Spain rejected seven of every 10 asylum requests in 2015

Yearly report from Spanish Commission for Refugee Aid warns of “serious setback” in terms of international protection for displaced peoples The Spanish Commission for Refugee Aid (CEAR) warned on Thursday that last year just three out of every 10 requests for asylum that were examined were accepted in Spain. That’s 31%, down from 44% the year before. In other words, Spain rejected seven out of every 10 requests that were accepted for consideration. By nationality, Spain has received most asylum requests from Syria, with 5,724 people last year The increased controls at borders and inaction when it comes to offering legal means to request international protection in Europe and Spain has caused “a serious setback” and has put a human right such as asylum “in danger,” according to the yearly report from CEAR. In the case of Spain, which in 2015 registered 15,000 requests, the document reveals that just 3,240 were resolved, of which 31% (1,020) were granted. The EU average for granting such requests is 50%. The percentage has fallen despite a rise in the volume of requests, the report explains. The 15,000 registered in Spain in 2015 is well up on the 6,000 seen the year before. “Spain has broken a

scrawny record,” explained CEAR general secretary Estrella Galán at the presentation of the report, given that it has only received 1% of the total number of requests in the EU, which come in at 1.3 million. Countries such as Germany and Sweden have seen 476,000 and 162,000 requests, respectively. By nationality, Spain has received most asylum requests from Syria, with 5,724 people last year. Next is Ukraine, with 3,440, and Palestine, with 809. Of the requests, 63% were from men, and 37% from women. CEAR warns that European states are putting “impediments” in the way of refugees exercising their right to asylum, forcing them to seek routes that are more and more dangerous, among which are those that include crossing the Mediterranean, which is “the deadliest route in the world,” according to the NGO. Galán explained that one in every 27 people who tries to reach Europe via that sea route ends up dead, a rate that has risen over the months of April and May to one in every 17. CEAR estimates that 3,000 people have died so far in 2016 trying to make the crossing. “International agreements have been left to flounder in the Mediterranean,” she concluded. elpais

Five road crash deaths and A-7 shut in Murcia Region

A SPECTACULAR crash between two lorries and two cars on the A-7 motorway through the Murcia Region has left three dead and four seriously injured. One of the refrigeration lorries veered over the central reservation and overturned and another collided with it, causing both to burst into flames, which spread to one of the two cars which ran into them. The driver and passenger of the burning car, and the driver of the first lorry which overturned were killed by the fire. Another man, who was at the wheel of the second lorry, suffered very serious burns and multiple broken bones, whilst the driver and passenger of the second car and a Guardia Civil officer had to be treated for smoke inhalation. Five ambulances, a helicopter, the Guardia Civil and the fire brigade rushed to the scene, and the four injured parties were taken to different hospitals including the Virgen de la Arrixaca and the Reina Sofía. The motorway was blocked off in a southbound direction at the site of the accident – in the tied hamlet of Monteagudo towards the coast north of its ‘parent’ municipality, Murcia city – and traffic was diverted down the RM-423, rejoining the A-7 further down. Intermittent tailbacks were reported in a northbound direction. The multiple tragedy, recorded at exactly 14.33hrs yesterday (Saturday), was one of three fatal crashes in the region within minutes of each other. A driver became trapped in his car on the RM-424 between the wine-producing town of Yecla, and Pinoso, at kilometre 15.5, and had died before the fire brigade was able to cut him free from the wreckage. A woman driving the second car involved in the crash, recorded at 14.17hrs, managed to get out by herself. Just three hours later on the high street, or C/ Mayor in El Raal – a tied hamlet of Murcia – a motorbike and a car smashed into each other opposite number 393. A man was taken to the Reina Sofía hospital, and a woman went into cardiact arrest at the scene. Medics continued to work on trying to revive her as the Armed Forces emergency response unit took her to hospital, but she passed away before she reached the centre. thinkspain

American honeymooner suffers racist attack in Malaga

The group of youths reportedly shouted “Chinese” as they beat up the 22-year-old American. An American man has been beaten up in a racist attack while enjoying his honeymoon in Malaga, on Spain’s south coast. The man was set upon by a group of 15-year-olds who reportedly shouted “chino” (“Chinese” in Spanish) as they hit him. The man, a student at Johns Hopkins University, lost a tooth in the attack, as well as suffering cranial bruising, a swollen lip and bruising to his left

thigh. The attack took place on June 3rd when the victim was on his way to La Malagueta beach, police sources told Europa Press. His new wife was unhurt in the attack and alerted local police as well as emergency services, who took her husband to Malaga’s regional hospital. One of the group of attackers was found by police after they tracked him down via his Instagram account, police sources confirmed. thelocal

Melody Makers International

The Costa’s leading popular choral group, Melody Makers International, will be presenting the latest in their increasingly successful series of shows on Saturday 25th June in the exotic surroundings of the Orihuela Costa Resort Hotel at La Zenia. The two shows, at 2pm and 8pm, are entitled ‘A Century of Popular Songs’ and will include smash hit songs from every decade from the 1920s until the present day. This will provide the widest possible variety of songs from the best and most successful choir on the coast, along with some of the finest soloists in the Costa region. These include the singing sensation Verity Hall, the ever-popular and experienced young singer Rebecca Holt, and concert favourites Mary Beer and Graham Cooke. Starting with a fabulous medley of 1920s favourites, the show moves through the decades and will include a Wartime selection (1940s), the fabulous music of the 60s and 70s and of course, Abba. The second half of the concert will concentrate on the remaining decades of the century, bringing us up to the present day with the music of Beyonce, Adele, Barbra Streisand

and Celine Dion. There is something for everyone in this packed variety show, including the eagerly-awaited comedy duets for which these shows are renowned, all accompanied by a professional band from the UK and conducted by local maestro Nigel Hopkins. For the second time this year Melody Makers are supporting the children’s charity The Butterfly Children Charity (DEBRA), for children who suffer from a genetic and incurable condition Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) that result in extreme fragility of the skin. Blisters and open wounds form as a result of the lightest touch of their skin. The Melody Makers concert in January raised €3,000 for the charity, and choir director Nigel Hopkins is keen to match that magnificent figure with this concert. Tickets for the shows - priced again at €10 (afternoon) and 12€ (evening) are available from La Ponderosa Gift Shop at La Zenia, as well as The Card Place at both Punta Prima and Benimar. Tickets can also be obtained from The Butterfly Children Charity (DEBRA) shops in Pueblo Bravo & Urb La Marina, San Fulgencio

colds and treat the flu. This erroneous view is all the more dangerous given that the inappropriate use of this kind of medication only serves to strengthen its real enemy: bacteria, which are becoming increasingly resistant. An EU report on antimicrobial resistance released this week reveals widespread ignorance about the real purpose of antibiotics in Spain, which scored worse than average. “The rise of resistant microbes is a threat to global public health. It is responsible for the avoidable deaths of humans and animals, increased healthcare and veterinary costs, and productivity losses,” reads the report. Last month, a US woman suffered an infection by “superbacteria” that proved immune to the strongest available antibiotics According to this Eurobarometer survey, 48% of Spaniards said that antibiotics kill viruses, while 37% knew that they don’t, compared with 43% overall in the EU. A further 45% believe they are effective against colds and flus (against 48% who say this is wrong). In the EU overall, 36% of respondents said antibiotics were good against the flu. Yet a vast majority of Spaniards, 85%, said they are aware that an inappropriate use of antibiotics makes them less effective, in line with the EU average of 84%. The confusion may be partly attributable to the fact that only 23% of Spaniards said they had received

3

information about these prescription drugs over the last year, compared with the European average of 33%. Those who did receive information mostly did so from their doctor (48%), significantly above the average of 32% for Europe, where people are exposed to public awareness campaigns. Spain has a strategic plan to increase outreach. Meanwhile, a report by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control finds that Spain is increasingly vulnerable to antibiotic-resistant bacteria. From bad to worse And things could get worse, judging by the fact that 47% of Spaniards used antibiotics over the course of last year, according to the Eurobarometer. This puts Spain second to Malta (48%) and far above the EU average of (34%). The survey also shows that between 2013 and 2016, this rate grew nine percentage points, even as it declined by five points in neighboring France and Portugal, and by one point overall across the EU. The effects of super-resistant bacteria are already being felt. Last month, a US woman suffered an infection by “superbacteria” that proved immune to the strongest available antibiotics. It was a sign of things to come, warned the experts. Health authorities are asking for a more rational use of antibiotics, not just in humans but also in animals raised for human consumption. elpais

he festival of San Juan, celebrated on June 23, takes place on the shortest night of the year that also welcomes the start of the summer season – the summer solstice.

San Juan dates back to pre-Christian times and to many people, it is said to be centred around paranormal events that occur because the ancient pagan gods make themselves visible to humans. The magical night of San Juan is all about changes. It is about night and day; fire and water. Fire purifies and water recuperates, refreshes, and rejuvenates. Celebrated all over Spain, but especially in coastal regions where many people head for the beaches. San Juan is full of luck, music and magical rituals. Bonfires are the theme of the night, and according to tradition, if people jump over a bonfire three times at midnight, they will be cleansed and

June 2016

purified, and their problems burned away. Other legends after midnight include, burning a piece of paper with your lovers name on it, washing your hands and feet in the sea three times in order to be granted three wishes and for a happy twelve months thereafter. Bathing at this time is also said to be beneficial for skin complaints and washes the body of evil spirits. Depending where you experience San Juan, you will find yourself entranced by the scene. In some places, hundreds upon hundreds of fires dot the coastline. So make sure that you reserve the night of June 23rd. Bring plenty to eat and drink and make sure to take a jacket if your going to be near water , and be prepared to see the sun rise on the morning of the 24th. Many people jump over bonfires so their problems will burn away, and after midnight if you take a dip in the sea the water purifies your soul and body. We all wish you a fantastic San Juan Festival, but please stay safe!

Starting a business in Spain is extremely easy and typically should not take more than a month. Buying Spanish property and doing business in Spain form a recipe for success, as thousands of foreigners have already discovered. With more and more people of working age coming to Spain, there has been a marked increase in the number of applications to operate a business in Spain. Statistics show that the country has been recognized by British nationals as the ideal destination for relocation and running a business. Spain, which boasts nearly 1.5 million commercial premises, is a paradise for small companies and sole traders. Doing business in Spain is a lucrative proposition not only because of the ease with which one can set up and run a business, but also because of the relatively low labour costs compared to the UK. The huge number of tourists and foreign residents is a major contributing factor to the desire to set up both tourist related and service businesses in Spain. There are an estimated 2.8 million permanent foreign residents in Spain.

Only last year, some 47,000 Britons became Spanish residents bringing the total registered British residents to 274,000. According to an estimate published in The Guardian recently, almost 750,000 Britons spend most or part of the year living in Spain. Over 650,000 British citizens have already settled permanently and 16 million British tourists visit Spain every year. All you need to set up a business in Spain is the NIE (Numero de Identidad de Extranjero), which is a mandatory identification number for anyone setting up a commercial operation in the country. This number can be obtained from the Oficina de Extranjeros at the local police station or police headquarters.

The process is relatively simple and the NIE can be obtained within a month. Once you have the NIE, you can buy property, open a bank account, apply for a business permit and pay taxes. There are several lucrative sectors for doing business in Spain. The tourism and hospitality industry throughout coastal Spain, especially in Costa Blanca, Costa Almeria and Costa Calida, is witnessing a boom like never before. The number of tourists visiting Spain each year has crossed the 50 million mark and is still growing. There are around 300,000 holiday homes owned by non-residents, of which British nationals alone are reported to own over 45,000. New residents are successfully doing business in Spain running schools, shops, medical practices, estate agencies, bars and restaurants, in fact the opportunities are only limited to your imagination and hard work.An example of an emerging sector is the ‘photovoltaic’ manufacturing industry. This is a way of generating solar energy for large-scale commercial applications as well as for the residential sector. Though in the early stages, All your Favourite Foods from this market has great potential and offers enterprising businessmen the chance to set up a business in Spain Home and capitalize on this new emerging market sector. Apart from the ease of running a business, another advantage is the availability of excellent residential and commercial properties at great prices. Spain is the second home for many Europeans because the cost of property is significantly lower than countries like France, Germany and even parts of Italy. The Costa Blanca, Costa Calida and Costa Almeria are among the biggest Spanish property hotspots, owing to their great tourist appeal.Significant infrastructure development is underway in these regions to cater to the tourist influx and the consequent demand for Spanish property. Therefore, if you are not sure as to what kind of business in Spain you want to start, buying a commercial Spanish property as an investment may be a good option for you.

Woodworm in Spanish

One down side of a warm climate is the increase in insects. Even treated areas of timberwork e.g. windows and doors, may still show signs of attack. Some beetles and termites are so ferocious that they may make headway into the wood surface before being deterred by preservative treatments. It is important that the type of insect and extent of attack is correctly diagnosed in order that the correct measures can be taken when protecting and eradicating wood boring insects from a building structure.

This article is focused on ‘Wood worm’ or ‘carcoma’, which typically is ‘common furniture beetle’ (Anobium punctatum) but can be confused with Ambrosia beetle, Waney edge borer and Weevil. Wood worm, will typically have groups of small holes ( 1-2mm in diameter). These are not entry holes, but actually flight holes i.e. the point at which the worm turns to beetle, and leaves the wood surface. The larvae have normally entered via a surface irregularity or the rear untreated surface of the timber, e.g. where a door architrave joins the wall . Therefore when you see evidence of wood worm i.e. the holes, some beetles have already left, and have no doubt set about infesting other timbers within the property. The internal damage has already been done via a network of little tunnels, which over time weaken the timber to the point of structural failure (each larvae or ‘worm’ spends up to 3 years eating away the timber!).

Evidence Other signs to look for (in addition to flight holes), which will help to show if the infestation is live, are: - wood dust on surfaces below the holes, or wood dust on cobwebs below holes, the beetles themselves (small brown about 2mm long). As they have flown they are rarely found near the infestation, but more likely to be seen on a white wall in other parts of the house especially during the warmer months. If you are a light sleeper, the beetle can also be heard tapping (actually a mating call) they don’t just do it at night, it’s just that lying in bed at night is the easiest way to notice their ‘activity’.

DIY Treatment

All wood that shows signs of attack should be surface brush treated and bore holes injected with preservative via a spray nozzle e.g. ‘Xylazel Carcoma’ . Spray will normally exit from other holes which is a good sign that treatment has penetrated, but it’s a good idea to where protective goggles and a mask*, as treatment of one hole can result in others spraying back at you! Once dry, holes can be filled with wood filler before surface finish, e.g. varnish (use a water based Acrylic varnish for easy application and low odour). Ideally all unexposed surfaces should also be accessed and treated. Use ‘Corpol Matacarcoma’ for larger brush applications and apply plenty of product (you want it so soak in as much as possible). As with all buildings defects, it’s important to ascertain the severity of the problem:Treatable superficial infestation would involve cosmetic superficial damage to door architraves, door / window frames and few signs of outer surface attack to some structural timbers e.g. floor joists. Treatable structural infestation would normally be evident in wide spread, door / window infestation plus signs of attack to structural timbers, where less than a quarter of the beam or post is affected, and beam support ends are sound. Untreatable serious infestation occurs where beam ends are in stages of advanced attack and normally a quarter or more of the beam cross section area is affected. Tests, can help assess the depth of infestation. Older beams are often hacked back to sound, hard timber and treated, but structural loading capacity can be seriously affected* and the safest (but most costly) solution is replacement of the beam, while occasionally secondary support solutions are possible. In the UK where relatively light floor boards are used over joists, the required loading capacity is less, but in Spain the typical ‘Boveda’ vaulted ceilings are very heavy, and have often had heavy floor

screeds applied over at later dates + older thicker tiles. Loading capacity of beams and good beam support is therefore very important, which is why many old town houses are demolished by the Spanish as they present a genuine danger. Failure to assess the condition of structural timbers is the biggest mistake made by many buyers of older town houses. Assessment of the severity of infestation, preferably prior to purchase, can literally save thousands for the buyer.

Faking Holes may have been filled and varnished or painted over to hide infestation, also modern beam boxing (designed to give a timber look to concrete beams) can be used over seriously infested timber beams and rafters! If buying, don’t take anyone’s word for it (agent or owner) that timbers have been replaced or fully treated, without seeking independent advice or cross checking any guarantees. Many properties are ‘renovated’ without carrying out essential structural timber replacement works (in an effort to turn a good profit) and buying a faked up house is like buying a filled and re-sprayed rusty old car. Unless the work has been done properly the property will rapidly deteriorate and can in many cases be dangerous for occupants. http://www.tumbit.com

window tinting benefits

There are many benefits of window tinting. In hot weather, it cuts down heat, which can reduce air conditioning expenses. In cold weather, it reflects interior heat back into the house, reducing heating costs. Along with heat reduction, window film can also help protect your curtains and furniture from the effects of the sun. To protect home furnishings, a window film will block almost 99 percent of the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Some window films offer another benefit such as shatter resistance. The film holds glass shards together and act as a barrier between the interior of the home and the glass. Window films can also help to reduce the glare on your television. The percentage of glare reduction is usually related to the visible light transmittance. The lower the amount of light transmitted through the film, the greater the glare reduction inside the home.

Lighting your outdoor multigame court means the fun never has to stop. At least, not until you collapse. A combination of low-voltage lights and antiglare shields can direct the light just where you need it to get your game on — and keep the light from bugging your neighbors. http://www.neavegroup.com Does your deck or patio include a pergola? It can work hard for you right into the evening. The pillars and crossbeams of your pergola provide a great platform for a variety of lighting options, from subtle recessed lighting that illuminates your dining table to festive strings of bistro lights that add a fun party atmosphere. Everybody loves the magical quality of moonlight on a summer night. But the moon doesn’t always cooperate. Enter the next best thing: moonlighting. Mounting lights in the trees overhead or from the gable of a roof creates a beautiful moonlight effect on your deck or patio, as light dapples through the trees. It would be a shame to head inside. Landscape Lighting Highlights Your Summer Garden You’ve put a lot of thought, effort, and expense into your property’s trees, shrubs, garden beds and specimen plantings. Why let them hide in the dark? Evening can be a magical time in the garden — as long as you don’t trip and land face first in the hydrangea bush. There are lots of lighting options here. Some fixtures cast light on garden paths while others nestle in the garden bed, highlighting your most striking plants. Cast some light on your pretty fountain, gurgling waterfall, statuary or grapevine-covered arbor. Uplighting provided by spotlights accentuates the texture of tree trunks, creating interesting evening artwork. Lit well, your garden becomes a magical spot after dark. A history of Moorish Spain (VII) With the fall of Seville in 913; Abdar ar Rahman III was on his way to reuniting Al Andalus. In May 914 he and his army left Cordoba and marched south. With the aim of routing the rebel Ibn Hafsun; they soon arrived at Balda on the northern tip of now what is Malaga Province in Antequera. Using a scorched earth policy the Cavalry destroyed everything around the castle and did the same to half a dozen others before arriving at Malaga itself. Then Rahman III headed west along the Costa del Sol; retaking castles in modern day Fuengirola, Benahavis and inland of Marbella at Ojen. Incidentally Ojen’s name derives from the ancient Arabic word Hoxan meaning bitter. It seems the lead, nickel and iron once found in the surrounding hills made this an important mining town. Indeed in the 19th Century Ojen became central to the Spanish Industrial Revolution. Within 2 months of leaving Cordoba; Rahman III had destroyed and reclaimed seventy of forts and towns through Malaga/Cadiz. On reaching the port of Algeciras in June 914; Ibn Hafsun’s forces surrendered without a fight. Rahman III sent his naval patrols up and down the coast to destroy any vessels suspected of supplying Ibn Hafsun from the short hop across the Mediterranean; Morocco. There the Fatimid’s ruled North Africa including parts of modern day Egypt, Iraq and Sudan. Being allies of Ibn Hafsun, Rahman III expelled the lot of them from Al Andalus. He then persuaded the Maghrwaw tribe to switch allegiance from the

pause for thought Some years ago, I was running a Youth Group in our village near Preston, when one of the lads stated he could never be a Christian because of all the hypocrisy he saw amongst so-called Christians, who look really holy as they go to Church on Sundays, but live with no thought for God or anyone else the rest of the week. Trying to be understanding I asked ‘If you saw me driving a Rolls Royce through the village, apparently out of my mind and crashing into other cars, would that cause you to conclude that a Rolls Royce was a lousy car?’ His response of ‘Course not, I’d just say Burr chops is a lousy driver’ drew a good laugh from the rest of the group, but helped make the point that he shouldn’t judge Jesus Christ solely by the way His followers behaved. Yes, it would be nice to think that others seeing my life, would be attracted to my faith, but I’m well aware that’s most unlikely to happen as I, in common with many other Christians, am very human and have more than my fair share of faults. I’d certainly never buy any car (and no, I’ve never owned a Roller)

merely because of seeing how someone else drove it; I’d always want to read the spec in detail and then test it out myself. And in the same way I suggested to my young friend, the only way to appreciate the Christian Faith is to read the spec, as in the Bible, and then try it yourself. To my total amazement, this particular, highly sceptical young man did just that. Refusing the offer to borrow one of mine for fear it might in some way make him indebted to me, he bought and read his own bible and discovered that he, like so many, had thought he knew what the Bible had to say, but when for the first time he actually read it, had to acknowledge that he’d entirely misjudged its message.

Brexit would be 'negative for Spain', say economists: exports to UK could cost up to 10% more

ECONOMY experts have warned that a 'Brexit' could have negative consequences for Spain, given that the UK is its third-largest trading partner after France and Germany, and Spanish exports to Britain totalled nearly €5 billion in the first quarter of this year. Although they urge traders 'not to panic' and to 'put things into perspective', key speakers say 'extra hurdles' could be faced for industries which export to the UK, mainly food, transport and manufactured goods. In theory, commercial relations between the two countries may not need to be hugely different after a Brexit, according to two experts – Professor Santiago Carbó of Bangor University in Wales, who is also head of Financial Studies at the Savings Bank Foundation in Spain (FUNCAS), and Agusti Ulied, economics tutor at ESADE business school. But customs tariffs and paperwork could cause headaches and increase prices, they both say. The two professors comment that those British nationals who want to leave the EU, and the 'Leave' campaign itself, are basing their decision 'more on trying to avoid free movement of people than of goods' – or in a bid to prevent immigration from Europe rather than trade. Companies in the manufacturing and industrial sectors will be the worst-hit,

says Diego Zuluaga of the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), since crossborder tariffs for exporting to Britain could increase their prices but as much as 10%. Zuluaga believes 'uncertainty' will reign, and will negatively affect trade, until such time as the UK and the EU have agreed on new trading terms – this, according to previous experience, may take up to 10 years, although the UK's deadline once it decides to leave the EU is just two years, according to the Lisbon Treaty. According to economist José Carlos Díez, one of the greatest problems faced by Spain in the event of a Brexit is 'financial contagion', given that Spain has the second-highest trade deficit in the world, after the USA. “If market tensions increase, this could have a negative impact on employment and GDP – the European Central Bank (BCE) buying national debt is just a firewall, and if the fire is too intense, we'll have problems,” Díez warns. “In the short term, the market may become very unsettled and nervous.” He does not believe Spanish financial entities, such as the Santander bank, in the UK will have too many problems, in the same way that US banks in Spain operate freely – although Spanish firms in Britain have already voiced grave concerns over their future in the

country in the event of a Brexit. Spain is also worried about the fact that 25% of its tourists come from the UK – in theory, a Brexit should not make a difference, but if the prices of holidays in the EU increase for British residents and their numbers declined as a result, Spain would feel the pinch. “Another aspect which could affect the Spanish economy – although not in a particularly fundamental manner – is that British residents in Spain would not have so much money to spend if the Sterling falls by between 10% and 20%, as is very likely,” Ulied continues. A census from 2015 showed 283,243 British nationals in Spain, but this does not include the still-numerous expats who continue to avoid – illegally – signing on the padrón, or census, nor those who spend several months of the year in Spain but not enough to count as a tax resident. “Uncertainty in terms of taxes, finance and eligibility to use public services will also affect the 102,498 Spaniards currently living in the UK,” Ulied continues. Their numbers rose by 12% in 2015 – one of the greatest increases seen in destination countreis

of emigrating Spaniards. Spaniards want Britain to stay A recent poll showed that 80% of Spaniards do not want the UK to leave the EU and, if they were able to vote in the referendum, it would be against a Brexit. A total of 79% believe a Brexit would have negative consequences for Spain, with 74% believing these consequences could be dire – and only 6% say they believe Spain would actually benefit from a Brexit. Nearly two-thirds firmly believe that when it comes to the crunch, Britain will vote to remain in the EU when it goes to the polls on Thursday. A referendum on EU membership looks very unlikely in Spain, since 78% believe being in the Union has been beneficial and only 14% think it has been bad for the country – in fact, 57% believe being an EU member has actually helped Spain deal with its recent financial crisis. Nearly a half – 48% - believe Spain has become more pro-Europe since it joined the EU and that Spanish society in general feels more 'European', whilst around a third, or 34%, believe the exact opposite. All Spain's main political parties vying for election this month are keen for Britain to stay in the EU, and all of them are in favour of Spain's own membership continuing. thinkspain

LOOKING TO BUY OR RENT? FIND YOUR DREAM LOCATION INSIDE! Home Sales Registered Best First Quarter Since 2010

According to the latest data published by the Ministry of Public Works, from April 2015 to March 2016 a total of 419,396 homes were sold in Spain, which represents an increase of 13.4% compared to the previous 12 months. Moreover, the statistics on home sales transactions made before a notary show that 103,288 homes were sold in the first quarter of 2016, representing an increase of 20.7% over the first quarter of 2015, and the best first quarter since 2010, when a total of 107,079 home sales transactions were registered. Comparing the first quarter of 2016 with the same period in 2015, all of Spain’s regions recorded increases in home sales, except for Navarra, which registered a decline of 11.8%. Highlighted among the regions with the greatest increases were: Murcia (43.5%); La Rioja (43.3%); Asturias (36.1%); Catalonia (28.2%) and the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla (27.4%). The cities which registered the highest numbers of home sales in the first quarter were: Madrid (8,620);

Barcelona (3,892); Valencia (2,025); Seville (1,590); Torrevieja (1,416); Málaga (1,314); Zaragoza (1,149) and Alicante (1,059). Looking at the accumulated figures of the past 12 months (April 2015 to March 2016 compared with April 2014 to March 2015), all regions recorded positive data, except for Navarra, which registered a decline of 0.8%. The regions to register the best data for the period were: Murcia, with a year-onyear increase of 27.0%; La Rioja (21.9%); the Balearic Islands (18.6%); Cantabria (18.5%); the Basque Country (17.0%) and Asturias (16.1%). Understanding EPC housing regulations in Spain

propert y services

The Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) is mandatory for Spanish properties that are for sale or rent from the 1 June 2013. Here’s a guide to what your property requires. The purpose of the EPC, also known in Spain as the Certificado de Eficiencia Energetica (CEE), is to ensure that homes are able to run more efficiently and in turn reduce carbon dioxide emissions. This stems from the Kyoto Agreement, which is a worldwide treaty in which the participating countries will do their best to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Each property will be tested and scored on a scale ranging from A to G, with ‘A’ being extremely efficient and ‘G’ being particularly inefficient. The outcome of the test will not require the owner to change anything (although it is encouraged) within the property. However, if changes should be made they will often allow the owner to save money in the long term. Effects of EPC on buying a property in Spain “Apart from the additional cost for the seller to obtain the EPC, as most properties in Spain built pre-2000 do not have insulation in them, most properties will therefore not have a favourable energy efficiency result and buyers will obviously use this to their advantage. So the seller will be disadvantaged at his own cost! On the other hand, if the seller has insulated their home and put in double glazing, apart from the additional cost

for the certificate, the EPC should help them make the sale as their property will be less expensive to run and thus obtain a good energy efficiency rating.” EPC regulations for rental properties in Spain The EPC will affect renters as well as buyers, including short-term holiday lets as well. This is difficult to regulate, but if there is a let exceeding four months, proof of the EPC will be necessary. If you’re already leasing a property then you do not need an EPC certificate, although you will do if you lease to a new tenant. If you fail to provide the tenant with the information from the EPC, then your contract can become void, the government can fine you and the tenant could claim compensation from you. If you’re renting the property you or your estate agent will have to make sure that you have an EPC. EPC requirements for selling your property in Spain If you are planning on selling your property you will need to make sure you have obtained an EPC before it is advertised, and if you have a property already on the market you will have a week after the 1 June 2013 to prove that you have applied for an EPC. Once it has been applied for, you will have an additional three weeks to acquire it. EPCs are essential when selling a property and estate agents must ensure that the EPC score of your property is included in the property details. Similar to renting, failing to own an EPC can result in an already agreed Prompt and reliable service, sale becoming void, with no job too small. potential for the buyer to Full bathrooms or just makeovers claim compensation. Spain Will Need 140,000 New Homes Per Year Until 2025, Says IESE A recent study on the estimation of needs and housing prices in Spain, carried out by IESE Business School’s Professor of Financial Management, José Luis Suárez, estimates that 140,000 new homes will need to be constructed in Spain each year up until 2025, when the price of housing will return to 2007 levels. Suárez estimates that the Spanish real estate market will need an average of 100,000 new homes annually until 2020, and that from 2020 to 2025, the demand will stabilise at around 140,000 homes per year. Between 1991 to 1997 the construction of new housing in Spain averaged at around 250,000 dwellings annually; between 1998 to 2007, an average of 580,000 new homes were

built in Spain each year; and from 2007 until 2014 the construction of new housing in Spain fell to around 75,000 homes annually. Also, the study estimates that the price of new housing in Spain will return to 2007 levels by 2025, 18 years since the onset of the crisis, with the price of housing in Spain reaching 2,046 euros per square metre in 2025, rising to 2,212 euros per square metre in 2027. The year-on-year variation in housing prices reached 19% in 2003, and its lowest point was registered in 2012 with a decline of 10%. The highest prices were recorded in 2007, with 2,062 euros per square metre, while in contrast that price fell to just 1,400 euros per square metre in 2014. kyero.com

Spain House Prices Register Biggest Rise Since 2007

House prices in Spain increased by 6.3% in the first quarter of 2016, year-on-year, representing their biggest rise since the third quarter of 2007, when prices increased by 9.2%, according to the latest House Price Index data published by the National Statistics Institute. This latest increase, which is over two points higher than the increase registered in the fourth quarter of 2015 (4.2%), is the eighth consecutive quarter in which housing prices have registered positive annual rates. By type of dwelling, the price of new housing rose by 6.1% compared with the first quarter of 2015 – its biggest increase since the first quarter of 2008 – while the price of second hand housing increased by 6.4%, registering its most significant growth since the third quarter of 2007. Q u a r t e r- o n - q u a r t e r (first quarter of 2016 over fourth quarter of 2015), house prices

increased by 1.5%, thus returning to positive rates after registering a decline of 0.1% in the fourth quarter of last year. Between January and March, new housing prices increased by 2.6% q u a r t e r- o n - q u a r t e r, which is 1.3% more than in the previous quarter, while the price of second hand housing experienced a quarteron-quarter rise of 1.3%, in contrast to the 0.3% decline registered in the previous quarter. El Mundo reported that all of Spain’s regions registered positive year-on-year rates in the price of housing during the first quarter. The greatest increases registered in the first quarter, over the same period of 2015, were those for Madrid (9.7%) and the Balearic Islands (8.8%), while the smallest increases were registered in Castilla-La Mancha (1.5%), Castilla y León (1.7%) and Extremadura (1.7%). kyero.com

Home Sales Climbed by 29% in April

According to the latest Transfer of Property Rights data published by the National Statistics Institute, home sales in Spain increased by 29% in April over the same month in 2015, reaching a total of 35,199 transactions, which is a figure not seen since February 2013, and also represents the largest rise since August 2010. At the same time, the Institute’s data showed that house prices soared by 6.3% in the first quarter, its biggest increase since 2007. With this increase, the sale of homes in Spain accumulated three consecutive months of year-on-year increases, following the increases registered in February and in March, of 15.8% and 16.8%, respectively. The favourable data for April was mainly due to the performance of the second hand market and, to a lesser extent, to sales of new homes. Specifically, the number of transactions carried out on second hand homes increased by 32.3% year-on-year, to a total of 28,028 transactions, while sales of new homes increased by 17.6% year-on-year, and reached a total of 7,171 transactions. Some 89.5% of the home sales in the fourth month of the year were free housing and 10.5% were subsidised housing. Free housing sales rose by 30% in April year-onyear, to 31,505 transactions, while subsidised housing transactions increased by 21%, to 3,694 transactions. From January to April, home sales accumulated an increase of 13.8% over the same period of 2015, thanks exclusively to the 20.6% increase in transactions on second hand homes, since the number of transactions on new homes fell by 6.6%.

El Economista reported that, in April, the greatest numbers of home sales per 100,000 inhabitants were registered in Valencia (138), the Balearic Islands (129) and Madrid (103). AndalucĂa was the region to register most housing transactions in April, with a total of 6,715 transactions, followed by Catalonia (5,465), Valencia (5,423) and Madrid (5,204). In contrast, the regions to register the fewest housing transactions in April were La Rioja (250),

BARGAINS GANGAS

Cantabria (371) and Navarra (467). In relative terms, home sales rose in all regions, led by the Balearic Islands (+61.7%), Galicia (+51.6%) and Valencia (+46.6%), while the lowest increases registered were those for the Canary Islands (+2%) and the Basque Country (+12%). Month-on-month (April over March), home sales increased by 10.3%, representing its biggest rise in five years. kyero.com

The Bankthus of devaluing Alqueria the loan

Alqueria’s currency, as all avid readers will remember is the ‘Raro’. It is not linked to the gold standard nor is there a buoyant stock market. This is reflected in the exchange rate which at the time of writing stands at 35,376,298.76 Raros to the Euro. The currency is simply waste paper and only used by the Bank of Alqueria in its foreign dealings, Remitroot in its various forms is the coinage of choice within the Pueblo. Alqueria’s state bank has extremely interesting fiscal policies many of which are subject to investigation making them ‘sub judice’. It is the only international financial institution which can make in e f f i c i e n c y, ineptitude and total inertia actually pay, making the Bank the only profitable establishment in Alqueria. The head of the Bank is one ‘Briefcase Carlos’ who is ably assisted by ‘Blackmask Alberto’ both giants in the fields of drunkenness and womanising but totally out of their depths regarding economics. They are obviously well qualified when compared to their international counterparts. The Bank’s offices are in the Calle Horno an ideal place for book cooking, a discipline that Carlos and Alberto excel. The illustrious pair, due to a typing error once gave a loan, the equivalent of over 2,000,00.00 Euros to a stray dog. The remedy was simple, print more money to significantly increase inflation

to the tune of 25 cents. A new arrival in Alqueria foolishly thought the currency was negotiable and had his savings paid into the bank, it was never seen again but Briefcase Carlos and Blackmask Alberto spent two drunken weeks on the Costa del Sol. Loco Paco once drew his forty Euro Stupidity Disability Allowance, known affectionately as the ‘Maracas de Machín Fondo’, in Raros. This amounted to over 100,000,000 Raros which gave Paco a hernia while transporting it, this increased his disability to fortyfive Euros. Alberto and Carlos were naturally upset at this extra financial burden and subsequently paid Paco in Neotropic C o r m o r a n t droppings, Paco seemed quite happy though. Alberto and Carlos did try their hand at the well practised art of corruption but being inept and not having the slightest clue when it came to finance legal or otherwise ended up out-of-pocket and the Bank actually went into profit. Blackmask Alberto had to repossess his own home while Briefcase Carlos arranged a ‘bridging loan’ for himself but as he considered himself a bad risk charged an excessively high rate of interest and went bankrupt. The Bank of Alqueria is an institution which reflects the very essence of the Pueblo and its people, badly run, fulfilling no useful function whatsoever and fundamentally anarchistic.

LEGAL CORNER WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR

If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com - www.daviessolicitors.com RENOUNCING AN INHERITANCE IN FAVOUR OF ANOTHER PERSON CAN BE A VERY EXPENSIVE MISTAKE QUESTION: My brother and I recently inherited a villa in Mojacar worth 400,000€. I agreed with my brother that he keeps the property and I would compensate him. We discussed this with our solicitor and with this as the background agreement, we assisted the notary and we both signed a deed in which I renounced in his favour and he accepted the inheritance of the house, half directly and half due to me renouncing my half in his favour. The solicitor is now saying that the tax office is claiming that, in respect of my half, two taxable transactions have taken place: 1. Inheritance tax on the half to me and 2. a taxable donation to my brother. Is this correct?

ANSWER: I am afraid you have made a very expensive mistake. What the tax office is claiming is correct. In Spain if you renounce and establish the new beneficiaries on the deed then the tax office taxes the transaction twice (inheritance+donation).

The best solution, depending on the way the will was worded, would have been:

Option 1. If the will states that everything goes to the two of you with the right to accrue the other, then you could have signed a full unconditional renunciation to your father’s estate (which is not taxable as long as it is unconditional). In this case the next in line according to the will would have been your brother (without you having to name him, which makes it a donation) who would inherit the complete property directly from your father. Option 2 . If the will stated that you are both the heirs and then as a second step the grandchildren, then solution A. would not work. In this case you should have both inherited as stated on the will and then you could have signed a deed to resolve the joint ownership, which is much cheaper than a donation. The only angle to your situation now would be to speak to the tax office to see if there is any way you can sign a deed of modification at the notary, claiming that you made a mistake.

The Idiot With the Pepper

We had to face the Perfect Storm of Shopping – a boiling hot Saturday in Mercadona. Arriving in the car park it was obvious that most of the customers were suffering from Directional Blindness, causing them to lose all comprehension of traffic flow, becoming oblivious to the direction arrows on the car park asphalt, and losing all ability to park within the designated car parking spaces. Descending to shop level it was painful to see the poor sufferers with vacant expressions on their faces, wandering in random directions with their trolleys – a symptom of Directional Blindness is that those afflicted lose all awareness of the world around them, causing them to meander aimlessly up and down the aisles, occasionally parking their trolleys sideways on while they stare blankly at the goods on offer. We have a tried and tested shopping strategy – Pete pushes the trolley while I gofer. This works well as I can generally nip in and out between the pondering masses with the speed and agility of a sheepdog through a herd of cows. Fruit and Veg, always a hub of ponderance, requires a different approach – Pete chooses and bags, I weigh. I stand in the queue for the weighing machine, several bags in hand, repeating to myself ’94, 38, 46, hut-hut- hut,’ (Maybe not the hut-hut-hut part) and hoping that I can remember which item was 94, which was 38 and which was 46 – or was it 56? I had amassed a hefty total of bags by the time I reached the front. I weighed and stuck labels,

25

By Jos Biggs

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk and returned to the trolley with my booty, and soon we were at the tail of the human snake that was the till queue. The time and motion perfection that is the Biggs Shopping Tactic swung into motion. Pete unloaded, Maria Carmen swiped, and I packed. Fine, until Maria Carmen held up a pepper. ‘You have not weighed it.’ I looked at the queue behind us, stretching way back into the distance, and my heart sank. I grabbed the pepper and galloped back to Fruit and Veg, slammed it on the scales and sped back, expecting to be greeted by a lynch mob of detained shoppers, all wanting to know which idiot had forgotten to weigh their pepper. But no, Maria Carmen had somehow sidetracked our shopping, and had continued her task with the next customer. What’s more, she did it with a smile!

Tenet got the idea for the unique steampunk-inspired prosthesis after seeing the work of Jean Louis Gonzales, a.k.a. Gonzal, an artist and engineer known for his mechanised taxidermies and skulls. After meeting Gonzal at various

tattoo conventions, Tenet asked him if he could somehow mechanise an old prosthesis he had lying around the house, and the two started working on a prototype. http://www.odditycentral.com/

• 4 large plum tomatoes • ½ baguette (approximately 5 ounces) • ½ small yellow onion • 1 clove garlic, crushed • 1 ½ tablespoons kosher salt • ½ cup olive oil • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar • 1 tablespoon tomato paste • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste • 2 hard-boiled eggs, crumbled • 6 slices prosciutto, torn in pieces

garlic and salt to the bowl. Stir and cover with boiling water; about 3½ cups should be enough. Leave to soak for an hour, just on the counter. Prepare a colander with a bowl placed under it to save some of the liquid. Drain the tomatoes and bread. Get a blender ready — transfer the tomatoes and onion to the blender. Squeeze the water from the bread. Add the bread to the blender, as well as ½ cup of the soaking liquid, olive oil, red wine vinegar, and tomato paste. Blend it until smooth and transfer to the big bowl you used for soaking. Add black pepper to taste and some salt, if needed. Place in the fridge until serving so it can cool off. Serve with the crumbled eggs and prosciutto, and drizzle with some extra olive oil.

Make the brava sauce – Purée tomatoes, 1 tablespoon oil, wine, paprika, sugar, and chile in a blender. Season with salt, transfer to a bowl, and set aside. Make the allioli – Vigorously whisk egg yolk and garlic. While whisking, add 1 tablespoon oil in a thin stream until mixture thickens. Continue whisking, adding 7 tablespoons oil in a thin stream. Add lemon juice and milk, and season with salt; chill. Pour oil into a 5-quart pot to a depth of 1½ inches; heat over medium heat until a deep-fry thermometer reads 220 degrees Fahrenheit. Meanwhile, halve potatoes crosswise. Using a small knife, shape each potato half into a 1¾-by-1-inch football shape. Transfer potatoes to oil and cook, turning occasionally, until tender and pale golden, 15 to 20 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer potatoes to paper towels; chill. Remove pot from heat; reserve. Heat the reserved oil over medium-high heat

• ½ cup crushed tomatoes • 9 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for frying • 1½ teaspoons red wine • 1 teaspoon hot smoked paprika • ¼ teaspoon sugar • 1 serrano chile, minced • Kosher salt, to taste • 1 egg yolk • 1 clove garlic, minced • 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice • 1 teaspoon milk • 4 russet potatoes, peeled until a deep-fry thermometer reads 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Add potatoes; cook until golden brown, 3 to 5 minutes. Transfer to paper towels; season with salt. Serve potatoes with the reserved brava sauce and allioli.

GREAT FUN NIGHT OUT

Bring chicken broth and saffron to a boil in a small saucepan, then turn heat to low and place a lid on top to keep hot. Meanwhile, heat extra-virgin olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat then add chicken, chorizo, and shallots, season with salt and pepper, and then sauté until chorizo and chicken are cooked through, 5 minutes, breaking up chorizo as it cooks. Add garlic, then sauté for 1 minute. Add tomatoes and their juices, paprika, and cayenne pepper, if using, then sauté until tomatoes are softened, 3 minutes. Add rice and hot broth to skillet, then stir to combine and bring to a boil. Place a lid on top, then lower heat and simmer until rice has nearly absorbed all the broth and is just slightly al dente,

• 2½ cups chicken broth • Pinch of Spanish saffron • Drizzle of extra-virgin olive oil • 2 boneless skinless chicken thighs, chopped • 6 ounces chorizo • 1 shallot or ½ onion, • Salt and pepper • 3 cloves garlic, minced • 2 vine-ripened tomatoes, chopped • 2 teaspoons paprika •D ash of cayenne pepper (optional) • 1 cup long-grain white rice • 6 ounces large shrimp, peeled, then deveined and chopped • ½ cup frozen peas

13 to 15 minutes. Stir in shrimp and peas, then place lid back on top and let skillet sit off the heat for 5 minutes. Season with more salt and pepper to taste, then serve.

F O K TAL N W O T E H T More Tips for Dining in Spain if you’d like one specifically.

Try to eat with 4 or more people

You can get free stuff when you eat out in Spain Depending on where you are, you may be given olives, chips, or even tapas for free. Sometimes you will go to a restaurant and be brought a snack of sorts with your drinks. Other times, you can go out for drinks and end up with an entire plate of food for free. When ordering wine with a menú, you could be left with the entire bottle on the table, this is not a mistake, drink of it what you please. When a restaurant intends to charge for something, you usually can find the fee noted somewhere on the menu. On occasion, a charge for bread or service will be added to your bill automatically. At some restaurants, there is a tradition of offering a chupito (shot) after a meal as a digestif. When this is the case, your waiter will just bring one for everybody or they will ask you

One of the best ways to eat in Spain is to go out with a group of people and share ever y thing. Portions that are meant for sharing are called platos or raciónes. It’s best to start by ordering less that you think you will eat. Portion sizes vary, so start with a few dishes you find really interesting and order more if you are still hungry. If you aren’t sharing, you should be aware that dishes are rarely served simultaneously. If you wait for everyone to receive their food before you start eating, yours will probably be cold by the time you actually have any.

Sunshine Dining at Oasis Benijofar The Oasis in Benijófar is open from 9.30am daily for breakfast with an extensive brunch, lunch afternoon tea and tapas menu. The Oasis has a wonderful terrace for you to enjoy the late afternoon sun and take in a tea or coffee with a range of homemade cakes & scones or teacakes & muffins. Or enjoy a cool bucket of beer/litre of wine and an early evening tapas and drinks deal. Their ‘Tapas on the Terrace’ evening menu is now available from 7pm Thursday to Saturday with an exciting range of homemade dishes from around the world and they start from just €1.50 each. If you haven’t been to the Oasis in Benijófar recently why not pop along and experience the difference.

Plaza de la Constitución, Benijófar, 03178. Tel: 865 77 51 71 Find them on Facebook or visit www.oasis-benijofar.es

The meat stands alone

When you just order meat, save for some undressed salad, that’s probably the only thing that you will receive. Look for a listing of guarniciones to see what sides are available to accompany your main or order a ración to share as a side among the table. http://partaste.com

For more information or to book your tickets, call Rosemary on 620 105 179 The Mar Menor is a huge (135 square kilometres) salt-water lagoon, separated from the Mediterranean by the 24 kilometre long La Manga del Mar Menor (The Strip). The average depth of the Mar Menor is four metres and at its maximum it is seven metres which means that the seabed slopes very gradually and you have to get several hundred metres in before the water is of any depth. The Mar Menor’s salinity provides buoyancy so it is, supposedly, one of the safest places to swim in the world. The mineral-rich waters are said to have therapeutic effects and because of this the area has a significant spa tourism industry. The sludge in the salt pans is also credited with beneficial effects on the health, so there are often dozens of mud people wallowing in it at any one time. Playa Paraiso beach on a summer

weekend. The beach at Playa Paraiso is very popular, partly because it has road access right onto the beach. On summer weekends it will be packed with Spanish families, who move most of their house onto the beach. The sea is very shallow, with netted off areas to exclude watersports, fishing and jellyfish. The jellyfish are mainly harmless and much reduced in numbers from previous years, apart from the summer of 2006 when they were back with a vengeance. Playa Honda beach During the week the beach is quiet.

camposol D Gardening and Community Group

Newsletter – June 2016 May 2016, saw one project completed along Calle/ Alcivaras and Avda de los Covachos and a second completed Calle/Alcivaras and Calle/Acebos both situated on D4. The work done by our volunteers was a tough nut to crack because of the heat and the work involved. Both projects had a large amount of membrane laid, followed by 8 tons of gravel placed on each area, had to be spread by hand. The Acebos end was surrounded by builders waste and the team had to dispose of it first. Both areas required hard landscaping by hand to smooth out the trench work and prep the ground for planting. These two projects took five visits by our garden team to complete and we were fortunate that a resident donated a set of garden furniture for the community gardens. Seating from this donation is now placed on both areas and a wishing well was donated by another resident and placed on the corner of Alcivaras, many thanks to them both for their generous donations. Four tons of gravel was also spread by volunteers around the petanque court on Calle/Piteras D30 with a new garden table and bench for the players and visitors. Our road repair team are doing a tremendous job on our roads around our sector, filling in potholes and in some case's removing and reseating the drain covers that are causing problems to cars. The work done by the team have a budget of 500 euros a month this is to cover tarmac, concrete for the road surface and kerb stones to replace broken ones. The Garden and Road Teams will stand down shortly because of the heat, but over the past eight months they have done a magnificent job for our sector. Volunteers will still be out there doing minor work and watering, many thanks to our fundraisers and to you all that made donations towards our sector. If you can spare a little time we still need a bucketeer coordinator. Future Projects, The Palm leafs removal, Street Party in July, D group meeting 4th July We have also donated 400ft of irrigation pipes and attachments to residents along Calle Babinas to help them maintain the gardens they have created. Visit our Facebook page you will see some photos of our two most recent projects. Since January we have completed projects on; C/ Mentas, Ajedreas, De Los Covachos, Robles, Salvias and Piteras. Liam and his brothers and sister were left at APAH's kennel gates when they were only days old. After a lot of hard work hand rearing them, they are now 3 months old and ready to be adopted into loving homes. They should be medium sized dogs, approximately 15 - 20kgs in weight. To arrange to meet the little family, please call

We would like to introduce you to Chiquita (brown chihuahua approx. 8 years old, Capitan (white male chihuahua) approx. 2 years old and Lola (maltese cross), her mother being Chiquita, approx. 20 months old. Ideally we would like them all to go together, but K9 realises this is a lot to ask. All three little dogs were well looked after, and have been used to living indoors but given time would adjust to both types of environments.

holidays can seem like a daunting task as there are so many different rules and restrictions to follow. To help you and your jet-setting animal companions, here are some of the most important

630 422 563 or 616 210 850

things you need to know about taking them on holidays with you. Border control EU pet passport rules apply throughout the European Union and it is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct documentation for your pet. The ISPCA stresses the importance of ensuring your pet is wearing a collar, an ID tag and is micro-chipped also giving the temporary address in the event he/she gets lost so they you can be reunited as quickly as possible. Animals will have to be vaccinated against rabies and specific tapeworm treatment for dogs is often required. With regard to quarantine, countries are split into three different catagories with rules for travel to

and from the various catagories. This website has a great breakdown of which countries require an animal be quarantined and which ones don’t so make sure you check that out before booking your trip. Air travel Airlines all have different rules on pet travel so you should always check this on their website before booking flights. Ryanair, for example, does not carry animals on flights except for guide dogs and even then, only on certain routes. If your pets have a fear of flying, you can always travel by boat and this may be a more comfortable and less stressful way for your pet to travel as they can be kept in the car or in on-board kennels on ferries. http://www.thejournal.ie

Alfa Romeo’s new BMW 5 Series rival revealed

Alfa Romeo Giulia’s bigger brother set to go on sale by 2018 and will take on the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes E-Class Alfa Romeo is planning a new executive saloon to rival the BMW 5 Series, Auto Express can reveal – and our exclusive images show how it’s likely to look. The new model will feature a range of powertrains, including a plugin hybrid and the company’s firstever six-cylinder diesel. As it will be based on the same rear-wheel-drive platform as the recently launched Giulia saloon, it should share the engine range, including the fourcylinder diesel and petrol units, too. “We owe our investors a constant stream of new, fresh global products that can be sold,” Fiat Chrysler chief technology officer Harald Wester told Auto Express. “It will be a relatively fast sequence of relevant and saleable products like saloons and SUVs.” The Giulia uses a 2.2-litre diesel with either 148bhp or 178bhp and a 2.0-litre petrol with 197bhp – and both are likely to appear in the larger saloon. Wester told us that the petrol engine has plenty of tuning potential, so it could even get a power boost to improve performance in the larger model. Alfa’s tech chief also hinted that the Giulia Quadrifoglio’s 503bhp twin-turbo V6 engine could make an appearance, alongside the company’s first-ever six-cylinder diesel. These additions would help it compete with the likes of the Mercedes E-Class and 5 Series. As with the Giulia, it’s likely to get an eight-speed automatic gearbox and a six-speed manual, although the UK-market version will be auto only. It’ll be priced in line with rivals, kicking off from around £35,000

for an entry-level diesel. The 5 Series rival is expected to follow the upcoming Stelvio SUV, as part of the brand’s rebirth over the next four years. The platform is brand new and is able to support many applications, which means the new model will also get a plug-in hybrid version. Alfa Romeo Europe boss Fabrizio Curci told us we’ll start to see electrification around 2018. “The platform is built to support whatever kind of electrification we do,” he said. “It can support everything from plug-in hybrid to full electric.” The platform also supports four-wheel drive, and even semi-autonomous driving, which is set to appear on the large saloon. The 5 Series rival will be a core part of Alfa Romeo’s plan for a new model range by 2020 (see below). We’re unlikely to see the new big saloon until around 2018, as the next car from the brand will be the Stelvio SUV. That car will also get the same range of engines as the Giulia, which could even include the hot 503bhp V6. Wester told us that “speciality models have to be part of the plan, as they are what made Alfa Romeo iconic. It’s possible for the Quadrifoglio engine to fit into the SUV. There is a market for it, but it’s very small.” Alfa bosses are tightlipped on what other speciality models are on the way, but Curci is interested in developing the 4C. He said: “We are thinking of how to do a special version, but not a Cloverleaf. We are thinking of what to do, but it won’t change the DNA – a different look and feel, maybe. http://www.autoexpress.co.uk

Union made moves to implement new rules on the labelling of tyres for sale. Much like washing machines or fridges, and even properties for sale, an easy indication of the tyre´s characteristics would be displayed on the label, enabling the buyer to choose their product based on such elements as efficiency, safety rating and noise. The information on the tyre label included roll resistance, graded from “A” which is the best performance, to a “G” rating, the lower end of the scale in tests. Tyres with a higher resistance increase the workload of the engine, in turn leading to higher fuel costs. Adherence to wet surfaces was also a graded factor on the label, once again graded “A” to “G”, with “A” showing the best performance. Across the spectrum of the rating scale, the braking distance between a grade “A” and a grade “G” tyre may be as much as 18 metres, significantly reducing the chance of avoiding a collision in the event of having to brake in wet weather. Of course, driving skills and ability can also allow for more compensation by increasing the distance between you and the vehicle in front, for example. Noise level is also included in the tyre rating, again, this can be determined by other factors such as the road itself. In many places, so called “quiet tarmac” has been installed to reduce noise, but the tyre noise rating is based on an average. When buying new tyres, always check the labelling system to ensure you know the quality of the tyres to be installed on your vehicle. Poor quality may increase risk and with tyre safety, compromise if not an ideal agenda.

Tyre Load Capacity

Following on from our introduction to checking tyres, we are going to look at some of the elements and details of vehicle tyres and the importance of what they mean. Knowing how to read a tyre forms part of the driving test in Spain, which is testament to how important the DGT feel the subject is. We have already said that they are arguably amongst the most important elements of a vehicle, and often the most abused, but sadly, they are often the most neglected. It is important that the vehicle´s tyres are of a high q u a l i t y, not least because LOS DOLSES S.L of the wear and tear they s u f f e r, BEST i nve s t i n g PRICES that little bit more PAID CARS FOR CASH in a tyre Call Spencer on 637 090 665 c o u l d make the MECHANIC WORKSHOP difference PHONE JAMES on 672 532 758 b e t w e e n

life and death. We have already detailed what the figures around the tyre mean but we will go over them briefly again as a reminder. If you look at the side of the tyre you will see a sequence which looks something like this sample, “195 / 55 R 16 87V”. Here, “195” refers to 195 millimetres, the nominal section width of the tyre. “55” is 55%, the aspect ratio, representing the height of the tyre sidewall as a percentage of the nominal section width, i.e., in

our case, 55% of 195mm. “R” stands for radial construction. “16” is the diameter of the tyre´s inner rim, this time in inches. “87” is the load capacity of the tyre. “V” indicates the maximum permitted speed. There is also the stamp indicating the week number and the year of manufacture. We want to look specifically at the load capacity of the tyre this time. As the summer holiday season starts, it is quite common for the family car to be loaded up for a long journey cross country, perhaps even across the continent, and the amount of cargo, as well as passengers, often increases compared to our normal daily commute. That is why we have to ensure that the load capacity of the tyre can handle the extra weight we place in the vehicle. Overloaded vehicles quite literally weigh down on the tyres which can increase the risk of uneven wear and the dangers that poses, but also hugely increases the risk of a “blow out”, which in turn could have fatal consequences. Sadly, for the average driver, they don´t make it too simple for us to immediately see what the load capacity is, as the number in the code needs to be converted to a weight. In our example, 87V, the tyres can carry a maximum load of 545 kilograms. Keep in mind though, this is the total maximum weight of the vehicle. It also shows why it is important that all the tyres on the vehicle match, as if they are different, the load capacity may be lower.

Witches’ Mountain by Gerald R. Wright

“The more he thought about it, the more he knew that Kate and the mountain would draw him back-especially Kate.” Our main character, Rick Jackson was 27 years old, reasonably open-minded, stoic, pragmatic and gregarious., quite a nice chap, in fact. A small, engineering company he had worked for as a salesman had folded but he was fortunate in finding similar work with another small business covering a wide and diverse territory of farms, lumber companies and engineering works. He loved the open country and mountains in their majestic natural beauty and grandeur. Just as well as his work covered the infamous mountain-Witches’ Mountain linked to the Salem trials. The novel begins with Rick driving his Mustang through the mountains, it’s twilight. The colours around him were spectacular: yellows, oranges and reds-a sight worth seeing and remembering. A comfort stop heading to Charlesburgh made him feel “as if he was in the back of beyond and somehow back in the past.” Was this moonshine country? Possibly. Whilst having a snack he met a typical hillbilly who advised him to go along the ridge, used by logging companies. Innocent enough but this is where the fun and mystery begins. He has a steep climb with sharp hair pin bends to test his nerve. The mist drifted “like fingers-long, vertical fingers” opening up “like curtains” as he passed through. A nice atmospheric touch.

imagined he had! Did he imagine it all or was this paranormal? When Rick drives along the same route, he discovers a large bundle lying in the middle of the road. He imagined it lying in a pool of blood. A flicker of lights on his left suggested flames and burning, unnerving even for a sceptic. Was this a body of another trucker? A dead body presumably? He couldn’t swerve safely and kept going forward waiting for the impact. Surprisingly, the impact didn’t happen: “There was no body, no pool of blood and no flames in the wood.” A return journey via Black Ridge, hopefully another comfort stop was perplexing. The tarmac was cracked and broken, the sign rusted, weeds had invaded the place and the roof had caved in. There was no sign of life or activity. He moved on to Spiller Township which reminded him of the cowboy days, an old west frontier town where you’d see plenty of gunfights. Another stop and an encounter with the gossip Mabel, a ghost who had died seven years ago. At this point he meets the love of his life, Kate, a Southern Belle and very pretty as you’d expect. Her mother had been married to Joe Kiley. Rick felt bewitched by her “as if by an irresistible magnetism. A moth to a flame.” Was it Kate or the mystery of the mountain? Her Great Granma was Roberta Elizabeth Lee and she had the “Talent.” She could see into the future and acted as a mediator “to stop things blowing up too much” and she predicts a “catastrophe.” But who will take over from her?

Rick became “decidedly uncomfortable” after his encounter with a rough-looking trucker displaying a vivid scar on his face at the Black Ridge Motel and Restaurant, a mountain truck stop. He later discovered that the trucker was Joe Kiley and he had left his old Kenworth truck outside in the parking lot. Mack and his wife Jenny owned the hotel. The plot moves slowly when Kiley left behind a camera after speaking to Rick. Our main character wanted to catch him to return it but it didn’t quite work out like that.

A second encounter with the old Kenworth truck seeming to be on the wrong side of the road, forced Rick into pulling the wheel over to the right to avoid a collision before realising it was the phantom truck: no truck, no trailer, no sound. Nothing.

We discover that Rick wasn’t superstitious but once he gleaned of the accident with Kiley’s truck where he lost control of his brakes, crashed through the barrier, left the road and rolled over and over down the mountain he wasn’t sure. Kiley was thrown through the windshield and his truck caught fire. What is coincidental was that this tragedy had occurred two years ago to the very day that Rick conversed with him or

Rick gets drawn into this paranormal world of Witches’ Mountain, full of danger and unpredictable. Can he understand it and survive its force, the powers of darkness? How would he have felt knowing that “something disastrous was imminent?” Armageddon? An excellent read for young adults in particular. Plenty of blood and gore.

During the Salem witch trials it seems that some of those accused took refuge on the mountain and since then there have been battles between forces of good against evil. In the past, fires and pestilence have helped to restore some sense of order.

EUROGOLF SOCIETY

On Thursday 16 June the Eurogolf Society played the final qualifying Stableford competition of the season. The results of the day will go towards the eclectic scores to determine the eventual eclectic winner. La Marquesa course was in excellent condition with the fairways and greens running true, following the recent hollow tinning. Some good golf played today resulting in exceptional scores coming in. The overall winner of the monthly Stableford trophy was, one of our newer members, Bert Lawson with a score of 38 points. A good week for Bert, who also won the TOFFS game on Tuesday. Los Reyes Golf Society June Report The temperature has certainly gone up since June began, but this doesn’t stop Los Reyes from their important work of playing golf and raising money for the sick and needy kids of the Mazarron region. This month’s competition was sponsored by TJ points, second on count back with 33 points, was first time out this year Kevin Jones. Third with an admirable 31 points off a handicap of 5 was our very own Monarch of the Glen, Neil MacFarlane. Great results lads.

Electricals the Euronics shop on Camposol and the venue was the absolutely fantastic La Requelme golf course. It is clear why this course is labelled the Championship course, beautifully prepared, but posing a huge challenge with water and incredibly numerous bunkers everywhere. Some so deep that we had to use ropes to get some of our more senior members back out onto the fairways. The format for the day was a singles stableford, with some very noteworthy returns, considering the degree of dif f ic ult y and the heat which was up in the high 30’s. Overall winner w a s B a r r y Martin with a s c o r e of 33

Los Amigos Golf Society; June competition, Altoreal. Following the ‘bloody’ exchanges between the Celts and the Saxons at last month’s Captains Day competition, it was time for the Los Amigos Golf Society (LAGS) to get back to a more traditional form of sedate golf. The LAGS June competition was held at the always popular Altoreal Golf Course. Altoreal is one of the few golf courses visited by LAGS that is surrounded by ‘life’. Many golf courses that we play are on urbanisations more akin to ghost towns, others are in the middle of nowhere! The Altoreal course winds its way through a bustling urbanisation with schools, shops and community activities all seemingly well supported. In fact if you arrive at Altoreal during the rush hour there is every chance that you will miss your tee off time! The course was in excellent condition and very lush, which is hardly surprising given the huge storm that battered the place just a couple of days before. Thirty nine members and guests travelled (an unavoidable withdrawal meant that the 40 planned starters had to include a ‘Mr Spare’, whose presence would probe significant). The format of the day was a team Pinehirst with all players requiring 4 drives, except of course ‘Mr Spare’, who was excused these onerous duties. An excellent fun, friendly and benign day was followed by a presentation evening at the Camposol Clubhouse. Almost 60 members and partners attended the evening with +40 still being in attendance long after the presentations had been completed!

Several NTP prizes were on offer, with Hole No. 15 being sponsored by the generous Costa Calida Chronicle, was won with a fantastic shot from Royston Quigley. From a tee 155mtrs away, his shot landed the ball 0.78mtrs from the pin. Well done Roy. Other NTP winners on the day were Peter Coupland and Alan Benton. On the day, we also welcomed three new members to our society, Peter, Allen and Andy and hope that they enjoyed themselves. Preparation is well underway for our Open Day Golf Competition in October. This is a competition dedicated to raising money for Children In Need, hence our name The Kings, or Kids In Need Golf Society. If you would like to know more about our society or enter a team in the Open, please contact:- perry. dave@hotmail.com or barrymartin. spain@gmail.com or d11toddy@ yahoo.co.uk See more about us at www. hefflegolf.com Spanish Section

And so to the results: It had to be said that ‘Mr Spare’ (as expected) was faultless throughout the day and (unsurprisingly) finished in the winning team! His teammates of Alan Benton, Darren Lefevre and Jim McCormack would argue that they had to carry him all day and there might be an element of truth in that! Well done guys, 134 points is an excellent return! The Runners Up were Ray Reynolds, Keith Davis, Len Whalen and Phil Linton with 127 pts. The nearest the pin winners were: Hole 5 Keith Davies 1.96 meters, Hole 8 Dave Gautier 5.45 meters, Hole 10 Ray Reynolds 6.2 meters and finally Hole17 Paul Davis 9.2 meters. Many thanks go to all the staff at Altoreal. Thanks also to the staff at Camposol Clubhouse especially Stuart and Anton (the chef) for the excellent food that was served at the Presentation evening. Finally a huge thank you to the Sol Times who have supported LAGS for many years.... we really appreciate your support!

Thirty-four members were joined by 6 guests for SMGS’s first visit to La Manga for a very long time. In excellent condition, as one would expect of a venue with La Manga’s history and continued reputation, the South Course proved testing for many. Whilst there was nothing particularly obvious that made things difficult, with the exception of the frequent placing of pins behind bunkers, and with, perhaps, the courses overall length having an impact, many struggled, especially in the lower two categories. Gold players made a better fist of it, with the best score of the day, 36 points, coming from its winner, John Osborne, on a rich run of form and stretching his lead at the head of this season’s Order of Merit. The remaining doubles semifinal match saw the pairing of aforementioned John and Darren Hancock take on a partner-less Steve Higgins, with Mike Frankish, Steve’s colleague, having to drop out through injury. Whilst Steve put up a very valiant fight, he eventually went down 5&4. John and Darren will now meet Steve Davis and Ivan Hanak in the final, Steve H having to make do with a singles final encounter. CD MONTESINOS – ABOUT THE NEW MANAGER

The new Boss wants to concentrate on “building a Club not just a team” so he will be looking to incorporate the youth (under 19) players more into the first team squad. Having said that, he has been made aware that the Club are looking to finally make that jump up one level to the 1st Regional and with this in mind, he will be looking to bring between 5 to 7 new players into the Club, including a number of players more used to a higher division. When we spoke to Camacho, he had only just been appointed to the “hot seat” at the Municipal and did not want to commit himself regarding next season, although he was adamant that he wanted his side to be well organised, disciplined and be fighting for promotion right to the final minute of the final game of the season. Discipline or a lack of discipline, has cost “Monte” dear in previous seasons. Roberto last year appeared to correct that with players picking up less “silly” red and yellow cards than in previous seasons. Camacho made it clear that then the games were followed by food he wants to continue along this route and as an example, went on to say “at my and drink and watching the football previous club I actually released five players over an incident with a referee. I will not tolerate indiscipline at my clubs”. back at Café Uno. It goes without saying that we wish CAMACHO the best of luck and a long a Only one category today due to the number of players. The results follow:- successful time at CD Montesinos. VAMOS MONTE!!! 1st N.Padmore - 33pts. 2nd L.Tyas - 30pts. 3rd P.Buckler - 28pts.

Jose Ignacio Camacho Pavon has joined CD Montesinos as their new manager for the forthcoming season. Camacho, as he is known in football circles, arrived at the club after being involved at Orihuela CF for the past three seasons, managing at both youth level and latterly running the reserve side, Deportivo Orihuela who are in the same Division and Group as CD Montesinos. Camacho, an ex-professional player who has played for a number of clubs including La Liga Malaga CF, is from Andalucía and is 42 years old, is hoping to continue the good work laid down by ex- Manager Roberto Cases, who he knows well.

The following week we are having a Captains day which is to be played at Vistabella.

15 members turned out on the 14th June for a 'Hidden Partners' competition. Each player returns a Stableford Score and a draw pairs them with another player for a combined total. After the cards were returned, everyone wanted to be paired with Graham Blakeway, who returned a magnificent 46 points. Also Mel Hope, fresh from his previous week's Hole-inOne, had a superb 40 points. Both of these are Yorkshiremen and proud of it. The 3rd 'Tyke' - myself - returned a 38 and drew a low scoring partner and did not get anything for my endeavours – apart from a Handicap cut. The person to be paired with Graham was Bryan Watson, who carded a creditable 34 points himself. Nearest the pins : Hole 2, Graham Blakeway, Hole 9, Gordon Wayne

3rd Place, Ray Housley, Lawrence Wanty both 9 Handicap – 69 points. 2nd Place, Mel Hope, Handicap 9, Stewart Patterson Handicap 15 - 71 points. 1st Place, Graham Blakeway, Handicap 12, Bryan Watson, Handicap 17 – 80 points. If anyone would like to join our Society, we play at El Plantio Golf Club on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. We use both courses - the Par 3 nine hole course and the main 18 hole course, so we cater for all abilities. The membership rates are very competitive, so call for more details. Anyone who wishes to play in the Society as a guest or join as a new member, contact Ian Henderson on 966 716 616 or 636 116 230.
