King Felipe addresses Paraguayan president in his indigenous tongue, Guaraní

SPAIN’S Monarch has proven he has hidden talents after he was filmed welcoming the president of Paraguay in the indigenous language Guaraní. Horacio Cartes (pictured left) was stunned and delighted when Felipe VI addressed him in the little-known language which is one of the few original pre-Colonial tongues that have survived in Latin America. Although Quechua is spoken in Perú and Ecuador and Aymara in Bolivia by remote, rural communities deep in the Andes – and overlap in the Lake Titicaca area on the Perú-Bolivia border – they are very much minority languages and those who live nearer civilisation rarely speak or understand them. But Guaraní in Paraguay – as well as

having given its name to the national currency – is as alive and well as catalán, valenciano, euskera and gallego are in their respective regions in Spain, existing alongside mainstream Spanish. Most native Paraguayans speak both Guaraní and Spanish fluently, but it is rare for any non-Paraguayan, or anyone of another nationality who lives outside the country, to know a single word of the language.

King Felipe VI (pictured right) took the trouble to learn enough to give a short welcome speech to Horacio Cartes when he visited him and Queen Letizia at the Royal Palace, saying he did so in order to recognise Guaraní as ‘an expression and manifestation of a culture deeply

rooted in history’.

In fact, Queen Letizia herself, when she was still Princess of Asturias – a title now held by her elder daughter Leonor – gave a speech in catalán when opening an event in Barcelona: given that she comes from the far northern region of Asturias, catalán is far from being her native tongue or one she would have had to, or even been able to learn. King Felipe then gave a speech in Spanish, in which he championed the ‘firm and unbreakable alliance’ between the two countries to benefit the ‘wellbeing and prosperity’ of both. Mariano Rajoy, Spain’s president was at the official meeting in the Palace but had met with Cartes shortly beforehand in a meeting where he remarked on the growth of the economy in Paraguay and its ‘great conditions for investors’. In addition to the King, Queen and president, guests of honour at lunch with the Paraguayan head of State included pianist Judith Jáuregui, artistic director for the National Dance Company José Carlos Martínez, Paralympic athlete Gema Hassen-Bey, writer and essayist Elsa Punset, and photographer Matías Costa. Paraguay continues to be shrouded in mist in Europe and, even in Spain where holidays to Latin America are popular because of the language and cultural roots in common, international tourism in Paraguay is scarce except from neighbouring countries. Despite this, the country has a wide network of hotels, is cheap and relatively safe and, as well as being one of the three countries which shares the huge and beautiful Iguaçú falls, is peppered with Jesuit ruins, colonial architecture, ranches, and stunning, verdant countryside. source: thinkspain

Floods close major roads in Tarragona

FLASH floods affecting the north of Spain have caused chaos in the province of Tarragona, in southern Catalunya this time with over 270 calls to emergency services made in the early hours of the morning. Nearly two inches of rain, or 43.4 litres per square metre – enough to cause damage to a properly built and maintained home in the eyes of household insurance claims departments – caused road-blocks on main highways throughout the province. The T-721 was closed between La Pobla de Mafumet and Constantí, and the N-340a in Canona and Campclar were shut to traffic. Tarragona city's C/ Pere Martell was flooded in the Serrallo bridge area, rendering it impassible, as was the tunnel leading to a shopping centre between the A-7 motorway and the T-11 in the north-west of the metropolitan area. Lightning caused a fire in an area of bamboo canes next to the Constantí natural gas pump station, leading to a

huge conflagration. Luckily, the blaze was some distance from the nearest homes and the only damage was to scrubland and the pump station itself. Emergency services have contacted the gas company and other firms in the same chemical factory industrial estate to ask them to check their installations for possible explosion risk. Until now, Madrid was the worst-hit area with floods leading to motorways being cut off and metro lines grounded, and a 28-year-old home help losing her life when she was dragged into a partition wall by the current after the garage she was working in filled with water, and the panel fell on top of her. But Catalunya has been on flood alert since late last night, although the rain is now beginning to subside. Even further down the east coast, in the Comunidad Valenciana – an area stricken with drought for the last 18 months – thunder and lightning with torrential rain was reported yesterday (Saturday) for several hours. thinkspain.com

Oliver! actor Ron Moody dies aged 91

Sir Christopher Lee dies at 93

Screen legend famous for roles in Hammer Horror films, Lord of the Rings and Star Wars dies in hospital after suffering heart and respiratory problems. The veteran actor, best known for a variety of films from Dracula to The Wicker Man through to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, passed away on Sunday morning at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London, according to sources. The decision to release the news days after was based on his wife’s desire to inform family members first. The couple had been married for over 50 years. As well as his career in film, Lee also released a series of heavy metal albums, including Charlemagne: The Omens of Death. He was knighted in 2009 for services to drama and charity and was awarded the Bafta fellowship in 2011. His film career started in 1947 with a role in gothic romance Corridor of Mirrors but it wasn’t until the late 50s, when Lee worked with Hammer, that he started gaining fame. His first role with the studio was The Curse of Frankenstein and it was the first of 20 films that he made with Peter Cushing, who also became a close friend. “Hammer was an important part of my life, and generally speaking, we all had a lot of fun,” he said in a 2001 interview.

Grey: New Fifty Shades book 'stolen' Grey retells Fifty Shades of Grey through the eyes of protagonist Christian Grey A copy of EL James's latest Fifty Shades novel has been stolen ahead of its publication. Kent Police has launched an investigation after Random House discovered a copy of Grey had gone missing on Monday. It is feared thieves may leak the novel, or sell extracts to the media. The book, which re-tells the first instalment of the hit trilogy from billionaire Christian Grey's point of view, is due to be released next week. Random House and solicitors for the publisher would not give any other information about the missing book. "We have no comment to make due to an ongoing police investigation," a spokesman said. A spokesman for Kent Police said: "Officers are making inquiries after receiving a report that a book had been stolen on 8 June."

June 2015 May 2015

The Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy has sold more than 125 million copies worldwide since the first book's release in 2011. When announcing the release of Grey last week, James said she wrote the new book after "thousands of readers" had written to her requesting to hear Christian's point of view. "Christian is a complex character and readers have always been fascinated by his desires and motivations, and his troubled past," she said. "Also, as anyone who has ever been in a relationship knows, there are two sides to every story." Grey will be published on 18 June Christian Grey's birthday. http://www.bbc.com/

The actor first played the part in the stage production of Lionel Bart’s musical in both the West End and on Broadway, before making the movie. Speaking about the making of the film to The Guardian in 2012, Moody said he never expected to reprise his role because there had been “backstage hostilities” on the stage production. But he said, “that summer of 1967 was one of the happiest times of my life”. “My proudest moment was the number Reviewing the Situation. I suspect that, because I gave my all to the role, and because I was working with such a fine team of people, it inhibited my future career,” he added. “I turned down quite a few offers

afterwards because I thought the people didn’t come close to those I’d worked with on Oliver! - which in retrospect was a mistake.” The actor said his biggest regret was turning down an opportunity to become one of the incarnations of The Doctor in Doctor Who. But his lengthy career saw him play Captain Hook five times, Uriah Heep in David Copperfield, and the title role in Sherlock Holmes - the musical. His other films included Murder Most Foul, Legend of the Werewolf and The Spaceman. He is survived by his widow and six children. http://www.bbc.com/

Disney set to lose up to $140m on Tomorrowland

Loss would be biggest since studio’s $150m financial misfire The Lone Ranger in 2013 and John Carter’s $200m loss in 2012 There may be trouble ahead ... George Clooney in Tomorrowland. Disney is expected to lose up to $140m (£90m) on the George Clooney futuristic fantasy Tomorrowland, its biggest loss in two years, accordin g to the Hollywood Reporter. Brad Bird’s film, about an inventor (Clooney) who travels with a teenage girl to a strange utopia, cost $180m to produce but also featured a staggeri ng $150m marketing budget. So far it has made back just $170m in three weeks at the global box office, with future returns unlikely to radically change the financial picture. The film opened to just $40m at the US box office on 26 May, and failed to find its feet in China, the world’s second-largest film market, where it just $13.8m on debut earlier this month, to open behind the Japanes scored e anime Stand By Me Doraemon. The predicted loss of between $120m and $140m, according to the Hollywood Reporter’s sources, would be Disney’s biggest since Johnny Depp vehicle The Lone Ranger faltered in 2013, leading to a $150m writedown. Prior to that, the studio reportedly lost $200m on space fantasy John Carter followin g a misfiring marketing campaign for Andrew Stanton’s riff on Edgar Rice Burroug hs’ pulpy Martian adventures. However, Disney is having an excellent year at the box office, with superhero epic The Avengers: Age of Ultron having scored $1.3bn worldwide and fairytale fantasy Cinderella rifling past $500m in April. The studio also has Star Wars adventure The Force Awakens, the bookies’ runaway favourite to be 2015’s highest-grossing film, set to debut in December. Moreover, Inside Out and AntMan will both be expected to perform well when they arrive in cinemas in June and July respectively.

just just new new doors doors or or a aa complete complete e k e c a n m e new new kitchen? kitchen? r s! e f f di ith u w The anti-eviction activist turned politician Ada Colau was sworn in as mayor of Barcelona on Saturday thanks to the support of independents and Socialists, the parties said on Friday. Colau, one of the leading lights of the Indignados (Outraged) protest movement that grew out of Spain's economic crisis, will be the Catalonian city's first female mayor. Her list of candidates won 11 of the 41 seats in local elections on May 24 that saw the Indignados hammer Spain's ruling conservatives. Her nearest rival, the incumbent conservative Xavier Trias, won 10 seats. But her position as mayor was secured when the ERC, a left-wing independent party that has five seats and the Socialists,

who have four seats, threw their support behind her. "We are going to vote for Ada Colau to be sworn in through a sense of responsibility because we believe in the union of people committed to social justice, progress and wellbeing," said ERC leader Alfred Bosch. Colau, 41, has pledged to fight inequalities in the city of 1.6 million by putting an end to evictions from housing, lowering energy prices and bringing in a minimum monthly income of 600 euros ($675). Spain's capital Madrid will also have a leftist mayor on Saturday after 71-year-old retired judge Manuela Carmena's Ahora Madrid protest party agreed an alliance with the Socialists. Carmena has also made ending evictions a priority in a bid to reduce homelessness.

Royal Ascot Tuesday, June 16 until Saturday, June 20

The Royal Ascot meeting is a caterers nightmare, with the racecourse serving over 50,000 meals over the five day course of the meeting. An astonishing 185,000 bottles of champagne are consumed during the course of the event, washing down the 11,000 lobsters and 1.4 tons of beef served up in the various restaurants.

Apart from being the richest meeting in Europe, the event is also one of the best attended with over 300,000 visitors packing into Ascot Racecourse during the five days with crowds peaking during Ladies Day.

Ascot Racecourse has one of the toughest tracks in Britain and is noted in particular for the steep uphill section which sees horses having to climb 73 feet from the lowest to highest points on the course.

CHANGES TO:

John B told everyone about a dinosaur’s tooth, a defunct iron ore overhead gantry system and the place where the women of Bolnuevo washed their clothes. Well, he would have told everyone of the washing place if the walkers had not been so spread out.

The nudists kept their distance and the Frenchwoman who lives in a cave, did not come out to play. Colette talked a lot but that is usual. Barrie and Jan just managed to beat the 10-year-old Scottish dog to the finish. And at the finish, there was a table, several bottles of cava (one from the Wismers), orange juice and glasses. A good way to end a successful programme of walks.

Jon T had no real story, just something about a Mazarrón footballer who played for Athletico Madrid “B” Team. He (Jon not the player) did fall over at the Roman Quay but more loss of dignity than damage.

The Ultimate Guide to Essential Oils

New Legs and Co shop now open in Torrevieja Indoor Market.

Essential oils can be used in so many ways—from adding a drop to your favorite fragrance-free lotion or dabbing a little on your pulse points instead perfume. The best part? Choose your scent (or blend a few!) based on your mood to customize your fragrance every time. Here’s how. DivineCaroline.com

The new shop will of course offer the same friendly service, prices and quality you expect from Legs and Co. as well as a free bra fitting service. A warm welcome will be given by Donna and her staff.

Odds are you’ve experienced essential oils, when you’ve walked into a spa and breathed in the lavender or orange blossom that greets you at the front door or when you cracked open that reed diffuser your mom gave you for your birthday. But there’s also a good chance that you haven’t experimented with essential oils on your own. After all, there are seemingly endless options—and no guidance on the best way to incorporate them into your beauty routine. Nick James, a botanist and the co-founder of Body Bliss—a company that sources high-quality essential oils—says it doesn’t have to be complicated. “You can achieve amazing results with essential oils and aromatherapy, whether it’s an outlook on life that needs to be adjusted or a pain that needs to be relieved,” James says. “The catch is knowing the right oil for the job and choosing a good quality oil.” To help you master the essential oils aisle, we asked James for his ultimate tips on choosing and using oils. Follow his advice and get ready for some pretty powerful results. 1. Add them to a bath. For a therapeutic effect, James recommends adding the oil into a bath. However, you can’t just drop the oil into the water; you’ll need a carrier that will spread it throughout the water. James’ simple trick: Mix a few drops of your essential oils into a tablespoon of heavy whipping cream and add that to the bath water. It’ll help distribute the oils evenly in the water. 2. No time for a bath? Add them to an unscented oil or lotion. Unscented body oil is actually the best vehicle for carrying the benefits of the essential oils into your skin, but an unscented body lotion will also work. 3. Find a company you trust. The essential oils James sources and sells at Body Bliss are high-grade, therapeutic oils. After all, James is a botanist; he studies plants for a living and knows which plants—grown in which climates, countries, and altitudes—will work best. A handful of other companies also stocks this level of products. So, do your homework before you buy. Check out the manufacturer’s philosophy and the retailer’s commitment to bringing you the highest-quality oil available.

The new shop is easy to find. For those who know the area it is in the new Indoor Market. This can be found by turning right at the first roundabout after McDonalds driving away from Torrevieja and Carrefour. There are lots of other businesses in the Indoor Market, Donna said, there is everything from clothing for men and women to a bakers, estate agent, the list goes on. There is also a café to park your husband whilst you enjoy stress free browsing, so it is truly a great day out she added.

cardamom, cinnamon, clove basil, eucalyptus, fennel, lemon, peppermint, or sage. When you’re feeling stressed, reach for lavender, bergamot, cedarwood, frankincense, myrrh, orange, peach, neroli, or rose geranium. When you’re needing a shot of confidence, reach for jasmine, patchouli, sandalwood, or frankincense. When you want to get in the mood, reach for jasmine, vanilla, ylang-ylang, or sandalwood. 6. Don’t be afraid to blend. Essential oils can be used on their own or combined to create a unique blend—one that James says may even have a more powerful benefit than if you use the oils on their own. “Blending oils not only creates a more interesting scent, but it also means you have a greater chance of finding the oil that’s going to hit the button on your specific issue,” he says.

Legs and Co offer a wide range of UK branded lingerie, swimwear and clothing from UK suppliers such as M&S and Naturana and all come in British sizes for that perfect fit. With bra cup sizes from 30C to 44J and swimwear in Sizes 8 to 24, Legs and Co really do cater for all shapes and sizes and if you’re not sure then a FREE measuring and bra fitting is always available. Legs and Co have been established in the area for over 13 years Legs and Co is open from 10am to 3pm on Monday to Friday and 10am to 2pm on Saturdays. 4. Trust your nose. James says you can tell after just a few sniffs what’s good and what’s not. “True essential oils are full of aromatic essences,” James says. “Take lavender as an example. You’ll want to look for one that has a soft and sweet smell— not something that smells synthetic.” 5. Know which scents help which ailments. While a number of different options can help with a wide variety of issues, there are certain scents that help with specific issues. Here are some of the common times when an aromatherapeutic pick-me-up can help, and what to reach for: When you’re feeling down or angry, reach for jasmine, bergamot, lemon, chamomile, rose, tangerine, or ylangylang. ROYAL SCANDAL

A new royal controversy has erupted over Cristina de Borbón, King Felipe VI’s younger sister, who will soon stand trial for tax fraud in connection with the so-called Nóos case. Spain’s Official Gazette, published in the early hours of Friday morning, states that the monarch has stripped his sister of the title of Duchess of Palma, which she held since 1997 when she married the former Olympic handball player Iñaki Urdangarin. But the princess’s lawyer, Miquel Roca I Junyent, claimed just a few hours later that it was Cristina de Borbón who had renounced the nobility title in a letter written in June. Her husband, once an admired figure within the royal family, has since become a major suspect in an embezzlement case involving no-bid contracts Sources at the Royal Palace cast doubt on this version of events. “The renunciation letter arrived by fax yesterday, after the king informed Cristina of his decision to take away her title,” said a source. Urdangarin, once an admired figure within the royal family, has since become a major suspect in an embezzlement case involving no-bid contracts

A VERY EXPENSIVE everything goes to the two of MISTAKE: you with the right to accrue

Question. My brother and myself recently inherited a villa in Fuengirola worth 400,000€. I agreed with my brother that he keep the property and I would compensate him. With this as the background agreement we assisted the notary and we both signed a deed in which I renounced in his favour and he accepted the inheritance of the housem half directly and half due to me renouncing my half in his favour. The solicitor is now saying that the tax office is claiming that in respect to my half two taxable transactions have taken place: they tax the inheritance of half by me and then tax a donation to my brother. Is this correct? A. You have made a very expensive mistake. What the tax office is claiming is correct, as in Spain if you renounce and establish the new beneficiaries on the deed then the tax office taxes the transaction twice (inheritance+donation). The best solution depending on the way the will was worded would have been: A. If the will states that

the other, then you could have signed a full unconditional renunciation to your father’s estate (which is not taxable as long as it is unconditional ) in which case the next in line according to the will would have been your brother (without you having to name him, which would have made it a donation) who would have inherited the complete property directly from your father. B. If the will stated that you are both the heirs and then as a second step the grandchildren, then solution A. would not work , but in this case you should have both inherited as stated on the will and then you could have signed a deed to resolve the joint ownership which is much cheaper than a donation. The only angle to your situation now would be to speak to the tax office to see if there is any way you can sign a deed of modification at the notary claiming that you made a mistake. (It will be difficult but as there is a lot of money involved worth a try).

awarded to his Nóos Institute by the regional governments of Valencia and the Balearic Islands. His wife Cristina – known as the ‘infanta’ – found herself embroiled in the case through her joint ownership of a company that allegedly served to receive the ill-gotten funds. She also allegedly used company credit cards to make personal purchases, then claimed tax deductions. For the more than three years since she became a target of the court investigation, Cristina has refused to give up her succession rights to the throne For more than three years, since before she became a formal target of the court investigation, Cristina has refused to give up her succession rights to the throne, even if these are more theoretical than real. Her father Juan Carlos, then her brother Felipe – who accessed the throne a year ago – have been asking her to take this symbolic step as a way to improve the royal family’s image. Juan Carlos himself stepped down at a time of unprecedented low popularity for the institution marked by street protests by supporters of turning Spain into a republic. Sources from the royal household claim “the decision to renounce the rights of dynastic succession continue to be in the hands” of the

infanta. King Felipe reportedly telephoned Cristina to inform her of his royal decree stripping her of her noble title, ahead of its publication in the Official Gazette. The case has been surrounded by controversy, and led to a public falling out between Judge Castro and his anti-corruption attorney On February 8, 2014, Cristina de Borbón became the first member of Spain’s royal family to testify in court as a target of a criminal investigation. Palma de Mallorca Judge José Castro asked the princess around 400 questions during her more than sixhour appearance in his courtroom, to which she answered “I don’t know” 182 times. The case against the Spanish Infanta has itself been surrounded by controversy, and led to a public falling out between Judge Castro and his anticorruption attorney Pedro Horrach. The latter has held that there is no hard evidence to put Cristina de Borbón on trial, and suggested that she is being persecuted for who she is, rather than for what she has done. The judge, on the other hand, claims that putting the princess on the stand proves that everybody is equal before the law, regardless of their royal background. elpais.com

PROTECTING YOUR FURNITURE ETC IN TH E HOT MONTHS. The hot summer months are well on the way now and the Spanish Sun is unrelenting from dawn to dusk. Some people escape it by popping off to good old Blighty for a few months and the ones left behind entertain family and friends or just enjoy the summer. Why don’t we do as the Spanish do in the summer, after all they have the handle on the summer here as they were born and bred in Spain and have the experience of the hot months. The one thing I do myself is keep my shutters shut during the morning at the back of my house as the sun rises there. Helps keep my casa cooler for the day and do not open again until after 2.00 p.m. Then I will close the shutters on the front of my casa as the sun is pouring in there after 2.00 p.m. Then when the evening breeze gets up in the evening I open up the shutters to air the casa. Not only does this help keep my casa cooler for sleeping in the night it also protects my furniture from the strong rays of sunshine. Using your shutters in this way saves your wooden furniture drying out and fading, including any of your upholstery and other fabrics such as curtains etc. I am not saying live like a pit pony in the dark, just leave a little gap to allow light in to see where you are going and leave internal doors open for light as well. Another tip if you are out for part

of the day or the whole day close all your shutters and for those with Air Conditioning you will see a difference in your electric bills. The hardest part of this is training your family and friends to follow your lead in keeping your home cool and furniture protected. Good luck with that one – some battles I have won and others I just threw in the towel, it was easier. The Spanish also like their trees near their properties as this gives shade to their homes and something to sit under in their rocking chairs so they can watch the world go by or have a good gossip. Keep your mattresses well aired and wash your mattress and pillow protectors often during the hot months. This helps keep everything smelling a lot sweeter and fresher and good for mattress condition. If you have rooms you rarely use do keep them well aired too, this does help with the humidity problem here in a lot of homes. Also, it is good if you can to pull furniture away a bit from the walls in these rooms and get a bit of an air flow going. It has been known to help with damp patches. SOLTIMES PROPERTY SUPPLEMENT

THE ONLY PROPERTY SUPPLEMENT ON THE COSTAS!!!! LOOKING TO BUY OR RENT? FIND YOUR DREAM HOME INSIDE! Holiday Home Market Picking Up in Coastal Areas

Spain, HousingThe holiday housing market continues to be affected by the adjustment of prices and the absence of new developer activity in the greater part of the Spanish coastal areas. However, according to a report prepared by the real estate appraisal company, Tinsa, entitled “Vivienda en Costa 2015”, in many of these coastal areas the price adjustment is moderating gradually, and there are even a few areas where there are real signs of recovery with regard to prices and the return of construction activity.

The report reveals that the areas where signs of recovery are more evident are Malaga (Marbella and Benahavís) and the Balearic Islands (Palma de Mallorca, Andratx, Calvià and Ibiza). Moreover, there are many more areas that seem to have reached a point of inflexion with respect to the period of adjustment. Among them are Torrevieja, Orihuela and Pilar de Horadada, in Alicante; Sotogrande, Conil, Chiclana and Puerto de Santa Maria, in Cadiz; Nerja, Estepona, Casares and Manilva, in Malaga, and the town of San Juan de los Terreros in Almería. The Canary Islands have also shown signs of recovery, as well as south of Maresme (Barcelona) and the south of Tarragona. Among the towns analysed, the report lists Sitges (Barcelona) as the destination with the highest price, at 2,694 €/m2, followed by Calvià, Andratx and Alcudia, all three in the Balearic Islands. In contrast, the most economical location is

the Castellón town of Almazora (804 €/ m2), which has ousted Puerto Lumbreras (823 €/m2) as the cheapest of the coastal municipalities analysed in the report. Since the onset of the crisis eight years ago, some of the most significant price declines have been recorded in Casares (Málaga), where the average price has dropped by 61.5% since the maximum values of 2007, and Ayamonte (Huelva), Mataró (Barcelona) and Canet d’En Berenguer (Valencia), with declines ranging between 60% and 61%. According to data from the Ministry of Public Works, the five coastal towns (excluding capitals) which registered the greatest number of housing transactions in 2014 were Torrevieja, with 4,136 purchases (3.8% year-on-year), Marbella (3,997, 28.7%), Orihuela (3,527, 20.2%), Mijas (2,384, 14.7%) and Estepona (2,113, 26.6%). The towns with more than 200 transactions annually which increased their number of sales most, percentagewise, in 2014 were Mojácar (Almería), Arucas (Gran Canaria), Torremolinos (Málaga) and Almazora (Castellón), with increases of 105%, 83%, 71% and 70%, respectively. The Ministry’s data also reveals that the greatest increases in transactions on new dwellings, excluding the coastal capitals, were registered in Manilva (193%), Marbella (101%), Orihuela (93%) and Calafell (66%). source: keyero

Having someone to deal with problems immediately, such as a cleaner and handyman, can be invaluable. Don’t forget to cover yourself Firstly, ensure you are allowed to let your property on a short-term basis and that you understand applicable taxation laws, as you must declare income earned from holiday lets. You also need holiday rental liability insurance and ideally a booking contract to confirm details of the reservation, deposit/ refund/cancellation policies and terms and conditions of tenancy. Torrevieja Torrevieja is surrounded by two large and beautiful natural salt water lakes which form the “Salinas de Torrevieja” and are an official Spanish nature reserve. These lakes attract a wide variety of bird life. The entire area around Torrevieja is famous for it’s salt production. Huge salt lakes surround parts of the road down from Alicante airport to Torrevieja. The city of Torrevieja which gets its name from an old tower (old=vieja ; tower=torre), was first mentioned around 1800. It became famous in 1802, when it took over the salt administration from Orihuela. Apart

Why is the lake so pink?

The strange pink-purple colour of the Torrevieja lagoon is caused by pigments of the Halobacterium bacteria which lives in extreme salty environments. This is also foun d in the Dead Sea and the Great Salt Lake. The colour is also caused by an alga called Dunadiella Salina, which is responsi ble for the bright red colour of the lake seen at certain times of the year. The Artemia Salina brine shrimp, which lives in the lake, is also red because it feeds on the bacteria. You will also see the flam ingos turn a lovely shade of pink because they eat the shrimps. The salt is produced from the south-east corner of the pink lago on.

Torrevieja - a good place for a holiday - Torrevieja is a developing tourist centre and one of the most important on the Mediterranean coast. However, you’ll find it is not nearly as commercialised as the Costa Blanca resorts to Torrevieja, on the Costa Blanca, in Spainthe north of Alicante. It still retains that special “Spanish” feel and is in a relaxed environment. The concentration of salt and the temperature, combine to endow Torrevieja and nearby areas with a particularly healthy micro-climate, recommended by doctors for its beneficial properties. Bathing in the salt lagoons is also becoming popular for many medicinal reasons. The weather in Torrevieja makes it an ideal location for year round holiday activities, especially if you want to fulfil that yearning for some sunshine during those dreary winter months in the UK. On average, Torrevieja enjoys 320 days of sunshine per year and an average daily temperature of 17 degrees centigrade. Temperatures in July and August are typically 30 degrees centigrade. Many people prefer the months when the weather can be near perfect: April, May, June, September, October and November.

Fiestas in Torrevieja Torrevieja is famous in Spain for it’s many fiestas and for more details on the fiestas in Torrevieja, click here: fiestas in Torrevieja - the biggest fiesta being the Habaneras festival in August. For forty years, every August, Torrevieja has held its traditional Competition of Habaneras and Polyphony, which now has an international character, since it is one of the greatest cultural celebrations in Europe. Voices from all over the world come together in Torrevieja, and the Habanera sings its way out of the competition precincts, and becomes the folklore of the locals. For a whole week, Torrevieja sways to the rhythm of the habanera, with its tropical flavour from Cuba. The competition awakes the interest of thousands of people throughout Spain, who experience it each year in Torrevieja.

Spanish government expands “golden visas” for property purchasers scheme

Non-EU nationals investing 500,000 euros in Spanish property can bring their families to live in Spain In a continuation of their efforts to attract foreign buyers to the property market, the Spanish government has announced that it intends to widen the residency-for-purchases scheme which it set up in late 2013, allowing [Image: Spanish government expands “golden visas” for property purchasers scheme] all those investing over 500,000 euros in Spanish property to qualify automatically for residency permits in this country.

but also to work here. The issuing of these permits was designed to attract Russian and Chinese investors to Spain – those within the EU already have relatively easy access to residence permits – and it is likely that the widening of the terms will attract more of these potential property purchasers.

This scheme is also available for those investing two million euros in public debt or one million in Spanish businesses. It was slow to take off, with only 72 non-EU nationals taking advantage in the first six months, but over the next six months a further 248 received residence permits in this way. In the light of the increased interest, the terms are now to be widened to include not only investors but also the children and parents of those who wish to move to Spain: this courtesy has hitherto been extended only to spouses and children aged under 18. Non-married partners and adult children are now to be included on certain conditions. In addition, the intention now is for an investment of a million euros or a property purchase of half a million euros in Spain to entitle the person concerned not only to live in this country

Another aim of the 30-odd modifications to the existing law concerning the issue of residency permits to non-EU nationals is to bring Spain into line with the EU Directive regarding conditions of entry for those who are transferred to this country by their employers. spanishpropertyneews

This is an update on the progress of Immo-Carlos since the opening of our new office on 2nd February 2015 (La Plaza Nueva, numero 10, Albox). We have seen an increase in both leads and new properties. I (Carlos) have been focusing on the Belgium market for some time now and this has been a good steady flow, allowing me to ride through the crisis. However, now that we have grown (with our new office and English salesman, Gavin) we are finding ourselves just as busy with the British market. This is partly due to the pound bouncing back, but also it is down to our combined experience of 16 years here in Spain, our attention to detail and professional attitude. My new salesman, Gavin and Myself have known each other since I arrived here in Spain some 8 years ago and we are in fact best friends. We have planned and chatted about this for a long time and it is wonderful when things come together as you visualize them. This gives a fantastic atmosphere in the office, which comes across to both buyers and sellers alike. We are very pleased with the results from our new office so far and would like to invite you all to pop in and meet us!! So if you are looking to purchase a property in Spain or to sell here? Pop in and find out what we can do for you… If you want to get the right price for you home or you are still trying to find your dream home? Just look us up and you won’t be disappointed!!

Spanish property market still on a roller coaster

The roller coaster nature of the Spanish property market recovery is laid bare with the latest data on prices showing that the slowdown has not yet gone, nor has the difference between official figures and those from real estate firms. The latest figures from valuations company Tinsa show that at a national level property prices are still falling although there are regions where they are rising while the latest data from the Housing Department show prices falling slightly. The Tinsa data for May, based on the company’s own valuations, shows that average national house prices were down 3.6% year on year but this global figure hides considerable regional variations. For example the biggest price falls are in provincial capitals and large cities with a decline of 4.9%, while house prices on the Mediterranean coast were down 2.3% and in the Balearics and Canaries there was a fall of 2.1%. However, year on year house prices on the coast are up 1.4% compared to May 2014 but are still down 48.8% compared to the peak of the market and according to Tinsa the national average peak to present fall is 42.1%. According to the government figures the average price for Spanish property fell a 0.11% in the first three months of this year, the smallest quarterly decline since the economic crisis began and down from a fall of 0.36%

O

22

in the last quarter of 2014. This takes the average property price to €1,458 per square meter and this is down 36.3%, adjusting for inflation, since the peak of the market in 2008 when it was €2,100 per square metre. A regional breakdown of the figures shows that seven autonomous regions registered year on year price growth led by the Canaries up by 3.56%, Aragon up 1.9%, Madrid up 1.67%, the Valencian Community up 0.69%, Extremadura up 0.57%, the Balearics up 0.1% and Andalusia up 0.05%. The rest of Spain is still seeing annual price decreases. In Asturias prices have fallen by 6.53 year on year, by 3.72% in Castilla-León, by 3.15% in Navarra, by 2.29% in Galicia, and by 1.47% in the Basque Country. According to the Housing Price Index (HPI) published by the National Statistics Institute, the price of homes rose by 1.5% in the first quarter of the year, compared to the same period of 2014, which is below the 1.8% price increase recorded at the end of 2014. But the index has recorded four consecutive quarters of year on year increases following six years of declines. The index also shows that prices for new homes are rising faster than others. Second hand homes say a rise of 1.1% in the first quarter of the year while new home prices rose by 4%. Source: http://www.propertywire. com/

Foreclosures on Primary Residences Fell by 6.9% in Q1

Abandoned, HomesThe number of mortgage foreclosures on homes in Spain stood at 8,802 in the first quarter of the year, a figure which is 6.9% lower than in the same period of 2014, according to the latest foreclosure statistics published on Friday by the National Statistics Institute. In quarterly terms (first quarter of 2015 over the fourth quarter of 2014), the number of foreclosures on primary residences fell by 0.2%. The main objective of this statistic is to provide, on a quarterly basis, the number of certifications of foreclosures initiated and registered in the Property Registers during the quarter of reference, and the Institute points out that not all mortgage foreclosures end up with the eviction of the owners. In the first quarter of 2015, a total of 30,952 foreclosures were initiated, which is 5.2% less than in the same period of 2014,

but 0.9% more than in the last quarter of last year. Of these foreclosures, 29,591 related to urban properties (including dwellings) and 1,361 to rural properties. The number of foreclosures on urban properties declined by 4.9% in relation to the first quarter of 2014, and increased by 0.8% over the previous quarter. Within these proceedings on urban properties, 17,786 corresponded to dwellings, registering a drop of 6.5% year-on-year, and of these, 11,250 were foreclosures on the homes of private individuals, down 7.1% year-on-year. Andalucía was the region to register the most foreclosures on homes in the first quarter, with a total of 5,058, followed by Catalonia (3,584) and Valencia (3,042), while the regions with the least foreclosures were La Rioja and the Basque Country, both with 70 procedures initiated Source: keyero.

The Rise in House Prices Moderates

Holiday, ApartmentThe average price of free housing in Spain slightly moderated its increase at the beginning of 2015. According to the Housing Price Index (HPI) published by the National Statistics Institute this week, the price of homes rose by 1.5% in the first quarter of the year, compared to the same period of 2014, which is below the 1.8% price increase recorded at the end of 2014.

Despite the increase moderating by three tenths quarter-on-quarter, house prices have accumulated four consecutive quarters of year-on-year increases, following six years of declines. The cost of homes began their descent in the second quarter of 2008 (-0.3%) and continued to fall until the second period of 2014, when they rose again after 24 quarters in negative figures. With regard to the type of dwelling, the price of used housing increased by 1.1% in the first quarter, year-on-year, compared with the increase of 1.7% recorded in the previous quarter, while the cost of new housing rose by 4% in the first quarter, which is more than two points higher than the fourth quarter of 2014, and is the highest rate recorded since the second

23

quarter of 2008, when new homes registered a year-on-year increase of 5.3%. Quarter-on-quarter (first quarter of 2015 over the fourth quarter of 2014), free housing prices fell by 0.6%, after registering three consecutive quarters of increases, with new home prices recording a quarter-on-quarter rise of 2.2%, while used housing prices fell by 1%. El Mundo reported that a total of 13 regions presented positive year-on-year rates in the first quarter of the year, while four others registered negative rates. The steepest declines, year-on-year, related to La Rioja (-1.5%) and Navarra (-0.9%), while the greatest increases were recorded in the Balearic Islands (2.8%) and Madrid (2.3%). Source: keyero.

Spanish public debt reaches 98% of GDP; Uber drivers are employees, the devaluation of the Zimbabwean currency and the opening of the new lock gate on the Panama Canal. The Bank of Spain has denied reported wage increases for the Governor and Vice-Governor. It seems Governor Linde had recovered a 5% reduction in salary he voluntarily made during the recession, even so with the correct figures the Governor earned last year 176.000 € and Vice-Governor 203,410 € gross. Spanish public debt reached 98% of GDP in the first quarter of the year at the sum of 1.046 trillion €. The social security budget had a surplus of 24.09 billion, and the most indebted communities were Cataluña, Valencia Community and Andalucía. Regional debt reached all time highs, just before the election with a passive equivalent to 22.5% GDP. The new administrations in Castilla-La Mancha and Valencia Community will find the accounts deeply in debt. The president of Bankia shares the opinion of the IMF that Spain has to continue with reforms. José Ignacio Goirigolzarri assured ‘if we want a cycle of sustainable growth for several years, we have to continue making reforms’. The IMF wants Spain to make sackings easier and cheaper, increase determined taxes such as VAT and extend to co-payment for services in health and education. The new rate against the US dollar will be 35 trillion Zimbabwe dollars, or put in another way for a 100 trillion dollar note issued in 2008 the amount is reduced to 40 cents for every dollar from 250 trillion dollars to 35 trillion dollars in Zimbabwe. The devaluation starts next Monday and will end on September 30. The United States the leading producer of crude in the world and also is now the State which extracts most hydrocarbons, gas and petrol together. The CEO of Twitter, Dick Costolo, has resigned as the expected growth in user numbers and advertising has not arrived. His temporary replacement will be one of the founders of the firm, Jack Dorsey. The new locks on the Panama Canal have started to fill with water. Five pipes of 0.9 metre diameter will send 50,000 cubic metres of water every hour. Spanish company Sacyr reports the new locks will enter service in 2016 with the capacity to transport 12,000 containers, triple the current number. Announcing the number was the president of Sacyr, Manuel Manrique, who noted ‘The Panama Canal is not only Sacyr but an additional 50 small Spanish companies which have each played their part. It’s really a brand for Spain’. The current overspend in international courts is 2 billion €.

Oh to be a cat in Alqueria!

Animals in Alqueria are well fed, well cared for and contented. They don’t get involved in the civil unrest caused by barrio rivalry, they have no enemies, there is no food chain. This applies to the four legged varieties and those with the power of flight. The power of flight is a commodity much sought after by the human population of Alqueria. This is due to the regular arrival of men in cars with blue lights from across the border. But it is the animals we are interested in. Tiberia is the Village cat. Not just an ordinary cat but a very intelligent and motivated cat. She doesn’t belong to anyone, people belong to her. She lives where she wants and owing to her ability to unlock doors, can leave just when she wants. Other cats pay her homage and respect whatever territory she chooses to claim. Her ‘sidekick’ is a part Siamese, part European cat and if she were human would be the archetype blonde bimbo. Unlike the astute Tiberia she is rather slow and timid. Roaming the village is a fat cheeked Iberian Pig which hungrily eats the windfalls from the Holm Oak and gets visibly fatter by the hour. His only concern is his greed. The Villagers intend to name him after a suitable Tory politician, unfortunately they are spoilt for choice. Pound for pound this acorn fed porker is the most valuable asset in Alqueria after the Remitroot crop of course. The Alquerian Hunting Dog is the only true canine aborigine in the Village. Bred

to hunt t h e Alquerian B a c k Fanged N e w t w h i c h is now extinct, not because of over hunting but because the Newts seemed to prefer it that way. The Hunting Dogs now roam the village, unemployed due to the lack of newts. They have placards around their necks. ‘Five children to support. Destitute. Hungry. Please give generously’. The people of Alqueria sympathise with destitute, they themselves are only a Remitroot crop away for the same condition and give generously. These dogs now live in considerable comfort and wonder why they ever hunted newts in the first place. Perhaps the happiest and most contented animal in the Village is Lorenzo, Manuela’s beaver. Fed Remitroot leaves twice daily, which although none addictive are strangely hallucinogenic, the animal thrives. Manuela, while petting this creature will often squeeze it to her ample breast, cradling it in her considerable cleavage. Lorenzo has made it into the ‘Guinness Book of Records’ for being the only beaver ever recorded to grin from ear to ear. If Sartre was right and ‘hell is other people’ then the animals of Alqueria are in heaven.

The Cat That Used To Be Somebody Else’s, Sayyida Al Hurra, likes to perch her Imperial Posterior on the windowsill outside our bedroom, so that she knows the exact second that I wake, and can shimmy round to the kitchen for her breakfast. But now the summer has arrived the bedroom window stays open overnight, covered by the mozzi net. As far as Sayyida was concerned, this was not a problem – she simply jumped up on the windowsill, delicately and with refinement picked the net out of the way with her claws, and came inside. Our bedroom is out of bounds for all animals, especially pre-dawn cats, so I implemented Plan A: Attach strong netting to the rejas on the outside, so that the windowsill was covered, thus she would not be able to jump onto it. I rooted out some netting, measured the rejas, got a long-handled brush, a felt-tip pen and some scissors, and drew a line on the netting where I would have to cut it. (I needed the long-handled brush as a ruler to ensure that I drew a reasonably straight line) Then Pete chipped in with ‘Why don’t you get some plastic saucers, like the ones that go under planters, put some water in them and put them on the windowsill. She’ll soon stop jumping up if she finds she gets wet feet.’ I stared at him, open-mouthed with admiration. What genius! Why hadn’t I thought of that? I tidied away the netting, the long-handled brush, the felt-tip pen and the scissors, fetched the tape measure, got into Henry the

FIRST NATIONAL ANIMAL WELFARE CONFERENCE IN MURCIA

The PAES National Animal Welfare Conference is being held at the Costa Narejos Hotel, Los Alcázares, Murcia 16-18 October 2015 and is believed to be the first of its kind in Spain. Three animal welfare organisations from Murcia and Almeria: ACTIN, San Animal and Cruz Azul, are collaborating on the PAES (Protección Animales España) Project which is creating great initiatives and programmes, including the National Animal Welfare Conference. The conference is aimed at those who would like to learn more about running their own Trap, Neuter and Return campaigns; volunteers involved in shelters, sanctuaries, rescue groups and foster pet parents, as well as anyone who loves animals and wants to get involved. Delegates will be able to learn about the lifesaving changes taking place across the country and the organisers are confident that they will take those ideas back to pets in shelters, and with rescue groups, in their home towns. “Our mission is to bring together as many people as we can who are involved in animal welfare in Spain, to encourage co-operation and exchange of ideas” said Lyn Baines, Conference Manager. “We will be launching the PAES Project at the conference and we have some exceptional speakers on various topics.” The best-of-the-best experts converge at the PAES National Animal Welfare Conference to share their ideas and expertise: leaders of the no-kill movement, experts in animal care and behaviour, marketing and fundraising experts, professionals from private and public animal

welfare organisations, and more. Topics will include: Animal Welfare Law European Microchip Database Compassion Fatigue & Compassion for Rescuers Knowing Your Boundaries & Keeping Safe Education in Schools and/or Canine Assisted Therapy Animal Behaviour Galgos & Podencos in Spain Animal Fellows & Zooplus World Veterinary Service & Trap, Neuter, Return TNR of Cats – The Spanish Experience Creating & Managing Cat Colonies Communicating Your Cause/Marketing & PR Tips “We have speakers from all over Europe who will share their expertise and experiences with our delegates” commented Lyn. “We know how hard it is running an animal welfare charity, so we have kept the registration donations as low as possible, so that we can engage as many people as possible.” You can find out more about the conference itinerary and how to register by visiting their website: www.proteccionanimales.es or by emailing conf@proteccionanimales.es PAES (Protección Animales España) is a project that has been developed by the ACTIN Association (Charity Number G30866925) with the aim of bringing together associations, protectoras, animalistas, government, authorities and professionals or companies interested in animal welfare so that, by working together, we

The cheap plastic saucers were too wide, so after careful measuring I had to settle for pricier ceramic planters. Nevertheless, it was still better than my own less-than-certain solution, I thought. ‘Will they fit?’ queried Pete. ‘Yes, I measured them.’ I answered smugly, and just to prove it I slid them onto the windowsill, were they sat, a perfect fit. ‘Are they planters or saucers?’ He asked. ‘Planters. Why?’ ‘Because planters have a hole in the bottom to let the water drain out. Saucers don’t.’ Ah! I had noticed that they had holes in the bottom, but never for one instant did it occur to me that this meant that the water would run straight through them! Next week I’ll tell you about Plan C.

Spain. Our aim is to provide a Legal Group, Veterinarian Group and, eventually, our own Rescue Centre, to co-ordinate fostering with the various local rescue charities. This will enable us to monitor dogs and pass them as fit, before they are released to foster homes and, eventually, their forever homes.

Green Bean Basics

Also called string beans, green beans are made up of small seeds encased in long pods. Because beans are harvested while still young, the green pods are tender and edible. In Season: Green beans are available year-round with a peak season of May to October. What to Look For: It’s best to buy green beans that are sold loose rather than in packages so you can pick the freshest ones. They should be crisp and bright green, without blemishes or signs of wilting. For even cooking, choose beans that are of similar size. How to Store: Although they taste best if used right away, green beans can be refrigerated in a sealed plastic bag for up to five days Broadly, tender green beans are classified depending on their growth habits as “bush beans” which stand erect without the need of support, and “Pole Beans” that need climb supports (trellis). The other varieties of unripe fruit pods of bean family include shell beans, Pinto or mottled beans, White beans, Red or kidney beans, Black beans, Pink beans and Yellow wax beans. Almost all the varieties of beans can be available year around across the world. Fava or broad beans (Vicia faba) are large, flattened light green pods usually eaten shelled for their delicious beans. Lima beans (Phaseolus lunatus) are large, plump, palegreen pods with kidney-shaped seeds.

Health benefits of Green beans Fresh green beans are very low in calories (31 caloriess per 100 g of raw bean pods) and contain no saturated fat. Nevertheless, these lean pod vegetables are a very good source of vitamins, minerals, and plant derived micronutrients. The beans are very rich source of dietary fiber (9% per 100g RDA) which acts as a bulk laxative. Fiber helps to protect mucousa in the colon by decreasing its exposure time to toxic substances as well as by binding to cancer-causing chemicals in the gut. Adequate amount of fiber has also been shown to reduce blood cholesterol levels by decreasing reabsorption of cholesterol-binding bile acids in the colon. Green beans contain excellent levels of vitamin A, and health promoting flavonoid poly phenolic antioxidants such as lutein, zea-xanthin and ß-carotene in good amounts. These compounds help act as protective scavengers against oxygen-derived free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS) that play a role in aging and various disease processes. Zea-xanthin, an important dietary carotenoid in the beans, selectively absorbed into the retinal macula lutea in the eyes where it thought to provide antioxidant and protective UV-light filtering functions. It is, therefore, green beans offer some protection in the prevention of age-related macular disease (ARMD) in the elderly. Snap beans are a good source of folates. 100 g fresh beans provide 37 µg or 9% of folates. Folate along with vitamin B-12 is one of the essential components of DNA synthesis and cell division. Good folate diet when given during preconception periods and during pregnancy may help prevent neural-tube defects in the newborn babies. They also carry good amounts of vitamin-B6 (pyridoxine), thiamin (vitamin B-1), and vitamin-C. Consumption of foods rich in vitamin C helps the body develop resistance against infectious agents and scavenge harmful oxygen-free radicals. In addition, beans contain healthy amounts of minerals like iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese, and potassium, which are very essential for body metabolism. Manganese is a co-factor for the antioxidant enzyme, superoxide dismutase, which is a very powerful free radical scavenger. Potassium is an important component of cell and body fluids that helps controlling heart rate and blood pressure.

Apricot Basics

Full of fragrance and sweet, goldenorange apricots are another summer season delicacies of Asian origin. These much-prized fruits were first brought to the Europe by Greeks, who named them as “golden eggs of the sun.”

FOOD & DRINK

Pork, Apricot, and Red-Onion Kebabs Apricot jam with a spark of cayenne makes a spicy-sweet glaze that becomes deliciously caramelized on the grill.

Ingredients:

Botanically, the fruit is closely related to peaches and nectarine; sharing with them in the broader Rosaceae family of fruit-trees in the genus; Prunus. Scientific name: Prunus armenia. Today, some of the chief producing regions of this fruit are Turkey, Iran, Italy, France, Spain, Syria, Greece, and China.

Vegetable oil, for grates 1/4 cup apricot jam 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper Coarse salt and ground pepper 1 pork tenderloin (about 1 pound), cut into 20 cubes (each 1 inch) 8 apricots (about 1 pound), pitted and quartered 1 small red onion, cut into 2-inch wedges, layers separated

Apricot is a medium sized deciduous tree that grows best in well-drained mountainous slope soils. During the spring, it bears plenty of beautiful pinkish-white flowers that attract bees. The fruits have almost uniform size, 4-5 cm in diameter, and weigh about 35 g. In structure; the fruit is a drupe, consisting of a centrally located single pit surrounded by crunchy, aromatic edible flesh. The seed is enclosed in a hard stony shell, often called as “stone.”

Method:

Heat grill to medium; lightly oil grates. Soak four 12-inch wooden skewers in a shallow dish of water for 15 minutes (or use metal ones). Make basting sauce: In a small saucepan, heat jam, cayenne, and 1 tablespoon water over medium-low until jam is liquefied; season with salt and pepper.

Fresh, ripe apricots have a sweet flavor similar to plums. Sun dried organic apricots fruits are nutritiously denser than fresh ones, although they have less in vitamin-C content. Its seed-kernel is also edible and taste like that of almonds. Oil extracted from these kernels has been used in cooking.

Onto each skewer, alternately thread 5 pieces of pork with 8 of apricot and 4 of onion, beginning and ending with pork. Grill kebabs, turning occasionally and brushing with basting sauce, until pork is cooked through and apricots begin to char, 12 to 14 minutes.

Health benefits of apricots Fresh fruits are low in calories, composing just 50 calories per 100 g weight. Nonetheless, they are rich source of dietary fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. The fruits are enriched with numerous health promoting phytochemicals; that helps prevent heart disease, reduce LDL, (“bad cholesterol”) levels and offer protection against cancers. Apricots are excellent sources of vitamin-A, and carotenes. 100 g fresh fruits carry 1926 IU or 64% of dailyrequired levels of vitamin A. Both of these compounds are known to have antioxidant properties and are essential for vision. Vitamin-A is also required for maintaining healthy mucusa and skin. Consumption of natural fruits rich in carotenes helps protect the body from lung and oral cavity cancers.

Fresh fruits contain vitamin-C, another natural anti-oxidant. Vitamin-C helps the body develop resistance against infectious agents and scavenge harmful oxygen-free radicals. They are an also good source of minerals such as potassium, iron, zinc, calcium and manganese. Potassium is a hearthealthy mineral; an important component of cell and body fluids that help regulate heart rate and blood pressure. The total anti-oxidant or ORAC value of raw apricots is 1115 umol TE/100 g. Much of this in these fruits comes from some important health promoting flavonoid poly phenolic anti-oxidants such as lutein, zea xanthin and beta cryptoxanthin. Altogether, these compounds act as protective scavengers against oxygen-derived free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS) that play a role in aging, cancers and various disease process. Further, zea-xanthin, a carotenoid selectively absorbed into the retinal “macula lutea” in the eyes where it is thought to provide anti-oxidant and protective light-filtering functions. Hiking adventures on the Costa Blanca near Alicante Many visit the Costa Blanca but few leave the beaches and head inland to enjoy the delights of the Alicante Mountains. Here there are soaring limestone peaks contrasting with lush terraces and olive groves. Great walking and trekking can be found here and also some very interesting mountain scrambling. These holidays are run by the very experienced and knowledgeable, Gary Hodgson of Tarmachan Mountaineering. The Alicante mountains, Costa Blanca This little known mountainous area in the E of Spain is a beautiful location for walking and trekking. Only an hour inland from the Costa Blanca yet in a totally different world of quiet walking paths amongst the mountains. Spectacular limestone peaks dominate the landscape, a superb climate and lots of rare flora and fauna along with fascinating history make this a great place for a weeks walking holiday. We are based in one of the many small villages dotted amongst the hills with terraces of olive, almond and cherry groves. We'll be walking out from the village, or short drive to the start of the walks

and returning back every day at the hotel. The Frares Pinnacles Limestone Pinnacles Costa Blanca The Frares Pinnacles above the little village of Quatratondeta is a fascinating place of many limestone pinnacles. A maze of ever changing rock formations bring us to the top of the mountain and an easier walk down the hillside. From Quatretondeta we walk along tracks until a cairn marks a path across scree slopes. As we near the pinnacles the path steepens and we eventually gain the main ridge at the summit of Penya Creus. From here we continue along the main ridge to the summit of Serrella. The descent is along a foresty track and

rocky ridge via the top of Alt del Alt (1179m). The Bernia Ridge Bernia Ridge The Bernia Ridge is often described has The Cuillin mountains of Benidorm! A wonderful riidge walk with scrambling in places. To do the whole ridge is a very long day, we do a short section with only easy scrambling yet very spectacular views out towards the sea. The Mar Menor is a huge (135 square kilometres) salt-water lagoon, separated from the Mediterranean by the 24 kilometre long La Manga del Mar Menor (The Strip). The average depth of the Mar Menor is four metres and at its maximum it is seven metres which means that the seabed slopes very gradually and you have to get several hundred metres in before the water is of any depth. The Mar Menor’s salinity provides buoyancy so it is, supposedly, one of the safest places to swim in the world. The mineral-rich waters are said to have therapeutic effects and because of this the area has a significant spa tourism industry. The sludge in the salt pans is also credited with beneficial effects on the health, so there are often dozens of mud people wallowing in it at any one time.Playa Paraiso beach on a summer weekendThe beach at Playa Paraiso is very popular, partly because it has road access right onto the beach. On summer weekends it will be packed with Spanish families, who move most of their house onto the beach. The sea is very shallow, with netted off areas to exclude watersports, fishing and jellyfish. The jellyfish are mainly harmless and much reduced in numbers from previous years, apart from the summer of 2006 when they were back with a vengeance. Playa Honda beach During the week the beach is quiet.

Benefits of Owning a Dog If you have a dog in your life, you already know what joy your pooch brings. We’ll show you some benefits that you might not have known about. Walk down any residential street in the early hours and you’ll find one unescapable fact: Dogs are popular pets. In fact, a recent ACAC study estimates that three million households have at least one canine member of the family. If your family is one of these households, your dog is giving you some surprising benefits. Researchers such as Dr. Bradley Smith have found that having a pet can significantly improve your quality of life.

COMPANIONSHIP You already know how good a friend your dog can be. What you might not have noticed is how much more you talk to other people when you’re out with your dog. You’re simply more likely to interact with other humans when your dog is with you than when you are out for a walk by yourself.

EXERCISE Having a dog also increases the chances you’ll go for walks and play in the park. It’s harder to skip your morning run when your exercise partner is bouncing excitedly at the door

APAH

Space for a little one? Tammy is a sweet, medium sized dog who was rescued by APAH Animal R e s c u e when she was a small puppy and is currently being cared for in their kennels. To arrange to meet Tammy, please call 630 422 563 or 616 210 850.

with his leash in his mouth. How can you tell him you want to skip walkies today? Evidence is starting to show that children with dogs have a 50% lower chance of being overweight, as compared with those without. With all the running and walking involved in playing with the family dog, even in the house, maybe this isn’t so surprising after all.

NURTURING You might have noticed that families are smaller these days. Most people feel a need to nurture that used to be fulfilled by raising a baby or helping to take care of smaller siblings. For people without children and children in small families dogs are increasingly fulfilling the role of substitute child or sibling. The dog gives them someone to care for and nurture with all the positive physical and mental benefits that come with doing so.

EMPATHY Perhaps the practice in nurturing is the reason behind the observation that kids with dogs tend to be more empathetic than other kids, all else being equal. They also tend to be more popular with their schoolmates and have healthy selfesteem. These are all good things for a child’s emotional and social development, whatever the connection with their canine friend might be.

SOCIAL CAPITAL Dog-owners tend to interact with other dog-owners in their neighbourhoods. This is true of most groups of people brought together by a common interest, but dog-owners might well meet up several times a day, by chance or design, during walks and playtime at the park. This frequent interaction strengthens the entire community.

Due to the kitten season, APAH has lots of lovely kittens who are all looking for their first loving home. They vary in age and colour but after their terrible start in life, they all need one thing, someone to love and care for them. To arrange to visit APAH's Cattery please call 630 422 563 or 616 210 850..

higher reading levels than those children who don’t. It’s great for the child and the dog: the dog gets attention and the child gets reading practice. Playing “teacher” with a canine pupil is fun, anyway.

MEDICAL BENEFITS Some researchers have noticed that pet-owners tend to have shorter stays in the hospital, fewer visits to the doctor’s office, and lower levels of stress overall. Having a pet might also lower your risk of heart disease, by possibly as much as 4%. If this turns out to be true over the long term, that would be a benefit similar to going on a low-salt diet.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? Many of the studies looking into the benefits of pet ownership took into account differences of wealth and social standing. As a result, the benefits of dog ownership are believed to be connected to the pet directly, and not just linked to having the money and leisure to be able to afford a dog. It’s good to know that having a dog is good for you. However, it is not a wise plan to purchase a pet with only these benefits in mind. Remember that the pooch is a living creature with its own physical and emotional needs. https://www.lovethatpet.com

Book Review

The Assassin’s Mark David Ebsworth (pen name)

“The dead are sacred. Impartial. Unbiased. So Franco runs his tours on the strength of them. And just being able to run them shows that the Nationalists are legitimate. Winning.” It’s hard to imagine going on a tour of northern Spain during the Spanish civil war in 1938 and being guaranteed a safe passage? Was that possible when the war was still raging? On the one hand there was plenty of evidence of the abject poverty and devastation although the tourists generally had lavish accommodation, experiencing the wonderful Spanish cuisine whilst others starved. Living in this luxury inoculates us from the horrors of it all. The tours had been organised by Franco and boasted of witnessing atrocities in defeating and annihilating the Reds. A one-sided lesson. It’s even harder to imagine being taken hostage and used as a pawn in a deadly political game. Seeing history in the making or being a part of that history where your life is endangered. This is what makes this book riveting from beginning to end. It is deemed a crazy assignment for Jack Telford, a socialist reporter, 30 years of age, working for Reynold’s News, down to earth, sensitive and determined to discover the real truth not Franco’s propaganda. He is an interesting character, extremely credible but haunted by his father’s suicide. His father’s ghostly presence and his taunting of Jack’s pacifistic views eventually drive him over the edge. It’s unusual for battlefield tours to be organised while the war’s still being fought.” But it did happen. Jack’s companions, on first sight appear to be fascists with affiliations towards Franco and Hitler but all is not what it seems. This is what I liked about the story. The reader discovers the truth at the same time as Jack and usually it is too late to do anything about it. Trust no-one. Betrayal is the key word: Not everybody on this little adventure is exactly what they seem. An enigma but who is able to unravel it? His editor Sydney Elliott wants the real story not propaganda and Jack decides to write about the

common man-the people’s revolution not about Franco. You never saw such a gap between rich and poor. Ordinary people fighting a feudal aristocracy and a feudal church. The itinerary covered towns such as San Sebastian, Durango, Bilbao, Santander, Gijon, Ovieda and Guernica. At the start of the tour Jack is disturbed by the inexplicable and gruesome death of one of the tourists which has a profound effect on him and he imagines a hooded figure holding out the poisoned apple towards him. Suspense builds up with the revelation that a man half hidden in the shadows appears to be watching the group closely and following their every move. The suspense is chilling and the first major climax happens at the Cueva de la Santina in Covadonga, a religious shrine where the dwindling group are held hostage by the Machados and treated like bargaining chips or hostages of war by the Vice Consul in San Sebastian, Fielding. Tourists under threat. The panic and fear feels real beyond words. Ironically, Jack’s article emerges from this terrifying experience as he surprisingly gains the trust and friendship of the Machados with his Esperanto, learning the full extent of their hardships and brutal losses, their persecutions. It’s a painful story but a necessary one to tell. There are hints of assassinations shrouded in mystery until the end. The guide, Murphy was tied to the rails, arms spread-eagled, crucified in a sitting position against the railings with his fascist uniform removed by the Machados. He was a sitting target, a sacrificial lamb. A human barricade. What a startlingly shocking and pessimistic outlook for Jack and companions. The brutal conclusion was that in war there was simply one truth: You identified your mortal enemies, those who would

KILL you without hesitation, and you killed them first? Simple survival ethics-KILL OR BE KILLED. With this realisation Jack’s world became an empty void. Terror, bedlam and hysteria dominate this climax which is frighteningly credible.

More martyrs dying for a cause, a touch of romance and rivalry between a Reuters journalist, Carter-Holt based on Kim Philby’s early espionage career that Jack is paradoxically attracted to and repelled by. The final climax culminates in a visit to Santiago to meet Franco in person and a mad cap plan involving an Agfa camera that is foiled. Is this the attempted assassination? The Assassin’s Mark? At the end, Jack’s life becomes meaningless and his soul becomes shattered and destroyed. He is driven on by his demons to fight instead of remaining the pacifist coward sitting on the fence. He had been gullible and drawn into a web so he put into practice his maxim of: kill or be killed. His article was published and he successfully managed to expose the lies being perpetrated by Franco’s propaganda team in relation to the legitimate Republic Government. We live like animals. We have lived like this for five hundred years. The story is moving, realistic and frighteningly accurate. This was the ultimate sacrifice and you’ll have to read it to understand what I mean! Road test: Renault Kadjar 4x4 diesel Does the Renault Kadjar crossover make more or less sense with 4x4 underpinnings and a modicum of off-road ability? The Renault Kadjar is a great family
car for those who are looking for something a little more interesting than a normal hatchback. We think
that it could well be the best crossover available right now, and although the 1.6-litre diesel all-wheel-drive model won’t be the biggest seller, it does provide added depth to the range with specific appeal to those who plan to tow
or even venture off-road. The Renault Kadjar is the company’s answer to the Nissan Qashqai, with which it shares many of its parts. And just like its sister car, the Kadjar is available with all-wheel drive for those after a cool-looking motor with decent towing capability and a modicum of off-road ability. We’ve already tested the 1.2-litre petrol Kadjar in Issue 1,374, and were mightily impressed. On the whole the crossover is comfortable, very practical, drives well and looks stylish. It’s relaxing to travel in, too, bar a bit of wind whistle from the A-pillars, slight engine noise under acceleration and a little tyre roar on rough surfaces – which is less noticeable on the smaller 17-inch alloys of the lower-spec Dynamic Nav tested here. This all-wheel-drive model also features the range-topping 128bhp 1.6-litre diesel. It provides substantially more pulling power than the petrol, making it a better choice for high-mileage drivers, with 320Nm of torque available from only 1,750rpm. It provides good in-gear punch, taking the strain out of overtaking at motorway speeds, and the extra grunt means it can tow a trailer of up to 1,800kg – that’s 300kg more than the petrol. When worked hard the engine does emit that tell-tale diesel rattle, but it quietens down when cruising. Our test car’s all-wheel-drive system – which is available only with the 1.6-litre dCi – can send up to 50 per cent of the power to the rear wheels when the fronts start to slip, or you can lock it in 4x4 mode at lower speeds. We tried the car on a very mild off-road route and only ever saw a maximum of 10 per cent of the power transferred to the rear wheels on the on-board computer. And this highlights a key point: few people will ever need the extra grip over the front-wheel-drive car. For starters, the 4WD costs £1,500 more and economy drops from 62.8mpg to 57.6mpg. Also, it’s one second slower from With the Mercedes S-Class shifting 0-62mph at 11 seconds, due to the extra weight. Really, though, sprint times over 100,000 units last year, and an are less relevant for this type of car. Engine flexibility is key and, although we’ve all-new BMW 7 Series ready to roll, yet to test it, we expect the 74.3mpg 1.5-litre diesel will be punchy enough for Jaguar needed to respond to keep most people – and it offers a further £1,200 saving. its XJ flagship relevant. echoing the new ‘J-signature’ in the tail-lights. A gloss black insert on the rear bumper with a thin chrome insert and oval exhaust finishers complete the gentle makeover. Inside, the big story is a new InControl Touch Pro infotainment system with a customisable eightinch touchscreen that’s faster and better to look at, and allows pinch and zoom and swiping gestures. The 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster can now also be configured to show a full-width navigation display. A new 26-speaker, 1,300W Meridian sound system is added to the options list, while a new rear seat entertainment package is available, adding two widescreen 10.2-inch screens that fold away when not in use. Engine choices include a 335bhp 3.0-litre supercharged V6 petrol, a supercharged V8 with either 503bhp or 542bhp in the XJR, and a heavily upgraded 3.0-litre V6 diesel – now compliant with Euro 6 emissions regulations and producing 296bhp and 700Nm of torque, 25bhp and 100Nm more than before. MAZARRON FC 2 CD ESPARRAGAL 1

Mazarron FC ended the 2014-15 season on the highest possible note with a 2-1 victory in the second leg of the Primera Autonomica Play Off Final at home to CD Esparragal, thus securing promotion by an aggregate score of 4-1. An eleven game unbeaten run has seen the team achieve promotion to the Preferente Autonomica for the first time since the 2011-12 season. Large crowds saw the two legged Play Off Semi Final against CD Juvenia

and the Final against CD Esparragal. Mazarron reached the final by the narrowest margin on the away goals rule after a 2-2 draw in Juvenia was followed by a 1-1 draw in the home game. The Final was virtually settled in the first leg at Esparragal when 2 goals by the league’s leading scorer Tolo gave Mazarron a cushion for the second leg at the Estadio Municipal last Sunday. Tolo was again the match winner with another double, one from the penalty

s p o t , taking his tally to the season to 40 and despite a late Esparragal consolation five minutes from time, Mazarron’s promotion was guaranteed. Scenes of unbridled joy greeted the final whistle as players and supporters alike celebrated a momentous season accompanied by the newly elected Mayoress of Mazarron, Alicia Jimenez. The success is due in no small part to the fantastic efforts of Club President Jose Rodriguez and coach Javi who was plucked from the junior ranks mid way through the previous season and has put together a team not only capable of winning promotion but also of holding its own in the higher division

There have been many important contributions to what has been a superb team effort but special praise must be given to Tolo who reached the fantastic total of 40 goals in the season. The unbeaten run at the end of the season also co-incided with the return to the Club of former of captain Juan Andreo who did not appear on the losing side once. Goalkeepers Conejo and Carrasco also made important contributions during the season, each saving three penalties which secured important points for the Club. The large crowd of Mazarron supporters are now eagerly awaiting the start of the new season in early September. Vamos Mazarron!!!

June 2015

San Miguel Golf Society at Las Colinas and a Hole in One. June 10th 2015.

Thirty-five members and 7 guests attended SMGS’s visit to Las Colinas to take part in a stableford competition. The course was in its usual excellent condition, though the greens unusually slow, and the weather superb. Pretty good scoring was achieved overall and, as last week at Villamartin, a large number of members, 22 in all today, scored 30 points or better, crammed between that and the 37 of two of the winners. The Handicap Secretary is obviously doing something right in bringing the majority of players pretty much together scoring wise, as well as socially by organising a trip to Almerimar in 10 days’ time. A particularly good day for the lady members and visitors playing, taking 1st and 4th in the bronze category, in which most of their handicaps fall, and 3 of the 5 nearest the pin prizes, even though the men’s tees on the par three’s were all forward with the exceptions of holes 5 and 17. And it was on hole 5 that a special event occurred for one of our visitor’s, Mark Roscoe, brother of member Mick, making a hole in one. Long time members scratched their collective heads to try and recall the last time that feat was achieved at a society gathering, and whilst agreeing that it was Marg Birtwistle who made it, the date, so far in the past, could not be conjured up. Well done to Mark and a great way to remember his round with the society. One quarter final match was played in this year’s singles match play competition, Norman Padmore beating Steve Davis in a tight game which went to the 19th before being decided. Norman will now face Mike Jordan in the top half of the draw semi-final.

Stableford results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 4th Marg Birtwistle (33 on CB), 3rd Norman Padmore (33 on CB), 2nd Ray Ewins (33 on CB) and 1st with joint best score of the day, Jacqui Rust 37 points. Silver Category: 4th Laurence Cullen (32 on CB), 3rd Ken Flahery (33 on CB), 2nd Keith Wraithmell (35 on CB), and 1st Alan Gilbert also with 35 points. Gold Category: 4th Steve Davis (33 on CB), 3rd John Aitchison (33 on CB), 2nd, as he was the last time we were at Las Colinas, Theo Boelhouwer with 34 points, and 1st, with the other top score of the day, Vice Captain Barry Roehrig with 37 points. The Abacus was won, with a score that really wasn’t so bad (but which we still won’t mention), by John Bodner. Best visitor prize went to hole in one man Mark Roscoe (31), with the runnerup place going to Vicky O’Connor (24). Nearest the pins (open to all) on the par 3’s were won by Mark Roscoe (with his ace at the 5th), Marg Birtwistle (7), Linda Summerfield (10 and 14), and Theo Boelhouwer (17). Our thanks go to the staff at Las Colinas golf course for their contribution to an enjoyable day. Next week we will be at Saurines Torre near to Balsicas. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs. org or simply give Barry Roehrig a call on 966 731 033 to find out more about the society and its weekly golf get-togethers.

Busters June 2015 golf report We had a shorter journey to the course this month for our June singles stable ford game , the outing had twenty six members who competed to play in our competition at the par seventy three Vistabella golf course near Los Montesinos. This challenging course is eleven holes so seven holes are played twice , however from different tee boxes , the course was made a little more tricky on this day with several of the pin positions being tucked away behind bunkers , making the shots into the green a lot more difficult for most of us. We only had one player who made even par but several of our players did score over thirty and with those pin positions that wasn’t easy , the course has two par threes so one of those is played twice , this being the hundred and sixty metre 4/15 hole giving the course just three par threes in total. Hopefully in the near future the owners of the course will be going to be make it into eighteen holes which should then have four different par threes ( lets hope they can make them shorter than the existing two which are both over one hundred and sixty metres long ) , but at the end of the day the course was as usual in superb condition , and enjoyed by all . As customary for our presentation today we returned to the Mini Golf bar

close to Quesada’s arches where we were welcomed by the bars friendly staff , and treated to some excellent sausage chips with bread and butter , swilled down by most of our players with a couple of pints . Onto our presentation, today’s prizes were won by , on the par threes N T P s the fourth hole won by Alan Gifford , the eighth by Lee Barber and Phil Pettican won the fifteenth , they all had a sleeve of three Srixon golf balls , our best front nine was won by Nikki Ead on count back with seventeen points , Lee Barber took the back nine with nineteen points ,both player’s received cash prizes , in third place today with thirty four points ,winning on count back again with thirty three points was Bill Peters , in second place the runner up was Phil Pettican with thirty four points, and our winner for the day with thirty six points was Alan Gifford , all received cash prizes , well done to all who managed to score over thirty points today . Finally the soccer card today was deservedly won by Brian Jones having selected ‘ Burnley ‘ , Brian is always there to help out so can I say many thanks to him for having the results of the score cards again checked and in order for me when I returned to the bar and not forgetting that he also sells our soccer card prior to the games commencing . Next month we look forward to playing at Campo de Golf Alicante .

Women's World Cup 2015 wide open for England

Women's World Cup: England v Colombia, Group F Date: 17 June. Kick-off: 21:00 BST. Venue: Olympic Stadium, Montreal. Coverage: Watch live on BBC Three and online, plus commentary on BBC Radio 5 live and text coverage on the BBC Sport website England can win the Women's World Cup and Colombia's victory over France proved the tournament is wide open, says forward Toni Duggan. The Lionesses face Colombia - the group's lowest-ranked side - in their final group game on Wednesday. "The Colombia win didn't change our goal. We still want to win this World Cup and we still can," said Duggan. "Colombia are tough but that's the beauty of the World Cup - everyone can beat everyone." England began their campaign with a 1-0 loss to France, who are third in the world, but then recovered with a 2-1 win over 25th-ranked Mexico on Saturday

in Moncton. They now face a Colombia side who, despite being 28th in the world, sit top of Group F after drawing 1-1 with Mexico in their opening match and then producing the shock of the tournament with a 2-0 victory over France. With three teams progressing to the second round from four of the six groups in the World Cup, the battle to qualify remains wide open with one match to play. Sixth-ranked England will probably need at least a point against Colombia to be sure of their qualification. They will draw confidence from their performance in the win over Mexico, where forward Fran Kirby scored the opener in her first World Cup start. The Reading striker, 21, is the only player in England's squad from the second tier of the Women's Super League. Kirby quit football four years ago after suffering from depression following the death of her mother. But she said she wants to create "more memories" in her first major tournament. "Colombia is an even bigger game for us now with their result against France," Kirby said. "We are buzzing and the mood is going to be great but we need to make sure we keep focus and get the job done in Montreal." BBC

Keith Thurman confirms he wants to fight Floyd Mayweather

WBA world welterweight champion Keith Thurman is confident of securing a big-money fight with Floyd Mayweather. Thurman defends his title against Luis Collazo on July 11 in Tampa and believes another eye-catching performance can help him earn a bout with WBA (super), WBO and WBC champion Mayweather. Mayweather is now 38 but with the likes of Thurman and Amir Khan making public their desire to face him in one last ‘super-fight’, ‘Money’ may try to finish his career by reaching 49 fights unbeaten. Thurman - unbeaten in his 25 bouts as a professional - told On the Ropes Boxing Radio: “We’re definitely in line for the Mayweather shot. We’ve been in line for the Mayweather shot for a minute but it doesn’t matter who I fight in the welterweight division. “I would love Floyd Mayweather - he’s the man. Until the man retires, he’s the man. “I want to be a legend and the best way to become a legend is by taking out a legend, and that would be Floyd Mayweather.” Thurman, 26, secured the WBA crown when he outclassed Robert Guerrero over 12 rounds in Las Vegas back in March and will be making his first defence against Collazo.

Olympic Games: Bridge, chess & tug of war apply for 2020 inclusion Would you consider chess and bridge to be sports?

Well, whatever your view, you might be watching them in the 2020 Olympics. The genteel pursuits are among 26 sports to apply for inclusion in the Tokyo Games. Air sports, floorball, flying disc, tug of war, sumo, polo, orienteering, korfball, dance sport, racquetball, roller sports, wakeboard and wushu have also put in a formal request to be part of the programme. Floorball is a type of floor hockey featuring six players, while wushu is derived from traditional Chinese martial arts. More mainstream sports to apply include American football, karate, squash, netball and bowls, which proved so popular at last year's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The inclusion of bridge or chess would pave the way for people of more advanced years to compete at the Olympics. The oldest Olympian is Swedish shooter Oscar Swahn, who was 72 when he won silver in the double shot running deer contest at the 1920 Games in Antwerp. The United States team competing in the 1908 London Olympics at the White City Stadium Tug of war was part of the Olympic programme between 1908 and 1920 with Great Britain winning

five medals, including two golds. The combined bid from baseball and softball, dropped after the 2008 Beijing Games, is considered a favourite because of the popularity of those sports in Japan. A shortlist will be announced on 22 June with finalists making a presentation in Tokyo in August, before organisers make recommendations to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) by 30 September. The IOC will make a final decision in August 2016, when it meets ahead of the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Toshiro Muto, chief executive officer of the Tokyo organising committee, said that sports "must be popular with young people, give momentum to Tokyo 2020 and meet IOC standards" to be considered for inclusion. Under the IOC's 'Olympic Agenda 2020' reforms, host cities can propose the addition of one or more sports for their Games. The 28-sport cap for future summer Olympics has been dropped but they will be restricted to 10,500 athletes and 310 events. Source: BBC
