A record 1.2 million euros compensation awarded to the parents of a physically handicapped baby.

The Justicia condemned the gynaecologist for failing to detect the problem and set the compensation to take into account the pain suffered by the parents.

first maxillofacial intervention The Hospital de Molina has conducted its first maxillofacial intervention using ‘Google Glass’. The three surgeons involved in the operation were able to interact remotely with specialists.

Doctors Pedro Peña, Juan Francisco Piqueras and Alejandro Lópezparticipated in a live broadcast maxillofacial operation using the new Google Goggles in the hospital in Molina de Segura.

This is the second operation using the device; the first, and also the first globally, was in June on Pedro Guillén from Murcia.

The company ‘Droiders’ who collaborated with the doctors with this new technology, said it was the first time that maxillofacial surgery has been relayed through these glasses.

‘Google Glass’ uses glasses with built-in cameras to visually relay the operation being performed by the three doctors in the operating room to an audience of specialists in the vicinity.

The dental assistants watched the operation in real time and discussed questions or information about the intervention, successfully performed on a 70 year old patient who had no natural teeth in his top jaw. Using a novel technique of computer-guided implantology, the patient, at the end of the operation, returned home with all teeth replaced.

The intervention is part of the Diagnostic and Treatment Course, based on Directly Guided Three Dimensional Surgery, organised by the Clínica Dental del Hospital de Molina, and which is attended by dentists from all over Spain. laverdad.es

The Association Defensor del Pacientebrought the case to court in Madrid because the insurer is headquartered in the capital, but the negligence occurred, and the affected parents are, in Murcia.

The girl was born on March 6, 2009 with serious malformations that the family prefers not to divulge. The parents had to leave their jobs to care for the child. The Court noted that ‘the situation of the applicants can be synthesised in suffering and dedication, because they carry the moral and mental suffering every day when contemplating the deformed body of their daughter, and are driven to give their daughter their time and dedication every day, even sacrificing their work or profession Moreover, all this takes place during a period of time that is not calculable, as the life expectancy of the child could not be calculated, though there was an estimated timeframe of twenty years.’

The court decision recognised that the girl suffers not only physical deformities but also mental disability. ‘The compensation must take into account the suffering of the child throughout her life, and the daily dedication of the parents and their ongoing suffering.’

The Court rejected the insurer ‘s arguments, which called for a reduction of compensation imposed by the District Court, and instead supported the arguments of Ignacio Martínez, Abogado of the AsociaciónDefensor del Paciente, who represented the parents. laverdad.es

Rescued from the deep The Armada (Navy) has undertaken an underwater rescue exercisein the Arsenal, from the submarine ‘Galerna’.Fifty soldiers participated in the mock rescue of the submarine crew.

This was the first exercise of five to be conductedby the Armada Española. The manoeuvres are in collaboration with the hyperbaric medical staff of the Centre for Navy Diving (CBA), and members of mobile Intensive Care Units (ICU).

While submerged, the five crew members donned special suits, stored in the Galerna. Each of them in turn then entered an internal lock, where they inflated the suit, and rose to the surface.

The submarine was perched about twenty yards away from the MuelleNorte de la Base de Submarinos. After the rescue of the crew the exercise by the Military to refloat the vessel began. Divers from the rescue vessel Neptune connected air hoses to the sub’s ballast tanks and pumped air from the salvage and rescue ship in order to expel water from the ballast.

This gradually lightened the weight of the submarine, allowing it to rise to the surface.

Lorca and Fortuna suffer earthquakes

Lorca and Fortuna suffer earthquakes, but no damage has been reported.

Lorca was struck first, with a tremor measuring 2.6 in the early morning.

The police have been amazed at the transformation of the building, in the barriada de Las Seiscientas, into a base for drug trafficking, with heavy security in place to resist police raids.

The investigation began three months ago with the onset of criminal activity by two clans known as ‘El regalitos’ and ‘El chivas’, who adapted three floors of the building for the sale of drugs, and installed heavy duty security measures.

Man accused of killing his cousin Man accused of killing his cousin has been foundguilty.

The Judge ruled in the Audiencia Provincial that Antonio Gálvez, accused of killing his cousin in an orchard in Patiño in January 2010, is guilty of murder.

José Antonio Galvez, who had a drinking problem, and had been admitted into a mental hospital in 1991, had a discussion with his cousin, which ‘for reasons unexplained, was not friendly.’

The jury did not accept that, at the time of the altercation, José Antonio lifted the rod from the sprayer to hit the accused, who tried to defend himself with his hands. Instead, the jury believed that Antonio pushed his cousin, but doubted that Jose Antonio fell backwards, because otherwise the sprayer would have caused some marks on his back.

The court held that when José Antonio was lying on the floor, his cousin Antonio kicked him causing multiple injuries to his face, a broken rib and the loss of several teeth. The jurors believed that Antonio’s actions were not driven by a ‘spirit of defence’, as he had no injuries whatsoever after the confrontation.

The defence expert asserted that José Antonio did not die because of asphyxia ‘caused by the inhalation of his own blood,’ but that on the contrary, claimed that the defendant had intended to end the life of his cousin and that therefore ‘squeezed his neck with an object that has not been found.’

MaríaJover accepted that ‘immediately after the event took place he called his relatives to call an ambulance and so assist the injured and prevent death.’

The verdict, however, may be unsafe, as two of the 26 questions appear to have caused confusion to the jurors, who had different opinions on the same topic. The questions are in relation to the matter of Antonio Galvez’ intention to defend himself.

The Prosecutor requested the imprisonment of the defendant, to which the Defence objected, saying that ‘Antonio Galvez has always been available to the court and does not present a flight risk.’

His lawyer, José María Caballero Salinas, did not rule out an appeal to set aside the verdict. laverdad.es

PRE CHRISTMAS GRAND FAIR

It was back in June 2010, that my jottings had an “Exclusive” tag attached, by the editor at the time, Claire, as Sol Times was the first newspaper to report the dreadful murder of Irmgard Fieres, aged 61, who ran La Corona Bar / Restaurant in the village of Pinar de Campoverde.

The accused, identified only by K.H.H., was suspected at the time of murdering his girlfriend and partner in the business, Irmgard, by attacking her in the kitchen on the premises. An autopsy showed that she had been killed by repeated blows to the head. K.H.H., denied being involved.

The jury has now found

the accused guilty as charged, with the public prosecutor asking for a 20 year sentence, and for a payment of 120, 000 euros, in compensation.

What I can “Exclusively” reveal that after the crime, K.H.H., before being visited by the men in green, had thrown himself under a hot shower,

in the hope of removing any incriminating evidence of a deed most foul.

Unfortunately, for K.H.H., a minute spot of blood was discovered by a member of the forensic team, within the accused ear canal.

This was sent away for analysis, and was later found to match exactly, the D.N.A. of the victim.

CAMPOVERDED VETERAN, MURDERED IN THE U.K..

Campoverde Vecinos tell me the sad news that Len Flower, a committee for many years of the Vecinos Association, was brutally murdered outside his home in the U.K., last week.

Len., 67, was attacked in Carnegie Gardens, Luton, and died at the scene.

Police arrested a 35 year old man, in Warwickshire.

Mr Flower had two adult daughters. Len’s wife of 47 years, was in the house at the time, and was unaware of what had taken place, until police and paramedics arrived at the scene.

Remembrance is a very personal thing

For members of The Royal British Legion, wherever we are in the world Remembrance is a part of our lives.

The phrase “We will remember them” said at the start of every meeting is an opportunity for everyone present to remember people lost or injured in conflicts over many years.

Here in Spain, we should also remember all those Spanish people who lost their lives during Spanish conflicts.

Members of the RBL Zurgena Branch, have dedicated a Tree of Remembrance in La Alfoquia as a point of remembrance for everyone.

Somewhere, where we can all go on any special day, to give thanks for the sacrifice of family members and friends on our behalf. The Alcalde of Zurgena Snr. Luis Raz Garcia planted the tree on Thursday 3rd October and said,

“I am pleased to be asked to be a part of this Act of Remembrance and I fully support the idea of communities becoming closer”. also in the picture are Snr. Trebalon Fernandez and Jim Simpson from the Council in Zurgena, and Mr. Ken Davies, Chairman of the Royal British Legion Zurgena and District Branch. Many other members of the Branch attended the ceremony. All hoped that the Tree of Remembrance would help to bring the two communities of Spanish and Ex-Pats closer together.

Things You’ll Need ° Pumpkin ° Sharp knives ° Large spoon

1 Lay out the newspaper on your workspace and set the pumpkin on top. It is a good idea to use several layers. The newspaper will protect your workspace and make cleanup much easier.

2 Cut a hole in the top of the pumpkin, around the stem, using the knife.

When cutting the hole, angle the knife to create a cone shape. This will prevent the top from falling in when you place it back on the pumpkin. Pull on the stem to remove the piece that you cut out. Set this piece aside; it will be the lid for your jack-o’-lantern.

3 Pull all of the guts out of the pumpkin using your hands and the spoon. Use the spoon to scrape around the inside walls of the pumpkin. Be very sure that you get everything out of the inside if you plan on lighting your jack-o’lantern with a candle.

4 Draw a scary face on the pumpkin using a pencil. You can draw the face of a popular monster or come up with your own terrifying design. If you are drawing your own design, think pointy, slanted eyes and big fangs, and feel free to put your own creative spin on the pumpkin.

5 Cut out the pieces of your pumpkin’s face using a sharp knife. Remove these pieces and discard them.

6 When you are finished carving your pumpkin, put a lighted candle inside and replace the lid.

An attractive craft fair in the middle of Alicante

If you fancy the idea of getting really exclusive but not expensive Christmas presents before the rush, take a trip to Alicante town centre. There, in the Avenida Federico Soto, more or less in front of the Corte Inglés, some 40 stalls with real “Artesanía de Autor” work will set up shop. Real craft work, because “Artesania de Autor” means that the person selling the work is the person who made it. Nothing imported and nothing from a factory.

The regional craft association Amata has been holding real craft fairs all over Spain these last twenty years and has built up a large circle of aficionados in the craft world.

Amata selects participants after looking at the quality of their work and considering how they will fit in - the market should not have too many people selling the same sort of material. A good variety of ceramics, leatherwork, paper, silver, macramé, wood, original jewelry, fabrics, forged iron, handbags, cushions, wooden toys is to be found on one of their markets.

This market in the middle of Alicante is especially interesting because many of the participants will be working at their stall. Watch Chema bind books, José carve bone and horn to make spoons or costume jewelry, Thomas painting T-shirts, Diego decorate boxes with filigree paper and Ramón weave intricately patterned buttons with Celtic motifs. Often they can add to or change part of their design to suit the taste or need of a potential customer - a name, another colour or perhaps a slightly different sized.

Many of the pieces to be seen in this craft fair are the sort of thing you will see in expensive art galleries where you pay a lot more. Here you can buy directly from the craftsman or woman - cheaper, more fun and a lot more interesting. And the people in the stalls much prefer to see where their lovingly made articles will find a new home.

Most of these people choose this sort of work because they enjoy making something original, but they have to earn a living, which is why Amata spends its time holding markets to which it hopes to attract people who are really interested in this sort of work.

The Craft Market will be set up in the Avda. Federico Soto and is open on Friday 8, Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 November, from 11 to 2 and from 5 to 9. Many (but not all) stalls will stay open from 11 to 9, as will the big department stores in this rather upmarket part of Alicante which also stay open on the Sunday. Hydrangea is the spectacular flowering star of the summer and autumn garden, and established plants are able to withstand dry periods surprisingly well, as long as they get a good drink regularly during the hot season. Interestingly, hydrangeas also seem to grow to perfection in coastal areas and can even withstand a few salt-laden sea breezes. They are not particular about soil conditions and seem to grow just as

well in heavy clay soils as they do in sandy loams.

The hydrangea most commonly grown is the large-leafed Hydrangea macrophylla, which grows in a multi-stemmed, tight dome of foliage and flowers. When planted fairly closely together, these plants produce a dense canopy of shade, right down to soil level, which makes them superb, weedsuppressing, ground-covering plants. And they look fantastic through most of summer.

They have two distinct forms to their blooms. The one most often encountered in gardens is the mophead or hortensia hydrangea, which has a mass of coloured sterile florets that form a round head. They even grow and flower in places that receive little sunlight, although the shadier the spot, the

Rooting cuttings in six easy steps:

1. Take cuttings of about 10-15cm long from a branch of the hydrangea shrub in late summer (Then they will be ready to plant out the following spring and will soon be producing flowers). The cuttings will work best if taken from a new branch that did not flower this year.

2. Remove the lower leaves of the bottom two leaf nodes.

3. Cut largest leaves down to about half their size 4. Dip cuttings in rooting hormone (this is entirely optional) and insert into damp vermiculite, coarse sand or other sterile medium.

5. Water pot well and allow to drain. Make sure soil is moist, but not soggy. Cover cuttings and pot with plastic. Try to keep plastic from touching the leaves by adding stakes.

Place cuttings in a bright, shady area (NOT in the sun), and do not water again until top of soil begins to feel slightly dry. Overwatering will cause cuttings to rot.

Cuttings should begin to root in 1-3 weeks.

Pruning Hydrangeas do not have to be pruned back unless they are very old. Removing dead stems and dead blooms is the only pruning that must be done for the health of the plant, and this can be done at any time. But if your hydrangea is getting much too large (or old), it is best pruned in late summer/early autumn when it has stopped blooming and before the buds for next season´s flowers are produced.

If the branches are pruned too late, next summer’s flowering will either be delayed or fail to occur.

However, there exists a small group of mophead hydrangeas called “Endless summer” that will bloom no matter when they are pruned.

Hydrangeas are moderately toxic if eaten, however, poisoning is rare, as the plant does not look like an enticing food source.

A WARM SIBERIAN WELCOME by Mike Walsh The term legend and icon are much abused these days.

Having caught up with flamenco maestra Raquel Peña I came straight to the point.

“You were feted in Sergut in Siberia, and also Moscow and St. Petersburg, where next your dancing feet?”

Her reply; “there’s a relationship between the guitar and the balalaika; I share it and I rule nothing out.”

An unassuming and approachable woman

Raquel’s unmatched dancing and teaching skills are internationally acclaimed. “Your legacy lives on in students.

Some, like professional flamenco performers Daniel Asis, Elvira Sanchez and the breathtaking Argentinean beauty Luciana Ibañez are captivating audiences. This must bring great satisfaction.”

Raquel smiled: “It does of course but you know, through the students from my school, Flamenco for All, my Sevillana dancers also keep alive the Andalucía spirit. They raise a great deal of money for charities whose purpose is to bring relief to the hard-pressed regardless of nationality.”

Raquel who has earned more awards than many has to be nailed down. Most of the venues where she and her star-studded troupe appear are distinctly chic. Touching on the subject, she told me that she thinks it important that her flamenco performances reflect both Spanish ambiance and discerning clientele. “Having said that,” she adds. “It is equally important that my audience is not exclusive.

Wherever we perform we welcome those who drop by. I only do two ticket only performances each year.”

Dropping in is more easily said than done. Many of the venues she and her artistes appear at are popular and tables need to be pre-booked. “I do not have favourite settings,” she tells me. “Each of my staged performances has their

unique qualities just as my dancers do.”

Raquel Peña and her artistes, destined for legend status like the connoisseur herself, can be experienced on Tuesday evenings at Orihuela Costa Resort, La Zenia.

Performances start at 2.30 pm at Rebate Restaurant on Wednesdays and Sundays. Friday finds them at the Castle de Conesa in San Miguel.

Festival Medieval d’Elx Candice Parsons

This year from Friday October 25th to Sunday November 3rd 2013, the city of Elche in Alicante will host its 18th annual Festival Medieval d’Elx, as the city centre transforms into a Medieval town of historical commemoration. The city, now more than two thousand years old, holds a significant connection to the Middle Ages, which is generally believed to have been between the 5th and 15th centuries. In light of this, the festival presents its residents and visitors with an array of entertainment that enscapulates the rich Moorish and Baroque origins that have contributed to this city.

The central plaza is filled with Medieval street markets, whilst various free-roaming street entertainers, reenactments, fire displays, and passacaglia immerse the city.

As an event catering to all ages and groups, a scheduled program offering entertainment and activities ranging from theatre performances, concerts, workshops, and cultural manifestations, to seminars, exhibitions, fireworks, and games for children.

Often during the last few days of the Festival Medieval d’Elx, the famous liturgical drama,‘Misteri d’Elx’, is performed by local men of the city. This is creates an additional feature to the Medieval feel of the city, as women were forbidden to act during the Middle Ages. The Misteri d’Elx play is believed to have originated from Elche in the Medieval period, and commemorates the Assumption of Mary.

We will shortly be purchasing a property in Spain in joint names (value aprox. 150000 euro) where we intend to stay for 3 to 4 months a year spending the rest of the year in our flat in the u.k. (value aprox. 150000 euro ). We have no children and will be leaving the estate to each other using a Spanish will. Do we have to pay inheritance tax in Spain when one of us dies?

A. If you remain non-residents of Spain then the surviving spouse would have to pay inheritance tax on half the value of the Spanish estate after deducting a 16.000 euro exemption. The surviving spouse would pay aprox. 6000 euro to inherit half the property.

To avoid this you need to take advantage of the fact that the exemption rate in the u.k.( 325000 pounds sterling ) is much higher than the exemption rate in Spain for non resident spouses (only 16.000 euro) One solution would be for you to leave your money in the u.k and buy the property using a mortgage from a Spanish bank . The value of the Spanish estate would then be the value of half the property minus half the mortgage and the value of the English estate would be the value of half the property in the u.k. plus half of the money that you left in the u.k. As the total value of half the property in the uk. plus half the money is less than the threshold for inheritance tax in the u.k. (325000 pounds sterling) you pay no inheritance tax. In Spain or in the u.k.

As setting up a mortgage has expenses attached, other options would need to be considered before using the system above, but for this we would require further information not available on your e-mail.

NON-RESIDENT INCOME TAX. If you are non-resident of Spain and own a property you must file a non-resident income tax return every year even if you have never rented out the property. Please note that the tax office has no obligation of informing you of this. Do not confuse this tax with rates (IBI), which is a local tax and nothing to do with non-resident tax.

‘Strictly Line Up for 2013’ wee k 5

Opening the show this week were Natalie Gumede and Artem with a Samba. Natalie showed a great range of basic steps with super rhythm and nicely extended lines, but for me this week her boto fogo’s (one of the basic movements) showed an ugly leg line and for that reason I only gave her an 8 with the judges 35.

To gain more softness Abbey needs to stretch her legs back more when moving backwards as a result this wasn’t just as controlled as in previous weeks. I awarded her 8 and the judges a total of 35.

Following were Dave Myers and Karen with a Salsa. Well how can I describe this?

It certainly wasn’t dancing, his timing was awful, salsa basic non existent but yet it proved popular with the crowd. It really is time he wasn’t here as he is now taking space of good dancers. I awarded him a very generous 2 and the judges 17.

With a Viennese Waltz were Deborah Meaden and Robin. As a result of a core which is still too soft, her Viennese Waltz chasses were skipped and not smooth. It

was an improvement on last week and the transitions between hold and solo work were quite good. I gave her 5 and the judges 27.

Patrick Robinson and Anya were next with their Salsa. On Friday, Patrick sustained a hand injury which meant that much of the choreography had to be changed to single handed basic and lifts meaning that the normal armography was missing. That said Patrick’s musicality is really good and he coped superbly well under the circumstances. He received a 7 from me and 28 from the judges.

Next with a Quickstep were Fiona Fullerton and Anton. I found this routine very repetitive and lacking variety of steps.

Fiona is still have posture issues and she didn’t complete her routine without errors.

She is however improving. I gave her 6 with 30 from the judges.

Rachel Riley and Pasha then performed a Paso Doble. Although Rachel tried to retain her intensity, it was let down by her weak body posture. She was dancing with her bottom stuck out resulting in her leaning forward, quite the opposite of what you need for this dance. Her basic chasse cape was poor and her kicks showed no pointed

toes! I gave her 5 with the judges 22.

Mark Benton and Ivetta then danced their Waltz. Rather disappointing for me this week, Mark was leading with his left arm instead of his body and as a result his Waltz wasn’t as smooth as it could have been. I awarded him 5 with the judges 28.

Jive was the next dance for Ashley Taylor Dawson and Ola. This was a great routine full of energy, the basic moves weren’t bad but still a bit flat footed for me with work needed on his kicks to sharpen them and point toes! I gave him 7 with the judges awarding 31.

Suzanna Reid and Kevin then performed an American Smooth. She showed great characterisation of this dance, nicely danced but again still needing work on the upper frame which if sorted would result in her going rapidly up the ratings. The judges gave her 32 and I gave an 8.

Ben Cohen and Kristina followed with their Quickstep. They performed a good range of steps which were reasonably well performed even though Ben still needs to work on his hold, posture and timing but it was still a good attempt. I awarded him 6 with the judges a total of 27.

Closing this weeks show were Sophie

Ellis Bextor and Brendan with a Cha Cha Cha. Sophie has great legs but still hasn’t quite mastered how to use them correctly, in this dance she needed more of a pedal action bending and straightening her knees to produce the hip action and better use of feet and ankles. Her Cha Cha was a bit stompy with her weight carried too far back in some parts. I gave her 6 with the judges 30.

I found this week to be a bit disappointing with most of the performances lacking finesse. All the boys need to work on correcting flat feet and use their feet and ankles more and the girls really need to get to grips with their frame and posture.

In the bottom 2 were Patrick and Deborah, Patrick surviving easily with a judges unanimous vote to continue to next week.

I just hope we don’t have to suffer Dave for much longer!! Next week is Halloween week so the costumes and makeup will be OTT. In the meantime don’t forget you can learn along with the stars at one of our classes but til then - Keep Dancing!

We turned into the Hospital car park at Huercal-Overa, and began cruising the aisles with a predatory air as we searched for the last, and only, space.

Simultaneously we saw it, and swooped little Del into it, like a metal peregrine falcon on to a magnetic lure.

As he came to rest neatly mid-space, Pete made the discovery that the handbrake was no more – it was still physically present, but only in a decorative way.

Fortunately the car park is flat, so Del was still where we had left him when we returned.

It is not until you don’t have a handbrake that you realise how many times you use it, so on our journey home we called in at the garage that has ministered to Del’s needs satisfactorily in the past, hoping to make a speedy appointment for his brake to be mended.

I explained the problem to a young lad whose physical perfections transcended the multi-layered grease of his overalls, and he explained the problem to his boss, who bore an uncanny resemblance to Phil Collins.

This he did by revving Del into a racing start across the floor of the workshop, then jamming the newly mended brake on to arrest his headlong progress inches before he disappeared through a Del-shaped hole in the far wall.

I watched, marvelling at his confidence in his expertise and Del’s handbrake! ‘It wasn’t working before, but it is now!’ he commented, as he unpeeled himself from the driving seat.

Phil Collins was still in his office, tapping computer keys; I wondered if the length of time he spent tapping equated to the size of the eventual cuenta, so I entered, purse in hand, knowing that such instant and effective service was sure to come with an equally instant and effective bill.

He rose from the incongruous surroundings of a fairly clean office, returning to the floor of the workshop, where he looked more at home. ‘No, nothing to pay’ he insisted, with much hand waving and a beaming smile, before immersing himself up to the armpits in open heart surgery on a white van.

Now that’s how to win friends and influence people!

Harold the Conqueror and All That If you feel like a good laugh sometime, then tune in to some of current crop of quiz programmes on television.

I say laugh, because I find that the choice is either that or hold my head in my hands and babble incomprehensibly. In either case, there is a strong possibility of wetting myself.

I have rattled on a lot in the past about how the history of the British has been sidelined in schools back home, in favour of more ‘important and relevant’ subjects. I have bent the proverbial ear-holes of a lot of people, arguing that unless we know the history of our country, then how can we accurately place ourselves in relation to the rest of the world or understand how we got here. Indeed - how can we know who we are as individuals?

A great example of this lack of knowledge (I’m being polite here) was in evidence a week or so ago when a contestant on Take On The Twisters was asked which of three historic family houses was in conflict with the house of York during the English Wars of the Roses.

The three choices were:

Stuart, Lancaster and Tudor.

The contestant in question was a young man in his early twenties, who declared confidently that he had achieved an A Level in history and so should know the answer. He immediately discarded Lancaster and after a little bit of pondering, decided that it was either the Tudors or the Stuarts . . . brilliant deduction Sherlock.

Finally he decided on the House of Tudor.

York . . . Lancaster? White Rose . . . Red Rose? Julia Bradbury teased. Nah? Forget it.

Then more recently on Tipping Point, that chipper quiz-master-chappie Ben Shephard asked a vacant looking bloke, what was the name of the leader of the Normans at the Battle of Hastings.

There is a choice in this game of either answering the question or passing it over to one of your fellow contestants if you are clueless, which in this case – after a bit of head scratching – is what happened. Over then to a fresh faced college student. A smile appeared on the young man’s face as he affirmed that he knew this one and gave the answer as ‘Harold’.

Now I am sure that the individuals in these two examples would run rings round me in the Information Technology/Political Science/ The Theory and Practice of White Water Rafting on the Kennet & Avon Canal – stakes. But that aside I find

it appalling that a supposedly well educated British student does not know about one of the principal events in English history, that in my day was taught to us in the early years of Primary School. Until I witnessed this farce, I thought it was a done deal that if nothing else, then surely every Brit knows about 1066 and all that. Seems I was wrong. At least two out of four people – if this quiz programme is an indicator – know less about our history than a Siberian tap dancer.

And in case you are wondering; it was not just a case of getting the names of the protagonists mixed up, because when this bright spark was told that the answer was William Duke of Normandy - later know as the conker – he simple pursed his lips and slowly shook his head as if to say: ‘Never heard of him.’

Gawd knows what you would get if you asked these turnips about King Harold and the Battle of Stamford Bridge which was commemorated last month.

Probably some stuff about a London derby in the football Premiership.

By way of confirmation of all this, the Daily Telegraph conducted a survey of its own some time ago, and asked who won the Battle of Hastings. A third of all 16-34 year olds did not know that it was William the Conqueror, while more than a fifth of those surveyed thought that we had been conquered by

the Germans, Americans or Spanish.

In fairness, this ignorance was not confined to the young with 22% of the over 65 year olds questioned not being aware that the Romans had conquered Britain at one time. But come on . . . this is just an age related memory issue. We are not aware of a lot of things these days. I can’t remember, um . . .

Anyway where was I . . . ?

Yes and get this. Less than half of the younger age group in the survey, were able to identify Francis Drake as the victorious leader against the Spanish Armada. The rest thought it might have been Christopher Columbus, Gandalf or Horatio Hornblower.

Honestly . . .

Everyone knows that Hornblower clobbered the French at the Battle of Trafalgar Square.

Apart from a dishevelled beard and a Seville Hat which sits perpetually on the top of a spherical crimson faced head, Pedro el Estevado has three claims to fame.

Firstly, he breeds the world renowned Alquerian Newt Hound. A strange dog evolved from the Andalucían Hound and fearless in its search for the formidable Alquerian Newt.

Second. He has the most pronounced bow legs on the Iberian Peninsula. He is so bow legged that when naked his genitals appear to be in parentheses.

Thirdly he has B.O. His body odour is mentioned in the UN Chemical Weapons’ Convention. When he applies deodorant his B.O. simply acts as a catalyst modifying even the most fragrant odour into a foul smelling emission.

Pedro’s body odour is almost tangible. Some swear they have seen a strange glowing mist engulf him when his body juices are in ascendance. People naturally avoid him.

Those who are not swift enough to take evasive action are usually buttonholed by him. These unfortunates will agree to anything just to cut the interview short. Pedro believes this is down to his eloquence in debate rather than his nauseating personal pong. The simple villagers feel rather intimidated by his powers of persuasion and so avoid him, at least this is what Pedro believes and of course explains why people avoid him.

So Pedro struts about the village scattering its inhabitants before. His B.O. flowing like a malodorous veil, if it were visible it could screen the largest of convoys. Today however Pedro was in demand. Rodriquez the olive mill owner and patriarch of the Newcomers needed to speak with him. Rodriquez had taken precautions in the form of a handkerchief heavily doped with aftershave which he kept against his mouth on the pretext of having a slight cold.

Pedro was overjoyed at the meeting. He listened intently to Rodriquez bemoaning the fact that the Alquerian coffers were empty after the failure of Remitbrick and Remitbright.

Rodriquez, turning almost purple with the stench issuing from the open necked shirt told him of his wonder at Pedro’s powers of persuasion and how he could charm the very birds of the very trees. Rodriquez laid it on thick and Pedro lapped it up, growing in stature and stench at each new complement.

Rodriquez is a man who specialises in Machiavellian intrigue and is a man who regards himself as a born leader.

There was a reason for these overtures he made to Pedro el Estevado.

A reason which will become clear very very soon!

Mash the meat in a bowl with a spoon, then tip in the onion, apple, red pepper and oregano (and seasoning if you want to). Mash again to mix everything together.

Now mix well with your hands until the mixture is sticky and divide into 16 smallish balls. Chill in the fridge while you make the sauce. You can make them up to this stage 2 days ahead, or freeze them.

Make the sauce. Soften the onion in a medium saucepan with the oil.

Tip in the tomatoes and simmer very gently, uncovered, for about 20 mins. Add the rest of the ingredients except the basil and slow cook for another 15-20 mins. Add the basil and a splash of water from the kettle.

Tip the contents of the pan into the food processor and whizz until smooth.

Heat oven to 190C/fan 170C/gas 5. Gently roll the meatballs in flour.

Heat a spoonful of oil in an ovenproof non-stick frying pan, wipe out with kitchen paper, then add the meatballs and fry gently and slowly over a low heat for 10 mins, turning them over once with tongs. (You may need to do this in batches if your pan is not very big.) Drain off any excess fat, pour in the sauce and finish off cooking in the oven for 15 mins. Serve with pumpkin mash.

strange but true Texan cattle farmer, Teg Whisson, got more than he bargained for after winning a recent produce competition in Fort Worth. His 1485lb history making giant pumpkin began to grow legs - quite literally - as they unloaded the prize on his ranch return. Two hours later, Whisson was delivering a calf. Not as one would expect from its labouring mother but actually from within Whisson’s prize pumpkin.

While on the surface this story may seem incredibly far-fetched, one only has to understand Whisson’s experimental tendencies in Artificial Insemination (AI) to realise the situation isn’t far removed from normality.

“After we finished dosing up the heifers we still had some sperm left over. Jed [Whisson’s 2IC], who was probably more inebriated than I after a few celebratory drinks challenged me to inseminate my pumpkin patch. We did it as a joke and never really thought anything would come of it,” said Whisson.

Pumpkins and cattle have occupied Whissons time for the past 23 years. His countless awards for his Hereford bull and breeding stock have made Teg a sought after ‘guru’ in AI procedures and new technologies. Combined with his pastime of growing giant pumpkins he has became infamous within the Texan Country Fairs association.

But nobody ever expected that the two could mix.

The concoction that was syringed into the fledgling pumpkin was a mix of bull sperm and fertile eggs, the same that Whisson impregnates in all his heifers. It’s a new technology that Whisson had been trialing to increase fertility rates in his breeding stock with amazing success.

So, how does a calf grow inside a pumpkin? Well, it seemed all the conditions were perfect for this little bovine to mature. The pumpkin seemingly nurtured the calf with enough inner warmth due to its incredible bulk and obviously supplied the foetus with enough nutrient.

“When the calf finally birthed, the pumpkin deflated like a punctured balloon. It was an extraordinary experience.”

While the pumpkin was certainly a great incubator during gestation, it apparently wasn’t enough to prepare the calf for life after birth. A few short hours later the young animal struggled to continue its breathing and died.

Whisson was asked whether he would try this experiment again. “No. It wasn’t an experiment just some harmless fun that produced an incredible result. Pumpkins aren’t made to rear baby calves and it’s harder to produce a giant pumpkin than a few breeding heifers. We’ll stick with nature’s intentions.”

November and the weather has still been quite hot – not much rain so far this autumn and we have been constantly watering the garden although our “top” well is regularly running dry indicating the water table is low ........... TV NEWS ......... Well the news we all want to know “is the new “E” satellite going to affect us ?” and as of writing today, still I cannot answer that question! The satellite was launched successfully late in September – after many, almost years, of delays by the Russian Proton rocket.

At the time of writing for the printed version of the newsletter -deadline of 15th October – the satellite has just reached its testing position of 43.5E and a small test transmission started which on the face of it looks hopeful for our signals BUT when the “F” satellite was launched last year the test transmissions looked good from the 43.5E slot but when it got into service at 28.5E channel 5 was lost to most of those west of Lorca and then right down the coast.

So its final transmission footprint for BBC and ITV is unknown but it is possible it will be fully known when this newsletter appears around 1st November and you may be reading “history” ..... If not by that date then very soon after !

The question we are asked daily is “what preparations can we make to ensure we don’t loose our beloved “corrie” !” ......... and the answer still really has to be none.

Writing this article I feel we installers sound so very unprofessional not knowing the future but it is the way it is – no one knows. If we did we would be stocking a 1000 of whatever will be needed !

Of course internet TV is being pushed in the adverts and does work and will NOT be affected by these possible changes but you do need an excellent internet connection for decent “hic” free TV AND if all the Brits in an area start watching live TV over their internet with the CONTINUOUS download required I doubt the internet suppliers will be able to cope with the demand .......... you never get the internet speed you pay for and certainly don’t get it continuously and consistently and the more that come on line the more the providers have to “share it out” - I don’t see internet TV as being the solution for most of us if the worst happens but it may cover the few where huge dishes are not an option. (We do now have an internet TV system where only 0.5Mb is required BUT the picture is poor but it is a possible solution !)

Lastly BBC1 has announced that it is to launch a BBC1+1 channel. You will be aware that most channels now have a +1 to watch “live” TV an hour later but the BBC have never gone down that route – saying iplayer is the way to see past TV ....... but they are now going the +1 route too ............ dates not yet announced.

The Camposol Residents Association

Although in being for some years as an ad hoc organisation the Association formally adopted its constitution as a registered voluntary organisation in the summer of 2006. (Reg No 7943/1, CIF No : G73369167) It is dedicated to the development and well being of Camposol in Murcia. This township is now ten years old and has some 5000 dwellings. It is still under construction and will not be finished for some years.

The development has a wide range of nationalities, Dutch, Belgium, Germans, Norwegians, French, and Spanish but is primarily British. Some 3000 Brits live here permanently with another 2000 owning holiday homes. This site enables all, but particularly those who live in the UK to keep in touch.

Living here is a privilege, a broad arid river valley surrounded by mountains, twenty minutes from the Mediterranean, an hours drive from Murcia Airport, the cities of Murcia, Cartagena, Lorca, the resorts of Mazarron and Aguilas. A place which has been settled from before Roman times, with the oldest boat in the world in the harbour of Mazarron.

These 3000 have settled here mostly over the past five years, although some have lived here up to ten years. The past two years has seen bare villas turned into palaces with magical gardens, over 100 British owned businesses formed and developed.

We now have 7 restaurants, a dozen bars, including one with a large events room, with full lighting stage and sound equipment. There is a large supermarket, taxis, builders merchant, swimming pool constructors and maintainers, even central heating installers!

We are proud to live here amongst the Spanish, taking part in Spanish Cultural and Political life, but able to retain our own identity. Most of us carry Spanish driving licences, have Spanish Residence cards and are learning Spanish. We enjoy our visitors, whether they are family from the UK or holiday makers.

This site consists of the minutes of our committee meetings and important announcements and press releases as well as a forum page open for discussions amongst members.

The Association is open to all homeowners of Camposol and is controlled by an elected Liaison Committee who are democratically voted in.

The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal Runs from 14th October to 14th November and poppies can be found throughout Camposol and Puerto de Mazarrón.

More history of the world Cup play in 1944, then when play resumed they won Serie A again in 1946, 47, 48 and 1949.

The Torino team were returning from a match in Portugal when their plane crashed killing all on board.

The team was devastated, despite the horrific loss Torino played the rest of the season by fielding its youth team. The teams they played against out of respect also fielded their youth teams. Torino won the Scudetto (league title) in 1950 but then did not win again until 1976. Italy agreed to travel to Brazil but rather than fly they travelled by ship.

The British teams were again invited to take part and the Home Nations Championships were used as the qualifying competition. FIFA decided that the top two teams would travel to Brazil. The Scottish FA announced that they would only compete in the World Cup if they won the Home Championships; they came second with England winning. So England travelled alone to their first ever World Cup. England were firm favourites having recently beaten an invitation European eleven 6-1 and they beat Chile in their first game 2-0. But calamity struck when the inventors of the beautiful game lost their next two games 0-1, against upstarts USA and then Spain. Uruguay playing for the first time since winning in1930 beat Brazil 2-1to become world champions again.

The 1954 finals were in Switzerland. West Germany qualified and both England and Scotland played.

These finals have the record for the most goals scored with some huge scores; 7-5 in the Austria v Switzerland quarter final, Uruguay the holders put paid to Scottish dreams by trouncing them 7-0. Then in the quarters they sent England home by winning 4-2. The final was between tournament favourites Hungary and West Germany. The Germans won 3-2 with a team made up of amateurs as professional football was not yet played in Germany. Afterwards allegations of performance enhancing drug use were made against the Germans which was likely as many in the team caught jaundice from using the same hypodermic needle at half time.

But this of course is far from the truth. For whilst there may indeed be an element of celebration that we have been spared to live our lives in freedom, the primary consideration of Remembrance-tide is that of gratitude to the many thousands who over the years have given themselves to ensure we have that freedom. The efforts, the pain, the suffering and sacrifice of so many, not just in two World Wars, but even now as they seek to protect us from much of the potential horror of modern terrorism, surely deserves our gratitude, our donations and a little at least, of our time as we remember them on Remembrance Sunday and at the Armistice Services held on November 11th.

Moses is not the only Old Testament character currently in the area, which is the location for the filming of Ridley Scott’s epic Exodus.

How to get to the Sierra Alhamilla In the west, the AL110 road leads up from Pechina to the Baños de Sierra Alhamilla. A few kilometres past the A92/N340 junction, towards Tabernas, is a track, not tarmacked, that goes into the northeast part of the Sierra and crosses it all the way to Turrillas; Just beyond the park boundaries in the east is the Níjar-Lucainena de las Torres AL102 road, which passes through some dramatic landscape in the Sierra’s foothills.

Freeware vs Shareware vs Open Source and Why Use It

What are the differences between three models of “free” software, and does it matter which, if any, you use and is it any good? Many of us are actually confusing open source software with two other models of “free” software. So a quick definition to try and clear it up.

First on the list is “Shareware” as this has the most restrictions and limitations. “Shareware” was a concept that has been around since the 70’s when I first qualified in computers. The idea is that you can download and try shareware for free, but if you use it, you are supposed to pay for it. To encourage you to “Buy after you try (which was it’s unique selling point), you were offered more “bell’s and whistles” - further functions that make the program what it should have been in the first place. Shareware is sometimes called “Crippleware” for this reason. We, the user’s, don’t have access to the source code and cannot modify it. Strangely, for something with the word share in it, there is also no community where anyone can assist and improve the software.

So, shareware is “free” as in a (limited) “Free Sample” at restaurants or grocery stores.

Second on the list is “Freeware”. This term has been so overused, it’s meaning is a little fuzzy! So for today, we can consider “freeware” as “Shareware” BUT software, complete and unrestricted, which can be downloaded, used, and copied without restrictions. This is at the heart of the “Free Software Foundation” (Also from the 70’s – where have we all gone wrong?).

Finally, my favourite, “Open Source”. This simply means that the source code, (lines of code, usually in pseudo-english, which is processed into something that your computer can understand and follow), is available to all potential users, and they are free to use, modify, and re-distribute the source code. Legally, the “free” of open source refers exclusively to the source code! Having said that it is more usual to get the working program, ready for your system, and support in the form of; access to Blogs / Bulletin Board Services and sometimes the group developing the program! “Open source” advocates like to say that open source software is “free” as in “free speech,” which is true. Since the user has the source code, it’s also usually “free” as in “free lunch,” even if sometimes you’d have to tip the waiter to get good service or pay for the wine.

Legally, the difference between freeware and open source is that you can not get hold of the source code. There is no community and no development infrastructure around “Freeware” as there is around “Open Source” software. Thus, while you can use it “as is,” there is no real way to improve it or obtain support for it. In the end, the only difference between shareware and commercial software is that you can download and try shareware for free. Like commercial software, you are ultimately dependent on the developer of shareware for enhancements and support. The saddest thing I think I can imagine is passing through life without some kind of impact, without leaving a legacy in one form or another. We all contribute. We enrich the lives of others in so many ways.

We spend our lives trying to make sense of the world, searching for answers in striving to achieve wisdom but the only certainty in life is that one day, sooner or later, we will die. Murning’s novel explores the fear and isolation of dying in a sensitive but powerful way. It is extremely moving and based firmly in realism.

Tobias Lovelost, the lemon who day after day, week after week, month after month survived on his own even after encountering disappointment after disappointment. Like the song says, you still haven’t found what you’re looking for. He was destined to be the man who didn’t say anything, the man who wouldn’t speak up for himself until he met Lorna. She instilled in him the confidence to speak his mind.

His personal life, his marriage to Lorna felt wonderful. Lorna loved Tobias unconditionally. She was completely dependable and mutual respect was reciprocated. They had been blissfully married for six years and were seen as the perfect couple.

Tobias couldn’t imagine life without Lorna. Meeting her had transformed him.

His work was another matter. Methodical and tedious, an exercise in conformity and restraint working for a ruthless boss, Middleton, who bullied and threatened.

Tobias rekindled a friendship with eccentric writer Bob Bartholomew and his passionate pumpkin of an artist, Patsy O’Connor, a very down-to-earth, welcoming person who accepted people for who they were. Bob had developed OCDObsessive Compulsive Disorder. Something very strange…A fear of open doors. Closed doors are not a problem just open ones.

Jogging on Sundays became a happy ritual for Tobias and Lorna until the misjudging of one of the bollards culminates in Lorna crashing to the ground. An anxious Tobias suggested the hospital for a check-up. Lorna has a routine examination followed by scans which herald the unexpected and shocking news that Lorna has a brain tumour which has affected her sight. She can expect to live up to 12 months with surgery and chemo. Like a bolt out of the blue, the novel explores how they both come to terms with the inevitable. Tobias seems the hardest hit by it all.

I felt reality kicking in-unremitting and brutally cold, merciless in its ineradicable integrity. Like a child, I wanted to clamp my hands over my ears- squeezing my eyes shut.

He wanted to be innocent, not knowing, in self-denial. Living in the past meant death, living in the future was death in the present. Once he had lost Lorna he believed that his years

in the wilderness would begin again……..

Murning introduces another storyline running concurrently with Tobias and Lorna’s. It contains similar ingredients of tragedy but seeks the permission to hope for a better future. This time it is Bob’s story and begins with a lasting image of a woman falling from his apartment window when he was a child.

No screaming, no yelling.

Nothing. She just slowly rolled forward-toppling out and down.

The truth was that the woman was not actually there. Young Bob did not see her die.

His parents had been arguing before his mother finally left, never returning. The young boy had made a mental connection between the woman who had fallen and his mother’s leaving.

Accident and conscious decision he called it. It became one and the same. An illusion of his dead mother added to his OCD tipped him off balance mentally and whilst Tobias is trying to deal with his own trauma as Lorna’s condition deteriorates, Bob moves on a rollercoaster of a journey to discover the truth about his mother and a woman he comes to know as Eliza Jones who bequeathed a map, a key, a photo and a letter to her son. It becomes a liberating experience for Bob, freedom from burden. A quest.

For Lorna and Tobias, a return to the moors, revisiting a favourite haunt of their childhood, conjuring up wonderful memories proves to be an emotionally happy time until an image of Barghest reminds them that death is waiting round the corner and time is running out.

Eliza Jones’ legacy is awesome, leaving Bob speechless and in tears. Lorna’s legacy is vital for Tobias’ future survival and happiness. Katarina was introduced to stop Tobias from falling apart.

I needed you to unearth that quality within yourself. That strength and lack of indecision, the faith in yourself that only you could truly find.

Doesn’t hope rely on faith, so that in spite of tragedy we are hopeful that there is something worth waiting for? When you read it you will then understand why permission to hope is so relevant and having faith in oneself is the key to the future.

A few years ago, Greenpeace lambasted Land Rover for building gas-guzzling SUVs. Since then we’ve had more efficient powertrains, engine-cutting stop-start systems and weight-slashing aluminium bodyshells.

But nothing promises to cull emissions quite like this: the new Range Rover Hybrid, a 2394kg off-roader with a potent V6 diesel engine that emits just 169g/km – 27g/km less than today’s substantially less powerful Range Rover TDV6 and a whopping 130g/km less than the lastgeneration Td6 that so riled those greens.

We’re driving late prototypes today ahead of Land Rover taking them on a trek from Solihull to India, hence the expedition graphics and roof rack.

What are the hybrid’s compromises?

The Hybrid uses a 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel engine which, when combined with its electric boost, yields 335bhp/516lb ft and promises 44.1mpg and 169g/km. This promises comparable performance to a TDV8 Range Rover (334bhp/516lb ft) with parsimony to shame the entry-level TDV6 (37.7mpg/196g/ km). The Hybrid can also drive on electric power alone for up to a mile at speeds of

30mph or less.

There is no petrol version, Land Rover saying the Hybrid is a European-focussed vehicle rather than one aimed at the burgeoning American and Chinese markets that’ll lap up the Porsche Cayenne Hybrid. Only time will tell if that’s a mistake.

The system works like this: a 35kW electric motor is packaged within the ZF eight-speed gearbox, sitting between the ratios and the engine itself and taking the place of the torque converter. Meanwhile, the fuel tank is smaller to make way for the lithium-ion battery pack, which powers the electric motor. Back off the throttle and the coasting engine charges the battery. Brake lightly and all the retardation comes from the regenerative braking system, which also feeds charge back to the battery.

Brake harder and a blend of brake-pad friction and regenerative braking combines to stop you.

What’s the Range Rover Hybrid’s spec?

Just two, as far as we can see: the hybrid tech adds 120kg to the kerbweight and the price rockets past the TDV6’s £71k and TDV8’s £78k to land right in range-topping Supercharged V8 territory at approximately £100k.

But because the Range Rover was designed from the off to be a hybrid, there are no packaging compromises related to the battery pack: passenger room, boot space and sparewheel provision are all unaltered, and even the gearbox is no larger. Possible side-effects of the smaller fuel tank are also negated thanks to the improved fuel economy: the range is said to remain the same as a TDV6 at around 400 miles depending on driving style.

Likewise, off-road capability is unaltered – and, as we’ll discover, even enhanced. The battery pack is shielded by boron steel to protect from bumps and scrapes; approach, departure and break-over angles are unchanged; and Land Rover claims you can even jack the Range Rover up right under the battery without consequence.

ITV ORIHUELA RFC AT THE DOUBLE

A perfect start to the season for ITV Orihuela RFC cadets and B team away to UCAM. The cadets were first up against the home side in a very tight game where you never knew who was going to win, as it ebbed and flowed from one side to the other.

UCAM going in at half time 105 up, so Orihuela were playing catch up against a far bigger team.

After some excellent play by the backs with the forwards making the hard metres they managed to grind out a bonus point win coming out on top 2420. A well deserved win away to an excellent team.

Next up was the turn of ITV Orihuela RFC B team, this season is the first time they have had a B team, and is made up mainly of vets and new players to the game this year.

Orihuela surprised everyone and came out of the blocks at a rapid rate of knots notching up two converted tries by the backs in the first 10 minutes leaving the UCAM team completely shell shocked.

The resulting tries and for the rest of the game were the result of a solid defence together with the forwards giving a solid

platform for the backs to work from. Before half time Orihuela RFC had already got their try bonus point and were well on the way to a big score.

Unfortunately, for UCAM just before half time they were reduced to 13 men through a number of injuries and one serious one, looking at it, as the player went off in a neck brace. Half time score was 31-5 to Orihuela.

With the second half been a little one sided UCAM put up a brave fight and battled their hearts out and even managed to get a second consolation try, which they deserved for their efforts.

Orihuela RFC B eventually ran out 74-10 winners with Ivan getting 3 tries, Alexi 4, Anuar 2, Alvaro, Sergio and another Ivan

one a piece, and Alexi with 7 conversions.

The next game will be away for the first team against Lorca on 9 November, while the second team is on 16 November against San Javier at home.

Also new in the area of Guardamar is a beach fitness training, with Trainer John, starting at 18.00 on Monday’s behind the Guardamar Beach Hotel, all ages and fitness level, so ideal for getting your general fitness together.

Also I will be down at The Steakhouse in Rojales on Thursday, and at Moncayo Market on Saturday, so for all your rugby information come down and see me at these places and get some ideas for Xmas presents.

Training is at the Miguel Hernandez University ground at 20.15 on Tuesday and Thursday for the seniors and juveniles.

The juniors start at 18.15.

So if you are interested, dig out those rugby boots and come along and see for yourself what it is like. New players are always welcome no matter what age or skill level you are.

Last Sunday 5th placed Torry entertained Novelda who lay in 12th place. Novelda got off to a stuttering start to the season but were unbeaten in their last 5 games and keeping a clean sheet in their last 4 games.

Torry were unbeaten at home and had yet to concede a goal.

Novelda nearly capitalised on a poor clearance from Rafa and worked the ball to one of their forwards who unleashed a powerful shot which struck the foot of the post and was then hacked clear. Torry responded almost immediately when a ball in from Alberto found Dani Lucas whose shot on target was blocked and from the rebound the follow –up shot from Pastor was again blocked. On 15 minutes a well struck volley from the Novelda no. 6 produced a spectacular save from Carrion.

It was end to end stuff. Alberto

then tried his luck with a volley which just dipped over the top.

On 27 minutes a well flighted free-kick from Alberto found Dani Meseguer unmarked just beyond the far post and instead of heading on goal Dani headed across goal and the ball was cleared. On 40 minutes a cross from Pastor found Dani Lucas who turned his man and fired powerfully just the wrong side of the post into the sidenetting. On 42 minutes Rafa had to make a timely last ditch intervention, at the expense of a corner, to prevent a Novelda forward getting in and having a clear run on goal. Rafa then had a chance at the other end with a header from a Dani Lucas cross which he put over the top.

Novelda started the stronger in the second half and pegged Torry back but as the game wore on the Novelda threat dissipated and Torry started to press Novelda onto the backfoot. After 65 minutes a good cross from Dani Lucas was headed just over the top by Rafa Gomez from a good position.

A minute later a thunderous strike from Rafa Gomez from just outside the area produced a sprawling full length dive and save from the Novelda keeper.

From the resultant corner Alexis struck the ball on target from close range and the keeper made a magnificent reaction save to prevent a Torry goal.

Torry finished the stronger but couldn’t find a break-through and 5 minutes from the end Carrion had to get down low

to save a powerful daisy cutter from the edge of the box. The game finished goal-less which was probably a fair result on the day. Novelda extended their unbeaten record to 6 with no goals conceded in the last 5 games and Torry preserved their unbeaten home record to 6 with no goals conceded.

The game was played at high intensity and was fairly contested by both sides. The referee tried to let the game flow and wasn’t whistle and card happy which is usually the case here in Spain. Yellow cards were picked by Dani Lucas and Dani Meseguer and also Valdeolivas for protesting about a foul which wasn’t given Torry’s way from the bench.

This weekend Torry are away to Tercera new-comers Cullera who have got off to a decent start to the season and are very strong at home having won 4 and drawn 1 so far. It won’t be easy for Torry but they need at least a point to stay in or around the top 4 in the table.

Villamartin, 23rd October, 2013 The sun had hardly got out of bed before 36 golfers turned up at Villamartin to try their hardest to knock a small white ball into a small hole amidst the squawking of the parakeets that frequent this course.

It must be said that, at last, Villamartin is back to its best with the greens and fairways in very good condition; however, there are some tree branches that do need cutting back, especially on the 9th

74 players took part in our first Texas Scramble team game of the season on Thursday 24 October at our home course of La Marquesa.

The weather conditions are still wonderful for the time of year and just perfect for playing golf. Might I say that the Buckeridges only arrived back on Friday and needless to say they are back on winning form with Bob in the prizes already.

The first dinner dance of the season in our revamped clubhouse is on Saturday night with Diverse as entertainment which I am sure will be enjoyed by all who attend.

Good turn out today Thursday 24thOctober at Vistabella, for Fairwayz Golf Society day out. We played our usual standard format of individual Stableford. The weather was great, in fact fantastic for this time of year, and the course was it’s usual good standard. Good to see our Captain and handicap secretary back in action after both having suffered some health problems, i think it’s to do with us all getting older! Well done lads.

We postponed the presentation of the cup for the singles competition, due to the winner being away, hopefully in two weeks time he will be present to receive the trophy.

Some good scores were presented today, and i’m not just saying that because i won! Well ok i am.

The Silver Division welcomed back some regulars to the winners rostrum and one of those was Colin Marsden in 4th place on 32 points with Olga Haubner and Peter (The Don and do you like a horse’s head in your bed) Mason both on 33 points with Peter coming out on top via the countback but they were 2 points behind Alex Goslan who took the winners prize with 35 points.

It certainly didn’t look too promising early on with more than a fair portion of the sky looking decidedly angry……still, as is often the case, it soon dispersed and we were once again blessed with a lovely warm day. It’s hard to believe that it’s nearly Halloween!

However the sprinklers had given the course a good soaking over the hours of darkness and the rather damp conditions slowed things down considerably with little or no run causing most shots to stop pretty near to where they landed.

Having twelve four-balls teeing off every 8 or so minutes meant over an hour and a half to get us all underway. Wouldn’t it be novel if each group reported into the clubhouse some four hours later at 8 minute intervals? But, sadly, that never seems to happen due to a multitude of reasons, some of which are acceptable but many of which are often plain selfish and thoughtless.

We should all remember the golden rule – Keep up, you are behind the group in front NOT in

front of the group behind!

Still……we should be thankful we all made it in before dark! NTP’s went to Noel Bannon (Hole 3), Theo Boulhouwer (Hole 6), Keith Wickham (Hole 13) and Dominic Ralphs (Hole 16).

The three top visitors in ascending order were Harold Stevenson (31), Chris Aitchison (34) and Peter Devlin (36).

The bronze category saw Mick Roscoe in 4th (29), Norman McBride in 3rd (31), John Sorensen in 2nd (32) and top slot to Keith Wraithmell with 35.

Silver category’s top players were Norman Padmore in 4th (31), Joost Boulhouwer in 3rd (33), Alan Gilbert in 2nd (36) and Mike Jordan in 1st with the only score on the day under par (38).

Gold’s winners were Shay Cunningham in 4th (31), Phil de Lacy in 3rd (33), Noel Bannon in 2nd (34) and John Osborne maintaining his excellent form in 1st spot with 35.

What a wonderful day we had after what we thought was going to be a dismal day the sun shone and we sweltered, Vista Bella was in excellent condition with the greens running true, thats if you managed to get on them without going into too many bunkers, 31 members and a guest played and from the results coming in they all played quite well, even those who thought they were Barnes Wallace when they hit the water and virtually bounced all the way across, the 4 ball that I was playing in all had a good laugh when I took a shot with my 5 iron only for the head of my club followed the ball .
