Speaking on behalf of Facebook, Najam Ahmad, vice president of network technology, said his company “was always evaluating new technologies and systems to provide the best connectivity possible.” The goal of both companies is to meet its customers’ growing and increasingly complex connection and data-consumption requirements, and to speed up the development of the latest generation of internet infrastructure. Marea will have open infrastructure, meaning it will be a cable that can operate using technology from a range of manufacturers. The design will mean cheaper costs for customers and better equipment, which could translate into the growth of broadband ratios by using fibre optics in the future. Construction of the cable will begin in August this year and is due to finish in October 2017. Facebook and Microsoft are working with Telxius to benefit from Telefónica’s experience and know-how with underwater cables. The company will operate and manage the system and will be able to sell capacity as part of its wholesale infrastructure business. “Working with Facebook and Microsoft on this project will reinforce Telxius’ leadership and allow us to capture new market opportunities,” said Rafael Arranz, the company’s head of operations. elpais

The two giant tech companies say the cable will provide significantly faster online speeds, as well as better cloud computing services. Dubbed “Marea,” the cable will have a capacity of around 160 terabytes per second, 16 million times faster than a domestic connection, making the transatlantic cable the fastest broadband on the planet. Its eight pairs of fibres will connect the 6,600 kilometres between a North Virginia data centre, and the Spanish province of Bizkaia, in the Basque Country, from where it will be distributed to other centres in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. The project will be operated by Telxius, a new infrastructure company set up by Spain’s leading telecoms operator, Telefónica, and that could invest in the company that owns the cable, say sources there. Spain arrests seven over stolen Bacon paintings

Spanish police said Saturday they had arrested seven people suspected of involvement in the theft of five paintings worth €25 million ($27.8 million) by renowned British artist Francis Bacon. The paintings were reported stolen in July 2015 along with a safe containing coin collections and jewellery and have yet to be recovered. Spanish detectives were approached in February by British private investigators specialising in the recovery of stolen artworks who had received an email with photographs of the stolen works asking if they were listed as stolen, national police said in a statement. Investigators then analysed the photo and were able to determine that the camera that took the images was owned by a photographic equipment rental company which supplied details of the customer who had rented it at the time the paintings were photographed. The customer, who is suspected of involvement in the crime, was among those arrested, along with a Madrid art

dealer and his son. Sources close to the investigation said in March that the theft appeared to have been a highly-professional operation which took place while the owner was away in London, with the perpetrators disabling the alarm system. The owner of the paintings was reportedly a close friend of Bacon. Irish-born Bacon died in Madrid in 1992 aged 82 and his expressionistsurrealist works, which are often raw and emotional, remain hugely sought after. Bacon’s death only enhanced his reputation and the 2013 sale of his 1969 work “Three Studies of Lucien Freud” fetched $142,405,000 (€128 million) at auction, a world record at the time. Art market information leader Artprice lists Bacon as one of 10 frontline modern artists alongside the likes of Picasso and Andy Warhol Warhol whose works make up 18 percent of global sales http://www.thelocal.es

'March for Dignity' demonstrators call for jobs and homes for everyone

ort

TENS of thousands of demonstrators took over central Madrid (Saturday) as one of the latest 'Marches for Dignity' calling for 'bread, jobs and a roof'. Over 125 political, social and charitable organisations and unions took part, calling for a 'democratic rebellion in Europe'. They believe the EU should 'give back the democracy it has usurped from the people', largely referring to unworkable deficit targets and bail-out conditions which led the PP government to increase taxes and slash public funding in healthcare, welfare and education. Four processions set off at noon and converged in the central Puerta del Sol square, starting out from the Plaza del Callao, the Plaza Jacinto Benavente, the Plaza de la Villa and from number 30 of the C/ Alcalá. Political parties joining in or offering their public support at a distance included United Left, Podemos and Equo, who have teamed up ahead of the second general elections on June 26 to campaign en bloc. Madrid city council is now run by a faction of the left-wing Podemos – Ahora Madrid – led by ex-judge and now mayoress Manuela Carmena, and her councillor for economy and treasury Carlos Sánchez Mato said the local authority 'simply had to be there to support their battle'. thinkspain

Why You Should Be Putting Lemonade In Your Coffee

health & beauty Tel: 950 121 936 - sales@soltimes.com

a m o n g c o f f e e g e e k s everywhere from Sweden to Mexico. The best part about this new breed of icy beverage? It really couldn’t be easier to make at home—no fancy gear required. Just grab yourself a glass, fill it with ice, and combine lemonade with a shot or two of chilled espresso or cold brew concentrate. Store-bought lemonade is fine (I’m partial to Newman’s Own) as long as i t ’ s not too

As cooling caffeine-delivery systems go, your standard issue cold brew is pretty hard to beat. Hard… but, it turns out, not impossible. The evidence? Consider the Thunderbolt, an icy, tart, insanely refreshing drink that’s just a simple combo of espresso and lemonade. (And which I’ll be drinking every afternoon from now until November.) I first encountered the Thunderbolt two years ago at Smith Canteen, a cafe in my Brooklyn neighborhood, and was immediately hooked. Since then, I’ve discovered that the formula, though inspired, is not wholly original—and actually has a devoted following

sweet. Or, if you really want to play around, try swapping out the still stuff for some sparkling lemonade instead. Indeed, while its origins are hard to pin down, with its tart, citrusy edge, the Thunderbolt does have a lot in common with the espresso tonic, another (seemingly Swedish-derived) coffee trend that’s been the darling of craft coffee shops for a few summers now. (For the uninitiated, it is exactly what it sounds like: a glass of tonic water over ice, topped with a shot of espresso.) Coffee and soda hybrids

of all stripes might just be the “it” drinks of the summer. During a recent swing through Charleston, SC, I stopped in at the Daily and sat in the sun sipping a delightful combination of grapefruit soda and espresso, garnished with a twist of orange peel. At Cocoa Cinnamon in Durham, NC, you can order a dark and sweet Kokytu, which consists of an espresso over an iced cane sugar Mexican Coke. And, at the new Stumptown cafe in New Orleans’ Ace Hotel, they’re serving the “Endless Summer,” a julep-inspired concoction made from cold brew laced with mint simple syrup and sparkling water. But why stop there? We’re already dreaming of an amped-up espresso Dark and Stormy and a cherry cola cold brew. http://news.health.com

T he Ep s om Derby

The Epsom Derby is one of the greatest events on the British sporting and social calendars. Held every year on the weekend of June 3rd and 4th, it always promises to be as memorable as previous years. The Investec Derby Festival has become the grand occasion it is as a result of a rich history and heritage that stretches back centuries. Racing at Epsom began in the early 17th century, although it was banned during Cromwell’s Commonwealth in the years after the English Civil War. The first recorded race meeting was held in 1661. By the 1730s there were two regular meetings, in May and October each year. The Derby itself began in 1780, with the unverified tale being that the name of the race was decided on the toss of a coin by the 12th Earl of Derby and president of the Jockey Club Sir Charles Bunbury. In its first half century, the race became a huge sporting event and a big day out for Londoners of all social classes. Gradually, practices such as on-course betting emerged as racegoers started to follow the sport seriously, studying the form as they sought to back the best horses.

The race went from strength to strength through the 19th century and into the 20th. It was not immune to great social and political developments - most notably in 1913 when suffragette Emily Davison ran on to the course and was fatally run down by the King’s horse, Anmer - but the grandeur of the occasion never wavered. Most importantly, the stars of the show have always been t h e horses. Greats include S e a Bird, the r un away winner of the

Other great figures include the late trainer Henry Cecil, who enjoyed four Derby victories and eight wins in The Oaks.

How to Restore a Rusty Wrought Iron Fence

A wrought iron fence is meant to last for years with proper care. The worst enemy of wrought iron is rust. Rust can severely damage your wrought iron fence and ruin its appearance. You can restore a rusty wrought iron fence to its original appearance and also protect it from future damage.

require sanding all the way down to the metal. You may want to use a drill with a sanding wheel to remove deeper rust. When you can't see anymore rust, go over the fence again with a medium grit sandpaper to remove any remaining rust or flaking paint and smooth any rough areas.

Step 1 - Remove Rust and Old Paint

Buff the entire fence with fine steel wool in a circular motion to smooth and prepare it for painting. Rinse with clear water.

Use a paint scraper to remove any loose or peeling paint. Use a wire brush to scrub rusted areas and loosen rust and old paint. If the rust is heavy, use a drill with a wire wheel to loosen it. Make sure to get into tight areas and joints where rust is most likely to be found. Start with coarse grit sandpaper to sand the entire fence, concentrating on rusty areas. Some areas of deep rust may

Step 2 - Neutralize Rust The key to restoring a wrought iron fence is to remove all the rust. Any rust left behind will continue to spread and ruin the wrought iron even after finishing. Even though you can no longer see any rust on the wrought iron, there may still be some tiny particles remaining. Mix a commercial rust neutralizer per package instructions in a bucket. Dip the wire brush into the solution and scrub the entire fence in a circular motion to neutralize any remaining rust.

using a medium bristled paint brush. Use smooth, even strokes to cover all areas. Allow the paint to dry completely between coats.

Step 4 - Maintenance Wash your wrought iron fence with soapy water twice a year. Oil latches and springs with mineral oil. Use steel wool to buff any scratches or beginning signs of rust and neutralize with lemon juice and vinegar. Use matching rust resistant paint to touch up small areas after neutralizing. PALS DONATE 65,213 Euros in New Ambulance and Defibrillators

On Sunday 29th May PALS (Protection and Life Saving) made their largest and final donation of life saving equipment by the presentation of a new ambulance to the Alcaldesa of Mazarron, Alicia Jimenez at a cost of 56 864 Euros and also provided an additional 6 Defibrillators to the town at a cost of 8349 Euros. The presentation was made at the FAREWELL PALS concert in The Bahia Hotel where 400 hundred people enjoyed a full evening of live music from 6 different bands. When the guys and girls from Cruz Roja joined to have a dance after the presentation they were greeted with a spontaneous round of applause and cheering. The ambulance and defibrillators were a surprise to the audience who applauded the efforts of PALS in their efforts over the past 16 years in which donations now totalling a staggering 317,340. 80 Euros have been made to 112, Cruz Roja, Lorca and Mazarron Ayuntamientos’, FAST and the various Saluds in the area. PALS throughout the years, became the first registered expat charity in the Murcia region, distributed hundreds of Tell The Doctor Books, produced their own informative missive ’The Book’, helped FAST and Forget me Not to get off the ground and provided assistance to other fledgling charities. It was partly due to pressure from PALS that the Health Centre on Camposol was constructed, the only such facility on

an urbanisation anywhere in Spain. Contact with other local humanities charities was always maintained as were open lines of helpful discussion with the various administrations locally and with the Consulate in Alicante. This is the second ambulance with which PALS have been involved but the first independently and the vehicle will augment the current vehicles in use by 112 and Cruz Roja, It was after much discussion and consideration that PALS decided that an ambulance was the most useful purchase they could make to the area, as they emptied their coffers in the winding up of PALS. PALS President Ken Payne, thanked everyone involved with PALS over the years and in particular the current committee whose task in closing down a charity seemed almost as difficult as starting one. He also thanked the thousands of people who have supported and encouraged the PALS effort In closing he thanked Costa Calida Chronicle and Costa Calida International Radio for their continued assistance in providing media outlets, and said that in the interests of transparency the combined accounts of the past 16 years would be published next month.

THIS WAS THEIR FINEST HOUR!

Almost 3500 Euros raised for charity If you did not see the most recent Rascals performance in Los Montesinos, then you missed an absolute treat. From the moment the curtain went up, it was clear that this show oozed professionalism, and could almost be compared to something you might see on the West End. The choice of musical content, which was based on the silver screen had so much variety and the choreography, which was largely down to new recruit Julia Young, had the audience in raptures right from the start. Rascals have always featured some well worked dance routines in their shows, but this year it was clear that they had been very well rehearsed and they were performed expertly. The comedy sketches too were original and very funny indeed. Annette Baldwin, show director said she was so proud of such a wonderful cast, many of whom had only joined Rascals this year, and for some, it was the first time on stage. She continued “when I look back to January I really wondered if we would ever get a show off the ground, because so many of Rascals older members had retired or wanted to take a break. We advertised for new recruits and organised

11

membership rallies in many different areas. I really could not have hoped for the wonderful response we received. Paul and I have dedicated six months of our lives to get this show off the ground, people don’t realise just how much organising is necessary. We have been so lucky to find Julia Young, our choreographer who herself is a performing arts teacher. So what’s next? Well as one retired member said, Rascals have certainly re-invented themselves! Not quite, I don’t think but we are well on the way. We will soon be getting together to decide on our Christmas show! If you would like to join us in any capacity you will be very welcome. Duke of Wellington's daughter Lady Charlotte marries in Granada

DUKE of Wellington Charles Wellesley's daughter, Lady Charlotte married Colombian New Yorker Alejandro Santo Domingo in Íllora (Granada province) yesterday (Saturday) after a 10-month engagement. Among the VIP guests was Lady Charlotte's cousin, Lady Sofía, who wed British singer James Blunt two years ago on a beach in Ibiza. The ninth Duke of Wellington owns a country estate, or finca near Íllora, where the reception was held after the ceremony at the La Encarnación church. Duchess of Cornwall Camilla ParkerBowles, 43-year-old Czech model Eva Herzigova, and the abdicated King Juan Carlos I of Spain – father of the current monarch, Felipe VI – were also among the guests, who suffered a drenching outside the church when the heavens suddenly opened. Despite the downpour, however, the sight of so many celebrities brought crowds of local people out onto the streets with their cameras. Lady Charlotte, 25, whose mother Princess Antonia of Prussia is a descendant of Queen Victoria, and Antonio, 39, a billionaire investment banker in the Big Apple, had been photographed taking time out for a quiet stroll in the village the day before the wedding, and the bride's €300 fringed jeans from 3x1 are already causing copycat high-street versions to fly off the shelves. Described as a 'fun and modern aristocrat' who shakes off the stuffy

stereotypes associated with the British landed gentry, Lady Charlotte Wellesley holds a degree in archaeology and anthropology from Oxford University and currently works as a travelling producer for iconic fashion photographer Mario Testino. She became engaged in July to Alejandro, vice-chairman of beer manufacturing firm SABMiller and MD of Quadrant Capital Advisors, Inc, who holds a Harvard University degree and a fortune of an estimated €4.2 billion. Their engagement party in the Colombian coastal town Cartagena de Indias and the Baru beach, nearly three months ago, went on for three days with 300 rich and famous guests, including the country's president, Juan Manuel Santos. The 19th-century family estate in Íllora which hosted the reception - nearly 1,000 hectares in size and replete with olive groves - has been handed down through the generations of Wellingtons ever since the first Duke was given it as a thank-you gift for his support of Spain against the encroaching invasion of France under Napoleon between 1807 and 1814. It was used by Prince Charles and Princess Diana when the former's relationship with Camilla was unveiled, in order to stall his then wife's finding out. The Wellington dynasty started when the first Duke, Arthur Wellesley, who was then the first Marquise of Wellington, was awarded the title to commend him for his spectacular battle of Waterloo defeat of Napoleon's army, where he was leader

June 2016

of a squadron of Prussian, Flemish and British soldiers. Another 60 victories in the Armed Forces followed for the first Duke of Wellington, who was prime minister under the Conservatives for two legislatures and worked as Master of the Horse – what would now be a yard manager – for King George IV and King William IV. The military tradition was kept alive in the now 200-year-old dynasty, but became a thing of the past with the current Duke, whose career was strictly non-Forces and

encompassed charity work and politics. But the name 'Arthur' has continued to this day: five Dukes have been called Arthur – along with two Henrys and a Gerald – and the 10th Duke of Wellington will also be an Arthur, Lady Charlotte's elder brother, a father of three married to Jemma Kidd, sister of former professional showjumper and model Jodie. thinkspain

Spanish Design Spanish Landscape Design Dos and Don’ts

Spanish-Style Spanish garden design was strongly influenced by the renowned Islamic, Persian and Moorish gardens. Originating in Spain, this style is now popular all over the world, especially in areas with a similar hot, dry climate. The Spanish combined the powerful elements of their influences and perfected the principle of separating spaces or rooms within the garden layout. Walled sections create intimate patio areas, courtyards house impressive fountains and terraces offering views into the landscape are all incorporated into the Spanish garden style.

Although you may find they are changing, their design should have some Contact 950 121 936 or email sales@soltimes.com symmetrical areas to hold the authenticity of the true Spanish garden. eye candy as you’re walking through the garden. Spanish gardens have a drought-tolerant plant pallet; The Spanish garden design has a unique way of large grassy lawns that require lots of water in a hot dry incorporating architecture with private garden spaces, climate just don’t make sense, nor do they represent a real Spanish design. Ceramic tiles are used commonly making it one of the most popular residential garden styles today. Before you start your design consider the architecture of your home and size of your yard. If you don’t have the space to design all of the areas of a Spanish garden, choose one or two and create a powerful design around them. Create focal points in areas and allow plenty of room for a nice outdoor entertainment area; possibly with an outdoor kitchen. The Spanish garden is all about relaxation, enjoyment, sustainability and attention to detail. http://www.landscapingnetwork.com

- are designed down to the smallest detail. The architecture surrounding the courtyard reflects the architecture of the home with Spanish archways and mosaic accents. These courtyards always include a water feature or reflection pool.

2.Terraces - are located throughout the design, often providing overviews of the gardens below. Seating areas and potted plants should be incorporated into these areas as well. 3.Fountains - and the use of water are extremely important in the Spanish design. Getting their influence from Islamic gardens, the Spanish design differs by consisting of multiple small fountains throughout rather than one large fountain in the centre of each outdoor room or courtyard.

They’re At It Again!

Hello and Welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. You know who I am, Where I am, What I do and how much more I have to offer. So let’s get started :-) The other day I got an email from someone who had received a ‘Cold Call’ from someone with an Indian accent claiming to be from Microsoft. This feller asked me to pass on the warning. Having read his email several times I thought that it would be good to reproduce, verbatim, how he handled it. I did ask him if I could use his example and name and he seemed quite happy for me to use both.

George Geoff there please?” Me in a slightly camp tone “why yes I’m George Bryan Cranston Geoff how may I help you?” Caller “oh er, we’ll Mr Geoff were calling to see if you’d be interested in a plan that would stop cold caller phoning you, is it something you might be interested in? Me “oh you have a gorgeous voice! I bet you’re a gym goer aren’t you!” (Still slightly camp) Caller somewhat bemused “ well yeah....... Erm would you be (I cut him short) “I bet you’re really athletic, probably have perfect blue eyes to don’t you ?” Yep still camp! Caller “............ah......ummmm, we’ll their actually brown sir” Me (fatal ammo here) “Brown! OH! That reminds me of marmite, do you know what I do to myself with marmite? “ loud click as a probably mortified cold caller ended the call. Bottom line I’m sick of these calls and generally them messing folk around so I urge people to NOT be rude if you get one of these calls, just mess with the mind of the person on the other end! I’m actually waiting for the next call because I have some real outlandish (sh/w)it waiting in the wings! He says that his next encounter with them will be as a “sweet transvestite from transsexual Transylvania can you feel the antici. ........pation!”. (Rocky Horror Picture Show Fans will immediately recognise the line). I do hope he records the next one because, knowing him over many years, it will be a howling hoot and I can’t wait. So, top and bottom, DO NOT lose you temper, easy done with the invasive provocation that they bring. Remain calm and either 1. Say “No thank you” and hang up before they get a chance to try and draw you in. 2. Just hang up without the “Thank You” or my brand new personal favourite. 3. Play with them while ever you are able to remain in control on the situation. Finally, NEVER EVER offer any personal information (unless it is completely fictional and done “because you can”), Never allow them access to your computer and most importantly, don’t PAY FOR ANY ‘SERVICES’ that they claim to have provided.

It starts: This morning at 09.25 a call from an Indian lady with the unlikely name of MARY SMITH!!! Again from MICROSOFT. ‘Your computer has a virus and when you go into Google or e-mails you are downloading more virus. I can help you with it’. ‘How much will this cost me? How much do you charge?’ ‘No, it is a routine check up’. ‘Are you going to rob my bank account?’ ‘Sorry’ and long pause. I repeated the question. ‘No, I am rich’ (Well by golly. The only person who has said that is a Mr TRUMP!! ‘I have your number which is …. I will do a Malware scan and I will ring you back with the result. Where are you ringing from?’ SHE PUT THE PHONE DOWN!! I won! I hear a lot of voices in the background so there must be a team of them. Very clever, convincing and determined. May be worth another reminder to your readers. Now this gentleman, called Tom Smith claims to be a 71 years old ‘Computer Dumbo’, well my reply to this is “Anyone smart enough to make these lying, thieving, toe-rags hang up is smarter than your average bear”. Well Done Mate! I also have an ex-student of Karate whom I helped up through his black belt. He has since passed my achievements and made my very proud! He has a slightly different way dealing with these ‘Cold Callers’ and it might work for you too. For further information or advice on I goes like this: Caller” is there a

Space to be Amazed Those that love all things quiz know that quiz setters are given a book filled with fiendish questions on graduating from quiz setting school. Quiz setters guard these mythical tomes with their lives much like the Magic Circle does with their magic spells. One question that often stumps the unsuspecting is – what is the nearest star to Earth? Another more relevant question to this article which also comes from the secret book is - what is the largest volcano known to man? The answer may be more earthbound now as scientists mapping the ocean floor found the remains of a Super Volcano 1000 miles off the coast of Japan. It covers an area of 120,000 square miles which considering the British Isles covers 93,000 miles means it’s rather large. Luckily it’s been extinct for over a hundred and forty million years. Currently the world’s largest active volcano is Mauna Loa in Hawaii, yet this whippersnapper covers a mere 2000 square miles. Olympus Mons on Mars spreads over 113,000 miles soaring nearly 14 miles high; reaching a height three times that of Everest. Even at that height Olympus Mons only makes it as the second highest peak in the solar system as up in the Asteroid Belt between Mars and

HOW TO NEGOTIATE ROUNDABOUTS If you are unsure about the correct way to negotiate roundabouts, here are some simple rules to help you enter and exit roundabouts safely and in the right lane. APPROACHING ROUNDABOUTS It’s important to remember to give way to traffic already on the roundabout. If the roundabout is outside urban areas of towns or cities, keep right. If the roundabout is in a built-up area inside a town or city and the lanes are clearly marked, you should use the lane that best corresponds to the exit you need to take. LEAVING ROUNDABOUTS This causes the most confusion amongst drivers. Which lane to choose? Why do I get beeped at if I’m in the right lane? Drivers must exit roundabouts from the right hand lane, because the only way to leave the roundabout is by turning right. This doesn’t mean we always have to enter the roundabout from the right hand lane. It depends on the exit we need to take. However this simple rule, in practice, can be more complex. Let us see some examples. 1st EXIT RIGHT Enter roundabout

keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate and exit roundabout. CONTINUING STRAIGHT ON (e.g. 2nd EXIT STRAIGHT AHEAD) Enter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate prior to exit and leave roundabout. TURNING LEFT OR CHANGING DIRECTION (e.g. 3rd OR FINAL EXIT) Enter roundabout keeping to left hand side lane. Stay in lane until you have passed the exit before your turn off, then change lane by indicating right and giving other road users sufficient time to anticipate your manoeuvre. Don’t forget that drivers circulating in the outside lanes have priority, so use your mirrors to ensure you are not blocking them as you change lanes. Jupiter is Vesta which is what’s known as a Proto Planet. Vesta has a surface area the size of Pakistan with an impact crater called Rheasilvia on it. The peak in the middle of the crater rises up well over14 miles, so standing on tip toes it just pips Olympus Mons to the tallest student in class prize. Even with the highest mountain in the solar system sticking out like an angry spot on its bottom; Vesta is only the second largest lump of rock in the Asteroid Belt that’s not quite a planet, Ceres makes it as the largest. Ceres is about 500 miles across with a surface area the size of India, which sounds large until compared to our own Moon which is 25 times larger. Ceres was discovered in 1801with many thinking it was the missing link. For years astronomers thought there should be another planet in between Mars and Jupiter. Unfortunately Ceres does not fit the very strict criteria to be classed as a planet so it is just a plain old dwarf planet. This is the same class Pluto was demoted to in 2006 giving the solar system just 8 planets instead of the 9 we

were all taught at school. Poor Pluto was also upstaged a year earlier in 2005 when Eris was discovered and named as the largest of all dwarf planets. Eris was originally going to be called Xena after the warrior princess from telly as more female names are needed in space. It starts with X as in Planet-X the mythical planet that is supposed to exist. Mars does win a prize for the largest impact crater in the solar system; it’s called Utopia Planitia and is 2100 miles across. Trekkies will recognise the craters name as in Star Trek lore this is the site of the Federation shipyards; both on the planet Mars and wait for it - in aero synchronous orbit above it. The USS Enterprise-D was built there. Captain Jean Luc Picard as played by the ever young Patrick Stewart was the commanding officer for most of that starships life. I apologize in advance to any Trekkie reading if my Star Trek history is not quite exact on this but there’s no need to write in with any corrections.

Britain’s Got Talent final draws lowest audience in show’s history The final of this year’s Britain’s Got Talent drew the lowest audience in the show’s 10-year history, according to overnight figures. An average of eight million people tuned in to watch the finale as it was broadcast live, with an additional 500,000 watching on ITV+1. Viewing peaked at 9.7 million as Army bandsman and magician Richard Jones was announced the winner. The previous low was in 2014, when 10.7 million saw singing act Collabro win. Jones, a lance corporal of The Household Cavalry, impressed the judges and public with his military-themed act. “I can’t believe it, thank you so much to everyone that voted - it’s been an incredible experience, it means the world to me,” the 25-year-old said. The first magician to ever win the talent show, he wins a £250,000 prize and the opportunity to appear at the Royal Variety Performance. Live viewing represented a 39.7% share of all TV viewing, although final consolidated figures - where all on demand and catch-up viewing is taken into account - will not be known for a week. An ITV spokeswoman said audiences peaked at 10.5 million viewers when ITV+1 figures were added. The finale was broadcast at the same time as the Uefa Champions League Final between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, which was broadcast on subscription service BT Sport and YouTube free of charge. The final usually counts itself as one of the most-watched programmes of the year. However, this year it is unlikely to feature in the top 10. Wearing his Household Cavalry uniform, Jones’s act featured a card trick which told the story of Britain’s oldest living magician, Fergus Anckorn, and how he used magic to help him cope with being a prisoner of war

in Singapore. The act culminated in bringing the 97-year-old out on stage. Receiving a standing ovation from the judges, Alesha Dixon described the performance as “poignant, noble and brilliantly British”.

The French-American model and actress calls father ‘the sweetest, most loving person I know’

Speaking on Britain’s Got More Talent after the main show, head judge Simon Cowell said he thought the public voted Jones the winner not just because of his skill as a magician.

Model Lily-Rose Depp, 17, posted a message and photo on social media, defending her father Johnny Depp after abuse allegations surfaced last week.

“I think people rooted for him as a person,” he said. “His presentation, his whole performance was immaculate - it was very patriotic and heart-warming and he deserved to win.” Fellow judge Amanda Holden added: “I’m absolutely delighted because when magic first started on Britain’s Got Talent it was rubbish and after 10 years he has done such a great job.” The Army tweeted its congratulations to Jones, as well as a picture of The Band of the Household Cavalry celebrating his win. Swing singer Wayne Woodward - who became the bookmakers’ favourite late on Saturday afternoon - finished as the runner-up with his rendition of Nina Simone’s Feeling Good. Boogie Storm, a group of disco dancing Star Wars stormtroopers, were voted third. Also among the 12 finalists was sword swallower Alex Magala, whose act had to be pre-recorded for safety reasons. It involved him sliding upside down a pole, while handcuffed, stopping centimetres above a powered chainsaw. Other finalists included schoolgirl singers Jasmine Elcock and Beau Dermott, mother and son duo Mel and Jaime, 100 Voices of Gospel, dancers Shannon and Peter and Balance Unity, impersonator Craig Ball and dancing dog Trip Hazard. http://www.bbc.com

Model Lily-Rose Depp, 17, posted a message and photo on social media, defending her father Johnny Depp after abuse allegations surfaced last week. Johnny Depp’s daughter, Lily-Rose, is standing by her father following allegations of domestic abuse. The 17-year-old model and actress posted a baby photo with her father on social media Sunday. “My dad is the sweetest, most loving person I know,” the Instagram post reads. “He’s been nothing but a wonderful father to my little brother and I [sic], and everyone who knows him

would say the same.” Depp’s estranged w i f e , A m b e r H e a r d , alleges the 52-yearold actor repeatedly hit her during a recent fight and threw a phone at her cheek, leaving her face bruised. After a hearing in a Los Angeles court, Heard got a restraining order against Depp, which will remain in effect until the next hearing in court June 17. Actress Amber Heard leaves Los Angeles Superior Court court May 27 after giving a sworn declaration that her husband Johnny Depp threw her cellphone at her during a recent fight, striking her cheek and eye. (Richard Vogel/Associated Press) Depp has not yet spoken publicly about the allegations. His lawyer,

Laura Wasser, contended that Heard’s filing, along with requests for financial assistance from the Alice Through the Looking Glass actor, appear to be “in response to the negative media attention she received earlier this week after filing for divorce.” Heard, a successful model and actress, filed for divorce last week from Depp after 15 months of marriage, citing irreconcilable differences. Lily-Rose and her brother Jack, 14, are Depp’s children from a previous relationship with French singer-actress Vanessa Paradis, which lasted 14 years. http://www.bbc.com

Top Gear return

The relaunch of BBC Two's Top Gear was seen by an average of 4.4 million viewers, overnight figures show.

New host Chris Evans said earlier in the week he would be "disappointed" with anything fewer than five million viewers for the show's first episode. The final Top Gear featuring former host Jeremy Clarkson attracted 5.3 million viewers last June. But the new show was still the most watched programme in its 20:00 time slot, attracting 22.8% of the audience. Its nearest rival was the British Soap Awards on ITV, which were seen by an average of 3.9 million viewers. The first episode featured Chris Evans and Matt

e ap sc E er m m Su y n n Su a r fo s ge 5 Spanish Villa

Arcos de la Frontera

For decades, Spain has been one of Europe's top destinations for summer travellers looking to enjoy her beaches, cuisine, world-class museums, and laid-back lifestyle. This popularity, however, has come at a cost, with many scenic coastal areas now dominated by behemoth, often-charmless resort chains, and a loss of the distinct Mediterranean authenticity that so many travellers crave. Nevertheless, Spain still boasts a treasure trove of charming, peaceful villages and stunning landscapes for travellers willing to get off the beaten path.

We've combed through thousands of real-life recommendations from travellers and locals on minube to find out the best villages in Spain for a summer break or weekend getaway. From sleepy Asturian fishing towns to AndalucĂa's stunning white villages, here's a selection of Spain's best towns for a sunny summer escape.

1.) Frigiliana

Frigiliana is an Andalucian white village par excellence: a cluster of pristine white-washed homes and picturesque courtyards covered in geraniums and violets, cascading down the mountainside towards the sea in a backdrop of lemon, orange, and olive groves. While Frigiliana has been spared the masstourism of neighbouring Nerja, making it ideal for a quiet retreat, locals also suggest visiting at the end of August when Frigiliana holds its popular Three Cultures Festival celebrating the village's history. (Photo by Miguel A. Cartagena)

2.) Banyalbufar

Nestled in the Tramontana Mountains of western Mallorca, the sleepy village of Banyalbufar packs a touristic punch considerably larger than its size (only around 600 inhabitants). The surrounding countryside was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the closet cove, Cala Banyalbufar, is a quiet, idyllic crescent of crystal blue water. If you're not feeling outdoorsy, you can also explore the town's rambling streets and enjoy a glass of local Malvasia wine on one of the ocean view terraces. (Photo by Andres Rullan)

best-preserved medieval town in Cataluña is no secret, and it can get full in high summer, especially in August, so most travellers on minube suggest visiting in early summer or early autumn.

3.) Arcos de la Frontera The reigning king of the Andalucía's famous White Villages is defiantly Arcos de la Frontera, a charming cliff-top hamlet only an hour's drive from Cadiz. Widely considered one of Spain's most beautiful villages, Arcos de la Frontera's charm lies in its narrow streets and immaculate white walls decorated with flowering vines and colorful tilework. One of this village's main draws its location: the beach, the spectacular Doñana National Park, the Grazalema Mountains, and the splendours of Seville all within slightly more than an hour's drive.

Pedraza

4.) Pedraza

About an hour and a half north of Madrid, travellers will find one of the jewels of central Spain: Pedraza. While the regional capital, Segovia, has attracted international travellers for years, Pedraza is a favourite among locals due to its imposing castle, impressive views, atmosphere which recalls the 16th century. However, Pedraza is most famous for its hearty cuisine based on local specialties like lamb and suckling pig roasted in wood-fire ovens.

5.) Besalú

The moment visitors pass over Besalú's trademark 12th century bridge, it's clear they've entered a different world entirely; the narrow alleyways of the Jewish district adorned with Romanesque engravings give way to seductive tapas bars offering some of the best regional cuisine in Cataluña. However, Besalú's reputation as the

More Than 3,000 New Companies in Tourism Sector Created in First Quarter of 2016

Many factors are indicating that this year is going to be another record year for the tourism sector. International visitor numbers are already up on last year, tourists are spending more money and hotel occupation has already been fairly high. But not only this, the situation is looking good for businesses in Spain as well, and recent figures show that during the first three months of 2016, a total of 3,325 new businesses within the tourism sector were established. This news is much needed, especially after more than 2,100 companies within the sector folded over the last 8 years because of the economic crisis. And, the increase in the number of new businesses related to tourism in the first quarter of this year is 32.3% higher than for the same period in 2015. Not only that, but this is the largest rise in the number of commercial businesses in the last 10 years. It is worth noting that that majority of new businesses created within the sector between January and March belong to the food and drink industry (81.5%), while the rest of them are made up of hotel and accommodation businesses and travel agents. The number of new businesses being created each year in the tourism sector began to decline in 2007, although it was 2009 that saw the lowest number of new companies registered, with just 6,000. By 2015, the figure had reached 9,800 for the whole year. Thankfully, new companies in the tourism sector are being established in greater numbers, and according to data, owners are investing a greater amount of capital into them as well. And, statistics have also revealed that fewer businesses within the sector are having to close down due to bankruptcy. The number of failed companies fell by 15% during the first quarter of 2016, with only 89 going into liquidation. Twenty-seven of these belonged to the hotel industry, while 61 were dedicated to selling food and drink. The greatest number of businesses within the tourism sector failed in 2013, with a total of 608. Last year, in 2015, this was reduced to just over half, at 312, with the majority of those going under being in the food and drink industry. Those least affected were the travel agencies. Let’s hope that the worst is now finally behind us and that Spain can continue to prosper and create new employment and jobs for many more people. Source: www.eleconomista.es

The Portacabin 2

It was the day of my next chemo, session 4, and a fortnight after my plastered arm had prevented this taking place. It was also a week after I should have had a portacabin (properly known as a port-a-cath) put in my chest. As this had not happened I was already 5 weeks since my last session. I knew at the time that the Receptionist’s promise of ‘We’ll ring you’ was not going to happen, and I was armed and ready for conflict. I turned my steps and battle face to Demanda Cirugia, who I believed were the root cause of the problem. I proffered my piece of paper. ‘Yes,’ said the Receptionist. ‘You have to go to General Surgery for them to make the appointment.’ I staggered under the huge weight of Deja-Vu. ‘No,’ I explained patiently. ‘I have been to General Surgery. I saw you a fortnight ago, and you said you would phone me.’ ‘We will.’ ‘I am on the Priority List. The operation was to have been last week.’ ‘We’ll phone you.’ (Subtext – Go away). The opening shot had been fired. Battle was engaged. However, as a wise General deploys his troops for maximum victory with least causalities I turned on my heel and headed for Oncology. Senior Nursie saw me coming, and scooped up Consulta Victoria Eugenia. ‘What? Operation not done? Take her back to Demanda, it should have been done.’ Victoria Eugenia is a serious, restrained lady, but I could see she was peeved. I trotted obediently in Nursie’s

I stayed out of harm’s way outside, listening to the salvo and counter salvo from within. One side or the other must have run low on armaments, because she emerged as quickly as she had entered, face flushed and jaw set. In retreat, but not defeated, we galloped back to Oncology and Victoria Eugenia. She listened, uttered the word ‘Sit’, nailed her colours to the mast and picked up the phone. I have no idea who she phoned. She did not raise her voice, nor did she show any outward sign of even the slightest loss of temper, but she was inexorable. I was impressed – she was as relentless as a small but determined glacier. She replaced the phone and met my anxious eye. ‘They will phone you. The operation will be this week.’ They did. It was.

This animal-loving photographer has spent the last decade snapping incredible photos of majestic African elephants in the wild. Australian native Bobby-Jo Clow, 33, has been taking pictures of beautiful elephants since 2004, when she was left mesmerised after seeing her first wild elephant in Kenya. Since then, she has made regular pilgrimages to southern and eastern Africa to capture the stunning creatures on camera in their natural habitat. Now, Bobby-Jo has narrowed down her thousands of images to just 200, and is planning to create a book of her beautiful pictures called Reflections of Elephants along with written reflections of writers, poets, conservationists and elephant experts from around the globe.

choose either the familiar 148bhp 1.4 TFSI or the equally powerful 2.0 TDI. Both of those engines are available with front- or four-wheel drive, while the range-topping 188bhp petrol and diesel motors are exclusively offered in Quattro form. What’s it like? It’s certainly firmer than the A. The standard passive dampers allow surprisingly little wheel travel Audi Q2 1.4 TSI S Tronic by SUV standards, so there’s head toss aplenty along lumpy roads. The The Q2 shares most of its underpinnings with the slightly longer, optional adaptive setup brings some welcome longer wave compliance but lower and narrower, A3 hatch. when called upon (by choosing Audi says the Q2 “can’t be Comfort mode), although actually pigeonholed” but we’ll have a go struggles more to keep wheel and because, from where we’re standing, road in contact over the really rough, this very much a small SUV in the broken-up stuff. mould of a Nissan Juke or a Mini The upside of is fairly tidy body Countryman. It just happens to wear control by class standards – at least a more premium badge and look a through tight, low-speed corners. All bit more interesting than most other versions come with Audi’s variable modern Audis, thanks largely to its unusually chamfered shoulder line and Progressive steering, which gives excellent manoeuvrability in town and contrasting C-pillar. only adds to that feeling of agility that Prices will start from around £20k and isn’t present in any rival – even the the line-up of engines kicks off with Mini Countryman. Wider experience a 114bhp 1.0 turbo triple, although tells us a conventional rack may be Audi reckons the bulk of buyers will preferable for faster driving, but

confirmation of that will have to wait until we’ve driven the Q2, well, faster. Inside, the Q2’s close relationship with the A3 is blindingly obvious, but that’s hardly a criticism because Audi’s premium hatch is as plush as it gets below £30k. Look a little closer and you’ll notice mildly restyled air vents, the odd more angular surface and one of two harder plastics (some because our car was a prototype, others because Audi reckons an SUV should be slightly more rugged). By any standards, though, the Q2’s cabin is a suitably pleasant place to be. If space is a priority there are larger SUVs in this price bracket, including the Nissan Qashqai. That said, the Q2 isn’t exactly cramped inside. There’s lots of head room in the back, despite that swooping roofline, and just about enough knee room for taller adults. Boot space is marginally better than a A3 Sportback, and marginally worse than a Qashqai, at 405 litres with the seats up. Of the three trim levels – SE, Sport and S Line – Audi reckons more than half of buyers will plump for Sport. It looks like the pick to us because for a £1550 premium you get sat-nav, auto

lights and wipers, cruise control and that contrasting C-pillar. Should I buy one? A pint-sized SUV with an Audi badge on it is as close to a guaranteed sales success as there is in 2016. And if you’re sold on the idea of a (slightly) jacked-up driving position, a swanky cabin and mildly butch styling, there’s every reason you might want to wait for the Q2 to arrive. A more thorough assessment of the Q2’s dynamic prowess will have to wait until we drive a production version on European roads. But aside from our reservations about ride comfort, Audi’s smallest SUV yet looks to be classy, practical and surprisingly good value – at least compared with the closest premium-badge-wearing competition.

Book Review

The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galraith

www.carolnaylor.blogspot.com - www.carolesleynaylor.wordpress.com - naylorcl@hotmail.es

“Her head had bled a little into the snow. The face was crushed and swollen, one eye reduced to a pucker, the other showing as a sliver of dull white distended lids.” A dramatic opening, the death of a beautiful supermodel in suspicious circumstances, having fallen from her Mayfair penthouse caused a big stir with the paparazzi. Detective Inspector Roy Carver and Detective Sergeant Eric Wardle were on the case. Lula Landy, like the late Princess Diana was one of the most photographed women in the world. It seems that both women were hounded to death by the pressure of celebrity and attention. Her death dominated the news showing her “flawless face, her lithe and sculpted body” but within three months “The frenzy wore itself into staleness.” Lula was an interesting character, having been adopted by a wealthy white family. She had been investigating her biological roots and had discovered a black half-brother who she had made contact with. She was expelled from school for dabbling in drugs and ran off to London to live rough with addicts. Her on-off boyfriend was an addict, violent at times, a musician called Evan Duffield and she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. She had been signed up by Guy Some the fashion designer after winning a modelling contract worth 5 million pounds over 2 years. When she died she had accumulated a fortune of 10 million. Before her death there had been a row with Duffield and he became chief suspect but at this stage, the conclusion amounted to: “The poor cow jumped. There was no one else there.” No further investigation. Three months later we meet her adopted half-brother, John Bristow, a lawyer for Landry, May and Patterson. He chooses Cordoran Strike , Private Detective with an equally interesting past who is down on his luck. His military career came to an abrupt end with a serious injury when he lost part of his leg. His long term girlfriend and his turbulent relationship with Charlotte has finally floundered and he has nowhere to sleep other than his office in Denmark Street. His finances have hit rock-bottom and he has acquired a temp called Robin, intelligent and down-to-earth who he cannot afford without any paying clients. Bristow seems to be the lifeline that Strike desperately needs. He chose Strike to reopen the case of Lula because of his connection with Charlie who was John’s adopted brother who died when he was 9 years of age. Strike and Charlie had been bosom friends for two months prior to Charlie’s fatal accident.

“They say my sister killed herself. I don’t believe it.” Strike is initially sceptical and reluctant to take on the case having decided that the police investigation was thorough and he believed the final verdict of suicide. But he is interested to hear evidence from a neighbour, Tansy Bestigui who overheard a heated argument seconds before Lula died. She was convinced that Lula was pushed over her balcony. The police had dismissed her evidence because she had been taking cocaine. Strike takes on the case and he is offered twice the going rate which will partly solve his mountainous debts. A string of interviews with all of the characters who had had contact with Lula make it compelling reading and the suspense is kept ticking over until the finale which is likened to an Agatha Christie climax when the murderer is revealed, and all the facts of the case spilled out in thorough detail. Cormoran Strike comes out of this very well. He outwitted the police force and deserves our uttermost respect. By the end of the case his reputation has spread and he has clients coming to his dingy office. Things are looking up. You’ll have guessed by now that J.K. Rowling was the author. When she sent her manuscript anonymously to Orion Books it was rejected. The sequel was published recently: “The Silkworm” which I am sure will be as successful. Rowling is certainly a master storyteller and I loved it. Publisher: Sphere. ISBN: 978-0-7515-4925-6 REVIEW it by Carol Naylor.

Traffic on the Roads in the Alicante Province Increase for First Time Since the Crisis Living just off the N332 in Torrevieja that leads up to the busy shopping centre at La Zenia, I’ve definitely noticed that there is a lot more traffic than there was at this time of the year last year. In fact, since Christmas queues going up the N332 at certain times of the day haven’t abated in the slightest, and even the traffic in town seems quite a lot more hectic than it was. So it comes as no surprise to me to read in the local Spanish press the other day that according to the Department for Housing, Public Works and Transport Communication, traffic on the roads in the Alicante province has increased for the first time since the start of the economic crisis back in 2007. And, while it may be annoying for anyone using the roads, it is actually great news for the economy as it indicates a recovery in activity after years of stagnation. Last year, a total of 1.6 billion cars used the roads within the province, which, although it’s a similar figure to 2012, it is 3% higher than the amount registered in 2014. What is more, this is the first rising figure year-upon-year since 2007. The economic crisis was reflected in the amount of traffic on the roads due to less activity taking place across all sectors. Those particularly affected included the construction sector, which also generated a lot of traffic. And it’s apparent now that much of the rise in traffic is economic-activity related because of the increase in the number of lorries and heavy goods vehicles on the roads, which has gone up 5.2% in the last year. Much of this increased activity is also taking place around industrial estates and business parks. Rising fuel prices also negatively influenced the amount of activity on our roads during the crisis, with fewer journeys taking place due to the high cost of filling up. The volume of cars on the road fell by a massive 25% between 2007 and 2014, and, while the slight increase in traffic registered last year does not mean that we are seeing the same number of cars on the roads

BMW has officially launched the M4 CS a limited edition version of the M4 that will be sold exclusively in Spain.

as before the crisis hit, it does display a recuperation. Local traffic increased in 2015 in all the geographic areas that the province is divided into, but this was particularly noticeable around the cities of Villena (+6.6%) and Alcoy (+4.3%) and along the Alicante-ElcheCrevillente axis (+4.1%).

with the adaptive M chassis, carbon-ceramic brakes and the M DKG seven-speed dual clutch transmission. Exclusive 20-inch wheels round out the package.

However, in absolute terms, the highest figures for the number of cars in an area were registered in the Vega Baja area, where 10.5 million more cars were recorded on the roads, taking the total up to 572 million for the year. The access roads to Torrevieja, Benidorm and Denia have registered the greatest figures in terms of traffic intensity, together with the ring road linking San Vicente de Raspeig and Sant Joan d’Alacant. These points generate 20,000 cars that pass through on a daily basis and often suffer congestion problems at various peak traffic times of the day. Source: www.diarioinformacion.com Only 60 units of the M4 CS will be produced and all 60 examples will be sold exclusively within Spanish borders. The Competition Sport edition of the M4 has been created in a similar vein to the M4 GTS. The CS, however, is being built as a more civilized and usable version of the GTS. The rear seats in the CS have been created with a more usable compound similar to that used in the M4 Coupe. The CS also gets a bump in power. Total output is set at 450 horsepower with a top speed of 280 km/h. The car has also been fitted

A drunk driver seemingly became confused over which lane to approach Torrevieja off the N-332 main road on Monday, instead choosing the cycle lane. Unfortunately, as the cycle lane is not designed for the purpose of carrying cars, the vehicle came to an abrupt stop. The Guardia Civil attended the scene and found the driver to have consumed an excessive amount of alcohol and now faces the consequences of those actions, lucky to have not killed anybody in the process. The damaged vehicle had to be recovered from the scene by a tow truck.

LINEA DIRECTA NATIONALS ENTERS SECOND WEEK

As the Línea Directa National Bowls Competition reaches the semi final stages the organisers said that they could not have wished for a better first week with both the weather and the standard of bowling surpassing all expectations. In the Ladies Singles the major surprise of the opening 7 days saw the current champion, Indalo’s Jan Dando, go out at the quarter Final stage on Friday to the former pro golfer, Simone Morgan from Santa Maria, with the Malaga Champion of Champions runner up coming from 9-2 down to take the match by 21-14. She will now meet Ann Eagle of San Miguel, the 2007 National Champion, in the semi final, while Quesada’s Mel Highland, quarter final conqueror of the Emerald Isle’s Mary Whitelock, will face Julie Lincoln. In the Men’s Singles the Emerald Isle’s Frank Close goes into next week’s semi Final in good form against Chris Brazier of Quesada. On home turf the congenial Geordie is the man to beat having been only narrowly edged out in the recent final of the Champion of Champions Competition at Greenlands. It could be an all Emerald Isle final with the home club’s Dennis Rhodes meeting Martin Foulcer of Vistabella, in the other semi final The semi finals of the Men’s Pairs sees Dennis and John Pooley paired with Dave Blackie and Scott Malden while Harry Rhodes and Terry Morgan will meet Paul Parkes and Julian Pering. Ann Eagle also features in the semi

final’s of the Ladies Pairs competition with her partner, San Miguel Club Secretary, Pat McKewan. Their opponents will be club colleagues Lin Miller and Chris Parsons. In the second semi the current champions are still very much in the hunt as Jacqui Johnston looks to make up for the disappointment of her exit from the singles with partner Mel Highland. But the twosome will not have their own way as they too face stiff opposition from Carol Broomfield and Peta Rhodes, also of Quesada.

Walking Footballis now in San Miguel!

Jacqui and Mel also feature in the semi finals of the Mixed Triples where they are joined by Mel’s husband Colin, as the threesome attempt to see off Tenerife’s sole representatives, the Cathcart family. National team manager Graham will be partnered by brother Robert and mother Grace as the trio representing Teide Bowls Club, attempt to reach their first ever Nationals Final. The second triples semi will pitch Ann and Carl Eagle with Bob Nesbitt against Frank and Dave Close and Yvonne Mallaburn. See the Spanish Nationals Facebook page for the very latest news and information. Score Morgan v Dando Club – Mary Whitelock Club – Chris Brazier Martin Foulcer Dennis Rhodes

Our announcement a few weeks ago of a new Walking Football for the over 50’s, club starting up in San Miguel de Salinas had a great response, thank you. Los Amigos Golf Society; Captains Day May 2016

Stirling Bridge, Falkirk, Bannockburn, Boroughmuir, to these famous English-Scottish conflicts we can now add ‘The Battle of Valle de Este’. For it was a mighty Celtic army under the charismatic warlord Mick ‘Wallace’ Drummond who challenged the Regal Saxon Baron, Ron ‘Razor’ Johnston to do battle at a place known as the Great Glen of Valle De Este, a fitting venue for a captain to have his day! Forty four battle hardened warriors set forth from camp Camposol in customary Celtic summer weather.... pouring down with rain! After travelling by chariot for over an hour our brave soldiers arrived at the great glen and were met with a traditional hearty breakfast provided by the comely wench Karen at Ye Olde Sports Bar Inn. Conditions improved much to the disappointment of the Celtic army and the Saxons, with a spring in their step, took to the battle ground in good heart. The heather, gorse and bracken had all been cleared and conditions could not have been kinder to the gentlemen Saxons. The Celtic barbarians however took this in their stride and a very closely fought battle ensued. Conflict took many forms; light infantry, 2 ball better ball, cavalry charges, Texas scramble and hand to hand singles. The battle was intense and for most

dangerous. Gordon Neilson fired a volley towards its target, it struck a turret and ricocheted back narrowly missing him and his company! Thankfully for all the charge failed to explode...or score any points! The dead eye dicks on the day were: Hole 2 - Gareth Buckland (3 mtrs), Hole 6 - Joe Malone (5.1 mtrs), Hole 12 - Willie Crosby (2 mtrs) and Hole 14 - Neil Macfarlane (just 0.29 metres from the pin!). Following the battle, those who survived were again treated to fine fayre at Ye Olde Sports Bar Inn before the long journey home. The next evening, following a night in intensive care for many, the spoils were shared. A very close battle had taken place and it took many negations and much horse trading to finally separate the armies. However a winner was announced in The Black Bull hostelry and the Saxons had prevailed.....by just two points! The celebrations went on long into the night with both teams settling their differences over flagons of olde Ale and then tucking into a might feast (chosen by the Great Celtic General, Mick Drummond) of a traditional Haggis supper!

Sucina Golf Society, Roda Golf, Tuesday, 17th May Our first of two games this year at Roda. 32 players turning up for an Individual Stableford, counting towards Player of the Year 2016, and in addition a team game were all 4 scores counted. Another warm day with an early start. The first players teeing off at 9 o’clock, so some alarm clocks had been set very early. Presentation of the prizes was held back at Franc y Louise Bar in Sucina and sandwiches were provided for the players. The Course was in good condition, though hollow tinning on the greens during play did cause some frustrations and hold ups for players on their approach to the greens. No mention of this had

been made prior to, or on the day, so on the return to the Bar after the game, there were more than one complaints from players. Hopefully in the future Roda will provide us with advance warning. The winners on the day were: Div 1 – Roger Major 38 pts, Div 2 – Tommy McDonnell 38 pts and Div 3 – Mike Harding 39 pts. Some excellent scores and I am sure our Handicap Secretary will have his “ scissors “ out this month! NTP’s went to: Hole 2Colin Griffiths, Hole 7 Dave Hurst, Hole 11 John Storey and Hole 13 Tony Syme. Overall Winning Team comprised of: John Storey, Ian White, Alan Leonard & Roger Major with a total of 136pts. Fantastic results and well done to all our Winners on the day. Our next outing is on Tuesday 21st June at Lo Romero.

Monaco Grand Prix: Lewis Hamilton ends Monte Carlo hoodoo with superb win in the rain

Lewis Hamilton steers his way to first victory in Monaco since 2008 Daniel Ricciardo rues Red Bull’s pitstop mix-up that surrendered his lead Sergio Perez claims rare podium finish for Force India ewis Hamilton is a winner at Monaco again, in the most pulsating race here in recent memory, and even more importantly than that, he is a winner in Formula One again after seven months away from the top step. One of his greatest ever drives, channelling his hero, Ayrton Senna, with some brilliant defensive driving, claws him right back into the world championship. Not so much a move but Hamilton’s ability to stop Ricciardo making a move. Particularly on worn wet tyres, with Ricciardo on fresh intermediates, it was a masterclass of defensive driving. Once onto slicks, he rode his luck at times, attracting a stewards’ investigation for running straight out

at the chicane. But the verdict was no further action. Quite right too. It allowed this one to be decided on track. Oh dear. How the mighty can fall. After the most sublime performance under immense pressure in Spain, becoming the youngest grand prix winner of all time, this was a dire weekend for the 18-year-old. The cockpit protection has been provisionally agreed for 2017 and while it has the support of a decent number of drivers, there are some vocal opponents; Hamilton for one. Feedback from fans has also been relatively poor. http://www.telegraph.co.uk

Real Madrid - Atlético Madrid Champions League

After a gripping 120 minutes of action, the second all-Madrid final in as many years had to be decided with a penalty shoot-out. Ronaldo slotted home the winner after Juanfran's miss. After a thrilling spectacle of football it's Cristiano Ronaldo's penalty that clinches the Champions League title for Zidane's team. The Portugal international was largely anonymous throughout the entirety of the game but made no mistake from twelve yards after Juanfran's miss set things up perfectly for him to overwrite his poor performance. Atlético started slowly and quickly found themselves trailing through an offside Ramos goal. However, as the first half wore on Simeone’s Mattress Makers began to get a foothold of the ball and went into the dressing room at half time with their spirits slightly higher. El Cholo brought on Carrasco for the beginning of the second half

and the Belgian made an immediate impact. Despite Griezmann failing to convert a 46th minute penalty, the Rojiblancos kept at it and eventually got an equaliser through the aforementioned substitute. Although it was pretty much one-way traffic after the restart, Atleti couldn’t fully capitalise on their dominance and the match had to go to extra-time. Again, it was Atlético who enjoyed the bulk of the chances as Madrid’s forward line started dropping like flies due to cramp and fatigue, and again they couldn't pull themselves in front. The first seven spot-kicks hit the net and then, in heartbreaking fashion, Juanfran directed his effort off the goal frame. Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up next and fired a powerful shot past Oblak to compound Altético's misery and secure Madrid's eleventh European Cup. http://en.as.com

Muguruza through to last eight at expense of Kuznetsova Spanish fourth seed Garbiñe Muguruza reached the French Open quarter-finals for the third year in a row when a solid display earned her a 6-3 6-4 victory against former champion Svetlana Kuznetsova on Sunday. Muguruza, who has yet to make it to the last four in Paris, played aggressively throughout, leaving little breathing space for the Russian 13th seed, the 2009 Roland Garros champion. Muguruza peppered the court with winners -- which made up for numerous unforced errors -- and broke decisively on her seventh opportunity to lead 5-3 in the opening set. She closed it out with a booming forehand winner and broke again in the third game of the second set with a service return winner. Kuznetsova saw a lifeline when she broke back to 4-4 as Muguruza started to get inconsistent, only for the Spaniard to break again in the following game with a fine passing shot. Muguruza,

however, showed signs of nerves and wasted two match points before serving a double fault. She regained her composure, though, and wrapped it up on her fifth match point when Kuznetsova's backhand sailed long. The 22-year-old Venezuelan-born fourth seed will next play the winner of the tie between Shelby Rogers of the United States and Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania for a place in the semi-finals.
