US to extradite Salvadoran colonel over Jesuit murders
A procession to commemorate the victims. Photo: Marvin Recinos / AFP A US judge on Friday approved the extradition to Spain of a Salvadoran former colonel linked to the 1989 murders of six Jesuit priests, in a decision
lauded by rights groups. Inocente Montano Morales, 73, will remain in custody pending final approval for extradition by US Secretary of State John Kerry, which is likely to be a formality. Montano Morales, who previously served time in a US prison for immigration fraud and perjury, was El Salvador's deputy defense minister at the time the Jesuit priests – who were seeking an end to the nation's civil war – were slaughtered. Six priests, their housekeeper and the housekeeper's 16-year-old daughter were gunned down in their residence on the campus of the Universidad Centroamericana in the capital San Salvador. Five of the priests were Spanish nationals, including a university rector. Montano Morales has been indicted in Spain, along with 19 other former members of the

Salvadoran military, of the murder of the Spanish nationals. "The court finds sufficient evidence contained in Spain’s submissions to warrant a finding of probable cause to believe... he committed the charged offences," wrote Federal Court Judge Kimberly Swank, based in North Carolina. The Center for Justice and Accountability, a nonprofit rights organisation, praised the move. “This finding is a vindication of the years of struggle of the Salvadoran people against a repressive military which tried to turn reality on its head by calling anyone who defied it – including the Jesuits priests – terrorists,” said senior legal advisor Carolyn Patty. El Salvador’s civil war raged from 1980 to 1991, claiming the life of some 75,000 people. thelocal

CARNIVAL night is now in full swing with parades in fancy-dress taking place across the country, to be followed by all-night street parties with open-air discos, live bands, and pop-up bars in town centres. The most famous carnivals in Spain are held in the Canary Islands, followed closely by Cádiz in the southwest of the mainland, but many of the other largest, most popular and most flamboyant carnivals in the country are in small, otherwise-unknown locations. On the east coast in the Comunidad Valenciana, the carnival or carnestoltes in Pego, Alicante province is among the top destinations for revellers on the night before the start of Lent. Previews of costumes for this year – which are
frequently donned by entire groups - have included, predictably, Harry Potter characters, Frozen characters, Minions, and characters from Game of Thrones. Others are more timeless – clowns, angels, devils, Disney characters, animals – or random, with masks, wigs, tinsel and any other colourful adornments partygoers can find in their local Chinese bazaar. Children's carnival parades took place earlier today – often followed by discos or puppet shows and craft workshops – but the adults are now enjoying the revelry

North Korea fires long-range rocket despite warnings
ort
North Korea has fired a long-range rocket, which critics say is a test of banned missile technology. A state TV announcer said that North Korea had successfully placed a satellite in orbit. The launch was condemned by Japan, South Korea and the US, who have requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council later on Sunday. South Korea says it is to begin discussing with the US the deployment of a missile
defence system. Senior defence official Ryu JeSeung said if the THAAD missile system - considered one of the most advanced in the world were deployed it would be only to counter the threat from the North. In a statement, the North Korean National Aerospace Development Administration said earth observation satellite Kwangmyongsong-4 had entered orbit about 10 minutes after lift-off from the Sohae space centre in North Phyongan province. Announcing the launch on state TV, a newsreader said it had been ordered by North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-un and said the country planned to launch more satellites in the future. “The fascinating vapour of Juche satellite trailing in the clear and blue sky in spring of February on the threshold
Biodiesel factory explosion kills two
TWO men have died and a third injured in a major explosion in Algemesí (near Valencia). A biodiesel factory on the Cotes industrial estate blew up this morning (Saturday), causing a fire which emergency services are still working on putting out. Several employees were inside the building, which belongs to the firm Biocom Energía, S.L., at the time of the conflagration, says mayoress of
Algemesí, Marta Trenzano. Two of them perished and one has been rushed to La Fe hospital in Valencia with 80% burns and in a critical condition. All three are said to be in their early 40s. Forensics are said to be investigating the cause of the blast, which is so far thought to have been caused by sparks from soldering. thinkspain.com

of the Day of the Shining Star,’’ was how the launch was described. South Korean Defence Ministry spokesman Moon Sang Gyun said a warship had detected the launch at 09:31 (00:31 GMT). The rocket launch was roundly condemned by the international community. US Secretary of State John Kerry called it a “flagrant violation” of UN
resolutions and warned of “significant measures to hold the DPRK [North Korea] to account.” China said it “regrets” North Korea’s actions but urged “the relevant parties” to “refrain from taking actions that may further escalate tensions on the Korean peninsula”. http://www.bbc.com/
Taiwan rescuers find signs of life in quake rubble
TAINAN, Taiwan (AP) — Rescuers on Sunday found signs of life within the remains of a high-rise residential building that collapsed in a powerful, shallow earthquake in southern Taiwan that killed at least 19 people, as families anxiously waited on site. The emergency center in Tainan, the worst-hit city, said Sunday that 171 people had been rescued from the building following the magnitude-6.4 quake that struck at dawn Saturday. Tainan Mayor Lai Ching-te said in TV interviews from the site of the building collapse that there was an estimated 124 still trapped, many at the bottom of the wreckage. Lai said that they had been able to rescue many people by using information from residents who got out on the possible locations of those still inside. A man in his early 30s was pulled out from the rubble Sunday morning and able to tell rescuers his name and other information. A man in his 60s, whose son escaped and whose daughter-in-law was in serious condition in a hospital, was trying to help rescuers pinpoint his grandsons. "My 11- and 12-year-old grandsons are still inside on the ninth floor," said the man, who only gave his surname, Huang. "I told my son not to buy an apartment here; it was
suspiciously cheap." Beside him, another man nodded in agreement as he waited for news of his own relatives on the seventh floor. The quake came two days before the start of Lunar New Year celebrations that mark the most important family holiday in the Chinese calendar. The operators of Taiwan’s high speed rail announced Sunday that the service would resume full operation from noon. The earthquake had damaged power lines near Tainan Station and caused major disruption to the system at a busy time when many people were returning home to celebrate. Following the collapse of the residential high-rise, questions surfaced about whether construction of the 1989 structure had been shoddy. Tainan’s government said the building was not listed as a dangerous structure before the quake, and the interior minister, Chen Wei-zen, said an investigation would examine whether the developer had cut corners. Earthquakes frequently rattle Taiwan, but most are minor and cause little or no damage. However, a magnitude-7.6 quake in central Taiwan in 1999 killed more than 2,300 people. yahoo.com
Seven arrested in Spain over suspected militant links
The arrests were carried out in the eastern cities of Valencia and Alicante and in Spain”s North African enclave of Ceuta, the police said in a statement. “Four of those arrested are Spanish nationals of Syrian, Jordanian and Moroccan origin,” it said. A Syrian and a Moroccan were also taken into custody, it said. A police spokesman later announced a seventh arrest, but did not give the individual’s nationality or other details. The operation was still ongoing. The arrests were made in the context of an investigation launched in 2014 into “foreign structures” of ISIS and the AlNusra Front, an Al-Qaeda affiliate in Syria, police said. One of those arrested was a man who
dispatched “military material, money, electronic and transmission material, firearms and precursors for making explosives” to Syria and Iraq via a company, the police statement said. This was shipped out in closed containers under the guise of humanitarian aid, and financed by “hawala,” an informal system of payment based on trust that is far more difficult to trace than bank transfers. The leader of the network was in “constant” contact with a member of the Islamic State, who repeatedly asked him to recruit women in order to marry them off to IS jihadists in Syria, the statement said. thelocal

Is this proof of a Spanish YETI?
Shaky camera footage and pictures appear to show an abominable snowman in the Pyrenees Photograph was posted online with the message: 'What the hell is this?' Footage shows the mysterious animal walking through snow covered hills Ski resort bosses searched the tourist spot after the picture was posted Mystery still remains unsolved but skiers were told not to be alarmed Shaky camera footage and pictures appear to show a mysterious Yeti-style creature. Spanish ski resort bosses have combed part of the tourist spot after a skier posted the image appearing to show an abominable
snowman in Formigal in Spain. The photograph, posted online with the message: 'Strange animal spotted in Formigal. What the hell is this?', has been shared thousands of times. The picture sparked a search by ski resort owners Aramon and a frenzied debate over whether a Spanish Yeti was on the loose or if it was a bear, Photoshop montage or even a soldier wearing mountain camouflage. The mystery remained unsolved last night, although skiers were being reassured there was no cause for alarm. A spokesman for the resort, which hosted the FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships in 2008, confirmed a search of the area had been conducted after an ‘alleged Yeti sighting.’ He said: ‘We have spoken to the witnesses of the sighting to identify the area in which it took place and after combing the area we have found nothing. h t t p://w w w. dailymail.co.uk/

Autumn and winter jobs for around the home and garden Winter is fast approaching and before the really cold and wet weather gets here now is the ideal time to do maintenance jobs around the home and garden in preparation for winter. So if you have a spare half day or a weekend and the weather is a lovely autumnal day why not get out in the winter sun and do those jobs ready for the winter months. Leaves Leaves look nice when they are golden brown and red whilst they are still on the trees but as they fall off they can be a real pain. They can make driveways and paths slippery under foot, block gutter and downpipes and generally make the garden look untidy. So a good sweep up can make the world of difference and as an added bonus you can bag them up and compost them ready to be spread of the vegetable patch the following year. Draught excluder If you have draughts around doors and windows, or even letter boxes you can quickly and relatively cheaply reduce or completely iliminate them simply by buying and fitting draught excluders. Draught excluders and readily available from DIY merchants and stores and are easy to fit, many door and window draught excluders simply are self adhesive, some require fitting with screws, such as in the case of a letter box draught excluder. Roof tiles Slipped, missing or cracked roof tiles could potentially cost you a lot of money in damage. If water gets into a loft space and you are unaware of it not only could the contents of your loft be damaged but eventually the room ceilings and walls will get damp, this could be costly to put right. So to prevent this take a walk outside and look up at your roof, can you see

and ridge tiles missing, or any broken or cracked tiles, if there are either replace them yourself, or better still, call a roofer to do it for you. If you have flat roofs do you get a pool of water when it rains, this could create a problem or even be a sign of a problem, if you have a pool of water after it rains on your flat roof it could mean the boards under the felt are rotten and sunk thus leaving a dip in the felt for the rain to gather, again it is worth investigating yourself or calling a roofer. Painting Ok the winter isn’t the best time for painting outside but you could to a temporary job by making sure wood is protected with paint, a simple undercoat and topcoat on the bare areas could help protect the wood over the winter and you can go back and do a proper job in the spring of the following year. Boiler and heating We all rely on our heating this time of year, so it is worth checking everything is working OK before the really cold weather comes, if you have radiators that are colder at the top than the bottom you may need to bleed your radiators, if you are unsure of this ask a plumber. You should always call an registered gas fitter if you need work done on your boiler or gas fire. If you have an open fire, when was the last time you had the chimney swept, does it need doing before you have an open fire? Outside tap If you have a outside or garden tap you should make sure the pipes are lagged to avoid the pipes from freezing, also if possible turn off the isolator valve that feeds the outside tap and drain off the water by opening the tap, so there is no chance of the water freezing. You could also buy and fit a garden tap jacket that goes over the tap to keep it from freezing. www.improvingyourproperty.co.u

HOW TO NEGOTIATE ROUNDABOUTS If you are unsure about the correct way to negotiate roundabouts, here are some simple rules to help you enter and exit roundabouts safely and in the right lane. APPROACHING ROUNDABOUTS It’s important to remember to give way to traffic already on the roundabout. If the roundabout is outside urban areas of towns or cities, keep right. If the roundabout is in a built-up area inside a town or city and the lanes are clearly marked, you should use the lane that best corresponds to the exit you need to take. LEAVING ROUNDABOUTS This causes the most confusion amongst drivers. Which lane to choose? Why do I get beeped at if I’m in the right lane? Drivers must exit roundabouts from the right hand lane, because the only way to leave the roundabout is by turning right. This doesn’t mean we always have to enter the roundabout from the right hand lane. It depends on the exit we need to take. However this simple rule, in

pause for thought
Lent already! A time for spring-cleaning both body and soul - to take time out to reflect on our Christian lives. I’m fully aware that we all face the challenge of prioritising our precious time, but as a Christian, Lent is an opportunity unlike any other to stop and listen to that “still small voice of calm”; to find that quiet place, away from the distractions of modern living, - switch off the mobile, turn off the tablet, computer, television, and spend some time reflecting, either in prayer or biblereading. Instead of giving something up, why not see Lent as a time to take something on, adjusting our regular routine and making time and space to be still? So often we protest that there simply isn’t enough time in the day to achieve so many things. Well here’s a great opportunity to withdraw as Jesus did and reflect in the peace and calm of our day, of where we are and where God wants us to be. There are many opportunities to be grasped during Lent, which will set us on a path to be ready to celebrate the great festival of Easter. So let’s make time to enjoy, rather than endure Lent; a positive time, for a faithful review, so we’re ready to rejoice in the strength and knowledge that in pausing to listen we’ve allowed ourselves to learn what
God wants for us. An old custom of the church was to say the Ash Wednesday prayer each day in Lent, which seems perhaps a useful place to start. Almighty and everlasting God, you hate nothing that you have made and forgive the sins of all who are penitent: create and make in us new and contrite hearts that we, worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness, may receive from you, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ your son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. CONTINUING STRAIGHT ON (e.g. 2nd EXIT STRAIGHT AHEAD) Enter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate prior to exit and leave roundabout. TURNING LEFT OR CHANGING DIRECTION (e.g. 3rd OR FINAL EXIT) Enter roundabout keeping to left hand side lane. Stay in lane until you have passed the exit before your turn off, then change lane by indicating right and giving other road users sufficient time to anticipate your manoeuvre. Don’t forget that drivers circulating in the outside lanes have priority, so use your mirrors to ensure you are not blocking them as you change lanes. About us
Although many Removal firms nowadays claim to be a 'family business' few actually are. This is where we are different. We pride ourselves on giving each individual job (regardless of size) a personal service that is second to none, and in achieving complete customer satisfaction. After all, its our reputation our name - at stake, so we do all we can to maintain our high standards and also meet those of the customer. It's for this reason that a majority of our work is due to recommendation.
Spain and France
We specialise in relocations to and from France and Spain, and often have weekly loads going to both destinations. By combining knowledge of the european laws with local information and years of overseas experience, we have managed to remain as reliable in Europe as we are in England, and consequently have built up a good reputation in both countries. We work closely alongside several english-run storage companies in Spain, allowing us greater flexability with our customers on both sides. All work within our guidelines and adhere to our high standards. We have become one of their top recommended removal companies for moves to and from the UK, and still remain the removal company of choice for many ex-pats.
European Removals
We offer a professional yet personal service to and from most parts of Europe and will gladly tailor make a package to suit your individual needs. We understand that flexability and reliability is of utmost importance to our customers, especially when moving overseas and we aim to cover both areas within the services we offer. Quotations for european moves follow the same protocol as for domestic UK removals (see 'Quotations '). They require an estimator to visit your home (where possible) or can be submitted via 'Online Quotes' . You may wish to email your enquiry to: fredphillipsremovalsltd@ymail.com
Full or Part Loads
The main options to consider in a european move are how big your load is likely to be, and whether you require your belongings on a specific date, or just within a certain timescale. We offer two main services to cover these options: • Full Load - You pay for sole use of the vehicle. Gives you full control (as far as is possible) over the collection and delivery of your belongings, allowing you to work to a specific date. • Part Load - The cost effective option. You have part use of the vehicle along with other loads going via the same route to their desinations. Collection can still be when you require, but delivery is arranged on a full vehicle (cost efficient) basis. However, we will still do our best to work within your time frame. Both services can have storage incorporated into the move, and both offer the same experienced, dedicated customer care service from planning and preperation right through to delivery. PROPERTY SUPPLEMENT
THE BEST PROPERTY SUPPLEMENT ON THE COSTAS!!!!
How to Rent Your Spanish Property Many people considering buying a second home in Spain do so with an eye to renting it out when it’s not being used by the family. This can be a good way to make sure the property pays for itself but, before you leap onto the rental market, you should look at what the law says. In 2013, the law in Spain was amended to devolve regulation of holiday lets to the region in which the property is located. Simply, where your property is based affects what you are allowed to do. The law change was brought about at the behest of hoteliers throughout the country who felt that, while they had to adhere to strict rules and regulations relating to hygiene, fire and safety etc., those renting out private residences got away ‘scotfree’. This new law attempts to redress the balance, as well as to raise the standards of rental accommodation to match that of hotels and, some cynics might say, increase the tax revenue from those renting out. What Spanish Property Law Says Essentially, the law varies for each of the 17 self-governing regions of Spain. For example, some inland areas with low tourist visibility such as CastillaLa Mancha (of Don Quixote fame) and Castilla y León have no regulations. While holiday hotspot areas such as the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands have extremely strict standards (yet vary between islands). Here’s a taste of the regulations applying to other areas: Valencia Holiday properties are subject to strict criteria in terms of the accommodation and furnishings provided. In addition a recent modification to the law on holiday rentals states that all holiday properties must be registered with the Register for Tourist Businesses, Establishments and Professionals.
Once registered you will be provided with a registration number and this number must be included in all advertising and publicity materials for the property. Failure to include the registration number in your advertising could result in fines for both you and the advertising channel. Asturias You cannot rent out a flat for fewer than 30 days and if you are renting out a holiday property you must offer the property for rent for at least July, August and September, the intention being to stop people from living in their beach homes during the summer months. Basque Country At present if you are renting out only one holiday property then there is no requirement for that property to be registered. However, if you are offering more than one holiday property for rent then you must register these properties. Please note that the law will change in 2015 or 2016 and that the new rules will state that all holiday properties must be registered. Andalucia The implementation of the law is still pending in this region, but that hasn’t stopped some localities issuing fines. It is generally understood that the local government is close to approving a new law and so it will be important to keep abreast of the latest developments if you intend to purchase a property to use as a holiday let. Catalonia Legislation came into force in this region in 2012, requiring that all holiday rentals in the area be licensed, but there are tens of thousands of properties still not licensed and property owners facing fines that are enforceable. To make it even more confusing the
regulations throughout the regions are often subject to change so, if you are considering renting out your property, you should check carefully what the requirements are in that area. The Risks of Non-Compliance Not adhering to these local regulations comes at a hefty price. Since the law came into force, fines amounting to €537,771 have been issued in penalties; there have been 284 cases brought with owners and agents receiving fines of anywhere between €3,000 and €24,000. But it hasn’t stopped at just agents and owners being penalised. The Catalan government recently issued a fine of €30,000 (approximately £24,000) to internet sensation Airbnb for ‘a serious breach of local laws’ publishing details of rental properties that have not been registered with the Tourism Registry of Catalonia and has threatened to block Airbnb
from operating in the region. What are the Costs? The localisation of regulation means that the licence cost also varies depending on which region your property is in. Some areas operate on a set-fee basis, with fees known at the time of writing between €177 to €500, but other areas like the Balearic Islands work out the cost on a per guest basis. In all cases, though, the licence fee is a one-off cost, which should be factored in if you are planning to rent your property out. Take Out Insurance Don’t forget you will also need to ensure adequate insurance cover, including public liability and specific rental insurance, and you will also need to declare any earnings to the Spanish tax agency, as well as to HMRC if you are resident in the UK. https://www.aplaceinthesun.com

How to Find Cheap Spanish Properties in 2016 For some buyers price is everything and the motivation can be to simply find the cheapest available property. As with so many things, you do get what you pay for so with Sterling strong against the Euro in 2015 it could be better to plan a budget and then see what level of quality that affords you with pounds in your pocket. So we have put together a guide to finding the best property bargains that Spain has to offer.
Getting a Bargain in Alicante
Year-round flights from every corner of the UK to Alicante make it the gateway to the Costa Blanca and a popular city for weekenders. Its popularity with wealthy Madrileños is reflected too, in the classy ramblas and bars of El Barrio, the museums, well-looked-after medieval castles, markets and marina. Alicante is a great choice if you want to soak yourself in authentic Spanish for a fraction of what you’d pay in Barcelona or Madrid. There are beach resorts and fishing villages close by. San Juan Playa is just a 10km hop from the city centre to the north, while Santa Pola is a bustling fishing harbour with wonderful beaches a short drive south. The further you go out of the centre the lower the prices – down as far as €13,000 for a two-bedroom flat in the Virgen del Remedio area. In the centre you can still get a decent two-bedroom flat for €120,000 to €150,000 but you’ll have to forgo a sea view at that price. Beyond the city limits may be more suitable. North of the city, Sant Juan, El Campello and Mutxamel are popular with expats and you can buy a twobedroom, 70m2 apartment on the Bonalba Golf
Course, with use of a communal pool and the clubhouse facilities which include a spa and gym. South of the city beyond the airport, you can get a nice townhouse in Santa Pola from €120,000.
Top tip
If you’re looking for really easy weekend jaunts, being a short bus or taxi ride from the airport, such as in Santa Pola, will save a fortune in car hire costs and hassle over the years compared to the other side of town.
Getting a Bargain in Costa Blanca
South Costa Blanca is expat country with beach and golf resorts in Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa. Easy to reach, easy to find inexpensive properties too after mid-2000s overdevelopment. Prices have begun to rise though and new communities are springing up. North of Benidorm the landscape is lusher and the culture more traditionally Spanish, with some dazzling fishing-village/resorts such as Calpe and Altea. In Orihuela Costa one-bedroom apartments are €50,000 to €70,000, townhouses under €100,000 and villas with pools less than €200,000. The hard part is finding something that doesn’t feel squashed in, as so many do. For more space at a bargain price go inland to the Hondon Valley for a farmhouse with land for €125,000. Or drive past Alicante and Benidorm to the very north of the Costa Blanca around Denia where you’re too far from the airport for some buyers and prices tumble. Spectacularly gorgeous villas with decent gardens can be found for €250,000.
Top tip
The extremities of the Costa Blanca have the best
bargains. For a real bargain look at Oliva. Strictly speaking it’s a kilometre or two north of the Costa Blanca, but there are apartments in a lively and unspoilt Spanish town there from €20,000.
Getting a Bargain in Murcia
Where the Spanish coastline turns from east to south, the weather warms up and property gets cheaper. Even in well-heeled enclaves like La Manga the luxury is more affordable than in some costas. There are attractive fishing villages and the city of Murcia, but mostly it’s purpose-built-resort territory, dedicated to relaxation around communal pools and golf courses. Between 2004 and 2006 agents brought inspection trippers here by the planeload, persuading some to buy one property for themselves and more for investment. Many defaulted after the crash and are now being sold as fantastic bargains. Polaris World’s resorts have never-lived-in apartments (and lots of them) at €50,000 to €100,000. The La Torre golf resort is the most popular, around 15km inland from the coast. There are also some attractive seaside villages and towns such as Sucina, Santiago de la Ribera and Aguílas, but bear in mind that they’re quiet in winter. Townhouses here start at around €110,000.
Top tip
If an agent tells you that a new infrastructure project is about to rejuvenate an area and bring untold riches, be sceptical. A Place in the Sun magazine began in 2004 with a feature about the new Paramount theme park and airport near Murcia. We’re still waiting for it. aplaceinthesun

According to a study carried out by property portal, idealista.com, which analysed the 38,595 homes in Spain advertised for sale on their portal in January from the various financial institutions, the majority of these dwellings are located in small or medium size towns, with approximately 66% of the banks’ homes situated in towns of less than 50,000 inhabitants. The towns with between 5,000 and 20,000 inhabitants accounted for 29% of the total homes for sale in January, followed by those with between 20,000 and 50,000 inhabitants (22% of the total), while 12% of these dwellings are located in villages with between 1,000 and 5,000 inhabitants, and just 3% of the properties advertised are in villages with less than 1,000 people.
The analysis shows that only 8% of all the homes for sale by financial institutions are situated in the larger cities with populations of over 500,000 people, while 13% of the homes are for sale in both the cities with between 100,000 and 500,000 inhabitants, and those with between 50,000 and 100,000 inhabitants. Some 59% of the advertised dwellings are priced at lower than 100,000 euros, while 23% cost between 100,000 and 150,000 euros. The homes with prices between 150,000 and 200,000 euros account for 10% of those advertised, and those between 200,000 and 300,000 euros account for 6% of the total. How to Clean Tile Floors
property services
February 2016
Take care of your ceramic tile floors with a gentle hand and a few smart cleaning techniques, which will keep your tiles and grout looking like new. Tile Floor Cleaning Basics Sweep or vacuum your glazed tile floors regularly to keep them from getting dull. Tiles may be resistant to dirt, but sand and grit can dull glazed surfaces. Clean tile with mild detergent and clean water, using a rag or chamois-type mop rather than a sponge mop. The latter pushes dirty water into grout lines and makes them harder to clean. Be sure to change the water frequently while mopping; dirty water equals a cloudy floor. Get Rid of Residue If your tiles look hazy, you might be dealing with soapy residue. Remove the film with a nonabrasive brush (a metal brush will damage the grout). Repeat as all-purpose cleaner. You necessary. Poyato: Man and Boy
A great deal has been written about Antonio Poyato and his Remitroot crop, the mainstay of the Alquerian economy but what about the man himself, his boyhood and the pressures that moulded him into what he is today? Antonio was born in Alqueria some forty-five summers ago to Pepe and Carmen. They were poor workers of the land and rearers of a species of Alquerian goat which produces no milk and whose flesh has the texture of Balsa Wood and the taste of bronchial mixture. When asked why they kept them, they replied that they were badly advised but had now formed a strong emotional bond with the animals. The inquirer thought it prudent not to pursue the matter. Little is known about Poyato’s early years other than his attachment to the goats which he knew by name and who responded to his commands. Just what these commands were isn’t on record, perhaps rightly so. As a teenager Antonio was a quiet courteous young man who took his studies seriously. He was conscientious in all he did and was always willing to help out around his parents smallholding. All who came into contact with him thought him charming and helpful. He was generous to a fault. His generosity left him financially weak but the the joy of giving made his lack of cash more than worth while. He married a local girl who was quite pretty but unfortunately not from the front. Then Antonio Poyato turned to drink, it was the making of him. He stopped giving and so became financially secure. He stopped helping others and so had the time
viewpoint
and energy to pursue his own goals. His wife left him allowing him to start a series of meaningless but very satisfying liaisons with local beauties. His liking for the heady effects of alcohol prompted him to research and experiment with the root known to the Romans as Remitus Radix. This led to the rediscovery of the plant now called Remitroot and the rest is of course history. But I will reiterate the plants attributes for late comers to our story. Remitus Radix was much savoured by the Romans as the base for a potent wine and especially for its effect as an aphrodisiac. It is said that Caligula had some of his best nights on Remitus Radix. Now other uses for the plant have been discovered. It can be used to lag pipes, to prevent corrosion in the ballast tanks of oil tankers. It can also be woven into a soft, durable and wonderfully elegant cloth, which unfortunately explodes on contact with water. The drinking of Remitroot products is extremely addictive and has guaranteed the fortunes of Alqueria. We can only applaud the change in direction that Antonio Poyato took in his early manhood.

The Retrogression of Technology
New is not always better. Take for instance the recently deceased Land Rover Discovery, ditched because it ‘no longer fulfilled the requirements of the modern the motor industry.’ I remember the original Land Rover – It cocked a snook at the ‘requirements of the modern the motor industry.’ It was its own master and went its own way, through Hell and high water and everything in between. It understood its job, which was to get there. Everything was removable and replaceable, and if anything broke it could be mended right there on the spot, often using nothing more complicated than a pair of tights or a toothpick. The same with phones. I never had any trouble when I lifted the receiver (somebody please explain to the youngsters) and a polite voice speaking the Queen’s English would ask me for my ‘Number please.’ But now we have a Smartphone! I didn’t like the old Stupidphone, but the new phone has driven me to new heights of ire! I have changed my mind – Stupidphone wasn’t so bad after all! Smartphone is prettier, but that is about all. Smartphone is bigger, so doesn’t fit into a pocket as did Stupidphone. To make a call all it required with Stupidphone was to lift his lid, and there were the numbers, all ready and available. Smartphone needs to be turned on first, by pressing a tiny indent in his side, then waiting while he wakes up. Can I
By Jos Biggs
josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk then make a call? Oh, no, he has to be told that I want to make a call. Then he wants to know who it is that I want to call, offering me a list of almost the entire population of Andalucía – if he’s only pay attention, he’d find out when I press the numbers! Once I’ve managed to access the keypad and put in the number there is no simple OK to initiate dialling – Smartphone deems me too stupid to understand OK, and instead offers me a series of dumbed-down pictorials from which to make a choice. Now that is just perverse! Why does he think I keyed the number in the first place, if not to call it? In short, making a call is so long-winded and complicated that at times I feel it would be quicker to walk there with a written message. Come back Stupidphone; I’m sorry if I was a bit harsh on you!

FOOD & ENTERTAINING... Nothing Says I Love You Quite Like An Indulgent Dessert. Tempt Your Other Half With These Sumptuous Strawberries From www.ocado.com.
Chocolate Dipped Viva Strawberries
Viva strawberries and chocolate are a match made in heaven and make a delicious treat Start by melting the dark chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a pan of barely simmering water. Make sure the base of the bowl does not touch the water. Break the chocolate into Ingredient s small pieces and allow to melt (Makes 20) slowly without stirring. While 200g dark chocolate this is happening, lay a piece 3 packs Strawberries, of parchment paper down. (approx. 20) Once the chocolate has 100g white chocolate buttons melted, remove from the heat, and allow to cool for 5 minutes. Holding the Viva strawberry by the leaves dip the Viva strawberry completely into the chocolate, right up to top, so just the green is left. Hold the Viva strawberry up and allow the excess to drip off. Carefully lay the Viva strawberry down onto the parchment paper and allow to cool completely. Continue with all the Viva strawberries.

Endless Possibilities
With just a few supplies -- paint, glue, and clay -- children can transform the stones they stumble across into animals, people, or toys. Both tempera and acrylic paints work well for rock craft projects; tempera looks chalkier but washes off easily, making it the best choice for kids. Acrylic paint has a glossy finish. Before painting, kids should sketch out their plan: It's easier to envision what the finished project will look like if they draw it first with pencil on paper.
Family members can paint their initials on the rocks that suit them and turn them into refrigerator magnets.
Rock Dominoes Smooth flat stones aren't just for skipping -- they're perfect for game pieces, too. For a set of dominoes, all you need is 28 stones and a white paint pen to draw lines and dots. Begin by drawing a line across the center of each. Then on either side of the line, mark with two sets of dots in every combination

Place 4 ounces of solid clear glycerin soap in a heat-resistant measuring cup, and melt in a double-boiler or microwave. Pour half the melted soap into the bag. Spray with alcohol until bubbles disappear. Allow to cool and harden for about 1 hour. Re-melt remaining soap. Pour a small amount of melted soap on top of cooled soap in bag. Spray with alcohol. Position fish in melted soap, and let set 15 minutes to lock into place. Pour the remaining soap over fish. Spray with alcohol. Gather bag above soap and pinch with clothespin. Allow soap to cool for 15 minutes. Remove clothespin, and tie with a ribbon threaded with a gift tag.

Painted Umbrella
Coaxed open by raindrops, umbrellas bloom like flowers in spring. Your child can turn his or hers into the prettiest of them all by painting it with a fanciful pattern.
MATERIALS N y l o n umbrella Paintbrushes P e r m a n e n t waterproof paint Newspaper Smock STEPS Follow the paint manufacturer's directions: Some fabric paints require the addition of fixative; others require ironing the umbrella after painting. Carefully cover the work surface with newspaper before you begin, and have your child wear a smock. Once finished, keep the umbrella open overnight; the paint must dry completely before you close it or use it.

APAH
APAH urgently need a home or a long-term foster home for Ruben. Ruben is a 10 year old Spanish Water Dog. He is a lovely dog, sweet natured and undemanding. He was abandoned because his owner did not want the responsibility of caring for an older dog. Ruben shouldn't be in kennels at his age, he deserves somewhere warm with lots of love. If you can help care for Ruben,

Happy Animal Facts That Will Make You Smile It’s hard to say what it is about animals that we love the most – their cute or beautiful looks, their natural innocence or the emotional reactions that they elicit from us. But whatever the case may be, one of these 30 happy animal facts is bound to bring a smile to your face. A lot of these facts also underscore the similarities and emotional connections that people can share with animals, which raises a broader and more interesting questions – what is it about animals that we love so much? 1. Sea otters hold hands when they sleep to keep from drifting apart. 2. Squirrels plant thousands of new trees each year simply by forgetting where they put their acorns. 3. When playing with female puppies, male puppies will often let them win, even if they have a physical advantage. 4. Turtles can breathe through their butts. 5. Cows have best friends. 6. Gentoo penguins propose to their lifemates with a pebble. 7. A prison in Washington pairs up “death row” shelter cats with select inmates as part of a rehabilitation program. It seems to be a pretty wonderful thing for both the inmates and the cats. 8. Macaques in Japan use coins to buy vending machine snacks. 9. Norway knighted a penguin. 10.In China, killing a Panda is punishable by death. 11. Rats laugh when tickled.

A classic 1957 Ferrari is set to become the most expensive car to sell at a European auction. The red 335 Sport Scaglietti will to go under the hammer Friday afternoon in Paris at the Retromobile auction in Paris, with a price estimate of $30-$34 million. The car is described as “exceptional in every respect” and was raced by some of the world’s greatest racing drivers, including Stirling Moss and Mike Hawthorn. It won the 1958 Cuba Grand Prix and came second in the ill-fated 1957 Mille Miglia, where a crash killed several spectators. The vehicle has been owned by Ferrari collector, Pierre Bardinon, since 1970 and has been infrequently sighted since. “Photographs of this car appear in the most important books on the history of the marque. It is rare that a racing car of this caliber has such clear and direct history, without any uncertainty, and with a small number of owners. Such provenance, racing history and historical importance makes this one of the most important Ferrari in the history of motorsport,” Artcurial Motorcars, which will auction the Ferrari, says on its website. At present, the record for a car sold at a European auction is £19.6 million (then equivalent to $29.7 million). That was set in 2013 by a 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196 Formula 1 racing car at the Bonhams Goodwood Festival of Speed Sale in England. The world record for a car at auction is $38.1million for a Ferrari GTO that sold in the U.S. in August 2014.The record for a car sold to a private buyer is $52 million, also for a Ferrari 250 GTO, according to the Guinness World Records. However, the market for collectible cars looks uncertain in 2010. January auction sales at Scottsdale — the U.S.’s largest auto auction by volume — fell by 15 percent to $251 million. This was the first drop in sales since 2010.

Film Review
Magic in the Moonlight
“The world may or may not be without purpose but it’s not totally without some kind of magic.”
Whether you’re interested in science or logic is there a place in your heart to believe that magic can and does exist? Sophie Baker (Emma Stone The Amazing Spider Man 2012) quotes Nietzsche as saying that we need our illusions to live. Stanley’s response is categorical: We can’t go round deluding ourselves.” More importantly, what about deluding others? “Magic” is regarded as being a lightweight American romantic comedy by Woody Allen. It is not considered one of his finer films although it has been described as being accomplished and worth watching for the two main characters when they are sparring. Imagine chalk and cheese. It’s just like that. Insults bounce off each other like a ball constantly hitting a brick wall. Meagre attempts at philosophising which just skirt around the meaning of life and the purpose of existence. Not altogether convincing but entertaining to watch. Stanley is so set in his ways, a stubborn man who always has to be right. The film attempts to explore illusions, trickery, deception however you want to describe it just like A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Colin Firth (The King’s Speech, The Railway Man) plays an obnoxious but worldfamous illusionist and the film opens with Wei Ling Soo performing to a Berlin audience in 1928, mesmerised when he makes an elephant vanish into thin air. This is Stanley Crawford, an arrogant, bitter, stuffy, egotistical and priggish man. He patronises the stage hands calling them Neanderthals and Assassins. The conductor is a blithering idiot and for the autograph hunters they are mental defectives. Watching the performance in awe is fellow illusionist and so-called friend, Harold Burkhan (Simon McBurney) who visits Stanley’s dressing room to congratulate him. His compliments are double-edged: “A genius with all the charm of a typhus epidemic.” Is this a friend speaking? Howard persuades Stanley to travel to the south of France with him, the Cote d’Azur, to abandon his fiancee Olivia and the promise of a holiday to observe a mystic who is preying on wealthy families like the Catledges. Stanley is notoriously regarded as the “greatest debunker of fake spiritualists” and he is delighted for this invitation to expose this sleezy fraudster. Visiting Provence also allows him the opportunity to visit Aunt Vanessa (Eileen Atkins), sharp-tongued and full of sarcasm for Stanley who welcomes him with the innuendo of being “boring to the point of perfection.” We do learn that Stanley had an unhappy childhood which he compares to a dark cloud that has followed him dogging his life. His

life is shallow and meaningless until his beliefs are challenged by Sophie, another lost soul subjected to a poor childhood who has found an opportunity to break free of this poverty trap with her mother to lead a life of luxury with one milksop of a man, Brice Catledge who sees her as the bees’ knees! “Sophie sees all, she can predict the future. She’s a visionary and a vision.” Is she really? Not according to Stanley! He is absolutely besotted with her and serenades her tempting her with a life of luxury: yachts, expensive designer clothes, travel around Europe. The sky’s the limit. Sophie is tempted. Allen’s views on atheism come through solidly with Stanley, a bit of a contradiction himself. Acting out of character, he attempts to pray to God for a full recovery for Aunt Vanessa who has had a serious car crash, left in a critical condition. On reflection he rejects God and admits the act of prayer is twaddle. So we are back to where we started with Stanley believing that if God doesn’t exist, Sophie must be a charlatan. Interestingly, both sell illusions but in different ways. And that’s probably where the similarity ends. They spend time together and Sophie starts to develop some romantic feelings for a man who is unable to feel emotions in a similar way. And yet, he is the one who experiences an epiphany although vulnerable and susceptible to trickery, something he should understand well. His lifelong rationalism and cynicism have been misguided. Is this what he decides? Yes his world is turned upside down but can he come out of the experience a better and wiser person? “I’m a rational man who believes in a rational world. Any other way lies madness.” Apply his logic. If you believe in magic, if you ever delude yourself you inflict insanity upon yourself? Hopefully not. Allen’s ideals are not water-tight so enjoy the contrived romantic comedy and solve the riddle. How can a match made in heaven ring true for an atheist like Stanley or Allen?

It was an exciting day for SAMM when, immediately after their AGM, the outgoing and incoming Commodores, watched by a large group of members, jointly launched the new SAMM support boat, a Whaly 435R, using a bottle of finest cava to anoint the hull. The Whaly, a roto-moulded polyethylene Rib design, was identified as being ideal for the various uses the support boat has to cover after extensive research into the market. This Dutch made vessel is used extensively by many organisations around the world for patrol and rescue purposes; there is one in Mazarron harbour and another in San Pedro de Pinitar, both used by the local authorities. The Whaly was ordered from a dealer in Cabo de Palos in November and was delivered mid-December. Since then a small group of SAMM members,
led by Bob Miles, fitted out the boat with the engine plus the controls and other equipment necessary. A new engine will be purchased as soon as funds allow and then the vessel should give many years of reliable and trouble free service. For more information about SAMM go to www.sailingmarmenor.com

Best cheap cars Looking for a cheap new car? There’s rarely been so much choice, with more than 25 different models falling under the magic £10,000 mark. Of course, due to a wide range of enticing finance deals, the actual number of bargain new cars, if you only consider monthly repayments, is even larger. But if the price on the windscreen is all-important, you’ve never had it so good. Don’t think that a four-figure price tag will leave you with wind-down windows and no headrests, because those days are largely gone. Today, £10,000 can
get you a practical, cheap-to-run car with all sorts of electronic toys. Don’t expect acres of space in a cheap new car. They generally excel in scooting around crowded streets and are mostly capable of returning more than 50mpg in normal driving. The cars below all have a mix of abilities – some place more emphasis on practicality, while others rely on smart styling or generous standard equipment as their unique selling points. But the very best boast all of these value. http://www.carbuyer.co.uk/
1.0-litre engines are capable of more than 60mpg, while the most efficient version, the SE Blue Drive, is exempt from road tax. Factor in the five-year/ unlimited-mileage warranty and you have a genuinely class-leading cheap car
Hyundai i10 hatchback The Hyundai i10 is our favourite small car and it’s not hard to see why. All models in the range, apart from the most basic, feature air-conditioning and electric windows. But the i10 SE is the best model for under £10,000, thanks to its cruise control, front and rear electric windows and power-adjustable heated door mirrors. Whichever i10 model you choose, you’ll enjoy a reasonably large boot and low running costs – both
Failing to Maintain a Safe Distance
Offence: Failing to Maintain a Safe Distance. Driving behind a vehicle without maintaining the correct and safe distance (which does vary with weather and road conditions), will result in a fine and the loss of points. Fine: 200 euro fine and the loss of 4 points Reason: Driving too close to the vehicle in front reduces your reaction time and your overall stopping distance, this making it more likely that you will collide with that vehicle if they have to react to something in front. Although there are mathematical calculations relating to the correct distance, always remember the 2 second rule and leave a 2 second time gap between you and the vehicle in front. To do this, find a fixed object ahead such as a sign or tree and count the time between the vehicle in front passing that point and the time you do. If you can´t time 2 seconds, at your normal speaking speed, say the phrase, “only a fool breaks the 2 second rule”, which takes about 2 seconds to say. In wet conditions, the gap should be at least doubled and considerably lengthened in the event of cold and icy conditions. Skoda Citigo hatchback It’s mechanically identical to the Volkswagen up! and SEAT Mii, but the Skoda Citigo is our favourite of the three. That’s because the Citigo’s options are slightly cheaper and Skoda’s customer satisfaction ratings are considerably higher than those of VW and SEAT. Aside from that, the car is identical in all other respects, so you’ll enjoy fuel economy of around 60mpg, a 251-litre boot, cheap road tax and a good safety rating. And like its siblings, the Citigo is available with either three or five doors
Hyundai i10 hatchback For many, the choice between the SEAT Mii and Skoda Citigo will be driven by whichever has the nearest dealer, or which you prefer the look of. The SEAT scores for being very slightly cheaper – the £80 saving you’ll make should pay for a couple of tanks of petrol. But just like the Citigo, buying a Mii means you’ll enjoy a cheap-to-run, reasonably practical runabout that’s great fun to drive. Plus there’s a never-ending range of special editions to keep buyers’ interest

OLIMPICO DE TOTANA 2 MAZARRON FC 0
Totana eventually came out on top in this local derby but the game hinged on a controversial decision by the match officials in the 20th minute.
Mazarron were without two key defenders in Juan Fran and Lorca, but were the better team for 70 minutes of the game. A dangerous free kick from Willy after only two minutes was scrambled clear by the Totana defence and at the other end the home team rattled the cross bar with a fierce shot. After 20 minutes a superb through ball from Jose saw Palote outstripping the home defence. The Totana keeper raced out of his area and blatantly handled Palote’s attempt to steer the ball past him. It was a clear red card offence but the officials allowed play to continue without even awarding a free kick to Mazarron. Three minutes later another excellent free kick from Willy sailed just wide of the near post. Totana’s best chance of a first half in which they were decidedly second best came after a Mazarron corner broke down. The ball was quickly transferred to the halfway line where a home forward ran through only to be denied a goal by the onrushing Paco who cleared the danger with his chest. Mazarron again dominated the early stages of the second half and
almost scored after the best move of the game. Willy beat two men on the left wing before passing inside to Jose. The striker swivelled and found substitute Enrique whose shot hit the post before rebounding clear. Willy then sent Jose racing clear of the Totana defence but he delayed his shot too long and the danger was cleared. After 65 minutes Paco dived to save a Totana shot and was quick to pounce on the rebound but the home team who took the lead on 67 minutes. Mounir was clearly fouled on the halfway line but the referee waved play on and Juanlu was forced to concede a free kick on the edge of the penalty area. A return visit to las colinas to compete for the trophy sponsored by helena and paolo from the la marina social club.
