International Airport in Corvera, there has been considerable scepticism in the press. Immediately doubts were raised over the comments made by Pedro Rivera, the minister for Development in the regional government.

There are still reports that Aena are still demanding 35 million euros in compensation for closing San Javier, and that until this payment is guaranteed the closure plan will not be approved.

The signing off of the closure proposals and the tendering of the new management contract at Corvera may not be as imminent as Pedro Rivera suggested, none of the parties involved believes that it is feasible for both San Javier and Corvera to be operative at the same time. 51% of Aena is still owned by the State, the remaining 49% of shares are privately owned.

Spain to consider using drones

UNMANNED drones could be used to patrol Spain’s borders with Morocco at Ceuta and Melilla.

The interior ministry’s secretary for security Jose Antonio Nieto has confirmed interest in introducing airborne surveillance along the borders of the Spanish enclaves.

It comes just days after hundreds of migrants stormed into the country

from Morocco by scaling the border fences.

Last month a border officer lost an eye when a 1,100 strong group stormed the fences.

Nieto has since personally visited Aeorum, a leading drone developer in Spain, to discuss the idea.

The drones would be equipped with heat-detecting cameras which would give early warnings of groups

gathering to mount an offence at the border.

Despite Spain erecting high fences topped with razor and barbed wire, they are still being climbed over by migrants desperate to reach European soil.

Some 850 have managed to enter the country so far this month. Spain has been met with criticism by leading human rights groups for its treatment of migrants.

With hearts and roses all around, not to mention the chocolate fountain, it was another very successful event, raising 928 euros for

the children.

Once again, there was a Mediterranean cruise as 1st prize in the raffle, and this was won by Irene Late from Guardamar (pictured).

The next charity night at this venue is on Wednesday, 22nd March, when Woody will be entertaining.

Tickets for Woody always sell out well in advance, so early booking is advised.

Arrests made The National Police have arrested five people, aged between 25 and 45, in Almoradí, Rojales and Crevillente, who organised underground fights between dogs of potentially dangerous breeds. This is a macro-operation launched against animal abuse that has been carried out in Madrid, Murcia, Tenerife and Alicante. In the Vega Baja the detentions took place last week. The operation was carried out by the Environment Group of the Unit of Specialised and Violent Crime (UDEV) of the Judicial Police.

The illegal fights were organised by a group that supplied anabolic steroids to the dogs and was financed in part with the traffic of narcotics.

The police confiscated more than 350 marijuana plants and 56 dogs. They also removed about 20,000 euros in cash, a pistol, a revolver, drugs for doping, four high-end cars and three motorcycles.

The National Police has rescued 230 potentially dangerous dogs trained and destined to participate in fights.

Bird Flu Outbreak Spain has reported a case of the highly contagious H5N8 bird flu virus in a north-eastern farm in Catalonia and said it will cull 17,000 ducks, the regional government confirmed. The Central Veterinarian Laboratory in Algete, in the outskirts of Madrid, announced, the outbreak was at a duck farm near Girona. Another H5N8 strain was reported due to a dead stork in a nearby area. Nine farms in total are currently under investigation in Catalonia as a precautionary measure.

The H5N8 strain, which is deadly for poultry but has not been found in humans, has spread across Europe and the Middle East since last year.

Spain could deliver savings in Peugeot-Opel deal

As the only European country where carmaker PSA’s production overlaps with that of Opel, Spain could deliver the quick cost savings sought by PSA boss Carlos Tavares to convince investors to back his planned acquisition of the rival brand.

Between them, PSA - maker of Peugeots and Citroens and General Motors (NYSE: GM - news) ‘ Opel operate three Spanish factories that employ about 13,000 people in total.

Production at the smallest, PSA’s 1950s-era Villaverde plant in Madrid, is running at well below capacity.

Alzheimer´s Society

Damien was accompanied by his Vice Captain, Norman Bradbury and they met three representatives

of the organisation who accepted the gift on behalf of the Alzheimer´s charity.

The Captain would like to thank all the members of the Sierra Golf Society for their generosity over the year and he knows that the money will be put to good use by this worthwhile organisation.

Its dependence on only one car model has fuelled fears among workers that its output could be absorbed by the French firm’s larger factory in Vigo or Opel’s site in Zaragoza under a combined group, union sources said.

The union sources cautioned, however, that nothing was clear cut because Villaverde’s productivity per worker was high compared with elsewhere in Europe, and labour costs low.

When asked whether the plant could be closed after the proposed acquisition of Opel, a source at PSA in Spain said it was too soon

to assess the effect of a potential deal.

The Villaverde factory has narrowly escaped closure in recent years thanks to a contract to exclusively produce the Citroen C4 Cactus. It is due to assemble the C4’s next incarnation from the end of this year or early 2018.

But with production of the Cactus having fallen in 2016 as demand waned, forcing 1,300 of its around 1,700 staff to take temporary reductions in their hours, Villaverde is operating at around 40 percent of its capacity, analysts estimate.

If the PSA-Opel deal goes through, shifting Villaverde’s production to Zaragoza or Vigo would raise capacity utilisation at the combined group’s factories to 85 percent from around 70 percent now, according to Reuters calculations.

The calculations were based on the analysts’ estimate of Villaverde utilisation and figures from PSA and Opel sources on utilisation at the Zaragoza and Vigo plants.

PSA and Opel declined to comment on any of the figures. Despite some European layoffs expected in a PSA-Opel deal, the bulk

of savings could come from pooling vehicle platforms and engines, sources said.

This could make the Zaragoza and Vigo plants the model for how a combined PSA and Opel group will seek to operate across Europe, as both already host an alliance between the two firms.

Opel’s Zaragoza plant, Figueruelas, will start churning out PSA’s latest C3 Picasso model after the summer, the first of three cars to be produced using a shared production platform. Vigo will take on the production of the Opel Combo utility car next year.

With just a few months to go before the round £1 coin is withdrawn from circulation, it’s time to check your pockets.

That shiny £1 coin you left in your shorts from last summer could be worth a tidy little sum.

Coin collectors are racing to complete the full set of 24 individual designs for the old coin – with the most rare expected to fetch as much as £25 each.

The Bank of England is introducing a 12-sided coin next month, and has already begun to phase out the old round design.

Is that £1 coin in your pocket worth £25? Check the ‘scarcity index’ to see if you’re minted.

The £1 coin has been in circulation since 1983. During that time a total of 2.2 billion £1 have been struck for circulation. But they are not all still in use.

The last available figures for coins in circulation, published by The Royal Mint for 2014, suggest that 1,553,000,000 £1 coins are in circulation.

In other words, 650 million of the coins struck no longer circulate, presumably withdrawn over the years as worn or damaged. Research suggests that only a little more than half of the early years’ £1 coins are still in circulation.

The Spanish health authority determines what treatment is considered necessary and cannot wait until your return to the UK. The EHIC also covers you for treatment of preexisting medical conditions, although it does not cover you if you are travelling for the express purpose of obtaining medical treatment. The EHIC also covers you for routine maternity care provided the reason for your visit is not specifically to give birth.

Worrying news for people in developed countries who will be born in 2030. A new study suggests their life expectancy will exceed 90.

Only last year the World Health Organisation told us that, globally, “babies born in 2015 [could] expect to live to 71.4 years”, so that’s quite a jump we see here (although only for specific countries, most notably South Korea, which boasts the greatest longevity).

I dread to think what next year’s estimate will be, because life in your 90s is

not always much fun. My mother lived to 98. I would laugh if it wasn’t so serious. In the UK, our health and social care setups are going down the pan already. What state are they going to be in after 2030? I imagine 70- and 80-year-old children tottering around caring for their ancient parents. Unless they’re still working, because who can afford to be retired for 2530 years? I am frightened of death, but becoming almost more frightened of living to a very old age in this country.

Question: My partner of 7 years (not married) has recently deceased and he had left me his house in his will. The house he has left me is the house where we lived and it has a value of 240,000 euro. I am being told that I will have to pay over 80,000 euro in inheritance tax. Surely this cannot be correct.

Answer: This is unfortunately true. In Spain the inheritance tax is paid by the beneficiaries (not by the estate) and how much you pay depends on your relationship with the deceased.

Descendants and spouse in Andalucía are each entitled to receive up to 250,000 euro tax free (since 1st of January of 2017). (Residents of Andalucia or of an estate in Andalucia being received by a resident in another country of the European Union.) On the other hand if you are not married and are not family there are no exemptions whatsoever and to make things worse, after applying the sliding scale of inheritance tax rates, the final amount needs to be multiplied by two.

In your case estate planning was as simple as getting married and you would have paid no inheritance tax whatsoever. As things are, I am afraid there is no way of avoiding the payment for over 80,000 euro that you mention.

For today I would like to discuss password security. Not yours or mine but all these online places that require passwords (email, banks, etc). How many time recently have your heard that ‘Yahoo’, ‘Google’, or ‘Microsoft’ have been hacked and their list of passwords have been stolen? Should you be worried?

Well depending on their level of security the answer is either, ‘No’, ‘Yes’ or ‘Very’.

There are, in essence, 3 ways to store information: Plain text (easy to read – by anyone); Level 1 encrypted and obviously, level 2 encrypted. Encryption is simply taking something readable and substituting the words for something that looks like complete rubbish.

Now we need to look at how our information can be stored by them.

The first method of storing information is plain text, which is exactly what you are reading right now (not very secure, is it)! The second method is to take your password put it through a program that converts (hashes) it into a unique number and only store that number.

When you realise that a normal 8 digit password can be made up from 26 Capital letters, 26 Lower case letters, 10 (0-9) numbers, 8 or more punctuation, the final 8 character password makes for a lot of possible combinations.

The drawback is that if someone has

a set of ‘Rainbow’ tables (pre created tables of these ‘hashes’, then they will know that DFCD 3454 QT89 S000 means ‘Password’ and then they know your password! The benefit is that to find a single password can take a very long time!

In the case of a bank or somewhere where your information is extremely important they will put an additional string of characters, that they have calculated and is unique to that individual, onto your password. This is called ‘Salting’ and then make the ‘Rainbow’ tables useless. Without this process of decoding passwords becomes very slow.

As we have discussed in previous articles, all that is left is ‘brute force’ which involves comparing single characters, then 2 character combinations then 3 character combinations, and so on. To check all single character combinations will take a fraction of a second, 2 character combinations will take several seconds but a 6 character combination will take upto 1000 years to crack! If the bank now add another 6-8 characters onto the password, you can be assured that your information is safe!

So, when you read that an email provider / bank / anywhere else, has been compromised, should you immediately go defensive and change your passwords?

This is a difficult question to answer but my suggestion is this, If your password give access to sensitive information (bank, sensitive personal information), change the password immediately; Otherwise don’t worry too much about it. So until next time.

Expenses when selling a property in Spain When you sell your house you will need to pay tax to the Hacienda or tax office for the profits you will have made on the sale of your house.

The amount you pay and how you pay them will depend on which of the following categories you fall into.

Foreign non-residents: You are required to pay 20% on the profit from the sale of your house (the difference between what you declared when you bought the house and what you will declare when you sell the house). On the day that you complete on the sale you will be charged a flat rate of 3% on the full amount of the declared sale price (the amount shown in the escritura or title deed).

This amount will be deducted from the final money you will receive when you visit the Notary to complete on the sale of the property. (Buyers from non-resident sellers are required to withhold 3% of the total purchase price and pay it directly to the Spanish Tax Agency, usually through their lawyer or asesoria).

This 3% paid on the day of completion is a part payment of the amount of 20% to be paid on the profit made on the sale. You will be required to pay the remaining amount of the 20% on the profit when asked to by the tax office.

All non-residents are required to pay a 3% retention on the day of completion.

If the 20% on the profit works out to be less than the 3% on the full amount, it might be a good idea to ask your lawyer or asesoria to make an application to pay the 20% and then he can claim back the 3% already paid and just pay the lesser amount of 20%. He has one month after completion to make this application.

Foreign residents: To qualify and be treated as a Spanish resident requires you to have been living in Spain for 3 or more years and to be able to prove this, by providing the previous 3 years tax returns, an escritura in your name that is more than 3 years old or a certificate from your local town hall to say that you have been registered as living there for more than 3 years.

Why are Spanish house prices rising?

University professor and real estate expert Gonzalo Bernardos explains why Spanish house prices appear to be rising. Pointing out that the Spanish housing market is growing again after years of declines, with prices up 4% and sales up 14% over 12 months to the end of the second quarter, Bernardos explains the factors pushing up house prices, whilst assuring us that we are nowhere near another housing bubble, as all the key market variables like sales, prices, housing starts, and

housing affordability are still a long way from the levels reached in 2006 and 2007.

Prime property in the best areas could appreciate by as much as 50% by 2020.

Homes are relatively cheap. In real terms (after inflation) the majority of Spanish homes now cost half what they did in 2007, and are roughly back to what they were worth in 2002, before the boom got going. Bernardos says Spanish property is now a “magnificent opportunity”, which will probably appreciate in price. He

forecasts that Spanish house prices will rise by a further 12% in 2017.

available although the most inexpensive and versatile is sheet plastic, which can be cut to size and disguised by placing in a layer of straw or hessian before lining. How many plants will I need?

A general rule of thumb when creating a hanging basket is to use one plant per inch of basket diameter – so 12 plants per 30cm (12 inch) hanging basket. The only exception to this is when you use strong-growing plants such as Fuchsias and Geraniums (Pelargoniums). In this case it is best to only use 5 plants per 30cm (12 inch) hanging basket. Buy-to-let investors in big cities property boom

El Cabañal District, Valencia, where buy-to-let investors in the city are now 37% of the market The face of the Spanish housing market continues to change post-crisis as buyto-let investors now account for a third of the market in cities like Barcelona, Valencia and Madrid.

Buy-to-let is an increasingly a popular investment in Spain claims Tecnocasa – a franchise chain of estate agents with office all around the country – with rental investors now making up a third of the market in big Spanish cities like Barcelona, Madrid, and Valencia, according to company data based on sales handled by Tecnocasa.

Barcelona is the most popular city amongst buy-to-let investors, with 40% of sales made for that purpose, followed

by Valencia with 37%, and Madrid with 33%, all according to Tecnocasa data.

The national average is 26%, according to a recent article in the financial daily Expansión.

Recent research by the Spanish property portal Idealista reveals that rental returns have increased to an average of 6.1% gross (based on asking prices, not transaction prices), up from 5.5% a year ago. The provincial capital of Lleida, in Catalonia, offers the best yields with 7.7%, followed by Palma de Mallorca in the Balearics (6.7%), Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (6.5%), and Alicante, home to

the Costa Blanca (6.5%). Barcelona and Madrid both yield 5.5% based on asking prices.

Assuming rental asking prices are higher than actual prices, and that sales closing prices are lower but the all in costs are around the same once Spain’s high transaction costs are taken into account, then rental yields in Barcelona and Madrid would work out between 4% and 5% gross, and maybe 2% to 3% net. That’s not a very interesting yield in ordinary times, but these are not ordinary times. Local investors get a pittance on their savings in the banks, whilst fixed income and funds are all looking unattractive for one reason or another.

Given that Spanish property prices now look like they are on a recovery path, it’s not surprising that local investors are focusing on buy-to-let in the main cities, even if yields are nothing special.

1. Licencia de Obra Mayor (Major Work Licence) – you will need this licence if you are making structural changes to a house, or adding an extension or external building work such as swimming pool or garage. This can be obtained from your town hall planning department (Urbanismo).

The cost of this licence is usually around 5% of the total estimated cost – payable to the town hall.

Note that, if you plan to do the work yourself, you do need to include labour costs as well, based on the standard professional rate. Usually you will need to get an architect to draw up plans for the work to be carried out and these need to be approved by the College of Architects.

Building regulations depend on where the plot is and how it is classified – is it urban or rustic? (and if rustic whether

dry or irrigated). The amount you can build or extend will depend on local and/or regional rules for that specific area.

In Valencia, for example, you can build up to 2% or 200m2 on 10,000m2 of “Rustic” land. In our local town of Almunecar (Granada Province), there are some areas where you can build on 5,000m2 of rustic land, others where you need 15,000m2 (dependent on height above sea level) and in other towns nearby you can build on 2,500m2.

There are also general rules regarding keeping the appearance of the building – any extensions should be in keeping with the aesthetics of the current building or, if it is a construction on rural land, in keeping with the aesthetics of the area (stone house or Andaluz style cortijo etc). Again, these

limitations vary depending on where in Spain you are and the classification of the land. Regulations in urban areas are very different to those in rural areas and usually urban areas simply have set building rules, e.g. You need a plot of at least 400m2 and can generally build 25% of the plot (above road level – which is why you often see houses on stilts that are later closed in to make additional living space. In the old quarter of a town the build percentages are normally 100%.

2. Licencia de Obra Menor or Rehabilitacion (Minor Work Licence or Rehabilitation) – you will need this licence if you are making “minor” changes to a building, such as painting, changing tiles, removing or adding internal partition walls. Again, this should be obtained from your town hall planning department. This licence is also required for any interior work that does not affect the building’s structure, plumbing, electric works, repair to structure of SL MADE WITH “GUNITE” the building etc. A licence is required whether you carry out the work personally or use a qualified Spanish builder. The cost of this licence varies between 2% and 6% of the estimated total cost of the project. eg.

It is usually easier to get a Licencia de Obra Menor than Obra Mayor – architects plans are not required and a POOL REPAIRS ~ sketch can be sufficient.

Hot cross buns

Ingredients: 500g/1lb 2oz strong white flour, plus extra for dusting, 75g/2¾oz caster sugar, 2 tsp mixed spice powder, 1 tsp ground cinnamon, 1 lemon, finely grated zest only, 10g/¼oz salt, 10g/¼oz fast-action dried yeast 40g/1½oz butter, 300ml/10fl oz milk, 1 free-range egg, beaten, 200g/7oz sultanas, 50g/1¾oz finely chopped mixed peel, oil, for greasing.

For the topping : 75g/2¾oz plain flour 2 tbsp golden syrup, for glazing.

Method: Put the flour, sugar, spices and lemon zest into a large bowl and mix together. Then add the salt and yeast, placing them on opposite sides of the bowl. Melt the butter in a pan and warm the milk in a separate pan. Add the butter and half the tepid milk to the dry ingredients.

Add the egg and use your hands to bring the mixture together, incorporating the flour from the edges of the bowl as you go. Gradually add the remaining milk, to form a soft pliable dough.

Tip the dough out on to a lightly floured work surface.

Knead by hand incorporating the sultanas and mixed peel into the dough. Lightly knead for 10 minutes until silky and elastic and forming a smooth ball. The kneading can also be done in a food mixer with a dough hook. Oil a bowl and place the dough in a bowl, cover with cling film and leave to rest in a warm place for about 1½ hours or until doubled in size.

Turn the dough out on to a floured surface and divide into 12 balls.

Line 1-2 baking trays with paper and place the balls on the tray, placing them fairly close together and flattening them slightly. Slip each baking tray into a large clean polythene bag, making sure the bag doesn’t touch the buns. Leave for 40-60 minutes until the buns have doubled in size. Preheat the oven to 220C/200C Fan/Gas 7.

For the topping, add the flour to a bowl with 100ml/3½fl oz water. Mix together to make a paste and spoon into the icing bag. When the buns have risen remove the polythene bags and pipe a cross on each bun.

Bake for 15-20 minutes until pale golden-brown, turning the baking trays round halfway through. Melt the golden syrup in a pan and while the buns are still warm, brush the buns with a little syrup to give a nice shine, before setting aside to cool on a wire rack.

GREAT FUN NIGHT OUT

So much for the view that organic food is just a navel-gazing lifestyle preoccupation for the neurotic rich. The latest market figures show that sales for organic produce are booming – at their strongest in a decade – with a 15% hike last year at Tesco alone.

In growth terms, organic is now outperforming the non-organic grocery market, contradicting cynics who said that at the first whiff of austerity we would ditch high-minded concerns about animal welfare, pesticides and the planet, and join the cheap food scrum.

In anticipation, UK supermarkets cut back on shelf space allotted to organic food to compete with German discount chains.

But organic continued to thrive from independent retailers, home-delivery schemes, farm shops and in restaurants.

Thoughtful

chefs increasingly give organic a big thumbs-up; sales to caterers also shot up by 15% last year. And guess what? Aldi and Lidl shoppers also prefer not to eat pesticide residues or meat from GM-fed livestock that have never seen a green field.

Organic loyalists have developed a shopping strategy that makes organic food accessible, even if you’re on a tight budget: organic fruit, vegetables and herbs bought from growers, or at farmer’s markets, are regularly cheaper than the conventional equivalent from supermarkets.

In the dry goods department (staples such as flour, oats, rice and peanut butter), the price differential between buying organic and non-organic is often slim. Once again, organic can actually be cheaper, particularly if minimally packaged in a wholefood shop. Happily,

organic chocolate costs the same as good-quality nonorganic.

Organic poultry and pork are always significantly more expensive than nonorganic – but free-ranging, organic pigs and poultry are reared in a measurably more humane way and usually taste discernibly better. Knowing this, you might decide to eat poultry and pork less, but stick with organic.

Organic milk and yogurt are more expensive than supermarket equivalent economy lines, but not necessarily than their midrange or premium ones, and the cows are happier: no “zero grazing” allowed.

Perhaps the trick is to be pro-organic without making a religion out of it. Buy organic in the categories that matter most to you, but regularly test any presumption that it is costing you more.

Cumin and mustard seed lentil pie

leaves, fresh if you can get them, 2 carrots, peeled and finely chopped. 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped. 1 tbsp cumin seeds, bashed, 1 tbsp of coriander seeds, 2 garlic cloves, peeled and finely

sliced, 1 thumb-sized piece of ginger, peeled and finely chopped, 1 x 400g tin of puy lentils, drained, or 250g home-cooked lentils, 1 x 400g tin of tomatoes 1 tsp vegetable stock powder, or ½ a stock cube

,

Serves 4 red onions 2, radishes 10 jalapeños 2, sea bass 4 fillets (about 550g total weight), limes 3, blood oranges 2, sherry vinegar 2 tbsp. Peel the onions, then slice them into rounds no thicker than 1cm and put them in large glass bowl.

Thinly slice the radishes and the jalapeños, then add them to the onions.

Slice the sea bass finely

into strips about 1cm in thickness, then put them in with the radishes and onions. Squeeze the limes and blood oranges – you need about 250ml – then season with the sherry vinegar, and a little salt and black pepper. Pour the juice over the fish and vegetables, cover and set aside, in the fridge, for about two hours. Serve on chilled plates.

Gambas Pil Pil Ingredients: 50ml olive oil, 3 garlic cloves, thinly sliced, 1 red chilli, finely sliced, ¼ tsp dried chilli flakes, 1 ½ tsp smoked paprika, 100ml dry sherry, 50g salted butter, 240g raw king prawns, 1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley Juice of ½ a lemon Crusty bread to serve.

1. Heat a frying pan, and add the olive oil.

Add the garlic, chilli, chilli flakes and smoked paprika and cook for less than a minute till the garlic starts to brown.

2. Add the sherry and bring to a boil reduce the heat and cook until reduced by half. Add the butter and melt.

3. Add the prawns and cook for 2 to 3 minutes until just cooked and pink. Add the lemon juice and parsley and season.

4. Serve with crusty bread to mop up all the delicious juices!

How to eat: porridge

Eat porridge on cold mornings, when it is still slightly dark outside. It eases you sleepily into the day, with nary a jolt. Only a damned fool or someone deliberately cultivating a rep as an eccentric “character” would eat porridge in summer. Or after 9am. This dish, so appealing in its core blandness in the fuzzy irritation of an early morning, reveals itself, at lunch, to be

a great lump of unedifying greige stodge. Porridge at lunch is a laborious chore.

Bowl: It must be a highsided bowl with no lip. That uninterrupted circle is a psychological and aesthetic manifestation of the hug that this porridge will give you.

Moreover, served in a large shallow bowl, porridge looks like an unedifying splat. Like hastily slopped-out gruel.

More prison canteen than

with about 2cm of water in the bottom. Put on a high heat and steam until the cauliflower is tender – about 10 minutes. Drain well, then put back on the heat for a minute to dry the cauliflower out. Allow it to cool a little, then blitz in a food processor with the coconut oil and a big pinch of salt. When you have a silky smooth mash, fold in the reserved mustard seeds and curry leaves.

6 When the lentils are ready, squeeze in the juice of the lemon and mix well. Spoon them into an ovenproof dish. Top with the cauliflower mash and bake for 20 minutes, or until the tips of the mash are golden.

Serve immediately whilst nice and hot!

or until soft, sweet and nicely browned. Add the cumin, coriander, garlic and ginger, then cook for 3-4 minutes to toast the spices and allow the garlic and ginger to release their oils.

Take care that the garlic doesn’t burn.

4 Add the drained lentils, tomatoes, stock and half a tin of hot water from the kettle. Roughly chop the dates and add to the pan with the chopped chilli and the zest of half the lemon.

Season with salt and simmer on a medium heat for 25 minutes, or until thick, rich and flavourful.

5 Meanwhile, make the cauliflower mash. Break the cauliflower into florets and slice the stalk (you can use this, too) and add the whole lot to a lidded pan

perfect breakfast. HTE can see the appeal of using a wooden bowl. It is more than a hipster affectation. At 7am there would be something appealingly quiet and restful about the scraping of woodon-wood. But, ultimately, life is as busy as it is short, money is tight and there are only so many things you can engage with. Bowls come very much down life’s pecking order. From a bowl,

HTE wants something cheap and convenient that it can chuck in the dishwasher. Use a wide round soup spoon not an oval dessert spoon. The latter always feels a little stiff in the mouth with porridge.

Good toppings: dark rivulets of demerara maple syrup (adds a smooth, almost burned toffeeish depth that makes it, arguably, the perfect foil for all that oaty roughage.

Brilliant porridge recipes will give you great ideas to jazz up this breakfast favourite. Fruity, syrupy or nutty.

Love Local

We use cauliflower for my mashed topping here as it works brilliantly with the Indian spices. You could just as easily use potato.

Serves 4 Olive oil, 2 tbsp mustard seeds. A handful curry

2 dates. 1 red chilli, deseeded and chopped, 1 lemon. Flaky salt, 2 medium cauliflowers (about 1kg, once leaves removed), 1 tbsp coconut or olive oil.

1 Get all your ingredients together. Fill and boil your kettle. Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/gas mark 6.

2 In a large, heavy pan, add a good glug of oil.

Get it nice and hot, add the mustard seeds and curry leaves, then cook for a couple of minutes until the mustard seeds pop.

Take the pan off the heat, reserve half the seeds and leaves, then put the pan with the remaining mixture back on the heat.

3 Add the carrots and onions to the pan and cook for another 10-15 minutes,

Rain-or-shine leg of lamb is the perfect dish this week

PREP: 10 MINS COOK: 40 MINS SERVES 6 Butterflying your lamb not only means it cooks quicker, but it can be barbecued as well as roasted. Ingredients 1 leg of lamb, about 2kg/4lb 8oz, butterflied.

2 tbsp rapeseed oil 2 tsp caraway seed, crushed 1 tbsp chopped thyme leaf 1 large bunch parsley, chopped.

Method Take the lamb out of the fridge an hour or so before cooking to allow it to come up to room temperature.

Heat oven to 220C/200C fan/ gas 7 or light the barbecue.

Mix together the oil, caraway seeds, thyme and parsley with lots of salt and pepper.

Smear this all over the lamb, rubbing it well into the meat.

You can do this up to a day

before.

If you are cooking the meat on the barbecue, wait until the fire has died down and the coals are white and glowing. Lay the meat, skinside down, onto the bars and cook for 15 mins. Flip over and cook for a further 15 mins for slightly pink lamb, or 5 mins longer if you want the meat well done. Remove and leave to rest on a tray,

covered with foil, for at least 15 mins.

To cook the lamb in the oven, place it on a large shallow baking tray, cook for 15 mins, then turn down the oven to 180C/160C fan/ gas 4 and cook for a further 15 mins. Leave to rest for 15 mins. Once the meat has rested, slice it up and pour over any juices from the resting tray.

Simple Cheese & Onion Pie

250g self-raising flour, 60g cold butter, diced, 60g cold lard, diced, Salt. 2–3 tbsp iced water, 3 medium onions, 25g butter, 250300g cheese, ideally Lancashire, but cheddar or young pecorino romano works too. Black or white pepper Milk, for sealing and glazing.

1 You will need a tart tin. Make the pastry by rubbing the fat into the flour with your fingertips, until the mix resembles breadcrumbs.

Add a pinch of salt and

enough iced water, gradually and cautiously – to make a ball of dough, neither too sticky, nor too firm. Wrap the dough in Clingfilm and chill for at least 30 minutes.

2 Peel, half and slice the onion into halfmoons. In a frying pan, melt the butter over a low flame, then add the onions and a pinch of salt and cook, stirring for a few minutes. Add a small glass of water and then cook, stirring occasionally, for about 15 mins until the water has been driven away

and the onion is very soft. Remove from the heat and allow to cool.

Grate the cheese. 3 Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/gas mark 4.

Roll out the pastry and use it to line the base and sides of the tin, so it overhangs slightly. Do not trim yet, but prick the base with a fork.

Make a layer with half the onion, grind over a little black pepper, then make a layer using half the cheese. Repeat.

Paint the edges of the dough with milk. Roll the remaining dough into a

Trim the excess dough away. Make three short slashes in the middle of the pie to let steam escape. If you like, use the non-blade side of a knife to make a faint lattice. 4 Sit the pie on a preheated baking sheet and bake for 40-50 mins, or until golden and the cheese is bubbling gently through the slashes. Allow the pie to sit for 30 minutes before turning it out.

Brilliant to make with little children over the holidays, these easy chocolate crispy cakes are a perennial favourite.

Ingredients 225g/8oz plain chocolate, broken into pieces 2 tbsp golden syrup 50g/2oz butter 75g/3oz cornflakes 36 mini chocolate eggs.

Method Line a 12-hole fairy

cake tin with paper cases.

Melt the chocolate, golden syrup and butter in a bowl set over a pan of gently simmering water. Stir the mixture until smooth.

Remove the bowl from the heat and gently stir in the cornflakes until all of the cereal is coated in the chocolate.

Divide the mixture between the paper cases and press 3 chocolate eggs into the centre of each nest. Chill in the fridge for 1 hour, or until completely set.

A deeply impressive SUV with a competent driving experience But beyond the question of how well it succeeds what was a clever and likeable predecessor, the new 3008 is being set up by its maker to lead the redefinition of the brand’s design identity and accelerate the process of Peugeot’s gradual upmarket relocation, which began with the 308 in 2013.

It’s intended to be elegant and desirable as well as versatile, and while it’s larger than the car that went before it, it’s also lighter.

While the outgoing dieselelectric Hybrid4 model isn’t going to be directly replaced (a petrol-electric plug-in hybrid is planned for 2019), the new 3008 is being

launched with a modern mix of three and four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines and with a choice of manual and torque converter automatic gearboxes.

Off-road appeal will be limited by the absence of a four-wheel-drive model, at least for now, but is redressed by an increase in ground clearance, dualpurpose tyres for those who want them and new traction control system. On the face of it, the new 3008 has an air of style and technological sophistication about it.

Could it be the fully realised evidence of PSA Group boss Carlos Tavares’ new, more ambitious Peugeot?

The new Peugeot 3008 is a different kind of car from the one that took its maker into the crossover niche eight years ago.

Having been designed before the stylistic norms of the growing market segment had set hard and fast, the original 3008 was very much a hatchback with a sprinkling of SUV about it. Some thought it weird, others a bit ugly – but we always quite liked it.

Videos can only be shared while stationary but an autoshare function on the app means pictures can automatically be shared on the chosen social media.

The app also allows you to manage the video length between 20 and 60 seconds.

ConnectedCAM Citroen is currently exclusive to the C3 – standard on range-topping Flair and a £380 option, packaged with automatic lights and wipers and selfdimming rear-view mirror, on mid-spec Feel – but expect it to be rolled out across other models and brands in the future.

Official campsites Camp sites and motor home parks in Spain are generally of a very high standard and have all the facilities you need. Most speak English and most can be booked online or by phone before arrival.

Spain’s MotoGP rider Jorge Lorenzo Guerrero was born on 4 May 1987 in Palma, Majorca and is currently registered to ride for the Ducati team, having switched from Yamaha late last year.

The 2006 and 2007 World 250cc champion, his nine pole positions led to nine individual race victories in the latter year. He then went on to win three MotoGP World championships in the space of five years - in 2010, 2012 and 2015.

Apart from that treble in the 500cc class, Jorge has also finished runner-up on three occasions and in 2012, became the first Spaniard to win multiple Premier

class titles. With 64 career wins under his belt, he currently lies fifth in the alltime list, trailing leader Mike Hailwood by just 12 victories.

Jorge came second in the riders’ championship in 2013 behind fellow countryman and future star Marc Márquez, admitting that “I had a poor first half to the 2014 season and as a result I simply couldn’t make up ground on the championship leaders and had to settle for third place behind Marc and the doctor himself, Valentino”.

Ranieri SACKED!!!

Claudio Ranieri was sacked as Leicester City manager on Thursday night, nine months after guiding the club to the first top-flight trophy in their 133-year history.

Ranieri returned to East Midlands Airport from Seville in the afternoon to be given the news by Leicester’s director of football Jon Rudkin in a ruthless move which has stunned football as much as their remarkable title win.

The 65-year-old has struggled throughout a feeble title defence, bewildering players with tactics and team selection and allegedly marginalising backroom staff, but Leicester’s Thai owners are still facing severe criticism after opting to dismiss the Italian.

Earlier this month they had released a statement declaring unwavering support for Ranieri, but the 2-0 defeat against Swansea is thought to have seriously alarmed the club hierarchy and forced a swift rethink.

But the departure of Ranieri is certain to polarise opinion, even though his

second season has been excruciating.

Gary Lineker, the former Leicester striker, tweeted shortly after the decision: “After all that Claudio Ranieri has done for Leicester City, to sack him now is inexplicable, unforgivable and gut-wrenchingly sad.”

Ranieri was rewarded with a new contract for his part in the title win, doubling his pay to around £3million a year.

He is thought to have been given the news after arriving back in England on Thursday afternoon.

A club statement read: “Claudio, appointed City manager in July 2015, led the Foxes to the greatest triumph in the Club’s 133-year history last season, as we were crowned champions of England for the first time.

“His status as the most successful Leicester City manager of all time is without question.

Now Leicester must mount a revival after only five league wins all season.

For Ranieri, it is a case of Dilly Ding, Dilly Gone.

Rooney Stays!

Wayne Rooney will leave Manchester United at the end of the season despite insisting he is staying at Old Trafford, reports suggest. The striker ended a week of uncertainty, that saw his agent Paul Stretford fly to Beijing to discuss a move

to the Chinese Super League, by releasing a statement confirming he is staying put.

‘Despite the interest which has been shown from other clubs, for which I’m grateful, I want to end recent speculation and say that I am staying at Manchester United,’ said Rooney. ‘I hope I will play a full part in helping the team in the fight for success on four fronts. ‘It’s an exciting time at the club and I want to remain a part of it.’ But with the 31-yearold unhappy at being a fringe player, and United keen on a move, it is highly unlikely that Rooney will be at the club next season.

Jorge clinched the title on another Spanish track when he won in Valencia to make if five world titles overall - two in the 250cc class and three in the 500cc category.

Last year, Jorge, although he won in Qatar, France, Italy and in his home country Spain (Valencia) and finished runner-up in three other races - in America and twice in Spain at Jerez and Aragon - and finished third in Austria, San Marino and Malaysia – never really looked happy sitting on his Yamaha machine.

However, it must be said that at one point, he was well in contention for another world championship success.

Unfortunately things didn’t go according to plan in his last six races!

In the end he had to settle for third place in the rider’s championship on 208 points. Fellow Spaniard Marc Marquez took the title on 278 points with Valentino Rossi second on 236.

Jorge is now confident of having a good season with his new employers, Ducati, in 2017… and although Marquez is once again rated higher in the rankings by the sport’s officials and, indeed, by various pundits, he still believes that given the breaks, he can go close to winning another world title.

Jorge admitted: “I feel fine right now and I’m looking forward to the new season.

Upon arrival for our very convenient tee time of 10am we were greeted by a slightly warmer day for the last round of our Annual Medal Stableford. But around 1pm it begins to blow and that happened just as we began the back nine which you may know is the highest part of the course and also the tightest.

The scores confirmed this, most players had good front nines but there were many ugly 10’s 12’s and even a 13 on some of the more difficult holes on the back nine. It was to some surprise to a handful of members when handing in their cards only to be told that they had been disqualified for not

completing every hole. Oh! Wasn’t it a Stableford? Added to that some members fail to look at the N.T.P. marker on the green where it states the category for that par3 although they do manage write their names on it even when it is NOT for them!

F1 Season Preview

Formula 1 motor racing will have a very different look to it when it emerges from its winter hibernation in Australia towards the end of March.

Firstly, 86 year-old Suffolk-born Bernie Ecclestone will not be in charge! It announced that after 40 years in office, Ecclestone was to be officially replaced by the 62 year-old American businessman, Chase Carey, vicePresident of 21st Century Fox. Now bedded in as the Chief Executive Officer and Executive Chairman of the F1 Group, Carey quickly appointed the vastly experienced Ecclestone

as Chairman Emeritus of the sport.

For the first time since 1994, the reigning world champion Nico Rosberg, will not be defending his crown. He is, in fact, the seventh driver not to compete after winning the crown… the other six being Juan Manuel Fangio in 1952 (injured); Mike Hawthorn in 1959 (retired); Jochen Rindt in 1971 (deceased); Jackie Stewart in 1974 (retired); Nigel Mansell in 1993 (switched to Indycar) and Alain Prost, thirteen years ago, in 1994 (retired). It will be a fascinating new F1 season ahead.
