Spain Allocates One Million Euros Aid Package for Fishermen
The Spanish Government has allocated almost ONE MILLION Euros in financial aid to Spanish fishermen from Algeciras and La Linea De La Conception caught up in the Gibraltar dispute.
According to a press release on the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment website, the Spanish Government will pump €900,000 into an aid package to compensate and offset the loss of revenues from fishing vessels affected in the latest Gibraltar spat. Under the aid package, Spanish vessels that can no longer fish in the area where concrete blocks have been dumped by Gibraltar authorities will be able to claim up to €30,000 between 1st August 2013 and 31st January 2014. However, these dates may be extended if the current situation persists up to a maximum of 3 years. Crew members and those serving the vessels will also be compensated, however this will come from vessel owners and managers. Tensions escalated to the front pages in July after Gibraltar increased its artificial reef in the Bay of Algeciras using concrete blocks ultimately ending the ability for

Spanish fishermen to fish there through fear of damaging nets and trawling equipment. The Spanish Government promptly waded in and restricted movement through the frontier border separating the two nations and raised the rhetoric with threats of cutting telecommunications, restricting airspace and charging an entry and exit fee at the border. However, Gibraltar has remained steadfast by stating the concrete blocks are in their territorial waters which Spanish fishermen have been fishing illegally. It is estimated there are just over 100 fishermen affected by the escalating dispute over territorial waters between Gibraltar and Spain. However, more than 10,000 Spanish residents are employed in Gibraltar. As crisis hit Spain attempts to shore up its finances, news of the aid package has filtered through slowly, however it will no doubt anger Teachers, Nurses and other state employees who have had to seek alternative employment or retrain altogether in order to maintain a steady paycheque. fire destroys shoe warehouse
A fire has completely destroyed a shoe warehouse on the Granada road. The fire started at about two in the morning in the 600 square metre building. Tenders were called from Lorca and Caravaca Fire Stations with a total of 10 firefighters and six vehicles, (three supply tenders, one light tender, one heavy tender and one with a cherry picker.) The Policía Local and the Guardia Civil were also in attendance, due to the possibility of adjacent buildings catching light. The fire was thought to be extinguished, but the Caravaca Station was alerted that the building had begun to smoke again, so three troops and two vehicles were recalled to the site. The cause of the fire is unknown. The warehouse contained a large stock of items of footwear as well as vans and delivery trucks.

trees removed from murcia’s streets
Almost 200 trees have been removed in the city for reasons quotes as ‘a danger to neighbours and passersby, because they were diseased or because they had already completed their life cycle’, according to the Concejal de Medio Ambiente, Adela MartínezCachá. The felling has been carried out by the Servicio de Parques y Jardines. The Concejal del Grupo Municipal Socialista, Susana Hernández criticised the council for not informing the residents of Calle Puerta Nueva, next to Centrofama, where 12 elms were removed and replaced by mulberry trees. She suggested that the Council were going about the felling when many of the city residents were away on holiday. The decision was made to replace the elms with mulberry trees because the mulberry is a tree that is well adapted to the climate of Murcia and which creates shade for pedestrians.
restaurant disagreement ends in arrest
A disagreement between two workers at the Restaurant La Tana in Cabo de Palos has left one man in police custody, and another in a serious condition in hospital. Nobody witnessed the incident, which occurred after the restaurant had closed at 1 am. Workers have hinted that relations between the two men were not good. The incident involved José L., aged 39, who was employed for the second year as a seasonal waiter, and Mimou M., a North African, who has been living in the region for more than a decade, and who has been employed for nine years as an assistant cook at the establishment. On the night in question José L. left work early, saying that his father was ill. At some later time he was found bleeding profusely from a stomach wound, and was rushed to the
Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos (UCI) at the Hospital Santa Lucía. The Guardia Civil arrested Mimou M the following morning at the restaurant, where he uses a room set aside for staff to relax, shower and rest in between shifts. The police are searching for the weapon used in the attack.
Cruise ship passengers arrive in cartagena
Last weekend about 2,500 cruise ship passengers arrived in Cartagena when two cruise ships docked at the Muelle de Alfonso XII for the day. Of this number about one thousand were Americans sailing on the ‘Cristal Symphony’, from the Cristal Cruises company. August is not the best month for the local business catering for cruise tourism. Despite this, the Autoridad Portuaria is expecting to see nine transatlantic cruise liners docking here up until the end of the month. Shops calling into port at Cartagena include the ‘Quest for Adventure’, from Saga Shipping, and the ‘Arcadia’, from P & O Cruises, with 450 and 1,968 passengers respectively. Next to the cultural and archaeological tourism in Cartagena, the Mediterranean climate ranks as one of the main attractions, with the bars, terraces and shopping facilities all painting an attractive picture for the tourist. In the remainder of August, four cruises will call at Cartagena, bringing this month’s number up to 9, and a total of around 9,000 to the city. The last ship to call at the port will be the ‘Queen Victoria’, from Cunard Cruise Lines, with two thousand passengers on board. The Autoridad Portuaria is looking forward to an excellent autumn season. During September 15 ships are due to arrive at the Muelle de Alfonso XII. In October nineteen ships will dock here, with another sixteen arrivals expected in November, while December concludes the season with five dockings.

The people of El Portús have celebrated the I Velada Marinera (First Celebration of the Sail Fishermen). Dressed in traditional working clothes of the fishermen of 1900, they fished from the beach using nets, in the arte de pesca tradicional levantino. Fifty people partook, using traditional methods, such as nets towed between two boats from that epoch, and fishing from the beach, using rods of the time, and a winch from 1940. The fish captured were returned to the sea alive.

The Policía Local de Lorca have arrested three people for infraction of the Normas de Extranjería (Rules on Foreigners) in a Dispositivo Operativo de Prevención (Operative Prevention Action). Two of those arrested had a record for numerous criminal acts, and were ordered to be expelled from Spanish territory. The third person, who was charged with hawking fake glasses and perfumes, was an illegal immigrant. The arrests took place on Thursday, August 1, at Calle Miguel Angel Blanco Garrido. A second Dispositivo Operativo de Prevención was made on 9 August on the Calle Avenida Santa Clara, and issued against two men.

Parents and children, acting together on the environmental education initiative ‘#vivirenlamanga’ have gathered up 5 kilos of cigarette butts along the popular family beach of Cala del Pino. The initiative will be repeated every Sunday along the coast of the Mar Menor. Tired of many swimmers use the sand like a giant ashtray, a group of parents and children from La Manga has launched an awareness campaign and are undertaking regular beach cleaning operations. The collective ‘#vivirenlamanga’ has worked to mobilise residents and tourists through social networks. They are standing up for environmental and social issues, and against careless beach users. They aim to contribute to the conservation of tourism and environmental resources, to strengthen the environmental education of young children and to get the attention of the tourists on the need not to use the beach as a dump. Every Sunday for the next few weeks will be devoted to a different La Manga beach clean. On August 18, the group met on the beach of the Terraza ZM. The beach cleans, which have been sponsored by some companies in the area, are at 10.30 am. The organisers provide gloves and bags to collect the waste, plus some surprises for children.

Gib tug-of-war: A 50-euro border crossing charge ‘would be illegal’, says European Commission
European Commission president José Manuel Durão Barroso has warned Spain that it would be ‘illegal’ to charge a fee to cross the Gibraltar border into Spain. Barroso, in a telephone conversation to Spanish president Mariano Rajoy, called for the country to ‘respect EU laws’ in its tensions with the UK over boundary issues with the Rock and said that although Brussels did not intend to pass comment ‘officially’ over the 50euro border charge threatened by the foreign affairs minister – since it had not yet been applied – if Spain were to go ahead on this basis, it would be

Rajoy – mirroring Cameron on Friday – has called for the European Commission to send out delegates to patrol the ‘random and non-discriminatory’ border inspections on cars, creating queues of between three and seven hours, to ‘show’ that Spain was merely ‘protecting its borders from smuggling and money-laundering.

The small garden / seating area was built by the husband of Maria Del Rosario, as a permanent shrine, to his wife, who, until her death in 2002, spent time each week, in this corner of the Rio Seco, quietly praying.
Visiting the Rio Seco this Sunday evening, reminded me of the 1959 hit record, “Three Bells” sung so beautifully by “The Browns” This song, also known as “Little Jimmy Brown”, told the story of a little church, hidden deep in a valley. Foreign Office launches campaign to combat excessive holiday drinking
New statistics show peer pressure and cheap drinks can lead to more than a holiday hangover In a new campaign under the banner “On holiday, don’t let drink do your talking”, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office is encouraging young holidaymakers to think before and while they drink to avoid putting themselves at risk of serious harm. Expats are being asked to share this important message with visiting friends and family to help ensure they spend their time enjoying their holidays, not in hospital, jail or worse. New research shows that around half (51%) of 16-24 year olds say they are likely to drink more on holiday than at home. Almost two thirds (62%) attributed this to alcohol being cheaper. Peer pressure is also a major factor, with 40% of those surveyed saying they had felt pressure from friends to drink more than they wanted to.* Consular staff in Spain have already been called on this summer to come to the aid of British nationals who find themselves in trouble after drinking to excess. Will Middleton, Consular Regional Director for Spain said: “Going on holiday is a great opportunity to relax and have fun with family and friends, and enjoying a drink can be part of that. We’re not telling people to stop drinking but we do want people to be aware of the consequences of drinking to excess – and our research shows almost half of young people understand them already.

However, the Spanish IHT rules are still in force and conservative estimates based on data from the Spanish Tax Authorities has indicated that 60,000 UK families have been overcharged IHT by an average of £12,000 each in the last 8 years. However, only 40,000 are still able to make a claim due to the Spanish legal time limits, which stop claimants attempting to make a claim after 4 years from the tax payment date. Experts believe it will take 2 more years for the Spanish Authorities to amend the IHT Laws so, any non Spanish resident who inherit in the future cal also claim almost 100% of the inheritance taxes to be paid.

It is worth alternating your drinks with water or soft drinks. • Protect your drink – to avoid the risk of your drink being spiked, keep an eye on it at all times and don’t accept drinks from strangers unless you see them being poured at the bar. • Stay close to your friends – if you are drinking with friends look out for each other. If they seem drunk or act out of the ordinary, make sure you get them home safely. Never let a friend go home alone or with someone they don’t know. • Drink respectfully – this includes showing respect and consideration to other holidaymakers and local people while on holiday.

Fresco ‘Ruined’ By 82-year-old Lady Becomes International Tourism Sensation & Raises 50,000 For Charity
An iconic painting ‘restored’ by an elderly churchgoer which went badly wrong has turned out to be a lucky – and lucrative – mistake, says the tourist board in Borja, Zaragoza province, according to a report by ThinkSpain. What could have been the pensioner’s worst nightmare with the threat of legal action for ‘destroying heritage property’ looming has made her the most famous octogenarian in the country and netted over 50,000 euros for charity. She has also put her sleepy and hitherto unknown home town on the world map, and international tourism is booming in the area. Over 40,000 ‘pilgrims’ from several countries have been to see the fresco at the Santuario de la Merced church, paying an entry fee and also leaving donations towards repairing the building. And the domino effect has not stopped there: the unintentional celebrity has signed a contract with the council and has launched her own exhibition of 28 of her works in the town, which look set to bring in thousands more visitors from around the globe. Last year Cecilia Giménez, now 82, hit the world’s headlines after attempting to repair the Ecce Homo fresco in the village church without authorisation, completely destroying it in the opinion of art purists and the descendants of the original artist, or creating a new and unique work of modern
art, in the opinion of the public. The fresco had been painted more than a century ago, but was in a very worn-out condition. Merely trying to help, she had begun repainting the fresco ‘with all the love in the world’ – as she said she had done with others in the church when they were in a deteriorated state – and claimed she had not finished when the news broke. The artist, Elias García Martínez’s family and the council initially spoke of suing her, but later dropped the case – and in the meantime, photos of the painting were doctored and thousands of different versions went viral on the internet. While Cecilia was hiding out at home, devastated and in bed suffering headaches and anxiety, hundreds of thousands of people in Spain and beyond were signing online petitions for the heritage department to leave the painting as it was after the elderly parishioner had ‘restored’ it, and lauding her for having created a new genre of art. The Ecce Homo – or Ecce Mono, as it quickly became known, translating as ‘Ecce Monkey’ because of Christ’s new primate-esque features – cropped up in doctored photos

of Da Vinci’s The Last Supper, or with the face replaced by highranking politicians on social networks around the globe. Within days, visitors from as far away as Japan were flying to Zaragoza airport and travelling to the small town to view the painting, which had to be roped off to prevent thousands of people from touching it. One low-cost airline even offered flights for a euro to Zaragoza in a bid to keep the tourists flocking in. Bars, cafés, hotels and restaurants in and around Borja began to do a roaring trade, and the council eventually decided to charge a one-euro entry fee to see the picture. Experts had studied the painting in detail to see whether it could be properly restored

‘Stolen baby’ case tried in Europe for the first time
The first-ever case of a ‘stolen baby’ in Spain has reached the European Court of Human n Rights (ECHR) in Strasbourg amid claims by the family that a ‘cover-up’ operation has been deliberately staged to prevent them from finding out the truth. According to press reports, the solicitor for the national pressure group SOS Niños Robados (‘SOS Stolen Children’) Enrique Vila has presented the case to Europe after the highest court in Spain, the Tribunal Constitucional, threw it out on a ‘technicality’ – namely,that the legal time limit for taking action had passed. The case relates to a baby girl born in Málaga Civil Hospital on October 12, 1964, and whose family were told she had been stillborn. Her sister says none of the family ever saw the body of the baby and no documentation has ever been found relating to her death or the circumstances involved. Neither have any records of her burial come to light, all of which shows that her passing cannot

The case has gone through the equivalent of the Crown Court and Magistrates’ Court in Málaga, the Provincial Court and now the Constitutional Court which, in parallel with the High Court of Justice, is the highest in the land. All these have failed, which automatically gives the family licence to approach Europe. Sr Vila says that even though the case involves ‘supposition of birth’ and ‘false imprisonment’ – or kidnap – of the baby, which are criminal offences, all courts in Spain say the plaintiffs have run out of time and nothing can be done. The solicitor says he wants the ECHR to see that in Spain, victims of the ‘stolen baby’ scandal – affecting thousands of children born between approximately 1936 and 1990 – have ‘no legal rights or protection’ and are ‘defenceless at law’. “Not one court, not even the Constitutional Court, has entered into the issue in any depth whatsoever,” says Vila. “The Spanish State should be taking action in the

Twelve young ospreys taken from nests in Scotland have been released in northern Spain, in an attempt to restore a breeding osprey population in the Basque Country. The Spanish authorities asked Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) for assistance with the project last year. The birds came from the Highlands and Moray after Scottish Natural Heritage issued a special licence. The young ospreys were said to be “faring well” in their new home. The birds were released at the Urdaibai estuary, which is used by ospreys migrating between Scotland and West Africa in spring and autumn. They have been provided with nest platforms and a supply of food, although at least one has now begun catching fish for itself. The special licence was issued to naturalist Roy Dennis, of the Highland Foundation for Wildlife. He told reporters: “The species was

Marseilles-to-Murcia Coach Tragedy ‘Caused By Mentally-ill Passenger’
A ‘Eurolines’ coach crash in France which killed an Alicante woman was caused by a paranoid schizophrenic grabbing the wheel from the driver, investigations reveal. According to a report by ThinkSpain, the 29-yearold Ukrainian may not be considered criminally responsible, since the paranoid deliriums he suffers means he would not have known the nature and quality of his actions. According to the prosecutor in Narbonne, David Charmatz, the accused admitted he had needed to go to the toilet and tried to get the driver to stop, but grabbed the wheel when he refused to do so. As a result, the driver lost control and the coach veered off the A-9 motorway near Fitou, in the department of Aude, at around 01.30hrs on Monday. It fell down a 70-metre embankment and became completely crushed. Initially, French police had the driver, a Spanish national, on garde à vue regime, meaning he was under 24-hour watch, but he has since been freed when it transpired he was a victim of the accident rather than the cause of it. Police confirm the driver also tested negative for alcohol and drugs. The mentally-ill passenger is currently in a psychiatric hospital receiving treatment, and may still face questioning for negligent homicide. Two psychiatrists are attempting to ascertain ‘definitively’ whether they are up a case of diminished responsibility. If they find he was unaware of what he had done, he will not be able to be charged since, as Charmatz states, “one cannot judge people who are not conscious of their actions.” The prosecutor has called for ‘patience’ from the victims and their family members as inquiries

Of the 44 people on board the coach – 10 of whom were Spanish nationals – 30 were injured and two were killed. Charmatz says 18 of the injured passengers are still in hospital. One of the deceased is a French man and the other is a 55-year-old woman originally from Alicante but who lived in southern France and was on her way to visiting her son in her native city for a 10-day trip. Her name and further details have not been revealed publicly, since her family is still being informed and will need to identify the body. All the other Spaniards on board suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital. Eurolines explains that it had subcontracted the Marseilles-to-Murcia route to the company Autocares Águilas, from the town of the same name on the Murcia coast, two years ago. The firm in Águilas supplies coaches and drivers to cover the route in summer, when demand for tickets rockets. Three drivers – the one behind the wheel and two relief drivers – on board the coach which crashed are Spanish nationals from the Murcia region towns of Fuente Álamo, Lorca and Puerto Lumbreras.

Third balcony fall death this month: Victim, 24, was staying in Ibiza
Another young tourist has died in a fall from a balcony at a tourist resort, emergency services confirm. The 24-year-old man was staying at an unnamed aparthotel in Sant Antoni de Portmany, Ibiza, when he tried to jump from one fourth-floor balcony to another. He had apparently lost his keys and was attempting to get into his apartment through another open patio door when he fell, say police. An ambulance was called out at 00.35hrs on Wednesday morning but despite every effort, they were unable to save the holidaymaker who died almost instantly
from his injuries. This was not a case of the reckless stunt known as ‘balconing’, whereby young revellers on holiday leap from their balconies into the swimming pool – but a 20-year-old Russian man ended up in a coma on the same night after jumping from the terrace to the pool of a resort complex on Palma de Mallorca beach, just across the water. And two other young tourists, including a British national, have been killed this summer in ‘balconing’ accidents – one in Magalluf (Mallorca) and another in Lloret de Mar (Girona province).
Zara Co-founder Rosalia Mera Dies Aged 69
Rosalia Mera, the cofounder of the Spanish fashion giant that owns Zara, and Spain’s richest woman, has died. According to Spanish media, she suffered a stroke while on holiday in Menorca and was flown back to Coruna in northern Spain where she died at the age of 69 on Thursday evening. Mera left school at 11 and worked as a tailor before starting Inditex with her exhusband Amancio Ortega. She helped build the company into one of the
world’s biggest retailers. Mera was on holiday on the island of Menorca Inditex owns the Zara, Massimo Dutti and Bershka brands. In a statement the company said: “The group wishes to send its sincere condolences to her loved ones and friends at this extremely difficult time, after the loss of a person who contributed so much to the origins and development of the company.” Mera and Mr Ortega divorced in 1986 after 20
years of marriage. She left the board of directors of Inditex in 2004 but still owned a near 7% stake in the company, according to the the newspaper El Pais.

Judge orders investigation of ex-treasurer’s ‘confiscated’ laptops
The judge handling the Luis Bárcenas slush-fund trial has given the PP party five days to hand over two computers at its Madrid-based headquarters which it would not allow the former treasurer to take with him. Secretary-general of the right-wing PP government, María Dolores del Cospedal, confirmed whilst testifying that the two laptops remained in the party’s head office on the C/ Génova in the capital, and ‘in custody’ of the cabinet. Bárcenas, who effected a 360º aboutturn recently and went from denying everything to confessing all, has said the under-the-mattress accounts which showed bribes received by the party and undeclared cash paid as wage top-ups to leading PP members, which he held on a pen-drive, were originally on the hard drives of the laptops. It was Bárcenas’ lawyer Javier Gómez de Liaño who called for judge Pablo Ruz to inspect the computers to prove that the solicitor’s client was not lying about the presence of a dual accounting system – one legal and above board and another well-hidden – since the existing PP party continues to deny this. Bárcenas, who has been in custody at Madrid’s Soto del Real prison
since the end of June, went to the National Police to file a report against PP member Alberto Durán for having allegedly entered Bárcenas’ office on the C/ Génova and ‘stolen’ two laptop computers held there. A Madrid-based judge threw out the case, which the former treasurer reported on March 1. Evidence so far points to the fact that the ex-leader of the treasury and former senator of the PP had his own office in the PP headquarters and was earning an ‘indefinite’ salary from them even after leaving his post as treasurer in 2009. Judge Ruz has also called for a greater investigation into the signature of Bárcenas’ predecessor Álvaro Lapuerta on some of the ‘black money’ accounting documents, and has called in their two former secretaries, Rosa María López Merinero and Estrella Domínguez López, to testify as witnesses, together with auditors Carlo Luca Bigmani, Benito Javier Torre de la Fuente and Antonio López de Pablo. Asturias fisherman finds giant squid nine metres long A giant squid has been caught by a fisherman in Asturias and is said to weigh over 80 kilos. It was seen floating on the surface of the sea just off Merón beach in Villaviciosa late on Friday evening, and was transported to the port of Gijón, the capital of the northern region. A team from the Coordinator of Marina Species Protection and Study (CEPESMA) has taken charge of the fish, one of the most mysterious species in the world, and it will be frozen and put on display in its ‘giant squid museum’ once a post-mortem has been carried out to ascertain the cause of death. CEPESMA’s museum in Luarca, Asturias is said to be one of the world’s biggest collections of giant squid, a species that can reach nine metres (just over 29 feet) in length, have eight
Two dead and four injured in coach crash en route to the Costa Brava
Two German tourists heading for the Costa Brava have died in a bus crash in France, emergency services report. The coach, which was German and carrying 51 teenagers from the country aged between 15 and 17 to the coast of Girona, north-eastern Spain, collided with a lorry on the A-6 motorway in the Saône-et-Loire area at around 00.25hrs this morning (Saturday). According to the French government, none of the teenagers were hurt, but both the drivers were killed outright and four adults travelling with the young tour party have been injured, two of them seriously. All four were taken to hospital in the nearby town of Mâçon, where the teens – who had come from Köln in the west of the country – were given overnight accommodation. The Regional President of Murcia, Ramon Luis Valcárcel, has told members of the Spanish press how the Paramount Pictures theme park project at Alhama de Murcia is “going well”. British woman drowns in Lanzarote
A British woman has died while swimming in the sea in Lanzarote, emergency services confirm. The 49-year-old, who has not been named pending the embassy’s contacting her next of kin and her body being identified, was pulled from the water off Famara beach in Teguise by a group of bathers who called the 112 emergency hotline. She was said to be showing symptoms of drowning and was unconscious, and her heart and lungs are believed to have stopped. Two ambulances with different equipment rushed to the scene and carried out advanced resuscitation techniques, but to no avail. The exact cause of death and the name of the victim have not yet been revealed.

El Corte Ingles in €3.8 billion debt refinancing deal
Spanish department store El Corte Ingles, the country’s largest privately held company, said on Monday it had reached a deal to refinance three quarters of its €5 billion debt. El Corte Ingles, one of Spain’s largest employers and most venerable retailers, has been hit by austerity and falling sales and has cut prices to compete with cheaper retailers, particularly in the food sector. The chain said in a statement it had agreed with lenders Santander, BBVA, CaixaBank, Sabadell, Popular and Bankia to refinance 76% of its debt, or €3.8 billion. The new loans will mature in 2021. El Corte Ingles also said assets worth €7.4 billion and annual revenues of around €15 billion would help it persuade other banks to refinance the remainder of its debt.

It was through Facebook that a German lady who runs a cat and dog shelter contacted Sue and Rod Weeding at the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre in Rojales. They agreed to take the horses into their care and the animals were brought to the Rescue Centre by a very kind Spanish man who had a horse trailer. They arrived at midnight.

“It was fortunate that these two horses were left outside to fend for themselves” said Sue Weeding co founder of the EHCRC. “ If they had been abandoned out of sight, locked away in a disused out building or shed, which is the usual scenario, they may never have been found. It is fantastic that that these local Spanish people did their best to save these horses and ask for help using a social media website”. Both horses are about seven years old and look to have been overworked and had a very hard life. They have been named Leo and Louie. Louie is partially blind in his left eye due we think to a blow and also and has several facial scars and a hole through the skin of his right nostril. Leo has damaged tendons normally caused by over work on hard ground. Both horses are being treated for their injuries and are now in safe hands. If you would like to come and visit them and meet all our other horses, ponies and donkeys on one of our Sunday open days. We are open from 1 pm. LETTING YOUR PASSPORT EXPIRE CAN COST MORE THAN YOU THINK
809 Area Code - We actually received a call last week from the 809 area code. The woman said ‘Hey, this is Karen. Sorry I missed you- get back to us quickly. I have something important to tell you.’ Then she repeated a phone number beginning with 809. We did not respond. Then this week, we received the following e-mail: Do Not DIAL AREA CODE 809, 284, AND 876 from the UK . U.S. or Canada . This one is being distributed all over the US & UK ... This is pretty scary, especially given the way they try to get you to call. Be sure you read this and pass it on.They get you to call by telling you that it is information about a family member who has been ill or to tell you someone has been arrested, died, or to let you know you have won a wonderful prize, etc.. In each case, you are told to call the 809 number right away. Since there are so many new area codes these days, people unknowingly return these calls. If you call from the UK . U.S or Canada , you will apparently be charged a minimum of £1850 per-minute. And you’ll also get a long recorded message. The point is, they will try to keep you on the phone as long as possible to increase the charges. WHY IT WORKS: The 809 area code is located in the Dominican Republic. The charges afterwards can become a real nightmare. That’s because you did actually make the call. If you complain, both your local phone company and your long distance carrier will not want to get involved and will most likely tell you that they are simply providing the billing for the foreign company. You’ll end up dealing with a foreign company that argues they have done nothing wrong.
The number of emergency passports issued by British Consulates in Spain rose 11% last year to a total of 6005 – more than a fifth (22%) of the Foreign Office world total. The increase has triggered the British Embassy to warn British expats to take care of their passports, check the expiry date and renew them in good time. In May alone this year[1] 493 emergency passports were issued to British nationals in Spain, including 280 as a result of theft (mainly bag theft), car break-ins, burglary and pickpocketing. Of the 213 emergency passports issued for other reasons, 14% were because full passports had expired. Expatriates should check when their passports are due to expire and make a diary note to renew them up to nine months earlier, says Will Middleton, new Consular Regional Director for Spain. “Living overseas, it can be easy to think that you don’t need your passport or to forget to renew it. “But if you need to travel at short notice, getting an emergency passport is both costly - currently 116 euros - and time-consuming, which can add further to what may already be a stressful situation. And you will still need to renew your full passport when you get back.” Many people fear that by renewing a passport before it expires they will ‘lose out’ on validity they have paid for. In fact any remaining validity on your existing passport (up to a total of nine months) will be added to the new one. Circumstances in which British expatriates can find themselves needing emergency passports vary from the death or serious illness of a loved one through to job opportunities put at risk - like the resident who was offered an interview in Germany only to discover his passport had expired. Others have been forced to cancel holidays of a lifetime for lack of a valid passport. One customer, who had already suffered five lost or stolen passports over the years and received a warning from the Passport Service, decided to keep the latest one safe by storing it in the freezer. Unfortunately it got wet, so he had to get yet another emergency one. Applying for a new passport is simple: download the application form and guidance notes from www.gov.uk/overseas-passports, complete them at home and send them off with your photographs. A new passport generally takes a minimum of four weeks from when the application is received.

Some years ago José was the envy of his community, having married the local beauty, who subsequently, in due time presented him with their first son. But then his lovely wife began staying out late and returning with expensive perfumes, and his neighbours started nudging each other and whispering whenever he passed, so when their second child, a daughter, was born, poor José had many anxieties. But twelve months later, one glance at the newly-born second son confirmed his worst fears – the child was certainly not his, and his wife, barely hiding her disdain, left him for a string of lovers. Friends urged José to divorce and start again, and were astounded when he kept affirming his love for her despite her behaviour, and time and again he rescued her and brought her back home when affairs went sour, or she’d been left in the gutter beaten and humiliated. Time and again he cleared her debts and cared for her; and time and again she threw that care in his face and left again once she’d recovered her looks and found another opportunity. But eventually of course she really did hit rock bottom, and after several years as a prostitute, was sold by her master to a slave-trader when once he realised that no-one was prepared to pay for her services any more. But far from saying “Good riddance” or “Serves her right” as most of us would probably have done, José truly grieved for her, and placed a bid at the subsequent slave auction high enough to ensure he bought her back. Now his slave, José released her, restored her to the position of wife and formally adopted her illegitimate children. Now that, I’d say, really is love. And this saga is no modern fictional fantasy, but the true story of Hosea, an Old Testament Prophet who had to learn from his experiences how God feels about us; loving us even more than Hosea loved his wife, forgiving our numerous infidelities and ultimately buying our freedom with Christ’s death. Charity thieves return loot in change of heart
Thieves who stole computers and valuables from a charity for victims of sexual violence have had a change of heart and returned the goods. They broke into the offices of the Sexual Assault Services Centre in San Bernadino County, California one evening after immobilising the burglar alarm and crawling on the floor to evade motion detectors. When centre director Candy Stallings arrived after being contacted by police she discovered the office had been ransacked and computer equipment was missing. “Our office is really secure,” she told CBS Los Angeles. “We have the best locks but they still managed to find a way in.” However later that day police called her to say the thieves had returned all of the stolen items. “All my stuff was in front of the door,” she said. “There was a shopping cart, and there were the PCs that were taken and the laptop; everything was there.” When she opened the laptop, she discovered a hand written note, apologising for stealing the equipment. “We had no idea what we were takeing (sic),” it read. “Here your (sic) stuff back. We hope that you guys can continue to make a difference in peoples (sic) live. God bless.” “We were all pretty shocked,” said Ms Stallings. “You’ve got to be kidding me. I was in disbelief. I got chills. I got very emotional.” “This is the first time in my career I have seen the return of stolen items,” San Bernardino Police Lt Paul Williams said. “It appears the guilt of taking the property caused the return of the items.”

I understand that if I sell my property I needtothink about the following expenses: solicitors fee, capital gains tax and plusvalía tax. What is plusvalía tax , and how is it calculated? A . Up to recently this was a small tax when you sold or inherited , but now it can be a high amount and needs to be considered before the transaction. It is charged on the transfer of ownership of a property by sale, inheritance etc. . This tax is a local tax charged by each municipality on the increase in value of Urban land in its own district land and is distinct from Capital Gains Tax. It is important to realize that the tax is charged on land alone, not on the buildings that may stand on the land. The rates of tax are set by each municipality and can vary widely between neighbouring municipalities.The tax is based on the increase in the official, that is to say the “Catastral”, value of the land which a property occupies. This is the same value that is used to set your local property tax or “IBI” and can be found on the bill for your “IBI” issued by your local ayuntamiento each year and is shown as the “valor del suelo”.The actual price at which a property changes hands, or the value attributed to it if is the subject of a gift or inheritance is irrelevant. Calculation: The Plusvalia is calculated as a function of the catastral value of the land and the number of years of ownership (up to a maximum of 20 years). The higher the catastral value and the number of years of ownership, the higher the tax. Plusvalia tax = Catastral value of the land x Yearly percentage of value’s increase x Number of years of ownership x Tax rate The yearly percentage of value’s increase and the tax rate are fixed by the Town Halls.They are established locally. Up to now, when a Town Hall had updated the catastral values, usually with really high increases of the values compared to the existing ones, article 107.3 of the Law had established that on the following five years after the revision of the values, the Town Halls had to apply a deduction of 40 to 60 % to the catastral value. If a Town Hall made not contemplation of this rule teh law established an automatic deduction of 60%. However new Law passed in 2012 has changed that situation allowing the Town Halls to eliminate
those deductions, which is why a loto of people are suddenly paying much higher rates and find themselves with an unfairly high plusvalíaa tax when they sell. On a sale of a property it is the responsibility of the seller to pay the tax, but if the seller fails to pay this responsibility may be passed to the buyer, who would then have to recuperate the money form this seller. If the property is being inherited or is the subject of some other type of gift it is the beneficiary or recipient of the property who is liable to pay the tax. Certain transactions are exempt from the Plusvalia Tax, the main ones which are likely to affect the general public are the transfer of property between spouses who are divorcing, or to children to comply with Court judgments, and “aportaciones” or transfers to companies in which spouses are the only shareholders which may be used for tax planning. The amount of the tax that will be charged on a transaction will depend firstly on the Catastral value of the land which the property occupies, and secondly on the length of time since it last changed hands. If you are selling an individual house which stands on a large plot which you have owned for a considerable length of time the amount of the Plusvalia Tax could be many thousands of Euros. On the other hand, as the tax is charged on the value of land alone, the amount of Plusvalia Tax charged on a flat in a block which you have not owned for very long the tax may be quite modest. For those of you who are considering rearranging your financial affairs to take advantage of tax planning schemes, the amount of Plusvalia tax that may be due is one of a number of elements, which include the Notary and other fees that may be payable, which you need to consider when balancing the costs and benefits of these schemes. Depending on the amount of Plusvalia, it may be cheaper to make a gift of the property rather than enter into more complex arrangements with higher Notary and other fees. The time for paying the Plusvalia Tax is within 30 days of a sale or gift between living people, or 6 months of the date of death on an inheritance. Your town hall can advise you of the amount of Plusvalia that may be payable on a transaction involving your property, or in many cases it is possible to obtain the calculation “on line”, but as I always write in concluding these articles, if in doubt take professional advice.

The Regional President of Murcia, Ramón Luis Valcárcel, commented last week how the process to appoint a new concessionaire at Corvera International Airport is due to begin “Immediately”, and that it will be finalised “Before the end of the year” in order that the facility will be fully operational “In the early months of 2014”.
According to 20minutos, upon being asked if Aeromur were to be considered as potential managers of the airport, President Valcarcel explained that “Providing they can resolve their issues, as the competition is open to all who qualify”. It can perhaps only be assumed that this new was the ‘Positive Statement’ concerning Corvera Airport, which Murcia’s Minister of Public Works and Planning, Antonio Sevilla, promised last month. Mobile phone calls in Spain ‘fourth most expensive’ in the EU
Spain charges the fourth-highest tariffs per minute for calls made from mobile phones in the European Union, at an average of 13.3 cents per minute, research claims. According to the European Commission (EC), prices between the 28 member States vary by as much as 774 per cent – from 14.7 cents per minute in The Netherlands to 1.9 cents per minute in Lithuania. And vice-president of the Commission Neelie Kroes says there is no relation whatsoever between price, quality of service or level of buying power in customers. After The Netherlands, Luxembourg and Belgium are the most expensive countries in the EU to make a telephone call, at
an average of 14.6 and 13.8 cents respectively, with Spain fourth. Based upon mobile-to-mobile calls, prices per minute range from 12.7 cents in France and 9.7 cents in the UK to 8.8 cents in Germany and 6.9 cents in Italy. International calls on a mobile are cheaper in Spain at an average of 65 cents per minute than in Belgium, where customers spend 97 cents, or Germany at 75 cents, whilst in the UK calling a number abroad on a mobile costs an eye-watering 1.19 euros. France, Italy and Hungary charge just 35 cents per minute for an overseas call from a mobile phone. Ms Kroes says telecommunications customers are ‘not benefiting from the common European market’ the
way they should do, with uniform prices, and adds that it is ‘essential’ for the EU to develop this in order to ensure ‘a truly connected continent’. She reveals that there is little difference in the cost of basic goods between the 28 member States, with a litre of milk averaging at between 69 and 99 cents in any of the countries, a difference of around 43 per cent. And despite the vast disparities in calling costs from country to country, the price of buying an iPad only varies by around 11 per cent within the EU, Ms Kroes reveals. She intends to put forward her findings and a package aimed at consolidating a single telecommunications market at a Commission meeting in September.

POOLSIDE ENTERTAINMENT FOR THE RBL BY TAABS The Orihuela Costa Branch of the Royal British Legion met at the Olimpia Restaurant, Mil Palmeras last Thursday evening to say farewell to one of its founder members, Colin Middleton, who is now spending rather more of his retirement in UK. As such, Colin, who has been a committee member since the branch was originally established back in 2008, having served as Vice Chairman, Welfare Chairman, Treasurer and Merchandising Secretary, has finally transferred his membership back to England. However, as he will still be holidaying on the Costa Blanca, Colin will no doubt retain his close links with the Orihuela Costa for which he has been such an important part. The photograph shows Chairman, Keith Carter, presenting a small gift to Colin on behalf of the Branch Membership. After the business part of the meeting was completed the members retired poolside where they were entertained by TAABS, the Torrevieja Association of Amateur Balladeers Singers, with Cathy Carson. The group are always well received at the Olimpia and as they sang many old favourites the audience was increased by a large number of holidaymakers who were eating or drinking at the venue. As the show was brought to its conclusion a surprise presentation was made to the RBL, a small Teddy Bear, which was recently handed in a local charity shop operated on behalf of the Butterfly Children. The bear was unusual in that it bore the RBL badge and logo on it’s chest so the gift was felt to be most appropriate. TAABS have been performing and raising money for a variety of charities in the area for over a decade. Around fifty kilometres south-east of Zaragoza lies the old village of Belchite. The ruins of this small town remain as an untouched and undisturbed monument to what was one of the bloodiest battles of Spanish history. During the Spanish Civil War, from the 24th of August through to the 7th of September, 1937, the ruthless Battle of Belchite took place between the Nationalist (Fascist) and Republican (Communist) forces. When the Republicans had failed in their attempt to conquer Zaragoza, they then became focused on conquering Belchite. The Nationalist forces then responded with fierce resistance against this coup, incorporating around seven thousand defenders, who held the town until being ultimately defeated by the Republicans on September 7th. The two week long conflict resulted in over six thousand deaths of both soldiers and local civilians, which was described as having formed a sickly wall of corpses, burning in the harsh summer heat. The village itself, in this short space of time, transformed from a vibrant and brightly coloured town, to a graveyard of smoke, rubble and destroyed lives, homes, monuments and buildings. When the Civil War ended in 1939, Spain’s leader at the time, General Franco, ordered that the Republicans return to Belchite and rebuild a new town. From this decree of Franco’s, the village is now comprised of two parts; the old village and the new village. An eerie and haunting essence lingers in the old town, and various stories circulate about ghosts and supposed screams at night of the people that died in it. Some of the buildings in Belchite still show visible bullets holes on the walls; homes still show traces of faded wall patterns, decoration and colour after being bombed; and destroyed cars with tattered leather seats still remain. This confronting visual comparison between the new and old villages is a powerful and stark reminder of the reality and ugliness of the Spanish Civil War. It exemplifies the atrocity that political systems can provoke amongst humanity, and the division of people within their own nation. Alongside this, it is a commemoration to the many victims of this devastation. really easy ice cream Nothing says summer like a crisp cone filled with the creamiest of ice creams. And for those without an ice-cream maker these recipes are perfect... Easy lemon curd ripple 500g carton of fresh custard 1tbsp liquid glucose Juice and zest of 2 lemons 200ml/7fl oz double cream, lightly whipped 300g jar lemon curd Heat custard and liquid glucose in a pan until glucose has dissolved. Stir in lemon juice and zest, then put to one side to cool. Fold cream into cooled custard mixture, transfer to a freezerproof container and put in freezer for 4-5 hours or overnight until frozen. Remove ice cream and add to bowl of a food mixer (or use a hand mixer). When soft enough, mix until well churned, then stir through lemon curd (not taking it all through) so you have swirls. Return to freezer until solid. Remove from freezer a little while before serving to allow it to soften.
Easy cookie sandwich 2 eggs, separated 50g/2oz caster sugar 300ml/10fl oz double cream, lightly whipped 2 vanilla pods, sliced lengthways 16 choc chip cookies First, whisk egg whites until they are stiff, then add sugar a little at a time, whisking as you go. Mixture should be stiff and glossy (as when making meringue). Whisk egg yolks until combined, then scape in vanilla seeds and whisk again to incorporate. Gently fold ready-whipped cream into egg-white mixture, then fold egg yolk in a little at a time, making sure it’s well combined before next addition. Pour ice cream into a freezerproof container and put in freezer for 4-5 hrs or until frozen solid. To serve, sandwich a scoop between choc chip cookies and serve immediately.
strawberry and clotted cream 2 eggs ~ 125g/4oz caster sugar 500ml carton of clotted cream 200ml/7fl oz full fat milk 200g pack of strawberries, hulled & roughly chopped Add eggs to bowl of a food mixer and whisk until well combined and frothy. Slowly tip in sugar and whisk for a further 3 mins. Stir through clotted cream and milk and continue to whisk. Pour mixture into a large freezerproof container (a metal one is good), or use two. Put into freezer for about 4 hrs, until frozen. Remove, allow mixture to soften enough to transfer back to the food mixer and whisk until well churned and soft. Pour back into containers and freeze again. While that’s freezing, blitz strawberries in a food processor and put to one side. Remove ice cream and let it soften slightly, then whisk again, adding strawberry and mixing until all combined. Put back in freezer for 3-4 hrs. Remove from freezer 5-10 mins to soften before serving
double ginger 5 egg yolks 175g/6oz unrefined caster sugar 2tsp vanilla extract 400ml/13½fl oz full-fat milk 500ml carton of double cream 1tbsp ginger syrup (taken from jar of stem ginger) 6 balls of stem ginger, finely chopped plus a few extra slivers for serving About 4-5 pieces of crystallised ginger, finely chopped About 6-8 amaretto biscuits, for serving Whisk egg yolks and sugar together until well beaten, using a hand whisk. Put to one side. Heat milk in a pan to just under boiling, stirring as you go. Pour milk into egg mixture, whisk, then pour it back into a clean pan along with vanilla extract. Heat very gently, stirring continually (use a balloon whisk to eliminate any lumps). Simmer on low until custard mixture thickens, but don’t let it boil. Remove from heat and whisk in cream. Now stir in ginger juice and pour into a freezerproof container, leave to cool, sit it in freezer for about 3 hrs. Remove, when softened a little, scoop into a large bowl, add ginger pieces and whisk until blended (reserve a few pieces of stem ginger and stir through if you want a little texture). Return ice cream to container, freeze and repeat process twice more. Serve as scoops, topped with stem ginger slivers and crushed amaretto biscuits.

Coca-Cola has launched an advertisement campaign to defend the use of sweeteners in their diet soda. The advertisement is the next phase of a campaign to push back at critics who blame Coca-Cola’s products for the U.S’s everrising obesity rates. The Diet Coke ad, which features two smiling women
drinking the soda, comes shortly after Coca-Cola reported a drop in sales. In this year’s second quarter, Coca-Cola Co. reported a four per cent loss in the amount of soda sold in North America, with Diet Coke taking the worst hit. In 2012 sales volume for Coke fell one per cent, while Diet Coke fell 3 per
cent. Rivalling cola brand Pepsi fell 3.4 per cent, while Diet Pepsi fell 6.2 per cent. The decline in sales of fizzy drinks has been a long-running trend in the U.S. following reports of negative effects on health and several studies on possible hazards of consuming artificial sweeteners. The advertisement highlights how diet soda can help people manage their weight and stresses the scientific evidence showing the safety of aspartame. It features a picture of two women under the heading ‘Quality products you can always feel good about,’ with several paragraphs of text underneath. ‘Time and again, these lowand no-calorie sweeteners have shown to be safe, high-quality alternatives to sugar,’ it states. ‘Coke is trying to get out front and proactively defend these diet sweeteners,’ said John Sicher, editor of Beverage Digest, which tracks the industry. The declines come even though the Food and Drug Administration says aspartame may be safely used in foods as a sweetener, and the ingredient can be found in a wide array of other type of drinks and foods.

Pepsi flavored Cheetos exist...That’s right, you read correctly. Pepsi-flavored Cheetos are a thing. But they are only on-sale in Japan. Officially named ‘Pepsi Shuwa Shuwa,’ the snacks will not be sold in the US, according to a Frito-Lay spokesperson. According to a report by Mail Online, reactions online have ranged from amusement and disgust to one person professing their love for the strange snack. In a country known for having strange food, the cola flavored snacks named after the sound of carbonation are getting mixed reviews. The nouveau Cheetos actually smell like Pepsi, according to multiple online reviews, and reveal what a naked Cheeto would like if stripped of all its cheese. If pictures are worth a thousand words, the look on the face of one taste-tester on YouTube was priceless. ‘Oh, that’s so weird,’ the reviewer immediately said with a confused look on his face as he reached back into the bag for a second helping, almost in disbelief of what he was eating. Explaining the texture is ‘basically a Cheeto,’ the disappointed snack enthusiast said ‘I’m not gonna say it tastes good.’ Laughing incredulously, he described a carbonation sensation on the tongue similar to Pop-Rocks ‘you can feel the carbonation as you’re eating the corn snacks, it’s really weird.’ Calling the Frito Lay-Pepsi collaboration ‘interesting,’ the reviewer says that soda-flavored Cheetos are considered ‘crazy’ even by most of his colleagues. Retailing for only a few hundred yen in Japan, the snacks can be bought on eBay for varying prices ranging all the way up to almost $50, as part of an assortment of other weird snacks. Despite early reports the snacks might make their way to the US, a Frito –Lay spokesperson immediately shot down the idea. ‘The answer is no,’ the spokesperson told the Los Angeles Times.

Early to mid-August: Festa Major de Gràcia, Catalonia: All year long, the residents of Gràcia work on elaborate decorations with themes such as marine life, the solar system, or even local politics, to hang in the streets. By day, long trestle tables are set up for communal lunches and board games; at night, thousands invade the tiny streets for outdoor concerts, dances, and general revelry.
August 28: La Tomatina, Buñol, west of Valencia: This is the world renowned, absolutely crazy, tomato flinging, juice-spraying five-day festival held on the last Wednesday of August. Thousands of joyful revelers use truckloads of overripe tomatoes as missiles. Bring goggles and a change of clothes.

Sep 7 – 8: Fiestas de la Mare de Deu de la Salut in Algemesí, Valencia: The main local festival in Algemesí dates back to the Middle Ages and has been awarded the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage designation. Theatre, dance and music are part of the celebrations and more than 1,400 people take part in the main parade. The festival also features giants representing King James I of Aragon and his wife as part of the “Volta General”, which also includes numerous biblical characters. Sep 20 – 28: San Sebastián International Film Festival, San Sebastián: The premier film festival of Spain takes place in the Basque capital, often at several different theaters. Retrospectives are frequently featured, and weeklong screenings are held. Sep 24: Fiesta De La Mercé, Barcelona: This celebration honors Our Lady of Mercy (La Mercè), the city’s patron saint. Free music concerts, from traditional to contemporary, are held in the plazas (particularly Plaça de Catalunya and Plaça Sant Jaume), and figures from folklore such as the gigants (giants) and cap grosses (fatheads) take to the streets. People come out to perform the sardana (the traditional Catalan dance) and to watch the nail-biting castellers (human towers). Firework displays light up the night, and the hairraising correfoc, a parade of firework-brandishing “devils” and dragons, is the grand finale. Oct 12: El Día de la Hispanidad or Columbus Day), throughout Spain - A national holiday of Spain that is celebrated on October 12, commemorating the exact date that Christopher Columbus first set foot in the Americas. A special parade is held in la Plaza de Colon, in Madrid, led by the Spanish military and followed by the King and the Royal Family. A wide array of other authorities, from foreign diplomats positioned in Spain to the presidents of the autonomous governments, are invited to attend this parade. The Spanish Armed forces also fly through the air doing aerobatics with red and yellow smoke drawing images in for the crowd to see.

I own 10 handbags, a hoard which I have accumulated over the years – handbags hardly ever wear out, so some of them are old and faithful servants. However, none of them are 100% fit for purpose; all of them suffer from Selective Gravity and the Clump Phenomenon. Selective Gravity means that whichever object I want, regardless of weight or packing order, will be at the bottom. The Clump Phenomenon is when attempts to remove anything from the bag are foiled by everything clumping together in an all-or-nothing gesture of solidarity. Having located my purse at the bottom of my bag I have to wrestle it to the top past my glasses, which will wrap their arms around it in a passionate attempt to prevent it from leaving the safety of the handbag. To avoid breaking the arms off the glasses I take them out and hold them in my hand, but then the fan comes over all insecure and feels it can’t be left on its own so it spreads itself wide, preventing anything from getting past it and into the open. viewpoint alqueria - Paco defrocked? Now I am holding the bag, the glasses and the fan, but I have had to momentarily let go of the purse. However, it’s still there, in sight near the top, so I grab
it. As it gets to the lip of the bag I notice that my diary has managed to lodge itself in the fold of the purse, and will fall out onto the floor as soon as the purse sees the light of day. Shaking the purse does no good, so I have to relinquish my hold, forcibly extract the diary, which is doing its best to climb in with the folding money, stuff it back into the bag, and go after the purse again. However, the purse has made good its escape, and is now underneath the electronic translator. As I try to wrestle the purse past it the mobile joins in, bobbing about in an enthusiastic ‘Pick me! Pick me!’ kind of manner, though I know that if anyone were trying to call me it would be nowhere to be found until too late. At this point I’ve had enough. I put the bag down and systematically unpack it until I get to the purse, which of course is the last object in my grasp. Now all I have to do is pack the whole lot back up again under the concentrated gaze of the whole queue and the check-out girl in Mercadona! If only there were an Anti-gravitational Bag, where everything would stay put…Will someone please invent one?
Spicing Up a Jittery Day
Having read the reports of the two young British women who were recently the subjects of an acid attack on the island of Zanzibar, it brought back mixed memories of our own brief visit some years ago. We had a trip planned that encompassed several locations in the Indian Ocean and an Intel Officer friend stationed at the US air base in Lakenheath, offered to obtain the intelligence low-down on our various ports of call. No problems were envisaged for the Seychelles; Comoros Island and Madagascar, but in the case of Zanzibar, the US State Department was warning all of its citizens to ‘Be cautious’. This was of course worrying, but our friend assured us that it was just a sensible precaution that fell short of actually advising their people not to travel to that destination and was a response to the growing Muslim fundamentalist threat generally. In fact our visit was planned for March 2001 – just six months before all our lives and perceptions changed with the World Trade Centre outrage. As we waited for the tender to take us to shore, the scene was like gazing through a window on the past: ancient looking red tile roofed buildings lined the waterfront, many in the Arabic and colonial styles with the majority looking age wearied and in need of a few coats of Dulux
emulsion. In the harbour was a battered old freighter, taking on a cargo of fruit or spices, or whatever else it is that Zanzibar exports and dozens of Arab type dhows skimmed across the waters. The larger ones appeared to be traders whilst others were obviously fishing vessels, some off-loading their catches onto the beach, others heading out to sea or anchored up, with their crews inspecting nets. It was a scene from another age. Surely there could be nothing threatening here. But there did indeed seem to be a brooding atmosphere in the town, although it may simply have been imagination brought on by that note of caution passed to us by our friend. We nervously browsed the market and came away with a charming carved mahogany hippo who still resides on our coffee table, and true to form I was dragged gibbering into a jewellers specialising in Tanzanite items. The atmosphere was more relaxed after we left town in a beat up old bus - whose only air conditioning was several broken windows - for a visit to a spice farm, which in fact turned out to be a patch of jungle

where a variety of spices had been planted and cultivated. At the side of the road was a row of stalls displaying a huge range of exotic spices and where we could obviously purchase items once we had finished the tour. Our escort was Mohammed, a teacher, who supplemented his meagre wage by moonlighting as a tour guide. His English had been heavily influenced it seemed, by past clients who had been firm fans of the TV series, Only Fools and Horses, because on arriving at our stop he announced: “We are here – lovely jubbly.” Our first stop in the jungle was beside a large bushy plant with long broad leaves “Who knows what is this?” he asked. “Cardamom”, I offered up, saying the first name that came into my head. “Correct plonker” he announced. “And it is very good LAX-A-TEEV”. He was obviously very proud of that word. “That’s something we don’t need in our house” I announced to the assembled group, which obviously scored a direct hit on our guide’s funny bone, because he roared with laughter and slapped his thigh
repeatedly like a panto principal boy. “Dip stick!” he howled, before dropping to his haunches, literally doubled up in hysterical mirth. I didn’t think my remark had been that funny, but the rest of us joined in anyway. It must be a Zanzibarian thing, I remember thinking. The young children of the various stall holders were lined up having waited patiently for our return. There was no begging, no rowdy behaviour, just large dark eyes inspecting us with fascination as we perused the stalls that displayed the goodies we had just viewed in their natural surroundings. Then it was time to break out the pens and colouring books we had been advised to take with us, and with the parents approval, we handed them out along with sweets to those poor but well turned out and polite kids. Each gently taking what we offered and with a quiet thank you and delighted looks on their faces, they proudly showed off these simple gifts to their parents. The whole experience was one of confused impressions, from light hearted banter to a strange uneasiness, and in view of recent events, not one that we would be anxious to repeat.

With the realisation that the travellers adopted him as the Messiah and leader of their sect came understanding. Paco now knew they were saying ‘there goes that cult’ and not what he first thought they had said. He felt uncomfortable with this new found status. Those more mercenary than Paco would have ‘milked’ the situation, asked for donations, looked for a gift in the wills of the faithful, but it just worried Paco. It was the fact that these Travellers from Órgiva had invaded his reality which so concerned Paco. Paco’s imaginary five foot rodent which the folk of Alqueria thought was more substantial in the mind of Paco was in fact invisible to him as well. His insanity was all veneer, a veneer perfected over many years. To be free one needs space, something at a premium in the over organised world of today. Paco understood this and had set about making elbow room for himself. Paco suffered from a self-induced balanced type of insanity. Not daft enough to be committed but sufficiently balmy to be tolerated and sheltered by the community as is the Spanish custom. The last thing Paco wanted was the Travellers legitimising his self-induced and fanciful madness. They had to be discouraged. He had to defrock himself. The solution was a simple one. The Travellers enjoyed the more hedonistic side of life. They enjoyed smoking substances that made their eyes itch, drinking liquor that numbed their senses and best of all they enjoyed each other. It was a simple matter for Paco to address them and issue a proclamation. “The Children of the Divine Paco will lead a pure existence devoid of all stimulants and will renounce the pleasures of the flesh.” The Travellers disappeared quicker than a prime minister’s promise. Manuela didn’t like this turn of events. To the now departed Travellers Manuela was the ‘She Devil’, she was evil, she was depravity personified, she was comforted by this. Now she had to rebuild, to re-establish her credentials. Paco on the other hand was well satisfied with his evening’s work. He was once more the same loopy old Paco who was tolerated by the villagers. The same loopy old Paco who could do as he wanted when he wanted. He smiled as he trotted from the Plaza back to the security of his little house. As he walked, so summer storm clouds gathered over the Sierra. The black anvil clouds cast heavy shadows over Alqueria. With a brilliant flash followed by almost instantaneous thunder Paco was flat on his back, struck by lightning. Twitching and hair smouldering he staggered to his feet. Loco Paco stared into the vastness of the heavens, it was then he knew the truth. He was the Messiah.

An Interesting Truth
...or How to get More Bang for your Buck!
Last week we looked at the way that the printer industry is lying to you, Extorting huge amounts of money from you and generally laughing at you all the way to the bank! Everyone who works with Inkjet type printers will be either spending or making a lot of money. Today, my task is to show you alternatives to buying EXTREMELY overpriced original cartridges. But first lets generate a little fear! Some printer manufacturers set up their cartridges to interact with the printer, preventing operation when the ink level is low, or when the cartridge has been refilled. One researcher with the magazine “Which?” overrode such an interlocked system and found that in one case he could print up to 38% more good quality pages, after the chip stated that the cartridge was empty. In the United Kingdom, in 2003, the cost of ink has been the subject of an Office of Fair Trading investigation, as Which? magazine has accused manufacturers of a lack of transparency about the price of ink and called for an industry standard for measuring ink cartridge performance. Which? stated that colour HP cartridges cost over seven times more per millilitre than 1985 Dom Perignon champagne. To further highlight the highway robbery here is some statistics (remembering that there are ‘lies, damn lies and statistics’!). Coloured inks can cost 25+€ for a 6.5ml cartridge. That equates to 3896.15€ per litre, Black Ink can cost 17€ for a single 4.5ml cartridge – are you sitting down? That is 3833.33€ per litre! And you though fuel was expensive at 1.40€ per litre was expensive. Now for some solutions! The first option is rather obvious. Refill! It is possible to buy the correct ink and a set of tools, plugs and injectors, to refill your ink cartridges. The tools are generally a ‘one off’ payment and can be re-used many times, in many cartridges, before they wear out. It is cheaper to buy a refill kit that will refill a cartridge up to 10 times, than the cost of a single replacement ‘original’ cartridge! The second option is using a continuous ink system whereby you just have tanks that you can fill without removing them from the printer. But as I’m a louse. I will go into these next week! The Last Dance and Other Stories by Victoria Hislop They stood close, smiling into each other’s eyes, drowning in the pleasure of seeing each other again. For a few brief minutes they were oblivious to where they were and their reasons for being in these anonymous surroundings that could have been anywhere in the world Victoria Hislop became an instant success with her debut novel The Island. You may have also read The Thread or The Return? If you are looking for the same quality but in smaller doses I can recommend this short story collection inspired by her love of Greece, giving us some insight into typical Greek customs and traditions, the reality not the fantasy. The Last Dance is full of life’s ironies and sad. The setting is Athens for the lavish wedding of Theodoris and Nefeli. Ironically, businesses had closed because of the recession although weddings were as extravagant as ever. No expense spared. Everyone seemed to be getting married and Hislop writes about nuptial gridlock which destroys the whole romantic notion of love and marriage. A posh international hotel is where the reception is held. 600 guests were invited for a 5 course meal with miniature, designer-type portions which resembled a work of art rather than anything substantial. Theodoris’ father, uncomfortable, looked out of place. He was a village man, a fisherman from Milton, uneducated, not a successful or rich businessman. He had never left his village before now. His secret wish was for his son to have married an island girl and they would be celebrating with a whole sheep and not a piece of lamb the size of a biscuit . An interesting balance between showiness and modesty. Every bride in the fairy story was a beauty and every groom a prince and around the happy couple there always shone a halo of light. Nefeli was sweet enough and adored Theodoris but it was more of a convenient union. It seems he wasn’t in love with her. Theodoris seemed to be as uncomfortable as his father and he excuses himself feeling a bit overwhelmed by the fuss. Three other wedding receptions are also being held and they are playing his song, the one he associated with Agapi, the love of his life: S’agapo yiati eisai oraia I love you ‘cause you’re beautiful It was a lightning strike, a coup de foudre, keravnovolos erotas, the most powerful feeling either had ever experienced. When they separated he was gripped by sadness. He believed that love was what mattered and the break-up shattered his dreams of a happy ever after.

A stark contrast in social groupings and distribution of wealth. Irini felt a gulf open up between her godmother and herself. Fotis, the beautiful boy lived in an apartment in a crumbling block, with yellowing walls in a state of squalor. The scent of grubbiness did not distress Irini or the dark paintwork. Surprisingly, she felt less claustrophobic than her bland if airy home. Their relationship is passionate. She kept returning to his dark apartment and his unyielding bed. Unlike The Last Dance this relationship was never going to end in marriage. Irini comes to her senses in the nick of time when she realises the truth about lover boy and it quells all that passion within her. For all those weeks she had only seen their perfection but now she saw them twisted by an all-consuming rage and noticed again the devilish look she had seen in the street that night. And in that moment the flame went out. Even the memory of it chilled her, right to the heart. Ten very different yet wonderful stories to enjoy reading. You won’t be disappointed. Pompeii had a cleverly designed piped water system which fed 25 street fountains, private houses, businesses and public baths. In time of drought the water would first be turned off at the baths then the houses and finally businesses leaving the street fountains to supply the populace.
Although the earthquake was a portent of much worse to come perhaps it was Nero’s thinking that swayed most locals to stay on as the Romans were a highly superstitious bunch. Rebuilding work started in earnest and evidence of this can still be seen in what remains there today. The area suffered regular but smaller quakes leading up to the cataclysmic event 17 years later that’s now made Pompeii infamous.
As the magma chamber lost its power the huge columns of debris started to fall causing pyroclastic surges of up to 100 km/h of superheated gas and pulverised rock to rush down the mountain sides. Pompeii was in the way of these surges and the 250C gases instantaneously burnt the inhabitant’s lungs and as they died all their muscles contracted so they dropped and lay in foetal positions which are how we see them preserved today. The eruption left Pompeii and the surrounding area buried under up to 80 feet of ash. It was custom to rebuild after a disaster but the damage was so complete that the area was never repopulated.
Pompeii was a hedonistic tourist resort with as many as 20,000 inhabitants. The surrounding countryside was thronged with villas belonging to Roman elite. In 62AD a powerful earthquake struck the town damaging every building and crippling the water supply. The Emperor Nero was performing in a nearby theatre and as he left the building it collapsed after him. Nero looked upon this as

In autumn 79AD Vesuvius erupted, shooting ash, rocks and poisonous gases high into the sky, the eruption was seen from hundreds of kilometres away. A fine cloud of ash rained down from the sky. as much as six inches (15cm) an hour. I remember in my school days being taught that people suffocated on the ash in their sleep. This is now known to be incorrect as their cause of death was altogether

for the times. In 1738 when digging the foundations for a new palace the remains were discovered again and work continued up until a few years ago when the funds dried up. It’s a UNESCO World heritage site but sadly three times in the last 15 years has this certification been called into doubt as currently the place is suffering severe degradation. Three years ago the so called ‘House of the Gladiators’ collapsed and currently less than a third of the buildings that visitors could see in the 1960s are open to the public. It’s estimated that over 300 million Euros are needed to further preserve the site. Mind you with Vesuvius normally erupting every 20 years or so and the last eruption being in 1944 it’s well overdue so perhaps it will soon get covered over again.

Lime Bar Golf Society Los Altos, Orihuela Costa The golf societies venue for the 14th August 2013 was held at the Mar Menor Golf Course. About twenty-six players took place in very hot sunshine, the course was in good condition considering the continuous dry weather. The competition was the ‘The Lime Bar Open’ played in Stroke Play format and the scores recorded are as follows. Nearest the Pin on the 2nd Hole (par 3) was Tony Jones. Nearest the Pin on the 11th hole (par 4) in two shots was Dave Latham. Nearest the pin on the 17th hole (par 3) was Dave Cahill. Best guest was Derek Mountfield

For this month’s meeting a group of 18 players visited the established course at Alicante on the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. The course was in excellent condition and weather was beautiful and ideal for good scoring. Today we played an individual stableford plus a team event with 2 scores from 4 to count. The winning team was Wayne Matthews, Joe Goble, Bob Smith and Karen Matthews with 89 points closely followed by the team of Allan Demery, Arthur Carmichael, Kevin Robinson and Tony Felstad on 86 points. TMGS Match Report, La Finca, 14th August 2013. It’s relentless, the heat of August. It’s the same every year so why on earth are we so surprised to be wilting in 34 degrees? Despite the heat, it was apparent that those that braved it thoroughly enjoyed the delights of La Finca where the fairways and greens were, as usual, of a high standard and where we even witnessed the delivery of ‘new sand’ into the bunkers. The results on the day were a reflection upon the hot conditions and only two members achieved or bettered their handicaps and for a change all 4 NTP’s were won and they were won by Arnie Hansson, Roger Nilsen (Dork and Dildo), Ernie Wilson and Alan Rixson. We had 4 guests and the best was Mr Peter Bull with 34 points. The Silver Division was a fairly close affair except for the winner, Robbie Rae, who was obviously (NOT) missing his partner Olga who came home with 36 points with Roger Nilsen in 2nd place with 33 points and that left Ernie Wilson and Mick Kennedy to fight out 3rd and 4th on the countback with 31 points. The Gold lads didn’t fare much better and the battle of the ‘Hunters’ was won by James who beat Kenny with James taking 3rd place with 34 points. The runner-up was John Eyre with a nice 35 points but not enough to beat the winner Steve Higgins with 38 points who will suffer yet another handicap cut. Fairwayz Golf Society Today we played at Altorreal near Murcia. We played a team yellow ball game and an individual Stableford game which was very enjoyable. The yellow ball game was where each team member took in turns to play a hole with the yellow ball, which if the player managed to score on that hole without losing the yellow ball, doubled that score. Each team recorded the best 2 scores on each hole, alongside the individual scores of each player, it sounds a bit confusing but certainly made you concentrate. Once the yellow ball was lost, the double score bonus ceased. Several yellow balls were lost in the event, to which no cost was afforded to the guilty team member. I have to put my hand up and say, that I was that man who lost the ball in our team, and the only way I could have retrieved it would have been with a Scuba set! Another incident during play which I feel compelled to mention, is that a certain member, no names mentioned, but his initials are PB? and he has grey hair and a moustache, bowed legs, and used to work for the constabulary, had a very senior moment! While waiting on one of the tees for his turn to tee off, he stood his driver up
against a rubbish bin and stood aside. After his 3 colleagues had teed off, he promptly picked up his driver and put it back into his golf bag and merrily drove off up the fairway in the buggy. Halfway up the fairway he asked his partner, “Did you see where my ball went?” then he realised that he had never hit his ball off the tee! Say no more! Wednesday 14th August at El Plantio Golf Course 23 Members and guests traveled to El Plantio GC on a very hot and windless day, we were playing for the honor of winning the Mid Season Trophy. El Plantio is a very pretty parkland course unfortunately they appear to be having problems with some of the greens again, most of our players were disappointed with the conditions of the greens. Some of our members were also having problems trying to remember what game they were playing, Chris Neild thought he was playing pin ball with the trees he hit so many in one go, Paul Flanagan thought he was on a bumper car track when after finding someones 4 iron he placed it in his bag set off on his buggy only to be confronted by a speeding buggy coming straight at him as the owner came racing back to retrieve his club, 2 of our members instead of playing nearest the pin in 3 shots played nearest the ladies tee in 3 shots, and it was a big welcome back to Roy Kavanagh after an absence of 2yrs from golf due to his
waiting for a hip replacement this was his first 18 hole game and he won a prize his name sake THE ROY !!! well done Roy. The new season for Tercera teams begins this weekend. In the last of the pre-season friendlies Torry beat Regional Preferente sides CD Cox 1-0 and Thader (Rojales) 1-0. The scorers were Carrasco against CD Cox and Alberto from the penalty spot against Thader (Rojales). Torry have signed a new striker from local Regional Preferente side Almoradi. He is 26 year old Cameroon born Obele who scored 13 goals in 25 games for Almoradi last season which was a very good return. Earlier in his career he has played in the Tercera and Segunda B . He made a brief appearance in the final pre-season friendly against Thader (Rojales). This takes the number of players Torry have signed up to 20. Clubs are permitted to sign up 22 players of which only 16 can be aged over 23. It is muted that they have made an agreement with Elche CF/Elche Ilicitano to take on fringe players on loan during the season if the need arises and that is probably why there is scope to bring in 2 more on loan during the season. A fair proportion of the players this season come from the managers old team Almoradi; Keeper Carlos, fullback Eloy and forwards Pastor, Eric and Obele. It is hoped they can successfully make the step up to the next level. I have seen all but one of the teams 6 preseason friendlies. The results of these don’t really matter but it gives the manager and the supporters a chance to assess the capabilities of the players and of course to decide on their “first” eleven. The final choice is down to the manager but most supporters are “would be”

managers at heart and come up with their best team. From what I have seen defensively Torry should do alright and I think the manager will set up more defensively than offensively and deploy 2 holding players in front of the back four. I think scoring at the other end might be a problem though but we will have to wait and see. In goal I think Carrion will get the nod over Carlos. The back four should really pick itself with Vicente, Alexis, Rafa and Dani Meseguer although the manger seems to favour Eloy playing in the left back position. The 2 midfield holding players are likely to be Burguillos and Valdeolivas although if Eloy is preferred at left-back to Dani Meseguer, Dani could play as a holding player. Dani should certainly be in the starting lineup as he has been the most consistent player pre-season. On either flank it will be a choice between Micro, Manu Amores, Pastor and Eric with my choice being Micro and either Manu Amores or Pastor. In the central attacking role I would opt for either the experienced Carrasco or Gasch although I think Alberto may get the nod from the manger. Up front as the lone striker it has to be new boy Obele if he is fully fit. If he isn’t I would play Gasch there. There are so many different permutations but let’s hope the manager gets it right. I think it will be a season of ups and downs for Torry with their main objective being to retain their Tercera status. It will depend on the strength of other teams with most I suspect like Torry having to put together a squad on a very limited budget. I would expect the serious
challengers for a top four playoff for promotion spot being; Castellon, Orihuela, Novelda, Eldense and possibly Alzira and Villarreal C. The home pre-season friendlies have been played at the Nelson Mandela stadium which has an artificial playing surface. The club president has invested in having the grass playing surface at Torry’s spiritual home, the Nelson Mandela, worked on over the last month or so by a private contractor to restore it to good condition for the new

sport season. It now looks in great shape for the season’s opener on Sunday 25 August against CF La Nucia, kick-off 6.30 pm. Let’s hope that Torry can serve up some entertaining football on the much improved playing surface and start the season with a victory.
