The Portavoz del Grupo Municipal Socialista and Diputado Regional, Manuel Soler spoke of the Group’s sorrow at “the greatest misfortune due to the floods’ - the death of a neighbour who lived in La Torrecilla. That, together with the six victims living in our region, brings to seven the death toll in our community. We send our deepest condolences to the families of the victims.”

He stressed that ‘Misfortune has struck the areas around La Huerta de Lorca and Puerto Lumbrero and El Esparragal. Even more damage has been sustained in the surroundings of Campillo, La Torrecilla, La Escucha, Purias and El Esparragal, where the houses are completely flooded, with all the furniture and belongings lost and, in many cases, with significant damage to infrastructure, so much so that some of them will have to be declared ruins.”

The Socialist leader added that “in these districts all the crops have been lost, and thousands of pigs and calves have been drowned. Among this number are two small farms; one where 600 sheep and their lambs were drowned, and the other where 300 goats and their kids perished except for one solitary goat, who escaped to safety on a large mound of earth nearby.”

He added that they are removing the dead animals found on farms, ‘but there are many animal carcasses scattered throughout the area as well as pigs, calves and small ruminants have managed to escape and are wandering loose in the countryside.

Neighbours are helping each other, bailing out flooded areas, clearing mud and removing animals from farms, but need help for other tasks.’

He stressed that it is important that the Comunidad de Regantes fix faults that have occurred in their water distribution networks and water service resumes in these districts as soon as possible, for the cleaning of homes, farms, machinery and all kinds of appliances.

Sport Torrevieja

During the past week children from all over Spain have been kept out of school, with action from the parents of children from the Costa Blanca boycotting schools last Thursday and Friday. These actions have been undertaken with the sanction of CEAPA, the Association of Parents, acting in support of the staff and teachers who are suffering as a result of the financial and staffing cuts made by both the regional and national governments.

Hundreds took part in a demonstration in Torrevieja’s Plaza Mayor in a show of support for teachers, parents and children. A Spokesperson for CEAPA said that they were ‘standing up for the rights of their children. The educational cuts that have been forced upon us and them by the government amount to a direct attack on the rights of students of all ages and their families. We consider the situation very serious.

We deserve answers as to why our children are being deprived of key educational facilities, teachers and materials. These savage cuts to the Spanish educational system are completely unacceptable.’

She added: ‘As a Confederation we wholly support students and their families. We

are protesting because we will not accept the dismantling of the Spanish education system. We do not accept the withdrawal of financial support for essential items such as text books, school transport and lunchtime facilities. We regard the withdrawal of funding for text books as a direct contravention of the children’s rights to a decent and full education.’

‘The educational cuts that have been forced upon us by the government are a direct attack on the rights of students of all ages and their families. The situation that our children find themselves in is very serious, and we deserve answers as to why our children are being deprived of key educational facilities, teachers and materials.

Many families, already suffering cuts and in difficulties due to the economic crisis, have no choice but to completely abandon their children’s education This is a system which will ultimately and exclusively benefit private education purely due to the fact that sufficient funding for a decent education is not available, and education will become a prerogative of the wealthy.

Calpe, Altea, Benidorm and La Nucia

The Charity EMAÚS has issued a warning about bogus collectors knocking on doors and requesting money for the charity, which runs 7 children’s homes, a baby unit, a shelter for women and an old people’s home.

Montserrat Fiter, President of EMAÚS, said the fake collectors were ‘a new problem’ and underlined that the charity did not knock on doors. ‘It is not the way we work.’

She stressed.

The bogus collectors are very plausible, even down to presenting apparently genuine paperwork. They are requesting money, even specifying the amount, up to 100€, and in some cases are selling goods apparently to raise funds for the charity.

Anyone approached at the door by any person who says that they are collecting for EMAÚS should be aware that they are not genuine collectors sanctioned by the charity – who stressed emphatically that they never collect door-to-door.

Benidorm/Denia

Linea 9: Supporters of the Benidorm to Denia railway service were planning a demonstration by train last Friday. They were to march from Denia Bus Station in Plaza Archduke Charles and head for the terminus of Line 9 at the train station. Organisers hoped people would travel on the Tram service to show support for the service. A 900 signature petition has been handed to the Alcaldesa of Gata, Ana Maria Soler.

The petition calls for the preservation of the northern stretch of the Alicante to Denia railway link to be maintained .

The event, a traditional festival in Germany to celebrate beer in all its diversity, has been brought to Teulada and Morair for the first time this year.

It was voted a great success, with over 3,000 litres of beer being drunk by over 2,000 attendees, who also enjoyed various typical German dishes of food.

Mixed fortunes for Rajoy in regional elections

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s Popular Party (PP) enjoyed mixed fortunes in yesterday’s regional elections, consolidating their majority in his native Galicia, but losing ground to the nationalist party in the Basque Country.

Away from Rajoy’s homeland, however, the conservative Basque Nationalist Party emerged as the winner in Sunday’s elections in the Basque Country, closely followed by the Euskal Herria Bildu coalition of left-wing separatists.

In Galicia, the centre-right PP not only held on to, but increased its absolute majority, winning three extra seats to secure 41 of the 75 up for grabs in the regional assembly. The Socialists took 18 seats, while two nationalist parties secured 16 seats.

The Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) won 27 seats in the regional parliament, while Bildu took 21. The opposition Socialist Party trailed in third place with 16 seats, followed by Rajoy’s Popular Party (PP) with just ten.

Orihuela

The Alcaldesa of Orihuela, Monserrate Guillén, with 15 other Alcaldes and representatives from around the region, attended a meeting with the President of Valencia, Alberto Fabra, on the economic crisis and how best to boost employment within the Community.

On the agenda was a request by the Alcaldesa that the President to liquidate all debts that are currently being held by municipalities until the economic crisis subsides - Orihuela’s debts amount to €10 million.

An employment plan was agreed at the meeting, to include an investment package of €45 million.

It was felt by those attending that the President and the Generalitat is at least prepared to try and help the unemployed citizens of the regions.

The meeting took place in the Palau de la Generalitat, and afterwards Monserrate Guillén stressed that employers must be approached. ‘The plan includes hiring incentives that are subject to a number of conditions which have to be accepted by them for the plan to work.’

In detail the plan involves a €45 million investment over the next three years, €15 million of which will be made by the various municipalities, €15 million from other delegations and the remaining €15 million will be subsidised by the Valencia Government.

This is subject to the hiring of two employees per 1000 inhabitants, and the investment of one euro per person per year by each of the parties involved.

In exchange for hiring the employees, the employer will receive 600€ for three months, after which time the employee must be offered a contract.

Bildu was established following the Spanish government’s decision to ban the political wing of the armed separatist group ETA nearly ten years ago. The party represents the political ambitions of those who in the past supported ETA, although unlike its predecessor, it has publicly condemned the use of violence for political ends.

With Bildu and PNV expected to form a coalition, there is widespread belief that calls for a referendum on Basque independence are not far away.

This would be yet another thorn in the side for central government in Madrid, especially as the result comes weeks before elections in another Spanish region, Catalonia, where calls for a referendum on independence are also growing.

The Armilla airbase have two extra special staff members - Carlos Villalon and Sandra Lupiáñez!

Sandra is a mechanic, and services the helicopters that are flown by, among others, Carlos.

Carlos began work at the airbase in 2004, and Sandra joined the workforce in 2007. The two are part of the Patrol Aspa, a ‘family’ that since 2003 has the mission of teaching new pilots the art of flying, whether for a standard flight, rescue, and even acrobatic, using the ‘Hummingbird’ helicopter.

However, what makes these two special is that in 2009 they became the only two co-workers who are also married!

Carlos and Sandra say they do not take work home.

‘We discuss things, but work does not transcend domestic life.’ Said Sandra.

The rank difference is not something that transfers stress to married life. ‘Not that we have noted’ said Carlos. ‘In fact, the reverse is more likely!’

He joked. She added ‘At home the relationship is completely normal, as in all families.’

Despite having been married for three years and resident in Armilla for that time, Carlos is going to have to pack up and leave for Madrid after being promoted to commander. ‘This change of destination is intrinsic to the profession, and my ‘marriage’ with the Army.’ Joked Carlos. ‘Change of destination is assumed and positive in military life. This office carries with it relocation. It is rare to be so many years in one place.’ admits Sandra.

Fast-food chain McDonald’s has announced plans to set up 60 new branches in Spain, which will create 3,000 new jobs.

This will mean a total of 500 restaurants in the country by 2014, says the company representative for Spain, Patricia Abril.

McDonald’s is keen to promote employment in Spain, which is why 75 per cent of its raw ingredients come from national sources with lettuce and tomatoes grown in farms and allotments around the country, and the remaining 25 per cent from other EU nations.

Suppliers of ingredients in 28 provinces throughout 13 of Spain’s 17 autonomous regions provide jobs for 3,800 people, and the quality of produce in the country is one of the reasons why McDonald’s wants to expand nationally, says Sra Abril.

The restaurants themselves currently employ 22,000 people and have been in Spain for 31 years.

Last year, the chain recorded profits of 928 million euros, a rise of 9.1 per cent on figures for 2010.

Filming or photographing police on duty may be made illegal Taking photos or filming the police while they are working could be made illegal if a new law is passed.

Ignacio Cosidó, head of the State police governing body, says in principal the Citizen Safety Law would prevent anyone recording officers on duty and diffusing them over the internet ‘where this poses a danger’ to the person filming or photographing.

It is also to prevent people getting in the way when police are trying to deal with violent or difficult individuals or wilful damage to property.

But some say this is merely a way of stopping the general public or reporters gathering evidence against officers in order to sue them for aggressive behaviour.

Spain’s branch of Amnesty International has called for the ministry of the interior to punish the riot police involved in the September 25 protests in Madrid over ‘undue force and violence’ used against members of the public.

Its leader, Esteban Beltrán, says passersby and tourists were beaten and roughly pushed around, as were reporters, and that officers used tear gas and truncheons

at Atocha station despite these being illegal in enclosed spaces.

Beltrán added that cases brought by members of the public concerning alleged violence by police were nearly always dropped as the officers’ faces were covered and could not be identified, but he claims Amnesty International has enough evidence on film, photograph, in writing and from witness statements to show that the police did indeed use an unnecessary level of force.

Spain’s ministry of the interior insists that the Citizen Safety Law would not hinder freedom of speech or expression, but was aimed at preventing the public from coming to harm by getting too close to violent situations, from hindering the police in their work or ‘endangering the physical or moral integrity’ of officers.

The ministry stresses that the law would not prevent taking photos and filming during public demonstrations per se.

But the police union, SUP, says it could be ‘very tricky’ getting the new law to work, given the grey areas and loopholes that could crop up in defining situations where recording and taking pictures supposed a hindrance or a risk.

Ryanair forced to compensate family for denying boarding to four-year-old daughter

Ryanair has been ordered to pay compensation to a family for refusing to allow their four-year-old daughter to board a plane from Valencia to Palma de Mallorca as she was not carrying any identification.

Spanish law dictates that children under the age of 14 do not need to carry a passport or DNI – national identity card – if they are travelling with their parents or legal guardians.

The judge said that this was the case no matter what nationality the airline operating in Spain was.

At the time, the stewards told the parents they could board the aircraft if they wished, but that their child could not, to which the parents replied, “are you going to look after her while we’re away, then?”

According to the judge, by refusing to allow a minor to get onto a plane, it was automatically considered that said minor’s parents or guardians had been denied boarding.

And there was no legal reason why they

should be, the court stated.

Where the parents are carrying valid ID and have met all requirements in place for boarding the airline, they cannot legally be separated from underage members of the family, and underage children are not permitted to travel alone.

The Irish low-cost airline did not turn up to the court hearing over the incident which occurred in March last year and for which the parents were represented by the Comunidad Valenciana’s regional consumer association.

In the defendant’s absence, the judge awarded 1,000 euros in compensation.

The plaintiffs said they were satisfied with the result, but felt that the award was too low, since it did not reflect the stress, hassle and time on holiday lost as a result of having to make alternative travel arrangements.

They had to catch trains and buses and finally ended up in Sevilla in order to get on a plane to take them to Mallorca.

Student and teacher protests take over Madrid

Yet another demonstration in cities across Spain – this time over funding cuts in education – took place last Thursday to mark the last of a three-day school strike throughout the country.

ThinkSpain reported that Madrid was the focal point seeing tens of thousands of parents, pupils and teachers taking to the streets, although similar protests were held in Valencia, Zaragoza, Oviedo and Sevilla, among other provincial capitals.

For the first time in history, an education-related protest was organised by PTA federations rather than unions or pressure groups, and surrounded the Congress building, the ministry of education headquarters, the Puerta del Sol square and the Plaza de Neptuno.

They called for president Mariano Rajoy and education minister José Ignacio Wert to resign, accusing them of ‘dismantling’ the State schooling system.

Teachers have been made redundant across the country

Amnesty International has called for Spain’s ministry of the interior to punish the police officers who acted with alleged ‘undue force’ during the protests of September 25 in Madrid.

The worldwide peace group has written to minister Jorge Fernández Díaz asking for an investigation to be opened into whether indeed officers used unnecessary brutality.

Head of Amnesty International for Spain, Esteban Beltrán, says the association has compiled video, photographic, spoken and written information that they consider ‘worrying’.

These include images of passers-by and tourists being hit by police, particularly in the middle of a confrontation outside Atocha station in Madrid.

“There was no threat to the police, and yet they used anti-riot material – which is against the law in enclosed spaces,” Beltrán said in his missive to the minister.

Elements of concern also included the ‘lack of clear and visible identification’ by the police before acting, with their faces covered and no identity card shown.

This is fundamental and is even stated as such in a circular issued by the ministry for the interior in 2007.

“This is not an academic question – it’s a matter of being immune to legal liability,” said Beltrán.

“In the majority of cases where alleged attacks by police on members of the public were brought to trial, these were thrown out because there was no way of telling which officer was behind it.”

Beltrán also referred to ‘hitting reporters without any clear motive or provocation’.

“Whilst it’s true that the State police do act in difficult circumstances and that, yes, there were acts of violence during this major protest, it is very important that the use of force should be a last resort only,” Beltrán concluded.

During the September 25 protests in Madrid, 35 people were arrested and 60 became injured during confrontations at Atocha station and also outside the Congress building.

Many witnesses and people caught up in the scuffles say officers began to beat and push around pedestrians and bystanders who were nothing to do with the demonstration, or who were involved but peacefully so.

One mother in a recent press conference famously threw a tupperware container at the then president of

the Comunidad de Madrid, Esperanza Aguirre, who has since resigned to spend more time with her family.

And Wert himself caused a sensation earlier this week when he said publicly: “Investing more in education is not going to create better students.”

Organisers say the protest was on the part of parents who ‘find it more and more difficult to get up every day, look their children in the eye and explain to them why they have to give up their studies, why they can’t have a proper meal at school and why they don’t have the textbooks they need’.

Students and tutors from the Madrid Complutense and Madrid Autonomous Regional universities have been staging a three-day lock-in and joined in the protest, hitting out over price hikes and cuts in teacher numbers.

Some classes at both colleges were held outside in full public view for ‘visibility’ reasons and to enable students to join in the protests without missing classes.

Over 1,500 jobs are being offered to Spaniards within Austria’s hotel and catering industry, and a further 2,000 places on training courses.

The Austrian Hoteliers’ union (ÖHV) says: “Whilst in the south of Europe, an entire generation is in despair [because of not having jobs], we have trouble filling vacancies.”

Peter Peer, president of the ÖHV, says the demand for staff in hotels in Austria is ‘extremely high’, particularly in the cities and in Tirol, close to the Swiss border.

This applies both in summer, when city-breakers and people seeking trips to the rural heart of Europe flock to the country, as well as in winter during the skiing season and the Christmas markets.

Hotels, bars and restaurants in Austria are looking for waiters and waitresses, bar staff, cleaners, chefs, receptionists and other assistants who are willing to start immediately.

There were 1,721 vacancies last month and 2,187 places on hotel and catering training courses, but Peer says there are probably more now that the ski season is

about to start.

And Vienna, as well as being a popular city-break destination, also hosts more business and political conferences than anywhere else in the world.

Depending upon the job and the level of training required of – and held by – the candidate, salaries reach an average of 21,000 to 25,000 euros a year, being between 1,500 and 1,800 per month over 14 months, in a similar system to Spain’s summer and Christmas doublewage scheme.

Starting salaries may be lower, but the minimum wage is 1,300 euros a month gross, or 1,050 euros a month after tax in 14 monthly payments.

Apprentices on training courses get 574 euros a month gross in the first year, which rises to a before-tax figure of 640 euros, 768 euros and finally 827 euros each year of the four-year course.

Knowledge of the German language is essential and English is also highly valued.

EU summit: Compromise deal on eurozone bank supervisor EU leaders have agreed to set up a single eurozone banking supervisor - a major step towards a banking union.

In a report by the BBC, a legislative framework is to be in place by 1 January next year, with the body starting work later in 2013.

The European Central Bank-led mechanism will have the power to intervene in any bank within the eurozone.

The deal appears to be a compromise between France and Germany, who earlier disagreed over the timing and over the number of banks the ECB would oversee.

The timetable remains important, because only when the body is fully operational will the eurozone’s rescue fund inject cash directly into ailing banks - so important for countries like Spain, says the BBC’s Europe editor, Gavin Hewitt.

The deal was, at best, an uneasy compromise between the French and Germans and much wrangling lies ahead, our correspondent says.

France and the EU Commission wanted joint banking supervision, with the ECB in the lead role, to become operational in January 2013.

But German Chancellor Angela Merkel stressed that national budget discipline should be the priority.

Germany had been at odds with the European Commission over the scope of the proposed ECB supervision. Under the draft plan, all 6,000 banks in the 17-nation eurozone would be included Germany wanted it limited to the biggest, “systemic” banks.

Previously, the German government has expressed a desire to retain supervisory responsibility within Germany over the country’s Landesbanks - stateowned banks that play a key role in the economies and state finances of Germany’s federal regions.

Announcing the result of talks early on Wednesday, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy said the 27 EU member states had agreed to set up - by the end of this year - “a Single Supervisory Mechanism [SSM], to prevent banking risks and crossborder contagion from emerging”.

“Once this is agreed, the SSM could probably be effectively operational in the course of 2013,” he said.

EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said that the ECB “will be able to intervene if needed in any bank in the euro area”.

With new supervisory powers the ECB would be able to act early on to prevent a systemically dangerous accumulation of debt on a bank’s balance sheets.

And once the legal framework is in place the new permanent rescue fund, the European Stability Mechanism (ESM), will be able to recapitalise struggling banks directly, without adding to a country’s sovereign debt pile.

ECB supervision will not extend to the UK - Europe’s main financial centre, but outside the euro.

However, the BBC’s Business editor Robert Peston says there is now a serious risk that the UK will always be outvoted when decisions are taken on the regulation of banking and finance in the EU as a whole.

Poet ‘Death Sentence’ Appeal Thrown Out of Court

An appeal against the death sentence of Elche poet Miguel Hernández has been thrown out by the Constitutional Court.

The family of the late literary legend, who was condemned to execution on January 18, 1940 for ‘adhesion to rebellion’ against Franco’s régime, want to see Hernández given a posthumous reprieve.

They say his arrest and sentence was unconstitutional, but the court found that various articles in the Constitution in force at the time – dating back to 1890 – meant his fate was within the boundaries of legality.

Hernández, one of the last and youngest members of the so-called Generation of ‘27 – a group of writers and artists whose works reflected the political and social turbulence of their era – was given a last-minute stay of grace when his execution was exchanged for a 30-year jail term.

But the poet only lived for another two years, and died behind bars in 1942.

His ascendants applied to the Supreme Court for his conviction to be overruled and for their late relative to be acquitted in accordance with the law of historic memory, which seeks to limit the social and emotional damage caused by General Franco.

But the court said it was unable to provide individual reprieves, only collective ones for the whole society group which had been convicted for the same offence.

It was then that the family applied to the Constitutional Court, only to be told that the Constitution which was current at the time of Hernández’s sentence did not make this illegal.

It is more than a theoretical possibility that the interests of the UK and City of London in shaping financial rules will be systematically ignored or overridden, he says.

Both Germany and France appeared to be claiming victory in the negotiations.

The German chancellor said that the agreement was that “banks must be supervised in a differentiated way. That means that some will be direct... at the ECB level and others indirectly, via the national authorities.”

She also said that ECB President Mario Draghi had told her it would be a matter of some months before the ECB was ready to take on its new role.

Mrs Merkel confirmed that the EU bailout funds would not be used to directly inject risk-absorbing capital into troubled eurozone banks until the new supervisory arrangements were in place.

A decision about how to recapitalise Spain’s banks will be made in the next couple of weeks, according to Jean-Claude Juncker, who chairs the Eurogroup of finance ministers.

French President Francois Hollande said there had been no discussion of a possible request by the Spanish government for a bailout of its own finances.

But he said “the worst is behind us”.

“We are on track to solve the problems that for too long have been paralysing the eurozone and made it vulnerable,” Mr Hollande told a news conference.

Torrevieja murder suspect denied bail

A man suspected of murdering his girlfriend in their home in Torrevieja has been remanded in custody without bail.

The accused, 45, is said to have regularly beaten the victim, according to a female friend of the latter. But the woman always refused to report her partner as she was scared he would kill her, the friend said.

The body of the victim, a 48-year-old woman originally from Alcoi, was found inside a cupboard in the rented house on C/ Orihuela in Torrevieja (Alicante) at 11.00hrs last Monday by the cleaning ladies.

They had gone into the apartment to tidy it up for a tenant due to move in shortly.

Alerted by the stench which filled all the rooms, they found the woman’s decomposed corpse after an extensive search.

Her boyfriend, who had an injunction preventing him from approaching her, was arrested later that day at the bus station in the own. He is said to be the previous owner of the apartment, which now belonged to an estate agency, and had been living there with the deceased.

Although it was initially thought she had been beaten to death, an autopsy found she had perished through lack of oxygen. The accused is a known long-term drug-taker, Guardia Civil officers say, and they have not ruled out he may have given the woman drugs and accidentally overdosed her.

But the woman’s close friend said she herself had once cured her wounds after the suspect reportedly stabbed her on one occasion, and he has a criminal record for violence against her. The female magistrate charged the man with murder and also offences relating to breaking a restraining order.

Supertramp were a British rock band formed in 1969 under the name Daddy before renaming themselves in early 1970.

Though their music was initially categorized as progressive rock, they incorporated a combination of traditional rock and art rock into their music. The band’s work is marked by the inventive songwriting of Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson and the distinctive voice of Hodgson. Supertramp was also well known for their prominent use of the Wurlitzer electric piano and saxophone.

They were one of the first groups to be signed to the UK branch of A&M Records and their first album “Supertramp” was released on 14 July 1970 in the UK and Canada only (it would not be issued in the US until late 1977).

Stylistically, the album was fairly typical of progressive rock of the era. Despite receiving a good deal of critical praise, the album did not attract a large audience. Dave Winthrop (flute and saxophone) joined the group after the release of the first record and soon after Supertramp was able to earn a slot on the bill of the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival. The band membership changed as six months after the album’s release guitarist Richard Palmer left the band due to personality conflicts with Davies and Hodgson, followed shortly afterwards by drummer Robert Millar, who had suffered a nervous breakdown following a disastrous tour of Norway.

For the next album, “Indelibly Stamped,” released in June 1971 (in both the UK and US), Frank Farrell (bass) and Kevin Currie (percussion) replaced Millar and Palmer, while Roger Hodgson switched to guitar.

From this album forward, Hodgson and Davies were no longer able to use a lyricist, and Davies served as a second lead singer.

Sales failed to improve, and the record sold even less than their debut. In the aftermath, all members gradually quit except Hodgson and Davies, who began their search for new band members.

A search for members brought aboard Dougie Thomson (bass), who had done stand-in gigs with the band for almost a year before auditions resumed. In 1973, auditions restarted and introduced Bob Siebenberg (drums & percussion) and John Helliwell (saxophone, other woodwinds, occasional keyboards, backing vocals), who completed the line-up. Hodgson would also begin playing keyboards (particularly the Wurlitzer electric piano) in addition to guitar. Finally rumour has it that due to constant friction the Davies/Hodgson songwriting partnership was dissolved; though all of Super tramp’s songs would continue to be officially credited as “written by Rick Davies and Rodger Hodgson”, most of them were written by Davies or Hodgson individually.

Supertramp needed a hit record to continue working, and finally got one with “Crime of the Century.” Released in September 1974, it began the group’s run of critical and commercial successes, hitting number 4 in Britain, number 38 in the USA, and number 1 in Canada. The album underlined its ambitiousness, many of its songs were heavily orchestrated, and some even featured Davies and Hodgson singing in dialogue, such as the 1975 top 20 single “Dreamer”. the US Top 40 in May 1975, peaking at no. 35, and would be their only hit in the country for more than two years. Most of the band has said they feel they hit their artistic peak on this album, though their greatest commercial success would come later.

The band continued with “Crisis? What Crisis?” released in November 1975, which broke both the UK Top Twenty and the USA Top Fifty without even one hit single behind it. The following album, “Even in the Quietest Moments”..., released in April 1977, spawned a hit single with “Give a Little Bit”. During this period, the band eventually relocated to the United States.

The band’s switch to a more pop-oriented approach peaked with their most popular album, “Breakfast in America,” released in March 1979, which reached number 3 in the UK and number 1 in the United States and Canada and spawned four successful singles: “The Logical Song” , “Take the Long Way Home” , “Breakfast in America”, and “Goodbye Stranger”.

The run of successes was capped with 1980’s” Paris,” a 2-LP live album, in which the band stated their goal of improving on the studio versions of their songs. It included nearly every song from Crime of the Century.

Initially, it was supposed to be a show recorded in Quebec City, Canada, but A&M vetoed the idea for a “more mainstream city”.

The live version of “Dreamer” was released as a single in the U.S., where it reached no. 15, even though the studio version had failed to even chart there.

In 1982, the band released “Famous Last Words” which contained the hits “It’s Raining Again” and “My Kind of Lady”. A worldwide tour followed in 1983. After the tour, Hodgson left the band. In an interview, he stated that the reason was to spend time with his two small children. Hodgson moved his family from the Los Angeles area to the mountains of northern California where he built a home and studio and focused on his family and spiritual life, but would occasionally produce solo albums. Hodgson has stated that there were never any real personal or professional problems between him and Davies, as some people thought.

The Davies-led Supertramp soldiered on to continued success, releasing “Brother Where You Bound” in 1985. This included the Top 30 hit single “Cannonball”, along with the title track, a 16-minute exposition on Cold War themes highlighted by guitar solos from Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour. The album reached no. 20 in the UK charts and no. 21 in the US charts. 1987’s “Free as a Bird” the next album experimented in heavily synthesized music, such as “I’m Beggin’ You”, which reached number 1 on the US dance charts. The stylistic change was generally not well-received, however, and the album itself reached only no. 93 in the UK and 101 in the USA, breaking a streak of seven consecutive top 100 efforts on the American charts. After 1988’s tour, Dougie Thomson left the band over a disagreement with Davies about the use of Hodgson-penned songs during live performances and the group fragmented and eventually broke up altogether In 1996 Davies re-formed Supertramp with Helliwell, Siebenberg and Hart. The result was “Some Things Never Change,” an album that echoed the earlier Supertramp sound, released in March 1997. It reached no. 74 in the UK. In 1999 Supertramp released the live “It Was the Best of Times”, followed by “Slow Motion” in 2002 and a worldwide tour, after which the band went inactive once again.

Another attempt to bring Hodgson back into the band for a reform failed in 2005 and that was that.

MAZARRON FOOTBALL CLUB OPENING OF VIP LOUNGE Jose Rodriguez, President of Mazarron Football Club, opened the new VIP Lounge at the Estadio Municipal, Mazarron prior to yesterday’s home game against CD Algar.

Sunday’s game was sponsored by local business Healthy H2O and their guests were treated to a splendid buffet prior to the game. They were also entertained in the VIP Lounge at half time and after the game when several Mazarron players, including Diego the Club Captain, Pollo and Barrachina called in to enjoy a drink with the sponsors and other guests.

As part of a campaign to promote awareness of the football club and attract new sponsorship, Mazarron FC, in conjunction with Los Amigos de Mazarron FC, has produced a leaflet in both

The Vega Baja Garden Club The Vega Baja Garden Club held its Annual General Meeting at its October meeting. All retiring committee members were re-elected by more than 50 members attending. Val Duckworth remains leader and chairman and Andrew Duckworth secretary/treasurer. Other positions were taken by Milton Fell, Anna van Dijk, Chris Young, Ann Maidman, Gill Macpherson, Jacqueline Thomas, Ron Harris and Elaine Colebeck. Marian Donovan and June Phillips both volunteered to undertake the vacant post of Press Officer and will share the duties.

John Donovan then gave a very informative talk on growing tomatoes here in Spain; when to plant seeds or seedlings; and how to combat diseases. John said that his best ever tomatoes grown here were grown in Gro-Bags, but no one present knew where to buy these in Spain. John had brought his over from the UK. He answered specific questions from members, and following his presentation, there was a general gardening Question and Answer session, involving several of the members present.

The next meeting will be on Monday 5th November, at 1.45pm for a prompt 2pm start, at Los Rosales Restaurant on the CV895 Lemon Tree Road, Campo de Guardamar. The main speaker will be Eileen Wallace who is a qualified teacher of the One Stroke Painting Technique and holds classes for small groups at her home.

She will give a demonstration of this special technique, which is a lovely way to paint flowers and plants. She will also bring some

of her hand painted items such as candles, glassware, flowerpots etc. to sell as gifts for the Christmas season. This will be a very interesting presentation. Fundraising GOMAD

On the evening of 13th October in the new function room at Mazarron Country Club, 250 people assembled for a fund-raising evening on behalf of GoMaD (Making a difference). Two hundred and forty lucky ticket holders (sold out a month beforehand) three entertainers and seven helpers, the evening promised to be a frank success.

Barringon, singer and Master of Ceremonies, hit the evening off with a selection of Motown, 60s sound and reggae. He was followed by Hazel who rendered a Shirley Bassey tribute with a powerful voice and a great selection. Last, but in no way least, was Gerry, the voice from the valley, who rendered a striking tribute to Tom Jones.

The programme was intermittent with raffle prizes and auctions, with all monies raised to help the GoMaD charity of Mazarron. People were extremely forthcoming in buying raffle tickets and biding for the auctioned items; with a variety of seventy raffle prizes, many were lucky in obtaining a prize, be it a champagne dinner for two, a weekend in Mojaccar, or a gardening voucher (all kindly donated by different companies and people within the community). A fun time was had by all and the night was danced away until 1.00am.

On 20th October Barrington and Lea Aellen, were able to offer a cheque for €1’826 to the GoMaD treasurer, Denise Green, at the shop in Mazarron town in the presence of shop helpers. Mrs Green thanked the organisers profusely for the cheque indicating that it would help in supplying gas bottles to the needy, during the winter months.

If anyone reading this knows of someone in the community who needs help to get them through a difficult period, direct them to the GoMaD Charity who will extend a helping hand.

Every single person with low self- esteem has been criticised by others.

The concert , which is free, will take place at 7.30pm in the superb acoustics of Campoverde Church, and there will be a retiring collection in aid of church funds.

A 2ND NIGHT AT THE PROMS

On 13th October at the Lo Monte Hotel, Pilar de la Horadada, HELP Murcia Mar Menor arranged an entertaining evening with a large screen showing the last night of the PROMS, accompanied by lively dancing from The Crazy Ladies, who certainly did razzle dazzle us. Also Jim Devlin entertained us with his guitar music and singing. Then we all sang rousing songs, starting off with You’ll Never Walk Alone (Man U supporters had to put their ear plugs in) and finishing up with God Save the Queen, accompanied by much flag waving. We had a good laugh at the soprano on the screen screeching like a banshee and made comments such as ‘Don’t mention the war’ when the German conductor came on. HELP raised over €500 from the evening.

Welcome Group Update Last week The Welcome Group went on their annual trip to Benidorm.

Normally we stay for 2 nights but after several requests we decided this year to stay for 3 nights and that proved to be the right decision.

On the Tuesday the coaches took us for an outing up to the lovely village of Guadalest.

For many of the people this was their first visit to this village and a lot said they would like to go back.

The sun shone and it was lovely to sit in the village square with a coffee and admire the fantastic views.

In the evening some of the group were taken by coach up to the Benidorm Palace for the evening show.

A good night had by all was the general

feedback when they got back to the hotel.

On the Wednesday it was market day and by the look of the bags carried back to the hotel a lot of shopping was done.

Another full day on Thursday for shopping or just relaxing before the trip back home.

It is only 9 weeks before a lot of the people return to the hotel to celebrate Christmas.

Now we start to get ready for our next trip in February to Benalmadena, Mijas for the races and a day trip to Ronda.

The cheat’s way to get your five-a-day just sprinkle a powder on your cereal It will come as a huge relief for those who hate eating their greens - or simply struggle to hit the elusive target of five portions of fruit and vegetables a day.

Spanish scientists have developed a way to freeze-dry certain foods, turning them into a powder while retaining the health benefits.

The idea is that the powder is then simply sprinkled on food or added to milk or water to create a fruit juice.

Those involved with the project say it would help more people hit the five-a-

day target – and be more convenient.

The Government has heavily promoted its five a day campaign, highlighting the health benefits of getting five 80g portions.

The recommendation is based on advice from the World Health Organization, which recommends eating a minimum of 400g of fruit and vegetables a day to lower the risk of serious health problems, such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and obesity.

Lead researcher Nuria Martínez Navarrete added: ‘Grapefruit is a citrus fruit with great nutritional and functional value but its consumption is very small because, among other reasons, it is very bitter. Meanwhile, strawberries are a seasonal fruit.’

Another favourite has been dry shampoo which sees over 17,000 bottles sold every week as time-strapped Brits look for quick and easy ways to freshen up their locks.

The quick hair fix takes less than fifteen seconds to work its magic compared to the average twenty minutes time of washing and drying hair.

Despite the masses of expensive and high-tech products on offer, the poll

by Superdrug found that twelve per cent of people claimed to spend just two minutes or less looking after their skin every day.

Following the demand for speedy beauty tricks, Superdrug is introducing a range of time-saving products including giant hair doughnuts, lip stains and eyeliner appliques which glue on.

In a report by the Daily Mail, Sara Wolverson, beauty director of Superdrug, said: ‘For people that lead a busy schedule these quick fixes are the perfect opportunity to give yourself a quick pick me up without having to spent lots of time .

‘We’ve seen a massive demand for products that take no time at all. Whether it’s down to people working longer hours or people generally just spending less time on pampering themselves there is a definite trend in product that take less than ten minutes to apply.’

Neighbourhood Watch in Spain ( Vecinos Cooperando y Colabando de España ) members from Torrevieja area had a meeting with Eduardo Gil, police convenor and Policia Local chiefs to highlight the benefits that Neighbourhood Watch could bring to local communities, “many hundereds of extra pairs of eyes” to report crime to the police. Finding a hole in your sock is a distressing moment for anyone - and an American entrepreneur claims to have found an answer.

Cameron Carter, a 23 years old from Chicago who attended the US Air Force Academy, decided to take the military technology usually found in bulletproof vests, and put them into socks.

The resulting product is called ‘Socrates’, and are guaranteed to never develop holes or worn out bottoms.

Carter has turned to online site Kickstarter to fund the project, and has already almost tripled his original aim, raising $28,000 dollars.

‘Most people wear socks every day, all day, but continue

to bu y f lim s y products, said Cameron on the firm’s web site.

‘Break the cycle! Your socks should be as sophisticated as you are.’

The sock is made primarily made from fabric with built in lycra.

The Kevlar sections are carbon threaded around the toe and heel areas where wear and tear is greatest.

The firm is selling the socks online for $25 for two pairs, or $65 for three, and says they will be shipped five weeks after the Kickstarter funding closes later this month.

The product has already become a huge success, with over 700 people having signed up.

Once production has begun, the firm is also planning to expand with women’s socks and different designs.

Scientists claim to have cracked the code of every drinker’s dreams - what makes a perfect pint.

Researchers devised a formula based on factors including surroundings, music volume and the number of drinking partners.

The equation also takes into account the availability of snacks, the ambient room temperature, and the number of days until you are required back at work.

The resulting formula is: E = - (0.62T2 + 39.2W2 + 62.4P2) + (21.8T + 184.4W + 395.4P + 94.5M - 90.25V) + 50(S + F + 6.4).

E stands for enjoyment, T for temperature, W is the number of days before the drinker is back at work, P is the number of drinking companions, M is for mood, V is the volume of background music, while S and F relate to snacks and food available.

The complex formula was devised after researchers polled 1,000 volunteers from up and down the country on what conditions they preferred when drinking their pint.

Dr David Lewis, who calculated the formula at Mindlab on behalf of pub chain Taylor Walker, said: “Following all of our research we developed a formula for the perfect pint.”

Ultimate green car up for grabs

An Australian man has put what he describes as the “ultimate green car” up for sale on eBay. For the bodywork of the 1998 Mitsubishi Magna is completely covered with astro turf.

The owner, who gave his name as Tim, placed it on the auction site with a starting bid of just one Australian dollar.

But it has now garnered a number of

bids, with the price now standing at AUS$51.

Tim says he used 20sq m of AstroTurf to cover the car’s bad paint job about six months ago.

“The paint job was botchy and we needed something to cover it and someone suggested AstroTurf,” he said.

“It cost about $500 to do and a lot of work and glue went into it. We went

insane with the amount of glue and cutting we had to do but it worked out really well and everyone always smiles when they see the car.”

In his eBay advert Tim writes: “It draws more attention than a Ferrari (plus you don’t look like a douche),” he wrote.

“Since you are awesome you won’t care that it doesn’t come with rego or safety certificate, but it does come with spare astro turf.”

Police dogs sniff out 9.5 million euros in under two minutes

National Police sniffer dogs took just two minutes to find 9.5 million euros in cash hidden in a bidet, safe deposit boxes hidden in crates, and a computer printer in one of the 13 buildings raided by officers investigating the massive Chinese mafia operation which was busted earlier this week.

Houses, business premises and warehouses were overturned by the police force in the last two days on the Cobo Calleja industrial estate and elsewhere in Fuenlabrada, in Majadahonda and Villaverde (all in Madrid).

These 13 properties where the huge amounts of cash were found are just a handful of the 108 buildings raided by police since the mafia operation was uncovered.

A councillor from Fuenlabrada is one of more than 80 people arrested, who also include the ringleader, Chinese national Gao Ping.

Ping had been planning to flee Spain and return to his home country without telling his wife, a court heard today whilst remanding him in custody without bail.

Villagers shocked by teenage girl’s death in street shoot-out

A 13-year-old girl is one of two people who lost their lives last Saturday in a shocking shoot-out in a sleepy village near Albacete. Police reports indicate that one man was killed and another hospitalised with minor injuries, but that neither are any relation to the little girl.

So far, 500 officers and eight sniffer dogs have been involved in the searches, which have uncovered a total of 11.6 million euros in cash – all bar 2.1 million of which was found by the dogs.

These police dogs undergo intensive training and are able to detect even the faintest scent of coins or notes through walls or sheets of solid iron.

Many have managed to locate hidden cash where experienced criminals buried it underground or covered it with strongscented chemical agents such as perfume or bleach.

They are capable of sniffing out their quarry among up to 100,000 different scents, even extremely strong ones.

Spain’s National Police force has 450 dogs trained in eight different specialities, which include missing persons, rescue, defence, and sniffing out flammable materials, explosives, drugs, money and dead bodies.

Searches are currently underway for a 39-year-old man identified only by his initials, J.C.A., who lives in the village of El Salobral, which is a close-knit community about 15 kilometres south of Albacete city.

The tragedy happened near the parish church and all parties – including the suspect – are said to be from families who are well-known in the village.

Although the motives for the shoot-out are not known, mayor Ángel Sánchez and various residents initially thought that the accused had tried to have a ‘relationship’ with the deceased teenager, which her family did not consent to – but no concrete evidence of this has come to light.

Police cordoned off a 200-metre radius of the area, and have recommended to those living within this area to not leave their houses until they are told it is safe to do so.

Currently, the injured man, who was taken to Albacete University Hospital with a bullet-wound to the shoulder, is said to not be in any danger.

Fraudulent car theft claims rocket due to recession

Police have reported, in the last two years, a sudden upsurge in the number of fake car thefts, largely as a result of the recession In the last year alone, reports of stolen cars which turned out to be fraudulent have rocketed by 880%.

Car thefts in 2009 represented only 1.18% of total crime (1.13% in 2010) however, by the end of 2011 this had shot up to 13.5% cent of the total crime figure.

Police indicate the usual story is that the car-owner

reports the vehicle as stolen, claims the settlement from their insurance company and proceeds to sell the car on but with a different registration number and identity.

Aggravated robberies are also ‘invented as a way to ensure their policy will cover the theft. This also solves the problem of when the insurance company asks for both sets of keys to the car, since the claimant says he or she only has one since the attacker stole the spare set - the third party who sells on the car with a different

registration number does not need to reprogramme the settings or get a new key cut - highly convenient.

The rise in this particular crime came about when Police began to detect a high number of cars being bought and sold with the same characteristics to those reported as stolen.

Insurance companies say fraudulent claims have gone up by 10.5% in the last year, having detected a total of 130,959 cases across the industry – seven in 10 of which involved stolen cars.

Q. I have sold my house. I was under the impression that I was a resident and that the 3% retention for non-residents would not be applicable, but the notary said that my residence certificate was not proof of residency and that he had to treat me as a nonresident which means that 3% of the sales price was retained and paid into the tax office . How can the resident certificate not be proof of residency?

A. What the notary is saying is correct. It is a common nasty surprise at the notary lately suffered by sellers that are not getting the correct advice prior to selling . The new resident certificates without a photograph, issued by the police, do not state you are a tax resident of Spain - what it says is that you are a resident of Europe.

To be able to be treated as a tax resident of Spain at the moment of sale, you need to provide the notary with a certificate issued by the tax office in Spain stating that they consider you a tax resident of Spain. This needs to be requested in advance of going to the notary by your solicitor or yourself to avoid the 3% retention. Some notaries will also accept as proof of residency your Spanish tax returns.

If you are thinking of selling, it is important to find out from the tax office well in advance if your status is that of a resident or non resident, and the certificate issued by them needs to be taken to the notary the day of signature.

P.S. If you are a non resident, do not forget it is obligatory to file a non-resident tax returns, and that the tax man has created a task force to go after those that have not been paying (and they are sending out letters since November 2011).

Balearic property sales up by 30 per cent

According to a report on www.aplaceinthesun.com, the sale of property in the Spanish Balearic islands rose by 32.3 pert cent year-on-year in August, according to a new report.

901 property sales were made in the Balearics in August with 56 per cent of those for previously owned homes, representing a 61 per cent increase year-on-year, according to the data from The National Statistics Institute.

Nationwide, Spanish property sales increased by 3 per cent in August compared to the same month last year, reaching a total of 27,708 transactions – the first time sales have risen since February 2011. This is largely being credited to the government’s decision to cut VAT on new homes by 50 per cent until the end of the year.

Marc Pritchard, sales and marketing manager at Taylor Wimpey España, said: “Top properties in prime locations do sell at the right price, for example in Mallorca. Prices are stable on the island – it’s a resilient market with a good reputation. One thing to note is that the German market is definitely back. We have certainly seen much more interest from German buyers - probably the strongest in 10 years - on Mallorca. Last month 21 per cent of our sales came from German buyers.”

The bad governing of the four-party coalition in Mazarrón headed by the mayor Gines Campillo, is literally fast sinking Camposol, proof of this is the latest events related to the bridge joining the various sectors and that due to the neglect of this council was already partially damaged several months prior to the storms. This had already been publicly declared by the residents of Camposol at the Citizen Participation meetings and been totally ignored by the coalition government.

The “Strange and Close” relationship that exists between the four-party coalition and Masa has resulted in the return of €385,257.78 to Masa from the bank guarantees of Camposol, in exchange for NOTHING. This money should have been

used for the repair of Camposol an example being the bridge.

This comes as no surprise as various leaders of the four-party coalition were formerly employed

by Masa.

The previous PP Government made unprecedented decisiones which led to the full control of Camposol by the Council, by removing Masa – a company that had defrauded the Council - and taking judicial action against them to finance the repair and finish the development of Camposol.

The reality is that Masa owes millions of Euros to Mazarrón Council whilst the four-party coalition has GIFTED the bank guarantees of Camposol

when there are court rulings that sentence Masa to pay the council of Mazarrón millions of euros to finance the finalization of the infrastructure of the development of Camposol.

It is crazy!

The former council governed by PP handed the solution for Camposol to the four-party coalition on A SILVER PLATTER: The solution for the water, the street lighting, the sewage plant; but the lack of communication, the incompetence and the internal disagreements between the members of the coalition have destroyed years of hard work.

European Union debate due on women board quotas

EU commissioners are due to debate proposals that would force quotas for women on corporate boards.

EU Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding is in favour of the proposals to make it mandatory for companies to reserve 40% of seats for women.

But several countries, including the UK, are opposed to it.

The debate comes after the European Parliament criticised the lack of female candidates for the European Central Bank (ECB).

A parliamentary committee - in a resolution passed by 21 votes to 12, with 13 absentions - called on the European Council to withdraw the candidacy of Luxembourg’s Yves Mersch for the ECB executive board, saying his appointment would mean that the board would be all male up until 2018.

The debate on Ms Reding’s quotas plan is due in Strasbourg on Tuesday.

UK Business Secretary Vince Cable is leading a campaign against the quota proposals, backed by ministers from eight other countries.

In the UK, the percentage of women on the boards of FTSE 100 companies has risen over the past year to a record 16%, but the UK government wants the biggest listed companies to have a minimum 25% of female directors by 2015.

EU summit: France says bank deal helps eurozone fusion

The French president says a deal to start building a banking union on 1 January will enable the eurozone to speed up economic integration.

“Thanks to this we can advance more quickly and with more assurance,” Francois Hollande said in Brussels.

He was speaking after EU leaders agreed to set up a single banking supervisor for the 17-nation eurozone - a key step towards a banking union.

But Mr Hollande also said EU states “need different speeds” of integration.

“We should have a council of the eurozone to meet on a regular basis...

We need different speeds - that’s agreed by everyone now, and there are even some moving backwards,” he told a news conference.

Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel insisted again that “quality takes

precedence over speed” in setting up the banking union.

It has been agreed that the European Central Bank (ECB), as supervisor-in-chief, will have the power to intervene in any of the eurozone’s 6,000 banks.

The deal appears to be a compromise between France and Germany, who earlier disagreed over the timing and over the number of banks the ECB would oversee.

A legislative framework is to be in place by 1 January, with the supervisory body starting work later in 2013.

The timetable remains important, because only when the body is fully operational will the eurozone’s new rescue fund, the European Stability Mechanism (ESM), be able to recapitalise struggling banks directly, without adding to a country’s sovereign debt pile.

A priority is to rescue weak banks in Spain, where a recent audit put the bailout requirement at 59.3bn euros (£48.3bn; $77.4bn).

But the Greek crisis also looms large, as the EU awaits a key report from the “troika” of international lenders - the ECB, European Commission and International Monetary Fund.

Mr Hollande insisted that “Greece’s presence in the eurozone should not be questioned any more” and Mrs Merkel said the Greek government was “really making an all-out effort” to reform its economy.

Spain’s PM Rajoy gets mixed regional poll results

Nationalist parties in Spain’s Basque Country have won regional elections, an outcome expected to fuel calls for independence.

The conservative Basque Nationalist Party came top in the poll, closely followed by the Euskal Herria Bildu coalition of left-wing separatists.

In Galicia’s regional poll, the centre-right People’s Party of PM Mariano Rajoy held on to its absolute majority.

The elections are seen as a key test of the government’s austerity policy.

The Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) won 27 seats in the regional parliament, while Bildu took 21.

The opposition Socialist Party trailed in third place with 16 seats, followed by the Popular Party (PP) with 10.

The Basque elections have been described as a landmark by analysts.

Bildu was established following the Spanish government’s decision to ban the political wing of the armed separatist group Eta nearly 10 years ago.

The party represents the political ambitions of those who in the past supported Eta, although unlike its predecessor, it has publicly condemned the use of violence for political ends.

Both Bildu and PNV are expected to form a coalition, and may then push for a referendum on independence, causing a headache for the central government in Madrid, especially as the result comes weeks before elections in another Spanish region, Catalonia, where calls for a referendum on independence are also growing, press reports indicate.

PNV leader Inaki Urkullu gave little away about any coalition plans, but told a post-election rally in Bilbao: “A new era has started”.

Spain has been in economic difficulty since the 2008 global financial crisis caused a big crash in the property market, triggering huge losses at its banks. Its recession is forecast to deepen, and the country’s 17 regional governments are laden with heavy debts.

Unemployment stands at about 25% nationally, and 21% in Galicia. There have been widespread protests against public spending cuts.

This week was a tribute to Hollywood and all the couples were dancing to music from the movies. Some worked but I’m afraid that some of the pieces of music didn’t fit the dances and for me ended up with the couples being penalised for something out of their control.

Opening the show were Fern & Artem dancing to Mary Poppins and a Charleston. This was a point in question and supercalifragelistic was in no way a piece of Charleston music. Fern portrayed Mary Poppins very well, the routine was entertaining but with only 1 recognisable step from the Charleston fell way short of the mark. I gave Fern a 5 and a total of 23 came from the judges.

Next to take to the floor were Victoria and Brendan dancing a Rumba to An Officer and a Gentleman. This week Victoria showed a nice Rumba action with good floor pressure albeit she still hasn’t managed to master her solo turns yet. Also she had a wardrobe malfunction when she got caught up in the chiffon from her dress and panicked a bit!

Still much better this week and I gave her a 6 and 22 from the judges.

Next up were Michael and Natalie performing a Cha Cha Cha from the Full Monte. Sorry Michael but you have absolutely no sense of rhythm, when with Natalie she keeps him in time but otherwise its manic. I gave him a 3 (one of my bottom 3) and the

judges awarded him 19.

Following on were Gerry & Anton dancing a Quickstep to The Graduate. For me there was no improvement from last week. Her posture is still very poor, she constantly does her steps wrong and looks like there is very little effort going in from one week to the next. I gave her a 3 (another one of my bottom 3) and the judges 18.

Colin and Kristina took to the floor with an Argentine Tango from James Bond. This another point in question of the music not really fitting the dance. There weren’t enough Argentine steps in the routine, I saw only flicks which were recognisable but they did only have 10 hours training this week as Colin was in Vancouver filming for another movie so under the circumstances a job well done. I gave him a 5 and he received 26 from the judges.

Nicky & Karen then followed with a Quickstep from the Mask. Although the judges seemed to like this, I found his technique and posture still non existent. Sorry Nicky but you still haven’t found your horse from last week!

When he was dancing a chasse because of his constantly bent knees I was looking for that horse!! I gave him a 3 (another one of my bottom 3) but he got 27 from the judges.

Sid & Ola then took to the floor with a Tango from Rock of Ages. Sid showed good posture, great pivots and some good Tango steps but because he was not settled into his knees lacked the necessary staccato action of the Tango however I thought a good attempt. I awarded him a 6 but thought the judges harsh with only 17.

Next were Kimberley & Pasha with a Quickstep from Summer Stock. She showed good characterisation of the dance with a good variety of steps but for me would have been better with slightly softer knees. Her posture is not bad although some attention is needed with her right arm. I gave her a 7 and she was awarded 29 from the judges.

Next were Denise & James with a Foxtrot from Toy Story. What great characterisation this had and a super performance from Denise with good footwork and frame. I gave her a 9 but would have given her a 10 with slightly more upward lift through her upper body. The judges gave her 32 and top score

Following were Richard and Erin performing a Quickstep from 9 to 5. This was a good attempt with a reasonable frame albeit not yet tight enough and he managed to keep good body contact with Erin through most of the dance, something difficult to retain in a fast dance. I gave him a 6 with the judges 25.

Next were Dani and Vincent dancing a Foxtrot from the Wizard of Oz. This showed improvement but because her core isn’t yet pulled up enough her Foxtrot ended up being a bit ploddy and she lacked the flowing elegance of the dance. I gave her a 6 and she got 29 from the Judges.

Next were Lisa and Robin dancing a Jive from Dick Tracy. Unfortunately, although Lisa showed great energy and characterisation of the dance a lack of flicking movement through her knees and legs left this looking rather heavy for me. I gave her a 7 and the

Lewis performed this very much like the dance from the show which is in fact a Mambo and not Salsa. He gave a great performance with good hip action, steps and super lift control. He was criticised for not having enough Salsa style but this was Mambo music so who could you blame for this?? I awarded him a 10 with the judges 30.

The bottom 2 were Gerry & Anton and Michael & Natalie and with a 3 to 1 vote from the judges, Michael & Natalie narrowly survived to continue to next week. The theme for next week is Halloween so we can expect a ‘spooky’ show!

Peter says “it’s always great working with Patti but when she does Dusty and Tina she’s someone else and boy does she know how to make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck”!

The tour, a fund raising special for Help at Home (Costa Blanca), is now preparing for four other shows and ticket sales are reported to be brisk at all venues.

Autumn Offer

Famous for his TV appearance in programmes such as Most Haunted, Derek Acorah will be at Namaste Indian restaurant in Camposol, for one night only. Here is bit more information for those of you who might not be familiar with him.

Derek lives near Southport in the North West of England with his wife Gwen. They share their home with their two dogs – Jack, a Standard Poodle, and Penny, a German Shepherd Dog. Derek has always been a keen fish-keeper and is very proud of his Koi carp but recently he developed an interest in keeping chickens and ducks.

His daily routine whilst at home now includes looking after the flock he was given for his birthday in 2011.

Over the years Derek has achieved international success with his television, radio and personal appearances across the United Kingdom, Europe, the Middle East, Australia, New Zealand and the U.S.A. He has conducted telephone consultations for people all over the world. His books have been translated into many languages including Mandarin and Russian.

Derek’s first supernatural experience came as a child when the spirit of his late grandfather visited him. When young Derek told his grandmother she was not surprised as Derek was to learn that she herself was a medium. His early career was playing football with teams such as the legendary Bill Shankly’s Liverpool Football Club.

After leaving LFC he played for clubs such as Stockport, Wrexham and Glen Toran before leaving the UK shores to join the then premier Australian team USC Lion.

When Derek’s football career ended he returned to England and to his home town of Liverpool. He attempted finding a suitable niche in life but was never settled. His psychic powers were always with him and after a while he became a full time Spirit Medium based in his home city of Liverpool.

In the days when Derek was conducting one-to-one sittings, initially from a small shop

premises in the Wavertree area of Liverpool and then subsequently from his office in Liverpool City Centre, nobody dreamed that the cheerful Scouse medium would one day grace their television screens.

He does remember with affection one highlight.

In the autumn of 2004 whilst appearing live on stage at Torquay, Derek was shocked to be interrupted by the appearance of Dr. David Bull, the peoples’ favourite presenter and anchorman of “Most Haunted Live”. David was there to present Derek with the Variety Club of Great Britain Multichannel TV Personality of the Year Award.

Of course Derek has not only been involved with “Most Haunted”. In the Spring of 2003 LivingTV also commissioned IPM’s “Antiques Ghost Show” – a programme which features Derek demonstrating psychometry as he unfolds the mysteries of family heirlooms. Initially aired in the UK, this programme has gone on to receive rave reviews from wherever it has been sold in the world.

Derek’s popularity has led him to be parodied by some of the country’s foremost “names”. He was delighted at the likeness portrayed by Dawn French as “Dawnie Acorah”, whilst John Culshaw’s and Freddie Starr’s portrayal of him leaves him breathless with laugher. Derek has appeared on numerous television programmes including “Dr. Who”, “The Paul O’Grady Show”, “Harry Hill’s TV Burp”, “This Morning”, GMTV’s “Lorraine”, “Brainiac”, “The Weakest Link”, “Livin with “Lucy and many, many more. In 2011 he was invited to join a team of celebrities to take part in the “Five Go To…” series. Derek found himself based in a villa in Lanzarote where he took part in various challenges to maintain his position in the house.

He considers himself very fortunate to have been placed as runner up in the game.

SPOOKY FOOD FOR HALLOWEEN

Ingredients 100g cherry tomatoes; 150g pack mini mozzarella balls, drained; handful basil; 400g green tagliatelle; 350g jar tomato sauce; 4 tbsp fresh pesto

mETHOD Halve the cherry tomatoes and use a small, sharp knife or a teaspoon to remove the seeds. Cut the mozzarella balls in half. Place one half inside each tomato, trimming the edges if necessary to fit it in. Either cut the smallest circles you can from a basil leaf or finely chop the leaves and scrunch into small circles. Place one at the centre of each mozzarella ball.

Boil the pasta. Meanwhile, heat through the tomato sauce. When the tagliatelle is cooked, drain and stir through the pesto and any remaining basil, chopped finely. Divide between 4-6 serving bowls. Spoon over some tomato sauce, then arrange the stuffed tomato eyeballs on top.

mETHOD Heat the oil in a saucepan. Add the onion and gently cook over a medium heat for 5-6 mins until softened but not coloured. Add the garlic and cook for a further min. Stir in three-quarters of the petit pois, then pour in the stock. Bring to the boil and simmer for 1012 mins. Meanwhile, grill the bacon until crisp.

Allow to cool for a few mins, then carefully transfer to a food processor and whizz until smooth.

You might need to do this in two batches, depending on the size of your processor.

Return the soup to the pan and add the remaining petit pois.

Bring to the boil and simmer for 2 mins or until the whole peas are tender. Season to taste, then stir in the butter, if using. Break the bacon into pieces and scatter over bowls or mugs of soup. The soup can be made up to a day ahead; just grill the bacon on the day

ingredient 320g pack soft wheat tortillas; 3 tbsp vegetable oil; 50g poppy or black sesame seeds mETHOD Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Use biscuit cutters to stamp out shapes from the tortillas (we used a ghost, cat and witch’s hat). Brush all over with oil. Take half the bites and dip one side into the seeds, then spread the bites out on a baking sheet. Bake for 10-15 mins until crisp. Can be made up to 2 days ahead and stored in an airtight container.

Last week Greg and Chris were staying for a few days. We reasoned that it would be wasteful not to make use of Chris’s small nimble fingers and Greg’s large amount of muscle, so we took the opportunity to make their holiday memorable by getting them to ‘help’ us to put the winter cover on the pool.

The next day, after our visitors had left we had a dust storm. Every flat surface was covered with orange dust as though the whole world had been Tango’d, including the pool cover, which now more closely resembled a well-prepared seed bed than a recently applied cover.

I gazed at it glumly; Pete is not at all well at the moment, so the helpless female ploy couldn’t be called upon; if I wanted the dust cleaned off before the forecast rain turned it to immovable mud then I would have to ‘Do Something About It Myself’.

With grim determination, I set about it with the long-handled pool brush. I pushed the brush forward across the cover, then pulled it back, telling myself firmly that this was an ideal stretching exercise, and very good for me.

I dislodged a small ridge of dust, so I ended up with a sort of organic orange earthwork either side of the centre of the cover.

My satisfaction with my achievement was offset by the amount of dust that the pool brush, with its stiff bristles, left behind. However, it was an improvement, of sorts.

Next I took the small soft house broom, reached out with it and began to pull my mini embankment towards the edge of the cover and from there off into the gravel. By now my attitude towards gentle stretching exercises had changed somewhat, and parts of me where beginning to point out that the word ‘retired’ meant not having to work any more.

I finished, and stood back, attempting to silence the protestations of my back with the promise of a nice long soak in Radox. The soft brush had done an excellent job, and while the edges of the cover were once more bright blue, the centre, which I had only been able to reach with the pool brush, still had a generous coating of Mother Earth upon it.

A l q ueria T he A l q uerian S ystem The town hall of Alqueria is now the seat of the new Alquerian Government. Not the most imposing of buildings, plain, run-down and lurking in the Calle Horno next to the bakery. The aroma of freshly baked bread ceaselessly permeates through its halls. The familiar smell makes it a friendly building, contrary to the people who now use it as a debating chamber.

The Alquerian parliamentary model involves two elected joint presidents. One from the Hill People and the other from the Newcomers. This is necessary to stop the civil unrest which would surely follow if any one barrio gained the upper hand. A handful of ministers to handle the day-to-day running of the village completed the government. There are an equal number of ministers from each barrio. All decisions are decided by a show of hands from the villagers massed in the square. A sufficient number always turn out, not from civic duty but more from barrio rivalry. It is indeed bloody minded democracy.

To say this system is ideal would imply that politicians themselves are ideal and that would be absurd. In general if a politician is conscious he is probably lying and the Alquerian incumbents are no different. It comes as a relief when they fully immerse themselves in their corrupt activities and leave the running of the village alone.

The debate in the village square usually starts with the hurling of insults escalating to stone throwing and culminating in fistfights.

The vote doesn’t always go the way of the majority but to those left standing when the show of hands is called for. In many of the fistfights the ministers themselves have joined in. The last question resolved in this manner was the choice of design for the Alquerian national flag. At the end of the discussion the plaza resembled the ‘Valley of Death’ after the Light Brigade passed through. Littered with debris and unconscious villagers, it was a forlorn sight. Of those who remained standing a majority belonged to the Hill People. It was their flag that was adopted for Alqueria, republican colours for the field and a bottle Remitroot Liquor for the badge.

Another knotty problem which faces the new Republic and its unique form of government is the constitution. Manuela favours the ‘All men are created equal’ theme but her experience with men proves that this is not so. Poyato wants the ‘Liberté, égalité, fraternité ‘ approach. Rodriquez prefers the British model where no constitution actually exists in entirety and can therefore be manipulated by whoever is in power.

Whatever the outcome, it is a necessary step before the Alquerian passport can be issued and immigration into Alqueria encouraged.

sunset over turre Unless lucky enough to own a new or newish car; once a year the annual trek to an ITV station has to be endured. Having a hectic schedule means I have always driven up to the Lorca testing station as its open all day without appointments being needed.

My Spanish is more than passable but trying to obey the instructions to stop/go, press the brake/release the break, switch this on/off etc. whilst surrounded by the din of the other lorry and car engines was too much for me last week so the inspector took over.

Somehow he sensed I was a gringo and lo and behold the car failed as the two rear tyres were from different manufacturers. 200€ later I returned the next day and a different inspector didn’t even bother to look at my shiny new tyres and simply waved me through after politely thanking me for keeping his brother/son/fathers’ tyre shop in business.

My earlier comment that my Spanish is passable is actually questionable as the other day I was given a receipt for some work done on the central heating at home. A few days later I bought some goods from a local shop and again was given a ticket. When I got home I compared the two bits of paper and was intrigued to see that the two businesses must be one and the same as they were both called Albarán! The missus almost split her sides with laughter because Albarán is Spanish for delivery note!

Before moving from the UK in 2006 I lived in the middle of the Surrey countryside; the beautiful sounds of the dawn chorus from the wild birds would waft through a bedroom window if left open in the summer months. Here near Turre I again live in the country but instead of birdsong, the sound of many

dogs barking, growling and gnashing their teeth wafts gently across the fields of an early morning from a nearby kennels. Suddenly air conditioning seems a sensible alternative to leaving a window open.

Childhood obesity – now there is a subject. Across the western world children are getting fat through bad eating habits and a more sedentary lifestyle.

These blooming computer game consoles are a big part of the problem as youngsters sit down instead of running around like I expect we all did as kids.

So why a cereal called Krave is allowed to be sold let alone advertised on British television beggars’ belief as its slogan is ‘Chocolate for breakfast?’ The voluntary code of practice that the UK government agreed with food manufacturers is clearly working (for the manufacturers) then! I also remember tales of children turning orange from drinking that awful drink Sunny Delight made by a pharmaceutical company which only contains 15% fruit juice yet enough chemicals to dope a professional cyclist.

I have a confession to make; it has been me buying up all the local mangoes in Mercadona. For 11 months of the year the shops are normally full of hard and unripe bitter tasting excuses of mangoes from South America. Then for a few short weeks from late September the mangoes grown in the Costa Tropical in Granada hit the shelves. Gorgeous sweet ripe luscious mangoes that remind me of the ones I ate aged 10 when my grandfather bought me a little string bag full of them from India.

This year they are simply labelled as national mangoes – go on, fill your boots!

Isn’t it comforting to know that in these times of austerity there is still someone who prints more money than the United States Treasury-which by the way prints a not insubstantial amount of the folding stuff on an alarmingly regular basis. No, it’s not any Treasury that does this but Parker Brothers. Who are they?

A firm of stockbrokers? No! Maybe an Insurance Company-well, wrong again.

They are in fact the makers of Monopoly and that is just about the only thing that is making money at the moment. Scary isn’t it?

I raise this point not to depress you, rather to highlight an issue. Can we actually believe the information that Government Departments throughout the world release? Yes, the amount of Monopoly money sloshing around doesn’t really matter very much but, the comparative money available to us does. According to what we are told, there isn’t much of the stuff available.

Well, do we believe that?

Mount Everest! You may ask what that rather large natural phenomenon has to do with the first two paragaraphs? Well, when the mountain was measuredand I would love to see that tape measure! I well recall trying to measure windows at home with my wife and the trouble I got into when I kept putting the tape measure in the wrong place. How do they measure a mountain of that size?

Not too accurately it would seem. When the mountain was measured it was assumed that there should be several different measurements taken, just to be sure. Guess what…they were all different. So, the people who decide the final height-the dubious mountain height committee maybe-took an average of all the returns. It came to 29000 feet. That seemed too perfect, so they added 2 feet, just to give it a realistic feel!

MY SISTER LIVES ON THE MANTELPIECE BY ANNABEL PITCHER

This is a remarkable debut novel from a young and talented writer and is on my highly recommended list.

Picture the scene: Trafalgar Square, togetherness as a family, the epitome of happiness. Jamie, 5, feeding the pigeons and his twin sisters,10, twirling around amongst the pigeons and an abundance of laughter. When Jasmine stopped, Rose continued much to her mother’s delight. A different scene. A deafening explosion, dad screaming Rose,Rose,Rose and then a family torn apart by anger, grief and guilt.

“Police found ten bits of her body.” A terrorist bomb exploded, destroyed an innocent 10 year old and violated the remainder of her family beyond recognition. The world turned black, the future was bleak but in spite of this, Jamie narrates the story from an innocent, naïve 10 year old’s point of view. He simply cannot remember much about Rose and cannot grieve over her unlike the rest of his family. “ I don’t remember anything about the day except a big bang and lots of crying.”

He is affected indirectly by her death in terms of the devastating effect it has on his mother, father and sister Jas. “I can’t do this anymore” and mum walked out. Father took to drowning his sorrows, seeking solace in a number of bottles of vodka or umpteen cans of beer. Five years of his life have been destroyed. Jamie and Jas became invisible. “It’s like we’re dead too,” stated Jas. Neglected by those who should love and nurture them. A fresh start and the three move to the Lake District hoping to start again. The urn containing some of Rose’s ashes is a constant reminder of the tragedy and whilst it remains on the mantelpiece, in the heart of the household it will control the family and feed their guilty consciences.

Jas changes her image drastically by cutting her hair, dyeing it pink and having her nose pierced, then almost refusing to eat.

There is no denying the seriousness of the content but Jamie is a young boy into Superman, football with a sense of humour and this is the appeal of a tragic story. So instead of being constantly depressed we are uplifted with his wry humour. After the funeral he asked Jas where Rose was and she pointed at the urn. “How can a girl fit into something so small?”

Delightful. For one of his birthdays Rose had left a book for Jamie next to the urn: “I got this strong urge to laugh when I saw it there, and imagined the urn sprouting legs and arms and a head and walking to the shop to buy a present.” A gem.

The book also explores friendship, teenage love and bullying with both Jamie and his sister finding the Courage to Fly in a talent show about families sticking together.

Instead of being beaten Jamie ends on a positive note: he felt like the “luckiest, richest boy on the planet.” You will understand this feeling when you read the novel and recognise, like the phoenix, the rebirth of hope and love.

Gary stars as his team stay at deficit, but number 16’s header This week we had our Individual 38pts followed very close by the top C.F Sporting de San Fulgencio 4-1 Crevillente Deportivo “B” A comprehensive win for the Saints against the division’s bottom side ensured they remain at the summit of the league after 6 games.

San Fulgencio started as they meant to go on with a few half chances and a half-hearted penalty claim. Despite the home team’s dominance, Crevillente had a golden opportunity to open the scoring, but their number 7 could only screw the ball wide when one on one with Jovi.

Giacomo Marcello had a decent chance of his own, but he could only lash the ball over after some lovely interplay with Fernando Mora and Marco Aurelio. The opening goal was coming, and it arrived just after the twenty minute mark.

Fernando was left unmarked at the far post and he tucked it away neatly after the ball found its way through a heap of bodies in the box.

The home side continued to dominate and they would get their reward. Jose Bonmati picked out Gary Williams with a delightful cross, the midfielder only had to touch the ball into the empty net.

Aaron Lopez came close to adding a third, but his kneed effort was well kept out by the keeper. Before the end of the first half Crevillente came agonisingly close to halving the

There was a quiet period at the beginning of the second half, but that would change just before the hour. After missing a guilt-edge chance, Gary made amends moments later when he tapped in Hector Silva’s clever cross. Carl Kirby, who came on in place of Giacomo, had a few decent openings in the last minutes, but it wasn’t to be as he failed to make contact with Vicente’s cross and then hit the ball wide from a few yards out.

The visitors did eventually get their consolation goal after some poor San Fulgencio defending. Their centre-back was in the right place to knock in the rebound after Jovi had made another great save.

Another important 3 points for the Saints as their impressive start continues!

Stableford at Peraleja which was a late change of venue for us But many thanks to all of them at the course everything went very well.

The weather was very good for golf on the day but the course played very long as a lot of the tee boxes red and yellow where on the back tees which made it extra extra long for the ladies and over 70’s men. But everyone had a good time. There where some good scores on the day and the best today scores coming from two members returning from a few moths away overseas.

Joe Flanagan with 41pts and Harry O’Neill 39pts I think the handicap secretary will be taking a close look at these two gentlemen. Also Ian sadler and Martin Dykes can look forward to a little cut. Must say well done the our top lady on the day Lyn Gallard who finished on 34pts.The course on the day played where only five players had a better score on the back nine for the rest scores where well down on the back nine. Ian sadler came out on top in Division one with

Jim Millin on 37pts. In Div two Joe Flanagan on 41pts came first and Harry O’Neill second on 39pts. In the race for player of the year Roy Herbert is still out in Front on 218pts followed

This weeks match was the 2nd in the Gary Smith Challenge Trophy. The venue was the Eden canal stretch of the Rio Segura. The water level was now back to normal with a nice steady flow. A word of thanks to Carp ¨R Us, as they had dug out some of the pegs on this stretch making the pegs very comfortable to fish. However, with the torrent of water that had been flowing through here in the last week, some of the bank has been washed away. As on my peg that I had fished, before I could reach the far bank with 14.5 metres of pole, now I am a metre short!!!!. Overall, it was a slow start to the match but the weights at the end reflected a resonable day.

on the 16th October; this water has also lost many fishing pegs due to a take-over of the bamboo and reeds once again and also after the dredging many islands have now formed in the river making good fish holding spots.

This venue is not much more than a rubbish tip, this is mainly due to pleasure anglers leaving there rubbish on the banks and in the water. I think it is time that the authorities toughened up on these fishermen and started checking on their licences, I have only ever been asked to show my licence whilst match fishing and never while pleasure fishing.

RODS AND REELS League was fished at Nancy’s

MAZARRON FC 1 CD ALGAR 1

Two controversial decisions robbed Mazarron of a first victory of the season against second in the table CD Algar at the Estadio Municipal.

First, young striker Panocha was sent off shortly after Mazarron had taken the lead in the 74th minute.

Then, five minutes later, a CD Algar forward dived over the outstretched arms of Mazarron keeper Jose Iker and a penalty was awarded from which Veiga equalised.

It was 15 minutes before CD Algar managed a shot at goal and 20 minutes before Mazarron threatened with an excellent run down the right by Edu. His cross to the near post was flicked on by Jose Ruben but cleared by a defender.

Jose Iker made the first of a number of excellent saves in the 23rd minute and, at the other end, a half clearance by a CD Algar defender fell to Santi who hit a tremendous shot from 25 yards just wide of the target.

Five minutes before half time, Panocha headed wide from a free kick taken by Ruben but two minutes later CD Algar had the best chance of the half when their centre forward broke through only

to shoot wide.

Mazarron began the second half brightly with Jose Ruben breaking clear only to be foiled by the keeper’s legs but they suffered a blow in the 59th minute when the industrious Poyato, who was making a return to the Mazarron team, had to leave the field with an injury.

Chances were now few and far between but Mazarron broke the deadlock in the 74th minute when Jose Ruben was bundled over in the penalty area and duly despatched the resulting spot kick. Panocha was then sent off and a minute later a tremendous double save from Jose Iker preserved Mazarron’s lead.

LEAGUE STARTS THIS WEEKEND, ITV ORIHUELA RFC Bar, on Friday in the Pro 12 at 20.00, Dragons

Unfortunately, this weekend’s friendly against San Javier was called off, but hoping during the season the clubs will be able to organise another one between league matches.

This coming weekend is the start of the new rugby season with ITV Orihuela RFC playing at home against last years champions Murcia XV, kicking off at 17.00, so a very tough start to the new campaign.

Also on Wednesday 24 October the U16’s are entertaining Solihull school kicking off at 18.30, match report to follow next week.

It is good to see the juniors getting experience against English teams as well.

As it is the last Thursday off the month I will be down at The Steakhouse as usual between 10.30 and 13.30 with all of the rugby branded gear, looking forward to seeing you there as well.

Again this weekend we will be back televising the Pro 12 and Aviva Premiership live rugby matches at the rugby bar in Rojales, The Steakhouse, used to be Tylers

v Ulster and then on Saturday back with the Aviva Premiership, Bath v Exeter Chiefs at 15.00 followed by Gloucester v Tigers at 17.30, so come along for a full weekend of live rugby at the only designated rugby bar in the area and join the Costa Blanca Rugby Supporters Club as well.

I am at the Moncayo Market on Saturday in the morning, 09.00-13.30, with all of the rugby branded gear and club/international shirts etc, so see you all down there.

So looking forward to seeing everyone down for the first home league match of the season this weekend as well as all of the other places above.

Training is back at the Miguel Hernandez University ground at 20.15 on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at the moment for the seniors and juveniles.

The juniors start at 18.00.

So if you are interested, dig out those rugby boots and come along and see for yourself what it is like. New players are always welcome no matter what age or skill level you are.

Played at Hacienda Del Alamo stopping just in front of the Andy Lea with a score of 118 answer was “ well where do on 16th October 2012 This month’s game was a 4 ball stapleford with the best 3 scores on each hole to count.

H D A is a popular venue & always well presented. We had 48 players for this game & had a 2 tee start at 09.20.

Although a little chilly at first we had a glorious day for golf, wall to wall sunshine with just a little breeze.

Starting at the 10th tee 2 members who shall remain nameless contrived to hit amazing tee shots. Anyone who knows this course, the 10th tee has 2 wooden bridges in front, player 1 managed to hit the 1st bridge & we all stood amazed as his ball bounced several times on the bridge before rolling slowly back on the cart path

ladies tee. Not to be outdone player 2 smashed his drive into the same bridge, the ball hurtled into the adjacent rocks & from there flew backwards over the heads of the watching group into the lake behind the tee!!. After such a torrid start it is to that player’s credit he manage to score 33 points on the day.

Prizes were presented after the match in the clubhouse at HDA The results of the competitions were as follows: The guests competition was won by the team of Sharon Seed, Mark Seed, Bernie Stone & Ian Stones with a fine score of 123 points.

Runners up in the guest competition were Anne Terry, Steve Terry, Karen Lea &

points.

The members competition was won by the team of Doreen Crowhurst, Leonard Stevens, Peter Dyos & Andy Harvey with 115points OCB. Runners up in the members competition was the team of Wayne Harris, Peter Tuit, Tom Crowhurst & Colin Comber also with 115 points.

Nearest the pin prizes were: Hole 5 ‘Rocket’ Ron McKinley Hole 8 Mark Seed Hole 12 Dean Le-Ray Hole 15 Sharon Seed.

Today we played for the HENRIETTA MEMORIAL TROPHY an annual competition in memory of Alf Baggotts late wife; Alf who is a long standing valued member of our society.

We had a few call offs before the match but still 32 players had an enjoyable days golf in the sunshine. 9 MEN TORRY WIN EPIC BATTLE BUT ONLY JUST Last Sunday, Torry entertained fallen giants CD Castellon who brought with them a small band of vociferous supporters which made for a good atmosphere at the Vicente Garcia. Before the game there was only one point and 2 places separating the teams, with Torry in 10th place and Castellon in 13th place. Both sides were looking for a win to climb up the table.

Torry had a full squad to select from and welcomed back captain and defensive linchpin Jorge after his 1 match ban. Javi Rosa made his home debut at left-back.

Manu Amores was preferred to Luis Carlos, who for some reason was relegated to the bench, and Gasch was rightly preferred to Cuco Ros who has had more than enough chances to shine without doing so. The fit again Ernesto was on the bench.

There wasn’t even a place on the bench for Rafa who was sat in the stand. He can count himself extremely unlucky having been one of the better Torry performers this season.

Whether the manager really knows what he is doing is open to debate.

Torrys starting line-up: Manolo, Vicente Boix, Jorge, Abel, Javi Rosa, Burguillos (Pedro Lopez, 73’), Dani, Manu Amores (Ernesto, 67’), Gasch (Cuco Ros, 81’) and Koeman.

The rain had at least stopped when the game kicked-off in front of a crowd of around 450 which was down with the “fair weather” supporters opting to stay indoors. The pitch was heavy and it was inevitable it would cut up and be stamina sapping after all

the rain. Torry got off to the perfect start after 2 minutes with a GOALLLLL from Koeman who was first to react to a loose ball in the box after a corner wasn’t dealt with by the Castellon defence.

Torry failed to capitalise on this and it was Castellon who seized the initiative and started to dominate the midfield area and were particularly threatening down their right-hand side with Javi Rosa having a nightmare against a sprightly and tricky wide-man. Manolo had to be alert and quick off his line on a number of occasions to get to through balls before an approaching Castellon forward and also to deal with a number of dangerous crosses and high balls played into the box. After 21 minutes Javi Rosa made a good run to the near post to meet a Torry corner and headed only just over the top. After 25 minutes Javi Rosa failed to deal with the Castellon right wide-man yet again and his cross into the six yard box was prodded over line and into the net for a GOALLLLL and equaliser for Castellon. It had been coming. After 33 minutes Dani intercepted a poor pass forward from the back by a Castellon defender and played the ball out to Inarejos who accelerated to the byeline and crossed to the back post where the ball was met

by Gasch who steered the ball into the back of the net for a GOALLLLL to Torry.

This didn’t deter Castellon and they continued to probe and had the ball in the back of the Torry net just before the break but it was disallowed for offside. An early chance fell to Gasch after play resumed with his crossshot being palmed round

the post by the opposition keeper. Burguillos then had a chance from a header but put it wide. After 61 minutes a guilt edged chance for Abel when a corner was headed down by Jorge but from 5 yards out he managed to scoop the ball over the bar instead of into the back of the net. After 67 minutes Ernesto replaced Manu Amores. On 72 minutes Castellon had another goal dis-allowed. A high ball into the box was met first by one of the Castellon forwards and he headed the ball over Manolo into the net but the scorer was ruled to have been offside. After 78 minutes Ernesto was sent off for a second bookable offence after a tussle with one of their defenders when contesting a ball played forward. The pressure on Torry intensified and they defended desperately and courageously. It was like the Alamo. On 89 minutes Koeman was dismissed for a second bookable offence after a mis-timed challenge when contesting a ball played forward. Castellon threw the “kitchen sink” at Torry but somehow Torry managed to repel wave after wave of attacks and the avalanche of balls into the box to take the points and record a famous victory. Hard on Castellon not to get something out of the game but that’s football.

Torry move up to 7th in the table after this result only 1 point adrift of 4th place.

On Sunday Torry travel to Gandia and will be looking to extend their unbeaten run to 4 matches.

Wednesday 17th October at El Valle We travelled to El Valle this week for our stableford competition all 32 of us and we were met with some wonderful views of the course from the club house, the course was in fantastic condition along with some tricky greens, although the greens had been dressed they were still in very good condition, and as usual El Valle had its revenge on some of us, on hole 7 Tony Patterson had trouble getting off the tee he hit his ball straight into the pampass grass in front of the mens tee then proceeded to hit it twice more where into the pampass grass not even reaching the ladies tee at which point he decided that hole 7 was not for him, hole 18 was not a good hole for David Smith when confronted by a green side bunker, he took his shot, only for it to hit the top of the bank whereby it shot up into the air over his head and back into the bunker, there was a bit of discussion as to who had the shortest drive today this was awarded to John Symmonds on hole

16 when he took his tee shot, looking up he asked where did that go only to see the ball still at his feet, Chris Neilds had a bit of a shock waitng for him when he hit his ball into the gardens of the properties surrounding the course, he thought they were all empty but on arriving at the place where his ball had gone he found two ladies waiting with ball in hand which had landed between them as they laid sunbathing, they remarked that maybe he needed more practice, hole 15 was Paul Flannaghans hole today when his ball hit the top of the large mound in the centre of the course, it then careered back down onto his side of the fairway and he proceeded to par the hole, on hole 15 Anne Day took a liking to the pin as she actually walked back to her buggy carrying the said pin, Alan Thorpe when asked if he had any snippets to impart said no he had had an uneventful game even Ted Hooker hadn’t fallen over this week, Ronnie Speirs had much more to say when asked if he had any snippets his
