Brussels sent the European Union’s 27 remaining member states a nine-page document containing the guidelines to the Brexit negotiation that is opening up. These guidelines represent backing for Spain in its conflict over Gibraltar.

A clause in the document states that once the UK leaves the bloc, “no agreement between the EU and the United Kingdom may apply to the territory of Gibraltar without agreement between the Kingdom of Spain and the United Kingdom.”

The principle that the British overseas territory will be left out of any understanding between Europe and Britain is handing the Spanish government the negotiating key it needed in its claims over the territory. If London wants to facilitate any kind of relationship between Gibraltar and the EU27 members, it will have to agree to a bilateral negotiation with Madrid.

It is unclear whether the British executive will accept, since London has always been wary of two-way talks. Ever since the Brexit victory, the Spanish executive has invested a great deal of diplomatic effort into this project. And with Britain

on its way out, the heads of state and government of the remaining 27 states are now openly defending Spain’s interests.

“In the EU of the 27, only the argument of one of the sides is now represented,” said one high-ranking European official.

Meanwhile, leaders of three of Spain’s main parties have met with high-ranking foreign ministry officials to hammer out a joint strategy aimed at starting a new kind of post-Brexit negotiation with Britain over the disputed territory of Gibraltar. Representatives of the ruling Popular Party (PP), the main opposition Socialist Party (PSOE) and the small reform party Ciudadanos showed optimism about “a first good sign,” alluding to the fact that British Prime Minister Theresa May’s letter formally announcing the beginning of the UK’s separation from Europe did not include any mention of the overseas territory. Gone are the days when former Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel García Margallo boasted that “the Spanish flag will fly in Gibraltar much sooner than Chief Minister Fabian Picardo

thinks.” Nor is there any more talk of co-sovereignty – one of the options defended by Spain in the past.

Instead, Spanish politicians are now trying to make the most of what they see as a historic opportunity afforded by Brexit. As a British overseas territory, The Rock will leave the EU when Britain does, even though 95% of Gibraltarians voted to remain at the referendum last year. Ever since, there has been a flurry of diplomatic and political activity with regard to a small territory of under seven square kilometers that shares its northern border with the Andalusian province of Cádiz. Gibraltar has been a source of dispute ever since it was ceded to Great Britain in 1713 under the Treaty of Utrecht. “Now, with Brexit, there is an opportunity to negotiate with Britain from a very good starting point, in a very reasonable and bilateral manner, over one of the most delicate subjects for Spain, Gibraltar, while keeping this issue separate from other special borders such as Northern Ireland,” said Ramón Jáuregui, the PSOE representative in the European Parliament.

Blue passports may make a return

Robert Goodwill, the Home Office Minister, suggested last year that the department was “considering potential changes”.

Conservative MP Andrew Rosindell, chairman of the Flags and Heraldry Committee, told the paper: “It’s a matter of identity.

Polar bears spotted in Scotland

Anybody venturing to Scotland normally has only the midges to avoid. Now there’s an altogether more terrifying, not so wee beastie lurking in the woods. For scientists with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) have discovered a polar bear living on an island in the Outer Hebrides.

The images and video footage were captured by a dog walker on North Uist. Its authenticity has been verified by the WWF. Scientists believe the bear may have been forced to head south after finding itself stranded on a melting sheet of ice that broke away from the Arctic

ice cap. Data tracking suggests more polar bears are likely to follow the same route in coming months and years as the ice cap continues to diminish.

Satellite tracking technology showed that the polar bear started its journey in Svalbard in the Norwegian Arctic in January. But record declines in sea ice and unseasonably high temperatures forced it south in an attempt to adapt to the effects of climate change. The polar bear, who has been given the name Lirpa Loof, which is Norwegian for ‘white and fluffy’, was then sighted on the North Uist beach.

Benidorm in bid for Unesco heritage site status Benidorm may not conjure thoughts of cultural significance in the same way as the canals of Venice, the Tower of London or the Alhambra, but the Spanish city on the Costa Blanca is attempting to convince the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) of its significance in world culture and history.

A haven for British ex-pats and holidaymakers for the last 60-plus years is soon bid to be added to Unesco’s list of World Heritage sites.

However, the resort joining the likes of Acropolis in Athens, Brazil’s Iguaçu and China’s Silk Road will raise some eyebrows given the city’s association with “Brits abroad” arguably more so than a “masterpiece of human creative genius” or an “important interchange of human values”.

Police Arrest 102 in Internet Child Porn

Spanish police say they have arrested 102 people for possession and distribution of child pornography material on the internet.

A Civil Guard statement Friday said they had traced some 450,000 computer images and videos showing sexual abuse of babies and children aged up to 14.

The statement said 90 houses had been raided and more than 400 hard discs and other computer material seized.

Police said 10 of the child victims had been identified so far.

Details on the nationality of the detainees or when the arrests took place were not immediately available.

Spanish Citizenship Applications Have Surged

Ever since June 23, the day on which Britain held its Brexit referendum, there has been a surge in applications

by British residents in Spain wishing to obtain Spanish

citizenship. So suggest the figures at Instituto Cervantes, the Spanish cultural institution that administers the two citizenship tests required – among other things – to obtain a Spanish passport. Applications for the first examination have grown significantly among British citizens living in Spain.

Between January and June 2016, only 70 Britons took the test. But between the referendum and February of this year, that figure had risen to 423.

A similar picture emerges for the language examination:

50 applicants in the months before the referendum, and 281 between then and February. Most of the applicants in both cases are between 46 and 64 years old, and live in Madrid, Barcelona, Alicante or Málaga. Michael Harris is a writer who lives in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, just north of the Spanish capital. He has been living in Spain since 1982 and now, at age 61, he has just passed both tests. “I had never thought about it until I saw the results of the Brexit vote,” he explains. “As English citizens, we were just

AER Lingus has defended another increase in the cost of checking in a bag when travelling to and from several European destinations.

It will now cost an extra €10 per bag on flights to and from Spain, Italy and Greece.

Increase in Opposition

The number of Catalans who oppose separating from Spain has grown over the last three months to 48.5%, compared with 44.3% who support secession. The figures were released on Thursday by the Catalan regional government’s Center for Opinion Studies, whose most recent poll shows the widest gap between both options since June 2015, shortly before the north eastern region held its last election. Asked “Do you want Catalonia to become an independent state?”, 48.5% of respondents said no, while 44.3% said yes.

Three months earlier, at the December poll, 46.8% of respondents opposed an independent Catalan state, while 45.3% had supported it.

That gap of 1.5 percentage points has now grown to 4.2 points.

Another question offered respondents different options as to the best future for Catalonia: as a region of Spain, as a comunidad autónoma or autonomous community (its current status), as a state within a federal Spain, or as a fully independent state.

The poll shows that 28.5% of respondents chose to preserve the status quo, nearly five points more than at the last poll (23.6%).

However, the most popular option remained a fully independent state (37.3%). The “state within a federal Spain” possibility received 21.7% support, a significant drop from the 29.2% of the last survey.

Alqueria de Golf

Alqueria is a paradise for golfers. Well that’s the advertising blurb, in fact no one in Alqueria can even play the game. But complete ignorance has never stopped anyone from doing anything. The world’s politicians are testimony to the fact that the bigger the country the bigger the level of ignorance at the top.

The topography of Alqueria’s golf course was interesting to say the least. Built on waste ground to the east of the Río Verde, where so many failed Alquerian projects had been situated, it was mainly swamp strewn with semi-submerged and ruined buildings. The turf floated on a soup of disgusting black ‘Río Verde’ slime. Golfers balanced on small rafts of artificial grass as they tried to hit golf balls that slowly sank into the foul smelling ooze. Respirators had to be worn to avoid the fumes rendering one unconscious.

The greens were more solid but had to be arrived at by negotiating the convoluted Río Verde which meanders its disgusting way around, through and under the golf course. Many a daring golfer met his end trying to cross the River which can only be traversed at certain times of the day due to the feeding habits of some of its larger inhabitants. All holes on the greens are attached via a network of plastic tubing which allows the balls to be collected at the club house and sold back to the golfers. One

individual has bought the same ball two hundred and forty six times.

Antonio Poyato, alive to the needs of the modern golfer decided to invent a device which would render the bag full of clubs that golfers lugs about redundant. He developed the ‘Swiss Army’ golf club.

Instead of the twelve or fourteen clubs required for various obscure purposes, Poyato only required one. It weighed nine and a half kilograms however and was festooned with levers, buttons and knobs which controlled the deployment of a multitude of heads. Unfortunately it malfunctioned pole-axing half a dozen golfers, destroying Alqueria’s newly built public urinal and causing the Spanish Navy to deploy an aircraft carrier off the nearby coast.

But why did the golfers come to Alqueria in the first place?

They came after being lured by video footage of legitimate courses on the Costa del Sol with badly edited superimposed images of Alqueria. The promises made by Manuela also had something to do with the male contingent arriving, while the wives wisely tagged along to keep an eye on their potentially wayward husbands. Once in Alqueria their passports, ready cash and dignity were confiscated and only returned when their bank accounts were emptied. They were then deposited over the Alquerian border in Spain where the Spanish authorities were left to repatriate these unfortunates.

The golf course has now been closed under threat of Spanish military action.

A Win-win Situation

The jigsaw puzzle, bought with such gung-ho, seemed to have grown in transit from the shop, and I began to doubt my own boast about the size of our kitchen table and its ability to accommodate a 3,000 piece puzzle. The tape measure was fetched, and Doubt chuckled – The kitchen table was about 4 inches too narrow!

There was nothing for it, we would have to swap it for a more modestly sized puzzle.

We then moved on to registering our robotic red penguin, aka the coffee maker, as favoured by George Clooney. ‘Do it online, it’s easy’ the Chica had assured us.

When it comes to the computer Pete has the patience of Job, but marginally more computer savvy. With sporadic assistance from me he persevered for 2½ hours to no avail - he had run through the procedure 7 times, but the machine was still resolutely unregistered!

We decided to take it and the puzzle back, and let those who thought it was easy wrestle with the problem.

I left Pete and Chica #2 crowded round the shop computer while I browsed for another puzzle with which to swap my over-ambitious choice for something more compatible with our kitchen table.

However, smaller puzzles are also cheaper; I was not expecting money back, as the initial mistake had been mine, so I chose 2 to make up the purchase price, deposited them on the counter and settled to watch as Chica #2 and Pete consistently failed to complete registration of the pesky

I was sneakily quite pleased as I watched them tussling with the electronic embodiment of Nescafé – quite easy it was not! It would have been simpler to sculpt the Eiffel Tower out of jelly!

However, eventually they wore it down.

With bad grace Nescafé admitted defeat, and acknowledged the red penguin as one of its own.

Pete gathered up the precious paperwork that confirmed our ownership of the penguin and I scooped up my 2 puzzles.

‘Wait!’ Chica #1 called. ‘You’ve forgotten your change.’ She added, proffering 3 euro coins. ‘Those puzzles are cheaper.’

I had expected a swap, not money back!

So all-in-all, it was a win-win situation for us – I got 2 puzzles and some money back in exchange for 1, and Pete got the penguin registered.

However, I am a little disappointed – I am still waiting for George Clooney to put in an appearance in our kitchen!

Intact Tomb Find

Medieval Market

The tomb belonged to the brother of governor Sarenput II, also called Nubkaurenakht was an ancient Egyptian monarch during the reign of pharaohs Senusret II and Senusret III of the 12th Dynasty.

The leading archaeologist Alejandro Jiménez, professor at Jaén University, affirmed they had uncovered ‘an intact well, with chamber complete and in the interior is buried the brother of governor Sarenput II’ one of the most powerful officials during the golden age of the XII dynasty.

The tomb, is some 3,800 years old, located in the necropolis of Qubbet elHawa, is a site of a big dune on the western bank of the Nile, opposite Aswan, in the south of Egypt, where the Spanish team have been excavating since 2008.

The chief of the Egyptology Department of the Antiquities Ministry, Mahmud Afifi, qualified the discovery as ‘important’ in a press release.

As well as the richness of the

tomb, Afifi wanted to throw light on the lives of upper class individuals ‘under the shadows of power’, which until now little was known.

The cadaver, identified as Shemai, was buried in two tombs. The ‘exterior was stained by termites’ while the interior ‘remained in a preserved condition’ as the Spanish team were able to read the letters ‘of his name and his parents’ and his own identity, indicated Jiménez.

In the words of the Spanish Egyptologist ‘this is the first time a burial site of these characteristics has been seen 70 years, for the status of the pharaoh’ The importance of this discovery is, until now, nobody knew about the brothers of the governors - the ‘secondary’ and this is a great opportunity to know ‘what honours or titles they held, and the role they played in society’ underlined Jiménez.

Also, inside the second chamber they found ‘models of boats and the

representation of a mommy’.

The discovery was found on March 6, but was only released yesterday; it has been fully documented with photographic measurement, photography, drawings and video, among other techniques, before the team close the chamber after two months of work in their ninth edition.

However, currently more interest has been generated by the brother of the emir of Elephantine next year, as the chamber was sealed on March 7 and ‘the team are excited about the year ahead’ This year the Spanish mission was composed with a multidisciplined team formed by 30 researchers from Jaén University and others from Spain, Great Britain, Belgium and the Czech Republic, with the financing from the IDI project from the Ministry for Economy and Competitiveness, which has allowed this mission to be the most important developed by Spain regarding Egypt.

If you ever thought of visiting Alcalá del Júcar, one of the pueblos más bonitos de España (the most beautiful villages of Spain), Easter might be an excellent time.

That is when, for the fourth year running, a lively medieval fair will be held, adding an extra attraction to all the rest the town has to offer: waterfalls, a sandy beach, narrow streets and picturesque little houses, a castle, woods, sandstone cliffs, caves and plenty of accomodation, from simple B&B’s to 5 star hotels and lots of good restaurants. At the foot of the village, next to the Roman bridge over the Júcar river, some thirty five stalls will be set up with ceramics, with wooden toys and leather handbags, with painted T-shirts, hand made shoes and sandals, design jewelry in silver, ceramics, wood, silk and recycled materials, puppets and soft toys. A blacksmith will be at work in the fair and you can have a go at making your own sheet of paper.

All participants will be dressed up in medieval style, Amata, the craft association, will be organising this market for the fourth year running. Amata is a craft association dedicated to preserving and enhancing craft work in Spain, which is gradually disappearing as more and more markets are being held with cheap and

tasteless goods on the stalls . Amata inspects workshops, critically examines how goods are made and who makes them, checks that what is on the stall is made by the people on the stall - a guarantee that any visitor to the market will find goods that are original and of good quality. There are plenty of restaurants nearby and the town itself is a delight to visit, with a Roman bridge, three large caves and its own impressive castle, visitors can also enjoy numerous activities such as horse riding, rafting, fishing, climbing and various guided walking tours.

One of Spain’s many “caminos de Santiago” passes through the village, sign-posted local walks. The Market opens on Thursday afternoon at 6 pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday opening times are from 11 to 2 in the morning and from 5 till late in the afternoon and evening and on Monday only in the morning from 11 to 2.

Ban on Tourist Rentals

Beginning this summer, the city of Palma, on the Spanish island of Mallorca, will bar homeowners from renting out their apartments to tourists.

People who do so could face fines of up to €40,000.

The deputy mayor for urban planning, Antoni Noguera, announced this measure as a way to curtail an activity that is raising the price of housing, making it unaffordable for many local residents.

Palma – shortly to enjoy a name change – joins other Spanish cities that have moved against unlicensed tourist apartments, most notably Barcelona, which last year fined accommodation sites Airbnb and Homeaway €600,000.

Announcing a move designed to improve access to affordable housing, Noguera said average rents have risen 7.5% in the last year, and that people are paying around €11 per square meter.

The move is controversial because in theory, only regional governments can legislate on this matter. But Mayor José Hila has decided not to wait around for a law that’s been promised by the government of the Balearic Islands.

Shots Fired

Two British men were rushed to hospital this week after being shot outside a tourist bar in Spain.

One of the two men was shot in the leg and the other in the foot during a drunken fight that started at a pub in the popular resort of Fuengirola.

Both men were rushed to hospital after police discovered one at the scene and the other at a nearby hotel.

The suspected gunman, a 42-year-old Brit who has not been named, also received medical attention after being found on the ground with head injuries.

Sources close to the ongoing police probe said two guns were seized – one in a Volkswagen and another under a nearby vehicle, where bullet casings were also found.

Neither of the victims’ wounds are thought to be life-threatening.

So far, the film has been best known for the whitewashing controversy that erupted over Johansson’s casting, but the trailers so far have shown off some very slick visuals, great action, and hints at the big mind-bending plot.

The controversy over Johansson’s casting ignited after a petition was signed to have an Asian star replace her, and the Mulan star Ming-Na Wen criticized the decision, tweeting that she had “nothing against Scarlett Johansson. In fact, I’m a big fan.

But everything against this whitewashing of Asian role.”

The argument continued when the screenwriter Max Landis suggested there were no actors of east Asian origins capable of getting Ghost in the Shell green-lit in 2016.

How to Treat Blisters Correctly

See your GP if you have blisters that: you think are infected – an infected blister will be filled with yellow or green pus and may be painful, red and hot, are very painful, keep coming back.

Antibiotics may be prescribed to treat an infected blister.

If you have a large or painful blister, your GP may decide to decompress the blister under sterile conditions.

If a blister has burst, don’t peel off the dead skin on top of the blister. Allow the fluid inside to drain and wash it with mild soap and water.

Cover the blister and the area around it with a dry, sterile dressing to protect it from infection until it heals.

Hydrocolloid dressings, available over the counter from pharmacies, have been shown to help prevent discomfort and encourage healing.

If the top layer of dead skin from a burst blister has already rubbed off, don’t pick at the edges of the remaining skin. Follow the advice above to protect it from infection.

If the blister is on your foot, avoid wearing the shoes that caused it, at least until it heals.

Measles Outbreak in Europe

Measles is spreading across Europe wherever immunisation coverage has dropped, the World Health Organization is warning.

The largest outbreaks are being seen in Italy and Romania.

In the first month of this year, Italy reported more than 200 cases. Romania has reported more than 3,400 cases and 17 deaths since January 2016.

Measles is highly contagious.

Travel patterns mean no

person or country is beyond its reach, says the WHO. For good protection, it’s recommended that at least 95% of the population is vaccinated against the disease.

But many countries are struggling to achieve that.

Most of the measles cases have been found in countries where immunisation has dipped below this threshold and the infection is endemic - France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Romania,

Switzerland and Ukraine.

Preliminary information for February suggests that the number of new infections is rising sharply, says the WHO. WHO regional director for Europe Dr Zsuzsanna Jakab said: “I urge all endemic countries to take urgent measures to stop transmission of measles within their borders, and all countries that have already achieved this to keep up their guard and sustain high immunisation coverage.”

Safe ways to manage chronic agony

Cardiologist and study author Professor Gunnar Gislason of the Danish Heart Foundation says his study underlines existing concerns.

“We found there was an increase in sudden cardiac deaths among people on prescribed NSAIDs [nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs]; an increased risk of 31% associated with ibuprofen use, and 50% with diclofenac.” If you are fit and healthy, the increased risk is unlikely to put you in any danger. But if you are already at high risk, taking NSAIDs is a serious decision that you should discuss with

a healthcare professional.

Gislason sees it as a major public health issue that needs tackling. But Dr Alan Fayaz, specialist in pain medicine at University College London, says chronic pain itself can put a strain on the heart, irrespective of NSAID use.

Furthermore, people who are prescribed long-term, high-dose NSAIDs are more likely to have other health problems than those that are not, so it can be hard to be certain to what degree the NSAIDs are causing the extra cases of heart attack and stroke. But Fayaz does agree that NSAIDs certainly

Is pain ever good?

Can I avoid chronic pain to start with?

If only. But there are some precautions worth taking.

to generalised pain. Back pain and repetitive strain injuries that start in the workplace may be preventable with better work practices.

The over-70s can have a shingles jab to reduce the risk of chronic nerve pain that can persist after an attack.

She prepped the actress’ hair with Tresemme Firm Hold Mousse before rough drying. She then created small bends in the hair with a flat iron, sprayed Ouai Texturizing Spray at the roots and pulled hair back. Justine wrapped metal wire around select pieces and twisted the lengths into a double bun, securing with pins to finish.

Later that day for Phillip Plein’s fall collection, the stylist created an impressive Rapunzel-esque rope braided ponytail that stretched from Shay’s head to her hips.

“She isn’t afraid of going outside, she’s afraid of situations where she can’t escape or get help.”

It seems that some things are impossible to escape: tragic incidents in the past, something we can all relate to. Bury the skeletons and what happens? Eventually, things will surface and we have to attempt to deal with the impossible. Taylor has created a credible character in the form of Jo. Blackmore, still grieving over the loss of her baby son and suffering from agoraphobia. Her husband, Max, an investigative journalist (or a crime reporter) is portrayed less sympathetically, seems to be far too protective of Jo and obsessive with his young daughter Elise.

He has been instrumental in the conviction of Ian White who had set up a national chain of money-lending shops that charged extortionate interest rates for vulnerable people such as single mums, pensioners and people on benefits. When they were unable to repay the loans they were threatened with violence: “coercion, drug-taking and violence were rife.” Max went under-cover and collected evidence

The opening is dramatic with an unsavoury woman called Paula threatening poor, anxious Jo: “I’ve lost something. And I think your husband might know where it is.” Her final ominous warning disturbs Jo: “You should keep an eye on your daughter’s things… and your daughter.” Jo becomes paranoid that this wicked person is going to kidnap her daughter and she blames Max for putting the family in danger.

It doesn’t take long before the state of their marriage is laid bare: loveless and sexless. Jo indicates to her friend Helen that she wants a divorce. Max discovers this and tries desperately to keep his family together. He has had such an unhappy childhood and wants to prove he can be a wonderful father to Elise. His feelings for his wife are less convincing though.

A number of unfortunate incidents befall Jo indicating that she may be incapable of caring for her daughter. Jo is convinced that Paula is behind all of this, too naïve to recognise the truth until it stares her in the face. But is it too late? The prospect of an arrest and losing a second child proves too much for her so she leaves Bristol in disguise, heading to Ireland, like a fugitive on the run from the police, social services and her husband, clinging to her daughter like a limpet until the bitter end.

More disasters though before a tense finale. What happened to Mary, her landlady and who killed her child, the one that looked like Jo’s daughter? Can Jo ever escape her past and provide a happy and stable environment for her daughter?

It’s an excellent read and gripping as a psychological thriller from start to finish.

The flower of the moment

For a few years dahlias were branded garish, old-fashioned and only grown by fiercely competitive Mr McGregor types, armed with rulers, hoping to win prizes at the local flower show. Now they are firmly back in fashion, used by all the most soughtafter florists from Scarlet & Violet to The Land Gardeners.

To me, their most appealing trait of all is how easy they are to grow. For years, I cast jealous glances at the dahlia bed of my allotment neighbour. The lavish blooms of riotous colour seemed too impressive to be achievable. How wrong I was!

Last year, I finally summoned the courage to have a go myself and for months I was the smug bearer of huge bouquets of flowers.

HOW TO GROW THEM In March or early April, start your dahlias off in pots, be they rooted cuttings or tubers. If you are using tubers that have been in storage over winter, give them a thorough inspection and cut off any diseased or soggy pieces with a clean knife. If you are planting a tuber, look for last year’s stems and plant with these to the top. If you are using rooted cuttings, gradually pot on, increasing the size of pot as your plant grows.

Keep the pots well-watered and when your dahlias reach about 40cm tall, pinch out their growing tips just above a set of leaves. This will encourage them to bush out. The best time to plant them in the garden is towards Spring.

Damp problems can be a serious concern in any home, whether you are a home-owner or renter, or living in any style of property. At best it can be a nuisance and make a room feel cold, unwelcoming and unhealthy, and at worst it can indicate structural or weatherproofing issues.

Ceilings – As well as looking for signs of mould, pay close attention to the colour of the ceiling. Is it discoloured or stained in areas? Brown patches in the external corners and near chimney breasts can indicate damp.

Windows -

Condensation on windows in the morning, along with small puddles of water along window sills, can indicate high moisture levels within your house.

This can be either a cause, or symptom, of damp. Black mould may also develop on wooden and PVC window frames, and silicon sealant used around the edge of frames.

Bathrooms and kitchens – Inspect the

grouting and sealant for signs of black mould.

Check around window frames and on ceilings for similar damage.

Look inside cabinets and cupboards to identify any areas of staining and mould growth, and pay attention to musty smells.

Furniture and soft furnishings – Black

mould can grow on the inside of curtains, blinds and on upholstered surfaces such as sofas.

Check the back of furniture for specks of mould and also for cloudy condensation on wooden and plastic surfaces.

Basements and unheated storage spaces – A musty, damp smell is likely to be first indicator of a problem here. In addition, check for staining and mould on painted walls and woodwork.

Smoothies & ice lollies

These are two of my favourite recipes, but feel free to have fun experimenting with different flavours.

Ingredients FOR A BERRY SMOOTHIE: 1 mug of frozen berries , (200g) 1 mug of unsweetened almond milk , (300ml) 6 tablespoons natural yoghurt 1 super-ripe banana 1 small handful of porridge oats , (35g) 1 tablespoon mixed seeds , (I like flaxseeds and sunflower seeds).

Method I like to use the bags of frozen fruit you can easily get in the supermarket – they’re so convenient, and a bit of a staple in the Oliver household.

Use unsweetened almond milk in my smoothies, but you can use regular milk, or fresh juice (but bear in mind it will be sweeter), if you prefer. You can add all sorts of delicious extras to these smoothies: vanilla is really nice in the berry smoothie, and fresh ginger is fantastic in the mango, passion fruit and mint version.

Add all the ingredients to a blender (removing any herb stalks first), fasten the lid and whiz until nice and smooth – you might need to stop the blender and scrape down the sides to help it along.

Pour into cups, then serve.

At this point you could pour the mixture into ice-lolly moulds and freeze them – they’re always a big hit with my kids.

GREAT FUN NIGHT OUT

Serves 8 (with leftovers), 14 (without). Scotch or black Welsh beef forerib 3.8kg (a 4-rib joint), onions 2, peeled and cut into 1cm rounds garlic oil 2 x 15ml tbsp.

Maldon salt 1½ tsp or ¾ tsp table salt dried thyme 1 tsp cayenne pepper ½ tsp.

For the port and stilton gravy. Fatty juices from the roast beef tin 2 x 15ml tbsp plain flour 1 x 15ml tbsp ruby port 125ml, plus 1 x 15ml tbsp cooked onions from the roast beef tin (optional), organic beef stock 500ml, “fresh” from a shop-bought tub blue cheese 125g redcurrant jelly 1 tsp salt and pepper to taste extra juices from the roast beef tin and carving board.

Take your beef out of the fridge to bring to room temperature, which could take an hour or possibly more, and preheat the oven to 220C/gas mark 7. Put the onion slices into a roasting

tin and sit the rib of beef on top of them. Use the onion slices as props to help the rib sit up on its bones in an “L” shape. Smear the oil over the white fat of the rib, and sprinkle with the salt, thyme and cayenne pepper.

Cook according to the beef’s weight and your taste. I like my beef nice and underdone, so I give it 33 minutes per kg/15 minutes per lb, which means, for a joint this size, a cooking time of about 2 hours unless the beef’s straight out of the fridge, in which case, add another 20 minutes or so. If you want medium beef, give the joint, from room temperature, 44 minutes per kg/20 minutes per lb, and if you like welldone meat, 66 minutes per kg/30 minutes per lb. As for feeding capacity, this size of joint will certainly look after a big tableful, from 8 with lots of leftovers to 14, without the definite promise of them.

When the beef comes out of the oven, remove to a carving board and allow to rest in a warm part of the kitchen under a tent of foil for 30 minutes before carving; or just leave, tented in its tin, for the same time. Do not start clearing up the tin, even if you have taken out the beef, however, as you will need some of the pan juices and onions for the gravy. For the gravy, make a roux by adding the 2 tablespoons of fatty juices from the beef tin to a saucepan, whisk in the flour, and then the 125ml of port, and keep heating and whisking over a fairly gentle heat, until thick and bubbling. If you want to blend the onions and stock, do so now, by putting any but the blackened onions in the blender goblet with the beef stock, and liquidizing.

Or leave the stock just as it is, straight out of the tub.

Take the saucepan off the heat, and gradually whisk in the beef stock. When all the stock’s added, put the pan back on the heat and cook, whisking to make sure any lumps are banished, on low for 2 minutes. Crumble in the stilton, then drop in the redcurrant jelly and turn up the heat to let the gravy bubble slightly. Then the remaining tablespoon of port, along with any bloody juices put into gravy boat and serve.

Ingredients 2 mixed-colour peppers 1 fresh red chilli 3 ripe tomatoes , on the vine 6 spring onions

1 bunch of fresh coriander 2 limes extra virgin olive oil 4 corn tortillas 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds

Chipotle Tabasco sauce 1 x 400g tin of black beans 1 ripe avocado 20 g feta cheese.

Treat Yourself SERVES 4 COOKS IN45 MINUTES DIFFICULTYSUPER EASY Ingredients 200 g stale ciabatta loaf 600 g ripe mixed tomatoes, roughly chopped sea salt freshly ground black pepper 1 handful small capers , drained 1 small red onion , peeled and very finely sliced 280 g jarred red peppers , drained and roughly chopped 8 anchovy fillets in oil , drained and finely sliced (optional) red wine vinegar extra virgin olive oil a bunch of fresh basil.

Method Tear the ciabatta into rough

3cm pieces and place on a tray. Leave aside in a warm place for around 30 minutes – this helps to dry it out.

Place the tomatoes in a bowl and season with salt and pepper. Rinse the capers, squeezing out any excess liquid and add to the bowl, along with the onion, peppers, ciabatta and anchovies, if using. Toss the mixture together with your hands, then stir in 2 tablespoons of vinegar and about 3 times as much extra virgin olive oil. Taste and add a little more salt, pepper, vinegar or oil, if needed.

Tear in the basil leaves, stir together and serve. Delicious with barbecued meats or roast chicken.

Crispy tortillas 2-3 fresh green chillies, to taste, 2 limes, 3 avocados, 1 large bunch fresh coriander, sea salt, freshly ground black pepper, 12 flour tortillas. 3 lugs extra virgin olive oil Preheat the oven to 200°C/400°F/gas 6.

Remove and discard the seeds from the chillies, squeeze the juice from the limes, peel the avocados, remove the stone and chop them and roughly chop the fresh coriander. To make the guacamole, mash the chillies, lime juice, avocado and coriander until creamy.

Season with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, and pour into a serving dish. Brush the tortillas with the oil. Lay them on a baking tray, bake for 5 mins until golden brown, leave them to cool. Break into wedges if you like, and serve the tortillas with the guacamole.

Place the oven on to 180ºC/350ºF/gas 4.

Place a griddle pan over a high heat and cook the whole peppers, chilli, tomatoes and trimmed spring onions until soft and charred.

Put the peppers and chilli in a bowl, cover with cling film and set aside for 5 minutes.

Dice the tomatoes and spring onions, then add to another bowl. Peel, deseed and dice the peppers and chillies, then add to the tomatoes and spring onions.

Pick in a few coriander leaves, season, then mix in a good squeeze of lime juice and a drizzle of oil. Wipe the griddle pan and return to the heat.

Cut the tortillas into wedges and arrange over two baking sheets. Bake in the oven for 5 minutes, or until golden.

Place a large frying pan over a high heat and toast the cumin seeds for a few seconds.

Add the Tabasco sauce and beans and cook for a few minutes, or until thick, stirring occasionally.

Peel, destone and slice the avocado into wedges, then drizzle with the remaining lime juice.

Arrange the tortillas in a bowl. Top with the beans, salsa, dressed avocado, feta and pick over the remaining coriander, then serve.

Baked sweet potatoes, avocado & queso fresco Ingredients 4 sweet potatoes olive oil 2 ripe avocados 1-2 limes 1 handful of pumpkin seeds 150 g Mexican queso fresco

Method Preheat the oven to 180ºC/ gas 4.

Drizzle the potatoes with oil, sprinkle with sea salt and black pepper, wrap in foil and bake in the oven for 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes, or until tender.

When the potatoes are nearly done, destone and roughly chop the avocados and toss with the juice from half a lime.

Toast the pumpkin seeds in a dry pan for a few minutes until slightly golden.

Top the potatoes with the avocado, crumble over the cheese and sprinkle with the toasted seeds.

Delicious with a hibiscus, chipotle & tamarind salsa.

Serve with lime wedges for squeezing.

San Miguel at Altoreal

Our last meeting of the month saw 39 members and a couple of guests make the trek to Altoreal, a course that used to be quite a favourite on our regular circuit ...... and it may well reclaim its previous popularity.

We were fortunate to be blessed with a gorgeous day which gave us wallto-wall sunshine and only a light wind allowing both bronze and silver categories to each have their 1st and 2nd position players beating par, it was just the gold division that seemed to struggle a bit with a top score of 33. Congratulations (again!) must go to Keith for a magnificent 43 – which comes complete with a BIG trim !!

Warm this Winter

Last weekend Annette had the pleasure of meeting a very wonderful young lady who is called Cherry K to accept her donation of 700 euros. Cherry went to the children’s home just before Christmas and at that time they were needing winter bedding for the children’s beds and Cherry very kindly

volunteered to raise the money to buy what was needed. So during her gigs at different venues she did raffles and money raising events to achieve her goal.

We’d like to say a very big thank you Cherry K, and everyone who helped you, for the love and kindness you have shown to our children.

Costa Calida Country Music Club At our March dance we celebrated our 4th birthday, Tex Mex provided the live entertainment with their “repetoire“ coming mainly from the Texas Tornados and the Mavericks We said goodbye to our German friends, until such times as they return in October.

We have a monthly dance, on the first Friday of each month in Marianos Camposol, starting at 7.45pm. Entry is only €4 Our next night is on Friday 7th April --This will be a big screen/ projector night, so if you want to hear a particular song let us know through our Facebook

During this time it has always been our objective to book a Spanish country band, but there were none to book, so we were delighted to come across Los Alacranes, a group recently formed a 5 piece band with banjo, fiddle, accordion etc They have been booked for Friday 5th May, a night to look forward to. Ann and Roys line dance classes continue in Camposol Culture Centre on Wednesday and Thursdays 968 974 951.

The Celts Club de Golf We played our most recent Open Day at La Serena last Saturday.

Weather conditions were ideal when we began the round but became more challenging as the round progressed as witnessed by the scoring.

The golf course was as is the custom presented to a very high standard and again we must thank Wayne and his team for their efforts.

To the staff in the pro-shop thank you, Jose and Karolina for preparing the cards and the results. Our competition committee are doing sterling work thank you Camillus and Philip. Can players please return their cards as soon as

possible to the shop on the open days so that they can generate the results. If you fail to return your card to the pro-shop you cannot have your handicap adjusted when the scores are sent to Madrid.

Can I remind prize winners that we hold our monthly presentation of all prizes at each of the Open Days for that month’s competitions, if you are not going to attend can you appoint a member to collect your prize on your behalf. Several members of the audience asked if this was a weekly event to dance for the public on market day and therefore they will try to organise this in the future.

Half of mobility-limited people and six in ten overall would have a higher quality of life with an autonomous and connected vehicle, a new study conducted by the SMMT has shown.

71% of respondents aged between 17 and 24 saw autonomous cars bringing improvement to their lives – the most positive demographic – although the general population was 56% positive overall. This still leaves 44% not feeling positive. However, trust of the public is often cited as a barrier-to-entry for autonomous cars. The two largest stress-relieving attractions for those surveyed were autonomous braking and self-diagnosis of faults, although the main benefit of those surveyed was the comparative ease of going out; 49% of those with mobility-related disabilities said that an autonomous car would allow them to leave the house more often.

More widely, the advent of mobility schemes promises money savings for young people, with 29% agreeing that the cost of owning and running a car was restrictive, while 33% dubbed public transport as too expensive and infrequent.

New Kia Picanto 2017 review

The Kia Picanto’s funky looks, competitive prices and long standard warranty have always won it fans, but in a city car class that features extremely strong rivals, such as the Hyundai i10 and Volkswagen Up, it has failed to rise to the top in our tests. But that could be about to change, because although the Picanto’s overall dimensions remain the same for 2017, there have been comprehensive changes elsewhere.

Firstly, it has been treated to a fresh new exterior look, followed by an upgraded interior and a new infotainment system on the inside.

Kia has also moved the Picanto’s front and rear wheels farther apart to improve its ride and interior space, as well as revised and stiffened its suspension and quickened its steering for a sportier drive. Increased soundproofing should ensure it’s a quieter place to while away the miles, too.

Perhaps the biggest news, though, is the addition of a new 98bhp turbocharged threecylinder 1.0-litre petrol engine, which joins the non-turbo three-cylinder 1.0 and fourcylinder 1.2 petrols carried over from the previous model. Each engine gets a five-speed manual gearbox as standard, or the 1.2 can be specified with a four-speed auto.

What’s the 2017 Kia Picanto like to drive?

Unfortunately, the new turbo engine doesn’t arrive until later this year and so far we’ve only had a chance to try the other two options. The 83bhp 1.2 is the smoother engine, has the better throttle response and can deliver a fair pace if pushed hard, but begins to get pretty vocal when you do so.

It’s the preferable engine if you live in a hilly area, though, because the 66bhp 1.0 can feel decidedly flat in such circumstances - it had to be thrashed hard in the manual gearbox’s lower gears around our undulating test route to maintain momentum.

However, it doesn’t feel out of its depth bumbling through town, and will probably find more buyers with its better fuel economy and CO2 emissions.

It doesn’t quite rival a VW Up for driving enjoyment, but that quicker steering - while a little vague around the straight-ahead weights up nicely and is pleasingly precise.

Once settled into a bend, the Picanto also grips well and its body remains well composed.

Most importantly, all this h elps make nippy urban driving a cinch.

HarleyDavidson Roadster As the latest member of Harley-Davidson’s Sportster family, the Roadster is a lean, aggressively styled air-cooled V-twin designed to recapture some of the hot-rod spirit that made the original Sportster a hit following its launch in 1957. But Harley has been careful not to repeat the recent mistake that it made when attempting to create a sportier Sportster.

The XR1200, launched in 2008, was inspired by the legendary XR750 dirt-track racer.

It featured a tuned Sportster engine in a new chassis with sharper geometry and

firmer suspension. By Harley standards it was fast and handled well, but its styling missed the mark. The XR sold poorly and was soon dropped. The Roadster’s 1,202cc V-twin engine and steel-framed chassis are shared with the Forty-Eight, but the new bike’s tank retains the distinctive peanut shape while growing in capacity from a minuscule 7.9 litres to a merely compact 12.5. The minimalist look is enhanced by cut-down fenders and a low seat that is just about large enough for an occasional pillion.

Skoda Vision E concept points to electric SUV

Skoda will treat us to an electric SUV in 2020 and the new Skoda Vision E concept provides a very good idea of how it will look Skoda will present a thinly veiled glimpse of a radical new electric vehicle at the 2017 Shanghai Motor Show in the shape of the Skoda Vision E concept.

Official teaser images released by the company show that the car will be a swoopy four-door crossover coupe, and CEO Bernhard Maier confirmed to Auto Express that we’ll see a production version of the Vision E on sale by 2020.

The model, based on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform (which also underpins VW’s I.D concept) will kickstart Skoda’s electric programme in earnest, with five pure electric cars

scheduled to be on sale by 2025. These will be joined by an array of plug-in hybrid models, with the Superb already slated for 2019.

Insiders have confirmed to Auto Express that plug-in versions of the Kodiaq, new Yeti and next Octavia would be feasible, too.

The Vision E is a rakish, highriding crossover with clear Kodiaq styling influences in places. However, the company is keen to emphasise that the model should not be considered a fully-fledged SUV and pointed to design features which differentiate it, specifically round wheel arches and horizontal ‘secondary’ headlights, which will remain the preserve of what Skoda terms its ‘road cars’. The brand’s SUVs, meanwhile, will continue to sport square wheel arches

and more vertical secondary lights – a clear pointer on what to expect from the imminent new Yeti.

Positioning the Vision E in this way will also leave some space for the forthcoming Kodiaq Coupe, which is due to go on sale in China in 2019 (and is still not confirmed for Europe due to a lack of production capacity here).

The Vision E’s front is dominated by what is termed a plunging ‘Skoda line’ light that links the LED headlights.

Underneath it is a blanked off ‘Phantom grille’, which sits above a one-piece light that runs across nearly the full width of the car.

More strip lighting features on the Vision E’s flanks, while the rear is marked out by a rather abstract interpretation of the company’s familiar C-shaped lights. The concept sits on 21-inch wheels.

The concept also signals Skoda’s first significant step into the world of autonomous driving, with level 3 autonomy promised.

This means that it can operate independently in jams, go into autopilot on the motorway, park on its own and search for car park spaces.

For this month’s meeting a group of 25 players visited the established course at Hacienda Riquelme taking advantage of the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services.

This is the first time our golf society has played this course and we forgot how difficult it can be with numerous sand and water hazards and tight pin positions.

BUT the course was in very good condition and we will return.

The only problem we encountered was to follow a Scandinavian ladies golf society with clearly many beginners and 5 ½ hours and two shaves later we completed the course.

Federer, after returning from a six-month injury absence, broke once in each set on the Crandon Park hardcourt for his fourth consecutive victory over the Spaniard.

However, Nadal still leads in head-to-head record at 23-14, entirely due to his superiority on clay. But Federer now leads 10-9 on hardcourt.

Federer, who beat Nadal in the 2017 Australian Open final and also at the 2017 Indian Wells Masters, has now beaten Nadal in four straight matches for the first time in his career.

Manchester United plan to trigger the £85 million release clause in Antoine Griezmann’s contract at the end of the season as it emerged Paul Pogba has been making efforts to reassure the Atletico Madrid striker the English weather is not as bad as he fears. The news comes as Jose Mourinho dismissed as “absurd” suggestions he is plotting a £173 million move to sign Barcelona and Brazil forward Neymar and stressed that he “always [tries] to be objective and pragmatic” with regard to his transfer demands. Fifa looks into leg-break

Fifa has opened proceedings against Wales full-back Neil Taylor after his leg-breaking challenge on the Republic of Ireland’s Seamus Coleman.

The Everton defender, 28, was taken off on a stretcher after the tackle, for which Taylor was sent off, during Friday’s World Cup qualifier in Dublin.

Coleman was taken to hospital and required surgery on a double break.

Taylor, 28, will be suspended for the qualifier in Serbia in June, but could have his one-game ban extended by Fifa.

Wales captain Ashley Williams said Taylor wanted to visit Coleman in hospital, and sent him a text message

from the Aviva Stadium.

“Neil was gutted. He was sitting on the floor virtually in tears,” he said “Even people who don’t know Seamus like I do were gutted.

“He asked me to check if it would be OK to go to see Seamus in hospital. He got his number off me and sent him a text straight away. “When I found out it was a broken leg it made me feel sick inside because it’s someone who I like so much and is one of my mates.” Taylor began his professional career at Wrexham before moving to Swansea in 2010, helping the club win promotion to the Premier League in 2011. March was another great month for the S. F. Costa Cobras RFC with more players and coaches joining the ranks. We are now getting ready for the Alan Davies memorial Elche 7’s on 20th May. On 6th May the fun day will be on from 10.00 to 14.00 and we are looking to have a number of stalls to help raise funds for the team so come on down and see what the club is about and also to have some fun, maybe even join in the games. This will be held at the clubs training pitch in San Fulgencio.

We will also be looking at setting up some 7’s games with local teams to get some experience before the tournament.

The pub quiz held on the 31st March at the Power Pub and was a great success for the club as we came out on top for the 2nd time in 3 attempts. All the prizes we have won so far have been donated to the fun day. We are now training at the football ground in San Fulgencio on Monday and Wednesday from 20.30-22.00 and then meeting up at Power Pub in the town after training and using this is our club house. All the players are training at the same time, but once we get more juniors and seniors we will be doing two separate sessions.

American Lexi Thompson was left in tears after being handed a four-stroke penalty while leading the final round of the first major of the season - and then losing a play-off to So Yeon Ryu. She incorrectly replaced a marked ball in Saturday’s third round - a TV viewer spotted the offence and told officials.

Thompson was leading the ANA Inspiration by two shots when told of the penalty after her 12th hole.

She birdied the 18th to force a play-off which Ryu won at the first hole.

Thompson, 22, had missed a 20-foot eagle putt on the last that would have given her a sensational victory.

Oxford made it four wins in five years after beating Cambridge by just over a length in the 163rd Boat Race.

Oxford led throughout and although Cambridge tried to stay in touch, they were unable to get past the Dark Blues.

Earlier, Cambridge took advantage of a dreadful start by Oxford to claim a first win in the Women’s Boat Race since 2012.

They dominated to win by 11 lengths in a course record of 18 minutes and 33 seconds.
