THIEVES TARGET HOLIDAY HOMES

Residents and holiday home owners have angrily complained about a lack of police patrols after a spate of break-ins in Mazarron, Villamartin and Orihuela Costa areas including one where a gang squatted for at least a week. More than a dozen properties have been targeted at the Puerto Bahia urbanisation and also in El Galan. There are now claims that police do not have sufficient officers to maintain adequate patrols in the areas. One woman was allegedly told police were aware that squatters had

been in her home. Although the gang damaged the property getting inside it appears they did not steal anything of value, despite forcing the garage door to check what was inside. But in another incident, one resident said his home was ransacked. “We don’t know how many people there were, but they ate and drank everything they could lay their hands on,” he said. The thieves then made off with a television, a microwave and bedding which had only just been purchased. The fact that no-one has been arrested has

left one resident feeling unsafe in her own home. “You feel frightened to think someone can so easily get in. There is not enough security in the area.” Residents said they were aware that undercover officers had previously patrolled the areas in unmarked cars, but this seems to have stopped. In some other incidents, thieves broke into properties in Bolnuevo, Mazzaron, but it is not known if the incidents are linked to others in the area.

Inflation Rises

Tourism Boost

Twins at 64!!! The Consumer Price Index (CPI) grew in January by 3% in yearon-year terms, 1.4 points higher than in December 2016, according to figures published by the National Statistics Institute (INE). This coincides with the advance figure announced by the INE at the end of last month. This acceleration is mainly due to the evolution of energy product prices and, in particular, motor and heating fuel prices. In month-on-month terms, the general CPI fell by 0.5% in January,

compared with a 1.9% fall in the same month of 2016. Energy product prices increased in January by 17.5% year-on-year, following a 5.3% rise posted in December. This is mainly due to the increase in electricity prices, which rose from 3.7% year-on-year in December to 26.2% in January, as well as the performance of motor and heating fuels, where prices grew from 6% to 13.9%, mainly due to the base effect derived from the sharp fall back in

January 2016. Food price inflation in January stood at 1.1%, which was three tenths higher than in December, which was due to an acceleration of unprocessed food prices. As well as a slight increase in processed food prices, drinks and tobacco, by one tenth to 0.3% year-on-year. An element of the rise in nonprocessed food prices is the increase of more than 10 points in the rate of growth of pulses and fresh vegetable prices to 17.9%.

A 64-year-old woman has successfully given birth to healthy twins – a boy and a girl – in Burgos, northern Spain. The Recoletas Hospital delivered the twins by Caesarean section, the usual method in such rare cases. The unnamed woman had undergone fertility treatment in the US, Spanish media report. The hospital has posted a video clip of the Caesarean delivery, according to the BBC. In 2012 the woman gave birth to a girl, who was later taken into care by social services,

amid welfare concerns, the BBC explained. Social workers said the girl was being brought up isolated, poorly clothed and with bad personal hygiene, the Spanish daily El Pais reported. No decision has been taken yet about the mother’s twins. They and the mother are reported to be in good health in hospital. The boy weighs 2.4kg (5.3 pounds) and the girl 2.2kg (4.8 pounds). The delivery went without complications.

Torrevieja’s councillor, deputy mayor and councillor for the Economy in Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, announced that they have launched a joint initiative to promote tourism in the two cities which will include reciprocal offers, as well as a calendar that is planned to give visibility to “the complementary aspects” of activities that are available in both municipalities. The objective of the arrangement is to take advantage of the very different “tourist synergies, that are available. In Cartagena they can offer the visitors from Torrevieja access to archaeological sites and historical centres, while the Torrevieja tourist office will make available ecotourism routes for the Natural Parks and the Lagoons at Torrevieja and La Mata, “said Serrano. Torrevieja’s councillor, accompanied by several members of her staff, will visit Cartagena on 2 March. “This is a starting point from which we want to develop our relationship over time. “

Alicante Terror Raid

A woman was detained after a raid at her house in Alicante. Police say that Dolores Hidalgo, a 36 year old Spaniard, was arrested because of her links to the terrorist organisation DAESH as she attempted to move to Syria or Iraq where she was to join the organisation with her four children. The woman, who was thought to be from Murcia, tried to travel with her 4 children in 2014 to the SyrianIraqi zone, where her husband is said to have died in the conflict.

Viva España!

These were the dramatic scenes as hundreds of bloodied and emotional African immigrants exploded with joy after storming a border fence to reach Spain. The men shouted: ‘Viva España’, ‘We Love You España’ and ‘Boza, boza’ - ‘Victory, victory’ as they beat their chests in a show of joy at making it to Europe. Many were bare chested and barefoot - and others were bleeding from deep cuts they had suffered after managing to reach Spain’s north African enclave of Ceuta from

Coca-Cola launch new premium mixers Coca-Cola Spain has launched a new line of premium mixers for the horeca industry. The eight-flavour range is Coca-Cola’s first new local brand in Spain for ten years, and is backed by a €22 million investment. Currently only planned for hotels, restaurants and cafés, Royal Bliss will give bartenders a portfolio of flavours with which

to create exciting new drinks. They include lemon, orange, yuzu tonic water, and ‘berry sensation’. Jorge Garduño, CEO of Coca-Cola for Spain and Portugal, called Royal Bliss one of the company’s ‘big bets for 2017’. Other flavours of Royal Bliss include an ‘elegant’ soda and two tonic waters – including one with zero sugar.

Morocco. Local authorities said they believed around 900 immigrants had attempted to storm the fence - and more than 400 had managed to cross it. It was not clear today how the centre - known as a CETI where the immigrants are given three meals a day, Spanish lessons and psychological support and stay for months at a time before being transferred to the mainland to relieve the pressure on living conditions - would cope. In December, local

governors ended up having to house the immigrants in army tents they mounted in a municipal equestrian centre car park after more than 400 undocumented Africans stormed the border fence. The tents were taken down just before the New Year after 74 men and five women were transferred to different parts of the Spanish mainland. At the time Ceuta’s CETI was said to be housing 948 people, nearly double the 512 it was built to accommodate.

The Alquerian Table

As the people of Alqueria are unique so is its cuisine. The climatic conditions, singular soil type and strange consistency of the water in the Río Verde combine to produce the most unusual foodstuffs in all Spain. Alquerian cuisine is based around Remitroot, local truffles and the freshwater fish from the Río Verde. The term freshwater is used advisedly. Fermented Remitroot berries and Río Verde water provide the basis for the local wine. Antonio Poyato, who brews the wine applied for Denominación de Origen certification, however the regulatory body returned his sample with a note simply saying ‘Not bloody likely’. Distilled Remitroot has recently attracted the attention of the United Nations Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission. Alqueria Pudding is a traditional meal enjoyed on festive occasions particularly weddings. The basis is again Remitroot, but pulped into a dough. Not unlike suet, the puddings can contain a variety of fillings. Because the dough is an aggressive aphrodisiac, very few are completely consumed. It is advisable to check with one’s doctor before eating one. It might also be polite to check with one’s partner. Alquerian Truffles may not be as sought after as the Motovun Forest variety but they are distinctive. Black with variable blue markings they have a pungent aroma slightly reminiscent of the drainage problems associated with Egyptian port

towns. A top French chef described them as having the consistency of Balsa Wood and the taste of hydrocortisone skin cream. Highly trained Mongolian Gerbils locate the delicacy on the southern slopes of the Sierra Alhamilla beneath fallen and rotting foliage.

The Río Verde begins life as a sparkling stream high in the Sierra. By the time it flows past Alqueria it is a slow moving malodorous green watery stew containing only the most resilient of life. Strange catfish and freshwater Lampreys lurk in its murky depths the only edible fish is the Alquerian Trout. Considered a separate species owing to its survival in the River, a task few other Salmoninae varieties have managed. Distinguished from other trout by large dilated eyes and a confused expression they need careful preparation. Nestor Clacketo ate one only partially cooked and it had the most terrible side-effects. He was in such a state of mental disorientation he entered and was welcomed into politics. A Sturgeon reputedly caught in the Río Verde is on display over the bar of La Casa Devante. It is in fact a rather badly preserved pike. The cardboard spines stapled to its back and markings fashioned with a black felttip pen fool few. Alqueria’s food and drink are perhaps only for the educated palate, acquired tastes, not for the faint hearted. If one is tempted to enjoy a repast of local delicacies, an open mind and good medical insurance are recommended.

Tch!

Greater fleas have lesser fleas Upon their backs to bite ’em Lesser fleas have little fleas And so ad infinitum! Or, to put it another way; there’s always a niggle somewhere! Even if you were to find yourself in a perfect hedonistic paradise, reclining on the most comfortable lounger in the world, not too hot, not too cold, a minion at the ready to replenish your glass and peel you another grape, you know it won’t last – sooner or later you are going to have to get up to pee! On the whole I think I am a fairly placid person, but there are a few things that I would class as ‘niggles.’ Our house is small and tiled, and is as easy to care for as can be desired - which is just as well, as I’m not an ardent fan of extreme housework. It has to be done, but it is a chore, not a pleasure. In particular, I resent cleaning the bath. We virtually never use the bath - the shower is so much easier and quicker – so why does it need dusting on an almost daily basis? And why is there always a dead fly in it? Whilst still on the cleaning theme I consider it unreasonable that it takes longer to move the furniture than to actually sweep or vacuum the floor. Why can’t detritus stay where it falls, instead to hiding under the chairs, table, or whatever object is near to hand? By the time I’ve moved all the chairs, etc, and then replaced them I could have

swept the whole of the Alhambra Palace! Then there’s Dirty Rain! Rain is supposed to wash things clean, not cover every surface in a red mud. Our rain seems to be at least 10% red earth, and has an extra clogging factor. It clings resolutely to everything, and refuses be shifted – It takes 2 goes with a cloth to get rid of the orangey hue – wiping down is a job that should be achievable in one pass; I object to having to do the whole lot twice! However, what I mainly object to is having to wash the clothes line – having to wash something that is designed to hold washing seems perverse to me! Then there is the Mystery of the Washing Up Cloth – If the washing up is clean, and is wiped dry with a cloth, how can that cloth ever get dirty? It only comes into contact with clean things!

Father & Son third in championships

The Supermoto race series has already started in Spain with the first round of the Catalan championships held last weekend at the spectacular Mora d’ebre circuit in Catalunya.

Whilst Saturday practice was held under sunny skies, come race day the heavens opened and the best of Spain’s supermoto racers had to battle in the torrential rain and storm force winds. The track

was partially flooded in places and the dirt section had to be closed due to the tricky conditions. The Advance Moves International Removals sponsored Supermotoland team

were fielding their 3 riders in the premier SM1 class with Mathew Ford - Dunn and with his brother Anthony in the SM road class. The third rider was Mat’s son Loris Ford-Dunn, who at only 15 years old was the youngest competitor in the SM2 youth class that runs in the same race as the adults. Anthony Ford- Dunn was off to a good start by qualifying 3rd in the SM road class and in his first race he was third away

but an early crash ended his day with a dislocated shoulder that side lined him for the rest of the meeting. His recovery is progressing well and he hopes to be fit for the first round of the European championships in Italy at the end of March. Undeterred by Anthony’s injury, Loris and Mat lined up for their two races in one of those rare moments where father and son are in the same race. The tricky conditions made for a

7

tough race but both riders held their nerve and finished strongly with Mat 5th in SM1 and Loris 3rd in SM2. The next race saw the track starting to dry a little but with the vicious gale force winds proving even more of a problem. This time Mat ran with the leaders and finished in 3rd to give him 3rd place overall in SM1, and Loris finished 3rd again in SM2 to put him 3rd overall as well. With both riders on the podium it was a great day for all.

Nokia will re-launch the 3310, perhaps the best-loved and most resilient phone in history. The phone, originally released in 2000 and in many ways beginning the modern age of mobiles, will be sold as a way of getting lots of battery life in a nearly indestructible body. The new incarnation of the old 3310 will

be sold for just €59, and so likely be pitched as a reliable second phone to people who fondly remember it the first time around. It will be revealed at Mobile World Congress later this month. Phones made under the Nokia brand are now sold by HMD Global, a Finnish company that bought the rights to the name.

These days, when most people do the majority of their shopping in giant supermarkets, out of town shopping complexes or city centre malls, it can be difficult to draw attention to a small business trading locally. But with concerns being raised over community cohesion, social inclusion and the environment, the local business has never been more important. It’s down to enterprising business owners like you to promote the importance of supporting local businesses so that the public understand why it matters and how it can benefit whole communities. In order to tackle the trend toward supermarket shopping, it’s important to understand why people choose it. Research indicates that the reasons they most frequently cite are the variety of products available and the convenience of having them all in one place.

Do you support local businesses? Challenge this directly through poster campaigns and advertisements which emphasise the variety offered by small independent businesses, contrasted with the way that monopolies tend toward homogenisation.

Remind people how convenient it is to have a lot of small shops offering different products and services located in the area, and how convenient it is to be able to shop close to home. It’s okay to admit that big business has the edge in some areas if you stress that there’s a cost to this. For instance, you could have a poster featuring a pint of milk which acknowledges that it’s cheaper in the supermarket but points out how much less time is spent if it can be picked up nearby, so that it still pays to shop locally. If your business purchases its products locally, it’s worth emphasising this - shopping with you means supporting local producers and cutting down on the environmental costs of long distance transport. If you sell food, it also means getting fresher produce. You can also point out that local businesses mean local jobs and increased opportunities for local people, encouraging the young to stay in the area and become positively involved with the community. It cuts out the daily commute for many people and makes their working lives more pleasant.

REVIEWS FILM OF THE WEEK The Girl on the Train Drama, Mystery, Thriller Published last year, Zimbabwean-born author Paula Hawkins’ novel The Girl On The Train has become a literary sensation, selling in excess of 11 million copies worldwide. As with Gone Girl, another taut thriller with a gasp-out-loud narrative twist, Hollywood came a-knocking.. Exploring tangled themes of motherhood, revenge and betrayal through the eyes of three women, who are unwittingly trapped in cycles of violence. Using on-screen title cards to chart the fractured chronology, the film shifts perspectives between these flawed yet resourceful protagonists, while attempting to pull the wool over our eyes.

OUR PICK OF THIS WEEK’S MUST-SEE MOVIES & TV

OUR CHOICE

ONE TO WATCH

Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway Episode: 1 Sat 25 Feb 2017 7.00pm - 8.30pm ITV Fresh from winning ‘Best Entertainment Programme’ at the National Television Awards 2017, Ant & Dec triumphantly return with a brand new series of ‘Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway’. Saturday night’s most high octane and feel good show is back, promising even more live surprises, stunts and hidden camera antics - with big name guests, an exciting new comedy serial and a jet set series finale which will be a British television first. Hot on the heels of last year’s “Who Shot Simon Cowell?” (the spoof mystery that kept the nation guessing) comes “The Missing Crown Jewels” - a brand new comedy mini-serial that sees the royal regalia stolen by a mysterious masked villain on Ant & Dec’s watch. Emilia Fox returns to investigate, while Joanna Lumley, Michael Sheen and Dame Shirley Bassey amongst others help Ant and Dec to recover the jewels. After 2016’s cruise ship spectacular live from Barcelona, Ant & Dec will make British TV history by jetting up to 200 viewers overseas for their biggest series finale yet. The whole nation will be in with a chance of winning this once in a lifetime trip. In a brand new item “Make ‘Em Laugh” Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby will go head to head with Ant & Dec. The rules are simple - they have to make each other laugh using costumes, props and their imaginations. You laugh, you lose. Stephen Mulhern once again presides over the drama of “Ant vs Dec”, which this time sees the duo face off in a series of themed head to heads. Stephen is also unleashed on the streets of Britain for a new pop-up game show - “In for A Penny”. Anyone who has a one pence piece can enter and be in with a chance of winning a wedge of cash.

Britain’s Busiest Motorway Episode: 2 of 6 Tue 28 Feb 2017 7.30pm - 8.00pm ITV Overview The M25 is the busiest motorway in Britain, stretching 117 miles around our capital city. It’s used for 73 million journeys a year, twice as many as it was designed for. In this brand new six-part documentary series we go behind the scenes with the hidden army of traffic controllers, patrol officers, engineers and maintenance workers who work tirelessly around the clock to keep the motorway moving. UK motorways are some of the safest in the world, but in a high-speed environment you are never far from danger. Around 700 people are seriously injured in accidents on the M25 every year, but it’s not just users of the motorway at risk. Working on the motorways is one of the most dangerous jobs in the UK, and Traffic Officers and Maintenance Crews are constantly in harm’s way.

Schofield’s South African Adventure

Ep 1/3 Fri 24 Feb 2017 8.00pm - 8.30pm ITV This Morning host Phillip Schofield embarks on a trip of a lifetime to South Africa with his wife Stephanie. Whilst some people may do all they can to get out of the water when they see a Great White Shark, Phillip heads straight in because diving with one of the world’s most dangerous predators has long been a bucket list dream for the TV presenter! To learn more about the sharks, Phillip travels to Gansbaai where he is fully briefed and kitted out in undersea equipment before stepping inside a cage to catch a glimpse of a Great White Shark in the wild. The couple also explore the city of Cape Town taking in the stunning scenery before stopping on their tour to have a drumming lesson. Taught by a djembe instructor, Phillip and Step join a group of drummers to see if they can learn the rhythms of the country.

How much screen time should I let my child have?

Having trouble sleeping? Grab a tent and go camping!!! As an antidote to one of the ills of modern life, it may leave some quite cold. When the lure of the TV or fiddling on the phone keeps you up late at night, it is time to grab the tent and go camping. The advice from scientists in the US follows a field study that found people fell asleep about two hours earlier than usual when they were denied access to their gadgets and electrical lighting and packed off to the mountains with a tent. A weekend in the wilds of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado helped reset people’s internal clocks and reversed the tendency of artificial

light to push bedtime late into the night. A spell outdoors, the researchers conclude, could be just the thing for victims of social jetlag who find themselves yawning all day long. “Our modern environment has really changed the timing of our internal clocks, but also the timing of when we sleep relative to our clock,” said Kenneth Wright, director of the sleep and chronobiology lab at the University of Colorado in Boulder. “A weekend camping trip can reset the clock rapidly.” “This should inspire people to look at all of the environmental factors that affect sleep “.

What parent hasn’t tried to wrestle their teenager’s phone away from them? For years, it was recommended a maximum of two hours’ screen time a day. Any more, it warned, and your child could get obese, sleep deprived and depressed. Research has also linked screen time to increases in risky behaviour, poor GCSE

results and aggression. No wonder that screens, particularly iPads and smartphones that can be held under the bedcovers, have become a family battleground. “Based on this study, as well as another large study by Andrew Przybylski at Oxford, it looks like anything up to about six hours a day is pretty normal,

and not associated with even minor negative outcomes,” says Ferguson. “Screens are now pretty much woven into our lives. The whole concept of screen time is really different to what it was 20 years ago.” So we can perhaps try to relax and remember there have always been panics about whatever young people happen

to be obsessed with. “We need only look back through history at Elvis Presley, comic books, Harry Potter, rock music in the 1980s and Dungeons & Dragons,” says Ferguson. “So long as kids are doing OK in school and getting enough sleep and exercise, then – for most of them at least – screen use is not going to have a profound impact. A lab recently published one study looking at violent media consumption, anxiety and depression, and found no evidence for links.” However, it is not being overly restrictive to insist your child stops looking at the screen an hour before bed and to keep devices outside the bedroom, or to encourage them to take exercise. It is also important to discuss the risks of social media. But, all that said, there’s still something about a screen and my teenager glued to it that makes me anxious.

Father condemns inaction on vaccine

A man whose daughter’s death from meningitis sparked a nationwide petition in the UK for more children to be vaccinated against it has accused the government of complacency. On the first anniversary of Faye Burdett’s death, her father, Neil, said the government had done “absolutely nothing” to raise awareness of the disease, despite promises to do so. He also revealed

that two-year-old Faye – who fought meningitis B for 11 days – mouthed the word “mummy” just before she died. Burdett and his wife, Jenny, made the decision to turn off Faye’s life support last Valentine’s Day after her body was ravaged by sepsis caused by meningitis. They released photos of their dying daughter covered in a rash, prompting more than 820,000 people to

sign a petition for the meningitis B jab Bexsero to be given to all children. The UK government has since declined to make the vaccine more widely available, saying it was not a good use of money. Burdett said the decision not to extend the vaccine to more age groups was “insulting and devastating”. He said he has heard nothing since appearing before MPs on the petitions committee

last March. “Children under five are vulnerable to meningitis and they can’t tell you exactly what is happening,” he said. “They are solely reliant on their parents and carers to spot that something is wrong. Burdett warned other parents not to give their child ibuprofen or paracetamol before taking them to the hospital or GP. The couple gave Faye ibuprofen, which they believe masked some of her symptoms. Last April, Jane Ellison, then public health minister, pledged to launch an awareness campaign for parents on the signs of meningitis. There is concern that the current model from the government does not account for the lifetime costs of caring with somebody left disabled by meningitis. Bexsero is available on the NHS for babies aged two months, followed by a second dose at four months and a booster at 12 months. Parents who wish to have older children vaccinated must pay privately.

The Witness For The Prosecution by Agatha Christie

“I’m like a man caught in a net-the meshes of it all round me, entangling me whichever way I turn.” The story was first published in the USA as “Traitor Hands” in 1925 and contains the original ending which was subsequently rewritten by the author herself for the play version and much more dramatic. Billy Wilder’s 1957 film version starred Laughton, Power and Dietrich which was a huge success followed by the more recent Sarah Phelps’ t.v. drama (December 2016) following on from her success the previous year of “And Then There Were None.” Sexed-up and given a modern outlook which didn’t go down well with some Christie die-hards because of a number of liberties taken with the original and which contains a very different and unsatisfactory ending to Christie’s. Mayherne was a small man, neatly dressed, shrewd with a reputation which stood very high as a solicitor. His client, Leonard Vole had been arrested for the wilful murder of a rich spinster, Miss Emily French. Mayherne knew his client was in great danger of being found guilty and hung. Initially, the solicitor thought his client guilty but over time and numerous interviews, Vole’s naivety seems to emerge and Mayherne’s opinion wavers. Vole met French quite by accident when she was crossing Oxford Street and struggling with a number of parcels. He offered assistance, simply just a common act of courtesy. He met up with her later that evening at a friend’s party and it was French that initiated a friendship of a sort considering the age difference, inviting him to her home in Cricklewood. He thought it churlish to refuse, certainly when he realised she was a lady of means and that she took “sudden violent fancies to people.” Subsequent meetings were significant and coincided with a run in of infernal bad luck

for Vole. He did admit that he enjoyed being mothered and pampered. He described himself as a drifter: I’m one of those people who can’t say no.” Before long Vole was asked to look into her business affairs which had flattered his ego. The difficulty for Mayherne was how to prove that his client didn’t have a motive for the killing. “He saw Miss French, infatuated with the good-looking young man, hunting about for pretexts that should bring him to her house.” Incidentally, Janet Mackenzie, her maid declared that her mistress was a good woman of business, transacting her own affairs without needing any assistance. Her bankers gave a similar testimony. The bombshell hits with the revelation that Miss French had left a will in which Vole was the principal beneficiary. Further complications. Vole had been with her the night she was murdered and needs an alibi which is where Romaine Vole/Heilger comes in. Would the testimony of a devoted wife gain credence? If she is going to be a witness for the defence she needed to confirm Vole’s story of being at home when the murder was supposed to have been committed. Mayherne describes her as a strange woman who made him feel uneasy. She was too calm and composed when she should perhaps have been agitated and anxious. Her vehemence is shown when she tells the solicitor how much she hates Vole. “I hate him. I hate him. I hate him. I hate him. I would like to see him hanged by the neck till he is dead.” Everything hangs by a thread. How can Mayherne convince the court and jury that his client is innocent if his wife wants him dead? A difficult one. It’s worth reading it first before looking at the t.v. version available from the BBC and Amazon or the earlier film version. Publisher: Harper Collins …ISBN: 978-0008201-258 there is a paperback TV tie-in edition available.

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. The only professional computer help that comes from over 39 years’ experience and a University education. You can contact me for an appointment at my workshop or I can come to you, by calling 689 892 745 or by Email: canducomputing@hotmail. co.uk. Having re-read a number of article it occurred to me that I seem to offer advice on PC’s and Windows environments. So today I am talking about hunting down hardware issues on the Mac family of computers using programs that come with, but not part of, your operating system. Most problems that you get are software related (a file might be corrupted and not doing what is was originally designed to do). In which case your best bet might be to just reinstall your macOS. If that fails, though, the problem could be hardware-related. Happily, Apple offers tools outside the operating system that can scan your computer and diagnose hardware problems. If your Mac is acting up, and you can’t find a software solution, these tools make troubleshooting a lot easier. Intel Macs built before June 2013 offer a program called the Apple Hardware Test; Macs built since then offer Apple Diagnostics. The two tools serve basically the same function, testing hardware and reporting back any problems. They’re also triggered by the same keyboard shortcut, so you don’t need to look up when your Mac was made to use one tool or the other. To get started, shut your Mac down. Ideally you should unplug any external hardware, like USB hard drives or

Ethernet connections. Next, turn your Mac on, holding down the “D” key. Depending on when your Mac was made, one of two things will happen. 1. You will see a logo as the test program starts. From hear you will click on the tab marked ‘Hardware Testing’ and then there is a button marked ‘Test’. Nothing of any great challenge there then! At the end you hill have a list of error codes that you will have to look up (via ‘Google’ or similar search engine) before knowing what to do next. If your Mac was made after December 2013, your Mac will load Apple Diagnostics. This tool is functionally similar to Apple Hardware Test, but instead of the retro macOS look, it feels like you never quite left the boot screen. You might be asked to pick a language, or the test might start immediately. The test might take a while, especially if you’ve got a lot of memory installed. When it’s done, you’ll get a list of potential hardware problems. Unlike the Apple Hardware Test, Apple Diagnostics gives you a plain language explanation of your problems and from the test results I’ve seen these explanations are pretty clear! As said earlier, this tool will let you know about any hardware problems your Mac has, but won’t actually fix them. Exact repair tips are way outside the scope of this article, because there are thousands of things that might be broken, but if your Mac is still under warranty or AppleCare, you can write the codes down and share them with a technician at the Apple Store. If your Mac is out of warranty, however, you need to look into repair options on your own.

No need to part with 1000’s of pounds / Euros of your hard earned savings in advance Don’t leave your loved ones with problems in a foreign country

´Living in Spain´? If so then there is obviously a chance you may die here, whether you want to or not. Statistics show that almost 20% of men die before they reach 65 years? And those who reach 65 years then have a 50/50 chance to live an additional 17 years. There are many pre funeral arrangements you can choose from. In the UK many people have life insurance policies but they are slow to pay out at death. But as funerals in the UK can take place many weeks after death there is not a problem with funeral payment. In Spain however it is very different. Funerals usually take place within days of death and payment has to be made before the funeral. It is therefore wise to have your Spanish funeral arrangements in place. In Spain over 22 million people have funeral insurance. That´s a massive amount of people and tells you that funeral insurance is affordable, trustworthy and dependable. Unfortunately, some British based funeral plans who accost people at shopping centres, know that

Whether their skyreflective waters appear to be flowing into the ocean, tumbling down a hillside, or flooding adjacent woodlands, infinity-edge pools always make a grand statement. Infinity pools, or edgeless pools, are designed to look as if they lack a wall on one side. This opens them to pleasing sight lines, creating the illusion that water is moving without obstruction from the pool’s interior toward the horizon. Infinity pools go by a

number of descriptors, including vanishingedge, disappearing pool, flooded-edge, waterfalledge, knife-edge, and eternity pool. They are designed with a weir wall on one of the pool’s outer sides. Water flows over and showers down the weir wall into a gutter system or catch basin outfitted with a pump system that circulates the water back into the infinity pool. Because of their exact engineering and construction requirements, even

small infinity pools are very expensive to build, with costs dependent on your site, choice of materials, and pool size. Maintenance costs are higher than other types of in-ground pools because of the added pump system. Cleaning chores are doubled due to the spacious catch basin and added pump system, both of which require regular attention, it’s advisable to get a registered pool cleaner to do weekly visits to maintain a healthy pool.

HOUSE CLEARANCE BAR CLEARANCE

Here, a simple pergola creates gives this small garden landscaping a grand feel. Arbors and pergolas are classic small yard landscaping ideas and great ways to frame a view, but you can do the same with shrubs, small trees, or even pieces of garden art. An arbor makes a charming addition to any patio. Not only does it help provide a focal point, but if you place it strategically, your arbor can also create an entrance or add privacy.

Few things go hand-in-hand in the garden like roses and arbors. Look for the climbing roses best adapted to your area -- not all roses grow well in all regions. Selecting the right rose will make your garden easier to keep up. Just like it can enhance a patio, the right arbor can add drama to your deck. Keep the style and scale of your structure consistent with the rest of your deck for an extra-special, beautiful relaxing area.

FIVE COMMON SITUATIONS IN SPAIN THAT CAN ONLY BE RESOLVED RETROSPECTIVELY

Spanish building licences are notoriously difficult; painstakingly slow to obtain and you can never be sure if they might be rejected. Here are 5 common situations that can only be resolved using a simple Certificate of Antiquity or Retrospective Licence. ONE: Planning Laws for detached properties make garages, permanent carports, or any kind of roofed buildings that are violating the minimum required distance to the plot´s boundaries a reason to decline a license. National planning laws for detached properties require a minimum distance between a window and a neighbour’s boundary of 2 metres. Regional and local laws may allow between 3 to even 5 metres or more, there are many variables depending on different factors. A Certificate of Antiquity is the only document that can previous works unobjectionable for the planning department at the Town Hall. TWO: Most glass or bricked enclosed terraces and porches are built without a proper licence. Spanish properties traditionally tend to have patios and courtyards, along with semi-opened spaces like porches and partially covered terraces to provide shelter from the sun and maximise on the outdoor lifestyle. These semi-opened spaces are physically easily closed-in, but the bureaucracy is not as easy. These works, however small you might consider them, are adding to the registered square meters of the property and often permissions are declined. A Certificate of Antiquity is the only document that can make these works unobjectionable for the planning department at the Town Hall and can also be used for updating the Title Deeds. THREE: Rarely do we find a swimming pool that has been correctly declared in the property’s Title Deeds or have the correct type of license. Of the small percentage of pools that do have a license, most often than not, they’re missing the Certificate by the Architect to sign off on the completion. Nowadays a Certificate of Antiquity is the only document that can be used in order to add a pool into the property’s “Escritura” Title Deeds. Those with a building licence alone is not sufficient. FOUR: Any shed, exterior built cupboard, semi-opened kitchen and other covered buildings or works such as a carport, must have a proper Major Licence “Licencia Mayor” when the interior height measures over 1.5 metres. This means the paperwork and legal fees for obtaining a licence can well exceed the cost of actually doing the building works itself. Only one Certificate of Antiquity or Retrospective Licence is enough to cover all the extensions done, on any scale. FIVE: Underbuilds with living accommodations are rarely done with the correct licences and again, these can only be added to the Title Deeds using a Retrospective Licence. A Certificate of Antiquity/Retrospective Licence is the only document that can prevent prosecution for any interior alterations done at the property or alterations that don’t meet the planning standards. In all those scenarios the document needed is a Certificate of Antiquity also known as a Retrospective Licence. Once issued, this document acts as licence, protecting the owner against possible sanctions from the Town Hall or can be highly recommended to avoid putting off potential buyers due to the existence of illegal extensions in the property. It will also be needed on completion of the sale in order to update the property’s description in Title Deeds & Land Registry. •In Murcia area, the condition in order to obtain a Retrospective Licence is that the building work already done is a minimum of 4 years old. •In Almeria area, the building work needs to be over 6 years old •In Alicante area, the building work needs to be over 4 years old, before the 20th August of 2014 Only building work that hasn’t been fined or objected or can use a certificate of antiquity to protect against any future fines. Only properly qualified and registered Spanish Architects are permitted to issue Retrospective Licences, so if your solicitors are studying your case, ask them to contact Martinez de la Casa Architects to provide the Antiquity Certificate and we will make the whole process easier, faster and cheaper with our fixed published prices and guaranteed deadlines. Banco Popular offering zero deposit mortgages

In a bid to shift repossessed new build apartments, Spanish lender Banco Popular is offering a zero-deposit mortgage that also gives “cashback” to buyers up to 13pc of the property’s value. In other words, a mortgage of up to 113pc of the property price. Properties are available across the country. An apartment complex in Costa del Sol, for example, is being sold off piecemeal, including a £68,000 two-bedroom flat

and £172,000 four‑bedroom penthouse. The 113pc loanto-value mortgage therefore reportedly lends an extra £22,360 on the four-bedroom penthouse without asking for a penny in equity. The mortgage tracks European interbank rate “Euribor” plus 0.9pc for the first year, rising to 2.39pc plus Euribor afterwards. By comparison, most Spanish mortgages tend to require a minimum 30pc deposit and

interest rates start from 2pc above Euribor. Unlike mainstream mortgages, these loans only apply to particular homes. Buyers can choose from a handful of Spanish apartments – all of which have been repossessed from bankrupt property developers and are now owned by the bank. “People view it as free money,” says Tim French of Iberian Properties, an estate agent and mortgage broker

based in Spain. “I try not to market too many of these properties, as there are risks involved. “Over the last five years there have been a lot more British buyers interested in these types of deals, I think mainly because sterling was weaker, and interest rates are also low.” “The bank wants to get rid of these properties. It lent aggressively to developers before 2007, but when

the credit crunch hit, their developments didn’t sell. When their valuations dropped, these properties ended up having mortgages higher than their value.” Banco Popular, the fifth-largest Spanish bank by deposits, has set up an online property portal, Aliseda, to market the homes. The properties are also being snapped up by investment firms to market to British people interested in buy‑to‑let.

Heat Your Pool With Solar Power

You can heat your pool using solar power. Your pool system already includes the pump, controller, and filter, along with PVC pipes that route the water flow. Simply break into the PVC line after the filter and run a couple of flex hoses (or PVC, if you prefer) to the solar collector panel, which you can lay out on the ground or set against a hill to achieve some tilt toward the sun. When the valve is closed, water runs exclusively through the solar collector panel, heating the water. As you open the valve, less water flows through the collector panel. In this way, you can adjust how much heat is going into your pool. Solar collector panels are available at most pool supply stores. You can get a 4 ft. x 20 ft. panel and flex hoses are needed too. Sometimes adaptors are necessary. Place the solar collector panel where it sees the most sunlight when the pool pump is running. If you place the solar collector panel on your roof, try to minimize resistance to the water flow. Keep the solar panel out of the wind as much as possible. For best heating results, run the pool pump during the sunniest time of the day; running it longer will result in more heat in the pool. If you want to use two or more solar collector panels, connect them in parallel. The general rule is to use a total collector surface area that’s about half the

surface area of your pool. But this varies quite a bit. Sizing your collector surface area depends on a number of factors: The pump’s running time: The longer it’s on, the more heat you collect in the pool for a given collector size. Pool location: If you have an aboveground pool, the heat loss is much greater. You need a collector with more surface area. Solar potential when the pump is on: Note how your solar panels are oriented. How much sunlight do you get? Wind: If you have a lot of wind, your collectors will run inefficiently unless they are glazed. If you don’t have any kind of swimming pool heater, your useable season may be around six months of the year. If you install a swimming pool heating system, you can get nine months. This explains the popularity of pool heaters. In a full-scale, professional-grade swimming pool solar system, when the pump is on, the controller decides whether to activate the solar collectors by measuring the temperature at the collectors and the temperature of the pool water. When heat’s available at the collector, the motor valve opens, and the pump moves water up into the collectors and back down to the swimming pool.

Chilli miso lamb cutlets

The Great British Bake Off to return to TV screens in 2017 The Great British Bake Off will return to television screens this year, it has been confirmed, after the BBC agreed to waive its right to force Channel 4 to hold off until 2018 at the earliest. The BBC, which lost the rights to the programme last September after its rival broadcaster bid a reported £25m per year, said it wished the show well. The source said: “In this instance, we believe it would be undignified to have one public service broadcaster in a potential dispute with another and the associated costs for each party would ultimately come out of programming budgets. We don’t believe in driving up costs in the public sector.” A BBC spokesperson said the broadcaster would not “use its hold back clause against C4 and Love Productions in relation to Bake Off and its associated shows”. She added: “We wish the programme well for the future and look forward to seeing who is cast on the show. The BBC is proud of the part it has played in growing and nurturing the programme – doing that is at the core of what the BBC does. We have many exciting projects for the future. Watch this space.”

GREAT FUN NIGHT OUT

Miso is another central ingredient in Japanese cooking. It’s made by fermenting soybeans with salt and koji (a fungus), along with various other ingredients that differ from one region of Japan to another. The enzymes and bacteria in miso act as brilliant tenderisers of meat or fish. Gochujang is a fiery, fermented soybean paste from Korea: buy it in large supermarkets or Asian stores. Please don’t trim the meat off the lamb bones – it goes all crisp when cooked, and is the best bit. If you can brave the cold, barbecue your lamb over charcoal: there’s something gloriously decadent about setting light to a barbecue in winter, though you may get odd looks from the neighbours. Serves two. For the chilli miso marinade 40ml mirin 15g sugar 100g miso 15g gochujang chilli paste For the chilli miso sauce 80g chilli miso marinade (see above) 20ml sake For the lamb 4 lamb cutlets 1 tbsp chilli miso sauce

First make the marinade. Heat the mirin and sugar in a small saucepan until the sugar dissolves, take off the heat, and mix in the miso and chilli paste. Rub 80g of the marinade (the rest will go into the sauce) into the lamb, and refrigerate overnight. Now make the sauce: gently heat the sake in a small saucepan until the alcohol has evaporated, leaving only the liquid behind, then stir in the rest of the marinade and leave to cool. The next day, heat the oven to 200C/390F/gas mark 6. Lay the cutlets on a rack, so the hot air in the oven can circulate all around them, and roast for eight minutes for medium rare with nicely charred edges (cook for longer if you prefer your lamb more well done). Serve with a big dollop of the miso sauce and a mound of the following pickle. Namasu salad We Japanese love our pickles, and this very simple one is a delicious introduction to how we make them. makes enough to fill a small jam jar, and it will keep for up to a month.

100ml rice vinegar 10g salt 30g sugar 200g daikon 200g carrots 1 red chilli, deseeded and cut into very thin slices Gently stir the vinegar, salt and sugar in a small saucepan until the salt and sugar dissolve, then turn off the heat and leave to cool. Peel the daikon and cut it first into 8cm chunks and then into 1cm-thick slices. Peel the carrots and cut into 8cm-long pieces. Set a mandoline to its thinnest setting (ie, about 0.5mm), and cut both into long, thin strips. Put all the sliced daikon, carrots and chilli into a sterilised jar or Tupperware pot, pour over the cold vinegar mix, seal and leave to cure at least overnight. Serve cold.

What crisis: Grow homegrown veg shortage: the best approach to filling your fridge – and eating your fill – is to be guided by flavour. This means scouring the veg aisles for what looks most vibrant. Flavour stems from vibrancy, and locally grown, seasonal produce is always going to be where it’s at. As Jane Scotter of biodynamic farm Fern Verrow puts it: “Things only taste good when grown in the right conditions and climate. I never buy lettuce or tomatoes out of season because they just don’t taste that good.” And what is good in Blighty

right now are brassicas, leeks and root veg – swede, potatoes, celeriac, beets … Spring greens are coming into their own and purple sprouting broccoli – infinitely superior in flavour, according to organic farm Riverford’s Guy Watson, to the calabrese variety that the Spanish frosts have depleted – is mere weeks away from hitting our shelves. So it’s all about making do and being creative. And we’ve got the goods for you right here. Serves 4: 1 large savoy cabbage, 20ml olive oil. A small knob of butter, plus extra for greasing

Rationing of any kind is always likely to make people sit up straight – the idea that we can’t buy as much of whatever we’d like causes instant consternation, even if it is iceberg lettuce. It causes some understandable confusion, too, in this case, as being only allowed three heads of the stuff prompts the question why you would ever want that many – of all the veg to pick from, iceberg has got to be up there with the least flavoursome items nature has ever come up with. This wholesome Vietnamese noodle soup recipe uses the slow-cooker to make a richly flavoured stock for its base. Equipment and preparation: For this recipe, you will need a medium-sized electric slow-cooker. This meal provides 447 kcal, 58g protein, 43g carbohydrate (of which 3.5g sugars), 3g fat (of which 0.7g saturates), 1g fibre and 4g salt per portion. Ingredients 1 onion, peeled, finely chopped, 4 garlic cloves, halved, 20g/¾oz fresh root

ginger, peeled, thinly sliced, 2 long fresh red chillies, sliced (or 1 tsp dried chilli flakes), 1 tsp Chinese five-spice powder, 4 tbsp dark soy sauce, plus extra to serve. 1kg-1.2kg/2lb 4oz-2lb 10oz whole chicken, 1 tbsp Thai fish sauce (nam pla), 200g/7oz dried flat rice noodles. To serve 6 spring onions, trimmed and thinly sliced, 100g/3½oz beansprouts, rinsed and drained, 25g/1oz fresh coriander sprigs 1 long red chilli, thinly sliced, 1 lime, cut into wedges.

Quick recipe for ice-cream sundaes

For the caramel sauce 150g double cream, 1 vanilla pod, 4 tbsp water, 250g caster sugar, 4 tbsp golden syrup, 1 tsp lemon juice, ¼ tsp fleur de sel, 75g unsalted butter To assemble 2 blood oranges, 500ml tub of good-quality vanilla ice‑cream. 1 For the caramel sauce, put the cream and vanilla extract into a large, heavybased pan. Put the water, sugar and golden syrup into another large, heavy-

based pan. Have the other ingredients measured and ready to go. 2 First heat the cream and vanilla. Keep an eye on it as it can bubble over quite easily. Meanwhile, start heating the water, sugar and golden syrup – don’t stir it, but you can swirl the pan if necessary – all the while keeping an eye on the vanilla cream. As soon as the cream starts to bubble rapidly, turn the heat off. 3 Once the sugar mixture starts to colour, give it a few

swirls. You want the sugar to turn golden brown and then almost black. When you see a wisp of smoke starting to rise out of the pan, you know it’s done. Take the sugar off the heat and immediately whisk in the vanilla cream. Stir in the lemon juice, salt and butter, mixing until smooth. Allow the caramel to cool completely, then remove the vanilla pod, transfer to a plastic tub with a tight fitting lid and put it in the fridge to chill. 4 Use a small serrated

knife to supreme the blood oranges, trimming the peel and pith from the outside of the oranges while keeping the fruit intact. Carefully section them, cutting the segments out from the membrane. Put the segments in a bowl. Squeeze the remaining membrane, adding the juices to the bowl. 5 Place two generous scoops of ice-cream into each sundae glass. Top with the orange sections, a drizzle of caramel sauce.

He appears to have been well looked after, but has obviously been lost and with no microchip found, we do not know his owners. He is well house trained, is very good on a lead and when left to roam freely within boundaries. He would make an excellent family dog.

Sicily is ringed by the sparkling Mediterranean

Sicily is the largest of the Italian islands, separated from the Continent by the Strait of Messina and surrounded by the Ionian, the Tyrrhenian and the Mediterranean Seas. It is one of the pearls of Southern Italy and can be discovered, understood and experienced through a series of itineraries dedicated to areas of interest ranging from nature to history and traditions. Nature seems to have endowed all its wonders to this land: mountains, hills and above all the sea, with its incredible colours, its crystal-clear water and the beauty of its sea beds, in no way inferior to those of other seas. Here, the Mediterranean Sea, with its many little islands scattered around the coasts of Sicily - The Aeolians, Egadi and Pelagie Islands, Pantelleria and Ustica offers unique and the intense sceneries, scents and flavours of uncontaminated nature. Last but not least, its great volcanoes are symbols of the irresistible beauty and vitality of this incredibly charming region. Fascination for this region grows with treasured archaeological sites that tell the story of the ancient origins of Trinacria (ancient name for Sicily). The provinces of the region are: Palermo (regional capital), Agrigento, Catania, Caltanissetta, Enna, Messina, Ragusa, Siracusa and Trapani.

Guide

Ultimate Sicily

The Aeolian Islands

Experience Sicily

Sicily’s Aeolian Islands are slowly creeping into the spotlight, and for good reason. With its whitewashed villages and olive groves, the rocky islet of Salina is the epitome of rustic Italia. Then there’s Stromboli, which fashion designers, Dolce and Gabbana, call home. Finally, you’ve got Vulcano, where the big draws are the mineralrich mud baths. Ferries to all three islands run from Milazzo harbour – around 40 minutes’ drive from Taormina.

Those wanting to travel even further back in time will be content to see the Greek Temples of Selinunte and Syracuse, as well as those of Agrigento and of Imera. Not to be forgotten is the Greco-Roman theatre of Taormina and the cathedrals left by the Normans, especially the Martorana, San Giovanni degli Eremiti and San Cataldo Churches. If its customs and traditions you’re looking for, a visit to Acireale is practically obligatory; there one can see the Opera of Marionettes and the story of Orlando Furioso. There is plenty of choice for those who enjoy festivals and cultural events, too. Countless events take place every year in the amazing scenery of Taormina’s Ancient Theater, including the well-known Cinema Festival, an award ceremony for the best films. The undisputed ruler of this ancient and beautiful land is undoubtedly the sea, that can be enjoyed in so many different ways: relaxing on one of the many coastal beaches, exploring the wonderful sea beds, or windsurfing and kitesurfing with the waves and the wind. Here, the power of the sea, together with that of the wind, allows for the opportunity to feel the thrill of “running” or even “flying” over the crystal-clear waters of the coasts of San Vito lo Capo, Mondello, Cefalù, Marina di Ragusa, Taormina, the Aeolian Islands, Pantelleria, Lampedusa, and Ustica, just some of the many places where one can practice these sports year-round. Trekking lovers can go on a guided excursion along the routes of Sicily’s natural parks, while those who prefer other means can choose to explore these wonderful places on a horse’s back or riding a mountain bike.

It is easy to understand why Malaga City is capital of the Costa del Sol. Once considered the poor cousin of Andalusia’s capital city, Seville, it now competes successfully for attention, thanks to its profusion of quirky museums, delightful pedestrianised centre, innovative restaurants and stylish hotels, many featuring trendy rooftop terraces with bar, pool and stunning views. Muelle Uno is a contemporary leisure complex in the port - while a new arty district called SOHO is bringing a bohemian edge to the city. Motoring Roundup SolTimes

Tesla Model 3 will launch on schedule in 2017 Tesla will reportedly start to build pre-production versions of the its $35,000 mass-market Model 3 sedan in a few weeks. The automaker plans to launch the Model 3 in late 2017 and begin fulfilling 373,000 preorders for the vehicle through 2018; customers put down $1,000 each after the Model unveiling in March 2016 for the privilege of waiting two years or more to take delivery of their car. Because Tesla was three years late launching its last vehicle, the Model X SUV, speculation has been rampant that the Model 3 will suffer similar delays. Everyone also

now knows that the Model X’s complicated design and troubled initial production created a hellish situation for Tesla CEO Elon Musk and his team. Memories of that struggle have fueled views that Tesla will make Model 3 customers wait and wait and wait some more to get their cars. But those fears are misplaced. In fact, Tesla is on now on track to potentially launch the Model 3 ahead of schedule. Initial production is slated for July, assuming that Tesla can organize its main supply chain and not have to be waiting on parts.

Model 3 test-builds will commence on February 20, as widely reported. Initial production is slated for July, assuming that Tesla can organize its supply chain and not have to wait on parts. Test building will help the carmaker refine the Model 3 design and isolate any quality control issues. It will also demonstrate whether a simpler design for the Model 3 will enable production at the scale Musk needs to meet pre-orders and push toward a 500,000-per-year run rate by 2018 (not all those vehicles would be Model 3s, of course, but the 3 is expected to consume the bulk of Tesla’s future manufacturing capacity). There will be obvious signs of whether Tesla is on track. In March and April, we should start to spot prototype Model 3s in the wild, undergoing realworld road trials. Tesla will also have to give the government several Model 3s for crash testing. And production versions of the vehicle will appear at Tesla’s stores, to stoke interest and reassure Model 3 pre-order customers that their cars are on the way.

The Model 3 in terms of features and performance may not be unveiled until the car’s launch. But that launch could happen in short order, in production fires up in July.

Easier to build

The Model 3, unlike the Model S and X, will use steel rather than aluminium in its construction, which will simplify Tesla’s manufacturing process. Early indications are that the carmaker may streamline some interior components, such as the instrumentation.

Every Model 3 will come with Enhanced Autopilot hardware, but there’s nothing exotic about cameras and sensors. And Tesla isn’t going to use a battery or powertrain setup that’s substantially different from what it already has on the Models S and X.

Tesla Makes First Foray Into Middle East

Tesla TSLA +4.22% Inc.’s co-founder and chief executive, Elon Musk , launched the company’s electric vehicles in the United Arab Emirates on Monday. This was the Californian company’s first foray in the Middle East, which is potentially a big market for its luxury cars and sport-utility vehicles. The electric car maker will accept online orders for its Model S sedan and Model X SUV, Tesla said in a

statement, deliveries of which are expected to start this summer. Tesla is among the world’s fastestgrowing car manufacturers, with sales rising 27% on the year in the fourth quarter of 2016. It still fell narrowly short of its goal of delivering at least 80,000 vehicles in 2016, mainly due to delays related to new hardware for Autopilot, which is the cars semiautonomous driving feature.

The Boys Are Back

The first season of The Grand Tour has been and gone, marking Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond’s return to making shows about cars. it was a epic triumph!!! “Looking good is more important than looking where you’re going,” Clarkson says, before stepping into the beautiful Alfa Romeo 4C. It was a gag about how un-Roger Moore he looked, much to the amusement of Richard Hammond and James May, but it struck a chord. Having watched every episode of The Grand Tour and digested all 13 courses, it was a case of Copenhagen fine dining. We came up with a list of the great and the room for improvement. The Focus RS, new

Mustang, BMW M2, second-hand Maseratis – cars many of us could afford or aspire to. Clarkson banging on about the new Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio (the actual name) was a truly heartfelt piece, which looped back to his love (and ours) for the 4C. It was glorious and as good as most of his old stuff. Well, maybe not the Reliant Robin that tips over constantly. James May did the Ford GT40 justice in his retrospective. It was well written, thorough, beautifully shot (like almost all of The Grand tour, to be fair) and hugely entertaining. The BMW M2 review by Clarkson was also excellent and a reminder that, while the need to pen car reviews is long gone for him, he is

yet to lose touch. For us and probably many viewers, the challenges are fun to watch and we enjoy the silly humour when done right, but finding out Clarkson, May and Hammond’s opinion of a new car on the block is what really draws people in and season 1 highlighted this nicely. It was, however, the environment episode and Clarkson’s attempt at a crossover that stood out. Hammond’s plantbased car falling apart, May constantly having to rebuild his car from mud, the MG B body falling off every five seconds and the alternative subtitles of what Chelsea football team thought of his Mercedes-based creation – this was classic, and truly can’t wait for season 2!!!.

What Does Wenger’s Future Hold?

After Arsenal’s humiliating 5-1 defeat by Bayern Munich in the Champions League, there have been fresh questions about manager Arsene Wenger’s future. But with a new contract offer remaining on the table, what is the situation around their manager of almost 21 years? For Arsenal, 2016-17 is turning into a carbon copy of the past six seasons and even resembles the four before that. The difference now is that it could genuinely spell the end for Arsene Wenger. Wednesday’s defeat has badly stung the 67-year-old Frenchman and senior figures at the club, while the anger, pain and disillusionment among supporters is stronger than ever.

Carter Sorry

Former New Zealand fly-half Dan Carter has apologised for “a massive error of judgement” after reports he was stopped for drink-driving by police in Paris. Three times a World Player of the Year, the 34-year-old plays for Racing 92 in the French capital. It has been cited that a police source as saying he was found to be over the limit after a roadside test, but was not arrested or detained. “I’ve let down my club, fans and most importantly my family,” Carter said. He added “I am sure a lot of you have seen the headlines. No excuses.

£85m Bid For Muller

Bayern Munich turned down an offer of more than €100m (£85m)

from Manchester United for Thomas Muller last summer, according to the

Neuer Rejects Reports

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has dismissed reports that he could be joining Manchester City. City No 1 Claudio Bravo has struggled this season, leading to speculation that Etihad boss Pep Guardiola will seek to replace him with Germany keeper Neuer in the summer. Guardiola worked

with Neuer - generally regarded as one of world’s finest keepers - for three years at Bayern before joining Man City last Summer. “It honours me that there’s speculation and talk about it. “Pep still has my phone number, but he hasn’t called me, so that’s Ok” said Neuer.

German club’s executive vice-chairman JanChristian Dreesen. The offer for the Germany international came when Jose Mourinho took over at Old Trafford after replacing Louis van Gaal. Mourinho brought Eric Bailly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Paul Pogba to United for a combined total of more than £145m before the 2016-17 season. Muller has endured an indifferent season, scoring just four goals.
