new refridgerated train system for freight

For two decades the horticultural produce of Almería has had to be transported by road or sea, because there was no refrigerated service suitable on the railway network. That is likely to change in the very near future. The rail freight terminal of Nonduermas, on the outskirts of Murcia, will be offering a new refrigerated train service, enabling companies to freight their horticultural products to Europe. The goods will, however, not travel directly to their destination; they will be transported through the port of Bilbao in a multimodal system that ships goods by train and boat to destinations in the UK, Ireland, Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Russia, Finland and the Baltic countries within two weeks. This service is the result of agreement between the company

The new service, which is provided in collaboration with the private rail freight operator Continental Rail and Grupo Fuentes, who manage the train terminal, has started with two weekly departures, although if there is sufficient demand, a daily service could be implemented. The goods are transported by rail in refrigerated containers from Murcia to Bilbao, and from the docks by boat to the main ports in northern Europe and the Baltics without the necessity to repack or even manually handle them. Two weeks ago the first train left on trial run with thirty self-contained refrigerated containers bound for the terminal at Santurce.

A Moroccan worker died at Desguaces Monteagudo-Renauto when he was run over by a forklift truck he was repairing. The dead man was named as Nadif Mohamed, a 35 year old Moroccan mechanic. The 112 services attended, but Nadif was already dead. The Policía Nacional are investigating the case. It seems that he was lying on the floor, fixing the truck when it passed right over his body, crushing his right side from knee to shoulder. An investigation is being initiated by the Instituto de Seguridad y Salud Laboral de la Región. The Director General, Tomás Pérez, says that the machine, which weighed several tons, was somehow put into motion, and passed over the body of the deceased. He added ‘it is one thing to start the engine and another action is required to get it moving.’ Three brothers of the victim and a cousin, who also work at the same company said that he had been legally employed for some time at the company, and had lived for more than 10 years in the area. His last address put him in the Camino Viejo de Monteagudo, almost adjacent to the garage. According to Tomás Pérez, so far this year nine workers have died in the region; four from heart attacks, two in accidents in the commission of their work and three ‘by physical conditions of work.’

protocols have not been affected, the overall situation is a health concern to the surgeons. As yet no operations have been suspended, though two interventions have been affected. According to the Management this was not due to the cleaners’ strike, but to a saturation situation in Resuscitation. Valoriza, the company which holds the cleaning franchise, claims that the workers just want to continue with their jobs and continue to provide a high quality service. A spokesperson for the company said that there was ‘no other way to defend ourselves.’

missing 80-year-old man found

The body of an 80 year old man, who had been missing for more than 24 hours has been found by officers of the Guardia Civil and the Policía Local of Cogollos Vega (Granada). He was reported to the Emergencias 112 Andalucía by his family as missing on Friday evening after he had gone out in the morning and had not returned. He was under medication which he had not taken for ‘nervous problems’, according to his family. After receiving an alert from the 112 services, officers of the Guardia Civil and the Policía Local of Cogollos Vega began a search, finding his body face down but with no apparent signs of violence. An autopsy is being held to ascertain the cause of death.

fuentes to be cleaned to control risk of legionella

The Fuentes in the Plaza de Colón, Óvalo de Santa Paula, the Fuente del Río (which has been out of service since the September floods) and the Rotonda de San Antonio are considered high risk areas for Legionella, and are to receive special treatment for control of legionellosis now that the high summer temperatures which assist the proliferation of bacteria have started. The Concejal de Sanidad, Antonia López explained that the sources classified as ‘high risk’ are reviewed daily for chlorine content, temperature and pH. In addition, there is a more comprehensive review on a monthly basis, and they are cleaned and disinfected quarterly, with an analysis for Legionella twice a year. ‘Medium risk’ sources are the Parque de San José, La Peñica and the Travesía de La Hoya. The remaining 47 Fuentes in the Casco Urbano and the 29 in the outskirts do

not need testing for Legionella, simply regular checkups and cleaning and disinfection. The sanitary hygienic maintenance of these facilities is contracted to a specialised company, who follow guidelines from the Concejalía de Sanidad to avoid the proliferation and spread of legionella. Preventive measures are also in place for the Municipality’s albergues (hostals) and in all schools.

infanta cristina : ‘nothing irregular about finances’

Apparently there is nothing irregular about the financial fortune that the Infanta Cristina had a decade ago. The Agencia Tributaria has forwarded all information about accounts, assets and property of the king’s daughter to the judge of the Caso Nóos, and which had been requested by the magistrado José Castro. According to these papers the princess sold 13 properties spread over all the country between 2005 and 2006. These transactions, according to the Hacienda, netted the Duquesa de Palma about 1.4 million. Shortly before the sale of these thirteen properties the Infanta and her husband, Iñaki Urdangarin, had acquired the 5.8 million Palacete de Pedralbes, which was then reformed for a further three million euros. According to the data which form part of the summary of the ‘Caso Nóos’, in 2005 La Infanta sold seven properties in Ciudad Real and Alicante, including an apartment in the capital which realised 162,000 euros. The following year, the daughter of Don Juan Carlos sold six other properties, five in Alicante and one in La Calella, Barcelona, which went for a price of 450,000 euros. With these sales and others undertaken in 2006, the joint transactions realised 1.2 million euros.

prison sentence called for by prosecutor in assault case

The prosecutor has asked for three years and six months in prison for Héctor David L., who is facing trial at the Audiencia Provincial de Murcia charged with knocking out a tooth and breaking another tooth of a man who moments before had touched a young woman on the behind. The incident occurred on the night of February 5, 2009 in a locutorio in the neighbourhood of Torreagüera. It seems that the defendant, Hassan, touched a girl’s bottom and upon being reprimanded by several people, began shouting insults to women, then punched the girl in the chest causing her to fall to the ground . A bystander came to the aid of the girl, and was punched by Hassan, upon which the accused, who was at the time the boyfriend of the girl, entered and got into a fight with Hassan. The bystander and other witnesses have not come forward.

Costa del Sol tram lent to Australian city ‘to pay off town hall debts

A tram line on the Costa del Sol has been dismantled and posted to Australia. Vélez-Málaga council spent 38 million euros on the tramway link between the town centre and the beach in 2007, but it has not been used for several years. Funding cuts imposed when the recession began to bite meant the service gradually dwindled to nothing. In a bid to reduce its ever-growing debts, Vélez-Málaga’s local government has decided to rent the tram system to another city. But not a city in Spain – the entire transport line is due to be shipped down under to be used in Sydney, Australia. The famous Opera House harbour town and the country’s second city after its capital, Canberra, already has a welldeveloped underground tube train network serving the entire metropolis. Yet authorities in the capital of New South Wales and globally-popular backpackers’ haunt consider that yet another public transport link would not go amiss.

Can’t keep a good chap down A high speed chase, a number of cars in pursuit, then bang!, hit from behind at 85 MPH, flipping over into a classic barrel roll, not once, but four times, ending up with cracked ribs and a bruised spleen. The scene: A right hander at Brands Hatch. The car: A 1965 BWM. The driver: No, not D.I. Jack Regan, from the Sweeney, but international best selling author, Peter James. Peter was racing in The Masters Pre-1966 Saloon Car Series, at Brands Hatch, and admits it was something of a close call. “I had started the race on pole, and thought I really had a chance of winning, or at least podium” Peter tells me. “Just when I felt I was in with a chance, a Lotus Cortina tried to overtake, but hit the back of my BMW, sending the car rolling over and over. I thought I was in a blender. I saw grass, sky, tarmac, tarmac, sky, gravel, sky..........Strangely I wasn’t so much shaken, but angry at the idiot who had hit me” Both Peter and his car are recovering, and hope that they will back out onto the tarmac in September, when he takes part in the “Goodwood Revival”. Peter tells me that cracked ribs hurt like hell, but his right arm and hand are in fine fettle, and will be ready to sign copies of his new Roy

Grace novel (His ninth) “Dead Man’s Time!”, published this month. As in all Roy Grace novels, it’s set in and around his home town of Brighton, and if it is anything like the previous eight novels, it will be a right good read. Had Peter ever thought about the Costa Del Sol area as a plot for a future crime novel? “Yes, it’s something I’ve thought about for some time. Marbella comes into the plot in “Dead Man’s Time” so we are getting closer, but a longer visit to get the feel of Andalucia, Costa Del Sol, and it’s people, is on the cards” Good luck at Goodwood in September Peter, We shall look forward to welcoming you to Spain.

Health & Safety!

Holiday makers Peter and Carol Kennedy, just returned home to Birmingham following a couple of weeks in Cabo Roig, have e.mailed to ask if I was aware that the dreaded welder has had a field day at the gun battery in Cabo Tinoso? Yes, sadly the H & S committee decided that it was too dangerous to allow people to wander into the workings of these big guns, so have, it would seem quite successfully, closed of all know entrances to under belly of the beasts. I last visited in January 2012, and the welds were in place then. As you are aware Peter, there are four gun forts at Cabo Tinoso, Bateria Castilltos being the most impressive. Between 1932 & 1936, the guns made their way up the twisting track to the emplacements. Two of the largest being of 38.1 calibre, manufactured by Coventry

based Vickers. The barrels are 17.6 meters long, and were able to fire armour piercing shells, some 20 miles out to sea. Records show that the guns only fired once in anger, that being in April 1937, during the Spanish Civil War. Closer to the sea, can be seen four Vickers 10.5 cm guns. On the winding road to the hilltop, can be seen the remains of the Loma Larga emplacements. This site had four Howitzers, their sights set to drop shells on any ships that came too close to the port at Cartagena. I remember Peter, as I’m sure you do, that before the dreaded welder had done his job, it was possible, with the pressure of one hand, to move the move the giant Vickers, a few inches both ways horizontally. I think it’s fair to say, the Coventry work force at Vickers, knew how to build guns. A thought for when you visit next time Peter & Carol. It is rumoured that a couple of traction engines were used to deliver all the hardware to the battery, but all trace of these engines has been lost. The team at the Cartagena Military Museum are sure they are still about, perhaps rusting in a remote olive grove, tucked away in a farmers field. Find these engines, and the good people at the Military Museum would love to hear from you, as would the Sol Times! Good hunting.

Footfall along the high streets of most villages, towns and cities, throughout Spain, can be said to be slow. Many a time, owners can be seen glancing left and right from the entrance of their shops, wondering from where and when, the next customer might appear. Once again, the Municipality of Pilar de la Horadada, along with the chamber of commerce, and the Association of Hoteliers of Pilar de la Horadada, not being prepared to sit back and hope for clients to visits the shops, presented the Pilar de la Horadada “Outlet Fayre” attracting visitors to their tented village. 26 businesses took over the Church Square for 12 hours, offering products for sale, and at the best possible prices. The good people of ASHOPI (Association of Hoteliers) provided visitors with a glass of wine and a tapa, for just one euro, as they did at the Gastronomic event in May. A modern dance exhibition by the Municipal School, delighted all wandering this delightful square, in the June sunshine. A glass of decent plonk, a little tapas, and a bargain or three to take home? rabies: first case in 35 years in spain

Spain is on red-alert as the first-ever case of rabies in dogs since 1978 has been detected. A report by ThinkSpain, the Ministry of Health insists that the risk of infection is ‘very low’, according to a report from Health Emergency and Alerts Coordination Centre in Castilla-La Mancha. According to the latter, a dog from Catalunya bit four children and an adult in various parts of the city of Toledo, and was found to

be infected with rabies. This condition affects the nervous system, is fatal and has no cure, but animals – dogs and cats – can be vaccinated against it. The health ministry says they have only ever seen very occasional cases of rabies in animals imported from Morocco and other North African countries in the Spanish-owned cities of Ceuta and Melilla on the northern Moroccan coast, despite the fact that the

regional authorities there have set up a free-of-charge and compulsory rabies vaccination scheme. A control period of six months has been declared, during which the ministry has created restriction zones – one being a 20-kilometre radius from Toledo and nearby Argés, where the dog with rabies was found; parts of the Madrid town of Aranjez; Monzón (Huesca province) and four towns in Catalunya, where the

dog came from – Banyoles, Porqueres, Montcada i Reixac, and Piera. The affected dog is said to have been in all these places. Authorities will be closely monitoring domestic pets and wild animals in the area and calling for compulsory rabies vaccinations or dogs, cats, ferrets and other mammals. Dogs are the main transmitters of rabies, which is passed on to humans and other animals via bites or deep scratches, although humans have not been found to pass it on to other people. The ministry says that where a person has been bitten by a strange animal, they should immediately wash the wound under a strong jet of water and with soap for at least five minutes, and if possible, treat afterwards with disinfectant. In the event of any possible risk, animals should be taken straight to the vet and people should go to their nearest health centre or A&E department. A vaccination can be given after the wound has been sustained and is said to be reasonably effective if administered as soon as possible after the event. For the last 35 years, Spain has been a rabies-free zone, but vaccinations are often required for obtaining pet passports meaning most vets are able to supply them.

Thousands Of ‘Eurovegas’ Job Hopefuls Queue In Alcorcón

AT least 2,000 people queue up daily in Alcorcón, just outside Madrid, to hand their CVs over in the hope of getting a job at the forthcoming Eurovegas complex. Mayor David Pérez says that although the town has not even advertised for developers to start building the complex and the first phase is not expected to be finished until at least 2017, the council has received over 12,000 CVs already, has thousands of emails waiting to be dealt with and answered, and that on a typical day people from all over Spain queue for hours outside the town hall – frequently camping overnight to ensure they get in the door to be able to present their applications. It is fairly common to see as many as 2,000 people lined up down the street, Pérez explains. But he says Alcorcón is in a unique situation because, although it has been picked by US-based tycoon Sheldon Adelson, who owns Vegas Sands, the company which runs the world-famous casino city in Las Vegas, nothing further has happened and Alcorcón remains a sleepy, land-locked commuter town. Delays have already been experienced and so even the provisional deadline of 2017 may end up being put back, says Pérez, but he stresses that this is to be expected. “It’s like building an entire new town from scratch, something which would normally take between five and six years – but we’re more or less looking at developing a seven-million-square-metre complex overnight,” Pérez told interviewers live on TV on Antena 3, Spain’s Channel 3. When asked about whether or not the anti-smoking law may, or should, be changed to allow customers to light up in the future casino complex to encourage them to visit, Pérez says 2017 is a long way off as yet, and that this is of secondary importance to the jobs that may be offered by Eurovegas. “We have to safeguard these future jobs, that’s the most pressing priority,” the mayor explained. As yet, however, no jobs have been offered.

apah fun day On Saturday 25th May, Iceland Overseas, San Javier and APAH Animal Rescue Charity organised a Charity Fun Day in the car park of the Store. APAH were chosen by the staff of Iceland Overseas as their supported Charity in 2013, and so far, the Collection Tins on the tills

and the trolley, where customers (and staff!) leave dog and cat food for the Charity, which they have purchased in the store, are helping to make a huge difference to the lives of the many dogs and cats in APAH’s care. During the event, a section of the car park outside the store had been cordoned off for a collection of classic cars, a bouncy c a s t l e , tombola, h a n d cra f ted jeweller y and craft stalls where h a n d cra f ted pewter gifts

and hand knitted dolls, hand made cards and homemade chutney were for sale, along with other handmade gifts, generously donated by supporters of APAH. There was a hog roast and a ‘Cracker Eating Challenge’ for anyone who was feeling brave enough to try eating dry crackers, without a single piece of cheese was in sight! A Children’s Cake Decorating table was also set up with cup cakes and a tempting choice of ‘icing and sprinkles’. One of the Raffle Prizes was a custom made cake, appropriately made in the shape of a dog kennel, with resident dog and cat of course. The only inedible part of the whole cat were the whiskers! There was also a dance demonstration by Totally Dance and a demonstration by a Zumba Class. Face2Face Fitness, who donated one of the fantastic Raffle Prizes, was on hand to discuss general fitness, diet and nutrition and personal training. APAH volunteers both worked on the Craft Stall and wandered around, talking to the people who came to support them and selling Raffle Tickets for a Raffle full of fantastic prizes, all donated by local companies. A spokesperson for APAH said: “The event was fantastic. It would be impossible to name all the companies who very kindly donated Raffle Prizes and gave up their Saturday to be there but we would like to thank them all on behalf of APAH, not forgetting of course all the staff at Iceland Overseas at San Javier who chose APAH as their sponsored Charity and have done an amazing job so far in helping us to keep going through very tough times. A surprise event of the day was the presenting of the Hamper from the recent Dog Show, which couldn’t be presented on the day because bad weather caused a premature end to the Show. The holder of the programme drawn had come forward, and APAH were delighted to be able to present the Hamper. 1,257.80 euros was raised at the Fun Day, which is a fantastic amount and APAH are looking forward to the opportunity to work with Iceland Overseas in organising more fund-raising events later in the year.

Baby raises funds Challenge Rosemarie! Up Crafting adds new dimention to recycling! for AECC

Newborn baby Lucy helped to raise money for AECC recently when regulars at the Irish Rover were asked to guess correctly her birth date and her birth weight. Lucy’s grandmother Vivienne, the owner of the bar, also added to the fund with a karaoke night and raffle. In total more than €200 was raised for AECC, adding to that already raised by this popular Torrevieja bar. Lucy, born 31st May and weighing in at 8.1 pounds was not available for comment but was said to be doing very well. Photograph shows Lucy in her grandmother’s arms. Also for AECC, over nine-hundred euros was raised by the Mosquitos Bar in La Florida. Bar owner Vic and Bono, an artist that regularly performs on the Costa Blanca and has a passion for raising funds for the fight against cancer, organised the event. Called “One Day in May - Artists Against Cancer”, they held a raffle and auction in addition to providing the entertainment. Maria and the Pink Ladies collected donations and sold hand-made cards produced by one of the AECC volunteers . The Artists donated their time to the cancer charity, the bar also did many other things on the day to raise the funds. As always, Maria Wilson, President of AECC in the Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa area expressed her thanks to everyone concerned with these fund-raising events

MARA a small animal rescue association based in Mula, try to help as many animals as there capacity allows. The kennels which are built on some land donated by the town hall are a work in progress with all of the building work done by volunteers. We urgently need people who would be willing to help at the kennels with feeding and cleaning and walking the dogs, or if you have any unwanted building materials or floor and wall tiles please contact Keith. Telephone number 628811188. MARA has a charity shop in Mula on Calle Boticas, we have a very large selection of books which are probably the cheapest in Spain from as little as 4 books for 1 euro. If you have any unwanted items that we could sell in our charity shop or small furniture please contact us so that we can arrange to collect them. Your support means so much and helps us to help those who for reasons unknown are unable to help them selves. For enquires regarding the shop contact Marion on 628811187. This month our dog is Rocky and young male German Shepherd who although in need of a little training would make someone a loving companion. If you are interested in Rocky or any of our other dogs please contact Keith on the telephone number above. We also have a 6 year old German Shepherd type female who desperately needs a loving for ever home.

Radio Control Mar Menor Sailing Group Radio Control Mar Menor sailing group had another great afternoons racing with our monthly points racing series. June the 14th provided an excellent sailing experience with wind strength of 10 to 12 knots giving some very exciting action. David Atherton was Officer of the Day ably assisted by Bev and Ann keeping score. The course was laid by Ernie; Ernie gave us a challenging course laid over a wide area with a great long downwind run. David ran six races three courses were over a triangle and sausages course and three races were also run over the same course but with a rabbit start Rob and Barbara took turns to be the rabbit. 9 boats turned up on the day with 2 not starting through technical reasons. The wind was from the North East and produced a nice long swell making the downwind stretch interesting. “B” rigs were the order of the day with only two boats

braving it with “A” rigs. There were quite a few lead changes on buoys making for some demanding sailing and a need to keep the water on the buoy rules in mind. We only had a few rule infringements with one 720 degree penalty turn and a couple of 360 degree penalties, we are getting better. Race results are as follows. David Lees taking first place sailing an I.O.M scoring 6 1/4 points. Robert Nichols in second place sailing an I.O.M scoring 6 ¾ point. Nigel Lane in third place sailing an I.O.M. scoring 15 points. The shadows on the Pictures of the three winners, is a photo technique employed for reads of a nervous disposition!! We have now had a Gold cup added to our monthly racing kindly donated by David Atherton to be passed on to the winner each month. Our next monthly points meeting will be Friday the 12th July racing starting from 3pm and as usual run from Infanta Cristina Sports College Los Alcázares. Any boat owners who would like to join in are very welcome please contact David Lees on Tell 968 170 870 or e-mail rcsailingroup@gmail. com we are always looking for new members.

Hospital Visiting HELP HELP Murcia Mar Menor offers a visiting service twice a week for English speaking foreigners in Spanish local hospitals, mainly Los Arcos. Although Spanish hospitals provide translators for visits with consultants, it is not possible for these translators to be at a patient’s bedside other than by appointment. Understandably most of the nurses and carers are Spanish speakers and this is why HELP MMM set up their visiting service to give the foreign patient a little bit of relief from their daily language barrier and speak to them in their own language. A friendly chat can ease concerns. HELP MMM has a good relationship with the Social Work department in Los Arcos and the managing director. As a charity we have been given permission to make these visits. However, all volunteers need to carry a certificate with them, signed by the director, and to show their HELP badge when asked for identification. Before visiting the wards, hospital visitors make themselves known at the nurse’s desk and enquire about the room numbers of English speaking patients. Do You Want to Help? To be a volunteer for hospital visiting, there is a protocol to be followed:A visiting team exists of 2 persons, and volunteers never ask for information about the patient’s illness, they just listen but never speak about their own personal experiences or problems. A volunteer can advise about making contact with the hospital social worker for further treatment elsewhere or aftercare at home. If the patient is interested, HELP MMM can offer English magazines, or the loan of English books and “Talking Books”. They can also offer the loan of mobility equipment or give advice about other charities in specific areas, e.g. cancer. The visits are no longer than 10-15 minutes. When the patient is asleep during the visiting period, the visitors will not wake them but will leave a note mentioning that HELP MMM has been there to visit but that they will return later that week or the next week. If you would be interested in becoming a hospital visitor, do please contact the office on Tel: 968 570 059 The photo shows Thelma, our hospital visiting coordinator.

World Day of the Sun

Sun Care Advice at the Casa de la Cultura ON 21st JUNE 2013 at 20.00 Louise Stone, Store Director of Specsavers Opticas in Calpe together with Optometrist Cecilia Navarro Tudela, will present a one hour talk about the positive and negative effects of the sun and how to make the most of the sun safely. This event, to mark World Day of the Sun, will take place in the Casa de la Cultura in Calpe and is free to attend. It will cover the benefits which exposure to the sun can cause, such as healthy levels of Vitamin D, but also look at the negative elements such as skin cancer and how to protect yourself. The main focus, however, will be on the subject of how the sun can damage your eyes. Louise explains “I look forward to sharing information and advice about enjoying the sun safely with Calpe residents. What many people do not know is that excessive exposure to UV rays causes a painful irritation to the cornea at the front of the eye. In extreme circumstances this can cause permanent damage to the

cornea, age related macular degeneration, cataracts and even blindness. I hope this seminar can help local people to protect themselves against the harmful effects of the sun and enjoy a great summer!” As well as protecting your skin with high factor sun protection, a hat and light clothing, it is recommended that everyone should wear sunglasses to protect their eyes from the sun. Check sunglasses comply with UNEEN 1836:2006 + A1:2008 or bear the CE kite mark and are marked UV 400 and select styles which are large, or wraparound to minimise light entering the eyes from the side. No need to book your place, please just come to the Casa de la Cultura at 20.00 on 21st June. To find out more about the event please call Specsavers Calpe on 965 835 367. Specsavers Opticas Calpe is offering a free UV protection test for sunglasses. Take your glasses to Avda de los Ejércitos Españoles 6 to make sure your eyes are protected.

Lions Golf in aid of ALPE The Torrevieja Costa Lions Club in association with Costa Blanca Green Fees Services organised and ran an excellent Golf Tournament at Vistabella Golf Course on Saturday to raise funds for ALPE, the educational centre for disabled children and young adults in Torrevieja. A total of 53 keen golfers turned out all bright and shiny for the 0830 shotgun start before the heat of the day set in. Around 1330 all had returned to the Clubhouse where a barbecue had been prepared and refreshing drinks were consumed by all participants, at the Vistabella Restaurant. Whilst the scores were being collated the golfers were entertained by Ian Gibson with his distinctive Yorkshire humour. An auction of green fees by Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fees ensued which boosted the Lions funds for ALPE considerably. With some donations still to come in the funds raised on the day

reached 977.00 euros which will be presented to ALPE in September when they return from their Summer break. On what turned out to be a hot day at Vistabella many of the golfers were rewarded for their efforts with excellent trophies and prizes. Overall winner was Vic Smith who won the winners trophy and a 100.00 euro travel voucher donated by Comaskey Properties. 2nd Doug Sheeren, Trophy and 100.00euro voucher donated by Specsavers Torrevieja 3rd Tony White, Trophy and green fees voucher donated by Vistabella Golf Best Lady Hilda Scott, Trophy and embroidered Polo shirt donated by Kameeleon. Various other minor awards were presented by the Lion President including one to a golfer who had a wardrobe malfunction on the course, to protect the

innocent we will just call him Dave. The Lions thank the sponsors Costa Blanca Green Fees, Vistabella Golf, Comaskey Properties, Specsavers Torrevieja, TV Choice Magazine, Kameeleon, Asador Don Marino, Mick the Grip, Restaurante Lo Marabu and of course all those who took part on the day. The Lions hope to do it all again next year. Photo L-R Vic Smith, Hilda Scott, Doug Sheeren, Tony White, Lion President Janette Bennett.

Crackdown on e-cigarettes

Electronic cigarettes are to be regulated as medicines, the UK’s drugs watchdog announced this week. Although some countries have banned them, e-cigarettes can at present be bought without restriction in the UK. From 2016 they will have to be licensed as nicotine-containing products. But they will still be available over the counter, similar to how paracetamol and aspirin are sold. GPs will be able to prescribe them – in the same way nicotine gum and patches are – as an aid to quitting smoking. Around 1.3million Britons use battery-powered e-cigarettes, which turn nicotine into vapour to be inhaled, avoiding the harm caused by tobacco

smoke. But the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) decided they must be regulated to make them ‘safer and more effective’. Its research found nicotine levels delivered often differed from the amount stated on the label and varied from batch to batch. Other studies have suggested that some ecigarettes contain potentially harmful contaminants, the MHRA said, and there were anecdotal reports of a user suffering facial burns after one exploded. Although using e-cigarettes is safer than smoking tobacco ‘the long-term safety of these components to the consumer remains unknown’, it said.

Week of the school book exchange

Now the end of this school year is near people are tending to store their old books instead of making the best of it by swapping these books for the ones they need next year. In that way people can save themself a lot of money! In the week 24 – 28 June you can deposit your books at Calle 19 Abril, 40 in San Miguel de Salinas, between 18.00 and 20.00 hrs, the home base of Tus Libros Valen Dinero. Your books are then offered for sale at to other students from schools in the Veja Baja. At the same time you can order the books you need for your next school year. A fair chance that some older students just brought in the books you need. In case your ‘old’ books are sold and the ones you need are there, you can save yourself as much as €350, because you don’t need to buy complete new books. The exchange of books is not only for primary and secondary school books, but also for all the novels (Spanish, Valencianes, English and French) you have used.

It could be that you still need to do reexams at the end of the summer. Don’t worry there is a second exchange week scheduled in the week from 9 – 13 September. Besides that we are open during the summer months every Tuesday and Thursday between 18.00 – 20.00 hours. You can also call us to make an appointment. But remember those who brings in his books first will be served first. For further information: www.tuslibrosvalendinero.es

20th Anniversary Celebration

On a very hot evening of Thursday 13th June Rascals did the last performance of their spring/summer show” I remember it well” at the Virgen del Carmen Casa de Cultura Torrevieja. The show received a standing ovation and kind words from Graham Knight who praised Rascals for all their fund raising during their 20 years in existence. He said he has watched the shows grow from strength to strength and sees improvement every year. He commented that Rascals did a lot of other things for the community helping where they can and spoke about the Xmas party they gave to ALPE which was the highlight of their year and mentioned that they are the only non Spanish group to take part in the Carnival in Torrevieja which helps a lot with integration. Two counselors came up on the stage to present a salt boat to the group for their achievements. The following evening Rascals celebrated their 20th Anniversary by having a party at Catorce restaurant in Benijofar where they

were entertained by Darren Jones. At each show a cake was raffled to raise funds, Rascals were not allowed to buy tickets so Chairman Jill Rule paid to have one made by Jane Atkinson so that everyone could have a piece of one of these delicious cakes. John Aldrin (chairman from 1999 to 2005) was over from the U.K. with his wife Sheila. He was delighted to see that Rascals was carrying on the tradition of raising money for charity, caring for each other and helping where they can in the community. He was impressed that 125,000 Euros had now been donated to various charities, most of this has been raised since 2004 when they performed in the theater for the first time, previously shows were performed in local squares and a bucket collection done to raise money for charity. New members will be welcome, rehearsals start in September for the winter variety show. To find out more about Rascals look on the website www.therascals.info or call Jill on 96 672 7282.

Mini-heatwave to give way to rain next week

Boy of seven drowns in communal pool after being ducked by friends

British Bedding

COMPLETE HOLIDAY CARE

Temperatures soared all over Spain last weekend, but are expected to drop again later in the week as rain sweeps across the mainland. A depression coming in via the north-western region of Galicia will bring generalised showers and a fall of between 6ºC and 10ºC, lasting until at least Thursday, says the State meteorological agency, AEMET. Sunday was reportedly hotter than average for the time of year, with temperatures in the shade ranging from 35ºC to 38ºC in Andalucía, Murcia, Extremadura and the south of the Comunidad Valenciana, and around the 30ºC mark elsewhere in the country with the exception of the north coast, where thunder storms were forecast. Rain and thunder are expected to hit the rest of

Spain by mid-week. The cooler and wet climate is not expected to pass until Thursday, but once the official first day of summer arrives – the season change being due at exactly 05.04hrs on Friday, June 21 – the mercury will soar once again and the weather will be consistent for the time of year, meaning that inland in the south the temperature will shoot up to the high 30s and in the low to mid 30s on the south and east coast and in the Balearic Islands. AEMET says the weather data it has to hand at present points to Spain having a ‘normal’ summer, with intense heat and little or no rainfall, despite fears earlier this month that the season would be considerably colder than usual.

A seven-year-old boy has died, in the northern region of Aragón, after he and a group of friends were playing at ducking each other in the swimming pool on their residential complex. He was taken into the paediatric intensive care unit in Zaragoza hospital on Thursday in a critical condition after he stopped breathing and his heart failed. Paramedics who rushed to the scene managed to revive him, but a few hours after he was admitted, doctors broke the news to the parents that the child was already brain-dead due to the prolonged period of lack of oxygen and circulation. He had spent several minutes with no heartbeat and not breathing before ambulance staff were able to revive him. Police investigations found that although the parents were very nearby and were keeping constant watch over their children in the pool, they did not realise what had happened until they saw one of them pulling an unconscious youngster out of the water. Regional law in Aragón states that a lifeguard on duty in communal pools is not compulsory for those which are less than 240 square metres in size and 1.6 metres (5’3”) deep.

Q: I have a mortgage variable mortgage with BBVA with a minimum interest clause in my mortgage of 3.5% What do I have to do to have the minimum interest clause removed so that I can take advantage of the all time low interest rates?

A . Nothing. The BBVA bank in result of the sentence by our supreme court dated 09/05/2013 has decided to remove all clauses of minimum interest and apply the differential above the euribor with no consideration to the minimum clause. In practice this will mean that if you have have a variable mortgage of for example euribor + 1%, which is average, you will now pay aprox. 1.5% interest instead of 3.5%, which is the minimum interest clause that they introduced into your mortage document. They will remove all minimum interest clauses with effect from the 9th of May. Position of other banks since the sentence: Cajamar: The same position as BBVA. NCG Banco: The same as BBVA. Banco Popular(Banco de Andalucia):In principle they say that they will not be removing the clause. Banc Sabadell: The same as Banco Popular. Kutxabank: The same as Banco Popular. Bankinter : They are not affected as they claim they have never introduced this clause in their mortgages. Santander: The same as Bankinter. I recommend taking a look at your mortgage. If the clause is included and the bank does not remove it automatically, speak to your bank manager about it being removed.

Charity Golf Match

HELP VEGA BAJA - FRIENDSHIP CENTRE

On Monday 10th June, one of the founder leaders retired from supervising the Friendship Centre, which is supported by the charity HELP Vega Baja. It was in March 2004, that under the instigation of June Sanders (wife of the then Help President) that a group of volunteers would establish somewhere for housebound people and their carers, to meet in a safe and friendly environment. After being a manager and team leader of a care home run by the Church of Scotland, Beth Finlayson, was an obvious candidate to oversee the meetings. Beth had a nursing background and had worked with the Scottish Blood Transfusion Service and also included 25 years experience of caring for the elderly and Alzheimer sufferers; all this expertise was to prove invaluable with the Friendship Centre. The meetings where run from the Baker Centre, Playa Flamenca on Monday afternoons and proved a welcome respite for the housebound and their carers. With options for the guests to play games or just talk, many of the volunteers joined them and made sure each person was comfortable and well looked after. Afternoon tea was provided and over the years a raffle included, with the proceeds going towards an annual coach trip, to a variety of places, even with wheelchairs and ‘drivers’ being on hand. The location for the meetings changed in September 2012 and moved just a short distance to the tea-room of the Church La Parroquia Cristo in La Regia.

During the afternoon tea, Beth was presented with a cake and bouquet of flowers, in appreciation of all her hard work. Beth has left this well run, friendly and caring club, to another volunteer who has been assisting since the group’s inauguration, Trish Felvus, so the continuity will continue. At the end of her final afternoon of being in charge, Beth informed all present that she had arranged this year’s coach trip and it was to include lunch at the popular Monro’s in Pedreguer and also stopping on the return journey at Villajoyosa, for a spot of ‘sea-air’. The Friendship Group will resume after the summer break on Monday 9th September, 2013. If you or someone you know would like to join us, WHY NOT COME ALONG to “the Help Friendship Centre” between 2pm and 5pm at the Church La Parroquia Cristo in La Regia. For more details call our San Miguel office on 966 723 733, Monday to Fridays between 10:00 and 13:30.

SOLTIMES JUNE 2013

Reader Comment: Illegal building continues in Albox

A British couple have taken their neighbour to court for spitefully cutting their water pipes and stealing their taps. The neighbour, who owns a cafe/bar, ordered his staff to cut the water pipes and remove the taps when he found out that he was being fined for building illegally. These pipes and taps are the main supply of water the couple have. He has also sent staff to intimidate and threaten the couple who have been trying to get the local police and Albox Town Hall to do something about the illegal building and the illegal outdoor music that the cafe/bar owners - who have a license for a cafe/bar WITHOUT music - have been having over the last 3 years. The illegal building carried out by this bar owner, and the authorities inconsistent way of dealing with it, is the disturbing undercurrent to this case. The bar owners, a local family, finished massively extending their business premises 3 years ago without proper licenses. They are using these extensions, including an overhanging terrace, for business without licenses and we presume without public indemnity insurance which would need building licenses to be in place. The Junta de Andalucia has ignored this illegal building by passing responsibility to the Diputacion of Almeria. The Diputacion has said they can’t do anything about it as it is the responsibility of Albox Town Hall, and Albox Town Hall quickly pushed through the application to legalise the buildings over the Christmas holidays in 2012, even though the buildings contravene several building laws. All this has happened within the last 4 years under the nose of the same authorities who have been compounding the plight of thousands of British who unwittingly bought illegal houses in the area. If it’s so easy to legalise buildings why doesn’t Albox Town Hall do this for non locals as well? In contrast, the bar owners were fully aware when they commissioned the build 4 years ago that it was without the proper licenses. In fact the owner laughingly said to the couple years ago when he was building yet another illegal house, that he’d “prefer to pay the fines as that was cheaper than getting the proper licenses”. It would seem, that as long as you’re local, you can do pretty much what you like and be supported by the authorities. The fine he has had to pay is indeed a lot

less than the tax payable if he’d done it legally.>> The couple are waiting to hear the outcome of the court case which could take a few weeks, although they don’t hold out much hope of the court finding in their favour. The bar owner’s lawyer presented all sorts of ‘statutes’ supposedly proving that they’re allowed to cut water pipes. But considering the President of the water society lied in court about his connections with the bar owner - he said he had no connection to him even though they are in fact brother in laws - how can any statutes be relied upon to be true? The couple have spoken to many others in the area who are members of this water society, including an ex committee member, all have said that the President, nor other members, have the right to do what they’ve done. When trying to get proof of their legal rights to another well in the area, the book the couple signed has been mysteriously impossible to get hold of, the rumours are that the President/ brother in law has it. Incidentally, after a mix-up over swapping timings of the couples’ fill a few years ago they bought water from the owner of the bar for 3 1/2 years. He denied this in court. As I write this article the bar owner is adding a third floor to his house - what’s the chance that this has building permission? At the same time AUAN are spending thousands taking one case to European court to try to highlight the problem that thousands of British have with illegally built houses in the area, where’s the justice in that? The bar owner is threatening to sack his staff due to lack of business/work and blaming it on the couple so inciting hatred against them - whilst spending thousands extending his already palacial house. Some say that ‘this is just the way things are here’, I say that with this sort of thinking we would still be living in caves - no offence intended to those who live in cave houses! We wait to find out what the court will make of this case, lets hope they come down on the side of common decency and justice. By Christy Cappelman

SOLTIMES JUNE 2013

One car in every five fails ‘ITV’ Nearly one in five cars failed their ITV, or compulsory annual technical revision test in 2012, according to the public sector firm which covers inspection franchises all over Spain. Safety defects – such as brakes, lights and tyres – not being up to a minimum standard, or emissions being too high in certain federal communities in Spain where regional law stipulates a maximum. A total of 5.93 million cases of serious safety faults were found during ITV testing, and 900,000 were rectified afterwards so the vehicles would go on to pass the examination. The actual percentage of cars which failed is 18.5, or just under a fifth. Although the number of failures was 0.8 per cent lower in 2012 than in 2011, the amount of dangerous defects found was 4.5 per cent higher. Inspectors say the most common problem was lights and indicators, accounting for 23.8 per cent, followed by tyres, wheels, the wheel axis or suspension – 21.4 per cent, or 3.2 per cent higher than in 2011 – and brakes, being 15.7 per cent of serious faults found. Nearly 12.3 million cars had minor faults which prevented them from passing the test, relating to lights and indicators (35.9 per cent), engines and transmission (18.9 per cent), the general condition of the car externally, bodywork, and chassis (16.5 per cent) and brakes (12.7 per cent).

The rise in the number of technical problems with cars found is thought to be partly due to the ongoing financial crisis, whereby vehicle-owners cannot afford basic repairs or services, and partly due to the new digital ITICI scheme run by the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) in conjunction with regional governments so that the traffic authorities can tell in an instant whether or not vehicles have a valid ITV. Information generated from the car itself while it is on the hoist at the ITV station is automatically picked up by the attached computer and sent in real time to the DGT, a new system in place to cut down on the proliferation of fake ITV stickers and pass sheets being sold on the black market. According to the DGT, if just 20 per cent of cars which were not put through their ITV and should have been had in fact been tested, a total of 7,100 road traffic accidents, 7,000 injuries and 110 deaths could have been avoided. Cars up to four years old do not normally need an ITV unless they are exhire cars, and the first ITV notice will be sent by ordinary post to the registered owner. At four years old and over, they are tested every two years, and at 10 years old and over they are tested annually. Vehicles must show a current ITV sticker in their windscreens which show the month and year when the next one is due.

It’s all about the Music…

Today’s iPod models and iOS devices can play music, audiobooks, podcasts, videos, and even display your photo collection and run applications. However, despite all of these different types of content and features, the core focus remains on music, and most iPod and iPhone owners will be concerned first and foremost with getting their existing music collection onto their device. One of the common myths about the iPod is that you have to buy your music from the iTunes Store. In reality, nothing could be further from the truth. iTunes can easily import content from commercial or selfcreated audio CDs, or any standard MP3 file that you may have available. Purchasing content from the iTunes Store is far from the only option, and there are many iPod and iTunes users with large music collections who have never purchased even a single track from the iTunes Store. Further, as more online digital music stores begin adopting open DRM-free standards, you have many other choices for where to

purchase music, even for online download. However, since most people who buy an iPod probably already own at least some music on compact disc (CD), this is usually a good place to start. iTunes provides built-in features for loading your CDs into directly into your music library, and if you have an Internet connection it can even look up track information for most commercial CDs and fill it for you automatically, ensuring that any tracks you import are properly labelled. (There are many options for obtaining legal FREE music - just contact apps@ apptienda.eu and we’ll send you our list of site links.) In fact, the only real limitation with regards to iTunes’ support for digital music formats is the Windows Media Audio (WMA) format. Neither iTunes nor any of Apple’s media devices natively support this format, although iTunes will helpfully offer to convert any unprotected WMA files that you ask it to import. Unfortunately, if you have purchased files in the Windows Media Audio (WMA) format from other online music services, iTunes will not be able to convert these directly due to the Digital Rights Management (DRM) restrictions on these files. If your DRM license permits, you can burn these to an audio CD using another compatible media application and then import that audio CD into iTunes as you would for any commercial audio CD. It’s also worth noting that WMA conversion is only available if you’re using iTunes on Windows, since Mac OS X doesn’t include the necessarily Microsoft Windows Media Player libraries to handle the conversion. That’s the geeky bit - next time we’ll run you through actually getting your music up there! Till then...

Over six in 10 homes in Spain were purchased without a mortgage in the first quarter of this month, suggesting that the housing market is far from on its knees and not everyone has been hit by the recession.

In a report by ThinkSpain, according to the General Council of Notaries, a total of 60.8 per cent of buyers dispensed with mortgage-lenders when buying properties between January and March inclusive. But not all of these were bought outright in cash – many purchasers bypassed the banks by taking out loans directly from the developer in the case of new builds or properties that have never had an owner, or took advantage of the ‘rent-to-buy’ scheme which many developers are now offering in a bid to get shot of their plethora of empty homes. This way, they manage to avoid problems with trying to get finance from banks which are reluctant to lend money in the current economic climate, and do not have to worry about these

entities repossessing their homes if they lose their jobs and cannot find work in time to save themselves from defaulting on their monthly repayments.

According to the judicial council, nearly 44,000 properties were repossessed last year alone. This is almost one home per thousand residents in Spain, or around 20 to 30 in the average-sized market town, five or 10 in a large village or roughly 100 in a small city. And banks are no longer offering 100-per-cent loans unless the property purchased is one of their own which has been previously repossessed – despite the fact that the plummeting Euribor, or Eurozone interest rate, means mortgages are now cheaper than ever. Commissions are also higher and many future mortgage customers are obliged to take out multiple insurance policies, including life and redundancy cover, and even pension plans with the

lender.

But the EU’s recent verdict which found ‘minimum interest rate’ clauses illegal means more homeowners will now be able to benefit from the historically-low Euribor, which stands at 0.5 per cent. Until now, many banks set clauses in mortgage contracts which put a minimum interest rate on repayments of an average of 2.0 to 3.12 per cent, meaning even if the Euribor dropped below this figure, they would not benefit from cheaper monthly quotas – but no upper limit was placed on these payments, so if the Euribor went up to 15 per cent, this is the rate mortgageholders would face. Banks which have been pulled up over ‘minimum rate’ clauses, including the BBVA and Cajamar, have agreed to drop these, but few have done so retroactively which mean no refund is likely to be due. On the flip side, however, affected homeowners will now see their monthly repayments plunge to new lows.

The luggage that’s impossible to lose

Losing your luggage on a flight could soon be a thing of the past after an airline developed a bag that is impossible to lose. According to a report by Mail Online, aircraft maker Airbus has helped develop technology which could eliminate the problem of missing baggage, a problem that costs the aviation industry nearly £2 billion a year. According to the latest industry figures, about four pieces of luggage will be lost on the average Boeing 747 flight. Passengers are most likely to lose a bag when changing flights - especially if the connection time is short. One of the major reasons for luggage being lost is when the paper tags carrying the bar code are ripped off as cases are shunted along conveyor belts to the aircraft. It was this which led to the loss of thousands of bags by

British Airways following the chaotic opening of Heathrow’s Terminal 5 in March 2008. The prototype luggage technology, known as Bag2Go, involves embedding a satellite tracker and bar code display on to the suitcase. Using a smartphone, a passenger sends details of their flight to the airline which in turn sends back a bar code which is shown on the display unit of the case. Each bar code is unique carrying details of the traveller, flight and destination. Once on board a plane, a passenger can use a smartphone app to check that their bag is in the hold and alert flight crew if it’s not there. Should the bag be loaded on to the wrong aircraft, the combination of satellite

technology and the bar code means that it will be easily traced. It will enable the case to be re-routed to the correct destination enabling the luggage to be returned to its rightful owner. At the same time, the passenger can keep track of the bag with the help of a mobile phone application. The app has a number of functions, including alerting a passenger if somebody tries to tamper with the bag. The technology is still being developed by Airbus, T-Systems - a telecommunications company and RIMOWA, a suitcase manufacturer. Passengers will be able to buy the bags, although renting them is another possibility being considered. The advanced technology means that there may be no luggage carousels in our future at all, as the satellite technology could mean bags are transported independently and directly from your house, to the airplane’s hold, and finally to your hotel.

SOLTIMES JUNE 2013

Torrevieja U3A

A busy month of activities culminated in a trip by some intrepid members of the Torrevieja U3A to Cieza to go white water rafting. Having donned their life-vests and helmets and met their guides for the morning, 50 of us had a thrilling and exciting ride down the rapids in the River Seguro. On reaching the weir, where the rapids are a bit too strong for inexperienced rafters, the

group were offered the opportunity to slide down without the rafts; an option taken up by the more fearless of amongst us. Chivalrous behaviour went out of the window as the boats attempted to make sure they soaked everyone else without getting wet themselves! Needless to say we were all rather damp at the end of the morning but everyone agreed that a great time had been had by all. Plans are already afoot to repeat the adventure next year. After our strenuous morning, a leisurely and sumptuous lunch was enjoyed by all of us before catching our coach home to Torrevieja. The trip followed on from a superb monthly meeting at the end of May, when the members were thoroughly entertained once again by Vivien Heyward, who brought along her extensive collection of antiquarian clothing. Models from amongst the members showed off some of the delightful clothes and hats that Vivien had brought along. With some brave volunteers from amongst our members, we were shown the intricacies, shortcomings, and complications of dressing in fashionable clothes in the Victorian era. We heard some interesting, if not very delicate,

secrets of the methods of visiting the loo without having to get totally undressed, and were told about the vast differences in costs of clothing between the gentry and serving classes. One of our volunteers was dressed on stage from her undergarments, through petticoats, a bustle, more petticoats, modesty lace, skirt, jacket, false ringlets, hat, and finally a walking parasol before she was finally able to parade around the hall. It certainly made everyone realise just how totally impossible getting dressed and undressed would have been without a helper! We were also very pleased to welcome Bob and Sandra Welham to our meeting. Bob is President of the Vall del Pop U3A and Val is their Travel Coordinator. They travelled down to us from the Jalon valley to meet us all and experience first-hand the Victorian Fashion Show. Vivien’s extremely interesting talk was a wonderful way to bring our formal meetings to a close for the summer holidays. We will continue to have informal meetings on the last Monday of the month during the summer period (24th June, 29th July and 26th August) at the C.M.O. building in Torrevieja (near Carrefour)

27

and you are welcome to come along and join us for a coffee or cold drink to escape the heat of the summer sun. Our members also meet during the summer for informal beach parties and these will be held on 18th July, 22nd August and 19th September – if you would like to come along please see our website for the venue. Normal meetings will resume in September with our Groups Fair, where you can come and find out about the various interest groups that we offer to our members. Full information about Torrevieja U3A, including access to our latest News Bulletin and what’s on, can be found on our website www. torreviejau3a.org or by contacting a member of the Committee. We look forward to welcoming all members – current and future – to an event over the summer. We hope everyone who has returned to cooler climes a fantastic summer and we look forward to welcoming you all back in the Autumn, ready for a new round of interesting activities

Mayor Congratulates Spangles on Second Gold Medal

The Mayor of Los Alcázares, Anastasio Bastida, presented the ladies of Spangles Harmony Chorus with the gold medal that they won at the Convention of the Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers, which took place in Benalmádena on 13 April. Spangles performed a concert last Wednesday at the Salon de Plenos of the Ayuntamiento of Los Alcázares, where the mayor gave out the medals and remarked that he had never kissed so many ladies at

one time. This is the second gold medal won by the chorus, celebrating another year as Champions of Spain and Portugal. Their Musical Director, Gail Grainger, remarked “The chorus has worked very hard over the last 12 months to ensure that we brought the gold back to Los Alcázares and we are very proud to do so for the second time”. Chorus members are now busy raising funds so that Spangles can represent Spain overseas. Various events have been

arranged, so please check their Facebook page or their website for full information. Spangles was formed in December 2004 by Anthea Prentice and Lyn Baines, with only five women. Today, the choir has grown to over 40 members who rehearse every Thursday in the Las Claras Municipal Centre. Spangles welcomes new members so, if you’re looking to make new friends and enjoy singing, why not visit them at rehearsal? They meet every Thursday from

10.30am to 1.00pm. Following on from their first gold medal success; Spangles released a CD called ‘Pure Gold’, which includes many audience favourites. ‘Pure Gold’ is on sale at 5 Euros and makes an ideal gift. Call 968 432 525 or 968 334 527 to order your copy. Please call Lyn on 968 432 525 or Anthea on 968 334 527 to book Spangles or to find out how to join, or visit the website: www. spangleschorus.com. my ambition... “Humans say such stupid things, such as – it’s a dog’s life. Don’t they realise how difficult it is being a dog? That is why I have an ambition – I’m going to be a human. I know I can do this, because I have seen it on the telly – you are what you eat. Now I’m not stupid, I know that if I eat chicken I will not turn into a chicken, or if I eat fish I will not turn into a fish – that would be horrible – living in the water - eugh. I am muy inteligente, everybody says so, so I know that if I eat human food then I will turn into a human. I keep telling this to my English Mum but she still keeps feeding me dog food. ‘You’re a dog’ she says ‘you eat dog food.’ I know, but how will I ever turn into a human if she keeps feeding me dog food? But when I am a human I will make some changes. Firstly I will have a key, so I can open doors whenever I like and I will not have to ask a human to open them for me – I will go in and out as many times as I like

By Jos Biggs

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk

Is Anybody There?

Somebody mentioned ‘Shuffling off this mortal coil’ on a TV play the other evening and then shortly after, it cropped up in a book I was reading. We all know pretty much what it means and I have heard it a million times before, but I wondered where such an odd expression came from and so I looked it up. Had I paid better attention at school I would have known, because as with so many expressions, sayings and idioms that we use today, it was predictable I suppose that this was yet another pearl of wisdom that dripped off the pen of old Will Shakespeare and is part of the ‘To be or not to be’ monologue from Hamlet. I have always been fascinated by the question: other than a knees-up at the local pub, what happens after we have pegged it? Is there something else beyond this life? Does the end mean the end . . . unlike yet another Status Quo ‘farewell’ tour? And if there is something to look forward to after death, will that include Coronation Street and Jehovah’s Witnesses interrupting our lunch?

The desire for answers on this subject is, not surprisingly, commensurate with advancing years and is partly due to the desire for knowledge, and partly I suspect, out of sheer panic because the old bloke in the robe and carrying a scythe is just waiting for his cue and we had better get our act together. After a lifetime of searching for answers, I know what my thoughts are on the subject, but you don’t want to hear about that and besides, we all have to come to our own conclusions in our own way. Suffice it to say I am more comfortable with the phrase: life after life. It’s a very strange thing about us humans that the only certainty during our worldly stopover is that at some point we all go the same way and yet for most of us, it’s the one thing in life that we find hardest to come to terms with. It is sometimes difficult to differentiate between what we want to believe because it gives us comfort, and what is a firmly held belief, instilled through faith or pure gut feeling. And as Woody Allen once said: It’s not that I’m afraid to die, I just don’t want to be there when it happens. There cannot be many people who, during their lifetime, have not at some point experienced odd goings on that would indicate that something other worldly is afoot. Things like déjà vu; accurate dreams of forthcoming events;

viewpoint whenever I like, especially at night!. I will sit on the sofa if I want to, and no-one will turn me off – I’ve never heard a human tell another human to ‘get off the furniture.’ I will have a proper bed in a bedroom. Imagine having a whole room just for your bed, how posh is that? I will get rid of the coche. I don’t like the coche – it takes my family away. They say ‘look after the house Lucy’ and they get in it and go away. If they didn’t have the coche then they couldn’t go away and leave me behind. They make me go in it sometimes. They take me to the torturehospitalvet. They put me in a cage in the coche, and as soon as it starts moving I am sick but they say I have to go to the torturehospitalvet or I will get sick – well I’ve just been sick, so what are they talking about? Better go now and eat my nice dog biscuits. She says they are nice, but I’ve never seen her eat one, so how does she know? Lucero Rodriguez Biggs”

apparitions and near death experiences – the last of which has always been of particular interest to me. My good friend Dougie once claimed to have had an out-ofbody experience, but I doubt very much that’s what it was. I was there at the time and he wasn’t so much plastered, as rendered, pebble dashed and finished off with two coats of Dulux emulsion. It was more a case of an out-ofhead experience. It is said that a sure sign of a much loved departed friend or family member trying to reassure us that all is well on the other side, is the discover y of a white feather in the most inexplicable of places. It had me wondering if anyone has ever taken the trouble, on finding one of these celestial tokens, to have an expert examine the DNA to discover its source. I mean, it would surely give us some answers or at the very least, provide some intriguing possibilities. If it turned out to be from a turkey or a pigeon, then what would that tell us? Well plenty I suppose, if the dearly departed had been either an employee at Bernard Matthews or a pigeon fancier; but if the DNA proved to be from some hitherto undiscovered species then hey . . . perhaps a bit of Angels wing. No

seriously. My late Mum always kept an array of small pot plants on the window sills, including a Christmas cactus. I cannot be sure how long she had this particular plant, but I remember it sitting in its designated spot in the front room window seemingly forever. It always looked healthy enough, but to my Mother’s perpetual disappointment, it never flowered – not at the designated time during the festive season, nor at any other time during the year. Then after her passing and on the morning of her funeral, we came down stairs to find it a mass of crimson flowers, e v e n though this was in June. It was the only time during that whole heartbreaking period that my old Dad lost it, with a mixture of tears of joy and sadness. The message could not have been clearer.

The Olive Mill riot and siege lasted the best part of a weekend. Shattered windows, blackened walls and burning outbuildings, in fact all the requisites for a really successful riot festooned the Calle Mirador. To say a riot is successful would be a contradiction anywhere else apart from Alqueria. The people of Alqueria have honed and fashioned the riot to make it almost an art form. It is as well practised as a fire-drill but a lot more enjoyable with no shortage of participants. Those who are too old or timid to join-in, watch from upstairs windows offering advice and encouragement. The cobblestones which make up the Calle Generalissimo have three sets of numbers etched on their undersides. The first set is their position in the barricade, this is to aid rapid deployment. The second, the distance which should be achieved when the stone is hurled at an angle of forty-five degrees by an average male between the ages of twenty-five and forty. The third, its position back in the street so things can get back to normal quickly and the next piece of civil unrest planned. The only person not involved in this lethal pastime is Loco Paco. In a world of his own he continued to walk the streets talking to his imaginary five-foot rodent. He could be seen emerging from the smoke of battle, an inane grin from ear to ear and oblivious of the surrounding destruction. Paco’s distinctive walk made him easily recognisable and guaranteed his safety. When he brought the weight down on his front foot, his body seemed to rise into the air. It gave the impression that he was trying to hold down a bunch of helium filled balloons. The Bomberos, on such occasions use discretion, this being the better part of valour, and valour being in rather short supply. With Rodriquez’s olive mill burning the question of whether to attend or not was settled with the toss of a coin. However with manual dexterity being in a short a supply as valour the coin was dropped and landed in an old pair of Sudoroso Joe’s fire socks. Another coin, to see who would retrieve the first was tossed and duly dropped. This process continued until the fire had burnt itself out. It is only because Alqueria is built largely of stone that the village has lasted so long. With civil unrest being such a popular pastime it is sometimes difficult to determine when one riot finishes and another begins. Regarding this particular insurrection, the reason was either the sacking of several Hill People from the olive mill or because it was the one hundred and sixty-fifth day after Epiphany.

braben’s blog... Important instructions Do you ever feel like doing something just so out of the ordinary and maybe rebelling a little? Just imagine, for example, the thrill when you walk casually into Debenhams and shout “BHS”! Well, if not exactly a shout, at least whisper it in a rather loudish whisper so those scary make up salespeople can’t hear you. I did something incredibly rebellious only the other day; I have socks with the days of the week on them and on Monday I quite deliberately put a pair on which said, very clearly for anyone to see, Thursday. Now, that’s pushing the rebellious boat out quite a bit, even if I do say so myself, although I wouldn’t expect you to go quite that far. If you look closely you’ll find that there are countless people who do some very strange things on quite a regular basis. There are those for whom their weekend isn’t the same unless they’ve walked barefoot over white hot coals. I haven’t yet heard of an explanation for this which would encourage me to spend weekends singeing my feet and causing irreparable damage to perfectly good socks. And then there is the downright open mouthed unbelievable behaviour that puts even those hot coals to shame. And no, I’m not even talking people who collect rare Action Men-are there any rare ones? Or others who dress up as Science Fiction characters and spend huge chunks of money going to meet, other people, who have dressed up as similar characters to…to…well what do they do when they get together? But that’s for another time. I want to finish on something that takes the prize for out of the ordinarying! It was in Argentina and a man robbed a bank. Although it isn’t the sort of thing most of us do as a matter of course, robbing a bank is perhaps not that out of the ordinary for some. It wasn’t the robbing of the bank that was so unusual, but the fact that he did Graham is married it whilst wearing a motor cycle helmet and a to Helen and has a daughter, Alice. sock. And nothing else! He lives part of the This incident has left me pondering two year near Albox, things, well three if I am to be precise. Why but works in Qatar, teaching. If you wish was this man wearing just the one sock and where exactly was he wearing it? Finally, I’m to contact Graham regarding this intrigued to know just how the police may article email: have sorted out the identity parade-well, helenandg@yahoo. aren’t you? co.uk

A quiet summers day at the beach - NOT! How to plant a tree, civvy street version; in autumn dig a hole, putting compost or mulch at the bottom, carefully place the tree in the hole making sure the roots are untangled to enable them to grow. Then using a mix of soil and compost fill the hole in, pressing down firmly yet gently to leave a shallow depression. This ensures water can collect around the base of the tree with no run off. Water liberally and again every few days for a month. After that once weekly will do for the next year until the tree is established. Spanish council employee version; buy the tree from a relation of the Mayor as luckily they will own a garden centre. Pay full price with a little extra on top to ensure the tree is top quality. Take delivery of the tree in late spring making sure it’s thrown roughly from the truck, then leave the tree to dry out in the sun for a few days. Return with 3 colleagues to watch another man dig the hole. Plonk the tree in any old how ensuring an empty fag packet and a half eaten sandwich go in too as fertilizer. Then stamp it down really hard to ensure its set like concrete, maybe it will be vertical, maybe not. Water it only if there is time before lunch or pee on it instead. Finally walk away never to return, this last instruction is really important as if the tree survives all this it’s bad news for future employment; best the tree dies so it can be dug up and the tax payers will pay next year to repeat the process. How to water plants civvy street version; as plants drink

at night its best to wait until after sunset. The plants will get maximum benefit as less water evaporates as its cooler. If using a watering system ensure all water jets are working and are pointed towards the plants to conserve water. Banks, ridges and canals can be formed to ensure even coverage of the water so it flows to where needed. Repeat as necessary during the season. How to water plants Spanish council employee version; clock in about morning time, light a fag and stop for breakfast, then turn on the tap whilst adjusting the spray on the hosepipe to the fine mist setting and leisurely spray all the leaves. Tax payers will be proud to see their council employees working hard in the heat of the day and be more understanding when the plants need to be replaced when they either scorch or die from a lack of water reaching the roots. When using lawn sprinklers and irrigation systems, ensure they are only turned on in the day time to ensure maximum evaporation. Also only half the water is to be aimed at the plants, the rest should pour onto the tarmac. This ensures extra water usage so helping the Mayors other relation who coincidentally runs the local water company. Lastly to reinforce in the public eye just how hard council employees work, make sure that anything needing doing on the beach is done once the school holidays start. Perhaps block off access to the sea entirely and drive up and down the beach on heavy machinery. So when holidaymakers come down to the beach, instead of idling their hours away Enjoy Stephens musings? oday, in the ongoing saga of emails, we should cover attachments and limitations. In one regards both subjects are inextricably linked but as limitations is a short subject, and easily covered, we will deal with it first. For the sake of my poor typing finger (I only use one! I am not a secretary, I diagnose and fix computers) and column space, I will refer to MicroSoft as MS. Limitations! What on earth are they and why are they in place? Hotmail have several limits and have these for very good reason. The first of these is not readily known but is a security device to ensure that “Windows Live Hotmail” spots what it deems to be suspicious activity; a large and sudden increase in outgoing messages may indicate your account has been taken over, for example. This limit is set by Hotmail to 300 (three hundred) messages per day. That limit is usually much lower for new accounts. What the time limit is to move on from being a “New Member” is unclear and MS haven’t, as yet, replied to my request for more information. There is a lower limit of 100 (one hundred) recipients per message but that is the Allowance Per Message. Again, this is to monitor for what MS call “suspicious activity” and can lead to a temporarily lower limit (as low as 10 (ten) recipients). Not only do they monitor and control the limits of how many emails that you send in one day but they also monitor and limit the size of the data files that can be attached to an email. This is where MS Hotmail gives Gmail a run for it’s money. Hotmail will allow a maximum of 200 attachments, each being 50MB each. That makes a total of very nearly 10GB. This limit is much less of a limit when you consider the time taken to download, for example, a program from the internet that you want of, say, 10Mb. Obviously, the faster your connection speed, the sooner the file will download! Still, with a connection speed of 2Mb, a 10MB file will take about 13 seconds to download. Multiply that by 200 and you might as well go put the kettle on! What can you attach? Well just about anything! Although MS does seem a little cranky if you try to send programs or music through their service, something to do with copyright and their unwillingness to break the law - Now that’s funny! Enough “Why”, now the How! Did you read last week’s article? If you did then what comes next is a waste of your time. Just in case you missed last weeks article, here is the short version. “Go to the band at the top of the screen, there is only 1 option, “New”. You want to send an email to me telling me how simple emails really are, and they are! Left click on “New”. On the left hand side of the screen is a box waiting for information from you. It wants to know where to sent the email you are about to create. Type “canducomputing@hotmail.co.uk” into the box. Now click where is says “Add A Subject” and now type “awesome or awful article” (please select one :-). Below it will say “Add a message”. As soon as you left click here, this message will disappear to make room for your own. Here you type just about any thing that you like! Finished? Good, back to the top bar and left click on “Send” and it is on it’s way to me. In the words of Alexandra MeerKat - “Simples!”. Send me an email just to prove how easy it really is :-) So till next time, enjoy the summer before it gets too hot (is that possible?) Eurogolf Today’s competition was a waltz, a format which is very user friendly, as a 4 player team only has to return 1,2 or 3 scores per hole (hence a waltz... 1,2,3.. 1,2,3). 57 players signed up for the competition and amazingly, they all turned up. The temperatures were high and the golf course was a very warm place to be. Nonetheless, the final result was a close run thing and everyone enjoyed another good day. Eurogolf has only 2 weeks left until the summer break. This year has been a very good year, both socially and on the course. Let’s hope next year continues in the same vein. If you fancy playing golf with a great bunch of people who enjoy good golf and a great social scene, why not give Eurogolf a try. SAMM (SAILING ASSOCIATION MAR MENOR) The end of the spring race series is fast approaching and one could be forgiven for believing that there are more handicaps than those attributed to the boats. A race meeting cancelled because our venue was otherwise occupied followed by the rescheduled day seeing the support boat out of action. So as competitors arrived everything was crossed that a good day’s racing was in store. It proved to be the best day of the series with clear blue skies, high temperatures and sufficient winds for an interesting competition. It was the first race outing for Shoestring’s latest addition to their fleet, a second Laser 2000. Whatever the final outcome both Lasers were going to challenge to be first over the finish line. And that accolade went to Tug Wilson and Vernon O’Byrne in the newcomer. The Balaton boats which have swept all in front of them in recent times could not up the game.

It was Don Clark in the Hartley who finished first, sailing solo – in previous races he had managed to capsize, lose his crew, redeem himself, but this latest race proved the guy can sail. Tug and Vernon achieved a second and the third dinghy, again a Laser 2000 with Pete Cadwell and John Down, came third. The second race added a further boat, the third Balaton (the one usually managing a clean sweep). Tug and Vernon managed to hold off Connie, pushing her into second place, but Don could only manage a third with the Hartley, but then he had gained a crew for the second race, was this a drawback? Only two more race days in the series but SAMM continues to sail all year round. Whether it is dinghies, day sailing boats, catamarans, cruisers, motor or 1 mtr radio controlled, there are opportunities to enjoy the mar menor. but due to hollow tinning we happily managed to change to Las Ramblas. Not everyone would agree with the word happily because as we all know Ramblas is a testing course needing accuracy to keep on the fairways and also to avoid the trees. The greens had been treated last week so were a bit sandy but on the whole the course was in very good condition and so quiet with it being too early in the year for the deafening noise of cicadas, which generally shriek from every branch in the summer months. It is a course that you either love or hate depending how you are playing and I think the positive feelings just outweighed the negative feelings today with most members glad to get out

SMGS at LAS COLINAS

How come?.....just when the greens at our regular courses seem to be perfect in every department, running true, receiving the ball well and a good steady speed… that seems to be just the time when the green-keepers decide to ruin them by hollow-tining! Although this twice a year job has been carried out professionally, perfectly and speedily at Las Colinas, it does cause a little disruption in a number of areas – not least of all to us paying golfers. To the majority of players the thought of running a huge, noisy piece of bulky machinery over a lovely receptive and true green is horrifying enough but to see it actually punching hundreds of deep holes in the previously perfect green is unthinkable! Snag is – it’s a very necessary and important part of greenkeeping to fully aerate the roots in late spring and autumn. For those who may be interested in learning more, try viewing an informative video on dcccourse. blogspot.com/hollow-tiningexplained.html which goes a long way to explain the procedure. Just about ten days after the team at Colinas had treated all their greens they were well on their way back to a full recovery and didn’t by any means spoil the day for San Miguel Golf Society members and guests. The warm conditions, quite

a bit of care and attention, interspersed with mowing and watering have all helped to speedily get the course well on its way back to its former glory. The society’s Stableford meeting saw only three of the five par 3’s give their NTP prizes to Glen Rapley, Herbie Smyton and Mickey Curren. Mickey also walked off with the best guest prize due to his very commendable 37 points. Silver division was won by Herbie Smyton (39), 2nd was Chris Hamblett (35) and 3rd was Bill Preston (33). Gold division was topped by Glen Rapley whose 35 beat Phil Birtwistle into 2nd place on count-back with Noel Bannon’s 32 earning him 3rd spot. Thanks again to all at Las Colinas for helping make it a super day on a very special course…..it’s not every day I have two 2’s on my card, both putts being well over 12 feet which speaks volumes for the state of the greens! Please visit www.smgs.org or give Baz a buzz on 966 731 033 to find out about all society matters and to book into any forthcoming Wednesday meeting – remember all guests are always made very welcome. TMGS Match Report, La Finca, 12th June 2013. Oh the joys of teeing off late and in the heights of the Spanish sun! It was a very hot day and the lack of wind made it hotter and for once, we golfers were pleased when the wind did get up a little as the afternoon went on. 39 golfers took to the lush fairways of La Finca and found out that the greens were a little on the slow and woolly side, but that can only be expected this time of the year. Some seem to forget that hollow tinning is a necessary evil twice a year. Golf at this time of the year is like the television, if you don’t like the programme, turn it off, if you don’t like the greens like this, don’t play golf! It is apparent though that some found the greens to their liking, judging by some of the scores where 4 players bettered their handicaps and would feel the scissors cutting their handicaps. The Silver Division saw a couple of the same faces but also a couple of new ones in the frame, one of those being Ernie Wilson who took 4th spot with 33 points and on the same points but a better back 9 was Pearl Sabine who took 3rd. The runner-up spot went to Colin Marsden on 35 points and this is the man who complained about how

his belt cost him 60€ and his “son’s” (John Eyre) only cost 20€. Without out stating the obvious Colin, your belt did take more of the cow hide than John’s, quite a lot more, ergo the higher price. This left Alex Goslan to secure the top spot in with 37 points. The Gold Division scores were a little better and Bill Starkey took 4th spot with 34 points with Roger Nielson claiming 3rd place with 37 points, Alan Rixson second with 39 points and this left the way to the top scorer on the day, John Eyre (with his new belt) who romped home with the bacon with an excellent 42 points. Gentleman, enjoy your new handicaps. Best Visitors on the day were Roger Smith, 34 points, just one ahead of Bill Humes on 33 points. The photo is of our Gold category winners. Our next game, Wednesday 19th June 2013 , see’s us at the La Torre (which will be followed by a meal at Asador Don Mariano in Cabo Roig) golf course, so if you fancy a game just look at our website www.tmgs.org or call the Match Secretary on 966719604. We also run small matches on Friday’s and if you fancy a fun knock around, contact Steve Higgins on 968 978 188.
