The Spanish government said it has approved a royal decree that will give banks three months to reach settlements with customers who were sold mortgages with interest rate floors that were not clearly explained. The royal decree - a law fast-tracked through Parliament - aims to allow customers that were sold these mortgages to agree some form of compensation with their banks free of charge. It also aims to prevent a wave of lawsuits against the banks. These home loans were sold with an interest rate that could not fall below a certain level, which meant customers missed out when rates dropped below that minimum. In December, the European Court of Justice said Spanish banks must

compensate customers who took out these mortgages, overturning a Spanish court ruling that had put a cap on what banks should pay. The Bank of Spain has estimated the cost to the banks at 4 billion euros. The banks must now contact customers to offer them a settlement and have one month to set the process in motion. If they come up with a compensation offer, customers have 15 days to accept. About 1.5 million customers who were sold those mortgages will still have the right to seek to get their money back in the courts, potentially creating a new legal headache for Spanish banks and hitting their bottom line. BBVA, Spain’s second largest bank, said in December the ECJ ruling
would knock its full-year earnings for 2016 by 404 million euros. BBVA executive chairman Francisco Gonzalez said in Davos on Thursday that the bank would proceed according to the new law but also said: “It is important to look at the big picture and preserve legal security.” A spokesman for BBVA said the bank would wait for the Spain’s Supreme Court interpretation of the ECJ ruling, expected in the following weeks or months, before deciding how to proceed. Banco Sabadell has said its mortgages were still valid as they had been presented clearly. Deutsche Bank analysts have estimated the bank could be liable for charges worth as much as 490 million euros.

Spain wants quick deal
Spain’s foreign minister has rejected the prospect of a “punitive” Brexit agreement that would hurt London, as the country pushes for UKEU talks to begin as soon as possible. Alfonso Dastis presented his country as sympathetic to many of Britain’s key demands, with reports saying that he agrees with London that trade deal negotiations should take place at the same time as exit talks. Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy declared Brexit to be a “serious threat”. “Without wanting to go into other considerations, I will only tell you that one in five tourists who come to Spain are
British, and close to 17 million Britons visited Spain last year... “I will also tell you that the United Kingdom is the first destination for Spanish companies’ investment and our third commercial partner.” More than 300,000 Britons officially reside in Spain, but estimates suggest the actual figure may be between 800,000 to a million. Rajoy also warned that the forthcoming elections in France and Germany, where Eurospectic parties will be looking to make a big splash, would be “decisive” in terms of how the bloc would proceed. “Spain... hopes that its two biggest partners will maintain their proEU vocation”.
ONE of the world’s toughest cycling races is coming back Andalucia this year. Almost one quarter of the brutal 3297.7km long La Vuelta will take place between August 30 and September 3 in the region, which was entirely missed off the contest’s route last year. Coin and Motril are among the starting locations for the five gruelling Andaluz stages, which will also pass through the cities of Malaga, Sevilla and Granada and the mountains The thrilling 21 stage race will this year start in Nimes in south France on August 19 before making its way down the eastern coast of Spain. It will hit Andalucia on August 30, when over 200 cyclists will ride from Lorca in Murcia to Almeria’s Calar Alto Observatorio in the 11th stage.

Modernise NEWS the train service Socialist Councillor Antonio Zapata will ask Orihuela council to demand that the Ministry for Development, Adif and Renfe prioritise modernisation of the Alicante-Murcia train service, which stops on the way in the Vega Baja. He reminded it is one of the busiest and most profitable lines but is starved of investment. He wants the Government of Spain to put up enough to electrify the lines currently used by diesel trains, which would be better for the environment and reduce the journey time from 70-75 minutes to just 40. “We deserve new trains and carriages,” he said, complaining that they have leaks, no heating or air conditioning, and problems with disabled access.
Action taken against Police
Torrevieja Town Hall has approved taking disciplinary action against four Local Police commanders after two convictions for repeated bullying of other officers, informed Councillor Fanny Serrano. She explained they are complying with the sentence of the Superior Court of the Valencian Community (TSJCV), which convicted the Town Hall for bullying by three council workers in the first case and by one in another. “Disciplinary proceedings will be started against these people, who are Local Police commanders, who according to the facts declared in the sentences were responsible for this repeated bullying at work suffered by the plaintiffs,” she said.

Government loses Supreme Court case
Theresa May needs the approval of Parliament to trigger the Brexit process, Britain’s most senior judges have ruled. The Supreme Court has decided that MPs must be given a vote on triggering Article 50, the formal mechanism for leaving
the European Union. The Prime Minister has said she intends to do this by the end of March. Although it is thought to be unlikely that the Government will lose a vote in Parliament, the Supreme Court’s decision, by an 8-3 majority,

Opposition party Cambiemos Orihuela has warned that a second property bubble is being created on the coast with plans to construct about 4,000 new homes in the short term in Cala Mosca and PAU-7. Councillor Marta Guillén said a modification to the PAU-7 project for 2,570 homes was

Trump Bows to Judges’ Orders President Donald Trump‘s Department of Homeland Security announced it would comply with a bevy of federal judges’ injunctions against portions of his executive order barring entry to people from seven Muslim-majority nations—but declared it would continue to press ahead with the rest of the White House fiats. The agency’s announcement came this afternoon after Brooklyn Judge Ann Donnelly issued a restraining order forbidding DHS’s Border
and Customs Enforcement arm from deporting any of the people held at John F. Kennedy Airport and at hubs nationwide approved to enter the country under President Barack Obama. Two federal jurists in Massachusetts enjoined the administration from detaining or expelling any arrival from Syria, Sudan, Somalia, Libya, Yemen, Iran or Iraq who was either a legal permanent resident of the U.S. or possessed a proper visa— while a federal judge in Virginia granted those detained access to legal
counsel. DHS’s promise of compliance was buried at the bottom of an otherwise petulant public statement. “The Department of Homeland Security will comply with judicial orders; faithfully enforce our immigration laws, and implement President Trump’s executive orders to ensure that those entering the United States do not pose a threat to our country or the American people,” the statement reads.
Popular Countries to relocate post-Brexit The Brexit vote in June last year has prompted a number of banks and companies to warn about job relocations from London. There’s also been a surge in passport applications for the Republic of Ireland. But, according to expat network InterNations, there are five clear winners with those
looking to relocate — and only one country is part of the European Union: Malta New Zealand Australia Canada Singapore The survey asked 14,300 expats, representing 174 nationalities and living in 191 countries or
territories, to rate 43 different aspects of life abroad on a scale of 1-7. From this, InterNations calculated the scores to get an overall average. Malta took poll position amongst British people. One third of the expat population there has British citizenship. New Zealand came in second with British people, which already
make up 21% of the expat population there, due to the work-life balance. Meanwhile Australia is touted as one of the better relocation destination for Brits with families. InterNations says “out of the English-speaking countries, New Zealand has the shortest fulltime work week with an average of 42.2 hours.”

What UK and Spanish benefits are available to Britons living in Spain
If you’re a British citizen or British subject with right of abode in the UK, you don’t need a visa to enter Spain. Other British nationals should confirm the current entry requirements with their nearest Spanish Embassy. A valid British passport must be held for entry to and exit from Spain. There is no minimum passport validity requirement but you should ensure that your passport is valid for the duration of your visit. This guide sets out essential information for British nationals residing in Spain, including British and Spanish pension and benefits entitlements, and vehicle and driving licence laws. State pensions The UK State Pension is
payable in Spain if you’ve paid enough UK National Insurance contributions to qualify and you meet other eligibility criteria. If you reach State Pension age on or after 6 April 2016 you can claim the new State Pension. If you reached State Pension age before 6 April 2016, you’ll get the State Pension under the old rules instead. Find out more about your State Pension if you live or wish to retire abroad. Where to apply for your UK State Pension You must be within 4 months of your State Pension age to make a claim. If you live in Spain but have only ever worked in the UK you will need to contact the International

Pension Centre in the UK. If you live in and last worked in Spain you should make your claim to the Instituto Nacional de la Seguridad Social (INSS) which is the Spanish pension authority. If you’ve worked in the UK and any other EEA country you should make your claim for your UK State Pension to the pension authority in the country you’re living in or in the country you last worked. If you’ve never worked in the country where you’re living, your host country will forward your claim to the one you last worked in. Entitlement to a Spanish retirement pension You may be entitled to a State Pension from any other countries you have
worked in as well as from the UK if you meet the eligibility criteria for each country. If you’ve worked in Spain you may be entitled to a Spanish State pension. To qualify for a Spanish State Pension you normally need to have worked and paid National Insurance contributions in Spain for at least one year, provided you have worked in other EEA countries](https://www. gov.uk/eu-eea) such as the UK for a total of 15 years. If you last worked in Spain you should make your claim for your Spanish and UK State pension from the Instituto Nacional de la Seguridad Social (INSS).
Taxation The tax system in Spain operates on the same basis as the tax system in the UK. In the UK, those who are resident for tax purposes are taxed on their worldwide income, regardless of the country in which it arises. Those who are not resident for tax purposes are taxed only on the income arising in the UK. A Double Taxation Convention between Spain and the UK operates to prevent income being taxed in both countries when a resident of one country has income arising from a source in the other country. The full text of the convention can be found on the HMRC website.
In the case of pensions for past Government service, double taxation is avoided by allocating an exclusive right to tax to the paying state. This means that in all cases where a UK Government Service pension is paid to a Spanish resident it will be taxable only in the UK, apart from where, exceptionally, it is paid to a Spanish national. HMRC maintain a list of the UK pensions that are classified as government pensions for the purposes of the Double Taxation Convention.

Importing Vehicles Importing your UKregistered vehicle from the UK to Spain If you spend longer than six months of the year in Spain with your UKregistered car, Spanish law says you must register your vehicle with the Spanish authorities. For information on how to do this (including how to change your licence plate) consult the Dirección General de Trafico . The RACE (Real Automóvil Club de España) also provides useful guidance about all
aspects of importing your vehicle. Please note that it is unlikely that you will be able to register right- hand drive vehicles such as vans and commercial vehicles. UK-registered vehicles being driven in Spain must comply with all UK requirements for road tax, M.O.T. and third party insurance covering the full time period the vehicle is used in Spain, up to the six- month limit. Vehicle import taxes Payment of the following
taxes (or acquisition of the relevant exemption certificate[s]) is required by the Dirección General de Tráfico when importing and registering your UK vehicle. TV NEWS: Not a lot to report in the world of developments so I thought we could have a look at the types of internet TV available. There are two main ways to get TV via the internet and each of these has many subsections ……… They are the Android type system and the pure IPTV system. Whilst not strictly true we can lump in with Android such things as The Now box and the Amazon fire stick – all these start from a base of “free” viewing of certain TV but they also all have “add ons” that will often incur ongoing charges. Generally there are ways to watch UK TV in them all but it does take a bit of searching and “computer” knowledge as often the source of broadcast will change almost daily and much of the possible content will block when they see you have a Spanish IP address. There are ways to get round this – rent a VPN which will give you an effective UK IP address but whilst there are some that work we have not had much success with them – slowing internet speed down, being very busy and not working at peak times and of course costing , in general , a monthly fee. Android and their type are fine – and cheap – if you are prepared to accept their limitations and frustrations – several clients have said they almost drove them to a straight jacket !!!! Pure IPTV boxes, as supplied by us ! are the real way to watch UK TV over the internet – no dish required. They are not restricted by IP address and are as easy to use as any satellite , FREESAT or SKY box ……… select a channel and watch it along with TV listings , catch up TV and often an independent Film / Box Set library. You do not have to be computer literate to operate them and they will be backed up by the supplier. Any problems ? just call us – not possible with the Android type – just how do
9
we get hold of that market trader ? !!!. Yes they carry a subscription but it need not be that big …….. Ours start at €0.69c per day for a full TV viewing pack. Remember there is no TV licence fee in Spain so why not consider your nominal subscription as a “licence” payment – pretty much the same as you would pay in UK to watch TV. The problem with any internet TV is that you MUST have a good internet supply. The speed of the internet is critical (4mbs for SD viewing and 8mbs for HD) but is by far not the only critical criteria – ping , consistency and the ability of the internet supply company to support internet TV – a technical development in its infancy and everyone in the business is continually striving to keep up with the technology. TV supply companies , such as RAINBOW SATELLITES , obviously can have their problems (any technical supply company will have occasional issues) but in general 90+% of viewing issues are related to the internet supply. The success of a TV system will depend on all the involved parties working together to provide a good TV viewing platform and that is where you will need an experienced established supply company – the man selling boxes on the market stall or from a small advert in the newspaper may look cheap but who will support the system and you when it goes wrong ? UK TV viewing in Spain – be it by satellite or internet - is not just a plug and watch situation but requires knowledge and ongoing support – choose your supplier carefully. New to Spain ? Get us to come and have a chat about the options and give you a demonstration before you buy – no charge. Death In Paradise Ep 5/8 Thursday 2 February 9.00pm-10.00pm BBC ONE The first episode of this two-part special sees the team leave the idyllic Caribbean Shores and head to London in pursuit of suspects connected to a murder committed on Saint Marie. When the captain of a boat, Tom Lewis, fails to return home after the night of a storm, Humphrey and the team conduct a search party. When they find Tom’s body on his boat a mile out to sea, the radar equipment proving that no other vessel came near the boat all night, all evidence points towards him being a tragic casualty of the storm. But Humphrey is convinced there’s more to it. Why would an experienced sailor sail out in the middle of a storm? As Tom and his partner have no connections to the island, apart from to the holidaymakers who chartered his boat for the week, Humphrey struggles to solve this apparently motiveless murder. The discovery of a stray cufflink provides the team with the vital lead they need, pointing them towards a banking company back in London. With Saint Marie’s police reputation on the line and with the Commissioner’s permission, Humphrey, Florence and Dwayne head to London, where they team up with DI Jack Mooney in order to track down the murderer. Meanwhile Dwayne comes face to face with his estranged father and Humphrey must come to terms with Martha’s recent departure from the island.
Tales from the Coast with Robson Green Episode: 1 of 4 Tue 31 Jan 2017 8.00pm - 9.00pm ITV Overview In the first episode, Robson travels to North Devon, a 90-mile stretch of coast that holds fond childhood memories for him. And it’s here that Robson starts his adventures by visiting the popular seaside resort of Ilfracombe, a town that stills attracts thousands of visitors every summer to experience the classic British day out by the sea. Robson says: “There are parts of North Devon that make you feel like you’re stepping back in time, so I’m hoping this journey will help me understand just how and why our love affair with the coast began.” He discovers that the demand of our Victorian ancestors to be beside the seaside was so great that they would often go to extraordinary lengths to access the best places to soak up the sun, including some of the areas privately-owned tidal pools, with the steep cliffs offering the perfect shelter for bathing. However, back then they could only be accessed by boat, so in the 1820s, hundreds of Welsh miners were given the task of carving a network of tunnels through the cliffs, to open the pools up to the public.

Why teeth grinding is a really unhealthy habit The act of grinding your teeth is usually a way of dealing with high levels of stress. However, some of us tend to do it even when we are unaware of it. Experts declared that most people who have this habit usually start grinding their teeth during sleep. In addition, it would seem that the act of repeatedly grinding those teeth can be unhealthy since it can irreparably damage your enamel. The doctors have observed that people who grind their teeth during sleep put too much pressure on the jaw muscles.
This means that you could damage your teeth during sleep and even fracture your jaw. Unfortunately, because this mostly occurs during the night, when half of our brain is asleep, there is little to be done, safe from taking a couple of precautions before hitting the sack. So, according to the doctors, if you think you have teeth grinding problem, you should definitely avoid caffeinated beverages and sweets before going to bed. This means no sodas, coffee, cappuccinos, and chocolate before nap time.

Public safety is being put at risk because the health service is not allowed to carry out checks on soaring numbers of nurses coming to work here from EU nations, watchdogs have warned. The Nursing and Midwifery Council urged ministers to use Brexit to close gaping loopholes in regulation, amid a tripling in the number of nurses coming to Britain from the Continent. The plea comes ahead of a Parliamentary inquiry, at which Jeremy Hunt will be questioned about the impact of Britain’s withdrawal from the EU. Regulators said the current system was unsafe, forcing watchdogs to automatically register nurses and midwives from Europe as safe to work, without any checks, even if they had not practised for decades. The regulator for doctors has issued a similar plea. In its submission to the inquiry, the General Medical Council (GMC) calls for rules on medics
to be rewritten, to close such loopholes for doctors coming here from Europe. “We would like to be able to check that doctors coming to practise here from Europe meet the same standards as those who qualify in the UK and outside Europe,” the GMC submission states. More than 30,000 doctors working in Britain received their training in other EU countries, the submission states – around one in 10 of all medics on the register. Proposals for a “Medical Licensing Assessment” which would hold all doctors to a common standard. The Health Secretary has been summoned amid warnings from Dr Sarah Wollaston, select committee chairman, that Brexit poses an “exceptional challenge” to Britain’s systems of health and social care. Mr Hunt has repeatedly said that healthcare workers already working in Britain should be given assurances that they can stay, post-Brexit.

Call Dr Machi Mannu:
The game works by flashing up pictures of healthy and unhealthy food and the user has to react by only pressing on the healthy foods to score points. The simple act of ignoring unhealthy foods, and stimulating the reward response to healthy foods is enough to retrain the brain into craving healthier options, say scientists. A study of 83 adults showed that people who played the game online just four times in one
week lost weight and ate an average of 220 kcal less per day - roughly equivalent to a chocolateiced doughnut. “In an age where unhealthy food is so abundant and easily available and obesity is a growing health crisis, we need to design innovative ways to support people to live more healthily” said Dr Lawrence. Nearly two thirds of adults in Britain are overweight or obese, and the UK is forecast to be the fattest country in
Europe within 10 years Users of the app, who should ideally use it for a few minutes a day without distractions, can tailor it to reduce compulsions to unhealthy food they have most problem with, as well as alcohol, but not to reduce consumption of healthy foods including vegetables. The scientists launched a campaign to develop a app, this week made available for Android devices, into an app that can be used on iPhones and iPads.

Tackling mental health stigma
Mental illness, and by implication stigma, has a profound impact on individuals, their families and the community as a whole. The wider impact of such stigmatisation has not been studied in detail. However, there is good evidence that the carers and families of affected individuals can be similarly affected. Furthermore, it is not
unusual for mental health professionals themselves to be looked down on by other health professionals. The de-stigmatisation of mental illness requires a complete change in attitude by the medical and other professions. It is unethical to discriminate against any patient on any count, and in this regard mental illness is no different. The
evidence is compelling that the best outcomes are achieved by ensuring any mental disorder is treated vigorously in patients who present with physical disease. It is entirely unacceptable that patients with severe mental illness should die 10 to 20 years earlier than the general population. Patients with mental illness and a concomitant physical disease are also
reluctant to seek medical advice, and have worse outcomes; the reverse is also true, that patients with a physical illness and concomitant mental illness also have worse outcomes than those without any mental disorder. The role of clinicians is crucial in providing that holistic approach to physical and mental care and treatment to ensure that such anomalies are eliminated. There is evidence that severe mental illness in most patients shows signs of emergence at an early age, sometimes as early as seven years. In the majority of cases, schools are well equipped to dealing with minor behavioural problems, but as more complex issues arise, expert help needs to be immediately accessible through child and adolescent mental health services. However, there are major issues including recruitment, costs and availability of beds.

Nokia’s vision for the future of healthcare
Some technology companies are destined to be forever associated with one moment, be it a spectacular flop, like the Sinclair C5, or an innovation that changed the world, like Sony’s Walkman. For Nokia, associations with the first flowering of the mass market in mobile phones are proving hard to shake. Since the humbled Finnish giant sold its mobile phone division to Microsoft in 2013 for £4.6bn it has been focused on behindthe-scenes technology,
including broadband, network infrastructure and maps. Now, however, it is attempting a comeback as a consumer brand. Last year it paid €170m (£147m) for Withings, a French digital health startup founded in 2008 which makes internet-connected thermometers, heart rate and blood pressure monitors and weighing scales. It is also known for fitness trackers, baby monitors and a new home security system.

THE ISLAND BY VICTORIA HISLOP
“A single shot ricocheted across the water, the noise amplified by the echo from the mountains behind, and a crimson blanket spread itself slowly across the still sea.” Spinalonga was a former leper colony where people were exiled from 1903-1957 in northern Crete. During the second world war the Germans occupied the island as well as allied forces. Hislop has combined history with fiction, presenting the reader with a moving portrayal of four generations of one family blighted by leprosy, war and its legacy. Alexis Fielding is 25, working in a museum and likely to follow in her father’s footsteps in archaeology. Ed was her boyfriend of 3 years and what was once a promising affair has now turned sour “like a sickly cutting that had failed to survive being transplanted from greenhouse to border.” They were meant to be on holiday but conflict, arguments and lots of self-reflection amounted to doubts over suitability and compatibility. Curiosity about her mother, Sofia who was born on the island of Crete resulted in Alexis trekking to Plaka to find a family friend called Fortini who hopefully would unravel the family history which inevitably meant unearthing the skeletons in the closet, a disclosure that knocked Alexis for six! From 2001 the story reverts to 1939 with Alexis’s great grandparents and the tragic revelation that her great grandmother Eleni had developed the virulent strain of leprosy and was condemned to the place of the living dead, Spinalonga to end her days in suffering and torment before being laid to rest in a communal and unmarked grave. Ironically, fate dealt another severe blow when one of Eleni’s daughter, Maria was diagnosed with the same disease as her mother and followed a similar fate almost in 1953. Timing was cruel-she was about to celebrate her marriage to a local
Special Offers Visit:
Romeo whe she was exiled to the rock as it was called. Fortunately there were doctors researching the disease and a cure was eventually found, although it was too late for those who had succumbed to the disease. When the Germans arrived during the 40s they committed murder and mutilation destroying villages and its inhabitants fearing the Allied forces and the Resistance which proved a threat to their occupation of Crete. They threatened to exterminate all male inhabitants of the villages aiding the Allies. A young male leper from the island was brutally murdered trying to swim to Plaka to celebrate his son’s 3rd birthday in the late summer of 1943. Obviously, they were nervous of leprosy spreading and wanted it contained on Spinalonga. Fortini is thorough and yet sensitive as she retells stories about the lives of those affected by jealousy and betrayal in hard times when the war added an extra strain of misery. “Our so called fate is largely ordained by our ancestors, not by the stars.” Three generations of lives were so intertwined. Eleni and Maria’s sad fate was the tip of the iceberg. Pandora regretted opening her box. Would it be the same for Alexis when she discovered what happened to her grandmother Anna and her husband? Alexis is certainly shocked by what she hears but matures and consequently grows closer to her mother and these revelations have the added bonus of helping her to decide on her future with Ed. It’s a wonderful story, deep and fulfilling. It deserves a read. Carol Naylor. REVIEW it.
Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. The only professional computer help that comes from over 38 years’ experience and a University education. You can contact me for an appointment at my workshop or I can come to you, by calling 689 892 745 or by Email: canducomputing@hotmail. co.uk. Today I would like to talk about that perennial nutmeg ‘Robocalls and Telemarketers’. To be a little more precise, how to stop them! First a simple question for those of us who haven’t heard the term ‘RoboCalls’, what are they? A robocall is a phone call that uses a computerized auto-dialer to deliver a pre-recorded message, as if from a robot. Modern robocalls aren’t just telemarketers trying to sell you something. They’re often scammers trying to trick you into parting with your money or identity information. So how do you stop them from coming in? I started my search by type ‘“do not call” registry Spain’ into google and immediately found a link to something called ‘Listas Robinson’ or ‘The Robinson List’. (Do Not Call Registers are sometimes known as Robinson Lists – a reference to the privacy and isolation of the Swiss Family Robinson.) The easiest and most efficient way to get the person to stop calling you requires you to say one sentence: “Please put me on your do not call list.” You must say only this! As any other phrasing might be ambiguous enough for them to ignore your request! If they choose to ignore your correctly phrased
February 2017
request, they can face a fine of $40,000! The next step is to install a program on your phone that keeps and up-todate list numbers that people reported as unwanted. The first ‘App’ that recommended is called ‘Mr Number’ and is available on both the Android and Apple iPhone. They have a website which asks you to include your number which is added to the list that legitimate companies ‘lock-out’ of their ‘Autodialer’ software. Now there will be people (Scammers, thieves and general bad people) who aren’t interested in letting your money go that easily. So how do you stop them? On Android 6 (Marshmallow) and later the easiest way to do this is to long-press the number in your call log, then select “Block number.” This is something that people have been calling for, for several years! For the older versions then you have to add the number to your phone book (I use the name ‘Blocked’) and once in you simply select the blocked number from the address book, press the menu button (off screen, bottom left usually) and you will get the option to block this number – done. On iPhone you simply ignore the call, then subsequently open your call history so you can block them. If you’re in the Phone app under ‘Recents’, tap the (i) symbol next to the phone number or contact that you want to block. Scroll to the bottom of your screen, then tap Block this Caller. For now, though, these solutions should help diminish the problem, if not eliminate it entirely.

Your organic garden in Winter
Your garden design inspiration in Spain
Even the smallest space can be green and inviting, while providing room for a car or two. If you have a very tight space, plants can still line the path up to the door, showing there is no need to completely pave a garden even when space is very tight. A container by the door adds further interest. There’s still room for more greenery, though. The fence could, for example, be replaced with a hedge. Containers help, but it would be great to include a small border under the window, a boundary hedge and wall climbers. Trees provide lots of benefits, as they cool and shade in summer.
HOUSE CLEARANCE BAR CLEARANCE
Soil - Protect bare soil during the winter months. Use autumn leaves as mulch (covering) during winter weather. If necessary, cover with netting or fleece to prevent wind blowing everything away. Don’t stop weeding. Hoe off/pull out any annual weeds, and dig out perennial ones that are revealed. Compost green foliage, but not seed heads or perennial weed roots. Keep off wet soil in all parts of the garden to avoid
compacting and damaging the structure. If you absolutely have to walk on it in the wet, stand on a plank to spread your weight. This is especially important for clay soil. Composting - Add enough dry waste to balance the large amounts of wet waste coming out of the kitchen just now. Crumpled up Christmas card envelopes and bits of cardboard are very useful to provide the carbon element needed.
How to Water Indoor Plants
1 HR COLLECTION CASH WAITING TEL 669 723 709
www.auctionlosmontesinos.com
Indoor plants, or houseplants, have different needs than plants grown outside. They rely on you for everything. Watering your indoor plants involves knowing what specific plants need, watering on their schedule, and frequently checking the soil. You can help your plants by potting them in pots that drain well and pots that are fitted to the plant’s size. Healthy plants also require the right type of water and the proper amounts, but there are ways to help stabilize plants that have been overwatered, too. Research your specific plant’s needs. Not every type of houseplant has the same watering needs, so educate yourself on the
plants you have or are thinking of buying. Don’t assume that every plant wants 1 quart of water every two days because all of your plants won’t thrive like that. Some may prefer to have their soil fairly dry most of the time, while others need it moist. Some may need the soil to dry out in between waterings. Let the plant determine when you water it. Although it may be easiest to water on a set routine that you have decided, plants are not likely to thrive when watered this way. So rather than watering every two days, get a feel for how often your plant needs water. Check the soil consistently and learn how often it tends to dry out and water on that
schedule. Even indoor plants tend to have a dormant stage during the winter, so it is likely they will not need to be watered as often during this time. In regards to time of day, morning tends to be a good time to allow the plant time to dry out some before the cooler temperatures come in the evening.
Pests and Diseases of Fruit Trees with Solutions to the Problems
Pick every last fruit off fruit trees. Fruit hanging on trees over winter is one of the main sources of brown rot infection in the spring. Infected fruit can be composted safely. If your fan-trained peaches/nectarines have been affected by peach leaf curl, build a rainproof structure to protect them. It needs to be in place before buds start to grow as over-wintering disease spores are spread by rain splashes. A simple frame supporting a plastic sheet to keep the plant dry is all that is required. Check grease bands are still sticky and
in place around fruit trees and stakes to give control against winter moth, plum fruit moth and March moth. Replace where necessary. Check rabbit guards too Entice birds into the garden to eat winter aphids with fat balls hanging in trees or suspended from bamboo canes set among fruit bushes and canes. Inspect apples trees for woolly aphids. Look for a whitish fluffy coating where branches join the trunk and cracks in the bark. Ways to Prevent or Treat Aphid Damage
Encourage predators into your garden such as ladybirds, spiders and hoverflies. Go easy on the nitrogen fertilizers as the softer growth encourages aphids. Inspect vulnerable plants and break off and discard any affected pieces. Plant pot marigolds and nasturtiums close to any plants you want to protect. Spray affected plants with derris or very diluted washing-up liquid. 6. Hang up strips of fat in the trees to attract blue tits who love eating aphid eggs. Burn or bury heavily damaged plants.

Pruning made easy
An easy guide to pruning apples and pears Before getting started, remember; Take your time and stay safe - if you need to go up a ladder, consider investing in a special fruit tripod ladder that will let you get nice and close to the branches (great for picking fruit too) A sharp pair of secateurs and quality pruning saw can make all the difference Your tree will rarely look like the diagrams! Five tips to pruning apples and pears How much do I prune off? Aim to take between 1020% of the overall canopy off in any one winter. Work around the tree evenly and keep an eye on your pruning pile - if it’s looking a little big, STOP - you can always go back next year and do some more. A little word of warning: The more you prune, the stronger the regrowth (if the tree is healthy). If you have pruned too hard, your tree is likely to produce vigorous upright branches called watershoots. This isn’t ideal as they crowd the crown. Watershoots growing in a convenient place – e.g. filling a gap – can be pruned by about third to encourage branching. Otherwise, remove watershoots from their point of origin. Your aim is to take out a bit of old wood each winter, to stimulate new. But the majority of the fruiting wood should be quite young - one to four years old, which is the wood that fruits best.
Growing tomatoes from seeds
Transfer the plants to the outdoor location
If you are using peat pots, this is easy. All the kids need to do is put the entire pot into the hole. However, if you used some non-biodegradable container to grow the seeds, the kids will need to remove the plants. The plants will need to be removed from the containers and placed into the holes. This must be done carefully so that the roots aren’t damaged. Rather than pull the plants out by the stem, it’s better to “pry” them out with a fork. After the plant is put into the hole, fill any spaces with soil. Then pat the soil down so that the plant is not falling over.

Water the plants and care for them
Once the plants are all firmly planted into the ground, have the kids water them. Have them use a watering can rather than a hose since they don’t want to flood the plants. However, the kids need to provide enough water so that it reaches the roots. Each day, the kids should go out and check the soil to make sure it is moist. , but if the plants are properly watered, they will only need to be watered about once a day. If the ground is already moist, for example after a rain, they will not need to be watered.

THE GREAT SNOWSTORM OF 17
It snowed in Alqueria for the first time in living memory. If anyone wishes to check the metrological records of our Village Republic they will see that this is so. Normally a cynical temperature inversion keeps Alqueria warm and balmy but covered in a worryingly sticky, green and foul smelling mist while the rest of the Iberian Peninsular freezes. This system however has failed for whatever reason and Alqueria is up to its nether regions in the freezing result of sublimation. Loco Paco put it down to divine intervention aimed at punishing the people of Alqueria for not recognising his imaginary five foot rodent friend ‘Bert’ as a living entity and worthy of housing benefit and a Winter fuel allowance. Whatever the reason Alqueria was isolated by a wall of snow making a change from it being isolated by apathy and high powered inertia.
Rodriquez who had never stepped foot outside Alqueria, mainly because when he did gentlemen in green uniforms and blue lights on their cars escorted him back again tried to bottle it and sell it. He was very disappointed when he discovered it had no street value and went back to manufacturing counterfeit Remitroot codpieces which sold well among certain members of the British House of Lords. Manuela knew all about snow and the
frost bite it can cause to exposed regions of the body. Suffice it to say Manuela has suffered greatly from this particular malady and has ceased all alfresco pursuits until the milder weather arrives. Antonio Poyato’s first though was to test the snow for alcohol content in case it was a competitor for his Remitroot Wine, Whisky and Beer. It was of great relief that the analysis only showed heavy metals, hydrocarbons and a strange strain of bacteria that is usually only present between the toes of Afghan camels drivers over the age of fifty-five.
Communications between Alqueria and the outside world ceased to function and no vehicles could enter of leave the Pueblo. On this news stock markets reached record highs and foreign currencies surged. The Spanish parliament mooted the idea of keeping Alqueria permanently filled with artificial snow diverted from the Sierra Nevada but a corrupt politician had already sold it to The House of Lords to pack codpieces. The snow didn’t linger long however, by next morning it was gone. The general feeling is that it became depressed by the ambiance of Alqueria and by same strange mechanism elevated its own temperature and melted. Loco Paco spent the rest of the day looking for it, he felt sure it was a case of theft and notified the authorities.
STRANGE DAY
We had a piece of paper for our appointment at the Bola Azul Hospital in Almería. I like having a piece of paper; it gives me something tangible to wave in front of Nursie as she exits the consulting rooms to brave the melee of waiting patients. It justifies my appearance in her hallowed presence - A phone appointment has no physical proof of its existence, and this makes me insecure and anxious. Bola Azul heaves from wall to wall with those in need; Quiet is impossible, and seats are at a premium. Yet as we exited the lift we were aware of a resounding silence. We entered the waiting room, which would have made the Marie Celeste seem overcrowded. We stood alone in this echoing, empty chamber – we must have got the appointment wrong. I fished out the magic paper, and there it was – black on grey. We were in the right place, on the right day and at the right time – where was the usual tumultuous multitude? I heard laughter, homed in on it and found a *comfort of nurses enjoying a rare sit-down. I waved my document of authority before them, and before our backsides could contact any of the many available free seats we were whisked straight in to see the Consulta. We were out before we should have been in – but where was everybody else? We were pondering this on the way back along the motorway when our thoughts were distracted by an oncoming *camel. We watched in amazement as a truck passed by on the other side of the central barrier with a chesnut camel, complete with golden saddle,

seated on its roof. Barely had we recovered from the chesnut camel when along came a white camel, also seated, but with a bright blue saddle. Then the penny dropped – Melchior and Balthazar had decided to return to their homeland by a quicker and more comfortable means of transport! Casper, presumably, is still trotting back to Arabia on his horse – no horse came by on a truck roof! As we left the motorway and slowed for the roundabout we felt a gentle but perceptible thump! Henry got his backside bumped - by an Alfa Romeo! I got out to view the damage, my sword of righteousness ready in my hand. ‘I am sorry, it is my fault.’ Insisted the very penitent young Spanish Alfa Romeo driver. ‘No damage, no problem.’ I answered, sheathing my sword. The soft answer does indeed turn away wrath! All in all, a very Strange Day! *Comfort is possibly the collective name for a gathering of nurses – or if not, then it should be! *Not a real one!
‘Airbnb for refugees’ group overwhelmed by offers of help
A German group which matchmakes citizens willing to share their homes with refugees said it had been overwhelmed by offers of support, with plans in the works for similar schemes in other European countries. The Berlin-based Refugees Welcome, which has been described as an “Airbnb for refugees”, has helped people fleeing from Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, Mali, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia and
Syria. More than 780 Germans have signed up to the Refugees Welcome website and 26 people have been placed in private homes so far. Two of the site’s founders, Jonas Kakoschke, 31, and Mareike Geiling, 28, live with 39-year-old Bakari, a refugee from Mali, whom they are helping with German classes while he waits for a work permit. A spokesman said the project’s growing success has now led to
offers of help to set up similar schemes in other EU countries, including Greece, Portugal and the UK, with a comparable project in Austria already up and running since January. Over the weekend, thousands of Icelanders offered to accommodate Syrian refugees in their own homes in an open letter to the government about the migration crisis. Among those who have responded to
the German site have been PR consultants, carpenters and many students, spanning a large age range from 21 to 65. Most are people living in flatshares, the group said, but offers have also come from married couples and single mothers. Teacher Johann Schmidt shares his apartment in Konstanz with an Iraqi refugee, with whom he was matched after registering with the
site in November 2014. “Azad tells me about his home country time and again, and can explain the overall context of the current situation to me in simple terms,” Schmidt said. “I’ve learned quite a bit from him already and very much enjoy listening to his stories.” Accommodating a refugee does not have to mean losing out on the rent of a room, Refugees Welcome said. In a third of the cases, costs are covered either by the job centre or social welfare payments, and a quarter of the rents are paid for via microdonations to the site. “We are overwhelmed by people’s readiness to help,” the group said on Tuesday. “We are now receiving inquiries from different countries within Europe such as Greece, Portugal and Scotland, but also from Australia and the US. “Everywhere, people are keen to realise this idea in their countries
to be able to offer refugees a home.” Others have been taking refugees into their homes on their own initiative, even politicians. Martin Patzelt, an MP from chancellor Angela Merkel’s CDU party, temporarily housed two Eritrean refugees in his home in Brandenburg. Patzelt said he been contacted by many other Germans offering their homes too, but had also received death threats. “I didn’t want any refugees in my life, but they came. And I took the challenge,” he said. Offers of help have sometimes been too numerous for authorities to handle. On Tuesday, Munich police appealed to the public to stop bringing gifts for refugees, announcing in a tweet that they had been overwhelmed by the amount of provisions people had left, including foodstuffs and nappies.

The perfect lemon curd
Makes 400ml) 5 unwaxed lemons 225g white sugar 6 eggs (3 whole eggs and 3 yolks) Pinch of salt 100g butter, cubed Zest three of the lemons into a bowl with the sugar and rub together with your fingertips to release the oils, then squeeze enough of them to give 225ml juice. Whisk the eggs into the sugar followed by the lemon juice, a little at a time, until fully incorporated. Put in a heavy-based pan over a low heat and stir continuously with a rubber whisk or wooden spoon until as thick as Bird’s custard which should take about 7-8 minutes. Whisk in the salt and pour into a food processor or blender if you have one. Cool for five minutes. Start the motor and blend on a low speed for 30 seconds (alternatively, beat with a wooden spoon), then start dropping in the butter, a little at a time, still with the motor on, until smooth. GREAT FUN NIGHT OUT
Serves four. 5cm piece fresh ginger, peeled and roughly chopped, 20g coriander stalks, roughly chopped, 2 garlic cloves, crushed, 2 large plum tomatoes, quartered. 1 large shallot, peeled and roughly chopped. 2 red chillies, deseeded and roughly chopped, ½ tsp ground cinnamon, ¼ tsp ground turmeric, ½ tsp ground cumin. 345ml groundnut oil, 40 fresh curry leaves, 1 tsp black mustard seeds. Salt. 4 sea bream, scaled, gutted and skin scored at 2cm intervals on both sides, 50g tamarind pulp soaked in 250ml boiling water, 250ml coconut milk 2 tsp light muscovado sugar, 100g urid dal, 60g rice flour, for dusting. 1 lime, quartered. For the sambal 40 fresh curry leaves, 1 tbsp groundnut oil. Coarsely grated flesh of ½ coconut, 1 small shallot, peeled and coarsely grated, 15g coriander, coarsely chopped. 2 tsp lime juice Put the first nine ingredients in a food processor. Heat two tablespoons of the oil in a small frying pan on a high flame. Add the curry leaves, if using, and fry
for a minute or two, until crisp and aromatic. Add the mustard seeds, fry for a few seconds, then tip the contents of the pan into the food processor. Add half a teaspoon of salt and blitz for one to two minutes, until you have a rough paste (scrape down the sides of the bowl as you work the mixture). Put the fish in a medium bowl: add about a quarter of the paste mix and a quarter-teaspoon of salt, and rub into the fish: you want to get the paste right into the flesh, through the score marks. Put in the fridge to marinate for at least 30 minutes. Heat a tablespoon of oil in a medium sauté pan on a medium-high flame. Once hot, fry the remaining paste for five minutes, stirring from time to time, until aromatic and thick. Meanwhile, mix the tamarind in its soaking water, to release the seeds, then strain into the sauté pan. Add the coconut milk, sugar, dal and an eighth of a teaspoon of salt, and bring to a boil. Turn down the heat to medium, and simmer for 20-25 minutes, until the sauce is thick and the lentils are
cooked but still have a bite Keep warm. For the sambal, heat the curry leaves, if using, and oil in a small frying pan for two to three minutes, until the leaves are crisp and aromatic, then pour into a small bowl and mix with the coconut, shallot, coriander, lime juice and an eighth of a teaspoon of salt. If you don’t have curry leaves, instead mix the oil with the rest of the ingredients without heating it. Heat the remaining 300ml oil in a large sauté pan on a medium flame. Dust the fish with the rice flour, so it’s well coated on both sides. Once the oil is hot, turn the heat to medium-low and carefully lower in two of the fish. Fry for seven to eight minutes, turning halfway, until cooked through and dark golden brown on both sides, then transfer to a plate lined with kitchen paper and sprinkle each fish with a pinch of salt. Repeat with the other two fish. Serve one fish per portion, with some of the tamarind dal spooned all over it. Top with the sambal and serve with a wedge of lime.

Oyster and beer batter fritters
Serves 4-6 200g flour ½ tsp smoked paprika (optional – Dad would never have heard of it!) 1 tsp salt 2 tsp sugar 1 tsp baking powder 230ml beer, at room temperature (lager is best; dark ale overpowers the oysters) 2 tbsp chives, chopped 8 oysters 2 tbsp oyster sauce 3-4 thick slices of slightly stale white bread, cut into largish cubes (if the bread is fresh the fritters will become soggy) Oil, for deep-frying Lemon wedges, to serve.
1 Heat the oil to 180C/350F. 2 Make the batter by sieving the flour, smoked paprika, salt, sugar and baking powder. Whisk in half the beer slowly, making sure there are no lumps. Whisk in the chives then the remaining beer. 3 Open the oysters, put in a small blender with the oyster sauce and 3 tbsp cold water, and pulse to a smooth puree. 4 Lay the bread cubes in a wide bowl and drizzle the oyster puree over. Gently toss the bread to coat evenly – it will suck up the juice, so work

You will need a 25cm cast-iron frying pan or a similarly sized ovenproof pan to cook these puffy pancakes. Serves 4-6 3 large eggs 150ml whole milk 100g plain flour 1 tsp vanilla extract A pinch of freshly grated nutmeg ¼ tsp flaky sea salt 55g unsalted butter Zest of 1 lemon 25g icing sugar, for serving 2 large lemons, cut into wedges 1 In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk,
flour, vanilla, nutmeg and salt. Strain into a jug and let the batter rest for 45 minutes in the fridge. 2 Heat the oven to 220C/425F/gas mark 7. Put the skillet in the middle of the oven for 10 minutes to heat it up. 3 Drop in the butter and swirl it around to melt it. Pour in all of the batter and return to the oven for 20-25 minutes until puffed at the edges and golden brown. 4 Zest a lemon right over the top of the baby and serve immediately dusted with icing sugar alongside plenty of lemon wedges.
quickly. Give the batter a gentle whisk, then add the bread, 6-8 chunks at a time, and gently toss to coat them evenly. 5 Deep-fry in the oil until golden, shaking off excess batter to form what we called “crunchies”, and turning them a few times so they cook evenly. Put on to kitchen paper, sprinkle with salt, and keep them in a warm oven while you cook the rest. 6 Eat while hot and still crunchy. Eat them with a beer. Oysters from the South Island are lovely specimens with the creamiest flavour.
Easy Spanish Tapas
Pulpo a Feira: Though it originated in Galicia or the neighbouring region of Leon, pulpo a feira, as it is known in Galician, or pulpo a la gallega, as it is called in Spanish, is now popular throughout Spain. It is usually served on wooden plates with cachelos, potatoes that have been boiled or roasted in embers with their skins on. Mussels Vinaigrette: Steamed mussels are dressed with a flavourful vinaigrette in this colorful tapa.

Savouring the wines of southwest France
Domaine Rotier Les Gravels Gaillac, France 2012. Bounded to the west by the starchy grandees of Bordeaux, and to the southeast by the great engine-room of French wine, the LanguedocRoussillon, the cluster of disparate, individualistic appellations known collectively as South West

But this is fertile territory for anyone looking for something a little different or for wines that always tend to have a food-friendliness and refreshment factor, no matter their colour or style. braucol and duras with a dollop of Syrah in the Gaillac appellation that straddles the Tarn to the east of Toulouse, Domaine Rotier’s gloriously spicy, crunchy lighter red exemplifies those qualities perfectly, especially with a jar of succulent duck rillettes and a pile of toast.

The grand total of 7,256 euros was raised! TEL: 950 121 936 - SALES@SOLTIMES.COM
Members of Crescendo International Choir are hard at work practising for their forthcoming concerts. Their concerts last year raised a fantastic amount for various charities. Most of this was from bucket collections especially
from the joint concert with Military Wives, but the choir also donated 600 euros of their own funds to make up the grand total of 7,256 euros! The first concert of the New Year will be at Torrevieja Christian
Fellowship on March 4th at 5pm. Tickets are available at 5 euros and all the proceeds will go to an orphanage in Uganda. “Music to save lives” is a non-profit making organisation helping the orphans to build confidence and
develop talents. Musical Director of the school is Elisabeth Michot who will be at Crescendo’s concert to receive the monies collected and take it directly to the orphanage. At present there are 13 boys and 10 girls with a staff of 5 teachers and assistants. Another 8 children live locally and attend at weekends and holidays. There are also 6 more young people being helped to start their own business and 10 primary school children are helped with school fees. For further information on crescendo’s past and future concerts, please go to the website crescendo-choir.com.

APAH are appealing for a long-term foster home for a very needy cat. Heidi has been in APAH’s care since 2010. She is a mature, very affectionate cat with a life-long medical condition. It isn’t contagious and is kept under control by medication; which she is well used to and takes without a problem. Her medical needs will be maintained by APAH, but she needs a loving home for her later years.

PETS IN SPAIN
Sally is just 8 months old and had been discarded by the people she thought would protect her. She was being bullied on the streets by feral cats and when we approached her with a cat box she immediately walked straight into it. She loves to curl up on a lap and will make a wonderful companion. Sally is vaccinated and sterilised. Call: 645 469 253 www.petsinspain.com info@petsinspain.info
This big guy is a real gentle giant. He is loveable and likes a good belly rub. He is good with people and in excellent condition. He was found wandering the streets trying to interact with people. He appears to have been well looked after, but has obviously been lost and with no microchip found, we do not know his owners. He is well house trained, is very good on a lead and when left to roam freely within boundaries. He would make an excellent family dog.

Winter walks in Greece
Some routes are made for winter walking when bitter weather sets in! This charming season lends nature unique colours. History-laden walkways next to rivers and lakes will offer you magnificent tranquil moments in the city. If crispy cold weather frightens you, put on your coat, hat and gloves and go along with us on a walk to different cities in Greece. Thessaloniki - In winter there’s is nothing better than to pay a visit to the lady of the North, Thessaloniki. It is a modern, elegant and refined city, bursting with life, and loved by the young and old. Either it is day or night a walk down Thessaloniki’s seafront promenade, called nea paralia in Greek, will definitely be compensating. Your stroll begins from the town’s renowned White Tower and ends at the Concert Hall. Walk next to the waterfront facing Thermaikos Gulf and drink in the view of Mt. Olympus, the mountain of ancient Greek myth. By the waterfront and come across the statue of Alexander the Great but don’t forget to make a stop and take a picture of the city’s landmark, the renowned art work Umbrellas by Zongolopoulos! The city’s lights by the seafront makes pedaling in the evening even more magical.

Greece all time classic
Monastiráki and Psyrrí
Athens and around
Monastiráki, to the north of Pláka, is substantially less touristy than its neighbour, though there are still plenty of sights and extensive opportunities for eating, drinking and shopping. The area gets its name from the little monastery church (monastiráki) on central Platía Monastirakíou. The square, with its handy metro station, marks a return to the traffic and bustle of commercial Athens, full of fruit stalls, street performers, lottery vendors and kiosks.
For all too many people, ATHENS is a city that happened two-and-a-half thousand years ago. It’s true that even now the past looms large – literally, in the shape of the mighty Acropolis that dominates almost every view, as well as on every visitor’s itinerary. Yet the modern city is home to over four million people – more than a third of the Greek nation’s population – and has undergone a transformation in the twenty-first century. On first acquaintance, Athens is not a beautiful place – the scramble for growth in the decades after World War II, when the population grew from around 700,000 to close to its present level, was an architectural disaster. While its economic reputation has taken a battering, Greece remains a premier-league travel destination. Its incredible historic sites span four millennia, encompassing both the legendary and the obscure. Its convoluted coastline is punctuated by superb beaches, while its mountainous interior urges you to dust off your hiking boots and explore. Yet perhaps its greatest riches are the islands, ranging from backwaters where the boat calls twice a week to resorts as cosmopolitan as any in the Mediterranean. For anyone with a cultural bone in their body Greece cannot fail to inspire. Minoans, Romans, Arabs, Latin Crusaders, Venetians, Slavs, Albanians and Turks have all left their mark, and almost every town or village has a link to the past, whether it’s a delicately crumbling temple to Aphrodite, a forbidding Venetian fort or a dusty Byzantine monastery decorated with exquisite frescoes. And let’s not forget the museums stuffed to bursting with Classical sculpture and archaeological treasures. But the call to cultural duty will never be too overwhelming on a Greek holiday. The hedonistic pleasures of languor and warmth – swimming in balmy seas at dusk, talking and drinking under the stars. – are just as appealing. Bar a few upmarket and “boutique” exceptions you may struggle to find fivestar comfort – orthopaedic mattresses, faultless plumbing and cordon bleu cuisine are not the country’s strongpoint – but this isn’t really what the Greek experience is about.

It looks as though 2017 will be the year of the hot crossover, and Fiat will be one of the first makers to join the party with an Abarth version of its 500X. The styling of the test mule snapped on test in our spy shot has been somewhat toned down to throw people off its scent, but the beefier brakes are a giveaway that this is no ordinary Fiat 500X. The new flagship model will get the same kind of stand-out look as the
Abarth 500 hot hatch, so it will be fitted with big wheels, lowered suspension and deep spoilers. There will also be a sports exhaust and plenty of scorpion badges and graphics. Power is expected to come from the 1.4-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine used in Fiat’s 124 Spider. However, power is expected to be increased to around 200bhp to help compensate for the extra weight of the larger 500X. The Abarth’s chief rival will be the Nissan Juke Nismo RS. The model is expected to be sold worldwide, but with a particular focus on the US, where one in five Fiat 500s are currently sold as Abarths.

Fiat Abarth
500x
The 500X is available with the same 1.4 Multiair II petrol engine that’s offered in the 124 Spider, in both cases producing 138bhp. The Multiair II motor is known to be highly adaptable, and Abarth engineers have hinted that up to 170bhp will be extracted for their version of the 124 Spider. A similar amount is expected for the Abarth 500X, with drive sent to all four wheels through either a six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed dual-clutch automatic. By comparison, both the Mini Countryman JCW and the Nissan Juke Nismo RS produce 215bhp from their respective turbocharged

1.6-litre petrol engines. As with other Abarth models, the 500X is likely to receive significant interior and exterior styling upgrades, new badging and graphics and distinctive wheel designs.
Fiat 500X success story
t’s easy to see why a performance 500X is on the way. Nearly 10,400 examples of the standard model found homes in Europe in the first part of 2015, and with sales in the small SUV crossover sector set to grow to 1.3 million a year in Europe by 2020, performance versions will have lots of potential customers to
aim at. That’s why Nissan is reportedly readying a Nismo version of its bestselling Qashqai crossover, powered by a tuned 1.6-litre DIG-T engine producing significantly more than the 215bhp Juke Nismo RS. Its sister car, the Renault Kadjar, is also preparing for a Renaultsport makeover.

Planning on driving to France?
A new colour-coded car emissions sticker system has come into force in Paris - and if you don’t have the correct one you face fines of between £58 and £117. While most British holidaymakers driving in France will give Paris a wide berth, a sizeable number will make a trip into the city - and they will now find they need to sign up to an emissions scheme, or that older cars

may even be banned. The Crit-Air scheme requires all vehicles – cars, lorries, motorcycles and buses – to display a round sticker, or vignette, in the windscreen that confirms which emissions group the vehicle fits into by the colour of the badge. Cars registered abroad will only be allowed to drive into the centre of the French capital without one until March 31.

The process will be phased over a threeyear period and see the number of disabled seats inside Old Trafford rise by 300, bringing United’s provision up to the required standard. Barcelona reach Copa Del Rey Semi Finals
Denis Suarez, Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi and Arda Turan helped Barcelona earn a comfortable victory over Real Sociedad and reach the Copa del Rey semi-finals. In the 17th minute Luis fed Denis with a dainty flick and the midfielder slotted home to open the scoring for the second time in five days. The Uruguayan then netted himself but was caught fractionally offside as Barcelona looked for a second. Eventually it came early in the second half as a lightning break downfield led to Inigo Martinez tripping Neymar in the penalty area. Messi dispatched the penalty with pinpoint accuracy, firing it into the bottom right corner, with goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli going the right way but unable to keep it out. La Real pulled one back when Juanmi ran in and flicked the ball over Jasper Cillessen’s head, but within a minute Luis Suarez struck at the other end after Messi slipped him in. Willian Jose pulled another goal back for Real Sociedad with Barcelona’s defence sleeping, with a bullet header that flew into the bottom left corner. Barcelona reacted with two more goals, one substitute feeding another when Aleix Vidal played in Arda Turan to score, Denis was played in by Messi again to roll home his second of the night.

London mayor Sadiq Khan brought together officials from Network Rail, Transport for London and Wembley Stadium to ensure a 10,000 increase in capacity for the fight.
