mother in Spain can't walk two minutes down the street without being stopped by interested strangers who want to coo over her new tot.

Ho Chi Minh Trail III
By 1970 America was bombing the trail with 200 aircraft a day. The NVA responded by adding more anti aircraft guns until 1500 were stationed along the route. The American C-130 Spectre gunship was used on night time raids and accounted for over half of the 4000 lorries destroyed that year. It wasn’t until 1972 when Russian made Sam-7 missiles protected the convoys that things got tougher for the Americans. In neighbouring Cambodia there was a military coup with alleged CIA involvement; there was a strong anti communist fervour in Cambodia and suddenly the NVA lost the use of the Cambodian port of Sihanoukville which was close to the Vietnamese border. In response the NVA took over a large part of Laos called the Bolaven Plateau bordering Vietnam. They built new roads including one 1000km long to the south of Laos. The NVA now were fighting to keep parts of Cambodia for its supply routes. By increasing the amount of Laos they operated in; the 50km wide network of trails suddenly was 150 km wide. Abandoned American bases were taken over. After the propaganda success in 1968 of the Tet offensive, America had been steadily withdrawing its forces; instead training and supplying the South Vietnamese military (ARVN). A process they called Vietnamization. In 1971 an invasion force 20,000 strong of ARVN soldiers crossed into Laos to attack the trail and its main supply hub at Tchepone. With

American air support all went well at first until the NVA government in Hanoi made the decision to defend their territory; within days they had 60,000 troops on the counter attack. Instead of their usual guerrilla tactics they used conventional techniques with heavy artillery and large infantry attacks. Anti aircraft guns damaged and destroyed over 700 American/South Vietnamese helicopters so they started to run out of supplies. In the end the Americans launched a huge air attack so that the ARVN could escape back to Vietnam but 10,000 of them were dead or wounded. In 1972 the NVA attacked the northernmost province held by the ARVN using 300 tanks and further attacks gained them more territory but they lost 100’s of thousands of soldiers. By 1973 the Americans had left Vietnam and the two sides were supposed to be negotiating the peace via the Paris Peace Accords. Both sides violated the agreements and the Americans also secretly resupplied the ARVN in the south. The trail was now extended from Laos into
Vietnam itself – firstly a 2 lane road and by 1974 It was a paved dual carriageway along with a 4 line fuel pipeline that ended just north of Saigon (modern day Ho Chi Minh City.) The North Vietnamese finally put an end to the war by invading Saigon in April 29th 1975. The Americans launched the largest ever air evacuation; their military personnel, civilians and any South Vietnamese that were lucky enough to get the correct paperwork. It started as an aircraft evacuation until a South Vietnamese pilot defected and bombed the last intact runway. (His plane is in the Ho Chi Minh museum.) The evacuation was instead done by helicopter and ended up a rout. From the American Embassy alone, over 2000 were flown out. The North Vietnamese didn’t fire on any evacuating aircraft. On April 30th Saigon fell and the Ho Chi Minh Trail had served its purpose!

a n e g a t r Ca The port of Cartagena, in the Mediterranean's Costa Cálida, has been prized since Carthaginian times. Thanks to its strategic position on the Murcia coast, it has been inhabited by several cultures which have left their mark on its artistic heritage. A tour of the place and its museums will draw us into the history of a city closely tied to the sea. This maritime enclave was already known to the Carthaginians and Romans, and its name today comes from the Latin, Cartago Nova. Cartagena was under Arab domination until Ferdinand III 'the Saint' reconquered it and incorporated it into the kingdom of Castile. Its port played a key role in the War of Succession and the Peninsular War. Historic centre The rich Carthaginian heritage spreads to the shores of its marina. The Muralla del Mar ('Sea Wall'), built by Charles III (18th century), delimits the old quarter. Overlooking the Mediterranean there is an element which is clearly connected with the sea: the prototype of the submarine by the inventor from Cartagena, Isaac Peral. In addition, the National Museum of Underwater Archaeology ARQUA (at Paseo Alfonso XII, 22) houses the National
Centre for Under water Archaeological Research. The findings on display reveal aspects of naval construction, trade and navigation since ancient times. The entrance to the city centre is dominated by the Town Hall, a gem of modernist architecture dating from the early 20th century. The Old Cathedral is located on the Camino del Parque Torres (behind the Muralla del Mar wall). This is the oldest place of worship in CartagenaCartagena (13th century), and stands on the remains of a Roman theatre discovered in 1987. This construction dates from the first century A.D., and together with the theatre in Mérida, is one of the most important in Spain. The items found on this site can be seen in the Museum of the Roman Theatre. Other examples of Roman splendour to be seen in the city are the archaeological site of El Molinete, the Morería Baja colonnade and the Byzantine Wall, which –despite its name– is also Roman. Particularly worth mentioning are the Augusteum and the Decumanus. The first contains the remains of the old forum, whose importance as a public building can be seen from the luxurious marble floors on display at the site. The second can be visited on the site adjoining the Roman Forum quarter, a key centre for visitors to the city, containing the different rooms in the city's Roman baths. The Casa Fortuna, built in the first century B.C. and belonging to a wealthy family, shows what daily life was like at the time of the Roman Empire. The Torres park is the site of the Concepción castle. Standing
atop a hill, it served as a fortress to Carthaginians, Romans, Visigoths, Arabs and Castilians, and now houses the History and Mediaeval Cartagena Visitor Centre. Indeed the city has always had numerous defensive military buildings. A good example is the Navidad Fortress, built in the mid-19th century and today the Visitor Centre for the Defensive Architecture of Cartagena and the Mediterranean. Also worth visiting is the Refuge – Civil War museum, a series of galleries which were used as protection from aerial attack throughout the conflict. (More information at http://www.cartagenapuertodeculturas.com/) The best way to learn more about the Modernist architecture of Cartagena is to take a walk along the Calle Mayor, which leads off the Plaza del Ayuntamiento square, and around the surrounding area. Here visitors will find the houses of Cervantes and Llagostera, by the Cartagena architect Victor Beltrí, with their characteristic glassed-in balconies, worked in iron with bronze reliefs of allegorical figures. Other representative buildings of this artistic movement include the Casino, the Gran Hotel, the railway station, and the houses of Maestre and Dorda, all elegant monuments to the bourgeoisie which remain as evidence of the area's economic development, based on mining and industry, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. More aristocratic are the palaces of Aguirre (whose adjoining modernist building is this side of the Regional Modern Art Museum MURAM) and Pedreño, one in the modernist and the other in the neoclassical style. The Punic Wall stands on Monte Aletes, one of the five hills surrounding Cartagena. This is the location of the Visitor Centre for this site, dating from the third century B.C. Adjoining the historic walled centre is the Military Arsenal, whose construction was concluded during the reign of Charles III. The walls here have the only surviving entrance gateway in the city. More interesting items from the history of Cartagena can be seen in the Naval Museum, located in the old Naval Offices in Paseo de Alfonso XII, which contains an exhibition of old maritime navigation instruments, maps and navigation charts, as well as models of ships of all kinds. The fishing quarter of Santa Lucía is also well worth visiting. The city of Cartagena also has a variety of key cultural events each year, such as the world music festival known as the 'La Mar de Músicas' (Sea of Music). Other highlights include the historical festivities of the Carthaginians and the Romans in the second fortnight of September which commemorate the Punic foundation of the city, and the Roman reconquest.

The Sculpture Competition
Chairman Mao Tse-tung produced perhaps the most famous ‘Little Red Book’ and its subsequent effects were profound, for good or bad, on the people of the newly formed People’s Republic of China. Loco Paco’s ‘Pequeño Libro Rojo’ may have slightly different effects. It wasn’t Paco’s idea. He didn’t have ideas just a collection of random inconsequential and ridiculous notions which have nothing to do with the real world or any accepted reality. This of course made Paco, if he wanted to pursue such a career of course, the archetypical politician. One wonders at the sanity of anyone even wanting to ask Paco about his thoughts, then to have the courage to sit and listen to them and then to publish the gibberish. It could perhaps be the greatest literary feat of all time or it could send an entire generation running to the psychiatrist’s door. The consequences of allowing the thoughts of someone who is clinically insane, addled and completely barmy such as Paco free reign within a susceptible society are to say the least indeterminate. The book’s production was fraught with problems from day one. A dozen proof readers sought professional help while others regarded Paco as a cult figure and initiated the ‘Church of the Divine Paco’. They worshipped him, ‘Benjy’, his Saharan Dung Beetle and even his imaginary five-foot tall rodent called ‘Bert’. Those associated with the project arrived ashen faced and shaken for their morning’s work. They left dazed, confused and suicidal at
the end of the day.
Work however progressed and ‘El Pequeño Libro Rojo de Loco Paco’ was eventually ready for its launch. Loco Paco, resplendent in Alqueria Unido football shorts, sequined halter necked top and DMS army boots duly arrived for the book signing. Whether Paco was conscious of the occasion is debatable as he scrawled all sorts of inane messages across the fly sheets of his work. He signed whatever name came into his head including Adolf Hitler, Marilyn Monroe and the Dalai Lama. Gems of wisdom for all occasions sprung forth from the publication. Of sport and in particular football came. ‘It is better to equalise before the other side score’. Of holy-wedlock he said. ‘Marriage is like a glorious landscape: a vast empty expanse with little humanity’. Of artificial stimulants he was quoted as saying. ‘The effects of alcohol to sustain, lift the spirits and inspire wisdom are only temporary if one stupidly ceases to drink. So did Paco’s book inspire a generation? You try buying a copy from Amazon.
Black Holes and Holidays
We’ve just come back from an excellent holiday in Portugal. We were away for 8 days, which stretched the Biggs organisational ability to its fullest extent. I have a theory that there is some imbalance in the Universe, some twitch in the fabric of Time, some Cosmic ripple, which manifest itself randomly throughout our lives, but is noticeable specifically around holidays. For instance, normally I can sail through 24 hours with reasonable tranquillity. I get up, sort out the menagerie and get my housework done as well as any other mundane delights, such a shopping, cleaning the pool, or cleaning the car (though that doesn’t happen often) get lunch, tie up all the loose end jobs that didn’t get done in the morning, have a cup of tea, feed the animals again, get supper going, sit down with a glass of wine, eat supper and flop in front of the television to enjoy something that requires no mental or physical exertion on my part. There are days where the job list is exactly the same, yet even though I run round like a ferret on speed only half the jobs get done, and so have to be added to tomorrow’s itinerary. Why? Everything is the same, yet the size of the day seems to have shrunk, and doesn’t fit into its allocated time, much like jeans that have been in the wardrobe for a time, and come out smaller than they were when they were last worn. Holidays, however, have an even greater disruptive influence on the Time continuum. I can creep up on them surreptitiously, packing a few items at a time over a period of days,

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk so that they don’t see me coming, but of course, returning from holiday is a different matter – that can not be disguised, it happens all at once! How is it that although my house has been empty, it is dusty, and the floor needs sweeping? Who made the dust? Where did the fluff come from? And why has everything in the garden grown to Triffid proportions? I’ve only been gone for a week, yet everything seems to have put on more growth than it normally would in a month. But more than all that, I took one suitcase; so how come there is so much washing? The machine hasn’t stopped for days! I think the washing conundrum is something to do with Black Holes. If things disappear down them then they must come out somewhere – I think that they come out in my washing machine!

Spicy chickpea burgers with mango salsa A simple veggie burger with a nice kick of spice. Serve with a zesty mango salsa for a snack that's full of flavour.
FOOD & DRINK... vegetarian
Ingredients: 1 cucumber 75g/2½oz feta cheese, drained 1 tbsp chopped fresh dill ¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper 3 tbsp pomegranate seeds
Ingredients: 400g tin chickpeas in water 2 free-range eggs 2 tsp curry powder 100g/3½oz breadcrumbs 2 tbsp vegetable oil salt and pepper For the mango salsa
Method:
Method:
Top, tail and then peel the cucumbe r. Cut into 1.5-2cm/¾in thick slices to give about 16-18 in total. Using a melon baller, small teaspoon or a ¼ teaspoon measuring spoon, scoop out enough of the seeds from the middle to give a cup that has a border about 5mm thick, making sure you don’t go right dow n to the bottom. Arrange them on a large platter and set aside. Break the feta cheese into a small bowl and mash it with a fork until as smooth as possible. Add the dill and season with the pepper (but no salt as feta is already salty), stirring everything together well. Divide the feta cheese mixture between the cucu mber cups. Arrange a little pile of pomegranate seeds on top of each one and serve.
Drain the chickpeas and tip them into a bowl. Crack in the eggs. Add the curry powder and breadcrumbs, season with salt and pepper, then mash together using a potato masher or fork until you have a rough paste. Using your hands, shape the mixture into 8 small patties. Heat the oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat and cook the patties for 2-3 minutes on each side. Remove from the pan and drain on a plate lined with kitchen paper. In the meantime, stone, peel and dice the mango and put it into a small mixing bowl. Thinly slice the spring onion and add it to the bowl. Add the dried mint and chilli flakes and season with salt and pepper. Preheat the grill to high. Slice the pittas in half and lightly toast them. Serve the burgers with the pittas and salsa.
What is a vegetarian? Broadly defined, a vegetarian is a person who does not eat meat, poultry, and fish. Vegetarians eat mainly fruit, vegetables, legumes, grains, seeds, and nuts. Many vegetarians eat eggs and/or dairy products but avoid hidden animal products such as beef and chicken stocks, lard, and gelatin. Why are people vegetarians? People are vegetarians for many reasons, including concern for personal health and the environment, economic and world hunger concerns, compassion for animals, belief in nonviolence, food preferences, or spiritual reasons. People may become vegetarians for one reason, and then later on adopt some of the other reasons as well. Vegetarian diets are somewhat more common among adolescents with eating disorders than in the general population. According to the ADA position paper on vegetarian diets, however, “recent data suggest that adopting a vegetarian diet does not lead to eating disorders, rather that vegetarian diets may be selected to camouflage an existing eating disorder.” Be sure you fully understand your own reasons for choosing

vegetarianism. What are the health benefits of a vegetarian diet? According to the ADA, vegetarians are at lower risk for developing: • Heart disease • Colorectal, ovarian, and breast cancers • Diabetes • Obesity • Hypertension (high blood pressure) This is because a healthy vegetarian diet is typically low in fat and high in fiber. However, even a vegetarian diet can be high in fat if it includes excessive amounts of fatty snack foods, fried foods, whole milk dairy products, and eggs. Therefore, a vegetarian diet, like any healthy diet, must be well planned in order to help prevent and treat certain diseases. Are there any health risks in becoming a vegetarian? Some vegans may have intakes for vitamin B-12, vitamin D, calcium, zinc, and occasionally riboflavin
that are lower than recommended. Do vegetarians get proper nutrition? The key to any healthy diet is to choose a wide variety of foods, and to consume enough calories to meet your energy needs. It is important for vegetarians to pay attention to these five categories in particular. Protein Calcium Vitamin D Iron Vitamin B-12 What about athletes? Being both an athlete and a vegetarian can be challenging, especially for vegans. It can be difficult to eat a volume of food high enough to meet an athlete’s high caloric needs. Vegetarians who participate in sports should be aware of their increased energy needs, and should make a concerted effort to consume sufficient calories. Click for info on sports nutrition. Bullfighting in Spain
"Corrida De Toros"
Bullfighting is universally associated with Spain, but it is also practiced in other countries, e.g. the south of France, Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador**, Guatemala, Panama. ** In May, 2011, Ecuadorians voted to abolish bullfighting, allowing only fights where the bull is not killed. The vote was seen as a victory for the poor over the wealthy elite, most of whom are of Spanish or European descent. Portugal has its own variation in which the bull is fought from horseback and not killed in the ring. Even within Spain, there may be regional variations. For example, the recortes of the Basque Country and Navarra, which involve young men doing acrobatic stunts around and over the bull (which is not killed or even physically harmed. If you have seen Goya’s famous etching of the 19th-century fighter Juanito Apiñani vaulting over a bull, you get the idea.) Bullfighting has attracted painters and writers such as Goya, Manet, Picasso, Tolstoy, Lorca and Hemingway to name a few. Its claim to be an integral part of Spanish artistic culture is reflected in its place in Spanish newspapers, where reports on bullfights regularly appear in the section entitled Cultura; it is not a sport goes the argument. Anthropologists and psychologists have also weighed in, attempting to decode the meaning of thecorrida de toros, and politicians have used it for their own
purposes. For example, General Franco, dictator from 1939 to 1975, promoted it strongly as the fiesta nacional. Following his death, separatist sentiment, especially in Catalonia (Catalunya), has associated the corrida with centralism and repression. Barcelona once had three bullrings, but only one –the Plaza de Toros Monumental—remains active and there is some doubt about its future. See below. (The oldest bullring has been torn down; the other is being transformed into a shopping and
leisure complex.) Only aficionados still insist that bullfighting is the fiesta nacional. Its popularity is greatest in Andalucía and around Madrid, but as a national passion, it ranks far behind soccer. It was banned in the Canary Islands in 1991, and there is a strong anti-bullfighting
PART 1

Few topics generate more hea ted discussion than bullfighting. Adv ocates call it an art, opponents condem n it as cruel. There seems to be no roo m for compromise.
sentiment in Galicia and Catalonia (in Barcelona the city council officially condemned it in 2004). In Catalonia, children under 14 have been prohibited from attending bullfights since 1999. A poll taken in 2006 showed that only about 25% of Spaniards had any interest in the spectacle, and those were made up mostly of older people. Although there is a core of aficionados, opposition to the bullfighting continues to grow. Protests are held regularly outside many of the larger rings, and animal rights activists and others have put pressure on the European Union (EU) to condemn it. In 2007 the EU went as far as to urge Spain to end bullfighting, not nearly far enough for animal rights activists. Aficionados have countered calling on UNESCO to grant bullfighting a World Heritage status. In 2007, the socialist governement took the historic step of discontinuing live broadcasts of corridas on Spain’s public television (TVE). Live bullfighting had been a staple of late afternoon family viewing from 1951, but the government argued that it was expensive to put on, and clashed with the time slot for children's programming. Some regional outlets, however, still continue live transmissions. Passionate arguments are put forth by both sides in support of their views. Anti-bullfighting campaigners decry the cruelty of a practice in which the bull is
publicly taunted, maimed, and made to bleed, before being callously killed. It breeds insensitivity to the brutal abuse of animals, they argue, and causes unnecessary suffering simply for the pleasure of the spectators. Aficionados counter with a variety of arguments. Bullfighting is part of the Spanish identity; the bull leads a pampered life until it enters the ring (where it will die within 20 minutes) and therefore receives better treatment than the millions of animals, fattened for mass consumption; the bull is so driven by adrenaline that it doesn’t really suffer; the bullfighting supports a $2 billion industry employing over 100,000 people; the breeding of the bulls benefits the environment because it protects land that might otherwise fall to urban development or golf courses. Going green is a clever pitch! (For the morality of eating meat from bulls killed in the ring, seehttp://www.theguardian. com/lifeandstyle/2014/aug/20/fightingbull-beef-most-ecological-meat-inworld The numerous comments make interesting reading too.)

A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY part 1
The territory which is today known as the Region of Murcia has been inhabited by man for over 1,500,000 years, and this human presence has been a constant factor in the development of the Murcian landscape since the remotest periods of prehistory. The first evidence of the presence of man dates back to the Neanderthal and Cromagnon periods, whilst archaeological finds become abundant from Neolithic times onwards. Iron age remains begin to speak of a certain level of progress leading to the development of agriculture and the domestication of livestock during the Iberian period and, later, intense commercial activity with the presence of Phoenecian, Greek and Carthaginian settlers in permanent conflict with the autoctonous people. Scipio's conquest of the city of Carthago Nova in 209 BC led to the definitive expansion of what had already become an important economic and political centre in the Mediterranean. The conquest of the region by Rome initiated a period of uninterrupted growth all along the Murcian coast which was to go on for more than 600 years.

Already at that time, market-garden produce from the valley irrigated by the Segura River (then known as the River Thader) was highly appreciated, as was fish caught on the rich off-shore fishing-grounds. After a prolonged spell of political instability, a consequence of the disintegration of the Roman Empire, a long period of Arab domination began in 713 AD when Abdelaziz defeated Theudemir's Hispano-Visigoth army in Cartagena. The year 825 AD constituted a further historical landmark, when the city of Murcia was officially founded by Abderraman II. These events marked the onset of Murcia's economic prosperity since the Arabs initiated the large-scale exploitation of the Segura river valley, creating a whole complex irrigation system, composed of canals, dams and water-wheels, the forerunner of today's irrigation network, which made it possible to reap the maximum benefit from the vast expanse of fertile land surrounding the city. However, the economic abundance brought to the South of Spain

The Mar Menor is a huge (135 square kilometres) salt-water lagoon, separated from the Mediterranean by the 24 kilometre long La Manga del Mar Menor (The Strip). The average depth of the Mar Menor is four metres and at its maximum it is seven metres which means that the seabed slopes very gradually and you have to get several hundred metres in before the water is of any depth. The Mar Menor’s salinity provides buoyancy so it is, supposedly, one of the safest places to swim in the world. The mineral-rich waters are said to have therapeutic effects and because of this the area has a significant spa tourism industry. The sludge in the salt pans is also credited with beneficial effects on the health, so there are often dozens of mud people wallowing in it at any one time.Playa Paraiso beach on a summer weekendThe beach at Playa Paraiso is very popular, partly because it has road access right onto the beach. On summer weekends it will be packed with Spanish families, who move most of their house onto the beach. The sea is very shallow, with netted off areas to exclude watersports, fishing and jellyfish. The jellyfish are mainly harmless and much reduced in numbers from previous years, apart from the summer of 2006 when they were back with a vengeance. Playa Honda beach During the week the beach is quiet. by the Arabs was placed in jeopardy by internal strife, military pressures from the Northern frontier and internal political disorders. The creation of the Taifa kingdoms at the beginning of the eleventh century was the swansong of a territory which would shortly fall - in 1243 - under the vassalage of Castile, and the remains of Andalusia were finally incorporated into this kingdom with the signing of the Granada Peace Treaty in 1492. From this time onwards peace came to the Murcian territories, and they went through a sustained period of economic and demographic growth.

Does your pet have a guardian angel? SPIRITUAL expert Diana Cooper believes we can all learn to connect with the animals in our lifeDiana Cooper has long been one of the country’s “angel experts” and has taught thousands of people to connect with the spiritual beings she says can guide us through life’s challenges. Now she is on a mission to tell us it’s not only people who have guardian angels, animals do too. While this might sound far fetched Diana is completely convinced, saying that the animal angels help guard and guide our pets. “Dogs have two guardian angels as opposed to the one humans are assigned,” she says. “I think it’s because they need more guidance than us. “When I first got my dog Venus our connection was so great that our collective angels merged so we could understand each other even better.” So

making Venus go off the rails. “Venus kept escaping. One day I saw the spirit dog in the kitchen. "It turned out his owner, also a spirit, didn’t want him to pass over without him so we helped them go together,” says Diana. Then there was the Jack Russell found injured and almost dead in a nearby garden. “My neighbour nursed him back to health and became his loving owner. The angels let us know that no prayer goes wasted. "The energy of our prayers was channelled to that dog and his new owner. I had no idea that animals had quite so much to teach us. “Venus has taught me a million things about angels but also to love and laugh.” • Call on the Archangel Fhelyai, who is yellow in colour, and Archangel Michael every day in order to protect your animals. I visualise a deep blue and a yellow light which is going round pets. • When you want your dog to come to you don’t scold it if it runs away. Instead try to open your heart and visualise loving pink light pouring from it. Then it will want to return to you. • If you know of an animal in need of help ask Archangel Fhelyai to look after it. No prayer is ever wasted. If your prayer energy is not all used it will go to help another animal in need. • If your pet has to be put down hand its spirit over to the angels and they will look after it. Similarly if you see an animal that has died ask the angels to help the spirit of the animal to pass into the light. http://www.express.co.uk/

pause for thought
In my schooldays the Summer Term was always known as ‘Trinity’, which seemed pretty meaningless to me, so full marks to anyone who realises that this title resulted from the fact that the Sunday 8 weeks after Easter, 31st May this year, is known as Trinity Sunday. Great, but what’s it all about? And what difference should this make for ordinary folk? Well, Trinity is the last major festival in the Church year, which starts with Advent; a time when we prepare for the coming of the Messiah, not just in his birth but also for a promised future return. This is followed by celebration of his birth at Christmas and his relevance to, and worship by gentiles (non Jews) at Epiphany. Next, we’ve had Lent where we recall Christ’s temptations as for 40 days he prepared for his brief ministry in Palestine, then Easter, when we remember his suffering, his death and his resurrection, after which he continued to teach and inspire a considerable number of his associates until, at Ascension, just 40 days after Easter, the Bible asserts that he visibly rose to be engulfed by clouds. Then 10 days later, at Pentecost, whilst these same followers were waiting, perhaps in some trepidation, for direction, then suddenly, what could only be described as the
Spirit of God himself came to them, changing them out of all recognition from timid folk, scared of their own shadows to being outspoken, bold and quite literally, inspired. It was as a conclusion to the amazing climax of following the Christian experience from the depths of Christ’s death through Resurrection, Ascension and Pentecost that the festival of Trinity, just a week after Pentecost, was introduced, proclaiming the amazing understanding that God the Father, Jesus, the Son and the Holy Spirit of Pentecost were all in fact representations of the same God. Not three separate Gods, as some might have you believe, but just one, revealed to humanity in all his threedimensional magnificence. No wonder the disciples were ‘blown away’ by this discovery! North America. On Thursday, Toyota, the world's biggest carmaker, also said that it would help to get to the bottom of the problems with Takata's airbags. Investigations have shown that Takata airbag inflators were not properly sealed and could be damaged by moisture. It is alleged that the airbags can burst under pressure, spraying shrapnel inside the car. Toyota's vow comes as doubts are growing over whether the Japanese firm has enough financial power to deal with all the defects - an issue that could take years. Takata saw a 5bn yen ($41m) extraordinary loss for the fiscal fourth quarter, stemming from costs related to previously announced recalls.

Mitsubishi and Mazda are recalling 630,000 more cars over Takata's airbags Two more Japanese car giants Mazda and Mitsubishi - are recalling 630,000 vehicles to replace faulty air bag inflators made by Takata.
Just last week, Toyota, Nissan, Honda and Daihatsu all recalled millions of cars, because of Takata's potentially deadly airbags.
The move comes just days after the car parts maker said it was doubling the number of cars it had recalled to 34 million, affecting 11 carmakers.
Six deaths have been linked to Takata airbags that have all been in Honda cars. The airbags have also been connected to more than 100 injuries.

EU agrees 1.8bn-euro loan to cash-strapped Ukraine
The EU has agreed a €1.8bn (£1.3bn; $2bn) loan to Ukraine - the largest financial deal with a non-EU member. The agreement was signed at an EU summit in Riga, Latvia, which brings together the leaders of the 28-member bloc and six post-Soviet nations. The loan aims to help revive the cash-strapped economy of Ukraine, which has also been badly affected by fighting with pro-Russian rebels in the east. It requires Ukraine to adopt reforms, including anti-corruption measures. In other developments on Friday: Amnesty International released a report, saying it had found evidence that both sides in the Ukrainian conflict were torturing prisoners, and that the rebels were conducting summary executions Russia was taking all the necessary steps to free two of its citizens recently captured in Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov was quoted as saying. The two men earlier confessed to being members of the Russian armed forces to mediators of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). Ukraine said three of its soldiers had been killed and another 12 injured in the past 24 hours in the east of the country http://www.bbc.com/news/business

Tolo controlled a through ball before finding Liders with an excellent pass and the midfielder struck a sweet left foot shot into the roof of the net from 20 yards. Two minutes later another long ball found Tolo who raced past one defender before lobbing the ball over the oncoming Juvenia keeper but just over the bar. However, Mazarron increased their lead after 20 minutes when good work by young Santi on the right forced a Juvenia defender to handle the ball in the area. Tolo stepped up and calmly drove the spot kick into the net for his 35th goal of the season. Conejo, who had been restored to the Mazarron goal, had to be alert on a number of occasions as Juvenia tried to get back into the game but, at the other end, it was Tolo again who raced through the middle for Mazarron only to see his shot blocked. Conejo then made another good save before Juvenia were awarded a penalty for handball after 29 minutes. Conejo dived to his right to save the spot kick to continue Mazarron’s record of four successive penalty saves. In the final action of the first half, Monty’s free kick was scrambled for a corner by the Juvenia keeper with Tolo challenging for the ball. If Mazarron had the better of the first half, Juvenia came out after the interval determined to reverse things and Conejo had to make a fine save just three minutes into the second half. The home side pulled a goal back after 51 minutes after Enrique conceded a foul for which he received a yellow card. The free kick was floated in from the left and Rivera rose to head the ball past Conejo. It was now all Juvenia and Conejo had to make two more excellent saves before Enrique was penalised again for what seemed an innocuous challenge in midfield. He received a second yellow card and Mazarron were reduced to ten men. To make matters worse, the
37
resultant free kick again resulted in a goal to Juvenia this time after the ball had been deflected onto the bar only for Quijada to head home the rebound. Mazarron were reduced to occasional breakaways with Tolo ploughing a lone furrow up front but he still managed to win two free kicks in the latter stages. The first saw Antonio Clares’s shot saved and the second which resulted in Juvenia being reduced to ten men when Juan Francisco received a second booking. Mazarron would have taken a draw before the game but, having had a two goal lead, their supporters may be disappointed that they surrendered the advantage. However, there is still everything to play for in the second leg which takes place at the Estadio Municipal Mazarron next Sunday, 31st May, kick off 19.00 Team: Conejo; Alfonso, Juan Andreo; Dani; Lorca (Antonio Clares); Monty; Enrique; Andreo; Liders (Diego); Santi (Manu); Tolo Man of the Match; Conejo.

El Plantio, Tuesday competition
This week the Society played a Joker competition, this is where each player selects in advance a hole on the front nine and one on the back nine as their joker, and the Stableford points are doubled for those holes. So careful selection can be very useful, Mike Davies did well this week and his selections helped him to secure the top spot, well done to Mike. With some good scores returned this week, it fell to using the count back rules to decide on the runner up positions. The results this week are: Nearest the pin: Hole 4 Henry Mellor, hole 9 Dave Swann 3rd place: Laurence Wanty H/cap 10 score 39 pts 2nd place: John O'Brien H/cap 7 score 39 pts 1st place Mike Davies H/cap 13 score 44 pts El Plantio 2 Golf Society meets every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday at El Plantio Golf Course, if you would like to join us as a guest or as a new member, contact Ian Henderson on 966 716 616 or 636 116 230 or put your name on the list in the club house before 2pm on Sunday for the Tuesday competition. On Friday 22nd the Society had a golf day at the very picturesque Par 3 course at Torre-Pacheco. This is a small course, better described as a pitch and putt course, but beautifully laid out with a number of ponds, ditches and strategically placed Palm trees to add to the degree of difficulty. On arrival we were welcomed by the resident Pro who was most helpful. Travelling away from our home venue, most members decided to travel light, this was almost a mistake as many members found that the ponds were perfectly placed to catch any slightly wayward balls and a few were to say that they worried that they were going to run out of golf balls. There were 4 nearest-the-pins, 3 provided by the Society and the fourth, a bottle of wine was kindly presented to us by the Pro, many thanks to you. Everyone had a great day, even if the scores didn’t reflect it for most of us and it was unanimously agreed to pay a return visit in the not too distant future. The results were: Nearest the Pin: hole 2 Gordon Wayne, hole 5 Ian Henderson, hole 8 Mike Davies and hole 9 Mel Hope. 3rd place: Bob Bryant h/cap 17, 32 pts 2nd place: Ray Housley h/cap 10, 36 pts 1st place: Chris Davies h/cap 10, 37 pts

SPORTSMAN GS & FRIENDS CUP
VALLE DEL ESTE GOLF RESORT – 18th - 21st MAY 2015 The inaugural annual tournament between members of the Sportsman Golf Society and friends was played at Valle Del Este Golf Resort, a total of 12 players took advantage of the great deal obtained by organiser Dave Smith for a 3 night stay which included unlimited golf and half board in the resorts hotel. Well done Dave for organising the trip. The Valle Del Este course is a very challenging course and with its deep ravines and water features, it was an ideal venue for the first of these planned future annual events. The format was a Practice on Day 1 and then individual stableford over the next three rounds with 2 of the 3 rounds counting towards the overall winner. We also had a couple of team games thrown into the mix and each day a nearest the pin and of course a two’s sweep. It was a tiring week having played 18 holes each day some players managed 27 holes on the second day and 36 holes on the third day. With the temperatures forecast to be mid 20’s for the week it all made for a

swimmer Zoe Connelly that she decided to commit the image to a painting. She described the photo as ‘an inspiration’ and it was not too long before she set about committing it to canvas. “I could see the effort required by Zoe in the butterfly stroke and I just had to capture the sheer determination on her face as she pulled herself through the water,” said Juevra, “so just a few weeks ago I set about my task, with the hopeful intention of perhaps, one day, actually meeting Zoe and presenting her with the picture, but I never realised that it would happen quite so quickly.” Just last week, with the painting now complete, Juevra made contact with the Leader in the hope that they could help her to meet up with Zoe with the intention of presenting the finished work to the young swimmer. The email was passed to Zoe’s mother who responded the very next day. “Zoe was absolutely delighted,” said Vicki, who incidentally was responsible for taking the initial photograph. “I showed the email to Zoe and she was so excited. She would love to accept the painting and be really pleased to meet with the artist.” And so, within just a couple of days, arrangements were made for a meeting at Torrevieja Swimming Pool, the home of Zoe’s parent club, Club Natacion Torrevieja. The pair met last Tuesday evening, along with mother Vicki, when the
she only took up p aint in g f a i r l y r e c e nt l y whilst on a cruise t h a t offered 12 free a r t classes on sea days. Before the end of the cruise she had painted 5 watercolour pictures which were exhibited on the final day. She then joined the U3A painting course on her return to Torrevieja. Now having changed to acrylic, Juevra only paints images that inspire her, recent works including a Spanish flamenco dancer, a Spanish friend’s children, a portrait of her husband, a landscape in Peniscola and of course an action painting of 13 year old Zoe. Later that evening the painting was shown to all the club swimmers, many now wanting a painting of their own. But with it now safely hanging in ‘pride of place’ on her bedroom wall Zoe will get back to the real business of competing and with her eyes firmly set on the Spanish National Summer Championships to be held later the year in Barcelona, for which she has already qualified, this young Torrevieja good trip. swimmer might be equally inspired As expected there were some serious every time she looks up at the painting golf as well as some laughs with a couple hanging above her head.

of players having stories to tell of lucky shots, regular duals with palm trees and in one instance a chip from the fringe of the green that after 4 attempts and a double hit his playing partners were rolling around the green in laughter. Not to be done by this when the hole was finished the same player was so disgusted that he went back to prove he could chip the ball close. Needless to say he did the same again it was painful
on the abdomen. Not going too mention names tho………… I have to say it’s the first time I have played the course and what a challenge it was, really good golfing holes and the driver can only be used on a handful of them. The scores throughout the stay reflected the difficulty with some seasoned g o l f e r s b e ating themselves up in places. The only criticisms is that the t e e i n g ground was very small and due to heavy usage it was difficult to find a good teeing spot. The buggies are also in need of a good service with brakes that were none existent, other than that we all had a great time.
