FIVE SISTERS REUNITED....
The Barrio del Infante Juan Manuel was the venue for a heartwarming scene when five sisters, who had been separated for their entire lives, were at last united. Twins Mercedes and Esperanza Patiño were given up at their birth in the Hospital Virgen de La Arrixaca to an adoptive family from Cartagena. Their new family never made a secret of the fact that they were adopted, and gave the girls every assistance when, about a month ago, they decided to investigate their family history. They requested their birth records from the Servicio de Protección de Menores de la Comunidad Autónoma, and through these they discovered that they had a sister, and

that the sister had a son named Omar. Bouyed by this discovery, but unsure how to proceed they engaged the services of a detective from Abelsa Detectives. The other members of this family, María José, Cristina and Carmen Ortín, who had remained in Murcia, had a complicated life story. After the adoption of the twins social services withdrew custody of the other children from the biological mother, and the three girls were taken into care at a reception Centre in Cartagena. Here the three remained for some years until a friend, Juana, took them into her own care. María José, the eldest sister, had always been aware that there were more children in her family than herself and her
sisters. ‘I always knew I had two sisters who were twins. Long ago my mother told me and I even tried to look for them on a TV show, but I only knew their first names, not their surnames, so it was like looking for a needle in a haystack.’ She said. This information was just what Salvador Martínez, the detective involved in this case was looking for. Under pretence of being a social worker, he interviewed María José at her home, when it became clear that the twins that she was searching for were in fact his clients. The poignant introduction between the sisters and their nephew Omar took place in Murcia. Now that they have found each other, the girls are determined to remain in close family contact. UNION
FAILINGS DUE TO LACK OF PERSONNEL....
One of the largest unions in the Policía Local de Cartagena, the SPLRM, has denounced the failure to maintain minimum services due to a lack of personnel. This has caused the closure of shifts in El Algar, Pozo Estrecho and Los Dolores due to staff shortages, and the cutting back to the minimum of the City services. The Secretario General del SPLRM, Sergio Porta said that only one single policeman is assigned to the station at Pozo Estrecho and another at Los Dolores. WOMAN FREED BY FIREFIGHTERS AFTER CAR CRASH
A woman had to be freed by firefighters of the Servicio de Extinción de Incendios y Salvamento (SEIS) after a collision between three cars on the Avenida Primero de Mayo in Murcia, near the Bar La Corra. The woman was trapped, with severe chest pain, and 3 vehicles as well as 10 personnel were rushed to the scene to free and attend to her. She received treatment for her injuries by a Unidad Médica Especializada (UME) and was transferred to the Hospital Reina Sofía with various other injuries. The occupants of the other two cars were uninjured.

REQUEST FOR COMPENSATION PRESENTED....
A dozen Espuña homeowners associations, neighborhood associations, agricultural organizations and businesses, representing more than 3,000 members, have presented a letter to the Consejero de Presidencia y Medio Ambiente, Manuel Campos, requesting that laws covering compensation for damage in the Parque de Sierra Espuña are fulfilled. They have called for a study on Barbary sheep (Arruís) compatibility with the environment of the park. They are also concerned that the number of Arruís has reached one thousand. These are a non-native species imported during the seventies from the Moroccan Atlas Mountains, and which could be a source of contamination of very serious diseases in livestock in the municipalities around Sierra Espuña, Lorca and the Noroeste. It is feared that they are ‘capable of transmitting brucellosis (Malta fever), scabies, and can be transmitters of other diseases such as rabies, through a large uncontrolled colony of wild dogs which are roaming the area. Requests have been made by COAG and APESE during a meeting of the Junta Rectora del Parque de Sierra Espuña in Alhama. The Governing Board of the Park has refused to approve the 2013 budget, saying that ‘there is no money to pay for arruí damage.’ COAG and APESE have threatened to start an information campaign to all those affected under the slogan ‘The Barbary sheep ruin us’, collaborating and providing technical support to those affected. Finally, they have requested authorisation to ‘eliminate Barbary sheep which freely enter private farms and crops inside and outside the park, until appropriate measures are taken towards the extinction and disappearance of this alien species, which is predatory and devastating to the crops.’
SIXTH RUNNING OF THE BULLS MOST DANGEROUS...
After a gentle and deceptively tame start to the bull running of San Fermin, the sixth running turned out to be the most dangerous, with three young men gored, one of them seriously. A crush of people blocked the entrance at the Fuente Ymbro, trapping the herd of bulls in a confined space until they could be diverted into an alley. A total of 23 people were taken to the Complejo Hospitalario de Navarra (CNH) and the Hospital Virgen del Camino. Four of the admissions were due to the running of the bulls and the other 19 were as a result of the blockage caused by the crowd in the entrance. The most seriously injured was a 19-year-old from Vitoria, J. M. R., who was admitted in a critical condition with asphyxia caused by crush injuries to his chest. Doctors are optimistic about his recovery. Asphyxia due to a crushed chest was also suffered by an Irishman, whose prognosis is more guarded. Another runner had suffered a blow to his armpit, which was treated at the bullring, while another was gored in the buttocks while running the Estafeta stretch of the route. Nine of the injured were discharged after treatment. The run, which took only 4 minutes and 15 seconds passed

without much incident until the bulls reached the Plaza, where the press of people had gathered to such a denseness that many were trapped and some became unconscious. It is thought that the blockage was caused by runners falling, and others landing on top of them, having been effectively funnelled together by the unexpected closing of one of the access doors. This in itself seems to have been caused by the sheer press of people. The barrier should be open enough to allow the passage of people through, but not the bulls. However, so many people were trying to enter the arena at the same time, and pushing the barrier, that it rotated, and thus effectively closed itself.
The ringleader, 28, is also accused of masquerading as his brother, even presenting the brother’s DNI, as he attempted to deny ownership of a backpack containing a whitish substance, apparently cocaine, weighing 475 grams. The three were intercepted as they drove along the Avenida Municipi. Officers also seized three bulletproof vests and four suction cups used to manipulate explosive gadgets. Three fuse cords and a pot containing 93 grams of cocaine completed the haul.
MAJOR HAUL OF ARMSD & DRUGS IN BENIDORM...
The Policía Nacional of Benidorm have intercepted a major haul of arms and drugs. Three people have been arrested by them as the result of an operation against drug trafficking. This led to the seizing of several weapons, were intercepted when the men were driving on the outskirts of Benidorm. One of the suspects was in possession of a submachine gun, a Kalashnikov AK-47 with two magazines, two hand grenades and other items thought to be explosives.

Sol Times reader Alan Cooper, drops a line with an observation on my quest for a decent real ale in the land of sunshine and paella. Alan worked for some 34 years in the beer brewing business, with Banks’s / Marstons, so I have the utmost respect for this gentleman’s knowledge. Alan mentions that cast ale must be kept in a controlled environment and within a cellar temperature between 11 and 13 degrees, and should be dispensed at a temperature that is controlled and constant, from container to dispense. All you say is absolutely true, but there is a little “Mashing & Fermentation taking place on “The Costas” as we converse. Saxon Brewery, down in Velez Rubio, Almeria, brew three real ales, Saxon Bitter (4.6%), Saxon Temptress (4.6%) and Saxon Porter (5.4%). The head brewer tells me the hops used, fuggles, cascade, golding and challenger, are all from the U.K.. The beer is served at the correct temperature, even
though the talk of a cellar, to Spanish bar owner, is met with a look of incredulity! At La Zenia, towards Torrevieja, can be observed a very large, illuminated, sometime revolving “Tankard”, gracing the roof of a large German beer house, with restaurant and garden. The beer is brewed on the premises, and gravity fed to thirsty customers on the ground floor. So Alan, there are a number of oases that we can call into locally, and further afield. Cheers!

El Castelar Quandary
A state of uncertainty still continues over the future of this fine college in San Pedro del Pinatar. There are now only 13 days remaining before accountants and the gentlemen with quill pens, make their way to the school gates. Fixing chain and padlock to the doors, certainly will not help to recover any
debt owed. In my June jottings, I mentioned a figure of 500,000. If this sum, could somehow be raised, then the bank (Or banks) would look to fund some of the outstanding balance. It would be in their interest to keep this most excellent seat of education open and running, and to the interest, of course, to parents, council officers, and indeed, the mayoress of San Pedro del Pinatar. Time is now running out for an entrepreneur to enter “Stage right” and rescue this school. Let us hope that this particular “Theatre of excellence” does not have to go “Dark”.

Gibraltar celebrates 300 years of British reign
...but Spain still wants it back! British sovereignty of Gibraltar is now 300 years old and the ongoing tugof-war between the UK and Spain over the Rock has never relented in that time. Three centuries ago on Saturday – on July 13, 1713 – the Treaty of Utrecht was signed in which the Kingdom of Spain ceded Gibraltar to Great Britain, a move that the Spanish authorities still call today ‘an historic mistake’. In a report by ThinkSpain. com, Spain wants the Rock to be returned to its Crown and form part of the southern region of Andalucía, as it was 300 years ago when Article 10 of the Treaty was signed to end the Spanish War of Secession – nine years after the tiny 5.5-square-kilometre enclave was conquered and occupied by Anglo-Dutch forces. Back then, taking over the Rock gave the UK and Holland a strategic point for setting up military bases and maintaining control over trading routes by sea – and in fact, a Naval base remains there today.
The same Treaty of Utrecht also ceded other Spanish territories to Great Britain in order to end the War, notably the island of Menorca – although this was handed back to Spain by the Brits in 1802. But the UK has always insisted on hanging onto Gibraltar, which is its only remaining European colony. Mayor of Algeciras (Cádiz), the province which the Rock would rightfully belong to if Spain claimed it back, José Ignacio Landaluce, says the Spanish government will ‘not relent in its efforts’ to reclaim Gibraltar and adds that the country has the support of United Nations in this respect. But the Gibraltarians have other ideas. Their prime minister, Fabián Picardo, has always said since taking up office 18 months ago that he will ‘never’ hand the Rock over to Spain – ‘not a single grain of sand or drop of water of it’. Indeed, mid-20th century
dictator General Franco went all out to claim back the British outpost on the southern tip of Spain, leading to a diplomatic crisis in 1940 – the year after the Civil War ended – with the UK. This led to the latter building a fence staffed with border guards in 1969 which was referred to as an ‘Anglo-Spanish Berlin Wall’ and remained in place until the socialist government of Felipe González ordered the fence be opened to pedestrians in 1982 and to vehicles and trade in 1984. The new freedom of movement between the Rock and mainland Spain means that some 7,000 people living in the latter – Spaniards and British citizens in the main – commute daily across the border to the Rock for work. Gibraltar want the Rock to stay British. Residents there celebrated the third centenary of UK sovereignty on Saturday, wearing traditional British costume and flying the Union Jack. And they have many practical, as well as historic and patriotic, reasons for wanting Gibraltar to remain a self-governing territory owned by Britain. Unemployment in Gibraltar is just three per cent, compared to 26.9 per cent in Spain and 36.8 per cent
in Andalucía, the region the Rock would join if Spain claimed it back. And the average income per head in Gibraltar is more than double that of Spain, and three times that of Andalucía. Based upon records gathered by the National Institute of Statistics in 2012, the GNP per capita in Spain is 30,000 US dollars, in Andalucía it is 21,000 dollars and in Gibraltar, 63,000 dollars. British citizens who visit Gibraltar are met with an
extremely familiar landscape – pubs call ‘time’ at 23.00hrs and shut at 23.30hrs, a branch of Morrison’s supermarket is located just over the border and the high street is home to a Royal Mail office, Marks & Spencer, WHSmith, The Carphone Warehouse, and clothing chains such as Top Shop and Oasis. Many British expatriates living in Cádiz or on the Costa del Sol travel regularly to Gibraltar to shop for goods from ‘home’ which they cannot, or would prefer not to, do without.

Plácido Domingo out of hospital
Spanish tenor Plácido Domingo has been discharged from hospital where he was admitted on Monday with a pulmonary embolism. The opera star published the bilingual message, “Going home...me voy a casa,” on his Twitter account on Saturday. Doctors say the 72-year-old singer was treated for a lung embolism caused by a blood clot in a vein – a condition which has prevented him from playing the part of early 20th-century Chilean love poet Pablo Neruda in Daniel Catán’s Il Postino at the Theatre Royal in Madrid. Domingo was due to perform on five nights in the show, which was premièred in Los Angeles (USA) in 2010, starting this coming Wednesday, July 17. Neither will he be able to conduct the Valencia Regional Orchestra in their open-air concert in Madrid’s Plaza Mayor next Sunday (July 21), a free-of-charge performance which will include the works of Verdi and Wagner. Coal-miners’ wives march across Madrid in protest over pit closure
Wives of miners who launched a countrywide protest march and lock-ins at numerous quarries in northern Spain last summer have hit the streets of the capital to reinforce their message. Joined by at least 50 outsiders in support of their plight, many of whom were families with children, the women say they are no better off now than they were a year ago – in fact, their situation is worse. The ministry of industry has been threatening to shut the mines in Aragón, Asturias and Castilla y León, in towns where coal mines comprise almost the entire economy. “Without coal-mining, it’s not just a question of losing jobs. It would mean losing literally everything. If the coal-pits are closed down, our houses will not be worth a single cent,” says

The group, which has named itself Mujeres del Carbón (‘Coal Women’), set off from RivasVaciamadrid some 20 kilometres outside the city at 09.00hrs yesterday (Saturday) after arriving in several coaches from their various locations in the north of the country. After stopping for a late lunch and a rest in Puente de Vallecas, they left at around 18.00hrs and carried on to the central Puerta del Sol square, making various stops en route. One of these was in front of Atocha station, where they sang the Santa Bárbara, an emotive miners’ anthem.

FC TORREVIEJA A DIFFICULT SEASON AHEAD FOR TORRY There should be 20 teams competing in the Tercera Group 6 next season including relegated local rivals Orihuela CF. Most sides are starting to assemble their squads for next season and most will now be in training. Torry have announced that their player budget for next season will be 70k euro’s which is a very significant reduction on last season. The total budget will be probably be just under the 100k euro mark if you add on top the technical team costs, coach travel to away games, new kit and matchday official costs for home games etc. The match-day official costs in Tercera are in excess of 500 euro’s and in my opinion are far too high with the referees in a lot of cases being paid more than the players out there. That can’t be right and the suits at the Valencian FA need a reality check. There is a rumour circulating that the council of Torrevieja will not be giving the football club a grant for the season 2013/14. This will hit hard on finances and has obviously impacted on the budget for 2013/14. The grant has been cut season on season for the last few years and that is understandable given the state of the economy. However, to give no grant at all perhaps sends out a message from the City council that it isn’t really bothered whether the “City” of Torrevieja has a “professional” football team or not. That’s a pity because a football team puts a place on the “map”. The demographics have changed in recent years and the ex-pats are returning to the UK rather than coming over to Torrevieja and its surrounding area and this has hit gates hard. Torrevieja is a “seaside”, “retirement” town and very “cosmopolitan” and has grown massively in population in a short space of time. It is not like Orihuela, Novelda or Elda which are Spanish “working” towns with more history associated with their football teams and families which have lived there through generations. Torrevieja football club has simply got to extend its reach beyond the Spanish and Ex-Pats and the council should try and help in trying to attract new supporters and make the
fan-base a truly “international” one. Torry have brought in a new manager Anselmo from Regional Preferente side Almoradi who had a successful campaign in the Regional Preferente and reached the play-offs for promotion to the Tercera. They have also brought in a new trainer from Regional Preferente side Callosa Deportiva. The manager will certainly have his work cut out in putting together a squad capable of maintaining its status in Tercera but let’s wait and see. Last season’s top scorer Koeman and captain and long servant Jorge have both signed for Novelda. So far Torry have re-signed local lads from last season Burguillos, Manu Amores and Sergio and also Luis Carlos and a couple of the youngsters who made fleeting appearances last season. They have also signed a couple of players from Regional Preferente. Keeper Carrion from Collosa Deportiva and defender Eloy from Almoradi. It has been intimated that they will re-sign experienced players JuanFran, Dani Meseguer, Rafa , and Gasch from last season and also Micro from Crevillente. There will obviously need to be an influx of a further half a dozen or so experienced players including a couple of central mid-fielders and strikers. The promotion of Elche to La Liga may entice some local football supporters to Elche. Torry have a difficult season ahead and need to attract as many through the gate as possible for home games. Too many so-called football supporters nowadays prefer to watch games on TV from an armchair or down at the pub. They, in my opinion, are not “real” football supporters. “Real” supporters attend games and get behind their local side. Let’s hope that more from Torrevieja become “real” football supporters this season. A concerned Darrylldinho following his adopted team in Spain prepare for the season. Try and keep the faith. Grandma Mia – This is Your Life Campoverde Theatre Group has just completed a very successful production of Grandma Mia – This is Your Life at the Community Centre, Blue Lagoon. The audience received the musical entertainment enthusiastically and fully participated singing along with the numbers. The wittily written play was a celebration of Grandma Mia / Donna’s life as she reached the milestone of her 65th birthday. Following the format of “This is Your Life” the audience shared events from Donna’s colourful life accompanied by well loved songs, mainly from Abba, but also featuring Viva Espana, Thank Heaven for Little Girls, amongst others. The audience were treated as guests at the 65th birthday party and readily joined in singing well known and loved songs with great gusto. Donna’s life started in England, moved to France, Greece and ended with her retirement in Torrevieja. Friends from all parts of her life recounted memories about Donna and songs that they remembered from different parts of her life. A fun filled night that also helped
raise valuable funds for the AFC Alzheimer Association who were in attendance each night. The Theatre Group will now be taking a well earned summer break but rehearsals will commence in early September for the pantomime Robinson Crusoe. Ladies who Lunch celebrate in silence!! The reservations were made, the menu chosen, a voluntary entertainer booked, guests invited and the celebration cake iced in readiness for the 3rd Anniversary celebration for Ladies who Lunch. BUT the local Police added their contribution to the celebrations at 11.00am that morning; they told the owner of Laurel and Hardy’s restaurant that if he allowed live music they would close the restaurant. It was extremely disappointing not to be allowed ‘the icing on the cake’. Never the less 44 ladies enjoyed the cava reception followed by a delicious lunch with very attentive service on the terrace with views of the Orihuela mountains. Two nurses were also invited, unfortunately due to emergencies where their care and attention was needed, one nurse did not make the lunch, and the second had to leave before enjoying her dessert. Anne Wylie Representing DEBRA -The Butterfly children’s charity received a donation from LwL of €500 to help their research project. Anne also gave a short address. Blisters, open wounds and sores form as a result of the slightest, rub or trauma. The final segment of the afternoon was the cutting of the celebration cake made by a member, Jose Caunce, fed by Janine and iced by Maddie. The honour of cutting the cake went to Pauline Orange, who was randomly selected by membership number. Search number seven for Marta del Castillo’s body
Yet another search for the body of murdered Sevilla teenager Marta del Castillo Casanueva has started after her self-confessed killer and ex-boyfriend Miguel Carcaño gave a seventh location where he claimed to have dumped his victim. Again in the village of La Rinconada, just outside the city, around 30 National Police officers equipped with georadars are combing the farm area known as Majaloba. Until now, sites of Marta’s possible location included the river Guadalquivir and a landfill site in the outskirts of Sevilla, both of which – along with four other places – have turned out not to be the 17-year-old’s final resting place. The search in Majaloba – near a maize filed off the La Rinconada-Sevilla road – started at 07.00hrs this morning (Monday) and Marta’s father, Antonio del Castillo, was present. Police say they are not going to dig up the area unless the geo-radar results – and reports from the helicopter with a geo-thermal detector – reveal any anomalies, given that the regional government of Andalucía has already spent close on half a million euros in fruitless searches since Marta was killed in January 2009 by her former partner, who was then 20. Officers say they hope this will be the
last search but that, if it turns out not to be, they will not give up in their quest to find the young woman, despite the courts having closed the case and refused to stage a retrial. A judge concluded that there was no need to obtain a court order if the family wanted to continue searching for their daughter, but denied their request to reopen the case after everyone besides Carcaño and one 15-year-old – who spent two years remanded in custody in a youth detention centre - was acquitted and the murderer himself received the minimum term due to the absence of a body proving his guilt.
The latest site was given as Marta’s definitive location after Carcaño, serving a 20-year jail sentence - reduced from the 52 years the prosecution originally sought – changed his story and claimed his elder stepbrother Francisco Javier Delgado killed Marta with a blow to the head from a gun, a version Delgado has denied. Carcaño’s original story was that after he met with his ex-girlfriend at her request to discuss ‘rumours’ he was reportedly spreading about her, they ended up arguing and he threw an ashtray at her,

A young footballer is in intensive care after being struck by lightning in the middle of a match. CAMPOSOL RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION Bob Owen reported that recently, he and Les Crook met with Lloyd Milen, British Vice Consul from Alicante and Bernadette Gallagher, Property and Consular Policy Advisor from the Embassy in Madrid. They updated them as to the current situation on Camposol. Although the Embassy or Consul was powerless in matters of Spain they can and do attempt to influence matters through meetings themselves with regional and local government. Both Lloyd and Bernadette commented on the professional way in which the CRA operates and the fact that they continually meet with those in authority in an attempt to resolve problems. They said this was by far the most organised and effective ex pat residents group in Southern Spain. Most urbanisations are unorganised and continually complain to the Embassy who is in general powerless to act on their behalf. Bob explained that they had helped one other urbanisation group to get established and had advised them on the legal way forward in forming a residents association. It was felt that the CRA could help others to which Bob & Les confirmed they were willing to help the Vice Consul in this task.
Jose reported that he is in urgent discussion with Juan Carlos the town halls lawyer with regards to the legalisation of some properties on B4 He was in discussions with Cllr Matilde on sector name changes. Although the change for Sector A to “Los Palacios” is highly possible to do, it is not yet official in the eyes of the Council. All 4 sectors would need to seek approval and apply at the same time to the Council. Any names for each sector must have an association from maps and plans of the area. Jose is working on this and a plan and application will be put for consultation before it is submitted to a Council Plenum.

Jose Navarro reported on various issues and various meetings and appointments he had had during the last month, these were with the Mayor of Mazarron (Gines Campillo) and various other Councillors and their respective departments, and Juan Carlos (The Town Halls Lawyer)
Dr Peter Pitt, the chairman of the Political Sub Committee gave a concise report of the last meeting of the PSC, He along with his subcommittee was still very concerned over the lack of any form of response from anyone official, over the application to use the Cultural Centre for a polling station.
Aqualia and the Council had still not been able to finalise any agreements and another meeting was imminent. Masa had approached the Council to offer a new agreement with regards to completion, the Council have responded saying they will cooperate if they 1) Release the bank bonds 2) Instigate a payment plan of €8m. The Council have made it quite clear that they will cooperate if these conditions are met by Masa, or they will simply continue along the legal route if they do not. In the end Masa refused to agree with the councils demands so no agreement was reached. The Rambla and CHS situation is still very much on going and is likely to be for some time. The CHS still proving to be very difficult to communicate with, although there was a meeting with the Town Hall planned. 34 Replacement and extra rubbish bins have been supplied at the CRA´s request. The use of the Cultural Centre for a polling station in future elections, is still awaiting a decision from Murcia and the delegation from Central Govt, despite the petition and application to do so was presented a long time ago. The issues that are either currently being discussed, or issues that will be discussed in the near future, in summary are: Streetlights – Children’s Recreational area specifications – Street Signs across Camposol – The official renaming of sectors from A-B-C-D The use of the Cultural centre for duties such as Padron Registration etc - The legal status of the “Back Road” – The compost Pits on D – 2 more garden waste bins . Jose reported that the procedure to be adopted for reporting abandoned and infested swimming pools was to contact Tatiana at the cultural centre, by email or personal visit. If no action has been taken after 14 days then to contact him directly with the details. Jose reported that he was looking into the C14/16 pavements and major drain problem along with the Environmental Health Councillor. He further reported on the compound on B3, he had called the department of Urbanism requesting a report on the structure and land. This he has been told is now available for him. The structure is owned by a Ceramic Tile Company (Pafer Azulejos) however they do not own the land. The enforcement is now

Jose reported that a list of areas available for children’s play area´s on A/B/C/D has been given to him. However the Council does not have the funds to provide / build these. They are prepared to provide the technical specification and plans but the funds of approx €8,000 for equipment only (Per area) would have to be sourced by other means. Therefore it is unlikely in the near future to happen. A discussion was raised over the piece of land opposite Masa’s old office that was flattened for a football pitch. Apparently this land has an embargo on it and has recently been up for auction, so there are some historical errors in its original allocation.

Peter reported that the constitution for the new proposed political party “The Camposol & District Independent Party “ was now complete. Massive recognition needs to be given to PSC Vice Chairman and CRA member Robert Mooney for the achievement of this. Now after numerous meetings between the PSC and the full CRA committee, along with meeting other groups (i.e. The Mazarron Country Club) it was officially proposed that the name of the proposed political party was to be, “The Camposol & District Independent Party” Peter further reported that he felt that the PSC had now done its job, what was important now was promotion and sourcing 3 Spanish Nationals to head the party.
Register for the padron and voting at the Cultural Centre. From September 27th between 10am and 12am, residents will be able to register for the padron and the voting register at the Cultural Centre on Sector B. Staff from the Town Hall will attend on the 2nd and last Fridays of each month to attend to resident’s needs. This has been requested by the CRA for some time but it was agreed at the last meeting that Jose and Bob had with the UIDM executive committee. We are now the only urbanisation with full council office services in the municipality of Mazarron.
Bob Owen to stand down as Chairman. Bob is standing down as Chairman with effect from 3rd July. He is suffering from on-going health problems which he needs time to address. He remains an active committee member but will be unable to give the time necessary to carry out the Chairman’s role. Jackie Drewe takes over as Acting Chairman and all other officers’ positions remain unchanged.

Qureshi, the first to perform the procedure in the country, believes it will be widely available across the country in a matter of years. He said: [This treatment] is the biggest thing in laser surgery in the last 20 years; everybody should be having this alongside standard laser treatment. ‘The procedure ensures that the risk of developing complications from laser treatment is virtually reduced to zero.’ According to the manufacturers, no one who has undergone the procedure has suffered any of the three most serious complications. Laser eye surgery works by removing tissue from the cornea to change its shape. There are different types of laser eye surgery but LASIK - which stands for LaserAssisted In-Situ Keratomileusis - is the most common. The procedure involves applying anaesthetic drops, after which a small flap is made on the surface of the cornea using a hand-held device.
After this, a laser is used to remove a minute amount of corneal tissue, thereby reshaping it before the flap is replaced. The procedure takes around 10 minutes per eye. With standard laser eye treatment, patients are at risk of infection, corneal ectasia (in which the lasered, weakened cornea gives way to pressure, causing bulging) and epithelial ingrowth (where the cells from the surface layer of the eye begin to grow underneath the corneal flap). There is also the possibility of regression, where the short or long-sightedness returns several years later. This results in the patient having to resort to wearing glasses or returning for further treatment. But with LASIK Xtra - which can be used with all laser eye treatments, despite its name - the risks are dramatically reduced. The treatment works by cross-linking the fibres within the cornea, making them thicker and substantially more
resilient. Eye drops containing a modified version of riboflavin - Vitamin B2 - are applied after laser treatment, which are then ‘activated’ by UV light. The ultraviolet light exposure during the procedure is comparable to the exposure to the ultraviolet light experienced on one full day outdoors in the summer. Without this treatment, patients are at a higher risk of complications and could need future treatment to cope with corneal weakness. Mr Qureshi said: ‘Every person having laser eye surgery treatment should undergo LASIK Xtra.’ The procedure is already widely used around the world and has been used on 50,000 patients in Japan alone. It has however only just become available in the UK a it was only recently approved for EU use. The new treatment is being offered as standard for all laser eye surgery at the London Eye Hospital, including LASIK and LASEK, to correct short sight, long-sight and astigmatism.

A quarter of people with diabetes do not get the kidney checks they need to detect early signs of damage, a charity suggests. According to a report by the BBC, Diabetes UK says data from the National Diabetes Audit in 2010/11 shows around 25% of people in England failed to get the urinary albumin check. Just under 10,000 people in England and Wales needed treatment for diabetes-related kidney failure that year. The charity said the figures were “concerning”. Kidney failure is a common complication in people with diabetes. Around three million people in the UK are thought to have diabetes, with most cases being Type 2. Another 850,000 are thought to have undiagnosed Type 2 diabetes, There are a number of checks which people with diabetes should undergo each year - to ensure that potential complications including eye and foot problems are picked up early. The urine check is one of two which can detect kidney problems. The second is a blood test which shows how well the kidneys are working. More people have this - but Diabetes UK warns the urine test is also an essential part of the check-up. However it says part of the problem could be as simple as patients forgetting to take a urine sample to their appointment. Barbara Young, chief executive of Diabetes UK, said: “It is really concerning that a quarter of people with diabetes are missing out on a simple check that could identify kidney problems early enough to slow their progression.” And she said the cost of treating kidney failure was part of the reason diabetes costs made up 10% of the NHS budget.

The Steve Gilmore Memorial Tournament
6th July: Ninety eight players came to pay their respects to Steve at Alborán Golf course by playing in a competition billed as a celebration and promotion of golf in Almeria. As well as local golfers, friends flew from the UK and travelled from Alicante Province and Murcia to be a part of the commemoration. The participation of every golf course in Almeria, as well as three from neighbouring provinces, ensured the day would live up to its boast, and players from most local societies, both English and Spanish, competed for the many prizes. The enthusiastic turnout certainly has established the competition as a keenly anticipated event for years to come. With a frisky coastal wind cooling the heat of a classic summer’s day, the beautifully prepared course lived up to its reputation as a demanding course to beat. A major thank you is due to JJ Serrano of Aguilon Golf who provided extra buggies at the last minute to be sure those that needed them could travel in comfort. Despite the wind the standard was high, with players in 3 of the 4 divisions beating par and most of the nearest the pin prizes being won. Denied the ‘slope’ the Ladies didn’t fare so well. A great turnout from Steve’s Spanish friends meant that the organisers were able to arrange a mix of nationalities out on the course and, despite the language difficulty, many players walked off having made new friends. Steve would have loved that! Because of a tragedy overnight in the family of the caterers, the prize-giving had to be resituated instantly. The officials at Alborán worked frantically during the tournament to organise a new venue; a massive task to be sure of satisfying so many hungry and thirsty players and their supporters, but one they achieved successfully. Apart from the many prizes won during the competition there was a prize draw of scorecards which sent almost everyone home with a tangible memory of the day. Hopefully this competition will have done what it set out to and raised the profile of an incredibly important, yet somewhat neglected asset in this part of Spain – an asset that should be contributing to the wealth of the local area. The organisers must thank not only all of the Almeria golf courses and societies, but also the principal sponsors, Liberty Seguros and Boxers GS, and the many individuals and local businesses who contributed to the event with their sponsorship, GSF Communications, EuroWeekly News, Pitstop Garage, restaurants El Albir and AcáCharl, Building Solutions, Blue Sky Pools, Spain Property Finder, and the Costa Almeria Tourist Board, Richard Measures, Adrian Thomson, Trevor Barker and Almeria lawyer Juan Cassinello. A collection for the British Heart Foundation produced €240 with pledges to top this up. Results: Given the conditions it was no surprise that local knowledge proved to be a strong advantage, which is evident from the results, but congratulations are in order to the many players from other courses who featured in the divisional places and NTP wins. Rachel Walker, Steve’s widow very kindly agreed to present the memorial trophy. Ward off miserable summer colds that the whole family gets subjected to by ensuring you and your family are eating five pieces of fruit and vegetables a day. One portion might be one apple, one medium sized banana, two kiwi fruit or a small bunch of grapes. Use the insect screens on doors and windows - they’ll keep any unwelcome insects safely on the outside - and avoid leaving doors open with lights on. Protect yourself from biting insects with a longlasting repellent Hay fever sufferers can keep pollen free by taking practical measures, such as wearing sunglasses, covering hair with a shakeable hat, showering and changing clothes after walking or gardening and keeping windows and doors closed during times when pollen counts are high (e.g. 5-7pm).

If you are unfortunate enough to get diarrhoea, rest, eat nothing for 24 hours, drink small sips of water regularly and replace body fluids with a re-hydration treatment available from the pharmacy. As the stomach settles don’t be tempted to eat too much too soon - bland foods such as bread or dry biscuits are recommended before returning to your normal diet. Large meals, particularly fatty foods and fizzy drinks, should be avoided before travelling to keep travel sickness at bay. It’s a good idea to always be prepared with travel sickness tablets, just in case. Summer is the season for all day barbeques and al fresco dining. With all these events come the unwanted sideeffects of indigestion and hangovers having indulged in too much fine wine, beer and burgers! It is easy to lose track of how much you are drinking when partying during the day so try to have at least one glass of water in between drinks. If the sun’s ultraviolet rays can still reach you on a cloudy day in the UK, think of their intensity here in Spain! Don’t forget to use sunscreen with a minimum SPF15 and apply sunscreen to your lips, nose, ears, feet, back of neck, bald patches, hairline and partings - these areas are often forgotten with painful consequences!

both to the best of our knowledge tax residents. We have a house in joint names valued at approximately 180000 euro and savings of aprox. 40000. We would like to know how much inheritance tax my wife would have to pay if I deceased, and how much capital gains tax would we pay if we decided to sell?
A . You are going to like the answers. Inheritance tax: If you deceased, your wife would pay NO INHERITANCE TAX, as she would be entitled as resident of Andalucía to 175000 euro tax free, which is more than the value of the estate she would receive. Please note that the 175000 euro exemption in Andalucía, is an all or nothing exemption. If you are one cent over, you pay on all but the first 16000 euro. Each autonomous region of Spain has it´s own exemption rates, and the legislation applicable (and therefore the levels of exemption) will be the one of the autonomous region of Spain where the heir has been a resident for the larger part of the five years previous to the death. Believe it or not very often tax planning involves moving from one area of Spain to another. Incredible but true...A wife resident in Almería inheriting a net estate of 813000 euro from her husband would pay just under 200000 euro in Andalucia while if the same wife had been living in Madrid she would have paid 0 inheritance tax). Could the lady have avoided the tax. Yes, but the tax planning would have required the family moved to Madrid. Capital gains tax: you will pay NO CAPITAL GAINS TAX because if you are over 65 years of age and are selling your main home (you can not claim this if you are a non resident), the sale is exempt of capital gains tax.

Footwork dance celebrate 100% pass rate on Exam day
Footwork dance students recently entered their first set of istd (imperial soceity of teachers of dance) exams. Students from 5 years old took exams in ballet, tap and modern. The examiner is flown in from the headquarters in London especially to examine the
students who gained a 100% pass rate with over 90% gaining the top marks. The exams are recognised by the Council for Dance & Education and from a certain level, for each exam passed the student will receive credits which will in turn be recognised as a GCSE, a level and eventually a recoginised qualification for a teacher of dance. The adults also took their first tap exams and received 100% distinction, the highest mark attainable in the ISTD exams.

FORCES CHARITY CALENDAR LAUNCHED Friday 5th July was a big day for Sara Peters of Saralara’s Bar in Puerto de Mazarron and her friends and customers. The 2014 charity calendar, which has been in various stages of production since January, arrived from the printers and was launched in style. Most of the 15 ladies who appear in the calendar were on hand to autograph copies for the many people who came to support the event and see the calendar, which is the first of its kind in the Mazarron area. The idea was conceived by Sara, who wanted to exceed the funds she raised in previous years for the Ex Servicemen’s Association of Mazarron District (ESAMD) and the annual Poppy Appeal. So, Sara and her team decided to produce a calendar along the lines of the popular film ‘The Calendar Girls’ but with a different theme – the 1940’s and the wartime era, incorporating poppies and well-known slogans from that period. The result is a professionally-made, tasteful and artistic product which is flying off the shelves and over 100 copies were sold in the first hour and 200 in less than a week. Sponsorship was provided by Brian Jones, Godfrey Hyde and Gary Sockett (the three amigos), Tuxedo Limousines and Viggos/ Bocapizza. Also (and on sale at) Market Tavern, Furniture Plus, Tea Pot, New Royal, Elliotts and Jane’s Salon. On Camposol - CHM office, Kwik Save, Just Fabulous, Holmes & Pegg and the Costa Calida Chronicle and of course Saralara’s Bar in the Port for only 6€ each. The ex-servicemen are very grateful to Sara and the calendar girls, their sponsors and supporters for all the hard work and effort put into producing what will be a great boost to this year’s Poppy Appeal. barney’s dog rescue Give a Dog a Home
Local Charity for homing dogs goes from strength to strength, but still needs your help
Barney’s Dog Rescue, based close to Pinoso enters its 5th year as a Charity. In 2012 it homed more than 200 dogs in countries, most of which were found roaming the streets and brought to Barneys by the local Police or by volunteers or concerned neighbours. 2013 looks already to be far busier for the Charity with currently more than 80 dogs either in the centre or at dog foster carers homes. The current financial problems that beset Spain are having a major impact
with more and more families struggling to feed their pets and sadly, in some cases they are left to fend for themselves. Up pops Barney’s to help. This year Barney’s has been inundated with pregnant bitches or puppies often no more than a few hours old. Currently there are 5 different litters of puppies at Violet and Terry’s home in Cañada del Trigo, near Pinoso. “All of our dogs are given health checks, and do not leave without their vaccinations, sterilization/castration and Pet Passport” says Violet. “In many cases the dogs come to us with illness or ill treatment or just simply abandoned and with the help of treatment from our Vets, Clinica Veterinaria Huellas and the TLC that either we at the centre or one of our many foster carers give, the dogs quickly respond. It is often said that dogs that have been rescued and given a new and loving home repay that with a great loyalty and friendship. It is as if they know how lucky they have been. Of course many more are not so lucky and the number of dog rescue and rehoming charities across Spain are getting busier every day. We try hard to find homes for our dogs anywhere in Europe and have experienced transport arrangements. The ex-pat community in the Regions of Murcia
and Alicante continue to provide support with new homes, foster homes or as adopters providing that important forever home. Our website plays an important part as our on line window where people who are interested in a dog can see what we have. In a charity as busy as this we need to be agile and the role of a foster carer is very important. They provide much needed day to day support by taking dogs into their homes and looking after them until a forever home can be found. The Charity pays the vet fees and provides the food for the dogs with the foster carer providing the much needed love and care. All our dogs are treated for ticks, fleas, are vaccinated, chipped, sterilized and have passports and given the best food and care we can possibly give. This places a financial strain on the Charity and makes the raising of funds very important. “Fundraising events are held throughout the year and we owe a big Thank You to all those who help organize and attend these events”, says Violet. Each year we produce a calendar and we very much welcome the support businesses give us by taking up an advert alongside the beautiful dog photos. The Lions Club of Mazarron Bahia July 14th 2013 Update on the collection of plastic bottle tops Firstly the Lions would like to thank all those who studiously collect the bottle tops and bring them to the Friday Bric a Brac stall and other collection sites. The steady flow of tops makes it possible to collect the volumes needed to help fund the trips for Little Eva. Soon she will make another trip to Philadelphia to the Institute for the Achievement of Human Potential. At each visit the family report improvements, she is now capable of understanding everything that is said to her, and along with improved mobility and an ability to stay seated for a few minutes on her own, always the hope is for continued improvement and quality of life for Eva. Eva can now communicate if she is hurting or wants food by means of drawings. Her treatment regime is very hard with daily sessions of Physical and sensory rehab. At home her mother takes care of the exercises and her grandmother takes care of her strict feeding programme, this is a 24/7 requirement and each improvement after treatment enables the boundaries to be moved on a little. The medication she takes has potential to damage her liver, but it is the only way to control the daily seizures. With
these controlled her brain can function uninterrupted and concentrate on the tasks given; it’s a fine line but a necessary one. The family can now communicate with Eva and get more information as to how Eva feels, helping all the time to ensure her continued safe development Once again the Lions thank you all for helping us to help those in need and those who cannot help themselves.

ART COMPETITION PLUS SHOE AND JEWELLERY SHOW THIS SUNDAY 21ST JULY AT BAR SOFIA IN EL RASO Fashion & Shoe Show was a great fit at Bar Sofia. Thursday the 4th July saw a very crowded bar in El Raso as well as the Fashion and Shoe Show there were cake bakers and signature dish makers. Two food competitions added to the fun of the afternoon and Martelle Cheater walked away with both first prizes, a cookery lesson with top class chef Gordon Atkins from award winning restaurant The Vestry in Algorfa and a meal for two at Bar Sofia for the best signature dish! Creana and her models did a fabulous job with the Fashion Show and the finale was all of the models dressed in black showing off a wide selection of pretty summer shoes - the whole afternoon was compared by the lovely Tony Kelly who gave his time to support the fundraising for The Children’s Home in Elche. The afternoon raised over €200 for the charity and next event at Bar Sofia in El Raso is an Art Competition for beginners on Sunday 21st July there will be summer shoes and fabulous jewellery and Dee the owner of Bar Sofia also has a few more “crafty” surprises in store! This enabled Reachout to use it as part of the cost of a catering oven as one of their aims is to provide a hot lunch each day in the recently opened drop-in centre. The group went one step further and now provide the “lady-power” and part cost of a hot meal for approximately 50 one day a week. “Manpower” often provides the washer up. The current financial climate is partly responsible for creating the need which the drop-centre endeavours to meet in the form of basic creature comforts and sustenance. Specsavers Opticians offers advice on food for healthy eyes A HEALTHY diet can encourage good eyesight and help reduce the risk of macular degeneration and cataracts, says the World’s Largest Privately owned Opticians, Specsavers. While women look to a healthy diet to keep check on their waistlines, or consider their heart or cholesterol levels and eat accordingly, few women think of their eyesight when planning their dietary
requirements. Jorge Martinez at Specsavers Opticas Benidorm explains: ‘The macula is the part of the retina that enables our most acute and detailed vision for tasks such as reading, driving, recognising faces and watching television, so it is important to protect it. It has been proven that eating a diet rich in antioxidants, especially carotenoids, is particularly beneficial.’
A study by America’s National Institute of Health, found that people eating the highest amounts of carotenoids have a 43% lower risk of developing macular degeneration than those who have very low amounts in their diet.

Studies have also shown that people with higher than average intakes of antioxidants – beta-carotene, lutein and vitamins C and E – appear to have a reduced risk of developing cataracts. Foods such as pepper, broccoli, sweet potatoes, citrus fruits and dark green leafy vegetables, like spinach and kale, are rich in these antioxidants.

50g/2oz golden caster sugar finely grated zest and juice of 1 lemon 75cl bottle rosé wine,chilled 150ml/1/4 pint peach schnapps, chilled 1 peach or nectarine, sliced ice cubes 1l bottle diet tonic water
METHOD
Put sugar in a large bowl and pour on 100ml/ 4fl oz boiling water then stir to dissolve sugar. Add lemon zest and juice then set aside to cool. Stir in rosé wine and peach schnapps. Just before serving, add peach or nectarine slices and plenty of ice cubes and top up with tonic water.

Plants ‘can think and remember’ Plants are able to “remember” and “react” to information contained in light, according to researchers.
Plants, scientists say, transmit information about light intensity and quality from leaf to leaf in a very similar way to our own nervous systems. These “electro-chemical signals” are carried by cells that act as “nerves” of the plants. In their experiment, the scientists showed that light shone on to one leaf caused the whole plant to respond. And the response, which took the form of light-induced chemical reactions in the leaves, continued in the dark. This showed, they said, that
the plant “remembered” the information encoded in light. “We shone the light only on the bottom of the plant and we observed changes in the upper part,” explained Professor Stanislaw Karpinski from the Warsaw University of Life Sciences in Poland, who led this research. “And the changes proceeded when the light was off... This was a complete surprise.” In previous work, Professor Karpinski found that chemical signals could be passed throughout whole plants - allowing them to respond to and survive changes and stresses in their environment. But in this new study, he and his colleagues discovered that when light stimulated a chemical reaction in one leaf cell, this caused a “cascade” of events and that this was immediately signalled to the rest of the plant by via specific type of cell called a “bundle sheath cell”. The scientists measured the electrical signals from these cells, which are present in every leaf. They likened the discovery to finding the plants’ “nervous system”. What was even more peculiar, Professor Karpinski said, was that the
plants’ responses changed depending on the colour of the light that was being shone on them: “There were characteristic [changes] for red, blue and white light,” he explained. He suspected that the plants might use the information encoded in the light to stimulate protective chemical reactions. He and his colleagues examined this more closely by looking at the effect of different colours of light on the plants’ immunity to disease. “When we shone the light for on the plant for one hour and then infected it [with a virus or with bacteria] 24 hours after that light exposure, it resisted the infection,” he explained. “But when we infected the plant before shining the light, it could not build up resistance.” “[So the plant] has a specific memory for the light which builds its immunity against pathogens, and it can adjust to varying light conditions.” He said that plants used information encrypted in the light to immunise themselves against seasonal pathogens. “Every day or week of the season has… a characteristic light quality,” Professor Karpinski explained. “So the plants perform a sort of biological light computation, using information contained in the light to immunise themselves against diseases that are

This requires an appraisal of the situation and an appropriate response that’s a form of intelligence.” She continued: “What this study has done is link two signalling pathways together... and the electrical signalling pathway is incredibly rapid, so the whole plant could respond immediately to high [levels of] light.”

There are many things that are a mystery to me. Such as: Why does everything fall on the floor when my back is iffy and I can’t bend to pick things up? How can bread in the toaster go from virgin to burnt in a nano-second? Does the toaster know when I’m not watching it? What keeps the world spinning at a constant speed? Why doesn’t it run down and stop? I have given passing thought to certain of these problems. For instance all the droppage problems the world over would be solved by the elimination of gravity. I was delighted with this simple solution, thinking of all the benefits – just stack anything you need at a convenient mid-air height, and there it would stay! No need for cupboards, no more broken crockery, and no more dusting of shelves! Then I thought of drains, and realised that maybe there were some things that were definitely better with gravity! I’m not too concerned about the earth’s daily rotation slowing down; in fact if it slowed a little bit it could be a good thing – we would get longer days, so more time to get everything done, followed by longer nights, meaning that, come morning, we would be more ready to get up. And the Christmas rush would become the Christmas Leisurely Stroll! I am currently wrestling with the Misplaced Persons Mystery. At this time of year everywhere is full to bursting with holiday makers. Go to the coast – it’s full! Not just the Spanish coast, all other coasts all over the northern hemisphere will be jam-packed with people on holiday. This is understandable, they have obviously come from inland. So why are all inland places, both urban and rural, heaving with those who need a tourist map to get around? In other words, how come that everywhere, repeat everywhere, is full of people? How can the roads, the car parks, the shops, the beaches and everybody’s house be so cram full of visitors? If the total population remains the same, then surely there must be a vast area with nobody in it. Yet ask any holiday maker where they come from, then go to that place, which should logically be empty, and it too will be full to overflowing with visitors. I may have the answer to this anomaly: How many times have you seen a non-resident person dressing and acting in a way that makes you say ‘Where do they come from?’ I think I know - they are in fact aliens, on holiday on this planet and cleverly disguised to almost resemble real people. Mystery solved!

I often leaf through the daily UK papers that are free to read at our morning coffee stop, but I rarely purchase one. This isn’t because I’m mean with my money or as tight as the proverbial ducks backside – which as everyone knows, is watertight – but because I baulk at paying an inflated amount for something that is a fraction of the price back home and moreover, when it comes to the weekend editions, does not include the extra supplements. They are even printed here in Spain for goodness sake - which is self evident by the news print stains on my hands and clothes after handling - so there is not the excuse of having to pay overseas transportation costs. But anyway, I did break with my regular custom this week and invested in a Sunday paper – but only because there were some items that I particularly wanted to study along with the write up of the Ashes clash at Trent Bridge and well . . . just because I

felt like it. Oh, and a nice picture of Joanna Lumley that I might cut out and stick on my book shelf at the side of my desk. Anyway, I ignored the remarks about moths emerging from my wallet as I coughed up the three euros, thirty and the hurtful remark from my wife - ‘Just a minute while I get my camera’ - and I looked forward to a lazy day of browsing the British news sheet over a small beer in the garden. I resolved to disregard the stories of doom and disaster that I would inevitably find within its pages and not use any of them as a basis for this week’s column. Regrettably, like my new year’s good intentions that lasted less than 24 hours in the case of my proposed new dietary schedule and drinking habits; another resolution is about to bite the dust. Strictly speaking though, it’s not so much as a result of reading the stories that describe the crumbling British economy; the ailing National Health Service or the thousand and one other things that are designed to bring on the feeling that my head will explode, but something that has not, as far as I know, been mentioned by the media. Qatada. We are told that following the signing of a treaty by Britain and Jordan, that ensures the non-use of torture, this man agreed voluntarily to return to Jordan to face charges. But why? I mean, we all know the value of treaties which are after all, merely sheets of Basildon Bond, a bottle of Quink and two politicians with a pen. We all saw the images of him smirking at the cameras as he boarded the British tax payerfunded private jet, and the simpering look of self assurance as he glanced out of the cabin window. I thought at one stage that he was actually going to wave goodbye. Then we saw a positively beaming Abu Qatada as he was led away by police in Amman. What was going on? Why would he willingly give up his free home, welfare hand-outs and Burger King – torture or no torture – to return to the country where he has citizenship, but crucially where he faces charges of conspiracy to carry out terrorist acts? What does this man know that we don’t? Well, we shall see, but something is definitely not right here and I wouldn’t mind betting that there will be another twist to this story soon, and that Abu Qatada will be walking free again. Just a minute while I go and get myself another cold beer . . . Some of the classified ads though, make me smile. Especially the ones that promise the way to instant riches. Here’s one . . . Make £1200 every day, guaranteed. Even giving yourself Sunday off this would mean an income of over seven grand a week and 374k a year. Your first reaction to this quite naturally, would be: Wow; I’ll have

The Remitroot plants which were genetically mutated in Don Miguel El Sabio’s particle accelerator became increasingly intelligent. It was thought necessary to keep them under lock and key with their existence on a ‘need to know’ basis only. Loco Paco was the weakest link however and contacted a national newspaper hoping to sell the story. As the reporter, José Patraña interviewed him it became obvious that Paco didn’t have all his paddles in the water. His credibility came into question when he asked for a saucer of milk for his imaginary five foot rodent. It was then Paco was thrown bodily from the newspaper’s offices. The Don, who mutated the Remitroot and Antonio Poyato who originally grew them nurtured their crop in secret. The plants showed a remarkable ability to learn. Soon it became obvious that they were intellectually superior to any of the villagers. Poyato and the Don were both thinkers and decided to make as much capital from the plants as possible. They would appear on a game show. The first problem would be to make the Remitroot plants look like contestants. The British Conservative Party has been passing plant-life off as human for years, so it can’t be that difficult. ‘El Tonto Más Débil’ is a game show hosted by a totally unpleasant and odious individual, Anna La Desagradable. This offensive woman asks the game’s questions while insulting the contestants, their relatives and everything they hold dear. Poyato thought she might be plant-life herself, which would certainly explain a lot. Poyato, the Don and two Remitroot plants faced a team drawn from the Over Eighties’ Limbo Dancing and Bungee Jumping Club of Níjar. As the game progressed the Plants nodded the right answers and points piled up in favour of the Alquerian team. The heat of the studio lights began to have an adverse effect on the Remitroot plants. They started to wilt and droop. Their nodding became erratic and they started to get answers wrong. Anna was in high glee and insulted the Plants with gusto. The Plants became despondent and a despondent Remitroot plant is something one steers well clear of. They shed their leaves, by design or because of the heat it was impossible to say. The leaves fell in the communal drinking water cooler. Now, Remitroot is a very effective aphrodisiac. As the water was consumed so the show degenerated into a heap of writhing bodies. The programme couldn’t be broadcast in its usual time-slot, but appeared at two in the morning with the new title of ‘Red Hot Anna’. If it were possible for plants to have smug expressions then these certainly did.

braben’s blog... ‘Bomber’ Harris There are so many things that have always been and continue to be, beyond me. Chinese for example or why on earth anybody would willingly watch daytime television when there are far more stimulating things to do, like ironing or worming the cat. But certainly one of the most mysterious things on the face of the planet, as far as I’m concerned, is knitting. You see, it is beyond me how anyone managed to make the connection between a sheep and what can be done with two pointy sticks. Actually, I imagine that the sight of someone coming at it with two pointy sticks was rather disconcerting for the sheep! But how did those early knitters-Egyptian apparently-get from seeing sheep’s wool to producing some sort of clothing? It’s an amazing leap of ingenuity and even today, when I see my wife knitting, with the needles a blur, I am full of admiration for the way a jumble of wool can suddenly begin to turn into a sleevealthough it still seems less hassle to pop to Marks and Spencer! Yes, life is full of little things that remain a mystery to me and also, I imagine, to many others. Not that this is a bad thing, I quite like the idea that there are things that are just there and I don’t even have to attempt to understand or explain them-like how the makers of Bounty managed to get a coconut into those little chocolate bars. No, I am very happy not to even have to question some things, but others, which unlike Bounty bars or knitting, which apparently serve no useful purpose that I can fathom, really ought to be looked at. For example, wax museums. Why? I have to say that the attraction of wandering around a place which has wax statues of famous people , some of which are about as believable as having those guys from the Pawn Stars series star in a Graham is married slimming campaign, is quite beyond me! Arthur Harris was born in 1892; his parents didn’t think him clever enough to go to Eton as his brothers had before, so gave him the choice of joining the army or going to the colonies. He chose the latter and went to Rhodesia, successfully trying his hand at gold mining and tobacco farming. The small matter of the outbreak of WW1 in 1914 was a defining point for Harris and he first joined a Rhodesian regiment. In 1915 he returned to Britain joining the Royal Flying Corps which was then part of the British Army. In his Sopwith Camel he shot down five enemy planes and ended the war a Major. Harris witnessed the futility and slowness of trench warfare and thought that aerial bombing was a more efficient way of doing things. Harris stayed in the forces after the war making Squadron Leader in the newly formed Royal Air Force. He served in the British Empires troubled hotspots; Mesopotamia, Persia, Palestine and the North West Frontier in India where locals rudely fought against their imperial masters. Exciting new devices were used such as delayed action bombs and poison gas. Some of the top brass resigned in protest at the use of these inhumane weapons but Harris simply stated that ‘the only thing the Arab understands is a heavy hand!’ Stationed in Palestine in 1936 Harris suggested that a 500lb bomb dropped on each of the troublesome villages would satisfactorily solve the problem of any revolting Arabs. He rose through the ranks becoming Air vice Marshall. For a man thought not clever enough by his parents, Harris set up the RAF’s night training programme and wrote a paper on the role RAF would play in event of a major war. By the start of WW2 Harris was Deputy Chief of Air Staff. Bombing was not yet part of Britain’s war strategy as navigational skills were not up to long flying missions and less than 1 bomb in 10 landed within 5 miles of the intended targets. Things changed in 1942 when Harris became commander in chief of Bomber Command. Harris had studied German bombing tactics from the Spanish Civil War and correctly reasoned that mass destruction of civilian targets
would hasten the end of the war. A Professor Lindemann thought the same, suggesting to Churchill that ‘area’ or carpet bombing of cities would put a huge strain on enemy resources due to the subsequent repairs needed and also cause a massive drop in morale. Men and machinery would also be diverted from the frontline to defend cities. Thus the term ‘total war’ came into existence and these ideas were quickly put into use by ‘Bomber’ Harris. The first ever 1000 bomber raid took place over two nights at the end of May 1942; Cologne was targeted with 1400 tonnes of mostly incendiaries dropped. 2500 fires were started causing massive damage. 18 months previously the Luftwaffe had tried the same in the Blitz but with much less effect. Harris also gained another nickname, ‘butcher’ as he used statistics to estimate potential Allied losses. 43 planes were lost and it was deemed a success. A year Hamburg was attacked in the same way, nicknamed the Hiroshima of Germany as 10 square miles of the city was obliterated. These attacks severely weakened Germany however ‘Bomber’ Harris will also be remembered as the man who destroyed the beautiful medieval city of Dresden in February 1945, in the dying days of the war. Thunderbird Part 2. - The empire strikes back! Last time we looked at Thunderbird as a replacement for the problems of ‘normal’ online email systems. You found, downloaded and installed the program ready for use, didn’t you? Good! Today we have to set it up by starting Thunderbird and following the ‘white rabbit’ – oops! Sorry, that’s the ‘matrix’ movie! I meant following the ‘windows’! We do this by starting the program. This is the point you will be shown a screen that will help you in the setting up of the your emails. So, first question. Do you have an email address? If not, then Thunderbird offers you the opportunity to find one by putting in your chosen name into the search bar at the top. The downside is that every name displayed, is a yearly ‘paid for’ address, and to date I can’t see the ready advantages of paying for something that is entirely suitable and free (Did I mention Free?)! You have then 2 more options, ‘Use your own address’ or ‘Skip and fill in manually later’. Well if you have an email address and want Thunderbird to set it up for you, choose option 1. If you’re a smarty pants and like doing things the hard way, choose option 2. Being lazy, I’ve chosen option 1. In the next screen Thunderbird wants your full name, the email address and password. Don’t worry about this information being stored on your computer, it is encrypted and would take weeks to crack. (far easier to crack your email provider and get thousands of addresses)! In my case it was ‘Trevor Spencer’; ‘canducomputing@hotmail.co.uk’ and ‘D0nt Kr4ck mY p255w0rd’. Thunderbird now checks the internet for the setting and displays the ones that work. There is a button at the bottom of the screen labelled ‘Done’, I clicked on it and it checked the password by trying to access the email account, and as it was the right one, the installation of my first email address was complete. For more email addresses go to the menu bar → ‘Tools’ → ‘Account settings’ → ‘Account actions’ (at the bottom of the screen) and just follow the same process. The main working page should now appear. One thing I didn’t like was the minimalist interface. Where is the menu bar? Well, if you ‘RIGHT CLICK’ just next to the ‘Tab’, you will get a drop down box. There is an ‘UnTicked’ option ‘LEFT CLICK’ this option and the menu bar will appear. The next bit might take a while as Thunderbird now reads all the email from the server and compares them to what is has stored, which right now, is none. Pretty soon the emails are down and you can read them at your leisure. Emails arrived, you can just enjoy the ease of only one method of reading, replying and writing your emails. Later you can start to tweak how things are done in the program but for now you have a working, single place, to store in, create and reply to, all your electronic correspondence. I’m out of space for now but am writing a complete ‘How To’ that will be for sale at the next ‘La Vida Fayre’. VEGA BAJA PREMIER GOLF LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION – 12th JULY at EL VALLE GOLF RESORT CLUB 25 SERENA Golf Society CROWNWED CHAMPIONS FOR 2013 The Vega Baja Premier Golf League concluded the season for the Premier Division at El Valle Golf Resort, and it was a warm sunny 30 degrees. The
course was in prime condition which was an ideal way for the teams holding first and second places to play each other. Club 25 Serena held a slender 2 point difference over Las Ramblas and with 15 points up for grabs it was going to be a thrilling climax to the season. It was Las Ramblas who were in a determined mood with the
sport duo’s of Lindsay Forbes and Geoff Biggerstaff winning the first match but the second and third matches went in favour of Club 25 Serena with Barry Gibb/Martin Oakley and Ian Robertson/Alan Boggess being the victors. The final match was honours even oddly both pairings had the team Captains Mick Brentnall for Las Ramblas and Alan Ross Club 25 Serena,
their respective partners Mike Frankish and Les Lane sharing it with them. It was a match played in the true spirit of the game of golf and a credit to both teams RESULTS Las Ramblas G S 1.5 (34.5 holes) vs. Club 25 SERENA G S 2.5 (37.5 holes)
TMGS La Finca, 10th July 2013. It was hot and it was sticky but then a bit of breeze arrived to help cool down the 30 players trying their level best to knock the little white round ball into the slightly bigger round hole a few hundred yards away. That breeze then began to get a little stronger and (for some anyway) made that very simple sounding task a bit harder. Before I get to the results, let me warn you that whenever you play with Matthew Taylor, don’t ask him to describe where your ball went. Trees, as we know, come in various sizes, they are either big, medium or small but he will tell you that “your ball went by the big small tree”. Even our Norwegian playing partner looked bemused and that takes some doing. Okay, back to the results and there will be some might fine scissor work being done as I type for it took 38 points to come 4th in the Silver Division and Paula Hagart was pushed into 4th on the countback system by Les Wilton both scoring 38 points. However, these two were poles apart from the 2nd place score of 40 by Captain Mick Kennedy and even further behind the very impressive 41 by Alan Rickers.
Ladies and Gentlemen, please do enjoy your new handicaps and please bear in mind that even Jesse James wore a mask when he robbed people…bandits indeed!! The Gold Division was more of a steady scoring affair and 3 golfers tied on 34 points with Alan Rixson in 4th, losing out to Steve Higgins (3rd) who in turn lost out to Kenney Hunter (2nd) on the count-back systems. This left James Hunter alone at the top with 37 points (and another chop chop).

Lime Bar Golf Society Los Altos, Orihuela Costa The golf societies venue for the 10th July 2013 was held at the El Valle Golf Course. About thirty players took to the course in warm glorious sunshine which was in good condition although unforgiving for any mistakes made. The competition was the ‘Captains Cup’ in stableford format and the scores recorded are as follows. Nearest the Pin on the 9th Hole was Andy McDonald. Nearest the Pin on the 15th hole was Dave Cahill. 1st Best guest with a score of 27 points was J Mc Ginn 2nd Best guest with a score of 25 points was Chris Denee The captain decided to award the winners by mixing the the score cards and drawing ‘blind pairs’ with the highest joint scores, giving all players an equal chance with a cup going

RUGBY 7’s AND BEACH RUGBY CONTINUES ROCKET’S GOLF SOCIETY Vistabell Golf – 9th July 2013 Individual Stableford Rocket’s Golf Society was at Vistabella for the first time since its very popular name change to celebrate its founder and Secretary Ron “Rocket” Nicholson. He welcomed guests and new member Robert Scott Boy it was hot, hot, hot, thankfully Vistabella is situated where a breeze is not far away, but factor 30 is the order of the day. The course is in very good condition and the greens are some of the best in the area. Golf is one of those games that when you are having a poor day there is always one shot amongst all the others that makes you come back for more, this happened to one of our members on the 17th Par 4 (yes! the one that has water on the right that swallows your balls ) he put his second shot from the fairway into the hole, 167 meters away, for an Eagle and for massive five points. Good Results for Piroska in the Summer Regional Championships
This weekend saw the last of the Summer Regional Championships take place in Sedavi, Valencia. It was the turn of the 13 to 15 year old swimmers of which Piroska Rideg represented “Club Natacion Torrevieja”. After working hard all season Piroska had attained all the minimum times required to allow entry into this competition. Over the weekends events she elected to swim in the 100 m Butterfly, 200 m Medley and the 100 m Backstroke events. Competition was hard as all the best swimmers from 33 clubs across the region were racing. In Piroska’s first event, the 100 m Butterfly, she made a fantastic start knocking

These coming weekends will see the continuation of rugby in the area with rugby 7’s up in Alcoy on 27 July for their second tournament. It kicks off at 09.30 and finishes at around 22.00, so a good full day of rugby. It is good to see new teams setting up their own tournaments to attract more people to the sport. This is followed by the 16th annual beach rugby 7’s at San Juan in Alicante, kicking off at 10.00. I have been invited to both tournaments to be there with all of my rugby gear, so come along for two great weekends

Following this she had a good swim in the 200 m Medley on Sunday morning earning 7th place with a time of 2:47:06. Back again in the afternoon in heat and glare of the sun on the outdoor 50 m pool, Piroska won 5th place in her age for the 100 m Backstroke event with a time of 1:18:05. Well done Piroska! Fairwayz Golf Society Vistabella Golf near San Miguel was the venue for our Captains day event held on Thursday 11th July, the last event of the membership year. The weather became hotter as the day progressed and buggies were definitely the order of the day, however there was another society playing at the course and buggies were limited, so a few of us who believed in our personal fitness took to walking. I was never so glad to stand under a lovely cold shower after playing 22 holes of golf, my feet felt like I had been walking on hot coals. Anyway we managed it, the course was in excellent condition and the cold draught cider was very much appreciated afterwards. Our Captain and Handicap secretary had worked out the day’s events, with nearest the pins and longest drives, and prizes for everyone at the presentation. The prize giving
was held at Fairwayz Sports Bar in Dolores, where we were treated to an amazing cold buffet put out by the staff. Our thanks go to Captain Tony Macmillan, and Handicap secretary Steve Hamilton for their hard work arranging the event and also throughout the year. Also thanks go to Fran Cummins and his staff at Fairwayz for their hospitality throughout the year. We had 2 categories in play and I have listed the top three in each one. The results were as follows:Gold Category. 1st - Fran Cummins 37pts. 2nd - Derek Briggs 34pts on c/b. 3rd - Steve Hamilton 34pts. El Plantio 2 Golf Society 10/11 July at Lorca It looks as if this away event will become a custom in future years as the two days were much enjoyed by golfers and partners alike. Whilst the golfers enjoy the challenging course the ladies enjoyed the spa at the hotel and shopping in Lorca although some did get caught in a thunder storm. The format for the day was a Texas Scramble, which is always enjoyable but especially so at Lorca with the long carries over the many ravines and ditches. We were helped along the way by Mick the Grip who kindly sponsored the NTPs, always a pleasure Mick. Our thanks to Ignacio De Semancas for his
assistance at the course and helping with the shot gun start. After a hot and enjoyable day we savoured a cool beer whilst the prize presentation was given by David Dodd, which went something like this: 1st team Mick Reeves, Malcolm Morrison, Gordon Cobb, David Dodd 2nd team Peter Savidge, Gail Coultate, Andy Ayres, Scott Blair 3rd team Colin Ranson, Padraig O,Brien, Danny McErlean, Geoff Dowsett NTPs Stan Earle, Danny McErlean, and someone called G. Coultate got 2 There were 4 2s with one team getting two.
After the presentation back to the hotel to get ready for the evening meal and a get together. From all who went on this trip we would like to thank David and Joan Dodd who organised the event from start to finish. David is stepping down at the end of the year from his position as Social Secretary, he will be a hard act to follow. On Tuesday we had a Texas Scramble competition, this is where a team of three players all tee off and then choose the best shot and all players play from there and so-on until the ball is holed out. Like all golf games, lots of fun and lots of frustration, especially from my team as all three of us missed an 18” putt, this cost us dearly as we finished third instead of second. El Plantio 2 Golf Society, are full members of the Par 3 course at El Plantio and anyone who would like to join us would be welcome. We meet at 9:00am on Tuesday for our main weekly competition and on Friday
and Sunday at 9:00am for a friendly Stableford game.
