Real Madrid star James Rodriguez was pursued by an unmarked police car to the club’s training ground for allegedly speeding at 200 kilometres per hour, Madrid sports daily AS reported on Friday. Two Spanish police officers have been caught on camera throwing an apparently disabled Moroccan woman from her wheelchair onto the street. They defended their actions, saying she entered the country illegally and alleging she was in “perfect” health.

The incident was reported to have taken place in the Spanish border town of Beni Ansar in Melilla on Tuesday. Two police officers in uniform were pushing the woman in the wheelchair down a passage way. However, as soon as they reached a gate, they proceeded to remove the woman and dump her on the pavement. The Moroccan woman is seen lying motionless as the officers turn around and walk away. The Spanish cops defended their actions, alleging that the “disabled” woman was well known to the authorities and border officials. They said she had tried to enter Spain illegally on a number of occasions without the necessary documentation. The woman was also said to have undergone a medical examination just prior to her expulsion from Spain, with doctors saying she was in “perfect” health. Melilla is a Spanish enclave on the African continent, which is a major entry point for immigrants trying to enter the European country. In May, 2014, Morocco built a five-meter-high wall, topped with blades and barbed wire, on the Melilla to keep immigrants out. Two months ago, around 1,000 people tried to climb over a triple layer wire fence which had been erected by the Spanish authorities. About half of those trying to make it into Spain were successful.

Sales fever breaks out in Spain

SALES season has kicked off in Spain with bargains of up to 70% off to be found on the high street – and retailers hope their buoyant Christmas will continue as families stock up on presents to give out on Twelfth Night, or the 'Three Kings'. From Saturday, January 2 through to late February – or possibly later if stocks last – all types of stores and especially clothing retailers will slice their prices. Typical discounts at the start of the sales period tend to be around 30% to 50%, but can reach 70% or 80% towards the end. Strictly Grand Final 2015

Well there was certainly some controversy in the press after last weeks dance off result with Len and Anton being put into the firing line by the Beeb! In my opinion the wrong result came out, I agreed with Craig putting Anita into the final. Even though the judges voted on the final, no part of the result would be considered as it was purely down to public vote to crown the ‘strictly’ champion 2015. The first dances were chosen by the judges and opening the show were Jay McGuinness and Aliona with a Quickstep and looking to improve on his performance from week 4, his lowest score in the competition. Despite Jay always being in control, there was quite a bit of gapping evident and at times was guilty of sticking his bottom out! That said there was some very complex choreography well performed. I awarded him 9 and the judges 36. Next were Georgia May Foote and Giovanni and their Rumba from week 3 where they were accused of having insufficient Rumba choreography and lacking in hip action. Georgia corrected the hip action and Giovanni had inserted more basic and this was so nearly a perfect performance, unfortunately, in one part of the choreography Georgia had a fast spin and had she have settled into her hip on exit would have controlled the speed, she didn’t and overbalanced. Such a pity I gave her 9 and the judges 36. Kellie Bright and Kevin were given a Tango from week 1. The music still too fast a 60s theme, she was still too far up, needed to be lower into the floor which would have produced a cleaner staccatto action. I awarded her 8 and the judges for some reason must have been watching a different dance to mine awarded her a perfect score of 40? Closing the first dance were Katie Derham and Anton with a Quickstep from week 7. Still littered with errors or hiccups she somehow managed to keep it going, she was out of her depth against her fellow competitors. The further into the routine she went the worse it went! I gave her 7 and the judges 31. The second dances performed were the show dances and the ones everyone was waiting to see with a no holds barred policy. Jay and Aliona went for a medley

I awarded her 9 and the judges 36. Kellie and Kevin were next with Lindy Hop. An action packed full on dance filled with lifts and tricks which was perfectly matched throughout. I gave them a 10 and the judges another perfect score of 40. Closing this section were Katie and Anton with a powerful piece of music Oh Fortuna. I have to say that the music far outweighed the performance which I found lack lustre at best, and showing Anton struggling to keep Katie aloft in the lifts. I gave them 7 and the judges 31.

I have to say I was left a little underwhelmed by both the semi final and the final. The quality of dancers was the highest I have ever seen in any series but for some reason and after a couple of strong challengers were eliminated along the way, it failed to give me the ‘wow’ factor that we have seen in previous years. I have to say that the quality of Jays dancing has been the best ever seen from a celebrity but he just lacked the extrovert personality to really pack a punch. He was a deserved winner everything taken into consideration, but for me on the night Kellie was the stronger challenge and deserved to win, but there goes the public vote for you! I will soon be reporting on the Christmas Special and I hope you all had a great Christmas, and I wiosh you all a happy and prosperous 2016. Come and get rid of those excess calories in 2016 at one of our classes, where you will have fun and meet a great group of friends, but in the meantime Keep Dancing!

Things are much the same in the Rainbow Camp – dogs, cats, fish, terrapins and garden all move along with that same time! Spring is springing in the garden as it does here in Spain in January and seems to come to life to get its strength before the sun hits us! We have“fostered”a dog that is due to go to Germany in February, what a girl Lucy is, from a shy probably ill treated and emaciated pup to a delightful young girl – it will be hard to let her go but it will be in the knowledge she is going to a good home and that we can take on another to help on its way. Do you love dogs but do not want an all year commitment or perhaps you come and go from the UK – consider a foster – great company but no long term commitment – if you say your available dates the charity we work with will accommodate those and not leave you with a “stranded” dog! We went last Saturday to see “Bridge of Spies” – great film – and there were four of us in the cinema! The other two were Spanish improving their English! Cinema IS the best place to see a film, your TV does, in general, not do it justice... use it or loose it! Great night out for euro 7.00 for the film and a good meal after in town! Lots of channels have gone to their “Christmas Edition” – titles not that important - but only official SKY and FREESAT boxes will see these channels unless you perform a channel scan now and again after the festivities. How is your TV reception? The signal strengths seem to be up and down like the proverbial yoyo! If you are experiencing any problems why not get us to have a look and be sure all the equipment you have is doing the best it can? Often a dish tweak or a new cable connector can make

all the difference…don’t miss the last 10 minutes of that drama! – It’s the bit you really want to see! We gets lots of enquiries about internet TV and why ours costs yearly when some seem to be free…firstly check how long the advertiser has been in business and the impossible question to get an answer – how long do they intend to stay in business? Are they here to make a quick euro and run? The question I always ask is “who will maintain the system when it goes wrong” and believe me it will! If no one is getting paid on an ongoing basis who will fix it when it goes down? All these internet based systems are – in terms of BBC / ITV / SKY - very small businesses... TV signals do not just appear with no maintenance requirements. Our system is not perfect... As are none...but it does have 24/7 maintenance engineers and it will be fixed if it goes wrong as soon as is possible. Some systems are “off” for a few days and often a weekend when no one wants to work! You do pay your money and take your choice but beware, many have been stung! As in any place you spend your hard earned money, check out the supplier before you spend! there are so many “Master Builders” in Spain who have just built a garden wall in the UK! Guardia Civil officers save Torrevieja man from burning home

A PENSIONER is in a critical condition after a fire broke out at his home in Torrevieja (Alicante province) – although if it had not been for the prompt actions of three brave Guardia Civil officers, he would not be alive today. They were alerted by a local resident who went to the police station in person at around 07.30hrs on New Year's Day, and rushed round to the property where they saw flames raging and smoke gushing out. Not knowing whether the house was occupied, officers broke down the door

when they got no response and found a 75-year-old man unconscious on the sofa, with numerous severe burns. Paramedics gave him first aid after the three Guardia Civil officers dragged him out of the burning building. The pensioner was firstly taken to Torrevieja University Hospital, but given the serious nature of his injuries, he was rushed to the burns unit at Alicante General Hospital. He is still said to be in a critical condition, 48 hours after he was rescued from the flames. thinkspain.com

Hundreds of thousands of 'forgotten' and never-opened books found in Valencia warehouse

O V E R 375,000 u n r e a d published books have been found stashed in a warehouse in Riba-roja ( Va l e n c i a province) belonging to and printed by the regional government, but which have never seen the light of day. Around 10,000 of these are textbooks or legal texts which are now obsolete and will have to be destroyed and their paper recycled. Most are over 30 years old, out of date, and were printed when Spain was first divided up into 17 autonomouslygoverned regions. They sat heaped up on 900 pallets in the warehouse, rented from the company Loginser – a partner in Spain's post office service, Correos – for the past two years at €4,500 a month with a contract due to end in May this year. Among the 'forgotten' books are around 2,100 titles, penned by public institutions such as the IVAM modern art museum in Valencia, the regional library and ministers, with 2,500 complete works of Xavier Casp, 1,500 about Julio González – each worth €300 – and 20 copies of the Notebooks from the IVAM, of which nearly 50,000 were printed at a cost of over €90,000. Even cookbooks – 65,000 of them – have been uncovered. Many of the volumes were printed by publishers who had not gone through the required sealed bidding and application process, and a number of these firms were outside the region. “We have seen that there has never been any clear policies concerning regional government publishing,” said a spokesman for the now-reigning socialist party. “It seems to have been completely arbitrary and any minister or public body who felt like it published something wherever they wanted, with no technical criteria taken into account. “The worst of it is that books have been printed and taken straight to the

warehouse, w h e r e they have s t a y e d ever since and never been used for their purpose – and it is clear in some cases that the books are directly related to the publishers themselves. “Former regional presidents, ministers and other top-flight political figureheads wanted their names up in lights, so they wrote something and arranged to get it printed by a nonindependent publisher.” For the books with content which is still relevant, the new regional government – elected in May 2015 – has contacted all 542 town councils in the Comunidad Valenciana to offer them batches of 60 copies, valued at €1,300 each, so their public libraries can stock them. So far, 244 town halls have responded positively. Others will be stocked at the regional government's official bookshop, Llig ('read', in the imperative, in valenciano), which has branches in the cities of Castellón, Valencia and Alicante, as well as an online service. The socialist regional cabinet team says the 65,000 recipe books are signed by María Ángels Ramón-Llin, who was agriculture minister for Valencia at the time of publication. Around 50,000 copies of manuals on metalwork and toy-making; 5,700 books about the 1953 Spanish film Welcome, Mr Marshall!, by acclaimed director Luis García Berlanga; 7,500 editions titled Basic statute of publicsector employment, which are now years out of date, and 12,000 regional transport infrastructure maps – now obsolete – are among the publications which have never been out of the packaging they arrived in from the original editorial firm. thinkspain.com

Ten Gardening Resolutions for the New Year

If you are like most people, as the New Year approaches you might be thinking about ways to become healthier and more fit. So, why not consider doing the same for your garden? Resolve to create a garden plan so that you will know ahead of time what needs to be done and when. Use the time to look over all the gardening and nursery catalogs that arrive in the mail during winter. Resolve to take the time to draw or write up this plan so that when you go to buy plants, you will know exactly what you need to buy, no more or no less. If you aren’t sure of the growing requirements for different plants consult a good gardening book like the Sunset National Garden Book. One way to create a garden plan is via a gardening journal. However, it doesn’t have to be in book or journal form, it can be a calendar, a spiral notebook, a notebook with pockets, an accordion file, a scrapbook, a photo album, an organizer, it all depends on what you want to use your journal for. Resolve to always plant the right plant in the right location! If you select the wrong plant for a particular location you could end up with a constant maintenance problem. Always remember: different plants have different requirements. Some prefer more sun, some more shade, some can tolerate wind and some cannot. Resolve to never, ever forget about the soil since soil is the number one key to a healthy garden. Learn what needs to be done to amend your soil so your plants get a healthy start. Resolve to focus on conserving water by grouping plants with similar moisture needs together, watering in the early morning when it’s cooler to avoid evaporation and mildew and rot on plants, and incorporating water-wise and native plants. Resolve to always bring the healthiest plants into your garden by purchasing and planting only the healthiest seedlings or plants or start your own plants from seed. Whenever possible, plant disease- and pest-resistant varieties. Resolve to mulch regularly since it conserves water, inhibits weeds and provides an attractive ground cover in your flowerbeds or vegetable garden. How does the fractional CO2 laser work? The fractional CO2 laser takes the CO2 laser beam and fractionates, or pixellates that beam into thousands of tiny little shafts of light. These tiny shafts of light penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin. The skin then repairs those tiny shafts by pushing out the old sun damaged skin and replacing it with new skin. The “collateral” heat damage also helps to shrink existing collagen. Can I do the fractional CO2 laser with other cosmetic treatments? Not the same day generally. The CO2 laser is compatible long term with Botox, Juvederm, Restylane, Sculptra and other laser based technologies like hair removal, Fraxel Restore, IPL, pulsed dye, etc. How long do the effects of a fractional CO2 resurfacing laser treatment last? That depends on how well you protect your skin from the sun and other factors that cause aging like your general health, smoking, changes in weight, etc. If you apply sunscreen and wear brimmed hats, you can maintain the good effects of your CO2 laser treatment for several years. When will I see results? Bear in mind that the fractional CO2 laser can be customized. Treatments can be deeper, with more healing and downtime, or shallower, with less healing time. The deeper the treatment, the better the results generally. But some patients prefer to have two to three treatments that are not as deep so they can avoid a lot of downtime. You will see some immediate results but you won’t see the full results for 3-6 months. After your skin heals, which may take up to 3-14 days; there will be a period of 4 to 6 weeks after that when your skin might be slightly pink. During this period, your skin will feel smoother and looks less blotchy. You can cover with make up in 7 - 10 days as appropriate. As the colour returns to normal, you will see fewer lines, less blotchiness, and more glow. How much do fractional CO2 laser treatments cost? The cost varies depending on the areas to be treated. Expect full face treatments between €500 -€700. Eye and lip area around €200 per session. You’ll get a specific quote on your consultation. You will note that the cost of these treatments is quoted much higher elsewhere in Europe and USA. I am taking into consideration the economic crisis in Spain and have reduced my prices to accommodate. Generally, up to 2 areas at a time can be treated. For example, face and neck or neck and chest, would have different prices. More areas at the same visit are not advised due to the potential toxicity of the numbing cream used prior to the treatment. How are fractional CO2 laser treatments performed? You need to arrive approx an hour before your treatment. The treatment area will be cleaned and numbing cream will be applied to the area to be treated. We also have our patients take an anti-inflammatory or paracetamol which helps to reduce the discomfort. Then you just relax, read, and listen to music, while the numbing cream takes effect. You will be asked to fill in a consent form. After you numb for about 45 minutes the numbing gel will be removed. The treatment takes about an hour for a full face and feels a little like a “pins and needles” sensation. Cool air is blown on the area during the treatment to make it comfortable. The discomfort ranges from mild to moderate (2-5/10), although everyone is different. Treatment times vary. Most people drive to and from their own fractional CO2 laser appointments. But if a relaxant or anti-anxiety tablet is taken you may require someone else to drive after the treatment. Are treatments on the eyelids safe? Yes, because special laser “contact lenses” or protection goggles are used to protect the eye. Numbing eye drops may be placed in the eye before insertion of a contact lens-like eye shield (if required). A protective ointment on the side next to the eye cushions the special shield. The shield fits comfortably within the eye and is easily removed at the end of the treatment. Even our patients who don’t wear contact lenses have been comfortable. The eye treatment is then performed on the upper & lower eyelids. It is normal (as with all areas treated with the fractional CO2 laser) to have swelling and redness for 2-4 days after the treatment, blushing of the skin may carry on for a few weeks after treatment. You also have to avoid all sun exposure during the healing time. Plan on 3-4 weeks for being “camera ready.” What will I look like right after the treatment and what is the healing time? it is recommended that the area is protected with a special dressing, for a

few days after treatment, this will be discussed further on consultation. During the first 24 hours after treatment, your skin may feel as though it is sunburned. Ice packs/frozen peas are used 10 - 15 minutes per hour for the first 5-6 hours after the treatment. Your skin will peel for 2-7 days and will be pink for 3 to 6 weeks. This healing all depends on how deep your treatment is. After a week or so, you can wear make-up to cover the pink. Rarely, bruising may develop, which can take up to two weeks to resolve. Allow 2-4 weeks for weddings, reunions, family pictures, etc just to be safe. Allow longer for body sites like arms or legs. Can I go back to work and activities immediately? No, you will need to take the rest of that day off to ice and care for the treated area. For the lighter fractional CO2 treatments, you will need 3-5 days of downtime. For the deeper treatments, plan on 7-10 days of healing. How many treatments will I need? The number depends on the extent of your sun damage, scarring or wrinkles, and on how much downtime you can accept. If you can tolerate 7 days of downtime, you would generally need only 1 or 3 fractional CO2 treatments but this can vary depending on the depth of wrinkle etc. And more may be required. Usually treatments are at least one month apart. Are there any reasons not to be treated with these lasers? Reasons not to do a fractional laser treatment may include use of medications that increase photosensitivity, use of anticoagulants (some are fine), use of Accutane (isotretinoin) in the last year (vs. 6 months), chemotherapy, history of difficulty healing or scarring, history of bleeding disorders, and pregnancy. Are there any medical or cosmetic side effects? Complications are rare. In order to avoid complications you will be required to use a cream that blocks the production of melanin for up to four weeks before treatment and to resume this after healing for a further two weeks in order to avoid any pigmentation problems. Antibiotics can be used as a precaution to help prevent infections. If you suffer from cold sores you may need to take Aci - clover tablets to help avoid an outbreak. Start taking the tablets one day before your treatment is due. Everyone is individual so things precautions taken may vary between individuals. A full assessment and advice will be given during the consultation process. Here is a list of some of the possible complications of fractional CO2 laser treatments: • Pain. Most people feel very little pain during treatment due to the measures discussed above. Rarely there is mild discomfort for the first day after treatment, but paracetamol is effective for it. • Redness. A pink colour may persist for two weeks to two months after the laser treatment. In rare instances, it may last three to six months. This is more common in patients who have a history of flushing and blushing easily or who already have dilated vessels on the surface of the skin. • Wound Healing. The CO2 laser causes a superficial wound to the skin that takes approximately 4 to 10 days to heal. The superficial injury of the outer layers of the skin may result in mild to moderate swelling. Crusting is rare but peeling is common. Once the surface is treated, it may be sensitive to the sun for approximately 4-6 weeks. • Pigment Changes. The treated area may heal with increased or decreased pigmentation. This is rare and occurs most often in darker skin and 2-6 weeks after treatment. Hyper pigmentation usually fades in three to six months, though rarely pigment changes can be permanent. The use of the hydroquinone 4% is important to help prevent this. • Excessive Swelling. Immediately after laser surgery, there will be swelling of the skin. This is a temporary condition and will resolve over three to seven days. • Scarring. There is a very, very rare chance of scarring. To minimize chances of scarring, it is important to follow post-operative instructions carefully. It is important that any prior history of unfavourable healing be reported. Do not pick! • Infection. Occasional infections can occur. If not treated promptly, these could result in scarring, antibiotics may be advised as a precaution, you need to start taking them on the day of treatment. • Feeling Down. Some people feel a little down during the healing process, this is normal as things always look a little strange whilst healing. Since every patient is an individual, you may not respond exactly the way other people do. Remember – generally your first treatment is not the end result, be patient, after your treatments, the result will continue to improve for up to six months.

There was also much sadness when Anne Kirkbride - Coronation Street's Deirdre Barlow - died from cancer in January. The 60-year-old actress, who starred in the ITV soap for 44 years, was famous for her oversized-spectacle-wearing, gravel-voiced alter ego, whose on-screen imprisonment for a trumped-up fraud conviction led then prime minister Tony Blair to give his support to the "Free The Weatherfield One" campaign.

The nation was united in grief in August when "national treasure" Cilla Black died aged 72.

Hot Chocolate frontman Errol Brown died from liver cancer at his home in the Bahamas in May aged 71.

The Blind Date and Surprise Surprise TV presenter and singer suffered a stroke after falling and hitting her head at her Spanish villa.

Jackie Collins, who sold more than 500 million novels in some 40 countries in her four decades-long career as a writer of raunchy female fiction, died of breast cancer in September, aged 77.

Madrid Province Has Most Empty New Homes

Data from a report on Spain’s housing stock published this week by the property appraisal company, Tinsa, highlights that the price of housing and the stock of empty new homes varies greatly among the country’s provinces, and lists the five provinces with the largest accumulated stocks of empty new homes, in absolute terms. The province with the largest housing stock is Madrid with a total of 35,316 empty new homes. However, Tinsa pointed out that Madrid has important urban developments in progress and a low level of unemployment, at around 15%, which has revived the need for the construction of housing. In the province of Valencia some 23,493 new homes remain empty and the average unemployment rate in the provincial capital stands at around 30%.

Murcia is the third province with most empty new homes, with a total of 22,862, and in the coastal areas where much of the housing construction has been focused in recent years, the average level of unemployment stands at 32.7%.

Britain’s love affair with Spanish property took some serious knocks when the market crashed back in 2008/09, but the latest figures show that Brit’s fondness for Spanish homes has far from faded. In fact, British buyers are surging back to locations like the Costa Blanca in droves. The impact of buyers from overseas in such popular tourist areas is not to be underestimated. According to the latest Alicante market report from Data.kyero. com, median property prices in the area increased by 19.07% in the year to October 2015, with sales to international buyers accounting for 51.88% of transactions (as at Q2 2015). Chris White, Founding Director of Ideal Homes International, comments, “The British love for Spanish property is definitely still burning strong and locations such as the Costa Blanca are those that benefit the most. The attractions are clear – 320 days of sunshine per year, a huge range of beaches, golf courses and other attractions to choose from, a diet recognised by UNESCO and one of the top 10 healthcare services in the world according to figures from the World Health Organization. According to the Emancipation Observatory report on the first quarter of 2015, around 80% of young people in Spain who are under 30 years of age are still living with their parents. The report indicates that these young people would have to devote almost 60% of their salary to gain access to their own home, but that they would need to earn 98.23% more than they presently earn. Moreover, the maximum size of the property they can expect to afford is 50.4 square metres. The Observatory, managed by the Youth Council of Spain, concludes that only 21.5% of under 30-year-olds have managed to emancipate themselves, which in their view “highlights the fragile situation of young people in the labour market and the harsh conditions of the housing market in Spain, which are inaccessible to the purchasing level of the majority”. With regard to employment, the report notes that for those

aged under 25 years the unemployment rate reaches 51.4%, well above the 30.2% rate for those aged between 25 and 29 years, and the 24.1% rate for the population aged 30 to 34. El Mundo reported that statistics from the study also shows that over half of the young working population, specifically 51.7%, have temporary contracts, 44.3% of which are of less than a year’s duration. “Exclusion from the labour market and the precariousness of the jobs accessible to young people are the main causes of the failure to emancipate”, says the Chairman of the Youth Council of Spain, Héctor Saz, who calls for “a labour legislation guaranteeing rights, quality and decent employment conditions for young people and a housing policy that favours the implementation of an independent living project”. kyero.com

AHE Forecasts an Upturn in the Spanish Mortgage Market in 2016 In their December report on 2015 and forecasts for next year, the Spanish Mortgage Association (AHE) indicates that they expect a “clearer” reactivation of the Spanish mortgage market in 2016 in line with the overall improvement in lending activity, while at the same time they warn that the recovery will depend on the consolidation of national economic growth. El Mundo reported that the Association believes that the continued improvement in the employment situation in Spain will bring about a “gradual recovery” in the financing capacity of Spanish households, resulting in the reduction of non-payment of loans and boosting solvency and future borrowing capacity. In a climate of historically low interest rates and inflation, which is expected to close the year with negative rates, the Association points out that the banking system is now healthy “in terms of solvency and liquidity”, and they believe that over the next two years Spain’s real estate sector will “gradually” recover part of the role lost in the years of the crisis “from a prudent perspective, focused on proper risk management”. The report reveals that the rate of decline in lending activity was contained during 2015, noting that: “despite lending to the residential private sector to October 2015 registering a negative year-on-year variation of around 1%, its evolution suggests a clear move towards positive rates in 2016, following at least five years of negative year-on-year rates”. According to the National Statistics Institute’s data, 20% more home mortgage loans were formalised up to October 2015, compared with the same period in 2014, which shows a “gradual strengthening in demand”. In contrast, the data also highlights that the balance of managed mortgage lending continues to reflect the deleveraging of both companies and households, “albeit at a more moderate rate”. In this respect, the balance of managed mortgage lending stood at 695,505 million euros to October 2015, which represents a year-on-year decline of 4.7%, and contrasts with the 7.7% year-on-year decline registered in October of the previous year. The Association forecasts that “maintaining this trend, it is expected that at the end of the year the annual variation of the managed mortgage credit total will stand at around -4%”. The AHE also highlights the “clear stabilisation” in housing prices, with the level of recovery in some zones bringing the overall year-on-year variation in the average price of housing in Spain into positive rates to September 2015, “putting an end to more than 20 quarters of price declines”. Finally, the report indicates that the average rate of indebtedness from January to September 2015 was 11.7%, while in the same period of 2014 it registered an average rate of 13.5%. kyero.com

HOUSE PRICES: Forecasts for 2016 and beyond House prices are rising according to five of the seven indices tracked by Spanish Property Insight (see graph above). The data seems to suggest that years of depression have come to an end. So what do some of the housing market experts regularly quoted in the Spanish press have to say about the outlook for house prices in 2016 and beyond? GONZALO BERNARDOS Economics professor, and director of the master’s degree in real estate at the University of Barcelona, Bernardos told El Mundo that prices are rising most “in prime zones of the cities, where there is a shortage of good product.” Pointing to rising mortgage lending, rising middle-class household income, increased optimism about the economy, and the resurgent preference for buying over renting, he forecasts that prices will continue rising in 2016, and at a faster rate. “Of Course I Believe in Father Christmas” by Janette Davies and Friends

Dedicated to Maria Wilson and The Pink Ladies in recognition of their work to raise funds and awareness to beat cancer. I bet you thought that another Christmas was over for another year, didn’t you? Well, not quite! This anthology of short stories covers a number of genres by local writers. I will donate my copy to any reader who emails me with name and address details. Drummond Marvin uses humour and a touch of the autobiographical with reference to park benches and sleeping rough. Enough said…. I get better protection from The Telegraph. I catch the flu with The Mirror. Imagine this conversation with a policeman after a gust of wind blew his bedding away and wrapped itself around a policeman! Our man was resting between jobs, having secured an audition for a speaking part for that same evening. We are taken back to December 1959, to a struggling actor with the princely sum of £3.10s and 6pence in his pocket, relishing the prospect of collecting his dole money the next day. No chauffeur driven limousine for our down-and-out. Just wishful thinking. Sheltering from the cold and remember it is December, was a necessity. Fortunately London provided free entertainment and shelter from the cold: Bach organ music or The National Gallery? Both if you’re lucky. And what about lunch? The Lyons Corner House in the West End was where he dined on steak and kidney pie, fit for a King? Perhaps not. If someone said to me that, as an actor, you’d have to face hardship in many forms, I wouldn’t have believed them. His agent, Vincent Shaw had told him about the audition. He didn’t want to mix up has lines like his friend who was offered his first speaking part in an Elizabethan play. No surprise to learn that the acting role was for a Santa Claus in a department store. There were three other desperate out-of-work actors but our man was on the ball. He was honest and dishonest at the same time. The good news was that he landed on his feet for a couple of weeks at least with a few well-needed perks thrown in to ensure he had a cot to sleep in and use of the canteen for free food. Who said

you can’t live like a King sometimes? Hugh Pike’s protagonist is another male, desperate for money but perhaps not so desperate as the actor. He wants a temporary job working for the Post Office in the run up to Xmas, hopeful that he might be able to extend it into something more permanent. Not very ambitious or very bright. He is a gawky adolescent unaware what he is letting himself in for. Imagine a ten mile delivery round by bicycle when the weather is at its worst: snow, ice, bitter frosts and torrential rain and howling winds. Heavy parcels, the cumbersome weight of the bike alone and a rural setting. He was forced to walk in a doubled up posture similar to that of an orangutan! How was he supposed to mount the bike? A pathetic attempt, loss of control and this youth didn’t quite make it. He fell into an open skip lined with builders’ rubble describing it as a shambolic display of incompetence. This was the beginning. A good comedy sketch surely? The more I tried to free myself, the more entangled my limbs became in the pouch and its strap. Some improvement and a bit of day-dreaming when he reached the castle imagining bloody fields and battle bringing news of a glorious victory or impending defeat during Napoleon’s time. At the moment when he started feeling confident about the job in hand, the weather changed producing squalls of drenching rain and some serious mishaps particularly with the pigs like a herd of curious bullocks and being surrounded by a snorting mob that began to look threatening. Poor gawky adolescent. He didn’t stand a chance. Discover for yourself what fell into the quagmire and the fate of the new postie. It doesn’t look good….. To start the New Year I would like to ask the question. ‘What is Encryption, and Why Are People Afraid of It?’ I would love to plead ignorance and say “honestly don’t know!”, but the truth is that we are being guided to a place where privacy will be an obsolete word in a very dusty, old dictionary, stored in the back of an archivist private collection. Today, I am not here to warn you of the impending totalitarianism, but to let you know that you still have the right privacy by using encryption! What is it? Simply put, it is a method of protecting information from outside observers. The simplest is alphabet substitution, changing ‘A’ for ‘B’ or any other letter you like. These can be beaten

easily with a large enough sample! For example, ‘E’ is the most common letter used, followed by ‘T’ and then ‘A’. Knowing this makes bringing back the original easy. Modern methods of using polynomial mathematics of prime numbers. All you need to understand is that using this methods encryption is quick and VERY SECURE. There have been whispers, more than vague rumours but not quite open admission, that the security industries (CIA, NSA, MI5/6 etc) want a ‘Back Door’. Something that they can use to read you encrypted information. Like many technologies, encryption has the potential to be misused, but that does not make it dangerous. And it doesn’t mean that people who use it are dangerous or bad. Where as this is great if you are a known terrorist trying to topple the ‘New World Order’ it isn’t so good for you and I who just want to ensure our messages to our loved ones remain secure. A fog had descended on Alqueria, not the usual green, malodorous and worryingly sticky thing that manifests itself from time to time but a depressing grey smog, melancholy and suffocating as if in despair. Alqueria has always been an influence on its inhabitants, affecting their moods and rhythms, now it appears the reverse is true, the very fabric of the Pueblo was weeping. Rodriquez was completely in control. Poyato was hiding behind false genitals at a low-budget freak show in Mojácar attempting to avoid the attentions of Manuela. Manuela was searching the length and breadth of Almería for Poyato intent on ambushing him with a giant turkey baster filled with Tabasco sauce. Loco Paco had barricaded himself in the basement of the town hall with his pet Scarabaeoidea, Benjy and his insubstantial friend Bert. With these three individuals suitably preoccupied the way was open for the evil Rodriquez to mould the Village into his vision of the ideal society. For many years the Village Republic had enjoyed full employment apart from Alfonso Hagapoco, Alqueria’s very own unemployment figure. Just why Alfonso remained unemployed was not clear but it was from choice and it was necessary as the exception that proved the rule. The remaining inhabitants were employed in retail businesses or healthcare with the vast majority involved in the Remitroot industry which is unique to Alqueria. The amount of

work any individual did varied according to how they felt on any particular day. The work got done however and Alqueria’s much sought after Remitroot products reached the domestic and international markets with reasonable reliability. The revenue was shared out according to need and everyone was contented and happy with the arrangement. Rodriquez was now in control and the idyllic anarchistic society that was Alqueria changed. He bought the Remitroot business for a one Alquerian Raro, a nominal amount which he paid to himself. He reduced staff, paid miserable wages and introduced the twelve hour day. He made it a legal obligation for each adult to partake of Remitroot liquor daily after hyping the price of the beverage. He had chimneys built on all public buildings just so he could send twelve year-old boys up to clean them. He built a work-house for those who couldn’t afford to feed themselves. The inmates slaved fourteen hours a day weaving Remitroot stalks into none slip matting for Abyssinian Goat Shirling stadiums. Rodriquez was universally hated, apart from a group of Tory MPs who sent a note of congratulation and support. Who will lead Alqueria out of the darkness? What to do?

These could contain anything, and when it could theoretically be anything, imaginations tend to run wild. They contain stolen

nuclear codes, child pornography, all kinds of stolen government secrets… or, more likely, your tax documents, bank transactions, kid’s pictures, and other personal information you don’t want others to have access to. A lot of attention was recently drawn to the Islamic-associated terrorism suspects using encrypted methods of communication with the popular messaging service ‘WhatsApp’. The bogeyman here is strong encryption allows bad people to communicate about who-knows-what! The sad thing, and we really should expect it, is many prominent government and intelligence officials are taking advantage of the situation, saying unashamedly that “encryption is for bad people, terrorists, and hackers.” Never waste a good crisis, as the saying goes. The Advantages of Right-Ear Deafness

Back along Pete went deaf in his right ear – this was discovered through his bitter complaints about the way we were all mumbling! Trips to the doctor for various ear drops and anti-biotics proved ineffective, so off to the ENT at Huercal-Overa we went. There his hearing was checked in a tiny room with umpteen protrusions on its inside walls so that it resembled the inside of an enormous carton for enormous dinosaur eggs. The verdict was given and the decision was made that he should have a grommet put in his ear. However, deafness in one ear is not a life-threatening condition, so he will have to wait until Spring, and in the meantime he has got used to saying ‘What?’ and I have got used to shouting at him. But there is always an upside, if you can but find it, and just before Christmas we found it! mince pies, mulled wine and a multitude of people. The Carols were all the wellknown favourites, were everybody knows the tune and at least some of the words. Now I cannot sing – I cannot sing so much that I even sound bad to myself! But Carols are accommodating things, and allow for the less than lark-like, especially when sung en masse! Pete and I parked ourselves where our far from dulcet tones would hopefully go unnoticed, and where volume would compensate for melody. We sang our heads off – We harked to the herald angels, we rocked around the Christmas tree, we numbered the 14 Days of Christmas – it must have been the 14 days, because when we arrived at Five Gold Rings at least half the room was only just finished with the Eight Maids a-milking! We threw caution to the winds, and belted those carols out with complete disregard to harmonics – we were having a wonderful time, as uninhibited as five year olds in School Assembly, if they still have School Assembly. As we left Pete asked if he had made too much noise. ‘I don’t know’ I replied, ‘I was making too much noise myself!’ ‘I didn’t hear you. But you were sitting on my right hand side.’ Ah! The main attraction was the England shirt from the international 7’s tournament recently held at Elche. As a club we are looking at holding further events in support of the DEBR A charity in the New Year raffling and auctioneering off more club and international shirts that have been kindly donated by Elche RFC and other friends. We are continuing training and getting new players coming along and hoping to start playing some 7’s rugby to give the players at all levels some game practice to give them a goal for the training. We will also be training throughout December, over the Christmas period like last year as it was a great success. We are looking to be able to put a team in at all levels in the league this time next year so come along and join the newest rugby team on the Costa Blanca and join the rugby revolution. San Miguel Golf Society at Vistabella 30th December 2015

SMGS’s final gathering of the year found 32 members and 4 guests taking part in a Stableford competition at Vistabella. A chilly wind at the time of the early start abated and excellent conditions prevailed for most of the round. The course had its usual tightly cropped fairways and slippery greens with some interesting pin positions. A number of players really struggled, particularly those in Silver Category, with only a mere 25 points needed to take 4th place. The outstanding scores of the day were posted by Dave Gibson with 42 points, and John Osborne with 39. The day’s competition results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 4th Brian Mulligan (31 on CB), 3rd Chris Hamblett (31 on CB), 2nd Norman McBride (32), and 1st Norman Padmore with 34 points. Silver Category: 4th Scotty Philips (25 on CB), 3rd Roy Willing (26), 2nd Phil Birtwistle (30) and 1st, way ahead of the rest of the category and most of the field, Dave Gibson with an excellent 42 points. Gold Category: 4th Steve Higgins (33 on CB), 3rd Robin Eastman (33 on CB), 2nd Darren Hancock (34) and 1st, with a superb 39 points and the second best score of the day, John Osborne. The Abacus was won by Bo Gejdstrom. Nearest the pins on the par 3’s (open to all), of which there are only three on this course, went to John Osborne (4), Darren Hancock (8) and Kevin Allbright (15).
