Summer Fair in Calp Old Town

You know about Calp? You might know the Peñón de Ifach and the lonja, the place in the port where they sell fish. The salt lake with flamingos, the long sea promenades and all those modern flats with full view of the sea. But do you know the old town centre at the top of the hill? Narrow little houses on each side of painted stairs decorated with plants in large pots, people still sitting outside talking over the day with their neighbours. Part of the medieval city walls, and several blind walls painted with fake windows and balconies. Snug little bars and restaurants, where you can sit outside and enjoy your meal or drink in a nostalgic, quiet atmosphere. In addition to all this, there is one of the Amata craft fairs with stalls selling craft work made by the people at the stall. Every evening at 7, from 11 July till 11 September, the Calle Libertat is closed to traffic and some ten or fifteen artisans open their stalls. Stalls with wooden toys, leather goods, macramé, ceramics, painted roof tiles and all sorts of other interesting and unique pieces. Some of the people will be at work, and every evening, at 8 o’clock, one of them will run a workshop where children of all ages (come on, Grandma!) can have a go at making something with their own hands. Some of the people on the stalls are pretty good jugglers or play music - and these have decided to amuse the motley crowd that passes in exchange for the odd coin in the proverbial hat. There are also three pleasant eateries in the street itself, with half a dozen more within 100 yards. All in all, a pretty good place to go when you’ve been watching the waves lap the beach all day. To get there, walk up the Gabriel Miró (the main shopping street in Calp), keep going and after another 100 yards you pass the Town Hall with the flags outside. Just a little further the road splits, and you take a left-ish turn. Another 50 yards, and you turn left into the Calle de la Justicia. Trundle along, and you pass the Plaza de España, which has a genuine fountain (not a very big one) in the middle - and there you are. Or you can take a ride in the little tourist train that runs all the way from the La Fossa beach up till the top of the old town (and back!), stopping at 100 yards from the fair.

For more information, ring Elvira on 639 979 678 (she speaks English) or have a look on www.amata.es (in Spanish and English), which gives some idea of what Amata does, and shows pretty photographs.

British Ambassador Issues Calming Message to Expats

The British Ambassador to Spain, Simon Manley, has issued a calming video message to British Expats living in Spain following the result of the UK referendum on EU membership. In his message, the British Ambassador explains that British Expats living in Spain as well as the rest of the European Union will experience no change to their current legal status in the 28 nation bloc. Under EU treaties, any country seeking to exit the EU has a period of up to TWO YEARS to negotiate their exit terms with the rest of the EU. Complete withdrawal from the EU could take several years more as the UK and EU unwind each other from regulation and bureaucracy built up over more than 40 years of partnership. Importantly, the clock doesn’t begin ticking until formal notification has been given to the EU by the UK. Mr Manley was keen to stress that all the rights to live, work and travel in Spain as well as the rest of the EU was still the same as the day before the referendum. During the initial negotiation period, both the UK and EU continue to be bound by EU obligations, which apply to British nationals living in Spain. He also pointed out there was no need for

concerned Expats to formally change their status in Spain. However, some Expats are already beginning to feel the effects of the Brexit vote to leave the EU. Pensioners who receive their pensions in pounds/sterling have been hit hard by the sudden drop in the value of the pound against the Euro and Dollar. Whilst nowhere near as low as in 2010 when the pound hit record lows and almost reach like for like against the Euro, the sudden drop has come as a shock. Events following the Brexit vote are unfolding very quickly and those who receive their income from the UK in pounds/sterling should consult a money transfer specialist such as MoneyCorp to secure a favourable exchange rate before things deteriorate any further. “The whole unfamiliar Brexit process is beset by uncertainty” said MoneyCorp in a recent currency brief. “No country has ever exited the EU before. We should expect more downside for the pound.” Whilst so much uncertainty remains post-Brexit, Expats should take comfort from Simon Manley’s video message, but prepare, as best as possible, for any eventualities. thinkspain

US First Lady praises Spain’s Queen Letizia and tells young girls they are lucky to live in a country that gives them opportunities Speaking to a packed auditorium in Madrid, US First Lady Michelle Obama on Thursday requested a global cultural change to fight gender inequality. The event capped a threenation trip to raise awareness about the plight of millions of girls who are denied access to education across the world. Before Spain, Obama visited Liberia and Morocco to promote her Let Girls Learn campaign. Te First Lady spoke inside the cultural center Matadero de Madrid, where there was a majority of young women in the crowd. Many of them were high school and university students who had waited in line since 8am for a chance to hear Obama’s speech, which she delivered at 11am. Sitting in the crowd was Madrid Mayor Manuela Carmena, who gave the First Lady a necklace shaped like the Madrid skyline; acting deputy prime minister Soraya Sáez de Santamaría; the government delegate in Madrid, Concepción Dancausa; and US Ambassador James Costos. Michelle Obama said she was honored by the presence of Spain’s Queen Letizia, and reminded the women in the audience of “how lucky you are to live in a country that gives you opportunities,” noting that elsewhere in the world, “62 million talented women like yourselves lack such opportunities. That affects their own future and the future of their families and their countries.” To illustrate her point, the First Lady talked about her recent visits to Liberia and Morocco, where she met with teenage girls who work by day and study by night to fulfill their dreams of going to college and becoming nurses, secretaries or schoolteachers. But Michelle Obama also warned that “gender inequality is not limited to developing countries” like the ones she has just visited. Although progress has been made – she noted the fact

that a woman now stands a chance of becoming the next president of the United States – “those changes are not being reflected in culture.” In the First Lady’s travel diary, Michelle Obama wrote: “I’ll be ending my trip in Spain where I’ll be giving a speech to a group of young women who are in high school and college, and I’ll be urging them to do their part to help girls worldwide attend school. And that’s really the key point I want to make during this trip to young women like you here at home: You have the power, right now, to step up and be a champion for those 62 million girls who aren’t in school. You have everything you need right now to raise awareness about their stories and to support their efforts to get an education.” Using herself as an example, she said that “when I graduated everyone asked me, ‘When are you going to get married, when are you going to have kids?’” This culture of inequality is detrimental to both men and women, she added. “When a man changes a diaper, he’s practically a hero; when a woman does it, it’s her obligation. Old-fashioned forms of culture have an impact on society.” A lawyer by trade, Michelle Obama asked societies “not just to change laws, but hearts and minds as well,” and encouraged parents to let their girls study math and play soccer like the boys. The First Lady of the United States ended her speech with words of friendship for Queen Letizia. “She is a person who thinks like me in terms of empowering young women; she is a very powerful voice, a model for you all. And I consider her a friend,” she said. Queen Letizia gave a speech of her own in English and Spanish defending the work carried out by the Spanish Cooperation Agency to empower women in developing countries. elpais

3 Nearly 100,000 Spaniards migrated in 2015, highest figure since crisis began

New statistics also show that Spain’s population shrank for the fourth year in a row Nearly 100,000 Spaniards moved abroad last year, the highest figure since the beginning of the crisis in 2008, new statistics show. Figures released on Thursday by the National Statistics Institute (INE) show that 98,934 Spaniards left the country in 2015, a 23% rise from the previous year. Of these, 64,136 were born in Spain and 34,798 acquired Spanish citizenship later in life. There were more deaths than births last year, and more emigration than immigration The INE data also shows a slight predominance of male emigration: 52.1% of Spanish emigrants in 2015 were men. Emigrants’ main destinations last year were Britain, France, Germany, United States and Ecuador. In the latter case, the statistics show that emigrants were mostly Ecuadoreans who obtained Spanish nationality and are now returning home with their Spanish-born children. There was also a rise in the number of Spaniards returning home after a period abroad. Last year 52,227 individuals came back to Spain, representing a 27.5% rise from 2014. Comparing those who left

with those who returned, there was negative net migration of 46,707. As for foreigners who emigrated last year, most hailed from Romania, Morocco and Italy. For the first time since 2010, more foreigners arrived in Spain (291,387) than those who left (253,069), bucking a trend that began with the economic crisis and the lack of jobs. The data also shows that Spain’s population has fallen for the fourth year in a row. In 2015 there was a drop of 11,142 people, bringing the national total to 46,438,442. That was because there were more deaths than births last year, and because there was more emigration than immigration. Broken down by regions, Castilla y León lost the biggest share of population (23,209 fewer residents), followed by Asturias and Aragón. At the other end of the spectrum, the Balearic Islands added 9,648 new residents. Madrid and the Canary Islands also registered significant population growth elpais

Terra Natura employee killed by tiger

ort A tiger attacked and killed a zookeeper in its cage at a Spanish animal park Saturday, the local Red Cross service said. The grim discovery of the keeper’s body was made at around 5:00 pm at the Terra Natura park in the southeastern coastal resort town of Benidorm. Local Police called the Red Cross, but by the time the ambulance arrived it was too late. “The tiger was still in the cage with the 37-year-old keeper,” a Red Cross spokesman told AFP. Zoo staff put the animal to sleep with sedative darts after which the emergency workers were able to get in and pronounce the woman dead. Visitors were in the zoo at the time of the incident, but it is understood that none witnessed the attack. The Terra Natura in Benidorm, which is in Spain’s Alicante province, presents itself on its website as “a new generation” animal park, with a habitat area created for each of 200 species of animals. According to Terra Natura’s website, it is an “immersion zoo” with more than 1,500 animals. The death of a zookeeper in Benidorm comes two and a half months after Stacey Konwiser. A zookeeper, was fatally mauled at Palm Beach zoo in Florida. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/

Vueling mayhem after third day of string of flights cancelled

CHAOS at Barcelona airport ran into a third day last (Saturday) after more flights run by the low-cost carrier Vueling were cancelled. Connections to London, Cagliari, Algiers, Málaga, Paris and Ibiza were affected, and the Bilbao-Alicante and Bilbao-Málaga routes stopped running altogether. Queues across the terminal were seen on Thursday, Friday and yesterday as disgruntled travellers tried to find a solution to their problem, having turned up at the airport to find they were unable to fly. Those flights which have taken off in the last three days have been severely delayed, often by over two hours, as has been the case with those heading to Ibiza, Lyon and Amsterdam. Vueling's website for the cancelled flights read: "We regret to inform you that, due to operational reasons, your flight will not be operating, but we have changed your booking to the next available flight." Passengers were told to check the 'your booking' section on the website or App, or call the customer service line for more information. They were told to fill in a claim form on the website to recover overnight accommodation costs if necessary. Sales manager for Vueling David García Blancas apologised publicly to the affected customers and said the

firm was 'doing everything in its power' to 'resolve the current situation'. Up to 150 stood in the queue at the information desk in Barcelona at one point, a group of whom had missed their connection to Gran Canaria due to a delay of several hours in their flight from Oslo to Barcelona taking off. The exact cause of the cancellations and delays is not yet known, although some inside sources blame 'organisational problems' leading to a 'lack of staff and aircraft' making it difficult for the carrier to fulfil its duties to all holders of flight tickets sold. Catalunya's regional consumer protection agency, ACC - part of the regional government - has ordered Vueling and airline governing body AENA to provide all the information it can about the problems preventing passengers from flying on time, or at all. thinkspain

SPANISH BANKS SET TO PAY BILLIONS IN COMPENSATION TO BRITISH VICTIMS OF COSTAS PROPERTY CRASH • Spanish Supreme Court ruling offers hope to the estimated 100,000 Britons who became casualties of Spain’s financial meltdown • Judgment will force Spanish banks to hand back as much as £4bn to Brits who paid deposits for holiday homes that were never built • Average deposit paid per property was around £40,000, with victims now able to claim a full refund plus interest Barcelona, June 2016 – A landmark judgment by Spain’s Supreme Court could finally offer closure to the estimated 100,000 Britons whose dreams of owning a place in the sun ended in a nightmare. The ruling paves the way for anyone who paid a deposit to secure an “off-plan” property – but lost it in Spain’s financial crisis – to claim back the money. The Spanish costas are still littered with unfinished holiday homes after the country’s financial meltdown in 2008 drove hundreds of property developers out of business. Would-be buyers who had paid deposits averaging £40,000 never saw their money again as building firms went bankrupt or simply disappeared. But now a decision by Spain’s highest court to hold banks responsible for the missing money deposited in their accounts could allow British victims to claim back up to £4bn in lost deposits, according to research by the law firm Spanish Legal Reclaims. Despite the lack of official data, the firm estimates that Spanish banks could be forced to refund up to £15bn to “off-plan” buyers from across Europe who lost their deposits in the crash. They include Stephanie Davis and her late husband who lost around 75,000 Euros on a house they tried to buy on the Costa del Sol. They bought it “off plan”, and had paid a deposit and several additional payments, totalling half of the 150,000 Euro asking price. They were within days of completing the purchase when the developer, Martinsa Fadesa went into liquidation and she was promised that she would get her money

back… but so far she has received just 700 Euros! Stephanie is now retired and living in straitened circumstances after losing so much money. She is desperately hoping that the ruling will force the bank that held her money on behalf of the developer to pay it back. She says, “If I could get my money back that would be amazing”.

July 2016

Mrs Stephanie Davis

With more Britons owning a holiday home in Spain than any other nationality, UK citizens were hit disproportionately hard by Spain’s catastrophic property crash. Spanish Legal Reclaims’ research shows that as many as 100,000 Britons who had paid deposits to reserve an off-plan property in Spain lost some or all their money when the country’s construction industry imploded. Emilio Alvarez, Legal strategist at Spanish Legal Reclaims, explains: “As relatively small creditors, their chances of getting back their money from a bankrupt developer through the conventional insolvency process were virtually nil”. “But the ruling by Spain’s Supreme Court sets a crucial precedent – that the banks that held buyers’ deposits can in many cases be held liable for their loss”. “While this is wonderful news for the thousands of Britons who became innocent victims of Spain’s financial meltdown, the banks have proved reluctant to pay back what they owe without a fight”. “Spanish Legal Reclaims has unparalleled expertise in this area of law, and has formed a dedicated legal team to help non-Spaniards who lost out lodge a successful claim and win their money back”. Spanish Legal reclaims can be contacted by telephone in Spain on 93 680 4563 or in the UK on 0845 680 3849.

The start of July and half the year has gone – where? The heat has struck the Spanish south coast area as have the people! It will not be long until the whole of Madrid descends on Puerto de Mazarron! – or that is how it feels! The other day the normal 5 minute drive from Puerto to Bolnuevo took me 20 minutes! - really do not mind – it is the lifeblood of the coastal towns and although it is an inconvenience to residents it is just for 6 weeks of the year.

FOOTWORK DANCE STUDENTS OUTSTANDING SUCCESS

Great credit has to be given to the students of Footwork Dance Studios in Los Montesinos, who recently took their ISTD (Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance) exams. Each year an examiner is flown over from the Society’s headquarters in the UK. The exams accredited by the Council For Dance and Education are taken in Tap, Modern and Jazz and this year the Studios received a 100% pass rate , with over 90% of students gaining the top mark of distinction.

Footwork Dance attracts students from all around the Costa Blanca area, who attend lessons throughout the week at the Studios in Los Montesinos under the instruction of fully qualified teacher Erica Dorrill. Lessons are available for all ages and abilities and anyone is welcome to

come along have a chat about classes and see the two well equipped studios at Calle Carlos Diez in Los Montesinos . For more information contact Erica on 662 003 823. Or visit the web site www. footworkdancestudios.com

Don’t miss the opportunity to see the students in their annual summer show “VIVA LA DANZA” at the Casa de Cultura y Musica in Los Montesinos on Sunday 24th July at 7.30 pm. This will be a fabulous family show featuring all types of dance. By the time of reading this we will have the UK / EU exit . or not , result ……… we at Rainbow are firm “Ins” but respect all viewpoints – my worry is a world with Boris and Trump leading two major nations and a third – Spain – with no effective government after their rerun elections on 26th June. Watch the space ……………. TV News ………….. Has to again be the satellite signals that are at the lowest I have ever known them in the 20+ years of running Rainbow Satellites. Anyone in the south west of the region will be having some form of issues even with 1.90m dishes ……… some channels are just not available. Have to say the mainstream channels - BBC/ITV/4/5 should be fine with such dishes but the fact that they have weakened some channel signals to a non-existent level down here means that they could do it with those mainstream ones ……. I predict it is just a matter of time. As a general rule we at Rainbow can improve most satellite receptions by critical absolute alignment of dishes and LNB’s but we often cannot leave reception perfect. My definition of good TV is 24/7 watching of any channel you want ………. But satellite reception of UK TV in this part of Spain is not that way and I doubt will ever be again. Internet TV is the way forward but again 24/7 uninterrupted viewing is not always possible due to the internet supplies available here. The internet TV systems are working well and

they often get the blame for poor viewing when it is actually the internet that is at fault. If you are thinking of swapping to internet TV ask your internet supplier if they will support net TV and if not change to one that will. There are many ways to get internet TV … some work well others not ! The Rainbow system has all major channels including Sports and Movies (SKY and BT) along with a box set library and movie library. Up to 60 day catch up TV is also available all for under €0.70c per day! Ask us for a demonstration. Viewing results will always be better if we can run a cable from the digibox at the TV location to the Internet router ……… always bear this in mind if getting internet installed. As a general rule WIFI is not good enough for live TV. But as in all walks of life get an expert in to look at your requirements and advise on a “best action” for your circumstances – this should cost you nothing (certainly will not with Rainbow Satellites !) – do not impulse buy from the “market stall” or “internet advert” and then ask us to fix it! Often we cannot get into the “inner workings” and help you out and the seller will have disappeared! Well that’s it for this month – I am returning to the pool with a glass of wine and enjoy the reason I live in Spain – warm relaxation. Both individuals and businesses can support local businesses, all you have to do is: ...whenever you can, buy from a local business as opposed to buying outside of your region. These days, when most people do the majority of their shopping in giant supermarkets, out of town shopping complexes or city centre malls, it can be difficult to draw attention to a small business trading locally. But with concerns being raised over community cohesion, social inclusion and the environment, the local business has never been more important. It’s down to enterprising business owners like you to promote the importance of supporting local businesses so that the public understand why it matters and how it can benefit whole communities. In order to tackle the trend toward supermarket shopping, it’s important to understand why people choose it. Research indicates that the reasons they most frequently cite are the variety of products available and the convenience of having them all in one place.

Challenge this directly through poster campaigns and advertisements which emphasise the variety offered by small independent businesses, contrasted with the way that monopolies tend toward homogenisation. Remind people how convenient it is to have a lot of small shops offering different products and services located in the area, and how convenient it is to be able to shop close to home. It’s okay to admit that big business has the edge in some areas if you stress that there’s a cost to this. For instance, you could have a poster featuring a pint of milk which acknowledges that it’s cheaper in the supermarket but points out how much less time is spent if it can be picked up nearby, so that it still pays to shop locally. If your business purchases its products locally, it’s worth emphasising this - shopping with you means supporting local producers and cutting down on the environmental costs of long distance transport. If you sell food, it also means getting fresher produce. You can also point out that local businesses mean local jobs and increased opportunities for local people, encouraging the young to stay in the area and become positively involved with the community. It cuts out the daily commute for many people and makes their working lives more pleasant

What You Need to Know About Sunscreen

health & beauty Tel: 950 121 936 - sales@soltimes.com

How Does the Sun Damage our Skin The sun’s light rays which cause damage to our skin in the form of burning, aging and genetic mutations (which can lead to cancer) are collectively known as ultraviolet or UV rays. They can be further categorized into UVA and UVB rays (there are also UVC rays which are absorbed by the ozone and therefore not a concern for us). Although present year round UVB rays are most prevalent on bright sunny days in the brightest part of the day (between 10am and 4pm) during summer months. This form of UV light is what can cause damage to the upper layers of the skin and lead to photoaging and sunburn. UVA light is present even on cloudy days. It is much more prevalent than UVB light and indeed it accounts for 95% of ultraviolet radiation. UVA light affects lower layers of the skin and it is UVA rays which are responsible for tanning. In the past UVA rays were thought to be harmless and sunscreen typically only protected against UVB light (many sunscreen still only carry this protection). More recently, studies have shown that both UVA and UVB rays can cause damage to skin cells leading to mutations in those cells which can cause cancer. The World Heath Organization along with many other experts have identified ultraviolet light as a known human carcinogen. Basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas (BCC and SCC) are mainly caused by UV damage to the skin cells. Melanoma is the most invasive and most dangerous form of skin cancer and this also has strong links to sun exposure and skin damage.

What is sunscreen?

Naturally health risks like these warrant some attention

and we all want to protect ourselves from unnecessary risk where possible. That is of course where sun screen comes in. The active ingredient in sunscreen come in two forms- chemical filter and physical filters. 1.Chemical filters absorb the UV radiation before it penetrates the skin. These include chemicals such as Oxybenzome, Avobenzone, Actisalate, Octocrylene, Homosalate and Octisalate. 2.Physical sunscreens work by reflecting the UV away from the skin. They are composed of nano sized mineral particles. They are also sometimes known as mineral filters. Examples of these include Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide. http://yaletownnaturopathic.com

window tinting benefits

There are many benefits of window tinting. In hot weather, it cuts down heat, which can reduce air conditioning expenses. In cold weather, it reflects interior heat back into the house, reducing heating costs. Along with heat reduction, window film can also help protect your curtains and furniture from the effects of the sun. To protect home furnishings, a window film will block almost 99 percent of the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Some window films offer another benefit such as shatter resistance. The film holds glass shards together and acts as a barrier between the interior of the home and the glass. Window films can also help to reduce the glare on your television. The percentage of glare reduction is usually related to the visible light transmittance. The lower the amount of light transmitted through the film, the greater the glare reduction inside the home.

Al ‘Scarface’ Capone

In 1899, Alphonse ‘Al’ Capone was born into a respectable Italian family in Brooklyn. One of nine children, he left school at 14 after punching a teacher in the face. He found work in a bowling alley where he met the gangster Johnny Torrio; Torrio recruited the young Capone into his James Street Boys gang and taught him how to project a smart and respectable image. Capone got the nickname Scarface after he’d insulted a woman so her brother Frank Gallucio had attacked him with a knife. Torrio ordered Capone to apologise to the family and later Capone employed Frank as a bodyguard. At 19 Capone married an Irish Catholic Mae Coughlin; as he was under 21 his parents had to give their permission. Johnny Torrio relocated to Chicago to run a brothel business for his boss Big Jim Colosimo. In 1919 shortly after marrying, Capone moved to Chicago to assist Torrio. Big Jim was soon dead (killed reputedly by Capone) so Johnny conveniently took over. Prohibition started in 1920 giving new opportunities for Capone and

Many of us are probably still in a state of shock following the result of the recent referendum. Whether we supported Remain or Leave, we’re probably struggling to comprehend all the resultant implications, aware that more consequences may yet become apparent in due time. With some campaigners now apparently distancing themselves from statements made earlier, we’re now told that there might not be quite as much additional funding available for NHS as previously hoped, additional taxation or further cuts may be needed to balance the books and immigration won’t necessarily be reduced. And with feelings running high we’re seeing an increase in racial attacks and fears that, far from getting greater, Britain could well face a reduction in World influence as Scotland, and quite possibly Northern Ireland seek independence as a means of maintaining their membership of the EU. But why should we be surprised? For the success of democracy depends on the electorate being well informed; yet on this occasion facts, as opposed to scare stories and misinformation, seemed in remarkably short supply from both sides of the debate, leaving few of us able to vote with any real confidence. And this of course is no

new phenomenon. Why, just under 2000 years ago, in what must have been one of the first recorded referenda, Pilate called on the crowd to vote on the fate of Jesus, falsely accused of having claimed to be King, in direct opposition to Caesar. “So”, he asked the crowd, “should he remain alive? Or be executed?” And the Bible tells us how with lies and misinformation, the politicians and religious leaders of the day stirred up their electorate to vote overwhelmingly for his execution, in one of the greatest travesties of justice the World has ever seen, beside which our present troubles pale into insignificance. We may bemoan the failures of others, but recognising our own failings, we need, like the followers of Jesus, to move forward in a spirit of love, to serve the needs of others as best we can.

his boss. As Chicago, sits on the edge of Lake Michigan, it was easy to import Canadian whiskey. Only a day’s drive away are New York and Atlantic City, so Rum and Scotch whisky were smuggled in from the east coast. Two of Al’s brothers worked for him, Ralph ran his beer brewing and bottling business, Frank was sharp suited like Al with a reputation for violence and was his enforcer. By chance a third brother James became a prohibition agent, In 1923 the new Chicago Mayor started to clean up the city; Torrio sent Al and his brother Frank to a suburb called Cicero were they infiltrated the Republican run council. They persuaded the council leader Klenha and other councillors to benefit from the mob payroll. Then it was easy to transfer brothels, gambling dens and speakeasies to the area. Al appointed Frank as council liaison, so when in 1924 the Democrats tried to win local elections Frank had men armed with machine guns and shotguns at polling booths to ensure locals ‘voted right.’ In response Chicago Police

sent plain clothes reinforcements. Al and Frank mistook the policemen as rival gang members and a shootout ensued leaving Frank dead. Al was heartbroken at the loss of his brother and retaliated by kidnapping and killing officials. He then stole ballot boxes ensuring Klenha won again. After a failed assassination attempt on him; Torrio retired and returned to Italy leaving the business to Capone. By now even the latest Mayor of Chicago was being bribed and Capone’s businesses were turning over a $100 million a year. Capone courted the press and was often photographed at restaurants and the opera. He was a philanthropist too, setting up soup kitchens during the Great Depression and gave a lot of money to charity. Once after a failed attempt on his life had resulted in the injury of a mother and son, he paid the family’s hospital bills. Strangely the police never had enough evidence to convict Capone on any charges. He used cash for everything to avoid a paper trail

but after buying and renovating a mansion in Florida the government used that as evidence to jail him for 9 years in 1931 for tax evasion. Capone almost got away with it but his plan to bribe the jury was discovered and the jurors were switched at the last moment. Capone bought special privileges whilst inside at first but then got transferred to a new prison - Alcatraz. Here he couldn’t communicate with his gang and with prohibition ending in 1935 business dried up. Capone suffered from syphilis and was released in 1939; moving to Florida a very sick man. The disease attacked his brain leaving him with the mental age of a child. He died quietly at home surrounded by family in 1947; aged just 48. The HBO series Boardwalk Empire portrays the prohibition story brilliantly.

LOOKING TO BUY OR RENT? FIND YOUR DREAM LOCATION INSIDE! Rental Housing Prices Rose by 1% in May

The average price of rental housing in Spain increased by 1% in May this year, to stand at 7.36 euros/m2 per month. This month-on-month increase continues the trend that prevailed during 2015, when rental prices started to go up again after eight years of widespread declines. In addition, according to the latest data from property portal, fotocasa, the average rental price in May is a return to the levels registered in October 2012, when the average price stood at 7.38 euros/m2 per month. In May, a total of 15 regions registered monthon-month rental price increases, ranging from 3.9% in the Balearic Islands to 0.1% in Catalonia and La Rioja, while only one region recorded a decline and prices remained stable in one other. Year-on-year, all of Spain’s regions registered increases. Moreover, the overall average increase in May, of 5% year-onyear, is the biggest year-on-year increase registered since the portal’s historical records began in January 2006. Since the maximum average price recorded in May 2007 (10.12 euros/m2 per month) the price

of rental housing has accumulated a decline of -27.2%, and four regions have registered declines in excess of -30% since the maximum prices reached. These are: Aragón (-40.2%); Castilla-La Mancha (-35.3%); Cantabria (-34.9%) and Valencia (-30.3%). In the ranking of prices, Madrid is the most expensive region in which to rent, with an average price of 10.29 euros/m2 per month, followed by Catalonia (10.23 euros/m2) and the Basque Country (10.18 euros/m2). In contrast, the regions with the most affordable rental housing are Extremadura (4.53 euros/m2 per month) and Castilla-La Mancha (4.69 euros/m2). The study, which also analyses the price of rental housing in the various districts of Madrid and Barcelona, shows that Spain’s most expensive district is located in Barcelona. Ciutat Vella in Barcelona has an average rental price of 16.14 euros/m2 per month, while in Madrid, the most

Home Mortgages Climbed by 24.6% in April

propert y services

According to the latest mortgage statistics published by the National Statistics Institute, the Spanish mortgage market is continuing to recover as, in April, the number of new mortgage loans granted for the purchase of a home registered an increase of 24.6%, over the same month of 2015, to reach a total of 23,607 transactions. This significant year-on-year rise, with which home mortgages accumulated 23 consecutive months of increases, is 10 points higher than the figure recorded in March, when it rose by 14.5%. The average value of the mortgages constituted on housing in Spain in April reached 108,354 euros, which is 5.1% more than in the same month of last year, while the total capital loaned increased by 30.9%, year-on-year, to over 2,557 million euros. Month-on-month (April over March), the number of new mortgages on homes rose by 2.7%, representing its largest rise in this month since 2013, while the capital loaned rose by 3.2%, also its largest increase since 2013. In the first four months of 2016, the market accumulated an increase of 16.2%, with increases of 18.6% in the capital loaned, and of 2% in the average loan value. In April, the regions which registered the largest number of new mortgages on homes were Andalucía (4,442), Catalonia (4,030) and Madrid (3,665), while the regions with the highest year-on-year increases in the number of home mortgages constituted were Cantabria (74.7%), Castilla-La Mancha (66.7%) and Extremadura (52.6%). The only decline recorded was for the Canary Islands (-0.6%). Moreover, according to the Prompt and reliable service, Institute’s data, the regions where most capital was no job too small. loaned for the constitution Full bathrooms or just makeovers of home mortgages in April and handyman service. were Madrid (575.1 million euros), Catalonia (489.3 24 hour call out million) and Andalucía Boilers: 80 litre fully installed from 160€ (410.5 million). The bright side of Brexit: The 'good news' for Brits in Spain

Britain has voted to leave the European Union, and many if not most British expats in Spain are deeply concerned. But there are a few silver linings... perhaps. Readers fed up with all the negativity have asked us to try and put some positive spin on the result of the Brexit referendum and the economic fall out, which began even before the results came in. It has not been easy, but we've had a go at looking on the bright side of Brexit for Brits in Spain. Cheaper visits back home With the value of the pound falling surely and swiftly since Friday morning - on Tuesday it was worth around €1.20 - life in Spain for those Britons who rely on income from back home will be more expensive. But on the flip side, it will certainly make trips home to see the family in Britain a little cheaper. Especially if you earn a wage in euros but spend in pounds. We've been here before The fall in the pound is indeed worrying and Brits have told The Local they have already seen the value of their pensions cut. But the one thing to remember is that we've been here before. "Back in 2008 we saw almost parity between the euro and the pound so at the moment it’s not too disastrous," Victoria Lewis, a financial advisor said "Most people are not panicking yet," she said. Cate Carnduff from Herman de Graaf estate agents added: "The pound is always going up and down and around. We nearly had parity a few years ago and we didn't go out of business.” Get rich selling your house But as well as those who pile through the arrival gates each year, there are hundreds if not thousands who return to Britain. For people who already own property in Spain, now might just be the time to put it on the market, sell up and

head home. Thanks to the exchange rate you're going to be able to get more for your money back home. And it might even get better if you wait a little bit. "Given the thrashing of the exchange rates it is a good time to sell your house and buy sterling," said Maura Hillen, a town councillor in Albox representing expats. And it's not all bad news for buyers While it may become a good market for leavers (those heading out of Spain, not those who voted Out) the reality is that it's still not too bad for buyers either. While estate agents are clearly concerned, they say there are still many great deals out there for those looking to sell up in the UK and buy a house in Spain. “The Brits buy in Spain for the wonderful climate and bohemian lifestyle. That hasn’t changed and houses in Spain will always have a pull for the British purchaser,” a spokesman for property website Kyero told The Local. “There was a very healthy market for Spanish property before Spain joined the Eurozone and there'll still be a thriving market once Britain leaves. Property prices in Spain remain relatively low, and this is still an excellent time to make a shrewd investment in the Spanish property market.” Nothing will happen for a while, if ever?

One thing that is certain is that nothing will happen for a while. And some, in fact many are suggesting that it will become so complicated for the UK to leave the EU that it might never happen. In the meantime Simon Manley, British Ambassador in Madrid sent a message of calm to expats in Spain. “The truth is that, right now, nothing has changed. You can still live here, work here, just as you did before.” Europe might actually become stronger Of course, no one knows what will happen with the EU now that the UK has voted to leave. But its leaders, at least those from France, Germany and Italy, are promising "a new impulse" to the EU now that the "enfant terrible" has it made it clear it wants a divorce. It may be that the British public's rejection of the EU, may force Europe to carry out the many necessary reforms to prevent other countries from following suit. And without Britain blocking the path, it may actually be possible to bring Europe closer together politically, which is what many economists believe is necessary. In short, Brexit could give the EU an almighty kick up the backside and force it to take steps to make its economy stronger and to make the voters feel less disconnected from the decision makers. It's a great time to become Spanish Let’s face it, Spaniards know how to enjoy life. Not only do they have an amazing climate and great food but they also enjoy the longest life expectancy in the world (after the Japanese). For those who've always dreamed of being one of them, this might be your chance. thelocal

Seven in Ten Spaniards Prefer Home Ownership Over Renting

According to the sociological study ‘Spaniards and their relationship with housing in 2015’ prepared by property portal, Fotocasa, six in ten Spaniards consider that housing prices have bottomed out and that they won’t fall further. The report, which looks at the real estate market with the aim of analysing how the economic crisis has influenced Spaniards’ attitude towards housing, notes that the above figure represents a clear difference compared with the previous edition of the report, when the majority of Spaniards felt that prices would continue falling. Other significant data from the report shows that, despite the renewed access to financing and the slowdown in the decline of housing prices, an increasing number of Spaniards are now opting to rent a home. In fact, according to the report, some 23.5% of Spaniards were living in rental homes in 2015, which is eight percentage points more than four years ago, when the figure was just 15%. However, although the rental market is growing, the report shows that despite the crisis, Spaniards still have a preference towards owning their own home, with seven out of every ten of those questioned saying that they consider in the long-term that buying a home is much more worthwhile than renting, regardless of the generation to which they belong. In addition, 47% of those currently living in a rented home said they would prefer to own their own home, and 60% share the opinion that living in rental housing is not a cost-effective option in the long run. Despite these views, the report shows that the option of renting a home is still gaining in popularity, above all among the younger generations, although these segments of the population also show a clear tendency towards purchasing a property in the future. One notable fact gleaned from the study is that, of all the Spaniards currently living in rental housing, some 56% of them say that they will more than likely buy a home in the future, and that they plan to do this, on average, within the next four years. This percentage rises to 63% among the younger generation, who consider living in rented accommodation as a temporary situation and show a greater intention to buy in the future, although they estimate they will make their purchase in around five years on average. kyero.com

Spanish Families Spend Nearly A Quarter of Budget on Housing

Spanish households spend an average of 23.58% of their annual family budget on their mortgage or home rental payments, according to a recent study by pisos.com, based on the latest family budget survey data from the National Statistics Institute. Specifically, according to Europa Press, the cost of renting a home requires an average of 25.71% of the household budget, compared with the average cost of paying a mortgage, which stands at 21.46 of the budget. The regions where home rental costs account for a greater part of the household budget are the Basque Country (34.36%), Madrid (35.89%) the Balearic Islands (30.45%) and Valencia (30.34%), while the regions with the most affordable rental prices are Castilla La Mancha (21.09%), Galicia (21.34%), Navarre (21.70%) and Cantabria (22.09%). With regard to homeowners, the regions where a higher proportion of the household budget is required for mortgage payments are the Basque Country (31.77%), the Balearic Islands (27.22%), Madrid (24.43%) and Cantabria (23.64%), while in contrast, the most economical regions are Castilla La Mancha (14.95%), Navarre (16.53%), Murcia (16.97%) and Aragón (17.94%). kyero.com

Spanish banks must refund homebuyers’ deposits on unfinished developments

A ruling by the Supreme Court in Spain says Spanish banks that held deposits for property that was never built are to be held to account. Around 100,000 people in the UK are thought to have paid big sums towards such properties in Spain but these were lost when several developers went bust in the wake of 2008’s financial crisis. Estimates for how much British buyers could claim are around £4bn. Prior to the economic crisis that hit Europe, many people in Spain purchased properties off-plan where the developments were not yet built and handed the developer advanced payments on the purchase price, which were paid into accounts set up in banks. When the property bubble burst, many of these projects never materialised and millions of euros have been trapped in the accounts since, in order to minimise the cost of the developments, it was common practice for banks to grant loans without requiring guarantees or insurance. Traditionally, it was considered that only the insolvent developers that had failed to complete the developments were liable to refund the deposits to the homebuyers with no liability for the bank in which the deposits advances were paid. Spanish law applicable at the time forced banks to supervise the funds advanced by homebuyers to the developers, it being their responsibility to ensure that the deposits were paid into special accounts at the bank in question, and separated from the developer’s other accounts. Consequently, the Supreme Court held: “In home salepurchase transactions governed by Law 57/1968, credit institutions accepting homebuyers’ deposits into a developer’s account without requiring that a special account be opened and the relevant guarantee produced, shall be liable to homebuyers for the entire amount advanced by the homebuyers and deposited in the account or accounts the developer has opened at said institution”. This means that, in the event that the developer becomes insolvent, buyers who have paid deposits may claim back the amounts deposited in the bank, rather than wait until the end

of the insolvency process, when in any case they rarely recoup the advances paid to the developers. The banks are also liable to repay legally accrued interests since the first deposit was paid. The Supreme Court is unequivocal in both of its rulings, highlighting that banks cannot overlook their duty of special protection and allege that they were unaware of the nature of these advances, since in both cases it was patently clear that the amounts deposited were advances to the developer on the sale price of the home; hence, although these amounts did not feature in special accounts separated from the developer’s other accounts, the banks did know what the deposits were and what their purpose was. Accordingly, the Supreme Court ruled that the banks cannot be considered to be third parties unconnected with the relationship between buyer and seller, but rather they have a duty to supervise the developer to whom they granted the loan; in other words, they have the duty to ensure that the developer has contracted a guarantee or insurance. Consequently, the Supreme Court denied that the banks were unconnected third parties, as they alleged, but held that, precisely because the bank knew or should have known that the buyers were paying advances into an account, it was legally bound to open a special, separate, properly insured account, and by not doing so it incurred in the specific liability indicated above. http://www.lexology.com

Top 10 Beaches in Costa Blanca

July 2016

As we hear the name ‘Costa Blanca’ (White Coast), we evoke hundreds of kilometers of beautiful sunny beaches bathed by crystal-clear waters. And we are right. Costa Blanca stretches along 244 kilometers in the province of Alicante and some of its beaches are among the best in Spain.

But, which beaches are the best?

Among such beauty, it is not an easy task to choose which the winners are. Let´s have a look at those breath-taking places 1. LA GRANADELLA, JAVEA. This beautiful beach is famous for its incredible variety of colours. The green and brown colours of its vegetation contrast with its turquoise blue waters and the golden colours of its shore. Its waters are of very high quality and the protection of the surrounding cliffs and cape La Nao make them really still and perfect for swimming. La Granadella takes its name from an eighteenthcentury fortress built to protect the little coastal villages from pirates’ attacks. You can still visit the ruins of this fortress walking a path that comes right on the beach. La Granadella is a paradise for diving practitioners for the large number of marine species that can be found there. Divers can also explore Isla del Descubridor (Discoverer Island) south of Cape La Nao, famous for its seafloor and flocks of cormorants. It is said that this island takes its name from a member of Christopher Columbus’ crew. You can also find some good restaurants a few meters from the shore. They bring the taste of sea to the dining table through their specialties like seafood paella and fideuà. 2. ARENAL-BOL, CALPE. With a length of 1200 mts. and a width of 50 mts., Arenal-Bol is one of the most astonishing beaches in Costa Blanca. Its fine golden sand dotted with palm trees is one of the main attractions for the thousands of tourists and locals who enjoy this beach every year. You can enjoy the impressive view of Peñon de Ifach, a calcareous rock rising from the sea to a height of 332 m which is the symbol of Costa Blanca. Arenal-Bol possesses a “Blue Flag”, maximum award that the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) gives to the best beaches. Blue Flag criteria include standards for water quality, safety, environmental education and information. 3. LES DEVESES, DENIA. Bordering the province of Valencia we find Les Deveses beach in Denia. Its outstanding length, 4.870 mts. and the strong winds in this area make Les Deveses a paradise for windsurfers and kite surfers. But you can enjoy Les Deveses in a different way. After a refreshing bath in its waters, a long stroll on its golden sand is a must. This walk can take you to the border of the natural park “Marjal de Pego-Oliva” and the estuary of the river Bullent, where eels are

fished in the traditional way. It is a good opportunity for you to taste the wonderful “All i pebre” a famous dish containing eels, garlic, peppers and potatoes. Its landscape is also highly appreciated by nature lovers because of its dunes and vegetation. After this long stroll you can have a refreshing beer in one of the “chiringuitos” (drinks stands) scattered along the beach. 4. EL PORTET, MORAIRA. El Portet (Little Harbour) is a small round beach that combines the beauty of sea and mountain. It is made of sand and stone and the slope of the seabed is very soft, so it is one the best places for swimming. Its promenade is famous for having the most delicious restaurants in Moraira where you can have your meal while you enjoy precious views of Peñón de Ifach and Cap d’Or (Golden Cape). It is very recommendable that you visit the watchtower in Cape d’Or, an eleven meters high tower built in the XVI century in Renaissance style. 5. PORTITXOL, JAVEA. Also known as La Barraca (typical Valencian house similar to a Cabin), this splendid beach is one of the best options if you want to delight with nature, especially if you practice snorkel. A soft slope seabed and transparent waters allow you to discover many marine species. If you still want more, you can go to Isla Portitxol, an islet located 183 mts. from the shore. There you can find different natural species as well as Roman archaeological remains. 6. EL MORAIG, BENITATXELL. Surrounded by cliffs, El Moraig beach is one of a kind. Its still waters are perfect if you want a relaxed swim. But that isn’t all. Fresh water comes from Cova dels Arcs (Cave of the Archs) a beautiful cave located in the cliffs with a subterranean river. Fresh water combined with seawater produces a mesmerizing pattern of blue and green colours. Marveled at this view, many people have come to live in this area. This combination of waters also produces thermal variations, very similar to the ones in a spa. So this is your beach if you want to relax. 7. LA FOSSA, CALPE. It is located in the surroundings of Calpe salt mines and its sand is the whitest and finest in Costa Blanca. You can walk this beach up and down watching flamingos and seagulls in the sky. Despite its big residential

offer, this beach keeps its great biodiversity intact. You can also enjoy an excellent promenade with a full range of restaurants, pubs, ice-cream parlours and shops. And, have you ever thought of watching a good movie while you feel the sea breeze? In summer it is possible with ‘Cinemar’ an outdoor cinema right on La Fossa beach. 8. BAÑOS DE LA REINA, EL CAMPELLO. Baños de la reina (Queen’s baths) is a safe bet for nature and history lovers since this beach contains remains of a Roman fish farm. It was built in the rocks and it has a ingenious system of interconnected pools. You can just relax floating in one of these pools or snorkel to observe the different species that live on the sea floor. Remains of ancient houses, hot springs and little temples can also be seen in this remarkable spot. This ancient settlement also shows vestiges from the Bronze Age and the Iberian period. Baños de la reina is an archaeological site of incalculable value and the proof of how El Campello´s coasts were thousands of years ago. 9. LA FUSTERA , BENISSA This “Blue Flag” awarded beach is the most crowded in Benissa, and it is not for nothing. Its sand is white and fine and allows the practice of physical activity. The beach is equipped with games for kids and beachvolley nets. Disabled people can use an amphibious chair service during the months of July and August. Its waters are very clean and they let you see a rocky seabed with majestic meadows of Posidonia Oceanica (sea-grass). You can also see lots of young fish of various species. If you feel like walking you can go for a GR (Great Route) that goes along the coast at one of the most beautiful landscapes in Costa Blanca. 10. CABO ROIG, ORIHUELA. Cabo Roig (Red Cape) is a small gorgeous beach sheltered by a marina with some dozens of recreational boats. You can practice a wide range of water-sports there, from sailing to windsurfing. The Riverside Holiday Village, Alqueria (Part two) The telephone in the Oficina de keep below Air Traffic Control radar. The

Turismo never stopped ringing, well it rang four times in the last week, in itself a record. The advertising campaign had certainly paid off. Over one hundred places out of the two hundred available at the Riverside Holiday Village booked. The consultant Alvaro Spineto had advised them to use a fraudulent approach to their advertising. Promise them everything but get them here. Then get their cash before they realise that as a holiday resort it ranks very close to a wet weekend in Chernobyl. Anselmo Adamso, the village photographer got the interesting commission to photograph the young ladies of the village, perhaps the only viable asset Alqueria has. They posed with lascivious grins and very little else. Anselmo Adamso also had a lascivious grin. The session went on longer than anticipated and the last dozen shots were not fit for publication. Adamso kept these for his own uses however. The charter-flight operated by Spanish Peninsular Logistical Air Transport or SPLAT which they have blazoned across the fuselage in bright red lettering was booked and filling fast. Their only aircraft is rather old but they are able to operate in European airspace provided it can

Riverside Holiday Village itself was as ready as it was going to be. Accommodation for two hundred, two dining halls, a games room and twenty bars. The philosophy being, if they drink enough they will lose all feeling in their lower limbs and won’t notice their surroundings. The only problematic area was the Río Verde. Billed as a swimmers’ paradise, it was in fact lethal. The strange mutant fish were capable of carrying off anyone under seven and the algae caused an aggressive fungal growth which hasn’t as yet been categorised by the World Health Organisation. A powerful poison had been introduced into the water but the river life seemed to thrive on it. The bizarre assortment of waterborne creatures are now even more robust. Everything has to be ready as today is the Grand Opening of the Riverside Holiday Village, Alqueria. The charter flight had landed safely at Almería Airport, a fact duly celebrated in the airline’s office. A fleet of four coaches approached the Comino de Alqueria crossed the old stone and drove into the resort. The disembarked visitors stared in disbelief at the ramshackle accommodation, the steaming malodorous river all surrounded by a black effervescing swamp. Events could have turned nasty if the holiday makers had had time to organise themselves and select a leader. Blythe sensing trouble spoke the only words guaranteed to pacify any British holiday maker. “Free beeah at the boozah bonny lads”. Will beer be enough? Are the holiday makers revolting? We will see.

LEGAL CORNER WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR

If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com - www.daviessolicitors.com MENTIONING A TRUST ON A SPANISH WILL IS ASKING FOR TROUBLE. SOMETIMES WHAT IS LEGALLY POSSIBLE AND WHAT IS PRACTICAL IS NOT THE SAME THING. THIS IS A GOOD EXAMPLE. Question: I had a Spanish will made for myself and my wife some time ago. We recently hired a solicitor to handle a conveyance and he has taken a look at the wills, which had been prepared two years ago, and told us they are no good and that we should make new ones. We are uncertain what to do. Our instructions to our original solicitor were to prepare the Spanish will in Spain exactly how we had prepared our English wills in UK. He said that since Directive 650/2012 this can be done. Answer: As my granny would always say: a little knowledge can cause a lot of damage. There is no doubt: the wills are dreadful and need to be changed. I doubt the person who prepared your will has ever dealt with probate in Spain. (I say this because any solicitor I know would tell you that your will is asking for trouble). The will essentially translates the English will you handed her and sets up a trust to protect your children versus your second wife. Even though Directive 650/2012 allows English law to be applied (by choice of the testator)

to how an estate is distributed in Spain, using institutions like trusts will cause endless problems and expenses for your heirs because Trusts are not understood in Spain the same way as in UK. So Certifications of English law (which are very expensive) will be required to help wind up the estate (by explaining the content of English law). To this add a lot of problems with Spanish Inheritance tax (remember Directive 650/2012 has no effect on the taxation of the estate). In Spain it is the beneficiary that pays inheritance tax not the estate. Descendants and spouse in Andalucía are exempt if they each receive less than 175,000€. In this case the trustee is a non-family member. As he has faculty to dispose of assets, the Spanish tax office could interpret that, as he is in control of the estate, he is the person that owes the tax and as a non-family member he will receive a large tax bill. (This could all be battled out but would be messy.) Conclusion: Keep things sensible and uncomplicated. In this case achieve what you want using methods that are common practice in Spain. Leave the life possession of your property to your wife and the residual value to your children. With the values you have sent me the estate will be exempt, probate will be simple and both your children and your wife will be fully protected as you asked for.

The Foibles of Henry Our present car, Henry Zachariah Smith, is a much posher and altogether more upper-class successor to Del, our previous car, and he likes his superiority to be known. He stands out in any car park by being Ivory, not just any old silver or white – how common are they?! And as for those lurid reds and blues, well, my dear, how COULD they! Henry is a car, and yet he insists that there is a matter of the protocol of approach and personal interaction. He eschews the common key, instead he has a card - should any harm or mishap occur to it then it is nearly cheaper to buy a whole new car than a whole new card! He likes to be approached boot first. When the card is in his parameter of consciousness he will open the boot. However, it takes several polite requests and button-pushing before he will condescend to open either of the front doors. Once having been granted permission to enter his hallowed interior, and pushed his Go button, he will start, (as long as he is not in gear!) But he won’t go anywhere until he is absolutely sure that you are fully informed of the status quo. He needs you to know that the back seatbelt are not fastened – there’s nobody in the back, Henry! ‘Well don’t say I didn’t tell you they were not fastened.’ ‘The airbags are on.’ ‘Yes, that’s how we want them.’ ‘One of my doors isn’t properly shut.’ ‘Which one?’ ‘Find out for yourself.’ I get out, check all doors including

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk the boot, get back in and engage reverse. Henry prefers forward, so we have a short, pursed-lip tussle until I get reverse. Henry retaliates by delaying displaying his magic photographic rear camera complete with pooping sounds until I have got to where I am going. Then it’s ‘You’ve not fully released my brake.’ OK, attended to. ‘One of my tyres feels a little flat.’ ‘Which one.’ ‘Find out for yourself. Do I have to do EVERYTHING for you?’ A trip to the airline detected about a gnat’s puff of air missing on the fourth tyre tested. His latest was ‘My key is running out.’ We took his key indoors, looked up his manual, all 274 pages of it, which are only available on-line and sought to discovered how to dismantle his key to remove the battery. It took ages. I’ll tell you another day, when we’ve both got time to kill!

Lighter News This stunning optical illusion which cleverly shows objects being reflected in a different shape baffled the internet. Engineering and artist Kokichi Sugihara created the installation which was named as a finalist in the 2016 Illusion of the Year contest. Six squares are placed in a front of a mirror but as they are lined up an entirely different shape is projected to the camera. The squares becomes a crate of six interjoined circles. When the mass of shapes are rotated, a different shape is then beamed back from the mirror. Since the video was posted on YouTube last week, more than 150,000 people have viewed the clip. One YouTube user quipped: “The only plausible scientific explanation is voodoo magic.” Another said simply: “My brain hurts.” A day later another video was posted by 3D printing company Make Anything titled ‘Ambiguous Cylinder Illusion/How It Works’ which explained the optical magic using a 3D printer and reverse engineering. It revealed one side of the mirror is shaped like a square and curved upwards. The other side is like a circle and sloped downwards. T h e s e different heights correct the fact that the sides are different, so it blends into either a circle or square when the true shape is right in between.

Toss the mixture together with your hands, then stir in 2 tablespoons of vinegar and about 3 times as much extra virgin olive oil. Taste and add a little more salt, pepper, vinegar or oil, if needed. The Mar Menor is a huge (135 square kilometres) salt-water lagoon, separated from the Mediterranean by the 24 kilometre long La Manga del Mar Menor (The Strip). The average depth of the Mar Menor is four metres and at its maximum it is seven metres which means that the seabed slopes very gradually and you have to get several hundred metres in before the water is of any depth. The Mar Menor’s salinity provides buoyancy so it is, supposedly, one of the safest places to swim in the world. The mineral-rich waters are said to have therapeutic effects and because of this the area has a significant spa tourism industry. The sludge in the salt pans is also credited with beneficial effects on

the health, so there are often dozens of mud people wallowing in it at any one time. Playa Paraiso beach on a summer weekend. The beach at Playa Paraiso is very popular, partly because it has road access right onto the beach. On summer weekends it will be packed with Spanish families, who move most of their house onto the beach. The sea is very shallow, with netted off areas to exclude watersports, fishing and jellyfish. The jellyfish are mainly harmless and much reduced in numbers from previous years, apart from the summer of 2006 when they were back with a vengeance. Playa Honda beach During the week the beach is quiet.

motoring N332 - Driving In Spain

Advice and information about driving in Spain.

The First Summer Traffic Flow Operation Started on July 1st

The Spanish road network is gearing up for the start of its busiest periods, as the first weekend of the summer holiday season which started last Friday. As usual, the busiest periods, and therefore the major traffic operations, are split into three main weekends. The most problematic areas are the roads leading directly to tourism hotspots, including much of the N-332 in areas such as Santa Pola, El Altet, Altea and Torrevieja. In order to ease congestion, most major road works will be suspended

and there will be restrictions on the movement of certain types of goods. Extra lanes will be created in the busiest areas and the Guardia Civil traffic police will be out in force to ensure the safe flow of vehicles. In addition, the road network will be supported by helicopters monitoring traffic, and the cameras situated on most roads. The advice, as always, is to try to avoid the busiest times, allow extra time for your journey, stay calm and adhere to the laws of the road at all times.

Ford has officially released a heritage version of the 2017 Ford GT.

The ’66 Heritage Edition Ford GT was created to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the company’s iconic 1-2-3 victory at Le Mans. The car pays tribute to drivers Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon and features a special Shadow Black exterior color finished in either gloss or matte finish. Final exterior styling tweaks include 20-inch forged aluminium wheels finished in a beautiful shade of gold satin with contrasting black lugnuts.

Interior changes include carbon fibre seats with Ebony leather upholstery and pillowed inserts. Additional interior tweaks include matte carbon fibre trim and an individually-numbered plaque. Special seat belts with blue webbing are also featured as a throwback to those used in the 1966 race winning car.

Things are Not Always What They Seem

W h e n officers from the Guardia Civil thought they were about to file a typical complaint of a driver of a passenger car diving in a restricted lane, they became surprised by what they found whilst processing the complaint. The vehicle was travelling on the A6 in the direction of Madrid in a lane which can only be occupied by vehicles carrying more than one person, an invention aimed at reducing congestion by encouraging car sharing. However, one of the officers monitoring the lane observed what was considered an unusual sight for a summer´s evening. The passenger,

apparently a child, was wearing a winter coat, hat and headphones. Whereas the first instinct might have been to question whether the child was allowed to sit in the front seat, upon closer inspection, it soon became clear to the officer that the passenger in the car was not human, but was rather a life-sized doll which was sat in the passenger seat. Although having dolls in the car can sometimes be used as a deterrent to give confidence to more vulnerable and nervous drivers, the only conclusion that could be drawn from this incident is that the driver was hoping to exploit the lane restrictions by pretending to have a real human passenger in the car with him.

Jeremy Clarkson Reveals New Logo for The Grand Tour

While the former Top Gear trio’s new Amazon show may still be many months away from hitting the digital airwaves, that hasn’t stopped Jeremy Clarkson from releasing the first official image of the show’s new logo. The move to release the logo in an official capacity was likely precipitated by an online leak of the logo’s trademark filing last week. The logo was first leaked by Reddit users on the subreddit dedicated to The Grand Tour. The logo for The Grand Tour has received overall positive reviews, with many citing the fact that they

like the retro 80s style vibe that it represents. As always, the release of the logo has reignited internet rumours that the name The Grand Tour (TGT) really refers to Top Gear Two or some other such slight towards the trios former show. We’ll leave the rumours and speculation up to the internet. For us, we love the logo and can’t wait for The Grand Tour to premiere this fall on Amazon Prime. You could say it will be the biggest premiere…. in the world! http://gtspirit.com

Aston Martin Posts $172 Million Loss in 2015

Aston Martin has released their financial statements for fiscal year 2015. For fiscal year 2015, the British sports car manufacturer posted a pre-tax loss of $172.03 million. The loss marks the fifth consecutive year that the company has posted a financial loss and failed to make a profit. Book Review

The Dressmaker by Kate Alcott

www.carolnaylor.blogspot.com - www.carolesleynaylor.wordpress.com - naylorcl@hotmail.es

The ship, bow first, was slowly sinking into the water. People began tumbling like broken dolls from the decks, flopping, flailing into the sea. There was a huge cracking sound-and then the Titanic disappeared. Kate Alcott, a pseudonym for Patricia O’Brien, used transcripts of the US Senate hearings over the sinking of the Titanic in April 1912. Some of the characters are based on real characters who either survived the sinking such as the Duff Gordons and Margaret Brown as well as Senate William Alden Smith who presided over the hearings, otherwise Alcott admits to this being a work of fiction with the inclusion of factual evidence. I would highly recommend this book. Gripping from start to finish and I mean that! Tess Collins is the kind of heroine I admire and strongly approve of. She comes from modest roots, a large family struggling to make ends meet. Her father is critical and a man of the time, denying equal rights to women. Tess is constantly haunted by his oppressive and deprecating tones: You’re a farm girl, do your job, keep your head down and don’t put on airs. He was under the impression that she would ruin her life through defiance. Thankfully, Tess is a stubborn lady and is determined to make her life better not wreck it. She proves to be a good role model just like her mother: look for opportunity. Keep your head up, not down. Don’t settle for safety. Push forward-you are not foolish to try. What a far cry from her father’s damning thoughts: Watch out, foolish girl. Tess feels ashamed of working as a servant, an image of servitude when she is duped into accepting work in Cherbourg. She was a good seamstress and we see evidence of this when she starts working for the indomitable Lady Gordon Duff, a famous dress designer, the person she most admired in the world. Like many others, Tess is on the cusp of a new life filled with immense possibilities, a dream come true, a wonderful fantasy. Sailing on the Titanic with the famous and wealthy. Two infatuated men, one a rich American businessman, Jack Bremerton, the other a talented member of the crew, Jim Bonney who sweep her off her feet. Wonderful and then…the jolt, the slight bump followed by a sudden silence and the sadly ironical remark: We bumped into an iceberg but all is well. Bumping, scrambling, shouting. Suddenly there was an acrid, sweaty smell of human fear in the salt air. Children wailing. Panic everywhere. Desperation. Followed by the horrors that have been well-documented over the years. That this ruined people’s lives is an understatement and I mean for those who were lucky enough to survive. We are told that 706 survived out of a

passenger list of 2,223 and that out of these 60% of the first-class passengers survived, most of them women. In steerage, it was 25%. In reality, the Duff Gordons and their secretary escaped in a lifeboat that could have held 40-50 people instead of 12. In The Dressmaker Alcott explores how the couple were vilified by the press and people in both the USA and the UK. Lady Duff Gordon is subpoenaed to give a statement of what happened in Lifeboat One, contradicting Jim Bonney’s statement. There were crimes against humanity, moral crimes, tales of bribery and refusals to fill the boat and look for survivors. Marrying into the titled class. Gave her licence to be cold about people’s lives. And this is when Tess has to grow up, think for herself and decide on what she really wants out of life. Should she stand up, challenge and do what she wants to do OR should she be careful, be loyal and challenge nothing? Can she remain with her ideal, continue to admire and respect her after learning how self-absorbed, selfish and a bit careless the woman is? People choose whatever they want to believe and declare it true. What is the truth? Will anyone accept any liability for so many loss of lives? Our poor heroine is filled with so much uncertainty. How could she be sure of anything anymore? She has crucial decisions to make over her future with Lady Duff Gordon and her love life. Interestingly, her mother’s advice and her own common sense are pivotal in her decision making. She certainly is true to herself and full of hope not despair. She would be strong and not always too careful, not settle for a smaller life, and face what was true. As she walked through the streets of New York she felt strangely serene she was just a servant girl from Cherbourg without a job but she had a life and a future. That was important. Jack Bremerton called her extraordinary as a character and I would endorse this. She is the kind of person one would feel immense pride and joy to be with and I finalise by repeating what a role model she would make for women around the world today. I rest my case. San Miguel Golf Society at Saurines de la Torre, June 29th, 2016. President’s Trophy Final Round.

A little over a year since SMGS last played Saurines during its inaugural visit there, and for several the site remains difficult to find. A name change between the course as identified when booking and as announced at its entrance, coupled with the lack of sign posting from nearby Balsicas doesn’t help. Satnavs appear to be confused as well. Eventually 44 members and 3 guests did get there, with the former playing in the final round of this season’s President’s Trophy, in addition to a stableford competition (same formats). After some early confusion over buggy keys, with fewer keys than it appeared there were buggies, or perhaps some forgetful members, all finally got away on the first. Finding a course very much depopulated apart from ourselves, in very good condition generally, but with very slow greens clearly recovering from recent hollow tining etc. (for which the club apologised prior to us starting), several tees being brought forward and good weather, some fine returns were expected. This was indeed the case, with 36 members breaking 30 points (even higher than the 78% who attained it last year when results were considered very good). Of those Keith Stevenson and Alan MacDonald posted splendid cards of 40 points to win their categories, only pipped overall by youngster Joost Boelhouwer with an even more excellent 41 to take Gold. To win the President’s Trophy you need three good returns from 5, and Alan’s 40 brought him up on the rails to compete with long time front runner Tony Smale. At the time of writing a Steward’s inquiry is in session to determine the final standings. Keep posted!! The day’s Stableford results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 5th Chris Hamblett (33 on CB), 4th Ron Stenhouse (33 on CB), 3rd Brian Butler (34), 2nd Mary Cleary (39) and 1st, with 40 points and once again in the prizes, SMGS Treasurer Keith Stevenson. Silver Category: 5th Glen Rapley (37 on CB), 4th William Fenn (37 on CB), 3rd Alan Gilbert (38), 2nd Hugh Reilly (39), and 1st, with a return to form, Alan MacDonald with 40 points. Gold Category: 5th John Osborne (37 on CB), 4th Steve Higgins (37 on CB), 3rd Theo Boelhouwer (38), 2nd Tony Smale (39), and 1st, with the day’s best score of 41 points, our youngest member Joost Boelhouwer. The Abacus was won by Norman Padmore. Best visitor prize went to Peter Girenas with a superb 44 points. Nearest the pins (open to all) on the par 3’s were won by Peter Girenas (6), Mary Cleary (10), Barry Roehrig (14) and Robin Eastman (18). Our thanks go to the staff at Saurines de la Torre for their contribution to an enjoyable day. Next week we will be at Villamartin. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Barry Roehrig a call on 966 731 033 to find out more about the society and its weekly golf get-togethers.

@ Font Del Llop Golf Resort Wednesday 22nd June 2016 PERFECT GOLFING CONDITIONS it’s June and it’s a hot one. Now that’s the real reason we moved to play our golf on the Costa Blanca. Probably the last outing before the Mad Dogs and Englishmen weather. With two players calling off we only managed 18 players for this outing, we all descended upon Font Del Llop bright and early and it was down to business. The course was immaculate as it has been throughout the year, the greens having just undergone a hollow tinning and in great condition the 1st cut had been cut back a little more, albeit it still managed to grab (and keep) a few players golf balls. With ideal weather conditions, sun shining and no wind it was destined to produce some good scores... However, the wind did increase and was welcome as it cooled us down. After the outing we returned to our clubhouse The Galleon Bar, Plaza Blanca, Quesada where Tracey & Steve served up a much welcomed Salad, thoroughly enjoyed by all. A big thanks to Tracey for donating the Vino for the NTP’s we covered all 5 of the par 3 NTP’s. Winners of the Day :

France scored five to bring a brutal end to the Iceland fairytale and set up an intriguing Euro 2016 semi-final against world champions Germany in Marseille on Thursday. There was almost a sense of disbelief around the Stade de France at the break as the host nation walked off with a 4-0 advantage, two of the goals coming in the closing minutes of the half.

Olivier Giroud’s low strike and Paul Pogba’s powerful header from a corner had settled early French nerves and put their side in control. Dimitri Payet scored his third goal of an increasingly memorable tournament for the West Ham playmaker with a precise low strike from 20 yards that skidded across the greasy surface before Antoine Griezmann deftly lifted the ball over Iceland goalkeeper Hannes Halldorsson. After the restart Kolbeinn Sigthorsson stabbed home at the near post from Gylfi Sigurdsson’s cross as Iceland refused to give in before France restored their four-goal advantage when Giroud headed in a free-kick. Still, there was more to cheer for the excellent Iceland fans when Birkir Bjarnason headed a second for his side in the final stages of what has been a remarkable tournament debut for their team.

Winner : John King 33 points Runner-up : Tony Stead 32 points Lowest H/Cap 3rd Place : Dave Smith 32points Best Guest : Robert Lamb 37 points (and proud owner of a new handicap) Nearest the Pins : 3rd Terry Sharley, 8th Robert Lamb, 12th Graham Pattenden 16th Robert Lamb, 17th Tony Stead.

Didier Deschamps’ side had only conceded twice in the tournament before meeting Iceland - both penalties - but they had not scored in the opening half of a match and only really shown in flashes that they can reproduce on the pitch the ability they appear to have on paper. That changed at a wet but atmospheric Stade de France on Sunday. Griezmann had not scored in 648 minutes of football for France at this ground but he ended that with his composed, delicate finish.

Two’s Sweep :Dave Smith & Alec Aspden Football Card : Dave Smith Thanks all for a great day, next outing Wednesday 27th July @ Lo Romero, reserve list open. In some ways the goal was everything that was best about France; a patient 14-pass move that ended with a moment of invention to open up the opposition. A raking ball forward was superbly dummied by Giroud, completely bamboozling the Iceland defence and giving Griezmann a clear run at goal. The goal took Griezmann to four in the tournament and he is now the highest scorer at Euro 2016, with Payet and Giroud among several players one behind. But even though France were very comfortable winners, it was far from a flawless performance. Iceland created several decent chances - Jon Dadi Bodvarsson shot over from a good position in the first half and Hugo Lloris made a brilliant save to stop a Sverrir Ingason header after the restart - in addition to their two goals.

After defeating the Republic of Ireland and Iceland in the knockout stages, France will face a very different challenge against a German side with a lot more attacking capability. Bbc.com

24 members and guests made the short journey down the AP7 to what appears to be this “easy” golf course! Of course that is if the wind isn’t blowing a howler as it was today. From the scores it was apparently clear that our Silver category didn’t find it easy. It needed 21 pts. from Colin Marsden to secure 3rd place, just 3 pts. more secured 2nd Place for Alex Goslan and 1st place was won by Sandra Twentyman with just 27 pts. The Gold category did score better; Hans Arvesen took 3rd place with 30 pts. on higher handicap, 2nd place went to Gary Turner with the same 30 pts. but with the best score of the day was Vernon Brown with 39 pts. which included holing a bunker shot for par on the 4th and then on the next hole (par 5) chipped in for “eagle” from 30m, but we won’t mention the pink ball that he played on the first par 3 that he left woefully short for a birdie 2 ! The “2’s” pot wasn’t won today so €15 will be carried over o next week’s competition at Campoamor. N.T.P. competition results; Hole 2 Patrick Wouters, Hole 7 Alan Rickers, hole 11 NADA, hole 13 Vernon Brown. The N.T.P. prizes were donated by Patrick Wouters and wife Ria. Patrick also had the best visitor’s score of 36 pts. Photo; Gold category winners. Round two of the league took place last Saturday morning at Alicante Golf. With 112 players participating in the two divisions we had a shot gun start at 9.30. Overall comments were positive regarding the shot gun method as we got to meet more of the players in the two leagues. We will be using this method where ever possible. The Levante division is taking on a familiar look with The Tigers the early pace setters followed closely by the Falcons one point behind. There are four teams on two points San Miguel Golf Society, Javea Singles, Javea Parejas and Bonalba European team. The Nomads have a point and then the Ba Bas. In the second division, Poniente there are two early contenders for the title play-off in Las Colinas, with Sportsman Golf Society and El Vallle Golf Society both winning their first two outings on four points. They are closely followed by the Novices and Cream of the Celts on two points. With Magnificent 7 and the Motley Crew both waiting to record their first points. The next round of games will be at Alenda Golf with a 9.30 shot gun start. If players need buggies can they please book at the club. We have a knock out tournament starting on the 9th of July and currently have 14 teams, we have space for two more teams and if you are interested please contact johnobrienalicantemail.com or 615466398 or call the federation in Valencia. All these games cost 25 euro walking.

10 trophies for the 6 Club Natacion Torrevieja swimmers

Recently Torrevieja hosted the “VX City of Torrevieja Traversia” where 160 swimmers of all ages came together to compete in a 2,250m sea swim. After the brilliant sunshine of the previous weeks the competitors arrived at Playa de Los Locas, Torrevieja, on a dull and windy Sunday morning. The sea looked less than inviting over the grey skies and the water felt cold. However all competitors went off at a fine speed and struggling with waves that hid the marker buoys all swimmers finished their race at Playa del Cura, Paseo Juan Aparicio, about 35 minutes later. Club Natacion Torrevieja had six swimmers entered into the competition and all 6 made their club proud. First to finish for the team was Zoe Connolly, the first female of the competition to finish and the 4th swimmer to finish overall with a time of 33:27. This placed her 1st in category Junior Female and 1st in the female local swimmers competition. Followed directly after her, being placed 6th overall, was coteam mate and friend Piroska Rideg, coming second in the Junior Female category and 2nd in the local female competition. Piroska’s time 34:05. To finish an outstand set of results Skye Burns fellow team mate and

EL RASO GOLF SOCIETY – CAPTAIN’S DAY

best friend came in 3rd in the Female Junior category and 3rd in the local females category, Skye's time 35:55. Skye finished as the 18th fastest swimmer in the competition. What makes this such an impressive win is three best friend, in the top three positions, swimming in an age category far older than their ages. Nobody could have guessed these three friend could achieve so much together. Well done girls! And not to be “out swam” the only male member of Club Natacion Torrevieja team, Yuriy Lymar, matched the girls results finishing first in the Male Senior category and 1st in the local male category, with a time just behind Piroska of 34:09, placing him 6th of the 160 swimmers. Then the two older swimmers of the club kept up the winning streak with Vicki Connolly, being the oldest of her category, placed 2nd in the Female Masters B group with a time of 37:10 and finishing 25th of the 160 swimmers. Fellow team mate and friend, Beth Altabas, then followed placed 1st in the Female Masters D category with a time of 42:52 and 60th of the 160 swimmers. So a total of 10 trophies for Torrevieja 6 swimmers. Congratulations to all.

TORREVIEJA CC 68 for 10 SPORTING ALFAS 71 for 4

Torrevieja welcomed Sporting Alfas 2nd team to the estadio de deportes in their latest league game. Sitting at the top of the table, the visitors were looking to cement their league position whilst Torrevieja were looking to get back on the winning streak after a defeat against Madrid. Winning the toss, Torrevieja decided to bat and soon lost their first wicket K Wood falling to J Ahmed. The following batsman fared little better and apart from a stubborn innings of 11 from junior Taylor Braisher, Torrevieja were all out for 68, with 5 batsmen failing to score. J Ahmed ( 5 overs 3 for 20 ) W Ashraf ( 2 overs 3 for 1 ) and J Perman ( 4 overs 2 for 5 ) did the damage for Alfas.

This year’s Captain’s Day, Individual Stableford was held on Friday 24 June at our home course La Marquesa Golf Club. A good turnout of 28 players enjoyed excellent playing conditions, both with regard to the weather and the superb condition of the course. Many thanks go to Mick the Grip, Manolo Restaurant, Vivyan Hair Salon, Quesada Country Club, The Clubhouse, Studio 1 Hair and Beauty and the Olde 9th for their support. Following the game players were invited back to the Olde 9th for a buffet and refreshments, where presentations took place. With a mind set of “ anything they can , we can do “ Torrevieja set about their task with great spirit, resulting in a great run out in the first over. A second wicket fell in the 2nd over and Torrevieja were beginning to believe they could win. Alfas batsmen, T Brown ( 18 ) and K Perman (33 no ) were in no mood to go down without a fight and after only 15 overs they pushed the total over the winning line. Young Ciaran Guichard bowled as well as ever taking 2 for 24 in 7 overs. The game was played in good spirit and Torrevieja are looking forward to the return game July.
